Gladius Signum is the result of many years of study and practice in different combat systems, both melee and armed confrontation. It was born out of the need to have a coherent system adapted to today's needs, covering the broad spectrum of situations in which both civilians and security forces can be involved. Developed from highly tested and functional systems, Gladius Signum collects, creates and unites the best of each one to make them available to the plaintiff with a clear objective, efficiency in the face of hostile aggression. At the same time, it is subdivided into different branches, to provide training only for what is considered necessary for the student. From the hand of its creators, Sergio Verdeguer and Pedro Muñoz, we will study in detail the eliminations, precombat, empty hand vs knife, free confrontation, transitions armed hand to empty hand, combat applications, types of knife grip and its uses and different types of knife. A coherent and adaptable system, following both behavioral patterns, biomechanics and universal principles of combat.

Grand Master Martin Sewer presents in this work a complete course of Bak Hok Pai, the style of the white crane. The crane is an elegant animal. With its white feathered robe, one moment it stands like a ruler, guarding its territory. The next moment, it flaps its wings and moves forward at lightning speed. Although everyone has a clear picture of this graceful creature in their mind, most find it difficult to imagine this great bird in a fight. How does a crane actually fight when threatened? Like all animal styles, the crane style was created by studying the animal's strategies and tactics during a fight and transferring them to humans. This also gave rise to the five animal styles that have stood the test of time and are taught in my school today: Tiger, Crane, Snake, Leopard and Dragon. Mastering all these animal styles and the elements that go with them makes one a perfect human being, say the legends of Kung Fu, and it is naturally part of the philosophy of a true warrior to want to constantly improve and achieve perfection. Although the knowledge/skill of the five animals belongs to advanced levels, four of the mentioned styles are even accessible to beginners in the form of seminars. In them, eager students not only get a deeper insight into our Hung Gar, but also learn the first fighting techniques of the respective animal style, and the most common comment is: "I would not have thought that these techniques could be so efficient...!".

ecent events have brought the shamans of the Hagumo people to the forefront of my life. Called Shizen (naturals) by the Japanese, also known as the forests "demons" (Oni) of Northern Japan, they developed a strong and extraordinarily complex spiritual culture known as Ochikara to the Japanese, and called e-bunto by the "naturals". Its shamans, as in so many other cultures, were a central piece in the development of their own building and identity. Chosen from birth, it is said that all the children were thrown into the river. Those who struggled to get out became warriors, but the few who simply allowed themselves to sink without a fight were targeted for the priesthood service of the invisible. They understood that those spirits were so tied to the world of the dead, that they were simply willing to return to them without a fight. From childhood, they were trained as apprentices and, in addition to the knowledge they were acquiring under the tutelage of their elders, they were initiated into specific rites among their class. Miryoku were not generally stocky, like Plowmen or Warriors. Their austere way of life, exposed to continuous personal sacrifices, formed that dry, severe character, which was combined much better in their lean bodies. The nature of their practices as intermediaries between two worlds, led them to move away from personal contact or commitment and, of course, from women. Although it was common for them to have helpers and concubines, they were reluctant to lose semen, as they considered it one of the "rivers" in which their strength resided. Their training would nowadays be considered true torture, because to invoke all the forces, they had to know them well. When they shaped the water, they should know everything about it; when the fire, their bodies should give off heat; when the wind, every pore of their skin should bristle; when the earth, its warm fermented smell, its rough touch, its immutability, should be written in blood and fire in their memory. To capture "fear" they had to feel it to the point of paroxysm, so those who feared the dark were consequently

locked in caves, those who felt a phobia of snakes, were hung by their feet with a bag full of them on their heads. The Miryoku discovered that the limits of the human are only a group consensus. They discovered that the invisible constantly interacts with the visible in such a way that they are intertwined, and that the spiritual world and the gross world feed in both directions, one with energy, the other with tension. Studying life and death, they discovered that everything responds to large fractals and that these have a distinctive nature, capable of being treated and manipulated when their secrets are known. In this way, these shamans naturally carried out their work in various areas, health and disease, magic, manipulation of forces, and mediation with the spirit world. They were consulted by the villagers, by the chiefs and warriors, and since much of their history was under constant pressure from enemies always greater, their arts were forced to achieve enormous sophistication and accuracy, because not in vain the survival of their culture came to depend many times on their abilities. By continually challenging the mystery, they became arrogant, as their power of action defied all natural limits. Capable of Herculean spiritual achievements, they knew that they could open any heaven or hell without being disturbed by it. They developed an impartial spirit in the face of good and evil, because they understood that what it was good for some was simply bad for others; everything was just a conjunction of differentiated forces, forces that, in their hands, changed direction. They were so feared by enemy warriors that when captured, their hands were cut off. Respect was maximum among their people; when a Miryoku passed along the way, everyone'd put their head on the ground as a sign of respect. Cunning and sibylline, austere and lovers of the secret on which their art was based, they trained few apprentices, for long periods, subjecting them to the harshest tests at dawn, known as Sorobeiji. Only those who had been targeted by Tengu were then initiated into their arcana, which included the hidden names of all things, the ordering of natural and supernatural forces.

They established guidelines and routes to interact with terrifying forces, which they learned to treat with the same respect as those more enlightened. They acceded the hidden hierarchies of each universe and kingdom that made up the world, not a few were lost in such stalking to the invisible. They formed closed brotherhoods that met to discuss major issues, or to plunge into the unknown in an empirical and contrasted way. The Miryoku detested doubt and liked to take everything to the extreme, only then could they access information impossible for the rest of mortals. Their lust for knowledge took them for centuries to unthinkable places, in the face of forces much greater than themselves and with an inhuman detachment. Their clumsy dress dressing came from their lack of interest in the social. They lived supported by the village, or later by a Shogun or Daimyo. Carnal pleasures, prestige or money, were worthless before their only obsession: power. A business where not even the lords they served had any influence, as they knew that other much greater lords were their protectors, and when Tengu spoke, there was no man who could buy or frighten them. This position frequently put them at risk, as those they served with their knowledge often decided to end them later, realizing that their power was uncontrollable. For the great lords, those who promoted them could later decide otherwise; they were loose verses that had to be used and when the time came, put an end to them. All this sculpted even more in their character that distrustful personality that characterized them and that love for secrecy, so typical of their elusive nature. With a deep and challenging gaze, their eyes were freezing fires that penetrated the soul of people, exposing their most hidden secrets, even those they hid from themselves. When the villages were decimated and destroyed, a few survived and turned into travelers, they took their knowledge through the roads of Japan, rediscovering the Hagumo who remained in the diaspora to reorganize their culture. These wandering priests were

