(Long Hand) simply means long-distance combat, a method that teaches you to stay away from your opponent and hurt him without even entering the hand-to-hand distance. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula. When the Philippine Arnis spread in the West, to distinguish it from Fencing, it was called "the living hand fencing", because the hand that did not hold the weapon, actively collaborated in the actions of defense and offense. Thus, the difference between the two systems, the East and the West, is that in Olympic fencing, the unarmed hand is kept safe and used at most to balance the impulse in assaults; in Arnis the unarmed hand is alive and active. In this work, Professor Maltese shows us the basic positions, defenses and fundamental attacks, guard exercises, blocking, crossing and counterattack in Redondo, the fifth, seventh, eighth and contras defenses, dynamic training and free combat exercises with protections. ne day, while a couple of tourists were on a photographic safari in Africa, their car broke down, with such bad luck that, shortly after taking the road back to camp, they found themselves face to face with a crouching cheetah stalking them. One of them hustled to ran out at full speed, while the other remained froze. Seeing his fellow of misfortune leaving him, he shouted: - Are you crazy?? Do you pretend to beat a cheetah?? The elusive man on the run shouted back: - Of course not!! All I need is ... beating you!! The pandemic has left behind a lot of damage in the Martial World. Closed gyms that have not been able to reach an agreement with insensitive landlords; masters who made up a living from giving seminars all over the world they're now bankrupt; associations with members unable to pay their fees, and so on... The domino effect has affected almost the entire sector: equipment sales, clothing, tatamis, event organizers... everybody, to a greater or lesser extent, has suffered and still suffers the economic consequences of the COVID. However, there have been two distinct attitudes to face this problem. Those who have reacted quickly by trying to adapt to the situation with new strategies, and those who have only tried to adapt by taking steps back. The second system is the first logical reaction, but it has a problem, which is that if you go back far enough, you end up hitting the wall, and when the time comes there will be nowhere you can go back to. You can’t rationalize misery. The most creative and prudent ones sought to adapt and to that extent promoted their lines by activating their communication through the Internet, building loyalty to their people and taking proactive positions; some of them even explored beyond the situation and looked for new chances where others saw only trouble. There is no doubt that the Internet, which was already the main communication engine when all this trouble hit

us, has now positioned itself, even for the most reluctant, as the most significant space for work, business and promotion, also in the Martial world Those of us who were already warning that the Internet was not the future, but the present, were suddenly quasiprophets in the sector, along with those who had already done their homework organizing our communication and business adapted to postmodernity, we all managed to get through these hard times better. Those attached to rigid routines and formulas, the most recalcitrant, anchored in outdated patterns, had a hard time and the worse is yet to come. Traditional lines of business will always be there, but today you cannot survive nor win the future ignoring or underestimating the most powerful exchange and communication system that has existed so far. In the midst of the pandemic we launched our new website, a thorough work of almost two years, carrying out an expensive and complex upgrading of the more than 10,000 pages that compose it, which is probably the largest website in the sector worldwide and in several languages. In top of all this, we released a new magazine, the Russian language edition, and we broke all the reading records of our magazines in their ten languages, because people, confined and away from their teachers, had more time to dedicate to us and a bigger need to seek information and intellectual and even moral shelter. We released new videos, of course recorded in origin, because the Masters couldn't come to roll in our studios, but the editing, post production and inclusion of languages, we kept doing it them here. The Masters closest to the Budo family, and who asked me from the first moment my opinion or advice, know now, after these months, that my warnings were correct and my predictions unfortunately very accurate; some of them were even published in a quick editorial,

Being resilient and proactive when everyone stands still, is the best way to save ourselves from the cheetah! And if we’ve been caught... Well, that’s it... Get up and fight for your life! This will pass, but the most important thing is how we have gone through it, so courage and get the bull by the horns!

Self Defense Real Training for Self-Preservation It’s hard enough to train in one type of self-defense art form and be able to achieve a “real save your life” result from it. Stand up and ground fighting styles are more popular than ever due to violent sporting events such as Boxing, Kick boxing, Muay Thai, Judo and Jiu Jitsu to name a few. Let us add projectiles, edged and blunt weapons into the mix and WOW! Now we are talking Jason Bourne (Bourne series), Robert McCall (The Equalizer), Mike Howell (American Ultra), and the John Wick series. Violent action movies are entertaining and fun to watch. We would all like to be able to fight like these badass fictional characters who are all able to execute perfect techniques against multiple attackers trying to take them out. This is all very unlikely and unrealistic, unless of course you are a top hired assassin.

Self Defense Fortunately, we can train diligently to enhance our own level of skill set. “This does however, take commitment and dedication to achieve the level of instinctive tendencies to truly be able to protect yourself from harm, mild to the very severe”. Depending on how you train and how often you do so will determine the outcome of the level of your skill set you are seeking. You do not have to be a black belt to pull off practical techniques, although you must definitely practice them until they become instinctive. My teacher and mentor in the Filipino warrior arts Edgar G. Sulite Founder and Head Instructor of Lameco Eskrima always stressed the importance of practicing. He states, “Repetition is the mother of all skills.” That is what I live by not only when p r a c t i c i n g the ar ts but in ever yday activities.

Frame of Mind Hostility and or aggression is not a normal part of our daily ritual and lifestyle, but it definitely is in our blood. Road rage, for example can bring out aggression along with acting out with one or all parties involved. Of course, you should never involve yourself in that type of predicament. However, should you find yourself in the center stage of a situation where the other party becomes violent, would you be prepared? If you are a responsible gun owner and carrying concealed, would you use it? Is the level of violence towards you, a loved one or even an innocent bystander great enough for you to utilize deadly force? Individuals have in the past and present used deadly force during a confrontation that could have been easily avoided. Being pushed or shoved does not justify pulling your weapon. This can land you in jail and in court not only with the state but also with a civil lawsuit filed by a grieving family.

