Different times, different cultures and different parts of the world, yet all share certain universal fighting patterns and movements. Gladius Signum is the result of many years of study and practice in different combat systems, both melee and armed confrontation. It was born out of the need to have a coherent system adapted to today's needs, covering the broad spectrum of situations in which both civilians and security forces can be involved. Developed from highly tested and functional systems, Gladius Signum collects, creates and unites the best of each one to make them available to the plaintiff with a clear objective, efficiency in the face of hostile aggression. merican society possesses some enviable democratic virtues. The phrase "Thanks for your service", an expression that we have all heard in American series and movies, denotes the respect of civilians towards the members of an institution such as the army or the navy, beyond political differences, and regardless they agree or not with the conflict to which they were sent. I, who served in the Spanish army stationed in Ceuta (a Spanish enclave sit on the northern shores of Morocco's Mediterranean coast), cannot even imagine such a comment towards myself, neither then, nor later, for the year I spent in the Montesa 3 Armored Cavalry Regiment. It is true that the Spanish army was not professional, instead it was a compulsory military service that everyone was obliged to perform, and to which we all reached more or less annoyed. But once there, we were not a few who felt the pride of being part of that institution, despite some commands, customs, attitudes and states of mind, which were far from being an example. Despite even the third world conditions we sometimes had to live in and other circumstances that would sadly disfigure the experience. But, notwithstanding everything I’m saying, those of us who had inside us some of that traditional military spirit, were, and we're still are, proud of our experience and would have been tremendously happy if we had had an answer from the people, at least similar to that given to North American veterans. But the atmosphere was very peculiar in that Spain of the transition to democracy, and those of us who were there and wanted to fulfill our duties and go through such experience, most of the time we were the people who had not been able to get rid of it through legal or sanitary tricks, or simply by the newly appeared "conscientious objection". The picaresque, house brand in the eternal Spain of Rinconete and Cortadillo, left only a few idealists to coexist with "the clumsiest" when it came to getting out of the way. Military institutions are little understood by those who have not experienced them from within.

My well-remembered and beloved friend, Colonel Ramos Alcaraz, a purebred military man by birth and lineage, had a phrase that summed up the essence of the military organization like no other: "Everything in the army boils down to making your soldiers fear more their sergeant than they fear the enemy’s bullets that come from frontally." All war, all management of violence, is a dirty business, especially when seen from the perspective of a civilian; but "when Santa Barbara thunders", that is, when we are threatened or feel in danger, we either like the police coming, or the military being there to stop the bad guys. The long period of peace that we are living in Europe, with fewer and fewer living combatants from World War II, has wrapped it in a blanket of false comforts, a kind of sense of eternal peace, which the old continent may end up paying dearly. Today, the military institution is gazed from the corner of the eye, as an uncomfortable and useless expense for the welfare society. Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero, as an emergent of this vision, ended up creating a military brigade to assist in situations of natural disasters. The bet was successful, because suddenly the confort-loving and gentrified Spaniards found utility to the Spanish army, which incidentally, improved the image of the institution. However, the true and essential function of the army is far from assisting the population in these situations, its true reason for being is to be permanently ready and alert to repel any external aggression, or to act as a deterrent against possible enemies. Europe, in its gifted self-absorption, is nevertheless flanked by cultures that do not share its "do-gooder" values, and are willing to exert pressure and blackmail continuously. Turkey acts as a barrier to the invasion of migrants from the Middle East, and for this it charges us with good stipends. Lately, Russia, through its Belarus satellite, stalks the Polish borders and that of the Baltic countries with more of the same, and incidentally tightens the screw on another front, bringing thousands of troops to the Ukrainian border. Morocco used this same

resource in Ceuta, opening the borders to thousands of young people crazy for leaving that country to change Spain's position on the Sahara. Europe is itself a feminine culture, therefore it attends to the idea of "rights", the nutrition of its inhabitants and their care, in other words, a garden surrounded by jungle. Outside we have masculine and non-castrated cultures, where democracy is so much like the idea we have of it in the West as chalk resembles cheese… In the meantime, China looks from afar and licks its lips, buying all of Africa and advancing step by step to conclude its agenda as a new dominant power. That said, nothing new under the sun. Necessity is the mother of all things, so the wisest reflection, and even the greatest lucidity in the world, is nothing in the face of its power. We Europeans will continue to sleep the dream of universal goodness and look askance at the military, leaving Papa America to protect us with his umbrella… But Dad’s got a cold and being under the rain is something he likes less and less every day. "America first" was the first foolish step of that evilness called populism of which, even Franklin D. Roosevelt himself managed to heal in the right moment, because in the end, and seen what is out there, both sides of the Atlantic are one and the same thing. In these times, where everything moves so fast, we can’t afford to play certain games. So dear sanctimonious, optimistic, good-natured, and generous European fellows, though I respect and even appreciate! - all your good feelings toward animals, your concern for environmental problems, domestic violence and any other agenda you want to put in the salad bowl of the news to keep my head occupied, here’s one that still remembers that the army is for war and that if our troops are not prepared, if we don’t have a strategy, we’ll just become part of others' strategy. And watch out! Those, the "others", eat immigrant livers every morning for breakfast and at night they dinner the guts of those foolish journalists who think they can have an opinion about anything. No way!! Yes, Americans still thank their veterans, only because so far, they haven't been able to castrate them, since their constitution defends unavoidable basic ideas about freedom, and despite they can't

