Sifu Paolo Cangelosi presents a true pearl of the traditional programs of the Hung Gar style, according to the lineage of the Grand Master and hero Wong Fei Hung, considered the father of modern Hung Gar. It is the form “Loon Ying - the Shadow of the Dragon", extracted from the forms Ng Ying Kune and Sap Ying Kune. The beginning of this set involves the study of Dragon techniques, through a very sophisticated and complex system based on psychocorporal techniques, breathing, dynamic tension of the tendon and muscle fasciae, isotonic techniques flanked by emissions of guttural sounds that refer to the emotions and moods of the individual, as well as vibrations that correspond to the energetic tone of the vital organs. All this has a great association with the canons of traditional Chinese medicine and technically in its practice can be seen expressed in the form of the dragon where we will find a succession of combinations of sounds and movements that create this energetic and emotional dance in a chronological order to free the human being of his mental blockages, his physical and psychological weakness and reactivate the vital functions of the organs and viscera connected to each other. This is the main essence of this wonderful exercise that has taken its place in the most important forms of the Hung Gar style. You will surely get the most out of it by going on to study the "Tit Sin Kune" form, where you will specialize and complete this cultural technical panorama, treasure of the great studies carried out and transmitted by the great master Tit Kiu San.

The Academy of Martial Movement, fusion of the knowledge of Kyusho Jitsu and Tuite Jitsu of M° Frisan Gianluca together with the knowledge of the Art of Movement of M° Pascut Fulvio, continues the technical progression in the training of high level martial instructors and makes available to all the universal principles hidden in the movements of internal and external martial arts, unifying them and focusing them on precision, to bring Kyusho to a new level. In this 3rd volume, we will continue with a detailed study of the pressure points of the head, exercises and technical efficiency, ways to make the force penetrate the opponent's body ... but not only that, we will understand that really “stun” an attacker can be simple and effective. Before the analysis of the pressure points, their location, the best angle to strike, rub, manipulate ... we continue with the principles of martial movement, a unique feature of our academy. The next step is to understand how the transmission of this force occurs, how to charge the “potential” blow and unload it on the opponent. Block by block, internal and external work on our body will make our body structure and alignment a sharp tool to utilize 'force multipliers' at the Kyusho points. The devastating effectiveness of Kyusho is now further amplified, with aspects that can be concretely enhanced and trained, regardless of external and immutable aspects such as our opponent's 'sensitivity' to Kyusho attacks!

Of the most important empty goals, I transit in the peace of a summer day, at last. Everything has its moment, yes, and there is nothing more ungrateful than to twist the serene nature of time, to be a syncope in the backwater, or a spirited wave on the calm surface of a lake.

When our times do not belong to us, because we yield their usufruct to others, we walk with our feet changed, our souls exhausted and our hearts cramped After the hurricane winds have passed, we contemplate the devastation with fatigue sometimes with weariness and always with relief for having survived.

In the cycles of becoming, nature imposes itself, and in the small space it leaves us, one proposes what one's loyal knowledge understands best The heat of the summer does not correspond to hectic marathons, life and death bets, or apocalyptic intensities, but to quiet solace, calm contemplation on the banks of a cool river.

We all make mistakes; life is a continuous mistake, but by doing so in our law, we give fewer occasions and arguments to the ugly vice of blaming others, those who were simply passing by at the time.

Managing our time is imperative in order to walk smoothly, without outrages, without anguish; in the end, life, made of instants, reveals its secrets to us in calm and reflection, much more than under the harassment of spurious pressures.

In the soft gliding of the smoke wisps, the wise man discovers more arcane secrets than in the heat of a rushed battle, because the bad thing about a rat race is that, even if you win, you will still be a rat...

When the mo dels are forei gn, you will ne ver be satis fi ed , b eca use embrac i ng o ur nature, is the first step to exist in a healthy and beautiful way; so always the greatest demonstration of wisdom is to emanate an incessant happiness.

Grace and gracefulness cannot be imposed, any more than art can be prefabricated with formulas or techniques It is the phlogiston of the soul that moves the spectator before a painting, a poem, or a piece of music. To try to do it with technical subterfuges is typical of those who, admiring the sublime of creation, want to imitate it without feeling... with the empty spirit of a robot, no one can be moved.

All art arises from a disturbance of the soul, which, troubled by the vicissitudes of existence, breaks and decomposes the figure, to rebuild itself through the healing balm of creation; a toast to the sun of those who in the end, and by the means chosen, do nothing but always cry out to Caesar “morituri te salutant”.

Art and life, life with Art, go hand in hand when the heart is the path an d the pa th has a h ea rt . We fulfill the st age s , we a tten d to the immediate, the urgent, but for that reason we cannot forget what is i mpo rt an t , wh at is e ssen tial . Ex ist ence, lif e , are p rimaril y s ub j ec t to themselves, all justification is later, an incessant rumor passed through the filter of our clumsy minds that were structured from our experiences, a lw ays s mall, a lw ays li mited . If we do no t li ve , wh at will we say to ourselves then in our last breath?

Advantages of T'ai Chi Ch'uan in comparison with other physical activities

T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a unique, universal and traditional Chinese martial art which leads to deep relaxation, perfect balance and harmony of the mind and the body. It is considered as of one the many styles of Chinese boxing. Today, T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a martial art which is, for many martial arts fans around the world, much more than just a boxing skill. It is a seemingly easy and dignified exercize similar to a slow dance. Performed in light and relaxing movements, it has always been attractive to many observers. The exercize itself was called in many different ways, such as "boxing with a shadow”, "movement meditation” and even "Chinese gymnastics”. However, for those who are uninformed, its names such as "supreme finite boxing” or, to be more precise, "supreme finite fist” don't reveal much.

Thousands of different books were written about the development of this exercize around the world. Many admirers value it as a physical activity and, even more so, as a part of the Chinese traditional medicine. Because of this, thousands of different books, photographs and videos exist all around the world. One might think that everything that was possible to know about T'ai Chi Ch'uan was already discovered and is known, but that is not the case.

In today's modern times, various experts and martial arts masters cannot reconcile about their viewpoints around T'ai Chi Ch'uan. Oftentimes discussions are held about some basic questions about the martial art itself. Among many questions, there are those about the meaning of the name itself, about who made up the martial art and when exactly did it appear, what is the number of the traditional schools, i.e. styles and how many of them have survived up until today.

Many historians, researchers and martial arts masters disagree about when and who came up with T'ai Chi Ch'uan. According to most experts, there are four main theories, but the question is which one is the closest to the truth.

One of the oldest known theories is the one which mentions the emperor Yu The Great who in 2205 B.C. ordered his subjects to exercize the "great dances” in order to prevent disease. Although some writings exist, there are no actual proofs that the exercizes called "great dances” correspond to today's T'ai Chi Ch'uan. This is why a much closer theory about the gradual development of today's T'ai Chi Ch'uan as a synthesis of many Chinese martial and medicinal exercizes prevails. Namely, during the T'ang dynasty (around 750 A.D.), there existed several Chinese boxing schools which grips and grasps were described in books of that era and had the same names as some parts of today's "long exercizes” of T'ai Chi Ch'uan.

However, the most popular theory speaks of the Taoist priest Chang San-Feng who was an acupuncture and martial arts master. He lived during the Yuan dynasty (1279 - 1368 A.D.) and, according to some legends, started to come up with and teach the so-called "long exercizes”. The last theory says that the exercize as we know it today came about during the Ch'ing dynasty (1736 – 1795 A.D.). Its creator was a martial arts master Wang Tsung- Yueh who collected many punches, blocks and grips and combined them into an exercize which traditionally has 108 positions. According to a legend, the number 108 has a special meaning and was taken from Zen philosophy. And so, today we have 108 positions in a Mok Jan Dong exercize and it is believed that Karate has 108 katas for that same reason.

Thanks to a gradual development of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, 5 traditional styles have emerged (in Chinese, style is called "p'ai”) and they have based their names on their creators who were martial arts masters and lived in a town called Chen. They were: Chen p'ai, Yang p'ai, Wu (Hao p'ai), Wu p'ai and Sun p'ai. The Chen style was created by the master Yang Luchan (1799 –1872), the Wu Hao style was made by the master Wu Yuxiang (1812 – 1880), the Wu style was though of by the master Wu Quanyou (1834 – 1902) and was completed by his son Wu Jianquan (1870 – 1942). Finally, the Sun style was created by the master Sun Lutang (1861 – 1932).

Apart from these 5 most known traditional styles, some other styles need to be mentioned as they can also be considered traditional. Those are the Zhaobao p'ai and Hu Lei p'ai styles. Both originate from the Zhao Bao village which is geographically located near the town of Chen. The master Chen Quing- Ping needs to be thanked for its creation and the originality of the style lies in the fact that 2 exercizes i.e. forms are performed. The shorter one has 74 movements and the longer, traditional one has 108 movements.

The Hu Lei style or sometimes called the Hu Long Jia style consists of 74 movements and his creator, Li Jing- Ting, was Chen Quing- Ping's student. Apart from these most popular styles, there are some less known ones that need to be mentioned. For example, the Kwang Ping, Fu Zhen Song, Chen Pan Ling and the Cheng Man Ching styles which are very popular in today's Western countries and have developed out of the Yang style. The particularity of that style lies in the fact that its master Cheng, shortened the exercize to only 37 movements so that his Western students could learn it more easily.

Wanting to unite the styles, there was a Chinese group formed in 1964 which collected Chinese martial arts experts who, from all the other styles, came up with a new one and have presented it for the first time in a book called T'ai Chi Ch'uan Yun- Tong which was published in Beijing in 1964. Apart from the aforementioned styles, one needs to mention the performance of the T'ai Chi Ch'uan exercize with a spear, sword, fan or with two swords.

