Master Daniel Guijarro presents for the first time and with the blessing of his own, the ancient tradition of knife fencing, the Cachaba and gypsy rod and gypsy fight of the Churi Romá School, from the lineage of the fencing of the Paulos, from the San Juan Montoya family in Ferrol, Galicia. This family fencing, inherited from the work of the "Barateros" and the bandits and whose first records date back to 1425, was kept secret, remaining as an exclusive practice and teaching only within the families themselves. In this first introductory work we show the 3 forms of fighting, or School Fencing: "Cachaba, La Vara" stick - cane, "Esgrima Cuchillo"knife- and "Puño Limpio"- empty hands. The Cachaba and Vara Gitana has always been considered an art of honor and traditional righteousness. It is a direct, fast, very short, forceful and effective fencing, with 15 codified movements. In La Churi, the knife in Romani, the goal is always to seriously injure the opponent, all attacks are direct, cuts or thrusts made to vital points. It is also known in our tradition a system of empty hand defense, a gypsy pugilism, with significant differences with respect to traditional boxing, that you can discover. The brave Aragon, the industrious Catalonia, the Moorish Al Andalus, and that breakwater of all of them which is traditional Madrid... “Spain is different!” It was the publicity of the sixties; lots of much more intelligent people than me have tried to clear the restless soul of a people and a culture that in many ways changed the world. Ortega, Unamuno, Salvador de Madariaga, Antonio Machado, to name but a few, plunged into the indescribable soul of Spain and the Spanish, leaving us in the end as many doubts as certainties. I feel like a citizen of the world. Born in Argentina to a father of Italian descent, and a mother, born in Portugal of Spanish descent, I have never felt concerned with the ideas of "homelands" as an exclusive concept. The Tucci and the Romero that dwell in me, as the Calvo or the Salvi, the Beruet or the Ferrero, have provided me (as the fact of having traveled and lived in Brazil, Portugal and Argentina) a sufficiently versatile spirit as to discover the beauty inherent in the peculiar, without the need to oppose anything. Latin, which I studied for seven years, gave me the basis to structure my thinking and approach other languages with the notion of what a culture so rich as organized means, and as a result of all this, I was able to love Italy and the Italian, Paris and its revolution, Germany and its order and even Japan with its other look. With this background and experiences no one can think or accuse me of partisanship when looking at Spain, even

though it has been my host country for more than half of my life. I’m Spanish, I served in its army in Africa! But I am also Italian, Portuguese, Argentine and Brazilian, as well as, of course, American by vocation, because all of my generation knew where modern Rome was, a country that has always treated me well and to which I profess sincere affection. From this watchtower, for the first time, I want to gloss for you some aspects of this wonderful country, its history and culture, which has been the root and origin of many Martial Arts, lost in the past and now rediscovered, sometimes far away, as is the case of the Philippine Kali. The hand of this traveling and conquering nation has been long throughout history, and many were its fantastic contradictions that made a mystery out of it, loved and hated to the same extent, over the centuries. And somehow I do it also because I am sick tired of hearing nonsense and seeing the constant intends of reducing to trifles and platitudes the Spanish spirit and the Spanish Nation itself, as such, the oldest of Europe. Spanish world is as rich as the country’s geographical and climatic characteristics are varied. In few places on the planet you can move from the desert to the most fruitful gardens in less than 100 kilometers; from snowy summits to subtropical beaches at about 50 kilometers, or from the Extremadura pastures to the oldest peaks created on the Hercinic orogeny materials of the Sierra de Gredos. Such a variety of microclimates and orography allowed, fostered and concretized the perfect space for that diversity that enriches through difference, the set that makes up that concept as abstract as juridical, which we call nation.

A melting pot of cultures, even today more languages and dialects are spoken in the Iberian Peninsula in less space than anywhere else in Europe. The gastronomy, the culture, the customs and particularities of each region, even of each county, are therefore so diverse, that it would take more than one life to know them all. For an American, for example, such a variety is almost impossible to digest within the framework of his usual world view. In the United States, one can change cities without practically noticing any difference; same customs, same shops, same commercial chains, can be found in 99 percent of the country. Except for a few places of a remarkable own idiosyncrasy, such as New Orleans, with its French heritage, or Florida with its Hispanic accent (NOT Latin! The term Latin refers to all the European countries of Latin roots: Italy, France, Portugal, Spain, etc.), and, of course, the city of cities, the wonderful "Big Apple", the rest of the country share and practice customs, festivities and a daily life so similar that it's not easy to distinguish one from the other. This magnificent homogeneity is positive in the sense of a powerful nation, which gives this country extraordinary strength and identity. Instead, Spain's been sailing for more than five centuries in a sea of doubts, of which its enemies have been taking advantage throughout history. The most obvious evidence of such conspiracy is to be found within the Spanish black legend, created by the English and promoted by any other nation with which Spain has faced in the past. Looking back in its long history, few are the countries that remain outside this category. Spain has been an annoying and powerful nation, so dividing it has always been convenient for most of them. Even today we are still suffering the consequences of that cruel persecution embodied in the historical and hysterical revisionism that is carried out in many Hispanic American countries and which, curiously enough, has caused the raising of more defenders abroad than within Spain itself. Modern Spain unfairly feels the "imperial guilt" of something it actually did far better than other nations, fruit of that black legend and a pessimism bordering on the inferiority complex. The loss of Cuba and the Philippines brought down the remaining shreds of pride still existing, and the '98 generation was shipwrecked in a melancholy which, up to our days, has kept fueling that false discourse of being cursed, fanatical and cruel people. We have seen in Mexico, for example, how Hernán Cortes was treated as a genocidal and accused of having decimated hundreds of thousands of indigenous people, with just 11 horses and less than 500 soldiers! Cortes is probably one of the greatest geniuses in military history,

but it's obvious that without the participation of hundreds of thousands of Tlaxcaltecas and other tribes antagonistic to the Mexicas, such a conquest would have been impossible. It was the crossing of viruses between populations without contact for so many millions of years that made the break; the Spaniards took with them measles and smallpox, and in exchange, they brought syphilis and other stuff from there. Unlike the English in the United States of America, the Spaniards did not decimate the local population; rather, they mixed with it, generating a mixed race in all the places where they settled. In the face of Puritan fanaticism, the Spaniards were more interested in getting out of the misery they came from and sleeping with as many rich Indian women as there were, than in killing people. What’s more, they endowed (as history proves) the locals with rights as new subjects of the Crown, to which both conquerors, and later viceroys, had to be held accountable all the time. The García's, Pizarro's, Cortés' or Lopez Obrador's who live today across the pond and speak in Spanish, are the children of those conquerors they call murderers while pointing their finger at others who, oblivious to that story, keep on living in the mother country, and whose ancestors probably never moved their asses from there. Of course, there are also those who recognize and venerate their heritage with pride and look to Spain with affection and longing. But all these uneducated heroes who, mainly in Mexico, Bolivia or Peru, have fallen into the trap of the anti-Spanish discourse, are but slaves to the ignorance they profess, as well as to the idiotic idea of judging the past with the morality or customs of the present. Moreover, behind all this lies that populism that embraces the whole planet in these times of globalization, from which arises its opposite force: that of provincialism, the result of the loss of identity of people in an increasingly equal world. That need for identification of man within a group (the same that drives hooligans to throw bottles at a stadium), is the pristine impulse that bends those candid souls who seek difference, trying to rewrite history, in order to justify an exclusive discourse which approaches (and often reaches!) similarities to the Hitlerian acclaims in favor of the Aryan race superiority, in their praise of the locals over the “others”. The ancient fencing tradition of Knife, Baton and Gypsy Stick THE CHURI ROMA, CACHABA, VARA GITANA (and GYPSY SCISSORS) FENCING, a Spanish knife art and roma fighting You rarely have the pleasure of presenting an ancient Art that has remained unknown to this day. Since their departure from India, Romani people have preserved their own identity in their long nomadism to finally reach the lands of Spain. As an old friend of mine says, “something must be bothering the rabbit when she's scratching her ear”, i.e., there must be something about it, for it was finally this Spanish land what captivated these eternal nomads, so much so that they decided to settle down in here and become an intrinsic part of our culture and idiosyncrasy ever since. Nevertheless, Romani people have always been reluctant to mingle with the “payos” (tr. “pale people”) or other races, and, as it happened with the Jews all over the world, they managed to keep their own traditions apart from the rest, which allowed them to maintain their nature and authenticity. Arts with deep roots though, this attitude generated a lot of pain and strife to this culture, which, since it couldn't be assimilated, triggered the suspicions of the locals, a scourge that Romani people have had to bear for centuries. This situation was part of the need for secrecy in their combat arts, which, as we shall see, has an ancient origin and has left a long print mark on history. The times we live in are times of mixing, integration and recognition of the peculiarities of cultures, many of them almost extinct. It's the case of the American

