The importance of trapping Trapping is very important because in a street fight the clash almost always takes place at a short distance, which is commonly called trapping. It is the distance where you fight body to body and there is constant contact between our arms and those of our opponent. Moreover, they often happen in places with little space. In these situations, the possibility of being able to make a high kick is minimal. Therefore, kicks below the belt, punches, elbows, blows with the head and the like are often used. For all these reasons, the one who knows the four distances will survive, which leads to an extremely decisive factor in the fight. The majority of people fight at the distance of kicks, boxing or clinches, only a few fight at the distance of trapping or rather half distance. There are three distances in trapping: long, half and short. The problem lies in the ignorance of these distances or in the fact that those who know them use them incorrectly because they remain static and proceed with stiff movements - all this reduces their efficiency. In OLIVA Combat System trapping, the movements are fluid, not prescribed, and the position of the legs is constantly changing in a free way. All this is always integrated and applied with the four principles and the philosophy of OLIVA Combat System. Definition of Trapping & Destruction Trapping is the most dangerous and effective distance in combat. This distance is about controlling and dominating the opponent's extremities. Sensitivity means feeling the energy of the opponent's arms at any moment, without paying attention to their position or movement.

The four principles of Trapping & Destruction In the core of the trapping of the O.C.S. system there are four principles, which are: First principle: move forward indefinitely. In a conflict, one must try to go forward, as far as possible and in a straight line towards the opponent, regardless of whether we are in a defensive or offensive position and regardless of the angle of the attack. This can be applied with the punches in chain, the double pak forming a triangle with our arms, thus a shield, etc. Especially kicks on the knee of the opponent are used in a straight line. All this is always applied in a straight line as long as there are no obstacles to the execution of the above techniques. Second principle: Staying on the opponent and applying pressure means attacking the opponent or responding to his attack, getting into a position of cuneo (wedge) or lap, pac or double pak, forming a triangle (the shield). Fourth principle: finishing the fight. As a result of the third principle, the opponent will be off balance or try to go backwards. The 10 golden rules of trapping It is extremely important to know that every time we find ourselves involved in a fight, there will always be contact between our arms and those of the opponent. That's when the 10 rules kick in.

In other words, perfect adaptability to all situations. The unarmed close combat, so called 4 distance, is also a very complicated area. In close combat it is very difficult to tell if a head butt or the fist as well as the knee or elbows or even weapons are being used. The reason for this is the wrong estimation of the distance. If this is not done, the distance to the opponent becomes smaller and therefore it becomes too difficult to see what element is being used, especially when the surprise effect is used. The second factor can be the psychological and physical. Martial arts is not street fighting respectively many martial artists and martial artists cannot distinguish between close combat in the dojo and street close combat. Muay Thai: the secret of training a top Thai Boxer Muay Thai at its highest level may be compared to a chess game: both contestants make use of their bodies and minds to out-smart each other. Body and mind must work as one if a fighter’s full potential is to be developed. Every Nak Muay (Muay fighter) is a unique entity; in fact it is impossible to find two who share exactly the same characteristics. One of the common mistakes of trainers with little experience is to train all students in the same way. Many times those coaches use the same standard schedule to train fighters that have very little in common in terms of physical and psychological attributes. A fighter with a definite tendency towards sidestepping and counter -fighting cannot be trained like another one who instinctively stalks his opponents and looks for in-fighting. Similarly, some thai boxers are natural kickers while others are at ease at grappling range: a given training system may be good for the former and detrimental for the latter. A good Khru Muay (Muay teacher) should be able to detect the strong and weak points of his students and train them in order to enhance their attributes as much as possible. Furthermore, a chain is as strong as its weakest link: similarly a fighter’s weaknesses must be exposed, analysed and someway corrected. Working with human material is extremely difficult because everything is fluid, nothing stays the same for a long time.

raining fighters is an ever changing job: only a vast first-hand experience can teach a Muay Thai trainer to cope with the infinite nuances of the process of turning a would-be thai boxer into a real champion. A good starting point is to check the characteristics of a new student according to 5 broad categories of Muay Thai “stylists”: every boxer has a natural tendency towards one of these 5 types. However, a trainer’s job is to combine the main attitude of a fighter with some additional features taken from one or more of the other categories. For example, a strong natural puncher will need some extra skills taken from the kicker’s technical expertise to become really competitive. Most Muay Thai teachers accept the following 5 categories: the puncher, the kicker, the grappler, the sapper, the allrounder. Let’s see the characteristics of each category.

