Lepine, Chief Instructor of Okichitaw Indigenous Combat Arts, introduces us to one of the most prized weapons among warriors, the "Chikuna-Kinas," or Fighting Tomahawk, an instrument that history has placed in our minds as aggressive and ruthless. In the possession of a skilled Indian warrior, the Tomahawk was considered a very convincing weapon in any close combat. In most combative actions, the application of a simple swing and strike with a Tomahawk against an adversary is anything but a simple task to complete without utilizing the guerrilla application of surprise. In Okichitaw, there are several practices and applications of the use of the Tomahawk in battle, not only from an offensive application, but also from a defensive perspective. In this video Chief Lepine explains in detail the basic working concepts with the Tomahawk, training, throwing, the 20 movements, combined handling with knife, defense and attack applications, and counter techniques against attacks with Tomahawk or other weapons. With this work, Okichitaw continues to honour indigenous traditions by training in the use of the fighting Tomahawk which ensures that not only this knowledge remains, but that we continue to move in the same way that our ancestors once did.

Master Daniel Guijarro presents for the first time and with the blessing of his own, the ancient tradition of knife fencing, the Cachaba and gypsy rod and gypsy fight of the Churi Romá School, from the lineage of the fencing of the Paulos, from the San Juan Montoya family in Ferrol, Galicia. onfusing the system with the Master is a major error but, at the same time, very frequent in every way. No, do not think that this is an exclusive mistake of the students; there are not a few Masters who fall into this same fault. The identification of the Masters with their systems, beliefs, or ideals, can become deep enough as to make them lose all perspective on it. It's just that, normally, at the top of the pyramids it's lonely, and this loneliness, sometimes chosen, others, come upon by that exclusive "magister" behavior, keeps them wrapped in their own entropy, with no other references than their memories or their own speech. Us humans, we all need to contrast, touch, question and ultimately lean on others, in socializing with our peers. The most elemental sanity demands it, except in the case, of course, that you decide to become a hermit. However, being in the world of the living, but isolated in ourselves, tends to play bad tricks on our good sense, limiting our capacity for personal weighing, judgment and balance. Not a few begin to identify in such a way with what they teach that any questioning on their person is considered a questioning on the system. They set themselves up as the system itself, and their judgment, whether wrong or not, becomes a bulwark that separates them from others and from reality. Once again, it proves that we can be our worst enemies. I have witnessed this process, near and far, countless times. Alleviating the entropy of groups, "ad divinis" suspensions, “falling from grace” and even purges, are well-known group adjustment mechanisms in politics, in companies and in any teaching profession. Also, in Martial Arts, where egos are substantially consistent.

Customary stupidity is still stupid. If my Master mistreated me in any way, I must mistreat my students, be it physically or psychologically. Sciences, even the sacred ones (very especially these latter ones), as Paulo Coelho pointed out, are not the inherent property of those who learned them. Seen in perspective, a Master is only a vehicle for his perpetuation and use, and although he has been chosen as the champion of the eternal flame, such honor, such achievement, does not grant him the right to administer it unjustly, according to his own will or convenience. The problem is that we are all human and act according to our limitations, but the Masters who have come to identify with their system so sharply sometimes forget it. When we hear the voice of God with a certain frequency, either we have become a god, or we are suffering symptoms of a schizophrenic constellation ... Or both! We are all human in the plural ... but also in the singular. No one is oblivious to his or her personal history, desires, learned tendencies, both conscious and unconscious, habits, and customs. Our self is made up of thousands of bits of experiences, past events, reactions, situations to which we have been exposed, and that make up a palette of colors and chiaroscuro that no one can skip. Pretending to remain always enlightened and unscathed, on the needle of the scale in perfect position, even supported by the univocal truth of a system, is arrogant and obtuse at the same time, not necessarily due to deficiencies in the systems themselves, but because we are the ones who we hide there, with our incongruities, prejudices, manias and personal stupidity, from which no one, and I mean no one, is excluded, be it Joseph of Arimathea or Christ blessed. Therefore, every effort to try to make others commune with millstone wheels, is, and it will always be, doomed to failure, or, at worst, it will be consummated, but those who achieve it will remain surrounded only by slaves or genuflected emulators; those, who always give you the reason in everything, in a sempiternal state of beatific circumspection. Respect, which begins with oneself, is something we owe to others, not forgetting that we are all limited and that perhaps (even if it's only perhaps), it may be that, once again, we are making mistakes. In this way, every one of us can rest better at night and, from time to time, it might just turn out that we are even a little happy ... from time to time.

SAMBO interviews Master Vladimir Yaprintsev "Honored Master of Sports of the USSR" (*), multiple World and European Sambo champion, member of the Executive Committee of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), President of the Athletes Association "We come from Sambo" and leader of the international movement with the same name. Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Sociology, sportsman, businessman, philanthropist… Despite the seriousness of his status, the weight of all his awards, and his influence in the world of sport (and not only), Vladimir is a "simple and very close man". This is what not only his friends and companions say of him, but also everyone who has come across him in the most varied manifestations; even in the hardest moments, he knows how to calm down the situation creating an atmosphere of lightness and tranquility around him. This quality of the Teacher is especially manifested in his sensitivity towards children and young sportsmen, for whom he gives master classes in different parts of the world and completely free of charge. One could think that, probably, his heart is still that of the 14-year-old boy from Ashgabat, his hometown in Turkmenistan, who had just won his first tournament. Master Vladimir has his own vision of the world, and it's very different from that of many. A look from a different angle. Many remember the story on the news, when a year ago, while in the intensive care ward with COVID-19, Vladimir Yaprintsev turned upside down ... and then, with acrobatic precision, demonstrated exercises from the Sambo arsenal, showing regularly video exercises to participants of international competitions, which shortly before his illness he organized together with his friends ... The goal of the government was that of not giving up, but to continue to set a personal example to the panicked population, and overcome the coronavirus test, so that people, while in quarantine, strengthened their physical shape and, as a result, increased the immunity in their bodies. That is his lesson! If the state of things does not suit you, raise your head, look at the world differently and fix what has to be fixed! What an example for the youth: it’s not just about "trampling on this earth", but with each step, make our planet turn, make it move forward, for the better, without wasting time! It's time to win! ur meeting took place early in the morning. And not in a cozy office, but in a wrestling room. As I finished the coffee I bought on the way, shaking off the last remnants of sleep and gathering my thoughts for the imminent interview, Vladimir easily threw his rivals on his thigh and while he was warming up, he made somersaults, several of them, stood up, pushed his fists and so on. When the training was coming to an end, I couldn't resist it and, as an old acquaintance, I called him from my place: "Hey, Vladimir, may I ask you an unplanned question? Do you start every morning with that training?" Smiling widely, he screamed in response: "Unfortunately, no! But I try ... It’s not just a fight ... It’s a lifestyle! Fights, you know, don’t just take place in gyms." - he started talking, sitting next to me and wiping his wet face. "Our interview is also sort of a fight. You will ask questions, you will lunge in my direction, and I, here - Vladimir laughed - will dodge, or give a symmetrical answer." But seriously, such a morning will be a good start to the day also because for me, and for many of my friends, SAMBO is, above all, a struggle with oneself, overcoming oneself, which helps a lot both in life and in business. No wonder sometimes they joke that SAMBO is a real social impulse..."