Opinions are divided even around the very meaning of the martial art name of T'ai Chi Ch'uan ( 太極拳 ). Some martial arts masters think that it is merely a product of a poetic expression of the Old Chinese which can also be found in a traditional exercize, for example "A crane stretching its wings”, "Hands playing the guitar”, "To catch a bird's tail” or "A rooster standing on one foot”. Since the name doesn't have a deeper meaning, others have discarded that theory. The name T'ai Chi Ch'uan in its literal translation means "supreme finite boxing”, whereas the word Ch'uan literally means "fist”. However, the meaning of the term "supreme finite” oftentimes confuses and this is exactly where the disagreement starts.

It is an expression borrowed from Chinese philosophy and notes something perfect, achieved by establishing harmony between two contrasts of yin and yang. The very symbol that T'ai Chi Ch'uan uses is an old Chinese symbol for 2 contrasts, yin and yang, i.e. a circle divided in 2 halves which are mutually intercepted. It is an old Taoist symbol which shows 2 merely incompatible forces of nature which are, at the same time, complementing one another. Such a duality is characteristic for branches of Chinese science and Chinese philosophy and makes the foundation for traditional Chinese medicine as well as a central principle of many Chinese physical exercizes and martial arts.

There is a smaller group of experts which thinks that the very name, i.e. expression has a different meaning. Namely, if we know the fact that T'ai Chi Ch'uan was created as a martial art and that its basic intention was self-defence by means of punches that were directed at specific places on the human body, the very term "supreme finite” can be interpreted as a sort of perfect "final” punch. It is known that such a punch can only be performed by superior martial arts masters who are very well acquainted with human anatomy and know where certain acupuncture points on the human body are placed.

These points were also known to the Old Chinese under the name dim mak (点脉) and in Japan by the name kyusho (急所 ). These are the terms by which they called the knowledge of attacking vital points on the human body. These spots are acupressure and acupuncture points that, under a certain angle, were to be pressed or punched in order to cause unbearable pain which can paralyze or even kill an opponent.

Although various experts cannot agree about many things regarding T'ai Chi Ch'uan, they agree about one thing- the fact that the exercize itself is very beneficial to human health. Although everyone agrees with this, it becomes a problem for those who are not adept once it needs to be scientifically explained. Namely, in order to explain the health benefits of T'ai Chi Ch'uan with scientifically- based facts, we need to have knowledge of kinesiology, kinesitherapy, physiotherapy and many other medical areas, specifically sports medicine. It is necessary to read about different research around the world and have a certain experience which will confirm that knowledge in practice. In order to do that, we must compare T'ai Chi Ch'uan to other physical activities and, by the help of scientific evidence, establish the advantages of exercizing T'ai Chi Ch'uan.

Each physical activity, as well as its scientific effects, can have its positive and negative sides to the human organism. People usually take into consideration only the advantages of taking up a physical activity because it is always a positive thing in comparison with a non-active lifestyle. The negative sides of a physical activity are usually talked about less often and lightly. Here are some of the recommendations of taking up a physical activity which many experts, i.e. kinesiologists, doctors, physiotherapists, trainers and instructors will tell you.

One of the most often recommended activities is walking or slow running at a moderate distance or walking on easier hiking trails. However, if you haven't worn quality and comfortable shoes, you will have many blisters on the way back. After longer walking or running periods, some individuals will experience pain in their feet (at the sides of the foot or oftentimes under the heel). It is possible to have pain in your shins. Because of a bad walking or running technique (a bad posture), pain in the spine can also appear. This is the reason you might experience headaches later on. Walking or running during cold weather is not recommended. Breathing in cold air during physical activity rises the body's need for oxygen which can be fatal for those with a heart condition. Exercizing during Winter can be very risky for them and a risk of a heart attack is higher even for healthy people. This explains why the number of heart attacks is larger during Winter. Long-lasting walking or running during warmer weather can also be deadly unless you've taken a refreshing beverage. By exercizing T'ai Chi Ch'uan you will avoid all the abovementioned risks.

The next physical activity which doctors will recommend to you is swimming. However, as refreshing it can be to jump into a pool and cool down your body or enjoy the water, pool water can leave unwanted effects on the skin, hair and the overall health. Pool water is safe, i.e. clean thanks to chemicals which are added to it in order to disinfect it. Most often it is chlorine. It is used to kill off bacteria and germs, to oxidate organic waste from sweat and body oils as well as to kill any algae. However, even small and admissible amounts of chlorine in pools can cause side effects and can negatively effect the body, dry out the skin, cause itchiness and a sense of tightness in the skin as well as cause potentially strong or mild eye irritations, redness or tingling in the nose and mouth. Numerous research has shown that swimming in chlorinated water can be linked to many serious health issues. It raises the risk of allergies and asthma in children and, among adults, it is connected to the development of bladder and rectal cancer as well as a higher risk of coronary heart disease.

Chlorine water can destroy the good bacteria in our digestive system and cause an array of digestive problems. Also, thanks to a bad swimming technique, spinal pain can emerge and the water that is left in the ears can cause an ear inflammation, i.e. an inflammation of the ear canal. You will avoid all of these issues if you train T'ai Chi Ch'uan instead.

Doctors shall also recommend cycling. The risks of riding a bicycle include falls and injuries and, in some urban locations, dangers of a polluted environment. If your seat is not of a good quality and not set properly, men will have problems with their genital area. Also, when riding a bike, the buttocks absorb the body's whole weight which leads to an increasing irritation of hemorrhoids. Apart from back pain, if a bicycle is not set properly, you will experience pain in the Achilles' tendon. Sometimes you might feel a tingling sensation in the fingers of the foot as well as pain in your knees. Riding during colder weather or during heat can have the same negative effects for the body as mentioned before during the walking and running activities' section. All of this can be avoided if you train T'ai Chi Ch'uan. Furthermore, doctors will recommend picking up yoga as well. By training yoga, you will have to perform many positions where your spine will have to bend and, with some individuals, this might enhance back pain. Some positions (asanas) can be dangerous and can hurt your spine, for example, a headstand. Also, yoga can be used as a good prevention among healthy people who encounter some psychological problems, i.e. depression, anxiety etc. However, if a person is psychologically ill, doing meditation with constant control and guidance is a much better solution. This is why T'ai Chi Ch'uan is more beneficial because it is a so-called meditation in movement.

Training with weights, if done irregularly, can damage your tendons, muscles and even the bones of your body. Also, training with heavy weights can oftentimes cause a hernia. Many weightlifters and professional athletes who train sports like wrestling, judo or ju jitsu suffer from hemorrhoids. This is because, when lifting weights, pressure is set to the lower part of the back which can lead to many problems causing hemorrhoids. Professional athletes often overload their heart. During this type of exercize, it can pump even up to 25 litres of blood per minute, sometimes for hours.

This causes some of the cells in the heart to die off. The effects of heavy exercize on such extreme levels (professional sports) can have a very bad effect for the whole body. A body which is exhausted by physical activity can cause irritation, rage and often mood swings. When exercize is in question, it is best to follow the motto: neither too little nor too much is good for the body (health). It has been proven that a moderate physical activity between 15 minutes and an hour done several days a week can be beneficial. This is one more reason to train T'ai Chi.

The T'ai Chi Ch'uan exercize doesn't include almost any resistance and uses minimal weight. This has proven its positive effect for the health of bones, i.e. it slows down the loss of osseous tissue and a lower number of bone fractures among women in postmenopause. People who train T'ai Chi Ch'uan are happier, more productive, have a sharper concentration and other mental functions. Their coordination and the harmony of their movements are in line, they have more successful interpersonal relations and are more adaptive to stressful changes. Apart from physical advantages of T'ai Chi, it shows a number of positive effects to the mental health because it eases mental states such as anxiety, depression, too much stress and low self-esteem.

You do not need to be strong or fast in order to perform the exercizes. This is why this activity is available to everyone, the old and the young, if you are a woman, a man, healthy or ill. By performing easy and relaxing movements, you move the muscles, joints and tendons in a natural way, as well as your internal organs and the cardiovascular system. The T'ai Chi Ch'uan skill has a positive effect on bones and joints, on the functions and the flexibility of tendons and muscles, it helps the blood and the nutrients to travel to all parts of the relaxed body, it regulates the functions of the nervous system, relieves stress, brings the inner organs back into balance, strengthening the metabolism and the immune system. T'ai Chi Ch'uan can be trained at any time of the day and can be performed anywhere, individually or in a group. The result of correct and everyday training is a general relaxation of the mind and the body.

T'ai Chi Ch'uan helps regulate blood sugar levels, strengthens the heart muscle, balances the muscle tone, improves alertness and concentration, lowers stress and stabilizes emotions, helps coordinate movement, increases balance control, corrects the posture and helps regulate breathing. It is proven that T'ai Chi Ch'uan helps people who suffer or are recovering from a stroke, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis (MS), heart attack or heart failure, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and fibromyalgia.

T'ai Chi can be of good use to older people as well as younger population, amateur or professional sportsmen because it leads to an improvement of the general physical and pshychological state. Although you won't be sweating too much, that doesn't mean that you won't be burning any calories. Sweating is not a necessary indicator of the body's straining during workout because sweating is the body's way of cooling itself. It is possible to burn a lot of calories without sweating too much.

Because of the human need to make a balance between the mind and the body, we might say that, everything starts and finishes with by training a T'ai Chi - "supreme finite”.

Let's conclude by saying that if the T'ai Chi Ch'uan exercize is not performed correctly, i.e. some movements are not done well, the exercize will be less effective for the body, but there won't be any negative side effects.

This is the basic difference - or advantage in relation to all other physical activities.

The Story behind the name CROSS-FIGHTING

Muay Thai legend Ajarn SURACHAI SIRISUTE comes to Zurich!

Today, as I was on my way home from Winterthur to Zurich, I had arranged to have lunch with my brother Demetrio, not only to spend some time together, but also to catch up with him. Even though I don't always tell him this, Demetrio is an inspiring role model for me. The exchange ranges from family to professional to martial arts-related topics. It becomes clear that there are many parallels between the different topics. It gives the impression that they are talking about everything at the same time, as similar things keep coming up as topics of conversation. During the conversation, we also addressed the so-called “new” or currently popular terms and statements, such as “...you should leave your comfort zone to get to know new things!” Demetrio then countered that there was no reason for him to leave his comfort zone, as he could expand it instead. This statement gave me another WOW and AHA effect. I fully share my brother's opinion that it is not necessary to leave your comfort zone, but that expanding it can be a more promising strategy.

