"To see clear it's enough to change the gaze direction." Antoine de Saint-Exupery "I have sometimes suspected that the only thing without mystery is happiness, because it justifies by itself." Jorge Luis Borges eyond the evident lies the essential. The essential is invisible; what gives value to the cup is its emptiness, but we all look at the cup. That's how perception faces mystery. We watch, hear, feel, store information, millions of data per second, to place in our environment, and react in it; we process the data according to learned codes, to schemes that have been internalized from the very moment they were bor n, and based on built mechanisms that are the result of millions of years of evolution with a single purpose: Prevail, exist, reproduce ourselves... and the wheel in which we are inserted as a species may keep turning. At some point in our evolution, a spark of consciousness jumped and forced us to move forward in another process, quite different from the common tasks with other mammals: the one of our evolution as individuals, and, along with it, the need to place ourselves before the mystery. What are we? Where does the essence of human beings lie? Our body is a vehicle, certainly important, because it gives us the opportunity to interact and correspond to stimuli and the environment in the material plane, but it is a complex casing that wears out and ends up failing. The mind continues to be an accompaniment of this biology although it transits into much more subtle planes than the physical body, but anyway it's also exposed to the vicissitudes of the passing of time and the many limitations inherent in its biological nature. The classics face the consequent dimensional jump to the next grade in many ways, because when we start talking about soul, spirit, or any sense of that which is intangible, we sail in stormy seas, in which setting stable parameters, almost always involves an act of faith.

Religions solve this problem with suggestions and explanations related to their own description of mystery, structured through prophets and revelations, and are satisfactory enough for most people. Others, convinced that he that is born piglet shall die pig, roam throughout science, agnosticism and materialism, not quite knowing what to do with their innate brain portion destined to magical thinking. Eventually, one and all, sooner or later, we will have to look at mystery, face to face, at least at the moment of the "ultimate fate"; with some luck, during our life journey, some occasions will come across our lives to make us wake up on our own to these other realities of the intangible and we'll be able to seize them. I love the ways of the midst, although they are not the easiest to be transited. I have checked with certainty (and even vehemently) that we have enough tools to not need build a faith based on something else than our own experience. But to have a possibility of interacting with the spiritual world, you need to travel along a way paved with something like the wisdom of the ancients, those who, long before us, dared to look at mystery with the zeal, daring and skepticism of a gypsy when it comes to buy a horse. But these trails are rather scarce because few are those who embarked on this quest and even fewer those who were willing to share their experiences. When you leave the flock, the other sheep look at you like a wolf, especially if you are far away from them. Sheep, like humans, the closer they huddle in group, the more dust they raise by walking and the less they see; their defense lies in the stacking and the hope that the predator takes first those outside. But facing the Great Predator, the one with the scythe, no one can escape, and in one way or another, the finiteness of personal existence confronts us with dilemmas and questions that overcome the framework of the own

natural concern about surviving or not, of that which is essential to us. Those who have stood before a corpse perhaps have felt a kind of strange and quirky sensation of emptiness surrounding them. There's nothing there, even when we are seeing the body of the person we had met, there is only emptiness. Nothing animates (same word as soul in Latin, "anima") that individual and only the vertigo of an immense void is present. One of the most recurring questions at this point is that of identification. He who is uniquely identified with his carnal wrap, knows only that. He who does it with his mental phase, prefers that. And finally, the one who does it with the intangible perceives the world from that watchtower. The latter are the least because in that regard, the law of the pyramid, as the definer element of everything in this plane, is inevitably enforced ... that is, many down... few above... The mystery is such because it does not manifest within the common parameters, not because it does not have a nature, content and specific ways, but to penetrate it, you must transgress the normal limits of perception, the common agreements and the group consensus, which forces us to look at things as we all accept they are. Said transgression involves at some point a necessary leap, an initiation that breaks the frame of references we have built working hard, and such maneuver supposes dying to what we are so that something new is born. I will not deceive you, neither everyone wants nor everyone can muster the required energy and courage to do so. However much this is a subtle process, complex and painful, contrary to what one might expect, is

something to which we are constantly bound. Ancient Mexican shamans said that the hard part was not to take the leap, but to keep constantly our perception of active reality fixed on just one point: consensus. They said that the effort to do so consumed all our energies in such a way that we didn't have any more energy available to be free, clean and authentic. Infinity, like water, has a very thin snout and it seeps through every corner of our everyday, flooding us inadvertently. Exploring spirituality is a horizon much closer than we can imagine; it ends up having nothing to do with religion, except that both focus on the mystery through different lenses. The latter conceives the inconceivable to make it acceptable, and teaches moral standards for traveling in this lifetime kindly in group. And the other faces mystery in a barefaced way, without formal barriers and other preconceived formulas than the own peculiarities of its lineage, based on the experience of the elderly. One judges and the other accepts; the first knows, the second verifies. In the end, before the great arcane, there are no possible versions, only the great truth of an unparalleled experience, comparable only to that moment that none remembers... birth. Beginning and end are complementary opposites, and every minute in between is an exceptional opportunity to go beyond the obvious, the plausible, the consensus. Running the veils of Isis, revealing eternal truthsâ&#x20AC;Ś there has never been a bigger challenge since the spark of consciousness sprang out! Life explains by itself if we so decide, but for the hungry, curious, and courageous travelers of the infinite, this feels considerably short. Good trip to everybody! End

TAOWS is Wing Chun Since its inception, at TAOWS we have been concerned with improving what we do every day. It is the essence of our institution and at the same time a rule that we imposed ourselves when we designed the structure of our house. We wanted to practice Kung Fu / Wushu and for that, that energy focused on continuous improvement must be always present. About to reach its tenth anniversary as an association dedicated to Martial Arts, I think it's time to look back to see what has been done. In Martial Arts, as in life, this aspect is something that we don't do on a regular basis and which I personally think we should do more often. It is the only way to know if we are moving forward or walking in a circle. I come from the lineage of Leung Ting through the direct transmission of Sifu Victor GutiĂŠrrez, from the German branch. This branch of the Yip Man lineage, that was developed by Sifu K. R. Kernspecht, is probably the largest in the world when you consider the number of practitioners, teachers, and schools around the world. Not that I consider quantity an important piece of information, but what is indeed important is the quality of the first generations of practitioners, in which most of them were known warriors, who today are running great institutions.

s for my learning period, I think few have had a closer contact and have enjoyed a more direct teaching than what I received from my teacher for about 18 years, once he devoted himself body and soul to teaching Wing Chun. For a good number of years, I accompanied him constantly all over the world learning from him and from all the great ones of the old EWTO. Sometime later, Victor Gutierrez decided to abandon the path of Chinese Martial Arts to focus on his personal vision of combat. At that moment we separated our paths and all we have

left today is good memories. From those days I try to keep the good, which was a lot. Few people have Sifu Victor's ability to analyze combat, and his tireless spirit for practice. Sifu Victor GutiĂŠrrez has dedicated more than half his life to promoting Wing Chun and expanding it around the world and, as I explained in my first book (High Level. Budo International), it is something that few people recognize, although, over time, his great work will surely end up being recognized by everyone. Today more than 80% of Wing Chun practitioners in Spain come from or started training thanks to the work that Mr. GutiĂŠrrez did one day. For years I was also the coordinator of a small team in the eastern coastal region of Spain, where I managed to direct some 20 schools and a few hundred students. Some of them are today leaders of Wing Chun organizations trying to make their way in the always complicated world of Martial Arts.

Some of them for merit and quality, others simply because they like to call themselves masters and â&#x20AC;&#x153;poseâ&#x20AC;? as such. I personally get further and further away from the great titles in the world of Martial Arts, and I think I'm still miles away before I can be considered master of anything. It's not false humbleness, it is simply that my masters (those who were and those who are) have so much level and knowledge that putting me on the same height as them just seems ridiculous to me. I prefer to define myself as a practitioner who likes to study and ask questions. Among the greatest of my fortunes is that many of those who started practicing with me now almost 25 years ago, continue to walk by my side. Some of them are my family. In all this time, as you can imagine, we have gone through times of all kinds, good and not so good. Actually, as in all families and relationships. What gives more credit to all this is that all of them have been putting up with me, this humble servant of yours, for almost 25 years. And that's quite a task! Especially with someone like me, a tough aging character who's undoubtedly bound to end up becoming the typical old curmudgeon (am I already?) who complains about almost everything. One of the things that concerned me most in my student days was trying to understand the why of things. I must admit I never was a practitioner with a special ability. I lacked the talent of others for the practice. In the first course of a Wing Chun Grandmaster I ever attended, back in 1994, Leung Ting asked one of the course instructors to hit me. As much as I tried, I was unable to perform properly the technique Grandmaster Leung Ting had asked me to do, and he ended up refusing to keep on trying to teach me. He just said: "He's too dumb to learn Wing Chun." I keep a very special memory of that seminar...

In what not even Leung Ting can beat me is in perseverance, work and effort. My lack of talent was always made up for with more work than anyone. I am superior to many of them in those aspects, and believe me, at my age that's not going to change. It will remain so. One of my phrases repeated constantly in my courses, "... May inspiration catch us working ...", has become a MOTTO for me and the members of TAOWS. I have many reasons for this, and besides they are varied. The first one is that I am passionate about Martial Arts. The second is the responsibility and the weight of lineage. Understand! Lineage, for many, is just a piece of paper with which to â&#x20AC;&#x153;pose on Instagramâ&#x20AC;?. For me it is the responsibility of leading MY FAMILY in the best way to the next generation. This can sometimes lead to hard decisions that are not understood. But even erring, I will always do it with that intention: to take care of my art and my people. One of the things that I personally find most satisfying, of all the work done in these years, is to see that our art has become something alive. I've had many discussions with people who undoubtedly love Wing Chun as much or even more than me, but who have completely different points of view. Between those who do not want to change a single point of what they consider to be the purest "Yip Man Ving Tsun", and those who believe that "classic" Wing Chun is something totally useless and propose a radical change, I firmly believe on balance.

"The balance of opposites" It is one of my favorite and most used phrases. A clear wink to Taoism that I have been so passionate about in recent years. Personally, I've tried to understand both parties to make a suit tailored to everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs. I don't believe in a style that can reach the next millennium without searching for efficiency, and that is a reliable method of combat. But neither would I want it to be a "lethal weapon", empty of everything that makes up the Art and philosophy that are an inseparable part of Wing Chun Kung Fu: Philosophy, history, oral transmission through the "Kuen Kuit", etc. Physical and Mental, stable / unstable, movement and stillness, Siu Nin Tao and Chum Kiu Tao, in short, ZEROS and ONES ... All present in that search for the balance of opposites proposed by the Wing Chun system.

