Letter from Head of School
Dear Members of the SEM Community, Thank you. What simple, but important words. Each day I am reminded that without the support of each of you the magic that takes place on our campus would not be possible.
roofs, updated technology in the classrooms, the exterior of 205 Bidwell has been repointed and is good to go for the next 100 years! The MagavernSutton Courtyard provides the outdoor gathering place which brings our community together for classes and celebrations. The 2018 Reunion began with cocktails and class pictures in the courtyard which was lovely and fun. Pictures are on page 34.
Your support of SEM is essential to the continuation of the 167-year-old tradition of preparing young women from Western New York, and now around the world, to be knowledgeable and committed citizens... wherever they may land.
Remaining a nationally recognized school for girls and remaining a strong draw for local day students requires continued investment in SEM. Other girls’ schools in the area are strong competitors. We will continue to lead by example and to strengthen that which sets us apart from the expected feel and fare of a girls' school.
Our ability to connect with, and travel to meet potential SEM girls from across the globe is a direct result of your support. The distinguishing features which attract our talented residential and day students are a challenging academic program coupled with our small size, comfortable family-style residences, and dedicated faculty.
Your support sustains us and enables us to plan for a robust future of setting resilient young women on paths to college and into the rest of their lives.
Thanks to your support last year we increased professional development for our faculty; they have been, and continue to be central to the SEM experience.
With much gratitude,
The six buildings that comprise our unique urban campus are in great shape. We have fully repaired

GIVING DAYS Art Auction | SEM’s inaugural online
art auction debuted in spring 2018. 23 alums, faculty and former faculty, parents and former parents generously donated art to the auction, which was chaired by Monica Angle P‘15 and Kate Bowen Smith ‘92. Contributions ranged from photographs to sculptures to an encaustic painting. Timed to coincide with Reunion, the art was on display in a mini show at SEM. Since the auction was conducted entirely online, alums from all over the world had the opportunity to participate. The auction had an enthusiastic reception and raised over $5,318 for SEM! Alumnae Giving | One of the requirements to receive a SEM diploma is service
to the greater community. While the requirement ends at graduation, the following alumnae continue to give generously in the same spirit that was so important then and still is today. Support from alumnae is a wonderful gesture of thanks and commitment to SEM’s mission.

Legacy Residential Scholarship Do you know a girl who would be a great SEM girl? A great Hornet or Jacket? She doesn’t have to be from Buffalo anymore… Because whether she’s from around the block or around the world – Buffalo Seminary has a place for her in our 5- or 7-day boarding program in the beautiful historic homes next door to the school. Scholarships are now available for residential girls referred by a graduate, trustee of the school, or SEM family for the 2018-19 school year. The purpose of this scholarship is to build our SEM community with talented young women who have a connection to the school. To nominate a candidate, contact Director of Admission Laura Munson ‘79 at 716.885.6780 or email admission@buffaloseminary.org.

From Buffalo to Buenos Aires, Ottawa, London, Paris, DC, Singapore, and Johannesburg, there are over 3300 SEM alumnae around the world... What do we share? SEM. The Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association (BSAA) has transitioned to a national and international organization, providing networking and engagement opportunities for alumnae wherever they live. In September 2017, the Head’s Council on Alumnae Engagement (HCAE) was launched to guide the development of this initiative and support SEM’s Head of School. The HCAE is focused on new initiatives in four key areas identified as most important: • Alumnae Communications • Events and Programming • National Platform for Networking and Resource Sharing • Establishing new chapters of the BSAA in regions beyond Western New York where there is both interest and prospective alumnae leadership
For more information or to get involved, visit BuffaloSeminary.org/Alumnae
Calling All WNY Alumnae! The Buffalo Chapter wants you! We’re looking for local alumnae who wish to serve on the board of directors. The board facilitates many of the events you have probably attended such as the reunion dinner and the Holiday Bazaar. But we do much more and would love to have you join us! Contact Lucy Butterbaugh Coburn '73 at bigmamalu@gmail.com for more info.

