Think spring

Spring is just a few weeks away. It may not feel like it at the moment— at the time of this writing, it's about 25 degrees outside and the ground is covered in snow—but, just as sunrise follows sunset, it will arrive in a rush of green sprouts and robins.

Not to strain the metaphor, but it feels like this spring truly marks the return to the light from a very dark place (goodbye, 2020!). Hopefully everyone can and will receive their COVID-19 vaccine (see Catherine Stack's opinion piece on the vaccine in the Being Well section of this issue), and we'll be visiting loved ones in person, going to shows and concerts, and hugging people before too long.

About that in-person part...how is your skin looking and feeling?

Months of being forced to stay indoors with the heat on may have your complexion looking less than dewy. It's not vanity to care for our skin; as our largest organ, it plays a vital part in the health of our entire system. Keeping your skin hydrated and nourished, and exposing it to

After his own experiences with cancer, Buchholtz became a volunteer, mentor, and coach for marathoners through the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. He helps train runners for three to four months prior to each event on a weekly basis, occasionally with multiple sessions per week.

Buchholtz is also actively involved with the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, American Red Cross, and raises money for the cure for blood cancer, which took his father from him ten years ago.

He lives his life motto through his actions: “Wear it out before it rusts out!” FY

A

fter three bouts of cancer and a battle with COVID-19, athlete Gerald “Gerry” Buchholtz remains positive and active, serving as a role model in the community.

“I think I hold a record for being a three-time cancer survivor in ten years,” says Buchholtz.

Diagnosed with kidney cancer in his fifties, Buchholtz underwent surgery to remove his tumor. Three years later, the cancer returned resulting in another surgery. Soon after, Buchholtz was faced with skin cancer; doctors had to remove a chunk of his leg in order to stop the spread.

Despite his battles, Buchholtz says, “COVID was tougher than the three cancers were.”

Tacked on to being an asthmatic,

hypertensive, and a cancer survivor, he was diagnosed with COVID-19 in March 2020, before much information was available. He explained how uncomfortable the test was, joking that it goes, “up your nose, past your brain, and out the top of your head!”

Although he was able to stay out of the hospital, Buchholtz lost 12 pounds and still feels side effects from the virus.

Despite all of the chaos surrounding his health, the avid golfer and runner says, “If you’re in good shape, you can fight things better, [and] you can

recover quicker.” Active in sports since age eight, Buchholtz was introduced to hockey later in life, at age 25, by his younger brother. He continues to play, 40 years later, multiple times a week in what he dubs a “geriatric hockey league,” with his friends, claiming that at 65, he is in the middle age range of those who participate.

Buchholtz is also a devout runner who has completed 21 marathons and well over 100 half-marathons, which he proudly still participates in. When the pandemic canceled a marathon he was to participate in at Virginia Beach,

ucculents are becoming a national gardening trend. It's about time, I say. I grimace as I think about the rather large pot of aloe that I neglected to bring inside this past autumn. It turned to mush near the front door.

Let's back up a minute. What's a succulent? You’ll know one when you see one because succulents are all fleshy and filled with water.

Examples include haworthia, stonecrop, jade plants, aloe, and cactus plants. Keep in mind that succulents are really desert survivors.

where other plants would wither and die. Succulents succeed by storing water and food (nutrients, really) not only in their roots but also in their leaves and stems. They carry on their respiration (changing food into carbon dioxide and water and releasing energy) only at night. Succulents also take in the water they need for survival at

nighttime as well. Making use of this information can help us raise healthy succulent plants.

Begin with the soil. A welldrained soilless medium containing perlite is recommended in a 70-30 ratio. Products made especially for succulents are widely available, so you don't have to make your own mix.

Pay attention to the shallow root systems of most succulents.

If you are transplanting a jade tree, (Crassula) for example, into a larger container, be aware that needs more room horizontally (across the pot) than vertically. Too deep a pot may lead to root rot and/or sour soil.

This leads to a slowdown in the growth of the entire plant. When you purchase a succulent, pay attention to the way it is planted before considering transplanting it into a new pot.

Don't over water. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering. Water only at night when the plant will absorb the water. I bet you never heard that before!

Be patient! Many succulents are slow growers.

Don't neglect fertilization of your potted succulents. Small amounts of nitrogen (N) and

potassium (K) will help your succulents thrive. Be careful not to add too much potassium because it can cause plant damage. Keep it simple. Buy a fertilizer especially made for succulents and follow the directions.