"... Tradition IS and EXISTS within the essence of its tradition ..." This phrase from the editor of this magazine, Mr. Alfredo Tucci, inspired me in my search when I decided my solo adventure outside the leadership of my former teachers. Few people would have given a penny for this project called TAOWS (The Art Of War Society), although I have to admit that were not few those who offered me to lead the projects in Spain. My work at the head of the former European organization of Wing Chun in the Spanish East Cost had not gone unnoticed for many. Some of these proposals were very flattering because of where they were coming from, but were discarded for a clear reason: I wanted to do a better Wing Chun. I wanted to IMPROVE what we were doing and where I found multiple inconsistencies both in the training and teaching system and in the way we approached practice and its application. I wanted to make Wing Chun better. I wanted to IMPROVE what we did, and in which I found multiple inconsistencies both in the training and teaching system as well as in the way we approach practice and its

application. Honestly, and again in retrospect, this is undoubtedly the point in which I feel most satisfied after these almost ten years. We are clearly EVOLVING in each and every one of those aspects. "Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication ..." Leonardo da Vinci Wing Chun is a training system that bases its strength on elements that look simple but contain great sophistication. If we were to point out the Wing Chun Kuen pure techniques and characteristics, we would surely run into a lot of problems. The "Eternal Spring Fist" is a hybrid style. A "crossbreeding" that emerged from the mix and alternation of the combat styles arisen in southeast China. Its astonishing capacity to grow in number of practitioners around the world has a lot to do with precisely this element: it does not have very complicated techniques, at least in appearance. Often many techniques can be applied in different ways and may even serve different strategies. This typical versatility of the techniques of the southern styles of China finds its maximum expression in the Wing Chun system. Many insist on showing a correct and unique use for each technique, when in fact there are different uses for all of them. Understanding the versatility principle of the of techniques and being able to open our minds is precisely what has enabled us to reach this conclusion. No one is in possession of the absolute truth. Opening our minds and practicing

relentlessly changes the way we see things and then everything begins to be coherent and useful. "To know if the wind is favorable... first you have to know where you want to go..." Those who think about the good of their students will benefit from them with no other perks in return. One thing that many do not seem to understand is that for us who make up the TAOWS Academy, practicing is the most important point of

what we do. It's the passion for Martial Arts that keeps us on track. Of course, I perfectly understand that there can be people who don't like what we do. No drama. There are also those who will never accept the ideas we propose, no matter how good they can be. These people, who are blinded by their EGO, argue and oppose our ideas simply because they are not able to see beyond their mediocrity or think about what is really important: their students and Kung Fu. Their energy is totally focused in things as futile and stupid as discussing or oppose to what others do or propose. A phrase that I read a few days ago in one of those slides that they publish on social networks and that said something like "you will always be criticized by people who are doing less than you...", clearly shows this sad situation in the world of Wing Chun. We should be twinned and each day we are more separated. But, sadly, I think that is hopeless. So I will go on doing what one of my great masters (Steven Tappin) told me in a private talk ... "Do everything with your heart, with honesty ... until one day, everyone, including you, will be proud of the printed badge you wear in your training t-shirt...â&#x20AC;? Well, I feel that pride and, now I know, my people feel it too! And for those who don't like what we do... simply an affectionate greeting and a large sign on the door with a clear "DO NOT DISTURB". Let's start ... Siu Nin Tao Stability, balance, continuous pressure. The basis of the system. Everything is contained in Siu Nin Tao and Siu Nin Tao is everything in Wing Chun. Origin and End. We start at Siu Nin Tao and every time we lose the position ONE we do whatever it takes in order to return to the origin, that is, to the "balance" that allows us to generate constant pressure. Only with balance and a balanced structure we can attack and defend. But above all we can exert pressure. Pressure is critical in fighting systems that attempt to impose a close range and front guard strategy. Pressure, as the great coach Cus Damato used to say, makes even good fighters seem not to be so skilled. Knowing that, everything we do must be focused on pressing the enemy and not feeling overwhelmed when we are the ones pressured by him. Pressure CHANGES and TRANSFORMS everything. In combat and in life. If we are able to understand

Chum Kiu Tao Retrieve and sink bridges. Biu Jee Tao The "scrambled" form. The alternation between ONE and ZERO (Defense and Attack) or whoever dominates the pressure dominating the center is the essence of the Wing Chun system. Everything we do has to focus on understanding and developing this. Although sometimes the situation, for various reasons, becomes CHAOS. That chaos requires the implementation of techniques of the Third Form: Biu Jee Tao (Flying Finger Form). The techniques practiced in this third form are mainly used when we are not able to attack or defend clearly. In that situation of uncertainty where you cannot choose the technique and you try to survive or succeed, the Biu Jee form becomes the perfect tool. Always with the aim of returning to balance and being able to direct the attack; on many occasions we will have to resort to them. The "old masters" say that Biu Jee is used against practitioners of other styles or against various adversaries. And they should never be taught to people outside the "family." Be that as it may, they occupy a very important part in the technical arsenal of the system

Muk Yak Chong The form of the wooden dummy Wing Chun families and lineages often generate dynamics of opinion about who has the original and authentic form: 108, 116 or 200 movements. Important variants from one version to another... At TAOWS we have a clear theory: There is not and there never was a single original form. The Wooden Doll is the PLACE where a master could practice and VISUALIZE the different strategies of the system, where he could practice Siu Nin Tao (ONE), Chum Kiu Tao (ZERO) and Biu Jee Tao (Scramble / emergencies). All in combination and in search of skills and abilities.

In times when information was secret, the Wooden Dummy became the best of friends. Strong, resistant and SILENT (he doesn't tell the "secrets"!).

Six and a Half Point Pole The Spear of the Boatman. At TAOWS we think that the Long Pole form has many â&#x20AC;&#x153;secretsâ&#x20AC;?. For years we have studied its origin, historical evolution, and above all, how it can help us as Kung Fu practitioners. Throwing my "intention" three meters away from me makes me stronger, more compact and connected. Therefore, more prepared to carry out the struggle and balance of ZERO and ONE.

There is much hidden in this form of simple appearance. As almost always in Wing Chun, everything that looks simple, in the end it is not as easy as it seems...

Bat Jam Dao The form of the Eight Cutting Blades. It's considered the MASTER in Wing Chun by everyone at TAOWS. The form that gives meaning to the style from its origin and that closes it. The Eight Cutting Blades represent the synthesis of techniques and strategies to fight with frontal guard and the different ways in which they can be used in combat against any enemy. "WEAPONS SHOW you what you HAVE to do, instead of what you WOULD LIKE to doâ&#x20AC;Ś" Steve Tappin This phrase by Grand Master Steven Tappin (Escrima Concepts) gives meaning to the practice of knives. At TAOWS they are one of the most important parts of advanced study. We have developed

exercises never performed before in order to efficiently practice and “rescue” that spirit of Foshan Kung Fu that gave rise to the style of combat to which we dedicate body and soul: Wing Chun Kuen

Kuen Kuit. Fighting Songs For some time now, I have been gathering the Kuen Kuit of Wing Chun Kung Fu. Saving these fighting songs (refrains) will allow us to compact technique, philosophy and combat so as to get the ESSENCE of Wing Chun Kung Fu In a few years I will have a book on this subject, which I think will be of general interest to Wing Chun practitioners, so we keep on working on it. Kuen Kuit is a part forgotten by the vast majority of schools and in TAOWS it's becoming an increasingly important part in the transmission of knowledge. Shaolin Components of Shaolin Kung Fu In several articles I've mentioned the Shaolin style as a multisystem that was gradually cr eated thr oughout its long history, but, we have to keep in mind that most of the current styles are from the late Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty (last dynasty of China), onwards to the present day. More specific research should be done on the transition of styles, from the fall of the Qing Dynasty, cultural revolution, etc., to the way we know them today. Undoubtedly, many of these styles have evolved and will continue to do so based on the needs of people and society in general. This time I want to share a brief summary of the components of Shaolin Kung Fu so that you can get an idea of its structure, which I consider very important if we are to have a broader understanding of this system.

Shaolin et us remember that this system was not created by a single person, but rather, it's the millennial inheritance of experiences of people like us who lived various realities at different times in the history of China. Although Martial Arts are based on the art of war, we mustn't forget about the main religious component (Buddhism) of the Shaolin system, since the Temple was primarily established as a place for the study of Buddhism, and it was later that Martial Arts were incorporated. Nor should we miss to mention that because of its geographical location, the Temple was also greatly influenced by Taoism and Confucianism, thus creating a unique philosophical system in the world that unites the three main philosophies of China: Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. The union of these three philosophies - or religions, why not? (although in my case I've always considered them philosophies) - is reflected in a stone stele in the Monastery. Brief review of the stone stele that contains the symbology of the three religions and nine currents of thought:

This stone stele was carved during the Ming Dynasty by Zhu Zaibian 朱载堉 1536-1611, a descendant of the ninth generation of the first Ming emperor and a notable writer and mystic. This image was called 混元三教九流图, or the Hunyuan Image of the Three religions and Nine Teachings. It represents the

depth of Shaolin teachings that encompasses all of Chinese culture. In the image the three Masters, Lao Zi, Confucius and Buddha are shown in an embrace. The circle shape has a special meaning in Chinese culture and can be taken as a symbol of fullness, harmony, perfection and purity and in Chinese metaphysics it represents the origin of the Universe or the source of life.

Shaolin The concept of the combination of the three religions began in the Northern and Southern dynasties and gained popularity in the Song dynasty, but it was not until the Ming Dynasty that it became widespread among the men of letters. The term Hunyuan comes from Taoism and represents the beginning of the universe, chaotic and formless, and it is said that it was first used during the Tang dynasty by the Taoist current Qingxi 青溪道士. The image is made up of three circles, the first circle represents the universe, the central circle with the three men represents the three religions and the third smaller circle symbolizes the nine streams of teachings represented by a flower with nine leaves.

Shaolin As we have seen, Chinese culture and that of Shaolin Temple are the one and same unity.

