Sifu Paolo Cangelosi presents a true pearl of the traditional programs of the Hung Gar style, according to the lineage of the Grand Master and hero Wong Fei Hung, considered the father of modern Hung Gar. It is the form “Loon Ying - the Shadow of the Dragon", extracted from the forms Ng Ying Kune and Sap Ying Kune. The beginning of this set involves the study of Dragon techniques, through a very sophisticated and complex system based on psychocorporal techniques, breathing, dynamic tension of the tendon and muscle fasciae, isotonic techniques flanked by emissions of guttural sounds that refer to the emotions and moods of the individual, as well as vibrations that correspond to the energetic tone of the vital organs. All this has a great association with the canons of traditional Chinese medicine and technically in its practice can be seen expressed in the form of the dragon where we will find a succession of combinations of sounds and movements that create this energetic and emotional dance in a chronological order to free the human being of his mental blockages, his physical and psychological weakness and reactivate the vital functions of the organs and viscera connected to each other. This is the main essence of this wonderful exercise that has taken its place in the most important forms of the Hung Gar style. You will surely get the most out of it by going on to study the "Tit Sin Kune" form, where you will specialize and complete this cultural technical panorama, treasure of the great studies carried out and transmitted by the great master Tit Kiu San.

The Academy of Martial Movement, fusion of the knowledge of Kyusho Jitsu and Tuite Jitsu of M° Frisan Gianluca together with the knowledge of the Art of Movement of M° Pascut Fulvio, continues the technical progression in the training of high level martial instructors and makes available to all the universal principles hidden in the movements of internal and external martial arts, unifying them and focusing them on precision, to bring Kyusho to a new level. In this 3rd volume, we will continue with a detailed study of the pressure points of the head, exercises and technical efficiency, ways to make the force penetrate the opponent's body ... but not only that, we will understand that really “stun” an attacker can be simple and effective. Before the analysis of the pressure points, their location, the best angle to strike, rub, manipulate ... we continue with the principles of martial movement, a unique feature of our academy. The next step is to understand how the transmission of this force occurs, how to charge the “potential” blow and unload it on the opponent. Block by block, internal and external work on our body will make our body structure and alignment a sharp tool to utilize 'force multipliers' at the Kyusho points. The devastating effectiveness of Kyusho is now further amplified, with aspects that can be concretely enhanced and trained, regardless of external and immutable aspects such as our opponent's 'sensitivity' to Kyusho attacks!

"When a society is determined to destroy itself, there is no one to stop it."
Lorenzo Castro
"What the herd hates most is he who thinks differently; it is not so much the opinion itself, but the audacity of wanting to think for oneself, something they do not know how to do."
Arthur Shopenhauer
Modern societies have an obsession to legislate on all aspects, small or large, private or public, on the most diverse subjects; an enterprise to which they give themselves with unbridled fruition and unbridled abandon; a passion worthy of much better purposes.
Two are the origins of the neurotic crusade in question: The first is endogenous, the result of the inability of its citizens to accept the finiteness of their lives and the fatuous idea, the fanciful desire, that everything can and must be controlled; an arrogant disposition, typical of the thought that man has conquered nature and consequently, everything that happens in it, is and will be his fault.
The second, typical of the "Danish race", the nits and crabs that, stuck to the idea of democracy, simply parasitize it, that is, of politicians, who in their eagerness to justify their usefulness, do not stop inventing enemies, scapegoats, and causes to get on their wooden horse and defeat the dragon of the day like Saint Jorges with a tie.
The legislative diarrhea deals with the most perverse matters, subjects, most of the times, that only a quarter of an hour before, nobody would have thought of them, but that amplified, acquire such a relevance, that we all wonder how we have been able to live until now without dealing with them.
The idea that the more we legislate, the safer we will be, is stupid in itself, but the forms (another sign of the times) are more powerful than the contents.
The "radical" reaction, that of going to the roots, has been too long in coming, but it has finally arrived, because the moral discourse of social democracy and its perks, has conquered the enslaved and dependent hearts of those who have accepted the idea that the "matria", that is, that of a protective and nurturing state as a mother, or what is the same, the idea that possessing human rights, without their "patrician" counterpart, that of human obligations, was something possible and acceptable.
The feminine principle was activated after the Second World War and its masculine excesses... and humanity gave itself up to this bien-pensant frenzy.
Consequently, we live in a garden that denies the jungle! The radicals have come with intense speeches, and no matter how much they want to stem the tide, they will not be able to. The law of the pendulum is imposed, you cannot go to one extreme without, with space and time, it calls for its opposite.
The demonization of the radicals, today called extreme right, fascists and other flattering definitions, is no longer enough to put a foot in the door to their advent. They are nothing more than the result of another extreme and of a hackneyed and impoverishing discourse which, after the fall of the Soviet Union, was greened, who would have thought it, in Caribbean lands and, curiously enough, from something so masculine, by the hand of guys dressed in military uniforms!
"The idea that the more we legislate the safer we will be, is stupid in itself, but the forms (another of the signs of the times) are more powerful than the contents".
The new puritanism The new puritanism
I am not interested in the political aspects, but in the forces behind these reactions. Their representatives are only puppets of greater forces, sometimes masculine, sometimes feminine, that try to bring answers to ever changing, ever paradoxical situations of history. Like Toynbee I see history as a becoming of Yin and Yang, and we know that every face has a back and that the bigger the face, the bigger the back. However, as a man of my time, I cannot fail to point out the most significant abuses that I perceive in my immediate environment, and that obsessively, day by day, are sticking their annoying finger in my freedom. There are so many that one would begin with an essay and end with an encyclopedia, but as I do not intend anything else than to empty my quiver full as it is of nonsense, to rest my personal boredom, I simply console myself by explaining a little here and a little there, about some of them.
When one has lived long enough one sees how things turn out. When I was young in post-Franco Spain, sexual freedom was a banner. Women claimed that the use of their bodies was not only their right, but that this right prevailed even over that of the unborn. Well, the same people who proclaimed that, today want to prohibit prostitution.
Servant, who has never been a user of these services, probably more because no one ever initiated me in it in adolescence, than anything else, and precisely because I am not suspected of defending here any issue that concerns me directly, is obliged to point out this perfidy. In short, wanting to put a door on the field has never worked. The latest cause that has awakened my spidey senses is that of attacking pornography (hahaha Good luck with that too!), you're on to something!
If one takes all this loose news and puts it together, the concussion is the emergence of a new puritanism, pass it on you, this time from the left! Yes, over time and space Yin changes into Yang and Yang changes into Yin.
I often wonder how we of my generation were able to survive without so many protective laws, but if I go down to detail, I do not find that those of today have more advantages or are going to do better than us, on the contrary.
The neurotic society of this demented West, in the name of freedom, restricts it in exchange for fatuous and unsustainable promises of security. What a business we are doing!
A teacher of mine already said: "If you want to destroy something, subsidize it, because ease leads to difficulty, as much as difficulty leads to ease" and whoever comes after, let him hold his candle!
"The neurotic society of of this demeditated West, in the name of freedom restricts it in exchange for fatuous and unsustainable promises of security. What a bargain we are making!"

Can you tell us a little bit about your background in martial arts. Your personal history up to this moment.
If anyone would like to know more about the origins of our school of LAMECO - KALI ILUSTRISIMO - JUN FAN JEET KUNE DODEXTREZA and my personal progression there is an interview in Spanish in Cinturón Negro titled: "Artes Marciales desde la Consciencia", by Tim Fredianelli through the link of Budo International : https://issuu.com/budoweb/docs/revista_artes _marciales_cinturon_ne_e7fa9b8072250d/130?e= 1589527/13577225
In this interview I make a tour and recap of my first 26 years training Filipino Martial Arts and JEET KUNE DO under my first Instructors Jose Maria Fraguas and Segundo Gomez at the former Kali Jun Fan Institute in Spain, from 1988 to about 2000.
I also talk mainly about my training and studies with Tim Tackett under whom I am certified. Tim Tackett is a true legend of JUN FAN JEET KUNE DO. Thanks to Tim Tackett I am also certified under Bob Bremer who I had the opportunity to train with on several occasions, Bob Bremer was a direct and original student of Bruce Lee and one of the most combative JKD Instructors, in fact, Sifu Bremer was known to be a "filter" at Bruce Lee's Original School in Chinatown. I also had the opportunity to train on quite a few occasions directly under two other direct students of Bruce Lee, Instructors Ted Wong and Dan Inosanto.
But my studies were mainly with Sifu Tim Tackett who stands out as one of the most knowledgeable and well versed Instructors of the system or martial art developed by Bruce Lee known as (Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do) JF-JKD. The curriculum of techniques of OLD SCHOOL JKD is not very large, you just have to know how to do the techniques well first and then train them 10,000 times, for example only the technique of "leg obstruction" is trained a thousand times with each of those who can attend a class, so you learn to apply it against anyone throwing you a fist or leg technique and against all types of opponents regardless of their constitution and weight.
In that Budo International interview I also explain how after leaving the Jun Fan Institute in Madrid I start training Kali, Arnis, Eskrima with numerous other Filipino Martial Arts Masters. I had the opportunity to start training in private LAMECO Eskrima with the first Lameco Instructor of the West Guro Wolfgang Mueler in 2004 whom I brought several times to Spain to give seminars, I also organized several courses with Guro Dave Gould of LAMECO and I was introduced to Kalis Ilustrisimo in 2007 by Guro Shamim Haque whom I also brought to give a seminar in Spain on one occasion.
Thanks to Guro Christof Froehlich I met Guro Dino Flores and started my path and personal development in 2010 in LAMECO S.O.G (Sulite Orihinal Group) and KALI ILUSTRISIMO.

A Martial Arts Instructor is the result of those under whom he has been and is trained. One by oneself is nothing and we should be more grateful and always give credit to those who have dedicated their time and effort to help us to better ourselves and transform us into who we are. In my first Budo International interview I gave credit to many Instructors, but mainly I am the result of what I have learned in LAMECO S.O.G. and Kali Ilustrisimo with Guro Dino Flores, in JUN FAN JEET KUNE DO with Sifu Tim Tackett and in Destreza Verdadera, Spanish martial art par excellence, to Joaquin de Diego. I have always honored and will always honor all my Instructors, but Guro Dino Flores, Sigung Tim Tackett and Joaquin de Diego are the ones who have taught me the most, inspired me and made me suffer the most, and to whom I owe the most for their dedication, patience and time.
I also want to thank Manu Garcia who for me is the pioneer of MMA in Spain, Manu is an old friend, he has been my private MMA teacher and training partner with whom I am always learning, Jacobo Gancedo my Boxing and Kick Boxing teacher and my former head of security for showing me forcefulness and effectiveness, to Meto Kodakov an Olympic Wrestling legend and grappler for his philosophy of discipline and self-improvement, to Sifu Ignacio Bautista a little known but really extraordinary Wing Chung Instructor for knowing how to apply an Art and how to take his technique to combat. And to Sifu Segundo Gómez, perhaps the most knowledgeable JKD Instructor of this art in Spain today. And to my friend and shooting teacher in Spain Daniel Mateo. If I wanted to train any of these disciplines in Spain without a doubt after almost 40 years training Martial Arts I would train with them, besides being amazing at what they practice they have real experience!