1. The puncher • Physical attributes. A powerful puncher usually has strong shoulders and arms. • Favorite range. A puncher is a middle range fighter. When he is too close or too far from the opponent, his weapons (punches) lose a lot of their power. Therefore, in order to drop his bombs he is forced to maneuver to be at the only useful distance, all the time. It is clear that his opponents will do their best to keep him at bay with kicks or will try to grab him and wrestle, thus preventing him from throwing forceful strikes. • Complementary techniques. Usually the puncher will complement his arsenal with a few kicking techniques. As a matter of fact, most punchers are also lethal lowkickers: leg kicks are used to hurt, confuse and off-balance and they pave the way to powerful head or body punches that very often can lead to a dramatic knock-out. • Classic example among Thai fighters: Kaosai Galaxi

2. The kicker • Physical attributes. Physically, the best kickers are tall with long legs. • Favorite range. This kind of thai boxer is the typical out-fighter. Long range is the distance where he is more at ease because straight kicks and swing kicks are his

weapons of choice. Swing shin kicks to the liver, neck, temple or nape are ranked among the most lethal blows a human being can deliver. If one of these kicks hits you with enough power, your chances to stay on your feet are close to zero. However, if the opponent manages to close the gap and stick to the kicker, he will deprive the leg strikes of most of their force and will probably defeat him. • Complementary techniques. In order to full fill the gaps in his fighting strategy, a kicker must enrich his arsenal by means of a short or middle range weapon. Famous kickers, like Pud Pad Noi were also feared for their prowess with elbow strikes. When the opponent has managed to close the gap and is starting to work, the “complete” kicker quickly cuts through his adversary’s defences with one or more fearsome elbow slashes. 3. The grappler • Physical attributes. Good grapplers are equipped with strong neck and back muscles. Muay Thai grapplers favour neck clinching instead of body holding. Therefore, the best Muay Thai grapplers are tall with long arms, physically different from greco or freestyle wrestlers.

• Favorite range. The grappler’s attitude is to stalk the opponent, closing the gap with quick forward steps or with jumping attacks to cut the distance as fast as possible. A grappler is typically an aggressive fighter: when he is far from the opponent or when he finds himself at middle range he can be outsmarted by a good kicker or a strong puncher, respectively. • Complementary techniques. In order to safely close the gap and start to grapple, a pre-emptive strike is used most of the times. The strike can be a head or body punch or a middle swing kick. Sometimes, one of these complementary techniques becomes a second point of strenght: this is the case of Samson Isarn, a typical example of Muay Thai grappler who also possessed a hard punch that, after his career as a thai boxer, allowed him to become international boxing world champion. 4. The sapper • Physical attributes. Sappers come in all sizes and shapes. No specific physical attribute is needed to unleash effective elbow strikes. Technical prowess is all that’s needed to become an expert in this style. • Favorite range. This stylist is the typical short range fighter. However, since the elbow is a concealed weapon, before using it a thai boxer has to fight the fight without showing his intentions. When the opponent gets caught in the sapper’s web (he stops focusing his attention on the expected elbow attack), the elbow specialist will make his magic trick. The opponent will find himself badly cut or lying on the mat without even understanding what’s happened. • Complementary techniques. A typical beginner’s mistake is to try and throw elbow strikes form kicking or punching distance. Before elbowing, a fighter must be at the right (short) distance and to get there he must be sufficiently skilled in kicking and punching. When the situation (i.e., the distance) is right, instead of grappling he must seize the moment and strike before the optimal position is lost. Classic example among Thai fighters: Pol Pra Pradang

5. The all-rounder • Physical attributes. Just like sappers, all-rounders come in all sizes and shapes. No specific physical attribute is needed to develop a wellrounded style. However, genuine all-rounders are rare and most of them are destined to become great champions.

• Favorite range. When a fighter is good at kicking, has strong punching techniques, can control and eventually outsmart a grappler and know the subtle art of elbowing, no range is forbidden for him. Sometimes an all-rounders is also a heavy hitter: such a fighter belongs to a class of his own and is as rare as a diamond. Trying to stop a fighter who possesses the technical skill that allows him to fight at all ranges and also owns an arsenal of devastating power strikes, is almost impossible to do. • Complementary techniques. An all-rounder is a complete fighter: however, everybody has a preferred body weapon that he will tend to use to put an end to a contest. The main weapon will be supported by other weapons/tactics with the final goal of putting the opponent in the right place, at the right time and knock him out. he opening phrase "Keiko wa tsuyokare, jōshiki wa nakare" can be interpreted as "Practice firmly, but don't let your heart inflate with pride". This phrase is presented as a piece of advice that emphasizes the importance of diligent and disciplined practice, indicating that one should make every effort when practicing something, be it a skill or an art. However, it also warns against developing an inflated ego or arrogance due to the progress made. The phrase is attributed to Zeami Motokiyo (1363-1443), a renowned Noh playwright, actor and theater theorist in Japan. Zeami is known for his significant contributions to the development of Noh theater and for his philosophical writings on the performing arts.