Indians, the Japanese Shizen people, and also of the fighting arts of the Gypsy people, who today visit our front page, with the presentation of this video. So Master Guijarro presents here for the first time and with the blessing of his own kind, an art of family tradition and racial imprint, which fits into this new era in which everything hidden is revealed and the old emerges again, to be recognized and to have a new life, otherwise its alternative will be to die in this "wallowing of ducks" that are the times of the postmodern Kali Yuga, this cultural apocalypse in which everything is confused and mixed, the fruit of the internet, media and the new cultural revolution that digital age is assuming. However much the Romani culture has managed to endure all these centuries, the normal thing is that the new generations tend to the integration and the peculiarities inevitably become folklore, to the dismay of the wealth and differentiation that the latter has represented among humans for centuries. With this, as usual, much will be lost if we do not codify it and make it known. Our luck is that we can therefore enjoy a type of knowledge that has been forbidden to others and that this magazine has always valued: American Indians' combat ways, unknown and classic traditions of Italy, Spain and other places on the planet, traditions that have revived in this new cultural paradigm of our day. HISTORY OF THE ROM PEOPLE The well-known Roma people (The Untouchables) left the north and southwest of India 1600 years ago in a single wave, arriving in Europe via the Balkans. A 600-year journey! After leaving India, the Roma arrived in the old continent in the mid-14th century. In that intergenerational journey they crossed Central Asia, the Middle East and the lands of the Caucasus, without barely mixing with indigenous peoples, but lear ning from other cultures elements such as the various forms of selfdefense, as well as the multiple ways of surviving, while maintaining his own idiosyncrasy at every moment. In just a century, they would end up at the extreme ends of Western Europe, England and Spain. They were acclaimed experts in their fencing arts, due to their history, which had taken them through so many countries, forcing them to learn to defend themselves. But self-defense skills had to be a congenital quality of theirs. It is said that, much earlier, Julius Caesar himself had brought them to the Roman Empire in the year 47 BC,

due to their Traditional Stick Fencing Art, and they often participated in the shows and celebrations of the dictator's victories.

FAMILY HISTORY My Learning Journey within the Rom people began in 2007, when I met my wife, Concepción Salazar Montoya; I married her, and we went to Galicia to live with her family, the Montoya Galicia's. There I began a life within their customs laws and family culture of gypsy root. Being Rosendo Salazar Montoya my father-in-law, he integrated me into their customs and traditions, teaching me the Family Fencing of “Los Paulos” lineage, which was already known in the year 1,425, from which the first family records come. From this root became then the already known formulations of “Barateros” and “Bandoleros”, although the Art remained as an exclusive practice and teaching only within the own families themselves and always with a secret treatment. Ours is one of the few families that workout the complete martial discipline, which, in other families, has gradually been lost; with a tradition of more than 1,600 years, this art extends into these disciplines: Their Fencing system, that is, La Churi Roma; the Cachaba; the Gypsy Stick; a Spanish Art of Fighting with Knife or “Roma Fight”, and the GYPSY SCISSORS. My mentor received it as it was tradition, handed down from father to children and son-in-law. He, along with my brothers-inlaw and uncles, taught me for 14 years just as a member of the family that I am, all in the environment and forms of their family root culture.

The Churi (La Churi) is the name with which the knife is known in Romani. Let me highlight below some basic keys in our knife fighting:

The knife is wielded with the right hand and in the way that best suits the right hand; in the left arm is bound the cape, jacket or blanket, or is placed, a net of rods (it can also be used a piece of resistant leather) with which the stabs and lunges are stopped and blocked, and the view of the opposite is covered with the purpose of "playing tricks" with the knife or cheating the position when throwing a thrust or a cut. The combat position is not the same as that used in the jackknife fighting style, because in knife handling, faster, the right hand is placed with the arm and the left leg to the front and side of the opponent. It is also characteristic that the knife does not change hands, except if a cut occurs in the right hand, in which case we would use the knife with the left hand. The goal of this Martial Art is always to seriously injure the adversary, whether throwing the weapon effectively or performing a deadly thrust; there is no juggling in here, rather, all its attacks are direct cuts or lunges made to vital points. With regard to throwing the knife, it's carried out by placing the blade extended on the palm of the hand, handle out, and it's thrown straight to the body of the adversary. As for the GYPSY SCISSORS, the way to handle the scissors in the fight is the same as that of handling the knife we’ve already explained; it just must be added that the scissors are to be grabbed by the center that form their four legs when they are all open; the wound they cause with both ends is characteristic and always lethal. "La Churi Roma or the Art of Knife Fighting" is a Spanish Gypsy Art; its base comes from the traditional Fencing art. The name "La Churi Roma" is currently used and it's the common name assigned to it in the Rom People". And about La Cachaba (Staff) and La Vara Gitana (Gipsy Stick), both styles have their own identity and are very traditional. The Gypsy Knife or the Gypsy Jackknife: As "La Churi Roma", it's practiced in Galicia, Spain, and consists of three fighting forms, or Fencing: "Cachaba, La Vara" (Staff, Stick), "Knife and Scissors

As we have already mention, the tradition of the Gypsy Fencing with Knife and Cachaba / Vara were transmitted orally, practically "from parents to children and sons-inlaw", always in an elitist and secret way. With the blessings of my family, I am the first person allowed to present its practice and teach it out of its original context. This old hermetic teaching has always involved a cultural assimilation: It first implied the learning of the qualities, characteristics and traditions, as the Culture,

Only then you could begin the study of Fencing itself, which generally started out with the apprenticeship of the Cachaba and the Vara and, finally, the Art of the Knife. In this teaching process, the qualities of humility and the sense of honor were always highlighted and considered as essential for the trainee. The family code was always linked to the technical teachings of a discipline, thus based on secrecy, being the reason why which nothing was ever written down. The art of combat had to hide from "non-Roms" and foreigners. Many situations and trials for centuries kept this knowledge secret in such a way that even when long arms remained banned for a long time in Spain, the use of the Staff and the Gypsy Stick, remained a fundamental part in learning the Art of the Gypsy Knife.

Features and history of the STAFF and the GYPSY STICK In our culture, the CACHABA (also spelled CACHAVA) and the VARA, known in our language as MATUKA or RAM, represent prestige and symbolize the very idea of respect. The Staff is a symbol of command and male manhood. They still represent it in Spanish Gypsy families, as a characteristic and part of their family culture and tradition. Every gypsy of a certain age always carries his staff or his stick. The original language has endured over the centuries, although in our teaching we don't usually use it. For example, hitting with the rod in the head was said "diñela con la Ram al Jerol". Hands are called "bastes" and feet "pinreles", etc. Spanish Romani people use the Staff and the stick to strike and defend themselves from ancient times. Its use was already known in 47 B.C., long before their arrival in Europe in the XIV century.

