In this second video of the series, Justo Diéguez, creator of the KFM Keysi Fighting Method, teaches us to systematically implement the tools on which the principles and concepts of the method are based, starting from patterns and basic sequences of defense against middle distance fist attacks. Preface to the book “Surfear el Tsunami”, by Alfredo Tucci Until a year ago… we still didn't know! We didn't know that step by step, life was about to provide us with the greatest opportunity for evolution! And in fact, day after day, the tsunami that flooded the world has cut us all away! Everything that apparently seemed fundamental to us. At first it seemed like a joke, just a bad dream, after a year, we begin to realize that it is happening "right in our life". But what is happening ... Alfredo Tucci with his book “Surfear el Tsunami” (Surfare lo Tsunami) explains it to us extensively, albeit always leaving that necessary space for curiosity, which serves to keep the attention high. Alfredo Tucci is an artist of life, always willing to get involved in noble causes, especially when it comes to great revolutions. With his pen, the expression of his irreducible research spirit, he has fought numerous battles. His creature, Budo International, has reached the farthest countries, has spoken in all the languages that are common to us, and now also in Russian, Chinese and Japanese (beyond the Tsunami...). Martial arts in the 21st century - between the traditional and the modern We are all aware of various forms of tradition, but when this phrase needs to be defined, it can become confusing. Namely, a rule that repeats itself from generation to generation is called tradition. Tr a d i t i o n is something that doesn't bend t h e r u l e s , something that repeats itself for many years, from generation to generation, in a continuum, without any changes. The term "tradition” (lat. t r a d e r e = t o t r a n s f e r, a transferral) is defined as a memory of or preservation of stories and customs from the past. They are transferred from generation to generation, honoring the procedures which are sometimes not even written, but are transferred from mouth to mouth. If we say that someone is traditional, it means that he or she is conventional, common and predictable. He or she strictly follows customs and r ules

that were made a long time ago by an agreement. It can simply be said that the term "traditional” or "conventional” can refer to someone who behaves according to some old rules and norms, not wanting to impose some new customs because this set of r ules was alr eady established. This kind of a person doesn't seek something that needs to be necessarily new or modern. Today, when we say that someone is "modern”, it means that he or she is in accordance with the times, whereas the person who is not is somewhat lagging behind. In today's times, taking up martial arts comes in two variables- as a warrior -martial art or as a sports discipline. In accordance with that, there are two basic ways in which martial arts can be dealt with. The first one is training, i.e. the traditional way wher e a person perfects certain techniques and the warrior-martial skill as a whole. The second one is taking up martial arts as a modern sports discipline. Training martial arts in a traditional way includes a much larger aspect of philosophical thinking and following a certain code of honor. In sports, this aspect is not necessar y and, therefore, neglected.

o, we can ask ourselves should martial arts be solely traditional or can we strive towards certain changes and new ways of thinking? Also, should we accept everything that is modern by living according to those new principles and by cultivating this new set of rules which can sometimes be distorted? Or should tradition help us find the original and forgotten rules that serve life? In martial arts we can often hear how certain "styles” are "traditional” while some other styles are thought to be modern. But which of these styles are truly "modern”?

Modern is something that is happening right now. In Latin, it literally means "modo”= right now, and that which preceded it became post modern. This means that many of these newer, i.e. "more modern” styles after some time become post modern, i.e. they are simply not in trend any longer. Because of their inefficiency, certain styles become neglected or even forgotten. Solely those styles that have proved themselves to be the best and most efficient, thanks to their tehniques as well as principles and rules, gradually became traditional . Often, for this kind of style or way of training a martial art, the term "old school” is used. Each new period brings

certain changes. Because of this, when certain martial arts masters introduce improvements in various, so to speak, traditional styles, this doesn't mean that the style has been changed in any significant way. To improve a style, make it more contemporary and modernize it doesn't mean that it will be changed from traditional to some new version because, in its core, it will remain unchanged. All important techniques, rules and customs of that style as well as its code of honor will be unaltered. Changes in a certain style start when some instructors want to create a new, more contemporary style for

themselves. By doing this, they change the basic techniques. In other words, the changes start when those instructors start to distort some of the basic techniques, the rules and the customs of the "older” style, i.e. by altering most of the basic techniques, rules and customs of the traditional style. Some of these instructors have even made certain damages and have ruined the traditional style because they thought that the changes were essential and necessary. By doing so, they have created a newer, different and, according to their opinion, a better and "more modern” style.

But is this new style truly better and more efficient in comparison with the older one? It is certainly different. Perhaps it, in some ways, follows today's way of thinking as well as trends. Maybe it is even more popular now, but that still doesn't mean that it is necessarily better or more efficient. For a certain techniques, most of these changes and changes to the rules and customs have proved to be unnecessary and, what is keyinefficient. However, from time to time, some true martial arts masters appeared and made certain "important” changes to a style as well as in martial arts in general. These kinds of changes took place in martial arts during Bodhidharma's life and his introduction of the Luohan 18 hands in 520 AD. Other martial arts masters have made important changes as well, for example, the new techniques in nito-ryu sword fighting introduced by the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645). Changes also happened in the West, i.e. in 1867 the Marquess of Queensberry published the first systemic rules for boxing. In 1899, changes were introduced by Edward Barton-Wright by opening a club in London where many Western and Eastern martial arts could be trained, e.g. boxing, wrestling, savate, fencing, judo and ju jitsu. Changing tradition in martial arts has continued later on, for example, introducing the rule to wear a white kimono and a black belt was introduced by the master Jigoro Kano (1860 – 1938). The changes occurred when the masters from Okinawa decided to break the family teaching tradition and show their skill to the rest of the Japanese nation. This is when they have come up with the idea that it would be better if the national skill would be called karate (an empty hand or a hand of emptiness), rather than to call it by its original name- Chinese hand.

This transition in meaning was easily made because the word "kara” can hold a different meaning, depending on the way it is written. This act or renaming the skill is usually attributed to Funakoshi Gichin, the founder of the Shotokan style although the change was suggested by the master Chomo Hanashiro. The word itself was introduced in 1936 as the new name. From this moment forward, the development of karate, as well as some other martial arts, turned to a different direction – a sport emerges. The changes also started wi t h r a n k i n g a ccording to the color of the belt, introduced by a judo master, Mikonosuke Kawaishi (1899 – 1969). Larger changes were also made by the master

Yip Man (1893 – 1972) once he came up with a practicing device, the wooden dummy. Changes were established in teaching martial arts as well in a way that, teaching of those martial arts which were previously traditionally "forbidden” for foreigners, started to become accessible to everyone, no matter their race or sex. We can also mention numerous demonstrations of different martial arts and showing of their previously "secret” techniques to people in the West. Some of these demonstrations were started by Bruce Lee (1940 – 1973) as well as some other changes which are, in today's martial arts, common and have become traditional because of that.

