Professor Maurizio Maltese presents in this extensive and detailed work the "Scherma Jonica", Ionian fencing, an art cultivated century after century, perfected and made more and more effective by constant practice in every district, village and town of the area straddling the Ionian Sea, between Calabria, Apulia and Basilicata, and with very diverse influences from pre-Roman, Greek, Byzantine and Norman peoples, as well as Spanish and French origin. The knife was the weapon available even to the poorest of men, the farmer and the herdsman, who used it in most of their daily work, from cutting a piece of bread to defending themselves against an aggressor (be it animal or human). As fighting became indispensable to assert one's rights, the need arose to train, to attend a teacher and sometimes a school. In the schools of arms one learned to use other elements in aid or in concert with the knives, such as the jacket to camouflage the blade, which, unbeknownst to the adversary, or the hat. verybody wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die! This phrase, which I often hear from Shidoshi Jordan, sums up very well a controversial aspect of people’s capacity for commitment today. In a scenario of multiple offers, where the idea of leisure has been settled down as a consumer good, and even raised as a cultural value, everything that requires effort or commitment, is fucked up. In my view, calling certain things culture is an aberration. Culture implies just that, cultivation; and plowing the land, whether as a physical reality, or as a metaphor for something spiritual, requires effort. Cultivating oneself is a voluntary task, a task that involves effort and determination, however pleasant it may be, and however much love we feel for what attracts us, whether it be a new knowledge or an unknown activity. Calling video games culture or sport, for example, is misleading. For the record, I have nothing against them! But they are fun, an escape from everyday life, and pretending to make them culture is nonsense. Of course, being a business that moves more money today than cinema itself, they are buying their quota of kindness by giving them prestige as a positive activity, raising it, nothing more and nothing less, to the rank of poetry, music or painting... however, things have to be called by their name. We are nevertheless at an interesting moment in the semiotics of modernity, where everything is distorted. The inclusive and politically correct language has left dangerous derivatives. It is told that once, Abraham Lincoln asked in front of an audience, how many paws a dog has, if you count the tail as another paw. When they answered five, Lincoln reprimanded them, saying that the correct answer was four, because the fact that you called the tail a paw does not make it a paw.

The struggle for the control of the story is the Pyrrhic victory of the deteriorated and shrank left, faced with its dream of a herd-like society that blindly heed the summons and fall into deceit. Pyrrhic, because its communist dream collapsed with the Soviet Union, nevertheless tremendously dangerous in its derivatives for those of us who love freedom. The awareness of the value of effort has been mediated even in the definition of the type of society that the West has chosen: from a consumer society to an information society, and then to the well-being society which, as its name suggests, is miles away from the s o c i e t y o f g o o d w o r k t h a t o u r g r a n d p a re n t s bequeathed to us. Pride for what had been achieved, the correct assessment of what had been obtained, are things of the past. Emancipation, and the advent of smarties and opportunists, have put an end to all that. It turns out, however, that it is precisely that types of activities - those that entail both virtues, effort and commitment - what give us solid and verifiable achievements, what make us change in the direction we seek, and of course, what produce greater pleasure in the end. The idea of postponing the prize, using the carrot to move the donkey, is unthinkable in the culture of immediacy that is gagging us. And, of course, using the stick is out of the question... "No pain, no gain", goes the bodybuilders famous saying! Although the idea of pain doesn't interest me in this context, it's true that every effort, and especially, every sacrifice, involves somehow a discomfort. The first blockage of a chakra that we have to break at the beginning of any physical activity is the mental one. For example, you get out to practicing jogging, and it doesn’t take too long until you start wondering internally:

Why the heck am I doing this? The mind is quite treacherous! And when it comes to any effort, is a very skilled saboteur. The second chakra involved is that of the speech, especially if we run alongside someone; the verb enters the playfield in order to avoid living in silence that moment in which anguish becomes present. From the laryngeal chakra we pass to the solar plexus, with its famous and uncomfortable flatulence; the whole thing becomes more and more somatic as we keep descending to the lower chakras. This instance only intends to exemplify some of the many unconscious mechanisms that manipulate our lives, although the elements that rise like a wall between us and what we really want to conquer, are many, and of very varied makings. When it comes to assessing things in their real context, reflection is essential, and for this to take place, one must have time to dedicate to it; a time that we do not possess, because we fill it with obligations; a time that is the scarcest good of our days. Slow food is one of the reactions to this pressure, the following has been the diminution of an entire generation, which harassed and sunk under the pressure of a demanding society, of an accelerated environment, has reacted without the slightest trace of audacity, bravery or boldness, simply

questioning the capitalist system, with no other alternative than proposing a return to a new sweetened version of communist hell. A new hippism, a new passivity, more melancholy and, in a certain way, deterministic, has distanced the youngest, seeing no way out, from the idea of effort as a value. But the effort, in addition to the will, is the son of necessity, and as long as there is no hunger, well, that… to live off the parents or on Father State grants. You can't expect the elm to bear pears, nor can you harvest any fruit tree, if you don't give yourself the opportunity and the means to grow. It's the whiting bites its own tail! Bad world we leave to the boys, raised between cottons, but without prospects... they have it clear. Now it's time for real plowing! Because those ideas lead to poverty, not only of the spirit, but also of the flesh. "From the old, the advice", goes the saying, but I already wrote it 30 years ago: to our generation, when old, advice will not be asked, but to lend a hand, because for us there will be no pensions, there will be no break. It's no longer a question of wanting, but of being able; it will be no longer a question of capacity, but of necessity. To those born in the sixties, if Putin doesn't avoid it by euthanizing us in a group, that is what await us; so, just be aware, it's getting closer!

The Law Enforcement Program

The Law Enforcement Program Law Enforcement Agencies as well as Personnel are under public scrutiny more than at any other time in History. The use of force issue is one that is realizing fierce public attention and enforcement, which is making the field officer's work all that much harder as well as dangerous to their personal well being and safety. Whereas the brave Men and Women are facing more brutal and uncaring criminals, with little regard for life, they, the ones charged with protecting us from this vile element, are being forced to treat the criminal with sensitivity and regard to protect them from even minor injury. Law Enforcement is at a disadvantage that is being pressed upon them by governmental bureaucracy at an alarming pace, which in turn is embolden the criminal element even more. The criminals know the legal limits imposed and work it against the unfortunate Law Enforcement Agents caught in the middle. It is in light of this dilemma that the Kyusho Program has been developed. As each situation or event an Officer faces has stages of possible escalation, the Kyusho program has been designed for such probabilities. These stages begin not with initial stages of confrontation such as verbal commands, but where the event escalates to the need for control and restraint. Such restraints and controls as preparation and administration of uncuffed search, initiating and actual handcuffing to lifting the perpetrator from the prone position for transport. Briefing Kyusho for Law Enforcement is trained in 3 levels and each in incremental as well as escalating training sections. It should not and cannot be assimilated in one session as many courses attempt. Each training session must be concentrated on one concept or target and this must be trained throughout the session to acclimate the Officer and make it a natural response. In turn each part of the level must have worth and diversity enough that the single method is not boring or of little value to some officers. The method must be usable by Male and Female, Young and Older, Novice and Experienced equally. Also the officers must be free to experiment with the presented material in session as it relates to needs they encountered in the field. This will make it real for them as well as help them integrate it in their natural responses. In this first level we address one human weakness and one reflexive reaction that

Kyusho Jitsu each Officer must not only be aware of, but to integrate into their methodologies. We also work with 12 initial points for this crucial stage of escalation, turning from verbal command to physical assertion. These are crucial elements in Law Enforcement as we see a rise in Female Officers (who face mostly larger stronger male criminals), as an equalizer for the aging Officers that are facing Younger, Stronger and Quicker perpetrators, also as a non-injurious yet more powerful way to manipulate and control the criminal even facing these disadvantages.

Human Weakness A universal human weakness is due to the influence of the right hemisphere control of the brain over the left physical actions of the body and vice versa. The human body has far more strength pulling as opposed to pushing due to more integration of muscles to facilitate this action. This is also in part because the pulling action moves the limbs toward the brain side in control. This is exactly the opposite of what most officers are taught or instinctively try to do (in their own natural pulling action), to get the arm of the perpetrator in position to move them, take them to the floor or even to position the arm for cuffing. Understanding. this one human trait can give the officer a distinct edge, even facing a larger stronger opponent As an example and way to test this process on your own, have a person attempt to use strength by pressing forward with arms extended. To push them back requires you to have more strength, size and even stamina in this position. But if you quickly cross their arms from the wrists to the elbows, the left-brain control for the right side body as well as the right brains control of the left body is temporarily lost and the perpetrator can be pushed very easily. This is because when you quickly cross their hands or arms, the brain becomes temporarily confused and the control and or strength of the body is weakened considerably. This can also be easily demonstrated with another action commonly needed and used on the arm, being to pull it to a laterally extended position. If you attempt to pull a persons arm sideways away from their body, the strength is at it's maximum. However if you push it toward the center, their resistance is less than half that original strength. To demonstrate this weakness again have a person stand with two arms extended forward. Feel the resistance and strength the person has when you attempt this action and how easily it is for them to keep heir arms in front of them. Now to illustrate how easy it is to push against their arm, have them start in the same posture with arms extended and feel how easy it is to now press their arms toward the center. To work this into a handcuffing procedure, the Officer, instead of pulling the perpetrators arm outward, should first push the arm toward the center and then as it temporarily weakens (it will be felt easily by the Officer), then continue pressing down in a circling motion and out to the side. Evan Pantazi the brain to regain control of the limb will be ample enough to get the arm in position. Naturally practicing this over and over again will develop the habit, skill and success needed.

