It is my pleasure to share with you the 2015-2016 Buffalo Seminary Report on Giving. Please enjoy the new downloadable format. 2015-2016 was a tremendous year. The Remarkable Opportunities Campaign (ROC) surpassed its goal and raised over $9,000,000 which allowed us to complete the Magavern-Sutton Courtyard, our Chapel renovation and building restoration, and more than doubled our endowment. Thank you to Jody Douglass, my predecessor, and to Board Chair, Margaret Brown ’72, for their vision and leadership. From Buffalo, across the US, and around the world, the support of the entire SEM community, alumnae, parents, faculty, trustees and friends is vital to our continued success. Thank you for your past generosity. We hope we’ve inspired you to give again this year. Your gifts ensure that students today receive the exceptional, rooted in tradition, yet forward thinking education that has been a hallmark of SEM for over 165 years. Legacy Residential Scholarship 2017-2018 school year
SEM will award a $10,000 merit scholarship to an outstanding candidate for our residential program who has been recommended by a graduate, trustee of the school, or SEM family. Residential students live in one of the four historic homes next to the school with a SEM staff member and girls from around the region, the nation, and world. The purpose of this scholarship is to build our SEM community with talented young women who have a connection to the school. Remarkable Opportunities SEM Strengthened
Remarkable Opportunities – Campaign for SEM significantly surpassed its $8.5 million goal, with gift commitments of $9,121,637 as of June 30, 2106. The most ambitious fundraising campaign in our history, Remarkable Opportunities – Campaign for SEM has transformed our campus. “The outstanding support from SEM’s Board, our Advancement team, and gifts from 1480 donors drove the success and are a source of great pride,” said Board and Campaign Chair Margaret Brown ‘72, whose lead gift launched the Campaign.
Campus Transformation When school opened in September, students and faculty arrived to a beautifully restored and reimagined space – our historic building has new luster and our footprint in Elmwood Village is now a true urban campus. Thanks to generous lead gifts from Marritje VanArsdale Greene ’69 and Michal and James M. Wadsworth, which inspired others to support our capital campaign, the school building was renovated. Imperative exterior brick and masonry work was completed; the Chapel was renewed with plaster, paint, lighting, floor and pew refinishing, and a new SEM-red curtain. To honor the Wadsworths, Upper WestChester was renamed for Patricia Oishei Colby ’32. The generosity of William J. and Linda (Robertson ‘73) Magavern helped create the new Magavern-Sutton Courtyard. Our five student and faculty residences are now linked by a beautiful common area of gardens and pathways scattered with picnic tables, and a great lawn for the whole school to gather – all was planned by landscape architect Mary Magavern Worrell ’60.
Endowment Soars When the Remarkable Opportunities – Campaign for SEM opened in 2014, our endowment was $4.9 million. Campaign gifts and commitments have grown this critical resource to over $10 million. Endowment is imperative for an independent school to have a strong, vital future. At SEM, it is also essential to our desire to increase funding for student scholarships, faculty development funds, and programmatic priorities like our innovative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Mathematics) curriculum and deeper community involvement initiatives. I think I’m a good planner and facilitator - try to keep things on schedule and moving along. Proudest accomplishments - 30+ years of marriage and 30+ years working in development! What you think is outstanding about SEM? Small classes, great teachers and colleagues. Location can’t be beat!
Year at SEM? 1 Favorite place you have traveled? It’s a tie between Morocco and Bosnia they both have centuries of fascinating history and culture and incredibly friendly people. Best trait? Compassion Proudest accomplishment? My education - I went to Smith College for my undergraduate degree and Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy for my Master’s. What you think is outstanding about SEM? There’s a place for everyone’s voice at SEM.

However, I’m a 2008 SEM alumna and former Summer at SEM counselor, so I am not at all new to the school! Favorite place you have traveled? Florence, Italy Best trait? I like to think I have a pretty good sense of humor! Proudest accomplishment? I’m very excited and proud to be pursuing an MA in English through Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English. What you think is outstanding about SEM? As a graduate and employee of SEM, I’ve found myself both comforted and challenged by this institution. SEM provides a safe space for its students and employees to learn and grow, to question pre-conceived notions, to formulate and defend opinions, to expand our worldviews— the list goes on and on. SEM shaped me into the person I am today, and it continues to influence me in new and exciting ways every day.

SEM Historian, Editor for Class Notes & In Memorium Years at SEM? 46 His responsibilities have ranged from teaching French, Latin, and electives in English to his current involvement in the front office and in the Development Office. A graduate of Hamilton College where he received his BA in French Literature, he earned his Master’s degree at the University at Buffalo where he also served as a teaching assistant.
The now legendary determination of Janie and Barbara helped drive the Remarkable Opportunities - Campaign for SEM’s unprecedented success. With their help, we grew SEM’s Annual Fund and built important and lasting relationships with Western New York’s philanthropic community. Generations of SEM girls will benefit from their energy, commitment, and belief in SEM.

