Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 507 – Novembre – 2024
In a street fight the confrontation almost always takes place at close range, Trapping, the most dangerous and effective distance in combat, where we fight body to body and there is constant contact between our arms and those of our opponent. In the OLIVA Combat System (O.C.S.), the movements are fluid, not prescribed and the position of the legs is constantly changing freely. The objective is to confront and overcome all the difficulties and obstacles that we may encounter in our line of attack by combining elements such as LapSao, Pak-Sao, Gunting, Hubad, chain punches, elbow strikes, knee strikes, headbutts, eye strikes and the development of Chi-Sao and Lap-Sao sensitivity exercises.... Combat Trapping is an effective combat system, aimed at law enforcement officers, but also adapted to civilian use. The techniques, based on simplicity and logic, result in a simple and effective defense strategy. O.C.S. is a professional system in constant development, focused on pure and hard street combat. This system teaches us to deal with stress, to learn to control situations under great psychological pressure. Never forget that self-defense must be functional, simple and effective. The goal is survival, so be direct, attack with vigor and be as effective as possible, and always remember rule number 1: “In the street there are no rules”.

A Milongas Milongas
rgentine popular music is beautiful and varied, and the milonga is one of its best known forms; but another meaning of this word is that of deception, story, lie?
I have always been attracted to buzzwords, those “sounding good” and that are repeated in the general discourse in a repetitive way, until they are worn out and become a linguistic absurdity, in such a way that they are added to every phrase or sentence, even without sense, just to look good and be more modern.
One of these omnipresent words today is “sustainable”. They pretend with its use to wield the impossible idea that something can be maintained without affecting in any way, in its use or production, the natural balance and the environment. Nothing has such a virtue! except of course... That it does not exist!
Nothing is innocuous, invisible, nothing is capable of existing without leaving a trace. Sustainability is just another hoax in the discourse of the right-thinking people, who embellish their products, ideas or projects with the shamelessness of thinking that the rest of us are sucking our thumbs and believing in pregnant birds.
The great maxim in this plane, is that for something to be born, something must die. The food chain is an imponderable; everything that exists owes its being to the death of something, everything that exists, does it in exchange for something; things, people and projects feed on something and everything, absolutely everything, produces an expense; as the law dictates, besides, there is no face without back and the bigger the face, the bigger the back... all those who ignoring the universal laws mentioned above, invoke the unpolluted sustainability, are telling us a lie.
Always be wary of those welcome words in the politically correct language, they are literally selling you smoke, giving you a pig in a poke, and on top of that they are treating you as stupid. The truth is that most of those who sign up to these linguistic uses, do not even do it with knowledge of cause; they are simply infected unconsciously with the intentional repetition in the speeches of their tribe, because we human beings are a lot of that... “goragu eta gureak”, that ‘long live us and ours’, it is well known that it is atavistic; it is better to ignore the shit of ours, than to waste energy having our own criteria... millions of flies like shit, but that does not make it appetizing to the sensible man. Of course, in this hyper-informed and saturated world, one defends oneself as best one can and the first line of defense is to remove the grays; things are either white or black.
The man with his own criteria is therefore a rara avis, who dissects the half-truths, and cooks the half-lies, in the pot of his distrust, seasoning the dish of information, with the ingredient of intelligence, temper and good sense. Reflection requires a process of deceleration, digestion and assimilation, all things absolutely beyond the reach of contemporary fools, who buy as good the optimistic and guilty stories of those who besiege us with the victimizing discourse of the end of the planet and of their new religion, based on “terminal sin”, opposite and complementary to that of original sin, which is already outdated.
Milongas Milongas
Our new “saviors” walk around in branded flip-flops and tattoos, with a studied bohemian “clochard” look and while they cry for the disappearance of crabs from the Gobi desert, they seriously consider that eating anything that has eyes is a horrendous sin; they like to preach polyamory and sexual indefinition, the sharing of wealth, to which they have never contributed, and they believe that just because they are born, they should be provided with everything necessary to achieve happiness, without leaving a carbon footprint....
But they are good guys! Full of good wishes!... Ah, good intentions! The roads to hell are paved with good intentions!
When you have no judgment of your own, you will serve the judgment of others. The manipulation of the masses, the conspiracy in the shadows, is no longer necessary; people voluntarily sign up for it, because it is comfortable, it is easy, and because it introduces them to the shelter of a lost identity, or never treasured in the course of their days, that is, to wear a label, that of being part of the tribe of the “good” ones...
The culture of effort has been replaced by the woke culture, the good-thinking and universal goodness, a modern version of Rousseau's good savage in a vindictive and whining way.
The fall of the West is a fact; these are only the symptoms of the slimy entropy of its last days.
Everything that is born, grows, reaches its peak, sustains itself for a while and inevitably decays... nothing is sustained, nothing is sustainable...
In short... I want to be registered! I'm on my way out in this mess, but don't take me for a bigger fool than I am... To another dog with those bones!
When
you
you have no judgment of your own,
will serve the judgment of others. The manipulation of the masses, the conspiracy in the shadows, is no longer necessary; people join it voluntarily, because it is comfortable, it is easy, and because it introduces them to the shelter of a lost identity, or never treasured in the course of their days, that is, to carry a label, that of being part of the tribe of the “good”...
“The man with his own criteria is therefore a rara avis, who dissects half-truths and cooks half-lies in the pot of his mistrust, seasoning the dish of information with the ingredient of intelligence, temper and good sense

Edsan Ha JukoRyu: The Evolution of Ju Jutsu Toward Technical Mastery and Integral Development
In the world of martial arts we can find a great variety of styles and disciplines, many of them deeply rooted in tradition, while others have been transformed to adapt to the requirements of modern combat.
One of the most recent systems that introduces this combination of tradition and modernity in a very balanced way is Edsan Ha JukoRyu, a style developed by master Hanshi Eduardo Sanchez in 2022.
This martial art, born as a result of decades of experience of its founder, who has more than 50 years dedicated to the study, improvement and dissemination of Japanese Martial Arts, and is presented as a path of physical and spiritual development, meeting the demands of modern combat, without forgetting its historical heritage.Hanshi Eduardo Sanchez began his martial training at age nine with the practice of Judo, discipline in which he reached the grade of 2nd Dan.
Since then, his path through the Japanese Martial Arts led him to deeply study the art of Ju Jutsu through various styles, such as Moto Ha YoshinRyu, NihonYawara Miura RyuShohei-Ha, studying directly with the founders of the same, Doshi José Miguel Martínez Barrera, 9 Dan and SokeYasumotoAkiyoshi, 10 Dan.
However, his greatest source of learning comes from his relationship with Soke Bryan Cheek, 10th Dan in Ju Jutsu and founder of JukoshinRyu Ju Jutsu.
The relationship between Hanshi Eduardo Sanchez and SokeCheek grew stronger over more than 30 years, during which Hanshi Sanchez not only became one of the leading exponents of JukoshinRyu, but also received the highest degrees of recognition, including the prestigious Hanshi title in 2013 and 9th Dan in Ju Jutsu in 2017.
In 2022 the two decided to part ways and from that point Hanshi Eduardo decided to found his own style, resulting in a more direct, efficient version adapted to contemporary combat, reflecting both tradition and innovation.
The name of the style, Edsan Ha JukoRyu, reflects its essence. “Edsan” refers to the founder, while ‘Ha’ means school or stream. “Juko” symbolizes the balance between soft and hard, two fundamental principles of Ju Jutsu that represent the duality necessary in martial practice: softness in the reception of force and hardness in the application of techniques. Finally, “Ryu” means school or style, referring to the transmission of knowledge from one generation to another.
Fundamental Principles of Edsan Ha JukoRyu
Although Edsan Ha JukoRyu is a modern style of Ju Jutsu, its roots are firmly anchored in the ancient traditions of Japanese martial schools. What distinguishes this system is its unwavering focus on actual combat effectiveness, eliminating any theatrical or decorative elements that might divert the practitioner from the true purpose of the martial art. One of the central pillars of Edsan Ha JukoRyu is simplicity in the execution of its techniques. Rather than embellishing the movements with unnecessary complexities, each technique is reduced to its most direct and precise form. If a movement can be completed in two beats, it should be avoided to extend it to four, as this would not only be inefficient, but could put the practitioner at risk in a real situation. This clarity and economy in the movements make Edsan Ha JukoRyu an extremely efficient style, focused exclusively on direct self-defense, without concessions to aesthetics or showmanship.
And the other important pillar of the system is its orientation towards personal growth and self-improvement.
The ancient Ossamurai were a caste of warriors, hardened and disciplined, who acquired a high degree of efficiency in their combat techniques after refining their methods over hundreds of years of tribal warfare. But this warrior caste, in addition to developing sophisticated combat techniques, also created Bushido, an ethical and moral code that guided their conduct and still influences the practice of martial arts today.
The principles of Bushido, righteousness (Gi), courage (Yu), benevolence (Jin*, respect (Rei), honesty (Makoto), honor (Meiyo) and loyalty (Chugi), are fundamental in Edsan Ha JukoRyu.
These values not only guide the conduct of practitioners within the Dojo, but also in their daily lives, fostering a balanced existence in harmony with the environment.
What makes Edsan Ha JukoRyu unique in the modern world is its fidelity to these traditional principles, but adapted to contemporary needs. Every technique and every movement within this system has been carefully refined to ensure that it is useful in real combat situations, avoiding any unnecessary embellishment. This makes Edsan Ha JukoRyu the ultimate expression of the art of the samurai, not only as a means of selfdefense, but as a path to personal mastery and integral development of the self.
“Although Edsan Ha JukoRyu is a modern style of Ju Jutsu, its roots are firmly anchored in the ancient traditions of Japanese martial schools. What distinguishes this system is its unwavering focus on actual combat effectiveness, eliminating any theatrical or decorative elements that might divert the practitioner from the true purpose of the Martial Art.”
