The Orchid Show, Night Lights, Taste of Paradise, Easter Egg Hunt and the Spring Flower Show were highly successful. In fact, Night Lights 2014 began with a wonderful preview kickoff party sponsored by Buffalo Spree Magazine. Despite the coldest weather in decades, the light show attracted thousands of visitors. The Great Plant Sale was again very successful. We also offered many other events this year including, the Honey Bee Festival, Science Café-“Indulge – Delectable Botanical Luxuries”, Tree Tours, Hosta Show, Iris, Daylily and Hosta Sale, Junior Botanist Camp and for the first time, a full-day Art and Botany camp. While all this was happening, we opened a monarch butterfly exhibit. With the assistance of Dave O’Donnell from the Eastern Monarch Butterfly Farm, the exhibit opened on June 8 with great enthusiasm. The butterfly and the bee hive exhibits are excellent teaching opportunities, since they demonstrate the important role these threatened pollinators play in sustaining life on our planet. Also, a special thank you to Gary and Deborah Hill for their generous gift which was used to install interpretive signage for the butterfly exhibit. After many years of planning, an outdoor Healing Garden broke ground in July. This garden will provide visitors with a contemplative and informative setting emphasizing the important role plants have on enhancing our physical and mental health. Mercy Hospital, part of Catholic Health and Plant WNY were instrumental in making the Healing Garden a reality.
Our Amorphophallus titanum (Corpse Flower) named Morty bloomed in early August. This spectacular event brought thousands of guests to the Gardens to view this rare plant and to experience its less than appealing fragrance.

Ex-Officio Directors
In early January, our Board Chair, Miche Needham, organized a “field trip” for Board members and staff to visit Pittsburgh’s Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The primary purpose was to learn firsthand what steps Phipps took to make a remarkable facility even better. All who attended came back determined to develop and implement plans to upgrade our own facility.
The outdoor gazebo which was donated by Rich Products and installed by Ellicott Development in our beautiful Perennial Peace Garden provided an ideal setting for many weddings throughout the spring and summer.

Greetings! As summer comes to a close, it is a good time to reflect on the wonderful events and experiences that have occurred at the Botanical Gardens so far this year.
Our horticulture team is hard at work to ensure that the fall succulent, mum and poinsettia exhibits are better than ever. In addition to these events, there will be many other reasons to visit the Gardens this fall including: Horticulture I and II Certificate Classes, the Gardens’ annual Gala on September 26 and we will offer another Science Café – Illuminate: Science and Art through ‘Burchfield Botanicals’. Check out more details in this edition. Additionally, there are many projects we are working on which will improve the overall visitor experience. Plans for the full reconstruction of the north dome and adjacent low greenhouse are moving forward and construction will begin in April 2015. The Board of Directors is also working on revising the Gardens’ master and strategic plans. As you can tell, it has been a very busy year. But upon reflection, none of this would have been possible without our Board of Directors’ leadership and the dedicated efforts of our staff and volunteers. More importantly, it is our members, sponsors, donors and visitors who make the difference. Thank you for your support and see you at the Gardens soon.
Dave Swarts, President/CEO

Celebrate the Holidays!
We welcomed Morty the Corpse Flower (and his two monstrous siblings) to our plant collection in July. We were in awe of visitor interest and the gigantic scale and cellular transformation we witnessed while it grew. The Monarch Butterfly exhibit showed the importance of botany necessary to feed and sustain butterflies and how everyone can garden at home to help their populations. Our beneficial insect and Integrated Pest Management program is in full swing doing the necessary management of plant pests without pesticides. This helps to maintain a green and natural balance here in our beautiful biome. We have doubled the size of the Begonia Collection with the donation of a local nursery. The Healing Garden is on its way to completion! Hosting hundreds of healing and medicinal plants that can enhance natural health and well-being.