Then and now! Many today's sports trainers as well as some martial arts instructors have been neglecting traditional and old methods of teaching and learning how to practice. They defend this by saying that those old methods are outdated in today's times. They think of them as inefficient, especially in some today's "modern” martial arts. The real truth is somewhat different. Namely, many today's instructors and, even more so, sports trainers never really knew everything about traditional training methods so they couldn't entirely reap their benefits. This is why they prefer to stick to newer and more familiar methods of training which they have gone over themselves. New generations bring new methods and, consequently, new rules in training which are, allegedly, scientifically-based. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they are better. Some old systems of training could be funny or totally incomprehensible for today's trainees, i.e. sportsmen. We will name just a few examples of different modes of training between old martial arts masters and today's instructors. For example, if a student can even be accepted to a certain school, he needs to come into class several days in a row, sometimes even longer. The master, supposedly, didn't have the time to admit him right away. And so new students would come and wait in front of the hall (dojo) for the master to take them in. Those who wouldn't be patient enough and persevere would give up at the very beginning.

Old martial arts teachers would sometimes throw a student out if they would notice a flaw in his character (boasting, uncontrollable aggressiveness, lying, stinginess or greediness) which the student could have corrected if he wanted to. If today's instructor singled out a student because of some flaw he has, that student will probably change his

instructor or move to a different club sooner than work on his character, his habits and opinions. Before, a student couldn't enter the dojo without bowing to his teacher first. Today, this custom is avoided and oftentimes neglected in certain schools and classes. This is why the traditional salute (bow) to the opponent while training or during competitions is often forgotten. Similar changes are happening in certain fencing clubs where trainees tend to omit the traditional salute with the fencing sword before they start the duel.

Before, the master cared about his student and served as a sort of a role model. Today, a regular sportsman has the following people looking out for him: instructor, assistant instructor, fitness coach, doctor or physiotherapist, nutritionist and a sports psychologist and his role model is usually an imaginary (oftentimes with false values), currently popular and famous actor or some other sportsperson. Before, martial arts masters taught their students about the need for meditation, zen philosophy or Taoism. Today, no one cares about that and sports psychologists know very little about a certain martial art or sport. In the past, alongside a prolonged training session, special notice was given to mental training and

strengthening one's concentration. This type of training is usually skipped today and is considered to be unnecessary. Before, trainees used to lean on their skills, whereas today their focus is their fitness level (physical strength, endurance etc.). During Winter months, old masters would send their students to waterfalls in order to train their concentration and meditate for 30 minutes in -15 degrees Celsius. Today's trainees are sometimes immersed into cold baths so they could "strengthen” their bodies and improve their blood flow, but this is usually done with no prior psychological preparation (meditation). Before, old masters knew how to use the attacking skill that affected acupuncture points on the human body

(Chinese dim-mak, Japanese kyusho, atemi), while today's instructors (trainers) can only speculate about it. Some old masters' skills are totally forgotten today. A lot of their knowledge and many skills are thought of as figments of one's imagination or a certain legend about a martial arts master and so they are not believed in. Some of the forgotten techniques haven't been seen for many years. Here are some examples of forgotten skills developed by old martial art masters which, in today's setting, sound unreal and fabricated. Among many incredible skills, we can take note of bullfights that were held on the mountainous island of

Crete (between Greece and Egypt) around 2000 to 1400 B.C. This skill can be seen on the above shown fresco which is located in a palace in Knossos. The bullfighting style of the African American fighter Bill Pickett, who fought around the year 1890, can also be mentioned here. He would bite the bull's lower lip and topple him down to the ground. The master Masutatsu Oyama also needs to be mentioned. He was famous for his fights with bulls during the 1960's where he would break their horns or even kill them during the duel. The shooting skill where the target is a smaller coin held between the assistant's two fingers (usually the

thumb and the forefinger) sounds unbelievable today. The skills was developed as a circus attraction in the time of Annie Oakley, around 1890. The technique called miang-chang (cotton or steel palm) which includes hand punches is also quite incredulous in today's terms. It was demonstrated by the master K. Chung in China around 1928. The technique was never fully revealed to the public. We can also mention the crashing technique tameshiwari, which is usually used by the kyokushinkai style masters. It uses hand punches and there are supposedly 3 known methods although they are also not entirely believed in. For today's terms, the performance of jumping leg kicks on the height of up to 3.5 meters also sounds amazing. These high jumps were performed by old masters from China and Korea. A similar technique was seen in the United States around 1977 by the master Joo Bang Lee who, in front of witnesses, jumped as high as 3 meters and 66 centimeters. We should also mention the knife throwing technique on big distances (around 10 meters) that are usually targeted towards balloons held by a partner's hands or between legs spinning on a wheel. Such a skill was a part of a circus attraction performed around 1935 (a similar act was seen in the James Bond movie Octopussy in 1983). The technique of performing remote punches by using one's inner bioenergy (by knowing the inner Chi energy) also

seems unbelievable. Moreover, this bioenergy was never fully researched or explained. The technique was mentioned in the chronicles of the Japanese swordsman M. Musashi, and it was seen by witnesses (Michael Minick) for the last time in San Francisco and Hong Kong in 1970 and 1973, respectively. Many of these aforementioned techniques sound unreal to today's martial arts instructors (trainers) and especially martial arts sportsmen. They are even described as fake and a product of one's imagination. Some sportsmen

sometimes even make fun of these, according to their opinion, "imaginary” skills. However, the fact that, even in today's time some "old school” martial arts masters, along with the knowledge of meditation and deep concentration, can force their bodies to make substantial efforts, some of them unimaginable to many contemporary sportsmen. They, in turn, observe them with great awe and respect. It should definitely be pointed out that, if you want to achieve a certain sports result, a lot of sacrifice needs to

be made. Sport as well as sports accomplishments have their rigorous rules which a sportsperson needs to abide by if he/she wants to succeed. A martial arts trainee's (traditional) or sportsman's practice can greatly differ. It is a common opinion that sportsmen train harder and more seriously, while "old school” trainees usually just use it as recreation. Such an opinion is total nonsense because it is known that some excellent "old school” martial arts masters used to turn themselves to extremely difficult and long trainings and the longevity of their practices used to be as much as 2x3 or sometimes even more hours. The great majority of these martial arts masters used to compete in the past, although this might not be the case for all of them. This rigorous training style can sometimes border

with fanaticism, i.e. a total devotion to training and perfecting a martial art. Also, it is a common opinion that "old school” martial arts trainees mostly just train technique that are in modern sports and according to the rules of sports fighting deemed as illegal. This is not true. These martial arts trainees usually study, train and experience a certain martial art in a much more complex and versatile way and their knowledge of the skill is much fuller and rounded in comparison with that of sportsmen. For example, performing katas (forms) that sportsmen do not execute just to train the skill or to know the technique (bunkai), but to perform it in order to impress the audience, the judges and to win trophies. You can oftentimes become a professional sportsman without really knowing the techniques, i.e. the sport that

you have chosen has a very narrow choice of techniques. You can know just a couple of techniques, in comparison to the vast and numerous spectrum of a certain martial arts techniques. For example, among 30 different kicks that are present in tae kwon do, the sportsmen- competitors usually perform only 5 – 6 different kicks. In karate, among 30 famous and acknowledged katas, the competitors usually use only 6 – 7 different ones. Many judo techniques have been excluded from judo - sport, e.g. techniques that used foot throws etc. A similar situation happened in other martial arts. However, all martial arts sports and their sportsmen were limited by sports rules and hence their choice of applicable techniques has been restricted. Becuase of that, many today's judo and karate trainees (sports coachs) forget the fact that, in the traditional judo technique, kick and punches exist and, in the karate technique, throws and locks are frequently used.