known in Japanese as Kotoma Tonbo, the wandering dragonflies, as they were born and died every day, without ever establishing themselves in a fixed way. The Tonbo class further developed its tools and adapted the knowledge of the Miryoku to their new condition and purposes, within the framework of a new conception of the spiritual world, less attached to the cultural constraints of the Miryoku, but much more expeditious still. They had access to other places and contact with other forces, other cultures, and all this further enriched their knowledge and skills. While the Miryoku depended on their settlements for their magic, the Tonbo had been "made" with all of them in their own body, in such a way that this was in itself a settlement that encompassed all forces. Dead and reborn like Tonbo, they carried everything they needed to use their magic wherever they went. The Hagumo class of warlocks, sorcerers and priests, known as Miryoku, is essential to understanding Shizen culture. Their daring and capacity for sacrifice carved paths in the invisible with a titanic audacity and detachment. Without them, the e-bunto would not have existed nor would the Shizen culture have survived to this day. In life, they were respected for it and feared by all. His was a generally lonely path, but his loneliness was not comparable to that of other humans, nor should it be the cause of any sympathy in the usual parameters. They always knew that they were accompanied by an invisible army, whose existence was much more present than that of the material or consensual world. In permanent contact with the imperishable, death for them acquired a different value, because in the end, as in the beginning, they were always ready to embrace it. The heritage of the Miryoku class is so vast and immeasurable as it is daring and boastful, and the arrogance that pursued them in life is an essential ingredient to understand both their nature and their achievements, since they knew how to look into the abyss and keep their gaze steady, when the abyss finally returned it to them.

Science in Martial Arts From the very beginnings of their conscious actions and the desire to know more about the reality that surrounds them, people gained various experience, knowledge and beliefs. This was all done in order to survive, stemming from the fear of the unknown and the fear of death. Later, in order to predict and forecast different phenomena and the development of future events, to understand nature and to gain knowledge about its complex processes, man developed certain methods and techniques to acquire that same proven knowledge. Knowledge according to the origin of the word, means "something that was already seen”, i.e. a term that denotes understanding of a certain thing as well as being instructed on how to address it. Knowledge can also include one's insight into that thing and a methodological gain of that same knowledge is called science. Science (in Greek "episteme” means understanding, cognition, study; in Latin "scientia”; in English and French "science”; in German "Wissenschaft”) is an organized system of general human knowledge gained by observing actions and events in nature and society and then processed in a rational, scientifically- proven methods. Determining the term science and its contents, general methods and various methods of scientific investigation resulted in several different definitions of science. As one of many, it is possible to give a general definition of science – "Science is comprised of knowledge, scientific cognition and gaining knowledge by applying scientific methods.” According to this definition, scientific terms denote science as a collection of gained knowledge, methods, techniques, systems of beliefs and courses of exploration in the general scientific branch. Based on those courses, science can be divided into areas that gain cognition about the objective reality as well as on components that are directed towards examining specific segments of that same reality.

rom the very beginnings of martial arts, people gradually gained and collected many useful knowledge. Step by step, they acquired knowledge about how the human body functions as well as about natural phenomena that surrounded them. By often searching for new methods of collecting new data and checking old knowledge, they gradually enriched their experiences and skills with different scientific methods. Also, the knowledge that was acquired in such a way, i.e. such "science” wasn't just a collection of knowledge, but also a way of thinking about and observing reality – coming up with new theories. This type of cognition is based on reason, logics, critique, doubt and objective, free and independent thinking. Thanks to the existence of science, the people's desire is to explain, check and assess their knowledge and its main characteristics are: objectivity, methodology, argument (authentication), logics and precision. Theory defines basic terms and principles of some scientific disciplines such as the totality of assigned methods and the control of the theory itself. Once the theories of individual scientific disciplines can be encircled into one broader (but still a specifically defined) theory, those same scientific disciplines are classified into specific scientific areas, fields and branches. Today, we have several existing scientific areas, e.g. natural sciences, medical sciences, social sciences, science of art, humanities, agriculture, technical sciences etc. According to those divisions, martial arts fall within a specific human skill, as art, but also as

Reportage science, i.e. a component to various scientific fields. Martial arts are a part of science that researches how the human body functions during exercize and how physical activity and sport improve our health and our working abilities, from the cellular to the general bodily perspective. Through scientific endeavor, people developed a greater understanding about how the human body reacts to exercising martial arts in different settings. Also, it looks at how exercising martial arts affects the body in its desire in gaining knowledge and practice in the discipline. That research helps martial arts masters to use their acquired knowledge, skills and facts in order to help people improve their martial arts knowledge and to adapt them to their own needs.

In turn, martial arts masters convey their knowledge and experience from self-defense. They pass on their knowledge and demonstrate their skills in various martial arts. Also, they share their knowledge and experience because they want to improve general knowledge in warrior-military purposes as well as to improve sportsmen's martial arts capacities, as well as other needs in sports training.

