In this second video of the series, Justo Diéguez, creator of the KFM Keysi Fighting Method, teaches us to systematically implement the tools on which the principles and concepts of the method are based, starting from patterns and basic sequences of defense against middle distance fist attacks. The street is not Boxing, Kick-Boxing or Thai-boxing, the street is brutal. We do not have space or answers, it's not something we expect, it will be a shock! “My treasure is my sailing ship; my God is liberty; my law, the strength and the wind; my only homeland, the sea!” Espronceda y personal relationship with the military world and the military people has always been, as fruitful as strange, and certainly the least we could say about it is that it was extraordinary and even picturesque. Several have been the representatives of this collective that have crossed in my life (and I in theirs), and everything always wrapped in the most surprising situations. I’ll tell you about some of them today. Among all the military people that I met and treated, there was a Cavalry officer for whom I had a great sympathy: Colonel Ricardo Ramos Alcaraz, an extraordinary person with a shocking and spectacular biography. Germanophile, he was a highly cultured man of an ancient military lineage and an extraordinary horseman, whose biography looked more like a novel than the life story of a real character. He suffered in his flesh the results of unbridled passion and participated in quasi-surreal situations during the Late Francoism; later, when he retired, he spent several years living in a “Llaüt”, a classic Ibizan ship, and, like Espronceda's pirate, he devoted himself to living his poem. A military and an anarchist converged and crossed paths within himself. Actually, there’s not that much distance between both of them, believe me! Paradoxically, those who so earnestly seek the external order, it's because deep down they lack it within themselves. Putting the bridles on that runaway heart cost my friend Ricardo dearly. He was a young lieutenant stationed in the United States as an army rider, when he fled to Mexico with the American colonel's wife. Belonging to a family of such noble military ancestry like his, the news was a scandal. In the end, he became disillusioned with the relationship with the “she-colonel”, who eventually returned home to her husband after the hot flashes. As for Ricardo, it was his father who negotiated his return to Spain, and that meant his passing for a long sentence in a military prison. In his case he was sent to build roads in Western Sahara. The long cold nights of the desert and its pristine sky gave him time to recreate his inner life. With no hope of ever getting out of there, he nevertheless had the fortune of being amnestied, like many others. A new atmosphere was breathed in Spain and he could return to his military career, where he was welcome within the framework of the soldiers for democracy group, since all the condemned were supposed to have an anti-Franco political view, although he had been punished for having been a young shameless and incontinent philanderer; from his slyness and humorous cynicism, he never failed to appreciate the irony of events. However, in the following years he rendered many valuable services to the state.

A sentimental dreamer and a military to the core, he possessed that sense of honor that transcends professionalism and that nearly cost him his life on several occasions. It was not a minor episode (it will not appear in the history books) when, skipping all the rules and disobeying orders received, he commanded to plant explosives in the restaurant where it was going to be signed the exiting of Spain from North Africa and the delivery to Morocco of control of the territory. He and a sergeant under his command were about to change history, and it would have been so should they had lit the fuse, but the impossibility at the last minute of removing the Spanish waiters present at the scene, deterred them from pressing the button. During my time in the army, in the General Staff of the No. 3 Montesa Cavalry Regiment in Ceuta, under the command of Colonel Carlos de Meer de Ribera, I had the opportunity to experience my military life in the middle of the confrontation between two factions of the army, represented in its two Lieutenants Colonels; one, Lieutenant Colonel Romero, who was “birds of a feather” with Coronel de Meer, and another, Lieutenant Colonel Arnaiz, probably sent by the intelligence service of the incipient democracy. I had rendered several special services and already made enough merits to be discharged early with honors, but one day, Lieutenant Colonel Arnaiz sent for me and said: - Don’t play dumb, Tucci! I know very well that you know that our Colonel is a bit “facha” (fascist). And what does one say at that moment while in the army?... well, you know... - At your command, my Lieutenant Colonel! Then he added: - You are very skilled and I will not let you escape so easily. You won't leave here without leaving your mark, so start building at once the Regiment scale model! While the scale model was flat, our regiment headquarters was on a steep slope facing the sea, so what I presented was an impossible and costly project, which included molding the slope into plaster, tilting the structure, and lighting up the squadrons, all with the remote and secret hope that they would deny my project, knowing how stingy they were. It backfired and I spent three months with the help of a Valencian soldier who worked in porcelain, recreating the regiment in toilets that had never been put to use in the parade ground. We got it and I was the first of my call-up to be sent back home, taking with me the soldier to whom they only wanted to grant a 15-day leave. That work is still standing today, as I could see 20 years later. In my passage through the Montesa 3 Cavalry Regiment, apart from making some great friends, I taught Karate, I was in two different squadrons, with the fusiliers giving belly flops against the ground, and then in the main

I spent a surreal month of maneuvers in the desert of Almeria, and I directed, in a time of many parades, the squad of “batidores”, that is, the soldiers who, at the traditional military parades, march in front of the regiment. I also made a clay nativity scene that won a military contest and gave me a pleasant week’s leave. The day we presented the regiment scale model, the entire command staff on both sides, offered me to pursue a military career entering the military school, the army itself would paid for my studies. I declined the kind suggest... I’d had enough... A month after my discharge, Ricardo Ramos passed precisely there to meet Colonel de Meer on a "diplomatic" mission, as he would confess to me years later. Although I was discharged from the army, as I remained in the active reserve, Colonel de Meer himself sent for me months later to coordinate the transfer of all his personal stuff when he left his command in Ceuta and returned to his home, in the Salamanca district of Madrid. That same year, 10 months later took place one anecdotal meeting; at that time, I was running the publishing house my family, from the bottom of the Argentine Bookstore, where one day, Colonel of Meer entered; when asked what did he want by one of my mother's employees, Juan Marinero (staunch and proven communist militant), he said: - Please... the owner’s son? To which Juan replied: - Which author? These two individuals had really been made to not understand each other! Once the misunderstanding had been cleared, they sent for me: - There’s a gentleman out there asking for you - said Juan Marinero, in that incomprehensible tone with which he mumbled things. I went up and, what a surprise! Two years had already elapsed and suddenly my Colonel reappears: - At your command, my Colonel! (The army habits are never lost!)

He kindly invited me to a café and during the talk he confessed that he had come to offer me a leading position in a new party he wanted to create. I thanked him heartily for the deference and the fact that he had thought of me, but at that time in my life, the last thing that interested me in this world was politics. I never expressed any political opinion in front of Carlos de Meer, so I was very surprised by his invitation. I never saw him again... today I learned that he died in 2020 at the age of 92. Rest in peace. Ricardo Ramos was for years my mother’s sentimental companion. They traveled together on a sailboat to Greece, and they spent many seasons together listening to opera on top of a mountain range in their "submarine", a Mercedes Benz that he himself had turned into a caravan car. During that time, we often saw each other at barbecues in my house, in long talks about the art of horseback riding and its symbolic and transcendent implications. He did a lot of translations for my publisher. He also took me riding in the army’s Remonta on the Extremadura road, where every week they thanked me for my presence with so many horses and so few riders. Countless were the anecdotes that we lived together in that time, like the day in which we got lost in the hunting ground number 1 taking horses from one place to another in Madrid, thus turning a journey of a single hour into a martyrdom of 9 hours. Devastated, when we were about to arrive, he told me, fixing his clothes: “And now double march! To reach like gentlemen!” His sarcastic humor, his culture, his withdrawal and his life philosophy made him an affectionate companion of talks, and he sought me as much as I welcomed him, because we always enjoyed each other, with detachment, respect for difference and with gentle camaraderie. Last time I saw him he was very sick. - What a sad state you find me in, my friend! – We spent a few hours in silence. Shortly after I left and respected his wish that I would not go back there; he said goodbye with a Farewell!

