When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.

Nothing is further from my intention when sitting in front of this blank page. I am satisfied, and it's already a lot! with sharing my vision of a polyhedral issue, in which I have had a privileged position, as an observer and even as a par ticipant, since I contacted him. I promise you that, if you will discover some surprises in these texts, and I guarantee you, that your approach to the subject will be completely different when you finish reading everything I intend to share with you. he Arts of Mars, what a god…! Short-tempered, brutal, ruthless, impetuous and whimsical... What could it be expected from something like that? Ever since man is man, he's had to deal with his darkest demons and confront the idea of survival by every means at his disposal. When faced with other species, he did so as a hunter, or as an eventual prey; when faced with his fellow men, he found out that the proper use of his physical and mental powers, and the handling of different tools in the form of weapons, gave him an advantage over his adversaries and enemies. That's the way Martial Arts were born, that is, as a necessity of survival in a hostile environment, because Mother Nature may be a mother, but she is merciless. W h e n s o c i e t y evolved and trades appeared, the management of violence was entrusted to the most gifted for the issue, splitting into two categories, the militia and the police, in a business which, anyway, was originally the same, that is, "kicking arses", even indiscriminately if it came to that. In modern societies, the exclusive on the manipulation and management of violence, resides in the state, however, we humans didn't emerged in such an environment. Most of the evolutionary time in which the biological software of homo Sapiens and its predecessors was concretized, that is, the period that made us as we are, we spent it living in small hunter-gatherer groups, so it’s from them that we have inherited the conditioning factors, that automatically control our vital systems, especially the unconscious ones.

h about Martial Arts th Warrior Arts deal with fundamental forces in survival, aggressiveness, life and death, power, control, etc. Of course, in modern societies, where everything is regulated, the use of these vital components in individuals is under hundreds of thousands of commands, inserted through education and repetitive learning; and yet, there is no shortage of people who, escaping this control, maintain indomitable guidelines for action; individuals who, refractory to any attempt at domination, either by authority or by the guidelines agreed by the group (or imposed by law), act unscrupulously by taking what they desire, regardless of the consequences. Beyond pathological or extreme cases, all of us will have to face the essential dissociation between the caveman that we biologically really are (there is no discussion about this ...) and modern man. These contradictions are the origin of many of the vital and health problems today we have to put up with, and which manifest themselves through mental or physical drawbacks, far beyond even what science itself today admits. Our caveman's primary impulses collide head-on with the programs with which they have rewritten our minds and the way we must behave. Aggression is an example of these contradictions, and Martial Arts, when you begin practicing them, usually bring to the surface this painful discordance, so that, if the teacher is wise, he can solve it positively. Otherwise, and in any case, the subject of restrained and unexpressed aggressiveness will make an appearance on those who wear a kimono or climb into a ring, sooner rather than later. My late Karate and Taekwondo teacher, JosĂŠ Luis Paniagua, was one of the few I know who investigated the intricacies and consequences of this crash, both at the mental and physical level. His interesting and innovative conclusions about aggressiveness were reflected in several books, which my brother and I published years ago. The negative aspects of this contradiction in terms between biology and mind, turned out to be much more serious than anyone had ever discovered, so he dedicated much of his work to finding methods within the Martial Arts and its practice, to positively channel all that enormous potential inscribed in our DNA. In a much rougher and more elemental way, the classical martial systems, far from dealing with these matters, were developed simply to be effective in the war.

The never written trut Paradoxically, it was in the Peace that Martial Arts became sophisticated and prompted their practitioners to look within themselves, thus giving them the possibility of finding the best that these disciplines can offer modern man. All the great Masters in this field who have lived in this world, have suffered an epiphany relative to this point. An epiphany that manifests itself around the transgression of confronting the Martial thing as a simple outwardly practice and place the warrior on another plane, a reflective one this time, where the true enemy to beat is oneself. Miyamoto Musashi himself came to discover how effectiveness and self-control go hand in hand with values such as detachment, fluidity, the ability to live the present moment, so that, going beyond one’s own demons, they can be, in combat and in life, the best version of oneself. The martial world and its environment is no different from others, in the sense that it attracts people who pulse in tune with what the vibrational essence of that activity implies. There is always a need and a similarity with that and those we approach and with ourselves. This means that the martial world is generally populated by difficult personalities, let's admit it, where testosterone, aggressiveness and violence are present in one way or another, and where fear and dominance of others or the environment are a concern above the average of the rest of humans. Like attracts like within the same plane. In my generation there are two groups, which differ basically in the definition of the reasons why one started in these activities. Jokingly, I differentiate between those who joined a Martial Arts center because they had seen a film by Bruce Lee, and those who signed up captivated by the series Kung Fu. The most quarrelsome ones fell in love with the great Bruce, who in his films played with very elementary instincts, while he lashed out busting a few heads, and showing quasi-inhuman physical abilities to imitate. Those who fell in love with the Kung Fu series and, consequently, began their search on that path, were usually more on the mystical and philosophical side, where self-control and personal discipline would lead them towards inner peace and, why deny it? towards a fantasy of omnipotence. Interestingly enough, Bruce Lee’s genius was behind both projects, and those who read it years after watching the films, when scrips were accessible to the general public (I myself edited them in Spanish), discovered that other deep side of the Little Dragon.

h about Martial Arts The first group fits with more adolescent and primary values and characteristics, and today it has new heroes, who instead of battling in the movies, do it in the octagons. Narcissism and bigorexia (Muscle dysmorphia) usually manifest in a group that likes striking tattoos, giving a glimpse (no tattoo proceeds without pain) of hidden sadomasochistic inclinations. There is no demerit in it. Let everyone do as he or she pleases! But we must keep in mind that all this emphasizes the outside, always removing the force from the inside. This is necessarily so, because when a pole opposite to another is accentuated, the antagonistic pole decreases (Fire - water). On their right (that isâ&#x20AC;Ś even more Yang) they are flanked by the self-defense lovers and by the military and police forces that deal with authentic violence without rules; and on their left (somewhat more Yin), by martial sports practitioners, in which competition, in other words, the confrontation with others, even though it's regulated and sometimes even symbolic, continues to put the accent outside of us. The second group developed a more romantic search, that often ended up in a whole cultural immersion, sometimes even religious, that frequently led them to change their place of residence and move to the countries of origin of their Eastern styles, learn their languages and, especially in the case of male practitioners, even marry indigenous ladies. The most traditional systems, even though they are apart from the sports and competition scheme, remain in limbo as far as this matter is concerned; some continue to stress the outside while others put the accent in the inside, nevertheless being all of them depositories of values that transcend the issue of defeating the opponent as the main goal, in an approach that includes philosophical or formal and cultural traces, and practices with an added value that must fit with the interests and dreams of their practitioners. Most of them emphasize a seemingly anachronistic knowledge, but they know well how to generate loyalty among their practitioners, who may have nevertheless characteristics that could make them essentially fit in any of the two groups that we previously presented (that of Bruce Lee and that of Kung Fu series). In the left wing of this martial world and at its end, we find practitioners of the so-called soft arts (some say "internal arts"), who statistically approach Martial Arts mainly for health reasons, or for a marked search for "Peace", but without confrontation, in which conflicts with one's aggressiveness are also present; they simply tend to be refused, to become entrenched, to mystify or to postpone.