Self Defense for taking my parking space or cutting me off. When walking towards them with a very angry attitude along with an outburst of profanity, I execute a shove or push and their first reaction is to draw their firearm and point it at me. Fifty percent proceed to actually pull the trigger. I have always stressed when deciding to carry concealed how crucial it is to learn how to defend yourself without using lethal force. It always amazes me how a person with no experience carrying a concealed weapon decides to use deadly force in a confrontation when it is not necessary. In the United States of America, CCW - Concealed Carry or Carry a Concealed Weapon is the practice of carrying a handgun or other weapons in public in a concealed or hidden manner, either on one’s person or in close proximity. Individuals must pass a thorough security background check to ensure a clear background along with a gun safety course to qualify.

Real Training For Self Preservation Once you make the commitment to training, we must first understand what “Real Self-Preservation means”. Definition: The protection of oneself from harm or death, especially regarded as a basic instinct in human beings and animals (definition from Oxford languages). “When training for self-preservation, we must first acknowledge we are training to be able to become violent when necessary. Much more violent than our aggressor’s”. In order for an individual to overcome a violent in your face encounter, you must be able to overwhelm your attacker with more aggression and violence. Your “killer instincts” must kick in along with your fight arsenal until the threat is no longer present. A great example of aggression are violent sports such as boxing and cage fighting where two opponents face off with one another and commit to violent tactics such as punching, kicking, throwing and submissions. The most violent of the two is always the victor. The same applies when you are faced with that type of aggression. Of course there are always other options. You can attempt to negotiate and talk yourself out of the situation by complying with their demands and hope and pray all will go well. Escaping/running is another option, just make sure you are not being chased down and then trapped where ultimately you may have to fight for your life. Hopefully, you never have to face an attacker who is willing to kill with no respect for human life.

I have always believed fighting back and surprising your attacker in any bad situation gives you a higher percentage of coming out on top. This is merely a suggestive anecdote that has worked for both a handful of my students including myself. Training in basic and practical techniques is essential in your fight arsenal so do not make it harder for yourself. Using your intelligence should be your first option. Practicing these techniques can and will make a difference in the outcome of a self-preservation situation if you have not deescalated the situation.

Self Defense P-2 Handgun - basic technique: 1.ACCESS - Accessing your weapon. This is the most important technique when you are carrying it on your person, in your vehicle, in a bag/purse or even in your home. If you cannot access your weapon, you cannot use your weapon! 2. PULL - Pulling your weapon from your holster maintaining your muzzle towards your holster pointing towards the ground. This position is the decisive moment whether or not you are committing to point and or shoot your threat. Remember, fingers off the trigger! 3. ROTATE - Rotating the gun so your muzzle is facing the threat. Being able to shoot from the hip position with one hand is essential especially in a close quarter altercation. 4. COMPRESSED - Compressed position is bringing your gun in front of your torso using both hands while maintaining your elbows in close proximity of your body. 5. EXTENDED â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Bringing both arms out to a full extension. All techniques are executed with FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER until ready to shoot. Safety is the top of the list! Always assume a firearm is loaded. Never point your Muzzle in the direction of any persons until ready to shoot. These techniques can be done solo in a concealed carry position wearing a shirt or jacket to cover your firearm. Imagining a wouldbe attacker walking up on you from fifteen feet. Acknowledge the threat, footwork is a must so

Self Defense create distance and access your concealed weapon. The would-be attacker notices you are reacting and catches sight that you have ACCESSED your defensive weapon. They think twice and walk away. Now the threat is gone and you never had to pull your weapon from your holster. This would be the ultimate scenario! Even if you had executed the second PULL technique, you can still recover by holstering if the threat disappears. Now let us continue the drill using the first three steps. Imagining the attacker did not stop their threat. Continue by pulling and rotating your gun pointing towards your attacker (finger off the trigger until ready to shoot). The same drill can be continued using the fourth and fifth steps. Practice and repeat until you are comfortable to use other scenarios. Now use the same technique with a partner to make it much more intense. Remember that SAFETY is a priority so use a TRAINING GUN. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing how difficult it is to just access your weapon when your training partner rushes you with a training weapon, edged or blunt. Practice makes perfect so repeat 1,000 times then repeat again until it becomes instinctive! Edged and Blunt weapons - basic techniques (Use your dominant side to start and switch hands as you get comfortable). Utilize all weapons and non-weapons such as a training knife, rattan stick, rolled up magazine, umbrella or a tennis racket so you may feel the difference in weight and length. Remember to swing using your hip for ultimate power on impact and not just your arm.

P-3 1. Grip your weapon as you would a tennis racket or a hammer. 2. Swing with a forehand diagonal down stroke from you right shoulder to your left hip. Continue the movement with

a back hand stroke from your left shoulder to your right hip and back to your right shoulder. Repeat the two strikes creating angles that look similar to a V (forehand and backhand) pattern aiming at your attackerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head area. Note: Maintain a strong grip and do NOT twirl your weapon. 3. Swing your weapon from right to left using a horizontal pattern aiming at the center mass of an imaginary attacker. Start from the right side with your palms up and palms down from the left side.

4. As you get a little more comfortable with your body mechanics, begin swinging your weapon/s with more intent. When you hear the air whizzing as you strike, you have accomplished the intent part. 5. Using an old tire as a hitting apparatus is one of the best workouts you can have. Hit the tire as hard as you can with the V and horizontal patterns to simulate hitting a body. This exercise not only strengthens your grip it also enhances your fighting attributes such as Distancing along with footwork, Power, Precision, Intent and Timing which all contribute to becoming a superior and smarter fighter. Blisters are common and will be part of the first few sessions. Repeat 1,000 times and repeat again until it becomes instinctive. Preparedness is the key to success! With that being said, should the situation arise where you ultimately must defend your life or the life of a loved one, ARE YOU PREPARED?