It was nothing spontaneous, but a search, since we live constantly in the past, present and future; it was something that had always fascinated me and I always wanted to discover: all those why, the what for, the where and toward where of my person...

I started dreaming that one day I’d become a great martial artist. My name is Justo Diéguez and I was born in a small town called Villanueva del Río y Minas, Seville, although it was in Aragon, in a small mining town called Utrillas, that I spent most of my childhood. It was a very special place and it was there that I discovered the hardness and reality of the streets. Being still very young I witnessed some brutal situations and that made me realize that if I wanted to do something with my life I had to escape from there. Fights were frequent and it was no wonder that I got home crying. - “Why don’t you defend yourself?” - my dad told me. - “I do!!!” - was my desperate answer. But in the end I always ended on the floor, curled up in a ball, getting beaten and hugging my head, so when I got home, the best place to vent my frustration was under the kitchen table, where my head turned into a tornado and everything that had happened during the fight was revived. I saw myself on the floor with my hands on my head, and instinctively I began to grab and hit the table legs. After some time that became commonplace and I started to enjoy; I knew that my fetal position and my arms on my head were barriers that protected me from the blows.

That flexibility, articulated to the change of levels thanks to the body’s mechanics and its chameleonic ability for constant change, gives us the ability not only to create a shield around us, but also to use those same tools in the attack.

What was keeping me from opening my eyes? What kept me from doing it? Fear! I was scared and I felt tremendously vulnerable, but one day everything changed. I’d face my fears, my arms on my head would temporarily protect me from the blows. When I opened my eyes and I discovered that these barriers formed some windows from where I could observe what was happening around me while I still could remain protected, and a world opened before me. It seemed like a dream to slow camera, from which woke me up a kick that I received in the back; but it also happened something that changed me for the better and I could open my eyes and see what was happening around me. Anyway, the problem of being scared didn’t change much, I still was afraid of such gratuitous confrontations.

Keysi Flexible and articulated windows I had already discovered that unprotecting myself had consequences and I didn't know how to solve that problem, but what I did know was that if I wanted to be able to move in whatever situation, I had first to learn to observe by using one of the most important tools at my disposal in any situation of risk: my eyes, that is, recognizing the environment and use that perspective. Imagine for a moment that you are at home and you look out the window. I had to learn to look through those windows and not just to look, but also to shut them without remaining unprotected. These windows were the incredible consequence of the holes that form these barriers and that help us to observe from inside our protective shield.

The table: my training center Uncovering the levers Every day, as soon as I'd get home, without thinking twice I would crawl under the table; all my obsession was to analyze every situation and to look for a way to understand what I had done and why it had turned out that way; so I started with my routine from the position on the back to the sitting position, for which I used my natural levers. I rolled on my back/shoulder, arm and hand to make a lever that pushed me to the sitting position. There I could recognize how to turn on my back having as reference the four table legs; my goal on turning was that of putting my legs between one particular table leg (the opponent) and my head. This taught me another lesson I couldn’t ignore: even though I had put my legs between that table leg and my head, actually I was just protecting myself from one opponent. But what about the other three legs (opponents) that were surrounding me? Behind my head there was another leg, and two more on each side of my body, how could I protect myself from several opponents? That was another great finding: when I understood how vulnerable we are and that there is no perfect guard, I began to discover different possibilities and it filled me with curiosity to realize that if I used my arms as a lever while clutching myself to the leg of the table, I could gain a greater impulse to get out or change my position.

So I started to discover that from the position on the back I could not only turn my body and put my legs between an opponent and me, but also use my levers to modify my situation from being lying back to get in the sitting position, or even use the arm lever while grabbing the opponent’s leg so that it gave me extra energy to sit or turn with more energy. Every day I was more motivated, more creative, and this began to grow like a snowball going down the slope. It no longer seemed to bother me having such confrontations. I knew all too well that, later there'd be time for analysis, and between cries and tears, I'd be again under the blessed table, where I usually unloaded my frustration, making the table legs more and more dislodge every day. It was in those days that Thinker (el Pensador) was born, with his barriers and windows, the Garramono, and a wide range of principles that led me to create this map that would guide me, although I didn't know it at the time.

The Thinker, a key to unlock the mind gates The Thinker is the mother of all principles and concepts in this method. The best way to know your body is to penetrate into the interior of yourself and look at it from the deepest part of your being. And yes, it's true, all techniques begin with the Thinker and has nothing to do with the position of our hands nor does it mean that we spend all our time thinking. The Thinker has to do with knowing your body in a different way, as a place where you can only enter with the mind and look from that perspective. Thought is the connection that can get us to the deepest part of our Soul/Spirit. The Spirit is the inner part of the body while the body is the outer part of the Spirit, and our Mind is the connection of both, body and Spirit. They're not different entities, they're just one, and this is what I call the Thinker.

Wanting who you want to be, doesn’t start with the idea of who you want to be or the hope of being that, it starts with the conviction that you already are! One day, walking with my dad, we stopped to talk to a gentleman.at a given moment, this man addressed me and asked: "Do you want to be a miner?" I said no, because I knew there was another world outside of the mines. Then, he said to me: "If you can, study and escape from this hell. If I were your age, with all that I have seen and lived, I would never work in a mine. Now I am too old." That got engraved in my head. Latter I told my dad: "I don't want to waste my life running through the galleries like a rat." He told me: "In this life you can be whatever you want, but everything will depend on your thoughts and your effort to become what you want to be. If you think you are shit, that's how you will see yourself, and that's also how others will see you. If you want to be a King you will have to believe that you are, and that's the way others will see you." And that's how I decided that, whatever happened in my life, I would never give up trying to make my dreams come true.

Question. What do you call difficulties, problems? I call them Experiences! And remember that each experience helps you grow to mature, no matter how adverse the circumstances may seem. When I was 14, I started working in the mines with a crew of kids doing outside carpentry, moving materials and cleaning. We entered the mines two days a week to clean mud in the ditches and draw water from the wells while learning and recognizing the galleries where we were bound to be working one day. The mine is a place enough tough, brutal and difficult for an adult, now can you imagine what it can be for a child? I spent six years in that extreme and violent environment, with violent and ruthless men who lived without fear of being recriminated; and that day, I insist - it was not "Tomorrow" -, I got up like so many other times, and it was not "tomorrow", it was today. I mean that a day like today, and it will not be tomorrow, you will die; it is possible that you are healthy and that day the sun will shine and everything is wonderful. That was the way I felt the day the gallery collapsed, trapping and killing most of my colleagues. I still remember the shocking roar of the earth as it was writhing inside, it was there, in the mines, that I lost many of my good friends, and I guarantee you that before the fatal denouement occurred it is very likely that we had been all talking about next weekend, or the girl we just had met or had a date with ...

Keysi Now ask yourself, do you really think tomorrow exists? That experience told me that it had come the time to stop thinking about tomorrow, it was the moment to start walking my own path and making my dream come true, so without hesitation I took that turn and began to live my own adventure. I had a great task ahead of me to create my destiny and write the book of my life without waiting for tomorrow and that journey begins in oneself, in believing in who you are and not allowing anyone to tell you who you have to be.