To d a y, t a b u l a t i o n s a re m a d e f o r e a c h i n d i v i d u a l sportsman's characteristic and, during training, various electronic techniques are used. Contemporary trainings are specially programmed and scientifically based and, at the same time, guided by educated professionals. And still, in various competitions and, more often, in fights between two competitors of the same or different styles, we can see that those trainees that were guided by a master that belongs to the "old school” and traditional school of training, those trainees usually win. It is obvious that the things that are thought of as traditional in martial arts have been such for centuries and have retained their original value. Also, we can quote the master Fumio Demura - "as you grow older, training becomes more personal, inter nal and traditional.”

Working out is a crucial element in ever y Muay Thai Boran practitioner’s instruction, in order to reach and maintain a superior fighting shape. Learning to perform the techniques without having the physical and mental attributes to put them into practice effectively is an unnecessary waste of time. Too many martial artists limit their training sessions to "complicated" self-defence maneuvers without caring about their overall physical conditioning. In many cases they don’t worry about r epr oducing in their workouts the psycho-physical stress that becomes one of the main hindering factors in the event of a ring contest or a street fight. No practitioner will ever reach a satisfying level, nor can he call himself a Nak Muay (Muay Thai practitioner) without spending time on a regular basis developing endurance, speed and strength, conditioning his bones and tendons and working out with sparring partners who try their best to “cause problems” for him.

Muay Boran t the same time, however, it is important to distinguish between a training aimed at reaching peak performance at a given time on the occasion of a special event (i.e. competitions, tournaments) and what we might call " training for life." In the first case, a good coach must bring the athlete to the limit of his possibilities by calculating that the top shape condition must be reached exactly at the time of the scheduled performance. Right after the contest, the athlete’s level of physical condition will tend to decrease, thus allowing his physiological recovery, before starting a new intensive training phase. This cycle will be repeated for a variable number of times until the end of the sports career of the athlete. Given that not everyone is fit to undergo the rigors of a competitive career, especially in hard combat sports such as Muay Thai, even the most gifted athlete cannot stand the workload needed to reach the level of fitness required to fight at a high level indefinitely (considering the physical injuries connected to the practice of extreme sports). The "training for life” system, on the contrary, must be structured in order to become an integral part of the daily life of any martial artist; at all times of the year, the physical training system illustrated here can be used as the basis for the daily workouts of an average Muay Thai Boran practitioner, young or mature. At specific times, the workload may be increased or decreased to meet the changing needs of the trainee, but training must never be neglected. Only in this way it is possible to maintain a level of fitness that, at any moment, allows the practitioner to properly apply the technical principles of the Siamese warriors.

The following four pillars form the bedrock of Muay Boran IMBA’s training system: I. Physical conditioning II. Impact training III. Sparring IV. Combat Forms Training Using these guidelines as a starting point, each instructor will have to determine individual routines for his students’ training. It must be noted that the use of standardized training schedules, identical for all kinds of athletes, must be avoided. No individual is equal to another and what is optimal for an athlete may be excessive or insufficient for another. Moreover, while Muay Thai is by definition an individual activity, in training in a Kai Muay (Muay Thai Gym), the ‘team’ element plays a fundamental role. Thai Masters express this concept with the saying “Khru Puk Luk Chum” which literally means learning through observation of others. According to many scholars of boxing techniques this part of learning is actually almost as important as the supervision and advice directly given by the Master. Observing seniors who undergo strenuous physical activity without stopping and showing no sign of fatigue, represents for new students a priceless experience. Continuous contact with expert practitioners teaches how to totally focus one’s mind during the various stages of a given training session.

• Training Pillar n. 1: Physical Conditioning Fighting fitness is based on four main components: Endurance Training, Power Training, Bone Conditioning and Energy Drills (the latter devised to develop a special kind of inner power called Phalang Yuth or Battle Energy, according to Siamese tradition). Among the many ways to train a fighter’s body, the main distinction that must be made is between general fitness and technique

Muay Boran specific drills. A typical example of general fitness exercise is road work, that is running on the road, as every combat sports practitioner knows. Likewise, calisthenics are one of the best ways to develop overall functional strength for athletes who need to increase their power without building up excessive muscle mass. The second category of drills is meant to train specific combat-oriented attributes. Shadow boxing, neck and forearms strengthening as well as all bone conditioning drills; these are specific exercises

designed to forge a Muay fighter’s body in order to prepare him for battle.

• Training Pillar n. 2: Impact Training a. Heavy bag work (Som Krasop). Hitting the heavy bag is the fundamental exercise for training “heavy” blows that can injure your opponent, whatever natural weapon may be employed to produce the

Hands, feet, shins, elbows, knees and (although to a much lesser extent) even the head, have to hit a bag on an almost daily basis to get powerful strikes, a solid bone structure and reactive and enduring muscles. b. Thai pads work (Som Pao). Pao mitts are unequalled as a mean to refine the combinations of strikes and to increase the explosiveness of each attack; therefore, their use should be included in every Nak Muay’s weekly training routines. By hitting these tools on a regular basis with kicks, fists, elbows and knees, great explosiveness can be developed and, as a result, the power of all attacks will be greatly enhanced. The goal is to have at one’s disposal an array of fighting tools capable of annihilating the opponent with the least possible number of blows, when the latter are properly directed against the enemy’s sensitive spots. From the introduction of new techniques and strategies (Mae Mai and Look Mai Muay Thai), to the development of muscle memory involved in the execution of advanced combinations of strikes, from the shortening of the reaction time in the execution of defense and counter blows, to the development of superior cardiovascular capability. These are just a few of the many possible uses of pad work that can give a definite edge to every trainee’s fighting attributes.

Muay Boran c. Iron post. The most peculiar tool used by Muay Boran IMBA practitioners to condition to the highest level the hands (knuckles, edge of hand, palm), forearms (radial and especially ulnar bone), shins, knees and feet (forefoot and heel) is the iron post. Made of a metal core covered by a thin layer of rubber or leather, fixed to a square base that allows small oscillations, the post is a fundamental help to transform any Nak Muay’s body into a real weapon. However, the use of this tool must be limited to one or two training sessions per week, starting with a limited number of strikes performed without exerting excessive power, and gradually increasing the intensity and total number of

blows. By means of diligent practice, within the first 6 to 12 months the trainee will notice a marked increase in his level of bone conditioning resulting in improved impact capacity against any human body.