Martial Arts as a Part of a Scientific Discipline The fight for survival forced man to develop his physical abilities from ancient times. In the cruel and rough fight for survival, our ancient ancestor had to defend himself and attack. In their desire to become skilled, many individuals exercised different martial arts and tended to show their skills and capacities in competitions that were a part of various gatherings and ceremonies. Throughout the centuries, man has gained martial experience and has accumulated it in order to apply it later on in different conflicts and fights for life and death. We can say with great certainty that the self-defense skill as well as learning about martial arts and their application is as old as human

kind. There, so to say, almost isn't a country that doesn't have its own indigenous "authentic-folklore” style of fighting or some of the types of games that satisfy man's compulsive need to fight as a form of adaptation to the fight for survival. So, with great certainty, we can say that acquiring different martial arts knowledge is as old as humanity itself. From the onset of humanity, man has been exposed to fighting and different martial arts. By exercising and learning, he collects necessary knowledge and gradually acquires fighting experience which, later on, can be used in battle. Since antiquity, many individuals have tended to secure their knowledge in order to pass it on to younger generations. Because of that, many of it was saved thanks to oral tradition or writing sources and, if needed, by making drawings. Many historic legends were retold in this

Reportage way, the first books were made and a lot of knowledge was transmitted. Many masters, experts and martial arts lovers as well as educated people collected different knowledge in martial arts with a tendency to assess and check it in an objective and logical manner and, later on, to write it down precisely and methodically. All of that knowledge was collected thanks to different scientificallyacceptable methods. In order to collect as much knowledge as possible that could be objectively assessed and explained, their knowledge about martial arts was collected and explained by means of their knowledge of various domain of human interest, i.e. their knowledge in other scientific fields.

One of the more important scientific areas of collecting and explaining knowledge about martial arts today is known under the term "kinesiology”. Kinesiology means science about movement. Today, it is defined as a scientific area which researches the terms of controlling the process of exercise and the consequences of the functioning of these processes on the human organism which, most definitely, improves one's health. More recently, there almost isn't a country in the world that doesn't have a kinesiology course at its university within which students

Today, unfortunately, most of those universities don’t study the original martial arts disciplines (styles) as much as they should, but only study different martial arts for the needs of sportsmen. Martial arts uses natural sciences from the areas of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, Earth and environmental sciences, statistics and, in more recent times, there is a growing need of computer and information sciences. Martial arts masters use various knowledge such as different calculations (e.g. to measure a certain weapon), knowledge of how to assess weight of a certain object or weapon, how to calculate an angle under which a specific hit should be performed (with or without a weapon), knowing how to move in a linear or circular fashion (e.g. while performing a kata, form etc.), knowledge of how to manufacture a multiangle weapon (e.g. a octagonal nunchaku – hakkaku kei) or a different type of weapon, knowing how to compute and calculate the speed at which an object or an opponent is moving (in order to keep a safe distance), knowing how to calculate the speed at which a hit with an arm or leg will be performed (e.g. the boxer J. Dempsey hits with his arm at a speed of 218 km/h, whereas the master B. Wallace hits with is left leg at a speed of 98 km/h). This knowledge also entails the assessment of the speed at which a certain weapon is approaching (e.g. a throwing type of weapon), calculating the force of a certain punch (e.g. P = m x a), assessing the force of the punch at the point of the hit (e.g. a punch with an arm has the force of up to 500 kg) as well as the assessment of the time that is needed for a certain reaction – reflex (e.g. an average man has a reflex reaction that ranges from 0,8 to 0,6 sec, whereas the taekwondo master J. Hun Kun performes a hit within the timeframe of 0,4 sec and a leg kick starting from 0,3 sec). Also, the following knowledge from the areas of natural sciences is used, e.g. different calculations of the number of necessary exercises in specific segments that need to be performed during the training process, calculating the timeframe for performing specific actions that can be used in some sports during a round (during the fight), computing the necessary intensity of the training (e.g. calculating 180 heartbeats per minute for a sportsman who is performing a training of an intensity of 95-100%), performing a training outdoors in nature (e.g. performing a kata,

meditating under a waterfall etc.), navigating through nature, assessing atmospheric conditions, knowing about substances that are beneficial (e.g. certain foods, energy drinks etc.) or harmful for the human organism (e.g. doping substances, steroids, anabolics, the usage and manufacturing of different poisonous arrows etc.), knowledge about vitamins and minerals, using inner energy (using Chi energy), knowledge about healthy nutrition (nutritionism), computer and information science (e.g. using and collecting information over the Inter net, creating websites, performing online teaching etc.) as well as many other knowledge in scientific areas. One of the more important areas of collecting useful knowledge in martial arts are medical sciences. We should definitely put sports medicine at the top of the list (e.g. rehabilitation from sports injuries, usage of massages etc.), but importance also needs to be given to the knowledge in anatomy (knowledge about the human body), as well as physiology, genetics, pharmacy (basic knowledge in manufacturing various medicaments), pharmacology, hygiene, medical care and, in more recent times, epidemiology etc.

Reportage Knowledge in technical sciences and technology in general is also used in martial arts. Most often, those are metallurgy (manufacturing various weapons, e.g a katana), mechanics, construction, civil engineering and architecture (e.g. building fortifications – chikujo-jutsu) as well as many other skills from this scientific area. Knowledge of agricultural sciences is also used, e.g. agronomy, horticulture, veterinary sciences (e.g. knowledge of horseback riding, dressage and animal care, attacking and defending from animals etc.). One of the most important areas of collecting martial arts knowledge are most definitely social sciences such as psychology (sports or general psychology), economics, pedagogy, (knowledge about the education of children and adolescents), educational-rehabilitation sciences (knowledge in rehabilitating various health impairments) as well as, the already mentioned, kinesiology etc. In order to collect various knowledge in martial arts , the area of visual and performance arts is also used. Those are music, dance (having a sense of rhythm and movement, e.g. footwork in boxing), painting (making drawings), sculpture, film, comic book art etc. Knowledge in the area of humanities is also important: history (e.g. the history of sport or a certain martial art), archaeology, linguistics and literature, philosophy, art history, theology etc. All of these scientific areas are only a fraction of the overall knowledge that is used in martial arts. Of course, examples of those facts and the specific scientific areas are much more numerous. It is impossible to list all of those areas, but every researcher can explore and supplement this list as well as categorize those scientific areas according to the scienfic branch they belong to.