help be exposed to the natural decline of the time, still, if a guy breaks into your house to rob you, you can shoot him without having to necessarily end up being the culprit. Meanwhile, in this good-natured Spain, I see every day the filthy finger of sanctimonious people, meddling in ordering my private life, legislating that I live according to their ideals, because their idea of good knows no borders, their paternalism knows no limits, and their cynicism ignores proportion. They want to ban smoking on the beaches (and last, but not least, even in private cars!); put an end to prostitution, bullfighting and everything that doesn’t fit with their mellifluous view of the world; charge us for driving on roads that we have already paid a thousand times... and they try to blackmail us with fear ... fear of everything! What maintains and justifies the necessity of their foolish doing. It's a lost battle, because once you give in on the tip, you are screwed and everything else follows behind all at once. I wrote about it when people did not give any importance to the obligation imposed on us to wear seat belts in cars. Regardless of how useful said contraption is, that day our silence gave wings to what came later. That implied assuming that our body was not ours, but a usufruct that the state magnanimously granted us, simply on the pretext that public health expenditure is very high in the event that you are seriously injured in an accident (without even giving us the alternative of saying: "Look man, delete me from your list, I will take care of everything... I will even hire a private insurance if necessary!") When they put your head in, the body goes behind ... There is nothing you can do ... we gave up a long time ago and such are the consequences; distrust gifts, my grandfather used to say: "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch!" How far will they be able to go? I tell you here and now that Orwell fell short, and this meddling has no measure or limit. Good thing I have less left; it's been a long time that I’ve been combing gray hair! But those who come after, will be forced to swallow a big deal of madness and nasty tricks, and what is worse, without having done the military, which if it served for something, it was to temper the own bagpipes and to know first-hand that the world is not a garden. There I leave it ...

Traditional Arts This unfortunate island of Fuerteventura, where between the peaceful calm of the sky and the sea, we are writing this comment about the life that passes by and the one that remains, measures, in its longest stretch, from north to south point, one hundred kilometers, and in its widest, twenty-five. In its southwest extreme, it forms an almost uninhabited peninsula, where some shepherds wander, among naked solitude and the solitary nakedness of the miserable land. This peninsula is known by the name of Jandía, or de la Pared (wall). The wall, or rather, defensive-wall, which gave its name to the Jandía peninsula, and of which sections still remain, was built by the Guanches to separate the two kingdoms in which the island of Majorata - that of the Majoreros -, that is, Fuerteventura, was divided, and to prevent the incursions of one kingdom into the other. And that's how this piece of the African Sahara, launched in the Atlantic, allowed itself to have a peninsula and a wall like that of China, in the historical sense. Miguel de Unamuno

Fuerteventura is an island of the Canary archipelago, belonging to the Macaronesian region, located in the Atlantic Ocean, at 52,3758 Nautical miles (97 km) fr om the northwest coast of the African continent and declared in its entirety a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO. It is the second-largest island within the Canary Islands and the longest in the archipelago, as well as the oldest, from a geological point of view. The primitive inhabitants of the island, the Maxos, Mahos or Majoreros, in their Castilianized version, had a Berber origin, indicating their possible arrival on the island from the middle of the first millennium BC. The Maxo society was articulated on a tribal model. The base of their economy was the cattle ranch, complementing itself with vegetal harvesting, fishing and shellfish, and an incipient agriculture. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the island was divided into two kingdoms: one was that of the followers of King Guise, and the other was composed of the subjects of King Ayose. The territories of these tribes were Maxorata (to the north) and Jandía (to the south), separated by a wall (of which r emains ar e still pr eser ved) on the isthmus of La Pared.

The island had been known long before the Castilian conquest took place. Expeditions had been carried out by Majorcans, Aragonese, Portuguese, Genoese, etc., since the powers disputed the right of conquest. These continuous pirate attacks and raids to capture slaves, forced the mahos to make a pact with the conquerors and submit to the crown of Castile, and thus obtain the support and protection of one of the powers of the time. However, that did not exempt the island from the continuous pirate attacks that continued to be carried out in the following centuries. Once the island was pacified, the weapons of the ancient Canaries began to fall into disuse, but the strong dependence on livestock made the Garrote or Lata, as it is also known on the island, to continue alive to this day. We offer here an article by Grand Master Jorge Domínguez, who will develop these historical aspects and subsequent rescue.

Traditional Arts t present, Fuerteventura is one of the islands that receives the largest number of visitors. It has an international airport with direct flights to all of Europe and an important tourist infrastructure of hotel complexes and apartments. This does not prevent the Cabildo, an island government institution, from giving special importance to the promotion of Native Canarian Sports, which are very present everywhere, especially the Canarian Fight, with a significant local League which houses very prominent teams in the Canarian National League.

Among the activities promoted by the Island Cabildo Sports Council, directed by Mr. Claudio Gutiérrez, are to be found those carried out by the Canarian Garrote Fighting Federation, which, in addition to competitions and tournaments, technician training seminars or the technical meetings, it develops a special task in the dissemination in the school and grassroots environment of the Garrote Canario or Lata Majorera. In the DVD that we present here, in addition to the spectacular landscapes of Fuerteventura, once again, declared as a Common Natural Heritage of Mankind, we will see part of the work that the Federation carries out promoting this traditional activity in outstanding sports clubs such as the Peña de la Amistad, that combines soccer with Garrote Canario.

We will also enjoy the work, with the Tolete Canario, a short weapon, the use of which has been adapted to the Police Defense techniques by the National Police Inspector and Chief of the Scientific Police, Mr. Antonio Cabrera Marichal, and by Mr. Pedro González Montelongo, Local Police Officer and Instructor of the Canary Islands Security Academy, carrying out the technical series in the "Casa de los Coroneles"(House of the Colonels) de La Oliva", an emblematic place where power was based on the island. We will have the opportunity to see in action Grand Master Jorge Domínguez developing “Torciadas” with the Garrote, learned directly from the former Majorero Masters such as Simeón Alberto.