• Training Pillar n. 3: Sparring a. Prearranged Sparring or Len Chern (with strikes, holds, takedowns). The prearranged sparring system (i.e., the realistic execution of pre-arranged attacks and free or predetermined defences and single or multiple counters) is traditionally used in Martial Arts in order to rehearse

potentially dangerous techniques and strategies without risking the practitioners’ safety. Knowing in advance one’s partner’s moves allows providing adequate defences safely, while maintaining a high level of adrenaline in martial arts practice. The purpose of this kind of training is learning to solve the most common fighting problems: familiarizing with different kinds of opponents and practically learning how to defend and counter against various offensive techniques, has an incomparable value. In order to develop muscle memory and quick reflexes, the trainee has to undergo long sessions of prearranged

sparring, starting with attacks and defences executed on the spot and then applying the techniques in motion. Without fear of being hurt, even novice boxers will speed up their learning process, quickly acquiring real fighting capabilities within a limited amount of time. b. Thai Grappling training (Pram Wong Nai). Because Muay Boran training is meant to prepare practitioners for all ranges, and especially for close range combat, it's crucial to learn how to master grappling situations. At a short distance from the opponent the techniques that are best applied are neck and body locks,

off-balancing maneuvers, throws, knee and elbow strikes; the bread and butter of every expert Nak Muay. The best exercise to learn how to grapple is, of course, just "grappling". Many are the hours that must be spent trying to apply the various holds on a partner who doesn’t want to be submitted, thus developing tremendous strength, endurance and sensitivity; those are the core attributes of a good Muay Boran student.

• Training Pillar n. 4: Combat Forms The practice of Muay Boran solo techniques has to be considered as one of the most important phases of training and is expressed through a series of well-coordinated defensive and offensive maneuvers executed while stepping, dodging, spinning around, jumping. In Thai language the practice of solo sequences is labelled as Raai Ram (dance): the best known version of this practice is the Ram Muay or Boxing Dance, a pre-fight ritual performed by every thai boxer before fighting in the ring. Combat Forms or Ram Yuth consist of a series of defensive and offensive maneuvers executed in combination with steps and shifts, simulating real fighting situations. Speed, fluidity, balance, cardiovascular endurance, technical accuracy, coordination, flexibility and last but not least, a good knowledge of the traditional set of names used in Muay Boran: all these attributes are greatly enhanced by a regular Ram Yuth practice.

Jeet Kune Do Gratitude Gratitude is one for the core values transmitted in martial arts. How can one pretend to respect a discipline or his students if he can not feel gratitude for those who helped him become the martial artist he is or allowed him to transmit values through his teaching? One of the important matters is to never forget who trained you and helped you on your intial martial course. One has first to express his gratitude by naming his past and present professors without forgetting any of them. For any challenges or disenchantments one can encounter in your martial life, one must never forget that each of them made him grow and evolve.

Jeet Kune Do urthermore those same challenges are shaping how one is currently. Therefore omitting some steps of one's path woul result in denying it. A martial path is like a movie, if a sequence is missing, the whole picture is incomprehensible and incomplete One has to assume his choices and be proud of all the stages crossed. Pride towards one's professors will show how grateful one can be for everything they brought. Each professor one meets will transmit values and a priceless life experience. Life is made of good and bad experiences, they allow you to evolve and become better or worse. Each life challenge will teach you a lesson. Either that lesson is understood and ensures you exit in a better position, or it is not understood and you will keep on making the same mistakes. If one draws the parallel with one's path in martial arts, one can realise that when past experiences are forgotten, one shows not only he is ungratful but also that he didn't learn from them. Consequently, those misunderstood experiences will resurface and one will have to show humility and to accept to understand the interest of each of them and to assimilate them. Gratitude is also deeply linked to humility and honesty. Humility is always to say that without professors, training partners or students, one would be nothing. With no interaction, nothing is possible. Everybody needs each other to evolve. Granted each individual is different but everyone brings something to the ones surrounding them.

Jeet Kune Do A student will allow a professor to understand and see if his pedagogy is comprehensible and assimilable by the large majority, through his questions or reactions. This way the professor will know if he is effective or not. The student can not evolve or grow without the help of a guide who will allow him to reach his objectives. The primary role of a professor is to help his students to avoid the traps he encountered during his own martial path, path that will never end by the way. The professor also has to transmit the desire to learn, teach that is must never fade and that the student will never learn everything possible. One can spend a whole life studying martial arts and never learn everything. This humility is essential and is emphasized by the gratitude expressed towards all the actors of one's path. How can one talk about his path without mentioning every stages of it? No destination can be reached without going through different steps. Each step is important and forgetting one of them would be like building an incomplete puzzle. The latter would be totally incoherent. It is mandatory to talk about honnesty. One has to be honnest on his martial resume by naming every professor, regardless of resentment or change of course. Even if one has splitted from certain professors or had any problem with some, one still owes them respect for what they transmitted.

By doing so, one shows how unable and illegitimate one can be to transmit any values through martial arts. A professor must possess very sane values in order to transmit them to his students. If the former has alwasy lied, betrayed or falsified his path, what can he transmit to his students beside disrespectful unhealthy values, deceit or else? In order to transmit true values that will help one's students to become better living things, one has to be honnest himself and have healthy values. If they are absent, it creates generations of lyers who think that gratitude, respect and honnesty are non essential values that can be trampled.

Jeet Kune Do We currently encounter more and more "experts" in every martial arts that have never really worked on tatamis but have spent most of their time lying on the internet by making up an non existent path. They don't hesitate to lie, tarnish and discredit their professors in order to promote themsleves. The more one criticize other to pretend to be better, the more one shows how he is unworthy to represent a style or a professor. Discreditting, lying or showing ingratitude reflects a worrying pathology. How can one transmit values without having any? How can one help a student make progress and reach his objectives if one is not mentally structured and is living in a lie regarding his skills? Any living being need a base in order to create something. Nobody just pop out of the blue. A musician needs an instrument to create a piece of work. One is nothing witout support, help or interaction. Let's be humble and grateful for those who helped us during our life. Gratitude towards those who help us building ourselves will only develop the values that will be transmitted in our lessons. Without gratitude one would be nothing, despite being famous or aknowledged accross the world. All of it would not be deserved and would have been acquired by tarnishing all the values transmitted for centuries in martial arts.

Deep in the Japanese forge By Shidoshi Jordan Augusto and Mike Poor

During the Sengoku Jidai period, the lack of a strong central government encouraged Daimy lords to fight each other to expand their territories. The demand for weapons grew, and the blacksmiths began a mass production of low-quality swords. Before, steel was carefully crafted, forged and tempered in an artisanal process. Then, in order to facilitate a rapid for ging, steel star ted to be imported in a ready form. The resulting sword, although beautiful, was inaccurate and less durable. The true beauty of the sword lies in its precision, durability and appearance. Only when these three elements are combined will the weapon grant a proper performance in the hands of the swordsman. Swords that are damaged by coming into contact with a hard object, or that r eveal a low quality inner part, cannot be considered legitimate "Nippon To" (Japanese swords). They do not deserve to share the reputation established by the blades that the great blacksmiths of old produced with traditional methods.