This is how Grand Master Chaisawat describes the origins of his fighting system. A cultivated, sensible and extremely intelligent person, Master Chaisawat has been a reference for hundreds of Muay Thai practitioners along the years. His analytical mind allowed him to dissect, examine and re-arrange a huge amount of technical data that he collected in many years of research. In fact, Master Chaisawat has spent almost 60 years studying the principles of Muay Thai back to the very roots of this Art. In the course of his research about ancient Muay, he found that over the centuries some important techniques and crucial fighting principles had been forgotten and disappeared from modern practice. Therefore, thanks to a careful process of trial and error, he worked relentlessly to restore those missing parts, bringing Muay Thai techniques back to their original efficiency. Moreover, he combined, as it was the ancient custom, bare handed fighting with the use of short and long weapons, blending both skills into a moderntraditional style.

Grand Masters was very lucky to get to know such a great personality: since we first met in 2014 we have established a great friendship based on mutual respect and a shared passion for Muay Thai. His high technical expertise and vast knowledge of all aspects of Siamese- style fighting (both armed and unarmed) make Master Chaisawat a true Thai national treasure. From a technical perspective, Muay Chaisawat is a very well rounded fighting style: several long range, middle range and short range tactics are included in this Martial Artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s syllabus. All the fighting strategies are divided into two big â&#x20AC;&#x153;familiesâ&#x20AC;?: the first one is referred to as Mae Mai (or mother principles) and the second is called Look Mai (or children principles). Master Chaisawat usually compares the Mother Principles to the vowels and consonants: using the Children Principles on the other hand is compared to the introduction of the syllables and the combination of syllables to form words, simple sentences, complex sentences and so on, up to the creation of epic poems.

Grand Masters Furthermore, Mae Mai teach the fundamental aspects of a fighter’s background. First of all, how to use the body weapons or Gaya Awoot. Secondly they teach how to move in all directions with perfect balance. Also, Mae Mai include a vast array of defensive principles and strategies meant to protect the fighter from most kinds of attacks (punches, kicks, knee and elbow strikes, grabs and so on). Once a trainee is well versed in the basic fighting strategies, he shall be introduced to the subtleties of Look Mai. The logic behind Children Techniques is to combine the basic principles included in Mae Mai in order to create advanced offensive or defensive combinations. The former are called Look Mai Rook and the latter are referred to as Look Mai Rab. Look Mai Rook are generated by a logical combination of Mae Mai principles and are structured to be extremely difficult to counter: in fact, not all offensive maneuvers are “real” attacks. On the contrary, according to Master Chaisawat, a good fighter should be well trained in mixing real and fake attacks in order to create his own unpredictable offensive combinations. This is one of the typical features of this refined Martial Art.

Muay Thai When Mae Mai are combined to generate advanced defensive strategies, they give raise to Look Mai Rab techniques. The principle of Look Mai Rab is to defend by blocking or evading the opponent’s initial attack (step one) and then counter with a single or several maneuvers (step two, three, and so on). The more a trainee becomes expert at combining Mae Mai in order to compose Look Mai Rab, the more he will develop effective combat strategies. According to Grand Master Chaisawat counter maneuvers can be executed according to 3 main schemes. 1. The first one consists in defending the opponent’s attack by blocking or parrying and then retaliating with our body weapons. This is the basic counter fighting system that most Khru Muay teach their students. 2. The second system consists in evading the opponent’s attack by dodging or sidestepping and then countering with one’s body weapon. This system is more advanced than the previous one and not many fighters reach a skill level that allows them to actually apply it in combat. 3. Hwa Rang Do The next chapter of my martial art journey is very precious to me. After graduating university with my East Asian Studies degree, I knew I needed more experience and wanted to dive deeper and get closer to the source of Hwa Rang Do. Although I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have money at this point in my life, I felt my motivation and hard work ethics made up for it, and I had plenty of time. So, I sent a special request to the World Headquarters asking if it was possible for me to come and train in exchange for work and services. To my amazement, not only was I accepted, but the Founder of our Art, Dr. Joo Bang Lee himself, offered me the opportunity to be a live-in fulltime apprentice!

o train and work directly with the man who introduced Hwa Rang Do to the public, the Supreme Grandmaster from the HRD Volume I book which inspired me to train, the man who is a living legend in the history of the martial arts, someone who lived through the turbulence of the Korean War, and someone who exemplified serving humanity, I was blessed; and while I certainly didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what I was getting myself into, I did know that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Needless to say, I packed up my old junk car and drove to LA! For all who know Dojoonim (the â&#x20AC;&#x153;owner of the wayâ&#x20AC;?), one of the first things you realize is how powerful his presence is. I am not only talking about his martial art abilities, which are unparalleled, but the sheer determination to his cause,

combined with his outpouring of kindness and compassion to his students, that generates an overwhelming sense of uncommon strength of spirit. One cannot help but be motivated and energized being near him. However, now living in a tiny 2nd floor room at HQ and working all week long for the dojang and the World Hwa Rang Do Association combined with teaching classes and training on my own, I also realized some of the burdens that Dojoonim carries. While most all other martial arts have broken up into fragmented chains now disorganized into many associations or independent schools, he had a vision of building a community of practitioners that would remain connected, intact through a cohesive system that also maintained its lineage with integrity, 58 generations and counting.

