BLOCKING THE VIEW

Create yard privacy with fences, hedges, or art

Good fences may make good neighbors, at least some of the time. In rural America or England (where Robert Frost penned the phrase), fences or hedgerows made sense to keep one man’s animals off the other’s land. Or they delineated legal property lines, advising potential trespassers where not to hunt, approach the family, or trample crops.

In contemporary times, these functions can still be relevant. Her dog yard requires a good fence; he would rather not have kids cut across his lawn; or the pool must be fenced for safety reasons. More often, however, fences or hedges confer both aesthetics and privacy.

Your yard, with its garden beds, furnishings, and art, deserves an enclosure or frame even if your primary reason for providing one is not wanting to see the neighbors’ kids or not wanting them to see you. In busy, fragmented, no-me-time lives, privacy becomes sacred. For

enjoyable outdoor living, you may want walls or fences and what kind you choose makes all the difference.

If you think you want a fence, wall, hedge, or visual barrier, start by asking yourself why you want it. There are three potential reasons, with shades of severity:

You need an absolute barrier for safety or comfort. If that is the case, you probably should hire professionals to make a real wall or substantial fence to block others out. You also need to make decisions about gates, doors, and driveways, for times you want to move furniture or vehicles in and out

of the enclosed area. An important consideration is what the people on the other side of the wall also want, so diplomacy and negotiation are important. Walls and fences have two sides and can be functional and pleasing from both views. A welldiscussed, preplanned fence certainly can make for good neighbors.

You want to block sightlines and/ or to keep others from looking in. This may not call for a solid blockade. The dividing line can be softer and more variable—and done with plants. It may be most important in warm months, when you and the

8 FOREVER YOUNG EDITORIAL

neighbors are out in the yard, but not relevant in winter when it’s nice to allow the yard all the light it can get.

You want to frame or highlight the garden. Especially in neighborhoods with adjacent yards, a fence or hedge helps to say, “This is where our space starts and ends.” Or you may simply want a backdrop for a piece of art, fountain, plant collection, or specimen. How you provide that frame or backdrop is where taste and design make the difference.

Wall wisdom

In the book, Buffalo-Style Gardens (St. Lynn’s Press, 2019), my book partner Jim Charlier and I describe and show many kinds of walls, hedges, and fences. In the Charlier yard alone (a featured garden of Garden Walk Buffalo), Jim shows several ways to make solid walls attractive. Sometimes it’s by using garden art collections or wall hangings to distract the eye, or by embellishing the wall with a

meticulously maintained espalier.

Toward the Eastern end of Lancaster Avenue, two other gardens use different barriers. In the Irey/Locke garden, an extensive plant collection is bordered with white painted lattice fences, gates, and arches— all see-through and airy. Across the street in the Humann yard, a muchphotographed hedge is clipped neatly, enclosing a lovely wall of whiteflowering Hydrangea macrophylla.

Walls don’t necessarily have to be built to enclose a garden or provide a backdrop. Many regional gardeners use the back or side wall of their own or a neighbor’s garage or shed. (Suggestion: If you plan to paint or hang things on someone else’s wall, even if they might never know, it is wise and considerate to ask permission.)

Living fences

Professional landscapers, expert gardeners, and nursery employees

often hear variations of “I want a line of tall green bushes to block off [something] and they have to grow fast.” The good professional will ask questions to identify site factors and need. Very likely, the answer is not the lineup of a single species. (Typically, the customer points at columnar Arborvitae, as the first possibility.)

Here are some fallacies and facts concerning living fences and hedges:

Fallacy: The best hedge or barrier is a uniform lineup of the same kind of plant.

Reality: For several reasons, a line of the same plant is asking for trouble. One wind storm, crashing tree limb, or car accident makes a big hole in the hedge. A couple shrubs or trees look sickly or die (something with their roots or wind exposure). Animals eat plants but never uniformly. Or an insect or disease attacks that species one year, and your large investment is ruined. Variety is smarter.

9 EDITORIAL FOREVER YOUNG

Good fences— needed or not?

There where it is we do not need the wall:

He is all pine and I am apple orchard.

My apple trees will never get across

And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.

He only says, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.’

Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder

If I could put a notion in his head:

‘Why do they make good neighbors? Isn’t it

Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.

Before I built a wall I’d ask to know

What I was walling in or walling out,

And to whom I was like to give offense.

-Excerpt from Mending the Wall, by Robert Frost (1914)

Fallacy: Evergreens make the wall to divide us from neighbors.

