Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 504 – August – 2024
The Academy of Martial Movement, fusion of the knowledge of Kyusho Jitsu and Tuite Jitsu of M° Frisan Gianluca together with the knowledge of the Art of Movement of M° Pascut Fulvio, continues the technical progression in the training of high level martial instructors and makes available to all the universal principles hidden in the movements of internal and external martial arts, unifying them and focusing them on precision, to bring Kyusho to a new level. In this 3rd volume, we will continue with a detailed study of the pressure points of the head, exercises and technical efficiency, ways to make the force penetrate the opponent's body ... but not only that, we will understand that really “stun” an attacker can be simple and effective. Before the analysis of the pressure points, their location, the best angle to strike, rub, manipulate ... we continue with the principles of martial movement, a unique feature of our academy. The next step is to understand how the transmission of this force occurs, how to charge the “potential” blow and unload it on the opponent. Block by block, internal and external work on our body will make our body structure and alignment a sharp tool to utilize 'force multipliers' at the Kyusho points. The devastating effectiveness of Kyusho is now further amplified, with aspects that can be concretely enhanced and trained, regardless of external and immutable aspects such as our opponent's 'sensitivity' to Kyusho attacks!

Sifu Paolo Cangelosi presents a true pearl of the traditional programs of the Hung Gar style, according to the lineage of the Grand Master and hero Wong Fei Hung, considered the father of modern Hung Gar. It is the form “Loon Ying - the Shadow of the Dragon", extracted from the forms Ng Ying Kune and Sap Ying Kune. The beginning of this set involves the study of Dragon techniques, through a very sophisticated and complex system based on psychocorporal techniques, breathing, dynamic tension of the tendon and muscle fasciae, isotonic techniques flanked by emissions of guttural sounds that refer to the emotions and moods of the individual, as well as vibrations that correspond to the energetic tone of the vital organs. All this has a great association with the canons of traditional Chinese medicine and technically in its practice can be seen expressed in the form of the dragon where we will find a succession of combinations of sounds and movements that create this energetic and emotional dance in a chronological order to free the human being of his mental blockages, his physical and psychological weakness and reactivate the vital functions of the organs and viscera connected to each other. This is the main essence of this wonderful exercise that has taken its place in the most important forms of the Hung Gar style. You will surely get the most out of it by going on to study the "Tit Sin Kune" form, where you will specialize and complete this cultural technical panorama, treasure of the great studies carried out and transmitted by the great master Tit Kiu San.

A freethinker, a treasure... A freethinker, a treasure...
It is not the first time that I publicly propose myself against the profusion of laws as a dangerous nonsense. The governmental state legislative diarrhea, wanting to control every little aspect of our daily life, is making the few remaining airs of freedom unbreathable, in the few countries that proclaimed to be defenders of it.
Freedom has thus become a scarce commodity, an endangered species that the right-thinking "hyperdemocrats", cretins, are strangling.
My generation lived much freer than the current one; this is partly because when you try to protect something to the extreme you inevitably suffocate it. It is inexplicable how we have been able to survive without so much law, stupidity, linguistic gobbledygook, and multiple nonsense. Reality is something too big to be corseted in codices... You can't put gates on the field!
Normally I use this platform to share with my kind readers my personal disquisitions on this and other particulars that have ceased to alarm me and have simply entered the realm of the annoying. Consequently, every day I withdraw more and more from the worldly noise, something typical of my advanced age, yes, but especially as a defensive castle so that they don't touch me... (Now they want to forbid me to smoke on the beach!). However, on this occasion I have decided to share with you a text by a man I did not know, a writer who is now deceased, a text that PhilippeMuray wrote in 1992! when in the eyes of the most observant, especially those who, like him, lived in the USA (a country from which, as is well known, almost all the fashions and waves of thought that later reached the shores of Europe), the signs of the decadence of a system of life, in which the word freedom had a broad meaning, were already appearing.
The first thing that surprises is the topicality of the text. If one did not know the date, it could have been written in these days. The second thing is the spark and freedom with which it pronounces itself on the subject in question, something that perhaps today would be difficult, following most of the "style books" of the sum of all current American and European publishers and newspapers.
The wave of radicalism we are entering in the West is a reaction to this whole mess of politicians who have decided that sticking their finger in my pocket is no longer enough, and they spend the day trying to stick it in my eye and if I get lost in my ass. It is true that this reaction is accompanied by all the excesses typical of any swing of the pendulum in history, but if they are growing in a bulky and ostentatious way, it would be good if the offended guardians of democratic orthodoxy would make them see it, and instead of making them sanitary cordons, or building walls against them, they would see them as a "monster" that their diligent excesses and their love for prohibitions have been creating. The busybodies of the day try to impose their ideologies on us about the world and about life. No. You are not there for that, but to manage and protect freedom, the only environment in which we humans can live our lives reasonably well. And freedom is something you use! not an idea of your own that you export. To be free, is to exercise freedom, and wanting to put "everything" into legislative codices ends up killing it.
I hope you enjoy as I have enjoyed the brilliant pen of PhilippeMuray, of whom, apart from this text, I know nothing else, and I would have continued if my friend Lorenzo Castro, who knows about my free-thinking and libertarian dalliances, had not sent it to me. Thank you. France from time to time gives us singular and sharp thinkers.
Enjoy!
A freethinker, a treasure... A freethinker, a treasure...

How is it possible that no one is terrified by today's galloping legislation, by this justicialist plague that is rapidly taking over an era? How is it possible that no one is alarmed by this ever-increasing desire for laws? Ah, the law! The relentless march of our society to the rhythm of the law! None of the living can afford to ignore it. Nothing that is legislative should be alien to us. "There is a legal vacuum!" This is what is shouted from the stage. Only one voice emerges from the mush of public debates, a mournful howl, "There is a loophole to be filled!". Sixty million people mesmerized by such a spell.
Contemporary human nature has a horror of loopholes, that is to say, of areas of vagueness into which some life, and therefore disorganization, could infiltrate. Every day, a tighter and tighter turn. Projects! Charges! Study plans! Bills! Deliberations! Drafting of parliamentary decrees! All the associations applaud with their crab claws. Let's fill the legal vacuum! Let's fill it! And fill it again! And again! Let's act! Let's legislate! Holy Laws, pray for us! Teach us the salutary terror of the loophole and the perpetual desire to fill it! Support us, protect us from the precipice of the unknown! The slightest empty space outside the control of legally guaranteed neoliberalism has become an intolerable black hole. The world at the mercy of a gap in the code! Our most retrograde thoughts, our most wretched gestures are in danger of not being provided for in any paragraph, of not being protected by an appendix, of escaping the vigilance of jurisprudence. "We must fill the legal vacuum!" This is the new battle cry of the old world, rejuvenated by the removal of its first elements to the media dustbin. It has taken time and effort, tenacity, skill, good feelings and philanthropic causes to profoundly change everyone's mentality, instilling the decay of legalistic despotism. But now that it's there, it's done. The daily chronicle has become the de facto account of the Law's exciting achievements. New chapters in the history of voluntary slavery are compiled. The procedural orgy knows no bounds. Recently, in Sweden, a guy was outraged because in a Bergman film, broadcast on television, a father slapped his son. In a movie. Yes. On TV. Not in reality. Nevertheless, they considered it an immoral action. Above all: a violation of the laws in force in that country. Therefore, they took appropriate action. Prosecute. Persecute. Who doesn't approve of such a sensitive citizen? Cinema, after all, is full of acts of violence, crimes, rapes, robberies, brutality: it is necessary, urgently, to purge, to amend, to protect.
There are evenings when television - for those who watch it, in all disgust - becomes a kind of judicial fair. It is an open-air lex-shop. Everyone arrives with a draft decree. To discuss anything is to discover a new legal vacuum. The conclusion is known in advance: "There is a legal vacuum!". The dream is to banish, little by little, gently, everything that is not yet completely dead. "There is a loophole to close!". Everyone is eager to criminalize sexuality. In the United States, they are beginning to refer sex addicts to specialized clinics, as if they were sick. In France, a new law will make it possible to decree as "harassment" the slightest attempt at seduction. Another loophole filled! In Brussels, sinister strangers are preparing European regulations. All repressions are welcome, from the prohibition of smoking in public places to the suppression of certain pleasures defined as prehistoric, such as bullfighting, raw milk cheese or pigeon hunting. Any occupation that does not force us, in one way or another, to the television screen will be declared prehistoric: the Spectacle has organized enough distractions - and sufficiently expensive - that they can be declared obligatory without causing a scandal. Any other entertainment is irredentism, it is a waste of time - and of audience.
