The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. We will start with the basic hooking, the “Regatón” to our opponent’s “Burra”, the way of training them, as well as some variants and applications, and their cons. We will also see hooks with the tip and some variants, the “Volcadas de Garrote” or "Envolcadas" and their cons, hooking from below, finishing with “Zapatas” or “Trabas” (takedowns), and some hooks from the outside with "Pinzas" and "Majadas" with great effectiveness in combat. We could not resist including some hooks with change of hand since they are our favorites in combat, despite their difficulty.

fter 32 years publishing our magazine, first Gutemberg style, then digital and in several languages, now mature, like fallen from a tree, there it comes a long cherished dream: The edition in Russian language. Russia is the East of the West; neither Europe nor America can be historically understood without Russia and vice versa. Overcome the policy of blocks and the fall of the Berlin Wall, in the post-modern era, Russia occupies an indispensable place in the rotors that move the world. Budo International had to be in Russia, and curiously enough, the idea has been at last materialized in a beautiful reality from the hand of the same person with whom the project was first discussed, my friend Master Nicolai Smirnov. Thus, from this initial issue and for a period of time on a monthly basis (editions in European languages are fortnightly), we will publish the new edition in Russian, generously fed with the international articles that characterize us, as the global media we are, and that also illustrate the editions in English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian languages. The editions in Chinese, Turkish and Japanese languages are made with different content and different periodicities. But in addition to such international content - we live in a globalized world! -, as we do in the other editions, there will be an indeterminate number of local pages, with the most flowery of the immense and valuable Russian martial world. Some of these local information will even be presented in the specific languages of some of the former Soviet republics, and, who knows, little by little, they could become the seed of future editions in those languages. Russian is spoken in many countries in the area of influence of the former U.S.S.R. that of course they extend by enormous and wide-ranging zones of the planet. market from scratch, as we already have almost 10,000 readers in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and other areas of the Russian linguistic sphere, who generously followed our magazines in their editions in other languages. And so it goes on... More than ten languages and close to a million readers around the planet! (as of September 7, 2020). It seems as though it was only yesterday that, back in 1988, we set off in our journey, and although I chose "Budo International Publishing Co." from the beginning as the name of the company, hardly could I suspect on that moment the huge dimension that this project would be gaining over time. I mean over time… and a lot of hard work! For nothing comes out of nothing, but from the effort, perseverance and dedication ... and, of course, the magnanimity of the readers who have accompanied us and rewarded us with their acquiescence and generosity, ignoring so many times our many mistakes, and above all appreciating our best intention, which is no other than that of giving the Martial world a dimension without borders, glossing the best of the classical and modern arts of the disciplinary field, wherever and whenever news or novelty occurs. Thus we were the first European magazine to put the UFC and the Gracie revolution on the cover (for which we were greatly criticized!), and also to dedicate our efforts to disseminate and recover the ancestral Martial Arts and styles from all over the planet. We have recorded and translated more than 1,000 instructional videos into several languages, and every month we make new audiovisual materials available to

Before our productions, the martial world and its videos were something lacking quality, to say the least. The idea of making productions with the same professional quality comparable to other sectors, was a real find. It’s clear ... if you want to be treated with respect, respect yourself! A magazine made with the presentation and editorial photographic qualities more typical of other sectors (probably more popular, but certainly less important than our beloved Martial world) was a decision that has been awarded by readers over time, fed up with so much lack of distinction, elegance, and why not say it, of the most elemental good taste. Indeed, that was something rare in our field before Budo International, and by initiating an ascent of standards, allowed us to force a new paradigm, one that has only brought positive evolution to our environment; a process of which we are aware and at the same time fills us with pride.

There is thus a before and after of our magazine within the sector, and even our most recalcitrant enemies have grudgingly recognized this achievement. But enough of praising ourselves, that's bad form! Today is a day of celebration, so allow me these poetic licenses; deep down we are those same humble spokesmen as always, simple amplifiers of the voices of others; the Masters, who are the important ones, Martial Masters, styles and cultures that have behind themselves a history and a usefulness that touches, in one way or another, the soul of so many students and practitioners. ¡Now and always, we have a duty to you, my friends! Traditional Arts GARROTE CANARIO - CANARY STICK FIGHTING SUPERIOR TECHNIQUES EMBUCHADOS, ENGANCHES AND CONS The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote” or “Garrote Canario”, is a Martial Art and a folk sport practiced throughout the Canary Islands. It's hundreds of years old, and although the first written testimonies dating back to 1400 A.D., there is much earlier archaeological evidence. Originally practiced by the ancient Canarians, generically known as Guanches, the “Garrote Canario” was transmitted from parents to children throughout centuries, and it has come down to us thanks to the more than 40 years of research and rescue work carried out by the Grand Master and researcher Jorge Domínguez. This martial and cultural heritage is today spread by the Canary Stick Fighting Federation (Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario FLGC), an official entity recognized by the Government of the Canary Islands, for the organization, dissemination and representation of this autochthonous form of combat.

Probably, it is due to its extensive participation in international events such as the Spanish Open of the World Amateur Martial Arts International (WAMAI SPANISH OPEN ), where in addition to several top positions in Self-Defense, Forms with Weapons and Musical Forms with Weapons, the Garrote Combat Modality is being developed directly between WAMAI and the Canary Stick Fighting Federation (Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario - FLGC), a competition open to all styles and modalities that use clubs, lances, sticks, etc. Or perhaps to the Grand Master Jose Luis Montes' Hall of Honor, in Barcelona, where the most outstanding Masters of Garrote and Tolete as well as those of the so-called “Lucha del Garrote Adaptada” (that is, the Garrote Fighting Adapted to People with Disabilities), have received international recognition. We must also highlight the World Martial Arts Federation that organizes the Word Martial Arts Championship in Germany and Korea, led by Grandmaster Doctor Lee Keun Tae, where the Canario Garrote has obtained the first positions in Weapon Techniques each time it has participated. And it must be just as well stressed out, and very especially, the BUDO MASTERS in Rome, organized by Budo International and Grand Master Paolo Cangelosi, an event with a huge impact on the world of Martial Arts and combat sports, which has served to make the Canarian Garrote internationally known.

The Canarian "Tolete", which has approximately the length of an arm, is similar to a truncheon or police defense, but with central grip at a single hand, which has military, sports and police aspects. The Garrote Fighting Adapted to people with mental, physical and mental disabilities is one of the federative star programs, developed by Instructor Nada Donate, who teaches more than 100 people with disabilities in various islands of the archipelago. Within the Canarian Garrote Fighting Federation, we work out with four specialties, each with different aspects: sports, martial, police, folk, cultural or therapeutic. “La Mano Canaria” (Canarian Hand), are Garrote, Wrestling and Tolete, techniques applied to empty hand fighting for personal defense. This is a traditional resource, since, according to the oral tradition, “old garrotistas (garrote practitioners) were good at the trompada” (punching); after all, the garrote is but an extension of the fist. The Mano Canaria is currently in great demand, especially in the so-called Canarian Defense of Women or ÁTTANATDÁ, a word that in Guanche means woman with great determination. And it includes a whole technical arsenal applicable in these times. And finally, the Garrote wrestling technique that uses an implement that oscillates between the ground and the height of the chest or a