Reality: Evergreens are often more expensive than deciduous shrubs or trees, especially if you require tall ones immediately. Many evergreens are slow-growing. They can be hard to establish—especially large specimens—because of water or drainage requirements, winter desiccation, and animal predation. (The ubiquitous Arborvitae in particular are deer candy sensitive to wind, salt, and some pests.)

Fallacy: To look good, dignified, or professional, the “living wall” has to be uniform.

Reality: You are not designing the gardens at Versailles. Today, most home gardens or even commercial properties do not feature formal designs, as in traditional estates and parks. A wall of plants or “living fence” is equally effective if you provide a variety of plants with some repetition of species, forms, or colors.

Fallacy: A clipped edge or hedge of boxwood (or similar) is easy to keep up—just clip it every spring.

Reality: So not true. In addition to the odds of some plants getting damaged or underperforming, clipping any hedge takes considerable physical effort. Often done wrong, the clipped hedge easily becomes unattractive and unmanageable. (When you simply top the hedge or clip the sides routinely, plants become dense at the clipped ends, leaving bare sticks in the middle of the plant where the sun does not reach. Better hedges, if you still require one, are shaped as pyramids, rather than straight-sided.

Alternatives to fences or the one-species hedge

Gardeners and homeowners have choices when it comes to creating barriers or dividing lines.

• The eye likes repetition so that a row of anything says, “this is the edge, the line.” A repetition of planted containers—say, all blue, or all cylindrical—makes a pleasing divider, even if spaced apart. Or a

line of containers with repeated plant species or flower colors will do the job. A line of tree stumps (maybe with container plants on top), or boulders, or garden art pieces communicates the same thing. If it’s not important to completely block off the neighbor’s yard, consider a series of wrought iron arches or trellises, spaced apart and uniformly decorated with same-color climbing rose or trumpet vine. Spacing dividing items or plants evenly provides a visual, psychological divider and is cheaper than building or forming a solid wall.

• The hedgerow concept, traditional in England and on many American farms, works at both small and large scales. A border (of perennials, grasses, and shrubs) does a beautiful job of dividing yards or garden rooms, especially if there is repetition of some distinctive species, shapes, foliage, or flower color. A mostly native plant border, featuring plants that serve pollinators and other beneficial insects (asters, black-eyed Susans, blue-eyed grass, sunflowers, goldenrod, New York Ironweed) makes a fine edge of a yard or frame for a food garden.

On the larger scale, ecosystems would benefit greatly if most properties (even city yards) could spare side or back sections (from ten-to-thirty-feet wide) to provide swaths of layered trees, shrubs, and perennials—with as many native and berrying plants as possible.

Maybe your neighborhood does need some good fences to make good neighbors. Or your yard would just look better if you added a wall or divider. But before you head toward the box store for that chain-link or vinyl fence, consider the many other ways you can declare—beautifully— “This land is my land.” FY

H EALTHFUL COOKING

For one (or two)

Cooking for one, or even two, can be challenging. It may be tempting to turn to fast food, or open a can of something processed, but those aren’t the healthiest options.

If you find a recipe you like, don’t be deterred because it serves at least six. “Make a big portion, freeze it, and have it anytime with no fuss,” suggests Fox Run at Orchard Park Executive Chef Chris Reinhart. (Just be sure to mark freezer bags with contents and date.) If you don’t want to, simply reduce the recipe by a third to a half to meet your needs. Alternatively, seek out recipes intended for just one or two diners (see sidebar). And if you’re feeling lazy, salads, omelets, pasta, and stir fry dishes make good single serving meals.

Meal kit delivery services like HelloFresh are flexible enough to meet any lifestyle. Step-bystep recipes come with nutritional information and fresh, premeasured ingredients. If you don’t even want to do the cooking, many grocery stores carry fresh ready-to-eat meals as well (though they can get pricy!).

If you’re tempted by the convenience of readymade microwaveable meals, check nutrition facts before buying. These meals may not contain the nutrients you require and usually have high amounts of sodium. Consider them a backup for when fresh food won’t work.

The experts at HelpGuide, an independent non-profit that runs one of the world’s leading mental health websites, says, “The key to cooking for one is to master a few basic skills, stock up on essential ingredients, and get creative in making meals that work specifically for you.”

They suggest cooking a little extra and inviting a co-worker or neighbor to join you. Try sharing cooking responsibilities by taking turns preparing entrees and desserts.

If you’ve never considered yourself much of a cook, skip the grocery store and shop at a community or

farmers market. “Buying produce in small portions when the items are in season…that’s when they taste the best!” Reinhart says. “Choose quality ingredients and you’re going to make a quality healthy dish.”