As I mentioned from part 1, Hwa Rang Do is not a conventional martial art. While so many other martial arts’ practitioners place value on how many techniques they know, how many ranks they can obtain crosstraining in different styles, how many knockouts or submissions they have, or how much they can profit, our mission is structured behind a single non-profit organization with a unique mission: “Hwa Rang Do: A Legacy of Loyalty, Relentlessly Seeking Truth, Empowering Loves, Serving Humanity.” When put in this perspective the Jedi-like mindset obviously resonates even more with our unconventional path in the martial art industry. One of my favorite sayings that Dojoonim shared with me is, “When a tiger dies it leaves its pelt behind, when a man dies, he leaves only his name.” Living a life of significance is something many people dream of, however, manifesting real impact in the world is another story. Throughout my two years living at HQ, I also made weekly trips through Los Angeles traffic to see Grandmaster Taejoon Lee (Kuksanim – Leader of Kingdom or Nation), Dojoonim’s eldest son. There is no possible way to put into words the mentorship, the time, and the experiences that occurred then and in the years since, from my relationship with Kuksanim. I’ll never forget my first-time training with Kuksanim. It occurred a few years prior to me moving to LA when I was a brown sash. After a solid morning training in all the regular classes, he arrived for the instructorlevel session and invited me to participate. Lo and behold, he began teaching us

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Traveling with Kuksanim and Dojoonim for events and business encounters was another privilege for me. I have been around the world with them to Korea, China, Europe, and back, meeting countless people from all walks of life along the way.â&#x20AC;?

Hwa Rang Do offensive knife techniques. Hwa Rang Do weaponry had already become a passion of mine, and while I had put in a good amount of time working with the long staff and the sword, this was my first time using a knife in this devastating manner. Of course, I enjoyed the training and the incredibly precise and detailed instruction of the class; however, seeing Kuksanim move with tiger-like ferocity, slashing cuts with the sharpest of lines right in front of me, was awe inspiring. His intensity can be overwhelming at times, but the accuracy, speed, and agility of his movement combined with incredible insight and passion is undeniable. Yes, it is fair to say anyone who trains with Kuksanim will immediately recognize that they are in the presence of a true martial art master! Now living in LA, my padawan-like mentorship began. As comprehensive as the physical side of training in Hwa Rang Do is, it is only a vehicle for the overall goal of personal development. One must also invest the time necessary to understand the self, the ego, and the subconscious patterns that generate the vast majority of our reactionary habits expressed in our daily actions and different personalities. While I have always been reflective, it was through the all-night discussions, the many outings in Koreatown, and meeting of various people via my time alongside Kuksanim that I began to

Hwa Rang Do process the nature of the human condition on another level. It was also helpful that we were able to connect deeply about philosophy, history, and religion (his field of study as well). More important than intellectual acuity, I realized that Kuksanim had a deep sense of both western and eastern worldviews, balancing and embodying both hemispheres. The way he connects the truths and principles of each side of the world left a profound impression on me, especially as applied to putting the concepts into daily life practice. Traveling with Kuksanim and Dojoonim for events and business encounters was another privilege for me. I have been around the world with them to Korea, China, Europe, and back, meeting countless people from all walks of life along the way. Through these adventures, I came to appreciate that real understanding of the world and nature takes place through life experience. I had been a fish in a small pond, and now swimming in the ocean, it was clear that my preconceived expectations of the world were naĂŻve and shortsighted. It is so easy to judge the world and others through our own eyes even though that is only a single limited perspective; however, the inherent selfcenteredness of that position leads to arrogance, prejudice, and selfrighteousness. Hwa Rang Do thank my teachers from the bottom of my heart for helping me to live life with compassion and humility. It has now been two-decades since I returned to Minnesota and began teaching in Minneapolis. Starting anything from scratch is a challenge, and I worked three other jobs while teaching at a community center with my initial students in order to get to the point where opening a full time Academy was possible. Since then, with the knowledge acquired from both Dojoonim and Kuksanim, we have steadily built a dojang that is a pillar of the community and have expanded multiple times. In 2010, we had a major expansion to add 2 more training areas to the facility, and even now despite the COVID pandemic and government restrictions we are moving forward with another addition so we can better serve our youth with a larger game room and classrooms for our school tutoring program, afterschool program, and various camps. All said, we have over 10,000 sq/ft dedicated to empowering our members through the principles and training that Hwa Rang Do offers. I greatly appreciate all of my students, their families, and of course all the instructors and staff that have been through our doors over the years. It is through everyone’s dedication and hard work to our cause that has helped us make a positive difference in the world, right here at our dojang. While we have all ages of children and adult students in our school, we have specialized in serving the youth. Just as

the ancient Hwarang trained the noble children at an early age in all types of life skills and subjects, I always envisioned recreating that type of atmosphere in the modern age. With a clear model from the past, we brought forth the “Tomorrow’s Leading Knights” (TLK) Afterschool and Camp Program. Participants in this program are doing more than just their regular martial art class sessions each day, as with the extended time they are now able to participate in structured activities related to the themes of Arts & Humanities, Science & Technology, Character & Service, Leadership & Virtue, as well as general life and survival skills. Since we have seen the public educational system focus more on the study for standardize testing, our children’s overall human development has suffered in many detrimental ways. Our TLK program fills the gaps that are neglected, and we look forward to the time when we are able to build an actual private school that combines Hwa Rang Do with academics. We are already offering school tutoring and have day camps running while the public school system is operating with distant learning due to COVID. This has been a life saver for many working families, but it also has brought a sense of stability and growth for the kids who have been suffering from significant anxiety and stress because of all the turbulence of the world. One of the most important lessons that Hwa Rang Do has taught me, is that I must do all that I can to stop living

Hwa Rang Do a reactionary life. No matter if one is sparring, grappling, weapon fighting, doing forms or dealing with students, parents, or personal relationships, as well as mundane tasks – having a reactionary mind leads to so much tension and strife despite their best of intentions. Our consciousness is limited, and we only have a fraction of a second to be truly responsive. Therefore, it is paramount to practice the art of being calm first, which is necessary to obtain any semblance of success and harmony. As I continue to teach in this topsy turvy world, it is my hope to help our kids move forward with their lives in productive and insightful ways by providing a facility, mentorship, and programming that lead them to strive toward maximizing their human potential. “Empowering our world, one student at a time!” is our way of being the change that is needed today. Especially, as the corruption of our society’s larger institutions and politics only increases, the more I journey, the more I try to let go of my immature, envious, and self-righteous desire to force change onto others, and now simply ask myself how well I can live my life by serving my students, families, instructors, teachers, through Hwa Rang Do and in doing so, I hope and pray that I am doing God’s will.

