In this second video of the series, Justo Diéguez, creator of the KFM Keysi Fighting Method, teaches us to systematically implement the tools on which the principles and concepts of the method are based, starting from patterns and basic sequences of defense against middle distance fist attacks. The street is not Boxing, Kick-Boxing or Thai-boxing, the street is brutal. We do not have space or answers, it's not something we expect, it will be a shock! Therefore, in order to achieve the highest efficiency in risk situations, we must know and understand all the tools we have. Justo Diéguez explains in detail the basic sequences and the different defense possibilities in this distance (block defense, shoulder defense, Pensador defense ...) to gradually incorporate and combine new elements such as Pensaevo, Pensa-shoulder, Pensa-head, Pensahammer, and battering ram blow, demolishing tools and features of KFM that can be used in both defense and attack. A boss demands blind obedience; a leader earns his authority through knowledge and trust.” Klaus Balkenhol leader is born or made? Both are true. He is bor n, in the measure that the essential characteristic of a leader is his high energy charge; and he is made, because are his decisions what will seal his destiny. He is born, because we are all but the fruit of an energy donation, a spark arisen between two beings, a man and a woman. The greater the donation, the higher its burden and the greater the mass of the individual resulting from the encounter. Humans are not, in that sense, distinct from the cosmos spheres and luminaries: The greater their mass, the greater their gravitational attraction. A leader always possesses a greater critical mass, so throughout his life he will drag around himself other less concentrated stars that might cross his or her way. While it's always the intensity of his mass what unequivocally defines a leader, it's the configuration of his own luminous sphere, his bubble, what will define the nature of his purpose and directions. It's precisely this configuration what will make him react, postulate and address himself in his becoming. Destiny thus conspires in his walking, because you attract what you emanate, and because the intensity of your charge e v e n t u a l l y re a c h e s a c r i t i c a l l e v e l f ro m w h i c h i t implodes. From this combustion, arises a certain light that people perceive as brightness. Consciously or unconsciously, the aura of a leader is always perceived by others, but it's the leader's actions what ultimately will lead or not to the success of his functions. Thus the leader becomes frequently tormented by his own difference. Much of something always implies a great deficiency of some other polarity, and for that reason, in his desire to find a certain balance, the natural leader is usually drawn into extreme experiences, whatever the nature of his leadership. And it's in those struggles that his spirit and his high intensity will lead him

“A great person attracts great people and knows how to keep them together.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe “Leadership means that a group, large or small, is willing to entrust authority to a person who has shown judgement, wisdom, personal appeal, and proven competence.” Walt Disney to give different answers to problems that are common to many of his fellow men. Great power always comes hand in hand with great responsibility; Those who ignore this principle, sooner or later will collapse and crash against the nearest wall. A Master that I frequented in my youth, wondered that if man could feed himself from everything on the planet, mineral, vegetable or animal, to whom did man serve as food? His response caused a great impact on me: “Men are devoured by our dreams. These consume our energy and our time, the two things of which we are made out.” Life is nothing else than the management of said wealth. Usually, a leader possesses, in a broad sense, an insatiable hunger. Nothing is enough for those individuals who have made a difference in the history of mankind. Either their days last 25 hours, or they have a special ability that allow them to perform in an hour tasks that would take days for others. Intensity is a characteristic of that high concentration of energy that they emanate, an apparently simple naturalness to solve what others so many times see as impossible. But the leader cannot be taken out of context, and the art of commanding troops must be an essential subject in his training. Many who possess the qualities for leadership fail miserably at this point. Either because they haven't mastered themselves and fail as a result of their own weaknesses and desires, or because they have been incapable of organizing the forces around them by not managing their troops wisely. That leader who does not understand that the dynamic of the art of leading troops is based on a constant exchange in the organization of hierarchies, will easily become a tyrant. The pyramid, a paradigm of perfection in our three-dimensional plane, teaches us: It's just as true that the lower must support the higher, as the higher must structurally shrink so as not to be an unsustainable burden for its bases. They say that the polished peak of the pyramids shone in the distance, thus showing the greatness of the one who had built it, thus joining heaven and earth in perfect harmony.

“A leader possesses the natural gift of summoning with his charm, the enthusiasm and adhesion of those he comes across with in his path.” Therefore, the example and the height and breadth of vision of a leader, are his greatest potential when it comes to count on his troops in battle. Devoured by his dream, the leader needs his troops to achieve his goals. He needs to redirect the mass of his surrounding planets, those fallen in the personal egregore of his critical mass, so that, pointing in the same direction, can they lead him to achieve his objectives. Thus, silently, every leader becomes in some way a slave to his own creation, where he will frequently be tormented by the intensity and immensity of his duties. However, it's not possible to lead any troops without assuming this burden. A leader cannot run away from his duties, and although freedom is the horizon to which we all aim, a leader can't have his cake and eat it too, for too long. Baffling flings which others will be allowed to, are forbidden for a true leader. In this way the swings in relation to the objectives will make him lose the confidence of his troops. For a leader, the I ching maxim “perseverance brings luck” should be a permanent slogan. This doesn't mean that he must “maintain it and not amend it”, but that he must give a sense of continuity to the objectives of his war, so as not to cause the moral weakness of his troops. A leader possesses the natural gift of summoning with his charm the enthusiasm and adhesion of those he comes across with in his path, and, as Sun Tsu said, “When it comes to making plans, NOT A MISTAKE! When it comes to putting them into practice, NOT A DOUBT!” Nothing can offend more or cause a greater destruction and disaster among the troops than the doubts that the leader could have, for nothing can spoil leadership more effectively than the consequent lack of confidence, or the usurpation of the objective that everyone in the group serves. A leader must know how to aim and be cautious when he uses his resources and enchanting to lead a group. The old “today one thing and tomorrow the opposite” can be eventually assumed only in exceptional circumstances through loyalty, which, in any case, is not an eternal currency that buys everything! That is why the

