In this second video of the series, Justo Diéguez, creator of the KFM Keysi Fighting Method, teaches us to systematically implement the tools on which the principles and concepts of the method are based, starting from patterns and basic sequences of defense against middle distance fist attacks. y experience in the world of Martial Arts, long and inveterate, has shown me how often people’s illusions, those that are an essential part of their initial impulse to approach them, end up finding disappointment after years of searching and practice. This outcome, which is by no means exclusive to this environment, takes place all too often, mainly because of mismatches between what the Masters know and what they teach. No, not everyone lives inserted in such an explicit lie, but few are those who refrain from playing with the omnipotent fantasies of their students. The mystique that envelops this sector and others is not a negligible rotor in the evolutionary impulse and not many Masters know how to deal with it in an impeccable way. Whether for insecurity, whether for a customary habit, or even for cultural roots, the truth is that it's not at all strange to find that tendency to using and even promoting in their teaching, that so obvious tool for their daily work The problem that this generates is always longterm and is called disappointment. Disappointment is the death of trust and in that sense It is much more terrible than any other circumstance in order to produce a definitive distance, a separation or an abandonment to the Masters. The problem with most Masters and with the misuse of that role, is that they end up confusing their students, intentionally or unintentionally, mixing magic with illusionism. True magic does not need words, glitters or costumes to express itself, but few know how to abstract themselves from the power of deception to complete their presentation. The Oriental Master scorns the consistency of his example out of arrogance, and sometimes by faith in his method. I've seen it many times, especially in Masters from the East, and this brought about their discredit in the West after only a generation of students. The bad thing is that there were also quite a lot of Western Masters, who, having learned with them, ended up believing that simply by emulating their mistake they would also be Masters. On my own path I had much more relationship with Japanese Masters and I must say that the number of corpses they left behind making those mistakes was enormous. The reasons for this debacle have been many and varied, and not all attributable to them, but also, it must be said, to the cultural rinse that these disagreements generate. The oriental way

of teaching, particularly that of the Japanese, to put it mildly, doesn't abuse the verb, and is reluctant to explain. Well, this point would be admissible, as long as the student was smart enough to absorb this cultural distance. But the problem is much subtler, and there have been many teachers who, abusing this distance, have taken advantage to stimulate the fantasies of their students, with a "there is something beyond that someday (if you behave and keep paying your dues) I will tell you." That bad habit of having little slaves for anything is a too juicy temptation to be put aside. The traditional way of teaching in feudal Japan had its reasons for being so within that framework. A shoemaker would be a shoemaker if his father was, or what is the same, the fate of each one was socially written from birth. A pupil was but a slave to his Master, who managed what he taught drop by drop, bit by bit, for he knew that when the student thought he had learned enough he would run off. It's but natural, everyone wants to be manumitted from slavery! The distrust on which this relationship was based was a two-way street, framed in a closed society of cradle privileges. When they arrived in the West, confronted with the idea of freedom, of the individual and with capitalism itself, the Japanese understood that t h e g o l d e n i d o l o f t h i s c u l t u re w a s m o n e y, because the other, freedom, was a good unknown to them and something they couldn’t process. Those who did and have done so from their own culture have often been called “insane”, and it’s not surprising that some of them have embraced Western artistic forms with such devotion, to the point of achieving extreme mastery in their interpretation, be it flamenco or other disciplines. There are many, even in present-day Japan, who, in this dissociative process, give themselves completely to activities that, seen from the West, seem to us, to say the least, ridiculous and even bizarre, making their lives revolve around such practices, in a quasifanatical way. Yes; the acculturation of Japan after losing the war, and even before, with its industrial

modernization, left many contradictions open in the country, but it exported many of its own contradictions to the West with the diffusion of their Arts and culture. For the Westerner, for example, who had always thought that paying with money could fix everything, the immersion in other cultural forms that, although anachronistic, had strong roots in the pedagogy and modes of those new arts that fascinated him, was something rather hard. The most frequent result of such clash has been disenchantment, abandonment and estrangement. Both protagonists of the puzzle, that meeting on the border of two worlds, must yield so that things can flow, for the stubbornness in their own visions of the world will never help anything. One of the parts must be asked honesty and adaptation; the other, humanity and understanding. It is not worth saying "when in Rome, do as the Romans do". Both of them need to change, to interpret each other generously within the framework of their limitations, and to encourage sincere exchange, without easy manipulations, without crazy fantasies, in order to promote a healthy and beneficial encounter for both parties. Obscurantism and mystical metalanguage, do not help at all, Masters; nor does being always on the defensive either, because in the end, you attract what you emanate… And, please, refrain from pouring your own personal burdens and limitations in your teachings, because we're all different and not everything good or bad of a Master can be extrapolated to a student. As for the students, what can we ask them if not sincere dedication, loyalty, good sense and understanding? That the healthy critiques may differentiate the person and the character of the Master and, of course, to not fall into the vain impulse, the copy or the usurpation. Perhaps this way, with a little here and a little there, the thing will flow without so many rales, unequivocally bad for the mental, emotional and physical health of all. Let’s all be a little more human, life is too short to fool around.

What will it happen to Martial Arts after the pandemic? The Covid-19 has put an entire generation to the test by stopping the world. There is no doubt that there is a before and after and many have asked me how this will affect our industry. In my editorial, written in March 2020, during the first and confusing moments of what was still not classified as a pandemic and published immediately in April, I analyzed the constants behind this crisis and thus predicted the following (when no one dared to even give an approximation to what this brought us, nor to its duration): “There will be a before and after this epidemic. On the other hand, the accumulation of heavy planets in the sign of Capricorn, augurs that the economic crisis will extend in time and will only begin to dissipate from 2022/23 onwards, without forgetting the last push, which Pluto will always give (whose nature adores extremes!), in its last breath, when leaving the sign of Capricorn, in 2024." And I continued: “Nothing is eternally sustainable, except change itself. Resistance to change, the search for security are a constant in man. We don't like the unknown, that's why we experience transformations almost always, as something painful. In addition, we already know that no one voluntarily signs up to the path of consciousness and only from certain events, we are able to change the paradigms, both personal and group."

