Celebrating Our 120th Anniversary! Happy New Year! As we start a new year and new decade, on behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers our best wishes for a happy and healthy 2020. In the 16 years that the Botanical Gardens Society has operated the Botanical Gardens and maintained the collection, so many great things have happened and here are a few highlights: - Overall attendance has grown by 200% - Membership now exceeds over 5,000 - Our family has increased to over 400 volunteers - The number of children, adults and individuals with disabilities who participate in our educational programs has grown by 265% - Our annual light exhibit has attracted over 150,000 guests since 2011 The Botanical Gardens has grown tremendously and without your assistance and support none of this remarkable progress would have happened. Also, during 2019, a long overdue maintenance project began on the historic conservatory. The entrance to the main palm dome has been restored with a new façade, windows and LED lighting. The chimney has been repointed and similar work will be completed on the foundation of the historic structure. Interior repairs include leveling the floor in greenhouse 10 and restoring doors, windows and walls that have deteriorated due to the conservatory’s high humidity levels. The upper and lower vent windows in the dome will be repaired this summer. We look forward to presenting the refurbished Botanical Gardens to the community this spring as we celebrate the 120th anniversary of our historic, architectural and botanical treasure which opened to the public in 1900. We continue developing plans to implement our Master Plan for the future which was developed by Toshiko Mori Architects. Our goal is to add an addition to the historic structure which will include a new entry and parking, café and expanded gift shop, classrooms, events facility, year-round tropical butterfly conservatory and new exhibit and grow spaces. Stay tuned as we announce more progress on this exciting plan in the coming months. Thank you for playing an important role in our past and in our future! Dave Swarts, President/CEO

NEW Eco Garden

Board of Directors

With the support of grant funds from the Josephine Goodyear Foundation; Plant WNY, The Western New York Landscape Association, Inc.; and volunteer Mary Hughes, the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens was able to install a new Eco Garden. The Eco Garden features a large variety of vegetables, herbs, composting bins, rain barrels for water collection, and vermiculture composting. Over 500 pounds of fresh vegetables and herbs were harvested from the Eco Garden and donated to Gerard Place, a not-for-profit serving the East Buffalo community— specifically women and children in need. “The Botanical Gardens is thrilled to collaborate with Gerard Place for the first time. The Eco Garden is a project our team has been working on for over two years and it is exciting to see this important project and garden come together. Not only are we expanding important green initiatives at the Botanical Gardens, we also created a wonderful collaboration with Gerard Place and are helping to fill a need in our community.” David Swarts, President/CEO of the Buffalo Botanical Gardens. “We are very excited to partner with the Botanical Gardens to help ensure that families that come to our site will have the opportunity to take home healthy options for their meals. In addition to this initiative, we will implement health and nutrition classes for the community using this food and showing people how to cook, clean and store the fruits and vegetables. The food will be used in our dining hall which helps to feed people dinner, in our monthly food express line with our partnership with the Food Bank and we will offer the food to our Children’s Academy parents who live in this community where food insecurity is their primary concern. We are so grateful to our community partners like the Botanical Gardens who will help us address this very serious issue.” David Zapfel, President/CEO of Gerard Place.

Gala at the Gardens Was a Huge Success! On September 20, 2019, over 350 guests gathered on a beautiful night on the front lawn of the Botanical Gardens to celebrate the annual Gala at the Gardens. Thank you to all the attendees, sponsors, and volunteers for making the Gala a success, raising money to support the Botanical Gardens’ mission. A special thank you to Co-Chairs Naniscah Koessler and Jackye Mandell, Honorary Chairs Ted and Terry Johnson, the hardworking Gala Committee, volunteers and our generous sponsors. This is year three of a four-year series, each one expressing gratitude for one of the elements, and 2020 is Marvelous Minerals! Everything solid on our planet is made up of minerals... if it’s not water, air or fire, it’s a mineral! We want to celebrate minerals and everything that makes up our amazing planet. As you peruse the Botanical Gardens during Lumagination 2020, contemplate the elements of the earth and life itself. Enjoy the show! Philip Colarusso Luminated Landscapes

Florence created docent programs and classes at the Botanical Gardens. She was elected President of the Friends of the Botanical Gardens Society in 1981 and was instrumental in forming the public/private partnership with the County of Erie. Gardening Tip - Attract Monarchs with the Right Plant! Don’t be put off by the word “weed” in milkweed. These plants have beautiful flowers and are happily used by gardeners who want pretty landscapes. If you want to attract monarch butterflies, this is the plant you need. Monarch caterpillars eat only milkweed, so the monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed. There are several varieties of milkweed. Many gardeners like the milkweed known as butterfly plant or butterfly flower, which is also called Asclepias tuberosa. It was called butterfly weed, but the name was confusing because the plant doesn’t look weedy. In fact, it has beautiful orange flowers. Another variety is swamp milkweed or Asclepias incarnata, which does well in wetter areas. It gets pink or white flowers. Common milkweed or Asclepias syriaca spreads readily, maybe even aggressively. However, if it gets into spots where you don’t want it, you can easily pull it up.