Components of Shaolin Kung Fu The Shaolin Kung Fu school has a long history and boasts a system which is rich in content and a structure that includes training methods (gong fa), routines or forms with or without weapons, and chi kung techniques for health and meditation. Shaolin Kung Fu is considered one of the deepest and most content-rich Martial Arts systems in China and the world. According to Shaolin Temple records, Shaolin Kung Fu consists of 708 forms, including 552 series of Quan or fist techniques and weapon techniques; 156 other series such as the 72 unique abilities, which in turn are divided into 36 wai gong techniques and 36 nei gong techniques, qi gong for health, grappling, wrestling, dian xue, etc. As for the existing forms or taolu of Shaolin Kung Fu, we can divide them into 178 empty hand forms, 193 forms with weapons, 59 forms of duilian (dual events), plus another 115 techniques without classification, altogether 545 different forms. These forms and abilities make up an elaborate Kung Fu system based on real combat that has evolved and taken shape throughout the history of China and the Temple itself. Krav Maga Krav Maga I.M.A.D.S… The formidable weapons of the human body. Last Chapter Regarding the strikes with the upper limbs of the human body we dwelled deeply on the elbows. Now we are going to focus on strikes of the lower limbs, and, more precisely, on those carried out with the knees. Like our previous analysis of the elbow, we will first take a look at the anatomical composition of the knee. The knee joint connects three bones, the femur (thigh bone), the tibia (shinbone or shankbone) and the patella (kneecap), through three joints: the patellofemoral joint and the double tibiofemoral joint. Simply put, the knee is a joint that connects the femur (which supports the thigh) to the tibia (which supports the leg). The resulting movements are: • Extension: This movement allows the tibia to be placed on the extension of the femur. It is the quadriceps that extend the knee when it contracts. • Flexion: This movement brings the tibia closer to the buttocks. Knee flexion is caused by the posterior thigh muscles, and more specifically by the hamstrings, which are antagonistic to the quadriceps. • External rotation of the leg on the thigh (bent knee) • Internal rotation of the leg on the thigh (bent knee) Now that we have a general overview of the knee joint, let’s dwell on a bone of major importance since it is the point of contact or hitting element: the kneecap (patella), that small chestnut-shaped shield. Scientific research considers that this bone has several uses: • It allows centralizing the forces exerted on the joint, • Plays a protective role • Helps improving leg extension When teaching a movement that ends in contact with a greater or lesser intensity (in this case during a blow), it is imperative that the instructor knows precisely which part of the body will be subjected on impact.

Fearsome weaponsâ&#x20AC;Ś Elbow & knee strikesâ&#x20AC;Ś When performing a knee kick, the leg (shin) bends to join the thigh. During this bending, the patella (kneecap) is placed at the front ... like a shield. This small bone will form the tip of the knee, which will be on the front line during the impact. By its constitution, its position and its application by a bulky muscle assembly is actually one of the most devastating weapons. However, in spite of the several recorded brilliant performances of our knee techniques, there are always certain limitations. Many of us have experienced more than once the unpleasant knee-to-knee bump, with the immediate consequences: severe pain and temporary incapacity of greater or lesser duration to resume the course of action.

Krav Maga Studies and experiments have shown that certain parts of the body are more likely to experience a high intensity impact. The fact remains that, in terms of damage, zero risk simply does not exist.

Minimizing risks over and over againâ&#x20AC;Ś There is still a solution to minimize the risk of injury. Indeed, if we have identified the strikes that will be part of our arsenal, we can still take care of them by using them wisely. We have understood that, despite their advantageous constitution, there are limits as to their use in selfdefense. Therefore, in order to overcome these limits, we will favor striking on less dense surfaces, where most of the sensitive or vulnerable points of the human body are located. To do so, once again, it is imperative to have sufficient knowledge in order to identify them.

Hwa Rang Do The Hwarang’s Path – Humility (part 2) By: Grandmaster Taejoon Lee

In the secular world, we try to give ourselves value and worth by stating causality and with such grand theories as the Butterfly Effect – t h a t t h e f l a p p i n g o f a b u t t e r f l y ’s w i n g s thousands of miles away can cause a tsunami; that even the smallest changes can create a ripple effect resulting in large changes. It gives the individual an illusion of hope and purpose to think no matter how small or insignificant they are, that they somehow through their actions have helped directly, but mostly indirectly many people and made the world a better place, bringing some sense of momentary contentment. Although this thought might be comforting, we fail to examine the inverse effect. In the same way all of the smallest actions we choose can create the opposite affect of indirectly negatively impacting the world and making it a worse place. However, our mind cleverly avoids the contemplation of our ill actions forcing it deeper into our subconscious, protecting our fragile egos.

Hwa Rang Do he way we become humble is when we are humbled; when we discover that there is a person better, stronger, faster, smarter, than oneself. Even then, we never stay humble as we struggle to improve ourselves so that we may become better than the one who humbled us. In reality, we can never accept that another person is better than us and that is why we always look for the faults in others and fail to see our own. When one is humiliated, that means he/she was not humble and no one likes being humiliated; no one says thank you for humbling me, rather they will lash out and try to harm you, to prove that you are wrong. Jordan played his best when he felt threatened, creating enemies in his mind, either real or imaginary, using the negative emotion of anger as some kind of a wonder drug that allowed him to focus all his faculties on the single purpose of winning. Musashi’s duels were all attempts to humble each other, to prove who is the best at the cost of killing one another. Although, Musashi has written in his “Book of Five Rings” to treat your enemies as if he were a guest in your own home, with respect and courtesy, at the end of the day some one had to die. Treating the person you’re going to kill like a guest or an enemy, cordially or rudely really has nothing to do with the opponent, but everything to do with your own state of mind. Contrary to Jordan, it was not the emotion of anger that he needed to win, but as Musashi phrases it, “the state of Void”, having no thought or emotion. It is in order to bring calmness to the self emotionally to be able to respond with mental clarity to win the duel. The stronger the opponent, the greater the enemy, the better one becomes. Both Jordan and Musashi found ways in order to win and they could not have been best without having enemies as they push you to become better. The desire to prove that oneself is best is fueled from the fear of humiliation, the fear of being insignificant, which is often a greater fear than even the fear of death. Hence, pride arises from fear, but humility from love. In reality they are both founded on love; pride rising from the fear of being unloved and humility rises from knowing that you are loved. Ultimately, fear is our worst and most formidable enemy.

It is a world that is impure, corrupt, imperfect, and fallible created by humankind with its core founded on Darwinian Godless notion of survival of the fittest. Even before Darwin, the Fall of Man ensured the fall of mankind. The Age of Enlightenment offered the justification for manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actions without being held accountable to objective morals and values. No person, no ruler, no king, no tyrant, no great thinker in all of history who have ever tried to change the world ever did so thinking that their way would make the world a worse place to live. They did what they did, no matter how horrific or inhumane, with the idea that somehow they would change the world for the better. If the Theory of Evolution is true; that we are all here due to random chance of matter plus time and ensuring our survival is by eliminating the weak and propagating the strong through natural selection, then there can be no room for humility, only winners and losers, the weak and the strong with being the best as its highest virtue. And, so it is! Humility is the act of being humble and humble is defined as not proud or arrogant; having feelings of insignificance, inferiority, subservience; low in rank, importance, status, quality, lowly. Can a person without God ever truly be humble? I would think not. Without God, then evolution must be true and in that case being humble by its definition is only weakness and cannot survive. Not only that, it needs to perish to ensure the survival of the species.

Hwa Rang Do To be humble without God is the same as Musashi’s treatment of his enemy whom he’s going to kill. It will only be a pretention, to seem humble to others, to bring some inner calmness, a selfish act with ulterior motives. Musashi might have gained some sense of atonement through his prayers, achieving peace within himself, yet peace cannot bring fulfillment. To rid oneself of emotions is not human and it is not possible. The goal of suppressing or detaching oneself from emotions is to avoid pain and suffering. Being alone is not human as our greatest expression as humanity is love and it is because of love that we also suffer. Even though it was by choice that Musashi died alone, it does not mean he wasn’t lonely. One may have peace, but that does not fill the emptiness of the heart. Humility without God is weakness personified. It is elevated to be noble only when there is God. Many claim that they care not of what others think and only do things for themselves and for their own satisfaction and approval. This is a complete lie and an absolute delusion used as smoke and mirrors to bring down the other’s defensive guard. They say this beating their chests to show their autonomy where in fact they are slaves to the approval and recognition of others. Their entire sense of worth is based on the opinion of others and need constant validation. It is a slippery road to take for a person claiming that they are in complete control, independent of influence by others, and will always be their ideal humble self. Even though in their beginnings they might have been humble, as they accumulate more successes, more wins, more public approval, greater fame, and wealth, they cannot help but to

fall into the delusions of grandeur, feeling invincible, infallible, entitled, and deserving of even more. One is wrong to think that people, who possess fame, power and wealth because surely they have plenty, more than enough, can ever be humble. On the contrary, it is not within our human nature. There exists always some exceptions, but most all with power and wealth feel that they are deserving as they worked so hard for it and that they must have been gifted by God or determined by fate because they are worthy. It is illogical to think that they are underserving of their successes and fortunes, thus others who are with less fortune are the way they are because they deserve what they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have. This is the human condition. Even though we start off with the best of intentions, just as a child innocent and pure, the world corrupts us and the more we want of the world, the more corrupt and delusional we become. Jordan in the documentary series was quoted to have said that he was â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Black Jesusâ&#x20AC;?. Surely, Musashi also felt he was invincible. How can he not when he has never lost? We are all guilty of self-aggrandizement and thinking our opinion matters, that what we think is the truth where in fact all we have is an opinion and opinions are not truths. In reality,

Hwa Rang Do the truth is that Jordan, although great he was, he was just a basketball player and Musashi, although undefeated, was just great at killing people with a sword. It is the lacking of humility and building up of pride that humanity suffers from the beginning and continues to suffer. There can never be a perfect society created by imperfect beings. There can never be peace through violence. It is when we come to understand that only perfection can create perfection; that only peace can produce peace and that we as human beings are neither perfect nor holy; that no matter how hard we try that we will never be gods; when we discover unconditional true love; only when we surrender to God can we be truly be humble. It is when we come to understand that our father will love us no matter what we do or who we are, not that we have proved worthy or deserving, but because we are his child so we are loved. And, because we know we are loved by our father, our Holy Father, that we can love and be humble to one another; that proving we are best so that we can feel worthy of love should not be our life’s pursuit, but rather doing the best that we can because we want to please the Father whom we love, who created each one of us in his own image for a unique purpose. After a lifetime of being a Hwarang, I have lear ned the true meaning of “Flowering” within the words “Flowering Knights.” “Hwa”, meaning flower, which symbolizes the blossoming, becoming enlightened, but enlightened with what? It

took two thousand of years of history for it’s true meaning to come to light to a Hwarang. A flower, which possesses the essence of beauty, peace, and love by its mere existence, without any pretention, threat, or possible harm has been our ideal to aspire to become. There is one man in history, one master who possesses all of these qualities, exemplifying the perfect human being who changed the world without any violence, armed only with love, with ultimate humility as He was also God, who became flesh among us, Jesus Christ. I would like to end with an anecdote from a man that has made an immense impact in my life, the late Dr. Ravi Zacharias, who has recently passed away. He was one of the greatest apologists of our modern times who was called to God in his death bed from attempted suicide at the age of seventeen, who made a promise to God that if He saved him, he would dedicate his entire life in seeking the Truth, leaving no stone unturned. There was a boy, who was on a soccer team, but he was not very good and never played, only sitting on the sidelines dreaming of a day when he can participate in a game. He never missed practice and worked diligently. One day the boy came to the coach and asked if he could miss practice. When the coach asked him why? The boy replied, “My father has passed and I need to attend his funeral.” Of course the coach gave him permission to miss practice. At the next game, the boy begged and pleaded with the coach if he could play, even if it was only for a short while and if he played poorly then he can be pulled out of the game. The game was going well for the team so the coached decided to let him play. The boy played his heart out and did better than ever before. The other coaches were commenting that they should put him in the game more often. When the game was over the coach asked the boy, “Wow, you played great! What got into you? Was it because of your father’s death?” The boy replied, “Well coach, it’s a little more than that. You see my father was blind. Now I know he can see me play for the very first time.”

