I am Gianluca Frisan, National Referent of the Kyusho CSEN and European Reference of the Kyusho Institute, I welcome you to the new Kyusho Breakdown DVD series. First of all, I want to thank my Master Mark Kline, founder of the Kyusho Institute, an international Kyusho organization, for all the teachings that he has given me since 1997 and continues to give me. Much of what we will discuss today is the result of my training with GM Mark Kline. So thanks again! Bunkai means Analysis, and we will analyze in the first DVD of this series, a “basic” movement, the Gedan Barai, also called “lower block", a movement that is found in almost every Kata of every Karate style. We will see the applications of our Kyusho CSEN / Kyusho Institute program, analyzing them through the knowledge of Kyusho, bearing in mind that the objective is not that of sports but personal defense. When a form, a Kata, is purely aesthetic, it has no value for your personal defense. Each movement must have a deep meaning to you, in fact at least 3. The same movement can be done differently, depending on what I am currently visualizing, that is, the actual action that I am experiencing while practicing the form. Only in this way will this Kata be alive and real, thus turning into a superior and useful form of training.

uch has been written about the ultimate meaning of the Martial Arts. It is a controversy that brings with it all kinds of versions. It is natural to expect each style in some explicit or implicit way to deal with the subject. This text does not attempt to describe a “true” version weighed against others that are false, rather it is simply trying to trigger some reflection on all the components of the martial associations so that beyond the formal differences, they dig down into our depths for the common roots in our highest motivations and goals. In my opinion, all the versions about this question are acceptable, and it is like the Indian story of the elephant touched by blind men who tried to describe it: all of them have a part of the truth. The one who touched his trunk affirmed that the elephant was long, rough, and flexible; the one who felt around his foot said it was strong, solid, and heavy; the one who felt his ears, said it was agile, cartilaginous, and restless. No version from the blind men was false, but of course all were incomplete. Obviously, in order to define an elephant, the best thing is to contemplate it as a whole and in its natural habitat, but for that, both eyes are necessary, what the blind men didn’t have. However, even using sight, not all the versions will be equal. Some versions will be more exact and deeper than others in so far as this theme is concerned. I don’t want to say better, but at least more complete when they establish their criteria from a much more penetrating reflection on the keys of the mystery of man. When one is asking about why one began martial practice, there are many answers. The more seasoned go deeply into themselves and swim around in their interiors to comprehend that in the end the first possession of the student’s soul is always the result of an act of being able that touched him profoundly. It doesn’t have to be something grandiloquent; it might even be something ridiculous, or apparently absurd, casual, or banal. Was it that Bruce Lee film? The Kung Fu series? Or because your cousin hit you? If we look into this with our hand on our heart, we will discover that behind every story there is always a much deeper motivation, an associated emotion.

Something touched a nerve of your being, something that made you vibrate, inspiring in you the desire to acquire knowledge that would help you to walk through life in a different way, in a nobler and stronger way; something that would make you wiser, more courageous, and more powerful. Nowadays, one of the more frequent versions of the ultimate meaning of the Martial is the so often mentioned efficiency. Nonetheless, in my opinion, this is not by itself an objective, rather a means and sometimes even an excrescence typical of the path. In the context of a materialistic world, it is logical that this vision gains weight in the values of the unconscious collective, since everything that doesn’t have a practical and tangible application, preferably here and now, is scorned at this time in history. Fortunately, the disciplinary Arts have a long tradition and a pertinacious memory that has been able to keep the message and the ultimate mystery alive to our times. So, despite the deployment of individuals filled up to their ears with hormones and covered with flamboyant muscular armor that desensitizes them in their own shells, willing to act like morons for that powerful gentleman called money; even today, as a silent undercurrent, the students in their great majority are after other, much more subtle ends, even without knowing it. The old ones referred to efficiency as the surprising and almost supernatural achievements voiced in their heroic myths. So many times exaggerated, these achievements nonetheless symbolized other powers, real ones, which arose on the path of knowledge. When the student works his Art adequately under the skilled guidance of a good Master, he comes to connect with other states of consciousness that allow him to perceive and, of course, take advantage of the emerging forces. The development of perception is one of the natural results of training. By resolving tensions and developing a greater capacity for and sensitivity to energy, the follower prepares his body and mind to open up to experiences that would be unthinkable in any other way. This development very soon finds applications as much in one’s work in the dojo as in one’s day-to-day life. These transformations are evident and it’s sure that all of you who have trained know what I am referring to. One is lighter, more acute, more relaxed and fluid. But it is in the framework of the