Reportage Mixed martial sciences By collecting different useful knowledge from the beginning of their very existence, people have come to the conclusion that accumulated knowledge as well as other theories that arose from them are part of science and, thus, a part of various scientific fields. This is how martial arts have often been connected to traditional Hindu, Mongolian, Chinese, Korean or Japanese medicine. They were also linked to different philosophical thoughts and religions. The most widely spread example is Buddhism which was connected and intertwined with some other philosophical – religious theories, such as

Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism, Zenism or Shinto. Various philosophical – religious knowledge and theories were embedded in the foundations of different martial arts' codes of honor. Many fans and masters of martial arts, philosophers, doctors, monks, soldiers and other educated people tirelessly collected their knowledge and observations about those disciplines and, later on, made records and saved them for future generations. This is how the first notes, drawings, brochures and, later when possible, the first books about different martial arts were made. The gained and collected knowledge wasn't transferred and spread among people, but was closely guarded. China is an example where certain collected knowledge was transferred exclusively among members of a family, i.e. inside specific martial arts schools.

Reportage Sometimes this was done among monks within the confines of their monasteries or in some military units. In India and Japan, a part of the martial arts knowledge was exclusively shared among specific kastas, i.e. in single military groups or classes and their accompanied clans. The knowledge in martial arts that was shared with you was forbidden to be conveyed to other enemy clans, other martial arts schools, foreigners or uninformed people, i.e. people that didn't have the capacity to understand that scope of knowledge and

theory. This was especially true when one knew that such a person could, sooner or later, master certain "deadly" martial arts skills and techniques. Even up until recently, in some famous martial arts schools and centers from around the world applied very strict rules on transmitting knowledge. For example, the Kodokan Institute (a center for teaching judo, founded in 1882 by J. Kano) implied rules that regulated the transfer of knowledge brought in 1882 and reconfirmed in 1884. These rules are known

Reportage as a set of 5 oath from the Kodokan Institute. A similar thing happened to certain Chinese, Hindu, Mongolian, Korean and even some European martial arts schools. We can mention fencing schools in France and Spain or knifefighting knowledge from the South of Italy etc. Also, similar rules on the prohibition of the transfer of knowledge in certain martial arts were valid in other martial arts schools or centers around the world (e.g. the knowledge in capoeira in Brazil). Among various styles, e.g. in China, the

transmission of martial arts knowledge was considered to be one of the biggest secrets. The person that would give away this kind of secret and break the unwritten rule of transfer of knowledge in certain martial arts would be severely punished, sometimes even to death. Only by the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century were some rules about the transfer of knowledge gradually disregarded and so, various limitations in the transfer of martial arts knowledge were

Today, many specialized books and various magazines are filled with a vast amount of knowledge about martial arts thanks to the scientific methods that have collected and processed them. Although martial arts have been considered as science or a part of science from a long time ago, the very word

Reportage "science” was mentioned in martial arts terms as late as the 20th century. More precisely, in 1936, a martial arts master and the founder of judo, Jigoro Kano, wrote in a letter to Gunji Koizumi "Judo can be a sport, but, before anything else, judo is a skill, a lifestyle and science.” Later, Kano repeated this same opinion several times as well as near the end of his life in 1938. Unfortunately, from many things that Kano introduced in martial arts (e.g. a white kimono, ranking i.e. title, black belt etc.) the word "science” is most neglected in martial arts. Also, if we are to agree with the conclusion that judo is a science or a part of science, then we can say that other martial arts styles (e.g. karate, ju-jitsu, aikido, tae kwon do, boxing, fencing, wrestling etc.) also belong to a scientific branch, i.e. are science. Thanks to his inexhaustible thirst for knowledge and a frequent search for knowledge about a certain martial art, every true master is also a connoisseur, i.e. has gained certain knowledge in martial arts. This is why many experts

and martial arts masters have titles and knowledge in several martial arts styles that they are familiar with. Most often, those are similar martial arts disciplines, although that doesn't have to be the case. For example, many excellent judo masters are familiar with certain techniques in ju-jutsu, aikido, wrestling, sambo, karate or some other skill that implies using a weapon. Also, top karate or tae kwon do masters are very familiar with ju-jutsu, aikido, judo, kick boxing, kung fu or have some knowledge in handling weapons etc. Even boxing masters, fencers or wrestlers are well familiar with other martial arts. This is, of course, due to one's own personal interests and, while some masters can have knowledge in a lot of fields, many are not that well-acquainted with other martial arts disciplines (styles). Because of the vast amount of different martial arts knowledge, we can come to the conclusion that many former and current martial arts masters were or are also experts in - mixed martial sciences.

Training: experience makes the difference The idea is that of offering a unique EXPERIENCE in Personal Defense and make the client benefit from the EXPERIENCE of its creator and the trainers of the concept A concept and a training methodology more than ever connected to the world of combat sports. The "tools" of combat sports and, more specifically, those of Burmese boxing, aka LETHWEI, constitute the core of the combat program of the "R.E.D. Training" methodology. Indeed, I've long been convinced that combat sports and exercises that allow practitioners to develop their determination are and should continue to be one of the priorities in Self Defense teaching. However, it is important to remember that, in order to allow the greatest number of people to practice a highly committed self-defense discipline such as R.E.D. Training, it's necessar y to have a true pedagogical exper tise (associated with progressive work and surrounded by adapted safety regulations), all at a very high intensity and with maximum realism!

Christian Wilmouth hen I designed the R.E.D. Training, as always, pragmatism guided my decisions. It’s not about showing off with athletic or technical qualities in order to make people "dream", or demonstrating a thousand different techniques. Since the creation of this methodology, I find it almost totally impossible to do a "demonstration" (as you can see in other disciplines during the celebration of various events) because, visually, the realization of our practical exercises leaves no room for any aesthetic aspect of the fight... The declared objective of this concept is to provide people who are really interested in self-defense, solutions in line with the reality of the ground ... and this reality is not usually "pretty" ... When I teach the R.E.D. Training system, my goal is also to remember that when faced with the different problems of an attack against a certain individual, the technical sequences and the fantastic strategies that are often proposed in the world of self-defense do not work. The "combat experience" and mastery of the "tools" of combat sports are a must if you want to face a violent situation in a degraded context.