Opinion Before continuing I want to make a caveat about the use of mythological and astrological meanings, a custom of mine for those who know my writings. It has to be done because it is obvious that few people know the value of these analysis tools and their understanding is far from what they really are. Modern astrology has nothing to do with the newspaper horoscope. It’s a type of analysis based on the quantum idea of synergy. If everything is united, if all is a network of interactions, a universal mesh (Uni-versus = THE ONE "turning" ... in motion), beyond its law of cause effect, at a quantum level, there is a law of uniqueness: synergy (joint work), “the moment when the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”, therefore, “there is a greater efficiency or a greater effectiveness than when acting separately”. The transits of planets and luminaries from the sky

wouldn’t therefore do “anything” to people or groups, but through them, we could analyze, as in a mirror, the trends and directions that follow the forces. Personally, in the last forty years, I have had the opportunity to attest to the accuracy and relevance of these analyses and especially their usefulness in framing personal and group crises and changes. The unruliest ones can simply take my considerations of this subject as something individual, as a tool that I use to let my intuition flow, and perhaps that is why I come to make so often accurate predictions. I don’t care what you want to see, but if my reflections are of any use to you, I will accept them as good. If with this I also awaken interest in an ancient facet of human knowledge that deserves your attention, all the better, one just wants to help!

Opinion An extraordinary event That said, and continuing with that holistic and astrological analysis of the situation, we must add an event of vital importance that took place at the first degrees of Aquarius, where Jupiter and Saturn conjoined at the first degrees of this sign, coinciding with the winter solstice. For most who know nothing of astrology this means nothing, but we will say at least that it was an extraordinary event as it’s been the first conjunction in air sign (until now they dominated on earth). Jupiter and Saturn are known as the “cronocrators” who mark the generational changes. Even if you have not paid attention to astrology and you think it is stupid, surely you have heard of a concept that

In the analyzes of astrology and consequently in the collective consciousness, Aquarius is a sign that speaks of humanism, of the collective versus the paradigm of its opposite sign, Leo, that speaks of the idea of the individual. This dawn marked by the chronocrators indicates the beginning of a new cycle, first of 20 years, until its new conjunction, and then an even greater one, of a millennium, where everything linked to the leap from the idea of the individual versus the collective will make a difference. If capitalism came into question (and it is) as Pluto transits Capricorn, the new cycle into which the pandemic drives us will come to question the system of relationships between people and countries, leaving somehow behind the concept that everything is justified by greed and personal success or the accumulation of money. It is not in vain that the focus of the coronavirus comes from there, seen as an accelerating factor of this change that we are experiencing. Without entering into "conspiratorial" analysis and beyond all that, because even the great lords serve forces greater than themselves, it is an irrefutable fact that everything arose there.

Now, how will this affect our sector? To begin with, we should put Martial Arts in the general context. Martial Arts were created for war. As an activity, as knowledge, in the sense of social value, the disciplinary arts only have two practical utilities related to its original meaning today, namely: Police training and, to a lesser extent, military training, as this second group has specialized in such a way that in modern warfare, hand-tohand combat is generally limited to elite troops, the specialized commandos. Police training, in most advanced societies, is framed by criteria of a “proportionate” use of force, although its shock forces continue to benefit from this training. Who would have thought that the use of the shield (something so medieval!) would have the validity it currently has in the

demonstrations? On the other hand, the arrest and neutralization systems are not far from those established in the Middle Ages or in the classical Torite. It has been many decades since the other Martial Arts have specialized in this context, leading to sports, whether linked to competition, or to the simple and smooth maintenance of a healthy activity in the urban context. For another small part of practitioners, their practices have been the gateway to a foreign cultural and philosophical immersion, linking to schools with strong historical roots, generally Oriental, although in recent decades we have witnessed the rebirth of some of these practices by recalling Western fighting formulas. Some have even developed around the worship of local traditions and the reenactment of historical events. In the general environment of extreme polarization, we have also witnessed the emergence of forms of combat as spectacles, surpassing boxing in its audience ratings, which have made MMA the modern version of the Roman circus, blood, violence and show business. But the average practitioner who approaches the disciplinary arts, does not generally seek that type of preparation or practice, rather, a complete form of training, which allows him to live healthier and confront anxiety and violence, a factor that although it is postponed in modern

societies under the protective mantle of law and order, it is a fact naturally present in all of us, in its passive form, through fear and in its active form, through natural aggressiveness, rarely well channeled and usually contained. Most students do not pretend to be Connor McGregor, and they are certainly not willing to pay the price to reach his level of competition, hence the MMA has not accompanied in student numbers, their enormous media success. After decades of wars, the samurai had to adapt and find new meaning to their practices, a direction that paradoxically gave rise to their heyday. Thus, the martial sector, as you can see, has many derivations, which do not participate in the same way in the current situation. But if what we are talking about is the teaching activity that the Covid-19 has prevented, it’s evident that all gyms and organizations have suffered enormously as their activity has been impeded.