Creating Meaning in Every Moment...

Pay attention to the light needs of your succulents. Most need full sun. But some, such as Nematanthus, bromeliads, and even some aloes do better in partial shade. Read the directions that come with your plant or do some research.

s editor of Forever Young, I get a lot of story pitches from PR companies looking to promote products. Since I had planned a skincare feature for March, I decided to try some out myself and ordered a bunch of samples over the summer and fall. Below are my reviews of some products received. Results may vary.

MagicMinerals Airbrush Deluxe Set ($59) jeromealexander.com Jerome Alexander, the “Man Behind the Makeup,” has been teaching women how to be their own makeup artists for over 50 years. Included in this set are a primer, foundation, setting spray, and two incredibly soft and thick angled kabuki brushes; a large brush for applying product over the broad areas of the face, and a smaller-headed brush for crevices and contouring.

The LiquidSilk Primer is a fine, colorless mist that smells clean and slightly floral. It provides a slightly textured glow to your skin. The mineral powder AirBrush Foundation is applied, like the primer, by spraying it onto the large brush and buffing it into your skin. This foundation is versatile because it’s buildable; use a small amount to even out your skin or apply more to build coverage. After your foundation is set, apply any other makeup, then finish with the AirFinish Setting Spray to hold and enhance the foundation.

Pros: It covers beautifully with no streaks, has a nice, light scent, and feels weightless and non-greasy on your skin. The brushes are good quality, super soft, and can be used for other products if cleaned between uses.

The formula contains a “proprietary blend of active skincare ingredients including hyaluronic acid, argireline and matrixyl 3000.” No animal testing is performed on any of their products.

Cons: The colored foundation mist can be messy, so spray it on the brush over a sink or garbage can. The particulates made me sneeze.

Previse Zero Fragrance Skincare ($22-$81) previsecare.com Previse’s guide words are vegan, sustainable, plant-based, and dermatology. The company uses the science of organic botanicals, peptides, and vitamin-based skincare to keep your body’s largest organ, your skin, “healthy, resilient, and glowing through the power of exceptional plant-based products.”

I was sent several Previse products,

This skincare is cruelty-free and vegan, in addition to being fragrance-free and tailored to provide care for all skin types. Piperberry Adaptogens Superfruits Moisturizer $24, piperberry.com Piperberry, a plant-based, vegan skincare company, uses the latest science and the most natural ingredients possible. Their products are superfoods-based, packed with antioxidant-rich ingredients that are easily and readily absorbed into your skin, and created sustainably.

This formula contains anti-aging ingredients like sea buckthorn, licorice root, and bayberry to boost collagen production and “fight against free radicals.” This scent-free, silky, rich moisturizer reduces redness, hydrates, and improves skin tone and can function as a moisturizer and primer in one (as most moisturizer can). I used this before bed and woke up to noticeably more evenly-toned skin.

Previse skincare products

including Previse stretchmark cream, cleanser, serum, body oil, and moisturizer foam. The cleanser lasts forever, a teeny bit is enough to cleanse your face and neck and leave skin squeaky clean. I liked the serum, which felt smooth and light—I don’t know if it improved my skin, but I figured it couldn’t hurt; I used it under moisturizer. The foam moisturizer was a bit too light for me. I’m noticing that after turning fifty, my skin is dryer.

Full disclosure, I keep the stretchmark cream on my desk and use it as a hand moisturizer. It’s light and doesn’t get my keyboard all greasy.

My skin can be sensitive, and heavy fragrances and oils sometimes irritate it, so these light, fragrance-

free skincare products work well for me. Or did. My teenage son took them over when he discovered they are great for skin that tends to break

A

ttention on the benefits of products containing CBD is growing stronger every day. With more and more states legalizing the use of recreational and medicinal marijuana, stigma that may have been attached to using cannabis products is going up in smoke. I wanted to know what all the buzz was about, so I tried several skincare samples with CBD and hemp as active ingredients.

These products do not contain the chemical THC that’s responsible for the high associated with eating, smoking, or vaping marijuana, but do contain cannabinoids, full spectrum hemp extract, and other parts of the cannabis plant.

Mary Jane on Main Street ($9-$54 for individual products) maryjaneonmainstreet.com This was one of my favorite product lines I sampled. The company’s founder Jeanette Wolfe, a visionary entrepreneur and Naturopathic Doctor (and native of Dolgeville, New York), reached out to share her unique body care products from Mary Jane on Main Street.