All denunciations, therefore, become acts of heroism. In the United States, a country of delusional lawyers, the leading homosexuals have invented outing, an original form of denunciation that consists of sticking everywhere photographs of guys known for their "scandalous" homosexuality with the caption "absolute faggot". They take them out because they say that secrecy harms the group. They make them confess. No more private life, therefore more hypocrisy.
Transparency! It's the dirtiest word in circulation today. Today, "outing" is gaining momentum. There are the bald people, who publish their portraits, the photos of celebrities who claim to wear toupees (sorry, "hair accessories"!) Let's unmask the toupees! Also those who wear false teeth, women with facelifts, and heart patients with pacifiers.
'The greatest misfortune for men is to have laws and a government,' wrote Chateaubriand. 'I don't think I can yet speak of a misfortune. The circus games of justice are our substituted eroticism. The new police applaud, thus legitimizing their meddling, glazing it with words like 'solidarity', 'justice', 'redistribution'. All virtuous propaganda contributes to create a devoted citizen, stupefied by the established order, stunned by the admiration of the social, determined
not to pursue any pleasure other than that which is imposed on him. Behold, the positive hero of today's totalitarian system, the ideal model of the new tyranny, the Frankenstein of the mad scientists of Welfare and Welfare, the good man who only fucks with a condom kit, who respects minorities, disapproves of moonlighting, double life, tax evasion, healthy rebellion, who finds pornography less exciting than tenderness, who can no longer judge a book or a film other than by what it is not by definition, a manifesto, who considers Céline a bastard but no longer tolerates anyone who questions Sartre and Beauvoir, who freaks out like a vampire at the crucifix if he sees a smoke ring on the horizon.
This is not a new inquisition, but a more subtle movement, moving from all sides, and it is to be feared that one will continue to insist on remembering what Flaubert and Baudelaire were victims of: their persecution, at the very least, revealed an absence of solidary continuity between the Codex and the writer, an abyss between public morality and literature. This abyss fills up more and more every day and no one volunteers for the hard work of excavation. Who will tell the story of this work? Which writer will dare to come out of the legalistic zoo to describe its turpitudes?

If we start with prohibitions, where are they going to end?
To ban or not to ban? Which sport? Mountain climbing, judo, skiing, boxing, diving, karate, cycling, muay thai, windsurfing, MMA (UFC), horseback riding, jiu jitsu, motor races, tae kwon do- which sport will we ban? Those who wish to mountain climb should do that; those who wish to dive should dive; those who wish to windsurf should windsurf, etc. Those who are brave enough to take on martial arts should do so as well.
“Most believe that, because of physical contact and its nature, martial arts are rough and dangerous and risk many injuries. However, it is important to point out that some scientific discoveries show that a higher risk of injury comes with some sports that don't even include physical contact or where that sort
of contact is strictly limited or completely prohibited.”
Most believe that, because of physical contact and its nature, martial arts are rough and dangerous and risk many injuries. However, it is important to point out that some scientific discoveries show that a higher risk of injury comes with some sports that don't even include physical contact or where that sort of contact is strictly limited or completely prohibited. Still, we shouldn't hide the fact that the variety of martial arts as well as the injuries that come with each individual sport is pretty big. Although injuries are not as common as one might expect, they include a wide array- from those that are banal to those that have a deadly outcome. This is why we are daily witnesses of politicians, sports journalists, doctors, sociologists, some religious communities or sports pedagogists who are asking for a prohibition of a certain martial arts sport.
Sports medicine and sports science are a fast-developing and relatively new area in science and medicine. Of course, there is a growing need of further research on sports medicine and science in the area of martial arts. The need is bigger in some sports, especially those that are physically and psychologically more demanding and show a challenge in problem solving such as the risk of blood-transferable diseases, a rapid decrease in weight, frequent head and extremity injuries, stress management, and the safety of the sport for women and children. Martial arts can be defined as contact sports where two individual fighters compete with one another thanks to martial techniques that have previously been given with a set of rules. They are practiced by people of different age groups for various reasons, e.g. to get into better shape, for the thrill and the desire to compete, health benefits or to learn self-defense techniques.
According to research conducted by Dr. L. Pieter generally about injuries in martial arts, injuries that happen to certain regions of the body show the specific techniques and rules of a given martial art discipline. For example, the upper extremities are more frequently injured in judo, the face and head in boxing and karate, whereas the lower extremities are more often injured in tae kwon do. According to Dr. Pieter, the activities that are most often the reason of injury include leg kicks or throwing in judo, fist punches in boxing or karate, and round kicks in tae kwon do. The types and frequency of injury in boxing are described in the US Olympic Training Centre (1981-1982) and include: the head and the face (20.6%), upper extremities (32.9%), back injuries (6.9%), brain injuries (6.5%), spinal cord and the brachial plexus (5.1%), check injuries (3.8%), kidney injuries (0.2%).
“To ban- but which sport? Mountain climbing, judo, skiing, boxing, diving, karate, cycling, muay thai, windsurfing, MMA (UFC), horseback riding, jiu jitsu, motor races, tae kwon do- which sport should we ban?”
Should Rough Martial Arts Be Prohibited? Should Rough Martial Arts Be Prohibited?
Should Rough Martial Arts Be Prohibited? Should Rough Martial Arts Be Prohibited?
According to another research published by A. Zazryn, R. Cameron and P. McCroy, over 70% of injuries happen to the head, and almost half of all injuries that happen to this body area relate to concussions (47%). Other head injuries refer to the eyebrow (19%) and nose (19%). Altogether, the most common injury, according to this research, is the concussion (33%) followed by open-wound injuries/lacerations/cuts (29%) and fractures (19%). This research also shows us that boxing injuries are less frequent than with other contact and non-contact sports. Also, acute injuries that happen during training are less frequent and less serious than during competition (A. Zazryn, 2006). The frequency of death or a serious injury in boxing comes to a ratio of 1.3:10000 boxers which is less than half in comparison to American football. The frequency and severity of injuries in karate have been researched by R. Arizza and M. Leyes after some rules have been changed in 2002. Their research was conducted in 2005 and it included karate injuries on 3 major competitions (World Karate Championship) where 1785 battles took place. The injuries were classified into 3 levels: heavy, intermediate and minor injuries.
“This research also shows us that boxing injuries are less frequent than with other contact and non-contact sports.”
Because of its characteristics and because it includes a direct clash between two opponents, judo is marked as a harsh and dangerous sport. The reality is actually quite different and judo is classified in the category of sport where injuries are not so common (research conducted by G.Birrer and K. Halbrook, 1988). Thanks to outstanding physical preparations done by judo practitioners, the number of their injuries is lowered to a minimum. Those injuries that do happen are mostly done during training (R. Souza, 2006). This confirms the fact that it is crucial to do a thorough warm up in order to prevent injuries during the course of training or competition (C. Soligard, 2008). So, good physical preparation lowers the risk of injury as well as a good warm up before a fight. Only 1.34% of all judo trainees gets injured during competition (T. Frey, 2004). Still, according to many statistical indicators, the data shows a different fact, i.e. over 1050 boxers and 420 judo trainees died over the course of the last 50 years.
The basic protective equipment for most martial arts are gloves and hand wraps. Hand wraps are bandages with which one covers the fist in order to tighten the bones and prevent punching injuries. Gloves partially amortize the punch and prevent injuries such as scratches, etc. Also, safety pads, mouth guards, masks, body shields, shin and feet shields are used in some sports. Women also use breast shields. Sports competitions are overseen by several judges who are placed in the pit and who secure that the rules are being followed during the fight. Three or more judges are also placed around the pit (it is usually an odd number in order to prevent a split decision)- they also follow the fight and give score to the techniques. In order to secure a fair fight, the competitors fight in weight categories. Still, even when using protective garments, injuries can happen and, unfortunately, some of them can have grave consequences or even become fatal. If such an injury occurs, it shouldn't be kept quiet or banalized, i.e. act like it didn't happen or simply say "it happens”. Such injuries must be talked about and do everything possible to minimize them.