impetuosity of a general is his greatest defect, along with anger, because in both reactions, those two demons show (in their own flesh and in the others') the misrule and lack of continuity, before which any troops will end up being remiss and reluctant to continue supporting their leader. A leader is followed out of love, while a boss is respected out of fear. A boss is not a leader, and a tactician is not the same as a strategist. True leaders cannot overlook this conditioning factor, if it's not at the cost of losing their moral ascendancy over their troops, which will eventually lead them to lose them again and again in their campaigns. Many generals constantly complain about these events, often blaming the lack of character of their troops, rather than looking at themselves. But, folks, let's not fool ourselves, because when a negative event is repeated over and over again in our lives, where the only constant is ourselves, it means we are doing something wrong ... This is not at all strange, particularly in the martial world, plagued by betrayals and disagreements everywhere, as well as violent, impetuous and angry characters. For this reason, temper is the essential characteristic of every troop leader worth his salt. The mettle and firmness of the purpose for which the troops were summoned. Wherever perseverance brings luck, the true leader will display all his charm to raise the morale of the troops, using precisely the carrot and the stick, but above all, carrying in himself the certainty of Moses while crossing the deserts, because at the end of the day, leaders too, serve greater purposes. Located in the command deck, leaders outline their course according to their destiny, with humility and perseverance, only in this way will they be able to bring the common ship to fruition, crossing the evereventful waters of the Ocean of life..., and so, with the respect and acquiescence of those who accompanied them on their journey, will finally reach their Ithaca, wise and older, with the satisfaction and certainty of the accomplished duty.

My telling is not a product of fantasy, but the narrative of a concrete experience developed through constant research and implementation, gradual learning and an inexhaustible thirst for knowledge. The meritorious expository clarity of the article makes the principles it shows easily understandable and useful for any practitioner, be it teachers or students, including future followers and all those who wish to research in this method of combat. I will try to respond to the priceless teachings handed down over time by great masters, that have been the invaluable source of my technical and behavioral knowledge.

he attempt to deal with the subject as fully as possible requires us to retrace, albeit briefly and without any pretense of exhaustiveness, the historical fixed points of fencing, which has behind a centuries-old epic. In this general framework, one of the most interesting profiles relates to the ancient techniques, now revised in a modern way, taught to government members, and private and civil law enforcement units, with the collaboration of the WKMA based in London (President Alex Parisi) and BUSHI TACTICS (President Master Manrico Erriu). Below I will illustrate some guards in use in the school starting with those of knife, to follow with the techniques of billhook knife, half billhook knife, razor and stick, all of them popular weapons used in our territory.

2. Fencing: the outlines of a secular history The art of fencing reserve a long history of stories dating back to 1417, when the Spanish Knights, Conte, Rosso and Fiorellini of Spain, fed up with the constant abuses carried out by the feudal lords on the people, gave up all their goods and properties and devoted themselves to defend the weak. Forced to flee from Spain, they took refuge in southern Italy, passing through Sicily and crossing Calabria and Campania, until they reached Puglia. In their long journey they came to be known as the "Men of Life or Lucidity", since their task was that of "giving light" to those who lacked it, teaching the helpless to behave according to the chivalry code, that is, to use the knight techniques (and courage) that would enable them to safeguard and defend their families, forced to suffer continuous abuses and violence from the oppressors, usually men of strong economic and/or political power, who hired local criminals to carry out social injustices. A historical phrase that often echoed among the Men of Life, Honor and Humility was: "the white man is not touched", that is, men without knowledge to defend themselves must not be abused. It is easy to imagine that, in such a historicalsocial context, the greatest merit of the Spanish Knights was that of having formed numerous "Men of Honor".

3. The Manfredonia knife handling technique in the mini fencing of the "Knights of Honor and Humility" The school is divided into five knife forms plus one with bare-handed form, each characterized by their own special technical actions. 1 - LIBERA (Free): is the most used in a context of both combat and personal defense. It consists in learning the various guards, such as the bridge (photo 1), the elbow guard (photo 2) and the x-guard (photo 3), which is executed with the razor or small knives. In addition to these heterogeneous guards, there are three divisions that can be both frontal and circular. Frontal steps are used both to approach the opponent and to conquer the center of the circle or the room in which you train; while the steps of the circular division are used to rotate in a circle, one in one direction, and the other in the opposite sense, and you fight using your knowledge.

The call is an invitation to lure your opponent into a trap. The bridge (see photo n.) is nothing more than an excellent guard to protect yourself against attacks that arrive with a "weapon against weapon" technique, while the "puntata" serves to reach the tip hit preceded or accompanied by a kick. The double assault is used to press the opponent and bring him on the defensive. The "quartiature" is an excellent dodging system to defend against various attacks that arrive by taking advantage of the rotation of the pelvis so that the opponent’s attack gets lost in the air. The double lateral step is used to avoid direct attack to the abdomen, similar to a foot-crush. The cutting kick is the sweep on the opponent’s foot that advances towards us, to compromise his balance. 2 - CHIUSA (closed): in turn, is divided into two other sectors: the "half-closed", which contains specific side invitations using compass steps and the "closed", which is substantiated in three steps in the center closing itself, that is, turning your back to the adversary so as to take advantage of the peripheral gaze and counterattack the adversary with a mule kick.

3 - A TAGLIARE (to cut): consists in assuming particular positions that favor the cutting hits both front and rear. 4 - LO SPECCHIO (the mirror): preferred when you reach the center of the room. It consists in maintaining the position to make the adversary rotate around us so that he consumes his energies and, at the right time, we launch our counterattack or assault, depending on the situation. 5 - LA GALEOTTA (the convict): this is a face-to-face combat technique, that is, at very close range. It was born, as can be seen from the name, in the prisons among the prisoners, who, having to settle the accounts, used knives or utensils at random (such as forks or spoons) that were converted into improvised weapons. This technique has eventually been taught in schools, to deal with fighting in narrow environments, such as elevators. In any form is wielded the so-called "fusto" (log), that is, a wooden knife (choice that responds to obvious safety reasons). When there was any offense, it was customary to wrap a wet cord around the blade, leaving only a few millimeters of the tip of the knife uncovered. Usually, the duelists were bare-chested, so that the masters of the encounter could see the drop of blood on the skin of the one who had been wounded. On many occasions it was enough for the them to stop the