Reflexive Reaction A reflexive action of the body is to maintain balance by instantaneous body reflex. As an example if you were on the deck of a boat in calm water you are able to stand quite easily unaided. If a sudden wave was to jolt and tilt the boat and your balance was jeopardized, your entire body would also jolt into a reflexive and reactive state. Arms shoot out to the sides for ballast and balance, as do the legs without conscious thought or a moment's hesitation. The hesitation comes after the reflexive reaction to monitor if balance was maintained. This illustrates the body when face with sudden force will strengthen as well, as the muscles tighten to react and gain wider posture to regain balance. To utilize this in a law enforcement application, we can initiate this reflex in a perpetrator. We learned from the Human Weakness mentioned above, that pressing the limbs in is substantially easier to accomplish than pulling away from the body. Well if you press the arm inward the whole body will weaken and as it does a quick pulse or push to offset the balance slightly will initiate this reflex reaction with arms and legs shooting outward to seek or maintain balance. Also mentioned was the hesitation factor after this reaction… this is the time when arms and legs are extended and no control or resistance will be possible. This is the moment that the Officer can gain advantage and to get the arm of the perpetrator in position to move them, take them to the floor or even to position the arm for cuffing. The opposite is also true as there is always a positive and a negative in everything. When a body is faced with strength it will respond with like strength and consequently muscle constriction and tightening. Strength must have a base to initiate and maintain from, so if the base is quickly removed the muscles must relax and consequently weaken the body. To illustrate this condition get into a clinch with a partner and instantly tighten your body, placing resistance or strength on them. Even without explanation, that pressure will initiate them do the same just as the reflexive reaction instantly takes hold. Now to gain the opposite response, just as quickly in any garb or strength match, relax to remove the base of their strength and initiate a total and unexpected relaxation, followed again by the hesitation factor as the brain and body monitor the balance. To utilize this in Law Enforcement, if you know that a sudden strength will cause their reflexive strength and your relaxing and un-basing this strength will weaken their whole body, you can apply pressure and wait for their resistance, then suddenly relax and remove all their strength and balance as well. Now again this is the moment that the Officer can gain advantage and to get the arm of the perpetrator in position to move them, take them to the floor or even to position the arm for cuffing.

Debriefing These two concepts are natural in response, but unnatural in the deliberate use. Just knowing these is not enough, as the feel and sensitivity must be trained initially. This is not a new program, but one that has been field tested by Law Enforcement Officers in many Countries and Legal Parameters. It has been not only successful on an individual basis for hundreds of Officers in the field, corrections or security, but it is now making its mark in departmentally and even on a governmental basis. Chapter I Once the stage of verbal command has been breeched by a perpetrator and the immediacy and threat threshold is escalated several physical limitations begin to hinder the Officers Physical performance. Such things as Tunnel Vision, Auditory Occlusion, loss of Fine or Complex Motor control, Body Tremors and subsequent weakening of the body. Any response protocol should involve this consideration and must have tactical responses in place for such need. It is to this goal that Kyusho becomes not only more efficient, but reliable as well.

Kyusho Jitsu Briefing There are several weak structures in the human body that can be utilized by an Officer to simply gain control of a perpetrator more efficiently than conventional use of force methods. This would be in the protocol should a situation escalate past the verbal command stage. These Kyusho (Vital) points are where the Officer can make use of internal systems of physical control such as, Nerves, Tendon Structure and natural Nerve Reflexes of the body. Not requiring heavy force Fine or complex motor control or even sight… all of which is subject to failure and loss in high adrenaline states. There are 12 main targets use in the first level in the Law Enforcement Program being non-ballistic Controls for maneuverability and safety. A breakdown of these target locations is as follows: • Arms - 4 Targets • Head - 2 Targets • Body - 3 Targets • Legs - 3 Targets

We will explore only one point at a time for easier training and assimilation Target #1 (L-8): This point lays in-between the radius bone and wrist tendons, two finger widths from the crease of the inner thumb side wrist. It is easily accesses with subtle non-invasive actions that will be undetectable for witnesses, readily available and the first line of control or defensive measure. It should be trained enough that any time an officer has the perpetrator by the wrist, the Officer's hand should naturally be in position to activate this nerve. Using the middle finger as it is the strongest and in the best area to access this nerve, position the fingertip so that the tendons do not buffer it. By slipping past the tendon it will allow you press the nerve directly against the Radial bone of the wrist. Once accessed and pressure applied, begin to stretch it toward the hand causing the most reaction and pain compliance. This works best in brief and sporadic application as prolonged use, will allow the perpetrator to develop tolerance to the pain and affect, gaining resistance. By quickly applied in a pulsing type application, the brain and body cannot prepare or resist the nervous reactions. Once applied there is an instant weakening where you can maneuver and control the perpetrator. Once maneuvered, if they begin to again resist, simply apply again, causing the same weakening, but easier due to the nerve still being tender. Again once the weakening reaction occurs position and control as needed. The point can be pressed, stretched or struck with a rubbing action. This point has many physical effects on the recipient: • Hand opens • Arm Weakens (Elbow and Shoulder drops) • Physical Strength diminishes • Knees weaken and buckles • Causes severe pain and body folding • Causes severe pain and temporary loss of thought and motor control Cuffing

The Law Enforcement Program

As one of the primary control positions supported by legal protocol and ethics in all jurisdictions worldwide, this becomes the main target for control. And as it is second nature to all Law Enforcement Officers, very little training time will be required and vast amounts of actual field application available. And of course as the officer gets more comfortable and automatic, the more potent it will become for so many situations. Let's start with getting the perpetrator for handcuffed from several search positions. Against a wall or on the hood of a car, maintaining a single wrist (or two Officers each having a wrist), not only is resistance now severely limited, but self activating as well. If the fingers are located correctly, when the perpetrator begins to pull their arm inward, the tension builds on the nerve using absolutely no reaction time or complicated analysis on the Officers part. It will get more painful and weaken their body more as they attempt to pull their arm in harder until the muscles of the arm fail and their resistance stops. Also once their arm muscles dysfunction they will not have the ability to support themselves with that arm, pressing their chest to the wall or vehicle with arm extended to the side. This affectively turns them away from the Officer for additional safety. Once the arm is weakened and consequently extended, placing a handcuff on that wrist is easier. By maintaining the grip on that wrist, another will again weaken their arm and leg allowing the Officer to pull them to extend the opposite arm for cuffing, or bring them to the ground for more control. If two Officers hold both wrists with this point, they can weaken both arms immediately to bring the body toward the wall, vehicle or ground if necessary.

Takedown To initiate a takedown so that the perpetrator is face down on the ground for and control and safety, the Officer can again use this point quite effectively. Pressing quickly and firmly as they pull toward the hand, this nerve will not only weaken the arms and body, but the legs as well. For a very effective takedown from a wrist grab position pulling the arm, as the Officer activates the nerve, will fell the perpetrator as the leg and body are too weak to stabilize or balance to resist the action. This easily off balances them as they fall safely on their side with arm still extended, all controlled by the Officer. The weakened and extended arm is now very easy to bring into position for cuffing.

Kyusho Jitsu Another way to take the opponent down is you have the Officer grab with his opposite arm to catch the wrist and press the Kyusho Point. Done well this again will weaken the whole arm, body and legs allowing the Officer to pull the arm back as if doing a classical Kotegaesh, but with just the wrist. This will prevent possible joint damage that could occur using the joint manipulation and allow the Officer to control the fall. With a simple pull of the arm the Officer can now roll the perpetrator on their face for the preferred and safer cuffing position. With either grip it is also very easy to simply apply enough pressure to collapse the whole body quickly with no additional pulling or arm maneuvering. While maintaining the grip on the wrist the officer has instant response, automatic response and total control for easy takedowns.

Releasing To release a grip on a weapon, another person or even the officer themselves, this point is invaluable. If the officer can gain the wrist grab so that their middle fingers can access this point, disarming and releasing the grip is quick and surprising for the perpetrator. (This element of surprise will be in the favor of the Officer for all Kyusho Point applications). Most of the time when a quick and rapid application on this nerve is affected, the hand can spring open releasing whatever the hold was on. Simultaneously it still weakens the arm and body taking most of the fight out of the perpetrator temporarily. This is especially useful for bladed weapons or sharp edges as those on a broken bottle where grabbing the weapon could prove injurious for the Officer. It is also invaluable against a smaller blade, razor or needle, where a safe grip is not possible. Nor is it considerable in this day and age of infectious disease such as aides or hepatitis. Again by applying strong and rapid pressure the grip springs open where the weapon is dislodged or a simple shake of the wrist will complete the disarming method. Still maintaining the control and cuffing position throughout the altercation. When a fight needs to be broken up and opponents separated, again this is not only viable, but a quick and reliable method, that again has each perpetrator in a preferred and controllable position by each officer. Or when someone grabs a railing or object to resist Officer control or arrest, this simple wrist point application as it weakens their arm, body and legs will easily allow the Officer to pull the person from the object. And as always in the position the Officer knows best.

Debriefing No damage, easy to use, fits into what you are already doing. This simple point will allow better efficiency, control and safety for arresting Officers. It must be said however that on certain narcotics where the person is agitated and their upper body is strengthened, such as with PCP, this point is less effective. In these instances the leg points we will describe in following articles will be very much more susceptible.