Understanding the choice of integrating a combat sport: Example: why the choice of Lethwei for the R.E.D. training methodology? This discipline has always been practiced with bare hands, and this specificity made us interested in the protection methods and replicas to be used. Burmese boxing matches do not have a point system to separate opponents. Only the opponent's KO or Abandon allow the win, and this pushes the fighters to develop effective percussion "tools". Lethwei, in its traditional form of fighting, has very few rules regarding hitting options and hitting zones, which makes it the discipline most connected to the context of violent street opposition, where there are no rules. For 4 decades, Patrick Levet has been involved in the propagation of Vietnamese martial culture. It is now time to move on to a more precise and detailed description of this form of combat, but also of its various forms of evolution which are the Vật de Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo and the Vật de Vovinam Integral. With this new DVD, Vietnamese Vat is presented in a completely new way. Jeet Kune Do Interception Intercepting a strike may seem easy, but in reality, this skill requires dedicated and specific training. To be efficient, all aspects of the interception process have to be mastered. Otherwise, the gesture will be useless in preventing the opponent’s attack to reach its target. At this point, it will be even more difficult to intercept the next strike, because the opponent will have a serious psychological edge. Each time somebody gets hit by a significant strike, that persons not only receive a physical impact but also a psychological impact which affects the victim’s confidence. These doubts will affect his or her capacity to actually succeed in intercepting attacks, making it even more complicated to try intercepting the next strikes. And gradually this fear and loss of selfconfidence will benefit the opponent. Practitioners of our disciplines often forget than they can be hit and do not prepare the eventuality of failure. Most people think that they can block or intercept any attack, comparing themselves to Sijo Bruce Lee or Sifu Dan Inosanto. But the truth is that nobody can block or intercept every strike.

Jeet Kune Do eing hit is going to happen, and this will generate doubts. The real challenge is to overcome these doubts and stay able to hit back and to take back the upper hand despite being hit. A boxer is preparing for this from his very first training session: reality is both giving and taking punches. And when taking a couple punches is no longer a disturbing surprise, the focus can switch to improve protection, defense and riposte to regain control of the fight. Of course, there is no certainty in this, but at least the boxer has been trained for it and has better chances of success.

This is not so true in other martial arts, and especially in Jeet Kune Do. People get frustrated as soon as they receive one or two hits. In my opinion, this is related to the fiction people develop around action movies. In the movies, only the “bad boss” can really hurt the “good guy”. The other minor “bad guys” barely threaten the hero, and this creates an absurd fantasy of invincibility for the practitioners. How many times can we read or watch in a video that the finger jab is the best weapon, and when using it the opponent is necessarily disabled. In reality, using a finger jab implies first to train the fingers in order to use them

Jeet Kune Do without getting hurt. Then, it is possible to miss the target, eyes or throat, especially because the opponent will not nicely wait and stand still. We should remember that in combat the opponent will be sending multiple strikes that we have to avoid, before we can even try to use the famous finger jab. This is going to be much more difficult than during complacent training. Adding the stress factor and the necessity to manage the right distance, avoiding or defending against disabling strikes affecting our physical and emotional capacity, and staying clear headed enough to efficiently land our intercepting strike will be most challenging. The stress factor is what prevents most interceptions to work, and it must not be underestimated. We also must accept, and honestly admit, that a so called “decisive hit” might have absolutely no effect. Some opponents may endure multiple hits to the eyes, throat or groin with no immediate reaction. This insensitivity has been observed for people under drugs, alcohol, or unstable psychic condition. Of course, the next day will be a different story and the consequences will be felt when the person is no longer cushioned against these “vital areas strikes” … but that’s too late: the strikes have not been effective to slow down the opponent during the aggression. Face to these difficulties, only the determination to adapt, to try other ways to intercept, and to target different vital areas, may result in stopping the strikes and the aggression. There is no such thing as invincibility. What might work is precision and commitment: in order to intercept properly, we need to “get in” and commit our body into the interception, not try to hit and get away at the same time. This needs some explanation.

Jeet Kune Do Let’s take for example “Loy Da”, which is a counter on a lead jab by hitting with the fingertips (finger jab) to the throat or to the eye. Often while training, people do not practice with the adequate form: they try to avoid the jab leaning back or on the side. This is detrimental to precision and prevent the right application of power for an efficient interception. Intercepting needs a good timing but first and foremost determination. It is necessary to commit body and mind in the action and accept the risk to be countered, since the

opponent is not likely to let us do as we want and will keep blocking and hitting. This leads us to consider the training for interception, which is often neglected. The usual practice is to work against a single strike, supposedly because we expect to intercept the very first attack. This barely reflects the situation of a real fight, with multiple strikes raining down. It is unlikely to think we can manage a correct interception if we have not developed this capacity to endure getting hit, defend, move, refocus and be able to try intercepting

Guro Delannoy again. This is the part of the training which is so often neglected, but which can teach us how to adapt our riposte to overwhelming aggressive striking. I believe that this part of the training is often voluntarily omitted, because it can open the eyes of students on their non-invincibility, and on their lack of capacity to place an interception while under pressure. When discovering the limits of the technique some students leave the club for another discipline. This is what in reality many teachers are

avoiding, because they cannot financially afford losing students. But martial arts and fighting sports should be a way to better know ourselves, to discover our limits and what kind of fighters we are. Dismissing the reality with the wrong training will not protect the practitioner, and will even be dangerous when the truth about interception limits is discovered during competition or in a real-life situation.

Jeet Kune Do Regarding competition, teachers may object that due to all the rules, the interception techniques used cannot be properly applied, making them less efficient. This is a bad excuse to hide the real difficulty to place an effective interception counter, especially with success on each try. There is no 100% success striking or countering technique. Failure is part of the training, and learning to react to failure will definitely help to save our live in a street fight. Losing a fight during a competition is not such a big deal,

and can be positive. This is an opportunity to question ourself and to improve for next time. But in the street, there may not be a second chance. This is why it is so important to be realistic and true about our capacity to intercept efficiently. For animals, being true regarding their skills is paramount for their survival. The gazelle does not attack the lioness. The gazelle flees. Excepted maybe to defend it’s young, it will never attack without any good reason, and will never jeopardize its precious life.

Movies are only movies, and real-life aggressions are very different and, well, real. The real fighter only fights when there is no other option: protect himself or herself, and the loved ones. The more sincere we are regarding our real skill level, the more chances we have to stay alive.