“Although some world organizations don't want to publicly speak about the number of severely injured or deceased sportsmen, many instructors, trainers, trainees and martial arts masters don't negate this fact, but they actually speak about it publicly.”
“Some religious leaders want to ban certain martial arts disciplines or sports because they find the influence of some Eastern religions or philosophies to be harmful, such as Buddhism, Zenism, Taoism, Shintoism, etc. They think that this could protect some religious beliefs or principles.”
Heavy and Fatal Injuries are Tabu
It is an old belief that martial arts practicing brings a high risk of injuries. Many Chinese, but also foreign historians brought out a fact that many monks who travelled to the Shaolin Temple stayed there for life because, according to a legend, they couldn't pass the labyrinth that was the final test. Also, according to some historical tales, it is believed that many Japanese martial arts trainers would say their goodbyes with their families before leaving for practice. They did that because they simply weren't sure that they would come back alive after a certain martial arts practice (e.g. kendo, ken jutsu, jiu jitsu, and later on karate and judo). So, martial arts practice was associated with many injuries and even death since those times. Because of that, it is still believed that practicing certain martial arts is extremely dangerous.
Although some world organizations don't want to publicly speak about the number of severely injured or deceased sportsmen, many instructors, trainers, trainees and martial arts masters don't negate this fact, but they actually speak about it publicly. Consequently, the media publishes data of those sportsmen who died after being severely injured during a martial arts fight. Oftentimes, after such public announcements, those who would prohibit or ban that martial arts sport publicly criticize it and give their comments.
According to them, such sports are too dangerous, too harsh and, because of their cruelty, they cannot be compared to today's other more "humane” and "modern” sports. Of course, they are wrong. It is obvious that they are either not informed and educated enough or they are purposely giving out incomplete and untruthful information.
In their opinion, injuries that are life-threatening happen only in certain martial arts, whereas they never happen in other sports or are extremely rare. But is this truly so? Many people who are in favor of certain martial arts prohibition take on skiing, cycling, horseback riding, sailing, hiking, or even mountain climbing. It is odd that they are forgetting the fact that thousands of mountain climbers died on the hills of some of the most famous mountain peaks. Their bodies are still located on some of those hills. Also, many haven't returned thanks to frostbite. However, you never heard that anyone would like to ban mountain climbing, which is the case with martial arts.
Why haven't they asked how many sportsmen were killed during car or motor races? How many people died in cycling or horseback riding races? How many sportsmen died in numerous winter sports (e.g. skiing, sledging, bob races, etc.)? How many of them have died while diving, sailing or windsurfing? Have they ever heard of paragliding? What happens in other dangerous sports? Many of them which were previously considered extreme sports are now included in the Olympic Games and no ones even thinks about banning them. If that is the case, why to some sports journalists often speak about banning certain martial arts? Why wouldn't this be the case with other "dangerous” sports?
“Deadly injuries in martial arts exist and they should be talked about, but banning a martial arts because of that is not the solution.”
We certainly shouldn't hide the information about fatal injuries that were caused by training or sports fights in certain martial arts. Deadly injuries in martial arts exist and they should be talked about, but banning a martial arts because of that is not the solution. Moreover, which martial arts should specifically be banned? Because if we start banning the question is when will they be stopped? Those who would ban boxing, judo, muay thai, MMA (UFC) today will probably want to ban karate, tae kwon do, kung fu, jiu jitsu, kick boxing, or even thai chi tomorrow. All because they are, allegedly, dangerous sports. We also must point out the fact that the martial arts community very rarely talks about deadly injuries or trainees that were fatally-wounded. Many consider this to be "tabu” about which they simply do not wish to comment on or purposely avoid it. This is why everyone heard about famous martial arts masters simply because everyone is always talking about them. However, only the families and friends remember those that have perished and they talk of and remember them.
Should Rough Martial Arts Be Prohibited? Should Rough Martial Arts Be Prohibited?
Still, there are those martial arts experts (certain instructors, masters, trainers, sports journalists, etc.) who "research” such cases. They write down those cases of fatally-wounded sportsmen, ask about them and keep records, i.e. statistical data about them as well as the persons that trained and were killed during training, and other details. According to some statistical data from 1890 to 2007, 923 boxers were killed. According to some data from 1725 until today, as many as 2036 boxers died after severe-deadly injuries that they received in the ring. One of the researchers, statisticians and martial arts fan was the American Chinese boxing master Robert W. Smith who handed his data in a form of a document to all interested sports journalists and martial arts experts in 1994. There were also those who commented on that data with the words "Why does a Chinese boxing master collect data and keep record about fatally-wounded boxers? What are his motives?”
They Don't Understand
They do not understand that all of those deceased sportsmen were our friends in sport, our co-fighters and that we are all a part of a large community that loves and takes up martial arts. They find it unusual why certain professionals and someone who lives in Croatia asks about a deceased Japanese boy who was a judo fighter. They do not understand that, behind those statistics and statistical numbers are people. People with their life stories, their families, persons who had their wishes and ambitions, persons whose names should be remembered. Why? That every person who had the courage to step into the ring or fighting pit and gave everything he had during the fight in order to win can understand another person who does the same thing. Those who wiped blood after the fight. Those who felt euphoria after winning. Those who tasted the bitter taste of defeat. Only they can truly understand the effort it takes and everything that that person has given, even his life. And this is why we shouldn't forget. One of the better known researchers is Prof. Ryo Uchida who is a professor at Nagoya University in Japan. He published a statistical data that says that, in the last 30 years, 118 judo trainees have died and as many as 340 martial arts sportsmen stayed in coma.
Should Rough Martial Arts Be
Should Rough Martial Arts
Prohibited?
Be Prohibited?
“Certain ambitious politicians want to stress the importance of prohibition among their voters by saying how this will protect young people from harmful Martial Arts. We all know that prohibitions won't change anything.”
However, there are persons' names behind those numbers. A man such as an American kick boxer Dennis Munson Jr. who died while fighting in a ring in Milwaukee in 2014. In 2007, during sumo training, a 17-year old Japanese fighter Takashi Saito was beaten to death. Ten years later, in 2017, an 8-year old girl called Gazhal Yadav died during karate training in India. Their names are just a part of statistical data, as if we haven't learnt anything from their examples although we had to. In 2023 in Brazil, a 23-year old trainee called Joao Victor Penna died during a boxing match. He died three days after he was knocked out. Penna fought for a prize of 18.50 dollars. These are all people, not just numbers. People from which we need to learn lessons in order to prevent future incidents. We need to learn from potential mistakes, and not just ask for a prohibition of certain martial arts sports. Those who seek such bans do not understand the motives or those young people who wanted to keep training martial arts and sports.
Certain ambitious politicians want to stress the importance of prohibition among their voters by saying how this will protect young people from harmful martial arts. We all know that prohibitions won't change anything. Some religious leaders want to ban certain martial arts disciplines or sports because they find the influence of some Eastern religions or philosophies to be harmful, such as Buddhism, Zenism, Taoism, Shintoism, etc. They think that this could protect some religious beliefs or principles. None of the martial arts practitioners ever asks about one's religious affiliation, but are strictly focused on martial arts skills and sports. Also, the symbiosis of religion and martial arts is well known. When a sports tragedy occurs and a sportsperson is deadly wounded during a fight, some sports journalists, sociologists, politicians, etc. want to point it out by talking about martial arts ban. But they really don't know or don't even care about the number of deaths that happen in other sports.
To ban- but which sport? Mountain climbing, judo, skiing, boxing, diving, karate, cycling, muay thai, windsurfing, MMA (UFC), horseback riding, jiu jitsu, motor races, tae kwon do- which sport should we ban? Those who wish to climb should climb; those who wish to dive should dive; those who want to sail should sail; who loves motor races should drive them, who wants to ski should ski. Whoever has the courage and ambition to take on martial arts should do that. Prohibitions never brought us anything good and they can be advocated only by those who do not understand that people have different personalities and affinities.

Martial Art or Martial Sport
The future is here! And it's knocking at the door of martial arts schools!
