Just in time for (we hope) warmer weather, gardening expert Carol Ann Harlos shares her passion and advice on gardening best practices. (Pro tip: Worry less about clean up and spend more time enjoying your garden as it is in the moment.)

Many of us are strong advocates of pesticide- and chemical-free gardening and yard maintenance, so we've also included a story loaded with tips on how to get rid of those stubborn undesirables (goutweed, anyone?) without hurting the environment.

We also believe in low-cost and stress-free staycations and exciting daytrips. In this issue, explore the wonders of nearby Corning, New York. The glass museum is, of course, magnificent and vast, but take a trip into the hip, charming town to really fill out the experience. And, even closer, check out Silo City with an Explore Buffalo tour. You'll be amazed by its history and Buffalo's role in building this country.

Yoga for Seniors

T

he practice of yoga has been around for more than 5,000 years and is believed to be one of the earliest forms of exercise.

At its roots, yoga (meaning “union” in Sanskrit) is meant to help practitioners find both inner peace and physical strength.

Yoga began gaining popularity in America in the 1950s. Today, it is estimated that at least 36 million Americans practice it.

Jennifer Johnson, health promotion coordinator for BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York’s Health Care Services, believes yoga can help older adults stay limber and reduce pain. She says, “Any kind of physical activity will be beneficial to older adults. It helps with a few things, such as arthritis or some sorts of chronic pain.” Because yoga can be a gentle physical activity, it is easy on joints and can improve flexibility and range of motion. It is not high impact like dance or aerobics.

Johnson says it is part of her responsibility to get our senior population active and involved in more physical activity. “We encourage 6

individuals to get active and healthy and try something new. Little steps add up and can affect someone’s health. Little steps make a big difference.”

She adds, “Yoga is beneficial to older adults. It helps improve strength and balance and helps prevent falls.

One out of three adults over age 65 fall each year.” Other benefits of yoga include better sleep and the possibility of lowering blood pressure.

Johnson recommends that anyone who does not exercise regularly should consult with his or her doctor before beginning a yoga practice, especially if they have osteoporosis. “Get the OK before starting, because of the twisting movements,” Johnson says.

You may also need to wait a certain amount of time if you have had any kind of medical procedure or surgery.

Art of Yoga The Albright-Knox Art Gallery has joined other forward-thinking cultural spaces in offering yoga classes.

BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York is sponsoring a series led by local yogi Steve Procknal and his fellow instructors at Power Yoga Buffalo. Practitioners of all ages and abilities are welcome to come to the museum for Art of Yoga.

Seniors may want to start with gentle yoga. Johnson says this is a “great opportunity for someone to try yoga in a unique environment.” It is designed for older adults who will be comfortable knowing they can try something designed for them. “People

may feel intimidated by going into a yoga studio. This is a great way to try something new without making a big commitment.” There is no experience required; instructors will help.

Gentle Yoga for Seniors is being offered the third Tuesday of every month at 3 p.m. The cost is $10.

Members of BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, as well as Albright-Knox members, can present their member IDs for a $5 discount.

Sessions are free. The library also offers Chair Yoga on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. and Fridays at noon. This is gentle yoga for people with physical limitations.

It is limited to 12 participants, and the suggested donation is $2 to $5 per session.

Fresh – from a Can!

A

lthough the snow may finally be done, come May, summer’s bounty of produce is not yet in full swing, which can make it difficult to find inspiration for something fresh tasting and delicious. While people often pass over foods preserved in a lowly can, you can get quite a nice variety of staples on which to base recipes full of flavor. Forget over-salted or bland dishes; I have a couple of recipes based on canned goods that will excite your taste buds.

Enter canned tomatoes, which I originally started developing as a soup as a side for sandwiches, but actually hit upon a recipe good enough to be the star of the show. I’ve included directions for those nifty highspeed blenders that seem ubiquitous these days, as well as classic stovetop directions.

In the second recipe, I use canned sweetened condensed milk a bit differently, for a play on Indian halwa, to create a loose, sweet side that makes for a semi-healthy treat for lunch. To give you an idea, it’s replaced my usual fruit cup that I have with lunch. As background, the concept of Indian-style fruit or vegetable-based halwa was introduced to me by a friend when I was searching for something that I could serve cold-to-room temperature for a group of health conscious friends.

It sounds odd when one expects sweetened condensed milk for rich, super-sweet desserts like fudge and German chocolate frosting, but give it a shot! You might even have all of the ingredients on hand.

Mega-Flavorful Tomato Soup Yield: 4 to 6 servings Ingredients 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 small onion, diced 29 oz. can whole peeled tomatoes, undrained 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth

¼ cup sundried tomatoes (preferably from a jar packed in oil, as they are softer. Drain before using).

1 head roasted garlic* 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes, drained ½ teaspoon ground black pepper Salt, to taste Directions Heat the olive oil over medium heat (use a small skillet if you are using the high speed blender directions, use a medium saucepan if cooking the soup in its entirety on the stovetop). Add the onion and sauté until the onion is translucent and just beginning to brown on the edges, about 4 to 6 minutes.

For the high-speed blender preparation: remove the onions from the heat. To the bowl of your blender, add the onions, can of whole tomatoes, broth, sundried tomatoes, and roasted garlic. Turn the blender on the lowest speed and slowly increase it to maximum speed. Add additional broth if the mixture is too thick to blend. Allow the mixture to blend on the highest setting for 3 to 5 minutes.

Add the pepper, diced tomatoes, and salt. Gently pulse to combine, leaving chunks of tomatoes. Serve.

On the stovetop: while the onions are cooking, finely dice the sundried tomatoes, and mash the roasted garlic with a fork or the side of a knife then set aside. When the onions have completed cooking, add the can of whole tomatoes, broth, sundried tomatoes, and roasted garlic to the saucepan. Raise the heat to medium high and bring to a boil, stirring and mashing the whole tomatoes with your spoon. Once the mixture is boiling, add the pepper, diced tomatoes, and salt. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Serve.