The most prepared in the face of modernity, had already made their first steps on the internet; those who were not prepared, started a race against the clock to get started. The product of these efforts is, and it will be, parallel and residual, compared to the face-to-face, but from now on it will tend to remain more as a source of information and business acquisition than anything else. Obviously many centers have closed or are going to close in the coming months, nobody can continue paying the rent without billing anything or almost nothing. Others will reinvent themselves and after the worst they will reopen new centers. Either way, face-to-face classes are essential in our internships, since the teacherstudent relationship and the sense of belonging to a group are one of the most powerful offers that our internships offer. The search for serenity, self-control, self-knowledge, have always been there, but now and after all this conscientious stop to which we have been exposed, they acquire an unusual relevance seen with the new eyes of those who looked the other way when they listened the word death or disease. The scientific approach to mobility, the mechanisms that structure it, will acquire even more value. The styles and teaching will tend to become even more structured (they have already been doing it) but this time adorned with a spark of creativity typical of the Aquarian. The

Living under pressure and in a hurry to enjoy spurious, generally compulsive and certainly temporary pleasures, has given rise to a search that allows us to face the fact of life from a soberer and realistic perspective (Saturn). Locked up in their homes, many have discovered that the main enemy is inside and does not rest, and that to face it every day, martial practices can be great allies. Confronting postponed aggressiveness, fears, laziness, one's own limits and establishing healthier parameters in our daily lives, appear now, and increasingly, as a necessity, a demand from the public, before which we have in our hands interesting answers and solutions to use through martial practice and education. Modulating, even a little, your offerings to this new paradigm, will in my opinion be a cause of growth and success in the next two decades. In the meantime, take heart, because we still have a long corridor to cross, because changes never come without suffering; there are no wars without casualties and without them, there are no permanent changes. Pluto, however, will leave its long stay in Capricorn in 2024 and from the ashes of that transit over the crowned heads of our society, it will mercilessly ignite those of Aquarius; When the time comes, nothing will resist that transformation that is now being announced to us; It is better for us to put the sails in the right direction, because adapting, and not being the strongest, is the key to survival. Phasom Muay: the secret weapon of Combat Muay Boran. By Marco De Cesaris

Combat Muay Boran is a modern-traditional style of Siamese fighting that combines ancient thai traditions with modern scientific methods. The final goal is to teach men and women of all physical and psychological conditions to fight, on the ring or in the street. The training systems devised by Thai masters of old are combined with modern Science, in order to “create” complete martial ar tists. Fr om a technical point of view, Combat Muay Boran syllabus in based on 78 strategic principles or Chern M u a y. These fundamental elements, once totally mastered, give practitioners a total understanding of all-out (martial) fighting. One of the “tricks” that make this style so ef fective is the use of sophisticated combinations of strikes instead of single blows in attack or when counterattacking. This advanced strategy is called Phasom Muay.

• Situation 1: direct attack A Muay fighter’s offensive strategy is designed to create openings in an opponent’s wall of defense: through correct timing and swift footwork, an expert Nak Muay will position himself at the right range to unleash powerful blows aimed at his opponent’s unprotected vulnerable spots. The best way to successfully reach an opponent’s weak spots is by combinations of strikes (Phasom Muay); each blow may carry the Nak Muay’s bodyweight behind it (full power blow) or may be a “mock blow”, designed to mislead and to open the way to a real heavy blow. The way strikes are combined makes the difference between an expert fighter and a novice: the best fighters deliver blows in series, strikes are linked in a natural manner, flowing smoothly one after the other. In creating combinations, two elements have to be considered: the leading weapon and the number of strokes. The weapons that are usually chosen as a lead are the straight punch (mahd trong), the front kick (tiip trong) or the vertical/diagonal round kick (tae trong/chieng), since they allow the fighter to attack while keeping most of his sensitive spots well covered. The follow up weapons will naturally flow after the lead: each fighter will develop his own

Each series of strikes is executed according to a specific rhythm that is based on the fighter’s ability to “feel” the moment, speeding up or slowing down the actions as required by the situation.

• Situation 2: counterattack When defending and counterattacking, a typical beginners’ mistake is to defend the opponent’s strike, throw a counter blow and wait. Big mistake. In fact, if you fight this way, you reduce drastically your chances of scoring and furthermore you open yourself to a possible retaliation. Just like direct attacks, also counterblows should be executed in series, not single strikes. This is the way of Combat Muay Boran. Safe training at Ashdod & Tel Aviv… In our April article, I began to share with you one of the many adventures experienced in Israel by our instructors and those in the phase of becoming one of them. We stopped by the classroom to learn about the theoretical material to be stored for the success of the final exam. Reminder of the theme to be presented orally “Securing a sensitive place”. The material to learn takes us straight to a must-see place in the Hebrew state… Rabin Square in the world-famous city… Tel Aviv, the city of light, so nicknamed simply because it is a city never sleeps.

The different roles… Always under the expert guidance of Ilan, the group is walking right on “Rabin Square”, where the sad event took place ... The assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on November 4, 1995. Very often there is significant discomfort when starting to train with weapons. Because we must first "tame" this object whose handling and reactions are completely new compared to empty-handed practice. A weapon will pose many challenges such as the notion of distance which will be different from the length of the weapon. Hagumo "Shizen" .... An origin that transcends time! According to UNESCO, “in its broadest sense, culture can be considered today as the set of distinctive, spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features that characterize a society or a social group. In addition to the arts, letters and sciences, it encompasses the forms of life and laws, value systems and traditions, beliefs.” Shizen culture, although it had its own writing system, has reached us through oral tradition during the recent history of Brazil, which is indeed extraordinary. There's no need returning on this aspect, which has already been extensively covered in other issues of Budo international. On the other hand, concerning the Shizen people's ancient history, obviously, there's nobody left who could testify. Not known trace of this long-persecuted culture - that's why it was kept secret, at a rather incredible level, if you think about it -. It only remains the oral history that has been handed down from generation to generation, along with and the huge amount of martial, psychological, sapient, religious, intellectual, linguistic, and artistic knowledge that make up this heritage. alking about oral tradition is talking also about the impossibility of really knowing what happened in the distant past. Human memory is fallible, it can embellish or silence certain facts, forge legends ... Unfortunately, today is impossible to unravel the true, the false, the partial, the imprecise or the exaggerated, in what concerns the oral narrative of our tradition. One solution, therefore - the other solution seems to depend on comparative linguistic studies of the Shizen language (Shizen Go) with the Ainu and Siberian languages -, would be trying, despite the difficulties, to compare the oral