dojo where the change is made more and more clear. A kind of sixth sense starts to appear and naturally one begins to live new experiences in combat. In the end, any attack can be annulled with an anticipated movement, but the perceiving and acting sufficiently in the face of it is a magnificent achievement that demonstrates something more than great skill; it denotes a superior perception, a connection that transcends the usual perceptive limits. This ability has been demonstrated by in many grand Masters who have tried to transmit it, many times creating in their desperate perseverance, new styles that were able to express the ineffable. Their message has illuminated many paths, but their students have not always understood what these masters wanted to transmit to them. Ueshiba didn’t attain his achievements by practicing Aikido, he created Aikido because he already had the gift. It is, then, an awakening of something transcendent on the path, but it is not, as in the case of efficiency, a definitive end in and of itself, as attractive as it might seem to us. Altered and transcendent states of perception are a means toward the attainment of a superior goal and this is no other than to make the mystery—in capital letters—real in ourselves. The first and last mystery is to transcend our individual consciousness and realize the unity of things. Naturally, such an achievement doesn’t come from one day to the next, rather in the majority of the cases it comes furtively, lying in wait for the neophyte to be able to accommodate it. On such a path, advances are manifestly linked to changes in our perception and consciousness that unmistakably point to the fact that physical barriers are an illusion. Modern physics has already grasped this, but such intellectual knowledge, at the reach of very few, doesn’t bring them closer to the day-to-day realization of the terrifying and powerful consequences that such a thing implies. However, the Martial artist on the path of knowledge can indeed know them, and live them.

The gun slingers look at each other intensely, time seems to stop. Who will draw first? Who will be faster? The waves of form arise out of emptiness creating matter continuously, equating, in the essence of the sub-atomic world, stones and human beings. Everyone and everything participates in that oneness where all things come from. The man of knowledge, realizing that truth in himself, doesn’t do it by way of intellectual knowledge, it is something that he feels in his guts, and as a consequence, he draws a millisecond before his opponent, just when the opponent is deciding and is most vulnerable. Master Yoda in that marvelous mythological saga of our times, “Star Wars”, announces to his disciple Skywalker (by the way, consider the name: one who walks in the sky!): “There’s a disturbance in the force!” When such a union is realized, there is no sufficient distance that separates things or beings, and men of knowledge are capable of perceiving said alterations no matter how subtle they might be. If it’s true that the powers that are poorly referred to as supernatural are not the objective of the path, they are frequently symptoms of the evolution of a superior understanding, and given that for man everything is the fruit of his own personal catalog, or what is the same, of his level of consciousness, if you believe in the techniques as a path, then what you will have is a technical level of understanding. If you uphold that the key is in Ki, your perceptive level will dwell there and with luck you will be a skilled conjurer. But if your thing is the great way and you try to unveil the mystery of Being, even if the most probable outcome is that you never go beyond being a clown, well, friend, who would equal you in your achievement? In any case, for the most ardent materialists, don’t ever forget the teaching implicit in the old proverb from Kyudo: “To hit the target, it is necessary to aim upward.” Why should one conform to less?

It has been my personal goal (during more than 20 years of teaching) to put the most functional aspects of JKD into a format that can be easily absorbed by the average individual. I originally developed this program for our East Coast Navy SEALs (they have so little time to allocate to martial arts, I was forced to streamline the most important elements into a formula that could be learned very quickly). HAVE A GAME PLAN In the world of professional sports, athletes spend surprisingly little time on their game skills (like shooting baskets, catching passes, etc.), and more time on developing, learning, and running specific plays. A National Football League coach would never send his team into the Super Bowl without a game plan. You should have the same approach to self-defense. Possessing skills and techniques alone aren't enough; you need to have an agenda. The first few moments of an attack, when the adrenaline starts pumping and your heart starts racing, is not the appropriate time to try to formulate a defensive strategy! You need a game plan that you can practice ahead of time so in the event of a crisis, you will be able to instinctively do what it takes to survive.

Paul Vunak OUR GAME PLAN: THE RAT SYSTEM (Rapid Assault Tactics) Angelo Dundee, trainer of the legendary Muhammad Ali, once proclaimed, "The first-est with the most-est is the bestest!" He understood that perhaps the single most important attribute one could possess in an all-out streetlight is overwhelming one's opponent. And by "overwhelming" I do not mean just physically blasting through someone, but overwhelming him emotionally as well. This means we are going to rattle this opponent - cause him to flinch, shut his eyes, cover up, and perhaps turn away. Once this occurs, the rest of the fight gets exponentially easier. The difficulty of any streetlight lies in that zone where both fighters are trading blows. This is when you are most vulnerable, especially if your opponent is larger and stronger. The ability to “turn on” a sudden burst of firepower, assaulting your opponent as rapidly as possible, is an indispensable asset. The principles of Rapid Assault Tactics come directly from Bruce Lee. Although he never formally promoted this systematic approach to an altercation (it just came naturally to him), we have only to examine his tactics when he considered a fight to be serious to see these principles in action. One of Bruce Lee's greatest assets was the way he began an encounter in a seemingly complete state of relaxation and then suddenly erupted in movement almost too fast for the eye to see. In a fight, Bruce would intercept his opponent before hecould even finish launching his blow. This interception would typically be a quick shot to the eyes, knees or groin and would prevent any trading of blows. He would then follow up with a modified version of Wing Chun's straight blast - a series of straight vertical punches rolling down the opponent's centerline. This happened so quickly the opponent ended up flapping his arms and backpedaling furiously, sometimes on one leg. Bruce jokingly used to refer to the helpless recipient of the powerful straight blast as a “wounded crane.”