*Cut the top off of a head of garlic. Wrap tightly in foil, roast in the oven at 350 degrees for an hour. Allow to cool, squeeze soft cloves from their papery skins. Or, take a shortcut and purchase pre-roasted garlic cloves from your grocery store’s olive bar – 10 cloves equals a head of garlic.

Carrot Halwa Yield: 4 servings Ingredients 1.5 tablespoons butter 2 ¼ cup grated carrots* ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 tablespoons golden raisins, chopped 3 tablespoons roasted unsalted cashews, chopped Directions Over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add the carrots and cook, stirring occasionally, until the carrots are softened, about 8 minutes. Be sure to stop cooking the carrots before they begin to dull and brown too much; you want your finished dish to be bright and colorful.

Turn the heat down to low. Add the milk, spices, raisins, and cashews. Stir to combine and heat through, about 3-4 minutes (mixture will not thicken).

Pour mixture into a dish, chill and serve. *Option to use a 10 oz. bag of matchstick carrots, dicing fine, to cut down on prep work. A 10 oz. bag of matchstick carrots will yield 2 ¼ cups diced fine enough for this recipe. Catching up with ex-pat Diane Curley and bats at TOY

“I’m still working on my elevator pitch for this play,” Curley says.

“When you’re in it, every moment is so important! Overall, this is a play about love. The complications and complexities of relationships, and the outrageous, misguided, and risky lengths we will go to in order to get it—and keep it.”

It was Pezzimenti who called Curley more than a year ago with the idea to lure her back with a juicy role in a romantic comedy. “He had me hooked there,” Curley laughs, “but, honestly, everything aligned perfectly: Fortune directing, the outstanding cast, the fun and compelling story, working at the Irish, coming back to see friends, and the potential of winter nearing its end in Buffalo; I’m a winter wimp.”

Curley also credits and thanks a large support team of friends and co-workers. “I currently work as part of National Geographic Live, which puts explorers, photographers, and scientists on stage to share their incredible stories and discoveries; it is actually currently presented at Kleinhans!” she says. “I am so lucky that I can do my job remotely during the show, and my team rallied around me to make it possible. I also have friends who are allowing me to live in their guest room, and another back in Washington, DC, watching my apartment.”

DC has also provided new acting opportunities for Curley, who spent the first six months doing lots of digital and television documentaries, as well as background work. “My first gig was as an extra on House of Cards,” she shares. “I spent the day at a Frank Underwood rally with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. I remember thinking, ‘I’ve shared the screen with Princess Buttercup. I can die happy now.’ In VEEP, my group scene was with Hugh Laurie, and I have to say he is even nicer and funnier than you would imagine. Performance-wise, I have done a lot of Shakespeare; I had the pleasure of playing Desdemona in Othello, and Brutus in a very avantgarde production of Coriolanus.”

The change of city has been exciting for Curley, and she’s been enjoying the abundance of activity. “The museums are some of the best in the nation, and they’re free,” she marvels.

“The majority of DC is a national park; I often just walk around the city and discover new monuments or parks or museums. It’s teeming with culture, theater, music, art, and green space. It is a very bright city— and it’s a wonderful rule that limits the heights of buildings—and pretty mild seasons with lots of sunshine.

Again, I’m a winter wimp. And yes, politics, but my mother taught me not to get into that.”

Of course, the love for her new home doesn’t preclude missing Buffalo, and Curley confesses to missing everything from the farmers market to Spot Coffee to the lack of traffic to her theater community.

“It’s been hard being away from my home in Washington, DC, but the support and love of my friends and the theater community has made it a warm and welcoming experience,” she says. “The first day of rehearsal was like the first day of school after summer vacation. I carefully picked out my outfit. No, honestly, it felt like coming home. It was exciting and warm, familiar, and new all at the same time. After being gone, I can truly appreciate how special the

ARTS Buffalo theater scene is. And this is a treasure of a cast, each talented, kind, and with a fabulous sense of humor—we laugh constantly. I hope this doesn’t embarrass Adriano, but a number of years ago, we made a list of plays we would like to do together, so playing opposite each other in The Awful Truth is fulfilling a wish from long ago.”

Though Curley will never say never about moving back, for now, she’s just enjoying the time with The Awful Truth. “I love how quickly this play turns on a dime from honest vulnerability to farcical comedy,” she says. “The struggles of each of the characters are relatable, and it allows us all to laugh at ourselves in love. It’s pretty funny when you think about the things we do when we’re twitterpated.

If you like classic romantic comedies, like The Philadelphia Story or Noel Coward, you will like this play.”

Stellaluna Theatre of Youth

By Janell Cannon, adapted by Saskia Janse, music by Guus Ponsioen Director: Kyle LoConti Cast: Leah Berst, Kelly Copps, Arian Lee Dandes, Sabrina Kahwaty and Alexandria Watts If the grandchildren are getting antsy for the end of the school year, treat them to Stellaluna, the stage version of the beloved 1994 Janell Cannon (a self-proclaimed bat lover) book. When Stellaluna is accidentally separated from her mother and finds herself in a bird’s nest, the mother bird agrees to raise Stellaluna as long as she acts like a bird.

That means a diet of worms and insects, and no sleeping at night, no hanging upside down! Stellaluna complies to keep the peace, but when she’s reunited with her mother, she’s eager to show her bird friends how to be bats! Can their friendship survive these differences?

“We have worked very deliberately to bring this lovely book to life on our

stage, from designing an environment that echoes the palette and style of the illustrations, to utilizing elements of the book’s text to inform acting and puppetry choices,” says director Kyle LoConti. “Whether children know this award-winning book or not, they will be in for a real treat.”

Onstage, Cannon’s book is transformed into a puppet musical, originally developed by Saskia Janse in partnership among Plays for Young Audiences, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis. “In many ways, [the puppets] give us great freedom,” says LoConti. “Puppets can do things that we humans cannot, like flying without lots of tech help.”