Traditional Arts quarter above the head of the garrotist, although in some areas, such as the Caldera de Taburiente in La palma, garrotists can get to use sticks up to about four meters to jump over large differences in height. The garrote was the preferred weapon for the Guanches; it has its origin in the shepherd's staff, for its double use as a work tool for moving through the difficult orography of the islands, and as a weapon. Although Guanche warriors perfected the old work staff, adapting sharp points, stones or maces at the ends and incorporating iron and steel points during the period of conquest and colonization (tips, ferrules, halberds ...) hence the Garrote also receives the names of Lanza, Astia, Asta, Rejada, Chuzo, Pica, Regatón or Lata, although this last name refers to the lengths of the implement. El Garrote Canario fighting system, in adults, is organized in 10 degrees or stars (dan levels). The 1st degree refers to the basic techniques and displacement, the 2nd one covers the complements (feints, “reboleadas”, “majados” and changes of hand); the 3rd to the “enganches” or “embuchados” (hookings); the 4th degree to Combat Techniques and Tactics; the 5th to takedowns, whether executed with the legs or Zapatas. Or also when our Garrote intervenes, in which case we will call them Trabas. The 6th degree includes “Acaimo” hits or spearheads and “Caracoleadas”. The following degrees or stars are Meritorious: the 7th Star is the recognition as a Master and it's granted by the Sabor or Council of Masters. The 8th star is for Masters with International recognition. The 9th star is the Recognition of Grand Master when in addition to being Master of Garrote the holder is also a Master in another Canarian Combat system. The Tenth Degree is a special recognition given to Jorge Domínguez Naranjo as Grand Master, rescuer, diffuser, disseminator of the Garrote and the “Tolete Canario” and founder of the FLGC. Grand Master Domínguez has also developed a teaching method for these modalities, counting on numerous publications. The growing interest in getting to know the Canarian Garrote more closely has led us to present this work where we will see part of the official program of the Federation

corresponding to the third star (3rd Dan), dedicated to the “Enganches” or “Embuchados”, which some Masters of the Earth also called “Envolvido” (wrapped). We refer to this hooking technique when we “wrap” the opposite stick and fix it with one of the ends of our weapon, immobilizing it and striking with the other end, generally tying it to our hip. Although we will see that we will also fix it with “Pinzas” (clips) to our forearm. We will start with the basic hookups and their training ways and later we will see some variants and applications, in the words of the Grand Master Jorge Domínguez, speaking about distance combat strategies: "where we'll be able to work at a wide distance or develop a close-range combat, which is where hooking techniques come in and are effective with all their variants”. To develop this technique, we mustn't anticipate or transmit our intention in advance because doing that we’d be facilitating a counter. In fact, one of my favorite tactics is to “offer the Burra” (she-donkey, the central part of the garrote) so that the inexperienced garrotista throws himself to make a hook and wait for him with a powerful and lethal counterattack. We will show on the DVD some hooking cons and the way of practicing them. We must understand therefore that when we perform an "enganche" or "embuchado", it will be parting from a counter, a defense or a previous attack, but never as a first technique. Even in the simplest case, I first cross, stop or kill the trajectory of the opposing "garrote", and only then I execute the hook. This grip and the frontal position of the body will allow us to make different attacks at the opponent's stick with the aim of disarming, breaking the guard and / or knocking down the opponent. As a curiosity, although it has its explanation and application, when we take the "Punta" with the right hand, we will be in the Right Guard. This position, common in Garrote, Tolete or Lucha Canaria, in the rest of the world and Martial Arts is the Left Guard. With this grip and body position, we can perform hooks inside or outside of the Burra, above or below the opposite stick, or with the Punta or the Regatรณn of our garrote. All these variables allow us to adjust the different hooking techniques to the combat distance, to the long, closed or short guard and to the characteristics of the opponent (height, weight, tactics used ...), as well as to the terrain

where we carry out the combat (tatami, sand, rocks...), the number of opponents, etc. We will start with the hooks with the Regatรณn to the opponent's Burra, which is what is most frequently used, it's a very powerful and expeditious technique; we will also see some cons and the ways of training them. We will also see the hooks with the garrote tip - Punta - and some variant; in this case we will resort to the popular saying "Brains over brawn", since we will use the vacuum and/or the force of the opponent, to execute the technique. In other sections we will see the Garrote "Volcadas" or "Envolcadas", and their cons, a very simple technique, but very effective in the hand-tohand combat. And the hooks from below, where we will almost always finish with Zapatas or Trabas (takedowns). We will also see some hooking on the outside with "Pinzas" and "Majadas" of great effectiveness in combat.

Traditional Arts The techniques are done very slowly so as to capture the details of their performance, and at the end we will see a series of combats where we will be able to observe the making of hooks at a more real pace and with all its range of possibilities. We haven't worked on sports applications, but on martial ones, so we have not used adapted material or "aburis" (rubber sticks) that allow a greater contact without risk. All the garrotes appearing in the images are made of wood, with real weight and size. We want this DVD, where we show some of the most characteristic "Enganches" and their variants, to serve so that both the martial artist or the student has a fair guide for their training sessions, as a complement to the practical work carried out with their instructor or Master, and to that purpose we have included, in addition to the ways to practice and execute them correctly, some training exercises. We have not been able to resist adding also some hooking with a change of hand, despite its certain difficulty, since they are our favorites in combat.

Critical contribution from Martial Artists to Police Agencies By Jesus N. Martinez, M.P.A., B.S. Criminal Justice professor, NYPD supervisor (ret.)

Historically, martial arts and police departments has formed an effective symbiosis in the fight against crime. W ith few exceptions most martial artists were almost always on the side of the law. A good part of the artsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; teachers, grand masters, and experts have been approached or invited by these depar tments to speak or conduct seminars and clinics of their specialties in their police academies. In fact, much of the curriculum taught in police defensive tactics units comes from techniques originating in martial arts. That makes martial arts and the people who make that practice their north a formidable source of information for criminal justice professionals.

POLICE & MA owever, everything changes; everything evolves. It is palpable how the martial arts itself has been transformed. In the case of public servants, as the society advances, the demands and expectations for the professionalism of law enforcement and the improvement of the services they render also become evident. In turn, this translates into the creation of new laws, rules and regulations; and that restrict, or at least modify, the police work needed to be done in each community. To make matters worse, the police agency and its member have never been more accountable than they are today. Anything the officers say or do can now be recorded. Not just the departments, but the officer need to present total transparency and disclosure of its acts. Thus, we reach a point where a curriculum that was taught last year may become obsolete this year. Those laws that we swear to defend now somehow limit us in the practice in policing and we must obey them; this is precisely one of those things that makes us professionals. We must go back to the design and writing room to find solutions to present common problems. Hence, it remains to ask, how can martial artists really and effectively contribute to the police educational bodies in their localities? First of all, it is imperative to establish some fundamental differences between what should be melee fighting techniques, offensive/defensive techniques, military techniques, personal defense techniques for civilians and finally, police defensive techniques.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;A gifted martial arts teacher or student, for example, spends a great part of his/her life training and learning his/her techniques over and over again. Instead, for police tactics instructors it becomes a bit difficult to instill in their students, who are often there against their will and for an extremely short period of time, those same techniques.â&#x20AC;?

POLICE & MA The importance of being able to differentiate one from the other is that the objectives and perhaps also the enemy, are tangentially different. To use an example, for the military the enemy is causal and their goal is inevitably to annihilate him/her while advancing or retreating. In the case of civilians, the enemy is casual and the goal is to get out of a given situation without being badly hurt. However, in the police case, the opponent is not necessarily or always the enemy. And the goal is not always to eliminate him or to get rid of this offender abruptly but, to certain extent apprehend him/her and present him/her before a court of law or refer him/her to a psychiatric hospital. With these modifiers in mind, I believe that those martial artists with the potential to contribute to the design of police defenses curricula must first take into account the limitations and legal parameters of the police departments they plan to benefit. As an example, it occurs to me that in some police systems: In terms of tactics for the patrol person, • Chokeholds are not allowed. That is, unless a police officer can show that his life was decidedly in extreme danger of death. The direct chokeholds that are so common in Judo or BJJ, are definitely banned in most police departments. • "Positional asphyxia" is also not allowed either. That is, sitting, standing, or putting any kind of pressure on the subject's back or chest, or on the lungs, thus preventing free breathing. • Opposed to what we are used to seeing in movies or, perhaps what happened in the past, police officers are not allowed to shoot in the back a criminal who is running away from him and who no longer represents any danger to the officer.

Yet, some martial arts techniques sometimes call for punishment after submission. An aspect that sometimes is overlook by the designer of a syllabus or lesson plan is, on the other hand, how limited the personnel and logistical capabilities are to some police units. That is to say, i.e.: • The duration of the training. Very few commanders can dispense with their officers for an extended period of time. In almost all police units there i s a l w a y s a p e re n n i a l l a c k o f personnel. Which means that the techniques that are taught during the periodic clinics and practices must take this factor into account, shortness of time.