n that period, there was no other way to test a sword than to cut the bodies of dead criminals. Carrying a sword was forbidden, according to the law of 1876. The material of a Japanese sword is the Watetsu (Wako) made in Tatara. It is different from the Yotetsu (western style steel) made in the foundry boiler. A Tatara is the furnace or forge, built of clay The interior of Tatara resembles a ship’s hull. Iron dust is put from above, after putting the charcoal and setting the fire. If the iron stone is melted in the forge according to the Western style, the iron becomes fragile because it's melted in the high temperature of 1,500 degrees. In this way, iron becomes brittle, by adding sulfur and other substances to the metal foundry. An excellent special part in the Watetsu is said to be the Tamahagane. In addition to the Tamahagane, in the Watetsu made in Tatara there is a Hotyotetsu, a Zuku and other parts. Consequently, a Hotyotetsu, etc., is mixed with the Tamahagane to make a Orosigane,

then, in turn, a sword is made from the Orosigane. The mixed relationship of Orosigane varies depending on the sword maker. The Tamahagane is very precious. For example, a 2.5-tone Tamahagane is made of ten shades of iron powder and twelve shades of charcoal. In the structure of a Japanese sword, comparatively soft iron is surrounded by hard iron. Therefore, the sword does not bend because the iron from the outside is hard. Then, because the soft iron is inside, the shock is absorbed, and it becomes difficult to break. The outer iron is known as Kawagana, and the inner iron is called Shingane. When an edge is made separately, it's called Hagane. So by combining the Shingane with the Kawagana, you have a sword. As for the way of making swords, there’ are the Makuri, Shihodume, Honsanmai, and Kobuse methods. When the sword maker bends up the Orosigane and strikes it many times, he forms a Kawagana. The impurities of the iron are removed by the manual skill of the swordsmith. Then, an iron layer

is folded each time the other part is bent upwardly. The strong iron layer is stacked up on top, and it becomes even stronger. The Shingane is made up of soft iron. It's bent upwards several times, and then struck. The Kawagana is very precious because the Tamahagane is used. As the Kawagana is often made as thin as possible, when a sword is frequently cast, the Kawagana is used on top and the Shingane can be exposed. However, according to most scholars, a real sword cannot be interpreted by a simple description of its shape and curvature, since classifying a sword by its length or by its curve is very vague. The technical mastery in the manufacture of steel for quality swords was achieved during the eighth century. Even the earliest examples highlighted by a forged laminated structure with about ten thousand alternating layers and carbon content are exceptional. The sharp edge of the Japanese sword has a characteristic hardness, however, it also has a smoothness that gives it a considerable flexibility. The final stage of making a sword is tempering and polishing, both performed with techniques unique to Japan, and resulting in accentuation of models known as "Hamon" (temperament models) on the surface of the sword. Being one of the most beautiful features of the Japanese sword, the Hamon also allows the identification of its origin. Blade polishing in general is divided into 13 steps. Different stones and tools are used for each stage applying different movements. In the final stages the thumb is used to polish the Jihada and the Amon with extremely thin pieces of Narutaki stone, and with thin pieces of lacquered Uchigumori stone. Normally a good blade takes on average about 120 hours to complete. In the polishing of the blade, not even an error in a measurement of millimeters is allowed and this refined technique, a skill that can only be developed after a long and difficult training, is demonstrated with the eyes and the hands of the polisher.

“The sharp edge of the Japanese sword has a characteristic hardness, however, it also has a smoothness that gives it a considerable flexibility.” To express the Jihad and Hamon parts of the Japanese blade, this unique polishing method was developed several hundred years ago. Especially the final work is effective only for Japanese blades and it’s never used on other swords in the same way. The task of polishing on the floor is of utmost importance and it should be very carefully developed. Great blades have been preserved for centuries because they were subjected to a perfect floor work by masters in the art of polishing. When the sword is used in combat it can get seriously damaged, so the life span of blades can be finished after several occasions of use on battlefields. Japanese blades consist of curved lines and it is extremely difficult to maintain precise lines in the blade polishing on the floor. The stones for the work on the floor have a slightly curved surface, enabling a polishing technique on both sides, and the blade is polished on such stones with complicated movements that are a combination of different actions such as pitching, spinning, pulling and pushing.

On the other hand, the granulation of the stone cannot be parallel to the curvature of the sword. The Kissaki or tip is the hardest part in polishing the sword and it's always polished horizontally with extremely subtle movements. One very difficult thing about polishing the blade is that you can’t actually see what you’re polishing. You're looking on the other side of the sword, but you should know exactly where you’re polishing at the moment. Achieving such ability only becomes possible after obtaining the highest concentration and sensitivity. The shape of the Japanese blade is a crucial point for judging it’s period: it’s the length, the curvature, the thickness and the tip of the blade or the Kissaki what indicate the period of manufacture. The final work would be unnecessary if Japanese blades were simply a weapon. So, this fine and difficult technique was innovated so that it was exposed in a deep way the beauty of the Japanese blades and that's why this technique is

being developed by modern polishers until today. The final work is extremely delicate and depends deeply on the sensitivity of the teacher, resulting in alterations even in price. Marks (Iasurime) engraved on the Nakago blade, the shape, finishing style, texture, temperament and coloration of the steel are made within the consideration of creating a sword. The signature of the swordsmith is also frequently on the nakago. Although the high quality in the sword production is in the eighth century, the golden age of the sword makers was from 1050 to 1400. The history of sword making can be roughly divided within the Koto period (old sword), between the 10th and 16th centuries; and the Shinto (new sword), after the 17th century, when Daymio lords encouraged a revival of the art of the sword. The newer swords, from which models of select temperament have also been obtained, are, in addition to the Katana, Tachi swords (used by warriors), Wakizashi, Yari, Naginata, as well as Tsuba and other metal utensils. The Japanese sword is for the samurai’s soul just what the blade is for the Katana. All other parts can be considered secondary, even if they are considered tools responsible for the assembly and firmness of the blade. This secondary set is known as Koshirae. They are Kodogu, Tsuka and Tsukamaki, Habaki, Saya... They are collaborations of different artists and artisans in their individual specialties, because Katanakaji and Togishi work on the blade.

I barely had the opportunity to study the manufacturing of Japanese blades without becoming a craftsman. However, I present to you Mike Poor - dear friend and deep connoisseur of the labor of turning a piece of iron into a work of art. I create damascus chef knives, blades for every day carry and swords. My journey to becoming a blade smith began with a love of knives and swords. For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by blades, both in how to wield them and how to make them. Over the last few years I have had the opportunity to study at the Tamboyama Nihonto Tanren Dojo. Located on a forested mountainside, the school is the culmination of the dreams and efforts of Michael Bell and his family. Tamboyama is the only swordsmith school of it’s kind in the world, offering tutelage in all aspects of the Japanese sword. Michael Bell is a master swordsmith in the Japanese tradition. He apprenticed with Nakajima Muneyoshi. Nakajima sensei was unique among swordsmiths, as he was learned in all of the Japanese sword traditions from smithing, creating fittings and mountings, as well as polishing. Traditionally all the different components of making Japanese swords are worked on by individual specialists. Thanks to the teachings of Nakajima sensei, Michael became world renowned for his individually created Japanese swords.

“In the Japanese swordsmith tradition, the smith applies a thermal barrier to the upper half of the sword, causing the spine to cool much slower than the edge.”