Furthermore, we will see technical shot series taken in the Calderón, a spectacular volcanic area of Malpais and craters, where we will work out drills with both stick and "Tolete", and, especially, “Mano Canaria”, that is, application of the different stick and "Tolete" techniques, but empty-handed. In the Dunas de Corralejo we have filmed several technical series by Garrote Canario and Mano Canaria, bringing the application and parallelism of these traditional techniques closer to the martial artist. This natural tatami on a fine and blonde sand, is the most suitable place to perform "Zapatas" and "Trabas".

The imperative need to effectively repel the European invasions with only sticks and stones and which culminated in the Spanish conquest, after two long centuries of battles, meant an excellent training ground for the Garrote fighting art. Garrote fighting is one of the threads that unites us with the world of the ancient canaries and its cultural continuity that did not come to be truncated, and although it was about to disappear until the agonizing moment of its rescue, a new continuity has been marked with the current Canarians. A historical fact of its own and different from a practice that strives to appear. THE RESCUE OF THE "LATA", THE GARROTE FROM THE ISLAND OF FUERTEVENTURA On this road to recovery, always inquiring and asking, I came across the forgotten "Lata de Fuerteventura" in October 1982. Thanks to the information I gathered from Mr. José Guerra Montesdeoca, a native of Villaverde, Fuerteventura. Below I outline the interview I conducted with Mr. Guerra (in addition to writing down the names and addresses in Fuerteventura of the older practitioners of the "Lata Majorera"), that I published in "La Asociación del Palo Canario" magazine, ASPAC. This information was also published in the book “El Juego de La Lata (Garrote) y el Juego del Palo en Lanzarote” ("The Lata (Garrote) Game and the Stick Game in Lanzarote"). Traditional Arts with his classmates when they left school to play the Lata game. Sometimes they went to the neighboring municipality of Lajares to compete with the locals. To play the game, they’d use whatever stick they could catch, but the best one was undoubtedly the big stick, about two meters long, which was also thick and all even. According to José Guerra, the sticks were brought from La Palma, and they were mainly from wild olive tree and the small-leaved holly (Ilex canariensis); they also prepared their clubs using the arboreal resources of Fuerteventura, such as almond tree and tarajal (Tamarix canariensis, a small tree of the tamaricaceae family): “… Tarajal wood is very good because it yields, and it doesn't chip. The white eucalyptus Lata (garrote) was also good. We were always looking for a wood that would not explode, that was flexible so that it wouldn't break off suddenly if it hit a strong stick." They learned to play from those people who mastered the handling of the Lata. Among them, “Los Camacho”, Jesús and Pedro Camacho, stood out. There were also Simeon Saavedra, and Martin Sanabria both from Lajares. Mr. José Espinosa stood out in La Oliva, while in Villaverde were noticeable the González brothers, Ignacio and Leandro"... They were shepherds and they just loved it! There was also a brother of Simeón, named Tomás Saavedra ..." “We would meet in the evenings or at noon and the old people would sit down and explain. We grabbed the stick by placing our hands in the center of the weapon, each one in his own position, and hands moved up and down along the stick, you shouldn’t have them fixed, because if you were to discharge a blow in the opponent's thigh, you had to move the stick to make it longer. You kept picking up the stick and stretching it out, and your hands never let it go. That’s what I learned from older people who loved the stick.” Mr. José Guerra enthusiastically told me about a meeting they had with the neighboring town of Lajares:

Traditional Arts “… I remember once when we got together five or six, to play against Lajares, and I can recall that we won on points, there was a certain Roque who gave us the win. He already passed away, he was a man who knew a lot and in the way he governed the sticks he was counting us the points. But the most important thing was that the people who were watching said: Look, that one was wrong! That one did not do it right! And then the discussions would come, and that was the main thing.” However, these meetings were very occasional, as they were not organized in this sense, nor did they train with the intention of forming teams: “… The way to stumble the sticks was: 'Let's give a hand to the stick!' And we would give a hand to the stick; we would put the cattle away a little, or we would take advantage of it when it was grazing, and it was still. Always in the afternoon, or at noon when the cattle were eating, in the evenings or at dusk, when the moons were very good. In those days, it seems that there were not as many clouds as now ...”

LOCATION OF MAJORERO MASTERS With this scoop, and with a list of names and addresses that Mr. José Guerra gave me of people familiar with the handling of La Lata (Garrote), I organized a trip to Fuerteventura, accompanied by several colleagues from ASPAC, on December 6, 1982, with the objective of locating the ancient practitioners of the Game of Lata and trying to regain their practice. Continuing with the line of fostering teamwork and making the information that I was obtaining in my research and rescue work available to everyone, the characteristics of La Lata Game were published for the first time in the media (“Diario de Las Palmas", dated December 21, 1982; "La Provincia", dated December 30, 1982; and "El Eco de Canarias", on January 4, 1983). The successive visits that I had the opportunity to make both to Lanzarote and to Fuerteventura, allowed me to obtain a collection of data, which shows the roots that this tradition had, and also outlines the technical structure of La Lata or Garrote in these two Majorera islands. In this second stage of research carried out in Fuerteventura, stands out Mr. Simeón Alberto Brito, born in La Antigua, on August 12, 1918. He learned how to use the Lata with Mr. Ruperto Martín, from Betencuria, who, in 1932 instructed several young people in the Game. Although at first he was reluctant, he was encouraged by the enthusiasm of his apprentices, as Mr. Simeón Alberto recounts: “… Despite the respect we had for him, because he had given a "palencasillo" to more than one. Although he was already old, we were afraid of him because he would give us a blow if we didn't stop. Once, he hit with the stick on my head and put me to bed. He said, this is the way you learn, damn it…" (See local newspapers "La Provincia", September 16, 1987, and "Canarias 7", September 19, 1987). These practices, carried out with a large stick called Lata or Garrote, were quite popular among the population of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. According to the