Paul Vunak When a person is on the receiving end of a straight blast, one thing is certain: He has no base and no balance, which are two mandatory factors for any style to be effective. The art of Wing Chun was developed by a woman, no doubt smaller and notas strong as her male counterparts. The underlying premise of using Wing Chun is that you are fighting a bigger, stronger opponent. Trading kicks and punches is clearly not the ideal strategy. The best way to mitigate the size differential is to apply forward pressure to get your opponent backpedaling. Picture taking a worldwide tour to find the best representative of each and every martial art style. Imagine finding the best Tae Kwon Do person, the best Kenpo Karate practitioner, or the best kung-fu sifu, for example. Each individual has a style of fighting and each possesses his respective attributes. Now, picture these people running backward, frantically trying to stay upright and getting out of the way of fists flying at their faces. Can you then imagine these people trying to pull off their techniques? It is an immutable principle that is not affected by style or skill level: Once someone is running backward, he is transformed from a martial artist into a simple pedestrian! It's safe to say that no one practices his art while running backward; however, before you start a new "backward training" program, remember that it's not the reversed direction, but rather the lack of base and balance, that renders the straight blast recipient ineffective. It's ironic that most people's perception of how Bruce Lee fought has undoubtedly been fostered by his movies. On film, his theatrical Jeet Kune Do was incredibly fun, fancy, and highly entertaining; in reality, Bruce's movement was simple, economical, and direct. Dan lnosanto has said, "Every fight that I have ever seen Bruce in when he was serious, he would straight blast."

Paul Vunak After Bruce died in 1973, the responsibility of keeping JKD alive and growing (never static) was conferred upon Dan. Although we read in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do about the effectiveness of headbutts, knees, and elbows, the truth is that all of Bruce's fights ended right after the straight blast! Because of his superior attributes, he could execute the blast so flawlessly that he never needed to follow up with an elbow or a knee strike. Obviously, there are few others in this world who possess similar abilities; most of us need everything that Bruce and Dan discovered! As Dan grew in his pursuit of the Filipino martial arts, he discovered how incredibly functional and destructive, and how natural it was to finish off the straight blast with a barrage of elbows, headbutts, and knees. With the addition of these tools to the JKD cocktail, Bruce's already super effective art became even better.

AN OVERVIEW I have broken down a fight into three phases, each of equal importance. I will explain what each phase is, and the methods for implementing each phase's tactics. First, we have to enter. If we do not enter in a streetlight, we cannot get into the most lethal range to terminate the fight - where we can use our headbutts, knees and elbows. Everything starts from the entry. Most martial artists kick and punch or grapple. When they're in long range they're going to be throwing bombs at us. We absolutely don't want to trade bombs with people; it will not work, especially if our opponent is larger and stronger. It doesn't matter what style he practices - hard style, soft style, circular, linear - we cannot trade bombs. To enter, we have to either intercept or destroy. An interception and a destruction have one thing in common: inflicting instantaneous pain. Once our opponent has been subjected to the pain of an interception or destruction, we then go into pressure. Pressure is possibly the most important facet of our game plan. The pressure comes from the art of Wing Chun and borrows from a technique called the Jik Chun Choy, or straight blast. One of Bruce Lee's biggest revelations was that once your opponent is running backward, he has lost all ability to hurt you. Now that our opponent feels this incredible pressure (the 50-yard dash down his centerline), it is time to terminate the fight. This is accomplished by using the three most barbaric tools on the human body: the knees, the elbows, and the headbutt, which will instantly render an attacker useless. Now that you have an overview of the whole game plan, let's look at each phase in greater detail.