tradition with what historians and archaeologists teach us about the geographical area, the period and the populations to which this culture is related. The Kaze no Ryu school, obviously, is not the only one in this case. Any “Kung-fu” practitioner - speaking of Chinese warrior arts, we'd rather say Wu Shu - might at some point in his life wonder about his school links with the Shaolin temple and borrow an identical path, based on comparison between the serious studies on this Temple and the amount of legends that surround it. regarding the Shizen culture and, of course, its martial aspects. Shizen culture is said to be linked to the Ainu people of Hokkaidō. This knowledge would have been born in four villages, now disappeared - Tayo, Yabu, Kawa and Yama -, several times destroyed by the Wa people of Yamato - the Japanese - and rebuilt during the Middle Ages, without a verifiable chronology being established. Once definitively destroyed this culture, its members, which we can assume to have been Ainu, dispersed among the Japanese and mixed with them to the point of losing all ethnic difference (although they kept secret their unique culture) in a country where forced assimilation policies were applied on the Ainu, at least since the 19th century. Historical insight will allow us to relate the oral tradition of the Kaze no Ryu school with facts or hypotheses established by researchers. Our references mainly come from PierreFrançois Souyri, one of the best European historians in Japan. This approach has the drawback of falling into a wellknown cognitive bias; the confirmation bias. Therefore, in all humility, and always using the conditional - for in the absence of further study, any statement would be presumptuous - allow me to present the few reflections that follow. And being absolutely honest in the process, it seems important to me to specify that a central point of the tradition is not confirmed by historical evidence so far: it's about the existence of these four famous villages, of which there is no archaeological trace. Nor written mention. The latest archaeological discoveries tell us that Japan has been inhabited since the Paleolithic, 45,000 years ago. The Ainu, with whom the Shizen are therefore related, descended from proto-Mongoloid populations that migrated to the archipelago in prehistoric times (the current Japanese would

be the result of the mixture of these populations with a more recent Mongoloid settlement). The Jômon hunter-gatherer civilization that ended in the 5th and 4th centuries BC in western Japan, continued until the 7th century AD in the far north of Honshū and in Hokkaidō. Archaeologists have discovered that the hunter-gatherers of the Jômon period settled very early. The earliest dwellings were semi-buried houses in shallow wells with rammed earth floors and grass roofs designed to collect rainwater with the help of storage jugs. Later they built large wooden houses. These data are particularly interesting for evaluating the oral tradition of the Kaze no Ryu school. “Shizen sha” is a Japanese expression, which means “person of nature”. However, Shizen people called themselves “Hagumo”, in their own language. This is an ancient term that was related to their way of life, since they lived in underground holes like spiders (in Japanese, “kumo” or “-gumo”). Thus, this people would name themselves by a name that would find its distant origin in a type of habitat characteristic of the Jômon civilization. In addition, an important detail, Jômon peoples were unaware of metallurgy. In this case, among the very old traditions of the school, its numerous warrior techniques with stones (shuseki), deer wood (Rokukaku), ropes (Nawa), bamboo (kochiku) have indeed come down to us, which would tend to demonstrate that our heritage would come from a people in the line of the late Jômon hunter-gatherers, who fought with rudimentary weapons from their natural environment. It is also confirmed by the somewhat heterodox use that the Shizen made of the weapons taken from the Japanese, who dominated metallurgy, during the confrontations.

In addition, a multitude of objects from the Jômon era have been found that were used for magical rituals and that recall shamanic practices. Ritual bows - ritual archery is still practiced in the school - harpoons and powerful hunting bows reveal, for specialists, one of the most advanced hunter-gatherer civilizations in the world. Of course, these same hunter-gatherers considered evolved during Japanese prehistory (which lasts until the 7th century, remember Hokkaidō), found themselves in a backward situation at the time of the Japanese conquest. Let us now address the conquest, a crucial issue for a Martial Arts school, whose techniques would have been developed to cope with the situation. The Imperial Chronicles, written in the early 8th century, relate the myths of the origin of Yamato, ancient Japan. They allude to the difficult conquest of an indigenous people by a foreign people. The first campaigns of the Wa of Yamato against the populations settled in the north of Honshū, the Emishi, date back to the 7th century. They managed to subdue some Emishi chiefs in 658. In 659, General Abe no Hirafu would have tried to dominate the populations of Ezo (another name for Hokkaidō). The sources speak of rituals of submission that took place on the beaches, presented as victories, but the Wa would have shown themselves unable to settle permanently in these regions. In the 8th century, the "barbarians" of Tōhoku (northeast of the island of Honshū) were brought under the control of the imperial armies. The victorious pacification campaigns multiplied and then the Japanese state sought to invade Hokkaidō again. Contacts with the Ainu populations led to important changes within the island's Jômon civilization: introduction of agriculture, weaving, pottery and iron instruments (only in the 12th century with the same observation made above about Shizen weapons). We speak then of Satsumon culture.

At the same time, a culture based on salmon fishing and big-game hunting developed on the eastern coast of Hokkaidō: the so-called Okhotsk Sea culture. The Satsumon culture and the Okhotsk Sea culture seem to have been in contact since the 12th century. From that moment on, these two cultures had relations with eastern Siberia, from where the cult of the “bear god”, so important in the culture of the Ainu, would come - The anthropologist Rémi Mathieu, in “La Patte de l'ours” (The Paw of the Bear), specifies that the supreme god of this town has the body of a bear, and therefore in the Shizen culture. Japanese drawing circa 1870 showing the sacrifice of a bear by the Ainu In fact, to keep to the martial aspect, this animal had a great influence on many of the school techniques: Hourou (the stick techniques intended to protect oneself, later used against samurai), Kumashisei (the bear guard in Jujutsu), Kuma shubi (the bear protection in Jujutsu), Kumagi (the bear cry used in Mugen Mukeru) Kuma Yari (the bear's spear equipped with multiple hooks to catch the enemy by the skin, also used against samurai) Kumaguchi (the bear's mouth, a control technique in Kusari Fundo). Historians seem to have little information about a peaceful or hostile relationship with the Ezo - here the term refers to the populations of the Satsumon culture - in these distant times. In contrast, relations with the Tōhoku Emishis are better documented. By paying some attention to military aspects, we can gain a better understanding of the importance of the struggle against indigenous peoples in the history of the Land of the Rising Sun. From the moment that Japan began to learn from China, starting in the 6th century, all populations located outside its sphere of influence, that is, the Emishi of Tōhoku and the Ezo of Hokkaidō, were considered barbarians. Japanese colonization of northern Honshū developed during the 8th century. Tax pressure and discrimination led to several Emishi riots. Historians today speak of a thirty-eight-year war that was silenced for a long time, and that demonstrates the resistance of non-Japanese populations. The northeast was finally pacified in the early 9th century. Wars resumed in the 11th century. They were decisive in the evolution of the Japanese form of combat, since the superiority of the warriors on horseback using the bow led to the abandonment of the Chinese infantry as the main means of combat. This is how the Way of the Bow and the Horse, “Kyuba no Michi”, developed. Furthermore, for many historians, the warrior culture and virtues of the populations of northeastern Japan deeply influenced and even gave rise to the Japanese warrior culture as we know it today.

