I am pleased to report that since our last issue of Under the Dome, the excitement with which 2016 began has continued throughout the summer months. Thousands of guests attended Starry Night in the Garden. The musical groups were outstanding, the food and beverage tastings were better than ever and the weather was spectacular. We are very grateful to Star 102.5 for this amazing event which brings national artists to our community and provides significant assistance to help support the Botanical Gardens’ mission. Over 200 guests enjoyed Botanics and Brews in July. Guests were treated to a popular local band Breakaway, a craft beer tasting from Try-it Distributing and food from Oliver’s. It was a fun evening! In August, a gift gathering luncheon to support the our 2016 Gala at the Gardens was held at the Saturn Club. Attendees provided many items that will fill the auction baskets at this year’s Gala on September 30. See page seven for details.

July and August also brought summer art and botany camp to the Botanical Gardens. Our Education Department had a blast with lots of enthusiastic children. Campers had the opportunity to better understand the world art and plants. The hot and dry weather throughout the summer put extra stress on plants both inside the Conservatory and in our outdoor gardens. Our dedicated horticulture staff and volunteers did a great job nurturing our collection in these challenging conditions.

Please visit this fall for some wonderful exhibits featuring exotic succulents, mums and holiday poinsettias. Horticulture Certificate series will be returning this fall as will the Fairy Garden and the annual Digital Photo Contest. It is an exciting time to be part of the Botanical Gardens! Your continued support ensures that the Botanical Gardens will remain a viable part of the cultural landscape in our community.
Construction Update Due to unexpected structural issues discovered during the reconstruction of the greenhouses, the project was delayed but is expected to be completed by the end of September. At that time, the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Society, Inc. will begin building new exhibits in both greenhouses. Exhibits will feature an aquatic garden with new plantings, an exciting new water feature, redesigned plant exhibits and a new bridge over the returning koi pond. The popular water fall will be refurbished and will be surrounded by an exciting new Asian Rainforest featuring a moon gate and an Asian tea room. We anticipate the new exhibits to be installed and completed by the end of this year. We hope to see you soon and thank you for support! Dave Swarts, President/CEO

Docent Training - Class of 2016
New Sessions!
Begins September 8 or 10 $25 participation cost Are you a lover of gardening and botany? Do you love to share your passion with others, or do you enjoy learning and talking with the public? Are you looking to become involved in a rewarding volunteer experience? Consider becoming a docent at the Botanical Gardens, educating visitors of all ages! Docents lead tours, teach hands-on programs and help with many of our education events, such as field trip programs, Kids Day and Wegmans Family Days. Docents answer visitor questions during special plant exhibits and events, and assist Education staff in programs that inspire and educate visitors about all the Botanical Gardens has to offer. An education background is not required, but a high level of interest and enthusiasm is! If you have been trained as a docent in the past, and haven’t been involved recently, or would like a refresher you are welcome to attend training as well! This year there are two options for Docent Training. We are offering two sessions– interested volunteers can either be trained on Thursdays or Saturdays. Our Thursday training “track” is for those interested in field trips and tours, and our Saturday “track” is for those interested in our informal programs and tours. Docent training will begin on Thursday, September 8 or Saturday, September 10, depending on the chosen session. The training program requires a weekly commitment; concluding the week of October 13. We will celebrate with a graduation ceremony on Tuesday evening, October 18. Important note: Course must be taken with the commitment to become a docent. For those interested in learning more about botany and gardening and cannot volunteer, Horticulture Certificate Classes are offered on Saturdays starting September 10.

Volunteers Do you have extra time? Do you enjoy helping the community? If so, you should consider becoming a part of the Botanical Garden’s volunteer family! You can meet delightful people, learn about plants, and provide support for our ever-growing programs. Volunteer Orientation September 8 - 10am-2pm There is a lot to do! You might train as a horticulture volunteer and work inside and outside the greenhouses on plant projects. Or your choice might be to help maintain the facilities with carpentry, electrical, and maintenance work. Maybe you’d prefer administrative support work doing office/computer tasks. Or the individual training might tempt you to work in the Gift Shop. Training as a docent means you’d be working in our education department, doing hands-on activities with people of all ages. Volunteer orientation is also included in Docent Training. Finally, there are volunteers who do Special Events and help us out during the exciting special events and weddings at the Gardens. Branch out, turn over a new leaf, and join our team here at the Botanical Gardens!!! INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE! Karen Hammer

Leaves - Gold for Your Garden Use whole or chopped leaves as mulch around your perennials. During the winter, wind can dry out the roots, and swings in temperature can cause the roots to heave out of the ground. Mulch will help protect the roots. This is especially important when there isn’t any snow cover. To chop up leaves, rake the dry leaves onto a paved surface before running over them with a lawn mower. It’s easier to sweep up the bits from concrete than from your lawn. Pile whole dry leaves on top of your herbs, completely covering the plant. This insulates your plants enough to protect them from frost and extends your harvest for weeks. Use markers so you don’t forget where your plants are!