old Majoreros, "the long stick was played a lot and by anyone." “An uncle of mine, who died during the war, also had an idea. His name was MARCOS BRITO FIGUEROA; he took care of some goats. In the past, the Lata game was most popular everywhere. Before, people looked a lot for wild olive sticks, which were the heaviest and strongest wood sticks, and "they sang" in such a way that they could be heard from afar. Shepherds were those who most devoted themselves to that. The Lata is held in the center; hand up and hand down. The stick is never released. With this thing of letting go of the stick and then picking it up, the Lata is no longer the same” (Simeón Alberto Brito).

A possible relative of Mr. Simeón Alberto Brito was Mr. RAMÓN BRITO, who, together with his partner Mr. RAMÓN GONZÁLEZ, both from Tinajo, municipality of Lanzarote, are remembered by Mr. Tomás Rodríguez Espínola, born in Teguise in 1926. “The size was approximately the size of the person who carried it, which was the Lata that carried the shepherds, who used it to lean on. In other words, it was a tall and strong stick. With those sticks, I saw that people played that game: to beat each other. Actually, it had nothing to do with playing, except if you were teaching someone how to defend himself. Before starting, they grabbed the stick almost by one end (long guard), but once they had started, some grabbed it in the middle, or the way they could best handle it.

Traditional Arts It was about hitting each other properly, so that when they disarmed you, and you couldn’t stop it with your stick, you were hit all over! The only thing that I always observed is that, if the fight was rather an exhibition, they would try to hit one another from the waist down, but when it was a serious fight, they could hit you on the ankle as well as they could hit your head and make you drop stiff on the floor. The ones I remember most from that time, are Mr. RAMÓN BRITO and RAMÓN GONZALEZ, who have

already passed away. When they played the stick jokingly, there was nothing funny about it; their blows could completely knock out anyone, leaving him unfit to move. They were from Tinajo, both of them. One died not long ago and the other left for Uruguay, already old, and today he will have died. That was forty or fifty years ago." (Mr. Tomás Rodríguez Espínola, Teguise, Lanzarote, 1926).

Combat Psychological Training

Greetings, kind readers! In this article by Gladius Signum we will focus on the importance of psychological training and see what impact it has on people in different situations of violence.

The mind, its mastering and understanding, a very important factor in combat, it’s also one of those universal fight principles of which we talked about in the previous article. If we do not have an understanding of our mind and the mental processes that we go through in a situation of violence, we will not be able to train it and act effectively when the moment of a confrontation comes. That's why, at Gladius Signum, we emphasize so much psychological training.

Military Combat t's something that we have seen a lot of times. In a not necessarily armed confrontation, it's easy to see people apparently well-prepared people in the Dojo, who are unable to function properly and defend themselves from an attack. So what’s the use of so much physical training and effort if, at the moment of truth, I won’t be able to put into practice everything I’ve worked so hard for? The answer is easy, if your mind is not prepared for the combat, your body will not react properly. “Having fear of dying is common in hostile aggression; in a combat it becomes a real threat, generating an anxiety hard to manage, and lived differently before, during and after the fight.”

This fact has as a consequence not only the discomfort of the person with the onset of various physical and psychological signs and symptoms, but, at times, it can also lead to putting his or her life at risk, due to not being in full use of his or her faculties. The essential factor by which a person experiences this in a hostile aggression is fear for his own integrity. The person experiences the struggle for survival in the face of an aggression of violence. And in the case of military and security forces, the fulfillment of duty and loyalty to their companions and the performance of their functions. Having fear of dying is common in hostile aggression; in a combat it becomes a real threat, generating an anxiety hard to manage, and lived differently before, during and after the fight. There are various forms of reaction to combat stress, such as asteniform syndrome, one of the most frequent and common, in which the person acts slowly, with indecision, passivity and difficulty in prioritizing tasks or movements, and with loss of initiative in the face of aggression, as well as fatigue and exhaustion. Muscle tension, manifested as headache and inability to later rest or relax, also comes into play. Clearly, the presence of tremors when facing hostile aggression is generally common, and although it may be normal, it can lead to something disabling if it occurs during combat action. The cardiorespiratory system is frequently affected in a violent situation, generating palpitations, hyperventilation, vertigo and dizziness. Indeed, body activation is one of the emotional reactions to stress, in its fair measure it can be considered positive, and it is a way for our body to keep us alert and in a state of survival, but like everything in this life, no matter how good it is, if it is in excess and without control, it leads us to failure. For this reason, trained fighters, policemen, military or private security forces will be able to adequately discard the threatening stimuli of those who are not, being in an adequate psychological state to react to hostile aggression.