challenge, not surprisingly also known as "challenge at first blood", a duel also used in Roman fencing, known as the “cicciata”, consisting in hitting the opponent's belly. In addition to these five armed sectors, there is a part with bare hands, in which two guards known as the reinforced guard and the waiting guard stand out. The “manicchetta” is nothing more than the peasant billhook knife used by gypsies. This technique was taught to me by Master Borgia, who learned it from a chief of the San Severo Gypsies, in exchange for teaching them the art of the stick. It is a technique that requires extensive and meticulous athletic preparation, since it is based on stretching as much as possible to the ground and to jump on the adversary with sudden attacks. In the right hand is the billhook knife, hidden by a handkerchief that is attached to the left wrist, so that no one sees the technique that is used, in addition to hitting in the eyes (see photo of the billhook knife guard). Then there is the "half billhook knife" used by farmers for grafting on trees. It is used in particular for self-defense because it is small and so easy to hide, in addition to being permitted by Italian legislation, as it's considered an agricultural tool, intended for a specific and natural working use. The "half billhook knife" could be compared to an Italian

karambit: they have the same type of tip, differentiated by the lack of the hole in the handle. Another weapon used with a special handle is the razor, due especially to the device that attaches the blade to the handle (see photo). It’s used as the technique of the blunt tip knife. Usually, the razor was used to tea the infamous one that had caused harm to brothers and companions, something famous among the Knights of Honor and Humility. The razor, like the "half billhook knife", finds a justification before the law, because it's also a tool intended for a natural and specific use (personal hygiene), that many carried when they went to the barber's to take a shave.

4. The staff or walking stick. The Italian school of the “Knights of Honor and Humility” From the distant 1400, followers, in addition to knife fencing, they also practiced fighting with the walking stick. It is a unique weapon to defend yourself against one or more opponents, even if they are armed with knives. The walking stick or staff is made of cedar wood, particularly hard (it's used in shipyards for the construction of boats), but at the same time light and resistant to even the hardest blows. It has a slightly conical shape in the handle, to prevent it from being easily removed from the user's hands or to prevent it from escaping during the execution of a swirling movement. The diameter is variable: from 4 cm in the biggest part and about 3 cm in the thinnest. Two individual sizes are used, depending on the person who must use it: one that runs from the ground up to the height of the navel of the practitioner and the other that reaches the height of the chest. The school of the stick has its own precise catalog of figures and techniques to be performed: 1. Static swirl. 2. Walking whirl. 3. Narrow knife. 4. Wide knife. 5. Steps turning. 6. Attack with smooth square. 7. Smooth square. 8. Three steps of division. 9. Square steps of division. 10. The assault. This is the basic, propedeutic way to learn the handling of the staff. Once the techniques were mastered, the chain began, that is, a pre-established series of attack and defense techniques followed by the study of the guard positions, among which was the well-known San Miguel or Libra position. 5. The so-called Portuguese School Master Berardinetti Matteo taught it to me. Forced to emigrate to Argentina, where it was legal to do staff competitions, he had the opportunity to learn it in Buenos Aires. The techniques of this school seek broad movements, characterized by an "elegant" style and a particular search for beauty on an aesthetic level. The main figures are: 1. Puntata di gran gala. 2. Leg mutilation and cross hit, also known as "schiacciacani" (lit. dog repeller). 3. Leg mutilation and hit to the head. 4. Two half turns and cross blow on all four sides. 5. Sottomani. 6. Parata e colpo di testa (block and head strike) 7. Cavalcante volante (flying rider). Nowadays there is a new frontier in the using of traditional stick, through warming up exercises that activate and train the fascial and myofascial systems as well as the connective tissue. The stick gymnastics is preliminary to the execution of the form described above to allow to relax the whole body, especially the joints. With Dr. Edo Hemar, founder of Funzional Flow, based in Germany in the city of Freiburg, we studied and developed functional exercises using the popular stick.

Muay Thai Phasom Muay: the secret weapon of Combat Muay Boran. By Marco De Cesaris

Combat Muay Boran is a modern-traditional style of Siamese fighting that combines ancient thai traditions with modern scientific methods. The final goal is to teach men and women of all physical and psychological conditions to fight, on the ring or in the street. The training systems devised by Thai masters of old are combined with modern Science, in order to “create” complete martial artists. From a technical point of view, Combat Muay Boran syllabus in based on 78 strategic principles or Chern Muay. These fundamental elements, once totally mastered, give practitioners a total understanding of all-out (martial) fighting. One of the “tricks” that make this style so effective is the use of sophisticated combinations of strikes instead of single blows in attack or when counterattacking. This advanced strategy is called Phasom Muay.

• Situation 1: Direct attack A Muay fighter’s offensive strategy is designed to create openings in an opponent’s wall of defense: through correct timing and swift footwork, an expert Nak Muay will position himself at the right range to unleash powerful blows aimed at his opponent’s unprotected vulnerable spots. The best way to successfully reach an opponent’s weak spots is by combinations of strikes (Phasom Muay); each blow may carry the Nak Muay’s bodyweight behind it (full power blow) or may be a “mock blow”, designed to mislead and to open the way to a real heavy blow. The way strikes are combined makes the difference between an expert fighter and a novice: the best fighters deliver blows in series, strikes are linked in a natural manner, flowing smoothly one after the other. In creating combinations, two elements have to be considered: the leading weapon and the number of strokes.

Muay Thai The weapons that are usually chosen as a lead are the straight punch (mahd trong), the front kick (tiip trong) or the vertical/diagonal round kick (tae trong/chieng), since they allow the fighter to attack while keeping most of his sensitive spots well covered. The follow up weapons will naturally flow after the lead: each fighter will develop his own combinations according to his level of skill and his physical structure. As far as the number of blows (mock or real) usually employed by an expert boxer they usually go from 1 to 4. Therefore, the four basic patterns for combination striking are: 1. Mai Rook Neun Chawa or one step attack pattern 2. Mai Rook Song Chawa or two steps attack pattern 3. Mai Rook Saam Chawa or three steps attack pattern 4. Mai Rook Si Chawa or four steps attack pattern Most fighters aim at throwing 3 blows in combination as this is the ideal number of strokes that guarantees optimal results (i.e., knock outs). For example a combination may be started with a rear straight head punch, followed by an inside leg kick and a straight knee aimed at the chin or face of the opponent.

Otherwise, a fake straight head punch may be followed by a liver punch, a side step and a finishing power shin kick aimed at the neck of the opponent. Each series of strikes is executed according to a specific rhythm that is based on the fighter’s ability to “feel” the moment, speeding up or slowing down the actions as required by the situation.

