It has been a very interesting and productive summer at the Botanical Gardens. The outdoor gardens, despite the significant rain we had in June, are looking very good. Our horticulture staff implemented new procedures to care for these gardens, which assigned several volunteers to maintain separate sections of the outdoor gardens. A friendly competition developed, and the end result was that the gardens look better than ever. Thank you to the staff and volunteers for a job well done. Starry Night at the Gardens in mid-June was another great success. The event was sold out with over 3,000 in attendance. We are grateful to Entercom Buffalo and Star 102.5 for producing this annual and very popular event that benefits the Gardens. Also, this summer the Gardens hosted an event called Botanics & Brews. This event attracted nearly 200 people, all of whom enjoyed craft beer from several local breweries, delicious snacks prepared by Oliver’s Restaurant and wonderful sounds from JJ Swing. The weather was great and because it was such a wonderful event, we plan to bring it back again next year!

Renovation Update County Executive Mark Polancarz and County Legislators allocated funds to reconstruct two of the original greenhouses built at the end of the 19th century. As the owner of the conservatory, Erie County is responsible for major capital improvements to the facility. To ensure that the iconic structure is around for future generations, Erie County allocated $3.9 million for the project. Reconstruction began in June, and the entire project is slated to be completed in June 2016. This summer, after all the plants in the two greenhouses and the Koi were relocated, thousands of glass panes along with window vent mechanisms and frames were removed. In August, scaffolding was put up around the dome’s shell and a plastic enclosure was erected. Future work will involve installing new heating, electrical and misting systems into greenhouses 2 and 3. I will continue to update you in future issues on the progress of this exciting project. When the reconstruction is completed, updates to the interior exhibits in the two greenhouses will be made. Our Board and staff are already working with Toshiko Mori Architects and Oasis Design on ways to improve the exhibit in the two houses. The new exhibit will definitely include the popular waterfall and Koi pond.

Palm Dome and Greenhouse 11 Maintenance work began on the exteriors of the main Palm Dome and greenhouse 11 in late June. The exteriors of both domes received several coats of fresh paint, and deteriorated wood framing was replaced. Your patience during the reconstruction and maintenance projects is greatly appreciated. Remember the Botanical Gardens is still open, so, please be sure to visit us visit this fall and enjoy our tropical paradise and beautiful succulent, mum and poinsettia exhibits. Thank you for your support, and see you at the Gardens soon.

Celebrate at the Gardens! As summer winds down and the fall weather kicks in, we are reminded of the wonderful summer we had here at the Botanical Gardens! We have had a multitude of weddings these past few months, each with their own unique and personal touches. There was a patriotic ceremony, which was perfect for the fourth of July weekend. We even had a Star Wars/Sci-Fi-themed wedding, complete with a Princess Leia flower girl! Over 3,500 wedding guests have come through the doors so far to celebrate with their loved ones. Our wedding receptions and other parties would not be possible without our caterers. One of the things that make our venue unique is that our clients are given a choice in their caterer from our exclusive list. Each of our current caterers have all brought something different and exciting to the Gardens. Our goal is to always offer our clients a range of options that will help to accommodate each person’s budget and taste. Beginning in September 2015, we are extending the opportunity for other local caterers to apply for a position to be on our exclusive list. If you, or someone you know, would like to become part of our Garden family, please visit our website at www.buffalogardens.com for more information. Many people do not realize that when you have an evening event at the Gardens, the entire facility is available to you and your guests. We generally set up in multiple rooms, which allows for a unique experience where your guests will be able to view the conservatory in a non-traditional setting. Rental fees go back into preserving this beautiful historic landmark. Summer wedding season may be our busiest time of the year, but our beautiful gardens are open all year long. Choosing the Botanical Gardens for your next holiday party, shower or any other type of event will be an opportunity for you to experience this wonderful Western New York gem.

Visit our Gift Shop! The Gift Shop has added a new vendor. We are now carrying Susan Lanzano’s 2016 calendar that will inspire all gardeners each month. Susan’s exquisitely delicate watercolors offer a unique interpretation of botanical painting. She works in a range of styles, from spontaneous Oriental brush painting on raw rice paper to highly realistic, detailed renderings in the Western botanical tradition. Susan’s inspiration always comes from direct observation of nature. She is fascinated by the movement and spirit of botanical life, and her goal when she paints is to bring others to the same intimate relationship with nature that she experiences. Several years ago, Susan teamed up with a graphic designer to produce a calendar based on her work. This allowed her to share her art with a much wider audience than she could with her paintings alone. It has been especially gratifying for her to have her own expressions of her deep love of nature made available to people through some of the finest botanical gardens around the country. As she says, “It feels like coming home!”