For all this, it's crucial that we begin to see the importance of working not only on the physical and technical aspects, but also on the psychological, in order to teach correctly how to act accordingly when faced with a threat. At Gladius Signum we wanted this to be an important factor in training and education programs for both security forces and civilians. Proper training of the person can be considered one of the best techniques for reducing combat stress, enhancing their self-confidence and ensuring that they are adequately trained. Giving them tools for the personal identification of stress and how to manage it, I have tried to recreate the situations that can be encountered in reality. It is true that we will never be able to accurately recreate an aggression of extreme real violence, but the closer we get to it, the better. The trust they place in us as instructors is of the utmost importance, and we should not take it lightly; we owe them the best possible training and preparation for the harsh reality. Hwa Rang Do Discipline PART 3 Children lack long-term temporal reference In the early years of child development, they lack any form of temporal reference. They cannot distinguish clearly the ideas of past, present and future. Everything for a child is in the moment. So, for you to make a comments like “you have to do well in school so you can get good grades and go to a good college so you can get a good job,” doesn’t and won’t register to the child. This is the same when you discipline them for something they did a day after. To be most effective, you must catch them in the act. This means that you must be vigilant and be present, watching their every move to catch them performing the negative behavior you are trying to correct.

Don’t make threats you cannot keep / Always follow through Now that you have caught them in the act, you impose a condition on your child. “If you do this again, I am going to take away your toys.” You made a threat and of course the child does it again but is never caught. Then he/she will continue to do so unless you catch them and reinforce that it’s not correct. Their moral barometer is created by you, the parent. They are not bor n with knowing what is right and wrong. You, the parent must teach them by setting proper boundaries. By constantly reinforcing good behavior as supposed to bad behavior, then your child will develop the experiences to form the references to guide him/her in discerning what is right and wrong. The right behavior must be accompanied by some positive reinforcement and the bad behavior must be disciplined with the appropriate negative reinforcement. They must be taught at an early age that every action has a consequence. You must remember, however, to follow up with your threats. As the saying goes, “One should never make a threat one cannot back up.” Well, this is no different with your children.

Hwa Rang Do Lead by example Always do what you say and say what you mean. This is the hardest to maintain but the most effective means of leadership. Too many of us lead by words and not by action. People, especially children learn and do what you do more than what you say.

Be Consistent Always be consistent in your actions whether that is in what you do and say as well as in your disciplining. You cannot be inconsistent and give mixed messages.

Both positive & negative reinforcement It is important to recognize and reward good behavior. But it is more critical that you do not support negative behavior by just ignoring it or being passive about it. You must give negative consequences for negative behavior so that they will learn that all actions lead to consequences. Hence, you are teaching them what is right and wrong.

Hwa Rang Do Keep your promises Don’t make promises you cannot keep and always keep the promise you make.

Your child does not need another friend, what they need is a parent One day a mother came to me in tears and said that she wants her daughter to like her but being a single mother, she also must discipline. She said that her daughter hates her, and they always get into arguments and wished that they can be like friends. I asked her one question, “Do you think she needs another friend or a parent?” Then of course she realized that she must be a mother first as that’s what her child needs. The mother is frustrated and is thinking for herself so that she can feel better, but although unpleasant she must be the disciplinarian first. What is important is that you always communicate to the child that you love them and that you are doing what’s best for them.

You have to leave them room to fall, to make mistakes It is through our mistakes that we learn. By giving them the freedom to choose and creating situations and scenarios which are not too harmful, you ae teaching them how to make good choices. If you protect them too much and never allow them to fail or make mistakes, then they will never learn and grow.

They have to learn to deal with criticism In this current generation, this is one of the biggest problems I find not only in children but in adults as well. It is through criticism that they learn, however, it seems most people spend all their energy in trying not to be criticized, which means that they avoid asking questions or participating. You must teach them not to fear criticism, but this is easier said than done. It requires all the other things which I have stated to be properly implemented in order to develop a strong self-image and thick skin to withstand harsh criticisms or even any form of verbal attacks. By coddling them, fighting their fights for them, and only giving positive reinforcement will surely have unintended consequences which will affect them negatively throughout their entire life. Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. Proverbs 9:8

Hwa Rang Do Take the time to explain why something is right or wrong Often, we scold or discipline but do not take the time to explain why. It is essential that we take the time to explain what they did and why it’s wrong and that’s why they are being disciplined. Normally, the first time should be a warning, but when they repeat it again then you must discipline. This means that you have to remember how many times you have corrected them and what consequences you told them would take place. If they continue to do what you have told them not to, with each frequency the disciplinary measure must increase.

Treat them the way you want them to be If you want them to be kind, then you must be kind. If you want them to be generous then you must be generous. If you want them to be strong then you cannot be weak. If you want them not to overreact, then you must be calm. You must become what you want them to be.

Don’t nag! Don’t demean your words, yourself by being redundant and rhetorical. Make sure every word is heard and follow through with consequences. If you repeat the same things like a broken record and do not follow up with action, then it will not even be heard. You will become a nuisance best to be ignored.

Spend “quality” time Just spending time with your child does little. You must participate in activities together that challenges them mentally and physically, sharing a common goal. Ideally, something in which you can work together to problem solve and enjoy together.

Alleviate distractions and get their attention If you want them to listen to you then make sure to get their attention by making sure that you have eye-contact whenever you are speaking to them. I tell my instructors to go to their knee and lower themselves to meet eye-to-eye when speaking to children. You must know that you have their full attention, and they will appreciate you more by not talking down to them. Furthermore, if they are performing a task, doing homework, activities which require their concentration then it is crucial that other external distractions are illuminated.

Practice quiet time It is important to teach them how to have “quiet time” not as a punishment, but as a way to quiet their minds and become mindful. Just a few minutes, 5 to 10 minutes of meditation, sitting in silence to reflect and be present in their minds will be vital for them to learn and cope with the stresses and pressures of life.

Disconnect! In our current society of internet, computers, smart phones, and social media, it is crucial that you create times, days to disconnect completely from all technologies. The duration and frequency are up to you, but I would recommend 3 to 4 days per month.