A methodology, where you adapt the tools to your person, not your person to the tools The Keysi method is developed within a program with a progressive and continuous Methodology, a mature and evolving daily planning at any of the levels of the structure without improvisations. That's why we must know a series of questions that are the key to its development, guidelines to continue understanding that Keysi is a method of personal growth that uses urban defense as a means to reach a goal. If we want to have an objective reality of what happens on the streets, we have to be aware, not only of our skills but also of our limitations to better understand our response capacity in a risky situation

Human beings are the dominant species due to the ability to adapt and evolve Personal growth is based on belief. Believing is not a goal, is a purpose that takes us to the highest level of personal fulfillment as human beings; a key that your main goal is to open the mind gate, a path to your inner knowledge and the main source of wisdom. We must continue to evolve and grow; This process is the consequence of our instinct as a species, and these are the principles in the Keysi method: developing constant and active skills in the field of learning, this being a place without limits where our emotional state, through the mind, can express your creativity physically, with aptitude / attitude in one of the most incredible, frustrating and disappointing and at the same time enriching exercises that exists: the “shadow”. Why? Because it brings out the worst and the best in you, a personal and internal work where mind, emotions and physicality are combined.

Keysi Predator alert - The shadow During the development of a Predator "the shadow", the person who interprets it acts under great pressure and psychic tension. It's an imaginary combat with one or several adversaries. The recreation of real scenarios and the constant threat of being hit makes this type of training become a very real situation that awakens in the Predator a very superior requirement of selfcontrol. The Predator, during an imaginary combat, recreates the intentions of the opponent or opponents, valuing and instantly processing the situation and the way of acting, hence the importance and demand of this mode of training both physical and psychological. This way of training develops the space-time (Distance), memory (Consciousness), perception, the reasoning of the situation and the ability to find the right moment to provoke, act and react to the opponent's attack, and, very important, the control and distribution of the Force.

The shadow, our body their abilities and weaknesses The body is our physical vehicle; the mind is the thought, the purpose, the driver; the spirit is the attitude, the emotional state of the warrior; all its techniques are developed on a basis, the body mechanics, getting maximum control of the body. The development of body mechanics educates us and gives us the ability to recognize our body and improve our skills, but the best thing is that it discovers us and reveals our non-abilities. This symbiosis teaches us that once we recognize our weaknesses, they cease to be so to become abilities, and that is achieved with attitude and constancy. Only the recognition of that state will provide us with self-realization, and emotional, mental and body expression to reach a much higher instinctual attitude of analysis and recognition of the environment. Using it to our advantage in a risky situation provides us with a greater emphasis on manipulation and destruction of the attacker's limbs either with weapons or empty hand, a radical emphasis and development of your attributes in all areas.

Keysi Inner knowledge, the main source of wisdom I am convinced that there is another field of experimentation that challenges the laws of science and logic, an internal space that frees us from standards, technical barriers and limitations. These limits are what condition our ability to understand that our physical body is a tool, and that to discover our true abilities we have to start by recognizing our small and large weaknesses. Keysi is not a combination of techniques of different styles; it's my perspective and my goal; it's personal growth with urban self-defense as an element of transport and development; a thought based on knowledge, research and experimentation; a way of understanding, developing, expressing and transmitting. It's not a copy of this or that, nor is it a theoretical explanation of different Martial Arts; on the contrary, they are concepts and principles perfectly planned and defined, fruit of a rigorous and long introspective work.

A method of urban growth and self-defense? You’re Crazy!!! Instinctive? Radical? Extreme! Keysi is a radical and extreme change in the vision and understanding of urban crime. I've always believed that a warrior has to be a complete person - Physically, Mentally and Emotionally - so as to reach all areas of a combat in a three-dimensional way, whether in space or time, turning the body into a functional tool in any of those areas. For that I created and developed what we call “Rodamundo”, a body mechanics work that develops our fitness/attitude standing, kneeling, sitting and lying down, linked to the development of space/time, along with long, medium and short distances, as well as hand to hand combat, either with weapons or empty handed. And all this catapulted by the rhythm or ability to move, and knowing how to use the displacements, the rotation, the time and the space in a situation of risk before one or several adversaries. With constancy and with each trial/error, with each joy/frustration, I kept discovering and growing. Everything has a cause/effect consequence and, as a result of all this, it was born this revolutionary method of urban self-defense, a way of understanding the brutal reality of the street. A thought far removed from the usual and traditional, structured to understand the extreme challenge of the greatest predator on earth - the human being -, and realize that in a situation of risk our capacities can collapse and that only an instinctive mind can give a solid and forceful answer. It’s in here that the victim (you-I-he-she) becomes the predator and the aggressor (assailant-offender-criminal) becomes the victim.

that I got frustrated dragging that "Culatón" (big weapon butt, in the mines is the term that defines an apparently bottomless pit with no exit) making me feel lost within my thoughts. But! after touching that bottom, everything seemed to light up in my mind, it was like if everything started to restructure and it was put back in place. However, it didn’t take long for me to realize that what seemed to be in order was just a respite, and I was soon falling into my own trap again. I had a lot of tools and I wanted to use them all, I wanted to be down and up at the same time and I discovered that, if I considered my body a tool, that required a body mechanic to be able to apply that tool in a functional way. For this it was necessary a map, and some anchors that allowed me to surf through that map and connect the different levels in which I had structured this method, the Rodamundo, the body biomechanics designed in seven levels of work: standing crouching - squatting - kneeling - crawling - sitting - lying down. And of course, without leaving aside the development and execution of the technique, the core. The Rodamundo educates your body. It's necessary a totally new kind of education in which we must be prepared to recognize our body at every level, because until you get to recognize your body you will not be able to recognize the opponent. We are born with our body and we will die with it, and this body will do everything we want it to do, even the impossible, without disobeying. You'll be surprised when you discover it. The body is the greatest mystery of all existence, any education that does not teach you the way to cultivate your body, to be considerate of it, to penetrate its mysteries, cannot teach you to open the door of your own conscience. The body is the first door to the cornerstone, the spirit. Wing Chun Kuen: South China Boxing If we understand that Wing Chun is one of the most popular systems in Canton (Guangzhou) and surely one of the best-known Chinese boxing styles, I think the question may be pertinent: Where are then the aspects “Ti”, “Shuai jiao” and “Quin-na”? Although many speak of them it is not common to see these aspects that should be natural in any style of combat. It seems normal that different styles have different characteristics or "specialties".

hat is, there are styles that will show a predilection for fist punches, others for dislocations or projections, and so on. This has always served to define the different strategies within the combat systems (Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, Wing Chun, etc.). But it seems logical to think that any combat style should take into account all the elements related to combat. At the end, as Bruce Lee said, in this world all your adversaries have two arms and two legs and therefore the ways of fighting are not so different. I personally know most of the Wing Chun families around the world. In my travels I was always very interested in how to approach the practice of the different lineages of Wing Chun for logical reasons, but especially because I am firmly convinced that all parties have interesting points that can enrich your own practice.

I see little, to say the least, of these very important technical aspects in Wing Chun Kung Fu. There are very few exceptions from schools that try to introduce some of these elements cited at the beginning of this column, and are also seen as "freaks" and even accused of not being "pure Wing Chun". Don’t tell me it’s not funny... what a contradiction! Yeah, a big inconsistency in itself, because there’s no point in saying something like that, agreeing that in the Hong Kong Wing Chun (the most popular in the world) hardly exist these elements for reasons that I have already exposed in some articles and talks on the Internet (the large differences between the Foshan Wing Chun and Hong Kong Wing Chun are related to the different fighting "ecosystem" that existed in one place and another). There is no fighting style that pretends to be EFFICIENT and does not train and know all the fighting distances and sorts of combat.