Parents are sometimes scared to put their child into Martial Arts. I am not talking only about Jiu-Jitsu, but this is in general, and it may also be regardless from which country they are coming, in which religion they believe. Fortunately, most make great experience and once the kids get into the true spirit of Martial Arts, parents realize the importance of their step and kids will enjoy if they have the right support from the parents and trainers.

I grow up with Martial Arts. I started not because of the interest in fighting, but because I had a lack of self-confidence and self-esteem as a young boy. I end up first into Judo, I changed to Wing Chun KungFu, and later to Muay Thai under Ajarn (Grandmaster) Surachai “Chai” Sirisute, who unlocked me the doors of many other Asian and European martial arts and combat sports. I enjoyed competing in combat sports, but I remember that not everyone at my age liked it, and I so many of my same age training mates living the school just after short training period, because the part of “fighting” was just not made for them.

or me “playing fighting” was not something bad, not in our family. I was fighting all the time with my twoyear younger brother, and sometimes I was winning and other times I was losing. This made me understood, that age does not matter… sometimes you have a good day, sometimes you have a less good day – accept it and walk on! We got use to become more sensible and I believe also, that through “playing fighting”, we become very aware about true danger in life in general. We learned also to feel our bodies in a different way. Pain got a different “status” and not to be scared from the “unknown” helped us to gain higher self-confidence and self-esteem. With the passing of the years, the aspect of sport competition became less, but not the fact that Martial Arts is giving me a lot of different benefits in life. My objective changed during the years, and training in Jiu-Jitsu always offered me some new interesting, positive, and constructive Life challenges. As a young man, I understood how to use the “basic principles” of Martial Arts in my working place, and in my family life. It was also a substitute sometimes of my religion. That may sound wired to you, but in some cases I found better answers in Martial Arts, then in many other thinks around me. I agree in part of it, that all sports can give to your child benefits regarding certain aspects, but in martial arts it is something proven that the benefits are much more than just the one that a sport can give you. Martial Arts gives you the capacity to survive a situation.

Martial Arts supposed to train you to be ready not only to overcome a situation. In Jiu-Jitsu, at least the (Gracie Way) we teach, is straight to the point, because by experience we know that confrontation under high pressure, mentally and physically, must be realistic and efficient. The Jiu-Jitsu men / women learns to know very well their body and mental state, because in fighting (in a self-defense situation) the body will need much more than just technique and tactic. Something that we also train intensively is to control our emotions. If you cannot control your emotions, you will be overwhelmed by yourself. Handle stress is very important, and that is not only in a fight, but in your life! When I talk to my students about emotions is interesting, because as soon I use the word “emotions”, you can see on their faces that they think that I will talk now about feelings, but when I talk about emotions, in this specific case, is about situations that really can happen in a street fight.

The hidden Benefits of training Jiu-Jitsu… Why should you train in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu? Why should your child join Jiu-Jitsu instead of a team sport like Soccer or Basketball? The reason are multiples and for everyone individual. For competition enthusiast it is a great combat sport, with no age limit, and for women and men alike. Forget about medals and belts, they are there – but not your main goal. Long for long-term goals, rather than just your next championship title, which of course is also ok – for your short goals, at least the way I see it. Jiu-Jitsu can guarantee to influence your life positively. Your body and mind will be trained at the same time, and you will feel great, after every training. This is not only due to the physical aspect of it. It will help you to put thinks in a better order and give you the tools to understand what is essential in life. I have at least mention flexibility and mobility when we talk about physical benefits. There are some enormous physical benefits of training Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in general. So yes, injuries area part of the sport as well, but the benefits of mobility certainly outweigh the small knocks we pick up along the way. It is important to train with people that are aware about it and will also take care when training a bit

You will learn on how important instead of is breathing, not only to have enough power to overcome your opponent, but also to learn on how to control yourself and your emotions. Aikijujutsu and the Energy Axis (Part 2) Crossing the Axes in Aikijujutsu Aikijujutsu practitioners know that observing the enemy’s axis of attack is the great strategy for an "Aiuchi" response, that is, attacking at the s a m e t i m e a s t h e e n e m y. Obser ving his movement and knowing the exact moment to neutralize his energy is one of the first principles that must be learned if everything else is to succeed. For many, the anticipation in "de-ai" provides a better imbalance of the opponent. Well... For me, they are two ways that provide a good r e v e r b e r a t i o n o f e n e r g y, especially if the opponent's axis is centered and his energy placed down below.

y Newton's first law, if the net force on a body is nil, the only possible motion states are those of constant speed (including nil). Changing from one state to another, with another speed, is only possible if the body is under the action of a non-zero resultant force. By Newton's second law, due to a nonzero resultant force, the velocity of the body varies faster the lower its mass (considered constant). Thus, mass measures the inertia of the body. When considering rotational motions, it is more appropriate to describe the inertia of a body by the moment of inertia and the state of motion by the angular momentum. Then, Newton's second law guarantees that, if the moment of inertia is kept constant, the change from one state to another, with different angular momentum, can only occur if there is a non-zero resultant external couple on the body. If the moment of inertia is not constant, a change in angular momentum occurs even though the resulting external torque is zero. This, in Aikijujutsu, occurs when the weight is down. In this case, when the axis is not centered, the energy oscillates from top to bottom; oscillating means moving from side to side, moving alternately in opposite directions, moving, passing again (at least approximately) by the same positions.

An old master said that in a movement within an opposite axis, when this comes from a swift attack, one must stick to the Unko opposite circle, so that it becomes uniform in relation to its energy. It would be the same as saying that a particle that moves back and forth around a given point is in an oscillatory motion. Periodic means that it repeats itself at regular intervals. A particle that moves back and forth around a fixed point, and for which the motion is identically repeated at equal time intervals, is in oscillatory periodic motion. Studying movement seems, therefore, something like a better understanding of the world in which we live. The first studies in Physics were related to the study of movement. Among the most renowned scholars of movement or Dynamics stand out Galileo Galilei (15641642) and Isaac Newton (1642-1727), the founders of Classical Physics. To begin our study of movement we must focus on a very important aspect related to any type of movement;

that is, for an object to acquire movement it is necessary for another object to transfer a certain amount of movement to it. However, the transfer of a quantity of movement can be done in several ways, among them, we can highlight the following: an object that is already in motion encounters a second immobile object and transfers part or all of it to it, of its "movement". For example, when a moving billiard ball collides with an initially immobile ball, the latter begins to move. Similarly, we can establish a similar thinking in the motions where fluidity depends on the action of an opponent, that is, the compound void.