You might even pick up some cooking tips. Take a cooking class. Or invest in convenient and useful devices like a slow cooker, toaster oven, air fryer, hot plate, rice cooker, or steamer.

The American Heart Association (AHA) offers a few basics on how to cook “deliciously for one” that begins with stocking your pantry with shelfstable items.

Canned tuna can help meet the AHA’s recommendation of eating fish—preferably oily fish that contains omega-3 fatty acids—at least twice a week. Use tuna to make a sandwich or stir it into low-sodium pasta sauce with chopped peppers and a dash of paprika

12 FOREVER YOUNG EDITORIAL

for a Spanish sauce. Tuna can turn into a salad by adding grated carrot, celery, raisins, and curry powder. Substitute low-fat plain yogurt for mayo. Tuna with apples and sunflower seeds makes a tasty salad topping.

Canned beans, after being drained and rinsed, can be added to mixed greens, vegetables, and sunflower seeds for a lunch or dinner salad. “Always have ingredients to make a delicious fresh salad,” Reinhart suggests. “Every meal goes great with a freshly made salad.”

Make a quick soup by microwaving a sweet potato and pureeing it with beans and low-sodium chicken broth.

Sautee beans in a bit of olive oil and garlic for three minutes, add lowsodium tomato sauce, and serve over whole wheat noodles.

“ The key to cooking for one is to master a few basic skills, stock up on essential ingredients, and get creative.”

While brown rice is a good choice, add different flavors and textures to your meals with pearled barley, whole wheat couscous, bulgur, or whole grain corn grits.

Use low-sodium or no-salt tomatoes to make a simple personal pizza. You can also use a tomato sauce. “I always have a jar of low-sugar, good tomato sauce,” says Reinhart. “Heat canned tomatoes with dried oregano and garlic, or garlic powder. Spoon the mixture onto whole wheat pita bread and top with a little low-fat mozzarella and fresh vegetables.

If you make a big batch of red sauce, pesto, or low-fat white sauce, freeze it in ice cube trays, then transfer to a zip-top plastic bag. Tomato sauce can be reheated in the microwave. Defrost pesto and white sauce by dunking the

freezer bag in hot water. Serve over cooked vegetables or whole grain noodles.

Tortillas and pita bread can be kept in freezer bags in your freezer. Cut two corn tortilla chips into eight slices, spray them with cooking spray and turn them into warm corn chips after eight to ten minutes in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Top with drained and rinsed canned beans, green peppers, chopped tomatoes, and sprinkling of low-fat, low sodium cheese. Voila—nachos!

“I try to re-invent fattier menu items and make them healthier,” Reinhart shares. “I make nachos, but I use whole grain chips, make homemade, fresh salsa and guacamole, freshly grated cheese—it tastes so much better that way!”

Frozen fruits and vegetables are versatile additions to your menu. Frozen vegetables tossed into lowsodium chicken broth makes a bowl of soup. Try topping with cooked egg or stir in shredded chicken breast.

Add frozen fruits to a batch of corn muffins or spoon them over whole grain toaster waffles. Create a smoothie by whipping frozen fruit and low-fat milk in a blender.

Seafood is one of Reinhart’s favorites. “Cooking with shrimp is always great—you can sauté it, grill it, or put it in the air fryer,” he says, and adds, “you can buy it in smaller packages, so you don’t make too much of it for one meal.”

In addition, Reinhart recommends always having extra virgin olive oil, fresh herbs—buy fresh and in season and keep in the freezer until needed—a stocked spice cabinet, Pink Himalayan salt, and fresh or minced garlic on hand to flavor your meals.

Once you’ve taken the time to prepare a meal for yourself, use a nice place setting and a linen napkin. No eating out of the pan over the sink. You deserve an elegant dining experience, even if you’re eating alone! FY

GET FAMILIAR WITH YOUR FINANCES

Be mindful of money

Roughly three-quarters of Americans say they are stressed about their personal finances. It’s one of the biggest stressors in our lives, but it doesn’t need to be. Taking action can reduce many of the anxieties we have surrounding money.

Social Security

If you haven’t already, make a My Social Security account online. This is an easy, safe, and free method to view and manage your benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA), or estimate your payment if you haven’t begun collecting yet. Keep knowledgeable about factors that impact payment, how payment is calculated, and the amount that you will receive to better understand how payments will affect your financial status. Many

people assume that Social Security alone will be enough to live on, but it often isn’t. Check out Social Security spousal benefits, divorced spouse benefits, survivors benefits, and disability insurance benefits that you may be eligible for.