Paul Vunak PHASE1: ENTRY Although there are thousands of martial art styles, all fight within the confines of four ranges: kicking, punching, trapping, and grappling. Bruce Lee and Dan lnosanto discovered back in the 1960s that 99.9 percent of all martial artists fought well in the kicking, punching, and grappling ranges. Very few, however, knew how to fight in trapping range. Our first goal, therefore, is to enter past kicking and punching range, and get into the range, which is probably totally unfamiliar to our opponent – trapping range. At this range we are close enough to the opponent to be out of danger from most kicks and punches, and we're close enough to use our most destructive tools (elbows, knees, and headbutts). Of course, it's highly unlikely that our opponent will let us just "walk in" and start trapping, so the entry - the way we choose to get into trapping range - is important. There are many techniques that make it possible to enter: blocking, ducking, slipping, bobbing, weaving, parrying, for example. The problem is that all these "entries" are passive. You may be able to sneak into trapping range this way, but your opponent will undoubtedly be aware that you're coming and get back out; or worse, he'll be able to catch you with a left hook.

His preferred method of entry was an interception, which inflicted pain even before his attacker could finish launching a blow. Two examples of an interception would be a finger jab to the eyes or a kick to the groin, executed while the attacker is still in motion. Interceptions are most easily pulled off against an opponent who telegraphs his motions (e.g. a wild "haymaker" swing). They can be difficult against a trained fighter, however; for this reason, we also use destructions as entries. The concept of destructions (which come from the Filipino art of Kali) involves attacking the limb that is attacking you. Treat the attack as a target, not a weapon.

The straight blast turns martial artists into pedestrians! Everybody looks the same when he is running backward. He has no base, no form, and no balance. The straight blast renders any art impotent.

Remember: if we do not straight blast an opponent, he'll have his balance - and we'll be in a fight! But you can't just arbitrarily come in, roll your fists and try to straight blast somebody in a fight. You have to first enter with the interception or destruction. Why? Because we need to cause pain first - we then borrow that moment when our opponent is in pain to climb down his centerline with the blast. He is not primed for the big blast.

PHASE 3: TERMINATION As previously mentioned, terminating a fight involves three basic tools - the knees, elbows, and headbutts. Simply put, these are the most barbaric and effective tools for quickly ending an altercation. But while you are applying these tools, you must be clinching onto the back of your opponent's neck (much like a Thai boxer). From this position you not only can launch your knees, headbutts, and elbows with maximum power and economy of motion, but you can also ensure that your opponent is trapped right where you want him to be! One other advantage of the neck clinch is that it's a simple matter to rake the opponent's eyes with your thumbs and then return to this position without wasting any time or effort. When you hold your opponent with a firm grip on his neck, he cannot get back outside to kickboxing range. Nor can he take you to the ground, provided you keep your elbows in centerline and keep up the barrage of headbutts, knees and elbows. Our opponent is now destined to finish the fight in our range - trapping range.

THE MACHETE Outside of its typical agriculture use, in my opinion the MACHETE is one of the most versatile tools on the planet. Cutting, chipping wood, and clearing a path through brush, the Machete can also be used to fabricate shelter as well as its utilization in hunting live game. Locals in Hawaii use it for cutting pineapples, coconuts, and sugar canes amongst other things; and if you really know what you are doing, you can even turn your Machete into another tool similar to a spear. For decades, the Machete has been used as a weapon. With its many styles and versions of broadness and length from countries around the globe there is no wonder the machete is the go-to tool.

he ability to use a Machete for agriculture use and then be able to utilize it as a weapon in an instant is truly extraordinary. You can find the Machete carried by locals on a daily basis in countries such as the Philippines, all of South America, Africa and back. On one of my visits to Hawaii, I was fortunate to be introduced by Victor Tapaoan to Master instructor Carlton Kramer of General Ablens’s school of Derobio Escrima. I was so impressed walking into their training camp during their session witnessing students training with live bladed Machetes clashing with such intent, sparking up the twilight’s beautiful background of Hawaii’s natural forest. It was truly awesome and sharing our Ilustrisimo bladed techniques with this well trained group was a treat and very much an honor.

Training with the MACHETE When it comes to training in the bladed art, it is more advisable to use dulled edges to keep from receiving life threatening cuts. It takes hours and hours of practice just to begin to feel comfortable wielding a live blade. Before using a live blade, a training blade and, of course, dedication to repetition is necessary if you want to succeed to the highest level of one’s skill set. It does not matter what skill you are trying to achieve; repetition is key. My Instructor and mentor Edgar G. Sulite’s montra is “The mother of all skills is repetition, repetition, repetition! During our training we use various types of training blades from wood, hard plastic, rubber, aluminum and polymer. However, my personal favorite is using an actual 18 to 22 inch blade Machete custom ground to fit my training needs. To minimize injuries, always remember to use protection such as eye goggles, gloves, forearm guards and headgear.