POLICE & MA • The physical space and equipment to be used. There are departments that do not have sufficient physical conditions or equipment for certain training sessions. Please, take into consideration the amount of equipment used on patrol when designing techniques based on ne-waza or grappling. • The audience, who is this course aimed at; let’s see: The prototype of the manly, muscular, policeman that is in constant training is increasingly rare, thing of the past. Today law enforcement officers are less physically intimidating. So, we have more women, members with less physical possibilities, smaller stature. These personnel more and more resemble the general population that they serve than the prototype of earlier times. A gifted martial arts teacher or student, for example, spends a great part of his/her life training and learning his/her techniques over and over again. Instead, for police tactics instructors it becomes a bit difficult to instill in their students, who are often there against their will and for an extremely short period of time, those same techniques; Therefore, I suggest that you, martial artist instructors, choose techniques that can be simple but, practical and effective, legal and, therefore, assimilated by all.

The Hollywood’s influence. Many civilians’ martial artists who want to contribute to the police are inspired by prototypes presented by the entertainment industry. Thus, the result of the product presented to law enforcement tend to be unpragmatic; it is rather far from reality. We sometimes see books, DVDs, or we attend seminars where the material presented is very elegant, very well presented and even suitable for the consumption of police defense instructors, not so for the common patrolman. Unfortunately, police academy managers and instructors typically don't tell these well-meaning martial artists right up front what doesn't work for policing. Perhaps out of fear of hurting these well intended artists’ feelings. So, we see teachings that might work better in a movie or on a television stunt show than on the reality of a patrolman/woman. Finally, to the senseis, instructors, coaches, masters you are still invited to approach your local law enforcement departments and submit syllabuses and lesson plans that continue to contribute to the practical training of police professionals. Just keep in mind that the critical teaching objectives of these teaching approach need to be adjusted to the realities of these agencies.

Okichitaw is an indigenous martial art based on the fighting methods of the warriors of the Assiniboine and Plains Cree Indian nations. However, the current training method is more intended in giving direction and focus to the student through self-challenge and confrontation of own fears and limitations in a controlled environment, while developing physical and mental strength. Okichitaw uses the practitioner's full body mechanics to deliver the maximum amount of impact on the opponent. This action is used in conjunction with one's own body weight to perform aggressive attacks and takedowns. Jumping, rolling, and hopping are used to initiate and end attacks. Due to the variety of techniques and skills, and the strenuous nature of the exercises, Okichitaw demands and generates a high level of athletic capabilities, strength, speed, agility, commitment to technique, and mind alertness. In this first work, Chief George J. Lepine, responsible for adapting the Art to current times, shows us the traditional method of solo training, availing ourselves of what Nature offers us. Trees, soil, water and many other different things that we can find around us and that can help us to train with our "Mokiman" knife.

A Hwarangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Journey By Chief Instructor Alex Krijger

Introduction: Alex Krijger is a 4th Dan Hwa Rang DoÂŽ Instructor of the Netherlands, who holds the title of Susuk Sabum (Chief Instructor). He is the highestranking Hwa Rang Do Instructor in the Netherlands with over 25 years of experience and oversees all the clubs. He is currently a SAP KeyUser for Total Refinery in Vlissingen, leading a project that affects almost the entire To t a l organization and its personnel as well as the managing contractors onsite. He is one of the most dedicated and loyal disciples of Founder, Supreme Grandmaster D r. Joo Bang Lee and Grandmaster Taejoon Lee.

The Beginning: As a child, my parents felt strongly that all children should participate in some form of sports. I did the typical sports activities like gym and your regular athletics. It wasn’t my first choice, but I did what my parents wanted me to do. Soon I discovered that I wasn’t a team player as I did poorly in team sports like soccer and basketball. I began to gravitate more towards individual sports. In my hometown, Vlissingen, one of the main harbors in the Netherlands with only a population of around 40,000 people, there wasn’t a large variety of sport activities. So, when I reached the age of 10, I was able to change the type of sport to my choosing. I became fascinated with the martial arts mainly due to watching the popular TV series with David Carradine, “Kung Fu.” In Vlissingen, like many cities throughout Europe at the time, there were no martial art clubs other than judo and karate. So, my first choice was judo. In hindsight, I cannot say exactly why I chose judo, but the important thing was that I wanted to practice a martial art. It really didn’t matter what it was. At the time, to be able to practice and train in the martial arts, which I always dreamt about was a great experience, learning the falling, the joint locks, the throws and grappling; I was hungry to learn. However, there was something missing. It wasn’t what I expected from watching “Kung Fu”. It was missing the esoteric, philosophical, mystical nature of what I saw and what initially attracted me to the martial arts. Needless to say, I didn’t continue much longer. I am not saying that Judo was bad, but it didn’t provide what I was searching for. Being discouraged, I didn’t train in any martial arts for many years, but there was something inside me, a calling, a desire that I could not ignore. After approximately 4 to 5 years later, I decided to try something different. That was Kyokushin Karate, also known as Mas Oyama karate. It was great training, hard style, fighting with no protection, full contact, and at the end of each training you felt really exhausted, but it gave me a great feeling of strength and confidence. My self-confidence had improved, yet I still felt something was missing. Not being fully satisfied, I also stopped training in Kyuokushin and decided to explore further. With my friends who also trained in different styles, we decided to combine our knowledge of judo, jiujitsu, kyoukushin, and boxing to create our own thing, our own mixed martial art, the first in the Netherlands.

Although it still wasn’t the TV “Kung Fu”, it was good to train with my friends and I continued until I was 21 years of age, 1986, when I had to serve my country for 14 months of military service. It was at this time that I met another soldier who would become my friend for life. And, it was him who introduced me to Hwa Rang Do for the first time. He invited me to come to the Philippines when he was stationed at the Dutch embassy. He told me that he had the perfect martial art for me, as he knew of my quest to find a complete, balanced martial art. My first introduction to Hwa Rang Do® was in 1991 in Manila, Philippines. I only participated 2-3 classes and had a Korean acupressure treatment. It was told to me that the acupressure treatment was part of Hwa Rang Do and that Hwa Rang Do is truly a complete art. I had discovered that Hwa Rang Do is not only a martial art, but also a healing art. They told me a saying, “When you know how to injure your opponent, you also need to know how to cure him.” How beautiful is that? It seemed as though I had found what I was looking for. It was love at first sight; I knew I had to learn this art. When I returned back home to the Netherlands, I made up my mind and made it a goal to learn Hwa Rang Do for myself. I was filled with excitement about this ‘new’ martial art, to learn it, master it, and then to cherish it. It was a perfect fit for me; jumping up and down like a little boy yelling, “Yes! This is for me, me, yes me!” I immediately started to look for a school where I can continue training. It wasn’t easy looking for a place during the pre-internet era. Unfortunately, I discovered that there were no schools in the Netherlands, so I continued to look throughout Europe. I wasn’t giving up. I needed to get in contact with the person in the Philippines who first introduced me to what would become my life’s passion. I tried desperately to contact him by phone, by regular post. It took some doing, but I was finally successful in reaching him and I had so many questions. It was very disappointing to say the least to find out that there were no Hwa Rang Do Schools to be found in Europe and the only way to learn it was to go back to the Philippines or travel to the United States. How was I going to continue learning Hwa Rang Do? That was my first lesson in Hwa Rang Do ‘if you want something bad enough, then you will find a way to get it.’

So, to get what I want, but not aware of what I needed, I arranged an instructor from the Philippines to come to the Netherlands. Did I know what I was doing? Did I do enough research? Was I really prepared? Would I do it all over again? These questions and much more from many different perspectives would follow, and at the same time guide me during my growth in the path of becoming a Hwarang. After much effort, I was finally able to get an instructor to come to the Netherlands. He was a student of one of the students of the Founder of Hwa Rang Do, Supreme Grandmaster Dr. Joo Bang Lee during the formative years in the 1960’s in Seoul, Korea. As my first Hwa Rang Do Instructor, I owe him much gratitude in introducing me to the history, tradition, and values of Hwa Rang Do. I will remember him always.