Retirement finances and accounts

If retirement is on its way, create a financial retirement plan. Common expenses such as housing, health care, insurance, taxes, utilities, groceries, debt,

home maintenance, and internet and phone services should all be factored in. Assess savings to see how much you can afford to spend each month after retiring. Review retirement accounts including a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), Thrift Savings Plan, Traditional and Roth IRAs, and pensions. If you’re looking to get back on track with retirement savings, the IRS allows annual catch-up contributions to some retirement plans; research your specific accounts to discover your options.

Writing and reviewing your estate plan

Did you know that almost half of American over the age of fiftyfive have no will? Though it may be uncomfortable to think about, a will or a trust details how your assets will be distributed after your passing. A will is a simple legal document, while a trust is more complex and allows you to transfer property to an account managed by another person. Assigning a power of attorney allows a close friend or family member to protect your best interests. If you already have these in place, review them and make sure they’re up to date.

Insurance and Medicare

Review your insurance plans; they play a key role in limiting out-ofpocket costs. Consider Medicare and Medicaid plans, Medicare supplement and advantage plans, dental insurance, vision insurance, costs for long-term care such as assisted living, home care,

or nursing homes. Veterans, seniors with disabilities, and those with limited or low income may benefit from federal, state, and local assistance.

Tax credits and deductions

Take time to review your taxes before filing returns. Under IRS regulations, you may be eligible for tax credits for health care, family and dependents, income and savings, being a homeowner, and education. Additionally, tax deductions may be available for health care, investments, work, itemized items, and education. Paying property taxes? In New York State, local governments can “opt to grant a reduction on the amount of property taxes paid by qualifying senior citizens…accomplished by reducing the taxable assessment of the senior’s home by as much as 50%,” according to tax.ny.gov. Reach out to your local assessment and taxation office to find out if you are eligible.

Saving money

Don’t miss opportunities to save money because of your senior status. Getting an AARP or Association of Mature American Citizens membership provides fast access to savings. Many large chain stores and restaurants offer discounts or “senior days.” Budgeting for leisure activities can be difficult, but you can save there, too! Movie theaters like AMC and Regal offer discounted senior tickets. The National Parks America the Beautiful Senior Pass offers an annual park pass for $20 or a lifetime park pass for $80 that lets you into more than two thousand recreation sites across the country.

When in doubt, ask! You never know what store or restaurant will discount your purchase. FY Reagan

ONE STEP AT A TIME

Optimize health with daily walking

As we age, it’s important to prioritize physical activity to maintain health and well-being—and one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise is walking. Walking is low-impact, accessible, and easy to incorporate into our lives. It also offers a host of benefits, especially for those who’ve never followed a regular exercise program.

Improved cardiovascular health: Daily walking improves circulation, which helps maintain healthy blood vessels and reduce risk of blood clots and heart disease, the leading cause of death for adults over sixtyfive. It also lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, and reduces risk of stroke.

Stronger bones and muscles:

As we age, bones and muscles weaken, which increases risk of falls and fractures. Walking is a weight-bearing exercise, meaning it puts stress on bones and can help maintain bone density. Walking

also strengthens muscles in the legs, hips, and core, which improves balance to reduce risk of falls.

Reduced risk of chronic disease: Regular walking reduces the inflammation linked to a range of chronic diseases, including osteoporosis, arthritis, and certain types of cancer. It also improves insulin sensitivity, which can help prevent or manage type 2 diabetes.

Reduced stress and anxiety: Walking clears your mind, gets you outside, and connects you with nature, which promotes the relaxation and mindfulness

that eases stress and anxiety. Additionally, walking with friends or a walking group provides social support and community.

Improved sleep quality: Exercise increases the amount of deep sleep, also known as slowwave sleep, that is crucial for physical and mental restoration. Walking also helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm—the internal clock that regulates sleep and wakefulness—which creates the restful and rejuvenating sleep essential for cognitive function, mood, and quality of life.

16 FOREVER YOUNG EDITORIAL

Increased outdoor exposure: Exposed to fresh air and sunlight, you’ll naturally build your levels of Vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and may boost your immune system. Being in nature has also been shown to improve cognitive function and memory!

Getting started

Promote consistency by choosing and setting a time to walk each day. Some options:

Morning walks: Walking in the morning starts your day on the right foot (pun intended!) with a boost in energy, mood, and mental clarity. Exposure to morning sunlight alsos help regulate your circadian rhythm, which is important for healthy sleep cycles.

After-meal walks: The physical act of walking stimulates digestion, which reduces bloating and discomfort. Metabolically, walking after a meal regulates blood sugar

levels, particularly important for seniors with diabetes or insulin resistance.

Evening walks: After a long day, nighttime strolls can be a great way to decompress and clear your mind. They’re also a healthy outlet for stress and tension.