Cover Story Be that as it may, Martial Arts, upon confronting our conception and putting ourselves within the reach of our own aggressiveness or that of others, directly question this point of human nature, its basic instincts, the use of power in its most elemental and basic form, the confrontation, preeminence over others, the management of violence, and ultimately, the idea of life and death of oneself and others. A community like this made up of individuals in natural harmony, and attracted by these issues, it is a human group which, logically, it will be by no means easy dealing with. I can vouch for that in the years I've been doing this work. On the other hand, the warrior has always liked to wear "feathers" in his battles or in peace, and vanity, let’s face it, is not an alien vice to this collective. For this reason, sometimes the need for self-recognition, logical and natural as it is in any social context, here acquires pathological features. You'd be surprised at the situations and details that have paraded before me regarding this matter. As I understand them in their general context, I never judge them and I always respect them; after all, I am at their service. In this quick description of the Martial panorama, it must be noted a contemporary trend with a marked North American profile, which has been thriving in this sector in recent decades, stressing out marketing and financial success, above any other consideration. I am the first to give a fair value to money, but people attached to this segment of the martial world, frequently bring this point to paroxysm "putting the plow before

But in the web of martial artists' deadly sins, the most significant, the king of them all is, undoubtedly, envy. Envy is not only wanting what other has, but wanting the other not to have. Pettiness and infighting within the schools and among themselves are part of the history of the martial world since ancient times. Such struggles frequently pose situations of treason to the Masters themselves and also, it must be said, scenarios where those same Masters have abused their power both physically and psychologically, in a frantic and continuous way It's by no means an exclusive scenario of our sector, for it belongs to the primordial schemes of human misery, where positions of power and the abuse thereof are converted and accepted in a customary way. I remember that in the army, the rookies of each replacement, we were subjected to humiliations by those who just a few months earlier had gone through that same experience complaining about it. No one seemed to want to break that vicious circle that tended to

Cover Story last forever in its own delirium of smallness and helplessness. I’ve seen teachers on the mat flaunt their male monkey song, needlessly beating their students with impunity, simply because their own instructors had done unto them likewise. The old "Spare the road spoil the child", and the "No pain, no gain", hides once again unjustifiable and often undeniable sado-masochistic tendencies. The average martial artist never secondguesses himself too much; he is more a man of action than of reflection; but maturity reaches us all and it's not uncommon that the sum of setbacks and, much too often, the gathering of injuries, can make, over the years, a dent in their character. Few have the manliness and courage to question themselves and question what they've learned, and instead of continuing to repeat the same mistakes they made, they seek and find ways to remedy them. These few are the greatest, because they are the only ones who manage to transgress the limits of the marbled building of practices, which, when poorly carried out, lead over the years to serious physiological deficiencies and no less tares and scars on the soul. As the ancient aphorism has it, "Whoever lives by the sword dies by the sword." I'm aware that many will not like what I have written… Looking ourselves in the mirror is not everybody's cup of tea, although, as we have seen, narcissism is a constant not uncommon in this sector. The mirror, so common in many gyms, is impartial in reflecting us, no one likes to be shown their flaws. Despite its many deficiencies, flaws and imperfections, Martial Arts continue to exist and they will keep to do so. Regardless of their usefulness or not, whether as a profession or simple activity, they will continue to attract groups of people who seek to find in its practice answers to their questions, needs and natures and, especially, to their dreams.

It is irreplaceable when it comes to teaching respect for hierarchy and authority, especially in a socio-cultural context that is hardly inclined to give due attention to these figures. It helps disinhibit shy people, provides security to the mellifluous, straightens the quarrelsome and calms the nervous ones. The horizon of Martial Arts will be ever wider in the future, an activity that, without renouncing its violent nature, will process as an educational and formative resource for the character of young people and the health of the elderly. Their good name will be questioned every time the lines of reason will be crossed, or when they promote aggressive behavior, rather than the serenity, health and inner peace of their practitioners. We can’t ignore the caveman inside us; if we do and we don’t release the enormous pressure to which modern life subjugates us in the day to day, an unexpected morning he can rise, jumps out and commit any atrocity... We’re sick of watching it on the news! On the other hand, Martial Arts, by teaching us to exist normally in a different context than usual, under different rules, and quite often even within the different cultural context of a distant country, allow us to take distance from our personality as something univocal, thereby relativizing our identity, which generates tolerance and understanding enriching our personality.

Of course, this is not always the case; there are many thugs who only practice Martial Arts to reaffirm their weakest aspects, their pathologies, and to further inflate their oversized egos. For, at the end, things arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t good or bad by themselves, but by the way we live in them. The fact that Martial Arts can be an excellent self-improvement tool doesn't mean that they are always used in this sense. You just have to observe how they process people's bodies, to understand where there is an accumulation and its meaning. I will not go into it in details now, it's a very extensive topic in itself, but I will point out some unmistakable signs that my teacher, J. L. Paniagua, highlighted in his research.

Cover Story The continuous postural and structural accentuation of hyperlordosis, for example, implies an accumulation and tension, a blockage in the dorsal part of the Hara, which connotes an inefficient and wrong use of body energy. This involves, among other things, a tendency of the ego to modulate its aggressiveness by dominating others. On the other hand, kyphosis (both functional and structural) implies the tendency to defend an emotional content, incapable of expressing itself through screaming, which defends itself as a turtle castled in its shell, a type of personality that when exploded is ungovernable. Martial arts can be, when we question ourselves with and through them, a tool for the development of our consciousness and personality, provided that in their practice we seek balance, serenity and fluidity, values that will continue there in old age as a safe investment. The problem with putting the accent on the outside is that we stop putting it on the inside, and, as we know over the years, all energy is limited. Living a “teenage” and quarrelsome phase at its right moment, can be as appropriate and necessary as leaving it behind when its moment has expired. Not everyone needs to go through it the same way, but everyone needs to understand that evolutionary stage.

With regard to aggressiveness, we cannot simply look the other way, because its nature is such that it never abandons us, being an essential part of human nature. Aggressiveness is the engine that gives your life movement in positive and what destroys you in negative, by excess or by defect, whether from the inside out or from the outside in. Mars is a violent god, the lord of war and the war in itself, it's the territory of life or death for people and states, and, as Sun Tsu said, it must therefore be carefully studied. Ignoring the matter or letting it loose is a mistake; working with it improperly, dangerous. The Martial world has always remained in markedly hierarchical environments, in which the term "Autoritas" possesses a rarely understood value. The layman fails to understand the raison d'être of these organigrams, or the deep contents and meanings of, for example, the relationship kohai-senpai, master-pupil, etc. Nowadays these traditional links are “rara avis”, because there are no longer students, but clients, and this clouds the basic possibilities to achieve an in-depth knowledge of what is more than a set of techniques. So it is. We have technicalized everything with our pragmatic and rational mindset, stripping Martial Arts of their magical aspects, to reduce them to lists or do-it-yourself manuals... but that also comes at a price!