The show’s seven puppets were created by Adam Kreutinger (you’ve seen his work earlier in the Theatre of Youth season, in Bunnicula), who shared his expertise to teach the cast how to operate the puppets. He also suggested puppeteering techniques that might best tell certain parts of the story.

“The puppets are beautiful, and we

have all fallen in love with them,” says LoConti. “It has been amazing to watch how quickly the actors have given the puppets individual personalities.”

Stellaluna is intended for ages four and up, and LoConti notes that it uses many of the same tactics as movies and television shows to keep children engaged for about an hour: it tells a story and gives the kids characters to care about. “Keep the pace moving and the storytelling honest, and even a very young audience will be engaged,” LoConti promises. “The key discovery for Stellaluna and her little bird friends has to do with acceptance and being comfortable with who you are. Near the end of their adventure, they wonder at their friendship and how they can be so different and feel so alike. Not bad lessons for any of us.”

What to Watch and Where to Find it

n these fractured times, documentary cinema is more vital and more important than ever. It is also easier to find and watch these films than any time in motion picture history.

In short, it’s a great time to be a fan of documentaries. Here’s some ways to get started.

Visit Toronto for Hot Docs Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival, started on April 26 and runs until May 6. Held annually in Toronto, the festival is a must-attend for anyone interested in nonfiction film. The lineup is always stunningly long and wonderfully diverse.

This year features a special program called The Changing Face of Europe, a showcase of new documentaries examining the current cultural, geographic, economic, and political factors affecting Europe. Visit hotdocs. ca for a rundown and schedules, as well as ticket info.

And visit the Toronto Tourism site, seetorontonow.com, for additional ideas on what to do during your visit.

Keep an eye out for special screenings One example worth noting is a screening of Vincent van Gogh: A New Way of Seeing at 7:30 p.m. on May 24 at the Fredonia Opera House (9 Church Street in Fredonia).

The Opera House regularly screens fascinating docs such as Van Gogh, which showcases the artist’s work and 10

A very different type of doc is Godspeed: The Race Across America, which screens at 7 p.m. on May 22 at the Elmwood Regal Center (2001 Elmwood Avenue) and Transit Center (6707 Transit Road in Williamsville). The film tells the story of a cycling team competing in a grueling seven-day, 3,000-mile race.

This might seem like a lot to ponder, so I asked Jordan Smith, a film critic, documentary fan, and director of the aforementioned Cultivate Cinema

Circle, for some tips on diving in, along with a few recommendations.

Jordan, you write about documentaries often as a critic, you program them through Cultivate Cinema Circle, and you are also a fan.

Where do you recommend someone without much experience watching documentaries begin?

Never before have people had so much easy access to docs, so reading up a bit and diving in now is easy.

Those looking for the best in the history of cinema can’t go wrong by watching everything on Sight & Sound’s “50 greatest,” or if you are looking for newer docs, Nonfics publishes two monthly lists of “100 must sees” currently streaming on Netflix and Amazon, along with coverage of new theatrical releases and current festival favorites.

And don’t shy away from PBS’s long running POV series, which always has a really solid lineup each year (and makes their films available to stream online after broadcast for free).

Can you recommend a few recent documentaries worth watching?

This is tough. Last year I watched 132 documentaries. Here are a few docs I’ve seen recently that I loved:

Bill Morrison’s Dawson City: Frozen Time (available on iTunes/Amazon) Jenny Gage’s All This Panic (available on iTunes/Amazon or free on Kanopy) Who are your personal favorite documentary filmmakers?

There are some obvious ones for me: Jeff Feuerzeig, the director of The Devil and Daniel Johnston and Author: The JT LeRoy Story; Agnès Varda, the director of Mur Murs, The Gleaners and I, Faces Places, and so many others; the Ross Brothers, the directors of Tchopitoulas, Western, and Contemporary Color; and the Maysles Brothers, directors of Salesman, Gimme Shelter, and tons of others.

Do you see Buffalo as a city that supports this type of film?

Unfortunately, in pretty much any mid-market city like Buffalo, the opportunity to see documentaries on the big screen like they were intended to be seen is few and far between. And that’s not even taking into account that many of the best documentaries are being funded by or bought outright by major streaming services like Netflix, skipping theatrical releases entirely outside of a brief stint on the festival circuit.

That’s one of the many reasons that with Cultivate Cinema Circle, we’ve made screening documentaries in a communal setting one of our priorities.

Memories of Music at Crystal Beach Amusement Park

ummer is around the corner, the days are getting warmer, and thoughts turn to summers past. One of the memories that people often talk about is Crystal Beach.

Crystal Beach is remembered by most people for its amusement park rides and the white sandy beach. However, it was important for introducing music to Western New York and the Niagara Peninsula. In fact, the Crystal Beach Ballroom had the largest dance floor in North America.

The original dance hall was called the Crystal Beach Dance Pavilion and was located where the Giant Coaster was later built. It began presenting bands in 1891 and featured the 74th Regiment Band, which was considered the most popular area brass band of the 1890s and early twentieth century.

This band played an important role in the development of music at Crystal Beach.

Justus Miller was the director of the 74th Regiment Band, which, over time, developed into the thirty-five-member Miller Brass Band that performed at Crystal Beach through 1916. In 1918, the 74th’s percussionist, Fred Asmus, formed the seventeen-piece Crystal Beach Orchestra, which appeared at the park through 1924. It was a fivepiece version of that orchestra that began entertaining on the Lake Erie Excursion Company steamers The Americana and Canadiana.

During the summer of 1923, the Southbound Shufflers performed on the Canadiana. Their piano player/ vocalist was Buffalo’s Hyman Arluck.

He changed his name to Harold Arlen and became one of America’s most prolific songwriters, including composing The Wizard of Oz soundtrack, with the Oscar winning “Over the Rainbow.” Arlen’s band had

the distinction of being the last house band at the Dance Pavilion in 1924 and first house band at the Crystal Ballroom in 1925.