Creating consistency

Once you’ve chosen a time for your daily walk, stick to it as much as possible. Here are a few tips:

Start slow: Begin with short walks and gradually increase time and distance. When life interferes remember that anything is better than nothing!

Find a walking buddy: A friend or family member can provide motivation and accountability. It’s also a great way to make time for social connection!

Mix it up: Walking the same route every day gets boring. Explore new neighborhoods or

even walking trails!

Track progress: Use a fitness tracker or app to track steps, distance, and other metrics. Seeing improvements provides motivation to keep going.

Make it enjoyable: Listen to music or an audiobook, bring a pet, or be mindful of fresh air and scenery! Try to make a new observation on your walking path every day.

Too often, we think we need to join a gym and do long workouts to get fit when the truth is that regular movement is the key to reaping the health benefits of exercise. It’s never too late to start. FY

INTERNET-BASED HOME SECURITY?

Now that’s “smart”

According to Pew Research, approximately twenty-seven percent of Americans aged sixty and older live alone and forty-six percent live with a spouse or partner. Smart home security systems can provide valuable peace of mind for them, their families, and their caregivers. These systems not only ease safety concerns surrounding crime, but also monitor well-being.

While devices and services run the gamut from basic to Jetsonslike space age technology, we’ve narrowed the search to focus on foundational products and services geared toward a do-it-yourselfer with a bit of tech knowledge. Choosing the right provider and equipment can be daunting, so below is a breakdown of needed accessories, types of services, and things to consider when outfitting a home:

The basics. To equip your home with any smart technology, you’ll need internet access and Wi-Fi. Any baseline service from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) like Verizon or Spectrum will provide the bandwidth

needed to power these devices; a hard-wired router can provide an additional layer of protection. Your ISP may offer a combination modem/ router with its internet package, or you can purchase one separately; they retail for $50 and up. And of course, you’ll also need a device— computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone—to monitor your data. The latter two offer the convenience of watching your home and controlling your security remotely.

Getting started. The most important factor in choosing a system is compatibility. Do a little research to determine your preferences, then save money and prevent potential headaches by

sticking with one carrier, like Amazon Ring or Google Nest; this will ensure maximum coverage and ease of use. Choosing is based on circumstances and needs, but here are two points to keep in mind: Nest is the best value for monthly monitoring while Ring has the widest range of addons for whole house automation.

Circle of trust. The beauty of cloud-based security devices is that you can give anyone in the world access to your information. While that may sound intrusive, it offers extra security to know, for example, that your son in Arizona can monitor real-time footage of your front door or your home health aide will receive an alert if your

18 FOREVER YOUNG EDITORIAL

carbon monoxide detector goes off. Homeowners can enable and disable who can gain entry to the data at any point, for any amount of time, and even assign parameters around what types of information others can see (only certain cameras, sound only, etc.). Some services even offer subscriptions that will alert local authorities when alarms or triggers go off.

Let there be light. As a first step, outfitting your home with smart light bulbs is well…smart. Control when and where your lights are turned on from a smart phone or app? Check. Set timers and/or create schedules for lights to go on and off at different times and in different rooms? Check. Synchronize lights to sensors so they turn on and off automatically when you enter or leave a room? Check. Activate voice commands or use wireless remotes for lighting (especially useful for those with limited mobility)? Check.

Philips Hue is the most popular brand, but there are others out there as well.

Not just for shopping. In addition to playing music and letting you know when packages are arriving, Alexa Echo has a Guard setting, a free feature that when enabled, uses its built-in microphone to detect the sounds of smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and breaking glass, then send a notification to a mobile phone. Ring’s monitoring service includes an option to request help from first responders or emergency contacts; even if you don’t have the service, you can still sound a siren to alert others in the house.

Smile for the camera. Security cameras are easy to install and only need a nearby outlet to power them. An electric doorbell system can be installed with some rudimentary wiring skills, or around $100 to pay a professional; battery versions are also an option. Cameras are sound/

motion activated and allow you to view who’s at your door and answer through an intercom, even if you’re not home. You can also receive alerts and video to your devices, as well as save footage for a finite time or indefinitely, depending on storage space or service options.

Of course, if you’d rather leave home security to the pros, many companies will install and monitor for you, like ADT, Omni, or Shield. Take time to research each option carefully, assess contract obligations, options for purchasing/ leasing equipment, and what kind of packages and customizations are available. There are no right or wrong answers, so ask questions and choose a plan that works for you. And if you find any that offer robot housekeeping/maid capabilities like Rosie Jetson, let us know. FY