Tamboyama is located deep in Oregon timber country, giving us the opportunity to use steel logging cable as the raw material for our swords. Each cable is 4 centimeters in diameter, and contains 180 strands of steel wire. The first step required to turn the raw material into a sword is to create a billet of solid steel from the cable. Heating the cable in excess of 1100C degrees in the forge, I begin to twist and hammer the cable until it transforms from hundreds of strands of steel wire into a solid piece of steel. Katana and wakizashi begin their lives as a sunobi, or blank. I start by hammering over the tip of the sword, or kissaki. This

ensures that the grain follows the curvature of the sword through the tip section of the blade, which provides additional strength and toughness in stabbing and strikes. For my daisho, I will be creating both the katana and wakizashi in a shinogi zukuri style. This means that the swords will have seven bevels between the mune (spine), shinogi-ji (top plane), and ha (edge). Over the next few days, the sword is forged to shape. The smith must now prepare the sword for heat treatment. Yakiire is the process for hardening a Japanese sword, transforming it from a sword shaped metal object into a formidable weapon.

Some believe that the sword receives its kami, or spirit, during yaki-ire. The physics of hardening steel is pretty amazing, and even more so considering that ancient smiths perfected this process over one thousand years ago. Tamahagane, or jewel steel, is the traditional material used to create katana. It contains a carbon content of approximately 1 ~ 1.5%. The iron molecules are crystalline structures that are very heavy compared to the carbon molecules that surround them. When hardening steel, smiths will heat it to over 1100C. At this point, the highly excited carbon atoms are bouncing through the ferrous structure. When the sword is plunged

into water it cools quickly and traps the carbon within the ferrous matrix, creating hardened steel. I n t h e J a p a n e s e s w o rd s m i t h t r a d i t i o n , t h e s m i t h applies a thermal barrier to the upper half of the sword, causing the spine to cool much slower than the edge. This renders a sword with a soft ductile spine with a hardened edge. It was this tempering technique that set J a p a n e s e s w o rd s a p a r t f ro m t h e i r c o n t e m p o r a r y counterparts. There are many stories of katana cutting foreign swords in half. The traditional test for katana was to see how many prisoners the sword could cut through in one pass.

Each swordsmith has their own secret recipe for making an insulating clay, which is applied to the top half of the blade prior to hardening. My particular recipe involves clay and volcanic ash I collect locally. The smith begins by applying a clay wash to the entire blade. This results an even thin coating on the entire blade, which will serve as a foundation for the rest of the clay. Next small legs, or ashi, are applied from the spine towards the edge on the length of the sword. These serve as shock absorbers along the hardened edge, almost like discs between vertebra. Lastly, we apply the final thick layer of clay along the shinogi that will become the softest and thickest part of the blade. The clay is left to dry overnight in order to ensure good adhesion to the steel.

The day of the yaki-ire or hardening begins with inspecting the dry tempering clay on the sword. It is important that there are no areas where the clay has fallen away from the steel. If there are any cracks or missing areas of clay, it is fixed and re-applied. As the forge heats up, the smith prepares the water that will be used for yaki-ire. A small offering of sake is traditionally poured into the water, to ensure a successful hardening. Using large pieces of heated steel, I warm up the water so that it is slightly warmer than room temperature. The steel will be at approximately 1100 C degrees when it is plunged into the water and will need to cool in the first seconds down to 200 C degrees. The blade is examined one last time before the yaki-ire process begins. The smith needs to be sure that the blade is straight, that there are not cracks or faults in the clay. Keep in mind that at this point the katana’s spine is straight and has not yet developed its characteristic curvature, known as sori.

At Tamboyama dojo we close all the windows and doors of the forge, as well as roll down the blackout curtains to ensure that no light comes into the forge. This allows me to see the true color of the steel as the sword heats up in the forge. It is imperative that the sword heats up evenly despite the fact that it is composed of different thicknesses of steel at the edge, spine and tip. Once the sword is evenly glowing at the right temperature, it is quickly thrust into the water bath. It is during yaki-ire that Japaanese smiths believe that the sword receives its spirit. It is a very intense moment, with enormous energy and expectation. In the water, physical phenomenon are taking place each second. Carbon atoms are trapped in ferrous matrixes creating hardened steel. The spine, which is the thickest area, contracts slower than the edge casing the sword to develop it’s characteristic curvature. It is truly amazing to observe a straight piece of metal going in, and a hardened curved katana coming out.

Now that the most stressful moment of creating a sword is done, it is time to examine the results of our hard work. With a file, I test the hardness of the edge and the softness of the spine. The file easily skates across the hardened edge, indicating that the steel in the edge is harder than the in the file. From the shinogi to the mune, the file bites into the steel telling us that the spine is soft. We have a successful yaki-ire.

It is absolutely amazing that ancient Japanese smiths developed these techniques for taking black river sand and turning them first into tamahagane jewel steel, and then through all the steps required to turn them into a functional and formidable weapon. My journey to creating my daisho has just begun. I will need to finish polishing my wakizashi and katana, in addition to creating the fittings and mountings for them.

The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. We will start with the basic hooking, the “Regatón” to our opponent’s “Burra”, the way of training them, as well as some variants and applications, and their cons. We will also see hooks with the tip and some variants, the “Volcadas de Garrote” or "Envolcadas" and their cons, hooking from below, finishing with “Zapatas” or “Trabas” (takedowns), and some hooks from the outside with "Pinzas" and "Majadas" with great effectiveness in combat. “Larga Mano” (Long Hand) simply means long-distance combat, a method that teaches you to stay away from your opponent and hurt him without even entering the hand-to-hand distance. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula. When the Philippine Arnis spread in the West, to distinguish it from Fencing, it was called "the living hand fencing", because the hand that did not hold the weapon, actively collaborated in the actions of defense and offense. Thus, the difference between the two systems, the East and the West, is that in Olympic fencing, the unarmed hand is kept safe and used at most to balance the impulse in assaults; in Arnis the unarmed hand is alive and active. In this work, Professor Maltese shows us the basic positions, defenses and fundamental attacks, guard exercises, blocking, crossing and counterattack in Redondo, the fifth, seventh, eighth and contras defenses, dynamic training and free combat exercises with protections. WingTsun: Problems and Solutions At this point, let me give my opinion about the most important problems in the W i n g Ts u n w o r l d a s a whole. Surely there will be those who will affirm "that in their house such things don’t happen..." But, believe me folks, I have spent twenty years practicing and studying this wonderful style and I am convinced that in a l m o s t e v e r y W i n g Ts u n organization or branch the same problems are repeated over and over. I sincerely believe that the famous phrase: "Know the enemy, know yourself, and in a thousand battles you will have a thousand victories" of Sun Tzu’s Art o f Wa r, w o u l d b e a n excellent starting point. Knowing, accepting, designing solutions and putting them into practice would make our style much better than it already is today. I firmly believe in that and it's my proposal. So, starting out with that...

hen you think about how to approach WingTsun system improvement, you usually try to fix things you consider negative for the style. But I think we tend to forget one fundamental aspect. For a logical evolution, it is necessary to solve the problems and strengthen the strengths. The latter is very important, because evolution must be based on the strongest pillars of the system. On those positive things.

a) GENERAL PROBLEMS: 1) Mistaking Martial Art for Sports One of the big problems that in my opinion has dragged WingTsun in recent years, is not having known how to position itself in the place that it really should occupy. We have lived in an eternal comparison: with other fighting styles, with contact sports and MMA, and what is worse, comparison even between branches of WingTsun! That endless comparison has done a lot of harm because it made us lose the real perspective of what we want to be. In my opinion, WingTsun is a Martial Art and as such, its approach, objectives and methods are different from sports. Comparing these two worlds, besides being sterile, is an attempt to compare absolutely different aspects. That is, in my opinion, the starting point: MARTIAL ART. Generally, our system has been taught to the general public as an extraordinary system of self-defense, that is, a system focused on real combat situations in the street. And although it may seem to be so, that is not true. It's only a tiny part of what Martial Art can offer. To understand the differences between sports and Martial Arts, let me propose some concepts that could make accessible a topic that a lot of people talk about but it's only clear to a few. - In a Martial Art we can find three types of techniques: exhibition techniques, educational techniques and combat techniques.