Cover Story True martial arts are a means, not an end. The object of their practice must be ourselves, not the excellence in their application. True excellence comes from us, becoming the best versions of ourselves, not beating anyone, jumping higher, or "killing better." We should learn to deal with violence so that it doesn't harm us, and not to be destroyed by it when applying it to others. Any path that doesn't contemplate these essential points will be just a mere compilation of techniques, martial techniques, of course, but in no way an Art. The word Art is the generally ignored and misunderstood turning point in this equation. It's not about performing beautiful katas, nor of course doing a "precious" jab. Art includes and tells us about the intangible, the ineffable, the subtle and the harmonic that, in one way or another, every sincere student seeks when entering a dojo. The perversion of that urge comes later.

We often forget the dreams that pushed us to follow a path. We believe that we have passed that phase and that technical knowledge can replace and satisfy our deep hunger for truth, harmony and balance, for peace, self-control and serenity, that prompted us, consciously or unconsciously, to take that first step on this journey of a thousand Steps. The novice's naivety is no excuse, deep down he was right, and we must remember the purity of his endeavor, since purity resides in dreams and these never deceive us. Do not forget, it is in the "Art" where the eternal force really resides, the invisible motor, which makes this activity something more than just a game of arrogant and self-conscious villains, the true added value that distinguishes these practices from any other sports activity and that provides to something brutal, bloodthirsty and primitive, the noble seal of spiritual.

In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. An Art that seeks effectiveness to arrest a person, always looking to nullify from the start the opponent’s ability to attack, through a complete arsenal of techniques with empty hands and weapons, and a whole structure of arrests with ropes and sticks to facilitate the actions of the other companions. In this first DVD we will study the technique of empty hand vs. empty hand in different positions, against Katana, Wakizashi and Tanto, the use of weapons (Hishigi, Jutte, KusariFundó) or any type of stick, displacements, blows, and Hojo-Jutsu and Shibaru techniques

Shaolin The Five Elements in the practice of Shaolin Kung Fu The theory of the Five Elements, or five phases, is a concept deeply rooted in traditional Chinese Medicine, the origin of which is closely related to Taoism. The five elements ar e: Wood, Fir e, Earth, Metal, and Water. According to this concept, the five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal a n d Wa t e r, a r e f i v e b a s i c substances that constitute the material world. Each one of these five elements governs one of the five viscera and communicates with a particular set of openings, which are manifested in the 9 openings of the human body that are the mouth, the ears, the nostrils, the eye sockets, the urethra and the anus.

ire is associated with the heart and controls courage. A strong heart fills a person with confidence and vitality, while a weak heart is easily carried away by fear. Wood is associated with the liver and controls anger. If the liver is strong, the person is not easily carried away by anger and can control its power fully, whilst if the liver is weak, the person is more prone to get angry, which can drain the body and lead to cycles of depression. Wood has the ability to fuel fire. In the same way, activating liver functions in the Kung Fu practitioner can be similar to feeding with wood the "fire" that burns in his psyche. Earth is associated with the spleen and controls energy. To activate the spleen functions in the Kung Fu practitioner is to awaken all his

potential strength to its maximum degree. A strong spleen fills the body with strength and energy, while a weak spleen leads to deficiency and fatigue. Metal is associated with the lungs and controls sound (compressing the lungs make sounds like thunders); activating its functions can bring an explosion of force in the practitioner. When the lungs are strong, breathing, which is our most direct source of life, is also strong. Weak lungs spread their weakness throughout the practitioner's body. Water is associated with the kidneys and controls the Jing or vital force. Activating its functions will increase the practitioner's agility. When the kidneys are strong, the body movements are light and fast. When the kidneys are weak, the movements become empty, heavy, and difficult to execute.

On the other hand, each internal organ in turn is linked to an external organ: the heart is linked to the tongue, the liver to the eyes, the spleen to the mouth (including the upper lip), the lungs to the nose and the kidneys to the ears. The spleen has its "special body opening" in the mouth and manifests itself on the lips, the heart has also its specific opening in the mouth. Kidneys have two double openings: one above, in the ears, and one below, in the urethra and anus. The "real Qi" is generated in all five organs and can be emitted from the human body through these openings. When the process of circulation of the Five Elements in the practitioner is uniform, the "real Qi" is generated in him and, once present in his body, the "real Qi" gradually travels through the cauldrons of Qi (the three Dan Dian), and the practitioner's strength is miraculously multiplied.

Application in Kung Fu The Kung Fu practitioner can temporarily consume the circulation of the Five Elements by widening his eyes, raising his eyebrows, straightening his shoulders and keeping his elbows close to his ribs, while contracting and sinking his chest and stomach, leaving his chin on his chest and, at the same time, retracting the anus as far as possible into the pelvic cavity, and keeping his feet stuck to the ground. By doing these actions he can direct his "real Qi", generated by his organs, downward into his "Qi cauldron" (lower Dan Dian). In performing these actions, the practitioner must hold his head the way monkeys do. His hands must assume the shape of a curved Chinese tiling. His upper arms should hug closely his chest and when moving, he should do it like a rooster on the prowl. He must pay close attention to protecting his throat and genitals. He will also need to take great care to protect himself against attacks targeting the chest or both sides of the body. Once the "Real Qi" has been grouped together, and after the five organs are secured, the practitioner is now in a position to demonstrate his own strength. The central points of his hands are always in communion with his heart; and that assures the presence of "Fire". The central points on the soles of the feet are always in communion with the kidneys, so "Water" energy is also there. When hands and feet move in a coordinated way, the practitioner is said to have reached the summit, where Water and Fire can work together.

Shaolin Reaching the pinnacle of collaboration and mastery of the 4-extension method, the practitioner can easily defeat his opponent with only half the effort he had to do previously. On the other hand, with a proper use of the energy, the body can regulate and store Qi in a suitable way. When there is excess Qi and the meridians are in good condition, the body has enough energy to carry out a natural regeneration process thus being able to repair the organs. When organ health improves, the body is able to generate more Qi. This improves the function of the meridians, which help strengthen the organs; healthy organs, in turn, generate more Qi, and so on. In this way, health improves inner energy, which in turn improves health and both feed back on each other. During training, many forms (taolu) of Kung Fu activate the meridians that are in contact with the internal organs. Forms (taolu) also act on the spinal column and central nervous system, and having a direct effect on internal organs, they improve their functions. In our day to day we must try to keep a calm and stable mind, and avoid excessive effort as well as harmful situations, since stress and negative emotions have a direct impact on our organs.

Pressure Points: Myth, Hype and Reality By: Master Mark S. Gridley

There have been numerous articles, books, and videos that have attempted to sway the reader on what is one of the most intensely debated topics in martial arts and self-defense instruction. My intention here is not to add to the controversy, but simply to provide the reader with information to draw their own conclusions. From the outset I will disclose that I am cognitively biased on this subject. This is because of my own experience spanning over three decades. However, even as a critical and at times cynical t h i n k e r, t h e s i m p l e t r u t h o f â&#x20AC;&#x153;feeling is believingâ&#x20AC;? may be the best evidence, though certainly not absolutely conclusive. I have cover ed several of the m o s t common inaccuracies and misconceptions surrounding pressure points in some of my previous writings, so, this time I will address this topic in a broader context, focusing not on technical specifics, but instead on a general philosophical perspective. So, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s begin by reviewing the words: myth, hype and reality and how they represent the three different attitudes of Martial Arts student and Instructors toward the study of Pressure Points.

