Time does fly when you’re having fun and success too! Record levels were achieved in admissions, participation in our educational programs, attendance at Lumagination and much more. The opening of new exhibits, the Asian Rainforest and the Aquatic Garden, both immediate hits in January, attracted 8,200 guests on the opening weekend and continued to delight visitors throughout the year. Thank you to our members, donors, staff and volunteers for making 2017 the best year ever! Early in December 2017, Assemblyman Mickey Kearns announced that the Botanical Gardens was awarded $250,000 in grants from the New York State Assembly to help fund a variety of maintenance projects on the historic Botanical Gardens. These grants, when combined with a matching grant from the NYS Parks and Recreation Historic Preservation Fund and funds from Erie County’s capital budget, will allocate over $1.6 million in 2018 to perform much needed repairs to the historic conservatory. The main entrance to the Palm Dome will see a major face lift. Rotted wood will be replaced, windows will be repaired, upper and lower window vents will be stabilized and the façade will be repainted. Several areas within the conservatory will also be restored through these funds. I applaud Erie County Executive Mark Polancarz, all Erie County Legislators, Assemblyman Mickey Kearns and his colleagues in NYS government for their commitment and support to ensure that the historic Botanical Gardens remains a living museum that inspires curiosity and connects people to the natural world for generations to come. Our first major event in 2018 will be Lumagination. The Launch Party will be on January 26 from 6-9pm followed by 20 evening opportunities to view this spectacular exhibit. This is a “must see” event, which is sure to delight and help renew all during the cold days of February. Happy New Year and hope to see you soon at the Botanical Gardens!
Dave Swarts, President/CEO A very special thank you to the Foundations who have supported our Hands-On Educational Programs for the 2017-2018 school year: Follow us on Social Media!

Gratitude Garden
New!
We are planning an exciting and meaningful exhibit for the Spring Flower Exhibit 2018! Inspired by Tibetan Prayer Flags, we will create our own Gratitude Garden.
Tibetan Prayer Flags in Tibet
As a staff, when we think about what we are grateful for, the list of supporters to thank is extremely long! The Botanical Gardens is a truly magnificent place that has touched many lives, and there is so much for which to be thankful. We want to express our gratitude to all of our donors, sponsors, members, volunteers, vendors and friends through an art installation inside the Botanical Gardens. We also want to give our community and visitors the opportunity to express gratitude to this amazing place.
Over the last several months, we offered Gratitude Flags to many of our supporters. Supporters wrote what the Botanical Gardens means to them, their favorite memory at the Botanical Gardens, favorite flower, etc… on their own personal flag. Our team and volunteers will string the colorful flags throughout the entire conservatory to complement the Spring Flower Exhibit to create our Gratitude Garden. Our goal is to accumulate 2,000 Gratitude Flags, complete with personal notes, for this amazing new exhibit.

Gardening Tip Your amaryllis can bloom again and again! If you had an amaryllis blooming indoors over the holidays, you know the flower is dazzling, but don’t throw the plant away when it has finished blooming. You can enjoy spectacular flowers year after year. When the flower is done on your plant, you can cut the stem off, but don’t cut the leaves. The leaves make energy, which is stored in the bulb so it can bloom again next year. Keep the plant in a sunny window and continue to water it.
OUR CITY YOUR MAGAZINE “I love Buffalo Spree because it keeps me up to date on the most relevant improvements to our city’s cultural landscape. It’s my go-to guide for what’s new and exciting in Buffalo!”
—EMILY W. TUCKER Director of Benjaman Gallery Group
When the danger of frost has passed, put your pot outside and keep watering it. To cut down on the amount of watering your have to do, plant Photo by: several bulbs in one big container. A big container will retain moisture well Connie Stofko while a small pot will lose moisture quickly. If you have one bulb in a small pot, dig a hole in your garden and place your pot in the hole. That will also help the soil in the pot retain moisture. In the fall when the leaves of the amaryllis start to turn yellow, bring your pot into your basement or another cool, dark space. Don’t water the plant. In December or January, you’ll see green sprouts. Place the pot in a sunny window, start watering and watch the amazing growth.