BIOGRAPHIES OF GREAT MASTERS Venerable Master Zhen Xu č´&#x17E; çťŞ Although I had this biography written a few years ago, the truth is that before I could bring it to light I had to do a lot of research. It also took me a while to find some photographic material as there is not much from those times. In the past, very few people had access to photography and what seems so common to us today was considered a luxury, a luxury that not all the population could have access to, including the monks. Master Zhenxu had to experience the most turbulent moments in the recent history of China: the fall of the Qing dynasty, the time of the warlords, the war with Japan, etc. In my stays in China some masters talked to me about him and told me some anecdotes that I'm telling you in this article. In 2012, I had the opportunity to visit his pagoda, located in the vicinity of the Shaolin temple, and pay a small tribute to the master.

enerable Master Zhenxu, who represents the Shaolin's 29th generation, was succeeded by Shi Suxi, of the 30th generation, then by my 31st generation master, Shi Deyang, and I, with the secular name of Shi Xing Jing, of the 32nd generation. As I have mentioned in other articles, for me it is an honor to be able to pay this tribute to the great masters talking about their lives, so that more people can know about them and thus enrich the Shaolin culture all over the world.

Below is the biography of Venerable Master Zhenxu Master Zhen Xu (1893-1955), surname Li, first name Zhengyin, was born in the southern part of Lu Zhuang village, in the city of Gongyi, Henan province, in 1893. Due to a severe drought in the Lu Zhuang village, their inhabitants left without food and for this reason young Zhengyin was sent to the Longxing temple in 1903 so that they could take care of him. The monk Chunzhi took him as an apprentice, and after taking the Buddhist vows he received the name Zhenxu. In 1920 accompanied his master to Shaolin and there he learned Kung Fu with Heng Lin, who was a famous martial artist. Zhenxu was good in almost all forms of Shaolin Kung Fu, such as Xiao Hong Quan y Da Hong Quan, Tong Bei Quan, Liuhe Quan, Pao Quan, Chunqiu Da Dao, Longquan Jian, Gou Chan, Shuang Guai, Cha Chui, etc.

Above all he excelled in the technique of Tie Shen Kao (hitting with the body), which he practiced arduously every day from morning to night in the hall of the thousand Buddhas of the Shaolin temple and also in the abbotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hall. One of the most amazing anecdotes that can still be heard in the Shaolin master circles is that Master Zhenxu cracked one of the hall columns by hitting it with his buttocks. It is also said that master Zhenxu managed to develop the Kung Fu technique known as Ti Qian Jin (500 kilos kick). On one occasion he kicked a large bell (about 100 kilos) two meters away, in front of other monks, leaving everyone with their mouths open and their eyes out of their sockets. In 1928, warlord Shi Yousan attacked and set fire to much of the Shaolin temple, forcing all the monks to flee. Master Zhenxu returned to his home village of Gongyi (formerly Gongxian) to stay there temporarily until the situation improved. He later returned to Shaolin.

Master Zhenxu was not only good at Kung Fu but he also had a high morality (wu de). He got along well with people from other Kung Fu schools, he respected other martial artists. He advocated “learning advantages from others that I don’t have, teaching others my abilities that they don’t have”. For example, in 1936, Master Haideng, from Sichuan, went to Shaolin to learn with Zhenxu, who met his demands without any problem. To develop Shaolin Kung Fu, Zhenxu taught the monks, despite he was always very busy. More than a thousand monks from Shaolin learned Kung Fu from him.

Zhenxu often taught his students that “one must practice Kung Fu with a positive attitude; first for the development of the country, second to protect civilians and third to strengthen the body”. In March 1944, Japanese aggressors entered the Song Mountain area and applied the cruel policy of “san guang” (kill everything, snatch everything, burn everything). General Pi Dingjun led his army against the Japanese fighting on Song Mountain. At that time, Professor Wei Nianming of the Shaolin school, who was working undercover, organized the “anti-Japanese group”. Then Zhenxu, as head of the temple and headmaster of the school, fully supported this action, and asked his first disciple Suxiang (sur name Wang, name Tianren), and other martial monks such as Xingxiang, Xingshu, Xingfang, to join the Yuxi army of General Pi Dingjun. The guerrillas under the help of Zhenxu fought with great force against the Japanese army. After the end of the war, Pi Dingjun’s army withdrew and several monks decided to enlist to continue fighting for the country. Zhenxu encouraged his disciple Zhiyuan and other monks to join the liberation army, exhorting them: “you must be brave, protect the country and all compatriots, develop our nation and bring honor to our Shaolin temple.” Master Zhenxu managed the Shaolin temple with great success and helped to preserve both the Temple and the Martial Arts. He transmitted to the other monks the love for the homeland and for their compatriots, in a really hard time for the Chinese people. Every spring, when peasants suffered from some kind of temporary shortage, Zhenxu organized a food collection for them and helped them in their daily chores. All the residents of the surrounding area appreciated him very much as Zhenxu was an honest, upright and kind person. He led a simple and frugal life and still he always helped the neediest. Master Zhenxu contributed greatly to the development of the Shaolin temple, to defend it from invaders and to publicize and extend Shaolin Kung Fu. He wrote some books such as "Method of hitting with the body" and "The Secrets of Acupuncture Points (Dian Xue - Vital Points)", among others. In 1954 he was already bedridden. He died in 1955 at age 62, his disciple, the monk Shi Suxi succeeded him. Bruno Tombolato Shi Xing Jing. 32nd generation of Shaolin Temple.