Martial arts business is being forced to reevaluate the programs they offer to the public. Tournament competition is becoming one of the key reasons why people may choose to attend a particular school. In the past, people were still considering taking martial arts lessons to protect themselves. However, with the increase in popularity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (and other similar martial sports like Sambo and Grappling), the interest in competing is becoming a new and increasing trend. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) allows individuals to compete until a relatively advanced age, including those who identify as women. Tournaments are not designed to uphold traditional standards but rather to promote the competitive aspect of martial arts. They are governed by rules, judges, referees, weight divisions, belt divisions, age groups, and other regulations. These regulations are in place to protect the athletes. In contrast to the situation on the street, these considerations do not apply in the context of martial arts and martial sports. It is therefore important to differentiate between the two.
If a school begins to promote martial sports, it will have to invest in a new sector of the school. Athletes of any age require more attention, support and time from the school and its competition team trainers. It is possible that martial sports may have positive aspects to offer to a new segment of the clientele of your school. However, if you wish to be successful in this endeavor, it would be prudent to develop a new business plan, rather than investing time and effort in a venture that may not yield the desired results.
From its “original” form to its current state as a sport, the martial arts have undergone a transformation!
It is my contention that most martial arts were originally combative in nature. However, as humanity evolved, many were modified into what are now known as “well-being” arts, with a greater focus on the technical aspects. One might consider the case of Karate, Taekwondo, or Judo. It is evident that the pursuit of points is a more enjoyable endeavor than the repeated perfection of Katas (fixed forms) and technique. However, I must respectfully disagree. Furthermore, it is evident that the demonstration of a few impressive kicks is a more effective method of attracting the attention of young people than the presentation of the long-term commitment required to attain the rank of black belt in martial arts.
As previously stated, it is debatable whether the techniques employed in combative sports would ever be applicable in a street confrontation. Competitors are not required to be concerned with techniques such as eye gouges, kicks to the groin, dangerous chokes, or neck-breaking techniques. Their primary concern is the achievement of points. The two disciplines are fundamentally distinct, both in terms of the mental approach required and the objective.
In Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the system is based on reality checks and addresses realistic obstacles that can be encountered on the street. It encourages practitioners to develop a realistic sense of how to use the techniques in relation to the size and attributes of the individual. A smaller individual must focus on the correct utilization of leverage, flexibility and mechanics, and size should not be a limiting factor.
In fact, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu does not include Katas (like in most Asian martial arts); rather, it is a system of training that enables practitioners to transition from one technique to the next. Training is conducted in pairs, with one partner applying progressively increasing resistance and pressure. In this manner, those who engage in Jiu-Jitsu can learn how to respond to situations in a variety of contexts. Furthermore, it teaches us to understand the concept of escalating to a level of justified leverage or power, while also understanding the legality of the technique used in that contest.
It is similarly important to be able to de-escalate a situation if necessary, or to control an individual. In the modern era, self-defense systems must also address how to deal with multiple attackers and how to ensure one's own safety if the opponent is armed.
Knife confrontation is becoming increasingly common. A young father recently inquired as to when his 12-year-old son should be taught how to defend himself against a knife attack. My response was that such training should commence immediately, as there is no time to waste. Just a few days ago in France, another young boy, approximately 10 years of age, was killed by a 30-plus year-old man while the man attempted to steal the young boy mobile phone. The perpetrator was armed with a knife, and at no point he hesitated to stab the boy to get the mobile phone.
This discussion is not limited to the mere teaching of self-defense techniques against knife attacks. It also encompasses the broader issue of street awareness, the utilization of tactical and strategic measures, and the necessity for young people to be aware of their surroundings and to act in a responsible manner.
During the summer months, it is not uncommon to see large numbers of young boys and girls out on the streets at night, often alone and without the supervision of adults. On occasion, individuals are unaware of their surroundings, engaged in leisure activities or social interactions on their mobile phones, and thus vulnerable to attack.
The following three categories of weaponry are of particular interest: Sticks, Knives, and Firearms
When I initiated the development of my Gracie Concepts® teaching program, I was aware of the necessity to include techniques and tactics for the effective handling of a variety of weapons, including sticks (such as chains or baseball bats), knives (any instrument that could be used to inflict a cutting or stabbing injury) and of course different firearms.
“When I initiated the development of my Gracie Concepts® teaching program, I was aware of the necessity to include techniques and tactics for the effective handling of a variety of weapons.”
“Some individuals adhere to a romanticized notion of traditional teaching methods, espousing the belief that it is imperative to safeguard the “grandmaster” style of instruction. However, in contrast, they fail to recognize that contemporary practitioners have diverse needs that require more than the grandmaster's guidance to be met.”
My primary objective was not to produce the next BJJ or grappling champion, even if our school had numerous MMA, grappling, and BJJ top athletes. Gracie JiuJitsu offers a distinct approach to addressing these scenarios. My background providing training to law enforcement and military personnel has provided me with a unique perspective on the practical application of the techniques and strategies I have learned in the field.
I have integrated these insights into the training of our civilian members, ensuring that the knowledge and expertise gained in real-world situations are effectively transferred to the training environment.
“In Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the system is based on reality checks and addresses realistic obstacles that can be encountered on the street.”
Those who train in a system that places a strong emphasis on grappling techniques, such as Jiu-Jitsu, should prioritize learning techniques with weapons before engaging in any other form of training. I disagree with the assertion that one can only learn how to defend against a knife if one is unaware of the potential uses of a knife by a male or female assailant. It is first necessary to gain an understanding of the knife. It is first necessary to gain knowledge before one can consider how to defend oneself against it.
I recall the early days of BJJ in Europe during the 1990s, when practitioners of Wing Tsun/Wing Chun developed a system of “anti-grappling” to fight grapplers. In the subsequent years, the WT/WC community became one of the most enthusiastic supporters and followers of the BJJ system. A cursory examination of the current landscape reveals that most prominent WT/WC instructors possess a profound understanding of BJJ (or Sambo, Judo, or other grappling techniques).
The process is ongoing and without end!
It is important to remember that regardless of the martial art system one teaches and one's own expertise, the “creator” of that system was also a (not perfect, all knowing) human being. It is possible that the individual in question possessed a particular aptitude or exceptional insight yet remained a typical human being. It is imperative that we strive to be the optimal representation of ourselves. It is advisable to invest in one's own development and to resist the temptation to be guided by one's ego. For example, if one had chosen to become a doctor, one would not cease one's efforts after merely attaining the requisite qualifications. One would then progress and continue to learn new methods of healing people with the more modern applications and techniques.
“It is important to remember that regardless of the martial art system one teaches and one's own expertise, the “creator” of that system was also a (not perfect, all knowing) human being. It is possible that the individual in question possessed a particular aptitude or exceptional insight yet remained a typical human being. It is imperative that we strive to be the optimal representation of ourselves. It is advisable to invest in one's own development and to resist the temptation to be guided by one's ego.”
It is therefore questionable why an individual will choose to teach martial arts if they believe themselves to be infallible. This approach would also be ineffective in combative sports. Regardless of the chosen teaching path, the most crucial element that has guided me throughout my life is the pursuit of continuous learning and advancement. I am continually engaged in self-reflection, questioning why I am teaching today and how I did it in the past. There are always minor yet significant alterations, which my students appreciate.
It is therefore incumbent upon the teacher to implement changes, when necessary, to ensure that their students receive the best possible instruction. Some individuals adhere to a romanticized notion of traditional teaching methods, espousing the belief that it is imperative to safeguard the “grandmaster” style of instruction. However, in contrast, they fail to recognize that contemporary practitioners have diverse needs that require more than the grandmaster's guidance to be met.
The efficacy of one's techniques will not be enhanced using Japanese, Chinese, or Korean nomenclature. The optimal approach to enhancing one's technique is to consistently execute it correctly and to develop more effective pedagogical strategies for subsequent generations. Furthermore, the efficacy of your technique will not be enhanced by incorporating (let’s say) Wing Chun or Jiu-Jitsu techniques into your Hapkido or Karate curriculum. This will inevitably result in a diversion of resources from the students' training in Hapkido or Karate.
There is some news about our partner school in Schwäbisch-Gmünd!
Arthur Schmidt and his MMA team Minotauros are well-known grappling athletes. Coach Arthur has also been active in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for many years and has been part of the Gracie Concepts® family for some time now. As part of a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu seminar, the team of Arthur Schmidt and Michele Lucardi was tested by me and my assistants and then regraduated. It is pleasing to see that this team also meets our standards in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and that Arthur, and his team are highly committed. I look forward to working with Arthur Schmidt and his team - thank you very much!