Kyusho Top Ten #5 Another very versatile point that is the most powerful in affect is the target called ST-9 (Stomach point 9). ST-9, Located on the sternocleidomastoid muscle at the same level of the Adams Apple on the frontal aspect of the muscle group and in between the bands of muscle is the most versatile point of the group. This is on an easily accessible and very sensitive nerve (as it is protecting one of the most vulnerable areas of the human body). This target can be accessed by pressing and striking, but with more dramatic affect with rubbing, stretching or plucking. We must first understand that part of a nerves function is to trigger protective reflexes, which are instantaneous reactions to protect the body from damage or dysfunctions in the body. For example the withdrawal reflex being when you instinctively pulling your hand back from a hot object. Another example would be the blink reflex when something approaches the eye too fast for the brain to assimilate threat level. The crossed extensor reflex is just a withdrawal reflex on one side with the addition of inhibitory pathways needed to maintain balance and coordination. An example of this would be when you step on a sharp object with your right foot as you are walking along, this will initiate a withdrawal of your right leg. Now in order for you to maintain your balance and not fall down, your left leg, which was flexing, will now be extended to plant your left foot. Brining this idea back to our target, by pressing straight in on this point it will cause such severe discomfort that the individual will be influenced by the withdrawal reflex to get away from the pain and or danger to vital structures. This will weaken the grip pull the hand or arm away on that targeted side allowing escape or further escalation in personal defence. This will be a quick reaction that can also quickly diminish and the assault reapplied, so you must be aware of this and follow up accordingly. But this method will not reach a level of incapacitation with pressure alone (unless massive energetic pressure is applied there such as in a strike). But by pressing in a rubbing in specific directions you will cause more severe pain, reflexive actions, motor skill disruption (arms, legs, torso loosing muscle control), even incapacitation (full dysfunction) up to unconsciousness. And to add yet another level of pain and dysfunction, the quicker (not necessarily more force), the action of stretching the more dramatic and dysfunctional it will be on the recipient. This is the idea of plucking, as you would on a guitar string which excites the affected nerve faster and therefore more profoundly.

Kyusho To more fully understand the affects of certain directional pressure, we need to start our applications in a static position and experience the results, with varying pressure methods: • Pressing up and in will tense the body (Especially the back muscles) as it lifts the recipient due to the cross extensor reflex guarding against the rapid rearward loss of balance. This will pull the arm up and away loosing functional control of it. The opposite action of pressing down enacts the withdrawal reflex causing a weakening of the front body as it pulls the organs back away from the attacking direction. This weakening and withdrawal will also cause the body to drop as the muscles totally relax. • Now to escalate the reactions we work the same directional pressure with rubbing the nerve after initial pressure is applied. When quickly stretched upward, the recipient will spring up and back fast enough (depending on the pressure and speed of the rub), to lift the body involuntarily off the ground. This will also cause both arms to have similar reflexive actions as they also both pull back and dysfunction. This is also a temporary reaction, but will last longer than merely pushing the point's will. • Quickly rubbing this nerve downward rapidly will cause a faster buckling of the torso and also of the legs. It can cause a complete collapse of the recipient depending on the speed and force used. This too is temporary, but the recovery will take much longer as the weakened muscles will take more stimuli to regain functionality. This will leave enough time for escape or escalation in retaliation if the circumstances warrant or need it. • It is in striking that we see even more possibility and very intense reactions. By striking up and in at a 45 degree angle you will again lift and tense the body on that side, but also send a shock of pain into the

Kyusho recipient to dysfunction completely or cause the body to loose balance and fall backwards. This will take a substantially longer time to recover and gain functionality of the body. â&#x20AC;˘ By contrast striking down and in will cause the body to drop uncontrollably and cause a loss of consciousness, vision and physical control. This recovery can take several minutes to recover from, in which time the assailant will be weak, confused and impaired vision as well as motor function. Unconsciousness will take even longer to recover from as this direction also causes a loss of blood pressure. This can leave the recipient nauseous, dizzy, have cold sweats and reoccurrence of unconsciousness. In short they are going to feel severely ill and incapable of clear though or reaction.

Scenarios: Now that we know the target, the manner of application and the results, there is little use to work on any specific technique or set of specific techniques. The attacks should be drilled so that the target becomes an automatic response no matter which type/s are used. Grabs, pushes, kicks, hand strikes, weapon attacks or some holds should be spontaneous and varied in location or what is grabbed with one hand or two. By having only one simple response to a variety of attacks will lead to more exacting and probable use. In contrast to practicing set techniques, this will require less thought, complex and coordinated motions, making each response more intensive and instinctive. By reducing the complexity and consistently training the single target there is the possibility to make them more reflexive (automatic) as well. With more spontaneity and random attack, the practitioner can still become more adept under real duress, uncertainty and intensity. When you need less brain or thought processing accomplish your objective, or to get through the stress levels as well and the limiting affects of released adrenaline, the more reliable your defense will be. The use of many techniques or even targets although fun to investigate, become limiting both mentally and physically. If we view our brain being just like a computer, the more information that is input, processed or waiting for processing, will slow the speed and function of the computer. Our brain is no different as it is already responsible for so many tasked to just maintain the human being, adding more than you need will just bog down the mind and limit the possible responses.

So the main idea is to train this target slowly at first to experience first hand the affects and proper applications to obtain then. Then apply them in slow mock attack scenarios that are spontaneous and random so that you become accustomed to and adept at it's use. Then increase the speed and variety of attack, the intensity, and complexity to induce stress like; with weapon, in a stairway, or in dim light), the number of people, clothing, environments etc. When you can accomplish this, there is no need for memorized technique, there will only be a sure focus that will help you attain the objective faster and more efficiently. This brings up another Vital Point, when working to protect ourselves; we must work to respond as we cause the opponent to react. The difference although seemingly slight is actually a completely different dynamic. When we respond, it is an automatic process or action in calm measured manner. As an example when asked a question we fully know the answer for, we can respond without thought or stress as well as continue on to the limits of our knowledge or abilities. In this mode we are flexible and effortless in our delivery as well as confident. However a reaction is a rushed process or action due to a sudden need or urgencyâ&#x20AC;Ś this is due to an unknown input that is not fully understood. This causes temporary paralysis in our ability to process and formulate a reaction. Again using the example of conversation, when someone asks us something we do not fully know, we stop and think, then attempt to form an answer to it. The hesitation and the unsurity add to discomfort or stress, which in turn releases adrenaline and causes more labored action or thought as well as diminishing physical action. We become less flexible and capable of properly dealing with the situation. Just knowing the difference of these two definitions in relation to our personal protection is Vital. But when we train all possibilities with a single response, it is learned faster, more completely and more sure to be used as well as successful.

Top Ten #6 GB-20, is in the hollow space on the back of the neck between the ster nocleidomastoid muscle and the Trapezius. Two finger widths down from the edge of the skull and in this space runs the Lesser Occipital Nerve that can be struck in two directional angles for different results. This will cause a loss of motor function and varying levels of consciousness, depending on the severity of the blow.

Kyusho One of the effectual angles is striking up and in toward the center of the Skull at a 45 degree angle. This will cause a loss of motor function and varying levels of consciousness, depending on the severity of the blow. But there are more important details we should be aware of and use to our advantage; this being the way the body reflexively reacts to the angled strike. When struck up and in as described, the body will tense the body (Especially the leg muscles) as it lifts the recipient due to the withdrawal reflex. This will pull the arms up and away as loosing functional muscle control also occurs. Struck well enough the body will completely lift from the ground as it falls toward the opposite side of the strike. The individual should experience a white flash as they loose conscious control as well as physical function. Unconsciousness will be rapid in this type of application, however the possibility exists where the falling action (actually hitting the ground), can trigger a nerve impulse that will awaken them. At this point they may not have physical motor control or it will be severely inhibited. And without proper revival application, they will most likely suffer from a severe headache that can last for varied lengths of time depending on the severity of the blow. Striking down and in toward the opposite foot will again cause varying degrees of consciousness, body collapse and a feeling of electrical shock running through the body. With this angle of strike the entire body will loose muscular control and will cause the whole body to collapse. The collapse will be more prominent and rapid on the struck side, but only by a spilt second. This will cause the individual to fall toward that struck side. Unconsciousness will come on slower but be to a deeper level that will not self revive on hitting the floor. The recipient will not get a white flash as mentioned for the up and in strike, but rather everything will go dark as temporary blindness occurs, (this can be remedied immediately or left alone it will return on it's own in time). Also Nausea can be the residual affect as this angle of attack seems to agitate the autonomic nervous system (Automatic life functions such as digestion, circulation, respiration, etc). Again all depends on the force used and the focus on the nerve point.

