One of the best things about living in Western New York is that we have the opportunity to experience the beauty and variety that our four seasons offer. I must admit that spring was a very welcome season change this year. As I am writing this, spring is everywhere, inside and outside the conservatory. The indoor gardens are colorful and fragrant and the spring exhibit is more spectacular than ever. Daffodils, tulips and crocuses are in full bloom, both in the outdoor gardens and inside the conservatory. Don’t forget you will have an opportunity to purchase some of those beautiful bulbs at our annual Bulb Sale which takes place on May 4. Plan on arriving early - the bulbs go fast! Planting season is upon us and each year we host our Great Plant Sale. This is a great opportunity to purchase annuals, perennials, shrubs, tropical plants, hanging baskets and so much more from the Botanical Gardens. The Great Plant Sale will take place May 16-18 and we hope to see you there. This summer, the Botanical Gardens will again be open on Tuesday evenings. New this year, we have added the Salvatore’s Secret Garden Dinner Series on select Tuesday nights. Summer evenings at the Botanical Gardens are a must. More information is located on page seven. There are so many other exciting events, classes, workshops and exhibits planned this summer. Starry Night in the Garden, starring Andy Grammer, is on June 26. Botanics and Brews is returning with a great line up of food, beverages, basket raffles and the great local band JJ Swing on July 25. This is always a great party, so DON’T MISS IT! Finally, our community is so fortunate to have an architectural and historical treasure like the Botanical Gardens as part of the cultural landscape. To be certain that this amazing structure engages our community for another 119 years, this summer a major restoration and maintenance project will begin. The front entrance will be repaired, as will the upper and lower vents in the Palm Dome. Additionally, repointing of the stone foundation on the historic building and repairs inside the conservatory will also occur. Watch for lots of improvements in the coming months.

These will be judged the previous day by Master Judges from North Eastern USA and then displayed in large groups. Troughs, trays and pots, artfully planted with small hostas and companion plants, will also be displayed. Artistic flower arrangements incorporating hosta leaves will again be displayed. Gardening Tip Yes, you have room to garden! If you have room for one pot on your porch or balcony, you can do gardening. Planting in pots is called container gardening. It has a name, so it counts as gardening! Here are some tips for container gardening:

• If you have a wheelchair ramp, you have room for gardening. You can tuck a pot into a corner of the ramp. The pot won’t interfere with the wheelchair. • Decorative flowers are nice, but don’t forget that you can plant herbs and vegetables in pots, too. • You can mix different plants together. Consider combining a tomato plant with short marigolds and vining nasturtium. • Get creative with the container itself. Gardeners have grown plants in old boots, a glass light shade and an old bathtub. Consider using native plants, which provide food and a home for butterflies. Butterfly flower (also known as butterfly weed or Asclepias tuberosa) has lovely orange flowers and helps monarch butterflies.

Tributes & Dedications - A gift to the Buffalo Botanical Gardens is a thoughtful and touching way to remember a loved one, honor a special person, offer gratitude, or commemorate a special occasion. There are many ways in which you can honor someone special in your life; pavers, benches, planting a tree or creating a new tribute are some of the many options available to you. A thoughtful gift that will last for years to come!

The Florence DaLuiso-Zoll Society The Florence DaLuiso-Zoll Society was established to honor donors who may have a desire to remember the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Society, Inc. through planned giving. Society members understand the importance of leaving a legacy that strengthens the future of the Botanical Gardens and leaving a legacy that all of Western New York will benefit from. The Botanical Gardens Planned Giving Society is named after Florence DaLuiso-Zoll (September 2006). Florence was a volunteer preservationist who in 1979 explored ways to save the Botanical Gardens from financial crisis. Florence created docent programs and classes at the Botanical Gardens. She was elected President of the Friends of the Botanical Gardens Society in 1981 and was instrumental in forming the public/private partnership with the County of Erie.