Aggression and defense management: Preventive training for emergencies
Introduction
In a world that is constantly changing, understanding and managing aggression is an essential part of personal safety. Aggression is a natural human behavior that manifests itself in various forms and situations. The ability to recognize, respond to and de-escalate such situations is invaluable for both security officers and private individuals.
In the world of security and law enforcement, such situations are not uncommon. An experienced officer knows that the key to de-escalation lies in understanding the triggers and dynamics of aggression. Aggressive behavior is often a symptom of deeper conflicts or fears. Professional management of these behaviors requires not only physical presence, but also psychological sensitivity.
What is aggression?
Aggression can manifest itself in various forms, from verbal threats to physical violence. It is often the result of frustration, fear or other strong emotions. A classic example from the everyday life of a security officer: an angry passenger at the airport whose flight has been canceled begins to protest loudly and threatens the staff. In this case, the ability to remain calm and determined is crucial to de-escalate the situation.
Preventive measures
Preventative training is the key to avoiding escalating situations. This training includes various techniques:
1. Situational awareness: recognizing potential dangers and aggressive behaviors in advance. For example, a police officer notices a person loitering nervously near a building. By approaching this person, an escalation can often be prevented.
2. Communication: Clear and specific communication can work wonders. A calm but firm voice can help to reduce aggression. For example, a bouncer in a club who politely but firmly points out compliance with the rules can nip many conflicts in the bud.
3. Body language: The use of nonverbal communication, such as open and relaxed posture, can have a deescalating effect. Imagine a security guard approaching an angry customer with his arms crossed and a stern expression on his face - this could aggravate the situation. An open attitude, on the other hand, signals a willingness to cooperate.
Practical examples from everyday working life
Security forces and law enforcement officers are often confronted with aggressive situations. Here are some real-life examples and how they were dealt with:
Train station security: an aggressive passenger without a valid ticket starts swearing at the train staff and threatens to become violent. The situation was defused by trained behavior, such as keeping a safe distance and calmly addressing the person with clear instructions. The passenger was eventually escorted out of the station without the use of force.
Public events:
At a large concert, a group of drunken visitors begins to harass other guests. The security forces on site work as a team to quickly and effectively isolate the group and remove them from the event area. Coordinated action and clear communication ensure the safety of other guests.
-Traffic control: A driver who is stopped for speeding reacts aggressively and verbally threatens the police officer. Through training in de-escalating communication and insisting on professional behavior, the officer manages to calm the driver and keep the situation under control.
Airport security forces:
This is where people from different cultures and with different expectations meet, often under stress or time pressure. A misunderstood word or an unconscious gesture can trigger aggression. A security officer who is able to recognize such situations at an early stage and defuse them through targeted communication and de-escalating measures not only protects himself, but also the general public.
Conclusion
The management of aggression and the implementation of preventive measures are essential components of security work. Through targeted training and the use of deescalation techniques, many dangerous situations can be avoided or at least controlled. Everyone from security professionals to the average citizen can benefit from these skills to act safely and confidently in stressful and potentially dangerous situations.
"In a world that is constantly changing, understanding and managing of aggression is an essential part of personal safety."
Professional behavior management
Professional
Aggressive behavior is often caused by stress, fear or misunderstandings. An experienced security professional knows that early recognition of signs such as raised voices, threatening body language or nervous movements is crucial. These are the first alarm signals that indicate a potentially dangerous situation.
Aggression management
In everyday life and especially in professions that require a high degree of safety and order, managing aggression is a key skill. Managing aggression means developing and applying strategies to recognize, control and de-escalate aggressive behaviour. This can be achieved through verbal communication, physical techniques or preventative measures. Professional aggression management also means having your own emotions under control. It is about keeping a clear head in stressful situations and not reacting aggressively yourself. This self-control can be trained and is an essential part of effective self-defense.
Systemic aggression management
Systemic aggression management is about understanding the causes of aggression in a wider context. It takes into account not only individual behavior, but also the environmental factors and social dynamics that can promote aggression. Security forces learn to recognize these systemic relationships and take preventive measures to defuse potential conflict situations.
Anti-aggression management
Anti-aggression management focuses on avoiding and minimizing aggression through targeted measures. This includes training in conflict resolution, stress management and communication techniques. Preventive action can avoid escalation and create a safer environment.
Street Combatives: A concept for self-protection in high-stress situations
Street Combatives is a practice-oriented concept that aims to teach effective selfprotection techniques for use in high-stress situations. This system is based on realistic scenarios and combines simple but effective techniques that can be used reliably even under extreme stress. The methods are designed to utilize and strengthen the body's natural reflexes to act quickly and decisively in dangerous situations.
Decisive action and control in the face of aggression and violence
A decisive approach and control over one's own reaction are crucial when dealing with current aggression and violence. Security forces must learn to take clear, confident and controlled actions in order to dominate and de-escalate the situation. This requires not only physical skills, but also mental strength and a deep understanding of human behavior.
Asymmetric attacks: protection and increasing self-protection skills
Asymmetric attacks, in which the attacker acts unexpectedly and with disproportionate force, pose a particular challenge. Here it is important to learn special techniques aimed at reacting quickly and effectively to unexpected attacks.
Through regular training and exposure to various attack scenarios, security forces can security forces can significantly increase their selfprotection skills and respond better to unforeseen threats.
"In the world of security forces and law enforcement, dealing with aggression and violence is ubiquitous. These techniques and concepts not only provide tools for effective self-defense, but also for prevention and de-escalation, to deal with dangerous situations safely and professionally."
Preventive measures for self-protection: training for emergencies
Self-defense doesn't just start when an attack occurs. It starts much earlier with preventative measures that minimize the risk of an attack. Preventive measures in self-protection training are crucial for recognizing and avoiding dangers before they escalate. These strategies are not only relevant for security officers and law enforcement officers, but also for the everyday life of any person who wants to feel safe.
The importance of preventive measures
Preventative measures in self-protection training include techniques and behaviors that help to avoid or defuse dangerous situations. These measures are invaluable as they not only prevent physical confrontation, but also strengthen mental well-being. The goal is to be confident, alert and prepared.
Situational awareness: The first line of defense
Situational awareness is one of the most important skills in preventive self-protection. It means always being aware of your surroundings and potential dangers. Security officers and law enforcement officers use this skill to recognize risks early and take appropriate action.
Real-life example:
A security officer in a shopping center notices a group of people behaving suspiciously. Thanks to his trained situational awareness, he recognizes signs of possible shoplifting. He informs his colleagues and positions himself strategically to monitor the situation and, if necessary, intervene before an actual theft occurs.
Body language and demeanor
The way you move and behave can deter potential attackers. A confident demeanor signals that you are aware of your surroundings and ready to defend yourself.
Conclusion
Overall, understanding and professionally managing aggression is essential to the work of security, law enforcement and judicial officers. It not only protects their own lives, but also contributes significantly to the safety and well-being of society. Every deployment, every confrontation offers the opportunity to avoid escalation through intelligent action and empathic understanding and thus make a positive contribution.
"In the world of self-defense and self-protection, managing aggression is an art. of aggression is an art. It requires not only physical skills, but also mental strength and emotional intelligence. Those who are able to recognize conflicts at an early stage and defuse them by acting intelligently, protect themselves and others."
The knife is the most dangerous and feared weapon in a fight. Very easy to get and very often deadly. The Oliva Combat System defense program against a knife attack involves concrete action, efficiency and perfection. It is a total fight, based on simple knife and non-knife fighting mechanisms. A street fight against an armed person requires first of all psychological management and then technical mastery, which can only be obtained through special training. Only in this way can we deal with fear, to give success to the concepts of fighting, resistance and victory. The system could be described as the civilian version of the C.A.T. system ("Cobra Assault Tactics") taught to the Special Forces, which is characterized by extremely direct, aggressive, simple, fast and very effective mechanisms. Through specific high-level tactical-technical training, certain skills are taught that, along with basic training, allow survival in a confrontation with or without a weapon. These skills include: Sensitivity, Reaction, Explosiveness, Body Coordination, Speed, Timing and of course the most important of all, Killer Instinct. "The essential thing is to be as concrete, efficient and perfect as possible. This is the only way we have a chance of defense". This is the objective of the Oliva Combat System. 40 min.