Budo International: So you’re saying SAMBO isn’t just a fight, right? Vladimir Yaprintsev: Very good! It's also a powerful form of psychological preparation. A kind of school of life, which teaches, on the one hand, self-confidence, flexibility of thought, courage, fortitude, psychological stability and, on the other hand, the ability to be friends ... also it fosters qualities such as honor, courage and mutual help. Sambo is a kind of "responsible success" philosophy. It contributes to the clear establishment and achievement of goals, the reaching of success, while building on the moral and ethical standards of the world’s religions. We motivate the person not only for personal success, but also for the need to share this success.

B.I: What would you say is the essence and advantages of SAMBO as a form of combat? V.Y: Well, here (laughs) you can do something easier to save our readers time... If you want to open the textbook "Sambo Wrestling" and read about pitches, grips, painful keys, etc... first let's address one another informally! But seriously, SAMBO was primarily developed as an applied discipline that provides effective self-defense, even in the case of attacks by an armed adversary. Here are included the most effective elements of various Martial Arts. It only takes the best. There are many different techniques in SAMBO. This allows everyone to choose and develop a style for themselves. In addition, SAMBO can be seen as a basic sport. Even children learn it very well. In addition, if you wish, everyone can go to the study of other Martial Arts and this will not require much effort because a SAMBO practitioner already knows many techniques and elements. Another important point is that regular SAMBO classes provide all the necessary physical activity. Many components of the body develop in a complex way: muscles, breathing, speed and reaction, coordination, vision. And one more advantage: low risk of injury. This is a comprehensive system that ensures the development of an athlete, regardless of age, weight and gender. And, of course, a set of techniques and movements that protect against injuries, both in gyms and in everyday life, even when practicing extreme sports that are now so fashionable among young people.

B.I.: Is there a secret in the effectiveness of SAMBO? Can you tell our readers? V.Y.: There is no secret, but many of our techniques are based on open movements. Movements consistent with our anatomy and physiology, that’s why beginners learn quickly and easily Sambo techniques. In addition, I re-emphasize, regardless of age, weight and sex. In general, Sambo is also an excellent base for other sports and other types of Martial Arts. For example, in MMA, a considerable part of the best fighters is, in their base, SAMBO practitioners.

B.I.: You’re talking about MMA... This is a fairly new version of Martial Arts... But Sambo is also a discipline in sports relatively young. Consequently, it must develop... Is this happening? Overall, is SAMBO transforming in any way? V.Y.: Yes, you’re right. It was only three years ago that SAMBO officially celebrated its 80th birthday, which compared to other historically established national Martial Arts, gives it relatively the age of a baby. Undoubtedly, Sambo is developing. Combat Sambo took shape only about 25 years ago, and it quickly gained popularity among young people. As something new, unusual... Female SAMBO is spreading more and more. We are testing and developing Adaptive Sambo quite successfully, which can be practiced by older people and people with disabilities. This is especially productive for children with different diagnoses. Adaptive Sambo helps them overcome congenital diseases, and it also socializes children well. We have very strong experimental groups of Adaptive Sambo for children in Sochi and Vladivostok.

“I was born and raised in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, then Soviet Socialist Republic of Turkmenistan.” And finally, the "entertainment genre" - Beach Sambo. By the way, it attracts a large number of spectators and participants, as is usually the case during the Christmas season. But all of the above is always based on Sambo sports and is, of course, the closest to me. B.I.: And when did you start distinguishing SAMBO from SAMBA? V.Y.: Well, then we didn’t really know Samba (laughs). But many people were involved in Sambo, new sections were opened everywhere. The first World Championships were already held, where ours always won. And then SAMBO were our Soviet Martial Arts... After all, we all lived in a great country: The Soviet Union... I myself was born and raised in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, then the Soviet Socialist Republic of Turkmenistan. My parents arrived at the Komsomol construction site and met there and I was born there. There were many like our family from all over the Soviet Union. Ashgabat was a typical Soviet city with a very international composition. Cultures and languages were so mixed that many words from other languages were native to me. No matter what nationality you were, no one just looked at you. They paid attention to character qualities and some youthful skills, which at that age were of special value. We were raised in the streets, everything was extremely simple and understandable. For example, not to defeat the weak, but I had to control myself, at the expense of my own character, a kind of reckless courage, which I seemed to have to show to my companions.

Sambo B.I.: And when did you start practicing SAMBO? V.Y.: Like you, Andrei, at the age of 12. Remember? Sambo was wrapped in a kind of halo. It was rumored that before entering school, a beginner would have to go through a tough test: they would break him an arm or a leg, but he would have to endure and not protest. Frankly speaking, that ritual worried me a lot: What if I couldn’t stand it? Then, however, my mother met her friend and proudly told her that her son was going to SAMBO. Knowing this guy, I thought if he could have passed that test, I could, too. Of course, nobody broke anything. I will say more: having gone to school only twice, I gained some skill and, to my surprise, I was quickly third on the local ladder. It is true that I had already done gymnastics before that and that gave me a pretty base ... I also wanted to play sports because in my childhood I wasn't distinguished by having a heroic complexion, rather, on the contrary, I was thin as a skeleton. I began to feel that SAMBO was my life at some point during the ninth grade. As a junior Turkmenistan champion, a friend took me to a motorcycle race. I fell in love with this sport! And I gladly accepted the invitation to come and train the next day. But then I thought, If I become a motorcycle racer, then I’ll have to forget about SAMBO and Judo. How do I do this if I was getting my coupons as an athlete at the time? And believe me, those 20 rubles were not at all superfluous in the family budget! So I consciously decided that this was going to be my job and that I should take it very seriously. Then I won the URSS Sambo championship; then the URSS Judo championship. They said they would take me to an inter national tournament in Bucharest, but naturally I didn’t go anywhere. Who needed a boy from Turkmenistan? After finishing school, and thanks to Nikolai Pavlovich Makarov, the great coach we adored, I went to Minsk, followed by Magomed Ramazanov and another group of our boys.

B.I.: What can you tell us about your teachers? Who are those people who discovered you and supported you to make a champion out of you? V.Y.: I’m aware that I was lucky to have found great coaches, I owe them a lot and I am very grateful to all of them: Viktor Petrovich Lazarev, thanks to whom I won the first victories in the URSS championship, and Nikolai Pavlovich Makarov, the head coach of the national team, who raised an entire galaxy of brilliant wrestlers. deeply in debt: Magomed Kurbanovich Ramazanov, Zinovy Grigorievich Lutskiv, Mikhail Mikhailovich Baranov, Yulian Yulianovich Novik... I always remember them with affection, and it's always nice to be with all of them! B.I.: Which coach impressed you the most? V.Y.: Boleslav Mikhailovich Rybalko, mentor of Alexander Vasilyevich Medved and URSS Honor Coach. He is a giant! I don’t think he knew all the nuances of leg passes, but he spoke to me with such respect, instilling in me the belief that I was a PERSON, and that support was extremely inspiring. And by the way, he also made me fall in love with science! And I, a child from Ashgabat, for whom all scientists were a kind of incomprehensible beings, wanted to become one of them. Under his influence, I completed graduate studies and, under the direction of Oleg Aleksandrovich Mikhnevich, I defended my doctoral thesis on the topic "National identity as an integral feature of the nation". B.I.: Let’s go back for a moment to the 1978 Minsk model... V.Y.: After Ashgabat, Minsk was a huge city where everything was different. I lived with a trainer in an apartment. After our old one-bedroom apartment, I was just amazed at its size, and so I dreamed that one day I would have one just like that.