From a very young age I was passionate about Chinese boxing. And it has been especially in recent years that I started asking myself the right questions which, in my view, every practitioner of styles of “WuShu/KungFu” should ask himself or herself. Myths are fine as elements to maintain the illusion in children, but living on myths does nothing good to the Martial Arts in today’s world. I have looked at combat styles and listened to hundreds of masters talking about the benefits of the practice of Martial Arts: discipline, selfimprovement, generous heart, kindness, health, etc. I don’t think anyone could argue about the huge benefits of Kung fu practice, but... what if we just looked at Chinese boxing as what it was? that is, for what it was created and developed? As Keji Tokitsu (a renowned Karate historian and creator of a combat system called Jiseido) said a few years ago:

At the beginning of this column I was talking about a fighting song in Foshan that defines what a fighting style, a Chinese boxing system should contain. Since I like Chinese boxing... I will

naturally train them and integrate them into the work already done at a 100%. Because in addition to fireworks (it is becoming more common in Chinese Martial Arts), you have to try to place the Chinese boxing styles where they should always have been. And this, in my opinion, happens to turn the phrase "you are what you train" into a maxim. If we want to integrate boxing, kicking, projections and aggressive grips into the fighting systems we must design the exercises to make all members of a school practice them, integrate them, "trust" them and feel comfortable with their use. Understand the time and distance of each use of each part of the technical arsenal. And that will define our Syllabus for the next two years. I am convinced that by

WingTsun doing the same things we will achieve the same results. If we do not like what turns out to be the "end product" we must modify the focus and maybe retouch the training methods. I decided years ago to try to evolve by METHOD. The same method that allows us the creation of dynamics and exercises to convert what is now only a phrase of the memory in Foshan, into living technique that is used and developed by practitioners of Wing Chun Kung Fu. Krav Maga I.M.A.D.S. by Stéphane Denis Achieving formidable efficiency depends on the intelligence and skill in using the existing tools, regardless of their origins, their provenance. The Krav Maga system understood this very well: • Learning defensive techniques. • Application of defense and training techniques in various scenarios • Mental readiness to achieve the goal. • Psychological preparation to improve self-confidence and free yourself from the elements that can hold you back.

Mental, psychological preparation… Is it essential? In our humble opinion, achieving the set objectives it's a must! To begin this valuable subject devoted to mental and psychological preparation, in general it's vital to obtain their respective definitions. Summarizing

Mental Preparation (MP): Based on standardized tools It's based on mental techniques, that is, standardized tools and techniques that can be transmitted. The techniques have been grouped into different categories with the meaning of their various goals for each. • Concentration techniques (e.g., mental images). • Goal-setting techniques (e.g., working on short-, medium- or long-term goals). • Relaxation techniques (e.g., sophrology). • Cognitive techniques (e.g., changes in negative/positive thinking).

Mental preparation goes through conditioning in order to achieve the goal, a sentence often quoted as “Mental training leads to wisdom!” Psychological Preparation (PP): does not offer standardized tools as such. It aims to allow the psychological balance of the individual in his private, professional, sports life... It focuses on a direct well-being that allows the individual to invest in various fields and to feel better. It uses methods that favor emotional balance and promotes independence. A well-known principle: “He who feels good in his head, feels good in his body.” The military origin of Krav Maga answers the question bluntly: Mental preparation, psychological preparation… Must-haves? Without them, it is absurd to believe in the success of the set goals!! They lead to success, to victory.

Krav Maga For those who love concrete examples, here is an exercise used by military instructors as part of a mental preparation in a Krav Maga class. The exercise presented can be supplemented by several additional phases to make it more complex. The main purpose of this complexity is that of bringing the candidates to the best of their abilities. 1st step: Set up candidates in the work area in a two-row device facing each other at a distance of ten meters. While one row of candidates is active, the other just plays a representational role. It serves only as a visual link point. Step 2: The instructor will tell aloud a story (scenario) in which active candidates will have to project themselves. Depending on their progress, the variable dangerousness, they will have to advance (or retreat) relative to their fixation point. Each candidate will be the main actor in the story.

Scenario: • Interior area (house) • Outside area in front of the house door • Outside area on sidewalk (only on sidewalk) • Outside area on sidewalk (one person on sidewalk, potential threat)

• Outside area on sidewalk (one person on sidewalk, threat is real and active) REM: In the jargon of security and law enforcement, color codes are not uncommon to represent different levels of threats. The Instructor should take the utmost care to prepare their scenarios depending on the type of audience to train. During each step taken according to the scenario, the candidates will adapt their awakening attitudes. Through training in this type of exercises, candidates will get to know each other personally and develop their strengths through the acquisition of benchmarks. The basic version of this exercise offers the possibility of adding other elements to bring the student further in his preparation. A few examples: • On each step, use a specific drill • Use of Personal Equipment (armed personnel)

“An individual without a benchmark is a lost individual” This exercise is certainly beneficial for practicing candidates but it is also an indispensable source of information for the instructor. Indeed, it will make it possible to analyze behaviors and capture the emotions generated. They are valuable and important indicators for the instructor to consider. During training some will be serene, unsettled, lost, embarrassed, tired… others will stop even before the end of the exercise. It is essential when setting up this type of exercise, that the evolution of the difficulty is carefully and professionally controlled in order to guarantee a qualitative result. The race to complexity can be harmful. One of the consequences regularly observed during neglected implementation is an increased risk of abandonment. Abandonment which is either temporary or permanent.

Krav Maga “If the student is to learn from the instructor, the instructor must learn from the student.” While, on a general basis, most candidates will be able to be positively corrected, referred and advised fairly quickly, for some it will be otherwise. It will be useful in these cases to deepen the past and the background of those involved.

“Instructor... creator of the proper atmosphere” In some cases, the student who trusts his instructor, will give himself over his feelings, his experiences. Exchanges will be possible. For others, referral to a health professional will be invaluable. Student, instructor, mental coach, psychologist… Teamwork is essential when it comes to success!

Muay Thai The deep meaning of Combat Muay Boran Form “A Form is a book that is read with the body” Kenwa Mabuni (1889-1952)

The thai word rai ram, ร่า ย รำ means to dance. In Siamese armed or unarmed martial arts this same word has a broader meaning: in fact, it refers to a sequence of prearranged offensive and defensive movements that a martial artist executes solo or with a partner. This practice is of paramount importance for a practitioner who wants to reach the core of the martial art of his choice. The essence of oriental fighting systems are often embedded into prearranged sets: however, the vital information that the creator of a sequence includes in its work is always encrypted and without possessing the key, the secrets of a form will remain concealed for the average martial artist. In order to better understand the concept of prearranged fighting sets, the first element to be clarified is the reason why forms are created by knowledgeable

martial arts masters. According to Muay Thai master Chaisawat Tienviboon martial dancing exists in the fighting arts of every nation: the main reason for this is the need to pr eser ve combat strategies, tactics and techniques for future generations of practitioners. Every Master considers the combat principles he has learned and tested something very precious, worth of being preserved and kept secr et until he meets the right students that could inherit his art. For this reason, the various offensive and defensive maneuvers are coherently organised in a set of movements that can be rehearsed over and over again. All trainee can experiment on their own thus developing the right body mechanics connected to their fighting system. owever, only the master who created the sequence will hold the key to fully understand the combative principles hidden in his form: the various applications of each position of the martial dance, without his explanations, will have no fighting meaning and the Rai Ram will be just that, a beautiful dance. Some students will simply have no patience and, without understanding the high value of forms training, will discard this practice as being useless for combat. This is a big mistake since a daily practice of fighting sequences bring a tangible enhancement of a martial artist’s technical and physical attributes. Solo forms training and the practice of combat applications with a partner are two sides of the same coin. Solo training (image 1) builds the correct body mechanics needed to execute each step, parry, dodge, single attack or combination with speed, grace, force, balance, coordination. Partner training is vital to develop a

Muay Thai sense of distance from the opponent and a good timing, both crucial attributes to apply the techniques included in the form. The sparring partner can also wear mitts and other protective equipment in order to allow the executor to unleash his full power on the target: impact training is the best way to enhance the force of all the attacking techniques that are included in a given form.