Every generation has its heroes. But some heroes outlast many generations. Wong Fei Hung is one such hero, a hero of our Kung Fu family tree and a folk hero, in whose honor there has been a muesum in Foshan, southern China, for decades.
As guests of honor, we were welcomed by numerous onlookers and of course demonstrated our Kung Fu. Thunderous applause and countless photo sessions accompanied us throughout. A wonderful, successful Kung Fu day!
The discussions about the planned film with me also continued - more about that another time

"... Fifty canarians of the best swimmers to be found, each equipped with a cabarco and a dragon tree tablachina". In this way, indigenous Canary Islanders were used as elite troops in the assault on Tenochtitlan, Mexico, early 16th century. This new work of the Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario, focuses on the traditional Tolete, its characteristic grip with one hand in the center, the guards (right, troquiada, ...) and the basic techniques (correderas, vueltas, lazos, molinetes...), as well as its application in combat combinations. In the traditional Tolete canario the objective is to break the armed hand of the attacker and to finish off in a forceful way with a definitive blow. There are no controls or reductions. The opposite happens with its police application, where the proportionality to the aggression and even the aggressor's own integrity is protected by law. The military application does not have these limitations, but its use as defense by the military police does. The characteristics of the Tactical Operational Tolete for the operations of civilian and military police forces favor these aspects as it is an extremely versatile implement. Its dimensions and central grip with effective wrist turns facilitate rapid and repeated striking movements to the armed hand, enabling both its cancellation and the consequent control for an effective reduction, thus preserving the life of the agent and eliminating the threat with the minimum of injury.

“All Things Shall Pass” (part 2)
We stumbled upon a hidden gem nestled in the northern reaches of Luxembourg, bordering Belgium—a sprawling country estate steeped in over a century of history. This humble abode of antiquity, lacked any plans or blueprints, testament to its age.
Once a sanctuary for Catholic retreats, the house had accommodated scores of worshippers, with its barn transformed into a humble chapel adorned with living quarters. As I gazed upon the weathered facade, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of work required to restore it.
Yet, amidst the daunting task of renovation, I saw that it had the proper potential to transform it into a live-in Hwa Rang Do training center. My fellow students who had joined me in the house-hunting expedition, were captivated by its potential. One expressed eagerness, exclaiming, "I could sink my teeth into this project," while the other remarking, "I feel good energy here."
What to do? One option tempts with a luxurious bachelor pad, while the other demands living among my students, forfeiting privacy. Once more, my self-centered desires clashed with the call of my purpose. Yet, as God would have it, the bachelor pad fell through, leaving me with only the old weathered, humble Catholic retreat.
Initially met with skepticism, I decided to take a leap of faith and submitted an offer for the property. However, our bid was promptly rejected. Undeterred, I penned a heartfelt email, pouring out my story and expressing my vision for the house—to transform it into a haven for learning and growth.
To our astonishment, the owners reconsidered and accepted our offer. Thus began our journey of transformation.
Since January, we have been tirelessly engaged in the renovation process, breathing new life into the old walls. It's a poignant coincidence that our endeavors commenced almost exactly seven years from the day I set foot in Luxembourg—a symbolic milestone as seven being the perfect number and the number for Christ.
From a young age, my mother regaled me with tales of my father's tenacity and resilience. Departing from his home in his early teens, he made a solemn vow to return only after achieving success—a home filled with seven children in impoverished circumstances. Together, they moved into a modest dwelling, where it doubled as a training hall.
As night fell on their humble abode, the scurrying of rats served as a reminder of their harsh living conditions. Undeterred, my father turned to his martial arts skills, honing his craft through the rhythmic motion of knife throwing—an ingenious solution to an age-old problem.
These stories, intertwined with my fervent passion for Hwa Rang Do, ignited within me a dream—a vision of a sanctuary where I could nurture and mentor the future Hwarang Knights. It's more than just a dream; it's a calling—a sacred path of discipleship, where tradition and enlightenment converge to shape the warriors/scholars of tomorrow.
At each juncture and chapter of my life, the contours of my dream evolved, shifting and morphing into different iterations of the vision. Yet, never in my wildest imaginings did I conceive that it would manifest in this manner—a weathered old house nestled within the tranquil borders of Luxembourg. As I stand amidst the timeworn walls, tracing the threads of destiny that led me here, I am awestruck by the serendipity of it all. In this unexpected corner of the world, amidst the rolling hills and whispering winds, my dream takes root—an ancient seed finding fertile soil in the unlikeliest of places.
In hindsight, I realize that it wasn't just the culmination of the past seven years, but rather the intricate tapestry woven from nearly six decades of life experiences. Every twist and turn, every triumph and setback, played a crucial role in shaping the path that led me to this present moment. It's a profound realization—that every event, whether joyous or challenging, was indispensable in sculpting the essence of my being.
For in the grand scheme of existence, all things are transient, fleeting like shadows in the passing light. Yet amidst the ebb and flow of life, there remains one constant, one eternal truth—God. Immutable and everlasting, His presence transcends the temporal, anchoring us in the infinite expanse of His love and grace. In this truth, I find solace, knowing that amidst life's ever-changing landscape, His divine presence remains unwavering, guiding us through the currents of time and eternity.
In God, I find my refuge, my cornerstone, and my foundation—the bedrock upon which I build my life and surrender all that I am. Each day brings its own set of trials and tribulations, and even now, as I pen these words, I wrestle with God in what he has laid before me. Frustrations abound, and challenges loom large on the horizon. Yet, in the midst of uncertainty, God remains steadfast, providing precisely what I need, though often not what I desire.
My struggles and discontent stem from the realization that His plans diverge from my own. But in this divergence lies the essence of faith—a trust forged in the crucible of adversity. For every obstacle, every hurdle, serves as a test of my steadfast belief in His providence. And though I may wrestle with God, I know that in the struggle, He strengthens me, molding me into a vessel of His divine will.
During my birthday celebration, I found myself yearning to prolong the joy and serenity of that moment—an oasis of respite amidst the tumult of my daily struggles. It was a glimpse into the realization of the dream that God had bestowed upon me. Yet, as I clung to the fleeting euphoria, I was confronted with the sobering truth of impermanence.
In the quiet contemplation that followed, I was reminded of the teachings of my Master, Jesus Christ, that I should not seek the things of the world but the things of the spirit. All things shall pass no matter good or bad and all things must pass in order for God’s glory to be fulfilled.
Prof. Phosawat Saengsawan and the rebirth of ancient Muay
In 1995 the Office of National Culture Commission of Thailand (a department of the Ministry of Education) selected a panel of experts to create a traditional Muay Thai syllabus that could help to preserve the ancient styles of Siamese barehanded fighting. This panel included the following Masters:
1. Yodtong Sriwaralak
2. Somphon Saengchai
3. Phosawat Saengsawang
4. Natchaphon Banlenpradit
5. Pajon Muengsorn
6. Jarusdet Ulit.
These great Masters were experts in various styles and aspects of the ancient and modern versions of Muay: each one possessed deep knowledge and their team work contributed decisively to the “rebirth” of the original form of Siamese unarmed combat.
I had the privilege to meet all of them: I was also tutored by some and I was also honoured to be a closed-door student of one of them, for some time. This Master was very influential for the future development of Muay Boran IMBA: his name is Phosawat Saengsawang.
At the time we met, Khru Pho (as he was known in Muay circles) was a Professor at Rajabat University: in fact, in the Muay Thai community he was known as “the Professor”, a sign of respect for his great knowledge of the traditional Siamese combat systems. When he started to write and talk about “traditional Muay” the vast majority of the other teachers were heavily involved in sport fighting and apparently had no interest in old fighting systems and techniques that could be of little or no use in the ring. Also foreigners like myself, were exclusively interested in learning the powerful techniques of professional Muay Thai and generally had no idea of the treasure of combat skills hidden in the old traditions of the Thai people. Khru Pho helped me to discover that treasure and for this I will always be grateful. His passion for the Thai Martial Arts was contagious and it pushed me to learn and spread in the West the message of traditional Muay. When I wrote my first book about Muay Boran I brought a copy to him and he was delighted. He went so far as saying that I had to pursue the project of spreading traditional Thai
Martial Arts on a global scale. He approved of the creation of IMBA and for several years he kept on giving me suggestions to structure properly the International Muay Boran Academy. In the meanwhile we kept on meeting and working together on the technical nuances of old Siamese combat systems. In each one of our training sessions he unveiled a crucial aspect of ancient Muay which would prove invaluable for my understanding of old and modern Thai fighting methods. In our private classes we covered many topics but the most important and intriguing ones were the following.