Getting into high school wasn’t easy. I practically failed my chemistry test. After that shame, when I left the audience, I experienced one of the strongest tensions of my life. It was as if someone had grabbed from my toe, put me upside down, shook me well and knocked out everything superfluous and superficial. I was taken from home to Belarus, like a war hero. No one doubted that I would enter the Institute of Physical Education, I'd train myself, and then I'd become a champion. And yet now I had to go back. If there had been the war in Afghanistan, I would have enlisted at the time without a doubt. What I mostly wanted was to "throw myself into the pool", be where it was hard to be and where I had to prove what I was good for. But, thank God, they inscribed me again. All of this proved to be a lesson to me, and over the next year I even received an increased scholarship as an exemplary student. I recovered because in our group there were very serious students, people to match in sports success: Viktor Kreidich, Hovhannes Harutyunyan and many others... And here’s the paradox: I studied well, but my sports scores dropped. The year was difficult, I often lost: I made fifth everywhere, in the city, the republic, the Soviet Union... But at the end of '79 I got a second place in the adult RSS championship; then in the summer I prepared myself in the gym, I had to improve my physical condition.

Sambo In general, I was always an analytical fighter. I always reflected, analyzed and studied constantly about the fights, especially those of: Victor Bukhval, Magomed Ramazanov, Mikhail Baranov, Anton Novik, Vasily Krivonogov: I remember those times with great affection. We can say that we had probably the strongest team in the whole URSS, and we were all friends. Mikhail Baranov, Russian; Eduard Grams, German of Kazakhstan; Natik Bagirov, Azerbaijani; Magomed Ramazanov, Dargin (an ethnic group of North Caucasus); Nikolai Tsypandin, Yakut (an ethnic group of the Sakha Republic) and Viktor Bukhval and Anton Novikov, who are both Belarusian. B.I.: So the politicians decided that Sambo, unlike Judo, should not become a member of the Olympic family. Moscow opted for field hockey at the 1980 Olympics... V.Y.: I didn’t think about it at the time. In addition, Sambo was ahead of Judo in popularity and was more suited to me in terms of weight category. In Sambo I was up to 68 kilograms, and in Judo I was up to 71 kilograms. And from there is where the boys who were around the weight of the 75 kilos fought. I was around 71, that difference was fundamental. B.I.: You were appointed Honored Master of Sports of the USSR. Is this the most important title for you? V.Y.: I have been honored to receive the title of Honorable Master of Sports of the USSR; in any sport, that title is the most important award that can be received in our country. Throughout history, only 49 Sambo practitioners have been honored with it. B.I.: By the way, how do you assess the prospects now, when SAMBO has finally been recognized as an Olympic sport? V.Y.: I’m sure we now have a direct path to the Olympics! It’s time to give just notoriety to this sport, to its brilliance and nobility. No, I have no doubt that SAMBO has a great future in the Olympic family! B.I.: What drove you to get into business? V.Y.: It was after the collapse of the Union. Times were tough, the established system had collapsed, and I was already a married man. My family was growing up, and the family had to be fed. On a sporting level, I was already a veteran and sports have never been a means to make money, at least in my case, although at that time I had already been three times world champion (West Orange - 88, Moscow - 90, Montreal - 91), three times European champion (Leningrad - 86, Sofia - 87, Hearn Bay - 89), winner of the World Cup (Morocco - 87).

B.I.: And you got into business ... V.Y.: But I liked it, because always, whatever my business was, the base was sports. She was looking at everything through the prism of fighting. If it weren't for some life events, I would certainly have wanted to do more sport, devote my life, my time to it. More than business. But anyway, the base of my life is Sambo. And I think that by teaching it, attracting it, I am only paying my debt to the sport, to my teammates, to my coaches. I don't think my life will be long enough to pay off that debt. That is why we created "We come from sambo". We do not compete with the international and national Sambo federations. Their task is to train champions; ours is to attract people to this beautiful and noble sport and practice it for health and pleasure. Why noble? Because in fights without rules, if a fighter falls, they finish him off, but not in wrestling. Sambo is not just a Martial Art, it is a system of education that contributes to the development of moral and volitional qualities. A strong man is always kind. Look at Alexander Karelin, Alexander Medved, Artur Taymazov, Alexander Pushnitsa: on the outside they are tigers, but in reality they are the kindest people, always helping everyone. B.I.: You mentioned the popular movement “We come from Sambo”. Everyone remembered their online competitions, which were later taken up one by one, by the international federations, as well as by the IOC, the Paralympic Committee and others. Tell us more about that. V.Y.: “We come from Sambo” is an association of athletes, an international movement and an Internet portal for information analysis. It all started with an Internet portal - a unique project of its kind, which unites all Sambo fans - that we created in coauthorship with Nikolay Chukisov and Andrey Zhilko. After a while, when a wide circle of people interested in the development and popularization of Sambo began to gather around the portal, we realized that we had to move forward. We organize the Athletes Association "We come from Sambo". We did it together with my friends: Alexander Yakovlev (International Class Sports Master, Russian Honor Coach, International Sambo Tournament Winner and World Master Champion) and Sergey Ternovy (USSR Honor Sports Master, twice World Champion of Sambo). Our goal is

Sambo simple: bring together honorary veterans to transfer knowledge and experience to young people and contribute to the development of our favorite sport. We also host several mass events: the annual Union State Absolute Sambo Cup. The best heavy and "semi-heavy" Sambo wrestlers from various countries participate in the tournament. Last year we held the World Sambo Championship among masters. The public loved it. Everyone highlighted the good organization of the events. Of course, this is also thanks to the direct involvement of socially responsible companies. From the beginning, our work has been actively supported by Leonid Yakovlevich Slobodsky and Vladimir Sergeevich Gruzdev, for which we want to express our gratitude on behalf of all members of our movement. We have a lot of work to do. Even during the pandemic we did not sit idly by. When millions of people were trapped between four walls, together with Alexander Yakovlev, director of the Alexey Evteev Association, and our coordinator of the movement in Germany, Andrei Gertsen, we organized an online contest. We offered to compete in exercises available on a normal floor. Our project "On a wave Stay live" received the moral and physical support of thousands of people in many countries around the world. The boys understood how difficult it is for those who are isolated, and did everything possible to help their colleagues from other countries. Zhanna Aiba, Editor-in-Chief of the "ROSSport"

portal, was a great help in organizing online events. It was not only fun, but also productive and healthy. It also allowed professional and amateur athletes from different countries to get to know each other, to strengthen, so to speak, sports links. Our members hold various sporting events, organize master classes for all concerned, and participate in charitable and social activities. Krav Maga I.M.A.D.S “Being physically fit” - Part 2 Flexibility When I wrote my last article, entitled “What does being physically fit mean?”, I shared with you the different main components of physical condition. One of them was deliberately omitted. I mean "Flexibility". On that occasion we omitted it, because in reality this component deserves much more than a few lines, it deserves a complete article or more.