Combat Muay Boran form The sequence is composed of 81 movements, each one with more than a single “combative meaning”. The fighting techniques (postures) included in this set belong to Chern Muay style: in fact, they stress the aggressive use of the nine body weapons (Nawarthawoot) to punch, kick, knee, elbow, head-butt, throw, overlay, catch, break. Moreover, the basics of all the traditional defensive systems are included

in the form. Many of the fighting principles included in this form come from the three main regional styles of Muay: Korat, Lopburi, Chaiya. The techniques trained and emphasized by each style reflect the essence of that style: the Combat Muay Boran martial system is based on realistic, practical, powerful applications of the ancient Siamese combat strategies.

Some of the technical features of the Combat Muay Boran sequence are as follows Combinations of strikes. Several combinations of strikes executed with the same weapon or with different body weapons are included. The concept of striking combinations is fundamental in Combat Muay Boran: in fact, the best way to successfully reach an opponent’s weak spots is by combinations of strikes (Phasom Muay). The way strikes are combined makes the difference between an expert fighter and a novice: the best fighters deliver blows in series, strikes are linked in a natural manner, flowing smoothly one after the other. This form teaches the trainee to “think in combinations” instead of getting into the habit of throwing one strike and then wait and see what happens. Defense against multiple attacks. Also the ability to block and counter multiple attacks is considered vital in order to develop realistic combative instincts. The first attack may be the beginning of a series of two or more blows. Being formatted to care about the first stroke only can lead to dangerous

habits. Far from being a stylized sequence of non-sense gestures this form prepares those who train it seriously for the harsh reality of combat, creating sound combative reflexes. Grappling techniques. Muay Thai is the art of attacking and defending with the use of nine body weapons (hands, legs, knees, elbows and head). However, a part of the ancient art of thai grappling (Muay Pram) has always being included in every thai boxer’s arsenal. Ancient Muay (Muay Boran) was rich in holding, throwing and joint locking techniques: the Combat Muay Boran form includes some of those powerful maneuvers. By working this form, multiskilled fighters will be created, midway between pure strikers and pure grapplers.

How to train the Combat Muay Boran form Step 1: memorize the correct sequence. Hundreds of slow executions of the entire form are needed at this stage of the lear ning process. The goal is to perform the whole set without conscious effort, i.e., without stopping to think: what’s next? This stage can take a few months to a year, according to the level of proficiency of the trainee. Step 2: divide the sequence into blocks of techniques and work each block separately. In order to really possess the form, every Combat Muay Boran student must go through this stage. This breakdown can be easily done because this form is conceived to be split if need be, without losing its fighting rationale. Then, the shorter portions of the sequence must be dissected, analysed and learned until

Muay Thai becoming second nature. This is the most important part of the learning process that should be undertaken with the careful supervision of an expert Combat Muay Boran teacher. Step 3: work on the martial applications of each posture, with a sparring partner and with a pad man. Timing, sense of distance, tactile sensitivity and a better understanding of the fighting principles of each technique’s applications are developed with the cooperation of a sparring partner. A pad man is needed to express and enhance the real power of each offensive maneuver learned through solo practice of the sequence. Step 4: rehearse the whole sequence or the shorter blocks at real speed for a scheduled number of times. At this stage the sense of enemy (the ability to visualize an opponent) must already be well developed and every offensive or defensive maneuver should express high battle energy (Phalang Yuth). Fighting and dancing finally become a single artistic and potentially destructive form of expression. A form is a compendium of fighting techniques, a smart system of preservation and transmission of battle-tested martial strategies and tactics: however, for a sincere and dedicated practitioner a form represents an infinite source of stimuli that reveals its facets in ever changing ways. In fact, just like a good book that seems to “change”

Muay Thai according to the mood of the reader, a combat form adapts to the executor giving him a different feeling each time he performs it. In the words of Master Mabuni: “A form is not fixed or immoveable. Like water, it's ever changing and fits itself to the shape of the vessel containing it.” Because of this, practicing the Combat Muay Boran form with the right spirit on a daily basis, nourishes the body and mind of a Nak Muay with the right technical and spiritual “food”. Some can be good shooters but bad fighters and it's preferable to develop the fighting spirit, not only teaching how to be good shooters, but also to handle aggressive situations to face reality and violence. To achieve these principles, acting with determination and confidence is essential. When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. So, is the ethnicity of the Te a c h e r, a s i t r e l a t e s t o a Martial Art, an important consideration? Should it be a valid concern in the assessment of their ability and their qualifications? Or does it reveal the presence of worn-out stereotypes, myopic thinking, ignorance and the attributing of importance to superficial appearances? After all, if one decided to learn the French language, would it be wrong to look for a teacher who was Fr ench? Or if one wanted to learn Italian g a s t r o n o m y, wouldn’t it be smart to intern under a renowned Italian Chef (and possibly attend culinar y school in Italy)? Isn’t that simply going back to the source?

hese analogies make sense and can be used to justify a positive bias toward choosing an “ethnic” Martial Arts teacher. But, surprisingly, as in most cases, the answer is not so simple or clearcut because, to be relevant, ethnicity must be inextricably connected with other elements essential to the teaching of a Martial Art: Lineage and Authenticity. What that means is that in many cases the “ethnic” Teacher has learned directly from the Founder (or one of his firstgeneration students) and has grown-up in the Art’s country of origin, immersed in its culture, traditions and philosophy. Therefore, in those cases, choosing a teacher based on their ethnicity is simply the result of the quest for the most authentic transmission of the Art and the most impeccable Lineage, and not because of ignorant bias or misguided perception. But what about Western teachers who have also studied directly under a Founder, or have done internship in the Art’s country of origin under a senior Master of proven Lineage? Shouldn’t they be considered on par with the “ethnic” teachers? This is why we must tread carefully, because the line separating ignorant bias from wise discernment can often be faint and blurred, and motives can be misinterpreted. During my long and adventurous Martial Arts journey, I have had numerous occasions where those questions became extremely relevant, carrying potentially far reaching consequences on my development and my career. The following examples presented here, covering different Arts, will also demonstrate (once again) the Yin and Yang quality of this interesting subject. When I first became involved in Hapkido studies, the Founder, Grandmaster Choi Yong Sool, had already passes away in 1986, so I researched several prominent Hapkido Instructors (there were just a few at that time). In addition to the obvious qualities, my choice, by necessity, also had to take into account logistics, financial requirements, accessibility and, importantly, the teacher’s willingness to work with me. Interestingly, my choice fell on an American Teacher: Grandmaster Michael Wollmershauser. Ethnicity, this time, was not a consideration because Lineage and Authenticity were true and documented. “GM Mike” (as he was affectionately known) had studied briefly with the Founder of Hapkido and, at length, with Grandmaster Jung Hwan Park, one of the Founder’ students. Later, I had other Hapkido Teachers and they all happen to be Korean. But they were not

selected because of their ethnicity, but because they were all supremely talented, first-generation students of the Founder. Early on in the expansion of our Hapkido organization, I decided that I wanted to encourage our students to cross-train in other aspects of self-defense such as weapons training. I was not interested in any of the “Kobudo” weapons of Japan and Okinawa, or in other traditional Korean or Chinese weapons; I wanted practical and accessible weapons that could be used in today’s world. The answer, I believed, was to be found in the Filipino Martial Arts. In this case, I decided to go back to the source to find one of the most respected teachers of Filipino stick and knife at that time. That Teacher was, of course, Prof. Remy Presas, the Founder of Modern Arnis. Was his ethnicity relevant in my decision? Honestly, yes. I am convinced that when it comes to this specific area, Filipino teachers are the best on the planet. Maybe it is because they learn weapons first (before empty-hands techniques); or it could be for the fact that in their culture sticks and knives are handled, respected, understood and practiced constantly and from a very early age. After the untimely passing of Prof. Presas, I met and trained with other great Filipino Teachers, (including, briefly, his late brother, Ernesto Presas), such as Bobby Taboada, Baltazar and Mike Sayoc, Richard Bustillo and the incomparable Dan Inosanto. Was it because there were no gifted American Instructors who were extremely skilled, awesome teachers of Filipino Martial Arts? All you have to do is to spend one hour training with Graciela Casillas, Hock Hochheim or Burton Richardson, (to name just three!), to know that is not the case. There are several excellent Stick & Knife (aka Arnis, Kali, Escrima, etc..) Teachers that are not Filipino. I simply chose to go back to the source of the Arts. To that end, I have also formed a strong bond as well as a working alliance with one of today’s most talented, dynamic, and personable Filipino Instructors in the country: Master Julius Melegrito. He has embraced the study of Combat Hapkido (also teaching it at his school), and I have appointed him Director of Stick & Knife Training for our organization, the ICHF. This successful arrangement, and our close friendship, has benefited all of our students. Another case where initially ethnicity played a significant role in my decision, was during my search for a formidable Ground Fighting Instructor to teach ground techniques to our students and Instructors.