Less is more... but when do we need more?

The maxim “less is more” can be seen as a kind of antithesis to the principle of constant expansion that prevails in our society. In this context, the question arises as to when we should speak of “more” and when “more” should be considered necessary.

In Madrid, I had the privilege of meeting some people through my then JKD/Kali teacher Sifu Chema (Jose Maria Fraguas) who influenced my martial arts career in a positive way. This has led to the results I have today. I am indebted to all my teachers. At the time I met Sifu Chema, he was working as an editor for the newspaper CINTURON NEGRO (English edition of BUDO International). In my opinion, there is no other martial arts magazine in Europe, even to this day, that has a comparable professional and comprehensive format. This is not surprising, as the editor is none other than our friend Alfredo Tucci, whom we all know and appreciate very well as readers of BUDO International.

However, about ten years passed before I got to know Tucci personally, thanks to a mutual acquaintance, the Kajukenbo grandmaster Angel Garcia Soldado from Madrid. The occasion was ajoint international martial arts event where he would present his Kajukenbo method and we would present our Vacirca Jiu-Jitsu; this was in 1995 in London, England, where no less than 300 people took part and therefore four different mat surfaces were used for teaching.

Sifu Chema had set himself ambitious goals, particularly about the quality of his teaching. To this end, he invited renowned guest teachers from the USA to teach at his “Instituto Kali-Jun Fan”. In fact, most of the seminars were only held for members of the Instituto Kali-Jun Fan. Just like in the good old days, behind closed doors.

Sifu Chema also used these visits to write some of the most outstanding articles and interviews on Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali, Muay Thai etc. for BUDO International. To his master and Bruce Lee master student, Guro/Sifu Dan Inosanto, and to the rest of the “Inosanto Community”, Sifu Chema was a true expert in communication, promoting it internationally.

When I met Sifu Chema, I was looking for more knowledge that I couldn't find at home. Switzerland was in a “comalike” state as far as the martial arts and combat sports scene was concerned. My Wing Chun master at the time, Sifu Carlos Perez, had even left Switzerland for a while in the hope of making better progress in Italy. Not much new came to Switzerland, but things were very different in the USA. A lot was heard from Germany about the Wing Tsun organization that Grandmaster K. Kernspecht had founded. As far as I know, he also brought the first Escrima seminars (Filipino weapon fighting) to Europe, with the help of Grandmaster René Latosa from Stockton, California, among others.

Madrid, the city of my Martial Arts...

My mother came to Switzerland from Madrid over 60 years ago to be able to develop as a person and a woman. The fascist General Franco regime was still in power in Spain, and it was difficult to imagine a future there, especially for those who did not go along with the regime and even actively resisted it.

She was always very hardworking and willing to work hard to achieve something better for her family and herself. One day she met a Swiss family in Madrid who later took her to Zurich as a housemaid. In her new home, she met my father, who had come to Zurich from Sicily at the same time, initially to visit his older sister. However, she soon left Switzerland again to try her luck in North Africa, but my father, on the other hand, not only started his family, but integrated so well that he was able to realize his desire to become self-employed and became a successful businessman.

We went to my mother's hometown of Madrid every two years until my thirteenth birthday, because our parents had agreed that we would go to Sicily one year during the five-week summer vacation and then back to Madrid the next year. The journey took place by car; it was two thousand kilometers back then, and the trip took two full days. In the spring and fall, I visited my grandmother Maria in Madrid by plane. For me, Madrid, and of course Spain, became the country where I would have loved to build my future, which, funnily enough, was Zurich for my mother and has remained so to this day. If you ask her where her home is, she always answers: “Here in Switzerland!”

From the age of 14, I was allowed to choose where I wanted to spend my summer vacation. Then I started my apprenticeship, where my employer only gave me a maximum of two weeks at a time. So it was clear to me that I would rather go to my grandmother Maria in Madrid than do anything else.

My grandmother had a very strong character; in my opinion, all Marias have this in common! But we children loved her more than anything. I don't know anyone in my large Spanish family who didn't love her, even if it sometimes came to blows. She was so stubborn, and things had to be done the way she had always done them. She wasn't always open to new things. She was content with what she had. Every year when my father was there, he was the only one who could trick her by buying her a few new household appliances or taking her on our trip to Spain to see new cities and regions.

During the Franco dictatorship, she lost all her brothers in prison and went through a lot of bad things. Things only changed when she met her second husband, a high-ranking officer who served under Francisco Franco - that's how life sometimes plays with you. I can't really remember my grandfather Demetrio himself, as he died very young because of poor post-operative treatment.

When our grandmother Maria visited us in Zurich during our childhood, which my father made possible once or twice a year, we always watched the Bruce Lee films with her. With my brother Demetrio and me next to her on the big sofa, she

loved to watch the “little powerful Chinese” (as she affectionately called Bruce Lee) knocking the bad guys out with his bare and hard fists. When I later visited her in Madrid to learn Lee's Jeet Kune Do from Sifu Chema, she kept laughing and saying: “Then it was worth watching those movies with you and your brother Demetrio!”.

Like my father, she wasn't the kind of person who liked to show emotions because she didn't want to influence anyone, just like my father... My mother always said, “...they get on so well because they're both in the zodiac sign of Scorpio!” That may have been the case.

Always keep your feet on the ground!

Fraguas only had small training groups at his “Instituto Kali/Jun Fan” and was quite expensive by the standards of the time. When I contacted him, I wanted to train with him privately in the mornings as often as possible right from the start. One of the reasons for this was that I already had a clear goal in mind, namely, to implement the techniques of Jeet Kune Do (Concepts) and Filipino Kali in my small group in Zurich. Up to this point, the training in our training group consisted of techniques from Kickboxing and elements from Wing Chun Kung-Fu. Sifu Chema supported me from the very beginning and visited us himself at least twice a year in Zurich, where he personally tested our members according to the new JKD Concepts and Filipino Kali program.

The training with Sifu Chema was tough; I would rather say exceptionally intense! But there was a good reason for this: the basis (of the JKD concept) was the Muay Thai Boxing of Master (Ajarn) Chai Sirisute. Everyone at the Inosanto Academy who also learned Thai boxing from Ajarn Chai, as well as Guro Dan Inosanto himself and a few others, such as Sifu Larry Hartsell (the most famous JKD grappler), simply had a completely different basis.

In the decades that I have been involved in martial arts, there are some JKD teachers who are technically quite good, often even from the first generation, but they prefer to talk about “theories” and spend a lot of time on the (for me) unnecessary debate about whether “this or that” is “original” or “concepts”.

In my humble opinion, they simply lack a connection to reality. I didn't stop there later in

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu either, or with certain techniques I simply had to say, “No, thanks - that's really unrealistic!”. I hardly ever saw these experts sparring; well, they're all a certain age now! They'd rather spend hours explaining “Trapping” (from Wing Chun) and the thousand-and-one version of it than let you try it out in a sparring session.

In fact, in my opinion, the great Bruce Lee brought about various new training methods and aspects. For example, training with boxing claws, as is done in Western boxing. But not just “Boxing”, but also “Trapping”. Or the use of a kick shield to harden the knees and kicks. Because you had trained with Bruce Lee himself, you shouldn't think you had drunk from a better (purer) source!

In my opinion, Guro/Sifu Dan Inosanto has brought Lee's legacy to a very special point of development. Without Inosanto's incredible and tireless dedication, Jeet Kune Do would not be where it is today.

During a lesson with Sifu Chema, nobody could think about anything else. We were 100% absorbed in our training! No matter what we were working on, you could feel the intensity of the Thai Boxing training (as taught by Ajarn Chai). The training program for the first and second phase, as we called it, was short and crisp. During this time, I got to know Sifu Rick Faye and Sifu Paul Vunak, among others. Sifu Rick impressed me in Madrid not only with his enormous knowledge, but also with his relaxed way of demonstrating the techniques and principles and being able to explain them clearly; a true JKD gentleman. I not only followed Sifu Paul in Madrid, but also traveled to England and Scotland. A short time later I also visited him in Long Beach, California, when he had just returned from his assignment as an instructor with the Navy SEALs.

When I later shared my personal video footage with Vunak with other JKD colleagues, they were surprised that they had never seen it like that before. I took this as a compliment, because I had also trained enough privately with Sifu Paul so that he knew that he could also give me something more, which I also greatly appreciated. Sifu Paul then visited us at our school in Zurich in 1991 and his PFS/Progressive Fighting System was officially introduced by him in person for the first time in Switzerland.

I got to know some of the Navy SEALs that Vunak had trained back then. Among them was Sifu Frank Cucci, who also facilitated Sifu Paul's Navy SEALs assignment, and is an excellent “functional” JKD/Kali/Muay Thai expert himself. He not only spent over half of his life as a student of Guro/Sifu Dan Inosanto, but also as a master student of Ajarn Chai Sirisute and you could feel it. The SEALs loved Muay Thai, thanks to the simple and efficient techniques, as well as the intense training method to keep them fit.

So I wasn't surprised when I saw Cucci again a few years later at a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor meeting in Torrance, California, who had now also made it to black belt under the Gracie brothers Rener and Ryron.

The Master who trains the teachers!

That's how I would describe Ajarn Chai Sirisute in one sentence. A master who is guaranteed to teach the instructors something, no matter where they come from or how long they have been training. I still remember the first time I invited Ajarn Chai to Switzerland. Back then, it wasn't easy to organize seminars at all, we weren't used to that here. In the USA, on the other hand, it was a growing trend.

I also got to know the first training camps in the USA, which I had not yet experienced in Europe. Both were a good opportunity to get to know other styles and systems, to see what the neighbor was doing. In Europe, you could feel this competitive spirit more than in the USA, because there was enough space for everyone.

In my opinion, and I don't think I'm completely wrong, there was an important addition in the school of Guro Dan Inosanto (at the Kali Academy) and later Inosanto Academy in Santa Monica, namely the Muay Thai boxing of Ajarn Chai Sirisute, who came to the USA from Thailand in the 1960s with a clear mission, namely, to establish and spread Muay Thai.