Kyusho To affect this target in either direction the arm on the targeted side also must be down to open the area. If the arm is up on that side the Sternocleidomastoid and Trapezius muscles will bunch up and the nerve will be recessed beyond reach. If lifted high enough the shoulder itself can also block the target affectively. By having the arm down it will also stretch the nerve to make it far more vulnerable as well. Since the nerve is laying between these two muscle groups the strike must either penetrate the density of these muscles or be focused between them. This is possible with many weapons such as a forearm, elbow or with heavy hand strikes. A forearm strike either with the radial bone (thumb side), or the Ulna bone (Small finger side), accuracy is not as demanding, however the angle is more a sensitive issue. Striking the up and in angle will be hampered by the shoulder even if in the down position. This will be especially difficult with an opponent that is taller than you, even if a slight difference. However striking downward will be far easier and affective with either side of this weapon, especially if you hit with a heavy stretching type action that will collapse the entire body and cause altered consciousness. Finer focusing between the both muscle groups will yield a maximum result and affect, as the nerve itself is more directly accessed. This can be accomplished using the index finger edge of the hand at the first knuckle, or the heel of the palm on the small finger side of the hand. The ridge of the hand can be deployed from a frontal or side position whereas the heel of the palm would be from a side to rearward position. Even with these more refined strikes the upward angle can many times be hard to land properly whereas the downward angle far easier and actually far more incapacitating. Even a smaller (provide the attack is landed properly), weaker individual can attain great affects, as it is not based on strength. This target will be accessible from a push, grab, strike and if position is used even a kick from the attacker. Now the elbow was also mentioned so we need to cover the possibilities as well as the constraints of this weapon. The shoulder and or arm must again be down, whether they have it already there or somehow you have pulled or pushed it down. You could even pull down the head to stretched the neck, muscles and the nerve to be targeted so that a dropping elbow can be used. Provided you can correctly target the nerve with the bony prominence of the elbow as opposed to the back of the upper arm, this is the most devastating of all the possible weapons. To get this

position the opponents arm can be pulled down, their shoulder even if by the shirt or coat, and even with the hair (if they have enough to grab). The newer styles of hooded sweatshirts and baseball caps are excellent to quickly pull and expose this â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vital Pointâ&#x20AC;?. Just remember the downward angle will cause the body to drop uncontrollably and cause a loss of consciousness, vision and physical control. The recovery can take several minutes, in which time the assailant will be weak, blinded, confused and incapable of motor function. Unconsciousness will take even longer to recover from as this direction also causes a loss of blood pressure. This can leave the recipient nauseous, dizzy; have cold sweats and reoccurrence of unconsciousness. In short they are going to feel severely ill and incapable of clear though or reaction. This will act as a deterrent to further attack from the recipient of this Kyusho target. Working with the targets rather than a specific technique will allow so much more flexibility and possibility. The only concern is hitting it in an advantages way as opposed to hoping the attacker does indeed attack in a specific way you have practiced. Another benefit is in the placement and affects they have that will allow the practitioner to correctly control or position the opponent for a proper application. As an example since an individual will either have their chin tucked (exposing the GB-20 as in this chapter), or if they attempt to pull the head back to protect the GB-20, we can use the ST-9 in the prior chapter to pull the chin down to now expose this target. Even if they tilt their head to one side the other is now exposed. And even if they pull up both shoulders or bring up their hands as a boxer or trained fighter, you can simply kick them in the leg to make them drop their hands temporarily to now gain access. By the conclusion of these top 10 targets there is no way you can not expose or position the opposition to escape a finishing Kyusho application. It is this flexibility, this amount of efficiency and affect over the opponent that is not only empowering, but also easy to useâ&#x20AC;Ś especially under the stress of a real attack.

Top Ten #7 LI-18, Laying on the same level as the Adams Apple, between a space in the muscle strands is this very accessible and versatile point. Just lateral to the ST-9 point mentioned earlier is this branch of the Great Auricular Nerve. Not only does it respond to pressing and striking, but it also can be attacked in three directions all with different

Kyusho results. By applying pressure or a strike straight into the target, we activate the withdrawal reflex as the entire body attempts to pull away from the pain and eminent dysfunction. Manipulating it in an upward and inward 45-degree angle, will initiate the cross body reflex as the body arches up and backward. And angling down and in at a 45 degree angle will cause a physical collapse due to motor dysfunction. But just knowing this information is not all there is to know however. It can also be worked in two manners as well, striking and pressing. When pressing we can utilize these three directions as well as in striking. Pressing upward as mentioned will cause what is called a cross body extensor reflex action where the body extends in an attempt to get away from the perceived danger, the pain and the possibility of damage. This method can be use to release a grip as when activated and the cross body reflex activates, the hand will open and the arm will extend and cause it to release. It does not matter what the grip is on, nor the hand used or any such detail. What matters is if you can reach it and apply this pressure. That is why Kyusho is so versatile, it is not dependent on circumstance, it is simply a matter of reach and application. Pressing this straight into the center of the neck will cause intense pain and force the withdrawal reflex. What is so valuable about enacting the reflexes is that they cannot consciously be ignored, or fought off, they automatically kick in. As the opponent pulls away the body is temporarily weakened, the mind not in control and escape or escalation for the practitioner possible. Now pressing downward and in at a 45-degree angle does not actuate a reflex action as much as it simply inhibits motor function. Motor function is the neurological stimulation from the brain to the muscles to perform any and all their actions. Whether it is standing, stepping, turning or any other action, it is severely decreased in conjunction on the pressure used. It could be as simple as weakening the arm, more intense as the legs cannot function and collapse or even more so as it can dysfunction the entire body (Although not probable with just pressing). This flexibility enables the user to utilize it as long as they can reach it, again not based on the opponent's actions, motion or position. So if close or grappled, held or crowded a simple press can get you the distance and or release to remove the immediate threat.

Kyusho Now we can also strike this target with more dramatic results but also differing results depending on the angle of attack. Striking up and in at a 45 degree angle as example, will cause the opponent to rise and withdraw on the struck side. It will also cause that side arm to rise, as it tenses all the muscles, the opposite will drop and the opposite leg will weaken or buckle, depending on the force of the blow. It is also possible to cause altered state of consciousness, however you may have difficulty in correctly targeting it in this manner, as the shoulder is many times blocking this trajectory. Striking straight in (this is the classic Karate or Judo Chop) has a more debilitating affect as the limbs extend and the body then looses much functionality. This will cause the legs to buckle and drop the opponent rather quickly as well. This angle will also cause more severe effect on the conscious level of the recipient and far easier to target, as the shoulder will have less position restriction. The caution that needs mentioning here is that with higher levels of force it is also possible to seriously damage the vertebrae of the neck. For women against a male assailant it is not typically a problem, but male-to-male, the legal ramifications of this defensive action, could be more of an issue. The best and most dysfunctional manner of striking this great target is down and in at a 45 degree angle. Striking it down toward the center of the chest will cause the body to collapse from lack of muscle control, much like the LI-17 (Transverse cervical Nerve). This angle also affects the level of consciousness the most, but without the restrictions or problems of the other two angles mentioned above. This will instantly drop the opponent and weaken the entire body and easy to target accurately. In all of the above workings of this target, if the attacked side arm is down, you will have greater affect. That is due to the stretch on the underlying nerve, the more exposed target and less skin and muscle protecting it. If the arm on that side (or more accurately the shoulder) is raised, the muscle becomes denser as it contracts in the action. It will also cause the skin to bunch up over the area as it offers even more insulation from the blow. Another major benefit to this target is that it can easily be reached from front, rear and side. So if you are attacked straight on, or get to the side, or better yet get behind the opponent, you can still utilize this point. From a frontal position the ridge of the hand, outer edge of the hand, the forearm or elbow can all be used effectively. From the side a knuckle punch, forearm, heel bone of the palm or elbow can access this target well. And from the rear all of the weapons mentioned are possible. If the occasion calls for a double striking action on both sides of the neck there is also a very important aspect to utilize. That is striking in staggered timing, as the affect will be dramatically better than striking at the same time. This is because the nervous system can better handle the simultaneous sensory input as opposed to a staggered timing. When struck at the same time it is one sensory impulse and then a motor response, but when struck in staggered timing, there is a sensory impulse, followed by an instant motor response, which is blocked, or overwhelmed, by the secondary sensory impulse. The following secondary motor response will also be heightened in degree, as the body was already weakened and not able to handle the loss of motor skills. Add now the possibility of double striking in differing directions, or by applying pressure followed by a strike

or vice versa, you again will magnify the affect and cause far more dysfunction in the recipient.

Scenarios: If you are pushed: • You can press the hand down and strike with either side hand or weapon. • You can grab the push and pull down to cause further stretch and weakening for either side weapon. If grabbed you are grabbed by the shirt: • Lightly touch or rub the grabbing arm or in case of a double grab, lightly touch or rub just one arm as the opposite hand attacks the point. If grabbed you are grabbed by the wrist or arm: • Use the opposite arm to attack either side of the opponent's neck on this target. If grabbed by the shoulder: • Step in and around to apply an attack to the opposite side. If struck with a hooking action: • Attack or stop the incoming attack and strike the opposite side of their neck. If struck with a straight action: • Attack, parry or brush the attack out of the ay as you attack with the opposite hand, inside or outside the attack. If in a tight grab: • You will have a more difficult time striking so applying pressure is the best method. If on the ground: • Again you will have a more difficult time striking so applying pressure is the best method. This target has infinite uses and possibilities which will reveal themselves the more you work with them. But for instant self-protection, striking well will end the situation very quickly.