Thus, warfare traditions and the Ainu, Ezo or Emishi warriors, whatever name they are given, were both admired and feared by the Yamato invaders. Fear combined with the ignorance of these peoples gave rise to the Japanese belief that Hokkaidō was populated by demons (Oni). Oral tradition. In fact, many Shizen strategies seem to confirm this belief. As an example, we can talk about Shuseki techniques, invisible to other aggressors (stones were hidden in the hands), which produced physical damages that a fighter with bare hands was unable to cause, thus giving his enemies the impression that the samurai had been attacked by demons. We can also mention, within strategic studies - and in the art of deceiving or Boryaku - the use in the forest of demon masks by children to terrorize and cow the enemy using their own beliefs (Kyougaku: strategy to impress, to surprise). In the 13th century, on the other hand, northern Honshū and southern Hokkaidō came under the influence of Japanese feudal lords. It is interesting to note that, according to P.F. Souyri, the region also became a confinement zone for the pirates, bandits and conspirators who were captured by the Shogun's forces. It is another information that overlaps with the oral tradition of the school, and mentions this mixture of populations at the origin of the Shizen culture, but also of their warrior techniques, that suffered the influence of specifically Japanese Martial Arts. It's also a time when products from China are introduced to Hokkaidō. It can be hypothesized that with these products, combat techniques could also travel, such as the Kenpojutsu, that is studied at the chuden level of the school, and whose Chinese origin has been even demonstrated. The 13th century seems to be a turning point because, always according to P.F. Souyri, it's the moment when the Satsumon and Sea of Okhotsk cultures merged to give birth to the Ainu civilization. The Ainu abandoned pottery and agriculture to specialize in fishing and hunting. Here again, the quantity of technical names linked to fishing in the martial nomenclature is a point that would confirm the lineage: Gyoson (techniques of fishing villages), Tekagi no hou (hook method), Ooebi no hou (the method of lobster), Ebi osae (shrimp control), Maguro osae (tuna control), Tako no den (octopus’ tradition), Sameguchi (shark's mouth) ... By the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century, Ainu and Japanese lived together in the regions of Aomori and Hakodate. We also find the first Japanese mixed-race people (hypothesis) called wataritô and who were engaged in various types of traffic and commerce. Still, the harmonious relations seem to have been short-lived, as from 1320 to 1322 there was an uprising of the peoples of Ezo. Under the Ashikaga shoguns, vassal warriors called Ando seem to have extended their rule over most of Hokkaidō. In the 15th century, they took the title of Hi no Moto Shogun, that is, "commanding general who reigns in the territory where the sun rises." But the Ainu, hunter, gatherer and trader people, once again revolted against these newcomers who had taken over the land. In 1457, an Ainu chief from the Koshama'in region besieged Hakodate and other fortified trading posts. The Kakizaki, vassals of the Ando, managed to quell the revolt. Tensions between the Japanese settlers and the Ainu were strong

Japón enough to last for several centuries, which would confirm the tradition of the school that presents the Shizen as a persecuted people (linked to the forced assimilation of the Ainu). A treaty fixing the territorial limits of each was signed in 1551. However, at the end of the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi recognized the Kakizaki (now Matsumae) as lords of Ezo and representatives of central Japanese power. Therefore, it is likely that, from this time, perhaps a little earlier (15th century?), or even a little later (17th century?), difficult to say, the Shizen were diluted with the Japanese and perpetuated their culture in the greatest secrecy, while incorporating elements specific to Japanese culture, especially in the arts of war. Different opportunities, pleasant moments, conversations with different teachers from different eras, and a lot of other information, have been enriching us and teaching us day by day about the realities experienced by significant names such as Hideo Sasaki (USA), Suji Kitami (Canada), Masao Ebihara, Kunio Araki, and so many others who emigrated to foreign countries. As much as each one possessed their own idiosyncrasies, they shared the way of seeing life and the culture they professed. In a text translated by Araki Sensei authored by Hideo Sasaki, it's explained that in the 20th century, masters separated the quality of their students through terms that were formerly used by the Chinese military class. Schools were divided into two paths: Shuho - the spiritual path. Shiho - the traditional, cultural path

(which included Martial Arts only as a subject). It all started with the way these students presented themselves or crossed the paths of professors and teachers: Gaikomo. Gaikomo was divided into three: Teishuto - presented by someone outside. Teishuta - presented by someone from within.