Thanks to Guro Dino Flores for all he has done for me and especially for introducing me to that ancient and wise clan of Filipino Warriors from Los Angeles, California and introducing me to his friends and colleagues from BACKYARD LAMECO. I also want to infinitely thank Guro Choy who is a walking encyclopedia of LAMECO, Guro Bud Balini may he rest in peace for accepting me into his LAMECO tribe, GURO BONG for transmitting to me the authentic LAMECO energy, Guro Arnold Noche for his wise instructions and Guro Ariel Flores Mosses for sharing with me LAMECO secrets and for teaching me how to use a firearm and how to shoot on the move and in a real way.
Why did you decide to focus on Lameco S.O.G., OLD SCHOOL Jeet Kune Do and True Skill?
LAMECO ESKRIMA S.O.G.
LAMECO Eskrima is a training system of the Philippine Warrior Arts created and founded by Punong Guro Edgar Sulite. He created a training curriculum based on his trainings with many, many Grand Masters in the Philippines, but it is worth noting that his major influences were Grand Master Jose Caballero, Grand Master Antonio Ilustrisimo and Grand Master Leo Gaje. However, I think it is worth explaining and specifying why he came to hold the title of Punong Guro.
LAMECO ESKRIMA is composed of five major systems and six minor systems of Filipino Martial Arts, it is a balanced fusion of many practical teachings that Punong Guro Edgar Sulite mastered and acquired throughout his life.
The five major influences of the LAMECO ESKRIMA System are:
- De Campo 1, 2, 3 Orehenal (from Grand Master Jose Caballero).
- Kalis Ilustrisimo (from Grand Master Antonio Ilustrisimo).
- Pekiti-Tirisia Kali (by Tuhon Leo Gaje Jr.)
- Modernos Largos (by Grand Master Jesus Abella and Grand Master Pablicito "Pabling" Cabahug)
- Sulite-Rapelon (by Grandmaster Helacrio L. Sulite Sr.).
The six minor influences on the LAMECO ESKRIMA system are:
- Twelve Pairs (from Grandmaster Diony Cañete).
- Balintawak (from Grandmaster Johnny Chiuten)
- Lapunti Arnis de Abanico (from Grand Master Felimon E. Caburnay)
- Siete Teros Serado (From Grandmaster Marcilino Ancheta)
"Jeet Kune Do is more than just a philosophy, it contains a program of hand and foot fighting techniques that Bruce Lee developed based on universal principles. Bruce Lee developed based on universal principles."
LAMECO S.O.G - JEET KUNE DO - VERDADERA DESTREZA -
- Sungkiti Fan (from Grandmaster Billy Baaclo)
- Three People Combat Eskrima (from Grand Master Timoteo E. Maranga) LAMECO was composed from the words LONG - MEDIUM - SHORT the synthesis of the three distances of combat with all types of weapons and empty hand. A practitioner of LAMECO honors all Philippine Martial Arts, Punong Guro dedicated his entire life to visit, train and become an instructor with the greatest number of Grand Masters from all over the Philippines. In addition, he developed training methods and equipment to accelerate the combative ability of his students, he was a genius and ahead of his time in every aspect.
OLD SCHOOL JEET KUNE DO
Jeet Kune Do is an individual expression of a system and curriculum of combat techniques and philosophy created by a great martial arts master, Bruce Lee. It is based on principles and concepts, movements and techniques that conceive of the hands and feet as weapons, and also considers all aspects of self-defense in a violent altercation with more than one opponent.
Jeet Kune Do is more than a philosophy, it contains a program of hand and foot combat techniques that Bruce Lee developed based on universal principles. This system of techniques highly refined by its founder combined with philosophical elements that provide a very real form of empty hand combat. It cannot be called a style either, because its founder never intended it to be a closed system, but JEET KUNE DO has a structure, a base of techniques and a philosophy, mainly in learning to discard what DOES NOT WORK in a fight. At our school we practice OLD SCHOOL JEET KUNE DO to honor Sifu Tim Tackett, Sifu Bob Bremer and Sifu Jim Sewell.

Do you train contact sports?
Contact sports are brutal, in fact proof of this is that practitioners end up quite injured if they don't take proper care of themselves. Nothing we do is based purely on sports training, although we do train boxing and grappling, which are essential for developing the physique. I love all martial arts, all contact sports and combat systems, but I personally have found my place in OLD SCHOOL JEET KUNE DO with Sifu Tim Tackett, in LAMECO S.O.G and KALI ILUSTRISIMO with Guro Dino Flores, and Verdadera Destreza with Master of Arms Joaquin de Diego of the FEEH.
After leaving the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Kali Institute in Spain (where already in 1988 mixed martial arts were trained, from Tai Boxing to Brazilian JiuJitsu, Kali, JKD and a long etc), between 2000 and 2010 I searched incessantly in different knife systems, mainly I trained in all kinds of styles and systems related to bladed weapons, and due to my work in private security I had started to train privately and to promote the first seminars in Spain in Lameco, Kali Ilustrisimo and other edged weapons systems. I organized and promoted the first LAMECO and Kali Ilustrisimo courses in Spain. I went back and forth until I found my true place in Kapisanang Mandirigma with Lameco S.O.G (Sulite Original Group) and Kali Ilustrisimo under the guidance of Guro Dino Flores. After meeting Guro Dino Flores I decided and committed myself 100 percent to the exclusive training of LAMECO S.O.G. and Kali Ilustrisimo with him. I want to make it clear that I started training LAMECO knowing that I was never going to become an Instructor, what has happened is a consequence of pure intention and stubbornness of a few and now others will have the opportunity to do the same.
Kapisanang Mandirigma means "a federation of warriors" and was founded by Guro Dino Flores in 1998, it represents all the major disciplines of the Philippine Warrior Arts. It is not a style, nor does it represent a particular style, but rather it is a federation of practitioners with similar goals that provide a vehicle for growth and practices for self-improvement through the Warrior Arts of the Philippines. It is an organization with a project and focus primarily on preserving and promoting the Philippine Martial Arts, it is very much involved in keeping alive the warrior knowledge and research of all practices and disciplines and martial arts of the Philippines.
Guro Dino Flores is a legend in his own right. When Punong Guro Sulite began receiving challenges in the United States, Guro Dino Flores was personally trained by Punong Guro Edgar Sulite to be one of the first filters for such personal challenges.
Guro Dino Flores began his studies in the early 1980 s in the province of Laguna, Philippines. Older relatives and neighbors from the family's ancestral lands of many generations introduced him to training sessions in their backyard and taught him basic street applications and strategy with the balisong knife during his time in the Philippines. When he moved to the
U.S. in the late 1980's he trained first with Master Henry Bio in Sikaran Arnis and then with Grandmaster Conrad A. Manaois in Ninoy Cinco Teros Arnis and Manaois Eskrima along with his cousins Guro Ariel Flores and Guro Choy Flores with whom I have also had the honor of training. Later in the early 90's Guro Flores was accepted as one of the first members of a private group created by Punong Guro Edgar Sulite known as the Lameco Eskrima Backyard Group. During these private sparring sessions he evolved from an aggressive fighter to a more technical and precise one. To the point of being recognized by Punong Guro Edgar Sulite as the most skilled fighter in applying his fighting techniques in actual combat. During this time, Punong Guro Edgar Sulite personally chose Guro Dino to fight in his challenges. Not everyone had this honor. In addition to possessing all of LAMECO's general Eskrima curriculum, he is a container of LAMECO's private teachings and private sparring curriculum. He is certified to teach under Grand Master Christopher Ricketts and Grand Master Tony Diego, two other Grand Masters of Kali Ilustrisimo. In addition Guro Dino was privately trained for several years in California and in the Philippines by system heir and teacher Ireneo L. Olavides at Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO. Guro Dino was offered to be the first International Art Representative, but respectfully declined for personal reasons.
I could talk for hours about all that my Instructors have taught me but it would be meaningless without first talking about what for me is the real background of training martial arts. Of course the most important thing is self-defense, something that could take several pages, but nowadays there is little talk about what really matters such as loyalty, discipline, respect and real trust in oneself and in those who claim to be your friends. I have learned to respect all martial arts and systems of combat and self-defense, but above all people. Ego is a necessary mental construct, but it can also be dangerous if not trained correctly. It has taken me more than 20 years to become a JEET KUNE DO Instructor, more than 20 years to become a LAMECO Instructor, in fact when I started training they made it very clear that it was no longer possible to become a Lameco Instructor and yet now I am endorsed by several LAMECO Instructors and thanks to a few others many others now have that possibility, I do not intend to stop training ever and although sometimes life does not give for everything, the important thing is that you have to surround yourself with authentic, loyal and constant people who understand and know, and have paid the price, to get where they have come. Although this has become a supermarket of easily accessible martial techniques, I know that the Certificates I have could not be bought, but I had to earn them with sweat, blood and injuries on some occasions. Currently and after 10 years of demonstrating a clear intention and constancy I have three students who have been certified as Instructors in my school, one is Gabriel Pita who decided to leave the martial arts but Carlos Kathan and Miguel Angel Agudo have continued to support me and have already reached the level of Instructor in JKD and my selfdefense system DEXTREZA and are now under the guidance and mentoring of Guro Dino Flores and have been recommended for the Kapisanang Mandirigma Instructors program.
VERDADERA DESTREZATRUE SKILL
I also study and teach Verdadera Destreza with Joaquin de Diego which is a historical school of Spanish fencing. It is a total method of fighting with all types of edged weapons, some think it is only with sword ropera and daga vizcaína, but it encompasses up to 16 edged weapons that a True Destreza Master had to master to be named Fencing Master at a time in history when Spain dominated on battlefields around the world. Something I have wanted to honor and in fact it was through my training at Kali Ilustrisimo that I was drawn to the Martial Arts of Spain. There is even the treatise on the Philosophy of Weapons, and its Dexterity and Christian Aggression and Defense. The combat techniques of True Destreza were documented from 1582 to 1862 because firearms did not always work and soldiers still used edged weapons to fight. In addition, Joaquin de Diego and I are currently creating a knife fighting techniques curriculum from the Baratero knife fighting system. We have to do our best to keep all our traditions alive. My school or Sports Club Room 1705.
Why is the hall called 1705?
The name of the hall is 1705 in homage to Francisco Lorenz de Rada, the last treatise on "true dexterity". The culmination of the Spanish combat system with weapons that was born from the evolution of the "vulgar destreza" and which in turn gave rise to the "Indian destreza". The adaptation of the vulgar and true dexterity to the peculiarities of the overseas provinces of the Spanish Empire.