Top Ten #8 GB-31, located just behind the lateral aspect of the Quadriceps and Hamstring (mid-thigh), this is on a branch of the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous nerve. This must be struck into the thighbone at a 45-degree angle from back to front of the thigh. This will cause extreme pain, paralysis of the leg, weakening of the lower limbs and dizziness. This is a well-known target, yet it is very rarely targeted correctly. Many times we see people shin kicking the leg at this target, which of course hurts, but has little affect especially on a well conditioned or strongly muscled leg. The shin is most often performed in front of the opponent or very rarely at a 45-degree angle. This angle is not the best angle to access the underlying nerve as the muscles protect it, especially when in a strong stance. The Quadriceps group of muscles is very large and extends outward and as a protective barrier against these angled kicks. This is best targeted from the rear and in at a 45 degree angle toward the thigh bone as it gets in between the Quadriceps muscle and the Hamstring group which can protect it from back to front angled attacks. By coming in at a 45 degree there is a

Kyusho separation between these muscle groups that will allow you to strike the nerve into and against the bone causing severely neurological shock to that nerve and the rest of the body, as we will describe more later in this writing. Another key element is that the shin is less likely to be able to penetrate as compared to a knee or fisted strike. The shin will be buffered as it contacts the two surrounding muscle groups and mutes the full impact on the nerve. By using the smaller contact surfaces of fist, elbow or knee, it is a very direct attack that causes severe pain and physical dysfunction. What actually occurs is that the acute force on the nerve alone transfers a rapid sensory overload to the brain, which is read as pain must be in monitored and reacted upon. In this process Motor function (or muscle control and strength), will be stopped. This will cause the leg to collapse as the released tension of the muscle no longer supports the body weight and the individual no longer has function in that leg. This pain is so acute and the rush of sensory overload can be (with more force), enough to cause dizziness and altered states of conscious from the shock to the system. The value of this point beyond the mentioned attributes is that it is a target that is difficult for the opponent to block. Several reasons for this are first many people do not expect the attack as it is out of sight range and they will not see it coming. Another is that the legs are the last limb to react so as the individual sees the attack coming in, by the time the brain monitors the danger and tries to move the leg in protection the time lag is too long compared to the strike. It is also an angle that the human mind does not react to quickly. When something is thrown or coming directly to the front of the body, it reacts very quickly, but to the side it is slower as the right brain controls the left side and vice versa. This means there is a time lag from when the right brain (in this example), sees the attack coming in, transfers the information to the leftbrain and then to the legâ&#x20AC;Ś again way too long. And from a rear 45-degree angle, it is the same issue as just mentioned, but also the range of sight is severely restricted.

Now this angle is difficult to get from a frontal attack, however not as difficult once known and practiced. By learning to slip under the opponents arm with a stepping and ducking action, then pivoting to face the new angle toward the opponent you have a clear path to the Target. Your knee will be readily available as will a punch with more training. However the punch will lack the power and ease of motion that the knee will have. One thing to guard against when using a knee is using the top as the striking surface. This is layered in soft muscle tissue and will buffer the attack. Using the hard and smaller bone structure of the knee cap or other surrounding bone structure will have deeper penetration and affect as the nerve is compressed between the hard surfaces of the knee and thighbone. This will send a more acute and painful sensory message and in turn inhibit far more motor skill and consciousness from neurological shock. Using the elbow from a straight angle of attack by the opponent will take the same slipping and stepping action, but now as opposed to pivoting in toward the individual using a rear outward elbow strike the trajectory will be

easy and effective. Again as cautioned on the knee, make sure that the harder bone structure of the elbow is used as opposed to the softer muscle tissue around it. Do not rule out front kicks for this point, however note that your balance will be harder to adjust and maintain with such a forward attack and slip scenario. You must also work harder to target, as the foot will be far less accurate than the Knee, Elbow or Fisted attack. You will also need to target the ball of the big toe as opposed to the full foot as the same difficulty of muscle protection seen with a shin will be a barrier here as well. For approaching another individual to separate them from an innocent victim during an assault, this target is extremely viable and efficient. By approaching from the rear 45-degree angle you will be mostly out of sight range and the knee will work as a natural extension of your stride. This will collapse that attacked leg as it also causes the arms to open and rise, effectively releasing any grip they may have had on the victim. In all the above scenarios, this will render the opponent incapable of further effective attack.

Kyusho A severe strike here will also cause the hand to spring open, so as to release the grip on any weapon or item they may have been using in the attack. Now if the attacker is straddled over the victim this point can be accessible, but sometimes not. For example if the Attacker is on their knees in straddle and the thigh is perpendicular with the ground, it will be accessible. However if they are on the knees, but sitting back on the haunches, the nerve will not be as viable as the muscles will contort in a way so that they overlap and protect the point. So if a rapist as example is in position and between the legs of their victim and if his thighs are upright (to loosen and remove the garment), this target can be attacked with the back of the heal. But the power of this will be less dysfunctional and a quick secondary move or repositioning to escape needed. After working with this target to assure proper angle and attack method to gain the most results, we can add even more debilitating affects by stretching the nerve and enabling us to control the motion of the opponent. When we strike from back to front and stretch the nerve down

toward the knee, the opponent will collapse immediately. This will take the opponents hands as well out of play as it brings the now unprotected head into clear range and reach, even on a larger opponent. By striking back to front with an upward stretch, the opponent will lift off the ground as arms and legs splay out and away from the torso. This will make the opponent drop backwards after the initial lift as it also releases the grip on a victim or weapon. This point may take some practice to become comfortable with, but it and the weapons you are using with it will enable far better protection overall for youâ&#x20AC;Ś and ones that will be surprising and difficult to oppose.

Top Ten #9 SP-11, in between the Adductor and Sartorius Muscles is a branch of the Anterior Cutaneous Femoral Nerve. Pressing or striking this point straight in toward the Femur (Thigh Bone), will cause dysfunction of leg muscles, nausea, cold sweating of the body and altered level of consciousness.

Kyusho This target is an extremely powerful point as it is not just over the nerve, but also the Femoral Artery and Femoral vein. So it affects not only the nerve system with instantaneous reactions and reflex, but it also can also affect the circulation, possibly inducing a vasovagal syncope. The vasovagal syncope is a sudden drop in a person's blood pressure, which brings about fainting. By compressing this nerve (and Artery) against the thighbone, you are affecting both the somatic nervous system, which controls the voluntary muscle control, as well as the autonomic nervous system, which controls internal functions. This nerve when struck or pressed into the Femur (Thigh Bone), causes dramatic physical dysfunctions like: 1. The targeted leg will experience intense pain and dysfunction. 2. Hip and leg shifts outward as it collapses. 3. Opposite leg looses functionality. 4. Body folds. 5. Physical strength diminishes as the body is collapses and falls away on the targeted side. 6. Arms drop with loss of control. 7. Head comes forward. 8. Causes cognitive thought loss temporarily.

Location This nerve starts at the spine at the Lumbar Vertebrae number three and first travels down the leg at the front of the leg at the inguinal crease. The nerve separates into many branches as the spread down and forward on the inside of the thigh. The SP-11 point is at the halfway point between the inguinal crease and the knee at the space between the Quadriceps and the Sartorius and Adductor muscles of the inner thigh. These targets must be struck to penetrate the heavy muscle structures of the thigh to compress the nerve against the bone (Femur). These muscles on the inside flex very little and are typically in a relaxed state so that they will not withstand the incoming targeting. The best angle of approach and compression must be at a 45 degree angle from front to back as if shooting through the thigh and out to the GB-31 point. The amount of force will not need to be as heavy the outer thigh, as the muscle density is far less, and the gap between them far greater. When struck well the pain is intense and the leg will go into complete dysfunction, which will drop the recipient to the ground preventing escape or escalation in resistance. The expected reflexive action will be that the struck limb will buckle that side Hip and knee outward as the leg collapses due to a complete loss of muscle control. The entire side of the body will also buckle inward causing both arms to drop.

Kyusho Now there are many ways to attack this target and some may even be surprising, but all of them are simple and direct motions as are all the targets we have covered in this publication. This is critical as under stress we loose fine motor skills as well as peripheral vision and other physical functionality. Due to this loss in physical control the target must be easy to utilize with a simple gross motor skill such as a knee action. Another asset with this target is that many people, even highly trained individuals, do not train as much in protecting the legs were this target lies. It is a surprising method that is enhanced under stress they may also be experiencing. Starting with the simplest method, a knee attack in at a 45-degree angle, this single action can completely incapacitate the opponent in a single strike. The power generated by a knee is substantial due to the number, size and natural actions of the muscles making this move. In close range it is also virtually undetectable, until it has landed, because it is below the sight line as well as hidden by the hands actions that will be in motion during a close range attack. As an attacker is grabbing, pushing, striking or just making hand gestures to intimidate or initiate the attack, their focus will not be on the legs for the most part. This is a great opportunity to land this stealthy type action with complete surprise. Another benefit is that the opponent in attack will not be able to move their legs fast enough to see and either withdraw or block such an attack. As they step to approach they must place weight onto the lead leg to then transfer from the rear leg. It is in such an instance that the balance, stability and reaction time for the opponent will be secondary to its intended action. And whereas it does not place the defender in the same limited position, this is a very strong and reliable method. Another simple and even more surprising action is sinking to punch the point directly. The power generated with a knuckle punch into this area will be as devastating as the knee attack to the opponent. This is mainly due to the penetrating ability of the fist over the knee in lieu of the power generated. Because the fist will also be a smaller striking surface, the nerve of the opponent's legs will be less protected by the surrounding muscle tissue. The strike can still pinch the nerves and vascular tissue against the thighbone even without the massive power of the knee. It is more surprising as most people do not see, think or relate to this type of action and are therefore unprepared for it. Granted it would work better for a smaller individual to use on a larger attacker for ease of motion, but it can be

done for any size individual. To envision this more clearly, imagine an attacker grabbing your shirt, pushing at your shoulder, or even swinging at your head with a fist. As the hand approaches you sink low and punch directly into the target. The attacker may have expected a block or a lateral movement, but not dropping straight down and even attacking back. Also understand that once the attack is in motion, the opponent will not be readily able to stop the action or change actions. Their body motions, balance and weight will already be committed and readjustment very difficult at best. So their blocking or countering your action would be very difficult to achieve if even possible. For longer range the target can also be kicked directly into the point with the toe of a shoe with equally devastating results. Again many Martial Artists do not even train to protect low kicks like this let alone an untrained attacker. By attacking across the body with a straight low front kick action, again there is a great amount of power that can be generated. Now it will take more training to target this well with a kick as they are less dexterous that the hands or knee, but for those that have it will be extremely effective. One word of caution, in some countries and provinces a kick with a shoe (called a shod foot), are considered illegal weapons. So make sure of the laws in your areaâ&#x20AC;Ś funny time we live in, but better to be protected with information than to be pleading nonknowledge, for protection. The last scenario we will be looking at in this publication, but not limited to, is using this target from the ground. Whether it is a ground fighting situation or if you are knocked, pushed or have fallen, this target has many uses or opportunities. If for example you were on the ground and the opponent is approaching to forward a further attack, this point can easily be kicked, or even punched in this position. Or if you are grappling on the ground with the opponent there may be opportunity to knee, kick, punch or even drop the weight of an elbow or heel into this vital target. Again defence with Kyusho is not reliant on technique, just the availability of specific targets. If it were only one available target it would not be as beneficial to study, but when there are targets such as this all over the human body, there will always be one such as this one, to easily access. And where the simplicity of attack in singular actions as opposed to more complex transitional actions or fine motor skill actions, even under real attack, stress and it's limitations you will be able to use Kyusho far easier and more effectively!