In the case described above, the following situations can occur (consider a well-polished table): (a) If the first ball has the same mass as the second, the former one will stop after the impact and its speed will pass to the second ball. In this case, we say that all the "movement" of the first ball has been transferred to the second. (b) If the first ball has less mass than the second, the first ball moves backwards and the second one acquires movement. Imagine, for example, a shopping cart crashing into a wall and coming back. (c) If the first ball has a mass greater than the

second, the first continues with part of its "movement" and the second acquires the "rest of the movement" of the first, and both will have the same direction of movement of the first before the collision. When we find the void in that first force, not allowing the collision, and allow its inertia to continue, we establish the condition of thought to use the force of the adversary against itself. In our case, the well polished table board would be a uniform and fluid movement, where there are no

interruptions related to the start and end of the movement. Contrary to simple emptiness, many masters preferred to call emptiness full and absent. In this particular case, we say that the greater the mass of the first, the greater the speed of the second after the collision. To make it clearer, imagine that a motorcycle and a truck, both with the same speed, collide with a touring car wheel. In which case does the wheel initially stopped acquire higher speed? Or, the motorcycle, with a different speed, now collides with the wheel of the car, and in the second collision the speed of the motorcycle is greater than in the first. In which of the two cases will the wheel get faster? It's evident that the greater the mass of a body that collides with a second body, the greater the speed obtained by it. Similarly, the higher the speed of the first body, the higher the speed of the second one. In the case of the movement I am referring to, finding this void is also allowing this energy to not stagnate. The analysis of the previous cases reveals that the momentum of a body is related to its amount of mass and the value of its speed. The greater the product of mass and velocity, the greater its ability to transfer "motion" to a second body. In addition, a greater amount of mass compensates for a low speed, and consequently a small mass can compensate for a high speed in a collision. This compensation of mass and speed can be understood as a product, that is, the greater the product of mass times the speed of a body, the greater its ability to transfer motion to another body. In Mechanics, this product is defined as the Amount of Motion of a body, or simply Momentum. Generally, we need to introduce a vector character to some magnitudes, for example: speed, displacement, force, etc. This is necessary to give a more specific characterization of the magnitude in relation to the origin of the analysis reference. Therefore, it is not enough to specify only the magnitude (numerical value in relation to the origin), but it is necessary to specify the direction and the sense of this magnitude.

For example, when we ask a person where a certain place is, it's not enough for him to tell us only the distance (magnitude) of our displacement ("... a hundred meters from here, two blocks ..."), we need to know in which direction we should go ("... in this street, in the next one, in the parallel to this one ..."), and, in addition, in which direction we should go, if it's to the right, to the left, etc. The representation of a vector quantity, or simply vector, can be differentiated from a scalar quantity by the inclusion

of an arrow to its symbol and, geometrically, a vector can be represented by an arrow that directly gives the direction and the sense and whose length measures the magnitude of the vector. In the case of an Aikijujutsu movement in which the technique is started through a footstep, the stopped energy does not correspond to a compound vacuum but to a simple vacuum. In the case of movement, it is easier to steer through the explanation above.

Already in the simple vacuum, we introduce the idea of force to the movements, however, we know that for the beginning of a movement in a body, there will always be an applied force associated with its movement. In addition, the greater the change in the amount of movement that we want to acquire, the greater the force to apply in a considerable interval of time. The musubi is the one who will distinguish the change in directional force. As an example, imagine a car with a dead battery. To start this car, it is necessary that one or more people apply a considerable force for a certain time so that a good

variation of the amount of movement of the car takes place as quickly as possible. It is impossible for this force to be applied without the musubi. That is, that it is tied, together, tied to one another. We say that an object varied its amount of movement when its speed increased after a certain amount of time. For example, in the case of the car, as the car is being pushed, its speed is increased and, consequently, its movement amount is increased. Thus, we conclude that for an energy to flow in the form of a composite void, we first need a force exerted by the opponent.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. Muay Boran Muay Thai: is it just a striking martial art? Muay Thai is the Siamese art of unarmed fighting. The only “weapons” that are always available are our body parts, in particular: our hands, legs, knees, elbows and head. Siamese Muay has made the use of those natural weapons a true science: a Muay Thai stylist is trained to skilfully attack and defend using those natural weapons in hundreds of extremely efficient ways. Because of this, all martial arts fans consider Muay as a typical example of a “striking art”. A striking art is a fighting discipline whose techniques are focused on using power strikes as the main system to defeat an enemy/opponent. Most experts consider Muay Thai striking techniques as some of the best as far as explosive power and lethal efficiency is concerned.

Muay Boran his is surely true: however, there is much more. In fact, Muay has long history dating back several centuries. Along the years, this Art went through a series of transformations, going from a battlefield skill to a refined and well-regulated combat sport. The various versions of Muay before the great revolution of this style occurred around the year 1930, were not centered on striking only but consisted of multiple fighting strategies such as grabbing, locking, twisting and breaking the limbs or the neck of the opponent. Moreover, ancient Muay stylists had to be well prepared to defeat enemies using throws and finishing techniques applied once the opponent was on the ground. A few of these maneuvers are still in use in modern Thai Boxing but the introduction of boxing gloves and the strict regulations enforced during fights on the ring led to a progressive forsaking of the more combative tactics. On the

contrary, ancient Muay was rich in grappling techniques and strategies: one of the ancestral strategies used to dispatch enemies on the battlefield in combination with strikes, was to violently slam them to the ground. A follow up finishing technique was subsequently applied with a weapon (a sword), a stomping kick or a knee drop. As a matter of fact, throws can be a devastating tool in the hands of a properly trained Nak Muay (thai boxer). As the old adage says: the ground hits harder than any punch or kick. Furthermore, well executed throws can be annihilating both physically and psychologically. For all of these reasons all Muay Thai students should become well versed in throwing techniques, thus adding a precious skill to their “tools of the trade”.