Hwa Rang Do Expect more if you want them to do more and be more They must know clearly what you expect of them. Your children, students want to please you and does not want to disappoint. If you tell them that you expect better, then most likely they will rise to meet the challenge. However, you tell them that they cannot and will fail, then they will do just that. If you want them to succeed, then expect them to succeed, and if they fail then have them try, try again and with each incremental improvement encourage them.

Nature of children are Attention Deficit & Hyperactive Lacking focus and attention, possessing lots of energy is the nature of being a child. The goal is to help them to focus and channel their energies by motivating and challenging them with activities that keeps their interest and burn up their abundant youthful energy. It is when they are bored and not challenged without any physical outlet that they get themselves in trouble and become unmanageable.

When you discipline make it count If you want to discipline less, then you must make sure that when you do discipline that it counts and it matters. At our school the disciplinary measure is knuckle pushups on the wooden floor. Placing the knuckles on the hard floor is very unpleasant but it does no real harm. It is actually beneficial to creating strong fists by strengthening the wrist and developing callus on their knuckles. However, the pain felt on the knuckles is very motivating to not repeat the same mistakes.

Don’t bribe or reward them with money for things they should be doing It is not a good idea to motivate your children to do the chores around the house or anything that you require them to do for money. They should want to do it out of love and care to help their parents and siblings and not because of money. Even when they start out doing chores to help, if you start giving them money for it, soon their motivation will change to money. Greed is an intrinsic negative trait of human beings, there’s no reason to teach it. I don’t agree with allowances either. If they need money for anything, then they should ask for it. A family home is not a workplace, but if you want to teach them the value of money and how to manage it, then when they are old enough, you can open a bank account and start them with some seed money. They then can acquire some part time jobs or you create opportunity for them to earn some money that is outside of the required chores of the house. That is a far better way to teach them finances than giving them money for things they should be doing anyway.

A no is a “no” and a yes is a “yes” It’s important to clearly distinguish your negative and positive feedbacks. They should never be ambiguous to create confusion. Clear communication is essential in any relationship. Also, when you have said no to something then you must stick to it, but it is also true when you have said yes. You can’t without good reason change your preferences and for some unseen reason if you do, you must make sure to make them understand why you changed you mind, not resorting to, “Because I said so!”

This practitioner will continue to exercise with the goal of being more competent than others, and in such a case he will feel confident and competent. An important point to emphasize is that these two types of motivation are independent of each other. Practitioners can be both taskoriented and ego-oriented at the same time, or they can be strongly one and weakly the other.

Krav Maga IMADS After having gone through the different orientations, it's time to put the question: What impact does the type of motivation have on the activity practiced? The type of motivation of the young or adult practitioner has a significant impact on their sports practice. Regardless of the skill, task-oriented motivation seems more appropriate than ego-oriented motivation, because the practitioner's sense of competence is based on a process of self-improvement. Task-oriented motivation: Practitioners who develop a task-oriented motivation aim to develop their personal competence. They choose to perform increasingly difficult tasks that allow them to persevere in the effort. In general, this type of motivation is associated with positive perceptions and behaviors on the part of the practitioner, since the latter establishes a link between effort and competence.

Ego-Oriented Motivation: For practitioners who develop ego-oriented motivation, successful completion of a task means performing it better than one or more practitioners through greater skill and not through effort or progress. Remember ... Ego-oriented motivation has a great disadvantage because the practitioner will enjoy participating in an activity only if he is certain of being as much or even more competent than the others. (Carpenter & Yates ‘1997), Fry & Duda (1997), Williams (1998). As an Instructor concerned about the correct development of his pupils, will have to encourage his practitioners to develop a task-oriented motivation (whatever his orientation towards the ego), that is to say, to think that success, satisfaction and pleasure are conditioned by the efforts made to master the task at hand. (A.D.E.P.S). The chance to teach children is a precious commodity. "Better understand to better adapt."

Sensei on the Road - Sensei on continuous study

During last year, I was invited to Angola in Africa to establish a martial art and combat system for a particular requirement, and while teaching I was conducting a deep study of Africa.

Meet Yosi a former commando officer that fall in love with Angola and the dark continent. He traveled and worked on projects for the last 20 years all over Africa, Yosi like most SF is funny and friendly and holds ton of knowledge that each day stops on my Mat and helps teach from his memory of Emergencies, Medical to Survival and cooking in the field to so much more on plants and natural medicine using herbs , Yosi is not teaching any security and works in Construction but I employed his skills and advice every day.

First advice was Humble myself and talk in the Native language in order to break the wall between me and the men. Start each class with "Awallali " Good morning... Next was to teach them by their way and not the Japanese way... and I found that once I approach in the local way with dance songs and rhythm and natural movement I can better explain what I want to teach and share and pass it in a more effective and progressive way The Project was teaching new recruiters by the first three days what we call in Israel "Gibush" Monitoring and selecting while using very simple missions to test basic understanding

and following basics orders and missions and divide into few groups that will be selected into different missions in the coming days. During those three days, they run and carry weights and go through "Hell Week" very basic missions from filling sand in bags and moving them about, while the order is to file the bags like 75 % and observe who actually follows directions and who demonstrates leadership and Character while each student carries a number and instructors note marks on each number student.

Some mission is to carry big wood log and crossing the river while using it as a bridge and see again how they all act and who takes the lead some missions come to reveal the Basic fitness and coordination of the troop, some to test Aggression and fighting spirit and how they deal with violence. Like " Sumo Circle as need fight take out your object out as he try take you out.