Krav Maga Let's get down to brass tacks! Etymology of "flexibility": from Latin “flexibilis”, flexible, manageable, mobile. In anatomy: Flexibility is the latitude of motion of a joint or series of joints. My goal with this article is to facilitate understanding of this complex subject, whose extensive vocabulary often leads to confusion. To understand what we do to our bodies, it is essential to know what we are doing. This does not mean embarking on in-depth studies, but simply getting in the habit of asking the right questions. The improvement of flexibility (often called limberness), is achieved by improving two elements: elasticity (elastin) and strength (collagen). These two components are part of the structure of the muscles and, more specifically, of their envelope (connective tissue). There are actually two types of protein fibers: collagen provides strength, while elastin makes these tissues more elastic. To have a strong and flexible body, like that of your Physical Education and Sports Master, you need both. The ratio between these two components is paramount to avoid injury. Therefore, you need to train strength (body building) and flexibility (stretching). Aging and sedentary life unbalance that ratio, too much collagen and too little elastin. Without being dramatic, a young person who does not move enough, actually has the same body as a healthy older person. The good news is that, at any age, you can choose to take care of yourself and make up for what you've lost or reach a new goal. “You will never reach your full movement potential without a strong and flexible body!”

Fasciae ... what is it? Many good articles have been written on this subject. I share with you one of them, which offers a clear and understandable explanation (source: www.ligues-rhumatisme.ch) Taken from the Latin “fascia” (Band), this word more or less designates connective tissue. Since fascia research has been carried out around the world, the new term has tended to catch on its own. Fasciae are found throughout most of the body parts: in the skin, cartilage, bones, joints, tendons, muscles, and organs, including the brain and spinal cord. Some fascia cells, for example fibroblasts, produce huge amounts of various substances, especially elastin and collagen fibers. Collagen is a special form of protein. Collagen fibers can join together to form cords that have tensile strength. Likewise, fibroblasts make up fibers that can stretch over twice their length under the influence of elastin. Placed between muscles, organs and other tissues, they serve as both lubricant and glue. The more flexible and elastic these fibers are, the more physical sensations we have and the more mobile and efficient our body is. Most of all, modern fascia research has found that all fasciae are interconnected. They form a tightly woven network that envelops and crosses all muscles, bones, organs, etc.

Krav Maga The example of muscles helps to understand better: it's not only the muscle as a whole that is enveloped by a network of fasciae, but also each muscle bundle and each muscle cell. Without fasciae, muscles would lose their shape, bones their stability, and organs would collapse inside the body.

The amazing properties of fasciae Since it is possible to observe fasciae using highresolution ultrasound, research has made some amazing discoveries. It is thus known that the fasciae can contract independently of the muscles. They store energy and organize the transmission of muscle forces. Furthermore, fasciae contain many more motion sensors and pain receptors than muscles and joints, making connective tissue the largest sensory organ in the human body. Closely linked to the vegetative nervous system, it continuously sends signals to the brain. These are the fascias that allow us to perceive our body and perform all of our movements without having to focus on each of our steps and gestures. In addition, the fasciae have an affective memory. They memorize everything we experience and therefore also the pains.

Fasciae and back pain Fasciae are sensitive to a number of stimuli, including stress, excessive strain on the body from sport, but also insufficient strain due to lack of exercise. In this case, the fasciae thicken, stick together, become entangled and send signals to the muscles, causing them to secrete inflammatory substances.

In particular, fascia specialists suspect the lumbar fascia to cause lower back pain in this scenario. The lumbar fascia is the largest fascia in the body. Located above the pelvis, it connects the back muscles to the muscles of the buttocks and thighs.

Fasciae in shape “When we don't move, we rust”. That's what fasciae specialist Robert Schleip says. Regular physical activity stimulates the replacement of worn-out fibroblasts, the old fascia cells, by new, more elastic cells. Flexible movements such as jumping, hopping or dancing, as well as "chain stretching" are particularly beneficial. The expression “chain” means in this

Krav Maga context that it’s not enough to stretch only the calf or the thigh (as in conventional stretching methods), but that it’s necessary to involve in the same stretching movement, for example, from the lower back, buttocks and legs, down to the soles of the feet (plantar fascia).

Conclusion Currently, we are facing a difficult period which accentuates sedentary lifestyle. What should be remembered from this article is that a sedentary lifestyle accentuates ailments, aging and considerably increases the risk of injuries and their severities. An injury will undoubtedly affect your training program, but also your mental health! The good news is that solutions that are accessible to all exist, they have just been presented to you through this article. Jeet Kune Do Accepting advice and sometimes criticism One of the greatest plagues of our time in the martial arts is the failure of students or future teachers to accept advice from their teacher. There is a disconcerting susceptibility among too many students. Indeed, only compliments and flattery are accepted, and as soon as a teacher tries to give advice to make them progress, the students get angry and leave the club. The purpose of advising is to help the student achieve the goals he or she has set when joining the club. Advising is, by definition, a tool for progress and in no way devalues the student or the teacher being trained or retrained. Several decades ago, students sought all the advice they could get to make constant progress.

oday, most students no longer want to train to achieve a goal, but only aim to be the best without wanting to sweat to become the best. As I said in a previous article, teaching through appreciation allows the student to not get discouraged and thus progress effectively at their own pace to reach their goals. However, as I also pointed out, when people are valued, more and more often they do not tolerate any advice because they think they know everything and by valuing themselves they think they are better than others, including the teacher. Then they have no connection with the reality of their true level. But every advice would help them to progress and become better than they were.

In the end, the student prefers to lie and brag to people outside the club where he practices. We see that today, the real level is not built in the sweat of a gym, but on the internet through social networks and the tools available to pretend to be of this or that level. Of course, as I often point out, all the time spent chatting on the internet is not time spent in training. Some people forge a reputation as excellent teachers and experts, thanks to diplomas bought or acquired through the complacency of other teachers, who in turn receive diplomas signed by these same newly graduated teachers. It is then an exchange of good principles that leads to cheating on the veracity of their true background and level. What happened to the values instilled in the martial arts and combat sports halls?

Where are the desires for self-improvement and self-improvement throughout life? Don't our practices aim to develop a lifestyle that consists of wanting to progress more knowing that there is no end to it? It is a lifestyle and not a consumer good to be bought and obtained in a weekend, a week, a year or more. No, it will require a lifelong commitment, adapting of course our training to our age, professional life, family life, etc. In no case, a true practitioner will stop practicing because it is his or her way of life in the same way that breathing is vital. This true practitioner will always seek the help of his or her teacher, and will be grateful to him or her for life, regardless of the paths they both take over time.