What does the combat system of the "true dexterity" consist of?
It is a system that was created in Spain and developed throughout the three centuries that the Empire lasted. It was based on three principles that are very similar to Japanese Budo. Christian philosophy, art and science, and finally, experience. The first of the three principles is that it is a system based on honor and defense, not offense. The second is that it employs knowledge in such a way that it is not necessary to be stronger or faster than your adversary, but more "dexterous", that is to say, more skillful,... smarter. The third is based on experience, work and discipline. Without it, the theory, however good it may be, cannot be effective.
Why did you consider the discipline of "true skill" so important to study?
Because it is a combat system that was born and developed by and for people with a culture that is ours, and which also proved to be effective and fearsome. The English used to say of the Spaniards "Spaniards give them to us at sea,... and on land, may St. George protect us". Even the Chinese and Japanese learned by force to respect the Spanish soldiers. Especially after the battles of Manila against the former and Cagayan against the latter.
What are the characteristics of the system?
As I have already mentioned, it is a form of combat that develops the skill, therefore the reflexes, the adaptation to the opponent and the internalization of the movements. No thinking, only feeling through weapons. Through what was called "touch", especially the sword. The main weapon of dexterity, although not the only one. The dexterous of dexterity had to know and dominate the combat with 16 weapons and their combinations. It was said that "where a Spaniard does not reach with his hand, he does it with the tip of his sword".
SELF-DEFENSE SYSTEM "DEXTREZA"
https://kali-jeetkunedo.com
https://timoteofredianelli.com
Whatsup:
This fighting system can be applied anywhere and against any opponent, in single, multiple or battle duels. Moreover, unlike Japanese systems, in which there is no room for left-handers, the skill teaches ambidexterity. Rada's motto, in his great work "Nobility of the Sword", published in 1705. Date that as I said, gives name to our school. Well, Rada's motto is "ab una et altera dexter". Which translated from Latin means "Dexter of one and of the other". But it not only refers to the use of both hands, but also to the use of body and mind. To the knowledge and martial use of human duality in all its facets. So true dexterity is not only a fighting system. As I mentioned before, it is a principle of life for noble men in hard times.
Was it a system then only for the nobility?
Not exactly, but its birth is. The differences with "vulgar or vulgar dexterity" are several. It is not a system of chained lethal tricks like the first one. True dexterity allows not having to "finish" the opponent, especially through the so-called "conclusions or finishing moves". A set of actions that allow the disarmament or control of the opponent's weapon without the need to kill him.
The noble origin of the system is also due to the fact that its mastery requires more time, and therefore more money, than the vulgar dexterity needed to be really effective. But in the end, both, vulgar and true, like the Indian, were in the hands of our ancestors, equally lethal.
Francis I, King of France said of the Spaniards: "Spain only stops armed men". And so it has been for centuries, because not only soldiers and nobles knew how to fight. The common people were also dangerous with the simplest weapons. Sticks, knives and razors were widely used in a violent world with strict rules and codes.
In our room we are also investigating Spanish knife fighting using the "manual del baratero" as a basis.
"I have learned to respect all martial arts and systems of combat and self-defense and systems of combat and self-defense, but above all people"
What a curious name. Who was a baratero?
The barateros were or were people of bad life, specialized in collecting debts and pulling knives and knives on demand. The "manual del baratero" published in 1849 is a manual that includes the main concepts for the use of razors, knives and scissors. Popular weapons, which the common Spaniards knew and should have known, as they demonstrated the hard way to the invaders during the Napoleonic wars in Spain.
Is it also a Spanish system?
Yes, it is. It is a system of its own, but it has a lot to do with other similar systems such as the gaucho knife for example. In the end, all fighters have the same physiognomy, with personal strengths and weaknesses, but with the same biology. Therefore, it is each particular weapon that determines the possibilities and the way to use them. To this is added the context and the objectives, which have to do with the way of being of those who created those particular fighting systems. Of the culture of that society and of the time in which they were created. We have chosen to study and practice the fighting systems of our ancestors. Spanish systems that fuse weapons with our way of being. The skill, evolved over time and was adapted to different weapons and war contexts. Just like our culture, which is the result of centuries of mixture and diversity, and which has given rise to our particularities. Thus, the skill and other forms of Spanish fighting evolved in America and the Overseas Provinces. They adapted to all kinds of weapons and in the Philippines, for example, gave rise to unique combat systems through the fusion of the islands' own tradition with the contributions that came from the Peninsula and America. The Eskrima Filipina, Lameko, the Kali Ilustrisimo,... all are the result of crossbreeding with the Spanish martial arts. It is therefore our responsibility to spread and preserve them,... because they have proven to be, above all, effective and functional combat systems. Interestingly, JEET KUNE DO has principles and techniques that come from fencing.

BUDO MASTERS 2025
The event:
As usual, (only stopped by the pandemic) Budo International magazine has the honor to gather periodically its friends in a big international event.
The objective is to meet again, make new friends, exchange experiences, contacts, learn from each other, always in an atmosphere of camaraderie, honor and respect.
The event consists of a great seminar on Saturday held together, where attendees will rotate to learn with all the Masters.
That same night will take place the Grand Gala Dinner, with traditional Canarian food and special performances, culminating with the presentation of diplomas to the Masters, photographs, etc ....

SOHA Retreats with Royce Gracie in Portugal!
As I told you last month, BJJ camps have also arrived in Europe! Now I must also tell you that the quality of the camps and retreats varies greatly, but as is the case, there is always something for everyone!
But I am sure that SOHA Retreats, under the direction of Manuel Benages, will set a whole new standard. Not only in the quality of the retreat, but also in the quality of the trainers he has selected for his training camps. He seized the opportunity at the first SOHA retreat in Portugal.
He had booked none other than Royce Gracie himself as a trainer. That wasn't so easy, because it's not easy to get the MMA legend and active seminar leader from the USA. Everything must be perfectly organized. Royce Gracie is still the number one MMA legend today and travels almost daily to spread his father Hélio Gracie's Jiu-Jitsu all over the world.
Who is Manuel Benages and what is SOHA Retreats?
Manuel sees himself as a passionate entrepreneur and mental health advocate who is committed to making a positive impact on people's lives. As founder of the Mental Wellness Charity, he has developed a unique approach to mental health that has changed the lives of countless people for the better. He is also the co-founder of "Wellness by Manuel", a range of candles and wellness products that enhance the home and work environment with calming scents and a peaceful atmosphere. He is also the owner of SOHA Retreats, where he runs transformational retreats around the world, helping people to find balance and inspiration in their lives. As Sports Director and Head of Relations for the TRU Athlete International Sports Festival in London, he is passionate about promoting health and wellbeing through sport and community events. With many years of experience in entrepreneurship and wellness, he is always looking for new ways to make a positive impact and connect with like-minded people. The success of SOHA Retreats can be seen!
In Portugal with MMA legend Royce Gracie!
Imagine someone told you that you had the unique opportunity to train for several days with Royce Gracie himself in Portugal - practically on your own doorstep! What would your reaction be; would you pass it up? Right, it was clear to me that I couldn't pass up this opportunity! A top-class retreat that offered all martial arts enthusiasts the unique opportunity to meet the legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pioneer Royce Gracie and learn directly from him. Again and again I hear sentences like: "...yes, but the new BJJ generations don't even know who Royce Gracie - or Rickson Gracie - is!". Maybe that happens in your BJJ schools, but in our school, everyone knows who these two true BJJ and MMA legends are, because no one has done as much for our sport as Royce Gracie and Rickson Gracie.
“Imagine someone told you that you had the unique opportunity to train for several days with Royce Gracie himself in Portugal”
If we give Jiu-Jitsu / Ju-Jutsu and all other wrestling and grappling sports the attention they deserve today, it is because of the Gracie family and especially these two great names.
To train with Royce Gracie is to receive a rare and encouraging legacy of combat experience, a chance to develop robust self-defense skills anchored in grace and strategic skill. The experience is tailored to encourage personal breakthroughs and ensure that people at all levels of performance find the guidance they need to progress. Learning the true Hélio Gracie Jiu-Jitsu from its source is the highest of all possibilities, and those who have drunk of it know exactly what I'm talking about; I've been drinking of it for the last thirty years, and I'm ever grateful for it.
On
the
road together with SOHA Retreats and Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu!
When we finally checked in with our suitcases at Zurich airport at 5:30 in the morning, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand I was excited to be back on the mat with Master Royce, on the other hand I had managed to get my assistant coach from Zurich, Ben Kellens, and my Dojo partner from Berlin, Thomas Mehnert, to join me on this adventure. I knew they would benefit 100% from being on the mat with Master Royce and learning directly from him for several days, but I didn't know the SOHA Retreats yet and hoped that the location would be suitable for us.
After we landed in Faro and our driver picked us up before we left the airport, it was clear that the SOHA organization had thought of everything. During the drive, Ben and I talked about many things concerning Gracie Concepts® HQ, including the future of our growing network across Europe. After an hour's drive, we arrived at "Vila Foia" in Monchique, where we were immediately welcomed by the hotel owner and the super nice staff. Vila Foia
can truly be described as a hidden gem with an unforgettable view. The nature, the natural waters, the air quality, and this absolute tranquility are the perfect place to find yourself. If you are looking for peace and quiet here, you are guaranteed to find it!
The retreat also took place at the beautiful Vila Foia, located in the small, colorful mountain town at the foot of the Fóia and Picota mountains in Portugal. From here you have a unique
panoramic view over the 25 km long mountain valley, which ends at the Atlantic Ocean, and a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. You can enjoy this landscape at any time. The cozy rooms offer a unique and relaxing atmosphere where you can experience a lot of comfort in a quiet environment to really relax. For breakfast, there was everything your heart desired every morning, and if you couldn't find it on the breakfast buffet, you could turn to the kitchen staff, who were guaranteed to fulfill every wish, no matter how small. There was also plenty of home cooking for lunch and dinner and one evening we even went to a nearby restaurant which served excellent local meat dishes.
From Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to Yoga and sound mediation!
The younger and more athletic participants really had the opportunity to put together a full program from 6.30 in the morning until late in the evening. The morning started with a Yoga class, then a breakfast buffet, followed by Jiu-Jitsu training with Royce and, after a shower, lunch.
In the afternoon, you had time for yourself or could take part in one of the other activities. Sometimes after breakfast there was also the opportunity to take part in a short hike or a running workout. In the evening, Master Royce gave us another lesson, this time focusing on the ground, and after dinner we went to watch some UFC fights with Royce, where he was happy to tell us about them and we were allowed to ask him questions. Afterwards we were allowed to take part in a sound meditation before we went to bed.
On the contrary, you had to look carefully at what you didn't want to miss and put together your own timetable. Some people were perhaps a little too euphoric at the beginning, like me, and then I got the comeback and spent a whole day in bed with a high temperature. But even that passed quickly and I was able to enjoy this wonderful place to the full for another day.
Before boarding our return flight, we spent a few hours at the beach, which was only 25 minutes away from Vila Foia. After trying to check in our suitcases at the airport - unfortunately without success - we decided to take a cab to see Faro beach again. Walking around with our full suitcases didn't make much sense, but as it was still over five hours until our departure to Zurich, we walked along the beach and looked for a cozy restaurant. How could it have been otherwise, Ben and I ended up at an Italian restaurant, where we naturally - following our (almost) traditionordered a pizza to have this culinary experience too.
Conclusion: We will be there again next year!
The unique experience of being able to train directly with Royce Gracie for several days in a row was like being back in the early days in California, when I had just met Master Rorion Gracie and his brother Royce and later Master Rickson. For Ben and Thomas, it was certainly a dream they could never have imagined and one they will carry with them forever. I like to talk about my experience with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, especially because I am very grateful for my training with Grandmaster Pedro Hemetério.
For me, "Hélio Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" cannot be compared with today's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and certainly not with modern MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Only those who drink directly from the source and do so over a longer period will understand me. Today, everyone is the founder of new systems and training programs instead of admitting that everything has been done before. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, and just because you repackage it doesn't make you an inventor! In the longer term, you won't even remember it, but what will never be forgotten are the roots from which it all originated.
The SOHA Retreats and the future Royce Gracie Training Camps will open the doors in Europe to be educated and trained by an authentic and professional personality. You should take advantage of this opportunity because it will shape you forever. The goal cannot and should not be to chase after a belt, but to train and nourish yourself in such a way that you can show the next generations how to follow Jiu-Jitsu as a positive path in life.