Kyusho Top Ten #10 Mental Nerve is a very special target point that responds to all three stimuli, (hit, rub, press) located just under the corner of the mouth and in-between the lower edge of teeth and base of the jaw. There is a hole in the bone called a Foramen, where the Mental Nerve exits. They are on both sides of the jaw and reachable from either side. Attacking this point down and in toward the neck with a firm pressure or rapid rubbing, will weaken and dysfunction the neck as well as the body muscles. It will cause a withdrawal reflex of the head and can lead to a nauseous state. As it is attacked with more speed and power especially with a striking action, the effects will intensify to dizziness, altered vision and consciousness. The mental nerve is a somatic, (sensory) nerve that includes the special fibers that help keep the body assimilated with its surroundings, such as those involved in touch. Sensory Nerves send messages from the muscles back to the spinal cord and the brain. These sensors help identify if something is sharp, rough, or smooth, hot or cold, standing still or in motion, in short it is all of our senses. Impediment or damage to the Sensory Nerves results in tingling, numbness, pain, or extreme sensitivity to touch. The somatic nervous system also consists of peripheral fibers that send sensory information to the central nervous system and motor nerves. These fibers project to skeletal muscle, for voluntary muscle control as a main purpose. When we overload the sensory nerves with severe, multiple or varied input, we can affect the Motor Nerves and to varying degrees the Autonomic Nerves as well. So say we send an acute sensory message to the brain such as a hard striking action to this target. This in turn will inhibit motor messages to the most distal limbs first and the reason why the legs will buckle, body arms and neck will weaken. If it is struck harder the brain itself is affected with altered levels of consciousness, affecting autonomic function may also be impaired as well. This could result in difficulty in breathing, loss of blood pressure or even nausea. These reactions will be instantaneous and will also leave the recipient in a state of confusion as the brain is occupied with the more urgent need over cogniscent thought. This can assist the user in a total control over the opponent as the body, mind and therefore spirit to continue will also be severely hampered or stopped completely. This is a very versatile point that yields fast and predictable reactions that once the user is aware of, can affect very easily for common self-protective actions: Striking would be the easiest and most natural action for anyone to react with, it also carries the most effective disabling consequences. Using the natural actions of a hooking arm motion (which is labelled as a gross motor skill) will be the best result under severe stress. Under severe stress the fine motor skills like finger control and more complex physical actions are severely restricted by an adrenaline release. This also restricts hearing and even peripheral vision so that concentration is just on single point of sight. It makes the bigger actions such as running and the mentioned arm actions predominant in urgent life preservation. Since this hooking arm action is what will become natural even under extreme stress, we will look at this as our preferred method. These strikes could be with clench fist (more natural for males) or open handed (more natural for females). The recommended method is the open hand for many reasons. The open hand using the palm to strike down and in on the target will need less accuracy as the area of contact will be broader and conform to the skeletal structure of the opponents chin for proper contact. The fist by comparison would need to be on just a few knuckles so that the harder broad surface of the whole fist would ride more on the raised edges of the jaw and possibly the cheekbone. This would limit the actual nerve compression unless targeted with just a few knuckles (a finer motor skill for correct angulation). There is also greater possibility of missing with a fist as opposed to the entire palm with its larger coverage area.

Kyusho Physical Damage with a fist is also probable, as the hard knuckles will cut the skin of the recipient or possible break the jawbone leading to observable or permanent injury. Now at first thought one would conclude that the attacked deserved the injury and that is what you intended anyway. But taking the societal restrictions in these modern times, even if you are attacked, if the assailant takes you to court and they have injury and you do not, leaves you open to further persecution and unjust punitive judgement. By using the palm, the affects will not only be more efficient and effective for targeting, it also will not cause the physical damage or observable injury to worry about later in court. Another factor you need to be aware of in this modern time is that of appearance to the onlooker! A fisted attack is seen by everyone as just thatâ&#x20AC;Ś an offensive attacking action. It will then be the burden of proof that you were first attacked and in possible threat of life. A palm strike on the other hand could be argued as being an attempt to push away or stop the opponentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attack or approach. This can be augmented with a shout to stop, as that will reflect to onlookers you are trying to stop the attacker as opposed to attacking them. The visual and audible links will form a more ingrained and recognizable image of selfprotection from the onlookers. Size matters too. To use a fisted hooking action would require a same size or smaller opponent as reach and angle is more limited with this method. The elbow would also need to be in an upward and outward position to obtain the correct angle on the target in a down and in trajectory. This is a weak and vulnerable position for the swinging arm as well as the exposed body. This is especially not recommended for untrained individuals. As the arm is lifted it also weakens the further away from the body it arcs and the full potential power will not be readily available for the strike either. By contrast using the palm will keep the defenders elbow down and in for more security (as less stretched body mass is exposed), as it also puts more muscles and weight into the action. This in turn will increase the power of the move so that a greater delivery of force can be

utilized by a smaller practitioner. As a further benefit the palm strike can be deployed from inside or outside the opponents arms due to the smaller arc of the action, and exactly where the defender would be with a larger assailant. One thing to note is that both are worthy of practice as one never knows what the circumstance or opponents position of attack will be. It is also worth mentioning that using the arm distal to the attacking action will be easier as the attacking action itself is not in the way of your defensive action. So if they grab or push your left side, your right hand will be free and have an unobstructed path to the target. Also if grabbed by one arm then the opposite side will be free to forward this application, but if both arms are grabbed then using a leg point such as SP11 included in this compilation would be accessible to break free of the grip prior to using this target. For escape it is also a very valuable point, as simple pressure will cause pain and physical weakening of the opponent. It will turn the attacker away from you so escape may be possible or also prior points in further defensive actions could be employed. Pressing it will also cause the recipient to have a withdrawal reflex possibly giving you the room for escape as well. It is suggested for pressure though to use a hard bony surface such as a single knuckle. The pain level will be dramatically increased as will the withdrawal and weakening of the opponent. As has been mentioned many times in this compilation, the versatility comes not from a specific technique or complex actions, but rather just the ability to access each target. Knowing one target is good, but knowing many in different parts of the body will only increase the versatility, adaptability and compound the affects. Using multiple points as they become accessible will also compound the affects and increase your efficiency and ability to escape, manoeuvre or incapacitate the opponent or attacker. So train to see these targets in all situations, train to access them correctly and train in the most simple applications as it will insure far greater result, consistency and personal safety, even in stressful times.

T ime is a commodity that I have spent both wisely and poorly, my Karma a result of time spent. „You are your friends“ With retrospect, this saying holds true for me. When I was young and naive, so were most of my friends and we did the stupidest things together. I am not proud of some things that I did, and here is the crazy thing about them all… Thanks to their consequences, I am who and where I am today and after nearly 56 years on the planet I can look back and say Thank you life! Some of my friends were not so lucky and with similar circumstances they have ended up unhappy, in denial or dead… or worst case, all three. This is where Martial Arts and Martial Sport have been my rock, my salvation. When my life has been in crisis and chaos, I have had something positive to fall back on. I learnt this lesson early…

was ten years old when my parents separated, Mum took my sister, Rachel, and I to the next village, into a cheap rented house behind and over a butcher shop. When I needed to clear my head, I would shut myself in the little room under the stairs and box, skip and train away the negativity around me. I had a homemade speedball, old metal weights from the butchers scales, and I would literally sweat it out…the beginning of a healthy habit. My Martial training continued in the village, somewhere maybe a little unexpected - the cub scouts… In the 1970’s village parents were glad of anything that gave children something constructive to do. The Cubs had a distinct hierarchy or rank. You were either a normal cub (foot soldier) or you became a leader a „Sixer“ the Captain in charge of six boys or the „Seconder“ Sergeant of the six. It was very military based, rough and tumble and discipline was very physical. We were literally slapped into line, and we learnt, albeit roughly, in my opinion necessary, human values, especially our behaviour and to honour and respect our elders.

Every training began with the Cub Scout Promise: I promise that I will do my best. To do my duty to God and to the Queen. To help other people and to keep the Cub Scout Law. Cub Scout Law: Cub Scouts always do their best, think of others before themselves and do a good turn every day. Cub Scout Motto: Be Prepared. I think any martial artist can relate to these… Good values to live by and I think in my heart I’m still a scout! Ten miles away, in the next town, was a boxing club and my first experience of a real Gym. I was twelve and I still remember the buzz I got when I went in. The initiation was to do 3 pull-ups, then depending on how much fight the trainer saw in you was rejection - come back when you are stronger, or the acceptance to train there. After a degree of consistency, you got the chance to spar, and thats what separated the men from the boys, so to speak - fighting spirit. I loved it. In my village was also a good amateur boxer, Pete, and Fridays before youth club we would box our heads off in the front room.

WCI International This training stood me in good stead for my school years, despite being small, bullying was not really an issue, I had developed my confidence enough to be left alone…mostly… I could look after myself, and when somebody tried it on with me, even if I lost, it came at a price, and I earned some respect. I mention my beginnings to give you a feeling from where I come from, a different age, and martial arts were not as commercial, abundant or as accessible as they are today. In !990 I started my adult training, in Boxing and Kickboxing, and in 1999 Wing Chun and then Escrima and these have been and continue to be my passion. My life has been led by passion in just about everything that I do. I learned early that to do a job I didn’t like killed my soul, just living for the shift to end or the weekend. I am lucky, I have had a few jobs since learning this lesson, the last job I had that I didn’t like I was 18… When you spend time doing things you enjoy, whether it be manual work, laying bricks, hod-carrying, serving food, cleaning, or more white collar, administrative office work, selling, organising or teaching English, it really doesn’t matter, when you love what you do, you aren’t really working… And I have done all of the above… Bruce Lee is supposed to have said - "To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities.“ This is how I/ we came to be earning a living, through my passion for Wing Chun and Escrima. What began as a heavily subsidised hobby is now my/ our lives, surrounded by people who we want to be around, we are truly blessed. We have made our luck through a lot of hard work and that martial value again - fighting spirit - persistence, never giving up, ever.

Who is this WE? - I have found someone who loves and supports me despite my quirks habits and foibles. Someone who helps to channel my energy in the right directions - questioning some of my decisions, and on the whole, resulting in better solutionsâ&#x20AC;Ś My friend, lover, partner and wife of over 25 years, Kathrin. Together we have built a Martial Arts school that has grown generically, by word of mouth, practically on recommendation only. This has been due to our childrens training, that eleven years ago was just three children and two trainers in a rented room in a physiotherapy practice. Now the dream has grown to our own purpose built school, exactly as we envisioned it, from our thoughts to paper into reality, our perfect school - well almostâ&#x20AC;Ś ;-) Like the cub scouts we have a Kung Fu promise, the children and I say it every training - our own Kids Kodex: I work daily to become fitter, stronger and more intelligent! I am fit, strong and intelligent, so I can protect myself and others! I am friendly and polite, I always say please and thank you. I use my head before I use my Kung-Fu! We keep to this Kodex. We behave ourselves properly. We do Kung-Fu!