The Cachaba and Vara Gitana have a size of 40 to 60 cm. and they've always been considered an art of honor, of traditional righteousness through personal use. The stick is usually made of reed or extracted from an almond tree rod. The Cachaba, or gypsy staff, usually carries a metal handle known, as a "virola", which has an oval shape, typical of cane handles. The weight and forcefulness of this part of the staff, when rotated at high speed, accelerate the centrifugal force of a blow struck with it, which sometimes is even capable of breaking a motorcycle helmet. That makes the staff a very dangerous weapon that easily can break bones in a single blow. The Cachaba and the Vara Gitana were also used by shepherds, pilgrims, and farmers, as well as by those who looked after the fields outside the walls of medieval cities of the Kingdom of Spain, and, over the centuries, became a powerful weapon of defense against wild animals, bandits and malicious people, thus remaining by culture and tradition, within the Spanish Rom families. The Staff and Gyspsy Stick fencing, be it performed single-handed or with both hands, possesses the same works and movements in regard to the "points" to hit, the same concepts and logics in their application as those of the Spanish Art of

Arts with deep roots Knife Fighting and of "Gypsy Fight", or bare fist boxing. It is a fairly direct, fast, short, forceful and highly effective type of Fencing. Within it, 15 movements have been coded. In its use, fast and short windlasses are performed, and its strength, hardness and flexibility also allow movements that make the Gypsy Stick a very effective self-defense tool, a quick natural response against an aggressor who could carry a Knife or Gypsy Scissors. In our tradition we also have an emptyhanded defense system, a Gypsy pugilism, as well as our Knife and Gypsy Scissors fighting and fencing style. In the latter they usually used the scissors for pruning and cutting the horse manes, animals very tied to the gypsy tradition. With enveloping, direct, lateral, very dynamic and short movements, at middle and short distance, be it thrusting, cutting or hitting (the three fundamental techniques), and being able to combine Fencing, Staff and the Gypsy Stick. When in the Middle Ages King Alfonso prohibited the carrying of weapons, the gypsies relied on their instruments of work such as scissors and the Stick to continue defending themselves. As for its details, the Gypsy Stick usually has a leather cover on the top, sewn or braided. The Gypsy cane can be straight or with a turn on the handle, in which case it's called «Cachaba». The Cachaba and the Gypsy Stick have always been used as an instrument for what we call "playing the stick", but dueling matches are called "kimeras" in romani. Unlike other combat arts, our system remains unusually alive and under the pressure of having, even today, to confront daily real situations, as "kimeras" are still something every day. It's well known that the Gypsy is a warm-blooded people, and although they have their own laws to resolve disputes, fights are frequent and their hallmark. The Importance of CPR in Sports When the topic of “sports” is brought up, the mainstream sports come to mind such as, football, soccer, and basketball. However for myself I immediately think of combat sports such as UFC, wrestling, and boxing. Sports are great pass time, but one of the most important things about sports are the people who ensure the safety of the players. Major league sports have someone who is CPR/ First Aid Certified present in case of emergencies, but in minor leagues like highschool sports and kiddy leagues there's never a guarantee that a person who is CPR/ First Aid certified is present. This is a disaster waiting to happen, coaches should be required to have a CPR/ First Aid certification to ensure the safety of players or anyone in Minor league sports, especially combat sports. High School wrestling is often children’s first experience with combat, coaches should be trained to deal with unexpected emergencies. Not only coches but personnel should be assigned to these little leagues that have CPR/ First Aid certifications, just like there is for Major league sports. Even players should be certified in CPR because not only does it prepare players for the unexpected, but every second counts when it comes to the application of CPR, and if players, coaches, and trainers are certified they can ensure those seconds that will increase another players or persons survival. Why do we often hear comparisons (unflattering but, above all, not very sensible) between Martial Arts and Combat Sports? The answers can be manyfold, probably all summed up in the ancestral need of mankind to classify things or, even more deeply, to compete. Assuming that comparing Martial Arts and CS (Combat Sports ed) is like comparing a racing motorcycle with a cross motorcycle (different purposes and, consequently, different realization), however, there is an important factor that makes this comparison at least helpful; since the real boom of the CS, especially with MMA in the last period, traditional martial arts have revealed all their methodological shortcomings, when compared with much simpler systems but equipped with a combat training methodology.

Honorary titles, certificates, tricks and enlighted man words do not matter when we speak about real combat and, unfortunately, over the years the Martial Arts have been filled with empty words and untouchable traditions, at the expense of a real effectiveness. This has not happened in the CS (at least not so preponderantly or, above all, disabling), this is because in CS there are REGULATIONS and SCORES ... and traditions are totally useless when your opponent regularly KOs you. The fighting ability, at that point, appears clear and self-evident. Over the decades the combat landscape has changed; while before the Martial Arts were the undisputed master, now the "martial" scene has evolved, other systems have appeared on the market and they have been able to have their things to say and gradually establish themselves as effective systems, because they had an empirical way of demonstrating their effectiveness: the RING/CAGE/LEITAI. Thus, an imbalance of the system was created.

As in any biological system, when a change occurs, the components of the system have two options to return to homeostasis; EVOLVE or EXTINGUISH. The CS have taken the first of two paths; they have evolved over time, updating regulations, creating new ones, implementing the quantity and quality of competitions and specializing more and more (attention, not that this last point is necessarily an advantage: greater specialization often corresponds to less resilience), up to lead to MMA; an incredibly effective system capable of coping with almost every combat situation (certainly questionable, but undoubtedly effective). All this excitement, moreover, is still in constant evolution, just look at the experiments of ONE Championship with Muay Thai practiced with 4 ounces gloves instead of 10 or the Juego Todo in the Philippines, in which fighting with bare hands is reconciled with armed combat. Probably the same cannot be said about traditional martial arts.

Many of them, from the top of their throne, have chosen to barricade themselves behind a wall of traditions that is increasingly thick and inviolable, excluding themselves from any type of open competition and remaining anchored to training methods developed by people who had to fight wearing armor, or brandishing sidearms, or galloping (at least unusual situations in this century). Some of them have been smarter than others, finding excellent adaptive solutions, just think about Judo, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, but most of the Chinese martial arts have not been as far-sighted. Most of them have

never updated their training systems, ignoring the fact that in the meantime the world has moved on, movement has become a science and what it was good 20, 50 or 100 years ago today, with all probability is no longer valid. Furthermore (and this demonstrates the systemic idiosyncrasy of certain methods) many traditional Martial Arts Schools do not even remotely include the study of at least realistic combat dynamics, thus altering the idea that a practitioner can make about what real contact is, and all the psycho-physical implications that it entails. This, over the years, has spawned monsters.

What is written deliberately focuses on a single element, namely the comparison between Martial Arts and CS seen from the point of effectiveness in combat. In the first paragraph a motoring comparison is used to outline the principle by which the two disciplines were created with different purposes (or at least they have taken on different ones during their life); understanding this is essential in order not to risk falling into incorrect interpretations or, worse, mixing interpretations that have nothing to do with each other. We also remember that sport combat and real combat for survival are two very different things, and it was more than logical that this would lead to different approaches in the creation of training systems. As always, we must be well aware of the purpose of a thing; the CSs have combat as their purpose. And they were created for it; all the training and training methodology is totally focused on preparing a person to go to fight (with all the physical and mental pros and cons that this entails).

The purposes of the Martial Arts are other and many, INCLUDING that of preparing a person for combat. Every honest teacher should specify this, and should specify that there are parts of the martial arts that do not have combat as their purpose (study of internal energy, grounding, myo-tendon connections, etc.). These parts can, if well trained, be useful in combat but that is not their main purpose, but to provide the practitioner with as detailed an awareness of his body as possible, in order to improve the quality of life. Then, of course, there is the part aimed at fighting; On which, however, there is a note to be made: combat (sportive fighting and street fighting) has its own dynamics, its peculiarities; studying the techniques remains uncertain if these dynamics are not studied. The assessment of distance, timing, movement in space, stress and adrenaline management, as well as resistance to blows received are components that can only be studied by fighting (on the other hand, one cannot learn to speak a language if you only study the alphabet!). A perfectly executed technique in application does not guarantee the same result as the same technique performed in free sparring.

The most functional path, perhaps, lies in unity through duality (Dao - 道); Martial Arts have a lot to learn from their children (because most CSs are none other than Martial Arts children, born from their matrix but with something different), and just as every Father can learn something from his own Son too they can find satisfactory solutions to their shortcomings. Borrowing training methods, types of exercises and stress conditioning can only be of help to traditional martial arts, broadening their points of view and leading them towards a functional innovation, giving them a way to survive better over time. It is enough to remove that veil of untouchability of traditions and instead embrace the train of evolution (without ever forgetting the reason for traditional methods!), which does not pass often, and losing it corresponds, most of the time, to extinction.