Jeet Kune Do Another phenomenon related to the departure of students who do not accept advice or constructive criticism: they leave and forget the teachers who have allowed them to reach the level they have. This hurts and affects, of course, the teachers who gave everything: their time, their knowledge and everything they could pass on to these limitless practitioners. Ingratitude has become very common in our disciplines. It goes against all martial values and these practitioners should ask themselves about their legitimacy in a gym. A person without recognition, without values, without selflessness, will never be able to progress. Nowadays it is common to read the curriculum of practitioners who show 40 years of martial practice; but this figure corresponds to the beginning of their practice.

Indeed, practicing continuously for 40 years does not have the same meaning as having started martial arts 40 years ago. Often, in fact, these practitioners have only practiced, 5 or 10 years at most during their childhood and adolescence, and then stopped all practice to resume it at the time of the mid-life crisis. This is therefore incomparable to a continuous practice.

Jeet Kune Do Of course, my point is not to criticize your practice time, but just to remember that honesty is a fundamental component of martial arts. So having your picture taken with a great master, or having trained for a few years with a master, does not mean that you are a master yourself. Being a teacher requires a long training with recycling and requires authorization through a diploma delivered by a real teacher or master to teach. Legitimacy is, in my opinion, indispensable to be able to present oneself honestly to the future students who give us their time and trust. When I speak of training, I am of course making a parallel with the advice and sometimes criticism that will mark our path. It is impossible to imagine that we will be praised throughout our training, because sometimes our teacher will have to criticize us to put us on the right path. These criticisms will only serve to make us progress further and avoid stagnation or regression. Indeed, every practitioner has moments of doubt, of discouragement, of motivation and it is then the role of the teacher to indicate this to the

practitioner, sometimes even blowing in the bronchial tubes to encourage him. Advice and criticism are never given at random. Each time allows us to overcome stages and advance further in our martial knowledge. Nothing is ever taken for granted, we must review everything to improve our technique, our way of fighting and understand a little more this wonderful world that is martial arts and combat sports. This understanding and our sincere practice will allow us to be able to effectively transmit what we have learned because let us never forget that one of the fundamental principles of our arts is to transmit and restore what we have been taught. Without assiduous practice, as well as proper and rigorous training, this flame of transmission will never endure over time, due to the loss of the quality of the values transmitted through the teaching and living standards of our arts.

Edged Weapon Defense Never has so much been said and written about a subject of which people knowso little. Of all the possible topics an instructor could choose (whether unintentionally or not) in which to misinform students, defense against the knife is by far the most dangerous. Anyone claiming to be an expert with a knife who teaches blocking, emptyhand disarms, and low horse stances might as well be teaching students to catch bullets in their teeth. Because there are so few knife fighting tournaments in the United States, it isdifficult for a prospective student to gauge the authenticity of an edged weaponsinstructor. It seems all one needs to fool the general public is a pair of green army pants, a photo of the instructor with a nasty expression on his face, his knife positioned on his opponent's throat, and SHAZAM! We have "Instant Rambo!"

Paul Vunak y far, the most realistic methods for fighting and training with all types of edged weapons come from the Philippines. Real confrontations with blades are all too common there; their fighting techniques have nothing to do with phony heroism and everything to do with survival. What I would like to do is delineate and prioritize a few of their techniques and training methods.

(1) FOOTWORK: Proper footwork is vital to knife fighting; in fact, it is theinfrastructure for almost everything we do. Footwork allows us to maintain the correct distance between our opponent and ourselves. Having a low stance with no footwork in this arena is like having a Ferrari with no wheels. We need to move quickly toward, or away from, our opponent. When an attacker has a knife, the necessity for good footwork is tripled. But what is the proper footwork? When we think of good footwork in the realm of boxing, almost instantly we picture Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard. The way these boxers move - light, catlike, sticking and moving - is real knife fighting footwork! When you have a razor-sharp knife in your hand, it is fairly obvious that you do not need to plant your feet to do damage to your opponent. Of course, if you are punching and kicking, it behooves you to get lower and load up for delivering combinations. However, in a knife fight it is far more important to stay as light and as agile as possible. One razor slice across the knife hand or one quick thrust directly in the face may be all it takes to end the altercation. So, remember, when a knife is in the hand, get up on your toes and move.

(2) DISTANCING: The distance at which we choose to fight our opponent is one of the most important points relative to winning the altercation. In almost every article, video, or seminar I have seen, the instructor has his students knife fighting in boxing range; that is, close enough for the students to exchange punches. Please, watch just one round of your favorite boxing match (anyone will do) and count how many times each fighter is hit. Now, imagine if these

boxers removed their gloves and had straight razors put into their hands ... they would be wallowing in a pool of blood within ten seconds. There are literally hundreds of drills that involve closequarter knife and stickwork; however, these drills were developed to improve one's attributes, such as sensitivity, coordination and body mechanics. We call this selfperfection. This should not be confused with real weapons fighting for self-preservation. This is why in real combat, experienced knife fighters always fight out of what is called largo mano range Oust outside of kicking range). The reason is twofold: first, with proper distance he can more easily avoid being sliced, and secondly, his primary objective is cutting his opponent's knife hand, which is also called ...

(3) DE-FANGING THE SNAKE: If you can cut the opponent's hand there will be an instant disarm. It is a physical impossibility to hold a knife when the tendons, muscles, and ligaments responsible for movement of the hand are severed. Once you have defanged the snake, the snake is harmless and you are now given the choice to kill it or let it go. Using both correct footwork and maintaining the proper distance from an opponent are crucial to de-tanging the snake. This same principle also applies to stick fighting. In most moder n-day stick tour naments, we see protective headgear on the fighters who are mostly headhunting. Putting on a helmet and going all-out teaches students how to deal with adrenaline and is certainly a worthwhile experience. This type of practice should constitute about five percent of your training. Also remember to wear protection on the hands, and don't ignore the hand smash! In a tournament, we can witness up to 20 hand smashes without a single point being awarded; yet, when contact to the head is made, points are given. This is simply unrealistic. Generally, in stick tournaments, the participants use rattan sticks. The rattan sticks have air going through them; they are considered practice weapons. If stick fighters used no protection for their hands (as in a real fight) and were using real pieces of oval or hexagonal oak or other hardwood, or perhaps using real pieces of lead pipe, any of those neglected hand smashes would shatter every bone in the opponent's hand! Although from a sport viewpoint these types of matches are very entertaining,

Paul Vunak compared to real combat they are akin to having a pillow fight.