Internal Ju Jutsu. The hidden power within us
The martial arts were designed to achieve maximum performance on the battlefield through a sophisticated set of techniques, attitudes and strategies, using as an instrument our body and mind, which must be worked to the limit to achieve the perfection necessary to achieve that purpose.
But the ancient warriors realized that discipline, self-control, the state of abandonment necessary to achieve maximum effectiveness on the battlefield, were at the same time a tool that enhanced very advanced states of consciousness, and that on a daily basis improved the health and physical, emotional and mental quality of those who practiced them.
The essence of the self-improvement of this art is manifested, among other aspects, in the work of conscious breathing and the accumulation of inner silence, allowing practitioners to get in touch with their inner self. In this state of calm, the movements flow naturally, bringing not only efficiency in combat, but also harmony, health and inner peace. This approach, known in our school as inner Ju Jutsu, emphasizes the state of mindfulness on and off the tatami, which is a very personal contribution of Hanshi.
The goal is to achieve a combination of physical and mental relaxation with full attention and alertness. This state of mind is essential both on the battlefield and in daily life, as it allows practitioners to live in the present with unparalleled clarity and lucidity. In this way, Edsan Ha JukoRyu not only prepares practitioners for combat, but also helps them to face everyday challenges with a serene and focused mind.
When we perform our training fully conscious and with the uncompromising purpose of being here and now, we acquire, over time, a mindfulness that allows us to enjoy a state of lucidity, from which, decision making, whether for selfdefense or for everyday life acquires a character of total realization.
The goal is to achieve a combination of physical and mental relaxation with total attention and alertness.”
The Influence of Masters and Lineages
As already mentioned, although Edsan Ha JukoRyu is a modern style of Ju Jutsu, fully adapted to the real combat of today, all its techniques and movements, as well as the essential energetic and philosophical foundations, are deeply rooted in the ancient Japanese fighting schools.
The end of the 19th century saw the belated opening of Japan to the modern world. Until that time, the country had been immersed in a complex feudal system, which, of course, encompassed all aspects of the country's life, social, political, commercial, religious, etc.
As a consequence of this opening to the outside world, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, different waves of migration took place, especially to Europe and the United States, with the result that part of the martial, philosophical and spiritual knowledge that until then had been the exclusive preserve of some Japanese Masters, traveled to the West. Two episodes in particular of these migrations to the West have a direct relationship with the Edsan Ha JukoRyu style:
On the one hand, it was in the last decade of the 19th century when SenseiYukioTani, expert of the TenshinShinyoRyu and Fusen Ryu schools, arrived in London, who revolutionized the concept of hand-to-hand fighting and played a fundamental role in the expansion of Ju Jutsu and Judo in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom.
Shortly after, around 1919, Sensei Matsutaro Otani arrived in London, becoming the most advanced student of Sensei Yukio Tani and together they did a great job of spreading and adapting all their knowledge, laying the foundations for the development of Judo and Ju Jutsu in the United Kingdom. Many legends of British Judo and Ju Jutsu started directly with these great Masters. One of these legends, was the current Soke Bryan Cheek, who studied with Sensei Otani and together with other important influences, such as Soke Robert Clark or Soke Richard Morris, resulted first in the style of Ju JutsuJukoRyu, widely spread throughout the UK, and then to the style created by Soke Cheek, JukoshinRyu Ju Jutsu, as the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to the study and development of the Japanese combat art.
Hanshi Eduardo Sanchez had the privilege of studying JukoRyu first with Soke Richard Morris and later, for more than 30 years with Soke Bryan Cheek.
In the year 2022, the paths of SokeCheek and Hanshi Eduardo Sanchez separated and a new very personal and committed proposal was born, which is what we know as Edsan Ha JukoRyu.
On the other hand, the Ogawa family landed in Santos (Brazil) in 1935. They were descendants from the village of Kawa and gave birth to the Kaze no RyuBugei style. In 1964, SenseiTazuoShiniyuki arrived in Brazil to work for Ogawa Hiroshi with the practice of Ebunto, ancient spiritual knowledge of the Shizen people. At OgawaSensei's school, ShiniyukiTazuoSensei trained in E-bunto, or Ochikara, in Japanese language, a few Tonbo, among them ShidoshiJordan, who started his lineage in his native Brazil, but later emigrated to Europe, settling in Valencia, where he continues his teaching work. There he met his current student, Shidoshi Alfredo Tucci, where they both continue the task of spreading the teachings of their masters. Hanshi Eduardo Sanchez is a disciple of Shidoshi Alfredo Tucci, so the magical and spiritual world of E-bunto, dyes the philosophy of his style Edsan Ha JukoRyu.
Conclusion: A Path of Growth and Transformation
Edsan Ha JukoRyu is much more than a self-defense system. It is a style of Ju Jutsu deeply rooted in the Japanese tradition, but adapted to the needs of modern combat. Its integral focus on physical, mental and spiritual growth makes it a transformative path for its practitioners.
Hanshi Eduardo Sanchez, through this system, seeks not only to form competent fighters, but also responsible and integral leaders, capable of improving their lives and those around them. His goal is to expand the knowledge of Edsan Ha JukoRyu internationally, sharing his vision in seminars and classes around the world, training instructors to continue the spread of this unique martial art.
In summary, Edsan Ha JukoRyu is a system that not only responds to the demands of real combat, but also offers an opportunity for personal growth and inner peace, turning each practice into a journey towards self-knowledge and selfimprovement.

Hanshi Eduardo Sanshez hanshi@edsandojo.com
I met Master Eduardo Sanchez a few years ago. His style of Ju Jutsu was always vigorous and effective. I have seen him mature, grow and empower himself, defining and expanding his work under the tutelage of several teachers; however, two years ago he began his solo journey. It was not an easy decision, but he knew how to step forward, because his naturally upright heart pushed him to do so.
Today he presents the formal consequences of this new stage in which he will undoubtedly be accompanied by many students, eager to learn with someone honest, and who knows how to teach like few others.
I wish him the greatest success, because it is not easy to find together competence in knowledge and pedagogy, and the necessary good character and common sense to understand the needs of people who approach him looking for guidance.
Master Eduardo knows well the difficulties of the worthy purpose of teaching, and they are precisely and sometimes our bad experiences, the best breeding ground not to make the same mistakes of our predecessors.
The one who teaches you must know what he is teaching. The one who teaches you must know what he teaches you. The one who teaches you must know how to guide you on your own path, without tarnishing it with his own faults. Eduardo San brings together these rare virtues, fruit of his nature and his path.
The Academy of Martial Movement, fusion of the knowledge of Kyusho Jitsu and Tuite Jitsu of M° Frisan Gianluca together with the knowledge of the Art of Movement of M° Pascut Fulvio, continues the technical progression in the training of high level martial instructors and makes available to all the universal principles hidden in the movements of internal and external martial arts, unifying them and focusing them on precision, to bring Kyusho to a new level. In this 3rd volume, we will continue with a detailed study of the pressure points of the head, exercises and technical efficiency, ways to make the force penetrate the opponent's body ... but not only that, we will understand that really “stun” an attacker can be simple and effective. Before the analysis of the pressure points, their location, the best angle to strike, rub, manipulate ... we continue with the principles of martial movement, a unique feature of our academy. The next step is to understand how the transmission of this force occurs, how to charge the “potential” blow and unload it on the opponent. Block by block, internal and external work on our body will make our body structure and alignment a sharp tool to utilize 'force multipliers' at the Kyusho points. The devastating effectiveness of Kyusho is now further amplified, with aspects that can be concretely enhanced and trained, regardless of external and immutable aspects such as our opponent's 'sensitivity' to Kyusho attacks!

ON THE WAY TO MAGIC HANDS
The following essay deals with the development of my knowledge of “Functional” Wing Tsun. Franco Vacirca
Magic Hands was originally conceived as an add-on for Wing Tsun, but developed into an independent system, as Natalie, Grandmaster Kernspecht's daughter, explained to me. It is the result of intensive research into the new internal Chinese fighting styles such as Pakua, Hsing I, I Chuan etc. with the aim of optimizing ChiSao in Wing Tsun in particular. GM Kernspecht’s interpreted that ChiSao had too many gaps and was not compatible enough with grappling methods. Consequently, he began to close these gaps by introducing new elements from the new internal styles.
The art of fighting with ChiSao from Wing Tsun is nothing new, but the approach presented by GM Kernspecht is. The name “ChiSao Kuen” was changed to ”Magic Hands”, which was primarily a question of legal admissibility, as Grandmaster Kernspecht had difficulties in patenting “ChiSao Kuen”. As a result, a new name was needed for this method, and the people who practiced it kept saying that it must be some kind of magic because they could not explain the effect. This is how the name “Magic Hands” was finally born.
“Magic Hands” is not a new style but comprises a series of concepts that can also be learned by people with no previous knowledge of Wing Tsun or Wing Chun. The Wing Tsun developed by GM Kernspecht can be described as “functional”, as it is characterized by a high degree of practical relevance. The term Magic Hands makes it clear that Chi Sao plays a central role, emphasizing the functionality of the system. The practice of his Chi Sao is no longer carried out exclusively by Wing Tsun practitioners, but also by people from various martial arts and combat sports. This also includes practitioners from MMA, Grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, like me.
The term “Functional” Wing Tsun seems appropriate to me, because in my opinion it contains the information in the detail, the detail in the detail. As a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu man, I have experienced this feeling several times when training with Master Rickson Gracie. In this context, too, there is talk of “Invisible Jiu-Jitsu”. Sifu Kernspecht has detailed knowledge that takes a long time to acquire. Acquiring this knowledge requires continuous and dedicated self-study. This is a fundamental principle of martial arts, that the acquisition of skills is associated with a high degree of self-discipline and continuous training.