Why I committed to Hwa Rang Do? After six months of daily intensive physical and mental training, the Philippine Instructor had to return back home to the Philippines. During this time, we were also able to start the first Hwa Rang Do Club in the Netherlands. At first, I was devastated; all the work, the time and effort in bringing him over, my hopes and dreams of mastering Hwa Rang Do, all gone! However, I knew that this situation was not permanent and although it was difficult to deal with at the time, it would become a blessing in disguise. Even though he was leaving, and I only had six months of training, I was committed to continuing the club no matter what. When he was leaving, he said something that I will never forget, “Without me, the club will close within six months.” I suppose he didn’t have much faith in me, but then he didn’t really know me. I was determined to prove him wrong. When I make up my mind to do something, I never give up. Now, after almost three decades Hwa Rang Do is still alive and well in the Netherlands. In the beginning, it felt good to teach and help other students grow in the art that I love, but more importantly I began to see for the first time how Hwa Rang Do can help its practitioners in their personal, private lives. It was truly a complete art, which developed the physical, mental, emotional, and later the spiritual self. However, I knew

that I had a deadline, that my knowledge was limited and I had to find a way to continue my training in Hwa Rang Do or I would not only fail my personal goal, but now also the students, and the prediction of closing the club would come true. “First, you need to know what you want, then you must ask the right questions in order to get the right answers. Once you have the answers, then you must commit to them and never give up until the goal is reached.” I knew what I wanted, but I was asking the wrong questions, searching in the wrong places, trying to make it easier by doing what’s familiar, avoiding the obvious. I needed to go to Los Angeles, I needed to go seek out the source of Hwa Rang Do, the Founder Dr. Joo Bang Lee, Dojoonim (The Owner of the Way). Miraculously, around the same time in 1994, I found out that Dojoonim Dr. Joo Bang Lee and his sons Master Henry Lee (currently Grandmaster Taejoon Lee) and his brother Eric Lee would be performing at the BudoGala in Germany, the largest martial arts demonstration in Europe at that time. This was a dream come true! I did everything I could to make sure I was there. I was so excited at the opportunity to finally meet them, but at the same time, I was filled with anxiety and worried how I would be received. In the largest indoor sports auditorium in Dortmund, I sat quietly, intently among the sold-out seating of 15,000 eager spectators. There were many great performances by world famous martial artists, but all I wanted to see was the Hwa Rang Do family. Finally, it was their turn and with Dojoonim leading them onto the mat with his two proud sons to the loud cheering of the crowd, accompanied by an epic music score, it was awesome, and they didn’t do anything yet. Their demonstration was incredible, and I was beyond impressed. They received the only standing ovation of the night with the crowd chanting, “Zugabe (Encore)!, Zugabe! Zugabe!” After the performance we went backstage and met them for the first time. I was so nervous to meet them that my bad English got progressively worse as I continued speaking with them; it was incomprehensible. When they understood about my experience with Hwa Rang Do in the Philippines, Dojoonim welcomed me like a father and I

finally felt like I was home. And, in that moment I knew that I was being disingenuous and that I needed to do Hwa Rang Do the right way, officially, with his full blessing. I wanted to go to the US as soon as possible, but life, things got in the way, and finally in 1996 I would fly to Los Angeles to train under the direct guidance and supervision of Dojoonim and hopefully with his sons. In honesty, it took me two years before I went to the US because I was being reluctant, reflecting, thinking, doubting whether this is something I really could do, knowing that this time there was really no turning back. It would be the first of many trips I would make to the US, to Dojoonim, to my Hwa Rang Do family. In my first trip to the World Hwa Rang Do Headquarters, I had a long conversation with Dojoonim. He spoke so passionately about Hwa Rang Do and asked me so many questions about the Netherlands that I became overwhelmed with emotions. Dojoonim showed so much interest in me and saw my potential that he took time to sit down with me with such care and thoughtfulness, I was deeply moved. I knew I had made the right choice and I swore to myself that I would never let him down. During the time I spent training at the World Headquarters, I had to relearn everything from the beginning. All that I had learned previously had to be corrected. I realized that this is what it means to learn from the source, that this is the value of purity, and this humbled me like never before. As I was being trained by the Masters and reviewing my techniques, Dojoonim would make time to help me, teaching, correcting me and having me practice it in constant repetition, again, and again, and again, seemingly never ending. I will cherish those moments forever. This is what I needed! Although I knew what I wanted, Dojoonim gave me what I needed. This was essential as I was now truly training to become a Hwa Rang Do Black Sash. Unfortunately, during my first visit to World Headquarters, I only met Grandmaster Taejoon Lee (who was only a master then and now a Kuksanim) once and we didn’t get to train physically, but we spent much time conversing. Afterwards in reflection, I hoped that I was humble enough to listen and had given the correct answers to his questions as I wasn’t used to long

conversations. All I could do was speak from my heart and less with my mind and in looking back, I think that’s what Kuksanim would have wanted. The following approximately 15 years I travelled yearly to World Headquarters in the USA to practice under the guidance of Dojoonim and Kuksanim. I have learned much from Kuksanim, but one thing he has taught me stands out: “First, you need to know what you want, then you must ask the right questions in order to get the right answers. Once you have the answers, then you must commit to them and never give up until the goal is reached.” In 2000, I travelled together with Kuksanim throughout Northern Europe to visit Hwa Rang Do Clubs as well as conduct open seminars, assisting him with his efforts to spread Hwa Rang Do throughout all of Europe, which he started in 1983. During that two-week period, I learned and grew so much just by opening my eyes to see what he did and my ears to listen to what he said. All the ideas, the method, the techniques, that he spent countless hours teaching and speaking were all part of a path, all perfectly designed and synchronized like pieces in a puzzle that fit together creating one beautiful tapestry, which seemed like grains of sand are now fitting together and I am beginning to see its beauty even though it took two decades.

My Hwa Rang Do Club and growth of Hwa Rang Do in the Netherlands: What started as my selfish desire to learn and improve myself for my own ego and vanity, seeking what seemed to be an easier way to acquiring it, has become my life’s work to better others through this beautiful martial discipline of the Hwarang Knights, which I have been fortunate enough to be exposed to. Kuksanim always says, “The longest distance between two points is a short cut.” And surely, in trying to find a short cut, I traveled the longest distance. Opening the first club in 1994 with only a handful of friends and relatives without any intentions of teaching, but only so that I can train and learn for myself, I inherited the club, becoming a teacher overnight. Things always do not work out the way you planned; one of many lessons I have learned in travelling the path to be a Hwarang. After a couple of years, a taekwondo group out of the city Bergen op Zoom contacted me if I was interested to

take over the club because their instructor had left. Of course, I said yes and took over that club as Bergen op Zoom is geographically situated better than Vlissingen. The goal was to start from my hometown, Vlissingen, then spread Hwa Rang Do through the Netherlands and this was an opportunity to realize that goal. After almost 20 years of teaching and managing the Hwa Rang Do Club in the Netherlands and thinking that I was doing a decent job of it, Kuksanim once more shook my world. He has tried many times to show me a better way of running, managing my club, but I was stubborn to change. Of course, I didn’t realize how stubborn I was until Kuksanim brought it to my attention. It all climaxed in 2016 when Kuksanim travelled throughout Europe visiting all the Hwa Rang Do Clubs in a three-month tour. He spent almost two weeks with me and after observing the classes, the instruction, the administration of the club and learning all that he could about how we did things, he gave me an ultimatum to either follow his prescribed methods and standards, which he was implementing to all the clubs in Europe, or shutdown the club. I lasted more than 6 months, but now after almost 20 years the possibility of closing the club was once again a reality. Kuksanim had a completely different vision on how to run and manage a martial art club than what I was familiar with. He made me realize that I was succumbing to my primal fear of change and have grown comfortable with the daily routines and the conditions of my life. He said that without change there can never be growth and growth is change. Furthermore, he stressed the importance that Hwa Rang Do is not a sport or even a martial art, that it is a school of leadership. And, as leaders we must constantly work to find ways to improve, to better the self, others, and the world, and by our action we lead by example. This time, his words hit home as also I was struggling in my private life. I realized that I must change and venture outside my comfort zone. I began to see his vision and started to implement the necessary changes with him always being there to help. Now, we have three clubs: Vlissingen, Bergen op Zoom, and Hoogerheide. It doesn’t seem much, but throughout the years I have had the fortunate opportunity to instruct approximately a thousand students, reaching many more people who are related with those students. With the changes implemented, we are growing stronger and better each day thanks to Kuksanim.