(4) TIMING: A sense of timing is equally as important as the attributes of footwork and distancing, although it is certainly more ambiguous and difficult to explain. Timing can be thought of as hitting your opponent either before, during, or after he takes a shot at you. Timing is much more of a "heady" game; you must feel that splitsecond opening for your shot. When one has an expert sense of timing, he can literally move at one-tenth speed and still connect. I have been hit ten-to-one by old Filipino guys in their 70s. To develop impeccable timing, one needs awareness and line familiarization. These are attributes, which tend to improve with age and experience. After sparring briefly with Cacoy Canete, who at age 65 basically used my body for target practice, I asked him (while rubbing my welts) at what age was he in his prime. His response was, "In about another ten or 15 years!" Now let's talk about the relatively less-important points of knife fighting. As with most things in life, perception is everything. If you perceive the three points mentioned earlier to be the most important points in knife fighting, you will be concentrating on the finger and missing "all the Heavenly glory" (to paraphrase Bruce Lee). So, what should you do if you are actually attacked by someone with a knife? First, try to run like Carl Lewis! It has been said that to defend yourself against the blade, you must first learn to fight with the blade. The more you understand the concepts behind fighting with a knife, the more you respect the awesome damage it can inflict. Unlike a punch or a kick, all the blade has to do is make contact. The attacker does not even have to be particularly skilled with a knife to seriously hurt you!

Paul Vunak Instructors who teach disarming an angry person with a razor are living in a fantasy world. They do not understand the grim reality of a knife fight, most likely because they haven't experienced one. However fun or romantic it may be to picture yourself instantly disarming a knife from a mugger's hand, the reality is that if you were to make such a decision, it could be your very last. A very simple acid test demonstrates what will not work: Go to the store and buy an industrial-strength, extra-large red marker. Find a confined area and instruct a friend to assault you full speed as though the marker were a live blade (not "locking out" any strikes, just slicing and thrusting quickly). Now, try to apply any blocking or disarming techniques. You will find that you will finish this drill with red lines slashed all over your body! This graphic illustration will hopefully persuade you that running remains the best option. But suppose there is no avenue of escape. Perhaps you are in a crowded restaurant with your family or in a fenced-in area. Option two is for you to find an equalizer. A good first reaction would be to grab a knife if you happen to have one; or you could pick up a bottle to hold the attacker at bay. Projectile weapons are great equalizers - pool balls, a chair, a table, pool cues, hot soup in the guy's face – anything to distract this person so you can safely escape. Finally, we must discuss one final possibility: You are confronted by an angry person with a razor, there is nowhere to run, and there are no equalizers available. (You are in a handball court with Freddie Krueger guarding the exit!) Personally, I would probably try my odds with a very low and well-timed doubleleg takedown, then smother the attacker and simultaneously engage in Kina Mutay. Even though this strategy may be the most viable, the reality is that I will still be cut by the knife, perhaps fatally. Again, my response of choice when confronted by a blade is to run! There are many reasons to develop your skill as a knife fighter. Training with a blade is one of the best ways to improve many of the attributes that help you as a martial artist. In terms of self-preservation in an edged weapon attack, you should concentrate your training on the four most important points of knife fighting: 1. FOOTWORK - Light, loose, and up on your toes (like a boxer). 2. DISTANCE - Largo mano range (past kicking range). 3. DE-FANGING THE SNAKE - Make the opponent's knife hand your primary target. 4. TIMING - Flight time, flight time, and and more flight time!

Jordan Augusto Cultural Center! This is the name of Shidoshi Jordan Augusto's new school in Valencia – Spain, where he resides. We were with Shidoshi and found out a little more about this beautiful new project.

Budo International: A new name, different from previous projects? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: We are in a new phase where many professionals who reside in Japan and other countries have expressed their interest in working together with our school, and due to government reasons, licenses, etc., a cultural center would be the easiest way. In essence, however, the school remains the same, with greater openness and investment regarding the pedagogical and philosophical part. This opens up new horizons and opportunities for us to work with specialized professionals.

Budo International: Many masters from other schools are now studying your knowledge and showing great satisfaction. Is this new? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: No. It has been going on for more than five years and this project has been growing more and more with the arrival of different people who, with new ideas, helped to better organize this new stage. A lot of new things have emerged in terms of changes in the aspect of study possibilities, for example: What once depended on a given degree, or you couldn’t speak about with people from other schools, today is possible. We are in a new era and adaptation is inevitable for the maintenance of the tradition itself. Budo International: Is this your initiative? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: No, it already happened in Brazil in the 60s and 70s. Perhaps - I can't say precisely - some bad experiences made this beautiful project cease to exist. It was another time and people worked differently.

Budo International: What are your expectations for this new time? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: I must confess that, as this project has matured little by little, there is not much expectation, but rather continuity. The main objective, without a doubt, is the conservation without loss of essence. As for the location, the goal is offering a better atmosphere for socializing and learning. The idea of working with professionals from Japan and other countries is that of opening the door to a new vision. There's still much misinformation!

Budo International: Will new activities be offered? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: I believe all the ones from before (Aikijujutsu, Jujutsu, Battoujutsu, Shurikenjutsu, Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu, Koppojutsu….), only with a better didactic. Technology support gives us the opportunity to improve materials, videos, video conferencing assistance…. Perhaps the new will continue in this direction. Budo International: Something from the outside? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: Yes, in the cultural center there are projects that involve masters from other arts and schools. Budo International: How does this cultural center fit into this new phase of your life? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: Well, different measures require different reflections. We are all in an adaptation time. It is curious, but the word adapt means the quality of “accommodating” to a certain situation. Man is eminently an adaptive being. Covid-19 changed all of our lives. It brought to light our fragility and with it a need for reassessment. Whenever we reevaluate ourselves, we discover new facts related to old themes. A little of Socrates' Maieutics, which is associated with the technique of "giving birth to knowledge", since this is present in every human being. Knowledge should only flourish little by little with the help of some guiding stimuli. Whenever we find ourselves under pressure, something changes. Covid-19 changed the entire planet. The cultural center was part of an ideal. Ideals are part of life's balances.

Budo International: How will this work in the post-pandemic? Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: We are still groping for the “future to come”. Nobody knows for sure what will happen, however, the reality and the idea are the two extremes of our path, whichever this might be, they are the today and tomorrow of our life, they are the two poles of our world, between which oscillate and take place all our movements.

Budo International: Your wife told us that there is a huge project that involves many countries, please tell us a little more about that. Shidoshi Jordan Augusto: As I told you before, the facilities of the technological world allow us to be in real time anywhere in the world. With good equipment, you can teach classes to a large group of people and correct them just as if they were at your school. Borders no longer exist. Thus, it changes the concept of life from the most elementary basis related to time and space. The world has become a possible project today. In this new time, it is possible to concatenate in a pedagogical, logical and systematic elaboration, what presents itself as a single and compact block of knowledge.

Every concept, in fact, is traversed many times and each time it goes deeper, in order to appear expanded and linked to other new and innovative concepts. In many of our meetings with psychologists, pedagogues, doctors, etc., we find that, in this way, our knowledge is progressively expanded, both in breadth and in penetration, and thus, starting from general principles, we increasingly approach practical performance. Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

The art of defense when observing the touchable and the untouchable All around the globe, we share the same anatomy yet are divided by religion, location, skin tone, the cultures and subcultures that guide our day to day activities and deeper. In this column, I would like to split humanity at large into two: the touchable and untouchable. An armored knight in battles of old was as untouchable as can be and their opponents had to seek the opening in their armor to gain any leverage. So must we do.