The quote reflects his perspective on diligent practice, humility and the pursuit of mastery in the arts; humility is valued as an essential counterbalance to the pursuit of excellence. In essence, the phrase suggests that the quest for mastery must be accompanied by a humble heart and awareness of one's own limitations, not allowing oneself to be sickened by egoic, narcissistic issues or those that detract from the traditional path of a school. In the traditional ancient arts, a practitioner's journey goes far beyond lear ning physical techniques and movements. It is based on a deep search for self-development, discipline and an understanding of the traditions passed down through the generations. At the heart of this journey is the fundamental role of the Kokeisha, successors chosen by the master to carry on the legacy and responsibilities of the tradition. In this sense, the Kokeisha path can be considered to transcend visible forms and delve into the spiritual, sociological and philosophical roots that encompass the arts in a traditional path. In other words, the term "Kokeisha" echoes with meanings that unfold beyond the representativeness of words or protocols established for a position. It refers not only to an heir, but also to the keeper of the flame of tradition. The Kokeisha is the one who absorbs the teachings of his master (Shidoshi) not only with his mind and body, but also with his heart and soul, being the link between the past and the future, assuming the responsibility of keeping the integrity of the tradition alive for the next generations, and must always be up to the task of honoring the legacy.

In this way, understanding the role of Kokeisha goes beyond the mere guardianship of a set of technical collections or even a position that performs certain types of functions in a school. Therefore, the Kokeisha is not only an executor of the forms, but also a guardian of the ethical and philosophical principles that permeate the essence of the tradition maintained by the master. STREET SMART - WEAPON DEFENSE Gracie Jiu-Jitsu & Hapkido Franco Vacirca & Jong-Hyung Schwaar

The head of a style is called Dojunim. This name is given to Grandmaster Ji Han-Jae. Dojunim Ji Han-Jae is a South Korean Hapkido grandmaster known as the founder of Sin Moo Hapkido. He appeared with Bruce Lee in the 1978 movie “Game of Death”. Sin Moo Hapkido is the name of Dojunim Ji Han-Jae's Hapkido style since 1984. Ji Han-Jae was born in 1936 in Andong, a city in the South Korean province of Gyeongsangbuk-do. It is the largest city in the northern part of the province. The Nakdonggang River runs through the city. Andong is a market center for the predominantly agricultural surrounding area.

t the age of 13, he began training under Grandmaster Choi Yong-Sul and was the 14th student to receive a Dan degree from Grandmaster Choi Yong-Sul. He trained under Grandmaster Choi Yong-Sul until he attained the 8th Dan. Around 1959 he went to Seoul and opened his martial arts school there. He combined all his martial arts knowledge and began teaching Hapkido. In his dojang, Dojunim met people who trained in other martial arts, including Western boxing. Dojunim and his older students developed tactics from Boxing, Tang Soo Do, Taekwondo and Judo and integrated them into the curriculum. Ji Han-Jae is considered the founder of Hapkido, as is his master Choi Yong-Sul. Ji Han-Jae learned from a master he called “Taoist Lee” the use of various weapons such as Jangbong (long stick) and Dangbong (short stick), the Korean foot kicks and the development of Ki (Danjun breathing). Ki, according to Grandmaster Ji Han-Jae, is nothing more than adrenaline that develops physical, mental, and healing power. The Danjun center is located about two finger widths below the navel. It serves as an energy press for the increased release of Ki energy (adrenaline). Press breathing stimulates the adrenal glands to release more adrenaline. Danjun breathing generates additional Ki energy in the body. We direct the Ki energy into the arms, hands, legs, and feet. The body is warmed from within. Danjun breathing is performed eight times for 24 seconds each at the beginning of each training session. Care should

be taken to make the Danjun breathing as rhythmic and harmonious as possible. This is how it is done: Inhale through the nose for eight seconds (abdominal breathing). The eyes are looking straight ahead, the feet are a little more than shoulder width apart. The mouth is closed, the molars are on top of each other, the tongue is touching the palate and the incisors. Lower the center of gravity and hold the hands with spread fingers next to the hips. Hold the breath for eight seconds. Mentally focus on the Danjun center and build up a light pressure there. This light pressure serves as a “starter” for the Ki lead. At the end of the eight seconds, squeeze the Danjun tightly and create a tension in the whole body. Breathe out through the nose for another eight seconds, stretching the arms up parallel (holding them like a ball). Imagine the Ki energy flowing through the arms, hands, and feet. When the fingertips are at eye level, straighten the body again, relax and move on to the next breath. Dojunim learned Taoist Concentration Meditation from a woman he called “Grandmother”. Taoist Concentration Meditation is an introduction to the actual meditation techniques. As the name implies,