Hwa Rang Do in my life: I have trained in many different martial arts, falling in love with it since childhood. However, I was never able to find a martial art which satisfied me completely until I was introduced to Hwa Rang Do. When I discovered it and met Dojoonim, I knew that I have found my home. The satisfaction I get from the training, practicing, from teaching and helping others, are priceless, it’s me, it’s what I have always wanted. Hwa Rang Do has changed my life and transformed me into a better human being. I am more confident and empowered, but more importantly I can open up and share my vulnerability with others without fear, allowing others to share their personal problems and issues, inviting my council and giving me the opportunity to help them with compassion, empathy, and wisdom from my masters. My students not only ask me for corrections on their techniques, but also seek for life advice; not only do they ask about Hwa Rang Do, but ask for advice in dealing with their wellbeing, their struggles and fears in their daily lives. This has given me immense joy and satisfaction that I am able to help others in facing the hardships of life.

All this and much more has made me realize what I was missing in all the martial arts that I had practiced in the past. A true martial arts instructor is not only someone who teaches you how to fight, or push you to your physical limits; no, a true martial art instructor (master) is a teacher who can show you the way to realize your potentials and to get the most out of life. He shows you the possibilities ahead of you, instills you the courage to seize the opportunities, and the strength to endure the consequences, overcoming the fears and doubts to fully explore life. All aspects of life, always with humility and gratitude to God. I am forever grateful to my Hwa Rang Do Masters who have helped me to realize my full potential, inspiring me with their selfless acts of devotion, love, and caring. For without them I would not be the person I am today. Hwa Rang Do has made me better in every way, as a man, a father, a husband, and a better leader in my profession. At my work I am a SAP KeyUser of an oil refinery in charge of approximately 150-175 coworkers who come to me with questions concerning all aspects of our work. However, they frequently ask for advice on personal

matters and I challenge them not by answering their questions directly, but to let them think of what they already know, seeking for the answers within rather than forming quick questions for others. This doesn’t always work and requires a lot of patience, but in doing this, I hope their eyes will be opened by showing them a different perspective, a new approach (just like my master did to me and still do.) BIOGRAPHIES OF SHAOLIN GREAT MASTERS - SHI DE CHAN Venerable Master Shi De Chan 释德禅 (1907 - 1993) I never thought that getting involved in translating and publishing biographies of great Shaolin masters would bring me such joy and happiness. I think these are lives worth remembering and honoring, and many times I ask myself: What would have become of Kung Fu we so much love without the endeavors and sacrifice those masters whose legacy illuminates our paths today? But it's not only the art of Kung Fu, but everything that revolves around it, that is, its philosophy, wisdom, self-knowledge, personal selfcultivation, the fact of being able to help others through the Shaolin Martial arts, and so much more. I believe that having the knowledge of where everything comes from and the effort that the old masters made to preserve it, makes its value be constantly enhanced and reassessed. It's incredible!

n this occasion, I would like to talk to you about Grand Master Shi Dechan, an expert in Kung Fu and Chinese Medicine, who was an honorary abbot of the Shaolin temple, and who throughout his life held positions of vital importance for the recovery and preservation of the Shaolin Martials Arts. Master Shi De Chan (释德禅) was born in 1907 in Zuo Zhang Village, in Deng Feng City in Henan Province. His

secular name was Liu Er He (刘二和). When he was just a child, his father passed away and he was forced to leave his family. These were very hard times in China, with a lot of famine. In 1916, at the age of 9, Master Shi Dechan entered the Shaolin temple and began his practices under the tutelage of Master Shi Suguang (1891 - 1917). Sadly, after just one year, Master Suguang passed away, causing the young student great anguish.

In the beginning he was assigned different tasks as a helper in the daily chores of the Shaolin temple. Respect for his teachers and his dedication and predisposition to work made him become one of the teachers' favorite monks. The following year he was sent to study at the Shaolin High School. Later, after finishing his studies, his â&#x20AC;&#x153;shiyeâ&#x20AC;? (master grandfather), Zhen Jun (1865 - 1939), observing little Dechanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brilliant intelligence and good attitude, decided to take him to study at another

Buddhist temple called Huang Wan Miao, where he studied Traditional Chinese Medicine. Then, in May 1924, at the request of the Shaolin Temple, he was relocated to a small temple so that he could manage it. In 1927 he returned to Shaolin to practice medicine, but in 1928 the temple was attacked by the warlord Shi Yousan, reducing much of the temple to ashes. It is said that more than 100 monks perished in this battle. Master Dechan remained in the Temple to face the situation and

fight the enemies, while other monks fled from there. At that time, General Pi Dingjun, of the People's Liberation Army, was camped in the Songshan area, very close to the Shaolin Temple. Master Dechan encouraged his disciples to join in the fight against the Japanese invaders. On many occasions, Dechan, risked his life trying to protect what he firmly believed in. Master Dechan helped preserve documents of great historical value from Shaolin Martial Arts and Buddhism, hiding them in times of chaos. Later, when peacetime

returned to China, he recovered the documents he had kept hidden in a secret place until that date. In 1948, when General Pi's group moved to southern China, Master Dechan decided to send his disciples Xingfang, Xingxang, Sulong and Suxiang to assist in the People's Liberation Army. After the war, Master Dechan participated in the Sanitary Association, as a member of the committee, helping those most in need. He himself looked for medicinal plants in the mountains to prepare the patches and syrups of traditional Chinese medicine.

With his selfless actions, he managed to win the affection and respect of the people. In April 1963, the president of the Shaolin Quan Fa Japanese Federation, the monk Zong Daochen, visited the Shaolin temple and especially Master Dechan, and they both forged a great friendship that would last a lifetime. After Daochen's death, his daughter visited Master Dechan every year, who had previously agreed to be his foster father on an honorary basis. In those visits, she was always accompanied by different delegations to visit Dechan, which fostered the developing of strong bonds of friendship between the two peoples, China and Japan. In 1965, Shi Dechan was appointed as the abbot of the Shaolin Temple in an honorary capacity, and in November 1982 he was also appointed as the director of the China Buddhist Association. That same year, in the month of December, he held the post of vice president of the Deng Feng Shaolin Wushu Association. In his last years, being over 80 years of age, he continued to work twelve hours a day, and from 1981 to 1983 he organized the disciples in the Temple so as to compile the knowledge of the Shaolin Kung Fu and the Shaolin Traditional Medicine among other things. Grand Master Shi Dechan contributed greatly to the conservation of the country's cultural heritage. After 1982 he helped Master

Shi De Qian for the edition of the book "Shaolin Quan Pu", with a total of more than 50 books on Martial Arts, Medicine and History. He transmitted Deqian all his experience of over 50 years in Chi Kung and Chinese Medicine. Master Shi Deqian was famous for the number of books he had edited and also for having published the "Encyclopedia of Shaolin Kung Fu", composed of four volumes where you can find History, empty hand and weapons forms, Qin Na (grip and control of the opponent), Sanshou or Sanda, Chinese Medicine, Chi Kung, etc., but we will talk about him in another article. Since 1985, his state of health deteriorated more and more until he was bedridden in a wheelchair. Nevertheless, the levels are qualitatively different from each other, so consider all three types of work of each level in detail. The suppression (density) at the energy level is the same attack, only a little earlier than the attacker. After such an attack, there is no need for a meeting at the physical level, or this meeting loses its original meaning (see exercise radiation beam). Management can also be present without physical contact (for example, the work of M. Ueshiba, A. Kadochnikov, A. Lavrov, M. Rebko, V. Vasiliev, A. Andreev) with the enemy at a distance. This is the correlation of our inner strength with external circumstances for the realization of the desire for something. The triangle is the most rigid figure capable of destroying very much in its path, but with the help of rounded forms it can flow from one state to another. Fig. 40. Triangle is a state of superiority, a tendency to blame everyone and everything. The person is very purposeful, firm and resolute. This is just one example of geometric modeling of the psychological state (Figure 42).