Sifu Chema was an absolute offspring of Ajarn Chai and everyone I have met in the almost forty years with Ajarn Chai has taken him to their hearts from the very beginning. Ajarn Chai is exactly the teacher and mentor you could wish for. Fully focused on his training, detailoriented and intense, but always with a smile on his face and often ready for a joke. A great person and what else can I say... Even though I not only practice his Muay Thai today, but am also involved in other martial arts, he is and remains my guide in the martial arts and I have always seen him as a role model; for me, Ajarn Chai is like my father.

But who is Ajarn Surachai “Chai” Sirisute?

Surachai Sirisute was born in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 16, 1948, and began playing Thailand's national sport at the tender age of four. His father, a well-known lawyer, had a great fondness for Thai Boxing, which was passed on to Surachai at an early age. Next to the Sirisute family home was one of the best gyms, that of Ajarn Suwan, a close friend of Sirisute's father. “Ajarn Suwan and my father sometimes met,” recalls Ajarn Chai, “...just to sit together and have dinner.”; “...Ajarn Suwan then said: you know, you have a son, you should train Muay Thai with him!”. Sirisute's father took Ajarn Suwan's suggestion to heart and hung up a small punching bag for his son. “I just started to get into it,” recalls Ajarn Chai.

As a boy, Sirisute learned both Muay Thai and karate and received his black belt in Karate at the age of just twelve. It was at this age that he also started wrestling in Muay Thai. His first major fights sparked Sirisute's interest, and he began to train every day after school to be better prepared for the next fight. Training became a habit and if he missed a day, he felt a void. Training for himself turned into teaching others.

Sirisute remembers how it all began in California: “The first time I started teaching, it was in a small Shotokan Karate studio in Santa Monica.” Soon he was teaching at several colleges and YMCAs, developing his (Chai-style) teaching method as his Muay Thai classes filled up. Ajarn Chai teaches according to the principle of “one step at a time”, and he placed great emphasis on this when teaching his passion: “You teach the student to read A-B-C-D-E-F.... and that's how it is in martial arts too!”.

Sirisute also draws on his own love of competitive sports when teaching other Muay Thai fighters: “Assuming you want to be a fighter, you must go for it and train like a fighter! You can be a great fighter; anyone can be a great fighter!” Ajarn Chai explains.

Sirisute continues: “Simply put, anyone can become a great fighter if he (or she) puts in the time, training and heart and soul that the sport deserves! The same goes for teaching Muay Thai. Sirisute credits his father and uncle for teaching him these qualities; his uncle was also a big proponent of teaching Muay Thai to foreigners; he sort of passed on the trade to him.

The great influence of his uncle led to Sirisute's clear attitude to training: “Go to different camps, to different teachers and learn different techniques!”. Ajarn Chai is also known for consciously integrating (western) Boxing into his Muay Thai curriculum. In the early 70s he tried to spread Boxing in Muay Thai in his home country, unfortunately with disappointing results: “...in 1973 I returned to Thailand and talked to some camp owners and I told them: we need to work on boxing!”, Ajarn Chai remembers, but they replied: “...hey, we have our elbows and knees, we don't care about boxing, we don't need Boxing!”. Those times have changed, also thanks to the efforts of Sirisute.

Being a Fighter and a Trainer is a double-edged sword!

Ajarn Chai admits that the transition from fighter to trainer is not always a smooth one: “I have seen many Thai fighters come to the USA without really having what it takes to become a Muay Thai trainer”. Sirisute has trained fighters, professional athletes and numerous Hollywood actors in his long career. For Ajarn Chai, Muay Thai is a holistic complement to other physical activities. In Dallas, he worked with fitness trainer Bob Ward and head coach Tom Landry to get the Dallas Cowboys football team in shape. He proudly remembers the training sessions back then: “I trained them there and made them kick on the kick shields for no longer than three minutes! The football players, including quarterback Danny White, developed a new body awareness.” Sirisute had the right understanding of their situation at that moment, because “...you learn everything about your body when you train Muay Thai!”. Although he worked with all the players on the football team, it was defensive tackle Randy White (the Dallas Cowboys' number 54) who showed more drive, hard training and passion for Muay Thai than any of his teammates.

The vision of spreading Muay Thai worldwide...

Sirisute is a great advocate of Thai customs and culture, which he teaches in his Muay Thai curriculum, as well as discipline and respect. However, he acknowledges that back then (and to some extent still today) the teaching of Muay Thai is hampered by the cultural differences that many fighters and trainers from his homeland experience when they arrive in new countries. For Sirisute, integrating into a new society is a necessity. His own ability to bring the right “dose of Thailand” to a given situation has enabled Ajarn Chai to realize and expand the “Thai Boxing Association of USA” (now “World Thai Boxing Association”).

His vision for the future of his network is to continue to strive for the growth of Muay Thai, combined with the desire for it to reach new heights. Specifically, that Thai Boxing is officially represented at the Olympic Games. In his opinion, there are many great fighters in Thailand who have never had the opportunity to fight and make a name for themselves outside of their country.

The USA as his new Muay Thai home!

After retiring as a fighter, Sirisute traveled to the USA in 1968 to spread Muay Thai there. He quickly realized that American culture at the end of the 1960s was very different from the Thai fighting scene. He got off the plane and shortly afterwards ended up at the rock concert in Woodstock. Recalling the wild goings-on there, Sirisute says: “Man, I thought the Americans were completely crazy!”. Sirisute had a pronounced penchant for mischief at the time and somehow managed to befriend and train a notorious motorcycle gang (the Hells Angels): “I had no idea who they were!” says Ajarn Chai with a smile. Until the FBI enlightened him, and so he became an FBI instructor. Back then, in the 70s, you could see both groups in the same class, which would be unthinkable today!

Nevertheless, Sirisute had a vision to spread Muay Thai and he was determined to pursue it. Ajarn Chai told me: “The first few years were lean, at a time when Muay Thai was not known to the public and there was a lot of hostility from other martial arts”; not a week went by without him facing a challenge in a duel, and to their surprise they realized that Surachai Sirisute was not to be trifled with.

His vision of “Muay Thai for all” took shape...

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Ajarn Chai taught at various colleges in Southern California. During this time, he also trained more and more students in his home, whose backyard was converted into a Thai-style training camp. Many of Ajarn Chai's early fighters, such as Mike Goldbach, Reggie Jackson, Glen Hernandez and Don Boyd, came from this backyard training. It was this core of fighters that Ajarn Chai also brought to Thailand in 1982 to present the first American Muay Thai team for the World Championships.

But a few surprises awaited him in Thailand: Sirisute had to deal with the organization about the fighting procedure, especially the traditional “Wai Kru” (the “respect for the teacher” ring dance), the uniform - the Muay Thai shorts, and the use of knee and elbow strikes. Ajarn Chai continued: “They told me that my fighters were not allowed to wear Muay Thai shorts, but a white Gi!”; “...also, they used to be laughed at as foreigners when they did the Wai Kru, but soon the laughter went out of them, and they went down with a knockout!” Thanks in part to Sirisute's early efforts, Muay Thai fighters no longer must contend with this kind of indifference.

The “Sirisute – Inosanto” connection!

In 1978, Sirisute met a young Filipino American high school teacher named Dan Inosanto. Inosanto started practicing as a student in Ajarn Chai's backyard and the two soon became close friends. One day, Ajarn Chai gave Inosanto the task of “trampling the leaves of a tree” in his backyard, but without putting his arms down. “I forgot about him when I went shopping!” while Inosanto stewed in the Los Angeles summer heat. When Ajarn Chai returned a few hours later, Inosanto was so exhausted and dehydrated that he could barely stand up. “But he still had his hands in the air and was kicking,” Ajarn Chai said with a smile. Sirisute exclaimed, “Oh my God... I had forgotten all about you!” Indeed, Sirisute had not forgotten about his new friend Inosanto, but was testing him to see if he would continue and come back.

Guro Dan Inosanto came back and the friendship that developed between the two men in those years has brought good things to both over the decades. Guro Dan, who was already very well known in the US, introduced Ajarn Chai to his seminars, which greatly helped Ajarn Chai raise the profile of Muay Thai in the US and soon around the world.

I would say that especially in the 80s, martial arts and combat sports experienced an excessive level of popularity worldwide. Perhaps also because the film industry included more and more fight scenes (as we can compare them today with the MMA and UFC Octagon). People in other sports had also realized that disciplines could be “cross-trained” to simply achieve better results.

In 1983, Guro Inosanto introduced his friend Sirisute to the Dallas Cowboys football team. Ajarn Chai continues: “I just showed him (Tony Dorsett) how to hold the Thai pad (the armlength kick pad) for me...”, and when Sirisute's right leg hit the pad like a jackhammer, Dorsett exclaimed in amazement: “...this guy is not human!”. And so it was that the Dallas Cowboys soon started using Thai kicks and skip knees and integrated Ajarn Chai Muay Thai training until Landry's departure in 1990.

The Muay Thai test and the effect on my Cross-Fighting:

Today, Sirisute continues to work tirelessly to turn his eager students around the world into excellent Muay Thai instructors and representatives. But as a Muay Thai student with him, you also must be prepared to give it your all. When I took the Muay Thai test with my brother Demetrio in the back of our house, I had tears in my eyes at the end. Our curious and frightened neighbors had heard the loud noises we were making and came to their windows to watch the unique spectacle live. Some of them were so shocked that they went to our parents to find out what the four of us (Ajarn Chai, Sifu Chema and the two of us) were doing outside on the green meadow. My parents just hoped that nobody had the stupid idea of calling the police, which was conceivable in Switzerland at the time and wouldn't have surprised us.

I feel sorry today when I think about how hard Ajarn Chai fought for the recognition of true Muay Thai. Many schools around the world, including in Thailand, now teach a (second-hand) Muay Thai that shouldn't even have that name. With the rise and spread of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Thai boxing has become so commercialized that the quality of instruction has suffered.