When George Hall Sr. purchased the Crystal Beach Amusement Park and Steamers in 1924 he was responsible for expanding the park, building the ballroom, and adding the Cyclone Roller Coaster. The Ballroom held 1,500 dancers and, at the end of each song, ushers with long ropes herded the dancers off the floor. The couples paid ten cents a dance, which could generate $12,000 during a fourevening dance. Canadian Law required that an equal size Canadian Band be hired if a band from the US was performing, so continuous music was provided by Canadian and American bands.

Canadian Bands included the Bert Niosi, Maynard Ferguson, and Benny Louis Big Bands. Starting in 1935, the featured US band was the Harold Austin Orchestra, which played at the ballroom and on the Canadiana during the summer, and appeared at The Dellwood Ballroom in Buffalo during the other seasons. Austin was responsible for introducing Big Band Music to the area by presenting all the most popular big bands, including the Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, and other bands.

These national bands first appeared at Crystal Beach and later played at The Dellwood, along with other Buffalo dance halls and theaters.

Austin also entertained on the daily Crystal Beach Boat trip to Crystal Beach and was featured on Sunday

Dance Cruises. The final season of the Crystal Beach Boat was 1956 and on the final approach to the Buffalo docks, Harold Austin played “Taps” as the last song.

When the popularity of big band music waned during the 1950s, polka bands were introduced to the Crystal Beach Ballroom. The national and regionally popular polka bands included Frank Wojnarowski, Frankie Yankovic, Joe Macielag’s Pic-APolka Orchestra, Walt Jaworski, and the Eddie Olinski Orchestra. These bands continued to appear at the park through the summer of 1967, when the ballroom was replaced by a roller rink.

Music returned to the Crystal Beach Ballroom in 1984 but the size of the dance floor was reduced because of a fire in 1974. The first band to perform was Buffalo Swing, the big band that was featured in the movie The Natural, that was filmed in Buffalo. They released the album Ten Cents a Dance to commemorate the former dance policy at the Crystal Beach Ballroom.

Buffalo Swing and Maynard Ferguson also performed at Save the Canadiana fundraisers to preserve the former Crystal Beach Boat.

After the Crystal Beach Ballroom reopened in 1984, in addition to big bands, it also featured local and nationally touring polka, country, and, finally, rock bands. These various styles of groups continued until the park closed at the end of the summer of 1989.

It was ironic that the final building at Crystal Beach Amusement Park to be demolished was the ballroom, remaining the final memory of the park’s glorious past. There were many other memorable beach or waterside nightclubs in WNY’s musical past, and we will reminisce about them in a summer issue of Forever Young. oes gardening make you happy? Before we devote ourselves to gardening sustainably, I would like to encourage you first to garden “in the moment.” I worry that too many of us, myself included, think of gardening as an unending list of chores. You need to weed, to prune, to harvest, to mulch, move this plant, etc., etc. This is true only if we aim for perfection— impossibility, even if you have helpers. Let’s think of the garden as encouraging nature in the best possible ways. Let’s take the time to put down our tools and to use our senses, to be in the moment.

What does your garden look like?

Stop looking at the weeds! Stop looking at that overgrown shrub. What do you see? Close your eyes. What do you hear? Birds, bees, lawnmowers, the wind? Touch some of your plants...OK leave the stinging nettle alone. Are the leaves smooth, rough, dry? Close your eyes again. Smell your garden. Do your roses have a fragrance? Can you smell 18

the different mints? The lilac? Do you share your garden? If it were only you in your world, would you still garden?

sometimes? I truly believe that each of us is in a position to make small everyday choices that can help to make the world a better place.

Gardening is, of course, involved.

I doubt that you are surprised. When we garden, our focus is on the leaf, flower, or garden as it is right this very moment. Our senses are engaged with the sights, smells, or even the sounds of

CAROL ANN HARLOS that garden. Your enthusiasm for life is increased. If there is another person to share this moment, all the better.

Gardening gives us so much satisfaction. Readers may remember reading about the first potatoes I grew in a bag. I brought some into the house still dirty (the potatoes and me) to show them to my husband.

No kindergartener bringing home a project from school could have been happier. And, if no one else is present, the gardener is still happy.

Gardening gives one a feeling of some control and purpose. Weeding, pruning, harvesting provide deeply satisfying work, good for the body and the mind. How many times have you decided that today you are going to cut back the elderberry bushes and ended up working on the rose garden or tying the tomato plants to supports as well? At least you didn’t waste your afternoon in a non-productive pursuit, such as a video game.

I understand from reading that cognitive activities (defined by Merriam-Webster as “involving intellectual activity such as thinking and reasoning...”) are said to slow the development of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Gardeners are among the smartest people I know. They are constantly learning something new: about new plants, better ways to improve soil, plant propagation, dealing with unwanted insects, encouraging wanted insects, and more.

We know that gardening is the single best activity to slow or prevent osteoporosis because of all the tugging, digging, yanking, pulling, lifting. It is also good for the heart, because you can exert yourself.

FEATURE I don’t know about you, but gardening keeps me from overeating (I think). Well, I’m not eating when gardening, but I am starving afterward. And ever so happy.

Gardening makes the world a better place, especially gardens that work with nature, not filled with sprays to suppress insects. I would rather have some signs of life! My garden is not perfect. Is yours? My piece of the earth has butterflies, birds, honeybees, solitary bees, bumblebees ... life.

Take a look at the world you see every day. See large expanses of grass? What a waste! Wouldn’t the world be a better happier place if everyone had a garden?

Best practices for gardeners Now, what does that mean? Recently, I asked people who attended one of my gardening talks, “Why do you garden?” The answers included: growing food, enjoyment, being part of the environment, getting in touch with

nature, physical rejuvenation, getting away from it all, mental rejuvenation, adding beauty to the world, satisfying a creative urge, making the world a better place, touching the earth, getting back to basics, and even to outdo another gardener.

The idea of best practices for gardening then may mean different things to different people. But, for each reason given above, there may be a best way to achieve it. One source I checked for the term “best practices” says “...the results... are superior to those achieved by other means.” So what does this mean to you?