The 2nd DVD will provide you with all the information of the first level of learning. Students at this level will focus on these 3 guiding principles of the PinPoint™ method: body movement, center control, Kyusho: arm, head and leg points. These elements however, create only the "basic box" capable of containing the more advanced connecting principles, which represent the true effectiveness of the martial arts: root, center, wave, spiral, which together with the study of the axes, lead to a level of effectiveness where the saying "maximum effect with minimum effort" can finally find its concrete expression. The knowledge of the weak parts of the opponent's body combined with the awareness of the correct alignment and structure of our body merge into one. Kyusho becomes real, it ceases to be mystical, there are no secrets in Kyusho! Master Gianluca Frisan and Master Pascut Fulvio will make available to everyone the information learned in over 30 years of experience... information often kept secret, principles perhaps shown but not explained, now they are explained in detail so that you too can learn them and make them yours!

Mae Mai Muay Thai reloaded
Fifteen years ago Budo International published the results of an extensive research that I had carried out for many years about the original emptyhand combat techniques of Siam. This research, conducted with the priceless help of some of the greatest Thai experts in this field, took the final form of two instructional videos and a book titled Mae Mai Muay Thai, the Traditional Fighting System of Thailand. After so many years, this compendium of ancient Thai combat techniques, strategies and principles is still regarded as one of the most complete available on the market.
• Mae Mai and Look Mai Muay Thai
The ancestral principles of Siamese unarmed combat are built upon the traditional basic techniques of Muay called Mae Mai Muay Thai (or Mai Khru) and the complementary or advanced techniques called Look Mai Muay Thai (or Mai Kred). In the ancient past, every Khru Muay (Muay Thai Master) had his own teaching style; however, in every style, once the basic elements had been assimilated, all students started to learn the real fighting strategies, that is to say Mae Mai and Look Mai Muay Thai techniques. Mae Mai or fundamental techniques, represent the founding principles of the Thai style of empty hand fighting and they can also be defined as Mai Khru or Master techniques. Look Mai or Mai Kred (detailed techniques) contain more advanced and sophisticated combat rationales and traditionally were revealed to students who were already so advanced in their learning process that could be trusted by their Khru Muay. Mai Khru
techniques, (that must be learned before undertaking the study of Mai Kred) far from being merely offensive and defensive maneuvers, relatively simple in appearance, are actually the “quintessence” of a complete and sophisticated fighting system created in ancient Siam. Each single technique has been developed over the centuries by Siamese warriors and teachers and is based upon no-nonsense combat principles, tested on the battle field in times of war and in the course of countless sports contests in times of peace (in an authentic scientific process that ended with an accurate assessment of cause and effect).
Analysing Mae Mai Muay Thai more thoroughly, we can say that each one of these techniques represents a complete vision of combat and a complete fighting strategy by itself. The real value, the beauty inherent in such maneuvers, is that every Mae Mai hides universal combat principles that, if properly interpreted, can be developed through the existing variants resulting in many extremely effective martial applications. The Siamese Masters of the past that have codified these sequences of techniques possessed such a mastery of close combat, through personal experience, that managed to condense into 15, easy to reply
maneuvers, a huge quantity of combat principles. In the different fighting styles developed over the centuries in Thailand, practically all the Khru Muay recognize the 15 Mae Mai principles as fundamental. This not being the same thing for the Look Mai. Mae Mai and Look Mai Muay Thai, with all their many variants, make up the foundation of IMBA (International Muay Boran Academy) Technical Syllabus and are mainly based on the research carried out by Prof. Phosawath Saengsawan along the years. The 30 Mae Mai and Look Mai forms that IMBA members practice on a regular basis are at present accepted by most Thai Masters. The 15 Look Mai, as an ideal complement of the 15 basic techniques are generally approved by exponents of all styles. However, this does not exclude the inclusion in the context of Mai Kred of other techniques considered by some Masters of such importance to be worthy of being part of that group. Muay Korat students,
for example, are taught 11 Look Mai, 21 Mae Mai Boran, 5 Basic Strategies (Mae Mai) that, together with the 5 Basic Standing Attacks and 5 Fundamental Maneuvers make up the so-called 47 Technical Portals.
Some Muay Boran scholars claim there Muay Uttardit incorporated 535 fundamental techniques, comprehensive of Chern Muay, Kon Muay, Mae Mai and Look Mai.
On the other hand, Muay Lopburi is based on 5 Mae Mai and 5 Look Mai as the technical pillars upon which the combat skills of a Lopburi boxer are founded.
Muay Chaiya masters of the past stated that there is only one Mae Mai (the Chaiya guard position or Jot Muay) and that Look Mai strategies are generated by the correct application of that fundamental element, just like a good fruit comes from a healthy tree. If Mae Mai are the starting blocks for all Muay Boran students, Look Mai are the true “secret techniques” that every Bramajarn (Grand Master) of the past jealously guarded, revealing them only to his most adept and trustworthy students. If Mae Mai are for
everyone Look Mai are reserved for the elect. If Mae Mai, by definition, can be learned by all trainees Look Mai are beyond the reach of the average practitioner. Achieving mastery of Look Mai is possible but only true champions can reach the heart of those high combat principles. If Mae Mai strategies are both effective and easy to understand, the language of Look Mai is cryptic and few can decode the real meaning of each maneuver without the help of an expert Master. The study of Look Mai can only be initiated after learning all basic concepts included in Mae Mai techniques. This is the commandment of old Masters passed down through the ages and which we still respect today. Only when we have mastered the secrets and the fundamental methods of attack and defence, will it be possible to engage the long hard path towards learning advanced principles hidden in Mai Kred that are by their very nature both complex and hard to learn.
• Mae Mai Muay Thai – The traditional Fighting System of Thailand
This book is an in-depth study of the key elements of the original Siamese fighting system of unarmed combat. From this book readers can have a clear understanding of the mother principles of traditional Muay. In this text book illustrated with 900 high quality colour photos the interested reader will find:
• An historical analysis of the origins of Siamese fighting systems, based on the research carried out with the invaluable help of the Culture Commission of the Ministry of Education of Thailand
• An overview of the basic elements of the traditional Art of Muay Thai: fighting stances, footwork patterns, the body weapons training form, the fundamental defensive techniques.
• A selection of the most effective martial applications of the 15 Mae Mai Muay Thai fighting principles used to counter punches, kicks, elbow and knee attacks.
• Several training drills used to enhance the efficiency of each defensive and offensive technique based on the use of impact training tools.
• The full solo Form of the Mai Khru system shown on a book for the first time.
In order to enhance the comprehension of this book the following instructional videos were published by Budo International in the same year:
• Muay Boran – Mae Mai 1
• Muay Boran – Mae Mai 2
These 2 videos were recorded as an added learning tool following the same structure of the book. In fact, by watching the techniques in motion all Muay Thai students can actually get a better idea of each offense, defense and counterattack.

Self-defense programs are very important nowadays due to the increase of crimes around the world and are more comprehensive than martial arts sports training.
The PFS program has been developed by military experts in the field of combat and high-level martial arts instructors under the supervision of its founder, Master Ahmed Al-Houli, and is now considered one of the most important combat programs in the face of real confrontations. Its practice has spread to several countries. An important program for both military and civilian personnel to protect society.
"... Fifty canarians of the best swimmers to be found, each equipped with a cabarco and a dragon tree tablachina". In this way, indigenous Canary Islanders were used as elite troops in the assault on Tenochtitlan, Mexico, early 16th century. This new work of the Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario, focuses on the traditional Tolete, its characteristic grip with one hand in the center, the guards (right, troquiada, ...) and the basic techniques (correderas, vueltas, lazos, molinetes...), as well as its application in combat combinations. In the traditional Tolete canario the objective is to break the armed hand of the attacker and to finish off in a forceful way with a definitive blow. There are no controls or reductions. The opposite happens with its police application, where the proportionality to the aggression and even the aggressor's own integrity is protected by law. The military application does not have these limitations, but its use as defense by the military police does. The characteristics of the Tactical Operational Tolete for the operations of civilian and military police forces favor these aspects as it is an extremely versatile implement. Its dimensions and central grip with effective wrist turns facilitate rapid and repeated striking movements to the armed hand, enabling both its cancellation and the consequent control for an effective reduction, thus preserving the life of the agent and eliminating the threat with the minimum of injury.