The “Thai Boxing Association of the USA” (now the World Thai Boxing Association), founded by Ajarn Chai, now has more than 70 branches in the USA and is represented in almost all US states. It has also expanded to over 17 countries worldwide. Today, he still travels to a different city almost every week to uphold his vision and work to bring Muay Thai to everyone.

Ajarn Chai Sirisute will be visiting us again in Zurich at the end of September 2024 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the “Thai Boxing Association of the USA - Branch Switzerland” with the Vacirca Brothers. During the whole week we have organized an exclusive “Thai Martial Arts Camp” and on the weekend Sirisute will teach Muay Thai for two days. We are looking forward to this great reunion with our beloved Grandmaster Ajarn Chai.

Self-defense programs are very important nowadays due to the increase of crimes around the world and are more comprehensive than martial arts sports training.

The PFS program has been developed by military experts in the field of combat and high-level martial arts instructors under the supervision of its founder, Master Ahmed Al-Houli, and is now considered one of the most important combat programs in the face of real confrontations. Its practice has spread to several countries. An important program for both military and civilian personnel to protect society.

Fundamental Aspects

"As a martial artist and security professional, it is critical to me that a self-defence system for private security, law enforcement, police and special forces be effective, direct and realistic. After more than 40 years in the martial arts world and more than 25 years in the security industry, I have gained extensive knowledge and experience in security, tactics and psychology that I use professionally. The OLIVA Combat System (O.C.S.) offers pragmatic, professional and effective defence through compact training".

1) Main aspects.

2) The OLIVA Combat System is the result of years of experience in the security sector and intensive international training and research. My life has always been dedicated to martial arts and self-defense for individuals and law enforcement officers, which has led me to the conviction that “security forces, law enforcement officers, judicial officers and special units must be professionally and effectively trained!”. This conviction should never be neglected or underestimated.

3) This program is well-founded and is an effective measure to prevent crimes and prosecutions at the various levels of the security forces and bring them in line with legislation and civil protection authority. It is a tailored self-defense program for security forces.

4) First aspect: holistic self-defense.

5) In private security or security forces, the subject of self-defense cannot be considered in isolation. Important focal points are the right mindset (“No to violence!”), communication, deescalation, self-protection, personal safety and self-protection skills, as well as legal principles. These aspects must be mastered to perfection in order to apply them effectively.

6) Second aspect: preparation for exceptional situations

7) It is of utmost importance to prepare private security forces for dynamic security, psychology.

8) Coping, combat stress management, threat defense training, 360° conflict cycle and 4D strategy. In extreme situations, these topics can save lives or neutralize dangers. An unprofessional approach is serious and counterproductive, as it can cost health or life.

9) Third issue: Proper application of force.

10) When applying techniques, it must be clear what constitutes “reasonable force” and what constitutes “excessive force”. Check with your local law enforcement agency, as laws vary from country to country. As a law enforcement officer, familiarize yourself.

11) Familiarize yourself with your agency's “use of force” policy.

Fourth aspect: Realistic self-defense

1) Realistic self-defense is not pretty in its execution, but it is very effective. Pretty self-defense, on the other hand, is not realistic and is ineffective, even if it is pleasing to the eye. Real confrontations are not martial arts.

2) Fifth aspect: mindset.

3) A 100% mindset paralyzes attackers or perpetrators of violence in most cases, acting within their loop of observation, orientation, decision making and action. With this mindset we are ahead and can control the situation.

4) Sixth aspect: levels of aggression.

5) Never underestimate the different levels of aggressiveness. An aggressor's level of aggressiveness can be decisive. Our response must be timely and adequate, as we never know if resistance will turn into lethal aggression. Therefore, we must be very well prepared to survive even a lethal aggression with a perfect defense.

6) Seventh aspect: drug-induced aggression.

7) Self-defense when dealing with people under the influence of drugs is a common scenario. Drug addiction can be classified into four main groups: Hallucinogens, Stimulants, Depressants and Inhalants. Recognizing and understanding these groups is crucial to a correct response.

8) Eighth Aspect: Reality Awareness.

9) The awareness that an altercation in the line of duty or in private life can be fatal or even deadly makes the whole training concept more effective. It increases perception, understanding of reality and emotional control. True reality must be understood 100%. Preparation for physically and psychologically dangerous close encounters increases the chances of survival.

10) Ninth aspect: Less is more.

11) For realistic and effective self-defense, a basic principle applies: less is more.

“The best learning remains self-esteem, self-knowledge and self-confidence, you are your own limits.”

The power of the culture of error

The power of the culture of error

The world we live in, the fear of making mistakes seems to be an inevitable part of life. From an early age, we are conditioned to fear mistakes-these words, “mistake,” “wrong,” “not done right,” echo in our heads like an unpleasant echo. In school, we quickly learn that mistakes are a bad thing. They mean failure, not passing, falling behind. This fear of mistakes can become a paralyzing block that prevents us from learning, growing and improving from our mistakes.

But, in reality, mistakes are essential in the learning process, especially in new environments. Certainly, there are situations in which mistakes are not an option. But in those moments, the learner must be gently guided, led slowly toward independence. No one enters a new world and masters it perfectly from the start. Even after years of practice, every student always seeks to improve.

However, a toxic culture of error creates pressure and anxiety, especially for new martial arts students already facing the challenges of an unfamiliar environment, techniques and art. Instead of focusing exclusively on not making mistakes, everyone should concentrate on mastering the current task to the best of their ability. A constant mantra of “I can't make a mistake” can lead to negative self-talk, resulting in tunnel vision and clouding the understanding of the situation.

Healthy optimism, on the other hand, can help to reduce uncertainty and find better solutions. It is not about making mistakes lightly, but accepting them as part of the learning process. A more positive approach to new tasks can lead to a greater sense of accomplishment and greater independence.

Destigmatizing mistakes encourages a sober approach and constructive criticism, which in turn leads to more effective knowledge acquisition. After an introduction, tasks should be completed independently as much as possible in order to create space for personal growth. Healthy self-reflection and the desire for constant improvement are fundamental elements required of

us in a new martial art, the living environment, to gain solid ground under our feet.

“Recognizing and accepting our own mistakes is an important step on the path to long-term personal growth and development.

This ability allows us to learn from our experiences, broaden our perspectives and ultimately become more resilient. By reflecting on our mistakes and accepting them, we open the door to new insights and opportunities that help us continually develop.”

Important Note

1) Read this usage warning carefully before proceeding.

2) The OLIVA Combat System (O.C.S.) is the result of years of intensive international training and research. It combines proven techniques and innovative methods into a complete self-defense system.

3) Always consult a physician before beginning techniques and exercise programs. Train under supervision.

4) Shooting techniques, hand-to-hand combat methods, knife techniques, baton exercises, handcuffing techniques and the use of pepper spray may only be practiced under the direction of an officially recognized and qualified instructor. Never attempt to practice these techniques independently at home.

5) Safety first.

6) Do not watch or practice these techniques if you are a minor. Never train with real weapons. The use of real weapons and hand-to-hand combat techniques involves significant risks that can result in serious injury or death. If you are not prepared to take full responsibility for your actions, do not use real weapons or close combat techniques.

7) Use firearms only under supervision

8) Use a real firearm only on an official and recognized firing range and only under the supervision of a qualified and recognized firing instructor. Always follow all safety rules for handling firearms.

The knife is the most dangerous and feared weapon in a fight. Very easy to get and very often deadly. The Oliva Combat System defense program against a knife attack involves concrete action, efficiency and perfection. It is a total fight, based on simple knife and non-knife fighting mechanisms. A street fight against an armed person requires first of all psychological management and then technical mastery, which can only be obtained through special training. Only in this way can we deal with fear, to give success to the concepts of fighting, resistance and victory. The system could be described as the civilian version of the C.A.T. system ("Cobra Assault Tactics") taught to the Special Forces, which is characterized by extremely direct, aggressive, simple, fast and very effective mechanisms. Through specific high-level tactical-technical training, certain skills are taught that, along with basic training, allow survival in a confrontation with or without a weapon. These skills include: Sensitivity, Reaction, Explosiveness, Body Coordination, Speed, Timing and of course the most important of all, Killer Instinct. "The essential thing is to be as concrete, efficient and perfect as possible. This is the only way we have a chance of defense". This is the objective of the Oliva Combat System. 40 min.

A Tribute to Takayuki Kubota:

An analysis of his legacy to the martial arts community

Takayuki Kubota is in the martial arts community was better known under the simple name Tak. That simple and everyone’s endearing name, by which everyone called him due to its simplicity, for many, did not at all reveal that an exceptional master of martial arts was hiding behind it.

Tak Kubota was born on September 20,1934, in the historic city of Kumamoto which is located in the southern part of Japan. Kubota entered the world of martial arts very early, so from the age of four he was under the supervision of his father, who was a master of martial arts ju jitsu, kendo and ken jutsu. His early training included various disciplines, from bamboo yari,to judo,ju jutsu, kendo and keibo-jutsu,and makiwara practice. Kubota had four brothers, so already in his youth he learned modesty, but also the competitive spirit that often prevails among brothers.

David “Sensei” Stainko

During World War II, he learned karate under the guidance of two Okinawans instructors Terada and Tokunaga, stationed in his village. They taught the locals the basics of karate and which they simply called Te, and did not yet use the name karate. At the age of 13, Kubota went to Tokyo to seek his fortune in a bigger city. When he came to Tokyo, he quickly realized that it was difficult to find a job as well as a permanent place to stay. Such difficult life circumstances forced him already at a young age to make good use of all his knowledge and skills in order to survive and earn enough money.

Walking through the city Kubota helped the police to capture some criminals using his skill in taiho jutsu (arresting technique). Seeing that he was a capable young man, one of the commanders in the police took young Kubota under his care and helped him in his further education and development. When he managed to earn enough money, he went in search of different karate instructors throughout the region where he wanted to perfect and supplement his knowledge. In 1947, at age of 14, he was noticed by Tokyo Police and was soon teaching different martial arts (ju jutsu, karate, and kendo jutsu) to officers of Kamata Police Department. He did this for 10 years.