This issue of Forever Young magazine is going to take a look at gardening best practices. We want you, the reader, and you, the gardener, whether you garden in pots on your patio or on several acres of land, to achieve the best garden possible.

At the same time, we want you to have the satisfaction of working with the world around you rather than fighting it. We want all of you to have the satisfaction that should come to all gardeners. Are you ready? Here we go...

FEATURE Gardening should be working with, not against nature!

Have you ever seen Mother Nature cleaning up fall gardens, sometimes leaving nary a leaf but cut-off plants surrounded by barren soil? Of course not! Annual plants die at the end of the growing season. Some drop their seeds.

Herbaceous perennials die down to the ground late in the season. Many, such as echinacea, veronica, Joe Pye Weed, and hydrangeas, hold on to their flowers all

winter, providing interest to us, seeds for birds, and homes for overwintering insects. In spring, you can simply chop up the dried plant material and use it for mulch or add it to your compost pile. The nutrients from one season are recycled back into the earth. Talk about sustainability!

Start small.

Trust me on this. A small successful garden is a treasure. If gardening becomes a passion, a larger garden will follow. Starting out too big can lead to frustration if things don’t work out as planned. Have a small success. If you have the space, your gardens will get larger and larger.

I know the moment I became a very serious gardener. I grew tomato plants from seed at a rental property. When our new home was ready for us, I didn’t want to leave the plants, as they were beginning to produce tomatoes! I even contacted the next tenants and told them how to care for and harvest the tomatoes.

Try placing plants that have similar needs close together in your gardens.

You wouldn’t grow a cactus with a tomato plant would you? That would be silly. Try grouping plants that have similar pH needs, watering needs, and pruning needs together. The plants will be happier, and there will be less work for you! Let’s say you have shade.

Garden combinations might include heucheras (coral bells), Tiarella (foam flowers), Astilbes, primroses, and ladies mantle. Full sun combinations might include echinacea, lavender, and lobellia (cardinal flowers).

You may be thinking, how do I decide what to grow? You can go to local nurseries and spend time reading plant labels and making up your own combinations. Ask questions of the staff; they are there to help. You can also access online gardening companies that sell ready-made gardens designed for certain sites for ideas or perhaps for purchase. If your garden combinations don’t work out to your satisfaction, you can move plants next year.

sounds like so much trouble! Think of it as fun, a never-ending learning experience.

Use plants that have interest over several seasons.

An example includes scab-resistant crab apple trees. The spring flowers are stunning. The summer trees provide beauty, interest, and places for birds.

The fall crab apple provides leaf color.

The winter interest is the red fruit.

In early spring, it provides food for birds. Crab apple trees also give shade necessary for shade loving plants.

I also love viburnums. They come in many sizes, have striking colorful flowers, attract birds with their fruit, and have leaves that turn either purple or red. I love Viburnum dilatatum Cardinal Candy™ but there are so many more to try! There is Amelanchier,

a native shrub, which has beautiful whitish flowers in the spring, berries in the summer that feed birds, and orange leaves in the autumn.

A book I suggest on the subject of plants having multiple season interest is Powerhouse Plants by Graham Rice from Timber Press.

Try companion gardening. This really means that one type of plant helps another.

You are probably familiar with the Three Sisters garden practice used by Native Americans. This practice uses three plant layers, for example corn, which gives support, beans, which supply nitrogen, and squash, which shades the soil and keeps in moisture.

You might wish to try basil near your tomato plants. I suggest the book Great Garden Companions by Sally

Other ideas to improve your garden and to reduce waste include making use of scraps from your kitchen as soil additions and keeping a worm bin. Try the book Worms Eat My Garbage by Mary Appelhof.

Think about how you will water your garden.

I always feel bad when I see people who water their gardens every day. It’s not how often you water, but how well.

Longer time is better, as more water goes down to the roots and beyond, leading to stronger plants later on.

Remember the roots go where the water goes. So, if you water down to only one inch, the roots will grow into that one inch and then quickly dry out.

You will need to water again! Ideally, use drip irrigation, because water is not wasted and goes directly to the roots.

Think about what you can live with if you travel or become ill.

I really learned about myself when I had rotator cuff surgery several years ago. I simply could not keep my gardens up to my usual standards. I let one garden go completely...no pruning or weeding, no harvesting. Guess what?

No garden police showed up to say, “Hey, what happened?” The earth still rotated. Life went on. The next year, I had huge weeds to pull out. Being an incurable optimist, I decided they were easier to get rid of than little weeds.

I also found out how well my catnip reseeded. Everywhere!

Lastly, think before you grab that spray.

I never spray my plants for insects or other critters. The closest I come to using a commercial product is using a blood-based product in the spring that deters rabbits and deer from eating my tulips and other spring flowers. I also spread diatomacous earth under the hostas to discourage slugs.

My plants rarely get diseases. My philosophy is, if the plant is sick or not thriving, it is in the wrong place.

I move the plant if it is simply not thriving. If the plant is sick, it’s “hasta la vista, baby!” A garden supports life, so some insect damage is natural. Check

your plants at least weekly. Aphids?

Use a powerful spray of water. Tomato hornworms? Manually remove them or let them mature into sphinx moths.

Next time, examine your tomato plants earlier in the season! From year to year, move vegetables around your garden to conserve soil nutrients, prevent disease, and confuse insects.

Unless you are a professional, gardening is a lifelong interest, not your basis of income. Trust me on this one too, while some people buy jewels and expensive clothes, I just told my husband not to ask me what I paid for the tillandsias that I bought at the Philadelphia Flower Show!

Winning the War on Weeds

rom casual petunia planters to hard-core horticulturalists, all gardeners (including this writer) have had to fight off enemy infiltration—in other words, weeds. It may be tempting for frustrated growers to head to the hardware store and buy every weed-killing product on the shelf, but that isn’t healthy for plants, animals, or humans.

Dr. Jonathan Titus, assistant professor of biology at SUNY Fredonia and a field ecologist, explains that, like beauty, weeds are in the eye of the beholder.