My martial arts journey to mental wellbeing

Wing Chun International My Mental Health During my lifetime I have tried cycling, running, Kickboxing, Muay Thai and currently I train and teach Wing Chun. Over the years I have struggled with my fitness, my weight and my self confidence. Using exercise and diet I have managed to yoyo my weight and health but although I have enjoyed conditioning and sparring I never had a burning need to be the best at any sport and I only ever trained to become a better version of myself. Years of Police service unfortunately led to what was originally believed to be work related stress. Throwing myself into training, predictably helped with my fitness and my health but although it was a distraction it was never a cure for the stress. I was later diagnosed with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and Autistic spectrum disorder. My personal experiences with autism though not a contributing factor in the PTSD did prove to be a hindrance in my recovery. The therapies available for PTSD are fantastic, but, as I discovered with my therapist, autism can make life harder when it comes to changing an ingrained mindset. What saved me from spiralling was my discovery of Wing Chun under the tutelage of Master Andrew Cameron and Wing Chun International. My mental health did force me to retire from the police but my martial arts training gave me a distraction from the triggers affecting the PTSD and something with a structure for me to focus my mind on which appeals to my autism. Post retirement I have been able to focus on my journey in training and teaching Wing Chun which keeps me busy, focused, moving forwards and also social. Now I grow every day as a student, instructor, and mentor. More importantly my students grow with me.

I agree this can work wonders for a lot of people, but it is not for everybody. Some people, especially with various mental health issues need to take encouragement from each win they can get.”

FOCUS PTSD. My specific PTSD experiences mean that training and teaching Wing Chun keep my mind busy. Like other anxiety disorders PTSD can be triggered by experiences which remind me of the traumatic experiences but also when the mind is not engaged in other activities intrusive memories can slip in uninvited and become a trigger without external stimuli. AUTISM. Not all forms of autism are equal, but a common trait is the need for routines. Many martial arts have routines already in place as part of their core training. Karate have Kata, Muay Thai have Wai Kru and Wing Chun have forms. Each have their own purpose within their arts but are a fantastic tool not just in the development of the martial art but as a structured routine which may appeal to many people with Autism. This is not to say people with autism can’t enjoy other martial arts or other martial arts cannot adapt to appeal to this autistic trait. Structured drills and exercises, a recognisable structure to the lesson plan and good timekeeping are fantastic ways of keeping a mind like mine on track, focused and happy. You may like to train with music pumping away in the background as you train, we all know that a banging soundtrack can increase our heartrate and motivate students to train with the pace of the music. This may not be the case with Autistic students. You may find that the motivational music is a distraction from the training and hinders the ability to focus. If You have a busy school and you own gym it may be worth trying autism friendly quiet sessions, where training takes place without distracting music and enthusiastic spectators jeering in the background. Many supermarkets and shops are now adopting this policy and have a quiet hour each week. I personally do like to train to music but the right music for the right part of the class is essential: Soothing and calm music whilst doing technical work and pounding music whilst sparring and exercising for example.

Wing Chun International Moving Forward We all like to feel like we are making progress in our lives and the idea that we are labouring in vain or in this case training in vain can not only be demotivating but for many with mental health conditions this can exacerbate a mindset already geared towards selfdeprecation, no matter how much you scream and shout at them to work harder, push through and stop slacking off. This seems like an alien concept to many personal trainers and life coaches who motivate others with a “no pain, no gain” mentality. I agree this can work wonders for a lot of people, but it is not for everybody. Some people, especially with various mental health issues need to take encouragement from each win they can get. Did they get out of bed and come into class today? WIN! Did they engage in class and manage to hit the pads or get out of a headlock? Another WIN! Only praising the elite, fittest and sweatiest students, neglects the reality that some people may be working 10 x harder than anybody just to get up in the morning and care for themselves let alone train something they are not confident with in front of a room full of critical eyes and judgemental head shakers. It may be necessary to push students wanting to compete and encourage a competitive mentality in class to keep students aligned to win whatever competitions that may enter but let us collectively find a way to motivate, all students, prove their growth and encourage engagement for even those who struggle with day-to-day life.

Wing Chun International SMART For anybody who has had to do a personal development review in their workplace you may wince when you hear SMART action plans being brought up but this is a fantastic way to motivate students who don’t want to measure themselves on who they can beat in a fight. For those who haven’t heard of SMART action plans here is a breakdown: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time limited If You have a spectrum of students, judging everybody on the same criteria can be detrimental to those who struggle with mental health. In stead try to measure the student against themselves when you set them goals. Your blackbelt or equivalent may not be achievable for everybody in the same time scale or even at all, but if it is not achievable (in reality or perception) then you will be losing many students who don’t see the point in continuing. Set students specific criteria to meet, to improve. For some this may be black belt by this specific date but for others it may be to attend class and remain for a minimum of 1 hour every week for the next 4 weeks and then reassess their goals. This meets all the SMART criteria and in 4 weeks we can praise what could be a huge landmark for the student. If they do not fulfil it, reassess: did they improve their attendance? In which case reset the goal. Did they not improve? Perhaps shorten the time scale to turn up and remain for 1 hour for 2 consecutive weeks. Either way if we are geared to praise them for the effort they made regardless of the end result rather than criticising the shortcoming. When they do hit the goal, it is a massive win, treat it as such, find a way to reward this. Now we can keep moving the goal posts until they get their first grade as a milestone achievement. In this manner their blackbelt is not such a huge leap of imagination but one of many smaller steps. It’s a bit like building a stairway up a mountain with way points along the route at easy intervals. They may not get to the top as fast or as directly as the elite athletes climbing the rock face, but they know they will get their and it will not seem so daunting a task.

Wing Chun International SOCIAL Some students quite honestly do not care about their grade, don’t want to fight, don’t want to measure themselves against others but just need to do something which is both physical, useful and gets them meeting new people on a regular basis, keeps them in regular contact with the more routine attendees and provides a controlled environment where people must interact with each other without a fear of rejection. This again is a massive service for some people with mental health issues as some will struggle socially. You may use your smart objectives to get students to engage to develop their social confidence or you may, if you have the facility choose to run a class which is geared more for the socially minded rather than competition or have a social facility like a café, coffee bar or even a lounge area for students between classes. If you rent a hall by the hour, provide a social media space for students to keep in touch, share ideas and chat. Personally, I have a social media group available for students, past and present to engage if they choose and I encourage the use of a similar space run between them too, one where I am not involved, where they can ask questions without worrying what their instructor will think or vent without worrying about me seeing their comments. I like to think this isn’t necessary as my students love me and everything I do all the time but then again it’s nice to know you have that space and let’s not forget “OTHER PEOPLE’S OPINION OF ME IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS.” Should we berate social students or complain they do not try hard enough? No of course not. Let’s understand that those social students will again make some progress, whether it is in their grades, their attendance, their understanding, their ability to help others. Our job as instructors is to find out the motivation of students and encourage growth in whatever way we can to keep them motivated and growing at the pace that works for them. Keep students training with each other, mixing with different skillsets, ability levels, motivations etc. You may be surprised

what a pro athlete can learn from somebody struggling with basics.