Chapter II Target #2 (TW-11): Also referred to as Golgi (or more accurately the Golgi Tendon Organ/Receptor), this is a rub only point. The faster and harder the rub the more reaction will occur and the more dramatic the result. This point is a favourite among Law Enforcement and Security Officers for the control and body dysfunction this can cause as well as for its versatility. The rub must occur up and down the tendon for results and can operate in two directions. Stretching the tendon with a hard surface such as knuckles then rapidly rubbing in the opposite direction will completely relax first the immediate area, but subsequently depending on the energetic input, the entire body. So as an example if you have a hold of an opponents wrist and with the knuckles of your other hand, first stretch this point up toward the shoulder, then rapidly cut back into the tendon toward the hand, the elbow and surrounding muscles will completely relax, followed by the body and legs. This will cause the opponent to go face down right at your feet, but by reversing the formula above

will drop them face down at more distance away from you. This second approach may be suitable in multiple person defence as a shield or barrier. A note here that when the elbow is bent more than 90 degrees, this point begins to recess and will not be as accessible or vulnerable. (Caution is also needed on force as elbow hyperextension, whiplash or other joint or spinal injuries are likely with quicker action). The point can be stretched or struck with a rubbing action. This point has many physical effects on the recipient: • Hand opens • Arm Weakens (locks out)

Location To locate this target easily by feel alone is easy and the preferred method as with all control targets of Kyusho. Placing your hand with the perpetrators elbow in the center of your palm and your fingers pointing toward their shoulder, simply clench your fist. Where the knuckles you would knock on a door with lay is directly over the target. You then use these knuckles to dig in with a rubbing action, up and down the length of the arm tendon (never across as there is no nerve affect), and as mentioned before but worth repeating, the faster the rub the more profound the reaction will be.

Control As one of the primary control positions supported by legal protocol and ethics in all jurisdictions worldwide, this Kyusho target will enable a smaller or a single Officer to gain the advantage and subsequent safety factor. And as it is second nature to all Law Enforcement Officers, to place their hands on the perpetrators elbow for control, very little training time will be required and vast amounts of actual field application available. Of course as the officer gets more comfortable and automatic in using this Kyusho Point, the more potent it will become for so many situations. The versatility and control factor is a major asset to any Law Enforcement, Security or Emergency Personnel. Let's start with getting the perpetrator under control and positioned for cuffing from several search positions: If you have the Perpetrator with hands up against a wall by simply placing your knuckles as mentioned above with a rubbing action, it will extend the arm as well as the opposite arm to weaken their base and allow for easier control procedures. If the Officer has the perpetrators hands on a vehicle hood, trunk or roof, the same activation as in the wall use can easily be applied. There will be different dynamics involved using the initial base of a vehicle, but training will easily allow the Officer to understand and just as easily cope with it. It will become more painful for the perpetrator and weaken their body more as they attempt to resist as the muscles of the arm fail and their muscle strength diminishes. Also once their arm muscles dysfunction they will not have the ability to support themselves with that arm, pressing their chest to the wall, floor or vehicle with arm extended to the side. This affectively turns them away from the Officer for additional safety. If the perpetrator is choking or grabbing the officer, by securing the wrist with one hand and applying the rubbing action with knuckles or forearm will immediately bring the assailant under control. With the choke it is very simple to grab their wrist and use the knuckle rub to extend their arm as you bring them into a control position. If an Officers wrist is grabbed, by merely circling that grabbed hand to in turn grab their wrist; it will be very quick and effortless to apply this target with knuckles or forearm. This will again splay the perpetrators body open as all limbs extend involuntarily and subsequently weaken the whole structure, controlling the attack and subduing them simultaneously. With practice it is also easy to stop any other following attack from that choke or grab as their body looses muscle control.

Kyusho Jitsu If the perpetrator is choking or grabbing a victim, the arresting officer can simply grab the wrist with one hand and again apply either the forearm or knuckles to rub and activate this target to affect the entire nervous reaction. The perpetrators other hand will also release as the body goes through the involuntary nerve reaction allowing complete release of the victim as well as simultaneous subduing and control of the attacker. Once the arm is weakened and consequently both arms extended, placing a handcuff on that wrist is easier. By maintaining the grip on that wrist, another will again weaken their arm and leg allowing the Officer to pull them to extend the opposite arm for cuffing, or bring them to the ground for more control. If two Officers hold both wrists with this point, they can weaken both arms immediately to bring the arms into controlled position. The use of the forearm, knees and shins will also be a useable surface for many needs as such valuable assets to train with. It is also necessary to add here that the use of baton in many positions can easily be assimilated into the practitioner's usable weapons against this Kyusho target.

Pinning The rubbing action as it weakens can then be used to pin the perpetrators arm against a surface such as a wall, vehicle or ground. This pressure like all Kyusho should be added in quick pulses of energetic transfer. Holding a target continuously will allow the body of the receiver to assimilate and then resist. A better method is to rapidly apply when you feel the perpetrator tensing to resist or when moving them into another position is mandated. This will relax the entire muscle system of the perpetrator and keep them off balanced and confused as well.

To affectively pin the perpetrator to the ground or other base only a small amount or physical exertion or pressure with the rubbing action will be needed. And because of its affect on the complete body, the application only needs to be on one elbow. This can easily be done with the Officers knee or shin to free both hands for cuffing, frisking or enabling a single officer to maintain the pin or control or until back up is available. The rub can be accomplished with the vibration of the Officers Knee, Shin, Forearm or Knuckles in a stationary position by simply moving the arm. This can be manually done by the controlling individual, or it can also be self-applied by the perpetrator as they attempt to pull away.

Cuffing Once the Kyusho Point is activated and the perpetrator under control, it is very easy to pin, takedown or manipulate the arm for cuffing. For a pin, holding the arm against the wall, vehicle or ground if necessary… will allow the time to retrieve and secure the cuff. By initiating the pin or takedown so that the perpetrator is face down on the ground for and control add the safety factor and is already protocol.

Kyusho Jitsu When a fight needs to be broken up and opponents separated, again this is not only viable, but a quick and reliable method, that again has each perpetrator in a preferred and controllable position by each officer. Or when someone grabs a railing or object to resist Officer control or arrest, this simple wrist point application as it weakens their arm, body and legs will easily allow the Officer to pull the person from the object. And as always in the position the Officer knows best.

Debriefing This point offers increased efficiency and affect for the Officer, with no damage, ease of use, and fitting into what you are already doing. This simple point will also allow greater safety for arresting Officers or Security Personnel. As mentioned in the last article, certain narcotics where the person is agitated and their upper body is strengthened, such as with PCP, this point is less effective. In these instances the leg points we will describe in following articles will be very much more susceptible. Once the leg weakens the individual this arm point is once again usable and very affective.

Chapter III Target #3 (TW-12): This point lies in the concave V shape of the Triceps muscle and responds to stretching or striking. This will cause the same amount of physical dysfunction as the TW-11, but in a different manner and with the added possibility of altered levels of awareness or consciousness. What is interesting to note when this point is manipulated well, the body will not react by dropping as one might expect but rather by lifting and spreading out as the body looses control. It can cause the opposite arm to extend making the landing that much more harsh as the hands cannot break the fall, when applied with sufficient force. This point can be more serious on weight lifters as the over exercising of the triceps muscle stretches and exposes the nerve better. An interesting note is that people more resilient to the Golgi rub associated with TW-11, will be more receptive to this point and those more resilient to the Triceps will be more susceptible on the TW-11 (Golgi Rub).

The point must be stretched with a pulsing motion or struck to penetrate to penetrate the layers of muscle and affectively compress the nerve against the bone to cause the nerve reaction. This point has many physical effects on the recipient: • Hand opens • Triceps muscle contracts • Arm weakens (locks out) • Opposite arm extends and comes back • Legs extend • Back arches

Kyusho Jitsu • Physical strength diminishes • Causes severe pain and temporary loss of thought and motor control

Location To locate this target easily, it is midway between the shoulder and elbow on the back of the arm. Where the triceps muscle forms an inverted V, the point is at the apex of that inverted V shape. Since there is another muscle overlying this point, a rapid pulse or striking action with a stretching motion will be necessary to facilitate the nerve and obtain the desired results. This is of primary importance to control the arm if the elbow is bent more than 90 Degrees. At this point the stretched position of the Golgi Tendon will mute the effects of the rub on the elbow point. However when the Elbow is in such a position, it does stretch the triceps region as well as the nerves underlying the muscle layers. Using this area not only accesses the nerve to release and relax the body, but also the physiological aspects of the Muscle Spindle Cells. In the body of each muscle is what is known as a Muscle Spindle Cell (MSC), which initiates a reflex action that cannot be controlled by the recipient. What the MSC does is monitor the length and stretch of a particular muscle. When the muscle fibers are sensed to be in danger of tearing from over stretching, the MSC reacts to contract the muscle. When the Triceps contracts the arm then is pulled straight. This will allow leverage to bring the perpetrator to the ground or to allow further action to the TW-11, L-8 or both simultaneously. When these targets are used in succession or in synchronized manner they augment each other with multiplied weakening and more control over the subject. Or if control of the arm using any one of these single targets is not possible, access to the proximal target/s will be. Also of benefit for the Officer is that this nerve reaction is universal and immediate so that the perpetrator is mentally and physically kept off balance. As we affect the nervous system of the body via pain impulse and loss of motor control, the mind of the recipient will be temporarily void of conscious thought and subsequent actions. First impeded are planning thoughts as the immediacy of the event takes precedence. If the planning capability is removed, then the reaction process is what remains. Thus the perpetrator is only able to comply as opposed to thinking of offensive action. Again as this is one of the primary control positions supported by legal protocol and ethics in all jurisdictions worldwide, this Kyusho target or combination of targets will enable a smaller or a single Officer to gain the

advantage and subsequent safety factor. And as it is second nature to all Law Enforcement Officers, to place their hands on the perpetrators wrist, elbow and or upper arm for control, so very little training time will be required and vast amounts of actual field application available. Of course as the officer gets more comfortable and automatic in using this and other Kyusho targets, the more potent it will become for so many situations. The versatility and control factor is a major asset to any Law Enforcement, Security or Emergency Personnel.