In this DVD, Master Giuseppe Vuovolo, from the non-profit association "Knights of Honor and Humility" (associazione "Cavalieri d'Onore e Umiltà") founded by himself, will introduce us to a little-known world: that of the so-called Popular Arts of the Italian tradition, more precisely those of southern Italy (Manfredonia, Puglia). 2nd PART … Spikey, the manual… When buying any item, it's always accompanied by a package leaflet with instructions for use. Its purpose to enable the new buyer to benefit at a 100% of the possibilities of employ. As usual, there are various opinions on the subject. There are supporters who will only find in the leaflet an additional paper to loiter or put in recycling. Another category of users will s e e a d e f i n i t e u t i l i t y, t h a t o f n o t compromising a quality use, but also of not damaging the object in question. The manual also has another role, that of discharging the creator and the seller of any lawsuits that could result from improper handling or use. In any case, the leaflet is essential and unavoidable. The client should automatically request it if it doesn't accompany the object. As you well understood, the Spikey leaflet of course exists, but that's not all. As you will remember, in our first chapter we had already

Sapir Tal's target audience, as you have well understood, is female people. In a violent assault by a man, what could a woman do with a Spikey in her hands and, furthermore, when she didn’t practice any self-defense system? The answer was, almost nothing! In fact, learning to defend yourself requires physical, mental and sometimes more preparation. “We don't learn a complete self-defense system in 8 courses.” The research has focused on the creation of a relatively short training in time. When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.

Bugei Budo International interviews Budo International: It's been quite a few years since Shidoshi Jordan Augusto published his first article in our Budo International magazine in 2006. Today, fifteen years later, we bring you this interesting and revealing interview. Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: In many of your daily articles, we get the impression that you're asserting that we live in a different and complicated time for Martial Arts. In your opinion, to what extent is this happening? I don't think it's only in Martial Arts. If we observe well, since the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, the world has experienced a new measure of coexistence and, consequently, adaptation. It was the great technological development period that began in England in the second half of the 18th century, and spread throughout the world, causing great transformations. It ensured the emergence of industry and consolidated the process of formation of capitalism.

Bugei It was inevitable that this, from its beginning, didn't affect the human being as a whole. Martial Arts are only a part of this whole. We must think that changes always happen out of needs. Necessity is the mother of progress. There was no point in thinking that, in the face of changes, social changes, Martial Arts, which are maintained by people, were going to be immune to these changes. When the center changes, the periphery is affected and tends to adapt. And vice versa! On the other hand, we live in a time when capitalism is at its best. Overnight everything changed, the labor market became a "jungle" in which, in the eyes of "YouTube" and social media, everything is business. They are all sellers, survivors. Everything is floating! The modern world has brought us other realities of balance. Think, for example, that in the present times, the contemporary order is fluctuating; and, at the individual level, it depends on the constant attention and effort of each one. The eternal everyday war, stresses needs different from those known to our parents, grandparents, ancestors. The idea of progress was transferred from the idea of shared improvement to that of individual survival. Each one seeks his own way to build his own world. Amid "YouTube", Facebook, social networks, etc., the idea of growth that one lives today is no longer thought starting from the context of a desire to race forward, but in connection with the desperate effort to stay in the race. B.I.: Are you now in a new phase, finishing the construction of a new school?

Bugei Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: That was an old project. These last few years have been of an intense and hard work. One of the main characteristics of personal maturation is the possibility of choosing to modify one’s own destiny, and, if possible, from a lucid point of view. In my case, I needed to reorganize, restructure my ideas, my thoughts, my projects.... And for that, I first had to match the previous years. Every new project needs time to mature. I always think that all "things" must have a meaning. That is, in other words, to seek in the deep and distant causes the roots of their present state, reassessing the positive and negative of each experience, and, with peace of mind, to prepare their realization. B.I.: Anything different in this new school? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: No. The beauty of this new project lies in the very

For years I have tried to escape Utopia, which can become a strange "burden" if measured by orthodox norms. The classical utopias promised "belonging" to some great family, school, art... In these modern times, unlike the utopias of yesteryear, this thought offers no meaning to life, either with true or illusory contents. In order to function, a school must have content and depth, not just a technical background. On the other hand, our modern daily life is different. The trend is that there are clients and not

students. Pandemic made us swallow our fragility; it made us see that life today has new patterns of weights and measures. Nobody wants to spend ten, twenty years to graduate. Anything, be it an art, a school, whatever it is that’s grown up in this last year, has had its period of adjustment. The modern world, hasty and skeptical, does not imagine the presence of the imponderable in the midst of the most common things of daily life. When we prepare for the achievement of any goal, there is, on the one hand, our need or desire, and on the other, an instinctive or rational plan, which tends to achieve satisfaction. B.I.: And what is your main objective? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: Certainly, growing old in peace. It can be part of an ocean of uncertainties that

surrounds us. The point is that, in the face of this moder n world, we are still rediscovering ourselves as people, as part of a technological mechanism that is advancing more and more. While having a pre-established objective, it should be kept within standards so that it is retained as a pattern. And what pattern remains today? For that reason, adaptation can be one of the survival tools. The defining characteristic of this new time is to "deconstruct," "demystify" and, ultimately, discredit the values of dominant life and its time strategies, demonstrating that, contrary to current beliefs, instead of securing a society or higher life, they are an obstacle in the way for both. B.I.: We know you have many new projects and a lot of work, can you find peace with so many activities? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: In fact, we are never really sure. The realization of any project puts us at the mercy of the way events happen. The only thing we can try is