He can control the desires of other people, using for this self-pity. Rectangle - a condition internally vulnerable, such a person is a good performer, a "computer", a typical observer, he is emotionless, cold. A curve, a broken line, an acute-angled line is a person who is contradictory, searching, creative. He can "ruin" the task entrusted to him, since he does not believe himself. The circle is a very fluid figure, compatible with all figures. According to the Russian military tradition, there are extreme pure states of man. These are special states of mind and body, briefly they can be described in this way: The first state is a victim . She radiates the smell of death, all her thoughts about the impending attack on her. The victim agrees with everything that happens around or specifically with her and timidly "snaps." In animal victims, the eyes are arranged so that they cover almost 360 Â° of the survey of space. The second clean state is a predator . He looks for the victim, smells the death. Systema SV If a warrior does something, then he is removed from these cases. Do not give them more importance than just business. The path of the warrior is the path of perfection. A warrior is not attached to his personality, he destroys life patterns, takes responsibility for his decisions and takes his fate as it is. To complete the definition of a warrior, we should add that he has: • self-control always and everywhere (acuity of perception - sensations, attention); • patience (ability to withstand a pause); • Timeliness of decision-making (sense of the moment); • responsibility for decisions made (to have honor); • unbending will (personal strength, strength of intention); • affection and cunning ("flexibility" of behavior, sociability). In the warrior, mastery of martial art is combined with mastery of any craft and freedom from Krivda (carnal desires). The warrior listens to himself: as long as he feels Truth in his heart, he is invincible. A warrior can be killed physically, but not spiritually. Subsequently, it is important to perform a series of exercises in the form of a game of sensations and transitions from one state to another. In each game there are psychoaesthetic processes, which in turn activate the analyzers of the cerebral cortex: auditory, visual and tactile-kinesthetic, bring the central nervous system into an active creative state, which ensures a correct response to the situation. In battle, you need observation, sharp eye, delicate hearing and high kinesthetic sensitivity even by an easy touch to you or you to the enemy, you can draw a conclusion about the state of the opponent's psyche. With the help of observation or visual acuity, you are able to recognize a person, his intentions and inclinations, and then use this knowledge in combat.

Systema SV Combat is a special state of mind, involving the shift of consciousness to another level (the connection of consciousness with the subconscious). Having only one flexibility of behavior and acuity of perception, it is unlikely that anything can be done correctly. It is also necessary to have a pre-state, or a resource state, before the battle (during the battle) and a great deal of intent in what task you wanted to solve in battle. And also the strategy and tactics of the combat task solution are needed. From all that has been said, one can clearly see that fisticuffs and hand-to-hand fighting are a dialogue, or even a polylogue, in which disputes are possible. Conversation is the exchange of information (beliefs, points of view, etc.) on the verbal level, is the psychology of communication. And after all, by communication, you can also determine how your interlocutor will work in battle. Below I quote four main (principal) "pillars" on which a pyramid of knowledge and skills is built: • Resource state - the state of desire and inspiration, a rush to action and a vision of it; • Acuity of perception - perception of the world as it is, reflecting it by itself, the ability to pass through oneself, to be observant, cautious, is here and now; • Flexibility of behavior - destruction of patterns of actions, not doing, searching for the best, easier ways to achieve the goal. (Straight faster - the circle is shorter: "inclusion of a fool"); • The power of intention is a firm, purposeful, vivid, sonorous desire to achieve the desired results in combat and to act, to do something (and not try) in this direction. All four "pillars" depend on your personal inner strength, as well as on your faith, along the way which you go. If one of these "pillars" is fragile or completely absent, the pyramid will collapse in the direction where there is no support, and the remaining qualities will go to extremes, which in the end will lead to self-destruction. So treat everything happening easier and easier, but with due seriousness (with a smile in a state of detachment). Be natural, free in your thoughts, and then freedom will be born in your movements and actions. People with complexes have closed channels of perception of the outside world, the assemblage point of attention (TSV) is in a stationary state. There are a number of exercises to shift TSV, in particular psychophysical training, but they are not an end in themselves and do not fully lead to the ultimate goal of developing your abilities. Rejection of excess, choice of necessary: in food, in spectacles, in people, deeds - all this is an exercise that is given to us by the Creator in the form of a life path. But nevertheless there are ways of "accumulating" the spirit, as Prince BV Golitsyn said: "It's like the gradual filling of a jug." Here are two of them. 1. Performed in the direction of 4 sides of the world. Inhale, hands stretch upward, and exhale in the squat with the word "exile" - hands slowly move in front of themselves, fingers collected in a fist. 2. Remember yourself after sleeping, when we are sweetly drawn. At this time the body comes in complete order. This state can be transferred to the beginning of the battle. The body is mobilized, it is ready for action: the spiritual force adds up the skills and circumstances. Here we are dealing with a sense of the "distance of death" - an individual sense of danger, a "sudden stop," or timeliness. The trouble passes by - "bypass this cup this." The Spirit is the power inside and outside of us. The concept of "sudden stop" is far from being only physical. It is connected with the stopping of the inner dialogue, those thoughts that constantly flow through our consciousness, and in connection with this and the inhibition of all internal processes. At that moment a person falls into another spatial dimension and allows the force to work with him as an "ally". This is a very complex mechanism, especially for understanding by the mind ...

In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. News From 2 to 4 October 2020, a grand event took place - the All-Russian Aikido Festival of the Russian Aikido Federation in Yekaterinbur g, the press service of the FAR reports. The main news for all aikido lovers is that the world famous master Steven Seagal, 7th dan aikido Aikikai, has become the main instructor of the festival. The festival was attended by about 200 people, of which more

than 100 were children from 7 years old. Delegations arrived from different parts of Russia: Moscow, Kerch, Perm, Bereznikov, Solikamsk, Salekhard, Tyumen, Ufa, Pervouralsk P o l e v s k y, Ve r k h n y a y a P y s h m a , Yekaterinburg. t the festival, all the prescriptions of Rospotrebnadzor were observed and, thanks to this, representatives of different directions of aikido gathered on the tatami and got an excellent opportunity to practice this wonderful form of martial art. On October 3, Steven Seagal's press conference and the Festival Opening Ceremony took place. In his welcoming speech, Mr. Segal said: "I am very happy to be here, and I thank all of you (festival participants - approx.). Let's start practicing Aikido, Budo and Aikijujutsu to become stronger, to make the world a better place for all of us." It should be noted that at the last festival, Steven Seagal Sensei conducted children's aikido classes for the first time. He demonstrated the techniques very gently and carefully so that everyone could repeat the complex technical movements. Children from 7 years old were admitted to the festival and everyone had the opportunity to ask their questions to Mr. Seagal. He constantly walked around the hall, helping, correcting and suggesting to young aikidokas the

For ten hours of master classes, the participants of the festival plunged into the atmosphere of aikido, from classical basic forms to martial applied techniques. Within the framework of the AllRussian Festival of Aikido FAR in Yekaterinburg, the Universal Aikido Tournament was held. The tournament was attended by boys and girls from 10 years old, as well as meetings among men 18+. In a difficult struggle, winners from all age groups were identified. The winners were awarded with diplomas, medals and cups. The spectacular event attracts young people and we hope that this will not only increase their level of skill, but also attract new adherents to aikido. Within the framework of the Festival, the first diplomas of Ten Shin Aikido and National Danes were awarded. The diplomas of Ten Shin Aikido, certified in the FAR Summer School, received from the hands of Steven Seagal sensei himself. Nikolay Egorov and Natalya Rudneva presented diplomas of conferring National Danes. And so the Diplomas of the Aikikai Hombu Dojo were awarded.

THE EIGHT GOLDEN RULES OF THE WING CHUN By G.M. Fabio Bevilacqua

The study of Wing Chun, like other martial arts, involves a rigorous and indepth study pr ogram for its high principles and fighting techniques that initially seems separate from each other. As taught and handed down by G . M . C h o w Ts e C h u e n , f o r m e r student of G.G.M. Ip Man, the countless techniques of Wing Chun flow with each other, uniting them through principles that can be enclosed in eight main fundamental rules. Obviously, the Wing Chun style has innumerable principles, but the "Golden Rules" I'm going to describe in this ar ticle ar e among the most useful to remember and can also be observed by any other martial arts practitioner.