Control Following with the training of reflex reaction, where the temporary un-basing of the opponent's strength is utilized, we can access and manipulate these targets to a higher degree as we also unbalance the perpetrator more. The following are some training scenarios for placing the perpetrator under control and positioned for cuffing from several search positions: 1. Grabbing the perpetrators wrist from an outer position, have them resist and pull the arm in past a 90degree bend in the elbow. Attempt to use the TW-11 with a penetrating rub to realize its limitation from this position. Then, while still maintaining the outer wrist position, use your opposite forearm to strike the TW-12 (with a

Evan Pantazi stretching action to the Triceps Muscle) to now understand how it will relax the arm structure, or if done with sufficient force, splay open the perpetrators body while lifting the body and descend toward the ground. Also then incorporate the relaxed grip to initiate the un-based reflexive response and then apply for increased results. 2. If you have the Perpetrator with hands up against a wall and they begin to push away from the wall, strike the TW-12 target to extend the arm as well as the opposite arm to weaken their base as they flatten out on the wall, which will allow for easier control procedures. If the Officer has the perpetrators hands on a vehicle hood, trunk or roof, the same activation can easily be applied. There will be different dynamics involved using the initial base of a vehicle, but training will easily allow the Officer to understand and just as easily cope with it. Once their arm muscles dysfunction they will not have the ability to support themselves with that arm, pressing their chest to the wall, floor or vehicle with arm extended to the side.

Kyusho Jitsu 3. If the perpetrator is choking or grabbing an officer or civilian, by securing the wrist with one hand and applying the striking action with knuckles or forearm, will immediately bring the assailant under control. This method will extend their arms as they release their victim.

Pinning Whereas the TW-11 is more versatile in pinning the arm with a rubbing action against a surface such as a wall, vehicle or ground, the TW-12 is best utilized only on the ground for a pin. However even though it is less versatile, there is less chance of escape due to a lack in the perpetrators range of motion. As the arm is outstretched on the ground a kneeling or standing position on the Triceps target will pin the arm in a stronger position. The standing position is ideal for an assisting officer as it effectively controls the perpetrator for the securing officer in searching or cuffing. It also allows the standing officer to survey the area for other dangers and or increased safety of the searching or cuffing officer. For a single officer, kneeling on this target with the shin will secure the perpetrator well. The pressure, like all Kyusho control and restraint methods should be added in quick pulses of energetic transfer. Holding a target continuously will allow the body of the receiver to assimilate and then resist. A better method is to rapidly apply when you feel the perpetrator tensing to resist or when moving them into another position is mandated. This will relax the entire muscle system of the perpetrator and keep them off balanced and confused as well.

Releasing To release a grip on a weapon, another person or even the officer themselves, this point is invaluable. If the officer can access this point, disarming and releasing the grip is quick and surprising for the perpetrator. (This element of surprise will be in the favor of the Officer for all Kyusho Point applications). Most of the time when a quick and rapid application on this nerve is affected, the hand can spring open releasing whatever the hold was on. Simultaneously it still weakens the arm and body taking most of the fight out of the perpetrator temporarily. Evan Pantazi 2. All Muscles on the Human Body contain MSC's. The reaction will always be the same in that the stretched muscle will then contract. Depending on the location and the functionality of the muscle, the reactions must be understood. As an example; Stretching the Quadriceps Muscle will lock out the leg, whereas stretching the hamstring will fold the leg from these contractions.

Chapter IV Target #4 (H-2): This important nerve target is at the elbow region, one of the most important control areas of the human anatomy. It's versatility lay in the fact that it can be accessed from inside or outside the perpetrators arm and with either hand. It needs only fingertip pressure or manipulation to place the individual into complete control. As it will always be an area that Law Enforcement Agents will try to secure, it is imperative to

understand how to make it more efficient and effective. Another critical aspect is in how it can weaken and control the entire body with such minimal power or force. The benefit here has two components, first in that smaller or individual Officers can control larger individuals and that because so little force is needed the movements will not be detectable by onlookers nor can they be seen as inappropriate or abusive force levels. Muscularity also is not a factor in the use of this target as it lies between muscles and is actually weakened if the individual has developed their arm muscles. This is due to the larger space created when the muscles grow and tighten leaving easier and wider access. The other factor in is that when the muscles are contracted and developed, it stretches all surrounding physical structure, in this case the Ulna Nerve, which makes it more responsive and sensitive.

Kyusho Jitsu Location To locate this target easily by feel alone is easy and the preferred method as with all control targets of Kyusho. Place your hand just above the perpetrators elbow and with your middle two fingers feel the hollow pocket between the Biceps and Triceps muscles. As you rub your fingers against the upper arm bone (Humerus), you will feel a string like object. As you press and pluck it, you will also note an electrical shock travel from the nerve down to the small finger. This is the correct way to manipulate this nerve on the individual to gain control. Constant pressure is also viable, but eventually the pressure will cause numbing and the individual will then be able to resist it. The best way to quickly find the point through tactile response is to simply place the palm of the hand on the bicep so that the small finger side edge is in the crease of the elbow. As you obtain this position, your middle two fingers will be at the correct spacing from the elbow joint. They simply need to then press the nerve into the underlying bone for control. The thumb can also be used in this manner, but does not offer the same strength, control or security as the longer stronger and braced middle fingers. It is also possible from a reverse type grip where your hand is placed with the palm on the back of the elbow at the same distance, this time with the index finger being the measuring device. It is strongly recommended that the Officer also obtain a grasp on the wrist of the perpetrator as well so that escape from the simple elbow grab will not occur. There is great flexibility in many double hand grips that are possible so the Officer can employ this target from any positional angle. This point also has many physical effects on the recipient: • Hand weakens • Electrical shock travels to the small finger • Biceps muscle contracts • Shoulder and arm weakens • Elbow moves in the direction of pressure • Body turns • Knees come up feet loose contact with the ground. • Waist folds forward • Physical strength diminishes • Causes severe pain and temporary loss of thought and motor control

Control This grip on the elbow is a primary control position supported by legal protocol and ethics in all jurisdictions worldwide, As it is second nature to all Law Enforcement Officers, to place their hands on the perpetrators elbow for control, very little training time will be required and vast amounts of actual field application available making this a secure and valuable

Kyusho Jitsu method. As the officer also gets more comfortable or automatic from continuous deployment, the more effect and possible uses they will they will be able to accomplish. The versatility and control factor is a major asset to any Law Enforcement, Security or Emergency Personnel. This target is extremely useful in bending the elbow to gain control or distance on a larger individual. By pulling the nerve into the underlying bone the surrounding tendons and muscles loose control and become relaxed. The exception is the biceps muscle, which will contract slightly from pain withdrawal reflex. By placing pressure on the point the elbow can be pushed or pulled in any direction, which will also cause the individual to turn for directional control. This allows the officer to bend the elbow and turn the individual to walk or guide them and or bring the arm behind them for cuffing position. The Officer must be aware of this turn and move in accordance so as not to be open for a spinning escape or attack scenario. Or by pulling the elbow tightly in toward the chest a more secure position and hold can be obtained. Hand positions may need to be changed or adjusted in accordance to the motions of the perpetrator. For an extended arm, the officer can press or pluck this nerve to cause the elbow to bend and gain closer range for additional manipulation and subsequent control. If the arm is in a tightly folded position and can not be withdrawn from the body, (and as long as the Officer can obtain contact with the point), by pulling or plucking this nerve against the bone it will weaken the shoulder and arm muscles to allow the extension or and or extraction of the limb. If a perpetrator has their hands in their pockets, and is pushing them into an extended position to hold the arm in place, an easy way to remove it quickly and avoid struggle is to first grab the wrist and elbow, apply the pressure to the nerve to weaken the entire arm and lift the elbow up and hand out. If the perpetrator had a grip on a weapon, narcotics or other object in their pocket, the weakened arm and hand will not be able to maintain a firm grip on it, giving the Officer a greater margin of safety. (As a side note, using the prior arms points and controlling methods in conjunction with this target will increase efficiency, effect and security). If the individual is lying face down with their hands held under their chest and elbows out to the side, in an attempt to avoid Officer control, this target can be rubbed

into the bone to cause extreme pain and release of the held position. This will result in a quick (and temporary) release of arm muscle strength as the body arches off and away from the targeted arm. This will allow the Officer an opportunity to pull the arm out straight and employ additional targets (keeping individual weakened), or to gain further control through positioning. As the elbow is lifted, the body will subsequently fold, as the leg on the targeted side will also lift. This will break the perpetrators base and balance making it easier to lead or position them. Also once the base or balance is disturbed, the individual can easily be taken down to the ground for the officers increased safety for additional control, search or cuffing.

Pinning It is not suggested to use this target to pin an individual as it does cause a withdrawal and body rotation. However a quick directed pressure could shock and weaken the body enough to gain further control as long as the Officer is aware of the reactions that will occur.

Debriefing All Kyusho targeting offers increased efficiency, known outcome and affect for the Field Officer, with no damage, ease of use, and minor refinement and focus what is already employed. However there are certain narcotics where the person

Chapter V Target #6 (M-HN-18): The mental nerve is a somatic, (sensory) nerve that includes the special fibers that help keep the body assimilated with its surroundings, such as those involved in touch. The somatic nervous system also consists of peripheral fibers that send sensory information to the central nervous system and motor nerves. These fibers project to skeletal muscle, for voluntary muscle control. This is a very versatile point that yields fast and predictable reactions that once the Officer is aware of, can affect very easily. By compressing this nerve the body will weaken quickly and substantially. It will respond well to the soft tissue of the fingertips, but will yield far better results with pressure from a knuckle. The nerve should be pressed down and in toward the throat to affectively compress it against the bone. This simple action has many physical effects on the recipient: • Neck Weakens allowing the head to be turned or maneuvered easily. • The body below the neck level also weakens and looses control, first in the legs. • Torso folds in accordance to pressure applied. • Arms extend. • Physical strength diminishes. • Causes severe pain and temporary loss of thought and motor control.

jaw. This is where the mental nerve exits a hole in the jawbone called the mental foramen as pictured. By pressing the nerve downward and inward toward the throat, the receiver will experience some severe pain, withdrawal reflex as the chin turns away from the pressure. The legs weaken, torso will fold in as the arms come upward and forward. This will allow the officer the ability to bring the perpetrator to the ground and turn them face down for rapid control. The recipient will loose not only strength, but also balance as a quick penetrating pressure causes a more dramatic and complete result. This rapid pulse will cause confusion, and loss of coherent thought (and thoughts of escape or attack), temporarily. This will allow the Officer greater time for the control or restraint measures.

