Message from David Swarts, President & CEO Greetings to the friends of the Botanical Gardens! My hope is that you had a wonderful summer. Since I last reported to you in the spring edition of Under the Dome, I have continued my first year journey and what a wonderful experience it has been. The Spring Flower show was fantastic - our visitors raved about the beautiful and colorful flower arrangements. My thanks to our Gardeners and volunteers for again providing our visitors with a great flower show. The Easter Egg Hunt brought enjoyment to 500 children (young and old alike) and the annual Great Plant Sale was more successful than ever despite some inclement weather. We have seen significant growth in our membership with nearly 1000 new members since the first of the year and we are well on our way to reach an overall membership of 3000 in the near future. Not surprisingly, our admissions this year have seen over 25% increase over the same period in 2010. This is all great news and serves as a clear indication that the Gardens is becoming a destination for families to experience the beauty of our greenhouses, our splendid collection, wonderful programs and events. Speaking of events, Starry Night was outstanding. More than 3000 guests enjoyed sensational musical groups, delicious foods and wonderful weather. On July 27, the new administration building was dedicated at a ribbon cutting ceremony which was attended by elected officials, Board members and community leaders. A reception and tour of our beautiful facility rounded out the event. Many thanks to our gardeners, particularly Julie Hughes, volunteers, AmeriCorp associates and McKinley High School students for their work on the outdoor shrub garden. Always a special place to visit! While thier work continued throughout the summer, much of it was completed prior to the kick-off ceremonies of the National Garden Walk Festival, which the Gardens hosted in June. Also, two new exciting programs were inaugurated over the summer. One offering is an environmental/conservation education program for middle school students and the other established a horticulture certificate program which will be offered to the public this fall. Both demonstrate the Gardens’ commitment to environmental stewardship. The Gardens’ staff honored our dedicated volunteers at the annual summer picnic. Their continued commitment is unmatched! The First Annual President’s Report for Stakeholders was held in our new building on June 22. The turnout was fantastic and the stakeholders, mostly volunteers, had an opportunity to learn firsthand information about our financial status, restoration plans, new programming and events. A question and answer session followed. It was a valuable experience and we look forward to doing it again next year. We look forward to an exciting fall and winter! Our first Succulent Show and a fall plant and shrub sale will begin our season followed by the Orchid, Mum and Poinsettia shows. On a personal note, it has been an exciting nine months for me and I look forward to continuing this wonderful journey. Most of all, thank you for your continued support of the Gardens - by working together we can preserve and enhance this treasure for our community. Happy Holidays!

Think of all the planting, weeding, watering, raking, re potting, pruning, digging, transplanting and more that went on day after day by the Horticulture Volunteers maintaining the thousands of plants inside and out.

Think of the thousands of school children from early elementary to college-aged following Docents on a tour learning about plants and the environment or huddled in small groups doing a special class in botany!

Casual fine dining specializing in fresh seafood, steaks, and pasta dishes

Think of the multitude of smiles and thanks given by the Gift Shop Volunteers to the many thousands of guests who visit the Gardens or attend a special event. These are our first volunteers to meet our guests. They also clean and arrange stock, keep brochures current, rent audio tour materials, sweep, dust, and check purchases out! Kathy Paine

Think of the wide variety of clerical tasks our Administrative Support Volunteers help with; data entry, making signs, cards, forms on the copier, helping with some computer work, assisting with mailings, tallying hours, running the postage meter: You name it and these volunteers can do it! Think of the Facilities Volunteers who work along with staff to handle painting, scraping, moving everything from here to there and back, fixing doors, bridges, making display areas; if it can be done, facilities people will be working on it!