1. Muay Lak and Muay Kiao fighting. Master Phosawat started his teaching by making a clear distinction between a static way of fighting (Muay Lak) as opposed to a more agile system (Muay Kiao). The example he gave me for the first category was Muay Korat style. On the other hand, Muay Chaiya was a good example of the second system. He gave me a lot of examples of the pros and cons of both, and their possible application in all-out fighting and professional Thai Boxing. Great food for thought.
2. The ancestral Muay Ruesi style. When I asked him about ancient styles, with my surprise, he started with what he considered the oldest one, that is Muay Ruesi. The Ascetic’s Boxing, he said, was the most elevated style because it combined
fighting techniques, sorcery, ancestral rituals (spells), herbs, magic tattoos. Ruesis were the wizards of ancient times, possessors of mysterious knowledge that could be used to heal or destroy. Now that, after years of research, I know that a Ruesi (Sukatanta) is considered the patriarch of the oldest style of Muay (Muay Lopburi), I can appreciate even more Khru Pho’s words and teachings.
3. Muay Korat - Muay Lopburi- Muay Chaiya: also the 3 main regional styles of Muay were one of the core subjects of his lessons. I remember asking him more and more details about the guard positions, the specific footwork, offensive and defensive strategies of the 3 styles. He showed me all that and at the same time he clarified that, while the core principles of each style were defined and specific, the interpretations of the various masters could differ somehow. In other words, he instructed me not to think with a western mind, in order to really understand ancient Muay. For us Westerners, black is black and white is white. In the Far East something can be black and white at the same time and none is surprised by that. In retrospect, I can consider this concept as the most important teaching I received from him.
4. Nawarthawut or the way to use the nine body weapons to attack. Khru Pho was a specialist in hand techniques: he showed me so many ways to punch that I have rarely seen since then. Sometimes he asked me to combine punches
with wrestling holds and he distinguished between long and short range hand attacks, drawing those tactics from various regional styles.
5. Thai standing grappling is also known as Kod Rad Fad Wiang. When I first met Khru Pho I already had a good knowledge of neck clinching techniques. He opened my mind by teaching me a lot of never-seen-before wrestling holds that were no more in use in professional fights. Now I know that this standing grappling style is a part of a huge technical background known as Muay Pram. However, in 1995 Khru Pho’s teaching was clearly ahead of his time.
6. Not many people know that Muay Thai has a lot of hand trapping systems. When Master Phosawat taught me to use my elbows, he made a distinction between free elbow strikes and elbow techniques combined with hand trapping. He showed me how to check the opponent’s arms in several ways (from the inside or the outside) and then attack with
the elbow without risking to be blocked of countered. Very few teachers in Thailand possess similar trapping skills and even in this field Khru Pho was a pioneer.
7. Traditional training aka Kan Fuek Som Boran. When traditional Muay started to be presented to thai and foreign people, a lot of the information given were connected to the “ancient ways” that were compared to the modern systems. Hand binding with cotton ropes was compared to Boxing gloves, kicking the banana trees to working the heavy bag and so on. Professor Phosawat was considered the greatest expert of these traditions and he was even invited to talk about that in TV shows or as a guest speaker in instructional videos. One day he gave me a list of all the traditional games and everyday activities that teachers of old used to forge the body of Nak Muay. He told me to try and re-create these systems in my workouts, saying that I would benefit greatly from that kind of specific training. He was absolutely right.
8. Modern professional Muay Thai training. One could expect that a person so fond of traditions would not be interested in modern methodologies. In Khru Pho’s case, nothing is further from the truth. At the time I was his student he trained professional Muay Thai fighters and he applied scientific training methods to the preparation of his boxers. He insisted in the physical training of ring fighters and martial artists, as well. He was a fan of fighting fitness and he took great care of his physical conditioning. We often met at a fitness gym were he trained his cardio, calisthenics and light weight lifting. In my experience, he was one of the very few mature Masters who kept on cultivating his physical fitness. This was also a great way of “leading by example” that I appreciated a lot.
9. Mae Mai Muay Thai
10. Look Mai Muay Thai. The last two subjects (Mae Mai and Look Mai Muay Thai) represented Prof. Phosawat’s personal contribution to the technical commission’s work mentioned before. In fact, he was the one who structured this sort of “compendium” of counterattack strategies that now represents the bedrock of any Muay Boran syllabus. I had a general idea of this subject since 1993. However, meeting and being instructed in person by the absolute expert of Mae Mai and Look Mai Muay Thai was a dream coming true. Khru Pho was so kind to explain the how’s and why’s of all 30 strategies and his lessons proved priceless for my growth in the field of Traditional Muay.
Essays on the Master-Student Relationship: Phenomenology and Perception in the Understanding and Application of Kote-mawashi in Aikijujutsu
"We are a consciousness incarnated in a body endowed with motricity."
Maurice Merleau-Ponty
The choice of this theme arose from an insight during a class in which we were practicing Aikijujutsu movements, focusing on Kote-mawashi techniques. In the dojo, all the students, especially the beginners, were attentively observing every movement, gesture and explanation by Shidoshi Jordan Augusto. The technique, which at first seemed simple, turned out to be a complex interaction of perception and response, highlighting the students' different understandings and coordination when repeating the movements.
Shidoshi Jordan, with wisdom and patience, emphasized the importance of body awareness. "It's not just about the physical movement," he said, "but about how we feel and perceive our own body and the body of the opponent. Every twist, every adjustment must be made with full awareness of the impact we are making." In applying the technique, Shidoshi demonstrated how active perception and synchrony between body and mind are essential for the harmonious execution of Kote-mawashi.
For many, practicing the technique revealed previously invisible subtleties. The muscles of the forearm and wrist joints, now better understood, responded with a new, almost intuitive precision. You could feel the presence of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology in the air, an embodied and visceral understanding of perception and action. The rotation of the wrist, the controlled pressure and the response of Uke's body were no longer just mechanical movements, but a deep and silent dialog between two beings.
By the end of the class, serenity had taken over the atmosphere. Shidoshi gathered the students together to ask questions and make a final reflection. "Kote-mawashi," he said, "is not just a technique for disarming your opponent. It's a lesson in how we face challenges with compassion and awareness. In practice, we find the true essence of martial arts and, through them, a reflection of our own humanity." From this perception, that day's practice led me to draw a parallel between the learning process in traditional arts and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology.
Maurice Merleau-Ponty, a 20th century French philosopher, is known for his contributions to phenomenology and the philosophy of perception. Born in 1908 and died in 1961, his most influential work, "Phenomenology of Perception" (1945), investigates perceptual experience and its relationship with the world. Merleau-Ponty argues that perception is not simply a relationship between a subject and an object, but an embodied experience rooted in the lived world.
In addition, the philosopher wrote "The Eye and the Spirit" ("L'Œil et l'Esprit"), where he explores the relationship between the body and vision, the visible and the invisible, highlighting how the act of seeing is not merely a passive activity, but a dynamic interaction between the observer and the observed. Merleau-Ponty emphasizes that vision is an active and embodied process, in which the observer's body is deeply involved in the act of perceiving.
The constitution of meaning in human experience was his main interest, covering topics such as perception, art, politics, religion, biology, psychology, psychoanalysis, language, nature and history. Although his work "The Eye and the Spirit" focuses on the plastic arts, Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology also addresses the questioning of how our body feels, sees and communicates with the outside world, which offers a rich theoretical basis for understanding various bodily practices, including those present in the traditional arts.
Therefore, this phenomenological prism, observed from the embodied experience, can be applied to explore the theme addressed at the beginning of this article, that is, to understand Aikijujutsu, an art in which practitioners experience and understand movements such as Kote-mawashi, Kote-hineri and Kote-gaeshi, among other techniques.
These movements are not just physical techniques, but involve a deep awareness of one's own body and the body of the opponent, reflecting Merleau-Ponty's idea that perception is an experience rooted in the lived body. For the development of this article, we applied a deeper perception of Kote-mawashi, as discussed in the initial report.
