Happy New Year! On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, we hope that 2016 will bring happiness and health to you and your family. We also want to thank you for the support you’ve provided in 2015. Despite the terrible weather in February and the reconstruction of greenhouses 2 and 3, both of which had an impact on attendance, it was a very good year. Many projects were started which will come to fruition in 2016. Reconstruction - The reconstruction of greenhouses 2 and 3 which includes installation of safety glass, heating, electrical and misting systems should be completed this summer. Also, the wood work will be restored and/or replaced. Once this project is complete, staff and volunteers will begin rebuilding the exhibits inside. The exhibits will include exciting new features, horticulture collections and a refurbished waterfall and Koi pond. We hope to open the new exhibit this fall. Painting - Work will continue in 2016 to complete the painting and maintenance work on the exterior of the Palm Dome. Master Plan - Toshiko Mori Architects and Oasis Design will complete our “Master Plan for the Future “. It will provide an exciting guide to ensure that our magnificent facility and plant collection thrive for generations to come. New Projects - To align with the Master Plan, the Board of Directors has retained consultants to create a coordinating strategic and business plan and will explore the feasibility of conducting a capital campaign to implement the Master Plan. We are preparing for a bright future! None of these exciting opportunities could be possible without the generous support of our members, donors and volunteers. The Botanical Gardens has come a long way since it faced demolition in 1979 and the future is filled with excitement!

Philip J. Snyder, NCARB, AIA

Thank you for playing an important role in our future.

Plant the seed of knowledge, and watch your students or scouts bloom by exploring the plant world through hands-on investigations! Pass it on: the Botanical Gardens offers a variety of fun educational classes and workshops for kids of all ages. Discover the important roles plants play in our lives - giving us the air we breathe, the food we eat, the clothing we wear, and the shelter that protects us. Programs also include a tour of the Gardens. Field trip experiences include “Plants We Eat”, learning about the nutritional value of plants as we chop veggies, squeeze oranges and grind wheat into flour. Older students can explore the specific jobs of the parts of a plant and propagate their own plants in “Plants We Grow”, while middle school students discover the impacts of pollution on the environment through experiments in “Not a Drop to Drink”. Ideal for mixed age groups, camps and day care trips; “Make a Terrarium” or plant a succulent “Desert Dish Garden” and learn about many of the plants growing under glass! Hands-on classes are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and the New York State Science Standards. Reservations are necessary and must be booked four weeks in advance as dates fill quickly! For more information, please call 827.1584 ext. 291.

Gardening Tip What can gardeners do when the ground is frozen? Plant seeds outside in a mini-greenhouse made out of a milk jug or two-liter soda bottle. Using a box cutter, cut the jug horizontally almost all the way around. Plant your seeds. Poke a hole in the top and bottom, and slide a twist tie through the holes to hold it closed. The trick is to use seeds, such as tomato and zinnia, that can withstand the winter cold. The seeds will know when it’s time to sprout.

Plantasia Rocks! 2016 No matter what the weather is doing outside, it’s always spring at Plantasia. It’s the only garden show in New York State. You can see gorgeous landscapes, hear talks and visit vendors inside the Events Center at the Fairgrounds, 5600 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg. March 31 - April 3, Plantasia opens with preview night on March 30. Join the Botanical Gardens at the Children’s Discovery Garden at Plantasia. Fun plant activities abound in the garden just for kids at the Hamburg Fair Grounds Event Center. Visit www.plantasiany.com for more information. See ad on page 14.

Caterers We have chosen eight preferred caterers with a variety of delicious menus for every type of event so that our guests always have great experiences.

Volunteers As the weather grows colder, there is less work to be done around the Gardens. During the months of December, January, and most of February we will have a Volunteer Winter Break! The start of our new orientation program will be February 23 from 10am-2pm in the Administration Building basement. RSVP by February 8. If you have already participated in our volunteer program, there will be occasions that we will ask for help during the break months; so you will have a chance to come in and beat the winter blues. We will inform you when this happens via e-mail or post. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at any time! Thank you very much, and stay warm in this wonderful Buffalo weather!