Working as a policeman he was sometimes assigned to the most notorious part of the city where, in order to survive, he had to make the best use of all his knowledge and martial arts skills in practice. Kubota opened his first karate dojo at the age of 17. From 1950-1959, he was an instructor for the US Army, Air Force, and marines in kendo, karate, judo, ju jutsu, and giyokutejitsu. With his work and commitment, he very quickly gained a reputation as a quality instructor, so he was soon called as an instructor in the American Army and as a governor’s employee.

On August 2, 1964, Kubota was invited by Ed Parker to give a demonstration at Parker’s First Annual International karate Tournament in Long Beach, California. In late 1964, Kubota permanently relocated to America. After some time he got a job as an instructor at the Los Angeles police. He spent several years there teaching the police self-defense and various martial arts techniques. Gradually working in the police force, Kubota developed his own style of karate naming it Gosoku ryu (Go, hard – soku, fast style),and he consequently held title Soke meaning - “head of family/style” .

David “Sensei” Stainko

Kubota created his style of karate gradually after many years of hard training and studying various styles of karate, practicing and making friends with various famous masters from different styles of karate. He wrote books, acting in movies, hung out with famous people and remained humble as he always was. Although today there are about twenty more well-known types of karate styles, gosoku-ryu is recognizable among all of them due to its technique.

The techniques used are basically simple without any unnecessary movements .The economy of movements is taken into account as well as the power of performing individual techniques, and especially the speed of performing individual movements. In this way, a very effective style of karate was created, the effectiveness of which is equally good both in attack and in defense against attackers. Tak also performed various techniques with weapons, practicing ko-budo, kendo, ken-jutsu, combining these different techniques for self-defense purposes. Thinking about how to help the most vulnerable groups of the population to defend themselves in case of sudden attack, he designed a key chain in the shape of yawara and called it Kubotan.

Kubotan is primarily intended for women, children and the elderly, but of course everyone can use it if necessary. Although Tak demonstrated many of selfdefense techniques with the kubotan, it should be emphasized that he did not perform all the techniques, thus he wanted to leave other instructors the space and freedom to explore all the possibilities of using the kubotan for self-defense. Although today some instructors of various martial arts often ask questions about how practical and effective the kubotan really is. The answer to that question will be revealed by the fact that today there is no self-defense expert in the world who has not used or does not know how to use kubotan.

David “Sensei” Stainko

In the history of martial arts it is known that over time all styles of karate are subject to miner or major changes (some techniques, katas, and others). Kubota was also the founder and president of the International karate association, but unfortunately, during the history of karate, it is already known that many karate associations changed their original format. Studying the history of karate, we could prove that all styles as well as various karate organizations are subject to minor or major changes, but what will certainly never change is the effectiveness of kubotan and its application in self-defense.

Many people think that the basis purpose of karate is divided into three parts: practicing katas, practicing fightingkumite and practicing various techniques – kihon, but they are wrong. The basic purpose of karate is primarily to create a brave, strong, skilled and above all good person, who is always ready to protect and help a weaker person. Giving the world his kubotan invention, Tak showed everyone that he was exactly that kind of man.

To the regret of many who loved and respected him, Tak Kubota died in Glendale, California on August 14,2024, at the age of 89. After his death, he left behind his style of karate, his association, his books and films and his contribution to self-defense. It is up us to preserve his memory by applying something off his legacy in our work and action for the future development of martial arts.

Everyone knows Bruce Lee. That's why, and because our Kung Fu family runs a school in his name, we went to Shunde, China. In this place, where Bruce's family originally came from, is the Bruce Lee Museum, with probably the largest statue of the film star.

The world's most famous Kung Fu movie star and the world's most famous Kung Fu family came together when we were greeted there by the people in charge of the museum. Of course there were demonstrations and a lively exchange of ideas.

My favorite part was the exhibition. It contained numerous documents, old pictures and movie props. This glimpse into the past was the last highlight of our Shaolin tour. This look back made me realize once again how far we ourselves have already come - to the most successful Kung Fu school in Switzerland

Overall, the U.S. Kuoshu Cup in Rockville was a great success and Grandmaster Martin Sewer was instrumental in making the event an unforgettable experience for all involved. His presence and contribution emphasized the importance of tradition, discipline and community in the world of martial arts.

Grand Master Martin Sewer presents in this work a complete course of Bak Hok Pai, the style of the white crane. The crane is an elegant animal. With its white feathered robe, one moment it stands like a ruler, guarding its territory. The next moment, it flaps its wings and moves forward at lightning speed. Although everyone has a clear picture of this graceful creature in their mind, most find it difficult to imagine this great bird in a fight. How does a crane actually fight when threatened? Like all animal styles, the crane style was created by studying the animal's strategies and tactics during a fight and transferring them to humans. This also gave rise to the five animal styles that have stood the test of time and are taught in my school today: Tiger, Crane, Snake, Leopard and Dragon. Mastering all these animal styles and the elements that go with them makes one a perfect human being, say the legends of Kung Fu, and it is naturally part of the philosophy of a true warrior to want to constantly improve and achieve perfection. Although the knowledge/skill of the five animals belongs to advanced levels, four of the mentioned styles are even accessible to beginners in the form of seminars. In them, eager students not only get a deeper insight into our Hung Gar, but also learn the first fighting techniques of the respective animal style, and the most common comment is: "I would not have thought that these techniques could be so efficient...!".

Combat Muay Boran: offensive combinations

Combat Muay Boran is a modern-traditional style of Siamese fighting that combines ancient thai traditions with modern scientific methods. The final goal is to teach men and women of all physical and psychological conditions to fight, on the ring or in the street. The training systems devised by Thai masters of old are combined with modern Science, in order to “create” complete martial artists. From a technical point of view, Combat Muay Boran syllabus in based on 78 strategic principles or Chern Muay. These fundamental elements, once totally mastered, give practitioners a total understanding of all-out (martial) fighting. One of the “tricks” that make this style so effective is the use of sophisticated combinations of strikes instead of single blows in attack or when counterattacking. This advanced strategy is called Phasom Muay.

• Situation 1: direct attack

A Muay fighter’s offensive strategy is designed to create openings in an opponent’s wall of defense: through correct timing and swift footwork, an expert Nak Muay will position himself at the right range to unleash powerful blows aimed at his opponent’s unprotected vulnerable spots.

The best way to successfully reach an opponent’s weak spots is by combinations of strikes (Phasom Muay); each blow may carry the Nak Muay’s bodyweight behind it (full power blow) or may be a “mock blow”, designed to mislead and to open the way to a real heavy blow. The way strikes are combined makes the difference between an expert fighter and a novice: the best fighters deliver blows in series, strikes are linked in a natural manner, flowing smoothly one after the other. In creating combinations, two elements have to be considered: the leading weapon and the number of strokes.

The weapons that are usually chosen as a lead are the straight punch (mahd trong), the front kick (tiip trong) or the vertical/diagonal round kick (tae trong/chieng), since they allow the fighter to attack while keeping most of his sensitive spots well covered. The follow up weapons will naturally flow after the lead: each fighter will develop his own combinations according to his level of skill and his physical structure. As far as the number of blows (mock or real) usually employed by an expert boxer they usually go from 1 to 4. Therefore, the four basic patterns for combination striking are:

1. Mai Rook Neun Chawa or one step attack pattern

2. Mai Rook Song Chawa or two steps attack pattern

3. Mai Rook Saam Chawa or three steps attack pattern

4. Mai Rook Si Chawa or four steps attack pattern

Most fighters aim at throwing 3 blows in combination as this is the ideal number of strokes that guarantees optimal results (i.e., knock outs). For example a combination may be started with a rear straight head punch, followed by an inside leg kick and a straight knee aimed at the chin or face of the opponent.

Otherwise, a fake straight head punch may be followed by a liver punch, a side step and a finishing power shin kick aimed at the neck of the opponent.

Each series of strikes is executed according to a specific rhythm that is based on the fighter’s ability to “feel” the moment, speeding up or slowing down the actions as required by the situation.

• Situation 2: counterattack

When defending and counterattacking, a typical beginners’ mistake is to defend the opponent’s strike, throw a counter blow and wait. Big mistake. In fact, if you fight this way, you reduce drastically your chances of scoring and furthermore you open yourself to a possible retaliation. Just like direct attacks, also counterblows should be executed in series, not single strikes. This is the way of Combat Muay Boran. Two, three or four strikes should be follow your initial defense: if the first counter fails, don’t get discouraged and keep on “flowing”. Throw more than one counter and aim your blows carefully: one of your strikes will land on a sensitive spot and lead you to victory.

For example, after parrying a straight right and countering with a straight punch, don’t feel satisfied. On the contrary, let your body go with the flow and follow up with one or two more counters. You can combine the straight right with a left body hook and a horizontal elbow to the head. In the first place, hitting head, body, head will For more information about Combat Muay Boran in Mexico: Ass. Arjarn Gustavo Perez Hernadez imbamuayboranmexico@gmail.com

make the opponent’s defence much harder. Second, the three counters follow a specific order that is designed to charge each blow with growing kinetic energy, thus maximizing the chances to score a clean knock out. Let’s see more examples of multiple counter strikes.

Example 1: a 1-2 combination (left lead followed by right cross) can be blocked and the opponent’s right arm can be grabbed with both hands. The possible combined counterattacks that may follow the defensive action are: a series of 2 or more body knee strikes, an arm lock leading to a take down and a finishing elbow break.

Example 2: against a front kick to the body, a common defense is a low parry. The possible series of counterattacks are: a body knee strike, a head knee strike (to the chin or face), a downwards swing kick to the knee and a finishing round kick to the backbone (cervical vertebrae).