A line can be drawn in the sand, dividing these two concerning almost everything, taxes, laws and how society casts it's vote on their actions and words. For the touchable, the law always apply and they are required to abide by all rules and regulations. At the same time, the untouchable is protected by the law and is unfettered by the responsibilities and consequences of their actions, protected by the same bodies that formulate and apply the laws.

hese untouchables are politicians, gover nmental authorities, and judges, even actors, religious leaders and the wealthy are able to dodge the consequences of the law, purchasing their way to freedom and happily exempt the penalties of their crime and the consequences of their actions. Can we defend ourselves in this untouchable society and how? At day's end, we are all human no matter if we are a part of the clergy, born to royalty or lower on the totem pole. In the last few months, I have had to entertain this issue as to how can a regular citizen protect themselves against these forces and defend one's self. Years back, I found myself up against a very well known judge armed with high-profile lawyers, all dedicated to bringing me down. While others were afraid to stand by my side and gave up, I smiled, God didn't grant all the wisdom and intelligence to just these people who were coming to get me. This brought me back to the concepts of self-defense. In Krav Maga, they looks for the weakest part of your opponent, "No groin, no Krav Maga", whereas in KAPAP we look at the strongest part, that's why the concept is "No brain, no KAPAP". In the cyber realm, we are all equal the moment you have access to Wi-Fi, you're a top Instagram model and I'm an elite Call of Duty soldier... Have you noticed the growing demand to POLICE the free internet, the last vestige of actual journalistic freedom? Since the media is already on the side of the highest bidder, they are constantly heralding on behalf of the politicians and the wealthy. You already see this on social networks censoring the "wrong" opinions and attempting to control our minds by curating what everyone sees. Once a blog gains some popularity, there is already someone waiting to get their hands on it and control the message. It's hard to trust the news as we all know CNN works for the CIA for example and many times certain opinions are blacked out or censored by the army of editors and producers when it goes against their narrative. The first thing to understand in self defense is to never give up. While everyone else got a case of cold feet when they saw I was up against a established judge, the key was to understand that you never give up and you utilize all the tools you have at your disposal, but first and foremost your brain. We can take twins and teach one of them how to move her body and the difference in a self defense situation will be start and primal. We can do the same within out minds.

The majority can be equated to a sleeping giant, able to regain control at any time when it wakes and takes charge. There is a situation where a well-known Bishop assaulted my wife and struck her. Thankfully, she was able to employ some self-defense moves to protect herself and survive. Presently, the police are involved in the case and begin to act against those who think they are untouchable and as grassroots groups of martial artists, actors and women emerge from the US beginning with Professor Machado BJJ and his well-known pupil Keanu Reeves, and around the world to show their support and join us in the fight so we can finally see some progress. Join us in the fight against those who think they can commit crimes and face no justice because of their connections with the powers at be and wealth. Stand up and say "NiSiSAMA" -- NO MORE (in Serbian)! -- no more exemptions from the law and consequences. Violence against the young and helpless cannot be met with silence. Welcome to the battle versus the untouchables.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.

WHERE DOES WINGTSUN REALLY COME FROM? F or som e y e a r s n o w, when one opens a W ingTsun book (of any branch) one finds a few brief notes on the origin of the style. There seems to be one version accepted by the vast majority of schools as to how the origin of this formidable style came about: it seems that a Buddhist nun named N Mui taught a girl named Yim W ing Chun (Yim "Praise of the Beautiful Spring") a series of "Chinese boxing" moves that helped her defeat a local bully who wanted to make her his wife against her will.

Undoubtedly a very romantic version that serves to explain briefly (without going into too much detail) where WingTsun comes from and above all to give a "special" origin to a style that did not have too much "weight" in China. Let's think that WingTsun was a style without social presence if we compare it with others, and that until the first half of the twentieth century it was practically unknown as it was considered a "secret" style.

ut the truth is that if we look at how fighting styles arise, it is difficult to believe that a style emerged at a particular time as if it were a flower that emerges in the field. That is to say, it is very difficult to specify the exact moment when WingTsun was created and above all, that the style itself was a closed, complete and perfect style. No human activity is bor n by spontaneous generation and appears fully developed from the beginning. Everything is born, grows and ends up dying. Everything arises from a previous substratum, from something that existed previously and matures and changes continuously, and when it ceases to do so, it disappears. Think of automobiles and compare the latest Formula 1 models with the cars of the beginning of the 20th century. Some WingTsun scholars wanted to know more about the origin of the style we practice. Perhaps GM Leung Ting is one of the most constant in terms of studies on the origin of Chinese Martial Arts and WT in particular. Through his travels and consultations with former AAMM masters he came to conclusions that with absolute certainty are much closer to a more realistic and less "romantic" version of the origin of this style (see his work Roots of WingTsun). GM Leung Ting puts forward a theory that in my opinion has a good chance of being close to reality. The why or where personally would not interest me too much if it were not for the fact that the origin of this style marks a radical change in the conception of combat and, in my opinion, this origin does condition the work and philosophy of the style. It is also very interesting because it orients us on the technical/strategic character of our style and how to focus our training for its improvement. These are in my opinion the most important motivations to look for the origin of the style we practice. Knowing our past to design our future, so: "... Once upon a time in China...." Nun Ng Mui is credited with creating several styles. It seems that she was a scholar of the

"soft" styles, specifically the Weng Chun Bac Hoc style (White Crane style of Weng Chun, Weng Chun is a district in the Fukien region). Legend has it that Ng Mui was inspired to create what was later called "WingTsun" by observing the fight between a crane and a fox. Personally, the idea that by simply watching some animals for a few seconds one could "invent" something as sophisticated as WingTsun seems far-fetched to me. G.M. Leung Ting met in Germany a Thai master named Sunthus Supasturpong, former Muay Thai champion of Thailand, who practiced an ancient martial art of his country: the Lim Long style, which means "flying monkey". This art was developed in the border region between Thailand and China, a region very close to the place where Ng Mui is traditionally supposed to have taken refuge. Well, to G. M. Leung Ting's surprise, the Lim Long had a 70% technical coincidence with WingTsun. It could not be a coincidence. Later he found out that in that region of

China, the word for a certain species of monkey and the one used for fox were very similar, almost the same, and a person who did not master the dialect could easily confuse them (this is a characteristic of the Chinese language in which there are lots of homophonous words, which having a different meaning are pronounced the same). This fact was like a revelation because then the legend of the fight between the crane and the fox would be nothing but the symbol of the fight between the crane and the monkey, that is, between the Weng Chun Bac Hoc style and the Lim Long style. Thus we would have that Ng Mue as a representative of the "white crane" style, performed a combat or a technical exchange with a representative of the "flying monkey" style. The result was the creation of a "hybrid" style, which she then transmitted to Yim Wing Chun. This new style had revolutionary characteristics, totally different from the styles of the time. Here we see a connection between WT and Thai Martial Arts that explains some similarities between WT and Muay Thai in the elbow and leg work, very different from other Chinese styles and more similar to other Thai styles. This new system was characterized by making technique and strategy far superior to brute force. In which the development of "elastic force" was the engine of its combat system.