“It’s lonely at the top, let’s get there together” When every student can grow and pass on their knowledge, they pull other students up to their level faster. In this manner, student’s do not fear another student becoming better than them because if that happens, they know they will benefit from that growth and be pulled up too. What I have seen using this method is that each new intake of students progresses faster than their predecessors and the overall quality of the school improves. This is no different when dealing with Mental health issues. By providing a safe, non judgemental and structured school, those who may have before felt intimidated by a martial arts school or embarrassed to be the beginner now feel that they are valued members of the team who provide value to others and have realistic targets that they can achieve. Gone are the days of being last to be picked for the team in P.E. Students should race to help the inexperienced or struggling student before then testing themselves and their skills under pressure with their peers. If we all pull each other up rather than stepping on each other, we can all share in the glory of reaching the top and still keep good company regardless of our differences. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

SHAOLIN PAO QUAN “The Cannon Fist of Shaolin” As many of you know within the Shaolin Temple and throughout the history of China countless fighting styles developed. Shaolin is considered the epicenter of Chinese martial arts and a must for all lovers of what in the West we know as Kung fu (Gong fu). But within the Shaolin Monastery not only were fighting styles developed but also exercises aimed more at health, in fact historians mention as a starting point and development these exercises that in their time were more similar to yoga than to what we call today Kung fu. However, you have to be realistic and be clear that Martial Arts are much older than the temple itself, basically since people have had the need to defend themselves, whether from other people or wild animals. Then what makes Shaolin so special? Since its foundation, it has played a very important role in the spread of Buddhism, always in connection with the governments in power, thus promoting its growth, development and prosperity throughout its history. Another factor that favored its development in both the political and the martial was its geographical location, established very close to the city of Luoyang that in its time was capital of China and nerve center of political and religious activities.

f something characterizes the Shaolin Temple, it's that capacity to be reborn from its ashes repeatedly at the hands of people truly committed to what they were doing and to tradition, as it’s the case of the last Masters who survived the Cultural Revolution and subsequent periods of instability in Chinese history. Some of them are Shi SuXi, Shi Suyun, Shi De Chan, Yong Xiang, Shi De Gen and Wu Sanlin, among others. These Masters and many more were the ones who rekindled the flame and kept that fire and passion for Martial Arts and Shaolin culture and did their best to keep it going to this day. Many of the styles that have been transmitted to our times are the legacy of these Masters such as Xiao Hong Quan, Da Hong Quan, Luohan Quan, Pao Quan, among others. In this article I have set out to tell you about one of Shaolin’s formerly secret styles called Pao Chui or Pao Quan. Formerly, the Shaolin Pao Quan was known as Shaolin Pao Chui, and it's one of the forms that back in the past was exclusively transmitted behind closed doors from Master to disciple, by this I mean that it was only taught within the Shaolin Temple and to a select group of people. This form is reputed to be the king of empty hand forms, not only because of its visibly powerful movements and techniques, but also because it contains a variety of secret actions, invisible to the eye of the most inexperienced. It's said that its origin comes from the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) and that it evolved from the Duan da (hand-to-hand fighting style) of the 18 families. It's worth remembering that during this dynasty, the Venerable Master Fu

Shaolin Ju invited the best Masters of China to an exchange of techniques in the Shaolin Temple for a period of 3 years. From this exchange routines and techniques were established and, so to speak, many of the characteristics of the Shaolin style were defined, taking the essentials of the 18 families. Pao Quan’s style became popular mainly during the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 1911) dynasties, but it was not until our days that it began to be openly taught. Even each school has its own version, many of them preserving the features of the form. As for its characteristics, the ancients used to say that "Pao Quan is as fierce as a tiger and as an ox when he shakes his body. The sounds that manifest in its practice are like a great storm and its spirit like that of a dragon, majestic and arrogant." Pao Quan includes Da Pao Quan, Xiao Pao Quan, Da Pao Chui, Xiao Pao Chui, San Huang Pao Quan and Wu Hua Pao Quan.

Xiao Pao Quan Xiao Pao Quan is the basic training routine of Pao Quan, the ancients said it was a simplified taolu of Yi Lu Pao Quan. Master Yong Xiang (1913 - 1987) simplified the Pao Quan routine so that his disciples could practice it better,

selected 22 movements plus the opening and closing movements and left 24 movements. When he was teaching his disciples they asked him what was the name of that taolu and Yong Xiang answered Xiao Pao Quan. From then on it began to become popular inside and outside the temple to this day.

Er Lu Xiao Pao Quan It's the most advanced form of Pao Quan Yi Lu and stands out because in the of Buxing, Bufa and Ji Fa phase (fighting technique) is much more complex.

Shaolin Da Pao Chui According to the book Shaolin Quan Pu, the Da Pao Chui belongs to the area of Pao Quan. The Shaolin Da Pao Quan comes from the time when the monk Fuju united the 18 most famous Martial Arts families in the Shaolin Temple during the Song Dynasty. At first it had 28 movements, but during the Qing Dynasty, the monk Zhan Ju developed up to 36 movements

Shaolin without counting the opening and the end. Zhan Jun not only selected the most essential parts of forms of Shaolin: Luohan Shibashou, Luohan Quan, Da Xiao Hong Quan, Tong Bei Quan, etc., but also added his experience in the struggle of 10 years. Through practice, he removed useless movements to leave only the most important and essential ones, thus shaping his own style. As for the fighting technique, its defense is fierce, with many changes, and its blows like those of a big cannon when detonated, for this reason it's called Da Pao Quan. Monks after the Qing dynasty said that this form was taught only behind closed doors.

CHRISTIAN WILMOUTH In 1999, after a long career in martial arts and combat sports, Christian W ilmouth turned to the so-called selfdefense methods. So he joined at recognized academies to train in different disciplines while continuing his investigations during his numerous seminars around the world. For Christian Wilmouth, who at the time was still searching for the elements that today have become the R.E.D TRAINING methodology, the goal was clear. The LETHWEI “ADDICTION” today Burmese boxing has long remained unknown to the public because it was in a way a prisoner of the political context of Burma. Only a few great figures like Dr. Maung Gyi, founder of the ABA (American Bando Association), taking shelter in the United States, made known this martial and combat universe. For some time now, the opening of the borders of this country has accelerated the exchanges between the Burmese practitioners and those from all over the world. This, as usual when there is an "exchange", has technically enriched the practice but also the teaching of the discipline concerned. Over the past two decades, we have seen the contribution of «modern» boxing systems extend its influence in the practice of Lethwei. At the same time, social networks have greatly helped in the resurgence of popularity of Burmese Boxing, and they have put forward great fighters from this country like "Tway Ma Shaung" "Tun Tun Min" "Too Too" or "Soe Lin Oo", as well as some foreigners like “Antonio Faria” or “Cyrus Washington”. Lethwei is now emerging as a discipline of the future among purists and fans of extreme combat. Some Information: The rules of Traditional Lethwei combat today In the tradition of Burmese Boxing, there is no point count to decide between fighters. To win, you have to KO your opponent or force him to give up. In the event of KO of one of the two boxers, the coach can decide to request a "time out" of 2 minutes to recover the fighter and return him to the fight. Boxers fight with their hands bandaged,

without gloves, and have a very wide variety of punches, throws and strike zones not found in most fighting disciplines. At the end of the fight, if the 2 boxers keep standing up, the tie is declared, there is no winner. The bouts take place in 5 rounds of 3 minutes. “We defend the traditional rules that govern fighting in Burmese Boxing, except for the '2 min time out' rule. The fact that there is no point system makes Lethwei what it is today, a committed fighting discipline requiring boxers to constantly move one against the other. Unfortunately, as for many disciplines, some organizations, under the pretexts of “openness” to the greatest number (this hiding of course a purely financial objective) have implemented rules integrating the “point scoring”, thus distorting the very essence of Lethwei. I started learning Martial Arts very young, with my father André Feschet, who practiced Judo and Jiu Jutsu of Master Kawaishi in Grenoble. In 1958 we moved to Sainte Maxime sur Mer. I became one of the first students of the center led by Mr Perreux, the Sainte Maxime Judo Club. From 1960 I took part in many Judo tournaments and also trained Karate in Saint-Tropez. In 1968, I returned to Grenoble where I joined the Dauphinois Judo Club of Master Corbel with Mr. Rivollet and Mr. Monestier as instructors, and then Mr. Herman and Mr. Gaillat. At the same time, I kept practicing Karate with Master Tran Hua Trong. After having distinguished myself in numerous competitions in both practices, I went to the military (6th Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment - 6th RPIMa) where I animated a feet-fist group. At the end of 1974 I left for the USA, where I began to train at JOON Rhee (advice to connoisseurs). The style didn't suit me, so I headed to the Fairfax Kyokushin, a national benchmark, on the advice of a friend. Everything changes! Contact, low kicks, etc., became my world. At the same time, I participated with some friends in many open Karate tournaments (Pro Karate, which will later would become Kick Boxing). In 1977 during a stay in France I opened with a handful of friends (including Gabriel Francoise, who will continue the club after my departure), the first Karate Kick Boxing club in Grenoble,

In 1979, I left for Toronto, Canada, where I boxed professionally in Kick Boxing for the Koryo Academy. I then created, with a group of enthusiasts (Simon, Joe Raic, Néné, etc.), a small club. One day, Joe introduced us to a Burmese refugee, who told us about Lethwei. He initiated us into the Burma martial practices. Impressed, we started working out and integrating some of those techniques, but our practice then, was still far from being pure Lethwei. Continuing my career and alternating bouts and open tournaments, (very popular on the American continent), in 1985, in which I returned to France for family reasons, I met Gabriel and other colleagues and I trained with my friend Christian Khoel, a group of fighters who would become legendary (David Tavares, Michel Vinour, Phillipe Wejieme, Luc Thoulet, Gabriel Zigmond, Jean Pierre Sappei and many others). This group would perform in competitions for many years. The club was then called "Académie des Sports de Combats Grenoble". In 1986 while I was touring in the USA with Davis Tavares and another student, in Washington DC, at Randy Wozin's, I met a Bando expert named Patrick Fineley who was the student of a man named Jonathan Collins (a Bando Master). I asked to meet the master, and he was introduced to us at a lunch in Georgetown. I didn't know Bando in practice, but I knew about their seriousness from having seen them in competition, and I had mostly heard about the rectitude of a great Burmese master called U Maung Gyi.