it is about increasing the ability to concentrate in harmony with breathing. You sit on the floor in a half-lotus position with your left leg resting on your right thigh. If necessary, use a cushion to ensure proper posture. The spine should be perpendicular along its entire length and in line with the parietal bone. The pelvis, shoulders, and eyes form three horizontal lines, parallel to each other and crossed vertically in the middle by the spine. The eyes look straight ahead behind the closed eyelids and fixate a fictive point about one meter away. The mouth is closed, the molars are on top of each other, the tongue touches the palate and the incisors. After aligning ourselves, we place the right hand (palm up) in the lap and the left hand (palm down) over it, as if holding a box. The fingers are closed, and the edges of the hands touch the body. Now we raise the left hand until we feel a distinct exchange of heat between the palms. When we reach this position, we begin to count backwards in our mind (about every second) from 100 to 1. The breathing (abdominal breathing) is natural and even.

Dojunim Ji Han-Jae coined and spread the term “Hapkido” as such The 25 basic steps are the foundation of the kicking system in Sin Moo Hapkido. They are practiced in every training session. Practicing foot kicks, jumps, etc. has not only a fighting aspect, but also a health aspect. It strengthens the organs and the body in general. The legs should be able to be used with the same naturalness as the hands. The starting position is a natural basic posture. That is, we simply stand. The feet are about shoulder width apart and the arms hang loosely from the body. We deliberately do not adopt a special fighting stance. On the one hand, this would limit our movement, and on the other hand, it would be difficult for the opponent to judge us correctly, and we would also avoid a possible provocation that we would cause with a fighting stance. Instead, we should try to remain calm and composed in the tense situation of a conflict and not aggravate it unnecessarily. Special kicks are all kicks that are not included in the 25 basic kicks. At the green belt level, these are the high heel hook kick and the heel spin kick. Both kicks are executed from the stance. The high heel hook kick is executed with both legs, while the heel spin kick is executed with the right leg only, in a clockwise direction. As with all striking techniques in Sin Moo Hapkido, the focus is on a point behind the actual target to be struck. This increases the power of the strike. You strike through the target. Care must be taken to keep the upper body low to avoid a possible counter to the head. By keeping the body low, we also create a natural counterbalance to the leg striking high. Imagine that the upper body and the leg form a balance beam, and the standing leg forms the beam. When one side goes up, the other side goes down and vice versa.

Falling Exercises in Sin Moo Hapkido Falling exercises are the first self-defense techniques we should learn to protect our bodies from injury. In addition to protection, falling exercises also have a health aspect. Falling exercises loosen and stretch the body, stimulate blood circulation, strengthen muscles and joints, massage the internal organs, and tone the skin. To avoid injury, it is important to approach falling slowly. In green belt, falling exercises are performed from a starting position close to the ground. Finally, falling techniques can also be used as attack techniques (rolls).

For the correct execution of the falling exercises, the following points must be taken into consideration: The striking arm, which neutralizes the energy of the fall, must be at an angle of about 45 degrees to the upper body. Otherwise, the latissimus dorsi will not be sufficiently contracted. Care must be taken to always roll or fall over the large back muscle. The head must never touch the floor! The abdominal muscles are briefly contracted on impact. Green belt level hand techniques include leverage, throwing and striking techniques where the opponent is facing you and is attempting to grab the side or center of your body (not diagonally, but parallel).

When executing the lifting, throwing, and striking techniques, directing the Ki energy into the arms and hands is the basis for a clean and powerful technique (see Danjun breathing). A secure stance, balance and flexibility are also essential. Care must be taken to execute the techniques as precisely as possible and with constant pressure on the appropriate joints. I started with Sin Moo Hapkido in Zürich Wollishofen and as a green belt I attended a seminar of Dojunim Ji Han-Jae in Nancy, France. Meeting him was unique. Unfortunately, I could not speak Korean, but I was warmly welcomed by him. A few years later, I met him again at a seminar in Lausanne, Switzerland. One way for many - Hapkido During my first trips to the USA, the land of a thousand possibilities, I got to know a variety of martial arts. In the mid 80's this martial art was still quite unknown to me. As an enthusiastic martial artist and reader, I had a lot of material sent to me from the USA at a young age. In the beginning I was more interested in the pictures than in the texts. Besides the daily training, these books and magazines gave me the necessary motivation to prepare even more for these first training trips. I planned of when and who I wanted to visit in California. In my eyes, Hapkido, as I know it today through Sabunim Jong-Hyung Schwaar, is the evolution of a true master. Sabunim is both teacher and student every day. He is constantly working on himself and his Hapkido curriculum. In his place, with his high degree, he is still working so hard on himself. Not everyone does this. Most martial arts teachers