The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. We will start with the basic hooking, the “Regatón” to our opponent’s “Burra”, the way of training them, as well as some variants and applications, and their cons. We will also see hooks with the tip and some variants, the “Volcadas de Garrote” or "Envolcadas" and their cons, hooking from below, finishing with “Zapatas” or “Trabas” (takedowns), and some hooks from the outside with "Pinzas" and "Majadas" with great effectiveness in combat. We could not resist including some hooks with change of hand since they are our favorites in combat, despite their difficulty.

Algorithm of information transfer 1. Using the external force going from above and from below along the edge, merge it into one beam, which we direct to the exit from the chela (from the eyes) in the forehead of the opponent (or his left eye). Passing consciousness, strength and information fall immediately into the subconscious. At the neurophysiological level, information is transmitted and read by the subconscious of the enemy. Here we are dealing with force, or with a combination of different energies and neurophysiology (see Fig. 22, 54). 2. Then there is a transfer of information from the throat to the throat of the enemy (the force is formed in the same way as in the first stage). Then it breaks up at this level into two streams, two hands. Volitional tension and the desire for practical action - the power of

intention - ignite the centers of the shoulders and arms in blue: with a strong willed aspiration, the center of the throat is lit (sometimes with the appearance of a ray directed upward - into the ancestral memory, impulse ring). 3. We finish the transfer of information from the country to the nation (the force is formed in the same way as in the first and second stages). At this point, it is divided into two streams of legs or the motor center in general (Figure 22, 54). For example: "Deceleration / acceleration of reactions => the changed state of the person who transmits information enters the state of delayed reactions". After the "picture" slow motion will go from him through the neurophysiological channel to his partner. It is necessary to quickly break this connection (channel) after the transfer of information, so as not to leave behind it. Joining the egregors (interaction with external force) Work is performed from a distance of 1.5; 3; 5 and 10 m. If there is at least 1% of doubt, go to the physical work. 1. Adjustment (internal cross) and connection (direct to movement): • On the move (it is backward - you are ahead, it is to the left - you are right, etc.); • "podtsep" - "gluing" to the hands or feet of the attacker (counter movement of the hand - "density"); • "gluing" to the left eye (nose-brow) or to the occiput on exhalation, to inhale pulling to yourself. Identify the contact. 3. Create a hologram of the desired result. The construction of the "picture" in the three systems of perception. Create also a hologram of the desired result for the attacker. The design of his "picture." 4. "Extract", "break", "stretch", "reset", "twisting" - the organization of "emptiness", etc. If contact is lost, the control goes with correction. Pay attention to the loaded leg, the beginning of the opponent's movement and the "weighted" state of the attacker. Forms of work: 1. "Lining up", resting on the attacking ray (create "density"). Hands are folded by a wedge - the energy is added to form a ray. Using the ray, you can control the enemy (Figure 58).

3. "Reset" and "stretch". It is carried out by "picking up" to the hands or feet with an acceleration down the course of the attacker's movement. "Stretch" is carried out at the moment of "weighing" the enemy. This is a very important point, otherwise the attacker will not fall, but only fly past you, which can also be used, going to the physical level of work.

4. "Summary" - capture invisible thread "windows" of hands, feet with their own hands, feet (in the likeness), bringing together in one focus, at one point and further work (Figure 60).

"Wiring" - the same as "stretch", "throwing". Exhaustion in different directions is performed when a person is in a "suspended" state. 6. "Clamps", "poddavlivaniya." After "throwing", slightly push the attacker upward toward you with energy ("emptiness") of hands at a distance, and then break this connection, sharply lowering energy from the top down, as if spreading it in front of you, pressing it with the attacker ("density") ( see Figure 55). At work it is necessary to perceive the situation sharply, to feel it. Condition - moderate (neutral). A "weighted" state of consciousness (borderline state) is optimal for entering any situation. At this moment, we are under the imposition of the conscious and the unconscious. After some training, when it will be possible to manage your internal processes and body, you can only create a "program" by slightly breaking it in a time line: the "program" remains in your body as a response to the situation, the work is done by itself, our subconscious, or body , does the work itself. In general, the attacking person can do everything himself: fall, fly, pass by, disarm himself. There is a rupture of his "program" (breaking his stereotypes), inserting your, and then gluing, the formation of a new "program". We need to fling an imaginary world, another reality (a dragon) to the enemy, and then throw it into an obvious reality (our world). Holograms should be transmitted through information channels from their eyes to the eyes of the attacker. The hologram of your desired result is transmitted to the left eye of the attacker, to the right - the hologram of his aspiration (to hit you with a blow, etc.). The transmission occurs on exhalation with a thin beam (see exercise with a black dot on a white sheet). You can also use the transfer of information from the throat to the throat, distributing the force on your hands. Or from the coccyx to the coccyx - the transfer of information to the motor center (for example, to inhibit movements, etc.). When the process of "rectification" occurs, in other words, when the action is brought to automaticity, all this will work by itself.