2017-18 Report on Giving
Elm Legacy Society |
Our friends and alumnae who have chosen to name the school as a beneficiary in their wills are members of SEM’s Elm Legacy Society. Membership grows each year and includes forwardthinking supporters from all decades and from an ever-widening range of life stages and financial means. We are grateful to all who help to ensure the SEM experience for our girls. SEM’s future grows stronger each time we welcome a new member to our Elm Legacy Society. Gifts of all sizes benefit future generations of students, faculty, and school leadership while offering tax advantages to donors and their heirs.
We wish to welcome and thank our newest members to the Elm Legacy Society: Sarah "Sally" (Jeacock '43) and Richard Munschauer

2017-18 Report on Giving
In Memoriam The summer of 2018 marked the loss of a number of remarkable SEM supporters. We mourn their loss and offer heartfelt condolences to their families. The depth of their commitment to our school was profound - we continue to receive an outpouring of gifts in their memory. A final list of donors will be listed in the 2018-19 Report on Giving, but it seemed important to note them in this 2017-18 Report, as well.
Elizabeth “Bette” Treiber Boeckel ‘41
A past President of the Graduates’ Association where she received an Outstanding Service Award in 1972 and she is a former Trustee. “She encouraged us without pushing us, she taught us how to move on from loss or sadness, she was firm on style, traditions and manner, but most of all she taught us how to live a full life with grace, dignity and kindness. She would simply say, ‘do your best,’” wrote her daughter Holly Boeckel Allen ‘73.
an Outstanding Service Award. She walked by SEM every day and said her dearest friends were from her SEM years. Her senior quote in the 1951 Seminaria was prescient: “I take delight in going my way/And encouraging others to obey/I’m sometimes sad and sometimes bright/But I shall always be delight.”
Rosemary Smith Marlette ‘41
Mother, grandmother, and aunt to generations of SEM women, a devoted alumna who gave us so much in so many ways, serving as both a Trustee and Life Trustee on our Board and receiving an Outstanding Service Award. The Seminaria from her graduating year remarks on her “radiant personality.” She remained true to that characterization throughout her life. Mrs. Marlette was a supporter of countless SEM development initiatives large and small and a vibrant presence at events.
Linda Kittinger Wadsworth ‘56
A Trustee and an Honorary Trustee, and active as an officer and a volunteer in an number of local non-profits, SEM was fortunate to have had her as our Director of Development. Her father, Irvine, served as Board Chair and her mother, Betty Duthie Kittinger '30, was an alum. She was also a member of our Elm Legacy Society, for which we are deeply grateful.
Elizabeth “Delight” Reed Dann ’52
Past President of Graduates’ Association had a long family history at SEM; her daughters and nieces also attended SEM. A social justice activist, Delight challenged all of us to serve not only SEM but the Buffalo community. She is a recipient of
Linda Robertson Magavern '73 Trustee, BSAA Buffalo Chapter Recording Secretary It’s hard to overstate what Linda has meant to SEM since the day she crossed the threshold in 1969 as a freshman. Linda was everywhere we needed her and completely dependable - whether it was setting up the Holiday Bazaar or donning a robe to march in the procession of trustees at commencement. During the recent Remarkable Opportunities capital campaign, Linda and her husband Bill made the courtyard that connects our five student residences to the school building a priority of their generous support. It is known as the Magavern-Sutton Couryard. She was a founding member of the BSAA Buffalo Chapter, and served as corresponding secretary during the last school year (2017-18). She received the Semper Fidelis award at reunion in June 2018. As a Trustee, she served on the Buildings and Grounds, Strategic Planning, Governance, and Development Committees. Only a few months into this school year, her warmth, humor, and steadfast loyalty to SEM are sorely missed.

2017-18 Report on Giving
WHY SEM? You can put a student in a SEM classroom who otherwise would not be able to attend.
Your gift to SEM will have an immediate impact on a student's life. buffaloseminary.org/give When I first started giving to SEM, I did it as a way of honoring the memory of a beloved teacher and family member. And while I still do that, now I appreciate that my gift impacts the experiences of the current and future SEM students who benefit as I did from those who gave before me. It feels good to continue the tradition of giving and to play a part in the education of tomorrow’s women leaders. I truly believe in the power of SEM to change women’s lives and in the power of all-girls. I hope you’ll join me in supporting SEM! Katharine Bowen Smith '92, Trustee "I support SEM because the value of my donation is priceless when I consider how SEM changed my life. My memories of SEM bring me a sense of joy and gratitude. I was embraced into a community of unique, talented, and strong females and was launched on a journey to be my best self. Not a week goes by that I’m not hearing about, talking about, or thinking about the SEM impact. A SEM education inspires and fosters girls to grow into the best humans they can be and I want to be sure that SEM continues this legacy for future generations.