The Art of Hapkido is weak in that area of self-defense and my skills fairly limited. I knew several respected Teachers of Judo, Sambo and other grappling systems, but again, convinced that Brazilian instructors are the absolute best in this area, I decided to go back to the source, and was very fortunate to meet and become friend with a great teacher and a real champion of Brazilian JiuJitsu: Carlson Gracie, Jr. For several years he taught our students Ground Fighting techniques and we often traveled together doing seminars, including to Finland and Panama. Our schedules and career obligations eventually diverged, but we are still friends. Incidentally, I also had the honor of becoming a friend of his late father, a legendary BJJ pioneer and a truly humble gentleman: Carlson Gracie, Sr. I still have fond memories of spending time with him listening to audiocassettes of old Italian songs of which he was a big fan. Later on, for my next Director of Ground Survival (our name for the program), I decided to recruit “in-house” and I appointed one of our most skilled instructors, Master David Rivas, to that position. This time ethnicity was not a factor. Although David has trained with several prominent Brazilian teachers, he has developed his own style of ground self-defense that compliments and blends well with our Combat Hapkido curriculum. Sometimes it is smart and necessary to actually create your own new source. My Aikido Teacher, the late Fumio Toyoda Sensei, was another case where ethnicity was a relevant and important (although not the exclusive) consideration. I intentionally selected a Japanese instructor who had studied in Japan under the Founder, Morihei Ueshiba, and was following the most authentic traditions of the Art. When I decided to undertake the study of Aikido (strictly for my personal growth and Martial education, and NOT to become a Teacher of that Art), I chose a Teacher who could share with me, in addition to the technical skills, the most authentic cultural and philosophical aspect of Aikido.

Finally, in this last example, I will demonstrate that the option of selecting a Teacher based, even partially, on ethnicity is not always available or even necessary, as was the case with my learning experience in JKD. After some research and exposure to the System, I decided to pursue proficiency and certification under the well-known American Instructor Paul Vunak, who is second generation removed from the Founder, Bruce Lee. Although, over the years, I had attended several training seminars taught by great JKD teachers such as Francis Fong, and first generation instructors such as Tim Takett, and the late Larry Harsell, Ted Wong and Richard Bustillo, I ultimately decided to train with Sifu Vunak because of his awesome fighting skills, his eclectic approach, and his accessibility. Judging by all the preceding examples, there appears to be no consistency in my choices as they relate to my teachers’ ethnicity. So, what is the final verdict? Should ethnicity be a deciding factor when choosing a Martial Arts Instructor? I don’t believe so. Lineage and Authenticity (in addition to great skills, of course,) are more important factors. In fact, if someone was to ask me to recommend a Ninjutsu teacher I would enthusiastically refer them to my good friend Stephen K. Hayes, an American who has had the unique honor and privilege to be accepted as a personal student and the sole American disciple of Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, the 34th Grandmaster of Togakure ryu Ninjutsu, and has studied in Japan for many years. Impeccable Lineage, Authenticity AND technical knowledge make his ethnicity irrelevant. But, as I pointed out earlier, sometimes those considerations converge, as in the following example: if I decided to pursue the study of WingChun I would, without hesitation, reach out to another friend, Grandmaster Samuel Kwok; but my decision would only in small part be based on his Chinese ethnicity. My most important consideration would be the fact that he had learned the Art from Grandmasters Ip Chun and Ip Ching, the sons of the legendary Ip Man. Exceptional competence, Lineage and Authenticity, complimented by ethnicity; it does not get any better than that.

In some cases, particular Martial Arts are so strongly identified with their ethnic origin they become virtually inseparable from their historical Lineage and Authenticity. It would then be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to ignore the ethnic consideration. One perfect example of that is the group of Israeli Martial Arts, the most popular of them being Krav Maga, but also including other lesser known, eclectic self-defense systems such as Kapap, Hisardut, Haganah, Skornik, Kavanah and Kalah. Given the fact that most of those styles had their genesis in various Israeli elite military branches, it follows that the best teachers are those with a proven (and documented!) Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) background. So, if I was asked to make a recommendation, I would refer the interested party to Grandmaster Neil Farber, Founder of the Federation of Israeli Martial Arts (FIMA), with a vast international network of renowned experts and legitimately certified instructors in many countries. In this case, going back to the (ethnic) source of the Arts would seem a very smart and plausible approach. As a final comment in this presentation examining the relevancy of a Martial Arts teacher’s ethnicity, I will mention that there has always been another interesting way Martial Artists everywhere have used to learn about the ethnic roots and the Lineage and Authenticity of their chosen Art and that was by visiting the birthplace of that particular Art and experiencing its original culture. Is there a Muay Thai practitioner who has not hoped of training in Thailand? Is there a Kung Fu enthusiast who has not dreamed of visiting the Shaolin Temple? Is there a Karate student who would not want to travel to Japan? Or a Taekwondo instructor who would not be interested in touring the Kukkiwon? For many, unfortunately, that journey back to the source of their Art will remain unattainable because of the high costs or other obligations. But those of us who have been able to invest the funds, time and effort to make it happen, have been rewarded with unforgettable memories. Visiting the land where your chosen Art was born and evolved is emotionally gratifying, culturally enriching, and, on a practical level, very educational. Citing my own personal experience (having visited Korea seven times and Okinawa once), I can attest that those journeys have been exciting, rewarding and have significantly contributed to my growth as a Martial Arts Teacher. Ultimately, while the ethnic origin of a Martial Art is always worth exploring, the ethnicity of the teachers is much less important than their knowledge and skills, supported by impeccable Lineage and Authenticity. Sometimes all those elements will converge in a special and unique way; but, at other times, you will have to decide what is valuable and what is irrelevant, and a wise way to discover that is by going back to the source.

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. Jeet Kune Do Guard Guard in martial arts and combat sports is essential. It comes in different forms depending on the discipline practiced, speed, strategy, traps set for the opponent, etc. In the street, the guard is often completely different from that adopted in the clubs and during the sporting practice. In particular, it must be invisible and then evolve during the aggression. It’s impossible to escape the physical confrontation if one puts on a guard of some kind learned in indoor training. How else do you negotiate with the mugger and pretend you don't want to fight if you put yourself in a position to fight? The guard remains of course the signal for the start of a fight after the salute made in competition or in the dojos. So the guard must be invisible in order to remain neutral and especially not to appear aggressive and eager to fight. To be invisible, it must look like a mundane position such as a position of "submission" showing the fear generated by the current situation. Indeed, the fear must be visible in our attitude (posture, on our face ...) in order to reassure the mugger on the domination he exercises over us and on the total control of the aggression that he is in the process of commit.