• Situation 2: Counterattack When defending and counterattacking, a typical beginners’ mistake is to defend the opponent’s strike, throw a counter blow and wait. Big mistake. In fact, if you fight this way, you reduce drastically your chances of scoring and furthermore you open yourself to a possible retaliation. Just like direct attacks, also counterblows should be executed in series, not single strikes. This is the way of Combat Muay Boran. Two, three or four strikes should be follow your initial defense: if the first counter fails, don’t get discouraged and keep on “flowing”. Throw more than one counter and aim your blows carefully: one of your strikes will land on a sensitive spot and lead you to victory.

Muay Thai For example, after parrying a straight right and countering with a straight punch, don’t feel satisfied. On the contrary, let your body go with the flow and follow up with one or two more counters. You can combine the straight right with a left body hook and a horizontal elbow to the head. In the first place, hitting head, body, head will make the opponent’s defence much harder. Second, the three counters follow a specific order that is designed to charge each blow with growing kinetic energy, thus maximizing the chances to score a clean knock out. Let’s see more examples of multiple counter strikes. Example 1: a 1-2 combination (left lead followed by right cross) can be blocked and the opponent’s right arm can be grabbed with both hands. The possible combined counterattacks that may follow the defensive action are: a series of one or more body knee strikes, an elbow strike, an arm lock leading to a take down and a finishing elbow break. Example 2: against a front kick to the body, a common defense is a low parry. The possible series of counterattacks are: a body knee strike, a head knee strike (to the chin or face), a downwards swing kick to the knee and a finishing round kick to the backbone (cervical vertebrae).

All this information is priceless for martial artists who wants to upgrade their combat skills and for ring fighters who want to broaden their knowledge of fighting techniques. A good example of how Combat Muay Boran can be the answer for both kinds of needs is the Mexican case. As a matter of fact, Mexico has a long and glorious tradition of ring fighters, especially in international Boxing. Muay Thai is also very popular in that country and in the course of the last decade, many Mexican Thai Boxers and international Boxers were attracted by Muay Boran IMBA and, recently, by Combat Muay Boran. Mexicans are tough fighters and they wouldn’t accept a “new” combative art without testing its efficiency. The success Combat Muay Boran is having in Mexico is a living proof that this discipline is perfectly suitable for ring sports as well as self-defence oriented martial arts.

Hwa Rang Do On Following (part 1) One must first follow before they can lead. Therefore, whom you choose to follow will determine who you will become. There are those we do not have a choice such as our parents, siblings, close relatives, and the teachers we are presented with in our early years. However, it is those precise people that mold and set our personalities and character during our formative years. Then there are those whom we choose to follow, emulate, and sometimes idolize and they affect our aspirations, our dreams, and our final outcome.

For our discussion in this article, we will concern ourselves mostly with those whom we choose to follow and what it means to follow. However, you shall see that much of the reasons, motivations and remedies will overlap. Of course, the foundation, the origin, and the people who have influenced us in the beginnings of our lives are crucial in how we are as adults and who we have become, but that is something we cannot change or undo. Therefore, we will focus on the matters which we have the power to change. Kahlil Gibran says it best: On Children: …You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable. Hwa Rang Do We have no power over the archer or the bow, but now as arrows in flight, we can control our direction. We are defined by our choices and it is this ability to choose, our “freewill” that is a unique gift to humanity. And, with every decision there are consequences and results, which affect and ripple through the entire humankind and across the vast universe, both seen and unseen. At first glance, whether the consequences of our choices were positive or negative, good or bad, depends on the interpretation and who is interpretating. However, although the interpretation might be subjective and vary from person to person, as one act may benefit one person, but may be harmful and negative to another, or the same act may be right or wrong depending on the time and place, there must be an objective truth which defines its true moral value. If it’s only subjective, then any and all action is only circumstantial and holds no virtue or merit on its own and only depends on extraneous factors. We can continue to discuss further the idea of morality which has been argued through all of human history indefinitely, but it is to point out that it’s not

as simple as just stating something is good or bad without clear deep understanding. In any case, our decisions however small and seemingly trivial has immense value and power, which can only be realized and understood through much knowledge, wisdom, maturity, and faith. It is self-centeredness both passive and aggressive, pride, ego, and fear which reduces the scope in which we see our lives, polarized between the extremes of minimizing our value and self-worth feeling powerless and out of control to over-inflating and overcompensating feeling as though we can change the world, leaving one to use a sword as a toothpick or to behead all threats; use a gun as a hammer or to kill all opposition. It is our decision-making process that we must enhance and strengthen by choosing with clarity through knowledge and wisdom, careful research and consideration, utilizing our God-given intellect to answer all doubts and questions. The problems rise due to frivolous decisions made without proper knowledge and rational thought, but rather as an emotional reaction.

It is founded on faith: How you perceive faith to be? Many, even the current Webster Dictionary defines it as a “firm belief in something for which there is no proof,” thus lies the problem. If we adhere to this definition, then we must have proof, which suggests that we must be present to the events as to witness it first-hand in order to prove whether something to be true or false. However, our decisions are mostly based on faith, on the belief of something is true without ever having to fully understand, know, and surely never having to have witnessed or seen. We rely on the fact that other experts who are more knowledgeable are telling the truth. We have faith in their knowledge and their honesty to tell the truth, and in fact, most of all what we know are learned through hearsay, never having to have witnessed, created, or discovered it in person. Furthermore, just because someone is an expert in their field does not necessarily mean they are always correct. Then, one can argue that it is not necessary to have witnessed the evidence in person, having no absolute proof, but it is only reasonable to believe that there is proof. Recently, I was conducting a class in the long staff (jangbong). In this class I was teaching how to twirl the weapon. It was an online class with a few of my students being present with me and the class was recorded. I was