MJOMS products are geared toward holistic health of body, mind, and spirit and were designed to help keep the vagus nerve healthy in order to maintain total body health. Historically cited as the pneumogastric nerve, the vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve and interfaces with the parasympathetic control of the heart, lungs, and digestive tract.

Users are encouraged to practice mindful self-care with these products to nourish the nervous system through the largest organ 12

of absorption you have: your skin.

This family business, or “farm’acy,” focuses on cultivating care for stress-related disease using natural ingredients focused on hemp and using “ancient preparatory methods combined with the harmonic science of bio resonance.” Hemp oil activates your body’s CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Product reviews Gold Standard Gemstone soap, containing essential oils of litsea cubeba and rosemary, and a real tiger’s eye gemstone in a glycerin base, cleanses and nourishes at once. It has a light, lemony scent and is very gentle and can be used on face and body.

Petrichor Glacial Facial is essentially a clay mask. Its purpose is to gently “detox and establish a fortified face forward approach to navigating your days.” It can be used to help refine pores, prevent breakouts, and calm eczema and psoriasis. My sample was small and may have dried out, but it felt a bit grainy. It dried quickly after applying a thin layer and was easy to rinse off. My skin felt tauter and clean afterward, but not overly dried out.

Mary Jane on Main Street CBD products

FEATURE cooling effect, while CBD provides longer lasting treatment of sore spots. I use it on my lower back after sitting all day, and I can feel it working right away. The smell does not linger too long, and the lotion did not stain my clothes.

Maybe it’s my imagination, but I also felt calmer and more peaceful after using it.

strengths—300 mg, 750 mg, 1,500 mg and 4,500 mg CBD. The 4,500 mg strength product is great for people who are suffering from a major injury or from chronic pain and is available in both roll-on and pump packaging. Gold Standard Spritz. I used this before moisturizing and anytime I wanted a little refreshing lift. The spritz smells a little citrusy, a little earthy, and is made with frankincense, myrrh, lemon, golden turmeric, clove bud, orange floral water, and witch hazel. I may be addicted to it.

Hemp Palo Santo Roll-on. The earthy-funky smell takes a little getting used to, but I roll this oil on my knees and the bottoms of my feet when they feel sore, and it really helps ease aches and pains.

Ingredients include notes of Palo Santo in a base of hempseed oil and chrysocolla chips to help boost immunity and ease anxiety and tension.

The company is scheduled to be featured on As Seen On TV and Shark Tank this spring and has new digital support (Daily Synch Ups: daily text affirmations, audios, videos) to coordinate with subscription products this

CBD Living Freeze ($30) cbdliving.com Freeze is a CBD therapy gel used topically to treat sore and inflamed muscles. The non-sticky formula smells like a mix of IcyHot and Vicks VapoRub with a note of alcohol. Ingredients include broad spectrum nano hemp extract and natural pain relief heavy-hitters menthol, aloe, eucalyptus, arnica, and passion fruit. Menthol creates a cooling effect, while the CBD penetrates the skin for sustained relief. This product is non-GMO, vegan, and manufactured using organic hemp grown on statelicensed farms in Oregon and Colorado, and is 100 percent THC-free.

Health Screenings

For women: Cervical cancer and HPV screenings call for a Pap test every three years, or an HPV test every five years up to age 65. Women between 65 and 70 who have had three normal tests within the past 10 years can stop having Pap tests.

Mammograms should be performed annually between ages 50 and 74. Testing for women 75 and older is recommended every two years. Yearly breast exams and regular self-exams can help detect cancer in its early stages.

Bone density scans of the hip and spine should be performed at age 60 for at-risk women and at 65 and older for all women. Women age 50 and older who have broken a bone at some point should also undergo a scan.

Full hormone profiles can be beneficial for women in perimenopause or menopause, when sudden or drastic hormone fluctuations can occur.

I

t goes without saying we are suffering from COVID-19 fatigue. Along with plans, celebrations, and vacations that have been canceled or postponed, the CDC reports concerns about the virus have caused four in 10 adults to delay or cancel routine health visits.

As March is National Colorectal Cancer Month, we might use this as a prompt to think about what screenings we and our loved ones should have. Not only should we be looking out for our own health, but we may need to remind our spouses, partners, and other family members how important it is to take care of themselves.

Health checks for everyone: Blood pressure should be checked at least every two years in adults 50 and older.