In between we sing, dance, and have much fun even though training was really hard and was conducted under the scorching sun in nature. The last test was based on SERE school Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) and my workshop " Only Knife " as students get ONLY a knife ( Made by Yosi , origin they need make their own ) and are required to set shelter and fashion their own ropes and build camp and study basics survival including field cookery. The third day started at 3 am with a wake up muster in 7 minutes be ready to begin an eight kilometer swift march run with wood logs and ending in setting up a fire place and dance as we are at Angola where Capoeira was given birth.

Learning Survival Skills

While I kept teaching the basic course after the initial three days, I kept up my observations and teaching and traveling as I also went into the "Pavela" slums and saw how Capoeira is handed down and studied with no real fancy Gym environment.

When you love and keep in your heart what you do. At the same time I kept studying on plants and survival and how to harness nature. How to be mindful of snakes, spiders and how the locals use nature and plants as food and treat different medical necessities including how to use ants to suture cuts... to pick up an army or leaf-cutter ant - Suture ants. Learning Survival Skills

The maggots that hatch from the eggs feed on the dead tissue in the wound and clean it. The beneficial effects of maggots in the healing process of infected wounds has been recognized since the time of the Mayans, and perhaps before that. With humans, maggots found their way into wounds when left untreated for too long. This happened frequently under battlefield conditions. But surgeons observed that wounds infested with maggots healed more quickly and with fewer complications than comparable wounds that had not become infested with them.

I also learned who was the queen who fought slavery to regain freedom - One of the great women rulers of Africa, Queen Anna Nzinga (circa 1581-1663) of Angola fought against the slave trade and European influence in the seventeenth century. Avi Nardia begins a new series of works focused on CQB and high-risk situations. Some can be good shooters but bad fighters and it's preferable to develop the fighting spirit, not only teaching how to be good shooters, but also to handle aggressive situations to face reality and violence. To achieve these principles, acting with determination and confidence is essential. Martial Arts Help in the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease Dementia, being one of the most significant diseases in neurology and psychiatry, is usually linked to chronological age and most often appears in people over the age of 65. According to the criteria of the World Health Organisation, symptoms of dementia include a reduced ability to memorize as well as some other cognitive difficulties such as dysphasia (speaking disorder), agnosia (a state in which a person loses the ability to recognize objects, faces, voices or places), apraxia (total or partial inability to perform correct, logical and pre-learned actions that have a goal), disorientation, inability to make decisions etc. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia and the most high-risk factor for its appearance is (old) age. After this, other physical disorders which include motor, speech, hearing and other disorders follow. Other symptoms include forgetfulness, loss in time and space, inability to live on your own which leads to total dependency on others and their constant care. Since dementia is a slowly progressing illness, symptoms can become visible only after approx. 10 years or ever 20 years before they start to develop more seriously and rapidly. Alzheimer's disease denotes the biggest challenge for the patient's family who may not be sufficiently versed in the illness and its progression. The disease requires a lot of sacrifice, dedication and love for the person affected by dementia. It requires a lot of work, motivation, knowledge and patience in order to gain a good and successful communication with the person suffering from Alzheimer's disease. An early diagnosis will have a great impact because the family often doesn't recognize the symptoms or assigns such behavior to "senile dementia”. According to the number of

people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, they take up to 60% of all patients suffering from some type of dementia. It is very important to point out that ageing increases the risk of dementia's appearance, but it doesn't necessarily mean that one will suffer from it. It would be very harmful to wrongfully interpret symptoms of dementia as a normal process of ageing. This refers us to the growing need to educate various experts who work with elderly persons as well as society in general. Also, an early, active and correct diagnosis of the illness is paramount. The key role in the early discovery of cognitive disabilities, Alzheimer's disease and other dementia have general practitioners because the first symptoms are usually noticed by the patient's family, his/her guardians or the patient himself. The patient and his/her family are gradually being isolated because the patient's behavior will become socially unacceptable. A reassignment of roles will probably happen within the family as well as an emotional and material exhaustion. It is important to point out how nutrition has a very important role in the prevention of diseases related to dementia. Also, adequate physical activity helps secure brain health which, in turn, affects the health of the entire human organism. Studies that have been run across the world prove that well-balanced and professionally-chosen martial arts exercizes positively affect Alzheimer's disease. This, of course, greatly depends on the person, as well as his/her stage and progress of the illness. It is very important to take into consideration realistic criteria for creating a training programme with not too difficult exercizes that the patient is able to successfully perform. Activities should be comfortable, stimulating, but shouldn't include big decision-making or too many challenges. For example, in the first and somewhat second stage of the illness, certain dosed pushing and pulling exercizes that include a person in order to maintain balance are extremely useful. Thanks to these exercizes, the patient is gently thrown out of balance and can try to establish it on his/her own. When creating an exercize programme or while choosing exercizes for a patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease, we should take into consideration some recommended training that includes an exercize band which is often used to perform strength training in wrestling, judo, jujitsu, boxing and other martial arts. This type of strength training is very beneficial for patient and is even recommended by doctors. An exercize band which is available and affordable in sports shops is an excellent tool and is easy to adapt to the physical abilities of each person. With the help of the band, it is simple to perform certain strength exercizes and strengthen postural muscles. In the first and, partially, in the second phase of the disease it might be very beneficial to practice some basic steps in Brazilian capoeira in order to maintain balance during walking. By practicing this basic step, a person alternates between a left and right broader and more stable stance which is how he/she can maintain his/her balance more easily. It is also beneficial to practice the basic step with an emphasis on a dance step and with music because this makes it more fun and enjoyable. Namely, learning and memorizing new steps activates neural paths in the brain while keeping it strong, active and healthy. For the same reason, certain martial arts where the exercizes are performed with sticks are also recommended because the patient can coordinate his/her moves more easily, which is of great benefit. Here, the recommended skills are kali, escrima, arnis etc. This type of practice adds to a better blood flow throughout the brain and it also stimulates growth and survival of brain cells. Certain martial arts where a person spins around a stick or performs some easier movements with a stick are also recommended. If needed, the person can also lean onto the stick for a better balance. Apart from karate, tae kwon do, aikido and ko budo, some kung fu styles also use a stick.