SEM’s Board of Trustees Changes for 2016-17 Claire S. Schen, PhD
Claire is a career humanities educator, currently an associate professor of History at the University of Buffalo where she recently served on the General Education reform committee and helped develop the UB Seminar for first year students. In addition to her higher ed faculty experience, she has taught at Nichols School. Her daughter, Madeline Cherr, is a member of the Class of 2018. Claire’s undergraduate degree is from Brown University and she earned her PhD from Brandeis University.
Elizabeth Montesano Roach
Elizabeth is currently chair of the English department at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Delaware, where she has also coached girls’ varsity tennis, served as director of girls’ athletics, as housemaster, and worn the many hats as spouse of a school head. Elizabeth’s mother, Diane ’51, sisters Cally ’74 and Jennifer ’89, and sister-in-law, Molly Roach ‘74, are SEM alumnae. Elizabeth is a familiar presence at SEM’s Class Day each year, presenting the Cally Montesano ’74 Award in her sister’s honor. Elizabeth is a cum laude graduate of Nichols School, earned her BA at Mount Holyoke College and her MA at Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English.
Robert P. Carr
Bob is returning to SEM’s Board for his 3rd term having served as Trustee from 2008-2014. During his tenure and including time since 2014, Bob has been an active and important contributor to the Board’s Admissions & Marketing Committee, focusing on marketing communications and branding related work. Bob is co-founder and president of Carr Marketing Communications. He also teaches at St. Bonaventure in the Integrated Marketing Communications graduate program. His daughter Jule graduated from SEM in 2009. Bob holds an MBA and a BA in journalism from St. Bonaventure University. In addition to welcoming Claire and Beth, and warm welcome back to Bob, the Board extends its gratitude to departing Trustee

the SEM Art World April 7, 2017, we will welcome our 50th Colby-Oishei Artist, Pamela Mitchell Henrich ‘62. Pamela returned to SEM as an art teacher and was the first Colby-Oishei artist in the fall of 1983. This visit, she will share her beautiful trompe l’oeil paintings with a whole new class of SEM girls.

Carol Coatsworth Faust ‘40 Scholarship Fund (2000)
Established by the Faust family to provide scholarship support for a girl’s four years at SEM, this need-based scholarship is awarded to a minority student possessing academic achievement or potential.
Scholarship Support Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association (1924)
Originally established as the Graduates Association of Buffalo Seminary Scholarship Fund, this scholarship currently offers a one-year partial scholarship annually to an incoming or current student who is maternally related to a SEM alumna.
Jean Wright Hudson ‘51 Award (2007)
Established by Lydie Arthos and Joseph L. Hudson IV as an endowed fund in honor of his mother, Jean Wright Hudson ‘51. The award is presented to a sophomore who embodies citizenship and virtue after the completion of her first two years at SEM.
L. Gertrude Angell Competitive Scholarship Fund (1930) Bequeathed to the Buffalo Seminary in Miss L. Gertrude Angell’s Last Will and Testament to provide a scholarship for a term of four years, provided academic qualifications are maintained.

Awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics and extracurricular activities. The scholarship honors the memory of Sofia Grace Hoover, daughter of Amy C. Martoche ‘88 and her husband Timothy W. Hoover. This award supports the recipient’s education and growth while encouraging her to make her own unique contribution to Buffalo Seminary.

General Endowment (1930)
Established to secure SEM’s future and support the school’s greatest needs.
Students live with faculty members in four historic homes connected by the MagavernSutton Courtyard to the school building. Faculty, day, and residential students use the courtyard oasis to relax. Together with SEM’s Larkin Field, a five-minute walk down an Olmsted parkway, SEM’s campus is formed. Residential students are steps away from stores, coffee shops, art galleries, notable architecture and Delaware Park. Students attend concerts, theater, professional sports, explore restaurants, and attractions. On weekends there are trips to ski, ice skate, kayak, zipline, and pumpkin pick.

Michal & James Wadsworth Endowment Fund (2012) Established a permanently restricted investment to support the General Endowment, the proceeds of the Fund shall be used for the school’s greatest needs.
Brian & Deborah Lipke Fund (2014)
Established as a restricted investment to the General Endowment and for the school’s greatest needs. Every attempt has been made to include all funds that were named, designated with restrictions when established and are held in permanency for the use of Buffalo Seminary.
My hometown in the Southeast is very small and rural, so coming to Buffalo is a huge difference. I love going to the park, the AlbrightKnox Art Gallery, stores, and restaurants. Your Gifts Support More Opportunities... for Academics We believe in standards but not standardization. Because we are an independent high school, SEM is exempt from state testing requirements. Instead, seated at Harkness tables or in labs, students have honors and AP classes and explore diverse electives including astronomy, computer science, journalism, and women’s literature.
SEM teachers have challenged me to be better in all aspects - to say what I mean, to stick up for my perspective, to listen deeply, and to learn widely while being mindful of those around me. SEM teachers have given me the confidence to exist as my full self, both in and outside of SEM.

It is natural for me to be in a small class where more than one language is spoken. I am accustomed to discussions with diverse viewpoints, open minds, and where differences are seen as advantages. I embrace my cultural uniqueness, and I will add my voice to the community. I can’t imagine not continuing this in college. Your Gifts Support More Opportunities... for Discovery SEM fosters a multicultural, global perspective. Our small classes facilitate expression, understanding, and tolerance. Due to our small size, girls regularly sign-up for sports they’ve never played (i.e. fencing, field hockey), activities they’ve never tried (ie. chess, Model UN), and language trips. We are able to take advantage of our city and our region - we go to museums and the theater, on architectural field trips, and on ski nights.