Some even suggest that the nun Ng Muei was not a woman, but a very small man. Very thin, with little strength, No doubt, that is an unimportant detail, although my theory is that it was a woman. The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. In memory of GM Pedro Hemetério Araújo de Castro (1923-2009) When I met Grandmaster Pedro Hemetério at his "Academia de Jiu-Jitsu" in São Paulo, it was mainly white and blue belts who were on the training mat. From time to time there was also a violet and brown belt, but whether they wer e dir ect students of Professor Pedro, I am not so sure today. One of the r easons was that with Pr ofessor Pedr o (as we students affectionately called him), whoever wore a blue belt counted as a coach. During one of my numerous training visits to his academy, I asked him directly why this was so, and he said that he would never force a student "not" to wear a purple or brown belt, but most would prefer to wear a blue belt even after fifteen years, since the competition among themselves was also very high.

n fact, it happened several times that I trained with students of Professor Pedro who had been with him for ten or more years and still proudly wore their blue belt but had reached a very high level. Only Professor Pedro wore the black belt he had received from his first teacher, Carlos Gracie. Under Hélio Gracie, who developed Gracie Jiu-Jitsu especially in the 50's and 60's, Pedro Hemetério stood by Grandmaster Hélio's side as an assistant and conducted a very large number of private and group classes for the Gracie family in Rio de Janeiro. In Sao Paulo we were very happy to learn from this great person and master of authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, so that the color of the belt no longer interested any of us. People often ask me if Grandmaster Pedro ever wore the red belt he wore back in Rio de Janeiro, in the presence of his teacher GM Hélio Gracie also during classes. I saw Professor Pedro with a red belt only once or twice, to take photos for magazines and visitors. Otherwise, he wore the black belt, as also mentioned above. When I first visited him, he handed me a magazine where he was photographed with a blue belt. This had also been done by GM Hélio Gracie, protesting the numerous new black belts who, in their opinion, did not have the sufficient knowledge to be a black belt.

Street and practice-oriented Jiu-Jitsu… Hélio Gracie was much more than just his teacher to Professor Pedro, I realized that quite early. If I questioned something, why a technique could be done this way and not another way, he took me into the position and let me feel it - despite his already higher age but never with force and power. He could pass any guard position practically in slow motion, even if one or the other would try not to allow it. He had an incredible sense... in this form I know it only from Master Rickson Gracie and Master Carley Gracie, who also belong to this first generation of "Brazilian" Jiu-Jitsu. I believe that Carlos Gracie and Hélio Gracie realized very early that Professor Pedro not only had an excellent physical condition for Jiu-Jitsu, but also that he was very intelligent and had a special finesse. He was a Diamond of a man. I am convinced that no matter what he did, he already had by nature, the right condition and attitude.

Professor Pedro had a special way, and in everything he did. If he had wanted to, he probably would have become a "master leader" of Jiu-Jitsu, because he attracted people without wanting to. His knowledge, and not only in (Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu, made him this person you absolutely had to meet, and if you had the chance to learn from him, you would have benefited from it.

When I met him, he was already over 75 years old and although he was struggling a bit with his health, he continued to put on his white kimono and stand on the training floor to impart his great knowledge. In the beginning, the school was well attended, but soon a change was felt, because the numerous tournaments attracted the young people more and more to go to other

BJJ schools; here you earned your belt by winning tournaments, which was completely against the philosophy of Professor Pedro. You came to Professor Pedro to get the "basics", because nobody mastered them like he did, but to advance in the belt hierarchy, it was much easier in the other BJJ schools. In some cases, you reached black belt after only four or five years, if you also had some Wrestling and/or Judo experience; and this was not only in Sao Paulo, but all over Brazil. A lesson began with Professor Pedro dividing the students into small groups. First, two or three techniques or scenarios were repeated in a standing position. This went on until he saw that the techniques and corresponding variations were performed fluently and flawlessly. He was of the opinion, "...now that you are tired, you will surely do what I want to see on the ground!" The students were always put together so that everyone would feel comfortable with their training partners. Rarely would a beginner get a training partner that was too heavy (or stronger), as he wanted the students to practice slowly, accurately, and most importantly, without injury to each other, "...to be fast, anyone can do that!" he once said, "...but exactly only a very few!" In class with Professor Pedro, the goal was to learn to defend oneself, not to fight another Jiu-Jitsu student. His classes were geared for defense in a street situation. For example, when training the "guard escape", it was also always important to remember that you could defend yourself with a kick to the opponent's head or body. This "street and practice oriented" Jiu-Jitsu was Professor Pedro's specialty, as he had also successfully won many "ValeTudo" (traditional MMA fights) in his younger years.

Sport Jiu-Jitsu is gaining popularity... When now also in Sao Paulo more BJJ tournaments are organized, and from this also several BJJ associations arise, I asked him once what he would think of it, and there the answer was direct and clear: "...these (new) techniques are nothing for the street!" In his Jiu-Jitsu, with or without kimono, whenever possible you attacked the opponent directly and not his clothes. His Jiu-Jitsu was an efficient and systematic "Vale-Tudo". The kimono was there to catch the training sweat and not to do any (artistic) techniques. He aimed at the efficiency of each technique and the impact. Each visit of a student to his academy was properly used. Thus, at the entrance, at the reception, one was asked whether one came for a lesson or for the "open" training. This meant that whoever came to learn techniques went into the lesson, and whoever came for (open) training, on the other hand, had come for randori (fighting). Not everyone was interested in randori, because those who fought here were often top fighters, and please believe me, no one wanted to enter the training without having a good basis. In the "technical" lessons, Professor Pedro focused on the repetition of the techniques, but not as it is done in "drilling". Drilling as it is known in other BJJ, Judo and Wrestling schools was not the right way for him to learn or memorize a technique. When repeating a technique, he emphasized that we would always do the technique in its entirety, just as we would in combat. In drills, on the other hand, often only the approach is trained, so not always the correct and whole execution of the technique. He also wanted us to always have the position under control. Another important point was that during the repetition, the technique was done slowly and accurately, without mistakes and without gaps, as he always emphasized to me.

From father to son, from teacher to student.... The classes with Professor Pedro were very strict and exhausting, even though he represented a Jiu-Jitsu to appeal to the masses. As I mentioned, the class structure was a given: you started with self-defense from a standing position and then you moved over to ground techniques. This structure was adopted by all masters of authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, from the first generation on. The goal was to give the student a solid foundation, just as a father would teach his son. Fighting, on the other hand, developed with randoris and competitions. Within the Gracie family, the children were very early divided into two groups: the athlete / fighter and the coach / teacher. When I first entered the academy of Master Hemetério, I knew immediately that here was taught the true Gracie JiuJitsu and not the (sport) Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Hanging on the wall, a knife, a stick, and a gun, these were all tools not seen in other BJJ schools. During my training period with Professor Pedro, I met some advanced students, among them was Aloisio Costa (Filho), who unfortunately died in an accident in 1998. I think this was a great loss for Professor Pedro since he had taught him from childhood. I can still vaguely remember Luciano Ribeiro, who later moved to Gracie Humaita. Professor Luciano had also trained with Professor Costa for a very long time and was considered his right-hand man.