Professor Maurizio Maltese presents in this extensive and detailed work the "Scherma Jonica", Ionian fencing, an art cultivated century after century, perfected and made more and more effective by constant practice in every district, village and town of the area straddling the Ionian Sea, between Calabria, Apulia and Basilicata, and with very diverse influences from pre-Roman, Greek, Byzantine and Norman peoples, as well as Spanish and French origin. The knife was the weapon available even to the poorest of men, the farmer and the herdsman, who used it in most of their daily work, from cutting a piece of bread to defending themselves against an aggressor (be it animal or human). As fighting became indispensable to assert one's rights, the need arose to train, to attend a teacher and sometimes a school. In the schools of arms one learned to use other elements in aid or in concert with the knives, such as the jacket to camouflage the blade, which, unbeknownst to the adversary, or the hat. Thus, in Ionian fencing, century after century, many ideas and traditions of different schools, distant in time and space, are mixed: it is obvious to think that each region, if not each Italian village, used its own and different techniques, if only because of the great wealth of forms that the knife had in the country, both in its daily use and in its offensive use.

Kansetsu no Gikō and Shime no Gikō
Locks and choke techniques
Many historical versions explain why there are so many techniques dedicated to the joints. The most widely used version goes back to the origins of armor, which was designed to be flexible and reserved only the joints as targets for attack. Exercises aimed at the joints are known as Kansetsu no Giko.
If we translate literally, the first Kanji Kan reads Seki alone - gate, barrier; the second Setsu reads fushi alone - nodule, junction.... Perhaps the word kansetsu could be translated as joint. Therefore, Kansetsu no Giko can be translated as articulation technique.
Much is said and much has been said about this fantastic form of attack in the arts of war. Kansetsu no giko, or kansetsu waza as it is known in the GendaiBudo arts, corresponds to the techniques of joint locks and twists that give JuJutsu, JiuJitsu and derivative arts all the emphasis of their dangerousness in action. We have seen this in the confrontations of arts such as Judo and JuJutsu with other arts with a more traumatic action, in other words, movements designed to cause physical damage through the impact of their limbs. In the past, the study of Kansetsu no Giko included any form of destruction caused to the opponent by attacking the bone, which brings us to the specific form known as KoppoJutsu.

For a better understanding, see:
As the systems of the body are studied in more depth, you will see how they work to maintain health, protect you against disease and allow the reproduction of the species. For the moment, we will consider how two systems of the body - the integumentary and skeletal systemscooperate with each other. The integumentary system (skin, hair and nails) protects all the body's systems, including the skeletal system, by acting as a barrier between the external environment and the internal tissues and organs. The skin (cutis) is also involved in the production of vitamin D, which the body needs for the proper utilization of calcium. (Calcium is the mineral needed for bone growth and development.) The skeletal system, in turn, provides support for the integumentary system.
SKELETAL SYSTEM
Definition: All the bones in the body, their associated cartilage and joints.
Function: Supports and protects the body, assists in body movements, houses cells that produce blood cells, stores minerals.
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
MUSCULAR SYSTEM
Definition: Refers specifically to skeletal muscle tissue, generally attached to bones (other muscle tissues are smooth and cardiac).
Function: Participates in the execution of movements, maintains posture, produces heat.
In the case of joints, they are supported by muscles. The structural unit of a muscle is a cell or muscle fiber. The functional unit consisting of a motor neuron and the muscle fibers it controls is called the motor unit. The number of muscle fibers in a motor unit varies from one to several hundred, but usually there are around 100. The number of fibers varies according to the size and function of the muscle. Large motor units, where one neuron supplies several hundred muscle fibers, are found in large trunk and thigh muscles, while in the small muscles of the eyeball and hand, where precision movements are required, the motor units contain only a few muscle fibers.
When a nerve impulse reaches the motor neuron in the spinal cord, another nerve impulse is initiated, which causes all the muscle fibers supplied by that motor unit to contract simultaneously. Movements result from an increasing number of motor units being put into action, while the antagonist muscles are relaxed. During the maintenance of a given position or posture, the muscles involved are in a state of reflex contraction. Tonus is the state of excitability of the nervous system that controls or influences skeletal muscles. The maintenance of tone depends on the impulses that reach the brain and spinal cord from the sensory endings in the muscles, tendons and joints.
During body movements, the main muscles are active. These muscles, called agonists or primary motors (g. agon, fight), actively contract to produce the desired movement. A muscle that opposes the action of an agonist is called an antagonist.* As an agonist contracts, the antagonist progressively relaxes; this coordination produces a smooth movement. Antagonists are also activated at the end of a
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
sudden movement to protect joints from injury (for example, the hip, knee and ankle joints during a kick in soccer). When an agonist crosses more than one joint, certain muscles prevent the movement of the intervening joint. These types of muscles are called synergists (g. syn, together, + ergon, work). Synergists thus complement the action of agonists. Other muscles, called fixators, steady the proximal parts of a limb (such as the forearm) while movements are taking place in the distal parts (such as the hand). The same muscle can act as an agonist, antagonist, synergist or fixator under different conditions.
Technical specificity implies knowing the exact angle to surrender the action of the muscles, enabling a direct attack on the desired joint.
It is worth mentioning the famous spinal twists that were applied in the Middle Ages. In this respect, there are two types of reasoning: the samurai with and without armor. Most spinal locks were only possible when the samurai was not wearing Yoroi. Obviously, techniques were developed for this purpose using the Yoroi. However, it's important to remember the short stature of the Japanese people and how they moved in war, with the katana as their priority. In other words, with the Yoroi, their movement would be difficult and most of the twists involved using their heads and necks, which were protected by Kabuto. But..., here we go:
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
JOINT STRUCTURE OF THE LUMBAR SPINE:
Intervertebral discs: The articular surfaces are formed by the upper and lower faces of the bodies of the vertebrae. On these faces there is a depression which is softened by a cartilaginous lamina, giving rise to the intervertebral discs, which join them and are reinforced by the anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments. The anterior ligament is very loosely connected to the disc, while the posterior ligament is adhered to the surface of the disc, and is thinner in the lumbar region than in the others.
The thickness of the intervertebral disc is greater in the anterior part of the cervical and lumbar portions, where the spine describes an anterior convex curve. It performs an important function for the spine, transmitting load from one vertebral body to another, paradoxically transmitting and restricting the movement of the intersomatic joints. They also function as shock absorbers. This phenomenon occurs from the second cervical vertebra to the sacrum.
Vertebral discs are made up of two parts: a peripheral, fibrous part (annulus fibrosus) and a central, soft, gelatinous part (nucleus pulposus). The annulus fibrosus is made up of several concentric layers or lamellae of collagen fibers and fibrous cartilage. The nucleus pulposus is a gelatinous substance comprising forty to sixty percent of the discs, containing eighty-eight percent water, formed by a fundamental mucopolysaccharide substance.
Lumbar Joint: the small structures that make up a lumbar joint between the articular processes have articular capsules, intra-articular structures and articular facets. The articular capsules appear at the dorsal, superior and inferior margins of each apophyseal joint. The collagen fibers run in a transverse direction from one articular process to another. The fibrous capsule at its anterior level is replaced by the ligamentum flavum, later reinforced by the deep fibers of the multifidus. In the superior and inferior portions, the capsule is loose and forms subcapsular pockets containing fat.
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
Articular structures: the intra-articular meniscoid structures are of three types:
Fibroadipose meniscoids - A failure in this structure can be considered the cause of an acute blockage of the spine. A patient is observed to adopt a flexed posture, as this reduces the strain on the joint.
Adipose Cushions - Found at the upper and lower ends of the joint, both the fibroadipose meniscoids and the adipose cushion.
The Connective Tissue Rim - Is a cuneiform thickening of the inner surface of the capsule, filling the spaces left by the folded margins of the articular cartilages, favoring an increase in the contact area of the articular facets.
Articular facets: The lumbar apophyseal joint is formed by the articulations of the inferior facets of a lumbar vertebra with the superior facets of the underlying vertebra.
The position of the facets in the lumbar region differs from shape to direction and range of movement in a mobile segment. The location of these joints affects the prevention of anterior dislocation and rotational displacement of the intervertebral joint. In joints in the frontal plane, the flat articular facets are less suitable for axial rotation. The joint in the sagittal plane can oppose rotation, however, these joints are less susceptible to anterior dislocation. In joints with curved articular facets, the anteromedial end of the superior facet faces backwards and opposes forward movement.
C-shaped joints have a larger surface area and offer greater resistance to forward movement than J-shaped joints. Both joints ("C" or "J") effectively oppose rotation.
Joint capsule: the joint capsules are attached to the margins of the articular facets, are thin and loose, and allow movement in the sagittal plane.