WingTsun

Exhibition techniques are those whose quality is their spectacular nature: acrobatic and aesthetic movements, breaking techniques, and so on; although inapplicable in combat, they're nevertheless techniques that appeal to the audience and require remarkable skills and a sound physical fitness. In WingTsun we lack this type of movements, although in demonstrations breaking techniques are sometimes carried out; just as well, in other occasions, real WT techniques, taken out of context, are performed: for example, using the 4 reactions as blocking movements to allow a longer and nicer chaining (as in the film "Ip Man"). Educational techniques are those that educate and form the neuromuscular system so as to obtain the necessary coordination, elastic strength, body awareness, etc. In WT, forms and the numerous exercises of the Chi Sao sections belong to this group. Also those techniques partaking Chi Kung elements can be classified as educational techniques. Combat techniques are those that are actually used to fight. They can be grouped into 3 types: - Control techniques: they are techniques that restrain and prevent the opponent from moving at will. They are used in the law enforcement field to transfer the detainees. They can control the opponent but they don't make him lose the desire to attack. If you let him he'll be back at it again. Obviously to be able to apply control techniques you need a very great physical and/or technical superiority. - Dissuasive techniques: Dissuasive techniques are those that leave the adversary temporarily out of combat, either by pain, by KO or by a reversible injury. A strangulation or blow can knock the opponent out for a few seconds or minutes, dissuading him from continuing his aggression. Example: punches, kicks, etc. - Definitive techniques: they are those that eliminate permanently the possibility of aggression, either because they cause death or serious, unbearable and irreversible injuries (now surgical advances can correct some of those injuries). A blow

to the throat, an eye attack, a fracture of the neck or spine (from a blow or a wrestling hold), a knee or an ankle with all the ligaments broken (from a lever or a kick). This type of technique causes death or permanent disability: blindness, tetraplegia, paraplegia, lameness, etc.

I consider that: 1.- It's not possible to do free fighting combats with definitive techniques. The injuries would be unacceptable.

2.- Therefore, as it is easy to verify, all contact sports have rules that prohibit them (including MMA). 3.- When someone must face a stronger and tougher opponent, who is also a fighter, the only chance the weaker person has to win is using definitive techniques.

Let’s clarify a couple of things here: In my personal experience, I've met some big and tough people, capable to take powerful punches in the face (which they could endure even if it hurt). Put another way, unless you have Mike Tyson’s punch in his good old days, there's no way you can possibly knock down someone much bigger and tougher than you. That’s why in boxing, Muay Thai and MMA there are weight categories. For example, in boxing, in general, heavyweights are much slower and more static than welter or medium weights, but they pack a stronger punch and a much bigger size. So if someone like Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez (70 kilos) faced Lennox Lewis in his prime, for sure the former, with his mobility and accuracy, would be no doubt the first to place three good punches in his opponent's face, but of course, that wouldn't cause sufficient damage to Lewis, who, in any case, would take

WingTsun Sergio's blows without too much trouble, seizing the opportunity to knock him out. Now imagine if, instead of attacking Lewis with his fists, Martinez would have hit him straight in the eyes with his fingers, or in the throat with the edge of his hand. Those two or three strikes would have been enough to win the fight. A weaker person would have but one chance to neutralize the attack of his opponent and open the gap to strike back: if the counterattack is not definitive, it is unlikely to get a second chance. So when in the late 19th century Karate started to be taught in schools in Okinawa, the first thing they did was to replace openhanded techniques with punches, so that children would not get seriously injured. When fighting with punches it's not easy to get a K.O. straight away. For that reason, when WT people started considering the possibility of taking part in MMA bouts, they had to modify their art, so keep in mind that even if you are the first to place several blows on the target, it won't be enough and besides you'll get exposed. Chain fists are useful when we don’t want to do too much damage and our adversary isn’t particularly tough. Otherwise, it is necessary to use definitive techniques. I believe that the WT Revolution of my Sifu, consciously or unconsciously follows that reflection, and it has totally modified the WingTsun so as to be able to compete "under the rules of MMA". Returning to my personal experience, the same ones who held my best punch wrinkled when I used songs, although I hit them on the chest, aware of what might have happened if the hit had connected higher. A tap, even soft, in the throat or a finger in the eye is unbearable. In his book, G.M Yip Chun says that his father, Yip Man, refused to teach WT because he didn't want to incur the bad karma of teaching to kill ... Now I get it... That doesn't detract one iota of merit from professional wrestlers. Their skills are extraordinary and their effectiveness is beyond doubt. The mistake is in thinking that a normal person will get the same result with those techniques. Anderson Silva, Mike Tyson, Fedor Emedianenko are/were capable of carrying out extraordinary facts. Same as Rafa Nadal or Roger Federer in tennis. To pretend that, as amateurs, we can emulate them is extremely naive. For us there are other strategies and other resources. (and, fortunately, other possible adversaries). This subject raises two difficult questions in my mind: - Can you teach definitive techniques to everyone? What a responsibility! - Under what circumstances would it be ethically and legally permissible to use them to defend ourselves? You see, that ambiguity as to where to place us has brought us into that useless comparison with things we should never have compared. On top of that, there is an even worse comparison: between the branches of WingTsun. If there is something really negative it's that!

The KMRED group, which in recent years has been focusing its work on the problems of the standing up combat at short-range, presents its fourth DVD, in which it's discussed the integration of LETHWEI’s "tools" into its "R.E.D. Training" methodology. As usual, it is not about "SHOWING OFF" the athletic and even cinematic skills of its instructors. Nor is it about demonstrating thousands of different techniques that make practitioners dream. The stated goal of the group is to provide avenues of work for people who are really interested in the "content" of the selfdefense area. Paul Vunak: Killer Instinct Defining Killer Instinct is difficult. So much has been postulated, written, and discussed on the subject, but when it comes right down to it, it's impossible to describe in 100 words or less! Killer Instinct is the desire and ability to finish your opponent. It's not about twisting your face into ugly expressions or how loudly you scream expletives at your attacker. And it is certainly not mindlessly hurling yourself into the fray with an uncontrolled rush of adrenaline. Killer Instinct is finishing the race, closing the deal, accomplishing the mission. Killer instinct is the correct choice of tactics and the mer ciless, r elentless application of those tactics. It is every choice and action that leads to the downfall of your opponent. It's an attribute, but it is also a mentality. Firm-gripped control over our most intense emotions is a hallmark of killer instinct. If we are to fully realize the maximum potential of our killer instinct, we cannot be a slave to our emotions. Think of any predator and the manner in which he stalks his prey (a cheetah, for example). It may not have eaten for several days, but it will still wait patiently for the appropriate moment to attack. Its nourishment depends on its skill as a hunter, so it is only logical that it would be quite proficient at this task. One aspect of its skill (an aspect that is easy to overlook) is patience. It knows, innately or by experience, that if it allows a nagging belly to impair its judgment, it will only have to wait longer for its next meal. So, the cheetah calmly waits while collecting data that will shape its attack plan. Which gazelle will be the easiest victim? Which gazelle will stray into range first?