Hwa Rang Do mainly focused on the students who were online and did not pay much attention to the students who were standing behind me. In reviewing the recorded video of the class, I noticed one high ranking student who continually repeated the same mistakes even though he had the closest view, witnessing first-hand everything that was shown in detail. He is intelligent, observant, and very motivated to learn everything correctly as he is also an instructor. In his mind, what he was doing was exactly what I was teaching although it was completely wrong. As teachers, we see this happening all the time. Being present and witnessing first-hand does not guarantee that they will see what is true, but once again only what they perceive to be true. If I have never caught my student’s mistake, he would have continued to propagate to others the incorrect technique as the truth of what I

have shown him. There’s no way to be certain unless one goes to the source of the knowledge. Interestingly, Webster also gives another juxtaposing definition of the same word, “faith” as a “firm belief in the integrity, ability, effectiveness, or genuineness of someone or something.” By using this definition, we practice faith everyday on everything we choose to do. However, we most often associate “faith” with the first definition and dismiss the strength and validity of faith in God as being irrational, lacking evidence or proof relegating it to being religious and superstitious. Yet, it is the strength of our faith that gives relevance and value to our convictions. So, which is it? a) Is faith a belief in something to be true without any proof hence one is unable to prove it?

b) Is it a belief in something to be true because you have reasonable faith that others whom you believe is telling the truth even though you cannot prove it yourself? c) Is it a belief in something to be true because you have absolute faith that others are telling the truth and you can also prove it yourself? d) Is it all of the above or none of the above? It is to illustrate that it’s not so simple to answer, and our current definitions seem to be very ambiguous. Furthermore, we have to distinguish “belief” and “faith”. Culturally, we have this sense that belief is based on facts and faith is based on superstition, unfact, unproven, as it is often negatively biased being associated with God or religion. However, both words possess similar meaning. We can have another entire discourse on just this, but that

is not the focus of this article. However, we must have a good grasp of these words and its ideas as they are foundational in our understanding of the world and our convictions in the things of this world, which then make up the reasons and motivations of our choices. The truth is there are no absolutes whether proven by scientific theory or religion that we can know absolutely, there’s only a belief or faith that something is absolute through empirical means using our limited intellect rendering all things as reasonably true, but not absolutely true. Just believing or having faith because someone else has told you or better yet, because the majority of the people you know and respect believe it, should never be enough for you to believe the same. You must have a rigorous set of doubts, questions, and skepticism, which then are followed with the proper questions for you to seek

Hwa Rang Do for the answers, the proof, the evidence in order to be satisfied and convinced before you accept it as a truth, never quitting but being relentless until you discover it. The more we increase our knowledge the better we can understand. Therefore, we must be studied or be doomed to follow and fall for any absurdities, insanities, and quackeries. But one must always remember that knowledge is only the tool, it is the ability to think which must be enhanced. Same as a sword, to an unskilled person it might as well be a toothpick bringing self-harm, but to a skilled warrior it is a killing machine, yet to a mother it can be used to cook and feed her children. Now, let’s address the idea of following blindly. You cannot follow or obey a leader, a superior, or even a colleague or a friend for that matter

because they said so, no matter how much you like, love and/or respect them. It’s never about your feelings that determine validity or truthfulness. You must follow because you believe it to be true. However, this idea presents a huge problem. How does one know anything to be true? If you define truth as subjective and personal, then you cannot commit to anyone or any ideal, but commit to the transitive property and impermanence of all things as truth. In which case, words and ideas such as commitment, integrity, loyalty, longevity, trustworthiness, conviction, honor, and even love loses all meaning as they all attempt to describe some sense of permanence having intrinsic value. Hence, most of us can’t be bothered to think of such complex intricacies so we choose the easier, most travelled path and fall for our feelings. This is a clue and evidence to our undeniable quest for immortality, godhood and our constant struggle to deal with mortality,

impermanence, with death. There’s nothing of value for things which possess a short life span, which is impermanent and ephemeral. We all associate ideas and derive meaning from things, concepts which refer to the infinite, everlasting, permanent, never changing, which are all propositions that are out of the reach of the human scope. It is the antithesis of being human, however, we administer the highest value to ideals which are beyond our capacity, our reality. We as individuals are defined by our choices and whom we choose to follow is essential in the success and fulfillment of our goals. However, this has an underlying fundamental problem as well. It presupposes that we know what we want and the goals that we have set are in fact true and unwavering. The reality, we are not certain, and our convictions are temporal, being true for only that moment as reflected by comments such as, “I love you forever for today” or “that’s what I am going to do for the rest of my life for now.” The strength of one’s character and their trustworthiness are

determined on whether they stick to their convictions and follow through until the end, whether their words match their actions. Thus, it is unfair and unjust to judge the ones we follow when our commitments to them are not genuine and true. We hold a double standard in which we ask for consistency, endurance, and integrity from our leaders or others whom we choose to follow but do not hold ourselves accountable to the same standards as our commitments to them always remain fluid and dynamic.

The Luohan’s 18 hands SHAOLIN LUOHAN SHIBASHOU When we try to search through the ancient Shaolin temple texts about Luohan Shi Ba Shou we find that its origin d a t e s ba c k t o t h e t im e o f Bodhidhar ma (Damo), who was the father and founder of Chan or Zen Buddhism. According to legend, it is said that after having created Yi Jin Jing (muscle and tendon treatise) and Xi Sui Jing (the spinal cord washing chi kung), he developed a series of movements known as Luohan Shi Ba Shou or 18 hands of Luohan which would shape the first movements of Shaolin Kung fu.

Although this story is not 100 percent corroborated, according to the Shaolin Quan Pu (少林拳谱), one of the oldest Shaolin books, in the distant Sui Dynasty the Shaolin warrior monks developed a series of movements for meditating monks. The movements were very simple and were chosen according to the 18 statues of Luohan, hence the name of Luohan Shi Ba Shou (Luohan’s 18 hands). Both stories, although distant in time, coincide in that the exercises were created for the meditating monks in order to enable them to exercise and learn to defend themselves.

Shaolin ith the passage of time these forms were gradually developed until the Tang Dynasty, when they had already evolved to 36 movements. In the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty, monks Jue Yuan and Qiu Yue, along with other monks, developed up to 173 more movements. But it was not until the Ming Dynasty that a group of monks decided to regroup the Luohan forms according to their characteristics and their antiquity, unifying, ordering and organizing everything in 18 taolu (forms) with a total of 324 movements. In addition, opening and closing movements were added to each form. Its style is particular and its movements are continuous, defense and counterattack movements are clearly seen, and it’s one of the standard forms taught by the Masters in the Shaolin Temple.