So, you understand that for a technique to work, in this case I've specified the keys relating to the spine that couldn't be classified solely as kansetsu waza, you realize that it's not something simple and easy to apply, especially within its classic and traditional form.
Obviously, in an unsuccessful fall or even when hit by a car, fractures are imminent, but it's not something thought out and meticulously applied within a technical factor, but classified as a fatality. Aiming for a technique using the resources of scientific knowledge about joints implies, first and foremost, knowing how they work.
Also widely used, and a fundamental part of the Seiteigata Kata of arts linked to the practices of Kansetsu no Gikō, is the attack on the ankle, which since ancient times has been targeted both by bladed weapons and in fights and individual confrontations with bare hands. In most cases, these techniques follow nage attacks - projection - and are not part of folkloric techniques aimed at grabbing the practitioner's foot and fracturing it before it hits the ground.
In most of their forms, ashi kudaki, as they are referred to in certain kata, correspond to ankle sprain movements.
An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments (the tough, elastic tissue that connects the bones together) of the ankle. Any ligament in the ankle can be injured. Sprains usually occur when the ankle rotates outwards, causing the sole of the foot to turn towards the other foot (inversion).
Sometimes a moderate or severe sprain causes problems even after the ligament has healed. A small nodule can form on one of the ankle ligaments, causing constant friction in the joint and leading to chronic inflammation and, ultimately, permanent injury.
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
Supposedly, in the past, an opponent who fell victim to a technique like this would rarely regain their original form of movement.
Nowadays, according to some students who are doctors, surgery is rarely necessary. A nerve that runs along one of the ankle ligaments can also be damaged in a sprain. An injection of a local anesthetic often relieves the pain and tingling (neuralgia), sometimes permanently. Individuals with an ankle sprain may walk in a way that overloads the tendons (the strong, flexible cords of tissue that connect a muscle to a bone or a muscle to another muscle) on the outside of the ankle, leading to inflammation. This disorder, known as peroneal tenosynovitis, can cause chronic swelling and pain on the outer side. Treatment consists of wearing ankle supports that limit the movements of the joint.
When the Ashi Kudaki was unsuccessful, the opponent only suffered a nervous reverberation. This could become a neuroma in the future. The nerves that innervate the sole of the foot and the toes are located between the bones of the toes. Pain in the front of the sole of the foot can be caused by non-cancerous tumors of nerve tissue (neuromas).
In the early stages, the neuroma may only cause a discreet pain around the fourth toe, which is occasionally accompanied by a burning or tingling sensation. In general, these symptoms are more pronounced when the individual wears certain types of footwear. As the disorder progresses, a constant burning sensation can radiate to the fingertips, regardless of the type of footwear worn. The individual may also feel as if there is a marble or pebble inside the anterior region of the plantar surface of the foot.
As a consequence of this unsuccessful technique when it comes to foot pain, pain involving the joints of the four smallest toes is very common and is usually caused by poor alignment of the joints. This malalignment can result from the arch of the foot being too high or too low, causing the toes to remain flexed (hammer toes). The constant friction against the flexed toes causes the skin lining the joint to thicken, resulting in the formation of a callus. Treatment aims to relieve the pressure caused by poor alignment.
Thus, we can see the consequences that in the distant past could have retired a great warrior ad infinitum. So here's a warning about practicing this type of twisting.
SHIME NO GIKKŌ - STRANGULATION TECHNIQUES
There are many techniques for strangling your opponent. At the beginning of the century, according to some old teachers, when you spoke of a strangulation technique, it was something marginal and considered an imminent thought of a pathology, in other words, it couldn't be normal for a teacher to teach it to students. Nowadays, with the modernization of combat sports and especially the game of submitting to the opponent in the act of confrontation, it has become just one more artifact in the countless ways developed to overpower the opponent.
In order to better understand, the techniques of Shime Gikkō or Shime Waza can be divided into two:
CHI TOMERU - BLOOD INTERRUPTION
KI TOMERU - AIR INTERRUPTION
We'll begin our analysis with Chi Tomeru techniques applied to the Kubi (neck).
The heart pumps blood through a main artery called the aorta. This main artery then divides into several branches, successively forming thousands of smaller arteries, so that each region of your body has its own system of arteries, feeding it with fresh, oxygenrich blood.
Arteries are rigid on the outside and soft on the inside. An artery actually has three layers making up its wall: an outermost layer of tissue, a middle muscle layer and an innermost layer made up of endothelial cells. The muscular layer is elastic and very resistant. The innermost layer is quite smooth, so that the blood can flow easily, without obstacles to its passage.
The muscular wall of the artery helps the heart in its function of pumping blood. When the heart beats, the artery expands as it fills with blood. When the heart relaxes, the artery contracts, exerting a force that is sufficient to push the blood forward. This rhythm between the heart and the arteries results in an efficient circulatory system.
You yourself can feel your artery expand and contract. As long as the artery is in sync with the heart, you can measure the heart rate by counting the contractions of the arteries. This is how we check our pulse.
The arteries drain the oxygen-rich blood into the capillaries, where the exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide actually takes place. The capillaries then drain the blood laden with excreted substances into the veins, which transport it back to the heart and lungs.
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
When we talk about Chi Tomeru applied to the neck, we need to know a little about the main arteries that connect the heart to the brain.
- Carotid arteries: One on each side of the neck, sending blood to the respective "half" of the brain, but at the front.
- Middle cerebral: One on each side, inside the brain (they arise from the carotid arteries).
- Vertebral: one on each side of the neck (inside the bones of the spine). Sending blood to the back of the brain).
These arteries, in turn, have their respective branches. Thus, any changes up or down can affect cerebral circulation and lead to a stroke.
The most important function of arterial circulation is the maintenance and control of blood pressure (BP), which is the force, or pressure, that the blood exerts on the artery wall. BP depends on cardiac output (CO) and total peripheral resistance (TPR).
When Chi Tomeru occurs, the delivery of oxygenated arterial blood to the brain is interrupted. Naturally, the chemoreceptors would be the ones to correct this. They are sensitive to a lack of oxygen and an excess of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. They are located in the large arteries, next to the baroreceptors. They are stimulated when the pressure drops below 80mmHg. Whenever BP drops, there is a decrease in blood flow to the tissues, with a consequent accumulation of CO2 and H+ in the blood and a decrease in O2 concentrations. These changes stimulate the chemoreceptors, which send a signal to the sensory area of the Vasomotor Center, indicating that BP is low. The reflex response will be an immediate rise in BP, due to stimulation of the vasoconstrictor area and inhibition of the vasodilator area.
In the second type of Shime Gikkō, Ki Tomeru, the interruption is to the passage of air, not blood circulation, as we saw earlier. It is one of the forms of asphyxiation. Contrary to popular belief, there are forms of asphyxiation classified by Legal Medicine as:
Suffocation - Direct: obstruction of the airways. Indirect: external mechanical means.
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
Choking - This is the construction (squeezing of the neck) by the perpetrator's own hands, preventing air from entering the respiratory system (it is eminently intentional).
Strangulation - Mechanical asphyxiation caused by the constriction of the neck by an external force (intentional or accidental).
Hanging - The constriction of the neck by the weight of the body; complete - hanging; incompletenot hanging.
Drowning - Mechanical asphyxiation caused by the penetration of liquid (any liquid).
Burial - Mechanical asphyxiation caused by the penetration of solids (any solid material).
Confinement - Asphyxiation caused by isolation from a place (lack of atmospheric air).
In the case of Ki Tomeru, we are obviously dealing with strangulation. Once the passage of air is interrupted, you have hypoxia.
For a long time in the more modern arts, where the search for harmony has become more evident than the martiality of the techniques, questions about efficiency have been inevitable. In ancient times, it was common to worry about provoking a moment of
syncope in the enemy before executing a technique. We can see this in the older styles of Bujutsu where, most of the time, this was achieved through an atemi or something similar.
Loss of consciousness, called fainting or syncope, happens when the amount of oxygen-rich blood reaching your brain is not enough. Without adequate oxygenation, the brain's metabolism slows down, which causes loss of consciousness until blood flow is restored. Sometimes there may be no advance warning. However, there is usually nausea or nausea and dizziness, sweating and paleness, the vision becomes gray and finally the patient loses consciousness.
About a minute after the fall, as there is no effect of gravity, the blood flow to the brain is re-established and consciousness is regained.
Only around 20% of adults faint due to a heart problem (arrhythmia or structural heart disease). In around 10% of people, the reason is unknown.
In most cases, fainting can be due to a sudden drop in blood pressure and sometimes also a marked reduction in heart rate related to various factors. Ancient masters studied specific techniques with the help of Ijutsu - Oriental Medicine - using a high proportion of impact, seeking to change body pressure. These techniques were developed in certain Ryu who became famous for their skill and effectiveness in using them in combat.
THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF SYNCOPE:
Neurocardiogenic syncope - Emotional tension, standing for long periods without moving, fear or sudden and severe pain can activate the interconnection between your neurological and cardiovascular systems, after long periods of standing without leg activity, which results in the inhibition of your sympathetic nervous system and the excitation of your vagal nervous system. This leads to your heartbeat rapidly decreasing in frequency and arterial pressures decreasing due to dilation of your arteries. As a result, the flow of blood to the brain is reduced to levels incompatible with maintaining consciousness, which is why syncope occurs until the lying down position allows the blood sequestered in the lower limbs to return to the heart and brain.
Syncope due to postural hypotension: After a rapid change to a standing position. When you stand up, your sympathetic nervous system becomes active and releases hormones (catecholamines) into circulation. This leads to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, preserving adequate blood flow to the brain, even in the standing position. With age, the capacity of this cardiovascular response, mediated by the autonomic nervous system, is reduced. Standing up too quickly can lead to an abrupt drop in blood flow to the legs, causing blood pressure to drop suddenly, leading to fainting. Diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, chronic alcoholism and some neurological diseases affect the sympathetic nervous system.
Locks and choke techniques Locks and choke techniques
Medications - Antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics and antidepressants are the drugs most commonly associated with loss of consciousness. These drugs can make the patient more susceptible to changes in blood pressure. They can also prevent your heart from beating faster to meet the needs caused by changing position or exercise. These drugs may also be responsible for causing serious arrhythmias that lead to loss of consciousness.
The experts explained that an adult consumes at least 420 liters of oxygen (640 grams) in 24 hours and exhales 420 liters of carbon dioxide (880 grams).
When these proportions are not respected, hypoxia occurs. The first symptoms are compensatory reactions such as asphyxiation, heart palpitations and an increase in the number of red blood cells in the blood. These reactions allow us to temporarily ensure that the tissues comply with normal oxygen consumption. If the lack of oxygen persists, what is known as "energy starvation" occurs: the pulse weakens and the heart beats more and more slowly. Some people turn pale and break out in a cold sweat. Hypoxia victims lose sensitivity and memory and have difficulty moving. In the most serious cases, fainting and loss of control of the sphincter (the anal muscle responsible for controlling feces) occur. Blood pressure drops, breathing stops and death comes.
Thus, we understand that in order to perform a Shime Gikō technique, both in Chi Tomeru and Ki Tomeru, it is necessary to know how these two parts of the human body work - the blood circulation and the respiratory system.
Breathing in Martial Arts and Life
In martial arts, central to most of the activities, traditions and practice of our styles is the spirit of the martial artists themselves. This ‘spirit’ typically connotes an equanimity in adverse circumstances, a calm and peace, an ability to disconnect from the moment, acting with determination in order to help and protect others. ≠However, at the core of our tranquility is the ability to control our minds and bodies through breathing.
The word spirit originally derives from Latin ‘spirare’ (to breathe) and ‘spiritus’ (breath or breath of a god). This then transferred to the old French ‘espirit’ (spirit or soul) and the Anglo-French ‘spirit’ (life or the animating, vital principle in man).
In the 14th century, the word ‘spirit’ took on additional meanings of a divine power or divine mind. In many ways, our ability to control our breathing leads us to a state of control and tranquility that seems divine in moments of adversity.
There are many breathing techniques, from deep breathing for managing stress to strong and fast breathing (Pranayama breathing) as popularized by Wim Hof as a preparation to cold exposure by flooding the body with oxygen as well as detoxing the body. In martial arts however, the most popular type of breathing is known as ‘box breathing’ or in military parlance, ‘tactical breathing’. Box or tactical breathing consists of breathing in for a count of four, holding your breath for a count of four, exhaling for a count of four and holding for a count of four. This helps relax the nerves and is instrumental for calming the mind and body prior to taking a shot, particularly for snipers. Additionally, when your body initiates a fight or flight response (amygdala hijack), your entire limbic system is short-circuited. Instead of passing visual or audio stimuli through the hippocampus to detect and make sense of what is occurring prior to passing that information to the amygdala (often called the ‘emotional brain’), the limbic system will instead directly engage the amygdala to make an emotional decision of fighting or running, or potentially freezing.
In this moment, your actions may be involuntary, however it’s important that if there are indicators of danger prior to the amygdala hijack, that you start your box breathing immediately to keep as clear a head as possible. Furthermore, the moment you are able to control your emotions and mental state coming out of an amygdala hijack, the first thing you should do is start box breathing to counteract the adrenaline coursing through your body.
The nervous system is split into two broad categories, somatic and autonomic. The somatic nervous system is responsible for motor signals, like reaching out to pick up a glass of water or turning your head. The autonomic nervous system controls organs and glands and is directly associated with heartbeat, organ function and other ‘automated’ body processes. The autonomic nervous system is also sub-divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, responsible for stressresponses and relaxation or cool down, respectively. While most processes fall within either the somatic or autonomic systems, breathing is the only bridge between the two. You don’t need to think about breathing, your body will manage that through the autonomic nervous system, but you also have direct control over your breathing which can directly impact other autonomic functions.
Deep breathing and controlled breathing can help regulate heart rate and also reduce the secretion of cortisol (stress hormone) into the body, both of these automatic responses being responsible for a state of mental imbalance and foggyheadedness as well as a number of other harmful effects. Therefore, as martial artists, it’s important to manage our breathing in general, but especially when we are in stressful situations. This could mean taking a few deep breaths prior to entering the ring for a competition and managing our breathing throughout, exhaling intentionally as we execute a technique or movement and slowing our breathing yet breathing deeply when we find ourselves in an undesirable position.
Whether we are gracefully executing moves in Qigong as a morning workout, exhaling deeply as we take and give strikes in Kyokushin or breathing deeply and slowly as someone takes our back in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, breathing is central to our martial arts journey. The benefits range from higher oxygen levels in our bloodstream to clear headedness, reduced muscle fatigue to calming our nerves and many, many more. As you continue to pursue your own path in martial arts, learn to connect your breathing with the rest of your body and be mindful of the benefits and impacts. You will not only have greater endurance as you train and fight, but you will feel better and super-charge the health benefits you are already gleaning from the physical exercise and mental focus of your training.