Due to the focus on functional Wing Tsun, the learning process takes place in a short time. Natalie pointed out to me that GM Kernspecht follows a didactic approach that makes it possible to teach the content even to people without fighting experience. The problem is always solved directly at the cause to avoid getting stuck in the problem itself. Through precise movements, not only is the solution to the problem learned, but also the avoidance of further countermovements. For example, the aim is not only too free oneself from a double-arm hold, but also to defend against a strike to the body and counter it efficiently.
Provided that the content is adequately taught by a qualified instructor, no prior knowledge is required to learn Magic Hands according to GM Kernspecht's method. However, it should be noted that an increasing number of participants from the fields of Karate, Wrestling, MMA and Grappling are taking part in the training courses. The question arises as to why this is the case. The focus is on understanding the mechanics of the movement to enable simplified execution regardless of body size and strength.
«Magic Hands” is not a new style but comprises a series of concepts that can also be learned by people with no previous knowledge of Wing Tsun or Wing Chun.»
(Also) in Wing Tsun, Sifu Kernspecht told me, a certain “aggressiveness” is required so that the techniques can be used effectively in a real fight. In contrast, Magic Hands makes it possible to control the attacker effortlessly without having to become aggressive (large movements). This is also relevant at an older age, as a person's physical abilities diminish over time. Nevertheless, the technique must be able to adequately protect the practitioner.
Even within the community of Wing Tsun practitioners, the new approach does not meet with universal approval. Sometimes people strive for something new, but they prefer to stay in their familiar surroundings rather than embrace something new. However, Demetrio, my brother, likes to emphasize that it is not necessary to leave your comfort zone to learn new skills. Expanding your comfort zone is already enough.
According to Sifu Kernspecht, there are currently over 120 schools representing and practicing Magic Hands. His travel habits are characterized by a high degree of mobility, which regularly takes him to different countries and cities. “The Magic Hands concept allows me to get people excited about training again”, explains Sifu Kernspecht, who also talks about the challenges posed by the pandemic, which has affected society.
It is difficult to put Magic Hands into words as it is a very subtle method that needs to be experienced to be understood. I recognize the potential danger that so-called “copy and paste” specialists, who are characterized by a certain tendency to imitate, will crawl out of their holes and try to copy the concept of Magic Hands and imitate the Grand Master. It must be said that even this attempt will not be crowned with success, as the experience and knowledge of this outstanding man cannot be reproduced, even if we are talking about magic.
«The Magic Hands concept allows me to get people excited about training again.»
Regarding the question of whether Magic Hands can also be used in (Brazilian and Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu, the following can be stated: This question can be answered unequivocally with a big “YES”. In Jiu-Jitsu, especially according to the Gracie method that we represent, it is about conveying concepts in such a way that they can be understood and implemented by all users. It is about understanding how the “idea” can be adapted to individual needs, regardless of the style being practiced. It can therefore be stated that the idea is also used in Jiu-Jitsu, both on the ground and in the standing position. As already explained, the essence lies in the details: “In every Ying there is also a piece of Yang, and vice versa!”
In Magic Hands, the movements are always performed with the entire body, not just in a forward and backward motion. The fusion of body and mind with the technique is an immediate experience when practicing with Sifu Kernspecht. It goes without saying that it must be accepted that he has practiced Wing Tsun all his life, which results in a specific basis. Nevertheless, his knowledge is characterized by continuous and tireless research into fighting. This natural strength and vitality can be seen as a role model for any practitioner of martial arts.
It should also be noted that there are many “experts” in the martial arts, but only a small number of people who are able to adequately impart their knowledge. GM Kernspecht's didactic approach is unique in this form. It is crucial that the content is taught in a way that enables learners to apply the knowledge and skills quickly and effectively. In Asian cultures, the willingness to dedicate oneself to a master and sacrifice one's life is a widespread practice. In Western societies, however, such dedication is not common. Instead, the pursuit of goals and success is an essential part of individual life planning. There is a willingness to invest time, with the expectation that the effort will pay off in a short time and that the first successes will be visible.
It can be said that Magic Hands is revolutionizing classic Wing Tsun. This is since it requires thinking outside the box. This is my humble opinion, and I would like to emphasize that I am not an expert in Wing Tsun/Wing Chun. Nevertheless, I am convinced that Magic Hands will create a new generation of practitioners who will combine the concepts of Wing Tsun and Magic Hands.
For anyone who comes from a different style and system, as I did too, it is recommended to watch this, but not just on YouTube, but on site and preferably directly from the grandmaster. This is by no means hocuspocus, but scientific knowledge that helps you to understand things better and implement them more efficiently.
In a discussion with Sifu Kernspecht yesterday evening, the following sentence was uttered: “I wish I'd had this knowledge before!” This sentence was accompanied by an approving thought from me. Indeed, I recently had the opportunity to have a remarkable experience alongside Sifu Kernspecht. The question of why I didn't have this experience earlier can be answered as follows: I was probably not yet sufficiently prepared. The time factor plays a decisive role, as I learned today in training. The technique is performed at the time that promises the greatest success, not earlier or later, but at the optimum moment.
«The next Magic Hands training camp in Gran Canaria will be in February next year with the additional participation of Grandmaster Bill Newman, British Escrima and weaponry expert.»
Martial arts have led me to the best moments of my life. These moments would be particularly suitable for inspiring others to be more motivated. In this regard, please refer to today's report from Gran Canaria, an island that is also highly recommended. It should be emphasized once again at this point that the opportunity to get to know Sifu Kernspecht and Magic Hands should be taken. In any case, the resulting benefits can be considered great.
The next Magic Hands training camp in Gran Canaria will be in February next year with the additional participation of Grandmaster Bill Newman, British Escrima and weaponry expert, and of course I will be there for sure, to continue my journey under the teaching of Grandmaster Kernspecht and his daughter Natalie. Thank to all of them receiving me with open hands and have spend a great time with all of them.

Self-defense programs are very important nowadays due to the increase of crimes around the world and are more comprehensive than martial arts sports training.
The PFS program has been developed by military experts in the field of combat and high-level martial arts instructors under the supervision of its founder, Master Ahmed Al-Houli, and is now considered one of the most important combat programs in the face of real confrontations. Its practice has spread to several countries. An important program for both military and civilian personnel to protect society.
“A
Tough Truth to Swallow”
A Tough Truth to Swallow: “Nobody needs you. Seriously, you’re not that important so get over it.”
We often find ourselves overwhelmed, carrying the weight of responsibility, convinced that without us, everything we hold dear—our families, loved ones, careers, and businesses—would crumble. This belief, while deeply ingrained in us, is a source of immense stress and anxiety. But the reality is far different: life goes on, with or without us. The uncomfortable truth is that all things, and all people, are ultimately replaceable. When we are no longer here, our families, children, spouses, and businesses will continue. They may not function exactly as we would have envisioned, but they will endure, adapt, and move forward.
Understanding this is both humbling and liberating. It encourages us to shift our focus from the fear of what will happen in our absence to the blessing of the present moment. We are here, now, and that is a gift. Instead of being consumed with worry over the future, we should embrace today with gratitude, do our best to live joyfully, and help those around us. What matters most is the quality of the time we have, not the fear of how things will unfold once we’re gone.
However, accepting this truth is no easy task because it forces us to confront and dismantle our ego. Much of our self-worth is tied to the belief that we are essential, that our value is defined by how many people rely on us. We measure our importance by the roles we play—provider, caretaker, leader—and the belief that others would be lost without us. But once we strip away this illusion, we see that while people may want us around, their ultimate happiness, survival, and success don’t depend on us. Their lives, their joy, their sorrow—all of it—is a reflection of their own choices and selfdetermination.
“The uncomfortable truth is that all things, and all people, are ultimately
replaceable. When we are no longer here, our families, children, spouses, and businesses will continue.”
This isn’t to suggest that our presence doesn’t matter or that our contributions don’t have significance. We are social beings, and our connections to others are meaningful. But recognizing that we are not the cornerstone of anyone’s existence allows us to approach life from a place of freedom rather than fear. It enables us to love and support others without being weighed down by the crushing responsibility of thinking that everything depends on us.
So, the challenge lies in letting go of the ego, in dissolving the false narratives we’ve built about our irreplaceability. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t care for others or neglect our responsibilities. On the contrary, when we release ourselves from the illusion of being indispensable, we free ourselves to truly give, to be present without the burden of fear. And in doing so, we can experience life more fully, savoring the present, doing our best, and trusting that the future—whether we are here or not—will take care of itself.
Ultimately, life is not about how many people need us. It’s about how we show up in the moments we’re given. It’s about living with purpose, helping others from a place of love, and accepting that while our presence is valuable, it is not the foundation on which everything rests. Life, and the lives of those we love, will continue, shaped by their own strength, resilience, and choices.
The more we accept this, the more we can release ourselves from the weight of unnecessary guilt and pressure, and live with greater peace, joy, and fulfillment.
This truth hit me hard during an emotional moment with one of my students. Overwhelmed by the crushing weight of guilt and responsibility, he broke down in tears and said something that I will never forget: “I hate my parents. I want to die, but I can’t because I have to take care of them.” His words, born out of pain, encapsulated the internal conflict many endure— especially firstborn sons raised in traditional cultures. The idea of being bound by duty, trapped between personal desires and familial obligations, can become an unbearable burden. His confession echoed something I’ve encountered in my own life: the conflict between personal fulfillment and meeting the expectations of those who raised and shaped us.