I have said this Kodex at least twelve times per week for the past 11 years and I am sure this has helped us all to grow too. What were young children have become young adults in our Teenager trainings, the emphasis on Wing Chun Kung Fu, age and gender related self defence. As they develop so have their Kung-Fu skills, so that when they then join the adult classes they are pleasantly surprised by how much they already know, and how cool it is to share their knowledge with adult students. My best friend and Wing Chun Master - Andrew Cameron, has helped me grow in dimensions that I, sixteen years ago would have thought impossible. He has taken me out of my comfort zone so oftenâ&#x20AC;Ś and each time I have grown, the most challenging being in 2013, a five week trek through the Arctic. 600 kilometres on foot, sleeping in a tent on ice and snow in subzero temperatures to the Magnetic North Pole. Probably the harshest environment on the planet and when you have done something like that with someone, then you really get to know them!

WCI International Master Andrew has helped all of his Wing Chun International Instructors by pressuring us to get out of our comfort zones. Putting even the most shy in front of a camera and making us speak - saying something, anything and as Master Andrew says „If a job is WORTH doing, it’s worth doing badly!“ … with all martial Arts… Intent is everything! I used the same technique to write a childrens book about the Arctic and my experiences including some of my life lessons and Martial values. I told people all about it, created tremendous external pressure, even selling the book before it was printed! It worked, I forced myself to channel every free minute of my day into writing and finishing the book, working in my breaks, in the car, in bed everywhere, and a Mum from one of my students is an artist, Beate Bilkenroth, so the book was also illustrated… all in under three months. ( in English - Polar Bear Poo and in German and in print Aki & Nibis Polarabenteuer) Creative energy is addictive and reproduced in my Wing Chun Training, part of this unique to Wing Chun International is „The Matrix System“ the understanding and knowledge behind this training system and methods, always evolving, changing and challenging.

WCI International My warrior role models are now numerous, from all walks of life and I try to emulate some of their qualities. I call it cherry picking - and finding what works best for me. When there is something for my students, sharing and lettting them find out if it is right for them too, the fundamental question being - How does it feel? In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. An Art that seeks effectiveness to arrest a person, always looking to nullify from the start the opponent’s ability to attack, through a complete arsenal of techniques with empty hands and weapons, and a whole structure of arrests with ropes and sticks to facilitate the actions of the other companions. Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attackerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. A look into the future When I talk to my students and people outside my school who follow our career, l am asked again and again wher e we ar e heading. Attentive r eaders know that one of my biggest endeavours is to introduce and maintain structure, which should secure the survival and growth of the art. In this article though, I would like to go a bit more into detail and inspire others from the martial arts scene to think ahead and to secure their art.

Exams: Ever since the famous Shaolin monasteries exams have been used to test the level of students and to ensure the quality of the art. Up to this day, how else could it be, exams are relevant for, in my position, they present an opportunity to recognise a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s potential during his education and to act accordingly. A long time ago, when the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER consisted of only one school, it was I who defined the educational programme up to the black belt and who put it down on paper. After many years of

experience, this educational concept has been improved and has been developed into what we require from the student today. And in future we are going to improve it even more. This year, we are adding further aspects to the education up to the black belt, such as for example simple and predefined application exercises, which should help the student to achieve efficient self-defence more quickly and to make sure that the black belt is a reliable degree.

Teaching: Teaching has also been developed at my school over the years and is more efficient than ever. Everything, from the warm-up to the theoretical part at the end of each lesson, has its meaning and purpose and makes the training the valuable teaching that it is today. In future, in all probability there is going to be very little change in the teaching per se, as it is, as I have already mentioned, already very refined. However, my instructors and I are working intensely on supporting each instructor even more by means of tools such as lists or technical devices in order to professionalize the management of each branch. Whereas in the past a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s level used to be recorded in dozens of heavy books, today we have access to moder n technology and computers, which allow us to run our schools more efficiently and, perhaps, to even provide each student with a platform, on which he or she can log in to exchange thoughts with other students and on which he or she can assess his or her progress.

Shaolin Masters: My team has been organising the Shaolin Masters tournament for over 20 years now. At the beginning it was a mere tournament for children, which has developed into a fullfledged event with adult, Lei Tai and now also push-hands categories. Especially the latter should bring us, even more than Lei Tai, closer to reality, and thus reduce any possibilities of injuries to a minimum. With this category, we have not only fulfilled one of my sifuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes, but we are also going to establish an unprecedented

category. As a matter of fact, we have long since had electronic support due to our proven tournament software. Again, concerning the tour nament, we are intending to implement more efficient processes and referee courses. And who knows, whether we can also make these successes, together with everything else, digitally accessible for the student? In any case, in comparison to other schools and styles, the Shaolin Masters has great potential and is an important priority in our plans.

Mega Event: Initially, my students organised this event in an effort to celebrate my birthday. Now the MEGA event, which is highlighted in each studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s calendar, has developed into a big gala evening. In a recent development, we are not just talking about one evening. We have extended this particular Saturday into the afternoon by organising instructive seminars. Before the big evening starts, the participants have the opportunity to get to know our art better at several small seminars. In future, it is not only our own instructors who are going to enrich the seminars in the after noon, but also external masters who are invited as VIPs to the Gala dinner. As of yet, I do not want to predict precisely how the MEGA event is going to develop exactly. There are, however, many ideas and plans and if we implement only half of them, the MEGA event is going to develop into a real Kung Fu Expo.

World Kuoshu Federation: Today, international relationships in the traditional martial arts are more important than ever. Especially in a field that is based on physical training, it is important that one meets up in person to exchange ideas on a regular basis. My instructors and I try to take part in international events of high quality in order to demonstrate our Kung Fu to the world and to make new friends. My sifu once said: “There is no use being the greatest and strongest, if nobody wants to have anything to do with you.” With this in mind, again and again we try to share our success with the community and to support our Kung Fu brothers by participating in events. And who knows, those numerous institutions and schools, with which our structure is popular, are going to adopt this very structure one day.

Assistant instructor education and training: A strong basis is important for the survival of an art like ours, so is to give the student the possibility of becoming a solid member of the senior instructor team. Ever since we have always trained particularly eager students to become an instructor. With the latest adjustments to the educational programme we have taken one step, which makes it possible for the student to get an excellent education. At the beginning, I was the only one who could make a living from the business of the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER. Today, there are already the first students who also teach full-time. And this should be possible for every student. With the new educational programme the student first is a candidate for assistant instructor, then assistant instructor, then instructor, and finally senior instructor. Thus, we enable people to fulfil their dream job or vocation and at the same time we bring our art forward and strengthen it. To summarise, there is one thing to be emphasised in particular: THE KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER is already one of the most successful schools in the martial arts scene or the biggest school in Switzerland as regards the traditional martial arts, respectively. And yet, as we can see from our projects and plans, we consider ourselves to be still at the beginning. It might very well be that my generation won’t see it any more. But by means of our students, who are constantly growing in their numbers, and a team of senior instructors who is excellently educated, I am convinced that the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER has the potential to become one of the biggest martial arts schools in the world.

Jeet Kune Do The Peace-Loving Warrior Once the word warrior is mentioned, for too many people it means war and violence. In common thought, the warrior is equated with death and violence. They just wish to win wars in order to restore peace and harmony between the two peoples engaged in conflict. This will therefore be beneficial for both sides, because sooner a conflict ends, less death and damage there will be. The warriors only follow the orders of governments and manage conflicts to spare as many people as possible. Their top priority is the lives of all people. The warrior systematically spares the civilians as well as the warriors of the opposing camp. Unfortunately, nowadays these values are being forgotten and put aside in favor of the promotion of violence, murder and the commission of immeasurable acts of barbarism.

This new image of the warrior is totally truncated. We m a k e a h u g e m i s t a k e b y t a k i n g t h e v a l u e s transmitted by terrorists who are anything but warriors. Because killing civilians or unarmed people is in no way glorious. A warrior has ancestral values of respect and of seeking and maintaining peace. So a terrorist only wants people dead because he loves nothing and no one. Terrorists are just psychopathic murderers without faith or law and without any respect for anyone. They can in no way be classified and considered as warriors because a warrior respects values and will never kill for pleasure. When a warrior takes a life, it is just to protect himself or the people around him.

This peace so precious in all modern societies which respect each other. Indeed, so-called modern societies try by all means to maintain peace in their own country but often also in the whole world so as not to return to times when it was impossible to travel or leave home without risking his life. Back to those old days, people faced tremendous insecurity on a daily basis. For decades, the warriors of many countries have done their maximum to maintain peace in the world to live in harmony with all peoples. This very fragile peace is often undermined by different kinds of extremists who advocate freely violence and murder. Their only values come down to the hatred of the peoples of the whole world and to sow death wherever they go. These kinds of extremists are in no way comparable to warriors but only to cowards who kill weak and unarmed people. Because when these extremists are faced with real warriors, they run away or hide, begging for mercy from the warriors who catch them. But they who never show any mercy act like cowards all the time. Unfortunately, more and more people think that the warrior model is one of those extremists who kill for pleasure and taking lives becomes a game like electronic war games. This model is totally truncated and in no way represents the values of true warriors. These warriors who sacrifice their lives to protect (and defend) people and homeland. This does not mean, however, that these warriors wish to exterminate all the opposing locals or the warriors of that same country. On the contrary, the true warrior protects and kills only as an absolute last resort. Death is always difficult to give and does not come with joy and euphoria. Any warrior who has killed is subject to post-conflict psychological trauma.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. Gracie Fundamentals is our beginner program for adults. In this program, you will learn the 36 core techniques of Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in an safe and cooperative environment. Each one-hour lesson addresses one standing and one ground self-defense technique. You can start the program at any time, without previous experience and, since safety is our number one concern, there is no competitive sparring in this program. Upon successful completion of the Gracie Fundamentals program you will earn your Gracie JiuJitsu Blue Belt which will qualify you for advancement into the Gracie Advanced program. Although Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of over 600 techniques, studies of real fights conducted by members of the Gracie Family have shown that 36 techniques have been used more often and with greater success than all the other techniques combined.