There is no anger, no emotion in the cheetah. It simply tears its victim down in the most efficient manner possible, not stopping until the struggle is over. This is the epitome of killer instinct. There is a vast wealth of knowledge to be gained from studying predatory animals. If you compare the Jeet Kune Do game plan with that of the cheetah, you will find many similarities. In the embryonic stages of a streetlight, we make our preliminary analysis. This will include any observations about our adversary's structure (boxer, karate man, wrestler, etc.). Our preliminary analysis must be as accurate as possible, because tactical choices will be made from this data. It cannot be tainted by too much emotion. Just as the cheetah looks for the weakest gazelle, we look for any apparent weakness in our opponent's defense. It would not be particularly wise for the cheetah to hunt the strongest, fastest gazelle; nor would it make sense for us to try to outbox a stronger, faster boxer. In our case, we don't stand around waiting for an opportunity, but try to create one by moving and probing. Through this process we can get the opponent to reveal much more about himself than he would probably like, and possibly even make a mistake. When the time is right, we enter, straight blast, and finish our opponent with an unrelenting barrage of headbutts, knees and elbows. This is the point of no return. We must assume that our survival depends upon the success of this technique, and our emotional intensity must reflect this belief.

We have to go from a cold, unfeeling machine to a raging grizzly bear and back again in a second if the situation calls for it. In kicking and punching range, we must be that machine, free from any emotional tension or anxiety. We dispassionately view the situation and react to it as if it were a blatantly obvious course of action. Once we enter into trapping range, we must become a wild animal, oblivious to pain or reason. If the fight goes to the ground, we must kick back into machine mode so we can effectively make the correct tactical decisions. There is a common misconception that someone who angers easily or "blows his top" regularly has a lot of "Killer Instinct." Not true. This is simply a person who is being led around by his emotions. To me it's like a little kid having a temper tantrum! Legendary basketball coach Phil Jackson, in his book Sacred Hoops, talks aboutemotional control: "It was no coincidence that the players had a hard time staying focused against Detroit. The Pistons' primary objective was to throw us off our game by raising the level of violence on the floor ... I realized that anger was the Bulls' real enemy, not the Detroit Pistons." Anger clouds the judgment and hinders concentration. By teaching his players tostay composed emotionally in the face of a physical confrontation, Jackson ensured that attempts to rattle the Bulls with violent shoving, elbowing, or punching failed to produce the desired results. This level of control is not easy to reach. It can only be achieved if we are aware of the changes going on inside ourselves. As the biofeedback axiom goes, control follows awareness. So, the question is, if control follows awareness, how do we reach this awareness? First, we must see Killer Instinct in a light unobscured by any moralistic or idealistic shade. We need to realize it is not something to be feared, something to be ashamed of, or something to be carefully hidden away within the deepest part of our minds. Killer Instinct is present in each and every one of us. The dilemma, then, becomes what to do with it. In some people, it needs to be tamed or

To turn it on or off at will is an incredibly valuable asset, which can only be achieved by proper training and self-knowledge. Awareness is being cognizant of the mental, spiritual, emotional and physiological ramification of the moment. Awareness is being in tune with your surroundings, sensing your effect on them as well as their effect on you. It is not making a judgment call on your observations. For example, if someone cuts you off in traffic and fails to signal an apology, and you experience an overwhelming urge to separate this person's head from his body, you don't instantly clamp down and suppress this urge while berating yourself for your Neanderthal behavior. You simply acknowledge what you are feeling at the moment, what caused you to feel this way, and how you can use this knowledge to your benefit should a real situation arise. Awareness can be cultivated in many ways. Specifically, right now, we are only concerned with awareness in one's self, but the attributes necessary for street awareness can certainly be useful here. However, the catch is that we are dealing with something intrinsically more difficult. We come from a culture of distraction. Television, radio, video games, and endless juicy tabloids serve to distract us from dealing with our seemingly mundane lives. By divorcing ourselves from reality, if only for a moment, we lose touch with the one thing that determines our potential for accomplishment - ourselves. How many hours have you spent by yourself, free from any sort of distraction - even hunting or backpacking? I mean time spent walking or sitting, listening only to your body. This is no easy task. Sitting quietly for 20 minutes a day for a week will tell you volumes about yourself. You will find all kinds of intense emotions surfacing for no apparent reason. Your mind will concoct very persuasive arguments against this course of action. This will not be a pleasant experience. Now, I am not espousing any religious and/or spiritual doctrines for this practice. This is simply an exercise to cultivate awareness, because if you can't listen to your body sitting still, you aren't going to hear a thing when Gunnery Sergeant Pat Bagley is drilling uppercuts into your ribs!

Let's say you heeded my advice and now have a working level of awareness. Here's where we get to work on the control aspect. (This is actually the easier part.) Now that you are aware of the changes going on in your body, you should simply try to effect gradual control over these changes. The more acute your awareness, the more successful your attempts will be. Any situation that causes your blood to boil or your heart to beat a little faster is an opportunity for training. It could be a fight with your mate, a particularly condescending teller at the bank, or a check that was supposed to be in the mail. Anything that gets you going is fair game. Instead of flying off the handle, causing considerable damage to your home and furnishings, or suppressing the powerful emotions at play (thereby causing you an ulcer), take a few deep breaths and acknowledge what's happening in your body. You may still be angry, but now it is a controlled anger, which provides eminently usable energy. Make no mistake: Anybody can throw a temper tantrum. Losing your cool is not a sign of strength, but lack of control.

A lot of this may seem obscure, but it really isn't. Think of any great sports figure and pay attention to how he thrives under pressure. He feels the emotions as strongly as the next man, but he knows how to channel and not be overwhelmed by them. Try to recall any accidental killing where the husband or wife took the life of his or her beloved spouse. Through all their regret and grief, one thing is clear - they lost control and didn't realize what they were doing until it was too late. As martial artists we must always be aware of our actions. Not only for the safety of others, but more because we can then act appropriately, decisively, and ruthlessly when the need arises to defend our loved ones or ourselves. The Killer Instinct is not a sledgehammer but a scalpel that must be continually honed. Killer Instinct will allow us to prevail in an ear-biting, eye-gouging streetlight. It is the savvy that clues us into our adversary's weakness. It is the ruthlessness that drives you to mercilessly capitalize on that weakness. It is the impetus that turns your training into fighting. This topic should not be taken lightly; if you intend to be a fighter, you should implement Killer Instinct development into your training. I have given you one way to train Killer Instinct. It is perhaps the most beneficial, but also the most frustrating way. The physical logistics of integrating these concepts into your art is up to you, but they must be grounded in these immutable principles. In a crisis, you will not rise to your expectations, but fall to your level of training. Don't let ignorance of Killer Instinct be your downfall.

I.M.A.D.S... The beginning Any success has an outbreak point. In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense.