CENTRAL LINE CONTROL The Central Line also referred to¨Ji Ng Sin¨ is an imaginary line that divides the body vertically into two parts and along it there are some very vulnerable organs of the human body and pressure points. We will use our guard to protect it and attack that of the opponent, no matter if the attack is high or low, from the left or right, as we will never leave the center line open and vulnerable. Furthermore, our guard will keep our attacker away, giving us the opportunity to have more time, given the distance, to perceive his attacking movement and activate the defensive reflexes. Remember that joining two points with a straight line is the simplest way to cover a distance and in Wing Chun this principle is technically observed to attack and defend faster. Suffice it to say that assuming the same speed as the attacker and responding with ´Yat Ji Chong Kuen¨ or a straight punch with a curved trajectory, our attack would come first and would cancel the attacking one. There is a maxim in Wing Chun, which is "Ten thousand techniques originate from the Center Line".

Wing Chun NOT USE OF FORCE AGAINST FORCE As we all know, the Wing Chun system was developed by a Nun named Ng Mui about 300 years ago, and given her slender and relatively weak build, it did not allow her to use force against another aggressive force. Therefore, apart from the economy of movements, Ng Mui developed the principle of compliance by learning to deflect, neutralize or twist the opposing force. The use of force against force in addition to wasting more energy, makes the various movements flow less quickly and makes the body more vulnerable to subsequent attacks. Since not only the hands and legs provide for neutralizing and absorbing the opposing force, the body also acts in a positive way, for example by rotating the shoulders in order to create the slip of the attack or by activating the footwork to move. Another positive factor in directing again and deflecting force, when properly used, is not to alarm the opponent himself, as he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t provide this type of response.

APPROPRIATE USE OF KICKS The use of leg techniques can result in both defense and attack, and in the genealogy of GM Chow Tse Chuen, as handed down by GGM Ip Man, the correct use of the legs is given to that of the hands. In fact he himself said that in Wing Chun the hands are used to open, distract and control the opponent, while the real defense is located in the legs thanks to their attacking power. Ultimately, hands and legs comes together in coordinated work, giving the practitioner the opportunity to achieve greater results. The primary use of kicks requires those who practice them to have an excellent balance, especially if used in coordination with the hands. For this reason, there is a common belief in Southern styles and that is to use few kicks, since by lifting one leg to kick there is less chance of stability and balance.

Obviously this theory changes from person to person as some practitioners over the years will certainly have reached high levels in staying balanced. But it is always preferred to hit in areas from the Don Tien (area located 3 cm below the navel) down, so that the shorter the time the kicking leg is lifted off the ground, the less time the position will undergo unbalance to the ground. Another reason is one's vulnerability and in this case, when kicking, the area most at risk will be that of the testicles. In fact, by kicking at a low range, the leg will return to the ground faster to protect the same testicles.

Wing Chun LOOK AT YOUR ELBOW AND THAT OF THE ATTACKER The elbow plays a very important role during the phases of a fight and must not be too closed or on the contrary too open, thus determining its exact position downwards and in front of the center line, (A maxim in Wing Chun says: Â¨Fay Jahng By LickÂ¨, i.e. flying or open elbow loses power). All this has advantages, including that of protecting the body at all times without retracting the arm repeatedly, generating strength for any attacks or defenses and remaining on guard of the central line, offering the possibility to economize the various movements as much as possible without giving notice to the opponent. In fact, if the opposing arm moves, it will automatically accompany the respective elbow, thus providing the time necessary to take advantage of the directions of the punch. It can be seen that the elbow moves much less quickly than the fist to such an extent as to translate this time into distance for us and therefore alert our reflexes. The last useful trick is to understand that as the elbow moves by the arm, the knee does it by the leg.

CONTROL OF THE RESPECTIVE LIGHT AND SHADOW ZONES During the execution of the movements in combat, both in defense and in attack we must try not to show our shadow area. It is configured in the external parts of our arms and consequently put in danger the defense of the lateral and rear areas of the body. Consequently, the light zone is the angle formed by the imaginary triangles of our arms, useful for determining the target provided by the opponent. It can be understood that attacking the opponent's shadow zone and protecting one's own brings other advantages including the distance that the same opponent must cover to hit us. The same distance is a useful time factor for our reactions, giving us the opportunity to maintain a safe range with the opponent and implying on his part a greater exposure to ourselves.

A peculiarity in Wing Chun is that of using attack and defense techniques simultaneously. All this is applied, for example, when hitting, since there is no need to waste time between the various sequences and thus optimizing the quick advantage offered by the same rival. In fact, any hesitation before counterattacking offers the possibility of gaining more time and control to defend oneself. Using both arms at the same time helps us to continue the fight without hesitation and even if a first attack is blocked, we must think not to waste time as it becomes necessary to conclude every action in a short time. The wing chun system offers various training methods to improve various movements in the execution of sometimes opposite techniques, using closed or open hands, up and down, etc. For example a good wing chun practitioner could be compared to a good old-time gunslinger skilled in drawing two guns at the same time and firing simultaneously.

APPROPRIATE USE OF THE FOOTWORK

MAINTAIN A GOOD BALANCE Balance is very important and therefore maintaining and controlling a good body structure becomes primary in controlling the opponent. Without it, every action would become ineffective and consequently the energy that starts from our position could not be developed to the maximum and released through the various movements. At the same time, and in a strategic way, a good balance leads to a successful flow between the various techniques in a constant way, neutralizing the attacks with less effort. For this reason it should be remembered that in the wing chun it is preferred to keep the weight on the rear leg thus avoiding too open positions that could be dangerous or harmful to oneself. Furthermore, by maintaining your balance, you can use it to attack the opponent's one, in order to compromise

Footwork is essential in Wing Chun, as in any other martial art, it is essential not only to move in every part, but also to develop power, fluency and speed in a fight. In addition, the various movements through the legs give the fighter the opportunity to maintain an ideal range of safety with the rival in order to defend himself and counterattack in any direction. Another advantage deriving from the appropriate use of footwork, is to have more stability, to remain in the correct position at the right time, offering us the possibility of maintaining the use of the center line. In Wing Chun the use of footwork is more accentuated by the study of forms and formally introduced in Chum Kiu and especially in the second and third sections, where the use of Tor Bo and Biu Bo predominates. In the Biu Jee, on the other hand, the Huen Bo accentuates economy of movements with simplicity, but at the same time the effectiveness of moving in a circular way and intercepting the opponent while protecting oneself. Certainly the footwork is more accentuated in the wooden dummy form where the footwork is finished and a positive result is obtained in the simultaneous use of legs and arms for defense and attack. In the Wing Chun style, footwork has its peak of maximum aspect in the study of the butterfly knives (Bart Jarn Dao), where in this case the weight distribution falls or is divided between the front or rear leg of the practitioner offering him the possibility to vary through the use of the same techniques. There are many other principles or golden rules related to Wing Chun that could be observed without problems by any practitioner, the use of these principles by the practitioner leads to good mastery in carrying out fights and training where practice and knowledge are important. These simple and elegant principles will transform your fighting skills, whatever martial art you practice!

WCInternational A Simple way to Train a multitude of different idea for the Beginner Training the art of Wing Chun is a simple, practical and realistic form of self-defence not only does it help physically but can help mentally too. Understanding the system is not difficult and the outline or blueprint of the system can be learnt quickly depending on the hours spent training, however, it does take time to perfect and only persistence, focus and dedication to the art will develop into the best and most affective results.

One

(Chum Kiu) (Seeking the Bridge) form, flow is learnt, using the hands, arms, legs and feet together adding in redirection and eliminating hesitation. Hesitation in itself is a very dangerous flaw, in the real world of a street you will get injured or even killed. Again, structure and flow are paramount to success and survival. Understanding the applications of the Chum Kiu form are most important, they are not just a series of movements with no meaning.

(Siu Nim Tau) (A Little Idea). At the beginning of the martial arts journey, position and structure are most important. Without these two elements, the rest will never be perfectly right. Using the structure of the form gives a good solid grounding for what is to come next, using the form, movements and structure (‘’the bubble’’) and applying these in a fight situation.

(Biu Tze) (Thrusting Fingers) A form with devastating repercussions for the opponent. Understanding position, flow and structure, now leads to the focus on power and strength in the pure attack mode. A series of movements which are worthless without the understanding of the applications, and when to use it in combat. A motto for remembering the reasons why Biu Tze is so useful “If in trouble, you lose your bubble, no time to flee then look to Biu Tze.” If you are losing then fight for your life.

