The New Year began with the most successful light show in the Botanical Gardens’ history with over 21,000 visitors attending the nearly month long Lumagination exhibit. The 33% increase in attendance over 2017 can be attributed to the growing recognition that the Botanical Gardens’ annual light show is the “place to be” to uplift spirits Lumagination 2018 during Buffalo’s cold winter months. Photo by: Joe Diebold Photography Collaborations with various community groups, happy hours and a Valentine’s Day celebration contributed to making Lumagination the best ever. Outdoor Ceremonies

Volunteers Do you have extra time? Do you enjoy helping the community? If so, consider becoming a part of the Botanical Gardens’ volunteer family! Meet friendly people, learn more about plants, and provide support for our ever-growing programs. There is a lot to do! You may train as a horticulture volunteer and work inside and outside the greenhouses. Or your choice may be to help maintain our facilities with carpentry, electrical, and maintenance work. Maybe you would prefer administrative support and computer tasks. Or you may be tempted to work in the Gift Shop. Training as a docent means you would provide hands-on activities for visitors of all ages. Finally, there are volunteers that help with special events and weddings.

Finding a venue to hold your wedding ceremony can be stressful, especially when wanting to have it outdoors. An aesthetically pleasing area, along with weather, are things that couples must consider when finding the perfect ceremony space that seamlessly captures their personalities. The Buffalo Botanical Gardens has the space to accommodate small to large wedding ceremonies. The grounds are beautiful, and we always reserve an indoor greenhouse in case of inclement weather. Our outdoor ceremony space is the most popular area of the Botanical Gardens for events and is home to the majority of weddings that take place here. The white gazebo is the focal point of the outdoor ceremony space. Couples enjoy this beautiful gazebo along with a variety of shrubs and flowers as their backdrop. Black-eyed susans, canna lilies and zinnias are among the many types of plants that hug the sides of the gazebo and lawn. Buddleia, also known as butterfly bush, is also planted in this section to attract butterflies. To make sure that the outdoor ceremony garden remains a cohesive space, everything that is planted is well thought out and has a purpose. We like to add a plethora of color while still highlighting the natural beauty of the garden. This offers our couples a fantastic location to get married, along with numerous photo opportunities. In the event of inclement weather, we always have a backup plan. Our indoor location is as beautiful as the outdoor space. Even though it contains less colorful plants, the indoor events space is lined with ficus trees and other greenery, as well as hanging ivy which accents the room nicely. Located in these plants are twinkle lights that offer a little something extra, especially on an overcast day. No matter what the weather, there is no bad place to have a wedding ceremony at the Buffalo Botanical Gardens. To book your wedding at the Botanical Gardens, please contact us at 827.1584 ext. 219, ext. 220 or events@buffalogardens.com.

These will be judged the previous day by Master Judges from North Eastern USA and then displayed in large groups. Troughs, trays and pots, artfully planted with small hostas and companion plants, will also be displayed. New this year - Artistic flower arrangements incorporating hosta leaves will also be displayed! Nature’s Kaleidoscope - June 16 - August 19 A completely new theme for our colorful summer exhibit! Our talented exhibit team has come up with some kaleidoscope inspired display pieces that will incorporate hexagonal and leaf patterns on glass and other surfaces. Planned Giving Planned giving helps you maximize the tax benefits of your charitable giving while allowing you to provide a gift that you may not have thought possible. There are many ways to provide a contribution to the Botanical Gardens, but all planned gifts have one benefit in common - they encourage thoughtful financial planning and help people make a lasting investment at the Botanical Gardens. Bequests are the simplest way to leave a gift to the Botanical Gardens. A bequest can be an unrestricted gift that will allow us to apply the gift where the need is greatest. A bequest can also be designated for a specific purpose. If you are considering a restricted bequest, please contact us for an opportunity to discuss your ideas before you finalize your gift. The Botanical Gardens is a member of Leave a Legacy Western New York, a program of The Western New York Planned Giving Consortium. Please visit Leave a Legacy Western New York at leavealegacywny.org to learn more about how you can become a partner in sustaining the Botanical Gardens for generations to come. If you wish to designate the Botanical Gardens in your will or trust, please contact Brittany, Director of Development at bzandi@buffalogardens.com or 827.1584 ext. 203

Gardening Tip There is still time to plant flowers! Some gardeners think they have to have all their perennial flowers planted by Memorial Day, but that’s more of a starting point, not a deadline. For many perennials, you have to wait until the danger of frost has passed, and that usually happens by Memorial Day. But don’t stop planting then! Visit your local garden center often throughout Photo by: the growing season to see what’s available. If you Connie Stofko shop only at the beginning of the season, you may be attracted to the plants that are flowering then. If those are the only plants you buy, you’ll end up with a garden that looks great early in the season but quickly fades. A great way to make sure you have perennials blooming throughout the season is to shop often and see what’s blooming at various times. You can get more great gardening tips at BuffaloNiagaraGardening.com, the online gardening magazine for Western New York It’s free to subscribe!

Botanical Gardens in the Classroom - Popular with smaller class sizes and summer schools. Our education staff goes into classrooms to lead an activity with all materials and instruction provided! This program includes a 45 minute lesson - schools choose either terrarium or desert dish - for up to 35 students per class. Grow Your Event - Typically for this program, schools will pick this option for a Science Night, but events like Plantasia and larger tabling programs will fit under the umbrella of this program with adaptations. With this program, we can accommodate smaller events all the way up to large events with 300+ attendees. Each participant will interact with two stations. Adults can participate, upon request. Locations select two from the following popular programs: • Seedling Planting (seasonal): Take a baby plant home to care for and nurture. • Mung Bean Greenhouse: Make your own tiny greenhouse for your beans, and watch them grow. • Succulent Propagation: Learn how to make more plants, and take a succulent plant home. Hands-On Workshops - A great program for libraries, community groups and afterschool programs! Your organization can choose from: Terrariums, Succulent Desert Dishes and Fairy Gardens (seasonal). This program includes a 45 minute program for up to 25 participants.