Rikodasu - self-presented (the term itself refers to someone who came alone). In various segments of Eastern culture, if we can put it that way, wisdom implied having a clean track record. To do this, according to the most learned, it was traditionally said that, in the first place, the student needed to be skilled enough as to know how to examine his own desire and find the right master who would attend him in his personal history. Then he needed to be skilled enough to follow the master. And finally, he also must be skilled enough to absorb and assimilate the master's understanding and wisdom. Such a mechanism, according to the Shuho (spiritual path), implied first of all realizing that all things can be seen according to two levels of reality: the relative or conventional level, and the absolute or ultimate level. These two truths correspond to two points of view, to two views of reality: the truth or relative view is conventional or relatively true, but absolutely illusory; and the absolute truth or vision is definitely true, the authentic experience beyond all illusion. From Gaikomo, the pupil studied for a year or two until he was considered welcome: Gosaide. The Gosaide was divided into three: Yuniko: the student was welcomed because someone had compassion for him. Yunike: when the whole group offered him a welcome. Yunika: when an important teacher recommended it. The path was divided into stages: Rukoga - training. Rikaga - understanding, discernment. Sairuke - final stage. The transmission of knowledge represented the completion of the formal training of a Kuube (student). Afterwards, he studied until his confirmation as Joho (teacher). The Joho (Master) level could be received in three ways: Tonko: through the appointment of an older Joho. Hoshen: personal sacrifice (exams, tests and a minimum period of 13 to 17 years). Jungen: indicated by monks or priests who believed they had obtained the information through some spiritual path.

Regardless of how it was, their differences were structured as a mechanism that throughout their lives could be considered the same, even if they were not. This last consideration indicated the level of understanding a Joho could carry about his culture. Then they said: A Joho who graduates through Hoshen must speak the language perfectly, know the paths determined by Sorobeji, Mukeito, MieShu, Habunda, Hobunda, Koruge ... and so many others. The most important or representative positions are: Tougaka - The Leader Tonbo: vagabonds from ancient Japan who came and went offering help. Miryoku - Priest Joho - Master In each position presented, the lines and schools seek to follow their own identity and importance. It is worth noting that, over the years, the lineage structured it from its own criteria. Given this importance, the master's view on the disciple defines him as the connection point between the past and the future. However, in the presence of other masters, it's common to ask the path travelled to that point using the term “Shuho”. This term refers to the height that a person represents. In Shuho, the first transmission of the master's precepts to the student, known as Shigebunta, is confirmed when the master seeks to identify - through an interview with the student - if he is able to manifest the learned precepts in his daily life. Shizen teachings have the ability to be preserved by any cultural context. The reason for this is that they are based on the fundamental nature of beings and things. With regard to the philosophical approach, its way of teaching is beyond any form. It is based on the understanding of being transcendent to the external form.

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! By Grandmaster John Pellegrini

With 2020 behind us (with most people glad to see it pass into history) and already in the 3rd month of 2021, there should be renewed hope for a long-awaited normalization of our everyday lives. Alas, that is not the case. As I am writing this, a new round of useless, draconian, absurd restrictions, are being enforced around the world under the guise of “saving lives”, and arrogantly claiming to be for our own good. We are treated like helpless, ignorant children, who need those in authority to protect us from ourselves. And our beloved Martial Arts community continues to suffer and be decimated. The political aristocracy has declared that our business is “not essential” and not worthy of being saved. To them we are inconsequential, insignificant, collateral damage. reviously, I discussed how our industry is trying to adapt, evolve and survive during this unprecedented crisis using the tools and innovations of modern technology, and I am glad to report that we have begun to experience some limited but positive results. Hopefully we will continue to build on that; we are definitely not giving up. And in the same indomitable spirit of perseverance, I want to share with you another curious and interesting development that I believe will, in some measure, contribute to the general welfare of the Martial Arts community. Having spent the last four decades as a professional Martial Artist, I find myself in the privileged position to know and be friends with many prominent Grandmasters, leaders of our industry, pioneers, celebrities, champions and famous personalities. All of us share the same passion for the Arts, and we are totally committed to the preservation of our disciplines and our special, elite society. In the last year we have all struggled to continue on our journey, trying to be active, sharing ideas, and being supportive of each other’s efforts. It should be no surprise then, that with such a large pool of talents, creativity, backgrounds, cultures and experiences, several exciting projects have come to life, including a few unusual endeavors not directly related to the Martial Arts. Regardless of their outward appearance or their different expressions, these activities were all designed and intended to answer the two most important questions of these difficult times. I articulated those two questions in my previous essay (“A Brave New World?”) and they are: How do we stay connected to our students? -and- How do we remain relevant? As already mentioned, with most Martial Arts programs on lock-down or severely restricted, Instructors, refusing to go into forced hibernation, have resorted to technology and social media to offer training options to their students. Incidentally, many of those students (and their families), unable to go to work or school, were also confined at home, with a lot more “down-time” available needing to be filled with meaningful,

useful, or at least, fun activities. And so it happened, that over the last few months, some of us in the Martial Arts community decided to exploit the same technologies and social media tools to introduce original ideas, and new projects to support our efforts to accomplish our tween objectives: staying connected and remaining relevant. However, we soon realized that, by fortuitous coincidence, those ideas and projects were producing an additional significant benefit: they entertained! At a time when many people feel depressed, frustrated, lonely and confused, our new projects are bringing smiles and welcome distraction. Also, the students, by availing themselves of this positive, interesting and fun connection with people they know, like, trust and respect, are better able to fight the inevitable feelings of isolation and boredom experienced in these troubled times. So, what exactly are these projects that we have launched to engage, entertain and lift the spirit of the Martial Arts community? They are shows, programs and podcasts featuring interviews with celebrities, sharing of fun experiences, cooking classes, discussions of many topics such as music, films, travel, current events, and, of course, Martial Arts news. There are already tens of thousands of technical videos on YouTube, plenty of serious discussion forums, hundreds of books and articles covering every technical, historical and philosophical aspect of the Martial Arts. Our shows are designed to be interesting, informative, but also light-hearted, fun and sometimes even a little zany. That’s Entertainment! And if you are wondering why I chose those words for the title of this essay, it is because they express so simply the spirit and the attitude I want to convey. But honestly, I cannot take credit for that phrase. “That’s Entertainment!” is the title of a very successful, starstudded, 1974 MGM film (with two sequels in 1976 & 1994). And the title of that film was actually taken from the title of an original song featured in the 1953 MGM musical film “The Band Wagon” (How is that for a little entertainment trivia?). Even in the best of times, many Martial Arts Instructors have a tendency of taking themselves too seriously, frowning on humor, and thinking that levity is somehow inappropriate, disrespectful or