Jonathan Collins, having been presented to us as a Grand Master of Bando, we organize his coming to France and go to train twice in his academy. While Jonathan Collins sent me in 1987 to the "Nationals" (a competition that brings together the USA top fighters) with a letter of recommendation, at the end of the ceremony, I received my 1st Level black belt from the hands of Grand Master U Maung Gyi. Shortly thereafter, I discovered to my surprise that internal political issues meant that the Collins group was not integrated into the U Maung Gyi group. The latter then

being the benchmark I wanted to follow, so I joined the Gyi system, with Dale Minor as my sponsor, who then gave me the opportunity to train with many legends of feet-fist sports (at the risk to forget someone, I will not name them all, because forgetting one would be a lack of respect). From then on, I had the privilege of being personally trained by U Maung Gyi, with the help of Sayama Mester, Sayaji Minor, Georges, Hogan, Rossiter, Kinney, etc., and these people, made me what I am today. By dint of work and sacrifice, I later became a Sayaji, a "Grand Master"

During this period, at the same time in France, in 1989, I created with the help of Jean Pierre Sappei, Christian Gau and Jean Roger Calliere (who started in Kick Boxing and Bando), Luc Thoulet, Michel Vinour, Philippe Wejieme, Chantal Gerelli, Chantal Alix, and many others, the AEBKB, “European Academy of Bando and Kick Boxing” in Grenoble, which will quickly become one of the best clubs in France. During this period, I made many round trips to the USA to fight and learn under U Maung Gyi. In 1990, during one of my many stays in the USA, the great Master Gyi decided to entrust me with the development of BANDO IN EUROPE, which I accepted!

Some details on the Context of the time: I learned Lethwei boxing with the group Maung GYI. However, given the prohibitions and the time (in France and in Europe), officially we only did Bando Kick Boxing (4 guns, 6 guns, 8 guns), but it was impossible to box in pure Lethwei (9 guns). Then I asked volunteer students of the time to help me structure our practices in order to make them comply with the rules of the different federations. So, with the help of people like Charles Hinojo, Luc Thoulet, Jean Pierre Sappei, J.R. Calliere, Alain Delmas and my sons, Elvis and Sonny, as well as many others, we integrate some Federations, before creating finally, at my express request, our own entity. In 2000, during a stay in the USA, I was promoted 7th level and Grandmaster Gyi asked me to think about a modernization of our whole Boxing system, because there is a lot of enthusiasm for Jiu Jutsu, K 1, "Free Fighting", MMA etc

So I begin with my children and friends to set up the system that we have to date, but the «experiment» we had then launched would be slowed down by wars of denigration from former students, who had all become self-proclaimed “great masters”, not hesitating to go to Myanmar to collect the so-called "one dollar certificate", a degree they obtained with the help of local illustrious strangers. The egos, the very limited behavior, the careerism and mythomania of some, and the different vision of each other meant that in 2005 I'd make the decision of leaving this group that I had created, because it no longer corresponded at all to the vision I had of our practices. Then I continue my work with a small group of "faithful" ones, in order to respect my commitments to U Maung Gyi and work to enrich our disciplines, while waiting to be able to set up a solid development project again. It was in 2013, that Christian Wilmouth, whom I had met in 2005, contacted me and presented his project to me! We then worked like madmen to offer you today a Lethwei made up of 50% tradition and 50% modernity under the LETHWEI "ADDICTION" banner, as well as a BANDO faithful to the fundamental teachings of U Maung Gyi.

Important: I want to point out that at the time, I trained all these «people» only in Kick Boxing, and some in Bando, Jiu Jusu and Kyoku, but nobody in Lethwei except my Children! (This to silence the claims of some today). I would also like to point out that since 1977, I have led hundreds of workshops, that throughout my teaching career I have had thousands of students, and also I've had the chance to demonstrate Bando and Burmese boxing all over the world, including 1988 before the IOC in Geneva. I allowed a very wide audience to access these practices, and that is why I am recognized as the pioneer of Burmese Martial Arts in France and Europe. In this second video of the series, Justo Diéguez, creator of the KFM Keysi Fighting Method, teaches us to systematically implement the tools on which the principles and concepts of the method are based, starting from patterns and basic sequences of defense against middle distance fist attacks. E-Kung Fu now also in German and why that is only the beginning Tim has become, like whole generations before him, a real Kung Fu fan through movies of Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Jet Li etc. As soon as he was old enough to watch those movies, he imitated the movements in front of the TV, dashed through the apartment dressed as a ninja and fought with his friends according to his heroes on screen. His parents did what probably many would do in this case - they looked for a martial arts or combat sports school nearby to channel Tim's energy in a meaningful way. The fact that it is not a Kung Fu school, but a Judo club does not bother Tim much. For him the main thing were martial movements, shouting, a uniform, and successfully reaching the next colored belt. For a long time, Tim's need was more than satisfied by the local club. He even made new friends and persuaded some friends and classmates to join his Judo club. But then came what had to come - it became boring. Apart from the fact that Tim developed other interests as he got older, his will to go to Judo had become less and less. Finally, he stopped altogether. For a while, he didn't care about it anymore. Until one day, when he went with his friends to watch a new, genuine Kung Fu movie in the cinema. The flame of passion was immediately rekindled, as if it had never been gone, and Tim firmly resolved to start again with martial arts. Now a bit older, Tim gave more thought to what exactly he wanted to train and what he wanted from a system. He researched a lot on the internet and informed himself well about who teaches what where and who passes on. After a short time, it became very clear to him - Tim wants to learn Shaolin Hung Gar Kung Fu, the style “passed on by Shaolin”. Allegedly so deep and complex in content that not even a whole human life is enough to learn everything. The bravest and strongest warriors are said to have emerged from this style. THAT'S what I want to learn, Tim thought to himself. Of course, his thoughts immediately led him to China. After all, the martial art comes from there. But like many before him, Tim had to realise that this information is outdated, because for various historical reasons the desired Kung Fu is no longer taught there. Following the line of Kung Fu ancestors, Tim finally ended up back in Europe. More precisely, in Switzerland, with us. But where he lived, in a small town in Germany, there was no school which taught Hung Gar Kung Fu, neither from us, nor any other. Does this story sound familiar? Doesn't it sound like the career of a Kung Fu master which you have already seen once or have you even experienced this yourself? Tim is at a crossroads right now. Regardless of the fact that he has already gained experience as a young boy and knows what a martial art can do for him, he now has to make a compromise. A compromise between what he actually wants and what his possibilities allow.