Tactical Pressure Points

Tactical Pressure Points YTH is often defined as a traditional story from ancient times and cultures, involving events, creatures and magical tales, developed mostly to provide an explanation for natural phenomena, and often resorting to some supernatural deity or fantastic happening. As opposed to a Legend, which is almost always based on fact and actual historical characters (although greatly embellished and exaggerated over time), a Myth is not based on fact, it is a symbolic, allegorical narrative attempting to explain the “unknown”. Because the use, application and effects of Pressure Points have always been difficult to understand, steeped in mystical, esoteric language, and based on controversial, complex “oriental medicine”, many martial artists have dismissed the whole subject as a “myth”. Although in their training they employ attacks to “weak points” on the human body, they believe that they are simply sensitive and vulnerable anatomical areas, devoid of any other subtle, deeper energetic qualities. As “rational, modern, logical” individuals, they refuse to accept or even investigate any other possibility and declare that pressure points (and Chi / Ki / Prana energy) do not exist, and that they are just fake, unscientific mumbojumbo based on ancient “oriental myths”. This is an extreme position that, fortunately, is not shared by a large segment of the martial arts community. HYPE is one of those interesting words in the English language that has multiple meanings depending on the context. In old fashion slang, “hype” (used as a noun) referred to a person who swindles someone; but in modern slang, as listed in the Merriam-Webster dictionary (also as a noun), it means a narcotic addict. However, even when more commonly used as a verb, the word hype has two different meanings: the first one, somewhat benign, is “to stimulate, enliven, excite, agitate, increase”. The second one, clearly negative, means basically to deceive with “exaggerated, contrived, extravagant claims of the importance, value, properties or benefits of something”. And this is the meaning relevant to our present discussion. Unfortunately, over the years, the study of Pressure Points has been accompanied by a lot of counterproductive, ridiculous hype, misinformation and fake experts, that have diminished (and, for some people, completely destroyed) the credibility and legitimacy of this very important martial arts component. Paradoxically, it has been this “hype”, supported by exaggerated, patently false claims, that has led many people to believe that pressure points are nothing but a “myth”, and discourage them from further serious inquiry. Sadly, the opposite is also true, with many naive, uninformed and misguided people actually “buying into the hype” and the fantastic claims of deceiving charlatans. I can attest to this personally as I am often contacted by email or approached at seminars by individuals wanting to learn “the secrets of the Death Touch”; or how to “knock-out” someone with a simple touch (the Mr. Spock’s technique from Star Trek); or how to perform strikes to special points with a “time-delayed” effect. Although much more popular 25 or 30 years ago, you can still find advertisements shamelessly offering training on “how to disable an armed attacker with one touch”, or how to learn “never before revealed deadly pressure points techniques” or “forbidden, secret death-touch of the Shaolin Monks” (or of Ninja assassins!). Of course, all it takes to make those ridiculous fantasies come true is a credit card and a gullible disposition. I never cease to be amazed by the continued commercial success of those frauds and it saddens me that many potentially good students are deceived and become bitter and disillusioned when they realize that what they paid for is nothing more than parlor tricks, stupid nonsense and fancifully packaged garbage.

AND NOW THE REALITY. I want to clearly assert, at this point, that there are many credible experts and Instructors who have dedicated their lives and careers to serious research and study of Pressure Points. I have been fortunate and honored to have learned directly from several of the best and I am proud of the fact that I am able to extend their legacy. By following in their footsteps, I have continued advancing the art and science of Pressure Points, teaching new generations of students all over the world. Understanding, technical proficiency and successful application of pressure points (known also as Kyusho, Dim-mak, Avi Marma, etcetera) is difficult but achievable. It takes time, effort, purposeful study, serious practice, and the personal guidance by a well-established, legitimately credentialed instructor. In short, no hype, no absurd fantasies or “quick fixes” bought on the Internet with a credit card. So then, what should the objective Martial Artist do who is honestly interested in integrating Pressure Points into their training and teaching? My advice would be to focus on applying the scientific method to help define a commonly accepted reality based on known facts. The best way is to follow the tried and

proven application of the scientific method as it began to be taught in the 17th century. According to the Oxford dictionary it is a method or procedure that consists of several steps including: systematic observation measurement, experimentation, and formulation, testing and modification of hypothesis. Criticism and skeptical inquiry are also necessary elements of the scientific method (in fact, you may have noted that I cite or quote more than one source in almost all of my writings because I am an advocate of critical thinking, and I often strive to utilize multiple sources to help reinforce my learning). As an example of the confusion, and sometime controversy, surrounding Pressure Points training, I will share with you a fairly common assumption (and an actual statement I once heard from an instructor) that declares that pressure points cannot be understood by Western minds because it requires Eastern thinking. While conceptually there may be some truth in that because of the difficulty associated with the interpretation of ancient texts or traditions, facts and scientific knowledge are not biased by culture. And although it took a long time, today most medical insurance companies, recognizing the health benefits, cover the costs of acupuncture or acupressure based on the abundance of scientific research, clinical trials and validated results from accredited universities. This process uses empirical data validated through rigid application of logical questioning and critical feedback. One study, conducted in 1999, can be found in the December issue of The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness titled “Physiological study of pressure point techniques used in the martial arts.” This study moved beyond the effectiveness of simple pain compliance and medically monitored the physiological changes occurring as a result of the application of pressure point “knock out” techniques (even then, as a policy, much of what we subscribe to science can and should also be questioned). With that said, it is my firm belief, based on almost 30 years of experience in the research, study and practice of pressure points techniques as applied to the Martial Arts, that they exist, are real, are effective and they are not a myth. FEAR is there to Warn Us, not to Jail Us! My journey in Martial arts started way back in 1974 and back in those days the training was designed to weed out the weak. Nowadays almost every school focuses on helping students on strengthening their character and personal development. Martial arts is so much more than just something physical. unfortunately, many schools overlook this. Sometimes, in the hurry to get rich quick, they left their old Instructors to set up their own schools, with little or no martial arts or personal development experience. 2. QT’s – Quick Tips We had so much fun developing this concept as my Sifu (Master Cameron) has three daughters (all teenagers) who are all crazy about TikTok. The concept is to say something informative about martial arts or about you, in under 30 seconds. Then through, social media and text send out 3 to 5 messages every day to keep the students engaged. These are really fun to do and the feed back is that students love it. Remember for the parents right now they are looking to see if what we are offering them brings more value to our programme. If you only teach adults also great as you can send them Quick Tip about your martial arts as well…

Here is an example... We use the same format for each of our QT’s so only need to change the QT… “Hi, QT’s, Quick Tips, A Black Belt is a White Belt That never Quit and you are not a Quitter.

Rule 1 – Keep It Simple · Create a script and follow it · Shoot 10 to 20 QT’s all in one session.

Rule 2 – Get Started and Learn on the way · Plan all your QT’s beforehand · If something is worth doing then it is worth doing badly as my instructor tells me… I now know what he was talking about. The concept is very simple the more you shoot and get in front of the camera the quicker you learn to adapt and learn faster - what works and what doesn’t. Test, Fail Learn. · Set a target of 10 QT’s rather than focus on time. · Review your QT’s, if you’re not happy shoot it again and again until you are.

