On behalf of our Botanical Gardens Society’s Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and members, please accept my best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year. I am excited to share with you the good news about the continued progress the Botanical Gardens made in 2018. For example, in 2018, Lumagination attracted 22,000 visitors, participation in our education programs for elementary school children, Photo by Nancy Boeck adults and individuals with special needs nearly reached 25,000, flower and plant exhibits throughout the year were inspiring and artistically presented, and our overall attendance exceeded last year’s record attendance of 125,000. I am confident that with your support, the Botanical Gardens will continue to provide exciting and informative opportunities for all our visitors to experience and appreciate the important role plants play in sustaining life on our planet. In the spring of 2019, you will see significant activity on the exterior of the conservatory. The entrance to the Main Palm Dome will be completely restored rotted wood will be replaced, window vents in the upper and lower dome will be repaired and the entire structure will receive much needed painting. Also, the stone foundation of the historic structure will be re-pointed and repairs to woodwork in greenhouses 10, 11, and 12 will also occur. Funding for this work will be provided by the County of Erie, grants from the New York State Department of Parks, and the New York State Assembly. The growing commitment to preserve the Botanical Gardens for future generations is truly inspirational. Finally, the Society’s Board of Directors has, over the past four years, been developing plans for a potential $13.8 million expansion that would add 36,000 square feet for a butterfly conservatory, state of the art educational classrooms and grow houses, event spaces and more. The Society is discussing the expansion with public and private funders and will share more detailed information as the project develops. Thank you for your support!

A note from the producer of Lumagination

Welcome to LUMAGINATION 2019 The Magic of Air, a

light and sound immersion experience like none other. Housed in one of Buffalo’s greatest architectural jewels - the Botanical Gardens! This year’s show is the second of a four-year series exploring the natural elements - Water, Air, Earth, and Fire, for without any one of them life as we know it would not be possible. Within the air is the spiritual energy called “prana - food ye know not of ”. The symbiotic relationship between humanity and plants is undeniable. We exhale carbon dioxide and the plants transmute it giving us life supporting oxygen! So breathe in the essence of light and air, reflect on the importance of plants, and enjoy the show! Gardening Tip Make Peace with Your Puppy How can a dog tell which areas of the yard are off limits to him? A Buffalo gardener faced this problem with her puppy, Shiloh, who liked to get into the garden beds and dig holes.

The gardener made simple fences by laying out pieces of bamboo in a grid and tying them together. She set the fences around her bed and trained the dog not to go past them.

The natural-looking fences blend in well with the landscape, but they can be easily pulled out when she wants to show off her plants to visitors. You can get more great gardening tips at