Shaolin Today we can find different versions of the same form and this is due to the large number of schools that have emerged in recent years; Although the base is the same, some movements may vary depending on the lineage, Master, etc. Formerly, Songshan Shaolin Temple was divided into four families for better management of the Monastery, since its territory was much larger than what we know today. All these families practiced Kung fu, but each one had its own characteristics even though they lived within the same Temple. For example, the Shaolin Luohan Shi Bahsou from the West Gate family is not the same as the one from the South Gate, and the same happens with many other forms. The Shaolin Luohan Shi Bashou has managed to reach our days through the inheritance transmitted from Masters to disciples, and we can say that for Kung fu lovers, its knowledge and practice are invaluable.

Within the form we find real and unreal movements, defensive and offensive, blows with a fist, palm, double palm, which makes Luohan Shi Ba Shou an excellent form for all types of practitioners, both advanced and beginners, since its characteristics embrace the roots of authentic Shaolin Kung fu. If we continue to analyze the form, we will find that by training it daily we will be able to develop a base that will serve us for the work of other more complex Shaolin forms. Within Luohan Shi Bashou, the positions that compose it are, ma bu, gong bu, xu bu, du li bu, and ding bu, which are repeated throughout the performance.

The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. We will start with the basic hooking, the “Regatón” to our opponent’s “Burra”, the way of training them, as well as some variants and applications, and their cons. We will also see hooks with the tip and some variants, the “Volcadas de Garrote” or "Envolcadas" and their cons, hooking from below, finishing with “Zapatas” or “Trabas” (takedowns), and some hooks from the outside with "Pinzas" and "Majadas" with great effectiveness in combat. When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.

Progressive Fighting Systems Although they may not realize it, these fighters are truly harvesting the seeds that were planted by Bruce Lee and Dan lnosanto in the 1970s. All one has to do is pick up The Tao of Jeet Kune Do, and it becomes obvious that the principles and concepts the two discovered are being implemented to a “T.” Complicating matters further is that many of these scenarios usually end up mutating. Now things become exponentially more difficult. By mutating, I mean changing from one scenario to another within the same fight. For example, the altercation may start off one-on-one standing up and then go to the ground. If another individual jumps in we have a two-on-one fight. Then perhaps two more people enter the equation, giving us a three-on-two situation. At this point someone might grab a pipe- now this has turned into a weapons fight. In retaliation, someone else may grab a blade. Now the scenario has changed to a knife fight. These mutations could potentially be endless. The next attribute in our quest to become a complete streetfighter is keeping a cool head while these mutations occur. Controlling one's emotions is one of the most essential aspects of a fight. There are moments in the midst of battle where one must "turn on" his killer instinct. There are other moments when controlling the emotionsmeans relaxing and breathing. This is when you are in the moment, I like to call the "Fog of War." If one is not highly trained in all areas of combat (i.e., stick, knife, standup, ground), and a scenario occurs in which you have never experienced, panic occurs and controlling your emotions is impossible. Most people in martial arts are too specialized in their "way" of fighting. For example, if a person's "way" is stick fighting, and he loses his stick, he would certainly be in trouble. If a person's "way" is kickboxing and he ends up on the ground he would also be in trouble. If a person's "way" is ground fighting and he has to fight more than

Progressive Fighting Systems one person, he also would be in trouble. This is why Bruce Lee espoused the rather esoteric axiom of "using no way as way." Some schools out there are "eclectic" in that they train in many of the aforementioned areas. However, the problem is that they have a tendency to simply compartmentalize these areas. They have a 4 p.m. stick class, a 5 p.m. kickboxing class, a 6 p.m. ground fighting class, and so on. This sort of training does not promote flowing and adapting to the various possible mutations of a streetlight. In boxing, this would be akin to having a 4 p.m. jab class, a 5 p.m. cross class, and a 6 p.m. hook class. Having classes compartmentalized like this is not in itself a bad thing, provided you follow Guro Dan lnosanto's methodology - have one class at your school that combines everything. Guro Dan has always taught me that you will train the way you fight and fight the way you train. Franco Vacirca Inspired by Kung-Fu Readers have asked me why I named my blog "Inspired by Kung-Fu". I will answer that question by telling you about why and how I got into martial arts. "Kung-Fu" was the first word my parents memorized to explain to friends and relatives what kind of "sport" I was doing. This was in the late 70's, and at that time martial arts in general were still unknown. Even today, after so many years training in different martial arts, "Kung-Fu" remains the term used at home to explain what we do in our spare time. During this very unfortunate COVID-19 time for all of us, my mother came to me a few days ago and asked me, "Franky!", "...I wanted to ask you, how is your Kung-Fu teaching doing? Are you allowed to practice despite this pandemic?" Why the term "KungFu" stuck with my parents more, I cannot answer you. I also asked them s e ve r al t im e s , a n d they themselves did not know. Maybe it is because just when I started with Wing Chun training, the big Kung-Fu wave started in our c o u n t r y, a n d t h e first Bruce Lee movies were shown in the cinemas.

Maybe my parents stayed with the word "Kung-Fu", because as a young man, I tried different things, and it was too exhausting for them to always remember the new fighting styles and masters! My father also used the term "Chinese boxing" whenever his friends asked him about it. He often told me that he liked Boxing as a small child. He would often wake us up in the middle of the night to watch the Boxing matches with Mohamed Ali & Co. on the TV. My father had heavy hands for his stature and light body weight. Anyone who dared to play "hand wrestling" with him most likely did not have a great experience, because his hand squeezing could be extremely painful. My martial arts experience, now nearly forty years long, began with Judo because I wanted to score points with the youngest daughters of one of our neighbors at the time. She was my first "big" love. Iris was her name, was incredibly cute, with long blonde hair and beautiful water-blue eyes. My time in kindergarten therefore became a great time for me. Consider that I got to sit next to a beautiful girl and spend my free time with her in Judo practice, instead of soccer practice. In our neighborhood 95% of the boys played soccer and I could not stand this sport even then; so, I was doubly lucky!