“Remember that a weed is just a plant that someone doesn’t like,” he says. “It may not be a weed to someone

else. Like all environmental issues, it comes down to aesthetic values.”

The real trouble comes when those plants a gardener doesn’t aesthetically value are also invasive and not native.

“The ‘invasive’ part is what’s important,” Titus says. “Those plants take over. Certain plants we do like can be non-native, like marigolds, zinnias, and vegetables—but they’re not invasive.”

Non-native, invasive species, like goutweed, Japanese knotweed, and ground ivy, aren’t eaten by hungry local grazers and spread quicker than good gossip. Left unchecked, they can take over your garden or backyard in a season or two, and are so tough that green methods are the best (and maybe only) option.

“Most commercially available herbicides won’t do the job anyway,” Titus says. “So, you spray these poisons all over your yard, and they leak into

rivers and streams, killing wildlife— and you still have these weeds.”

What is a gardener to do if they have these species or other weeds taking over? If it has a taproot (a long, central root that grows straight down), pulling it is the best battle plan. This is true for dandelions and plantain weeds. But, be careful to get the entire root, or else the weed will grow back. For best results, loosen the soil around the root with a garden fork or another hand tool—like an old screwdriver. Many weeds love

compact soil, so aerating your lawn and garden or adding a bit of sand to your soil can help banish these undesirables.

Weeds with root systems that spread like nets—called rhizomes— creep outward beneath the ground, sending up new shoots as they go.

If you till a patch of goutweed, for example, all you get is more goutweed.

Each cut piece, even one a fraction of an inch long, has everything it needs to resprout. The remedy is the “cover, smother, and hover” method.

FEATURE “Goutweed is a non-native, invasive species that someone first planted on purpose, as an ornamental, like so many of these things,” Titus explains, adding that it’s becoming a real problem in natural areas as well as cultivated landscapes. “You could try pulling goutweed until the end of time, and it wouldn’t do you much good. You need to cover it.”

Eradicating goutweed or another rhizome network from your yard or garden is no easy task, and it’s not for those seeking instant gratification.

“Identify the areas of goutweed, and cover it with several layers of newspaper, tarps, or weed fabric,” says Titus. “It may take a couple of years for the goutweed to really die, and in that time, you have to police the borders. If you see it growing there, pull it out or put down more newspapers.

In order to make use of that space while the goutweed is dying a slow death, put raised beds or planters on top of the tarps or newspaper. It will

make the wait less agonizing, and that area more attractive.

Titus’s suggestions for keeping invasive plant species out of your landscapes: Plant desired flora closer together. You’ll do far less weeding, and use far less mulch, if there’s no room for weeds to sprout up.

Choose native species. Native species are tough, and this is “their turf,” so they keep out non-native invasives. Native species also support local and beneficial insects, birds, and animals. Ask for them at your local nursery.

Recycle raked leaves in the fall by shredding them and using them as mulch in your flowerbeds. It will look just as pretty as store-bought mulch, with the benefits of being free and on site.

Keep lawns healthy. Hardy lawns are more weed resistant, but say no to chemical fertilizers and dyes.

Avoid mowing in extreme heat, and don’t cut grass too short. Water

Silo City

Explore Buffalo Tour

ith more than 100 tour offerings on the May calendar, we’ll narrow the focus this month with a spotlight on Silo City, one of our most popular tour sites. Silo City sits at the crossroads of historical appreciation and artistic experimentation and is a must-see.

Tour the spectacular grain elevator complex weekends in May and Thursday through Sunday in June through October.

Silo City is a collection of four grain elevators (American, Marine A, Perot, and Lake and Rail) built along the Buffalo River as early as 1906. Located off of Ohio Street, the site is part of the Old First Ward community.

Opinions vary on Buffalo’s grain elevators and how they look, but their significance to the history of our city is undeniable. Coupled with the city’s growth following the opening of the Erie Canal, the invention of the grain elevator put Buffalo on the map.

The first elevator sat along the Buffalo River about where Erie Basin Marina is today. It was invented by a local man named Joseph Dart back in 1842. Within fifteen years, about ten large grain elevators lined our bustling harbor.

The Erie Canal revolutionized transportation, and the grain elevator transformed grain storage, shipping, and handling around the world. That may not be a surprise to locals who are familiar with these histories, but, to tourists, it’s stunning. We see a wide variety of visitors at Silo City, from the nearby Rust Belt region to the West Coast, and travelers as far away as New Zealand. That’s all thanks to the unique qualities of the site.

According to Silo City its, “just your average, everyday historic grain elevator complex that doubles as a music venue, theater backdrop, poetry site, and industrial film location in Buffalo, NY.” What makes Silo City so unique is the way it marries the idea of an old industrial complex with something like an artistic and ecological playground. Musicians, poets, fine artists, architects, landscapers, and designers are all welcome to find

their place and experiment with the space. The location is no longer an abandoned industrial site since its 2006 purchase by Rick Smith, the owner of the nearly eighty-yearold family-owned manufacturing company, Rigidized Metals. The site has opened its doors to people of all walks and talents with art popping up all around the complex.

The public is welcome to experience performances and installations along with the incredible history of the buildings and grounds. When guiding visitors through the site, whether we’re giving the grounded tour or our vertical tour (where we take tour-goers to the top of the elevators) it’s important to us to show the greater context for these

industrial powerhouses. How did the machinery work? How did the technology evolve? How did they impact Buffalo and the Western New York region? The tours give a full picture of our industrial heritage with amazing facts along the way.

Did you know that the 1906 section of the American elevator at Silo City can hold 2.25 million bushels of grain which means that section alone holds enough grain to make 101,250,000 boxes of cereal?

Guests can learn more about how grain was transported and unloaded with the revolutionary technology of the grain elevator.

Being inside and next to these structures helps to understand the history and mechanization involved. We hope those who come on our tours are able to engage with its extraordinary past and take a piece of history away with them. FY

Charming Corning

T

he city of Corning (population 11,000) is about 130 miles from Buffalo and offers the charm of a small industrial city on the comeback and a massive and remarkable museum more appropriate for Paris, London, or Silicon Valley.