Shaolin Origin of Shaolin Qi Gong To talk about the origin of Shaolin Qi Gong we have to trace back to the arrival of Bodhidharma in China. Bodhidharma arrived in China from India around 520 to 527 A.D. and met with Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty.

Shaolin “When we train Qi gong, don't we look within ourselves? I know it's not an easy task, it takes time, knowledge of oneself and management of emotions, but once we are tuned with our interior everything flows.”

Although the emperor was a fervent supporter of Buddhism, he reached no agreement with Bodhidharma, who mar ched acr oss the Yangze River settling on a mountain very close to Shaolin Temple. There he is said to have meditated for nine years (he developed a method of teaching or a way of conveying his wisdom) and to have taught his new doctrine to several disciples, including Huike, who was the most famous. Bodhidharma's teachings were based on personal pursuit, away from statue worshiping. He maintained that the sutras (discourses given by Buddha or some of his closest disciples) were impor tant in terms of fostering a Buddhist foundation, but he was against constant recitation of them, so he emphasized sitting meditation in front of the wall, as a method of selfrealization and spiritual search.

s for the possible origin of Qi gong, it is said that Bodhidharma observed that the monks, who spent so many hours sitting in meditation, reflected a series of ailments caused by lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyle. This observation led him to develop a series of exercises to strengthen the body, correct posture and restore vitality to the monks. One of the theories held by various researchers in the history of Bodhidharma suggests that these exercises probably came from Indian yoga and had nothing to do with the martial part, which is often mentioned or attributed to Damo (name by which Bodhidharma was also known), but quite the opposite. Anyway, it's considered that it was the beginning of

"something" within the Shaolin Temple and its surroundings. We have to remember that martial arts already existed and therefore possibly were already practiced in the Shaolin region, but not as an integrated method of monastic practice, surely that came later, and at the beginning they simply used these exercises to strengthen the body and free the mind and the spirit. Two exercises attributed to Damo (Bodhidharma) are Xi Sui Jing and Yi Jin Jing, the first known as "marrow washing" and the second as "strengthening muscles and tendons". Both exercises complement each other and are widely practiced today, especially the Yi Jin Jing. The main theory is that both exercises were developed and designed so that meditating monks could develop a

strong body, which would allow them to meditate for long hours without feeling lethargic. Later, in monastic practice, other daily chores or tasks were introduced that helped the monks to be more active. As we can see in Shaolin today, the union of physical exercise and meditation are inseparable, so much so that one cannot be conceived without the other. In fact, the concept of Qi cultivation is present not only in the area of Qi gong itself, but also in the area of Martial Arts, Zen, Medicine and the Tea Ceremony among other disciplines. Below I detail at what point chan (Zen) and Qi gong come together.

The union of Chan and Shaolin Qi gong The practice of Chan (Zen) is that through the daily tasks can we find ourselves or see ourselves reflected by them. We can divide that reflection into internal and external. The first seeks to observe our interior, our inner nature, while the second seeks to observe the world around us, including other people. Through this practice we seek an absolute knowledge and control of our own self, removing negative emotions from our heart in order to achieve a calm and clear mind necessary for the practice of meditation or Qi gong (keep in mind that Qi gong is also considered as a way to meditate and connect with Heaven and Earth). When we train Qi gong, don't we look within ourselves? I know it's not an easy task, it takes time, knowledge of oneself and management of emotions, but once we are tuned with our interior everything flows. We can consider both (meditation and Qi gong, Zen and Qi) as a means to a common result or as tools to find ourselves, know ourselves from within; if there is peace within us, that peace will hardly be altered by negative events from the outside. But how is it that in our developed nations with more millionaires and billionaires than ever in history, having all our comforts and necessities of life fulfilled, without any bloodthirsty genocidal enemies, with less disease and increased longevity of life, consumerism at its zenith with trash loads of unnecessary material abundance, that we still suffer and have created a new invisible enemy of social injustice.