sooner or later reach a point where they become resigned to what they have. They stop working on themselves. In my many years of training and later as a process optimization expert, I learned many things that I could later use in martial arts (and vice versa, of course). One of them is called KAIZEN and can be translated as “improvements in small steps” (from TPS - Toyota [Total] Production System). Of course, KAIZEN is

much more than that, but I don't want to give you a TPS lesson today. You always learn to improve in small steps, and you always look for solutions and improvements in the process. This is exactly what people and masters like Sabunim Jong-Hyung do.

The goal of this work is, among other things: 1. Preserving the spirit and purity of this art and faithfulness to its origin. 2. To structure the way of practicing and spreading this art throughout the world. 3. To continue learning without limits and without ego.

Everything is based on change: Korean Hapkido (like Jiu-Jitsu) is “wild” because man is like nature, wild and relentless. The historical origins of true martial arts are to be found in the origins of mankind, not in fantasies and certainly not in fighting scenes in movies. Technique is a matter of feeling: A principle of true martial arts is “teaching by learning and learning by teaching”. Try out borderline situations with others without harming yourself or others, but always in a realistic way. If you want to know the truth, don't expect others to answer. Be open and accept criticism. An authentic response is based on real experience and takes time. If the situation changes, we adapt. Because Koreans are a tough people, true martial arts like Hapkido are a tough art. They have gone through many difficult situations in their history, so they are tough. Master Frisan starts a new series of DVDs on the best Kyusho points for different situations. This solves two problems for the man: the problem of his lack of exercize and problem of low quality of living present in cities. If we add the ability that, through this type of activity, the programme's participants will be given some basic ecological guidelines and develop their awareness about the protection of nature. In that case, from the perspective of protecting the Earth as a habitat, the main goals of the programme would be fulfilled.

xactly because of this, various programmes that are held out in the open are being developed today. Recreational camping, "survival team building”, different working therapies in nature, education in nature, some parts of schools' curriculums as well as physical preparations of professional athletes are led with "primitive technologies” as their primary tools. These kinds of programmes are more and more existent. Among a large number of different activities, the so-called "survival in nature” types of programmes are the most popular.

But what does "survival in nature” really imply?

The term "man's survival in nature” means that the man will perform a sequence of smaller or a number of complicated motoric patterns thanks to which he/she tends to survive in nature and regulate his/her basic biological needs. The survival technique is made up of rational and efficient movements by which, in nature, a person can make shelter, light a fire, catch fish or another wild animal, pick wild and edible plants, collect moist from plants or compile a condensing trap in order to gather water, master the terrain by lowering from a steep cliff or travelling across a river, transporting water, food and equipment from one (the most secure location) to another (even more secure location), etc.

It needs to be stressed that anyone can find himself in a situation where he/she will need to try and survive. Also, we need to take into consideration that the definition of survival is very complex and that it does not imply only natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, fires, snowstorms etc. Keep in mind that day trips in nature without enough water or food along with unfit equipment can turn into a stressful situation which people are not used to and might come across for the first time in their lives. When a man steps into the unknown, he needs to, potentially, survive it. In order to have complete control over his natural environment, he needs a large amount of experience and knowledge which, in turn, is gained over a long period of research and practice. If a person is suddenly put in a survival situation, his mind will be taken over by confusing thoughts and feelings. He first needs to face those feelings and brush them off. Firstly, he needs to find an adequate place which is protected so he can formulate a plan for survival. Good planning and preparation will help in overcoming difficulties and danger and will keep the victim alive. As soon as possible, all positive and negative aspects of the situation need to be weighted. The main priorities are shelter, water and fire.

The connection between martial arts and the knowledge of survival in nature Survival in nature has an extremely long tradition in martial arts warrior training. Even the ancient Spartans took their children aged from 11 to 13 years old to inaccessible parts of nature and left them there for a couple of days to manage and survive on their own. The goal of such upbringing wasn't just to become acquainted with nature, i.e. know how to get around or survive. The main goal was build a "warlike character”. Warfare and nurture were, primarily, oriented towards the self and certain weaknesses that the warrior has inside himself. Any kind of weakness, whether physical or character, was perceived as a disadvantage which the warrior had to overcome. A very similar, almost identic, way of upbringing was implemented in some Native American tribes and the same pattern was used by the Vikings, the Aborigines in Australia, samurais and ninjas in Japan, kung fu monks in China, as well as many other cultures.

