What a year 2014 was! Between the unprecedented number of visitors to see Morty, tremendous sales in our Gift Shop and an increase in membership revenue, we surpassed all expectations of success last year. Keeping the momentum going for the next ten years and beyond will be our next big challenge. This year we hope to undergo restoration work on Houses 2 & 3, our most popular greenhouses and home to our waterfall, koi pond, and dinosaur topiaries. We are working hard this year to create alternative revenue sources, such as new events, enhanced educational opportunities, and new exhibits like our Monarch Butterfly Exhibit and our outdoor Healing Garden. However, we need your support now more than ever to ensure that our success and momentum continue. Last year, philanthropic support from our community comprised approximately 42% of our annual operations, and this includes gifts from our annual fund appeals, leadership donors, tributes and dedications, public and private grants and our annual Gala at the Gardens. We will do our part to ensure continuity of operations and diversified revenue sources over the next two years, and I hope you will consider adding your vote of confidence in the Botanical Gardens with a gift of support this year. Please join us in ensuring the future for the Botanical Gardens. Your investment will help sustain us for the next 100 years! Betsy Webster, Director of Development

Love is in the Air!
Volunteers As the weather grows colder, there is less work to be done around the Gardens. During the months of December, January, and most of February we will have a Volunteer Winter Break! This means we will not need the delightful help of volunteers until the beginning of March - There simply is just not enough to do. Interested in becoming a volunteer? The start of our new orientation program will be February 24 at 10am in the Administration Building basement. If you have already participated in our volunteer program, there will be occasions that we will ask for help during the break months; so you will have a chance to come in and beat the winter blues. We will inform you when this happens via e-mail or post. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at any time! Thank you very much, and stay warm in this wonderful Buffalo weather! The Botanical Gardens would like to congratulate Kathleen Telaak and Rob Kopp on their upcoming wedding! Rob and Kathy are both from Hamburg. They first met in 7th grade at Saint Peter and Paul Elementary School. They were friends for years and started dating in 2008 after graduating from college. The couple is getting married in February at the Gulf Harbour Yacht and Country Club in Fort Myers, Florida. Recently, Kathleen’s friends and family were here at the Gardens to celebrate her wedding shower: “Our experience at the Buffalo Botanical Gardens was exceptional. My mom planned the shower at the Gardens because we are having a destination wedding with a tropical theme. The beautiful, natural environment of tropical flowers and foliage was the perfect fit for my bridal shower. The pictures turned out amazing! For a chilly day in November, the room was sunny, warm and comfortable. The staff was all very friendly and accommodating. Overall, it was a great party!” We wish Kathy and Rob the very best as they start their lives together as husband and wife. To book your shower at the Gardens, contact us at 827.1584 ext. 219, ext. 220 or events@buffalogardens.com

HP2. Clematis SERIOUS BLACK™
HP3. Hosta ‘American Hero’
HP4. Pulmonaria ‘Raspberry Flash’
HP1. Asclepias incarnata ‘Cinderella’ A hybrid, noninvasive, swamp milkweed with pink flowers. The flowers, which are heavily laden with nectar and pollen, are particularly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. The long-lasting flowers on lengthy stems make an excellent cut flower. Sear the ends of the cut stems over a flame to stop the milky sap from leaking out. This species grows in loose clumps by means of slowly creeping rhizomes. It is noninvasive and can be safely mixed in with other perennials in the border. Native to North America. 24-36”H x 12-18”W, Z 5-9, full sun. HP2. Clematis SERIOUS BLACK™ A bush type Clematis that will stand up on its own. It is easily grown in a decorative patio container, as well as, in the border. Its newer foliage is an extraordinarily dark purple that matures to a deep green. In late spring to early summer, ivory colored blossoms about the size of a nickel appear in clusters reminiscent of ‘Sweet Autumn’ Clematis, and silvery seed heads follow in the fall. This selection is rather new and rare in the US, so we recommend ordering it early to reserve your share. 4-6’ H, 2-3’ W, Z 5-9, full sun.
HP3. Hosta ‘American Hero’ PPAF A durable Hosta that displays strong, bold variegation all season long. It has wide, dark green margins and a creamy white to pure white center speckled with green. The thick leaves form a dense clump, and as the plant matures they become twisted. Lavender flowers top the clump in midsummer. A portion of the proceeds ($.25) of each plant sold will be donated to Project EverGreen, a national non-profit organization and creator of the GreenCare for Troops program. 12-18” H, 12-18” W, Z 5-9, shade/part shade. Pairs well with P8 and P7. HP4. Pulmonaria ‘Raspberry Flash’ PP12138
Raspberry-pink flower clusters above dark green, silver-spotted leaves in late spring. It has a fairly upright growing habit that flowers profusely and shows resistance to powdery mildew. It is one of the very best cultivars available. Pulmonaria is an underused perennial that grows well in shady gardens. Great when planted with Hostas, Brunneras and ferns. Its flowers are among the most brilliantly colored blossoms of all perennials. 12-18” H, 1218” W, Z5-9, part sun/shade. HP5. Schizachyrium ‘Twilight Zone’ A total standout in your garden! This native grass possesses an iridescent, silvery, mauve-purple cast all over the plant beginning in midsummer. It retains these beautiful tones throughout the fall when brighter purple highlights appear on the flower stems. The attractive foliage forms a strictly upright, narrowly columnar clump that is about half as wide as it is tall. This is a plant that will grow in hot, dry areas where other plants have a hard time surviving. 24-48” H, 18-24” W, Z 5-9, full sun. Goes great with P4 and P6.

It is a cross between Digitalis (Foxglove) and its tropical relative Isoplexis. Spikes of flaming magenta-pink flowers with orange, magenta speckled throats are borne all the way around the stem. With sizeable rosettes of broad, glossy, dark green leaves. It is very floriferous with a long bloom period from early to late summer. It does well in moist, well-drained soils and makes a great cut flower as well. 18-24” H, 12-18” W, full sun to part shade, Z 8 (If you live in a place that is colder than zone 8, expect Digiplexis to be an annual.) Goes great with HP5 and P6. P6. Hemerocallis ‘Marque Moon’ An endlessly fascinating daylily! Extravagant ruffling gives an elegant look to its blossoms. The large, fragrant, cream colored flowers have a yellow throat that radiates onto the petals with a pearlescent sheen. Depending on the weather conditions, the large flowers may appear more peachy-pink than creamy yellow. This is a heavily budded daylily that can produce an incredible 40 buds per plant for a lengthy midsummer bloom period. 24” H, 18-24” W, Z 3-9, full sun. Goes beautifully with P10 and P4.