However, this is not their conclusion, but rather that it’s only a natural evolutionary process of natural selection where the weak is illuminated for the continuation of the species. Therefore, there is no good or evil; pain and suffering is neither good nor bad, it’s just nature so we just have to deal with it. So, if this is true and you carry this thought to conclusion, then there should be no complaints about suffering and if you suffer you deserve it because you are weak. And in fact, this is what the few who possess the majority of the wealth and power of the world actually think. It is for these reasons and much more as I will affirm that we must move away from only increasing our own selfesteem as well as within our children to enhancing selfempowerment. To love oneself no matter what, no matter how poorly you perform at school, at work, or how often you lose, that you’re still a great person and you should love the way you are, although it is self-preserving and you might feel good about yourself momentarily, it does nothing in the real external world to improve your living.

The theory is that if one feels good about oneself and has a healthy self-image, that it would promote them to try new different things illustrated by such idioms like “the secret of getting ahead is getting started” or “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Although that may be true in part and of course you must begin if you are ever to succeed at anything, however, the fact remains that no one succeeds at anything until they complete or finish the task. The mere definition of success demands it to be so; it is defined as a “prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors,” the key word being “termination,” bringing to completion. So, although they might start on many things, it requires perseverance and fortitude to finish or complete anything, which most people who have much self-esteem with an over-inflated ego, lack. Hence, they are left with many unfinished, unfulfilled, simply stated “failures.” And no matter how much you sugar coat it and praise them or yourself for trying, the truth is that they, you failed and that will always remain as such. Furthermore, the idea that a person who has high selfesteem will try many new things, getting out of their comfort zone is in fact not true. It’s actually the inverse. They are so much concerned on sustaining their own selfimage and are terrified to fail, damaging their reputation and hurting their fragile egos, which makes them take comfort in only the things that they know well. someone who is horrible at something but in their own minds, they think that they are fantastic? Being of Korean culture, many nights out would end up at a “karaoke”. And yes, I have witnessed many great singers who I admire as I am actually pretty bad, but I also have endured and suffered through many who were horrible, including me. Of course, we are not judgmental and encourage people to sing as most are shy to do so as I am as well, and understandably they are not so good. But sometimes you get a person who is the one that cries out to go to a karaoke, professing how great they are, then when they actually sing, it’s just awful and the worst part is that they think they are great and continue to hog the mike. This is why the martial arts is a great way to reveal the truth. We get a lot of people who talk a lot and say how great they are, but when they start moving or better yet, spar, you know exactly how they are and either they will be humble or be humiliated. And suddenly, they become quiet. You cannot succeed with self-esteem alone, but it must be accompanied with real skills and that cannot be begotten without hard work and

Hwa Rang Do enduring, overcoming much harsh criticisms first by the self and then others! “Do or do not, there is no try” Yoda Like the idea of self-esteem, on the surface getting started and trying seems grand, good, and feels right, but succeeding is far more complicated than just starting something and trying. But, if you had memes or books that said the truth with things like “to succeed is hard work and the work never stops, so you probably can’t do it,” or “the only way to succeed is to finish and even then, it’s not guaranteed,” or “even if you succeed, it won’t guarantee you happiness”, then it would never go viral or sell very many books. This is prevalent in all things within our society, feeling good sells, feeling bad doesn’t. That’s chaos marketing – to hook you emotionally and then keep you dependent with the feelings of inadequacy if you don’t have it. It’s all emotional and not rational. Rational doesn’t sell, is hard to control, and does not create dependency but rather independence and freedom. And no one can profit from that except for the individual. We even self-govern ourselves, not with a rational mind, but with the irrational emotions and feelings. Furthermore, look at all the romantic movies, they all end with “lived happily ever after,” leaving you with unrealistic expectations. It doesn’t show you what happens after they get married, after they have many kids, exhausted and frustrated they fight over the kids, lose their jobs, fight over marital and financial problems, stress in sending kids off to college, finally being alone with each other after so many years they have lost connection, fell out of love, divorce, fight over custody for children and property, losing huge part of their assets to attorney costs, reentering the dating scene, hooking up with another person in desperation, and then repeating the whole thing all over again. Surely, you couldn’t sell too many tickets to that. Yes, there are some couples that make it, but they are becoming far and few. And once again, it requires, perseverance, endurance, self-sacrifice, and to value others over the self. Furthermore, it must be sacred! Will continue next month

Solving the riddles of Muay Boran Many times my students ask me why they have to learn so many names in a distant and complex language like Thai. Indeed for those who begin to learn Muay Boran one of the characteristics of this Art which apparently represents an obstacle to overcome is the language barrier. But couldn't we avoid using traditional names that are so complicated and often incomprehensible to define fighting techniques? We’d better not, actually. The reason for this is that in all Muay Thai Boran styles traditional names play a fundamental role in a deep understanding of the inner meaning of every martial maneuver of that style. In fact, it is very interesting to observe how the accurate analysis of an ancient fighting style like Muay Thai Boran, as well as providing extremely useful technical tools may offer a glimpse of the traditional customs of Thai people, the creators of this original martial art. The serious study of cultural traditions represents the last frontier in learning ancient martial arts that apparently have no more secrets for modern students, in the Internet era. If you really want to understand the Siamese fighting style, you must tr y to think like a Thai; learning true Thai traditions is the best way to understand Thai mentality and as a consequence to solve the riddles of Muay.