This training had the goal to teach young "warriors” to respect nature, i.e. to understand that they are also part of nature and that they need to know how to adapt to it. Young men had to learn how to respect its laws, its conditions and caprice. It was important that they understood the rule which says that, in nature, there are no punishments and no rewards, only consequences. Only once the young men learnt how to respect nature could they start to learn how to survive in it. If nature is being respected, it will accept us and we will only benefit from her. On the contrary, it will not pity us. The reason is that nature is cruel as much as it should be. For this reason, young men needed to implement certain knowledge which are, however, thought to be primitive skills because man possesses this knowledge from the earliest periods of his evolution (Paleolithic) and it secures him the gratification of basic biological needs in natural habitats. Those are the construction of a shelter, finding food and water, igniting, controlling and using fire. People who spend time in nature or use some of the knowledge and skills that are needed in order to survive in nature are called many different names today. Depending from their country and origin, we can mention some of those names: voyager (a traveller-researcher from North America), trapper (fur hunter), highlander (hillman), mountaneer (alpinist, climber), explorer, logger, lumberjack, wilderness survivor, wildwood, tracking (tracing), survival in nature as well as, one of the most frequently used terms today, bushcraft. The name derives from the term "bush ranger” and is mostly used in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Other terms are used more rarely. Certain knowledge and skills of surviving in nature are part of training in many martial arts. For example, we can name some of those martial arts:

• In ninjutsu: shinobi iri (the technique of noiseless movement and the skill of climbing to and entering the enemy territory), suji – ren (training in water and movement through water), inton – jutsu (covering one's trails, fleeing and hiding), ten mon (knowledge of meteorology), chi mon (knowledge of using geographical maps and the skill of spatial navigation). • In karate: haya – gake – jutsu (fast walking and long running), karumi – jutsu (the technique of climbing and avoiding the attack by jumping sideways), suijohoko – jutsu (technique of crossing water), suei – jutsu (fighting and swimming in water with body armor), chikujo – jutsu (building obstacles), naroshi – jutsu (the skill of sending fire signals), hojo – jutsu (the technique of tieing up an enemy), chi (KI) bioenergy; the energy that is stored in man and which he takes it from nature. • In kung fu: various fighting techniques that were created by imitating animals. Subak is the old Korean fighting technique that was made by imitating animal behaviour. Kung fu, ju – jutsu, judo, aikido, tae kwon do, capoeira, muay thai and krav maga are only some of many martial arts that are often trained in nature. In boxing, kick – boxing, wrestling and many other martial arts, athletes' physical preparations are held in nature. Also, a number of different situational exercizes performed by military and police forces are located in nature.

The basics of training to survive in nature Before going to a certain place in "wilderness”, always ask the local inhabitants (if possible), a hiker or someone who has already been there about the specifics of the location. As soon as you start planning and organizing your stay in a certain place in nature, try to predict some possible dangers that you might come across. Always wear appropriate and recommended equipment. Never go on such an endeavor on your own, no matter what your previous experience might be. While planning your stay in nature, an important factor is your choice of partner or an adequate group of people that will go with you. Choosing a bad partner or group might be very dangerous and sometimes even of crucial importance. On the other hand, if you don't have any experience with staying in nature, it is smart to go with someone who has enough experience and from whom you can learn a lot. Later on, you will be able to use that knowledge and gradually become independent. Choosing the right person is very important and it is best if there are a couple of older and more experienced individuals in your group. Also, having younger persons present can also help, from the aspect of good physical condition. Also, you must take note of those persons' personalities. Those who were or are members of the military or police are eligible. People who train certain martial arts such as karate, judo, aikido, tae kwon do, kung fu, ju jutsu etc. are also desirable because they have more respect towards their elders and those who are more experienced which, in some situations, can be crucial. They have learnt to repress their ego and adapt to the group. Some people can be in great physical condition, but sometimes their fighting nature, i.e. their temper as well as their inability to control their ego, can have a very negative impact on the group as a whole. The largest number of accidents happens due to misjudged behaviour and by making wrong decisions. If an individual makes a wrong decision, he/she can jeopardize himself/herself, the other member of the group as well as rescuers who come from other groups. This is why each person needs to pick his/her goal carefully, depending on his/her strength, condition or abilities. It is certain that better prepared and stronger individuals seek for harder and more demanding areas of wilderness, whereas those who are less prepared find their satisfaction in some less dangerous and tame places. Some individuals who cannot control their temper forget that the wilderness' challenge is always greater than the person's abilities. Being overloaded and having unrealistic goals are critical for both strong and conditioned as well as those who are not, in obtaining that preset goal.