By utilizing a single point, you will be able to roll the person into a face down position if on their back, or get them face down from a seated position. This is ultimately safer and quicker for the Officer as it not only causes pain and physical weakening, but again this method makes it very difficult for the recipient to think clearly enough to formulate an escape or retaliatory action. In each single point application it also turns the head so that spitting will not be possible to direct at the Officer.

Releasing

control an individual that can see your approach to avoid or counter. This is because man has an aversion, as well as a natural instinct, to pull away from anything approaching the head. So this is not a recommended target to gain control from the frontal position unless the perpetrators arms are already involved in an action. But once reached it is a very powerful point that can stop the action cold. This target can be easily obtained from the rear, as offender will not have the visual queue to cause avoidance, counter measures or subsequent withdrawal reaction to avoid it. This will however take just a bit more practice, as the Officer must reach around to the front side of the face to pull back and down. But with the practice, this blind move can easily be achieved through tactile method and experience. Not only do you have a powerful weakening and control factor with this point, but also pulling in toward the body is a stronger and more secured action. One other note on this technique on target is that the withdrawal away from the pain will bring the individual into a strong base. This can cause further confusion and retaliatory action by the recipient. The mode of operation with this approach would be to get the individual first seated and then into a face down position as required by the Officer. This can be utilized in a one on one situation, or by one Officer to maneuver the Individual in a position of advantage for their partner. One situation that many Officers encounter is when the perpetrator attempts to swallow drugs to avoid confiscation and proof of illegal possession. If an Officer can get to the person before the drugs are swallowed, they can quickly render the individual incapable of swallowing at all. This is accomplished by using both side targets simultaneously, pressing them both down and in to compress the chin down to the chest. As a simple test, attempt to swallow in a normal position and note the result. Next just place you chin on your chest and swallow again, it becomes more labored and difficult. Then press your chin to your chest harder and you will feel the swallow is even more difficult if at all possible; it will be even more so as the pressure and pain level from using the nerve is increased. With enough pressure the pain and discomfort will cause the recipient to open their mouth to make the extraction possible. Another factor is when a perpetrator is taken down, seated or laying flat on their back it is more of a danger to

When a fight needs to be separated or a grip released and opponents then separated, this point yields a more reliable and safer method over traditional neck or headlock applications. First it prevents the perpetrators ability for biting as a direct assault on the Officer and in today's world of diseases, this is a critical concern. Also it can limit possible counter suit and legal proceedings as a struggle during a bite can cause damage to teeth, jaw and neck of the user, placing the Officer in further peril even after the arrest or controlling action. Another benefit using this target has over non-target oriented restraints is in the individual's reflexive actions, which cause escalation and conflict more readily. By grabbing an individuals arms or body to attempt to release the grip or stop an action, reflexively causes the individual to fight the attempted control as they then struggle to escape the ensuing restrictive method. By quickly applying one target from a handgrip, rear choke style maneuver, or side headlock position, this reflexive action and struggle to escape is negated. It is again safer for the both the Officer or recipient over these typical positions as it and is not a possible threat to the throat or neck that another neck or head control can cause. By securing the head with this point instead, the neck is not directly grabbed to inflict possible injury from further struggle by the individual. This again is due to the instant body weakening, loss of balance and orientation the nerve causes. And where the recipient looses control of their body and is left confused or disoriented, an escalation or resisting action from them is less likely. Or if an individual has secured a grip on an object to resist Officer control or arrest, applying the correct directional force to this point will weaken their arms, body and legs easily allowing the Officer to pull the person from that object. The action can then be continued until the perpetrator is placed in a face down position for handcuffing. In a more desperate situation where the officer is on the ground with an assailant mounted on top grabbing or swinging, this point will drop the arms down and away from the officer. Then with a turn of their head (possible from weakened neck and arm muscles), they can be dislodged from their position of advantage. When controlling the head of the individual, the body must follow.

Debriefing When using nerve related targets the results are quicker, use less physical strength, have predictable results for more reliable control possibilities. From a safety standpoint the officer using less force is also less likely to inflict damage as well as the perpetrator not being able to resist. As it also disorients the recipient, escalations in physical, emotional and mental frustration or retaliatory thoughts are also limited severely. All around these simple targets keep both Officers and Perpetrators safer and situations less violent.

Teaching Martial Arts is a mission that doesn’t get easier with age and with time, I gradually close and cut my circle through understanding that the smaller the circle, the less you need to worry about snakes and rats. At the same time, I push my students and instructors to try, always try - don't be afraid to fail, be afraid not to have tried in the first place. Martial Arts is a life time study and no one way is always right. You learn nothing from life if you think you're right all the time. Over the years, I’ve seen how many times people say they can’t or they can and it all comes down to your will and spirit, as the saying goes “Whether you think you can or you can’t you're right.”

y journey of Sensei on the Road started many years back as I never stopped traveling and studying while at times also teaching. It takes me back to the war in 1982 as I saw how many eyes were lost in the dark. To see this transformation is the most beautiful thing in the world, watching the light come on in someone’s eyes when they have been lost in the dark for so long. This is something you can’t put a price on, bringing this light back into lives again, whether they are human or animals. Even by saving a stray cat or dog, you will notice how the eyes light up once someone reaches down into the darkness to bring them into the light.

In my recent trip to Argentina, it was great to see so many students and teachers brought back into the light through training after so much time being locked down with Covid restrictions and regulations. This helped raise me up and bring some light back into my life, as we see things going back to normal and the distance that separated us being forgotten during the seminar. While the travel isn’t always easy, the reward of seeing so many eyes filled with light and joy was worth it.

When I landed in Buenos Aires, I met with two old friends, Sensei Maximo Sanchez and Fabian Garcia, who have been with me so long on this Martial Arts Journey, from Kapap Krav Maga to BJJ and Mobility Survival to Army skills training, a total of nearly 20 years. It’s as we say, “Blood makes us related, but Loyalty makes us family” and we shared so many travels to Chile, Brazil, Amazon, Patagonia. It was a wonderful experience to be able to see so many familiar faces from my teams from Bolivia, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, even though we missed some members that could not make it due to ongoing Covid issues.

There is a saying “No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” and is same for the river of Martial Arts. When we started our journey almost 20 years ago, many things have changed... some students passed away, even during my visit we lost another great soul, but it’s part of the circle of life. Some students have changed and many old students who we continuously training, such as Marcelino who was like a step son for me since he was a child, and now he is Shihan Santi Garcia. It’s wonderful to see such talent flourish in a martial artist who was my Uke for so many years. To teach is to study and explore and during my time studying Argentinean and South American culture we learned so much. From the drink chimarrão or cimarrón, which is known as Mate as well as the Gaucho, the nomadic and colorful horsemen and cowhands of the Argentine and Uruguayan Pampas (grasslands), who flourished from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century and has remained a folk hero similar to the cowboy in western North America. We hosted a traditional Gaucho at our camp to teach and explain and demonstrate his art and culture and we let students spar in the traditional Gaucho ways.

Sensei on the Road We started traveling at first light and set a big fire to bring light and spirit to the training, followed by “Kapap-oeira” where we take mobility and dance from Capoeira and fuse it with the rhythm and fighting movements that I picked up during my time teaching in Angola. We studied breaking the rhythm mid flow with half beat movements as tactics in a fight while letting all the students explore and study so many mobility and acrobatic moves and drills to improve their body control. All day we studied different training that ended at midnight with a paramedic class to share first aid, as many who carry a gun or a knife don’t know how to dress wounds that they may need to cause in combat, which is a critical component of being a responsible Martial Artist. In the near future, we will share a few more articles from our travels to South America, as Kyoshi Fabian Garcia has also served as a Sensei on the Road for so many years and can share so many stories from his experience.

The problem we have in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is that many practitioners drop out after achieving a blue belt. This is because for most GJJ practitioners, the blue belt is not only considered the "first" higher level, but the understanding of the fundamentals, which is very important in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, is achieved. Master Frisan starts a new series of DVDs on the best Kyusho points for different situations. Light attracts butterflies It is often said that light attracts butterflies, this is also true in martial arts and combat sports. Indeed, as soon as a practitioner or teacher succeeds in his field, he is then put in the spotlight and people who had not contacted him for years come back to him as if by magic. This is also the case in many fields such as winning the lottery for example. What is shocking in martial arts is that our schools teach respect, honor, righteousness and so many values that should guide us throughout our lives and not only in the dojo.

Sifu Delannoy artial arts are a school of life and allow us to face life so difficult sometimes. These transmitted values are essential to live in community and in peace with all the men and women around us in the world. Moreover, these values have as a primary goal to inculcate in us rules of good conduct and honor. Honor is a word that has less and less meaning for many in our daily lives. But without honor, we do not respect anything and especially not our word and our commitments. Indeed, in our consumer society where everything is bought and sold, the only thing that remains is our honor. Without honor we are nothing. This is taught in every self-respecting club. We teach the honor of our word and the respect of those who have guided us and allowed us to reach our goals. Because of this, ancient martial traditions are passed down from generation to generation, resulting in heirs over the centuries who have carried on everything they have been taught. The survival of a system or style is by no means limited to combat, but also to the value of the warriors who represent the style. Without honor and respect, the warrior may use his art to assault, steal or kill for money. These acts are totally condemned by the great masters who have always tried on the contrary to train, through their styles, people respectful of life, who will never hesitate to use their techniques to protect the weakest and in no case the opposite to use their techniques to attack the weakest.