Rules 3 – Have Fun! · To save time delete all cuts you didn’t like immediately so you only have the ones you want to use on your mobile. · Create a file and have a laugh watching back all your bloopers and any really funny ones save, maybe use these for another time. · Learn to laugh at yourself and the mistakes but also see that you have improved every time you are in front of the camera. Today a white belt in front of the camera and tomorrow a black belt.

4. Wing Chun Challenge – Beat the Sifu Very simple concept create a weekly challenge and ask your students to beat you at it. Rule 1 – Keep it Simple · Really keep it simple for example the number of punches in a minute, or complete 10,000 punches in a week… Be creative and come up with a weekly challenge.

Rule 2 – Get Started and learn as you go · Set to release the challenge at the same time each week

· Set a date to shoot all your prerecord videos at the same time · Parents love this as they see their child training around the home, therefore adds extra value to your programme.

Rule 3 – Have Fun · Make some of the challenges involving parents, be creative and don’t be afraid to ask your students and parents for ideas and feedback.

5. – Private Lessons WOW! What a great way to teach martial arts… Stop thinking you need to charge less for an online lessons.. In fact we should be charging more, just learn how to give more value and keep the student engaged within their lesson. Right now people are stuck at home, not spending

WCI money and have the time to learn a new skill as in martial arts…

3. Have Fun… · It seems I am all about the fun? A Hwarangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Path â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Overcoming the Fear of Death (Part 1) By: Grandmaster Taejoon Lee

Due to the recent events, as the world regresses into a state of panic and pandemonium caused by the pandemic outbreak of the Corona Virus Covid-19, I was compelled to deliver a message of the true meaning and value of what it means to live life as a martial artist, a warrior, a Hwarang, as I feel it is most relevant in these uncertain contemporary times! I am not going to discuss here the Covid-19 virus, as I am not an expert in the field of medicine, but I urge you to seek out credible sources on your own and get the facts rather than reacting to misinformation. However, what I will address is how we, as martial artists, warriors, as a Hwarang should deal with the fear of death as that is the main root of all fears.

Hwa Rang Do here is a saying in our Korean culture, â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you live long enough, you will endure all sufferings (or in this case all absurdities).â&#x20AC;? I have never thought in my wildest imagination that I would live to witness that one-day people would be hoarding and fighting over toilet paper, leaving the market counters desolate of any trace. How could one possibly imagine such insanity, such crazy hysterics where men, women, and even the elderly are battling it out over toilet paper, as though they are fighting for their lives? What madness can drive people to such desperate, insane behavior?

As I sit back and watch these events unfold, I could not help but to be disappointed with the human race as we are losing our sense of humanity, regressing into social behavior far worse than of any lesser animal species. Why toilet paper? We could try to reason by considering that one might be afraid the chain of production of toilet paper will cease because the majority of it is manufactured in China. Yes, but that could be true for many other items, so why toilet paper? From what I have gathered, I first mention of it was online, which started in Japan of such a rumor and the people were reacting to it by hoarding.

Hwa Rang Do This is evidence to the fact that there is really no way to rationalize irrational behavior, as it is never based on truth or facts, but out of fear. Fear is all consuming and it feeds the imagination to create the worst scenarios rooted in personal phobias, which is constantly supported by the nonstop streaming of games, movies, entertainment filled with violence, horror, gore and the apocalypse. The more one lacks proper knowledge and awareness of the Truth, the greater chance he/she will succumb to fear, although it is just an unreal imaginary fantasy, will justify it to be real no matter of the facts or the truth. Many people who were hoarding the toilet paper in the markets were asked why and not even the minority, but no one had a clue. Some of them didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say anything as they rushed off to see what else they could hoard before itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all gone and some others said because everybody else was doing it. Another important fact to realize from this is that we are all connected, connected through the Internet and the power of social media. Not more than a couple of days later, the same insanity was happening here in Luxembourg, Europe, UK, Australia, and in the US. Interestingly, I have heard that in South Korea, one of the three countries with the most infections of Covid-19, they have not yet started to hoard. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some good news and I hope it will remain so, but we will see in due time. No one is isolated, no one is truly detached, and no one can escape or hide from the affects of mass hysteria, the collective consciousness, and the technology that binds us all. No one person is an island or a single bubble, unaffected by what happens in the world. We are all connected socially, economically, technologically, and what affects one person will affect us all, which Covid-19 perfectly proves, as we all live within one bubble, Earth.

Hwa Rang Do I am ashamed and appalled of our behavior as human beings, but the fact remains that I am part of the human race and I cannot just mock and criticize others. I needed better understanding for myself so that somehow I can be part of the solution and not the problem. Thus, as I was addressing an email to all the members of the World Hwa Rang Do Association on the facts of the corona virus and what measures they should take, it gave me an opportunity to share with you, the members of the martial arts community our true value within our society, especially in these uncertain, chaotic times. It is sad but so true that only in times of crisis, weakness, tragedy, imminent threat of harm, suffering, and death that the true underlying self is revealed. In all the rest of our days we can pretend, fake, lie, deceive, manipulate, and delude ourselves to seem normal, happy, and self-righteous to others. However, deep down inside, buried at the core of our subconscious lies the demon of fear, doubt, waiting to lurk its ugly head when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s survival is threatened. We as a society, as humanity is showing its true colors and this is most disturbing.

Hwa Rang Do The way of the sword is the foundation of martial arts. With the coming of the Bronze Age came the sword and with it came the beginnings of civilization and the advancements in technology to modernity. For millenniums, it was the warrior class, which was the highest social caste who led our society in all areas of civility and governess. The tradesman, entertainers, shopkeepers, they were all of lower social status as they sold their services and themselves for money. The warrior class was the keepers of honor, nobility, and loyalty, ready to sacrifice their lives for God, King and Country, for a cause, a belief. Even as warriors, the ones without an allegiance to a King who killed only for money were not considered worthy of honor or nobility as they killed for profit rather than sacrificing for a cause. With the advancements of technology and the introduction of gunpowder, it paved the way for mass destruction without the use of hand-to-hand combat. Warfare was no longer personal and did not require face-to-face confrontation, becoming impersonal, without emotion, and compassion. As technology surged ahead into the Industrial Age and Postmodernism, Kings and knights were abolished with the rise of states and giant companies. Science attempted to prove that God was dead as man became more confident to control its own destiny by improving living conditions, extending longevity of life, creating abundance of leisure, and increasing of pleasures. With the destructive force of the World Wars and the ending of the Cold War, the belief of any political ideologies were subdued, paving the way for Globalization. In the process we have lost our independence, becoming completely dependent on government and technology, trading horses for cars, farms for markets, books for computers, living off the land for consumerism, and our privacy and freedom for comfort and security. It is in my opinion that the current state of insanity, the mass hysteria is a product of our fears derived from dependency and the sense of helplessness, which comes from it. We cannot do anything without technology and government and everyday, every moment we are reminded of this fact through the mass media via Internet and smartphones. At one point in our human history, a single person possessed all the knowledge necessary to live and raise a family on his/her own. They knew how to start with nothing and by using whatever was available they provided for themselves the necessities of life. Of course this was a hard way of living, yet they knew exactly what they had control over and what was beyond their means as the reality of death was always near.