When packing your belongings that you plan to take with you, keep in mind that you don't need anything that you don't have and that there isn't too much of anything. Experience will help you, but if you don't have it, ask someone who does, i.e. those that you plan your stay with. When packing your backpack, note that the heaviest

items need to be placed at the bottom and closest to your back simply because of balance and easier carriage. After that there are clothes and shoes, and then other equipment (for example, things that you use for personal hygiene etc.). Things that you'll need most often need to be put on the top (for example, a hat, raincoat, food, gas

bottle and a cooker/kettle, rope etc.). The backpack's pockets should be used to store small things, but equally necessary for your stay in nature: a water-bottle, map and compass, first-aid kit, knives, matches, battery lamp, whistle, chocolate bars or glucose etc. The amount of things that you'll need will depend on how many days you

plan to stay and in which time of the year, i.e. which season. Today's equipment greatly differs from equipment that was available in our near past. Thanks to the industry of outdoor equipment, we can choose from many improved solutions. One of the most important, if not the most important, part of

equipment is appropriate footwear. Using lighter and softer shoes will facilitate climbing and walking. If one needs to move around on rocks or through snow, bigger and firmer shoes should be used. The best are the so-called deep shoes which lessen the chance of injuring one's ankle joint as well as protect the foot from other external conditions (rocks, snow). When buying a pair of shoes, keep in mind that you should buy at least a one size bigger pair so you can be able to put on an extra pair of socks (first thinner and then a thicker, woolen pair over them). Be careful not to take "new shoes” with you, but rather those that were previously worn and broken into so that you can feel more comfortable. Your pants should be elastic and made from material that can dry out while wearing it on your body. It is good to wear underwear that is made of materials which absorbs sweat efficiently and hands it over to the upper layers of clothes. In order to function, it needs to be skintight. In case you basic layer of clothes is good (underwear) meaning that it will successfully pass on the sweat to the second layer, it would be smart to choose a material that will quickly dry in that second layer. Also, this layer should have good heat and wind isolation properties.

The term "equipment” refers to absolutely every item that will be of use to you, but owning a good-quality knife or some other cutting tool combined with the knowledge of how to use it in survival situations in nature can secure a man or greatly ease the regulation of all of his primary physiological needs. During his stay in nature, it will give him security and uninhibit his movement through nature. Once you reach your destination, you need to set up your tent or, if you don't have one, make an appropriate shelter of your own. With the help of a knife or hatchet, one can make a decent shelter out of sticks, branches and leaves (a smaller shelter made of branches and leaves can be made without any tools). Having a shelter means that you have a crucial physical barrier between yourself and cruel nature that surrounds you. In a survival situation, one needs to find or build his own shelter that will protect him from wind, moisture, sun or cold, depending on the climate in which he is located. When building a shelter, lighting a fire or in a desire to tie or secure something, you need to know how to do that. In other words, you need to know how to make a firm knot that will be of use. It is best to make a shelter somewhere on the edge of the woods, never inside it. After rainfall, there is water dripping from the branches for hours and strong wind might break them. Be careful not to build a shelter under an isolated tree – they are oftentimes the lightning's target. Shelter must never be built on a path that is used by game animals. It is good to make it near water, but you also need to keep in mind that the sound of running water can cover some other noises and might indicate danger. A shelter that is located too close to water increases the chance of sudden floods that might result from heavy rainfall as well as the danger of various insects and animals. Water is equally important for people, just like air. In dry areas, people must secure a source of water every day. In case you are left without it, you need to get acquainted with as many way of collecting it as possible. Also, it is important that it remains drinkable and in a safe place. In general, an adult can stay alive for 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food. So, water needs to be a priority. One mustn't wait until all the reserves are used up- a new source of water needs to be sought out immediately. In a situation where you need to survive, 1 litre or water can last up to 4 days and, if necessary, the last 1/4 can last up to 3 days. The human body loses 2-3 litres of water a day which means that this amount needs to be replaced with drinking liquids or eating food which, to some extent, consists of water. An increase in activity and temperature means that we lose more liquids by breathing or sweating. The water inside of our organism is responsible for a number of vital functions such as extracting waste, supplying with energy, regulating body temperature and retaining mental sharpness. In order for a man to be healthy and entirely functional, he needs to have access to an amount of water that will get him through the day. It is best to suspect that all water is contaminated. Lentic, smelly ponds are a source of infected and dirty water. However, they can also be drinkable, if necessary. On the other hand, clean, cold, free-flowing water which is rich in oxygen and which seems to be safe for consummation without purification can be the source of many stomach problems. First, one must always seek for the cleanest source of water, one that is the freshest and the healthiest without any trace of pollution. After water has been collected, one needs to extract any kind of substance that has accumulated.