This incident forced me to reflect deeply on my own experiences. I, too, have struggled with the weight of responsibility. I know all too well the feeling of being inadequate, knowing that no matter how hard I try, I may never completely meet my parents’ expectations. It’s a suffocating pressure, one that can turn love and respect into feelings of guilt and even resentment. But as I reflected on my student’s words, I realized that I never want my sense of responsibility to become the source of my own pain or misery. I refuse to let it destroy my inner peace or steal my joy.
Many people, unable to cope with this heavy burden, fall into a cycle of blame. They point fingers at their parents, accusing them of being the source of their misery. Some sink so deeply into this despair that they carry it with them into adulthood, growing resentful and, in extreme cases, suicidal. But I have chosen a different path. I realize now that it’s not our parents' fault for wanting the best for us. They raised us with the hopes of giving us a better life than they had. It’s natural for parents to want to see their children succeed, but the weight of those expectations can sometimes become overwhelming.
Instead of blaming them, I choose to love and accept my parents for who they are—flawed, human, and doing their best with the tools they had. But more importantly, I recognize that I am responsible for how I interpret and carry my obligations. The burden of responsibility is not inherently destructive; it’s the way we perceive it that matters.
So, I decided to shift my mindset. Instead of telling myself, “I have to take care of my family”, “I have to work”, or “I have to care for my children”, I began telling myself “I choose to do these things”. This shift is subtle, but its impact is profound. It changes the narrative from one of obligation to one of empowerment. By reframing responsibilities as choices, we restore our agency. Instead of feeling trapped, we can embrace our roles with purpose and positivity.
This mental shift also helps us realize that the energy we put into the world shapes our experience. Negativity breeds more negativity, creating a vicious cycle of resentment and discontent. Conversely, positivity attracts more positive outcomes, reinforcing a healthier outlook on life. Life may not be a literal magnet, but our attitude certainly influences the way we navigate it. When we choose to approach our duties with a sense of agency and gratitude, the burdens don’t disappear—but they do become more manageable.
That said, I am not advocating for abandoning our responsibilities or only seeking personal happiness. True fulfillment comes from serving others, especially when we do so selflessly. What I’m suggesting is that we release ourselves from the inner pain of feeling like we’re failing if we don’t meet every expectation placed on us. The guilt we carry from not being able to fulfill every role perfectly is what often drains us.
To effectively care for others, we must first find contentment and peace within ourselves. If we are not happy, if we are consumed by guilt or weighed down by unrealistic expectations, we can’t give our best to those who depend on us. Instead of agonizing over what might happen without us or worrying about falling short, we need to focus on taking meaningful action. Worry is an endless loop—it doesn’t solve problems. Only action can lead to real change.
For me, this journey has led to one of my hardest realizations: accepting that the things I hold most dear, like Hwa Rang Do, will exist and continue without me. It’s difficult to accept that the legacy I’ve spent a lifetime building will go on after I am gone. But this realization has also brought me a sense of peace. Instead of fighting against it, I’ve chosen to embrace it. I now focus my energy on ensuring that my legacy not only survives but thrives, even in my absence.
This shift has allowed me to let go of the fear of being replaced or forgotten. It has opened the door to greater clarity, allowing me to focus on the present and to build something enduring—something that will continue to inspire and uplift others long after I am gone.
By reframing our sense of duty as a choice and freeing ourselves from guilt, we allow ourselves to serve those we love with a full and open heart. Rather than being a source of pain, our responsibilities can become a pathway to fulfillment and joy. It all starts with changing how we see the weight we carry.
In my younger years, the weight of expectations was a driving force. It fueled my ambition, pushing me to achieve, to surpass every obstacle, and to strive for greatness. The burden was heavy, but I wore it as a badge of honor, convinced that fulfilling those expectations was not only necessary but noble. At the time, it seemed that my self-worth depended

on how much I could accomplish, how well I could meet the standards set by others—be it my parents, my mentors, or even society at large. I believed that the harder I pushed, the more worthy I would become.
But now, as I reach mid-life, I’ve come to realize that this same drive, which once propelled me forward, has transformed into an anchor, pulling me down into the depths of doubt, exhaustion, and disillusionment. The ambition that once filled me with purpose has, over time, turned into a constant reminder of how much further I have to go—how impossible it is to meet everyone’s expectations, including my own. The weight I once carried proudly has now become a burden, sinking me slowly like a ship taking on water.
I see clearly now that much of my unhappiness stems from clinging to these impossible expectations—those imposed on me and those I’ve imposed on myself. The constant striving to be more, to do more, to be everything for everyone has drained me of joy and left me feeling inadequate, no matter how much I achieve. It’s as if I’ve been aboard the Titanic, believing that if I just worked hard enough, I could somehow save the ship from sinking. But the truth is, no amount of effort can keep it afloat because the ship was destined to sink under the weight of those unrealistic demands.
So, I’ve made the conscious decision to cut myself free from this sinking ship. I am choosing to let go of the need for perfection, the need to meet every expectation, the need to be everything for everyone. I realize now that this constant striving, this relentless pursuit of external validation, was never going to lead me to fulfillment. Instead, it only ensured that I would keep chasing an elusive goal, always out of reach.
Now, I am beginning to build a new ship—one that isn’t weighed down by the burdens of the past, by the need to prove myself, or by the pressure to meet impossible standards. This new ship is crafted from hope, reconciliation, and acceptance. Hope for the future, not as something to be feared, but as something to embrace. Reconciliation with my own limitations, with the understanding that I am enough as I am, and that my worth isn’t tied to how much I achieve or how perfectly I fulfill others’ expectations. And most importantly, acceptance—acceptance of myself, of my journey, and of the fact that life’s true meaning isn’t found in meeting every demand placed on us, but in living authentically and with purpose.
Letting go of this burden doesn’t mean abandoning my responsibilities or giving up on
striving for excellence. It means no longer allowing the weight of external pressures to define me. It means moving forward with a clearer sense of who I am and what truly matters. I now focus on building a life that reflects my values, not just the expectations of others.
This process of letting go and rebuilding isn’t easy. It requires unlearning deeply ingrained beliefs and reimagining what success and fulfillment look like. But I’m committed to this new journey—a journey where peace, love, and humility guide me, instead of fear, pressure, or the never-ending chase for approval.
I am still striving, but for something different now. I strive to live a life of meaning and connection, rooted in self-compassion and understanding. I strive to build something that isn’t just about external success, but about internal peace. This is the new ship I am crafting, and it will carry me forward—lighter, freer, and more aligned with the life I truly want to live.
And all of this became possible only when I embraced the humility to surrender to the Will of God—a humility that didn’t come easily or quickly, but one that I’ve gained through the hard-earned wisdom of half a century of struggle. Over the years, I’ve fought, resisted, and at times even rebelled against the currents of life, convinced that sheer willpower and determination alone could lead me to fulfillment. But it was only when I finally let go of the illusion of control—when I surrendered to something greater than myself—that I began to understand the deeper purpose for which I was created.
Surrendering to God’s will doesn’t mean abandoning effort or resigning oneself to fate. Rather, it is about aligning my heart, my intentions, and my actions with a higher, unshakeable Truth—a Truth that is constant, like the North Star, guiding me through the storms of life. Without this firm belief, without the foundation of Truth, it doesn’t matter how far or fast we travel, how much we strive, or how hard we push; we remain adrift in an endless ocean of uncertainty. We may expend tremendous energy and cover great distances, but without that inner compass, we are like a ship without a destination—always moving, but never arriving.
For years, I was that ship—pushing through the waves, traveling far and wide, but never finding a true port of peace. The exhaustion of trying to navigate life on my own terms, under my own limited understanding, left me weary and disillusioned. I was always reaching for something just beyond my grasp, always chasing a horizon that seemed to retreat the closer I came to it. It wasn’t until I surrendered to God’s purpose for me—until I acknowledged that His plan is far greater than my own—that I began to feel anchored and steady, no longer lost at sea.
This surrender isn’t passive; it’s an active, daily commitment to trust in the divine wisdom that orchestrates the universe. It requires faith in the unfolding of life, even when I cannot see the full picture. It requires humility to accept that I am not the master of my own destiny, but rather a vessel, guided by a purpose that transcends my own desires, ambitions, or fears. And it requires courage to let go of the need for control, to stop clinging to the familiar but futile pursuit of external validation, and instead to trust that I am being led exactly where I need to be.
Through this surrender, I have found a sense of peace that I never knew was possible. It is a peace that comes not from the absence of challenges or struggles, but from the deep, abiding knowledge that I am on the right path— that I am moving toward a destination that is meaningful, eternal, and aligned with the purpose for which I was created. And this purpose is not something I can fully understand with my limited human mind; it is something that I trust with my heart and soul.
Without this foundation of Truth, life becomes an endless chase—always striving, always seeking, but never finding. We can travel far, we can work tirelessly, and yet without that inner compass, we remain lost, adrift in a sea of confusion, endlessly searching for something we can never attain on our own. The more we strive to control the outcome, the further we drift from the peace we seek. But when we anchor ourselves in God’s will, when we allow Truth to guide us, we find that we no longer need to chase; instead, we are drawn naturally toward our true purpose.
This is the profound realization that has transformed my life. It has allowed me to stop battling the waves and instead navigate with grace, trusting in the direction I am being led. And with this trust comes a freedom I never imagined—a freedom from the weight of unrealistic expectations, a freedom from the pressure to constantly prove myself, and a freedom from the fear of failure. I no longer need to fear drifting aimlessly because I am anchored in something far greater than myself. I am anchored in God’s purpose for me, and that is where I find my peace, my direction, and my fulfillment.
With love, peace, honor, and humility,
“This process of letting go and rebuilding isn’t easy. It requires unlearning deeply ingrained beliefs and reimagining what success and fulfillment look like.”
“Thai Boxers know this well and for this reason they keep on rehearsing a few basic moves over and over again as long as they wish to step on a ring and fight against tough opponents: no Muay Thai champion will ever discard basic techniques as being ‘too simple’.”