ncient Muay Thai Boran techniques draw on mainly from 3 sources, as far as their names are concerned. These sources are as follows. 1. The myths of Ramakien. The Ramakien is the thai version of the original Indian epic Ramayana, written more than 2000 years ago by the poet and scholar Valmiki. The long narrative poem tells the story of divine prince Rama (Phra Ram in the Thai version) who struggles to free his wife Sida who has been abducted by the evil demon king Ravana (Totsakan in Thai). In his fight against the giant demon, Phra Ram is helped by Hanuman, the white monkey, son of the god of winds Phra Pai, that becomes the general of the army of apes that eventually helps him in his victorious war against the evil Totsakan. The fight of good against evil is the universal theme of this piece of art. The Thai version of the Indian epic was commissioned and supervised by the first king of the current Chakri dynasty, Phra Phuttayotfa, known as Rama I. This version was twice the length of the original Ramayana and to a close review, it offers a glimpse on many aspects of Thai culture. History, art, religion, social life, language and even a detailed analysis of the country’s wildlife are admirably presented to all careful readers of this ancient text. The popularity of Ramakien among present day Thai people is still undisputed: this artistic work is uniquely Thai and represents the true national epic of the kingdom of Thailand. 2. the crocodile, Ling the monkey, Kwang the deer. Also, many a names were inspired by the mythical creatures (Erawan, Hanuman, Naka, Hongsa ) whose undertakings can be found in the classical Hindu and Buddhist poems and legends. As if this were not enough, however, comparing the different regional styles created in various eras in particular areas of Thailand, discrepancies emerge between the denomination and the applications of several techniques or

Mai Muay. To be more clear: the same traditional name may correspond to different combat maneuvers which, at first glance, have no element in common. In some cases under the same name defensive maneuvers, holds and throws, joint locks or strangles are defined. There is enough to confuse the most enthusiastic researchers. This is the case of a famous Mai Muay Boran named Khun Yak Jab Ling. In the standard application, this technique represents a compendium of various defensive strategies:

the defender blocks, deflects, avoids a series of punches, kicks, elbow and knee strikes, always keeping on the defensive (images 1-5). On the contrary, in the regional style of central Thailand, the ancient Muay Lopburi the same name corresponds to a hard throw performed by grabbing the attacker's neck and yanking him backwards. However, should the executor of Khun Yak Jab Ling be a Southern Thailand’s Muay Chaiya stylist, he would apply the technique carrying out a deadly front strangle, the so-called guillotine (images 6-8). But then, how can the riddle of these differences be solved? The first step consists in decoding the original name of the technique: Khun (the lord) Yak (of the demons) Jab or Chap (grabs) Ling (the monkey). The situation described is a clear reference to the aforementioned Ramakien epic. The Demon Lord is probably Totsakan while the monkey is one of the members of the army led by the mythical Hanuman. The two opponents obviously fight differently: the smaller and more agile monkey uses its speed so as not to get caught (or hit). The giant demon, stronger but slower, chases the monkey trying to grab it in order to assert its superior strength. At this point, to complete the reconstruction, one must take turns identifying with the monkey or the demon. In the first case (as shown in the standard version of Khun Yak Jub Ling) it is our defensive ability that can make us prevail: avoid, deflect, block attacks until the moment is right to apply a fast counterattack aimed at a vital point. With this strategy the weaker but agile and skillful fighter can defeat the giant who attacks him. In the second case, we are faced with a faster and more elusive opponent; the winning strategy is to pursue the agile enemy until a control and a finishing technique strength (a joint lock, a choke or a throw) can be applied. In this instance, our superior strenght is the key to victory. The versions of Muay Lopburi and Muay Chaiya “put us in the shoes” of the giant who applies his power to overwhelm his opponent. Such richness of technical nuances cannot be appreciated without a sound knowledge of the cultural traditions of Thai people. For this reason, in Muay Boran IMBA’s courses a part of the teaching is dedicated to the study of the ancestral origins and meaning of the names of each Mai Muay Boran technique. Only through this analysis can we hope to solve the riddles of a wonderful and complex art like traditional Muay, managing to fully appreciate it.

In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. Sifu Vincent Lyn is the heir of a style with deep roots in the history of Kung Fu: the Ling Gar Kung Fu, an art which combines internal and external principles. Sifu Lyn is a man of great talents: besides being and expert master of Martial Arts and Oriental Medicine, in addition he is also an exceptional musician, a sportsman and an actor. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula.