The best way to do this is to fasten a watertight cloth when decanting the liquid from one (polluted) container into the other (clean) one. One of the methods includes filtering inside the bottle by using rocks and sand. If you do not have a bottle, you will need to improvize and, in such a situation, use a sock. The layers of rocks and sand will remove the dirty particles of the polluted water leaving it clean enough to be further refined with boiling. When this is done, the water needs to be thoroughly boiled (you should boil it at least 5 minutes in order to have it safe for drinking). Before going to sleep, you will need to boil enough water for the next day, store it and leave it on an open space so it can cool down. Fire is very important for survival. It dries clothes, is the best source of heat, it cooks food, boils water, gives light during nighttime, removes insects and so on. Having the possibility to make fire and maintain it is a skill that needs to be mastered and improved. As a part of the equipment, one should always carry a trusty mode of starting a fire (matches, lighter). Also, we should all need to know how to light a fire the way our ancestors did – without using matches, because anyone can find oneself in a situation where he or she needs to survive without them or without any other contemporary mode of making fire. Three major components are necessary in order to do this – fuel, oxygen and heat. Also, in order to do this effectively, an unlimited amount of each of the listed component needs to be available. The driest possible piece of wood needs to be secured as well as a sufficient amount of it, depending on the purpose. In a damp or windy weather one needs to make sure that there are enough twigs or smaller trees available.

The primitive way of making fire is by friction. This underestimated method is useful because you can almost always find all the necessary materials. After the equipment is collected, a couple of seconds are enough time needed to make fire. From all the methods that include friction, the method of using a bow and a drill (i.e. bowdrill) is the most efficient and safe to use in every possible environment. One needs to make a drill, 20 cm in length and 2 cm wide and round one end in order to make a larger surface for friction. The other end which is held and which a person pushes down with a handle needs to be made into a smaller surface so unnecessary friction can be avoided. Then, a bow made of wood, 70 cm in length, is needed. A piece of rope or tether is tied to it on both ends so that the bow is strained. The base is made out of the same wood just as the drill, 30 cm in length and 2 cm thick. A slot for the drill needs to be formed on it as well as a "V” shape cutout which use is to collect the wooden chips. The method of using a bow and drill produces smoke and red-hot chips which then need to be added to pre-prepared dry grass or bark. A person can easily be lost in nature, especially if the weather conditions are not favourable: fog, rain, dark etc. Don't think that it happens only to beginners or inexperienced explorers because even very experienced connoisseurs get lost. However, this is not such a big problem if you know how to orient. One of the easiest methods is to climb to the top of a hill or the highest tree and look around yourself. Spot a dot that will become your orientation mark for a certain period of time (for example, a lonesome tree, rock, meadow, mountain, house, electric post). It is important to travel straight towards this point. You can orient with a help of a clock in a way that you observe the sun on the clock's glass and turn the clock until the direction of the sun doesn't coincide with the small hand. Then halve the angle between the small hand and number 12 and you will get the direction of South. Sometimes you can follow the flight of birds which travel towards South.

During a clear night, the direction of North can be easily determined according to the Pole star. It is a part of the Little Dipper constellation (Ursa Minor). The easiest way to find it is by the help of the Ursa Major constellation. North can also be defined thanks to a darker stripe on trees which is always located on its northern side and is made out of leftover moisture. Humid bark dries slowest on the nothern side of the tree where there is the fewest amount of sun. Also, bark is here more coarse and is usually overgrown with moss. Mushrooms which live on trees will remain here the longest because of the humidity. The northern side of the woods usually gets rid of snow only 2 weeks after it has already been melted on the southern side. Likewise, northern slopes retain snow longer than southern ones. If you come across a brook, always go downstream. The brook will take you to a valley, toward a river and here you will, sooner or later, find people. Survival in nature primarily needs motivation, as well as knowledge, experience and, lastly, equipment. The will to survive is the basis because our mental system is equally important as much as our strength and knowledge. Knowledge gives us safety and gets rid of fears. Also, we one needs experience (or, in other words, training) by mastering skills and retaining them on a regular basis. Lastly, equipment is important, no matter its quality, as it is always an advantage. Its lack doesn't necessarily mean you are not equipped because you carry knowledge, skills and experience with yourself. However, that same knowledge and skills need to be extended and developed instead of allowing to forget them.