Mastering true Muay Thai
All Martial Arts’ skills are based on specific groups of maneuvers and fighting principles: these fundamental elements are usually called “the basics”. Muay is a complete fighting system: it is regarded by some as a purely striking art but all experts know that the Siamese weapon-less style is also rich in grappling techniques suited for close range combat. All the superb fighting skills of Muay are taught by knowledgeable teachers following a well-established step by step approach; a building cannot be built starting from the roof. Likewise, a martial arts student cannot be taught advanced techniques too soon, before he
has learned the basics of his Art. Learning doesn’t mean just seeing, it means absorbing completely. In fact, the basics of Muay must be digested and become part of all students’ organism, if they wish to become experts or teachers of this Art. And once a student has reached a good level becoming himself a teacher (Khru Muay), he must not neglect the study of basics, even if he starts to learn very advanced techniques. If he does, his technical progression will start to slow down, his moves will start to be tarnished and sooner or later he will lose his skills. Studying a Martial Art is like boiling water: if the fire dies (the energy put in learning and rehearsing the basics), the water will quickly get cold again (the technical level will get worse in a short time).
Thai Boxers know this well and for this reason they keep on rehearsing a few basic moves over and over again as long as they wish to step on a ring and fight against tough opponents: no Muay Thai champion will ever discard basic techniques as being “too simple”. On the contrary he will do his best to hone the execution of every step, dodge, strike until perfection is reached. Unfortunately, this is not always the case with traditional Muay exponents: their interest in learning new techniques to the detriment of basics, is the reason for a widespread lack of technical prowess.
The long hours spent to rehearse each move, repeating the same maneuver for hundreds of times may seem boring: however, in martial arts learning there is no shortcut, no cheating. Only through committed, constant practice of basic techniques we shall ever reach full mastery of our chosen Art. The secret is to never be satisfied of one’s ability: if you think you are fast, work hard to become faster. If you are a hard puncher, don’t feel satisfied and train to punch harder.
The fundamental techniques are taught in a specific order which is generally the same in all schools and styles of Muay.
1. The various guard positions
2. The basic footwork patterns
3. The basic use of the 9 body weapons to attack (fists, feet and shins, elbows, knees and head)
4. The Art of defense
By combining these 4 elements according to established patterns, you will get the counterattack techniques to deal with the most frequent types of attacks carried out with the 9 body weapons. Once the basic principles of use of the aforementioned elements have been assimilated, the student will begin to be instructed in grappling techniques: holds, off-balancing maneuvers, joint locks, throws. This teaching system has been used by countless Siamese masters over the centuries and still proves to be an excellent method for instructing Muay students all over the world.
Some important points with regard to Muay’s basics are as follows
• With regard to Mai Muay (techniques of Muay), basic doesn’t mean easy. On the contrary it means most important. This is a common misconception. Some students (and teachers) confuse the term basic with easy and, as a consequence, they discard the regular practice of basics as useless. This is a big mistake since every basic Muay Thai
move hides a quantity of fighting concepts that require time and thousands of repetitions to be fully understood. All the nuances of a “simple” step and punch maneuver, for example, with all its possible variations, can be appreciated only in time, after many rounds of rehearsal with a good teacher and many sparring partners of different size.
• Without strong roots a big tree cannot grow healthy and is doomed to die.
Master Chaisawat Tienviboon founder of Muay Chaisawat compares Muay to a big tree: the roots are the fundamentals or basic components of his Art. The stronger the roots the bigger and healthier the tree. In a similar way, continuously working on the fundamentals of Muay brings nourishing to the roots of our tree, i.e., Muay Boran IMBA and keeps it growing strong and healthy.
• If you want to be a good martial artist behave like a ruminant.
In fact, rumination, is the process by which the cow regurgitates previously consumed feed and masticates it a second time. Similarly, a good martial art student is supposed to first “swallow” the knowledge he has been taught (that is, absorbing without asking too many questions) and then regurgitate it (meditate on what he has learned), chew it again (rehearse over and over again) until he really digest it (the technique becomes part of him).
• Learning is a spiralling process, not a linear one.
Instead of searching for “new techniques” to learn, a good martial artist should concentrate on perfecting already acquired skills, i.e., the basics. A correct learning process can be compared to a drill that penetrates deeper and deeper into a surface. The deeper you go (the more you train) the better you will understand your Art’s principles. New elements will spring out as a consequence of a better comprehension of the fundamental components. The Ialready-know-this mentality is self-destructive for a Muay Boran student and even more so for a teacher.
• Basic training is linked to the concept of humility. Many times martial arts teachers work hard to reach a good level of technical proficiency and when, according to their judgement, this is accomplished, they simply stop. Being hungry no more for knowledge or recognition by their peers their commitment to training simply fades: the basics start to be considered as “students’ stuff”. However, this kind of attitude reflects an unjustified pride that, in the long term, can only create a false sense of achievement. A humble practitioner, on the contrary, realizes that he is incomplete in his ability and therefore keeps trying hard to be a better martial artist. Once more, humbleness wins over pride.

KALI ESTOCADO
The Arnis de Mano of the lunge
Jun Ibanez Matagay, bodyguard of Marcos (the prime minister of the Philippines) due to changes in the political order of his country, fled to Italy, specifically to Milan. It was the 1980s and Kung Fu continued to fascinate many martial arts practitioners. Matagay was determined to promote his style, called Arku Tai Pa Kung Fu, in our country. I, along with others, began to follow him. We started practicing Kung Fu and then convinced the master to teach us Arnis De Mano in his teaching system, in fact the first letters of his style mean arnis. It should be noted that the term kali, by which Filipino martial arts are now known all over the world, was completely unknown to Master Matagay.
Arnis De Mano was a martial discipline completely different from those practiced at the time, firstly because it was based on the use of weapons; many know that in traditional Asian arts, learning any weapon was usually reserved for black belts. Secondly because the movements, postures, movement patterns were nothing like karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, etc.
Our colleagues of Viet Vo Dao, the Vietnamese martial art that preceded the Arnis De Mano lesson or the Judo lesson that followed, looked at us with a certain distrust but also with great curiosity. There were only four of us in all of Italy who were dedicated to this new discipline, which exploded in a few years, creating a kind of fashion, to the point that today in every Italian direct there is at least one gym where you can hear the beating of Kali sticks (arnis or escrima). My interest in the history and origins of martial disciplines led me to bombard the master with questions. Questions that arose from reading articles and books (you tube did not exist yet). One day I became obsessed with the list of styles published in the book Philipino Martial Arts by Dan Inosanto, in particular on page 11, where the greatest popularizer of the Filipino arts describes the origins of the names of the styles: he writes that some are named after the tactics predominantly used (retreat, striking backwards or long distance) others are named after the creator and others after the place of birth. Even enemies were used, for example, I quote literally from Inosanto's text: “and some like (the Italian style) were named after the enemy”.
The lunge is, in fencing, the lightning strike of the point and the arnis style of the lunge is characterized precisely by these lightning actions in which the point starts from different angles and not only from the center of the body.”
Why enemy?
An Italian, Antonio Pigafetta, who in 1521 was part of Magellan's retinue during the famous ambush of Lapu Lapu, tells us. Magellan liked to surround himself with skilled mercenaries and, at that time, throughout Europe, the best experts in the scientia d'arme were Italians. Their handling of sword and dagger, the tactics and strategy of deadly blows, the scientific use of the thrust and the prey, the sense of time and space studied according to strict mathematical rules, had made these mercenaries extraordinary fighters. The Filipinos, then as now, absorbed what was lethal and scientific in enemy fencing and assimilated it, integrating it with their own methods and, above all, adapting it to the circumstances: instead of the sword they used the bamboo stick and instead of the dagger the famous Balisong butterfly knife. Returning to master Matagay. To answer my question, the Filipino master used for the first time the term lunge (sometimes it was rapier) and showed me the point strike not only starting from the center of the body as we are used to seeing in the Olympic fencing lunge technique, but also starting from two other unusual positions: the first with the arm retracted near the right shoulder (the back of the hand is up) and the lower part of the stick almost in contact with the shoulder; the second with the hand (right) near the left shoulder (fingers of the hand pointing upwards) again with the lower part of the stick in contact with the shoulder (the left one this time) in both cases the tip always threatened the opponent.
To the words I would add a quick motion that I would repeat like a refrain in any kind of attack. I loved it, and anyone in my place could recognize the efficacy of such a combination of deadly, cheap and effective point strikes, applied after any parry or playing in advance. However, two factors had caused the initial abandonment of such a beautiful and effective art: the first was that such strokes could not be used in competitions. The toe stroke, for serious safety reasons, was and still is forbidden. At that time, stick fighting competitions were taking their first steps and, as everyone knows, the organization had to protect the athlete. The second, on the other hand, was the result of the bulimia from which we were beginning to suffer: the movements, however effective and beautiful they were, seemed to be part of a program that was too meager; we were used to digesting considerable amounts of techniques and variations and the more we knew the more we wanted to know, it was an endless hunger. Over time, traveling and comparing myself with known masters and with others completely unknown, I managed to enrich this fantastic style by putting together, as always, the fragments until I reached an organic compendium. The strike is, in fencing, the lightning strike and the arnis style of striking is characterized precisely by these lightning actions in which the point starts from different angles and not only from the center of the body. Today, to adapt to the times and make the terpine more understandable to many, arnis stocada a has become more succinctly Kali Estocado.

