For 115 consecutive years, the Botanical Gardens has provided visitors with an opportunity to view exotic plants from around the world and wonderful flower exhibits that stir all of our senses. As we all know, it hasn’t always been a smooth ride for the Gardens during its history. Yet despite facing the wrecking ball twice, the Botanical Gardens is now poised to be part of the dramatic growth taking place throughout our community. We are excited to announce that the County of Erie, who owns the conservatory and is responsible for capital improvements to the facility, will begin the reconstruction of the north dome. This house is in dire need of repair. When the reconstruction is completed, all three domes will have been restored over the last ten years. Construction begins soon and will last for over a year. We are grateful to the County Executive and the County Legislature for their support of this project. The Gardens will be open during construction, so be sure to visit us to watch the improvements as they occur. Also, this summer the Botanical Gardens Society will begin another long overdue project to paint and perform minor maintenance work to the exteriors of both the main Palm Dome and the south dome. This work is needed to ensure that our iconic conservatory will be around to celebrate many more birthdays. We are very grateful to the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation, the Western New York Foundation, and the Community Foundation for their support to help ensure that the Gardens, a community treasure, experiences a smooth and successful road in the years ahead. If this isn’t enough, the Board of Directors has also retained Toshiko Mori Architects and Oasis Design Group to update the Gardens’ master plan. When complete, the new master plan will provide the Gardens with a road map for the future. Additionally, the front of the Gardens will look very different this year. We have been designated as a Proven Winner’s Signature Garden that will transform our front entrance gardens into a colorful and spectacular display. As you visit the Gardens this summer, you will also see modern sculptured art pieces by Shayne Dark on our front lawn and throughout the conservatory. Please stop in soon and join the year-long Birthday celebration!

David Swarts, President/CEO

This installation of work is a collaboration between Albright-Knox Public Art Initiative and the Botanical Gardens. This project is made possible, in part, through the generous support of the Albright-Knox Contemporary and Modern Art Foundation Canada and Charles Balbach. Canadian artist, Shayne Dark (b. 1952), has gained considerable attention for sculptures that he creates using elements found in nature, specifically locally sourced branches, limbs, roots and trunks of trees. Dark has considerable interest in the intersections of art and the natural world, and his work provides the ideal context for this collaborative exhibition. Situating Dark’s monumental works against the backdrop of the Lord & Burnham designed conservatory and nestled in a landscape originally crafted by Frederick Law Olmsted, this exhibition site provides breathtaking installation opportunities. In addition to several large scale works placed on the grounds of the Botanical Gardens, the artist’s work will be integrated into the greenhouse displays throughout the interior of the conservatory. The natural drama created by Dark’s striking use of bold color will complement and enhance the organic surroundings of the garden, blooming together in a magnificent and harmonious display. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Albright-Knox Public Art Initiative will host a one-week residency for the artist at the Botanical Gardens September 14-20. Dark will source local organic material to create a sitespecific installation. In keeping with his practice, Dark will focus on materials in the region that have fallen due to natural circumstances or as a result of the end of their life-cycle. These materials will find new life in the hands of the artist. The residency will offer direct insight into the artist’s creative practice and allow visitors to see the evolution of the work from raw materials to finished installation.

Proven Winners & Our New Signature Garden After this incredible winter, everyone is thinking about the beautiful growing season that is almost here! Last summer, we applied to be designated as one of six elite Proven Winners Signature Gardens in the country through Proven Winners®. These Proven Winners Signature Gardens represent an elite group of properties that showcase exceptional garden presentations We are extremely proud to announce that our Botanical Gardens was chosen! Our Proven Winners Signature Garden will create amazing plant and color combinations that will enhance the first impression of our gardens and provide a showcase garden that visitors can translate at home. Over the next several months, we will be working closely with Proven Winners® and installation will begin soon. The Proven Winners Signature Garden will include a transformation of the outdoor front entrance gardens. In order to build a solid foundation for these gardens, we will also be installing an automated irrigation system. This will ensure that best plant offerings from the number one plant brand in the world are full, vibrant, happy and healthy. This partnership will allow us to provide seasonal interest to the outdoor gardens and set a framework to display plants in a way that has never been done before at our Gardens. “We are honored to offer our Proven Winners Signature Garden designation to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens - now one of only six designated properties around the country. We couldn’t be more pleased to be involved in this historical garden treasure and look forward to being included as part of their exceptional gardens.” said Tom Ewing of Proven Winners®. With this prestigious Proven Winners® designation, our goal is to present our Botanical Gardens as a regional showcase and our collaboration with Proven Winners® as a long term partnership that will evolve as we grow. When you visit this summer, enjoy the wonderful new Proven Winners Signature Garden and celebrate our new partnership with Proven Winners®! 3

Volunteers Do you have extra time and enjoy helping the community? If so, you should consider becoming a part of our volunteer family! You’ll get the chance to meet some friendly people, learn more about plants, and provide support for our evergrowing programs.

Join Us! Volunteer Orientation: September 3 - 10am-2:30pm There’s a lot to do! You might train as a horticulture volunteer and work inside and outside the greenhouses on plant projects. Or your choice might be to help maintain the facilities with carpentry, electrical, and maintenance work. Maybe you’d prefer administrative support work doing office/computer tasks. Or the individual training might tempt you to work in the Gift Shop. Training as a docent means you’d be working in our education department, doing hands-on activities with all ages. Finally, there are volunteers who help us out during our exciting special events and weddings. Branch out, turn over a new leaf, and come join our team! Karen Hammer

“Catering is a passion of mine and a labor of love. It’s so rewarding,” says Avi of Obviously Avi catering. 16 years ago, Avi got his first job as a dishwasher in a kitchen where he eventually earned the title of Executive Chef. Since then, he has transformed his love of cooking into his own successful catering company. “I create menus around the client. No events are ever the same. I create each event uniquely, blending cuisines. I always try to use local, organic produce” says Avi.

Personal and Family Memberships

Recently, Avi catered the Botanical Gardens’ Victorian Tea, which was a huge success thanks to his exquisite menu. Guests were able to enjoy water chestnut mousse with soy glazed bacon, a tea sandwich of Chinese barbecue eggplant, and coconut panna cotta as well as an assortment of many other dishes. Rather than heading straight to Pinterest boards for inspiration, Avi thoughtfully researched the Silk Road and meals traditionally prepared during this time period. His food undoubtedly complimented the theme and ambiance of the event, and we received great feedback from our guests. Obviously Avi Catering has been an exclusive caterer at the Gardens for over 6 years, and he has contributed his impressive talents to a wide variety of events from luncheons to wedding receptions. Avi kindly says, “Working with the Gardens is consistently fantastic no matter who is working or volunteering. There is always a great atmosphere”, and we feel the same way about him!
