Get ready for spring! It’s not too early to prep 2024 gardens

You may not be giving a thought to what your gardens will need come spring but believe me when I say it’s not too early to start. Waiting means that suddenly—or so it seems—literally dozens of gardening tasks will demand your attention. Addressing some now will make things easier later. Let’s take a look. Cut the bottoms from gallon containers and poke holes in the bottom for drainage, then fill with moistened seedling mix—read package labels to find seeds that need stratification—and place outdoors. This is incredible fun! Spring will come, but you can enjoy these garden tasks now. Cheer them on, you’ll be happy you did.” Of course, your loved one may still wish you’d mind your own business. They need to be reminded that you understand how hard they are working and are there to cheer them on. You are “non-judgmentally curious about their progress and what has been tough.” Tudor acknowledges this is not an easy thing to do. “But I do think that it is among the highest forms of love you can offer,” he says. “You love this person so much that you’re going to do what you think to be best for them even if they temporarily hate you for it. y “bestie” and I have been part of each other’s support systems for more than half a century. We’ve propped each other up through career changes, major moves, divorce, widowhood, illness, surgery, parents’ deaths, and myriad endeavors. Without consciously thinking about it, we withhold judgment unless an opinion is requested. We’ve learned to listen. Sometimes dark humor surfaces, and we laugh through adversity. Occasionally it’s the small stuff that calls for help. One of us might need to declutter a room. That turns into a game. A lingerie drawer gets organized, a closet is straightened. We egg each other on until the mission’s accomplished. Yet depending on the situation, showing concern or offering support isn’t always easy. Someone grappling with a major issue like alcoholism or gambling may not want to discuss it. Any offer to help with their “problem” could be viewed as interfering, especially if they don’t think they have a problem. In numerous articles, advice columnist Carolyn Hax has addressed how to be supportive without being overbearing. One thing she recommends is simply being there. “Listening is key; that’s what most people really want and need,” she says. “To start, you can always say, “I feel bad for you. Tell me what you need; help me understand the problem.”

That may lead to you being a sounding board, or just someone who sits and lends quiet comfort. Let the person know it’s fine if they change their minds about what they need. Making specific offers such as “May I buy you lunch?” or “Do you need me to run an errand?” as opposed to the generic “Let me know if there’s anything I can do,” takes the onus off the person who needs support. Many people find it difficult to ask for help. Even when you have the best of intentions, occasionally step back and examine what you’ve been doing for your friend in need. Look at things from their perspective to assess if they might be seeing your actions as controlling. Remember to give them space. For friends trying to pursue a goal, the pundits at WebMD suggest ways to provide motivation without being pushy: • Ensure what they need is readily available.

• Join them on their journey. • Celebrate progress. • Avoid nagging, criticizing, or judging. • Realize what works for one may not work for another. Benjamin Tudor, LMFT, in his article “Keeping Your Partner Accountable Without Being a Jerk” further suggests that we accept micromanagement in different areas of our lives—like when our dentist tells us to floss more—but can be resistant to the people closest to us. People don’t like to be reminded of areas in which they struggle but may still need support. What can you do? Tudor says ask for an invitation to check in on progress “and/or help remind them of their goals.” Use an accountability support system. “How better to find mutual success and to grow together than if you ask them to hold you accountable for something, February 2024 | www.foreveryoungwny.com 7

Winter got you down? Boost your health with a sauna BY AMY LYNN HARDY

t’s winter. It’s rainy and snowy and cold. Flu season is in full swing. Want to warm up and boost your health at the same time? Try a trip to a sauna—after first consulting a medical professional.

If you’ve never been in a sauna, think of it as a hot bath without water.

Scandinavians have been using saunas for years (in Helsinki, some business

meetings are conducted in the sauna!). A dry, or Finnish, sauna uses a stove or hot rocks to warm the air up to 158210 degrees Fahrenheit. Sitting in the small, dimly lit room, you’ll soon begin to relax—and sweat. In such high heat, blood vessels relax and dilate, which increases blood flow and can help relieve tension in joints and sore muscles. The benefits of regular sauna bathing range from muscle relaxation and better sleep to relieving lower back pain and reducing duration and intensity of the common cold. Note that sauna bathing with a cold is not advisable, but regular sauna usage can be a preventative measure for common colds/flu. Two Finnish studies even suggest that individuals who use a sauna four to seven times a week throughout their lives have a lower tendency toward Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease. Besides these health benefits though, the sauna feels wonderful on a cold, damp day. If you’re thinking you can’t survive in a room that hot, don’t worry. A round of sauna bathing doesn’t have to be long; start with five-minute sessions and work your way up to fifteen. After that, add additional rounds to sweat more. Don’t forget to cool down and stay hydrated between rounds and

exit the sauna immediately if you feel lightheaded or unwell. If issues such as blood pressure or asthma preclude spending time in extreme temperatures, an infrared sauna uses special electromagnetic radiation lamps that send light waves to heat the body—perfect for those who cannot tolerate extreme temperatures but still want sauna health benefits. The heat in this type of sauna ranges from 120-140 degrees, of which twenty percent warms the air and eighty percent heats the body. The infrared sauna’s lower heat allows you to start with ten to fifteen-minute rounds and work up to twenty- or thirty-minute sessions. Infrared sauna bathing is recommended three to four times a week for optimal health benefits. As with a Finnish sauna, it’s still important to be fully hydrated before entering the sauna and avoid when ill or after ingesting alcohol. What to wear in the sauna? While some Europeans prefer nude bathing, the most important factor is your comfort. Whether you prefer clothing or just a towel, your coverings should be breathable, like cotton clothing or a bathing suit. And bring a large towel to sit on. In Western New York, Catalyst Fitness on Transit and French has an electric sauna in its locker room, as do several branches of the Western New York YMCA (check their website). Local infrared sauna options include Bodhi Tree in Amherst (formerly Serenity Salt Cave), Lumos or Stretch Beyond in Orchard Park, BFLO Hydration on Hertel or Western New York Pain Relief & Integrative Wellness in Buffalo. Prices and packages range; check websites for more information. For the true Finnish sauna experience, take a weekend journey to the Finger Lakes Region and visit the Sauna Way in Stanley, NY. Or if you’re up for it, a trip to the beautiful Nordic countries! Take a chance and get your sweat on this winter! It may make the long, dark, chilly season more enjoyable.