Jeet Kune Do ur attitude is reflected in our posture in a defensive position, a curled up position like the position of the fetus, and not straight and sure of ourselves. On the other hand, this fear should be read on our face with strained features and not be detached and arrogant. Arrogance and a confident demeanor will almost certainly lead to physical confrontation. The mugger often seeks to feel domination and submission over his prey due to the fear generated. Often if we give an abuser what they are trying to achieve through our physically expressed fear, the abuse will not happen or will be less violent. Indeed, the fear expressed, giving an almighty feeling to the mugger, will produce a relaxation of the latter in his guard and his ability to respond effectively because he will relax his attention by treating his victim with disdain. Dominance produces a feeling of superiority which is a great asset to the victim. The victim may then be able to defend themselves or run away without the mugger suspecting anything. Of course, this is not very warlike, but it must be taken into consideration that the mugger is mentally ready to strike and hurt while the honest citizen is not physically prepared and does not have the psychological weapons to cope to this violence. Indeed, the mugger is used to and prepares himself for these situations of aggression and violence every day, while the ordinary citizen is in internal and external peace with the rest of the population. The time it takes for the victim of an aggression to transform into a "warrior" will cost him the "victory" or more precisely a greater or lesser amount of damage, see his life. Let us not forget that when a victim of assault engages in the fight to defend themselves, they must be able to follow through on their commitment to save their life. To save time, it is therefore essential to find tricks in order to be able to respond effectively to the mugger.

The easiest way to do this is initially to give him the impression of managing the aggression effectively, thus giving the victim time to analyze the situation and find solutions either of escape, negotiation or to find solutions. vital targets opened if the clash became physical. However, it remains very dangerous because if a knife attack occurred unexpectedly, we would then be

cut on vital areas, preventing us from any seizures or ability to close the hand in the event of a cut of a tendon or causing progressive loss of consciousness and strength in the event of a cut in an artery or vein. In addition, in the event of liquid being projected towards our eyes, we would be unable to protect ourselves effectively because the palm of the hand is much better able to protect our eyes than the back of our hand, which is less flexible and manageable to protect itself. Our guard is also reinforced by the position of our fingers that we must absolutely protect. Our fingers should not be stretched out but on the contrary bent towards our throat. This will protect our fingers in the event of a cut and only the back of our hand will be cut off. The back of the hand is harder, wider and thicker than a finger, which can be cut quickly. On the other hand, our guard must remain mobile in order to allow us to cover attacks that could come from all sides. Let's not forget that assault on the street is not a competition. Therefore, the number of fighters is not "one on one" as in sport, but can be "one against many".

In addition, we must forget the “clichés” conveyed in action films, in which the muggers take turns attacking or hinder each other during attacks. Muggers are used to "working" together, so they are very organized and pounce like a pack of wolves at their prey. So don't expect to block all hits and not be hit by your muggers. The important thing is to have a mobile and invisible guard. This will require speaking while moving slightly in order to constantly open the visual field to see if there are ways to escape or if other muggers are coming or trying to hit us. Secondary muggers often come from behind and take advantage of the tunnel effect during an assault. We only see the one who attacks us, but we fail to look around to identify other potential dangers. In order to speak while moving and waving the arms in a neutral way, the best attitude to adopt is that of the Mediterranean people. Indeed, when they speak, they express all their words with gestures that transcribe and support their words. This natural attitude will not arouse the suspicions of the muggers; in fact, they will be less suspicious than if one stands

guard like a boxer or practicing martial arts or combat sports. The guard which seems essential must therefore be adapted in a real situation and not be identical to that learned during our training indoors. Indeed, let us never forget that an assault is by definition sudden and lightning. Sometimes we won't even have time to talk or to stand guard. You must therefore lear n to observe discreetly around you in order to detect possible dangers and threats.

This will allow us to leave or change our position so that we can protect ourselves in the event of an attack. The basic rule is to avoid flight as long as possible. Always try to dialogue as long as possible, even if it means refusing the fight if that is also possible. Better to be alive and taken for a coward than dead as a hero. Our life is our most precious asset and we must protect it by all the means available to us. The animal world shows well this survival instinct which consists of fleeing rather than staying to fight, thus putting one's life in danger.

“Larga Mano” (Long Hand) simply means long-distance combat, a method that teaches you to stay away from your opponent and hurt him without even entering the hand-to-hand distance. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula. When the Philippine Arnis spread in the West, to distinguish it from Fencing, it was called "the living hand fencing", because the hand that did not hold the weapon, actively collaborated in the actions of defense and offense. Thus, the difference between the two systems, the East and the West, is that in Olympic fencing, the unarmed hand is kept safe and used at most to balance the impulse in assaults; in Arnis the unarmed hand is alive and active. Quite often, at dawn, when I finish some pending work, I like to listen to the all-time good music of. Someone will ask me: “And what is the all-time good music?” Well, that’s something that certainly depends on everyone’s opinion. That is, good music is the melody that is capable of transcending generations, times, fashions… within each one of us! In other words, It’s something individual, since each person contemplates good music from his or her own point of view. An old philosophy professor used to say that “something good” is what we carry inside, and that is important to us.

Bugei ow, “important” is an adjective that is attributed to something significant as well as to someone who deserves recognition for a specific fact. In general terms, it defines the quality of what is relevant, which has a lot of value for its qualities, that is, what is important. So, what is important to you right now? Have you already thought about that? The pandemic has asked us this question and many still don’t know what to answer. This is because there is “much” of a lot. That is, we are in a world full of distractions and noises. There is so much “stuff” that we no longer know what really matters. Okay, let’s start with the little things. Now think that, in life, according to the mental form of each person, there are two ways to conceive what is important: at the individual level and at the collective level. This means that it depends on how the outside world is reflected in our inner world. We are not referring to common appearances, or to what is presented through fashions and trend networks. What we are talking about here is the substance lived through in the facts, and not about programmed ideas. Therefore, we must ask ourselves a first question: what for do I need this or that in my life? As you can see, here we put the question individually, not collectively. The reason? It's simple, there are things that are important on a collective level and others

that are important for our individual lives. However, the one who is left alone with your own thoughts at the end of the day is you. On the other hand, both things correspond to two levels of evolution and are a consequence of the mental form and the laws that govern both the life a person who is more lucid, as well as that of the person who is still asleep. This leads us to think that, between dreams and lucidity - if it can be said like this -, we all live in a state of transformation, but each one thinks and acts individually, in a unique way. Imagine that, faced with an unexpected incident (let us put it as an example of experimentation), especially one of those events that bring irreparable losses, the only thing

that man can do is reorganize himself if he is to solve the consequences that the event has generated. Someone will say: “I don't understand!” It is simple, if you are facing an earthquake, tsunami, etc., in that precise moment of helplessness, your action is creating a void within you because you are trying to adjust the moment with your actions, and these refer to a pattern. The point is that your action is in accordance with an already programmed pattern, created by you or by someone else, whose sustainability, in the face of a problem such as the one mentioned above, tends not to be real. All this happens because internally we are not organized. Mentally you want to act a certain way, but emotionally, that is not your goal, and hence the conflict. Let's see:

Bugei once upon a time, there was a scientist who lived concerned about the world's problems, and he was determined to find ways to improve it. He spent days and days in his lab looking for answers. One day his seven-year-old son invaded his shrine to help his father. Of course, the scientist didn't want to be interrupted in his work, so he tried to encourage his son to go play outside instead of staying there, getting in the way and interfering with him. But the boy was persistent, and his father just had to find a way to entertain him in the lab. Then, seeing a map of the world depicted on the page of a magazine, he had an idea; he cut the page containing the map into several pieces and then presented the challenge to his son: - Son, you're going to help me fix the world! Here is the world, as you can see, everything is broken. And you're going to fix it so that it's okay again! When you're done, give me a call, okay? The scientist was convinced that the boy would take days to solve the puzzle that he had prepared for him. But surprisingly, a few hours later, his son called him:

The father didn't want to believe what his son was telling him; he was convinced that it was impossible for a child of that age being able to put together a puzzle of a picture that he had never seen before. Therefore, he simply raised his eyes from his calculations to see his son’s work, which, he thought, couldn’t be nothing more than nonsense worthy of a child of that age. But when he saw the map completely assembled, without no mistakes, he asked his son how he had achieved it without having seen a map of the world before. - Dad, I didn't know what the world was like, but when you took the paper out of the magazine to cut out, I could see that on the other side of the page there was the figure of a man. Later, when you gave me the world to fix, I tried, but I couldn't arrange it. Then I remembered the man,

turned over the pieces of paper, and began to fix the man who I knew what he was like. When I got the man fixed, I turned the page and saw that he had fixed the world. For me it is a real pleasure to leave you with Shidoshi Joao Paulo. In the transition of the many events that have affected the world in 2020, and whose repercussions continue to invade the year 2021, I find it necessary to take stock of the situation and reflect on how the world will be after the end of the pandemic; what the “new normality” will be like, according to the newspapers and news portals.

That new normality will also estate itself in the Martial Arts scene, since, on the negative side, it suffered from the impacts of the pandemic with the postponement of plans, the closing of training halls and the loss of masters and students brought about by the illness, whether by confinement or death, in addition to the consequences at the psychological, sociological and economic levels as a whole. However, when looking at the "positive" side of this period, an important point must be highlighted: the adaptation of students and masters to a new language in Martial Arts teaching, using new technologies. Another interesting aspect that could be observed in this period is

Bugei the reference to the new types of people who, due to social isolation, did manage to discover new masters and schools, thus finding aspects of the martial world that the daily pre-pandemic routine sometimes wouldn't allow. Advances in technology have allowed people with interesting stories, and often compelling realities, to interconnect in various parts of the world. From the point of view of the transmission of knowledge, it is truly amazing that there is the possibility of interacting at the same time with people from different continents, each one living their own reality. The adaptation of face-to-face activities to videoconference performances allowed us to observe Martial Arts with a new look. The pause in external activities - Yang (represented in this context by martial activities) caused a focus shift towards more introspective activities - Yin, directed at internal knowledge, receptivity of information, self-observation.

The term adaptation has always been a constant in the field of Martial Arts and also in the Shizen world, since the peoples of this culture, that handed out their knowledge from generation to generation, are known for their extraordinary ability to adapt to the greatest adversities and the most unlikely scenarios, using various types of strategies to survive in harsh circumstances. These strategies, which in our school appear through the Zue, the Den and the technical peculiarities present in each of the disciplines that we study in the technical background of the Shizen culture, allow us to understand not only how ancient thought developed to face adverse situations, both expected and unexpected, but also the way in which these strategic principles can help us face the various daily setbacks. The Zue (図会), for example, are sets of technical compilations taught by the masters, who had their thinking adapted to the various situations to which the Shizen might be exposed. The Den (伝) translated as “tradition, legacy”, indicate specific techniques that were transferred from generation to generation, as a way of preserving the culture. The two terms can indicate the signature (martial, cultural, etc.) that

identifies a certain school, a master and the historical legacy that makes a school present as an institution that carries and spreads traditional knowledge. We see that the historical moment that we lived throughout the year 2020, to a greater or lesser degree, resembles the level of challenge, survival and, why not, opportunities, of the Japanese migrations at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century. These migratory movements brought Japanese citizens to the Americas, especially to Brazil, where they came to help in agricultural activities, basically in the coffee culture, in the states of São Paulo and Paraná. Upon arrival, many of these immigrants had to face numerous difficulties to survive in a foreign land, among other things because the trade they exerted in their homeland was often not the same as the job they were assigned to, here in Brazil. Over time, many Japanese were able to leave behind the agricultural work and pursue other trades. In this sense, a new problem arose before them: to leave the colonies where the native language was spoken and the culture of Japan was lived, and to enter a new culture with a different language and customs. That was the challenge that many masters in the context of Martial Arts had to face in order to transmit their knowledge. Such masters had to be understood in a language other than the one in which they had been brought up, with different customs on the part of the students. In addition, often, and due to the teaching methods that existed at that time, the knowledge was only partially transmitted by the masters and, consequently, partially absorbed by the practitioners. However, as the phrase attributed to Plato says, “Necessity is the mother of invention”; that is, such challenges forced masters to look for new ways of reorganizing the knowledge they had to teach, and so, what previously was limited to just the repetition of movements (due to the particularities inherent to the time), started to be treated in greater depth, with the contribution of new study materials (compendiums in the fields of anatomy, physiology, engineering, physics, etc.) and enriched with high values in the positive construction of the teacher-student relationship. Thus, historical, sociological, anthropological and cultural elements could be added to ancient knowledge. This broadening of the scope of the vision, coupled with the knowledge that was part of the inner circles of traditional schools, brought a new vision of martial traditions. The temporal evolution (with opportunities and challenges) also brought new tools and methods, which allowed us to review, restructure and, above all, deepen our knowledge of the traditional arts.

However, it is necessary to highlight the level of attention, the alertness, the care that must be taken when choosing to follow the martial path, because in the same way that there are very serious teachers who represent the succession line of a traditional school, there are also those who take advantage of partially acquired knowledge and, with no authorization, irresponsibly and dangerously disseminate their scarce knowledge to other people. That is why it's extremely important knowing the origins of the school being studied, of the master who imparts the teaching and the

legacy that he brings with him, because today the Inter net present itself as a dangerous place for malicious people with little experience, and with the background that only a traditional school and the correct master-student relationship can bring about. For example, in the Shizen culture we have, at the Den level in Jujutsu, an element of the tradition called “Ichi no Den” (ーの伝), which could simply be misinterpreted (from the literal translation of its kanji) as the “legacy of the one” or “the first legacy”, without adding the adequate explanation about the origins of this Den. The student who is really part of a traditional school and who seeks knowledge with correction, finds in the master the conditions to understand that the nomenclature used has cultural, social and anthropological motivations that define that Den, that tradition, in addition to the demonstrations of the movements that make it up.

Bugei In this specific case, in the “Ichi no Den” (ーの伝), on a deeper level, we find that the reference to “Ichi” has been used to identify the Japanese ideogram related to the number one (ー, which is represented by a horizontal straight line), but in this case it is used to identify the pushing move in Jujutsu which is made horizontally by the arms, using them at full extension, to hit the opponent, for example, and deconstruct the part of his trunk at the height of the ribs, breaking them, and then, in a second movement (also represented in the drawing of number one in Japanese, ー), disarm him (the opponent could carry a sword, for example). To these explanations, the teacher, who possesses the knowledge, adds the pertinent explanations to the historical and cultural part of the movement, to the points of efficiency at the postural and physiological level that it must reach in front of the adversary, and to many other points that are transmitted at specific times to students, insofar as they are prepared to receive such knowledge. Therefore, it is not only about the

correct transmission of knowledge, but also about training; it is something that is part of the qualities of a traditional school master. Constant care with the teaching methodology, language, examples and references ensure that the teacher has the necessary tools at all times to satisfy the wishes of his students. Of course, all these qualities are only possible for the student who also proves to be worthy of the knowledge, otherwise there is an imbalance in the teacher-student relationship which generally ends up creating a negative atmosphere. It is also up to the student to ensure the good working conditions of his master, and never put him in compromising situations. The student must be transparent, responsible, diligent and mainly grateful, not only to the master, but above all, to what the master represents for tradition.

The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. In this new work, Olivier Pierfederici shows the difference between real Close-Combat and Self-Defense, something that is not always too clear.