The Corning Museum of Glass, despite a name suggesting displays of dishware, cuts across the disciplines of history, ancient and contemporary art, technology, design, innovation, fashion, the military, invention, and mankind’s 3,500-year involvement with glass and what to do with it once it’s made. If you are a museumgoer attracted by any of those categories, this should be on your list.

Glass is a part of the human experience, from Fresnel lenses in lighthouses to perfume bottles to the heatproof windows on spacecraft.

Ancient jewelry, castle chandeliers, optical fiber and the stuff currently stacked in your kitchen. This museum, with 45,000 objects, covers it all in comprehensive, exhaustive, and interactive ways, and it is a stunner of a collection. Seriously, if visits to museums are a part of your life, you’ve got to see this place.

The modernist museum sits near the headquarters of what was known as the Corning Glass Works, long the world’s center of glass technology. It opened

in 1951, the centennial anniversary of the company now called Corning Inc. Several expansions later, it is a thorough immersion in what kept the little city on the Chemung River going since 1851, as well as how glass has a part in the development of every civilization on earth.

It offers demonstrations in its “Hot Glass Show” and workshop studios where visitors can attempt glassmaking themselves and return home with a unique handmade souvenir. Celebrated

glassmakers from around the world visit and demonstrate their skills.

Rotating art displays may offer stained glass windows, massive telescope mirrors, or design performances. It is a place for visitors of any age to be inspired and informed. Be aware, though, that a certain amount of walking is involved. The museum is enormous and overflowing with things to observe, and, incidentally, you’re not allowed to sit in artist Shiro Kuramato’s all-glass chair.

A few minutes away by car is the city of Corning, working to maintain that no-pressure vibe evident in formerly bustling factory towns that reposition themselves as high-tech business operations and tourism destinations.

Warehouses and 150-year-old buildings have been repurposed to restaurants, designer fashion stores, wine shops, and craft beer outlets. A small area of downtown known as the Gaffer District is a textbook example of restoring all those brick buildings and putting them to twenty-first-century use. In any season, it is a picturesque little town, with year-round events including the autumn Wineglass Marathon, which starts in the town of Bath and ends on Corning’s Market Street, as well as other museums and sightseeing opportunities. Of particular local pride is the Rockwell Museum, a well-regarded gallery of Western and Native American art and artifacts.

Corning is a great weekend getaway, with that surprising museum and adjacent small-town charm. There are considerably more hotels than a city of its size typically offers, and from Western New York, it’s an all-interstate trip. Eastbound on the I-90, then southbound on the I-390 when your choices are Rochester or Corning, and you’re there within two and a half hours. hen considering the notion of having sex with an ex-spouse or partner, one might wonder why anyone would bother. After all, someone is an “ex” for a reason. Maybe it’s a case of, “can’t live with them; can’t sleep without them.” Or something else may be afoot.

Some couples may be unable to live together in harmony, but the partners still feel a sexual attraction toward each other. In some cases, good sex may have been the glue holding them together, even if nothing else in the relationship was working. And, as the saying goes, everybody has lonely moments.

both getting amorous with your ex and running in the other direction. Let’s see who has what to say about the issue.

Author Tiffany McHugh, writing for Your Tango, says there are valid reasons for doing the deed with one’s former love.

Examine why you broke up. Did she cheat? Was he abusive? These might be good reasons to stay away. But if you are certain you won’t get hurt, either emotionally or physically, it might be OK. You both know the territory, so to speak.

McHugh says, “If you’re one of those people who think [the number of lovers you’ve had] matters, then sleeping with your ex is like multiplying your number by one.” She reminds everyone to be smart and use protection.

thing, or it may have just happened spontaneously. He advises asking yourself, “Is this really a good idea?”

Losing a long-term relationship and winding up alone can be frightening.

It is unlikely that you can move on overnight, so, when an ex calls, it can be easy to run back to a familiar person and situation.

Coster says sex with an ex can complicate matters, “But if you still want to go ahead and do it, then do it.” His feeling is that there is no right or wrong answer; only what you think is right for you.

Before taking the plunge, he suggests you ask yourself a few questions. Why did you break up in the first place? Do you still love your ex, or do you just not want to be alone? Are you using sex to keep the relationship going? Are you OK with the possibility of being one of several partners?

He reminds us that a break-up is meant to dissolve the relationship. Sex may drag things out with your ex and “make it harder to forge new healthy relationships.”

Katy Horwood, another dating and relationship expert, wrote an article called “11 Reasons Why Sex with Your Ex Is a Bad Idea,” which was featured in Metro News.

She agrees that as long as your ex remains in your life, not to mention your bed, the harder it will be to move on to another relationship. Horwood also points out that sex without emotion is difficult, and if your ex broke your heart, it is likely the act will strike an emotional chord.

While she takes a light tone with the subject, she makes valid points. Such as, prepare to be annoyed, like if your ex does not stay the night or call the next day. You may wind up feeling like a booty call. You may also feel confused

as to what is going on, especially if your ex refers to a night of passion as a mistake. Plus, your ex is not likely to suddenly fall in love all over again, if that’s what you were thinking.

If you were the one who did the dumping, you may be simply using your ex for the night. As Horwood asks, “Which is totally fair and exactly what you’d like someone to do to you?”

So, is it yea or nay when it comes to sex with the ex? Only you know for sure. If you can have a fling without stirring up emotions, it might be OK. But then all you may have is sex without love. Attending the small former Catholic High School, Baker Victory in Lackawanna, the hardworking, tenacious athlete and actor began shaping his path down both roads. and gift of communicating easily with anyone led from that random meeting to studying with former Sanford Meisner student and neighborhood playhouse graduates Greg Zittel and Bill Alderson two weeks later. Rossi graduated from the two-year program and then became a member of Actors Equity Association, performing in several off-Broadway plays including A Hatful of Rain, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Private Wars.