Muay Boran A proper learning process starts with a good understanding of the underlying principles of Muay Thai throwing techniques. It is wise to remember that in the execution of almost all throwing maneuvers the executor has to go through 3 distinct phases: 1- The preparation 2- The execution 3- The follow up

As far as the preparation phase is concerned we have to distinguish between two starting situation: we are either the one who starts the action or we are defending the opponent’s attack and then we execute the throw as a counter maneuver. According to Muay Thai strategy, starting an offensive action with a throw is never the best choice. In fact, most of the times a Nak Muay’s attack starts with a leg or hand strike. On the contrary, when we are on the receiving end of an opponent’s attack, retaliating with a strike and/or a grab and a follow up throw, is a perfectly legitimate strategy for a Muay Thai stylist. The opponent’s possible offensive actions usually belong to one of these two broad families of attacks: strikes and holds.

Muay Boran If the opponent strikes, you have to control the attack in order to prepare the subsequent throw. You can parry the blow, counter strike and then grab the attacking limb or vice versa, you can catch the arm or leg of the opponent, strike back and then throw. Against holds, your primary concern must be to weaken the hold by striking or by applying a counter-hold. Sometimes your first strike is a “fake blow” meant to distract the opponent and allow you to defend the hold and apply your own grabbing technique, before following up with a throw. In Muay Thai, throws are mostly used against kicks, punches, elbow and knee strikes or as a counter to neck or body holds. a. Throws against kicks. Many times swing kicks are countered by catching the attacking leg and, according to the defender’s position, by off-balancing and throwing the opponent right away. Sometimes, after grabbing the leg a counter strike is executed before breaking the opponent’s balance. The counter is usually a head punch or a leg kick. In some special techniques a hard downward elbow aimed at the thigh muscle is applied to hurt the leg before the actual throw. Straight kicks are oftentimes grabbed, too: the best area to execute the grab is the

back of the ankle. In fact this part of the lower leg offers a perfect handle for a strong grip. Once the leg has been grabbed, you can follow up with a strike (knee blow or swing kick) or you can you choose to throw right away. In the latter case, you should lift the trapped leg, taking care if keeping it straight: this actions will prevent the opponent’s defence and break his balance instantly, making the throw much easier to execute. b. Throws against punches. Punches are much faster than kicks: therefore, catching a punch in order to throw is very difficult. As a matter of fact, it is almost impossible with boxing gloves on. However, when fighting barehanded, grabbing the opponent’s punching arm is possible and becomes a matter of specific

Muay Boran training and good reflexes. Round punches are easier to intercept, therefore many fighting strategies have been developed by Thai masters to execute throws against hooks or swings. If you want to grab the opponent’s arm when he attacks with a straight punch, you should quickly combine a parry and a counter blow before actually catching the limb and start the throw. c. Throws against holds. In Muay Thai two body areas are considered primary targets for holds: the neck and the trunk (waist or upper rib cage). Other body parts such as the arms or legs are secondary targets for a Nak Muay. When your opponent manages to get hold of your neck or waist area, you must react immediately by striking, stepping or applying a swift counter hold. As soon as your own hold is completed, you should waste no time and move your body to break the opponent’s balance and eventually throw him. The point in the wrist designated as L-8 (Lung 8), in acupuncture terminology. This point was selected due to the versatility in grappling as well as striking OR even kicking applications in both sport and reality with opponents (be it assailant or competitor). Since most attacks are initiated with the hands be it in a strike, grab, push or use of a weapon. The versatility continues with incapacitating, disarming or controlling applicability. Other benefits are instant reaction and overall effectiveness. Typically when you attack a part of the opponent's body, it is that area alone that is affected. This causes different reactions from the outside due to pain and damage, whereas the use of this point will affect the entire body, from the inside, out. This will in turn weaken the entire body and cause not only physical dysfunction, but also the confusion that it will bring. Locating this point is easy as it is 3 finger widths from the inside crease of the wrist, just in the indention of the Radial Bone (thumb side). To use it properly it must be compressed against the bone and stretched toward the thumb.

Kyusho he best results will result with quicker pressure, as the nerve message will be far more rapid and acute. The results will be in conjunction with the quickness as well as the force and method used on it. The hand will weaken and open, the arm will weaken and extend, the shoulder will also open and relax, body will fold forward and the legs will buckle (even to the point of contracting up into the fetal position). Impaired sight and hearing can also be initiated as well as dizziness or altered levels of consciousness. Pressing can be accomplished with fingers for standing application or fingers, knuckles, forearms, elbows, knees and shins, for ground fighting applications. Using the knuckles as if knocking on a door will give the sharpest and most definitive dysfunctional reaction from the opponent. • Striking with the forearm will be easier to accomplish as accuracy is not as exacting.

If on the ground: • The above-mentioned tactics will still be affective for those or similar actions. • You can also place pressure on the target with shin or knee to gain control or incapacitate the arm as it weakens the entire body. • Stepping on it with the foot is also an option if you slide toward the hand.

For more seasoned Martial Artists: Starting with the training or skill enhancement should always start with simple stationary location and manipulation to see the reactions as well as the location and methods. Then it is advised to begin training in motion, as that is the only way to assure possible use in real situations. Starting slowly and simply adding more speed and urgency as you develop the accuracy and timing will yield the greatest skill. As the confide3nce is secured with one method of attack and response, work in others, but only one at a time until you are accomplished and confident. Building this way will increase your abilities far more than working with several methods of attack and weapons. Working in upright methods first is critical as this is where the largest range of motion and possibility is prevalent. It will also allow you to use a more varied response because as you proceed into ground applications both parties range of motion and weapon possibilities are far more limited and slow. The accuracy built earlier will also increase your effectiveness in this area of endeavor. For more intense and demanding application use weapon attacks, knife, bottle, stick or handgun. This will add new dimension and dynamic to reach around the weapon itself and get to the point. And as you go to the ground you will have many advantages for this target as well, but again placed in a different dynamic and demand.