But they knew how to turn

"... Fifty canarians of the best swimmers to be found, each equipped with a cabarco and a dragon tree tablachina". In this way, indigenous Canary Islanders were used as elite troops in the assault on Tenochtitlan, Mexico, early 16th century. This new work of the Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario, focuses on the traditional Tolete, its characteristic grip with one hand in the center, the guards (right, troquiada, ...) and the basic techniques (correderas, vueltas, lazos, molinetes...), as well as its application in combat combinations. In the traditional Tolete canario the objective is to break the armed hand of the attacker and to finish off in a forceful way with a definitive blow. There are no controls or reductions. The opposite happens with its police application, where the proportionality to the aggression and even the aggressor's own integrity is protected by law. The military application does not have these limitations, but its use as defense by the military police does. The characteristics of the Tactical Operational Tolete for the operations of civilian and military police forces favor these aspects as it is an extremely versatile implement. Its dimensions and central grip with effective wrist turns facilitate rapid and repeated striking movements to the armed hand, enabling both its cancellation and the consequent control for an effective reduction, thus preserving the life of the agent and eliminating the threat with the minimum of injury.

A knight in shining armor is a man who has never had his metal truly tested
The tip of the spear
The night is lit by torches and explosions. Four armored knights/soldiers clad with the colors of their units and the sigils of their countries. In their hands are breaching tools from hammers to explosives and daggers dangle from their belts for close work.
Are we so far removed from the knight on his horse or is there a direct link between the Greek hoplite to the European Knight to the modern wars? We still wear armor and helmets although they are made of different materials. Soldiers wear plates and special clothes to protect them from shrapnel and stabbings ranging from Kevlar to metal mesh similar to the hauberk and chainmail of old. We now use daggers not so different from the rondel daggers of old times where knights finished fights up close with a dagger between plates of the slits of the helm.
The Kuryo arts of the east are well known to all in film, in practice and in the military arms. Now, the west is rising and a shining example of this is Buhurt.
To those who are yet to learn about this exciting resurgence of tournament fighting, it is a full contact fighting sport originated from tournament fighting of the days of cold steel fighting to find and recognize the best knight and group in years of little bloodshed.
A strong proponent of this art is Dušan Ljubisavljevi ć of Serbia. He serves in the Serbian police as well as serving in the reserves. He is already a decade veteran of this martial art and speaks highly of the brotherhood, the excitement and the accolades to be won in the tournaments and during training.
Imagine being clad in armor, a helm on your head and a two handed sword in your gauntlets. You are facing an opponent wishing to defeat you with his sword and shield or axe or halberd. There are rules and experienced judges and for example only in the pro fights it is allowed to fell your opponent.
Unlike cage fights here we have melee fights where groups of five, twelve, twenty one or thirty face each other in organized groups. There are even mass fights where over a hundred armored fighters on each side face each other with steel and grit.
The old adage of last man standing governs the melee and the group who still has standing members at the end of the fight is declared the winner.
One of my own sparks with this revival is the multiple opponent engagement and the intrinsic geometry of contact in such clashes. As a student of history and martial art, I find the open melee the true test of a martial artist and find joy in the footwork, the angles of contact and the ever-changing sound of steel on steel.
Dušan is a warrior in armor fighting with the white eagles of Belgrade. They compete in various tournaments and placed second in Italy and third in Belgrade in the five vs five fight.
Fighting with weapons and in armor is very different than fighting in most martial arts and in the streets. Your vision is confined to the helm slits or holes and your movement is hampered by the surrounding slates of metal and leather. In your hands there is a sword which inflicts fear, thrust and the clashing on steel on steel. Your opponent is clad as you are and his axe impacts you on your helm, sending shock and pain through your system. You may be alone, or you may be a part of a team. It is not the one on one we are used to see in cage fights and sports matches. Here we have a dire reminder of the reality of actual fighting. While you may be swifter or have better technique from one opponent, it is a different reality when facing two or more opponents and especially when they are clad in armor and have long halberds in their gauntlets.
Another aspect of Buhurt is the equal opportunity given to both men and women to fight and test their metal. Behind the cold steel, your adversary is nameless and faceless. Only the intent and the colors of the team on their coat of arms lets you know who is on your side and who is on the other side of the blade.
Will this martial art aid you in a dark alley or in uniform? The definitive answer is yes. One clear advantage of Buhurt is learning to face multiple opponents and we are often charged with different objects from sticks to knives which exist in all shapes and forms within the tournaments and practice sessions. One unique facet of this art is the combination of arms and armor. Avi Nardia, whose devotion to Kendo and the martial arts of the east knows no bound saw himself as a kid in a candy shop with the opportunity to join in combat of such terms. Avi was able to demonstrate the ken of sword in different surroundings and rules of engagement and to witness the clash of historical battles in modern times.
Here the practitioners learn to move and fight within the confines of armor and those who serve in uniform of which Avi is no stranger, are also similarly clad in plates of armor and gloves. In their hands they often hold large metal hammers and riot shields to deflect the attacks and projectiles cast their way. There are few martial arts which offer such a rich and colorful history, a concurrent effect on armed and unarmed combat and the joy of holding a sword in your hand and swinging it with your team mates in combat.
In conclusion, All of us once held a stick in our hand, imagining it is a sword as we fought with our friends or with the wind. Some make it a reality and learn lessons of tactics, strength of character under the hammer blows and the serenity coming from going through such a gauntlet willingly.
More than a century ago, in our cities, men of different social classes still resorted to sword and saber duels to settle their disputes and in the streets one could meet thugs and muggers ready to use a knife. Times when it was common for a gentleman to leave the house with his cane, often animated, i.e. equipped with a hidden blade. Starting from the treatise of Master G. Martinelli (1908) "Trattato di scherma con bastone da passeggio" interpreted and integrated according to the methodology of the Nova Scrimia, masters Chiaramonte, Galvani, Girlanda and Proietti present a complete work on the use of the cane, which even today can be extremely valid and effective. For cane fencing, Martinelli draws inspiration from the Italian school of saber, with a classical approach, as well as boxing as a means of selfdefense: guard, strikes, parries, feints, spinning and circling steps, jumps, strong blows to the hand, arm, groin and terrifying jabs to the face. The stick placed in good hands is as good as a saber. Of course, it does not cut or pierce, it does not kill, but it brings to reason and, if necessary, brings even the fiercest offender to his knees.

This second work on knife is primarily aimed at those who already have an idea of the biomechanics of close combat movement. Master Skogorev explains in detail some techniques of knife work, such as the basic motor function in defense and attack, the proper position to move and react to the enemy's actions, ways of grasping a knife (hidden and open) and the quick and instantaneous response of defense and attack. Everything is performed according to the principles based on the methods of elimination of the opponent, such as physical balance and knowledge of the strike zones on body and limbs. In the section of knife against knife, these options should not be considered as options of knife fighting, it is only a variant of the use of one's own weapon against the opponent's knife, everything is built exclusively in the environment of self-defense. Also shown is the work of knife against stick, as a method to obtain a real representation of the impact force and speed in a real action. All this in an easy and simple way if you have previously studied the previous lessons. With thanks to all, D. Skogorev, Systemа SV. 76 Min.

Uten Azamuki: The art of confusing your opponent during combat
“If your forces are smaller, prepare for defense; if they are superior, attack; but if the enemy is well prepared, look for the way to disorient him and defeat him by surprise.”
(Sun Tzu)
Introduction
In traditional Japanese martial arts, effectiveness lies not only in strength or technique, but also in the ability to strategically confuse the opponent. This approach is echoed in the philosophy of Sun Tzu, who in his work “The Art of War” states: “All war is based on deception.” Just as Sun Tzu preached the importance of disorienting the enemy to ensure victory, Japanese martial arts value subtlety and cunning in combat.
An example of this strategy is the concept of “Uten Azamuki” (雨天欺き ), a type of strategic study cultivated and maintained at our school. Literally translated as “rainy weather”, this term goes beyond its literal meteorological interpretation to refer to a technique of deception in combat, where the unexpected becomes a powerful weapon. In this way, the practitioner, the student, initially understands that Uten Azamuki involves the use of unexpected techniques to divert attention and create opportunities for attack,
Thus, during the studies, the practitioner seeks to create conditions to destabilize the opponent, breaking his concentration, his focus and presenting a movement not expected for the moment in which he finds himself. This line of thinking is in line with the strategic concepts presented in works such as Sun Tzu's “The Art of War”, in the following points:
1. Pretend to rest while advancing.
2. When you are far away, appear to be close and, when you are close, pretend to be far away.
3. Playing tricks (for example, the illusion of weakness) to tempt your opponent.
4. Confusing the enemy with false signals and information.
5. Prepare for a powerful enemy, but avoid him if he is too strong.
6. If he seems upset or angry, try to irritate him.
7. If it is resting, force it to expend energy.
8. If you are united, introduce conflict into your midst.
9. Attack when you are least prepared.
10. Advance when he's not expecting it
In practice, this means that a practitioner must always be aware not only of his own movement, but also of the flow of combat, looking for points of weakness in the opponent's guard and manipulating his perceptions. This principle is evidenced in various techniques, where the unexpected movement of the katana, for example, can create a crucial opening in combat, as Uten Azamuki advocates. The art of war, therefore, is not just a battle of strength, but a game of the mind, where victory is achieved not by destroying the enemy, but by disorientating them and eventually capitulating.
Uten Azamuki: The Technique in Detail
Uten Azamuki is a technique that challenges the opponent's expectations and perception by changing the way the Japanese sword, or katana, is normally carried and wielded in combat. In most Japanese fencing traditions, the katana is carried at the waist, with the blade facing upwards and tilted slightly forward, ready to be drawn quickly and fluidly. This natural position allows the practitioner to execute attack and defense movements with agility and precision, and is one of the foundations of kenjutsu and iaijutsu.
However, the Uten Azamuki technique subverts this convention. Instead of carrying the sword at the waist, the practitioner moves the katana to the back, with the saya (scabbard) also positioned there. This unusual position not only changes the dynamics of the sword's draw, but also confuses the opponent, who is used to reacting to the standard movements of drawing the katana from the waist.