Master Dmitry Skogorev is one of the most prominent figures of the Systema Russian Martial Art and leader of an international organization widely spread throughout the world. Systema SV (Sibirskyi Vjun) has a very well developed didactic formulation, which has given Master Skogorev a great deal of credit and recognition in many countries, where he regularly teaches seminars every year. Follow I like to explain the principles as an analogy for achieving things in life, so Strike for me means that there is a direct unobstructed way for me to get what I want. Stick could mean there is an obstacle, something hindering the attainment of what I want, it could be a personal or financial challenge, I don’t lose sight of the goal. Self Protection „If you can, avoid the fight at all cost “ AND „If attacked you must defend yourself“ I prefer the term self protection as I feel it is a little more pro-active…defending is more reactive and as we all have heard, the best form of defence is attack… Try keeping your composure, your inner balance when the person opposite wants to tear your head off, the adrenalin rush is telling you to do lots of things, and fighting probably is not one of them… When protecting yourself, without a doubt the most effective technique for self preservation is maintaining a safe distance, staying out of striking range. Managing the Distance... and if you can’t, try controlling the chaos... „Wing Chun doesn’t use Blocks …" This is just one of the many sayings from Wing Chun... AND it’s perfectly true... in the Dojo... When we train with our training partner, we have to remind ourselves, that’s just what we’re doing, definitely not fighting, differentiating between the two is very im-portant, and often overlooked.

Wing Chun International In the real world, If you haven’t got a limb or something between you and your as-sailant, it’s going to get messy… I love this quote from Mike Tyson, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." The best training in the world, regardless of what Martial Art, is worthless without situational awareness. If you are caught unawares then there will be a price to be paid... If you are lucky, you get to flounder around, regain your balance and survive the situation in one piece hopefully ... unscathed? Probably not.

Martial Arts, Realistic Protection, or Both? If protecting yourself is a deciding factor for your choice of Martial Arts training, then the style you choose or practice is going to have some type of “Fence” for on-time or pre-emptive protection and some type of “Flinch” for emergency and close quar-ter techniques. We are big fans of Geoff Thompson so we know that the fence can be a variety of things - from a pleading fence to a very aggressive posturing, spitting in your face type of fence. For flinch or close quarter combat we have movements from the Wing Chun Form Biu Tse, often referred to as the emergency or recovery form. It has structurally strong and aggressive footwork, with lots of elbows and grabbing techniques. We have ten Entry techniques that we teach from day one. It is a learning framework that provides some solutions on how to protect yourself. This plays out at the stage in a confrontation when somebody is trying to breach your fence. Three solution options are given, a left, a right and a what if?

I am 1,67m (5 foot 6 inches) and weigh 65 Kilos (not much), my 21 solutions are going to be different to someone taller, smaller, heavier, lighter, stronger or wea-ker… I get to become the master of my own Wing Chun… Spending time training these areas of self protection is key…It is also the success secret for all practicing martial artists. Repetition, Repetition and last but not least, Repetition.

Teaching Methodology Often I talk about the four phases of learning, Unconscious incompetence - you don’t know what you don’t know Conscious incompetence - you know you don’t know Conscious competence - you know what you know Unconscious competence - you don’t know what you know Have you tried to learn anything, regardless of the subject matter, when you are stressed out, in overwhelm or the task is complexer than you thought? It often leads to frustration and uncertainty. This is where Master Cameron’s Wing Chun training comes into its own... Here in the following pictures you see the intent of Alex as he attacks René (Red T-Shirt) Ren#e is learning to survive the chaos, the chaos being when your balance/ orien-tation has been compromised. Next we see that René has manged to regain balance and has his arms between himself and Alex. Alex is still trying to head butt René so he needs to protect his head and groin si-multaneously, surviving efficiently. Next René sees the chance to use an applicati-on from the Siu Nim Tao Form Set 6 and scoops Alexs leg up and at the same time destroys his balance with his lead arm. With Alexs balance destroyed it is a throat chopping end for Alexs attack. We begin at a tempo that supports our learner level, then gradually increasing the stress, the speed, and intention... until we are up to full speed, learning to Control the Chaos... Our self protection drills begin with this in mind, so at first, the training partner be-gins by attacking us slowly, regardless of whether this is a double / single handed or kicking attack, it makes no real difference, except maybe that the kicker has more difficulty in “controlling or dosing” their attack. By practicing slowly at first, the trainees have a chance to “feel” what is going on, develop muscle memory and the more the stress level is kept at a minimum the whole learning process is optimized... Then we use the success formula from above…Repeat…increase the

stress, Repeat…increase the stress and if there is a phase or part of the attack/ defense that needs more attention, through this learning method, we have a chance to cor-rect and fine tune it so it works for the trainee… What is also trained subconsciously in these drills is pattern recognition. The trainee gets to see what certain types of attack look like, and this again helps them to recognise dangerous situations faster. The learners comfort zone has been successfully expanded and they get to beco-me the Master of their own Wing Chun…

Tactile Awareness As I mentioned earlier, If you haven’t got a limb or something between you and your assailant, it’s going to get messy… This is where Wing Chun comes into its own in my opinion. ( I could be a little biased… ;-) )

On the traces of my roots I was in Valencia, at home enjoying the sun, beach, and sea, although in Zurich, in February 2020, the days were quite wet and cold. Practically every day I could walk with my mother along the beach boulevard, and despite the initial phase of the COVID time, completely recover physically and mentally, as well as make new life plans. In the following days and weeks, I wanted to determine, among other things, the seminar schedule for the next two years. Not only seminars that I wanted to give myself, but also those that I wanted to organize in the future at my place in Zurich. Of course, I had in the program to invite my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Mestre Carley Gracie, from San Francisco again. We had just had a great time with our students with seminars in Zurich, Berlin, and Athens.

Although I consider myself a 100% GJJ man, also because of my background as the last private student of Mestre Pedro HemetĂŠrio, everyone around me knows that I have remained true to my Jeet Kune Do, Kali-Silat and Muay Thai roots all these years, and have never made a secret about it.

Time to think, time to act! I had just decided these days that I wanted to expand my Jeet Kune Do/Kali group. But I had not made the calculation with the COVID-19! To give my JKD/Kali

students the opportunity to see beyond their own nose, I planned to host seminars not only in "JKD Concepts" but also in "Original JKD". JKD Concepts-wise I had invited Steve Grody (a top student of Inosanto) and excellent knife fighting expert to Zurich to present his teaching method. But I also wanted to introduce the "Original" Jeet Kune Do to my people, so I contacted some experts from the Taky Kimura and Ted Wong lineages. From the Ted Wong lineage, I contacted Joaquin Marcelo. Sifu Joaquin lives and teaches in Madrid and is one of the true representatives of the "Original JKD"-Line. His latest work is a book that can really show itself. It is even endorsed and available for purchase by Shanon Lee and the Bruce Lee Foundation.