By gently performing leg kicks, the patient is developing balance on one leg which is a very useful exercize when it comes to this type of illness. This type of exercize is very present in the abovementioned martial arts skills such as Tai Chi, karate

(performing katas), tae kwon do,capoeira, or kung fu. Additionally, if performing katas with an emphasis on a breathing technique, this can help a patient who has difficulty breathing, but also to facilitate pronouncing certain words that result in speaking difficulties. It is recommended to perform katas along with music because it can improve the patient's engagement, his/her social and emotional skills and abilities, decrease problematic behavior and act as a stimulant to regain some linguistic skills when dealing with dementia. Also, this kind of exercize helps persons suffering from dementia thanks to a greater flow of oxygen into the brain. It is recommended that the patient counts the various kicks and punches in boxing, karate or tae kwon do. It isn't important if the kicks are given to a boxing bag or if performed idly, with an arm or a leg. Many studies show that practicing certain martial arts adds to a rise in cognitive skills among those people who are suffering from a mild or medium type of Alzheimer's disease. Professionally picked martial arts exercizes can help establish the brain activities of the affected person, not just by stabilizing the bloodflow, but also in encouraging the creation of neurotransmitters that protect the brain and slow down the process of ageing. Along with these martial arts exercizes, the patients should be frequently taken out for walks. It is good to consolidate a combination of light walking and chosen martial arts exercizes that can be

done in nature (in a yard or in the nearest park). A positive effect of such exercize was also proven by a study conducted by Dr. Nicola Lautenschlager from the University of Melbourne (A study about the effects of exercize and walking among patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease). He has proven that this type of training lowers the blood pressure as well as the risk of cardiovascular diseases in patients suffering from the disease. Performing medically-recommended and adequately adapted martial arts exercizes can, among other activities that require mobility, help in maintaining a higher level of functioning for a longer period of time. This is why it is recommended for patients to practice performing boxing punches with lighter weights in their hands. Sometimes the gloves themselves can bear enough weight for the patient. Depending on the person, some find themselves in the first and some in the second phase of the disease. Light bag punching that lasts for several minutes can be used as a good aerobic training for the patient. He or she can perform certain exercizes, e.g. boxing punches or hand blocks used in karate (tae kwon do) while sitting on a chair if the person is too weak to stand on his/her own. In the third and most difficult phase of the disease, the patient can lightly perform the punches or various hand blocks by even laying in bed. Some other light martial arts exercizes can also be done this way, e.g. light leg kicks. In the second phase of the disease, patients can become more irritable and can sometimes be uncontrollably or inexplicably aggressive. This is usually so among male patients. Aggressive behavior can be best avoided by actively listening, with an efficient verbal response as well as by removing the cause for the problem. Among such patients, in come situations, exercize and light boxing bag punching can help with lowering their irritability level and uncontrolled aggressiveness. Punching the bag will reduce their anger as well as the patients wish to harm other unknown persons, i.e. "strangers”. Scientists haven't found all the reasons and connections, but they agree that socialization and the practice of appropriate martial arts exercizes that stimulate the patient's mental activities also foster the connection between the neurons in the brain. By practicing closely-picked martial arts exercizes (e.g. Tai Chi, aikido, karate, kung fu, tae kwon do, capoeira), this activity will reduce general symptoms of depression and improve the cognitive functions of elderly patients. For this reason, it is recommended to practice during morning hours because this is when patients are least upset and their cognitive functions are at their highest level.

The patient should be able to take on other outdoor activities along with martial arts. When walking, he/she should be given a cane or a walker. Whenever possible, one should avoid steps or other possible obstacles. The living environment should be adjusted to the patient's needs and one should take away all objects that might be in the way (chairs, lamps), take off all unnecessary pictures and mirrors from the walls (the patients aren't able to recognize themselves). The comfort of the space should be a priority as well as giving the patient enough light because they are often afraid of the dark. The bathroom should also be adapted and one should help the patient when using the toilet. It is important to make sure that the patient doesn't lock himself/herself, that he/she doesn't leave the water or the stove on. Food and drinks should be prepared and given in the patients' hands because they won't take them on their own from the table. Several smaller and diverse meals should be adjusted to their needs. When they forget or lose something, don't be angry with them and don't yell. One should definitely help them get dressed or changed. If they are walking with you around the apartment (around the dojo or fitness), it means that they are afraid or scared of some noise or sound. The caregiver should be thoughtful, kind and patient. It is especially important that the front door or the apartment door is locked and the key is stored (it is also good to put a poster on the door so that the patient doesn't think

Taking on martial arts, knowing how to properly make use of meditation as well as certain religious beliefs can be of great help. This discipline is completely unknown to the general Western public despite being thousands of years old. The art of Vật is composed of hundreds of techniques and variations. However, the Vật techniques in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo do not represent the proportion they deserve, only 28 techniques, despite the fact that the Founding Master was a Vật fighter. At Vovinam Integral we have tried to remedy this by adding many traditional Vật techniques, with over a hundred attack techniques (takedowns and projections) making up the overall program. To that we must add all the counter attacks for each takedown and projection technique as well as the defenses once on the ground. All this is complemented by all the techniques of compression, arm and leg locks, strangulation and choking, immobilization and controls, many of which are drawn from Jiu-jitsu, as is already the case in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo.