Today, we are deluded by the advancements in the sciences, which have supposedly enhanced our way of living, surrendering any responsibility, logic or reason to the experts in their fields and leaders of government. We have become over confident, over indulgent, hedonistic, spoiled, Godless people with only greater arrogance leading to delusions of immortality and invincibility. We are somehow comforted to think that we can avoid what is the inevitable, that somehow we have control over our destiny, nature, and our lives. The truth is that there is no way we can have full control over anything; we can have some resemblance of control, but in the end the wisdom is to accept that we are powerless as it is reflected in the poetic definition of wisdom – “Wisdom is when you realize you know nothing.” Therefore, when we as individuals, as a society begin to panic it is when we are unexpectedly confronted with the reality that we are truly powerless. Essentially, the practice of martial arts is dealing with our primal fears and learning to overcome them that give it value. It is not in winning trophies in competition, not on being the best, not learning to defend or beat another person senselessly; it’s not in selfaggrandizement and creating delusions of grandeur, which it has been reduced to in moder n times. Furthermore, there are many other activities, which can accomplish the same result of self-confidence and enhanced self-esteem. The most important facet of martial training is in overcoming the self, primarily of fear and ego – the fear of death. For this reason we must understand the “Way of the Sword.”

Most of us have met people we think about: "He lives in the past," or "He thinks only of the future," "He lives only for t o d a y. " O u r j u d g m e n t s a r e predetermined in ways that other people represent time. From the ways to represent time (past, present and future), our abilities and their limitations depend. Therefore, certain problems can not be solved unless the way of representing time is changed. Some people say: "Leaving the past behind" - and that's literally what they do. If you leave the past behind you, you can not see it anymore - it's gone. Others talk about a foggy future, and the future on their time line is really vague. There are even people in general without a future.

ime is the most important condition in the organization of our experience. Think about what it would be like to perceive the world outside of time. Out of time, there is no causal relationship, there is no way to know what and when to do to meet the needs. With rare exception, each of us has an individual way of perceiving and experiencing time intervals. Determine how personally you perceive different time intervals is fairly easy. It is necessary to start thinking about some simple action, for example, cleaning your teeth. This action you have committed in the past, do in the present and will do in the future. Consistently imagine (remember): • how you cleaned your teeth five years ago; • how you brushed your teeth a week ago; • how you brushed your teeth; • How you will brush your teeth next week.

Systema SV It is important to notice the differences in the way that you "see" the same event. What allows you to know what one you did in the past and the other in the future ... What differences in perception systems allow you to know that one event occurred many years ago and another only a week ago? If you begin to determine where the future, the present and the past are in space. Your gestures will indicate different points. You will "see" the events in different places of space. A typical way of representing the future is to present it less certain than the past. If we compare the memory, the "picture" of five years ago with the "picture" of a week ago, we will find that the "picture" five years ago is less than the "picture" of the week ago. It is also important to determine the location of the "picture", its size, detail, transparency, brightness, focus, color, etc. Most people have a past to their left, and the future to the right. Time intervals are usually matched to the channels of perception. The past in humans almost always correlates with the analogue channel of perception, and the future with a logical channel (Figure 23).

Russian Martial Arts However, everything can be the other way around. Therefore, to say: "This is the correct time interval," is the same as saying: "This is the correct way of being, and there are no other ways to live in peace." The time interval has its own length and can exist in a compressed and stretched version. You can try to "move" tomorrow to a distance of 3 m in front of you, next week - at 9 m, next month - already at 12 m ... It's possible that you do not have the motivation to do something that is somewhere there, far away! However, if we strongly squeeze the time interval, there may be a feeling that the future is too heavy, and we will want to move it far away to see it less detailed and to release more space for action in the present. So, time intervals can be changed at will. Compression of the time interval for achieving any goal is accomplished by adding to your future "pictures" that would be as detailed and distinct as "pictures" from your past. You can put in your future symbols representing the direction in which you want to move (Figure 24).

MEGA Event 2016 The calendar of the KUNG FU SCHULE MARTIN SEWER has been for years filled with memorable seminars, events and competitions which take place around the world. A special event comes back over the years: "The event of the year". Here I am thinking about the visit of my Master at the beginning of the year or about our MEGA Event, during which we celebrate, among others things, my birthday. The truth is that today I cannot say which event is now effectively our biggest or most important on our annual calendar. However one thing is certain: this year's MEGA Event was the greatest one that my students have ever organized.

Markets have shut down, countries have closed their doors to travelers, and in some countries grocery store aisles have been left barren. As the fear of coronavirus spreads faster than the disease, raising mor e questions than answers globally, we the teacher of martial arts have been asked to offer some insight into this virus and what it might mean for us, socially, physically, and spiritually. e all feel like we’ve been pushed to some unknown realm and heading straight to some new and unexplored domain, but looking back in time we can see that this world has already faced several apocalyptic scenario in the past like the Black Death era in the medieval times which changed the course of Europe’s history, Spanish Flu, AIDS, Ebola epidemic etc. Once again we are facing a total lock down worldwide living in a state of perplexity; unable to think clearly and understand what the future will look like. What we know is that it wont be as same as before. The life will change; our lives will change. This is the only certainty. To martial artists everyday life is already out of comfort zone. The fight is real. But what we can see nowadays is that this way of living has affected many. People are out of their comfort zone being stressed in so many different aspect of living from being physically confined within four walls, experiencing financial challenges, getting stressed every day more and more with news and unstable political scene. Lot of us working in the sport and martial art sector are facing a big storm and turmoil as the gyms are closing down. At one moment Henry Ford even said, “Exercise is bunk. If you are healthy, you don’t need it; if you are sick you should not take it.” It’s worth a laugh, but wrong as we know that the link between exercise and physical and mental health has been subject of study of many researchers. They showed that physical inactivity was associated with a decline in cognitive function. Exercise as we know has numerous effects all over the body. One of the most important effect is increased blood flow bringing fresh oxygen flow throughout the body, allowing your lungs, heart, brain and muscles to function properly and efficiently. It helps the body fight disease and sickness those bringing us back to the wise words of Juvenal saying “A healthy mind is a Healthy Body: Mens sana in corpore sano”.

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. Krav Maga Attacks and Defenses with the Stick in Krav Maga The stick can be a very dangerous weapon. Baseball shoes with studs on the tips, branches of trees covered with pieces of glass or barbed wire, are objects that are part of the arsenal of gangs that seek to cause the greatest possible injury to their victims. Even these days, when guns have turned the stick into something that may seem harmless, it's a sign of power in the hands of an intimidating aggressor. The use of the stick in Krav Maga began in the early 1940s. It was used by defense groups which fought for the independence of the State of Israel, and r eplaced those hither to used, known as "Kapap". Using firearms at that time was prohibited by order of the British, who dominated the region, which transformed the stick into an instrument of defense. Like ever ything in Krav Maga, stick techniques were created based on the laws of physics, considering the natural mobility of the human body and seeking objectivity, hitting effectiveness and user's safety, as well as the simplicity of movements so as to ensure that all people, regardless of their physical capabilities, could perform them.

ith this view, we created in Krav Maga a specific branch for the use of the stick; attack and defense techniques for all circumstances:

1. Defense against attack with a stick, the defender being disarmed; the defender is in a lying, sitting or standing position end the attack can come from any direction. 2. Stick against stick, this time with the stick in hand; the student learns to integrate it into his body as an extension of his arm and works to increase the resistance of this member for defense. Based on the laws of physics, the lines of force and transmission thereof are used to increase the power of the blow. 3. Stick against rifle and other weapons; military and law enforcement techniques.