The Left-handed Fighters
One can argue that left-handedness is a phenomena to which science is still trying to find its cause. It is estimated that there are around 10-14% of left-handed people in today's world, men being double in number than women. Science hasn't yet found the cause that makes a person left-handed, i.e. we still don't know what makes a person to be born left-handed or right-handed. Some research points to an anomaly in brain structure, whereas some other research and theories talk about genetic inheritance as well as the influence of the hormone testosterone. This would explain why there are so many more left-handed men in comparison to women. Recently, in 2007, scientists from Oxford University have identified the gene which rises the chances of a person to become left-handed.
Many scientists have oriented towards brain research and have found that there are significant differences in brain anatomy between left and right-handed people. Although we use both brain functions in everyday life, one side of our brain is still more dominant than the other. It has been proven that right-handed people's left side of the brain is more dominant, with centers that control speech and language. On the other hand, the right side of the brain has more control over our emotions. In lefthanded people, this division is reversed. Also, in left-handed individuals, both brain hemispheres are equally developed, in comparison to right-handed individuals. This allows them a quicker transfer of information between hemispheres. Also, the excess fibers are an advantage that permits left-handed persons everyday adjustment to the world of right-handed people.
A significantly larger number of neural fibers in the brains of lefthanded people is responsible for a quicker transfer of information between brain hemispheres, which is the reason behind better spatial orientation and a greater success in math, art, architecture. Also, if a left-handed person needs to perform a task with his or her right hand, he or she will do it better than a right-handed person would with his or her left hand (e.g. writing). Left-handed people have a totally different approach to problem solving than their righthanded peers and show enhanced abilities in divergent thinking, i.e. finding different solutions to the same problem (thanks to a better intuition and a greater diversity in ideas). Research has shown a larger sensibility among right-handed persons to their right side, while left-handed persons are equally sensitive to both sides of their bodies. The right hand is a bit larger and stronger in right-handed people, whereas, in left-handed individuals, both hands are equally developed.
The Left-handed Fighters Stainko Stainko The Left-handed Fighters
Mothers that are over 40 years of age during pregnancy have a greater chance to give birth to a baby who will become lefthanded. The chances for this to happen are 28% higher than in women who are in their 20's. Interestingly, as many as 90% of babies suck the thumb of their dominant hand while still in their mother's womb so the ultrasound can also give you an idea of what the baby will be like once it is born. As already stated, the connections between the left and right side of the brain are faster among left-handed people. This means that information is transmitted in a faster manner which makes left-handed people more efficient in processing a larger amount of information that are emitted through both sides of the brain. This is one of the main reasons why various research has shown a large rate of left-handed persons among professional athletes, especially in one-onone sports, i.e. sports that include two opponents such as tennis, table tennis, baseball, martial arts or fencing.
The Left-handed Fighters Stainko Stainko The Left-handed Fighters
Research has proven how visual information received by the sportsman (fighter or player) is processed by the right brain hemisphere. This is why information, in case the athlete is left-handed, travels faster to the brain center that is in charge of motor skills in as much as 20 to 30 milliseconds. Thanks to these better spatial skills and a quicker motor skill reaction, left-handed persons are more successful in martial arts. So, the advantage or left-handed persons in martial arts are both physiological and tactical. The reason being a faster connection between the left and right side of the brain hemispheres and, simultaneously, a more frequent usage of both brain hemispheres thanks to which they are, in addition to a better spatial assessment, capable of thinking and reacting faster.
Also, left-handed people are extremely adapted to those who are right-handed because they constantly come across them. In comparison, right-handed people adapt much more difficultly to their left-handed opponents. Sportsmen whose left hand is more dominant present a much bigger threat because of their "reversed” body stance. In all sports where athletes face each other, lefthanded ones have a significant advantage so the same goes for martial arts. Their abilities are best seen in sports where a very quick reaction is necessary to confuse the opponent who is used to fight a right-handed person. The reason is simply because right-handed athletes are used to fighting right-handed opponents.
To simplify, a left-handed athlete is used to right-handed opponents and has frequently had the chance to fight them and has also trained among them. On the other hand, right-handed athletes rarely have the chance to train with or fight against a left-handed peer and this is where their shortcomings are best seen. So, when faced with a left-handed opponent, a surprise element comes into play which is an advantage for the left-handed person. A left-handed fighter leads his attack with his right hand and his fighting tactics are developed by using the right side of his body. He does this so he can give a stronger, faster and a more precise punch with his left hand which, in turn, confuses the right-handed fighter unadapted to this style of combat. Right-handed athletes develop their fighting tactics and punches with the left side of their bodies so they can hit more precisely and strongly with their right hand (after the left hand, they cross their punch with their right hand) so fighting against a left-handed opponent is confusing for them.
David “Sensei” David “Sensei” Southpaw
These left-handed advantages have been spotted a very long time ago so, more than 3000 years ago, a fighter named Ehud won and killed the evil Moabite King Eglon which was described in the Bible. According to the legend, Ehud came from the Benjamin tribe for which some biblical experts believed was trained by a warrior squad to use their left hands. Also, according to a legend, the Roman Emperor Commodus loved to fight in the Roman arena where one special characteristic helped him to be invincible- he was left-handed. Most martial arts fighters have used 90% of their time fighting right-handed opponents. This means that they will be very surprised to get punched from the other side, which is something they do not expect to happen. This advantage has helped left-handed fighters to be a bit more dominant in martial arts (55%) in comparison to their right-handed peers.
First in boxing and, a bit later on, in other martial arts sports, the stance in which a left-handed fighter sets his right hand and leg forward, leading the fight with his right hand and then turning his right hip and punching with his left dominant hand is called the "southpaw stance”. According to some legends, a 19th century fighter called William "Bendigo” Thompson is responsible for introducing the southpaw stance. Some other boxing experts consider the left-handed boxer Al McCoy to be responsible for endorsing the stance. He became a world champion in 1910 and his nickname was Southpaw. According to some legends, the very name comes from baseball. Some sports historians claim that the term was coined because of the baseball pitch orientation (the pitch, i.e. its lines are oriented towards the west) so that the Sun wouldn't shine in the players' eyes. This is why the lefthanded pitcher has his left hand turned towards the south. In the beginning, the term "southpaw stance” denoted something unusual and was known to be used in sports since 1840.
The advantages of left-handed fighters aren't expressed only among boxers (or in savate-boxing, kickboxing, Chinese boxing, etc.), but also in karate, tae kwon do, kung fu, capoeira as well in wrestling, judo, ju jitsu, aikido, MMA, fencing and other martial arts disciplines. The technique of performing certain grips is a bit different in left-handed fighters, their creativity is somewhat larger and their ability to adapt in using their right or left hand needs to be significantly bigger. This is why some
The Left-handed Fighters Stainko Stainko The Left-handed Fighters
left-handed fighters' techniques (certain punches, various punching combinations, throws, levers, pinning their opponent to the ground or choking) can greatly confuse a right-handed athlete. As said before, when a right-handed fighter is faced with a left-handed one, there is an element of surprise. The surprise is even greater if a left-handed fighter started the fight in a classic right-handed stance (his left hand and foot are set forward) and then, during the match, he switches to a southpaw stance, i.e. makes a switch-hitter. The term "switch-hitter” is used for those fighters who deliberately switch from a right-handed stance to a left-handed stance or vice versa, in order to confuse their opponents during combat.
Left-handed children who were forced by their parents or teachers to write with their right hands has caused a large number of (originally) left-handed people to use both their right and left hand efficiently. This is especially
The Left-handed Fighters Stainko Stainko The Left-handed Fighters
present in Asia, i.e. among the Chinese, the Koreans and the Japanese because their script (because of its characteristics) cannot be written by using the left hand. This is why there are only 2% of left-handed people registered in China, i.e. only this amount of people have declared to be left-handed (they eat by using their left hand), while in Japan, this percentage is a bit over 4%. According to this statistics where, allegedly, there aren't more than 2-4% of left-handed people in Asia (which is impossible), we shouldn't be surprised that a term for left-handed fighters isn't specified in Eastern martial arts, in comparison to the "southpaw stance”.
However, people cannot be simply divided into two homogeneous groups (left and right-handed ones). It is more of a continuum on which ends there are two smaller groups of exclusively left and right-handed fighters. Most of us are somewhere in between, having a stronger or weaker predisposition to use our right hand.