(Wooden Dummy) The form most seen on TV and in movies and revered by many. A form which can be practiced with or without a dummy as structure, positioning and flow of movement are just as important but with the added emphasis on the ‘’reborn force’’. Mook Yan Jong (Wooden Dummy – Reborn force) – Here we learn to deal with the close quarter grappling. The concept of the reborn force is, to yield to the stronger force, recoil, then strike back with more energy and power.

WCInternational Five (Looping) Taking the applications and making it fun to train rather than a chore. With an understanding of the forms in place, developing and being creative in the ways to train is the way forward. Using the applications, with a partner and looping different moves and counter moves to attack and defend, which will develop mental and muscle memory, using instinct and impulses rather than being robotic. One thing is for sure you will never be able to plan a fight when it happens. It will be explosive, chaotic and ugly. By taking the 4 concepts from the forms and bringing them into applications, to gain a greater understanding of our Wing Chun system, will give a massive advantage.

Four ways to Win The methodology behind ‘‘four ways to win’’ concept is to always want to win, regardless to what the opponent does, and is a great way to eliminate hesitation, and improve instinct, confidence and belief in your own Wing Chun.

One Simply a direct attack. If your opponent does not defend finish him without hesitation.

Two You go to attack, but the opponent attacks first, so you defend and then counter his movement and win.

WCInternational Three Go to attack, the opponent defends, and stops his movement instead of attacking so you complete your move and finish him with your attack.

Four Go to attack, your opponent counters your attack you counter his and win. By training these attacks and counters extensively, Impulses will develop allowing flow and instinct to take over, to complete the ways to WIN. Looking at each of the ways to win, feeling and searching for the impulses that will be found in these attacks, an instinct will develop, countering at the beginning of the attack, during the attack and at the end of the attack. If we were to apply this to our 4 ways to win, then we would have 12 different answers to an opponentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attack, adding more tools to our tool bag. From here, taking the ideas of 3 ways to counter, looking to find even more, we do this by training with many different people, giving us different impulses, so we learn how to change and adapt our Wing Chun to suit all possibilities and this is only for the beginner.

A RETURN ON INVESTMENT By Grandmaster John Pellegrini

Most people believe that the principle of “Karma” as expressed in the Buddhist and Hinduist religions refers s t r i c t l y t o a p e r s o n ’s c o n d i t i o n i n f u t u r e reincarnations based on their actions (good or bad) in this life. That, of course, is an oversimplification of a much more profound and complex spiritual concept. M o d e r n We s t e r n p o p c u l t u r e o f f e r s f o r o u r consumption mostly superficial sound-bites and prosaic explanations for virtually every existential, social, political, or philosophical question. The truth is that the idea of “Karma” is not exclusive to the two above mentioned religions, and different versions of that esoteric principle have existed for thousands of years in most cultures around the world. We are all familiar with the Biblical “You reap what you saw”, and with the wise and practical axiom that in all relationships, as well as in your professional life “You get out of it what you put into it”.

nother moder n adaptation applies to business management and finance: good decisions (good actions) will produce a rewarding return on investment (positive Karma), while bad or stupid decisions (bad actions) will result in losses and failure (negative Karma). The recent and ongoing surge of News stories on social unrest resulting from incidents of Police use of force have led me to reflect on that, and to recall one of my previous essays that, although relevant throughout all of history, it has now, in view of those tragic events, acquired an almost prophetic quality. A few years, ago I penned a cogent and insightful essay on the relationship between Police work and the Martial Arts, and I was bluntly critical of Police officials (Management) being reluctant, dismissive or short-sighted concerning the need to budget the funds and time to provide badly needed competent, proven, and effective Defensive Tactics Training to their officers. I was equally critical of Martial Arts Instructors claiming, or, better yet, “pretending” to have the necessary knowledge and skills to teach Police officers techniques specifically designed and legally appropriate for their mission. Sadly (but predictably), my honest and thoughtful dissertation achieved absolutely nothing; it did not stimulate any positive improvements, and it failed to bring any change to the unfortunate status quo. Having spent twenty years of my life in the Law-Enforcement field (in several different positions); and still today, remaining an official part of that community, I am extremely supportive of the work, mission and duties of Police officers around the free world. In fact, I am what many would consider a “hard-liner” when it comes to dealing with violent

offenders, predators, career criminals, gang members and terrorists. However, when dealing with UNARMED subjects, I believe that the use of lethal weapons is not only unnecessary and illegal, but actually seriously damages society’s image, respect and support of LawEnforcement. So, why do we have so many incidents of unarmed offenders being killed by Police officers? What is the answer to this deeply emotional, divisive, and socially explosive issue? We could start (rightly) by arguing that if the subjects being stopped, questioned, detained, or in the process of being arrested, would NOT resist, fight or assault the officers, none of these incidents would ensue. But human nature being often negatively affected by drugs, alcohol, bad judgement, hatred, stupidity, fear or even selfdestructive psychosis, has always and will always inevitably produce a certain number of tragic results. And it

is exactly the understanding of this unfortunate, albeit undeniable and unavoidable, reality, that should lead society to a sensible approach for a possible solution: Better and more frequent Police officers’ TRAINING! Lack of confidence, stemming from a conscious (or subconscious) awareness of one’s lack of skills, combined with an adrenalin induced stressful condition, will invariably result in the officer’s resort to weapons, with the episode escalating out of control and often turning lethal. We all know (although some do not want to admit it) that all Martial Arts are NOT created equal. Many are designed primarily for sport competition; a few are lengthy and demanding journeys into mystical enlightenment; and some others are intended to be wholesome, positive family activities. Of course, there are also Arts that incorporate a combination of all of those characteristics. I am a firm believer that ALL Martial Arts offer tangible benefits to

anyone interested in improving their mental and physical health and learning basic selfdefense skills. However, I also believe in SPECIALIZED training for specific groups of professionals in our society. And Police officers are one of those groups. I have advocated special training, customized to the unique needs and requirements of the Law-Enforcement profession, for almost thirty years, and although I have been relatively successful through the creation of the International Police Defensive Tactics Institute (IPDTI), I must admit that I have barely “scratched the surface” of this thorny issue. As I have stated in my previous writings, part of the problem rested with the Martial Arts community itself, stubbornly refusing to concede and acknowledge that there is a difference between Martial Arts training and Police Defensive Tactics. But the biggest obstacle has always been (and still is) the ignorance, arrogance and close-mindedness of the Police “management” hierarchy. To be fair, in free societies, the Police is subjected and answers to “civilian” authority, which means that politicians such as the Mayor, city councils, county commissions, and other government bodies, determine the budgets, allocations of resources, programs and policies of the Police agencies. Making the situation even worse, today many top Police executives are career political creatures, who owe their position (and great financial compensation) to their “correct” political postures, their diversity status, their appeasement of socalled community activists, and their willingness to go along with the “system”, even if it means accepting budgets and policies detrimental to rank and file officers. Add to the mix the fact that some despicable politicians are actually blaming the Police for civil unrest, outrageously expressing support for and refusing to prosecute looters, arsonist and violent rioters. In calling for the defunding, reduction (and in some cases outright abolition!) of the Police forces, they are pursuing an idiotic and extremely dangerous course

that can only engender an out-of-control crime wave, and a general collapse of law and order, possibly even degenerating into a state of anarchy. It is a perfect example of the unfolding of Karma, and the consequences cannot be escaped. However, as disheartening as the situation appears; as grim as the prospects seem to be in view of these disastrous situations in several large cities, we cannot give up and accept this sordid state of affairs. Those of us in the Martial Arts community who are interested, willing,

capable and competent to teach Police Defensive Tactics must take up this noble cause; we must step forward, be vocal, be courageous, and be unwavering in our commitment to improve the peace, safety and security of our communities by providing this neglected, underrated, but much needed, life-saving training to Law-Enforcement agencies . We must be undeterred in our effort to convince Police officials and civic leaders of the necessity and benefits of unarmed, non-lethal training for their officers. They will receive a priceless return on their investment.