Bloodwork should be performed regularly to evaluate your overall health and how well your organs are working.

Colon cancer screening is recommended every five to 10 years

for everyone from age 45 to 75. While colonoscopy is most frequently recommended, ask your doctor what other options are available.

Dental exams and teeth cleaning are recommended twice a year.

Eye exams are essential, especially after age 50. Routine eye care can help you get ahead of any changes in your vision.

Hearing screenings for adults should be done at least every decade through age 50 and at three-year intervals thereafter.

Lung cancer screenings are recommended for anyone 55 and older who has a history of heavy smoking and currently smokes or has quit within 15 years.

Skin and mole checks are important, particularly after age 50.

Have an annual head-to-toe exam to check out suspicious freckles or moles.

Depression and mental health issues are common and can be serious issues if untreated. All individuals older than age 60 should be screened periodically.

Early memory screening is beneficial for those who have experienced age-related memory loss or are 65 or older.

Vaccines: along with a Covid-19 vaccine, ask your doctor about vaccines for influenza, pneumonia, shingles, TDAP, and a TD booster.

For men: Regular prostate exams and PSA blood tests should start at age 50.

Earlier testing is recommended for African Americans, or if you have a close relative with prostate cancer.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm affects men much more than women. A one-time screening with ultrasound should be performed if you are 65 to 75 and have ever smoked.

Note that these are just guidelines.

Depending on your health history, you may need additional tests after age 50. It’s important to talk to your primary care provider about what you need to maintain your health as you age.

GENEALOGY Ancestry.com. The “World” subscription at Ancestry includes an Ireland-specific collection of about 40 million records. Although smaller than Findmypast.com, it includes less widely available resources such as the Famine Relief Commission papers.

A recent addition is an indexed collection of Roman Catholic parish registers from 73 Irish parishes dating back to 1763.

Irish Genealogy. Irishgenealogy. ie/en is a free database holding nearly 3 million transcriptions of pre-20th century church records of baptisms, marriages, and burials for selected Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic parishes. You’ll find the records are focused in counties Kerry, Cork, and Carlow, as well as the city of Dublin.

Roots Ireland. RootsIreland.ie is best known for its church records of mixed denominations and offers more than 20 million record transcriptions from 34 county genealogy centers in Ireland. A subscription is required, but 24 hour and 1-month options are available.

Findmypast.com. A subscriptionbased site that contains the largest collection of Irish records online, about 140 million. The “Ultimate” subscription includes more than 200 Irish newspapers dating back to the 1700s. If you’ve ever researched your family in the newspaper, you know it’s bound to add color to your tree!

Opinion: The COVID-19 Vaccination

’m not pulling up data (because at this early stage it is not well supported).

I’m not going to discuss politics. I’m just here to give you my opinion at a gut level (which has yet to fail me in my 55 years on this planet). I’m not here to sway your decision, but more to make you comfortable if you choose to vaccinate.

I am honestly shocked at the numbers of healthcare workers who, by choice, have not been vaccinated as of yet. I will say, however, that most in direct contact with COVID patients have been vaccinated or have at least had COVID and do have antibodies.

A local nursing home (that currently is my dad’s home), has reported more employee positive cases in the past few weeks than it has for previous months. I am writing this in late January 2021, when all staff and employees have been eligible for the vaccine. Were they offered it? Did they not receive it? Did they decline? What I thought would be my ticket to finally hug my dad is now just a sticker on my hospital ID badge. I’m vaccinated and he’s vaccinated, a no-brainer when it comes to getting things back to normal, or so I thought.

My reason for accepting the

COVID-19 vaccination was simple… The reason this current vaccine needs to be deep frozen is due to the lack of preservatives. This is the main reason people avoid or fear vaccines in the first place. The fact that this vaccine had very little preservative and was specific to the disease at hand was the reason I was OK with it. For once, my gut feeling told me that this was OK. I trust my body and my immune system.

There are strong and heated arguments on both sides of the equation. I tend to stay as neutral as I can in order to listen and trust my gut instincts. Fear will never steer you to the right answer. I chose to take this vaccine as for once it is specific to an illness and not someone’s best guess. I will not fight anyone on this issue—in this beautiful thing called life, we are free to choose or decline, and I refuse to be guided by fear or popular vote.

I chose this vaccine in order to be able to hug my dad once again. He is the best hugger and I really need to see him again, and I fear his time is running out. I chose this vaccine so that I may be once again free to roam the world to see its beauty.