When the katana is moved to the back, the draw becomes an unexpected action and, for the opponent, difficult to predict. The change in angle and position of the sword makes the trajectory of the blow different from what would be expected in a typical fight. The opponent, seeing the fighter with the sword behind his back, may underestimate the speed and effectiveness of the attack that follows, since the inverted position seems to make it difficult to draw and cut.
This technique requires not only technical skill, but also a deep understanding of body mechanics and the fluid movement of the katana. Drawing the sword from the back requires considerable strength and flexibility, as well as perfect timing to ensure that the blow hits the target before the opponent has time to react.
Uten Azamuki's genius lies in how he plays on his opponent's perception. By presenting an apparently disadvantageous stance - the sword behind the back, out of a natural attacking position - the practitioner lulls the opponent into a false sense of security. At the crucial moment, the quick and precise draw of the katana surprises the opponent, exploiting their confusion and uncertainty.
In addition, the movement of the sword from the back creates a visual effect that can be difficult for the opponent to process correctly amid the adrenaline of combat. The time it takes for the opponent to understand the change in position and react can be decisive, allowing the Uten Azamuki practitioner to hit their target with an effectiveness that would be impossible with a more conventional approach.
The old masters also taught us that, during this moment, the fighter keeps his hand in front of him, making it look like he is holding the katana in the traditional way. However, when the opponent tries to attack, the master counterattacks from a totally unexpected angle. This surprise move is at the heart of Uten Azamuki, where the fighter turns the unpredictable into a lethal advantage.
Another example that the masters teach involves the ability to anticipate the opponent's attack and respond in a way that they don't expect. If the opponent tries to cut from a certain angle, the Uten Azamuki practitioner can make a move that confuses the attack, deflecting it completely. The aim is always to trick the opponent into believing that the attack will come from one side, when in fact it will come from another.
What makes the Uten Azamuki so effective is the way it subverts expectations. In a fight, it's common for both sides to have a preconceived idea of how the fight will unfold. However, the Uten Azamuki breaks this predictability. The katana, which would normally be in a predictable position, is placed differently, almost hidden. When it is finally drawn, the cut comes from a completely surprising angle, leaving the opponent no time to react.
The Biological Vision in Uten Azamuki
The success of the Uten Azamuki is not only due to clever strategy, but also to the way the technique takes advantage of the limitations and vulnerabilities of the human visual system. Biologically, human vision is highly dependent on patterns and expectations to quickly process the surrounding environment. When a fighter sees the position of a katana, his brain automatically compares this vision with familiar patterns from previous fights, anticipating the opponent's next moves.
However, the Uten Azamuki breaks this cycle of visual recognition. By adopting an unexpected stance or moving the sword in an atypical way, positioning it on the back, the warrior using this technique confuses the opponent's visual processing mechanisms. The opponent's brain, trained to expect certain positions and movements, mistakenly perceives the katana stance as natural and familiar, when in fact it is being prepared for a totally unexpected blow.
This dissonance between what is seen and what is actually happening is what makes the Uten Azamuki so effective. Human vision tends to rely on contextual clues to make quick assumptions, but when these clues are deliberately manipulated, the opponent's perception becomes vulnerable. The result is a critical hesitation, a moment of confusion that can be exploited to attack from a surprising, often lethal angle.
The Sensory Aspect of Uten Azamuki
In addition, the effectiveness of Uten Azamuki is deeply rooted in the sensory mechanisms and response times of the human body, especially with regard to visual processing and physical reaction. When a fighter observes the movement of his opponent, the visual information captured by the eyes is quickly transmitted to the brain for processing. This process, which takes place in milliseconds, involves analyzing the position, speed and direction of the observed movement, allowing the brain to make quick decisions about how to react.
However, this visual processing speed is not instantaneous. There is a brief delay between the moment the light reflected by the object (in this case, the opponent's katana that will use the Uten Azamuki technique) hits the retina and the moment the brain interprets this information and sends electrical signals to the muscles to initiate a motor response. This response time, although extremely fast, can still be exploited in combat, and this is exactly where the Uten Azamuki comes into play.
When the warrior uses the Uten Azamuki, he is deliberately playing with his opponent's response time. By making unexpected or non-standard movements, the fighter causes confusion in the opponent's visual processing. The opponent's brain, trained to recognize and react to patterns and common movements, is forced to re-evaluate the situation. This creates an additional delay while the brain tries to interpret what is happening and formulate an appropriate response.
This delay can be crucial. In hand-to-hand combat, where fractions of a second can determine the outcome of a battle, any hesitation or confusion in the interpretation of movement can be the difference between blocking a blow or being hit. Uten Azamuki exploits this split second to the full, creating a decisive opening.
Once the visual information has been processed and the brain has decided how to react, it sends electrical impulses to the muscles to initiate the action. Again, there is a brief delay while these signals travel through the nervous system, triggering the physical reaction. If the opponent has been fooled by the Uten Azamuki, they may react to an attack that is no longer there, or they may not have enough time to react to the real blow being delivered.
Uten Azamuki: The Neurological Perspective of Deception and Surprise in Combat
Uten Azamuki can also be approached from the perspective of neurobiology, looking at aspects related to perception and the response to deception, to the confusion caused in the opponent. In the context of a fight, the opponent's brain is constantly processing visual, auditory and tactile information to predict and react to the opponent's movements. However, when confronted with the Uten Azamuki, this processing chain is interrupted, creating a critical window for the practitioner to execute their attack.
When the opponent prepares to attack, their brain is already engaged in a series of decisions. The expectation is that the opponent's response will come from a predictable position and movement, usually with the sword being drawn from the waist. This anticipation creates a mental “certainty”, where the opponent's brain aligns itself with a sequence of expected actions - observation of the movement, prediction of the trajectory, muscular preparation for defense or attack, and execution.
However, the Uten Azamuki breaks this cycle by presenting an atypical movement, with the sword being drawn from the practitioner's back. When the opponent notices this unexpected variation, there is a dissonance between what they expected to happen and what is actually happening. This moment of surprise forces the brain to quickly recalculate the situation, creating a crucial delay in the response.
Neurologically, surprise activates the limbic system, which includes structures such as the amygdala, responsible for processing emotions such as fear and surprise. When it detects something unexpected, the brain sends out warning signals that can cause a brief paralysis, a moment of hesitation while trying to understand the new situation. In this short interval, the visual signals are re-evaluated and the motor system's response is delayed, giving the Uten Azamuki practitioner the opportunity to attack successfully.
In addition, the fact that the attack comes from behind the practitioner's back adds another layer of complexity to the scenario. The opponent's peripheral vision may not pick up the initial movement of the sword, and the reaction time needed to adjust to an attack coming from an unexpected angle increases. This time difference, although minimal, is enough for the counter-attack to be effective.
The effectiveness of the Uten Azamuki lies in the combination of visual deception and the manipulation of the opponent's neurological expectations. When the certainty of a successful attack dissolves into surprise and confusion, the opponent is caught in a state of maximum vulnerability, unable to react quickly enough to defend themselves properly. This neurological aspect underlines the importance of techniques that not only involve physical skill, but also the manipulation of human perception and response in combat.
Uten Azamuki: The Psychological Break between Full and Empty in Combat
Uten Azamuki is a technique that not only challenges the opponent's physical expectations, but also profoundly shatters their psychological certainties. In traditional Japanese martial arts, the relationship between “full” and “empty” is a fundamental concept, where what seems solid and certain can suddenly turn into something illusory and misleading.
In the context of a fight, the opponent operates within a paradigm of certainty - the “full”. They believe they have understood the situation, assessing the practitioner's positioning and anticipating their movements. When the Uten Azamuki practitioner positions himself to draw his katana, the opponent expects the movement to be linear and predictable, based on the tradition of drawing the sword from the waist and its possible variations from this natural position. This expectation is “full” - a state of confidence and certainty.
However, Uten Azamuki inverts this logic by introducing “emptiness”. By drawing the katana from an unusual position, from the back, the practitioner makes the opponent confront the unexpected. Certainty dissolves into emptiness, as what was a solid expectation becomes a blind spot. This emptiness isn't just physical - it's a mental and emotional rupture, where the opponent realizes that their understanding of the moment has been completely shattered.
Psychologically, this paradigm shift generates a state of disorientation and vulnerability. The opponent, when confronted with the void, experiences a kind of cognitive shock. The mind, accustomed to operating within familiar and predictable patterns, is suddenly disarmed when what seemed right turns out to be illusory. This shock generates hesitation - a space between the stimulus and the response, where certainty is replaced by doubt.
This transition from “full” to “empty” creates a strategic opening for the Uten Azamuki practitioner. By shaking up the opponent's perception, he introduces a critical moment of confusion and uncertainty, in which the counter-attack can be carried out effectively. The opponent, who had mentally prepared for a specific type of confrontation, now faces a totally different reality - and this dissonance is where the strength of the Uten Azamuki lies.
This technique, therefore, is not just a question of physical skill, but also of psychological manipulation. By mastering the art of creating “emptiness” where there was once “fullness”, the practitioner is able to destabilize the opponent, transforming their certainty into uncertainty, and their confidence into vulnerability. Uten Azamuki exemplifies how, in combat, control of the opponent's mind can be as decisive as control of the sword.
Uten Azamuki: The Subversion of Lateralism in Katana Combat
In Japanese martial arts, the sword is traditionally carried on the left, facilitating a quick, fluid right-handed draw towards the opponent. This movement has become a standard expectation in confrontations, creating predictability in the flow of attacks. However, the Uten Azamuki technique breaks this norm by shifting the point of origin of the attack, subverting conventional laterality and introducing an element of devastating surprise.
