A Message From Our Board Chair I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Society, Inc. It has been a pleasure serving on the Board for the last five and a half years, with a majority of my years as Treasurer. My tenure follows a line of dedicated leaders that continue to shape the future of our organization. The growth of the Gardens over the last five years has been truly inspiring to me. Our ultimate goal is to achieve self-sustainability through admissions, special events, seasonal shows, educational programs, loyal members and volunteers, philanthropic contributors and grants from those that believe and support our mission. I am dedicated to achieving this goal before my tenure on the Board of Directors expires. My hope is that the growth and recognition of our organization inspires you to help us achieve this goal. As this goal leads the path to achieving many of our longer range goals, including the completion of the master plan. If you are interested in more ways to help support this historic conservatory, please visit our website or contact the Development Director today! This fall and winter, the Gardens welcomes our members and their guests to experience the unexpected inspiration from the harmony between people and plants! The Succulent Show is a visitor favorite and the Fall Plant Sale will spruce up your gardens. Please join us for the Gala at the Gardens, an evening of gratitude and friendship surrounded by the beauty of the Gardens. Don’t forget about the Holiday Celebrations that are enjoyed by visitors of all ages! We have gained great momentum thus far in 2012 and hope to carry that through to the New Year. I am truly grateful to the Board of Directors, staff, members, volunteers, contributors and sponsors for their dedication, loyalty and support of our mission here at the Botanical Gardens!

Collecting the Stories of the Past: An Oral History of the Botanical Gardens “I remember one year as a child, coming to the Poinsettia Show at Christmas for our family pictures...” And so begins a story about one of the many memorable moments from past years at the Botanical Gardens. In an effort to broaden our historical records, we are seeking individuals who are interested in recording their stories to become part of our oral history. Oral histories spring from recorded interviews of an individual’s reminiscences. Topics can range from world changing events to everyday occurrences. We would be especially interested in capturing childhood memories, holiday events, famous people, or historic events (the Blizzard of 77, for example). If you have memories of the Gardens, or have a parent or grandparent who has memories, help preserve them by having them recorded for the Gardens. Once recorded, the interviews will become part of the historical archives and future displays. Some might be presented through the handheld headset devices that currently feature horticultural information or could be included in our developing history display. Adam Yetter - Photo Contest 2011
If you are interested in being interviewed, conducting interviews, or learning more about the project, please contact Nate Drag, Volunteer Coordinator at ndrag@buffalogardens.com or 827.1584 ext. 207.

Daniel has been creating artwork for over 20 years, working in various styles using watercolor, stained glass, oil and acrylics. His detailed drawings of architectural landmarks have developed into great gift items such as glassware and note cards. The matted prints of his original painting of the Botanical Gardens (above) are available in our gift shop. Also, a glass coffee mug showcasing his drawing of our building will soon become everyone’s favorite mug. The clear glass gives the etched ink on this mug an elegant look.