We then witness a permanent change of teachers, going to those who will flatter us the most and not to those who will tell the truth about our real level. The student or the teachers in training, want everything to go fast and do not accept any criticism to improve their level. They want a title, to be known and recognized. However, nothing is required, everything is earned through hard work and patience. Martial arts are a school of patience and self-discovery. It often takes a lifetime to discover oneself and not a weekend to acquire a true martial level and consciousness. Our conscience guides us to do good and avoid doing evil. Without it, people are adrift and are only selfish and greedy. Only their own welfare counts and that of others has no meaning and no value. For that, they are ready to betray all those who helped them to build themselves, and without any regret.

Jeet Kune Do For example, we see competitors leaving their coach who helped them reach the top, to go to a coach who promises them more fame and money earned. In some movies, we see this and often the competitor loses everything because he broke the rules and by wanting to go too fast and did not respect the steps of his evolution. Like a butterfly that has to go through the chrysalis stage before becoming a beautiful butterfly recognized by all. Transformation takes time and if a step is not respected, it will have consequences sooner or later.

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. Interview Budo International.: Dear Sifu, how are you and SI-Mo after this period of pressure for Marta Arts and people? Sifu Alfred Neudorfer.: As always, SI-Mo and I are very optimistic about the future. Difficulties are always an opportunity for necessary adjustments and changes. We humans like to hold on to everything, but life keeps challenging us. Budo Inter national.: How are you handling your work with your students during the pandemic? Sifu Alfred Neudorfer.: From day one we have offered Zoom online units in both children and adult classes. The teaching programs have been adapted to online teaching.

Budo International.: What was there reactions? Sifu Alfred Neudorfer.: The reactions were consistently positive. Kajukenbo is an eclectic and versatile system that was born as a useful and credible tool for self-defense in modern times, it is not a martial art of sports or traditional profile and therefore its learning is suitable for all types of people whatever their condition and in which there is only one premise according to its creator Sijo Emperado. "Fight to train, train to fight, fight to win.... go for broke". The standard techniques, above all, have to serve as a model of application of different wellstructured basic principles whose purpose is purely efficiency, sometimes even supported by the ability of creative improvisation. This is basically achieved by training different combinations of the same principles and avoiding their excessive mechanization. Every aggressor has a plan or a predetermined intentionality, so it is unquestionable to be extremely effective in the blocking and subsequent response by correctly using coordination and synchronization to break the opponent's initiative and position ourselves with advantage, and as Emperado said, suffocate him with quick and forceful bursts of blows in specific areas and move with dynamic and overwhelming transitions that prevent the aggressor's reaction.

For 4 decades, Patrick Levet has been involved in the propagation of Vietnamese martial culture. It is now time to move on to a more precise and detailed description of this form of combat, but also of its various forms of evolution which are the Vật de Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo and the Vật de Vovinam Integral. With this new DVD, Vietnamese Vat is presented in a completely new way. Instead of simply filming the techniques of the official program, fixed and without real application, Vat is shown in its traditional form detailing its main aspects (dress, refereeing, ritual, techniques, counter-attacks, tactics), its technical evolutions, as well as its differences, demonstrating why such evolutions occurred. This discipline is completely unknown to the general Western public despite being thousands of years old. The art of Vật is composed of hundreds of techniques and variations. However, the Vật techniques in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo do not represent the proportion they deserve, only 28 techniques, despite the fact that the Founding Master was a Vật fighter. At Vovinam Integral we have tried to remedy this by adding many traditional Vật techniques, with over a hundred attack techniques (takedowns and projections) making up the overall program. To that we must add all the counter attacks for each takedown and projection technique as well as the defenses once on the ground. All this is complemented by all the techniques of compression, arm and leg locks, strangulation and choking, immobilization and controls, many of which are drawn from Jiu-jitsu, as is already the case in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo.

Hagumo Culture - Resolutions Following our study of details on the Shizen culture, today we will highlight some points of what they called “Bungaire” - Resolutions. It could be, and everything seems to aim in that direction, that the Shizen's originality in the way of conceiving the “I”, turns out to be the basis of understanding in the most important circumstances. The teaching that marks this position induces the idea that we all have a starting and finishing point in our minds. Recognizing ourselves and, consequently, others, was the basis of the teaching transmitted by Oita sages. To this end, they taught that the “I” must make use of the “Gisei” or inner sacrifice. Getting rid of ourselves is nothing more than abandoning appearances and going beyond ourselves and others. We can assume that, most likely, when the miscegenation with the Japanese people arises, there is also a new ideological elaboration for this appropriation of the empirical individual, now in the aspect of the "I" within the idea of knowing himself and others However, what terrified the ancient Shizen was not the sin, as Westerners know it; they were much more afraid of the “Omei”, a kind of “mark” or “stain”, which they believed possessed a capacity for ideological contamination, a stain independent of the intentions of the culprit, and contracted in turn by the imperfections of their successors.

The Moon is also seen in two ways: • Chiefly, as a container that, as the moon grows and pales, fills with life, giving a liquid soma, which, when ingested, brings “immortality”, and is also a symbol of the water that gives life usually. • Then as a door to the “Kingdom of Heaven”, along with the wind (breath), water, fire, luminosity and the Sun.

In their comparative study, today we can say that the Shizen used the idea that there is a void that regulates the observer and the observed. In that exercise, they ignored the cause and effect relationship and forced themselves into the configurations of ideas and values. They said that to arrive at the fundamental relationships, which are implicit in them, the being must see from different perspectives: • Eme: what the moment and actuality presents to the real eyes. • Shinri: what role does the fact play in relation to the whole. • Emekae: what it feels like to look back at the world that has been abandoned. • Toho: Everything from a distance lacks reality; • Itoshi: the discovery of the Self confuses us. Yamamoto Sensei used to say that it is Itozoko i.e. the person who disappears. A kind of “abandonment”.

Shizen's Thankfulness At least in the generations that I have had the opportunity to meet and live with, gratitude marks a milestone of true importance. For older masters, to be ungrateful is to enter into total negativity with "the whole". They called this “Kuno”: what cannot be or happen. Masters taught how important it is recognizing that life is utilitarian and respecting its defensive and protective utilitarianism. On the other hand, real internal life doesn't allow itself to be soiled by

external changes or oscillations. Shizen’s story points to gratitude as a great virtue, and in this respect, they claim that virtues must enhance life, develop it and not suffocate it. Let's see: From this point of view, gratitude is divided into some parts, for within its idiosyncrasy, the correct vision that is taught is the one that doesn't only act through impressions. As the latter are what build the instant, in

order to be balanced - here I point out a different vision of balance -, the being that crosses it should not be just a "point" in an idealistic process that loses contact with reality, nor a positivist denier of any idealism. Reality and idea are the two extremes of constant thought in Shizen culture. Inner evolution means that each personal journey represents the today and tomorrow of our life; they are two

poles of our world, between which all our movements oscillate and take place. Therefore, gratitude is considered something essential that transcends the limitations of time, and this is an important point to keep in mind. Let me explain: • Uugero: time that someone dedicated to you as a child. In the past, all this time was considered as something that allowed your life to gain strength and reason (children and young people). • Hogure: the time spent learning something - walking, running, talking, communicating with others, learning... Then it was divided into the reasons that encourage other reasons. •Amarigero: gratitude to someone who had taught you a trade. •Amarihogu: gratitude to someone who had shown you the right way to go.

When life was already understood and lived in its difficulties, thankfulness acquired another proportion: •Mukohire: gratitude for some help in hard times. • Mugehire: gratitude for some help in moments of lack of vision, confusion... (alluding to the moments in which we receive advice, teachings, words...) Finally, the greatest gratitude was for those who had taken care of your life or your honor. • Amarisemige: gratitude for something related to life. • Amarimeyma: gratitude for something related to your honor or that of your family. The Shizen taught that in order to advance on the path of life, one cannot ignore the past or the elders, since everything that exists is the result of yesterday. And the latter, if attacked, reacts! This type of teaching indicates a vision that the past must be lived, making it evolve. For the Shizen there really existed two types of gratitude: the current one, daughter of the past, and the one that anticipates the future. Both correspond to two levels of evolution and are a consequence of the mental form and the laws that govern the life of everyone, from the most lucid to the most asleep. From each of these two truths a specific ethic is derived, because both coexist: the lower, convenient, practiced by the majority; and the other, followed by a minority, and which is the exception to the common rule.

I have been involved with martial arts since I was a kid and over thirty years of that as a Gracie (Brazilian) Jiu-Jitsu instructor. I really love what I do because it fulfills me one hundred percent every single day. I would like to thank all our r eaders for giving me this great opportunity to share my thoughts with them all. I remember very well the day Master Rorion Gracie presented me with my blue belt at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, Los Angeles. He said, “...well my friend, I hope you continue your Jiu-Jitsu journey with us and remain committed as you have been up to now; I hope not that you have just jumped on a bandwagon!” I had never thought of it that way, nor was the blue belt that important to me, even though we had invested a lot of time, sweat and money. The most important thing for me was to spend every single moment together with my brother Demetrio on the Tatame, learning new things and deepening what was known. I would like to thank the dear God and my parents for always supporting us and for allowing me to learn like this with the Gracie family. At this moment, when the whole world has been in a disastrous and dramatic situation for a very long time, when political unrest is getting stronger and stronger, when the global economy will have a hard time recovering, when millions of people have to live more and more under existential fears, and when families and life partners are separating because they are overwhelmed by different problems and don't know what to do; exactly now it is important to give people something authentic... and thanks to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu I am 100% convinced that I can actually do it, day in and day out.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu Table conversations… Sitting in a pleasant restaurant and having a good meal or going for a drink in the nearest bar with your Jiu-Jitsu colleagues after an intense training session, is also a great opportunity to cultivate friendship and camaraderie. Not only do you get to talk about your training, but you also get to know the people around you better. When I was much younger, it was normal to meet for a drink after (almost) every training session; but today people seem to have no time left. Time controls humanity! Everyone is in a hurry to get to the next task.... but every now and then, I manage to get some of my Jiu-Jitsu colleagues and members, after training, to literally “drag” with them to spend some time together. In the end, everyone is again glad to have been there and to have taken this valuable opportunity.