The stick length should be used to shorten the distance in the attack and widen the defense area when necessary, directing the impact away from the body. The most used sticks are two in number: the short stick, measuring

approximately 60 cm, and the long stick, from 1m to 1.20m. The short stick size allows you to hide it in the sleeve and the long stick length is similar to that of a walking stick or a field-working tool. In the attacks ahead and above, the greatest power is achieved at the moment when the end of the stick reaches the target, for it's when the lever movement is greater. For this, in the defense movement of this type of attack, we must interrupt the lever as we approach the aggressor, thus reducing the impact. In lateral stick attacks coming from below, the attack movement is very fast and usually tends to be the first in a series trying to penetrate and reach the most sensitive parts of the victim's body. In this case, it is most appropriate to use the legs in defense because they are closer to the object of the attack. The secret to a successful defense is the product of all three factors: awareness, perception and knowledge. Awareness is needed because no matter how calm and alert you are you could be victim of a violent attack. It takes an anticipated perception of the fact in itself and the

knowledge of appropriate self-defense techniques which will save our life.

But remember By perceiving the attack, react with all the power, speed and aggressiveness of which you are capable; it's your life that is at stake, it is not a joke or a sports championship with rules and referees. There's evidence that those who perceived and reacted to an attack at the first moment saved their lives, while those who hesitated and avoided reacting and reversing their position of victims fell. Those who were unable to react in time to reverse a lifethreatening situation lost it when they gave up. The stick is probably the oldest instrument of attack, dating back to the time of the caveman, but it still is a major threat today. Krav Maga techniques were created to give anyone the opportunity to defend himself. They were tested in real situations during the countless conflicts in his country of origin. Paul Vunak presents "Asymmetric Violence" in a video which is a prelude to his work during the last 5 years, focusing more on MMA and developing 4 new "RAT" (Rapid Assault Tactics) programs, at the request of several U.S. military agencies. The expression Asymmetric Violence makes reference to the fact that a small entity can defeat a much bigger entity through deception, which, in our case, involves using attacks to the eyes and genitals as well as biting techniques of the Filipino Kino-Mutai system. Training for everyone Due to short movements, the speed does not have to be pronounced anymore. Coordination is automatically improved when the individual techniques are repeated. Anyone (men and woman) can train with the Gracie brothers without special previous knowledge. Thanks to the simplicity of the techniques and principles, the students become confident, not only on the mat, but also on the street.

A right system Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a complete martial arts method that works realistically against knives and firearms. Rorion Gracie and his brother Royce have also developed special programs for police and military units in Torrance. Another program was created for women's groups. Today, the "Brazilian" Jiu-Jitsu is now spread worldwide. Probably more in the "variant" of Sport-Jiu-Jitsu than self-defense. I believe that one of the reasons is that many martial arts schools and teachers have taken part of Gracie / Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, especially from ground fighting, in order to expand their repertoire. A second reason is certainly that the BJJ competition scene has grown solidly and rapidly through the formation of an International BJJ Federation (IBJJF) and has done so steadily since its inception in 1995. In fact, there are also a lot of female athletes at the IBJJF competitions, because it gives everyone the opportunity to compete, technically and tactically, without having to go home with a black eye. Nevertheless, the BJJ competitions are not entirely without danger, because unfortunately, serious accidents happen again and again, especially on legs, feet, back and neck. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a very popular martial art, and this is evident from the different age groups that are seen in training. In fact, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is also taught to numerous police units and many security companies. We are very proud to have been able to present and teach the Gracie System at numerous training centers for special forces, police, military and security personnel in Germany and Switzerland constantly since 1996.

Successes in Japan Not to forget the fights against various champions that have taken place for over seventy years and are still considered a success of the martial arts scene, even in Japan. The Gracie’s do not wish to harm any style, system, or master through these fights, but rather to show the effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to the world. The exchange with Japan did not only take place when Rickson Gracie, in the middle of the 90's, climbed in the ring at Vale-Tudo Japan. In fact, various champions from Japan and the rest of the world kept coming to fight the Gracie’s. Master Pedro Hemetério told me again and again about the time when he himself still competed at the side of the legendary Carlson Gracie (for his master Hélio Gracie) against Wrestlers, Boxers, Judoka’s, Capoeiristas and Karateka’s. They were not always Vale-Tudo rules, but sometimes they were also Jiu-Jitsu rules at that time: without punching techniques and in white kimono, but without time limits and weight restrictions, and always up to the "submission".

An art is protected Recently, the name "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu®" has been legally protected in the United States (Editor's Note: In Germany, this is not possible for legal reasons) to ensure the originality of this species and its family members. Today, forty family members actively practice Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Fifteen of them are black belt wearers and each is a champion in their weight class.

When Rorion Gracie, the owner of the then Gracie Academy in Torrance and later co-founder of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships), became more and more successful, he tried to legally protect the name "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" as a trademark. However, he did not count on Grandmaster Carley Gracie, one of the eldest sons of Carlos Gracie, who had settled in San Francisco many years earlier (in the 1970s) and run a well-functioning Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy there. The fight lasted long and cost a lot of money, but in the end, Grandmaster Carley won. During this time, more and more top teachers from Brazil came to the United States, and in order to protect themselves from possible legal action, they used the new name "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" instead of "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. This was true for many, including those like the Gracie' cousins, the Machadoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

Strong selection The motto of the Gracieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is: "We only teach what is really effective and what can be used on the street." Only two other instructors are in the instructor program at the Gracie Academy in Torrance who are outside the Gracie Family. One is Fabio Santos from Torrance and the other is Pedro Sauer from Provo/Utah. The Gracie family strives to maintain quality rather than quantity through hard training and strong selection. The Gracie label is certainly still very strong today. But Gracie is not necessarily also Gracie! There are many teachers who use the label Gracie today, but they have practically no idea about the complete Gracie System. They are certainly excellent fighters and athletes, but they are competition oriented. Thanks (!) to the YouTube and online jungle, you can now even get your belt via the Internet. This also exists in other martial arts and because they call it "University", you have the feeling you are doing the right thing. Well, this doesn't only happen in our Jiu-Jitsu community, but also in other martial arts, so why should it be different with Jiu-Jitsu?!

Rickson Gracie A stone's throw away, in Santa Monica, you'll find another Gracie JJ fighter: Rickson Gracie, who recently won all the fights in Japan. Rickson has fifteen years of teaching experience and over 400 fights - all won. Rickson is also the GJJ seminar expert at home and abroad.