demeaning to the Arts. I respectfully disagree. Especially at this most difficult and unpleasant time in our history, we must try to maintain a sense of humor with a touch of good, old-fashion comedy. That may bring us some solace and a small measure of optimism. We badly need it. It may also be comforting to believe that something positive will eventually come out of every tragedy, and it is often true. The crisis currently devastating the Martial Arts world could be one of those cases: unprecedented adversities inducing us to produce different, unconventional ways to stay connected, with the resulting beneficial effect of cementing old bonds and creating new ones. In fact, an unexpected development of the new projects discussed above is that they are also attracting vast audiences of non-martial artists. Regardless if it is due to boredom, curiosity or actual interest, thousands of people are, for the first time in their lives, connecting to our community, getting to know Martial Arts personalities, and being exposed to our great disciplines. How many of them will become practitioners or develop a lifelong passion for the Arts it’s impossible to know, but I am confident that some will, and we will have those new shows and programs to thank for. Maybe it’s only Entertainment…. But right now we can use all the help we can get.

Master Gianluca Frisan presents a unique project dedicated to Pencak Silat and Kyusho, in collaboration with one of the greatest exponents of this Indonesian art, Mas Denis Brecevaz. Both teachers present the essence of the “Bela Diri” martial aspect of the Nusantara style, and analyze the way in which traditional warfare techniques hide Kyusho’s attacks to the neurological and vascular system. Kyusho is the “Turbo” of every technique, it's that which can exponentially increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our action. The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. We will start with the basic hooking, the “Regatón” to our opponent’s “Burra”, the way of training them, as well as some variants and applications, and their cons. Wing Tsun WingTsun Problems and Solutions (part 2) 3. - SECRECY: Secrecy in the context of Kungfu-Wushu shu consists of keeping important knowledge for the development of martial skills and not revealing it to the students themselves, or doing it only to a select few. In Chinese culture, and especially in Kung fu, secrecy has been carried to unhealthy extremes. Now is trendy denying it, but anyone who has done a little research on Kung fu has run into this problem. In its mildest version, what secrecy does is to slow down the student's progress, delaying the instruction to a greater or lesser extent. For example, an instructor may spend a whole month doing the vertical fist movement at the beginning of the Siu Nin Tao form for several hours a day with the excuse that, as long as he doesn’t manage to do the first technique correctly, there is no point in teaching him the second. In reality, every expert knows that doing any WT technique correctly requires a global coordination of the whole body, and that’s only obtained after a multitude of dif fer ent exer cises. So, repeating tens of thousands of times an isolated arm movement serves for little more than wasting time and money, and, very possibly, developing a tendonitis in the elbow. n its harshest (and most prevalent) version, secrecy deliberately hides the training methods and tactical elements necessary to master the system and make its techniques work. What is kept is not the so-called "secret techniques", but the training principles without which it would be simply impossible to develop advanced capabilities, such as the elastic power, the coordination between the upper and lower parts of the body, relaxation, unloading the opponent's force, tactics, reinforcing joints and bones, explosiveness, hitting power in a very short space, etc. These secrets were taught exclusively to a few chosen pupils, and sometimes even just one of them. Just as well,

Wing Tsun this tendency to secrecy caused a lot of knowledge to be lost (due to the untimely death of the "successor", or because he either couldn’t or didn’t know how to find someone to whom transmit the entire system). Thus, we can say that some styles of Kung-fu can become a caricature of what they originally were. Let's look at some examples. Master ChanWah Sun only transmitted the medical techniques to his son (“Dit Da” Chinese osteopathy) and not to the rest of his students (including Yip Man), therefore Yip Man couldn't transmit that knowledge to his students. Wing Tsun sifus (like Wong Shun Leung) who practiced Dit Da were forced to learn from other sources. A Spanish teacher of another well-known South China style acknowledged that he knew that his teacher would only teach the whole system to his son, and not to him or to other classmates who had been in the school for decades. I also remember an interview with a famous Chinese master from another style who said quite naturally that in public demonstrations he showed wrong techniques on purpose. And finally, one of the most recognized exponents of a certain famous internal style, has made public on the Internet that he considers himself scammed by his late teacher, with whom he was 20 years, and of whom he was considered his closest disciple, because after paying more than a million dollars, he did not pass on to him certain important technical elements and methods. What reasons could have led Chinese masters to practice secrecy? First, the need to beware of treacherous disciples. By concealing important elements, they could maintain the level of the disciples controlled and limited in such a way that, in case of betrayal, they couldn't defeat the teacher and take over the school or compete with him. Second, to prevent specific techniques and principles of their system from becoming known to rival styles, and avoid they could develop ways to neutralize them. And thirdly, to have time to get to know the student thoroughly, in order to prevent a potentially deadly combat system from falling into the hands of criminals or murderers. Are these three reasons in force today? I think the question of traitorous disciples is outdated, advertising and marketing being much more "deadly". For the same reason, in the age of firearms (and nuclear weapons) where you no longer fight hand-to-hand, I believe that Kung fu can't be considered a secret weapon. Now, as for the third reason, that is, preventing a lifethreatening combat system from falling into the hands of criminals or killers, I think it remains the only one compelling reason in force. It wouldn't be a good idea to teach definitive techniques to a violent person or a woman abuser, for example. Interestingly, among the Chinese (especially in

Hong Kong) it has always been considered that the Chinese mafia practiced Kung fu. Here, more than secrecy, what must be observed and kept is the right of admission, not allowing antisocial elements to enter our schools. The truth is that, by dint of hiding or disguising what is done, what has often been achieved is a caricature of the authentic Chinese Martial Art, and it is not surprising that in many places it is totally discredited. What sense can it make that on a planet with 7 billion inhabitants there are only 3 or 4 people who have really learned and mastered this or that style of Kung fu? And even more, what is the use of thousands of other students practicing a disabled or decaffeinated system in the name of who knows what tradition? What has actually happened is that certain training methods have been lost, or are about to be lost. Some Chinese masters, aware of this, have begun to open their hands and show the entire system (or what is left) without keeping anything for themselves. In this sense, I think that in the case of the WT we are lucky, because today there are no reserves (except financial) to learn it, although I am sure that some things were lost along the path (such as osteopathic techniques). In other systems, which I will not mention now, I know that the level of secrecy is still very high, which would explain the very low number of people who achieve great capacity with those styles. To my view, secrecy, practiced at all levels of knowledge and not only in Martial Arts, has been a factor of stagnation and involution of Chinese civilization, and the sooner it disappears, the sooner its culture will reach the diffusion and recognition it deserves.