"For many, practicing the technique revealed previously invisible subtleties. The muscles of the forearm and the joints of the wrist, now better understood, responded with a new, almost intuitive precision"
KOTE-MAWASHI: TECHNIQUE AND CULTURAL ASPECTS
The Kote-mawashi technique ( 小手廻し ), translated as "arm twisting", involves manipulating the opponent's arm to shift their balance and neutralize their strength. When performing this technique, the practitioner must grab the opponent's wrist and apply a gentle but firm rotation, using their own center of gravity to control the movement. This process of rotation must not be forced; on the contrary, it must be harmonious, using the opponent's energy against themselves.
From a cultural point of view, the practice of this technique symbolizes the search for balance and control not only over the opponent, but over oneself. It reflects the principle that true strength lies not in aggression, but in the ability to redirect energy effectively and compassionately, especially when movements are executed using Haragei.
The term Haragei (腹芸 ) can be translated as "the art of the belly" or "the technique of the abdomen", referring to the ability to use the center of gravity and the energy of the abdomen to guide actions and movements. In the context of martial arts, Haragei is the practice of cultivating and applying the energy of the "hara" (center of the body) to achieve maximum effectiveness with minimum effort. This practice not only improves technique, but also strengthens the mindbody connection, which is essential for executing movements such as Kote-mawashi.
By using the hara as a source of energy and balance, the practitioner can apply the twist to the opponent's arm with greater precision and control. The movement becomes more fluid and natural, reflecting a deep understanding of biomechanics and body dynamics. Haragei allows the practitioner not to rely exclusively on physical strength, but rather on a harmonious coordination between mind, body and internal energy.
KOTE-MAWASHI: PHYSIOLOGICAL, ANATOMICAL AND SENSORY UNDERSTANDING
Physiologically and anatomically, Kote-mawashi requires a detailed understanding of the joints and muscles of the arm. When applying the technique, the practitioner must be aware of the biomechanics of the opponent's wrist and elbow. Twisting the arm activates the flexor and extensor muscles of the forearm, while rotation affects ligaments and tendons. Correct execution prevents injury and maximizes control, demonstrating a deep integration of anatomical knowledge and technical skill.
The application of Kote-mawashi causes the activation of muscle and tendon reflexes in the opponent's body. The twisting of the wrist and arm stresses the flexor muscles, such as the flexor carpi radialis and flexor carpi ulnaris, and the extensor muscles, such as the extensor carpi radialis longus and extensor carpi ulnaris. This action triggers stretch reflexes, where the muscles try to resist abrupt stretching to prevent damage. Simultaneously, the Golgi tendon receptors located in the tendons detect excessive tension and can trigger a reflex relaxation of the muscles to protect the structures involved.
In addition, performing Kote-mawashi involves complex reactions from the nervous system. Through proprioceptors located in the muscles, tendons and joints, the practitioner receives continuous information about the position and movement of their body and their opponent's body. These sensory signals are processed by the central nervous system, allowing for precise and immediate adjustments in the application of the technique.
The cerebellum plays a crucial role in the coordination and precision of movements, helping to adjust the force and direction of the twist based on the sensory feedback received. The autonomic nervous system is also involved, regulating the practitioner's arousal and calm responses, which are essential for maintaining focus and effectiveness during the execution of the technique.
KOTE-MAWASHI AND PHENOMENOLOGICAL UNDERSTANDING
Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology sheds light on the teaching-learning process of Kote-mawashi, revealing that the technique is a dance of active perception and response, where the bodily interaction between Tori and Uke manifests lived experience and deep human connection. Through the phenomenological prism, we can explore how awareness of one's own body and the body of the opponent manifests during the execution of Kote-mawashi, revealing deep layers of perception and connection.
For the Tori, applying Kote-mawashi involves an intensified awareness of one's own body and of Uke's movements. The Tori must continually adjust his strength and direction, responding to the slightest signs of resistance or compliance from the Uke. This interaction is not purely mechanical, but a process of bodily, energetic and perceptual engagement. The Tori senses the Uke's energy and redirects it, using a smooth and firm rotation to throw off the opponent's balance.
Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology helps us to understand that this perception is not just visual or tactile, but an integrated experience that involves the Tori's entire being, where body and mind act in perfect synchrony. When Tori applies Kote-mawashi in a compassionate and effective way, he manifests these principles through his own corporeality. The technique becomes an expression of discipline and respect, where strength lies not in aggression, but in the ability to harmonize with the opponent.
For Uke, the experience of Kote-mawashi is equally rich in phenomenological terms. Uke feels the manipulation of his arm and responds instinctively to the stimuli applied by Tori. From this perspective, Kote-mawashi is not just an experience of being controlled, but an opportunity to realize the limits and capacities of one's own body in response to the Tori's intervention.
In Kote-mawashi, Tori must be intensely aware of his own movements and of Uke's responses. The technique involves manipulating the opponent's arm to shift his balance and neutralize his strength, using a gentle but firm rotation. This rotation process must be harmonious, using the opponent's energy against itself. Phenomenology helps us understand that the perception of Tori is an integrated experience, involving body and mind in perfect synchrony. Tori senses Uke's energy and redirects it, demonstrating a complete presence and active perception.
For Uke, the experience of Kote-mawashi is equally rich in phenomenological terms. The twisting of the wrist and arm stresses the flexor and extensor muscles, activating muscle and tendon reflexes. This process of bodily perception and involuntary response exemplifies Merleau-Ponty's idea that perception is an experience rooted in the lived body. The Uke, therefore, is not just a passive receiver, but an active participant in the dynamics of movement.
When applying Kote-mawashi, the practitioner must be attentive to the sensory responses that indicate the opponent's resistance or relaxation. This requires a keen awareness and an ability to adjust the pressure and angle of the twist in real time, demonstrating a refined attunement between mind and body. The continuous and conscious practice of this technique not only improves technical skill, but also strengthens neuromuscular integration and body perception, central elements in the philosophy of Aikijujutsu and in Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology.
Thus, through the lens of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, Kote-mawashi can be understood as more than a physical technique; it is an embodied experience that connects the practitioner to the lived world. The practice of this technique involves an active and engaged perception, where the practitioner's body is in constant dialog with the opponent's body. This act of perceiving and responding in real time exemplifies Merleau-Ponty's idea that perception is a dynamic and embodied process. Kote-mawashi therefore becomes a dance of interaction, where every movement is an expression of presence and body awareness.
Self-defense programs are very important nowadays due to the increase of crimes around the world and are more comprehensive than martial arts sports training.
The PFS program has been developed by military experts in the field of combat and high-level martial arts instructors under the supervision of its founder, Master Ahmed Al-Houli, and is now considered one of the most important combat programs in the face of real confrontations. Its practice has spread to several countries. An important program for both military and civilian personnel to protect society.
LARP and Soft Combat are spreading like wildfire and are increasingly present in medieval fairs and events associated with tourism and local festivals. Medieval fencing, in addition to its increasingly widespread presence in reproductions of ancient battles, has also become a new leisure activity and sport that is spreading around the world in dojos for children and adults, in the form of role-playing games, or preparation for actors in the increasingly frequent series framed in the Middle Ages. Because of his extensive martial experience, Avi adds veracity to the combat, conveying realism and completely unexpected approaches to the genre lovers will enjoy this video. His 6th Dan of Kendo, 5th Dan of Iaido, 5th of Jodo, his knowledge of Kenjutsu and so many other martial arts, put him in a great position to deal with the subject.

In this fourth work, Justo Dieguez, creator of the Keysi Fighting Method, focuses on the area of grabs and traps. We will see 10 technical sequences in which the grab, the trap, are the objective, although it will be treated as a consequence. At KEYSI we do not think beforehand about performing a grab, it is something that will be the consequence of a certain situation. In a risk situation, your senses connect you with your environment, you are pure instinct, auditory, visual and contact. This ability allows you to focus your concentration, recognize your surroundings and decide what actions to take. It is you with your mental capacity that makes everything a weapon, a wall, a corner, a step, etc. On the street, in a real situation, the rules don't work. With technique you are not going to achieve your goals. Technique is that bridge that will get you to the target, but it is not the target. In a risky situation, instinctive responsiveness has to prevail over technique. When you train with this mentality you know that a millisecond can be vital. You understand that you don't have the possibility to extend the time, that you can't play on your opponent's patience or ability to manipulate him. You understand that you are at a complete disadvantage, that your response must be explosive and that you have to get out of there.