The black man scared me to death! One a late afternoon after school, when I was not older than 6 or 7 years young, I was while walking homeward, suddenly an ugly, tall and only half-dressed man appeared in front of me, who wanted to show me his jewels (you know what I mean by that!). I was so shocked that I immediately run away. When I got home, I jumped into my mother's arms and told her what had just happened. My mother tried to calm me down, but it was not that easy. Later that evening she told me that I was not the first child in our neighborhood to be molested by that half-naked monster. That same evening, my father came home from work a little earlier, and immediately wanted to know from me what exactly had happened. As it seemed, the man was known in our neighborhood. The next day, after dinner, my father decided to pay the fiend a visit. I still remember that from our balcony, I could see my father, with a friend of ours, entering the house opposite. Shortly after, we heard a police car, and not much later we saw an ambulance coming. At that same moment we could only imagine what had happened, but I never asked my father about it. I can only remember that shortly after that the guy disappeared from the neighborhood from one day to the other. After this unfortunate episode in my life, martial arts training, or as my mother just called it, "Kung-Fu", became an obsession for me. Every cinema and TV movie I had to see, every martial arts magazine I had to get, and yes even every Asian restaurant I had to visit. Asia, especially China and Japan, became my best and most important allies.

During one of our long trips in the summer vacations, when we were once again on the way to Sicily by car, my father was in a hurry to reach his parents' house. For some time, my mother had been begging him to finally stop the car so we could get something to eat and go to the bathroom. But my father had his own schedule, so it was up to him to decide when and where to stop the car. But then suddenly the moment arrived, and finally he stopped at a next big gas station.My mother, my brother and I, started – holding hands – to reach the restrooms as quickly as we could. At the main door, we were stopped by a lady who oversaw the restrooms. She would not let my mother go in with us "boys," so my mother turned to me, gave me my brother's hand, and said to me, "...go in quickly now and you take care of your younger brother!" But that was easier said than done!

Franco Vacirca My brother Demetrio, then without any Ninja knowledge known to me, had left within seconds. No one mastered the "art of disappearing" as well as he did and could drive anyone crazy looking for after him. I could tell so many stories about that, but that is for another time. So, we entered the men's room and as soon as we were inside, we were looking for a free restroom. Suddenly my brother went off by himself and I could not find him again. Shortly after, I heard someone calling my name loudly. It was Demetrio in one of the toilets at the end. He was trying to open the door again. He had locked it, afraid that someone else could get in. He started asking me to open the door for him, but obviously I could not do it from the outside! What I did not realize was that there was an elegantly dressed gentleman standing behind me.

He had overheard the whole scene, and at one point he told me in Italian, almost without an accent, to tell my brother to stand far away from the door. I looked up at him and I saw an Asian man. As soon as my brother confirmed that he was standing at the very back against the wall, the man kicked the door open and a moment later my little brother jumped out. While joyfully hugging Demetrio, I looked up to see if I could see the man who had just helped us. But unfortunately, he was no longer around us. Since much time had passed since then, my mother asked me at the exit what had taken so long, and I told her the small but exciting story. Then she immediately began to examine my brother from head to toe to see if everything was all good with him.

As we walked back to the car, I just thought that unfortunately I had not thanked this Asian gentleman for his help. But I also thought how cool it was to know that you can help others by a simple "Kung-Fu kick".

Strike first, strike hard, no mercy! During the fifth elementary school, we had moved from the town center of Kloten to the higher Nägelimoos. However, I had to wait until the end of the end of the old school year to be able to change in the nearer school. On the way to school my friends and I were constantly harassed by an older boy. The whole thing started harmlessly! At first only verbally, but then he became more and more aggressive and soon physically. He was not only ten years older than us, but incredibly tall and heavy, a true bully! End of December on school New Year's Eve, the last day of school before the Christmas and New Year's vacations would start, we celebrated this day with a big party, with lots of fun, games, and music. At that time, this was a "tradition" that, to my knowledge, no longer exists. The graduation party started sometime early in the morning. The kids would go out into the street and make a lot of noise and allow themselves some wild jokes, such as "throwing" old bad smelling eggs against windows and doors, or wrapping cars with toilet paper, and so on. By the way, this could also be one of the reasons why they stopped this "tradition". On that mentioned early morning, when we had had our fun and were now finally on our way to the school party, we had to walk through a darker boulevard with almost no lamplight burning. Suddenly the bully jumped out of the darkness and shouted around. I think his intention was not only to scare us to death, but also to take away our stuff we had baked for the party. But he had not counted on my spontaneous reaction: as he was now standing in front of me, I kicked him so hard between his legs that the guy immediately fell on both his knees and seconds later landed with his face on the floor. My classmates had the idea to take away all his things and run away. I was so surprised by my own reaction that I felt like I had been standing next to him for minutes. I watched as he looked at me and asked not to hit him again!

My first steps in Wing Chun Kung-Fu! Few months later, when I finally changed school, I was also closer to my old friends and schoolmates. My best friend Antonio Stella, who had moved away from the town center a while earlier, I had not seen for a few years, and now we met again. On my birthday, when we were at my home celebrating, I showed Antonio my new room that I shared with my brother. I proudly showed him my Judo suit and I was about to grab him tightly by the sweater with both hands when he reacted in a flash and knocked me away with a series of chained punches to my chest and I end up with my back on the wardrobe. I intended to impress him, but within seconds, he had control of the situation and the show! I just stood there and asked him what it was, and very cool he just said "Kung-Fu"! It only took a few days, and I did my first trial training with Sifu Mischa Geiger, a master student of Sifu Rolli Krauer, the founder of the first Wing Chun organization (KARK) in Switzerland. Thanks to my friend Antonio, who not only showed me Wing Chun and therefore became my (still today) Si-Hing (older brother), but I also discovered about Bruce Lee, his movies and opened me the door to Asian martial arts in general. The martial arts training and at that time in particular Wing Chun Kung-Fu awakened me the urge for more knowledge and intensive training. I spent numerous hours studying Wing Chun and later other martial arts, which also motivated me to travel to countries to meet and study with different people, cultures, and philosophies.

Inspired by Kung-Fu! I must admit the TV series with David Carradine named "Kung-Fu" with the story of the traveling Shaolin monk, increased my interest in Asian martial arts and philosophies. It was late summer or early fall when the German television (ZDF) started this then new series. Every night when I went to bed, I thought about how cool it would be to be able to travel all around the world with "Kung-Fu in my hands". A few years later, on a mission not to find someone specific, but to learn from the best masters, after a long training trip in California, I met a nice Spanish girl. After living in her small apartment for a while, we decided to afford a bigger place together. While I was gathering and packing a few things from my parents' house for the new apartment, my mother came to me and handed me a box. In it she kept for me various things from my childhood. Some old books and magazines, as well as various photos from my school days, my first Judo-Gi and some patches from various martial arts schools I had attended as a young child. But in the box, there was also a German martial arts magazine from April 1973 with Bruce Lee on the cover, which immediately caught my attention. I remember thinking, "...strange, I was only four years old at the time! I wonder who owned this magazine? Who had bought it?" So, I asked my mother, but she too did not remember who had bought this magazine. She did remember, however, that my father had the habit of taking all kinds of magazines home with him after work. On the weekends he spent a lot of time reading. In this way he wanted to learn the German language faster, because his own mother tongue was Italian.