4. - MONEY: They say that the Wing Tsun is the most expensive style in the world. The truth is that Kung Fu has always been something for the wealthy. Let me tell you an anecdote that seemed most curious to me at the time, and that comes to the point I want to refer to next: to learn at the ChanWah Sun's school, G.M. Yip Man paid what it was a fortune back then. Specifically, 20 silver taels as registration, and 8

silver taels as a monthly fee. According to Yip Man, with 20 taels, a man could “get married” (that is, pay the wedding and the dowry for the bride ...), and he could buy approximately 1 ton of rice, that is, he could feed ten people during one year. Transferred to today's Spain, 20 silver taels would represent between 10,000 and 20,000 current euros. And 8 silver taels to pay for monthly classes would be between 3000 and 6000 euros. I know of a certain instructor who in the People's Republic of China charges 300 Euros per hour of private lessons to a foreign student. My sigung, Keith Kernspecht, in his early days studied various Chinese styles and paid exorbitant amounts for the classes he received. I myself have paid up to 1000 Euros for a masterclass in Germany. When someone who doesn’t belong in the WT environment hears these things, brands us as insane, because we aren't talking about the discovery of cold fusion or the cure for cancer, no; we are simple talking about a passion, or perhaps a hobby, but nothing more. Outside the Wing Tsun (or Kung fu) microcosm, the value of what we do is more or less on the same level as aerobics or playing cards... Only that peculiar state of infatuation, which is typical of Kung fu and Martial Arts fans makes us continue for years and years, paying these exaggerated amounts in exchange, sometimes, for very little. But love is blind until it's over. Many, after 15 or 20 years of "marriage", left and created their own organizations, with greater or lesser success. The problem is that most of them limited themselves to cloning the system, with the difference that at the top of the organizational pyramid they set themselves up, to charge the same or slightly

less than their original organizations. But the diversification of the offer also brought about a competition that lowered prices and things are still in a process of change. The bad news is that such a high cost has had two consequences, in my opinion, quite damaging in themselves: - It has blocked access to learning, preventing people with perseverance and talent from completing the system. - It has slowed down this learning a lot because it is necessary to save for years to be able to pay for the corresponding classes. It seems at least strange that it is more expensive and takes longer to be a WT teacher than to be a neurosurgeon or architect. I'm convinced that is possible to earn a good living with affordable fees, and achieve a balance between quality full-time professional instructors and reasonable prices.

5. - TIME: Closely related to the three previous problems - sectarianism, secrecy and money - is the fourth: the excessive time period it takes to learn the whole system. While it's true that there is a lot of work to be done, if a student is talented, dedicated and trains in an intense and intelligent way for several hours a day, why should he "wait" for certain periods of time to pass before being taught each level?

Wing Tsun Let's see: 12 student grades X 3 months each = 36 months If we add the sections for technical degree (more or less one year) Totally is four years for the first technical degree as a minimum. Then ... for the transition from first to second technical degree, two years of practice were required. Passing from the second to the third technical degree took a minimum of three years of practice. For the passage from third to fourth, four years, and so on until the 7th Practical Grade. If we add the estimated minimum times for the grade step, we will get a huge surprise ... If we add the minimum time estimated for each passing of grade, we will get a huge surprise: NEARLY 30 YEARS of practice to reach the fifth grade (Wing Tsun Master). Is this logical? Obviously is not! The basic level is usually the most difficult (starting from scratch), and it would correspond up to the first technical degree: It includes: 12 Lat Sao programs 2 Forms (Siu Nin Tao and Cham Kiu Tao) Darn Chi Sao Luk Sao and Poon Sao (rolling) 4 Chi Sao sections I believe that a person with some talent and a lot of work could reasonably master it in about two years or less, but it is more likely that it takes him or her between two and a half and three years. But from there, progress is usually much faster thanks to the base acquired, and I'm sure that most students, training daily between 90 minutes and two hours with a good teacher, could learn the rest of the system in about 4 years. Based on my teaching experience, I believe that the complete system can be learned in a time period ranging from 5 to 10 years. Personally, I have created a 5-year program to teach the whole program, because afterwards there is a whole world of development that is even more interesting: in-depth internal training. I have found that it's possible to bring exercises from the advanced level to the basic level (such as Chi Gerk) that students learn without problems, and that allow them to progress faster in their level. As a teacher, my goal is and must always be that my students learn as quickly as possible and with higher levels of understanding. This will generate a positive dynamic ... If there is a better level, I myself will be able to train with my own students and advance in the same way.

6. - EGO and VANITY To get the best out of our training, it is very helpful to acquire the attitude that Tai Chi master Cheng Man Ching called "investing in losses." This means accepting losses to improve and learn. When we are practicing an exercise with a partner, pride and vanity can spoil our progress.

“Larga Mano” (Long Hand) simply means long-distance combat, a method that teaches you to stay away from your opponent and hurt him without even entering the hand-to-hand distance. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula. When the Philippine Arnis spread in the West, to distinguish it from Fencing, it was called "the living hand fencing", because the hand that did not hold the weapon, actively collaborated in the actions of defense and offense. When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense.