All this information is priceless for martial artists who wants to upgrade their combat skills and for ring fighters who want to broaden their knowledge of fighting techniques. A good example of how Combat Muay Boran can be the answer for both kinds of needs is the IMBA Mexico case. As a matter of fact, Mexico has a long and glorious tradition of ring fighters, especially in international Boxing. Muay Thai is also very popular in that country and in the course of the last

decade, many Mexican Thai Boxers and international Boxers were attracted to Muay Boran IMBA and, recently, by Combat Muay Boran. Mexicans are tough fighters and they wouldn’t accept a “new” combat art without testing its efficiency. The success Combat Muay Boran is having in Mexico is a living proof that this discipline is perfectly suitable for ring sports as well as self-defence oriented martial arts.

In this fourth work, Justo Dieguez, creator of the Keysi Fighting Method, focuses on the area of grabs and traps. We will see 10 technical sequences in which the grab, the trap, are the objective, although it will be treated as a consequence. At KEYSI we do not think beforehand about performing a grab, it is something that will be the consequence of a certain situation. In a risk situation, your senses connect you with your environment, you are pure instinct, auditory, visual and contact. This ability allows you to focus your concentration, recognize your surroundings and decide what actions to take. It is you with your mental capacity that makes everything a weapon, a wall, a corner, a step, etc. On the street, in a real situation, the rules don't work. With technique you are not going to achieve your goals. Technique is that bridge that will get you to the target, but it is not the target. In a risky situation, instinctive responsiveness has to prevail over technique. When you train with this mentality you know that a millisecond can be vital. You understand that you don't have the possibility to extend the time, that you can't play on your opponent's patience or ability to manipulate him. You understand that you are at a complete disadvantage, that your response must be explosive and that you have to get out of there.

“Larga Mano” (Long Hand) simply means long-distance combat, a method that teaches you to stay away from your opponent and hurt him without even entering the hand-to-hand distance. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula. When the Philippine Arnis spread in the West, to distinguish it from Fencing, it was called "the living hand fencing", because the hand that did not hold the weapon, actively collaborated in the actions of defense and offense. Thus, the difference between the two systems, the East and the West, is that in Olympic fencing, the unarmed hand is kept safe and used at most to balance the impulse in assaults; in Arnis the unarmed hand is alive and active.

In this work, Professor Maltese shows us the basic positions, defenses and fundamental attacks, guard exercises, blocking, crossing and counterattack in Redondo, the fifth, seventh, eighth and contras defenses, dynamic training and free combat exercises with protections. We will also see the bag training (blows, blockades and counterattacks) and a final chapter dedicated to Sword and Dagger, the Italian art in the Philippine Kali, executed with authentic weapons.

The Silent Art of Needles: Ukibari, Harikomi and Tobibari no Shurikenjutsu

“Just as a single drop poisons the ocean, a single needle can silence the strongest of warriors.”

(Author unknown)

Traditional Japanese arts are deeply rooted in a philosophy that transcends simple physical training or the application of martial techniques. They are expressions of a broader understanding of the world, where opposites coexist in a delicate balance. Among these opposites, the dualism between the healing arts and the arts of war stands out as one of the most intriguing and powerful aspects of Japan's martial culture.

This dualism is exemplified in the way Japanese warriors, especially those practicing disciplines such as Shurikenjutsu, used their knowledge of traditional medicine for martial purposes. The use of acupuncture needles, originally designed to restore balance to the body and cure illness, was adapted to become a lethal tool in the hands of a warrior. This is not just a case of adapting tools, but a demonstration of the strategic mindset of ancient practitioners, who saw healing knowledge as a form of control over life and death.

On the battlefield, this combination of medical and martial knowledge served as a valuable strategic resource. The ability to quietly and precisely neutralize an enemy using techniques such as Ukibari (浮き針 ), Harikomi (針込み ) and Tobibari (飛び針 ) exemplifies how a deep understanding of human anatomy could be turned into a military advantage. Each of these techniques reflects the sophistication, precision and strategy of warriors practicing traditional Japanese arts.

Ukibari (浮き針): The Floating Needle

Ukibari, which translates as “Floating Needle”, is a silent assassination technique, historically used in covert operations where discretion was vital. This technique dates back to a time when eliminating targets without leaving visible traces was essential. The use of an almost imperceptible poisoned needle offered a more subtle alternative to a blade or shuriken, especially in environments where silence was crucial.

Ukibari dates back to a time when the need to eliminate targets without leaving visible traces was vital. In such cases, a simple poisoned needle could be more effective than a blade or a shuriken star, especially in environments where silence was crucial. For this reason, the effectiveness of the technique depended as much on manual skill as on in-depth knowledge of poisons.

Thus, the strategic context of Ukibari involved the preparation of needles poisoned with toxic substances, carefully chosen to ensure a quick and discreet death. The technique involved precise penetration of the needle into vital points, where muscle and bone protection was minimal, ensuring that the poison quickly entered the bloodstream.

Throwing techniques

One of the needle-throwing approaches in Ukibari involves using the thumbnail or index finger as a support for the needle. Practitioners often cultivated longer nails to make it easier to handle the needle, which was thrown with surgical precision, ensuring that the target was hit with maximum effectiveness.

However, the force required for the throw comes not only from the strength of the nails or movements of the arm, but from the concentration of energy in the “hara”, the energy center located in the abdomen. This energy from the center is channeled to the tip of the needle, ensuring that the throw is precise and that the target is reached as effectively as possible.

The technique consisted of a precise, perpendicular penetration of the needle, usually into vital points or areas less protected by muscles and bones. Once the poison entered the bloodstream, its devastating effects were almost immediate, resulting in a quick and silent death. Another variation of the technique involves using the index finger to support the needle at the top, allowing for a controlled and targeted throw. Both techniques are highly effective, but require practice and technical precision to perform correctly.

Anatomical Aspects: Targets and Impact Zones

To ensure the success of Ukibari, anatomical knowledge is essential. The practitioner must be able to identify the most vulnerable areas of the body, where needle penetration would be most lethal. Areas such as the jugular, main arteries, and regions with less muscular protection are ideal targets. Choosing these areas not only increases the likelihood of successful poisoning, but also ensures that the attack is

swift and lethal, minimizing the possibility of a reaction on the part of the victim.

Strategy and discretion: The use of poisons in Ukibari

The effectiveness of Ukibari was not restricted to manual dexterity, but also to an in-depth knowledge of poisons. The needles used in this technique were often prepared with toxic substances and were known to use at least 36 different formulas. Each poison was carefully chosen to ensure that the target's death was quick and discreet, without giving the slightest chance of alarm.

Harikomi

(針込み

): The Art of Silent Insertion

Harikomi is another subtle technique within Shurikenjutsu, focused on the precise insertion of poisoned needles into vital points of the body. This technique was particularly effective in close quarters, where the victim hardly noticed the attack until it was too late. Harikomi therefore requires a deep understanding of the human anatomy, allowing the practitioner to identify the points where the bloodstream is most accessible. The needle is inserted with extreme care and precision, often indoors, where discretion is essential.

Historically, Harikomi was used in situations where a simple touch could mean a person's instant death. Witnesses often believed it was some kind of magic, when in fact it was the precise application of a poisoned needle to strategic points on the body. This deadly method allowed the practitioner to neutralize an opponent quickly and silently, without arousing suspicion.

However, the Harikomi technique is not limited to the mere insertion of the needle. It involves a deep understanding of the human anatomy and the ability to identify points where the bloodstream is most accessible, ensuring that the poison is absorbed quickly by the body. The practitioner needed to be in close proximity to the victim, usually in a context of distraction or deception, where quick and precise action was crucial.

Harikomi's strategy involved not only choosing the right moment, but also mastering specific techniques that allowed the needle to be inserted without the victim realizing the attack until it was too late. This technique was especially effective in closed environments, such as castles or noble residences, where the use of more visible weapons could arouse suspicion.

There are two main techniques for applying Harikomi, both of which require great dexterity and control on the part of the practitioner. The first technique involves using the thumbnail as a fulcrum for the needle. Experienced practitioners often cultivate slightly longer nails to make it easier to fit the needle. The technique consists of holding the needle firmly with the nail, approaching the victim and, with a quick and precise movement, inserting the entire needle into a vital point, such as the neck or around the eyes. As the needle penetrates the skin, it releases the poison directly into the bloodstream, resulting in an almost immediate effect.

In this technique it is crucial that pressure is applied correctly; the thumb should never exert force directly on the needle to avoid slipping. The movement must be fluid and natural, taking advantage of the victim's moment of distraction to perform the insertion.

In the second technique, the needle is held with the fingernail at the bottom to ensure an even firmer fit. With the hand positioned in this way, the practitioner can insert the needle into the neck or other vital area with the same precision. This technique is ideal for situations in which the practitioner needs to strike quickly without losing precision.

Both techniques were traditionally practiced on hard surfaces, such as trees, so that the practitioner could develop the strength and precision needed for effective application. Over time, more advanced practitioners learned to focus their energy on the wrist, keeping the shoulder and elbow relaxed to ensure precise and controlled penetration.

Anatomical aspects: Choice of targets

The success of Harikomi depends on a thorough knowledge of the human anatomy. Practitioners needed to identify points where the bloodstream was most accessible and where needle penetration would have the most lethal effect. Areas such as the neck, where important arteries are easily reached, or around the eyes, where the skin is thinner and less protected, were preferred targets.

In addition, Harikomi required an understanding of how to direct body energy to maximize the effectiveness of the attack. The correct alignment of the hand, especially the middle finger, with the insertion movement, was essential to ensure that the needle penetrated deeply and released the poison with maximum efficiency.

Tobibari (飛び針):

The Art of Needle Throwing in Shurikenjutsu

Finally, Tobibari stands out for its subtlety and efficiency. Literally translated as “flying needle”, Tobibari involves throwing small needles, traditionally prepared with poison, in a short-range attack.

The Tobibari technique dates back to ancient Japanese times marked by political intrigue and the need for discreet methods of neutralizing enemies. In this context, the ability to throw a poisoned needle accurately and effectively became a valuable practice, especially in situations where it was necessary to use silent and imperceptible weapons. The technique was developed as a way of neutralizing, incapacitating or even distracting an opponent, creating an opening for a subsequent attack or facilitating a strategic escape.