In most Western civilizations, cars are made to fit right-handed people. We can add musical instruments, various tools, ITM machines, computers and even scissors to this list. Left-handed people were born in a right-handed world so the majority is welladapted to it because the brain simply functions that way- it gets used to anything. However, statistics tells us that left-handed people are more prone to injuries and this is so probably because they live in a right-handed world. The clumsiness of left-handed people in a world designed for right-handed ones is in stark contrast with their larger success in individual sports such as tennis, baseball, fencing or martial arts.
Unfortunately, left-handedness has been considered as an undesirable phenomena for centuries, sometimes even as something pathological. Even the Ancient Romans translated the word "sinister” not just as "left”, but also as "bad” and birds that flew in from the left side were a premonition of bad luck. In India and Indonesia, holding cutlery with your left hand is considered to be rude. In other Asian countries, left-handedness is thought of as something undesirable. However, not all right-handed people are completely righthanded. We all have our "left” and "right” moments. This is why it is not so simple to divide people into only two groups. They might perform some actions by using one hand and other actions by using the other.
Moreover, some actions such as writing or eating, i.e. using cutlery are under a strong social pressure during the process learning and perfecting these skills, even today. Even in countries that support left-handedness such as the USA or the Netherlands, you cannot find a person that shakes his or her hand with their left hand. We live in a right-handed world and we are all, to some extent, included in this game- we know which hand to offer in a handshake, which hand to lift when swearing in front of a judge, where to place the guest of honor, etc. But are you really sure that you are left or right-handed? If you aren't, here are a few tricks that you can
David “Sensei” David “Sensei” Southpaw
try out. Wink- if you are left-handed, you will instinctively do this with your left eye. Clap your hands- if you are left-handed, the upper hand will be your left one. Intertwine your fingers- the upper thumb will belong to your left hand. Lean your head to your shoulder- if you have automatically done this to your left side, chances are you are left-handed. However, this doesn't have to be correct because the real truth is buried deep inside your brain.
It is commonly thought that left-handed people use their left hand and the left side of their bodies as dominant and, if they write with it, we call them "left-handed”. But there is a slight confusion surrounding the terms. We can actually discuss left and right-handed as well as left and right-footed people because they are all distinctive according to those parts of their bodies. A "lefty” is someone who is left-handed, left-footed, left-eyed and left-eared. But a left-handed person doesn't have to be a true lefty, i.e. he or she doesn't have to be left-footed or left-eared. Those are not the same terms. The same goes for right-handed people. We can identify a left-eyed person if he or she looks through a keyhole by closing his or her right eye. A left-eared person will try to hear remote sounds by unconsciously leaning or twisting his or her head towards the sound with their left ear. Also, he or she will place the phone on his or her left ear. However, in martial arts, we are most interested in left-footed persons.
A left-footed person is one who kicks the football with his or her left leg. Also, in combat, such a person will kick his or her opponent with his or her left leg because it is more dominant. Various scientific research have shown that there are approx. 10 to 14% of lefthanded people in the world and as many as 30% of left-footed people which shows that there is no direct link between these two characteristics. Also, research has shown that it isn't easy to call a person a true lefty or a righty because people can be either true or disharmonious lefties. The latter use their left hand for writing but will in unplanned situations wink with their right eye, cross their right leg over their left leg, wave with their right hand or, in martial arts, kick their opponent with their right (dominant) leg. The same can be valid for righties. However, true lefties are significantly smaller in number and there are many more true righties.
The Left-handed Fighters Stainko Stainko The
Left-handed Fighters
This is why we cannot claim that left-handed people are simply functioning in contrast or contrary to left-handed people. It is more correct to say that these persons have different brain functioning, no matter what the reason for it may be. Because of this, disharmonious lefties (whether they are such because of genetics or because of a certain accommodation they went through, i.e. the effects of their society and forcing to use their right hand, etc.) are much more numerous than true lefties. As an example, we can mention the widely popular actor and martial arts master Bruce Lee who, even though he was lefthanded, he kicked with his right leg which was more dominant. By skillfully bouncing in a southpaw stance, he changed his center of gravity from his right to left leg so he could kick in a quicker, more precise and stronger mode with his right leg.
This is how he would confuse his opponents (e.g. boxers, karate masters, kung fu fighters as well as tae kwon do masters, etc.) because they were used to the way that a person standing in that position would kick with his or her back, i.e. left leg. They were perplexed once he would kick them with his right, i.e. front leg mainly because of its speed (he had to cross a much shorter distance to reach his opponent). The speed of his kick, his precision and the element of surprise all added up to perfection. With such bouncing and the skills he showed when changing stance, i.e. changing from a southpaw stance to a right-legged stance would confuse his opponents and they couldn't predict in which combination of hand and leg kicks he would attack next. Such frequent switch – hitter changes seen in the movie "Way of the Dragon” filmed in 1972 (there is a movie fight scene between master Bruce Lee and master Chuck Norris) can surely be taken as an example of a original and creative way of thinking leading to certain innovation and techniques, i.e. fighting tactics that haven't been seen until then.
Southpaw Stance David “Sensei” David “Sensei” Southpaw Stance
Although the movie was filmed in 1972, various martial arts athletes have started to use such quick stance changes, i.e. frequent switch – hitter exchanges several years later. It didn't take long for such a way of fighting to be accepted as useful and can be frequently seen in today's different martial arts, for example, in kick boxing, tae kwon do, karate, sanda kung fu, and many other. Bouncing on your toes as well as a quick change from a right-legged to a southpaw stance (with your back and front foot) are the basic techniques and tactics of today's fighters. Bruce Lee was left-handed, but his right foot was more dominant, which is a rarity seen in as few as 2-3% of people. There is a far larger number of right-handed people who are leftfooted, i.e. whose dominant leg is left. According to some estimates, there are around 22% of such cases.
We do not need to point out that a right-handed fighter who is also left-footed, i.e. whose left leg is more dominant will have a certain advantage in combat. So, from a customary right-handed stance where the left foot is placed forward, they will kick their opponent with their front foot during the fight (the distance they need to cover is smaller). As previously mentioned, this will add to the element of surprise. To reiterate, the surprise will be even greater when such a fighter does a switch – hitter and his opponent comes to see that his right leg is not particularly weaker. This type of kick as well as a combination of leg kicks can drive a person crazy during a fight. After all, one of such fighters is the legendary Bill "Superfoot” Wallace. Also, there are fighters whose right and left feet are equally strong when kicking a football. The same is valid in martial arts where certain individuals can kick their opponent equally strongly, precisely and fast with either leg. Such athletes who have this innate gift are very rare, however, high-quality fighters can reach these characteristics with long-term training.
The Left-handed Fighters Stainko Stainko The Left-handed Fighters
Southpaw Stance David “Sensei” David “Sensei” Southpaw Stance
Some of the greatest thinkers in the history of humankind were left- handed, for example, Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Aristotle, Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Beethoven, Picasso, and many other. There is also a list of wellknown left-handed sportsmen, e.g. Ayrton Senna,Valentino Rossi, Larry Bird, John McEnroe, Maradona, Babe Ruth, Ronaldo, Rafael Nadal, etc. Many successful lefties were and are active in martial arts. We can mention a few- the boxer Oscar de la Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Hector Camacho, Pernell Whitaker, Joe Calzaghe, Ruslan Chagayev; muay thai and kickboxing fighters such as Raymond Daniels, Giorgio Petrosyan; or popular MMA fighters such as Conor McGregor, Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, Robbie Lawler, Matt Mitrione, and many many other.
Left-handed fighters are usually taught to fight in a southpaw stance, however, right-handed fighters can also train in this stance, for various reasons (such as boxers Michael Moorer and Marvin Hagler who were right-handed but fought in a southpaw stance). It is believed that this stance gives the fighter a strategic advantage because of tactical and cognitive difficulties that right-handed fighters have when they are faced with an opponent who is moving in a "mirror-like” way, in contrast from the norm. Left-handed fighters are usually taught to fight also in the right-handed stance, despite of the fact that their left hand is more dominant. Trainers usually do this for several reasons. One of the reasons is the sheer need of the fighter in opposing a right-handed peer. The second reason is that is might surprise the opponent by switching to a southpaw stance (doing a switch – hitter). This tactic is frequently used by left-handed fighters in order to totally disorient their opponent. The third reason is a limited number of trainers who are specialized in teaching the southpaw stance.
If we know which martial arts fighters were left-handed and successful and we analyze their fighting style, then each left-handed fighter can find many useful information. Certainly, each lefty needs to adjust his or her technique and martial arts tactics to himself, taking into account the specifics of each martial arts discipline. We can say that left-handed fighters have a small advantage opposed to right-handed fighters. However, martial arts are not a simple sports discipline and one needs to know how to use this advantage in combat, which is not simple at all.
One of the primary reasons is simply because a good fighter needs to have the courage, strength and endurance, he or she needs to be intelligent and needs to make the right decision. He or she needs to have an excellent technique which can be achieved with persistent training, he or she needs to develop good fighting tactics, needs to be calm and patient during the fight, has to be very tenacious, have a strong desire to win, learn from others' as well as his own mistakes, etc.
And just then, if he is also left-handed, he has the chance to become the new Rocky Balboa one day.
“Some
of the greatest thinkers in the history of humankind were left- handed, for example, Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Aristotle, Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Beethoven, Picasso, and many other.”
The Left-handed Fighters Stainko Stainko The Left-handed Fighters
The knife is the most dangerous and feared weapon in a fight. Very easy to get and very often deadly. The Oliva Combat System defense program against a knife attack involves concrete action, efficiency and perfection. It is a total fight, based on simple knife and non-knife fighting mechanisms. A street fight against an armed person requires first of all psychological management and then technical mastery, which can only be obtained through special training. Only in this way can we deal with fear, to give success to the concepts of fighting, resistance and victory. The system could be described as the civilian version of the C.A.T. system ("Cobra Assault Tactics") taught to the Special Forces, which is characterized by extremely direct, aggressive, simple, fast and very effective mechanisms. Through specific high-level tactical-technical training, certain skills are taught that, along with basic training, allow survival in a confrontation with or without a weapon. These skills include: Sensitivity, Reaction, Explosiveness, Body Coordination, Speed, Timing and of course the most important of all, Killer Instinct. "The essential thing is to be as concrete, efficient and perfect as possible. This is the only way we have a chance of defense". This is the objective of the Oliva Combat System. 40 min.