Vacirca Brothers In fact, it already starts to get interesting as soon as drinks and food are ordered. Some order a large beer, others a bottle of wine or even simply a sparkling water... Food: oh yes! From “...I need a huge piece of meat!”, to “...am a vegetarian or even vegan!”, ...all are represented! In most cases, this is when the table is (almost) declared a “Tatame” zone! The “for and against” the consumption of meat and fish products, or whether the vegetarians and vegans eat better than everyone else, becomes the (momentary) main discussion, or at least until everyone has gotten their food on the table. Therefore, a little tip: make sure when choosing a restaurant that there is a lot of variation.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu The next round of conversation begins, at the latest, when the first questions arise, for example, why you started at all with the martial arts or with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu... and you do not have to wait long for that guaranteed! Then comes soon, also the question whether one has already seen or followed this or that on YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram... But one of the top topics is and remains, the hot question whether one can defend oneself (also with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu) against “multiple opponents” at the same time! No other topic occupies our (western) martial arts or combat sports world like this, whether you train Kickboxing, Kung-fu, Karate or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu!

Vacirca Brothers Multiple opponents… Since my childhood, this question of whether a martial artist can really defend against multiple opponents has always been present; whether I was interested in Wing-Chun Kung-Fu, Muay Thai boxing, Filipino martial arts, or later in Gracie JiuJitsu.... one could almost believe that only those who can defend themselves against “several” opponents at once, master the whole martial art! Even then, even like today, I was always very skeptical when I heard that a fighting style (or a master) could fight against “several” people at the same time. Already the fight against a single person requires a lot of strength, endurance and above all great skill... let's imagine to be attacked all at once against several opponents at the same time, be it armed and/or unarmed! If someone fights against more than one person at the same time, I will ask the question: “How good or bad were the attackers in this case?”

Martial arts marketing… When I started Judo, I was told that a Judo master could throw his opponent to the ground with a mere throw and put him out of action. Then in Kung-fu, it was said that the Kung-fu master could even kill a person with a single punch if he wanted to. Today in the time of MMA and UFC we have learned a lot of new things about this topic and that is a good thing. Those “masters and experts” who needed these marketing slogans even then (as well as today) also used to say that they could fight against multiple attackers! Let's also be honest, only the very few among us, thank God this is so, never had to use their martial arts in a real street situation. And to think that a little “cage” training will make them a super streetfighter is also completely wrong. At this point, I may be too hard on them, but if I were to give my students false hope, the only thing missing would be telling them (my members) that through Gracie Jiu-Jitsu they would even develop some sort of “universal power” and soon be able to levitate!

Vacirca Brothers Stay true to yourself… Why should honesty separate us from good people? Mutual respect is the golden rule in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, and I believe in other true martial arts as well. Who expects to be enlightened via martial arts training? On the path of the “warrior” I believe that part of the learning process is to be confronted with the limitations of the style and find ways to evolve. For a special reason you have chosen this style for yourself, and at the first hurdle you give up? Masters and teachers who are not interested in being confronted with reality are, in my eyes, people who are afraid of losing their position and control of its members. These are for me rather a kind of martial arts gurus of our time.

Secret technique… Closely related to the ability to defeat more than one attacker, these masters also more often use to make their followers believe that they will impart “ancient and secret” knowledge, of course only when the student has reached a higher degree or is willing to dig deep into the wallet. What kind of secret techniques are you talking about? Is there such a thing? In my humble opinion, the secret in martial arts, as in life, is the self-acquired and years of experience! And you cannot buy, sell, give, or bequeath. When you have gained experience, it makes you stronger, but we must also accept the fact that you have limits and may make the same mistake several times before you realize it. Making mistakes is part of it and no one can say they are mistake free or have never made mistakes. As a self-defense instructor, sooner or later you will be confronted with the question of how to deal with multiple attackers comes up. But also, here I always explain that the fight - for example against a mass attack, is a very dangerous and complex subject and so is the case with so-called attacks by multiple opponents. We also must talk about the combat capabilities of the

Gracie Jiu Jitsu attackers in this case. They the attackers armed, or not, etc. Who has ever fought with a 120 kg training partner? Now let's imagine that you had to fight against two or even three such attackers! How would you look there? On YouTube videos on this and similar topics, these scenes are imitated to “sell” the techniques to the viewers. Everything looks simple and of course mega cool. In a real situation on street situations, everything happens much faster, more aggressive, and UNEXPECTED! Who has ever asked himself why master Royce Gracie was able to dominate his opponents so quickly in the first UFC’s? Of course, it is because of his technique and tactics, but his opponents had no idea about ground fighting... maybe they knew one or another technique from Judo, Ju-Jitsu, or Wrestling, but not in this high level. The unexpected of this man, caught them completely off guard and were so close to defeat... probably before they could not even suspect it. Muay Boran: how to break into the opponent’s centreline Paksa, ปักษา Waeg, แหวก Rang, รัง means "the bird peeps through or breaks into the nest". The key word here is Waeg, แหวก that means to break into or to part. When you break into the opponent’s defense or guard, you open the way to a whole lot of devastating offensive options. In fact, the opponent’s “nest” is a metaphor to indicate the weak spots of his anatomy located along an imaginary line that runs from the top of his head to his perineum: this crucial body area is commonly referred to as the center line. Several oriental fighting arts base their offensive and defensive strategies on the center line theory. Most fighters learn early in their career that many weak spots lie on or near the central part of their bodies: learning to attack the central area of the opponent is a sure path to victory. In the same way, protecting one’s sensitive points is vital in order to guarantee safety in a fight. By concentrating one’s defense on covering the center line is a rational attitude that provides safety even in offensive phases.

Muay Thai

Every Muay Boran stylist should start his training by following these three steps: Step 1. Learn to detect the vital points that lay along your center line. This line divides the body vertically in two halves, left side and right side. Many sensitive points are located on or very close to this imaginary vertical line.Some of the most important points for combat are the following: (1) crown, (2) eyes, (3) bridge of the nose, (4) upper lip, (5) throat, (6) sides of the neck, (7) sternum, (8) heart, (9) solar plexus, (10) bladder, (11) groin. Attacks to each one of this points are potentially destructive. Head targets are best reached with hand and elbow strikes. Body targets can be attacked with hands, elbows and knees. Kicks and knee strikes are the best option if one chooses to attack lower targets. Step 2. Develop efficient offensive strategies designed to attack the opponents’ center line. Striking along the center line can cause serious damage and, in case of very accurate attacks, even death. In order to break

Muay Thai into the opponent’s guard and reach his center a Muay Boran fighter usually employs straight line attacks: straight kicks, straight punches and straight push elbows. A standard guard position is designed to protect some of the most sensitive spots but, without a side step, a parry or a block, it is impossible to cover all targets at the same time with a single guard. For this reason, learning to attack all soft spots along the center line with different body weapons is a must in order to develop unstoppable offensive tactics.

Step 3. Starting from a good guard position, develop a number of defensive strategies designed to repel possible attacks aimed at your center line and counter attack. Covering one’s center line is crucial in all-out fighting, since a strong attack to one’s “nest” can quickly end the confrontation in every moment. If our center is exposed, a smart opponent will easily reach our vital points; on the contrary, with a solid guard and a good defensive strategy, we will force our adversary to attack less sensitive areas first, in order to lead us to opening our center line for a

finishing move. This will create openings along his inner line and will give us enough time to react and take the offensive, aiming our attacks to his possibly unguarded center. Paksa Weag Rang fighting strategy is designed to learn how to attack the opponents’ center line in the most efficient ways. This battle field tested Mai Muay (combat technique) is based on the development of instinctive reflexes that allow a fighter to break through an adversary’s defences at the same time he is executing his attack or immediately after. In the application of counter striking, an expert of Paksa Waeg Rang strategy, will always strive to execute simultaneous defense and counter attack maneuvers: if, for example, one arm is deflecting the opponent’s strike, the other arm should be executing a counter blow, at the same time. This way of counter attacking makes any kind of defense the opponent may use, virtually useless; while one arm deflects or blocks, the other arm (or a leg) reaches the unguarded targets with enough power to cause a sudden KO. This is the intrinsic Art of this Mai Muay Boran.

Let us see some examples of possible applications of this ancient combat strategy against some of the most common attacks 1. Paksa Waeg Rang against round punches (Mahd Wiang). Step forward and simultaneously deflect the punch and strike. As the opponent moves towards you and starts throwing a rear roundhouse punch, waste no time and step forward into the attack. Your mind must be focused on the target of your

counterattack, in this case a low straight knee aimed at the groin or bladder. While you step forward and throw your knee blow, use your forearm to block the momentum of the swing punch. Your outer forearm bone should impact against the opponent’s inner forearm: this is a painful blocking technique that will help confuse him making your counter strike virtually impossible to block. 2. Paksa Waeg Rang against swing kicks (Tae Wiang). Step forward and simultaneously block the kick (and if possible catch the leg) and then strike. The roundhouse kick is a very powerful attack that all fighters should learn to neutralize and counter. If you try to sidestep a swing kick, you’ll find that the attacking leg will follow you and hit you anyway. The best defensive option is to apply Paksa Waeg Rang strategy and step forward: your elbows should impact against the opponent’s shin (middle part) and thigh, blocking the kick and possibly hurting the attacking leg. A quick leg grab and a swift counter kick should follow right after. Possible counter kicks are: a low side kick to the knee of the supporting leg or a vertical round kick to the “fork”. 3. Paksa Waeg Rang against straight punches (Mahd Trong). Deflect the punch and simultaneously step forward and strike. Breaking through the opponent’s guard as he is throwing a straight punch is no easy task. Paksa Waeg Rang intrusion strategy is the best option when facing a good straight-hitter. As the attacker steps forward and starts throwing the punch, bend slightly forward and step. While you move forward straighten your lead arm thus creating a “track” that pushes the straight punch away from your body. At the same time the opponent’s center line will be left completely

unguarded and open to several possible counterattacks (elbow strikes, knee strikes, headbutts, vertical swing kicks). 4. Paksa Waeg Rang against straight kicks (Tiip Trong). Deflect the kick, step forward and strike. In order to get to the opponent’s “nest” when he attacks with a front kick, the defender must first deflect the attacking leg with a low parry. At the same time he should step forward and under hook the opponent’s leg: by doing so, the defender can easily reach the attacker’s center line, ready to retaliate with strikes or a throw. The counter strikes can go from elbow blows to the face, neck or throat to knee strikes to the groin. Several throwing techniques can also be executed from the leg trap: stepping forward, diagonally or laterally, the already unbalanced opponent can be slammed to the ground with relative ease. 5. Paksa Waeg Rang against single or double neck holds (Chap Ko). Step forward and check the opponent’s arms and strike. The intrusion into the attacker’s guard can also be executed against an attempt to catch the neck with one or two arms. As the attacker steps forward trying to put one or both hands around your neck, go towards him and intercept his arms putting your forearms or wrists in the crook of his elbows. Pulling his arms with a jerk, hit his face with your forehead: follow up immediately with a knee to the groin. Very thin, with little strength, without a doubt, that's an unimportant detail, although my theory is that she was indeed a woman. Basically because Chinese society was extremely chauvinistic, and nobody in their right mind would attribute his Kungfu style to the genius of a woman, if he were not compelled by the truth.”