Tobibari is characterized by being a close-range technique, generally effective at ranges between 1 and 1.5 meters. The needle, due to its lightness and small size, requires precise control from the practitioner for the throw to be effective. Preparation for the throw involves the use of an acupuncture needle, traditionally soaked in poison. Practitioners position the needle between the middle finger and thumb, using the thumbnail as the main support. Historically, the thumbnail of warriors who mastered this technique was deliberately left longer, making it easier to handle and throw.

The execution of the Tobibari throw begins with the alignment of the middle finger and thumb, forming a natural lever. The energy for the throw comes from the hara (腹 ), the body's energy center, located in the abdominal region. From the hara, the energy flows through the arm, which must remain completely relaxed, until it reaches the fingers. This flow of energy is crucial for the needle to be thrown with the necessary force and precision.

One of the challenges in using Tobibari is controlling the internal energy, or ki, which must be channeled efficiently to the middle finger and thumb. The “yin part” of the arm, i.e. the inner portion, plays a vital role in centralizing the force, allowing the energy to be released in a controlled manner. By combining this control with anatomical precision - targeting vulnerable areas of the body, such as the neck or eyes - the practitioner can incapacitate an opponent quickly and effectively.

The main difference between throwing a needle and a traditional shuriken is the lightness of the needle. While the shuriken has a weight and shape that aids momentum, the needle requires an adaptation of the technique, focusing on precise control of the energy to ensure that the impact is sufficient to penetrate the skin and release the poison.

In this way, mastering Tobibari no Shurikenjutsu requires not only manual skill, but also a deep understanding of energy flow and human anatomy. The practitioner must train with rigor and attention to detail, ensuring that each throw is executed with the utmost precision. With practice and patience, the Tobibari becomes a silent but lethal tool in the art of war.

Whether on the battlefield or as part of martial training, the Tobibari represents the perfect combination of technique, strategy and anatomical knowledge, reflecting the sophistication of Japanese martial arts.

Thus, it can be seen that the use of acupuncture needles in the context of these Shurikenjutsu techniques reveals a deep connection between the medical tradition and Japanese martial arts. The choice of acupuncture needles, in addition to their practicality, reflects an advanced knowledge of anatomy and the vital energy (ki) of the human body. These elements are not only combat tools, but also symbols of the balance between destruction and healing, characteristics that permeate the philosophy of martial arts.

Within Shurikenjutsu, these poisoned needles are not just weapons, but extensions of the practitioner's body and mind, where each movement is carefully calculated to maximize effectiveness and minimize risk. The knowledge of acupuncture, originally aimed at healing, is adapted for warfare, where precision in hitting vital points on the body with poisoned needles becomes a deadly skill.

This intersection between medicine and combat illustrates the dualism present in many traditional martial arts, where the same knowledge that can save a life can also take it away. In the context of Shurikenjutsu techniques, the use of acupuncture needles is a clear example of how ancient wisdom can be applied in a variety of ways, depending on the intention and the need.

The precision with which poisoned needles were used to target vital points on

the body reflected an advanced understanding of the inner workings of the human body, knowledge that was equally applicable to the practice of acupuncture for healing.

This fusion of medicine and combat reflects a holistic view of the warrior, who not only destroys, but understands the essence of the life he has the power to take. In Japanese martial traditions, this duality was not seen as contradictory, but as complementary. The same knowledge that can heal can also kill, and the choice of how to use it depended on the circumstances and strategic needs.

This balance between healing and destruction was also reflected in the way warriors approached conflict. Instead of seeing war as a simple act of violence, they saw it as an extension of life, where the same precision and control needed to heal were also needed to win. The art of war, then, became an art form in itself, where life and death were parts of a greater whole.

Therefore, the dualism present in traditional Japanese arts, especially in the combination of medicine and combat, is an expression of the profound wisdom and complexity of these practices. It reminds us that, at its core, life is a constant balance between opposing forces, and that the true master is the one who can navigate between these opposites with grace, wisdom and purpose.

Over the years, as my involvement in the organization of these events has deepened, my perspective has evolved significantly. Initially, I approached the event as a simple participant, focusing solely on advancing my personal practice and training. However, as time passed, I began to recognize that I was part of something far greater than myself—a global community united by shared values and a collective mission. This realization has not only changed my point of view but also strengthened my commitment to contributing to this extraordinary journey in any way I can.

This year, as with several of the previous events, Grandmaster Taejoon Lee (Kuk Sa Nim) honored me with the immense responsibility of organizing the entire event. It was a privilege I embraced with great enthusiasm and fervor. However, this year brought with it a unique set of challenges that made my task far more difficult than ever before. For months leading up to the event, I had been navigating through delicate and heavy family matters that demanded an immense emotional toll on me.

Even in the midst of these personal struggles, I remained committed to my duties. I had to focus on managing our academy with the same level of dedication and care that I had always upheld. Teaching my students, preparing for classes, and leading the organization of this significant event weighed heavily on me, yet I knew that I could not let my condition affect those around me. The students, instructors, and Masters depended on me, and I felt a deep responsibility not to let them down.

As the event drew near, just days before it was set to begin, I found myself utterly exhausted—both physically and spiritually. The burdens I was carrying had become overwhelming, crushing me to the point where I felt close to breaking. My spirit was drained, and the temptation to surrender to the pressure was strong. I knew, however, that I could not afford to give in. So many things and people were relying on me. Still, it felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders and I wasn’t strong enough to bear it.

Fortunately, I was not alone. Instructor Pietro Picconi of Hwa Rang Do Pisa came to my aid, offering his generous and selfless time and energy. His support was invaluable—he helped lighten the load I was carrying and gave me the strength to press on. With his assistance, I was able to continue moving forward, despite the immense strain I was under.

Though my family needed me during this difficult time, I also had to fulfill my duties and ensure that everything for the event ran smoothly. I couldn’t allow myself to falter—I owed it to the students, the instructors, and the Masters who had placed their trust in me. I was determined not to let anyone down.

And so, the event finally arrived. A few hours before the start, I found myself drained, having slept very little in the preceding days. Exhaustion had taken hold of me, and I felt like a lone warrior on a battlefield, surrounded by fierce enemies, standing at the brink of defeat. My spirit felt battered, and I was on the verge of giving up.

But if there is one lesson that my years of practicing Hwa Rang Do have taught me, it is this: the hardest moments—those in which the body refuses to respond, the mind is exhausted, and the spirit is on the verge of breaking—are the moments that define us. These are the moments when we are forged into true warriors, into a Hwarang. Our teachers have trained us for precisely these challenges, because it is in these moments of struggle that we find the catalyst for transformation.

When the body is pushed beyond its perceived limits, when the mind is forced to focus despite fatigue, and when the soul is tested to its core, this is where true growth begins. This is something I now understand deeply.

In Hwa Rang Do, resilience is not simply about endurance; it is a spiritual practice. It is the strength to maintain one’s integrity and inner peace amidst the stormiest of trials. It is the power to remain balanced and find serenity, even in the most adverse situations. This resilience is not only a physical or mental attribute but a spiritual state—one that allows us to transcend our circumstances and emerge stronger, with a clearer understanding of who we are and what we are capable of.

And so, the event finally begins. For me, it begins the very moment my gaze meets that of Do Joo Nim (Supreme Grandmaster Dr. Joo Bang Lee) and Kuk Sa Nim. Instantly, I am struck by an immense surge of energy, as though a powerful current flows through me, reigniting my spirit. In that moment, I know that my personal training has commenced. What lies ahead will be a journey filled with extraordinary highs and challenging lows. Yet, regardless of what comes, the experience will never be superficial—each moment will be deeply profound, intense, and transformative.

I could spend pages detailing the technical aspects of the event. As always, they were of the highest caliber, displaying a level of depth and attention to detail that is exceedingly rare in the vast world of martial arts today. But even with their brilliance, the technical teachings remain secondary to the deeper, more significant lessons imparted by Do Joo Nim and Kuk Sa Nim. It is not simply about mastering the body, but understanding the spirit, the heart, and the mind.

The week flies by in a blur of seminars, championships, and lessons—each one highly technical and precise, yet infused with profound wisdom. Throughout, my physical exhaustion remains a constant companion, as do the personal burdens I brought with me. But something incredible begins to happen. With every passing day, after listening to the wise and insightful words of Kuk Sa Nim, I feel my spirit growing lighter. The problems that once weighed heavily on my mind seem to gradually lose their grip on me. With each new day, I feel more peace, more calm, as though my struggles are no longer mine to bear alone.

Before I know it, the event has come to an end. It is Sunday, and I find myself standing alone with Kuk Sa Nim. These are the moments that I cherish deeply—moments that I know are precious, for they are filled with an openness and connection that transcends words. As we talk, I feel our hearts completely open to one another. His words, full of wisdom and unconditional love, reach deep into my soul. They provide me with exactly what I need: an enormous strength that comes from faith, from hope, and from a love that knows no bounds.

This year’s event was unlike any other for me. It was a truly transformative experience—one that began with an overwhelming sense of heaviness. I arrived burdened with problems that felt insurmountable, my spirit and mind broken under the weight of it all. And yet, by the time the event concluded, I found myself in a place of calm and peace that I hadn’t thought possible. It culminated in a moment I will never forget: without needing to say a word, Kuk Sa Nim embraced me in a long, warm hug—a hug that was filled with boundless energy and love. In that embrace, I felt the true power of Hwa Rang Do.

This is the essence of Hwa Rang Do: it is not just a martial art, but a way of life—a source of strength, healing, and transformation that reaches far beyond physical technique. It is a path that shapes not only the body but the mind and soul, bringing clarity and peace in even the darkest of times.

Thank you, Do Joo Nim and Kuk Sa Nim, not only for all that you do but for who you are. Your guidance, your wisdom, and your love have touched my life in ways I cannot fully express. I am forever grateful. I eagerly look forward to seeing you again, along with our beloved Hwa Rang Do family, next year in Luxembourg. Until then, Hwarang forever, and may God bless you all.

“This is the essence of Hwa Rang Do: it is not just a martial art, but a way of life-a source of strength, healing, and transformation that reaches far beyond

physical technique.”