As a student, he may not be able to afford to move or commute permanently to a larger town "just" to pursue his passion. In my experience, most Tims in this world take the path of lesser resistance and end up enrolling in the next bigger school or club. A scenario that, thanks to our work here in Switzerland, will hopefully soon happen less and less worldwide. I would like to quickly explain how this works. A large part of my team, including myself of course, lives from teaching Kung Fu. This, and the direct lineage up to the Southern Shaolin monastery, has always been a characteristic of the KUNG FU SCHOOL SEWER. That the student can benefit from 100% of the energy of the teacher was always very important to me. Of course, the lockdowns and restrictions imposed all over the world, which have affected us for more than a year now, hit us hard. Here in Switzerland we were suddenly sitting there, ready as ever, but no longer allowed to give actual lessons on site. Of course, we immediately switched to online teaching, in retrospect at record speed. A good decision. And yet many hours were still unused. Out of this situation we started our big project - e-Kung Fu. And before we knew it, we were teaching and spreading all our knowledge and skills via the online training program. Of course, this is much easier to write than it was and is. For we are talking about a martial art that has been handed down for centuries with roots in the South Shaolin monastery. But we kept at it and have reached our first milestone, i.e., all Tims of this world can learn original Shaolin Hung Gar Kung Fu since April 2021, just one click away. The portal already has a lot to offer, but it has only just picked up speed compared to what we are still planning. One of the most important things for the Tims of this world is above all the translation of the program. With our Swiss German we are of course a small island in the sea of languages. But of course, my team and I don't want to stop there. Kon, กล trick; scheme; stratagem. Kae, แก้ to correct; to counteract; to solve a problem. Muay Thai teachers of the past used to divide the skills of fighting in different styles: the most advanced skills were classified as Kon Kae, the tricks used to solve the problems of fighting. In other words, Kon Kae means the skills of counterattack. It represents the greatest Art in Muay Thai, the Art of true champions. Nowadays, most Muay Boran teachers follow the Kon Muay Kae classification made by Master Yod Ruengsa in his Muay Thai textbook titled Tamrap Phra Chao Sua published in 1971. The title is an obvious reference to Ayutthaya king Phra Chao Sua (aka Tiger King) and to the combat style used by his elite soldiers, the Krom Nak Muay. In fact, this Regiment of Muay fighters consisted of highly trained military personnel with a long history of Muay Thai practice. Those extremely skilled soldiers were employed to guarantee the safety of the king and the royal family. The fighting style of those elite troops was called Muay Luang or royal Muay and, according to most sources, it was the originator of the Kon Muay Kae style we still practice today.

The defender shall use every kind of body weapon to defend and counter the opponent’s offensive actions. Grappling maneuvers (locks and throws) are also employed as counter techniques to subdue the opponent with a quick and decisive action. Counter fighting is generally considered a “defensive style”, especially if we compare this strategic approach with the more attack-oriented Chern Muay style. In reality, the true Kon Muay Kae expert is skilled in using the opponent’s offense as a means to successfully complete his own attack. At the highest level, a Kon Kae fighter is able to “make the opponent attack when and where he wants him to do it”. He plans his moves and uses all the defensive tools of Muay (feinting, drawing, sidestepping, guarding, parrying, slipping, ducking, blocking) to put the opponent in a position of weakness where he can easily apply his counter. It is clear that a good counter fighter needs to develop a keen sense of timing in order to retaliate with fast, hard blows at the right time, before the opponent has any chance to recover from his missed attacks. Muay Thai developed through proper training, an innate sense of timing is needed to really excel in this elusive style. However, all Nak Muay (Muay fighters) can benefit from a regular practise of Kon Kae techniques: this style offers a compendium of so many defences and counterattacks that every student can find the ones that better suit his technical and psychological characteristics. This ancestral fighting style is very complex and includes some universal principles of hand to hand combat. Siamese traditions related to barehanded fighting are many and varied: only through an in-depth analysis of the heritage of the most prominent masters of this Art it is possible to dig-out the true essence of Muay. One of the living thai masters who structured his vast knowledge in a clear and logical way,

understandable for foreign students, too, is Master Chaisawat Tienviboon. He analysed the heritage of past masters of Muay with an open spirit and a logical mind. In fact, besides being one of the foremost Khru Muay with more than 50 years of experience in Siamese martial arts, he was also associated professor, Faculty of Engineering at King Mongkut University of Technology. I was very lucky to receive from Master Chaisawat several suggestions and detailed instructions about many aspects of Muay Thai teaching. He also instructed me about the levels of fighting. This concept is closely related to the analysis of counter fighting that I am presenting in this articles.

Muay Thai Master Chaisawat identifies 4 levels of fighting, in Muay The first level corresponds to a street brawl during which the opponents exchange blows without caring about defense. Uncontrolled rage is the dominant feeling that compels the street fighters to charge blindly trying to overpower each other. No blocking or slipping is used and both contestants are focused exclusively on attacking as hard and as fast as possible. Usually, the first one who connects with a telling blow is going to win the fight. This level has clearly nothing to do with martial arts and therefore thai masters compare it to “splashing the opponent with mud”. Level two is much more sophisticated and corresponds to the basic teaching system used in most Muay Thai schools. When a fighter has reached level 2 it means that he can apply the basic defensive strategies to repel his opponent’s offensive and is in condition to retaliate accordingly. The simplest defensive strategies that are used at this level are: Pong, Pad, Pid, Poed. Let’s see the meaning of this 4Thai words. Pong: refers to stopping blows with the palm of the hand. Otherwise, the attacks may be stopped just by raising one’s guard. Pad: parrying the blows with the hand or the forearm. The attack can be diverted towards the interior or exterior line, downwards or upwards. Pid: closing the gates. Covering the weak spots or blocking the attacks using the hard bony parts of the defender’s body. You can stop blows with the forehead, with the shoulder, with the forearm, with the elbow, with the shin, with the knee.

Muay Thai Poed: opening the opponent’s guard. Deflecting the attack while penetrating the adversary’s guard can be done with one or two arms, with one or two hands. Once a basic defensive action has been successfully applied, the defender should immediately counterattack with one or more strikes. In order to do that, his maneuvers must be very sharp and well timed. Because of that, this level of fighting is usually called “sharp fighting”. One of the drawbacks of this combat style is that the defender’s body must be strong enough to withstand the impact of blows that he is doomed to endure before he can retaliate with his own counter strikes. In Muay Thai, where boxers are paired according to strict weight classes, this may not be a big issue. On the contrary, in “martial fighting” the weight difference plays a big role, in favour of the heavier contender. Therefore, in ancient Muay, this level of fighting was considered pretty basic and a Nak Muay (thai boxer) who had reached the status of “sharp fighter” was still far from being at the top of his Art. Level 3 is a difficult one to master. Not many fighters will ever possess the skills inherent in this level. The Nak Muay who can dodge, slip or sidestep the opponent’s attacks and retaliate with lighting fast counters, is going to be the winner most of the times. If your enemy’s (body) weapons cannot touch you, they cannot hurt you. The problem here is that the defensive system used at this level is very advanced and not all fighters are able to master it unless they possess some natural attributes. The first and

Muay Thai most important attribute for a level-3 fighter is possessing good reflexes. Without the ability to detect the opponent’s attack before it is completed, dodging his strike making him barely miss the target, a boxer will never reach this level and will have to keep on structuring his style around a more basic approach (i.e., level 2). On the other hand, if a fighter is able to master these advanced tactics and manages to apply them in combat, every kind of opponent will have a very hard time facing him. No matter how big the adversary, a level-3 fighter will always be out of reach of the attacker’s strikes and will not suffer any hard impact. Too far or too close, he will spin a spider web around the attacker, hitting him from unexpected angles, aiming at the weakest spots of his anatomy. For this reason this level of fighting is called “wrap around”. Level 4 is even more complex and harder to master. Before being instructed in the subtleties of this level, a Nak Muay should be well versed in level 2 and 3. In level 4, the defender is actually the one who takes the initiative: closing the distance and attacking first can easily be mistaken with a “simple” direct attack. However, the fighter who has reached this pinnacle of Muay, is actually attacking the opponent’s attack. In simple