Karate KUMITE The term Kumite is made up of the characters Kumi, group (meeting), and Te, hand. After Kihon and Kata, this is the third pillar of Karate-Do. Out of these three pillars on which Karate is based, Kihon, Kata and Kumite, the latter is the spectacular and showiest one, and, probably, the better known by beginners and neophytes of this Martial Art. The combination of the two terms or "kanji" (ideograms) that set up the word KUMITE - Kumi could be translated as "exchange" and Te is "hand" - would give rise to a literal translation: Hands meeting, crossing out techniques, exchange of Martial Arts, etc.

or almost every practitioner, Kumite or 'Combat' represents the peak of the pyramid of their training, however Kumite is much more than just 'combat': it is showing the essence of Karate through a personal expression in the face of one or more opponents. Kumite or Combat, but it shouldn't be understood as a confrontation to determine who is the strongest. In Karate, there are some maxims that govern the behavior and the relationship between its practitioners (DOJO KUN), and define some aspects that identify this Martial Art and differentiate it from other disciplines. One of the main precepts of Dojo Kun is: KARATE NI SENTE NASHI (In Karate there is no first attack). This concept defines Karate as an eminently defensive Martial Art, in which concepts such as violence or dishonor do not enter. The Karate practitioner not only cultivates his body through practice, but also models the character and learns to relate to his peers through respect for others. The concept of Kumite in Karate is deeper than the simple confrontation of each other; in this respect, the

most important is the reciprocal relationship that the contenders generate through practice, which leads each of the participants to understand and model their own ego. Although it may seem otherwise, the true purpose of Kumite is not to see who is stronger or who can hit harder or faster. Karate practitioners seek the best of themselves, gaining self-confidence and the ability to control and anticipate situations that would otherwise overwhelm them. Knowing their own fears in order to overcome them and become strong by overcoming compromised situations will give them confidence, allowing them to face larger challenges. To achieve this state, the body is first trained in order to improve its physical condition; at the same time, the mind is strengthened and begins to believe in the positive aspects of these changes, which, added to the improvement in the technical and cognitive capacities, manages to enhance the Karate practitioner's skill level. In Karate, and due to the diversity of styles that are currently practiced, the Kumite varies according to its origin and the transmission of the old masters. This has

Karate not only led to different concepts of Kumite: the practice itself is also different in the techniques of breathing, displacement, working distance, Kihon and specific Kata forms. Each style tries to preserve its essence through the training of its original characteristics. As an example, we could name the most relevant characteristics of some styles of karate: GENSEI RYU: Among its characteristics we can highlight a high spiritual concentration, low center of gravity and great stability in the postures, as well as an alternation between strength and fluidity. GOJU RYU: The work is based on the conjunction between Strength (Go) and Softness (Ju). Everything is done with well-marked contraction and relaxation rhythms, together with IBUKI breathing (ventral sound), with which the development of internal energy (Ki) is always sought. Also, characteristic is its hardening work in pairs (KOTE KITAE), displacements (UNSOKU HO) and the performance of strongly executed movements, but within a most fluid action (MUCHIMI). KYOKUSHIN KAI: Work in this style is characterized by concentration and strength, not only physical, but also mental and spiritual. Kyokushinkai favors direct contact combat, and even seeks to end a match by KO, while traditional Karate, during Kumite, concentrates on winning by score. In the technical executions they will develop two types of breathing: IBUKI NOGARE (deep and relaxed), and IBUKI SANKAI (deep, concentrated and sonorous) RENBU KAI: This style was born in 1940 in Tokyo, as an organization of master practitioners of different Martial Arts in order to form their own style. Its founder was a Korean school teacher named Geka Yung. Renbu Kai literally means "Association of Martial Arts Practitioners". In a broader sense, its translation is "association for knight practices". Their sports Kumite modality is carried out with chest, hand and helmet protections, their competition rules being similar to those of the WKF. SHITO RYU: Due to the influence of masters Itosu and Higaonna, there are several main forms of work: SHURI - fast with natural positions (Itosu). NAHA - strong with more stable positions (Higaonna). TOMARI - mixture of the two previous forms. The influence of the three schools can be seen in the performance of the Kata, where

natural positions are used, neither too high nor too low; however, it is common to make them lower in defenses than in attacks. SHOTO KAI: The basic concept is that the body should be relaxed. The movements must be relaxed and with minimal tension until the very moment of impact, the center of gravity low and the mind receptive, awake and relaxed. It is considered that as long as there is no physical contact, Kime is not applied. Avoiding abrupt movements and unnecessary interruptions in our techniques will permit us having greater fluidity in their execution. Likewise, elasticity is needed to make the techniques wider and cover longer distances. The movement of the hip will favor the technique performance (Jyun Kaiten). Throughout his life, the main goal of the Shoto Kai practitioner is none other than the searching of Ki and its use. To this end, the breathing normally used is Nogare. In both defense and attack techniques, the full weight of the body is used, concentrating on one point to achieve a greater impact. SHOTOKAN: This style characterizes by the firmness of its positions, the rotation and momentum of the hip, and the power and fluidity of its techniques, all this based on a perfect knowledge of the way muscles and joints work in the different techniques, as it happens with other sports. The most widespread form of KUMITE in Shoto Kan is the JKA Regulation, with its modality IPPON SHOBU, or

one-point combat, with more permissive criteria in terms of contact, and without weight limit or control in the category. WADO RYU: Master Otsuka introduced the practice of Jyu Kumite in teaching. Positions are high and natural to allow quick movements. Hip orientation is essential: SHOMEN (front), HANMI (diagonal) and MAHANMI (profile). In Kata forms, blocks are usually performed at the Jodan level. The work of Kihon Kumite is based on the deep study of real combat, using forceful techniques of Okinawa Karate and adapted movements of Jiu Jitsu. As for the sports modality, its tournaments take the WKF regulations as a reference. After this exposition of some styles of KARATE, its technical foundations, origins and particular philosophies, we can verify that the concept that is capable of grouping all of them is KUMITE. At the beginning of the practice of Karate, the Martial Arts combats were to the death and, little by little, this extreme range was softened until the first regulations promoted by Japanese Masters of Kendo, Jiu Jitsu and Karate, who incorporated protections into their practices and began the sports aspect of an activity until then created to kill or be killed. The first steps of what could be known as Sports Kumite, with regulations that protect the contestants, as well as training methods with criteria for improving coordination

Karate

and skill, are not to be found until the first years of the 50s. In the world of Karate, there are many types of Kumite; each style and each school proposes a type of "hands meeting" or "exchange of techniques" against one, two or more opponents, and with defined parameters, that aim to show what Kihon and Kata claims it is the protection of the body from a possible attack, as well as the search for the best option to defend, counterattack and/or neutralize the opponent or opponents. The catalyst for all of these Kumite styles could be Shiai Kumite; its regulations are capable of bringing together participants from all over the world, regardless of their technical origin and the style of Karate they practice. As in all sports practice, movement technique is essential to achieve the necessary skills for a good performance. In Karate, it is called Kihon.

KIHON KUMITE The working foundation of Kumite is AT TA C K , DEFENSE and C O U N T E R AT TA C K . These 3 concepts can be practiced in a basic or advanced way, pre-established or random, with or without implements, where each participant chooses and decides his actions based on training patterns, depending on the level and o b j e c t i v e s t o b e c o v e re d . T h i s continued practice manages to

Karate generate skills that will make students more efficient and effective. The intention in the implementation of actions, number of repetitions, intensity, speed, time of realization, etc., will be the variables on which competitors will base their physical, technical and psychological preparation which finally will make them improve their level. In learning KUMITE we must progress gradually in the number and in the difficulty of the techniques and movements that we will use. To this end, this we have to start this process by practicing the most basic exercises, such as IPPON KUMITE, SANBON KUMITE and YAKUSOKU KUMITE. Later on, we can resort to KATA forms to develop our techniques, with the BUNKAI KUMITE as preset exercises. Next we will do free work in the JIJU KUMITE in the dojo, and we will finish this progression in the SHIAI KUMITE, with sports regulations and referees who will judge the actions and award the victory to the most skillful and who best interprets said regulations. Shiai Kumite (Sports Karate) is widespread all over the world, and some Karate styles have their own organization and national, continental and international competitions, such as JKA, (Japan Karate Association), KYOKUSHIN KAI, WADO RYU, etc. Each of them has its own specific arbitration rules, in which they try to remain faithful to the origins of their styles.