Master Rickson Gracie is certainly the absolute living legend of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Vale-Tudo. He is a role model not only as a fighter, but also as a teacher, with his enormous practical and deep knowledge. In 2014 he founded his own federation to promote Jiu-Jitsu throughout the world, the Global Jiu-Jitsu Federation, based in Los Angeles. As founder and president, he has assembled a team to help him spread the vision of Jiu-Jitsu of his father, Hélio Gracie. As Vacirca brothers, we are very proud to have been part of this new adventure from the beginning and to be able to support the JJGF with our partner schools as a Gracie Concepts Team member.

Monteiro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Nelson Monteiro teaches in Del Mar north of San Diego, California. Nelson has been a student of Carlos Gracie Jr. for ten years (note today the leader and founder of Gracie Barra and president of the International BJJ Federation). He has won several times in Brazilian and American competitions. In 1989 he came to America from Rio de Janeiro to share his knowledge. Nelson teaches not only in his school but also in the Carlsbad Police Department. He will soon open another school in San Diego City. Every year Nelson organizes one of the biggest competitions in California, where the best Jiu-Jitsukas meet. Nelson also teaches at countless seminars in America and perhaps soon in Europe.

Relson Gracie In Honolulu, you meet Relson Gracie, another son of Hélio Gracie, who works with the Academy in Torrance. In Corona del Mar, California, a son of Carlos (Gracie Senior), Reylson Gracie, who is not affiliated with the Gracie’s in Torrance, teaches. His headquarters is the "Federação de Jiu-Jitsu de Rio" in Brazil. Master Nelson Monteiro is one of the coolest and most outstanding Gracie Barra leaders and instructors I have ever met. He has been the owner of the GB school in Encinitas, California for many years now. His Jiu-Jitsu is very didactic and a must for every competitor to get to know. In the meantime, many new Gracie and non-Gracie masters have come to USA. Grandmaster Relson Gracie is still at home in Hawaii, but Grandmaster Reylson is, as far as I know, from California to Las Vegas and back home in Rio de Janeiro today. To support him, Grandmaster Reylson enlisted the help of the well-known Jiu-Jitsuka Joe Moreira, who was already very successful in organizing competitions throughout Brazil. Master Joe later opened his own school in Del Mar and today he is probably the most famous BJJ seminar teacher around the globe. No one like him spends so many weeks and months for the sport. We too have been able to welcome him to Zurich several times and will continue to do so.

The Machado Brothers The Machado brothers are not unknown to us thanks to the media. Thanks to the help of martial artists and movie stars

Chuck Norris and Richard Norton they could find many new followers. This new generation of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu - the Machado’s lear ned directly from the Gracie’s - came to America in April 1990 and opened the first school in Encino. I had the great fortune and unique opportunity to learn directly and for a long time from the Machado Brothers, which is a great honor for me. I started with Carlos Machado, but he went to Texas a short time later and so we ended up with his brothers John and Rigan. It was a great and funny time with them both. Today John is also in Texas and successfully runs his Jiu-Jitsu school there. Rigan is still in Los Angeles where he teaches at a famous martial arts school and is very popular with the Hollywood stars as a Jiu-Jitsu instructor.

Craig Kukuk Craig began training eleven years ago with Royler and Hélio Gracie (at Gracie Humaita) in Brazil. Craig is the first American with a black belt in Gracie JiuJitsu under Renzo (Gracie Academy) in Brazil. He teaches six days a week at three different schools in New Jersey Princton, Red Bank, and New York City. Craig and Renzo Gracie have recently produced educational videos. This should help the family to promote their training, especially in Europe. When I wrote this article in 1995, we just had visits from Hawaii and New York. A student of Grandmaster Relson from Hawaii and good friend (George) of mine, who was also a top Judoka, visited us during his further education as a doctor in Lucerne and taught a few lessons at our Academy. At the same time, a student of Renzo Gracie and Craig Kukuk from New York visited us. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name, but I can remember his presents very well, namely red T-shirts with the black and white logo of Renzo and Craig printed on them, which was later also shown on their teaching videos.

Pioneers of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu All families, whether Gracie, Machado, Kukuk or Monteiro, work hard and

intensively to promote their training style. The basic principle is the same for all Brazilian families: they all specialize in ground fighting. For all GJJ instructors, as well as the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), 86% of fights end up on the ground. Most martial arts instructors in the U.S. have (therefore) included Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in their own curriculum in whole or in part. When I go to an event, I practically never walk around with a Jiu-Jitsu T-shirt or hoody unless it is a seminar or training. I am interested, in everything that has to do with exercise and well-being. Recently I was again at such an event, where my good friend Jong-Hyung Schwaar, an excellent Swiss Korean Hapkido master, accompanied me. When we came together in this lecture for small group work, one of the participants asked me if I also came from Karate. I said no, I came from Jiu-Jitsu and so the other one said: "...oh yes, from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!?" So, the other guy said: "Is it true that all fights end on the ground?" Well, if all (?) fights end on the ground, I don't know, and I don't go down on the street voluntarily, because I don't know if the attacker is alone. But, if I should come to the ground - wanted or unwanted, then for sure, I know what I should do and what I shouldn't do well. Unfortunately, even today, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is often considered to be an "almost pure" ground fighting system and I think that's a great pity. It is true that some Gracieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, but not all, have difficulty learning new things - things that do not come from Jiu-Jitsu. But there are some good examples like Kywan Gracie Behring who trains under the Wing-Chun master Randy Williams and many others. I also remain interested in other things today and continue to train in all aspects that can strengthen and improve me. However, I was and am not an MMA and No-Gi fan, and I remain true to my (or our) Gracie Concepts idea. In the stand I like to continue to learn from my Wing-Chun, Pentjak Silat and Muay-Thai masters, and for me there is no other martial art - like the Filipino Kali and Eskrima, which can teach me practical techniques of handling weapons. The "oldschool" Gracie Jiu-Jitsu of my teacher Pedro HemetĂŠrio remains the core of our Gracie Concepts, teaching solutions both standing and on the ground in a way that does not require training like an athlete, because this knowledge is meant for the street and not for winning competition belts and medals, which can certainly have its appeal at a young age. In 2014 I was diagnosed with a chronic herniated disc. After a long and rather hard time between hospital and rehab, during which I also had to close my own Jiu-Jitsu school, it was clear to me that there were some things I could not do in the future in the same way as before. But I can tell you today that my Gracie Concepts has not changed one bit. That's because, as a younger person, I had already investigated the future and was always thinking about getting older. Of course, I had to adapt the training and the lessons a little bit to myself, but overall, it goes on! Unfortunately, even students of mine who studied

with me for several years did not understand this. They then preferred to switch to an online program instead of continuing to seriously study JiuJitsu. But that's also the nice thing about it, everybody can call himself master and teacher today, if you can really teach someone something or not, will show up in time, you can buy the belt and the certificate within seconds with one mouse click and your credit card. In this difficult time, which will still be with us after the coronavirus, I wish all readers a good and above all healthy time. I hope, for all of us, that we will soon have this time behind us and that we will soon be able to train, learn and exchange experiences on our tatami together again. In this new work, Olivier Pierfederici shows the difference between real Close-Combat and Self-Defense, something that is not always too clear. True real Close-Combat is a mainly offensive and non-defensive technique whose sole purpose is the final neutralization of the aggressor, always keeping in mind that he is never alone.