Muay Thai words, as soon as he detects the opponent’s “intent” to strike (or to step forward in order to strike), the defender anticipate his attack and, like a cobra, strikes first. The secret of this very high skill is to move when the opponent is already “committed to attack”. If the defender just switch to attacker’s mode and become the aggressor, he will lose all the strategic advantages of counter fighting. Straightforward attacks have nothing to do with Kon Kae style and with level 4 fighting. The mental aspect is preponderant at this stage: facing off against a strong opponent keeping a clear mind (so called empty mind) is no easy task. The body must be kept relaxed, breathing must be controlled and no trace of hesitation must be in the defender’s heart. When someone reaches this level of fighting his defense and attack will be as one and very few opponents will be able to resist him because he has attained the coveted skill of “sudden attack”. Parenting is Teaching Self-Esteem Vs. Self-Empowerment (3) In reality, what it really requires is hard work, lots of sweat, many tears, some blood at times, and many moments of selfdoubt, which must be overcome in order to achieve success. Randy Pausch, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University met an untimely death due to pancreatic cancer at a young age of 47, but before he died, he gave a lecture with only 3 to 6 months to live called “The Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” It is something that each professor at Carnegie Mellon is encouraged to do with the subject, what would your lecture be about if it were your last lecture? So, following their tradition he gave an impassionate talk and at the end he stated that this is truly his last and final lecture, and he did it all for his kids. In the lecture his main point to his children is that if you’re going to dream, dream big and in attempting to fulfill your dream you’re going to face many challenges, many walls and hurdles to overcome and that they are all there to test you to see how badly you really want it. Therefore, the key to success is not up to chance, but it is up to the person on how much they are willing to work towards it no matter how great the obstacles and challenges they are faced with and never giving up!

It’s not because the world is against you or due to society, gover nment, institutions, politics, race, sex, or any other internal or external factors, but it’s mainly due to your own will, determination, and fortitude. We all have deficits, weaknesses, hindrances and in order to succeed, those exact limiting factors are the very things that we must learn to overcome. So, in truth that is success, gaining the ability to overcome our doubts, fears, and weaknesses and not the superficial, materialistic, rewards and benefits that success brings. This is what we must teach our children, our students, to overcome their personal limitations and shortcomings and never to use them as crutches, falling as victims to the bias or prejudices of others, but as motivation and inspiration, using it to supercharge once’s convictions and determination. If the goal is preserving your self-esteem, then anything that will hurt, damage, or minimize the image of the self must be avoided. Furthermore, self-esteem only builds pride, which then leads to arrogance and self-righteousness, protected by stubbornness. The only way to grow is to learn, and what are you learning? Yes, it’s more knowledge of things you didn’t know previously, but it’s also knowing what you’re bad at, what your weaknesses are, which are discovered by erroring, failing, and losing. It is through correcting one’s mistakes, strengthening one’s weaknesses, practicing to improve in order to win, learning to get up after falling again and again, which build the resilience, the tenacity, and character that creates winners and champions of life. This is true success, one who is self-aware and does not rely on others nor external factors for his/her self-worth. It is a complete atrocity we are committing with our children within our primary schools with the policy of “there are no losers, everybody wins.” In playing games or sports, no one loses, they all win! Some schools don’t even give out grades. They do this in the name of protecting the children from emotional harm and distress in the hopes they will grow up to be more healthy productive adults, but the truth is to pacify them and the parents trusting in the system with the best of intentions, being fearful that they might damage their children buy into it, hook and sinker. They become more interested in not hurting their feelings and coddling them so that they do not damage the children’s fragile nature with the main objective of enhancing their self-esteem, not realizing that their fearfulness

Hwa Rang Do and over-protection is crippling them with all the best intentions. Having happy children are easier to manage and any child who’s not happy then they are labeled with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and are medicated to subdue them. This does not stop in childhood, many become dependent and remain on these psychoactive drugs all throughout their adulthood. I have had as students many children and adults who were on such medications, which I helped to stop. This is our society in which we do the same to its people, its citizens, by appeasing them and to make them think that everyone should be happy all the time and if you’re not, then there’s something wrong with you and they medicate to sedate

and subdue you, forcing you to become dependent on the state, a burden for all to bear. To conform to the norm as stated in such sayings as “the nail that sticks out gets hammered down”, which was a Japanese idiom, but now it’s adopted into the global consciousness. I can go on to state many things concerning this matter, but that’s for another time. Being always happy is impossible and once again sets unrealistic expectations, creating doubt and fear in the minds of the people if they are not always happy and uncertain in how to deal with negative thoughts and emotions, they become quick to seek professional help, which society, medical and pharmaceutical industries are more than happy to oblige. This is how upside down and

Hwa Rang Do twisted our culture, our society has become. The truth is being always happy is a sickness and having ups and downs is normal. In reality, in the real world there are clear winners and clear losers, highly competitive, cut-throat, dog-eat-dog world filled with vultures who wouldn’t hesitate to stab you in the back to get ahead. Everyone are not all winners and there can’t be, as in accordance to the popularly held doctrines it is anti-evolutionary. It is interesting and paradoxical with all the teachers, schools, government

officials who are mostly Darwinian, believing in the Theory of Evolution as truth, “the survival of the fittest,” how they can expound such an idea as axiomatic? This is why one can think that it is actually quite sinister. Essentially, the school system, which are supported by the public, by the parents who administer the same beliefs at home are in fact creating our children as “bait,” food for the sharks where only the few strong will thrive, feasting on the boundless supply of the weak and pacified. In the real Darwinian world, there only exists the prey and the hunter.

What we must teach our children is not the illusion, the lie that there are no losers, but the truth, the reality by teaching them how to deal with losing and show them how to win. This is the beginning of selfempowerment, self-awareness – awareness of the truth of the self and the world. One needs humility in order to learn as one must admit their faults, their mistakes if they are to listen, change, and grow. Being prideful, they are too self-righteous and too busy finding reasons why they are not wrong that they hear nothing, learn nothing, and never change nor grow. In fact, it takes courage to be truly humble as one must not be afraid to be vulnerable, to be found out, that in fact they really don’t know what they are doing, realizing that not everyone can be right all the time. The prideful, self-righteous, are in truth filled with uncertainty and they fear the most that others will find out, so they spend and waste much energy on defending their position rather than making the effort to change. They want more than anything to be right as they cannot face the truth, being already uncertain and instable as they are struggling to maintain a house of cards where if one card is knocked down the entire house will fall. So, has this method by our schools to enhance self-esteem by having no one lose work? Has it bettered, improved our children, teens, resulting in healthier and more productive adults? There are many

statistics out there to prove otherwise. However, I will limit myself only to my observations in my experiences throughout the many decades of teaching. These are the facts: Before 1990, before Tae Soo Do® was created, we only taught Hwa Rang Do®. There were only two classes daily (five days a week), a children’s class between the ages of 3 to 12 and an adult class from 13 yrs and up. Just to give an example, the Tae Soo Do Little Tigers who are children ages 3 to 7 white belt rank are only taught 4 basics with 2 kicking tests. In comparison Hwa Rang Do white belt rank requirements are 8 basics, 30 three-step sparring techniques, 2 kicking tests, a long-form, and they had to memorize verbatim our 5 code of ethics, and 9 morals in both English and Korean. For the children they had to do everything except they were responsible for only 10 of the 30 three-step sparring techniques. It takes our Little Tiger students now the same amount of time of approximately six months to test for their first belt, which is Orange Belt, as it did for our children before 1990 who were taught Hwa Rang Do. Furthermore, it takes on the average our adult students more than one year to test for each Hwa Rang Do rank now and before 1990, they were testing for each rank on the average of 4 to 6 months. I think that this says it all.… Tae Soo Do is more simplified with much fewer techniques than Hwa Rang Do, so it should take much shorter time to progress through the belt ranks and the students should learn and retain their material better. In addition, we have so many more study aids as in the form of textual study guides to online videos on all curriculum, which was non-existent before 1990. Therefore, with the current technologies and ease of living of our modern age, it should improve our productivity, performance, as well as giving more time in order to experience and enjoy more of life, but from what I have observed this hasn’t been true. Bunkai means Analysis, and we will analyze in the first DVD of this series, a “basic” movement, the Gedan Barai, also called “lower block", a movement that is found in almost every Kata of every Karate style. We will see the applications of our Kyusho CSEN / Kyusho Institute program, analyzing them through the knowledge of Kyusho, bearing in mind that the objective is not that of sports but personal defense. When a form, a Kata, is purely aesthetic, it has no value for your personal defense. Each movement must have a deep meaning to you, in fact at least 3.