From Kung-Fu to Jiu-Jitsu and back! I teach since 1989 together with my brother Demetrio. Since then, we run two (separate) training groups (schools) that have (almost) nothing to do with each other. We also do not force students to take both programs, since personal progression and goals of the individual is important to us. But our way of teaching Jiu-Jitsu and Kung-Fu is quite similar because our Kung-Fu benefits from our Jiu-Jitsu knowledge and vice versa, our Jiu-Jitsu from Kung-Fu. Doing martial arts takes a lot of courage, perseverance, and passion. These are, in my opinion, three of the most important attributes that a money-hungry person will never possess. Maybe for a short time, but on the exceptionally long way, such people will stop and look for new simpler ways to reach their goal. I am someone who by nature, always looks forward and can adapt well to the times, but without ever losing sight of my mission and vision. We must remain true to ourselves if we also want to remain upright and faithful to our teachers and masters. Today, many are looking for "new things", but in my opinion, there are not really any to be found. Today, many try to develop something new, but everyone who seriously practices martial arts, must admit that everything is already there, and have been always there. Wing Chun Five Ways to Train Wooden Dummy In my last article/publication for Budo magazine we discussed the types of wooden dummy that are available, how they should respond when training and when the right time might be for you to get one. To take the next step in your training, let us assume you have now purchased your dummy or you have access to one regularly. We can now look at 5 Ways to Train Wooden Dummy. Positions, Flow, Power, Reborn Force and Play Positions The first thing to consider as with any of our forms is our positions not just with hands but body and feet too. The wooden dummy form (muk yan jong) is no different from any other form and getting it right at the beginning is vital, if you start with bad habits then they will continue and find it more difficult to rectify later when your Sifu watches and examines you later on. Our distance from the dummy is key to starting the form, then being routed enough to lock in your positions. The WCI wooden dummy form, like many others is slightly different when used in application, however, generally it is very similar to many other forms, and is broken down into 128 positions. Each of those has so much to explore, which we may be able to discuss in a future article perhaps.

Flow Once you have locked in the positions and memorized them, now is the time to find the ‘flow’. This is indicative of the many scenes we see made famous in films, like the Ip Man series where transitions between the learned positions become more fluid. At this stage we are not looking to be forceful, this could be left for single applications for conditioning purposes. We are looking to smoothly find our way between the 128 positions previously engraved in our minds eye and learned whilst maintaining good structure using

Dim Dim Ching theory (‘dim’-point ‘dim dim’-every point, ‘ching’ - clear). This theory means to make every movement visible, finish each movement before adding the next. When you begin to flow on the dummy you may realise some errors in your positions, having an understanding of these 5 ways to train can help you on your dummy as an adjunct to good practical teaching. Your ready for the next stage that most want to go to straight away. Take your time as with all forms. It’s better to be correct.

Power Your positions have improved, and your hands and arms are in the correct position whilst maintaining structure. You are now flowing through the positions visualizing some applications you have been taught, always training with the fight in mind. Now it is time to reset and return to ‘positions’ to begin adding power to each movement. Key points here are to make sure that your power is directed back through the dummies core, this is the part where we develop the understanding more of how our energy affects our structure and the dummy. Any corrections can be made at this point. If there is a point you struggle to conquer then, create a drill to help you through it, refer to your Instructor, Sifu or Master for this. Building your muscle memory is so very important and developing your power placement; and in tur n this will condition your brain and body to react. You can get injured very easily if you connect wrongly with the dummy remember this is a solid piece of wood not a human being so it does not give very much. The final part of the power section is adding it to your positions and beginning to flow again. A major key point is simple, train, train, train, it is not good enough just to memorize the 128 positions and then say you know

the Dummy form sections 1 to 8. Getting positions exact then being able to flow from one section to the next without thinking is very important, because in the fight scenario you have not got time to stop and think and as we all know hesitation gets you killed. So, Position before Execution being the key point here.

Reborn This section explores the understanding that further to ‘Clashing’ our power effectively dies as it stops dead for a moment or it is stronger and crashes through. In this instance your energy needs to be reborn upon clashing with the dummy or opponent. In the previous section, we looked at adding power to your flow. That power being sent into a dummy helps us understand how we need to react; we may turn or be turned. We may need to bounce away to ‘manage our distance’ in order to continue to attack or defend, or it may be that it helps us understand a wrestling element involved. A good instructor will always share this knowledge with you. Having given a brief introduction on ‘ways to train on the wooden dummy’. This brings us to, the need to understand that all these have the variable point, your opponent’s size, and the feedback you receive from clashing with them. Using myself as an example weighing less than 70kg my use of reborn energy is likely to be needed more against someone say 90kg or more. Clashing hard with a heavier set person will likely cause me more injury, so using that energy, can create movement for me that I can use to my advantage enabling me to continue to attack and defend. Perhaps open to debate is the fact that ‘smaller’ practitioners of any art have a need to be more correct in their use of their positions and training whereby a larger person’s power and strength may help them get away with smaller errors. For a heavier set person in general they are likely to use the clashing, striking and wrestling dummy elements to their advantage against a smaller opponent as the speed and flurry from such an attacker could overwhelm them unless stopped hard and fast. Evenly matched weights will use all dummy elements where necessary, that being said ALL wing chun practitioners should know about these 5 ways to Train the dummy and most importantly, WHY we train what we do, the way we do.... Always give your best.

Play This is the final element where with the fight in mind and with the applications you’ve been taught, you can now Play with the dummy. Striking using power, bouncing off using reborn energy and flowing to the next position to clash and maintain your rooting in order to displace your opponent. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula. When the Philippine Arnis spread in the West, to distinguish it from Fencing, it was called "the living hand fencing", because the hand that did not hold the weapon, actively collaborated in the actions of defense and offense.