As I mentioned before, I wanted to invite from the Taky Kimura lineage if possible. I met Master Kimura a long time ago, when as a young man around the end of '95, I went on one of my "typical" JKD roots trips to train with various Lee students, including Larry Hartsell, Jerry Poteet (who visited us in Zurich around 2002 for a seminar), Leo Fong, and of course to also visited the grave of the legendary Bruce Lee. At that time, I found it highly interesting that a Japanese (like Taky Kimura) would follow a "Chinese" style and master, and as a big fan of Japan I really wanted to meet this man. The sadder it makes me today that I had not followed this man and master when I wanted to do it. Today I received the sad news that Master Kimura has died, which in my opinion, is a great loss for the whole martial arts world. I can only hope with all my heart that his successors will take the opportunity to pass on his knowledge and teachings to the next generations so that it will not be lost. My deepest condolences go to the whole Kimura family and the JKD Kimura clan.

But who was Taky Kimura? In my opinion, very few people have met the real Bruce Lee, and by "real" I mean the person behind the scenes of his films and schools (in Seattle, Oakland, and Los Angeles). Among these few is certainly the legendary Taky Kimura, who

Grand Masters really spent his whole life passing on Jeet Kune Do, which he had learned without detours from the master himself. In 1959, shortly after Bruce Lee arrived in Seattle, and shortly after that he had lived in San Francisco, Kimura and Lee met for the first time in the restaurant of the Chow family, who were supposedly friends of Lee's father. Also, there was mutual friend Jesse Glover, one of Lee's first students. At the time, Lee (still) possessed a more classical Kung-Fu background as I understood. His knowledge consisted of Choy Lee Fut, Hung Gar, Mantis and Wing Chun, but he himself identified very strongly with Wing Chun, which he also taught - in a modified form – to his students in Seattle at the beginning. Taky Kimura very soon became, not only Lee's training partner, but also handed over the classes to him when Lee himself could not be there. Since Kimura was of Japanese origin, but born in the USA, it had become difficult for a Japanese person to live after the war (between the USA and Japan). Thanks to the confidence and task that Kimura received from his teacher and friend Bruce Lee, he regained self-confidence and inner strength, despite a difficult childhood. Kimura as well as Jesse Glover, were just in Lee youngest development time with it. So, they experienced firsthand the first challenge fights that Bruce Lee also had in his school. One of the more well-known stories around this time was that of a renowned karate fighter. Karate was the most prominent martial art from Asia at the time, and Lee became a real threat to the Asian martial arts community with his outspoken thinking. After Lee blocked the Karateka's hard kick and flooded him with fist punches, this within seconds, Lee was even willing to take the man in as a student. In my opinion, this shows how Bruce Lee was above it all. Soon Master Kimura took over the school in Seattle when Lee moved with his family to California. However, the connection between Kimura and Lee remained because Linda's mother, Bruce's wife, continued to live in Seattle and they met the family several times a year. This also made it possible that despite the bigger distance between the two, Kimura was able to continue and personally train with Lee. Through this personal instruction, Kimura noticed how Lee was becoming detached from "classical" Kung-Fu. As well as from the forms of exercise that he himself once advocated, for example, the Chi Sao from Wing Chun Kung-Fu. Lee simply meant that after training with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, he saw no further need to use for this form of exercise. Lee concluded that there was no need for "fixed" forms when facing an opponent like Kareem.

Jeet Kune Do: «Original» or «Concepts»? As a modern martial artist with deep roots in the traditional styles, but always focusing on the practical application for self-defense, no matter what period of my life, one thing that bothers me so much is this unnecessary secrecy.

When the Internet came into the world, I thought that now, thanks to this open source of information, we humans would exchange and support each other better. But this is not the case! On the contrary, today there are thousands of self-proclaimed gurus of all kinds. The "old" traps have simply been repackaged but falling into them is much easier today than ever before! In an interview with Taky Kimura that appeared in CINTURON NEGRO in December 1995, conducted by my former Sifu Chema (Jose Maria Fraguas), the interviewer also asked, "How would you describe the art of Jeet Kune Do?" And Sifu Kimura answered as follow: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I don't say I teach JKD since I learned with Bruce at an earlier time. Bruce revolutionized the martial arts world. I personally respect the value of traditional systems if they lead to personal liberation as a martial artist. What Bruce did and defended is difficult for most martial artists to maintain. Bruce used to say that "you will understand the simplicity over time". On the other hand, I can say that I am the only person in Seattle that Bruce was keeping "up to date" on what he created as Jeet Kune Do. Bruce Lee had his physical method which he called "Jeet Kune Do" and I sincerely believe that it must be preserved as the fundamental structure and technical core. What is important to understand is that just as when we observe a beautiful sculpture, we must understand the whole process through which the author of the work has passed. It is important, then, to "go through" the parts that he discards, study them and learn them... reaching the "final wisdom".

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attackerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. An Art that seeks effectiveness to arrest a person, always looking to nullify from the start the opponent’s ability to attack, through a complete arsenal of techniques with empty hands and weapons, and a whole structure of arrests with ropes and sticks to facilitate the actions of the other companions. In this first DVD we will study the technique of empty hand vs. empty hand in different positions, against Katana, Wakizashi and Tanto, the use of weapons (Hishigi, Jutte, KusariFundó) or any type of stick, displacements, blows, and Hojo-Jutsu and Shibaru techniques

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.