In between shows, he continued his studies by attending various classes on cold reading, scene study, and on-camera technique with Arthur Sherman. A product of the Actors Studio, Sherman directed several Broadway productions including, Death of a Salesman starring Dustin Hoffman.

“Your most direct route to being a working actor is to study and train with those who have manifested work themselves,” Rossi explains as his motto in show business.

Rossi moved to Los Angeles in 1989 and immediately joined the wellrespected Vincent Chase at his camera and cold reading workshop. Chase had coached hundreds of soap and television stars over his thirty-five-year career. While in LA, he auditioned for world-renowned acting teacher Stella Adler and, after being accepted into her master program, studied advanced scene study for two years.

MY WNY STORY film legends. Rossi also invested three years at the Harvey Lembeck Comedy Improv Workshop and studied acting and writing for several years under his mentor and long-time friend and Oscar winner, Bobby Moresco.

A thirty-year proud member of the Screen Actor’s Guild, he is also an acting teacher, screenwriter, and casting director in Buffalo. He has studios in Buffalo and Rochester and has taught more than 1,400 children and adults over the past fifteen years.

This month, Rossi makes his directing debut in The Red Dress, a play produced by his friend from Los Angeles, Jonathan Sanger, and written

Rossi, who has been casting Hollywood feature films in the WNY since 2016, was responsible for casting twenty-six principal roles and the criminal jury for Marshall and twentyfour principal roles in Cold Brook, which was filmed here last summer.

Cold Brook was written, directed, and produced by Cheektowaga native and actor Bill Fichtner, who also co-starred in the film.

Why You Might Want to Consider Supplementation

odine, a trace mineral, is present in certain vegetables and seafood and is essential for normal thyroid functioning. Yet, according to renowned iodine expert Dr. David Brownstein, more than 96% of the population is deficient.

The most common disorder that results from iodine deficiency is hypothyroidism and goiter (aka puffy neck syndrome). Common symptoms of a sluggish or underactive thyroid include: fatigue, depression, constipation, dry skin and hair, difficulty losing weight, high cholesterol, and cold hands and feet just, to name a few. Fibrocystic breasts and fertility issues are common as well.

Iodine deficiency is rapidly emerging as a major risk factor for breast cancer.

The thyroid gland is located in the front of your neck, just below your voice box. Thyroid hormones control your body’s metabolism, regulating everything from body temperature and heart rate to glucose consumption and even blood cholesterol levels. Iodine promotes the production of thyroid hormones and without it, things get sluggish.

In nature, iodine is a relatively rare element. It’s found in abundance in the

ocean. Its presence in soil, on the other hand, is very low in many places around the world, including the United States.

Iodine is essential to life and especially crucial for brain development in children, making its deficiency the number one cause of preventable mental retardation worldwide.

But, isn’t iodine in my salt, you ask?

With credible documentation out there to support benefits of a diet low in sodium, many of you are cutting salt intake. And there is not enough iodine added to manufactured salt to protect your thyroid. Natural salts (celtic sea salt or Himalayan) are better options by far, but still fall short of supplying what you need.

Food sources for iodine are not common additions to most individuals diets. Seaweed, the most abundant source of edible iodine, contains up to 1900% the recommended daily amount necessary to keep levels up.

(plain) yogurt, shrimp, navy beans, and eggs contain a much lesser amount.

If you are not interested in protecting and improving thyroid function, you may change your mind when you find out that iodine protects you from radiation fallout. Neighboring Poland dispensed iodine supplements and avoided the devastation. More recently, Japan’s Fukushima disaster exposed millions worldwide to radiation. supplementation should be on your most important supplement list. The thyroid gland is also very susceptible to radiation. The thyroid will uptake radiation instead of iodine, which damages the cells of the thyroid. The thyroid is key to the endocrine system of the body, working in harmony with the other glands to regulate all systems.

Iodine has been shown to be protective against breast and prostate cancer. Iodine in the breast tissue may buffer estrogen. Iodine can help protect eyes against UVB radiation. Iodine has been shown to be vital for the heart, as thyroid hormones help regulate the heart.

Iodine is one of the best antiseptics, and is used daily in medicine for surgery to create a sterile field. It can also be used on cuts and to sterilize water.

Tim Wendel, Author of Cancer Crossings, Visits Buffalo

im Wendel, author of Cancer Crossings, will discuss his work at two events in Buffalo this month. Wendel plans a talk about his work and a book signing at Just Buffalo at 468 Washington St., sponsored by Talking Leaves Books, at 7:30 p.m. on May 22. On May 23, Wendel participates in a Facebook live event at Roswell Park, Elm and Carlton Streets, followed by a conversation with Roswell Park researchers to discuss the achievements they’ve made in cancer research. The events are open to the public.

Born in Philadelphia, Wendel was raised in Lockport, New York. One of his first jobs was writing music reviews for The Buffalo Courier-Express. Since then, he’s worked on both coasts and in between, covering everything from the Olympics to politics to the America’s Cup. Now, in his latest book, Cancer Crossings: A Brother, His Doctors, and the Quest for a Cure to Childhood Leukemia, Wendel tells the story of his brother, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1966.

Wendel later learned that many of the doctors who treated his brother were at Roswell Park, and they made up an extraordinary group of physicians who, despite being ostracized by their peers, developed modern-day chemotherapy practices and invented the blood centrifuge machine, which helped thousands of children live longer lives.

Wendel interviewed these doctors and tells their story.

When Eric Wendel was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1966, the survival rate was ten percent. Today, it is ninety percent.

Even as politicians call for a ‘Cancer Moonshot,’ this accomplishment remains a pinnacle in cancer research.

The author’s daughter, then a medical student at Georgetown Medical School, told her father about this amazing success story. Wendel soon discovered that many of the doctors at the forefront of this effort cared for

his brother at Roswell Park in Buffalo, New York. Wendel went in search of this extraordinary group, interviewing Lucius Sinks, James Holland, Donald Pinkel, and others in the field.