In Uten Azamuki, the katana is positioned behind the practitioner's back, rather than to the left side. Instead of a classic serve from the left side, the serve takes place from an inverted position, from the right side of the back. This positioning challenges the expectations of the opponent, who is conditioned to anticipate attacks coming from the left side of the opponent's body. This change not only disorients the opponent, but also creates a new dynamic on the field of combat, where the point of origin of the attack is less predictable.
From a biomechanical point of view, this reversal requires adaptation from both the practitioner and the opponent. While most katana attacks start from a linear, horizontal movement on the left side, the Uten Azamuki forces the practitioner to make a serve that crosses his body diagonally, from right to left, from an inverted position. This movement creates an unusual arc of attack, which can pass through angles that are not easily read or anticipated by the opponent.
By shifting the focus away from traditional laterality, the Uten Azamuki makes use of surprise to generate a strategic advantage. The opponent, conditioned to defend attacks that follow the classic pattern of serving from the left, finds himself at a disadvantage by having to adjust his perception and response to an attack that comes from an unexpected angle. This subversion of laterality creates a window of opportunity for the practitioner to deliver a decisive blow while the opponent is still trying to process the abrupt change in the flow of combat.
In addition, the technique challenges the psychological conditioning of the opponent, who often associates the left side with a safe reference point for calculating their defensive and offensive movements. When this reference is inverted, the opponent momentarily loses control of the situation, which opens up space for the surprise blow characteristic of Uten Azamuki.
Uten Azamuki: Conclusions and insights
Uten Azamuki reveals a deep understanding of the psychological and strategic dynamics involved in combat, where physical strength and technical skill are only part of the picture. At its core, this technique goes beyond direct confrontation, using confusion and surprise as its primary weapons. By challenging the predictability that is often established on the battlefield, Uten Azamuki stands out as an example of how strategy can destabilize the opponent, creating openings that would be inaccessible by conventional methods.
Uten Azamuki's main characteristic lies in its ability to manipulate the opponent's expectations. The change from the traditional laterality, where the katana is normally carried on the left side, to a position on the back, subverts the opponent's conditioning. This change is not merely an aesthetic variation, but a strategy designed to break the normal flow of combat, introducing an element of surprise that confuses both visual perception and the opponent's motor response. From this break in expectation, the practitioner is able to introduce an unexpected attack, exploiting the fractions of a second in which the opponent tries to adjust his defense to this new reality.
From a neurological point of view, Uten Azamuki explores how the human brain processes patterns and reacts to visual and kinetic stimuli. In combat, the opponent tends to anticipate movements based on past experiences and known patterns, automatically reacting to what their brain perceives as predictable. However, when confronted with a posture and movement that departs from this logic, there is a brief interruption in the response process. This moment of hesitation, however slight, is enough to allow the practitioner to deliver a decisive blow, often before the opponent has time to adjust their reaction. In addition to the neurological impact, there is also a significant psychological factor at play.
Uten Azamuki destabilizes the opponent's confidence by turning certainty into doubt. In combat, confidence in one's own readings and predictions is fundamental to an effective response. When this confidence is undermined by the introduction of the unexpected, the opponent finds themselves in a fragile position, where doubt becomes their greatest adversary. By creating this rupture, the Uten Azamuki practitioner takes control of the situation, transforming the apparent disadvantage into a strategic advantage.
This concept of manipulation between “full” and “empty” in combat, present in many martial traditions, is taken to a new level with Uten Azamuki. The technique illustrates how emptiness - uncertainty, lack of predictability - can be used as a weapon as lethal as the blade itself. By hiding the true point of origin of the attack and defying convention, the practitioner creates a space of vulnerability in the opponent, where the mind tries to fill the void with answers that don't fit the reality of combat.
Ultimately, Uten Azamuki is not just a combat technique, but a philosophy of war where victory is achieved not just by attacking skill, but by the ability to disorient, surprise and manipulate the enemy. It reminds us that, in the art of war, control over the opponent's mind, the exploitation of their expectations and the creation of the unexpected are as decisive elements as physical strength and technical prowess. Thus, Uten Azamuki remains a timeless example of the integration of strategy, psychology and combat, keeping the tradition of Japanese martial arts alive while adapting to the modern needs of confrontation.

In this fourth work, Justo Dieguez, creator of the Keysi Fighting Method, focuses on the area of grabs and traps. We will see 10 technical sequences in which the grab, the trap, are the objective, although it will be treated as a consequence. At KEYSI we do not think beforehand about performing a grab, it is something that will be the consequence of a certain situation. In a risk situation, your senses connect you with your environment, you are pure instinct, auditory, visual and contact. This ability allows you to focus your concentration, recognize your surroundings and decide what actions to take. It is you with your mental capacity that makes everything a weapon, a wall, a corner, a step, etc. On the street, in a real situation, the rules don't work. With technique you are not going to achieve your goals. Technique is that bridge that will get you to the target, but it is not the target. In a risky situation, instinctive responsiveness has to prevail over technique. When you train with this mentality you know that a millisecond can be vital. You understand that you don't have the possibility to extend the time, that you can't play on your opponent's patience or ability to manipulate him. You understand that you are at a complete disadvantage, that your response must be explosive and that you have to get out of there.

Solutions for the protection and defense of armed forces Security solutions at the highest level
In today's world, security forces and law enforcement agencies are facing increasingly complex threats that require both flexibility and speed to counter. Solutions for protection and defense must be designed with a high level of performance and at the same time be mission-oriented. They must not only ensure the safety of officers, but also be effective in a variety of scenarios, from everyday hazards to critical crisis situations. This is precisely where the OLIVA Combat System comes in, a globally recognized and revolutionary training system developed specifically for the challenges of modern security forces.
OLIVA Combat System A revolutionary training system
The OLIVA Combat System provides realistic and practical training that enables emergency services to practice defensive techniques and tactical movements in a safe, strategic environment. It allows the replication of real-life defense situations in light, fast deployment modules. The combination of fast action and tactical precision trained in these modules makes it an indispensable resource for security and law enforcement officers worldwide. From officers in the field to military forces, the goal is to improve operational capabilities and maximize protection against threats.
Specialization and an understanding of different threat levels are crucial for security and defense solutions. A clear division into modules helps to respond efficiently to different threats and to take the appropriate measures in good time. For security and law enforcement officers, this means that technical knowledge must be combined with tactical skills in order to be able to act immediately in an emergency. The three modules, which are based on different threat levels like a kind of “defense traffic light”, are indispensable tools for this.
Module 1: Green Latent threat
The focus here is on prevention. Even if there is no immediate danger, emergency services must not become complacent. It is of the utmost importance to identify potential vulnerabilities and take security precautions. This includes regular security checks and increasing situational awareness. This helps to develop a keen eye for risks that could easily be overlooked in everyday life.
Module 2: Orange Heightened awareness
When the signs of a threat become more concentrated, security forces must switch to maximum alertness. In this phase, it is not just about being prepared, but actively planning countermeasures. Technical training solutions, such as advanced targeting systems and ballistics training, help to prepare emergency services for these situations. Detailed security procedures are also optimized at this stage to enable a rapid response.
Module 3: Red Serious threat
When faced with an imminent threat, it is essential that all the cogs mesh perfectly. There is no room for uncertainty. Security forces must be able to fully rely on their training, equipment and tactics. Ballistic shields, specially developed defense solutions and the flexibility of the instructors are crucial here. In this phase, every second counts – and every decision must be spot on.
Key aspects of structural target hardening and defense solutions
Security forces are only as strong as their preparation. This includes a range of measures that go well beyond standard procedures. Here is a summary of the most important defense approaches:
• Target hardening and defense solutions: This encompasses the entire process of improving security, from identifying potential hazards to implementing customized protective solutions.
• Increasing security and situational awareness: A trained eye for unusual behavior or potential threats is key to prevention. This skill must be sharpened in regular training.
• A clear view of potential vulnerabilities: Only those who know their vulnerabilities can protect themselves effectively. Vulnerability assessments are therefore among the most important measures in the defense strategy.
• Detailed improvements to security procedures: Every detail counts when it comes to security. Regular updates and adjustments to security processes are essential to respond to new threats.
Protection against threats from individuals: In particular, protection against attacks by armed or dangerous individuals is a key issue. Ballistic shields and tactical response shields are used here to protect officers and the surrounding area.
Ballistic protection: Whether for stationary or mobile use, ballistic protection systems must be flexible and extremely robust at the same time.
• Tactical training solutions: Advanced target systems, shooting practice and scenario training ensure that emergency services are prepared for all eventualities. Training scenarios must be realistic and versatile, especially in confined or urban spaces.
• Threat and vulnerability assessments: Regular security reviews help to identify and eliminate potential vulnerabilities at an early stage.
• Training in ballistics and explosives: The ability to be prepared for explosive threats or ballistic attacks is vital in many operational scenarios.
• Specifically designed defense solutions: No single solution fits all situations. Defense solutions must therefore be tailored and flexibly adapted to the requirements of different security forces.
Flexibility of tactical instructors: The success of security operations depends to a large extent on the flexibility and knowledge of the instructors. They must be able to adapt their training modules dynamically to different threat scenarios.
Increased variety of training scenarios in a small space: Training rooms are often limited. This makes it all the more important that solutions can be effectively trained in a short time and in a small space.
Conclusion: technology and tactics for maximum security
Security forces and law enforcement agencies are faced with the challenge of adapting to constantly evolving threats. One thing remains certain: only through constant training, clear procedures and customized defense solutions can security forces successfully complete their missions. Structural hardening, combined with tactical training solutions and technical precision, ensures that officers and security forces are prepared for any situation. It is not only the systems, but above all the understanding and specialization of the emergency services that make the difference between success and failure.
“For maximum security in law enforcement and defense, it is essential to combine technology and tactics in perfectly coordinated, effective and realistic modules.”
