l OO years and counting

July l brings a combined 100 years of publishing about our great industry. Along with Building Products Digest's recent celebration of its 20th anniversary, we this month celebrate the 80th anniversary of our original publication, The Merchant Magazine. Founded as The California Lumber Merchant in 1922 under the vision of Jack Dionne, the magazine continued with the leadership of Al Bell and until recently David Cutler. Since its founding, each and every issue has tried to live up to the original vision of Jack to induce lumbermen to create

markets fbr lumber.

Looking at Jack's first editorial in 1922 the philosophy was :

- We believe that it is just as necessary to create MARKETS for lumber as it is to make lumber.

- We believe that the prosperity of the lumber industry depends on the effbrts of lumbermen to induce people to invest their money in necessary and useful buildings rather than less valuable things.

- We believe that the more ways we show people how to use building materials, and the more skillfully we

bring those things to their attention, the more of these materials they will buy.

- We believe that the retail lumberman is the custodian of a great trust. That his position is in reality a stewardship, so great are his possibilities tbr good in his community.

Could that have really been written 80 years ago'? Although the industry has evolved, the channels of distribution have changed, and the complexities of doing business have grown, these words still hold true.

The premise that Building Products Digest and The Merchant Magazine should work in every way for the best interests of the industry in every part of the region we cover, is lived up to as we travel thousands of miles. call hundreds of businesses, and publish the most current news of any industry publication. Each month we are trusted to do the right thing, a position we take very seriously.

This milestone for both publications comes with many thanks to our readers, our friends, and in particular to our advertising partners, who allow us to publish these magazines. We have survived over the many years, month in and month out, due to the support of many companies who have valued their return on investment when partnering with us. Over and over again we hear that we are the most READ magazines in the induslry. and that makes our passion just boil over.

In Jack's words: "We will try to invest the lumber business with the enthusiasm we feel for it, with the sentiment that we see in it, and with the halo that the title 'Home Builders of the Nation' confers upon it."

Thank you.

A LTHOUGH some in the lumber

Aindurtry fear that media misinformation about treated wood has scared off many consumers, a newly released survey reveals thatl5To of U.S. homeowners are willing to use treated wood in their homes.

The study, "What Do U.S. Homeowners Think about Treated Wood?", was conducted in 2001 by Louisiana State University's Richard Vlosky and Todd Shupe and queried nearly 500 homeowners on their perceptions of treated wood.

| . Treated wood vs. other materials

Homeowners rated concrete and steel as the most durable building materials, followed by hearty wood species like cedar and redwood. Treated wood was ranked fourth, ahead of only untreated wood in the | | -25 year durability category.

Over two-thirds of respondents believed that treated wood would last I l-25 years in exposed conditions.

Approximately half of those surveyed felt that plastic and steel caused the most environmental damage, whereas 387o felt that treated wood was environmentally harmful to produce.

2. P"rrrptions about treated wood

Only 5Vo of homeowners had a negative perception of treated wood. Almost half l40vo) had a positive perception of treated wood and nearly a quarter had "a very positive" view of the product.

Out of 327 respondents who said they would use treated wood in their home, 427o lived in the South, 677o were male and 5lVo had a college degree.

For the 25Vo who said they would not use treated wood in their homes, the greatest concern was the perceived health risks, followed closely by a concern about long-term exposure to the product.

Respondents received their information on treated wood, in order of frequency, from friends, magazines, newspapers and television.

Other findings included: 54Vo would pay a premium for

Homeowners had

great difficulty naming treated wood brands, treated wood over the non-treated alternative, 497a felt they understood the concept of wood treating,

. 457o believed that using treated wood can reduce deforestation, and .27Vo trtst claims made by treated wood manufacturers.

8. Applications and purchases

Over half 62qo) of respondents said they have decks made of treated wood at their homes. Exactly half have landscape timbers and 3'17o have some other type of outdoor structure made of pressure treated wood.

A quarter of the homeowners said they planned to buy landscape timbers in the next 12 months, l97o plannedto purchase decking and 177o had plans to purchase treated fence posts or rails.

Nearly a quarter of homeowners have hired a contractor or remodeler in the past l2 months for a treated wood project.

Only 2l%o knew what a Consumer Information Sheet was.

4. soyrty irru",

Sixty-nine percent of homeowners felt that treated wood is safe for humans in outdoor applications. Over half (55Vo\ felt it was safe if handled and disposed of properly. About half said it was safe for builders to use.

Sixty percent said that they wanted more information on treated wood products, although they indicated that treated wood manufacturers were the least trustworthy source for information on the safety of treated wood products.

The survey also revealed that homeowners consider environmental orpanizations as the

most trusted source for information on the safety of treated wood.

Other findings included:

. 37Vo believed that treated wood is safe for children's outdoor play equipment,

. 34Vo said it was safe for pets or farm animal exposure, and

, 33Vo believed that some types of treated wood are safer than others, while two-thirds were not sure.

a-

O. Brands and chemicals

Homeowners had great difficulty naming treated wood brands. Many of the names they cited were not actually treated brand names. The only treating chemical that was widely recognized (10Vo) was creosote. Familiarity with all other chemicals listed was very low.

Seventy-one percent felt that arsenic posed a significant risk to human health. The perception of health risks dropped sharply with the remaining chemicals listed. Many of those surveyed had no opinion on many of the chemicals listed.

ara

lo.Termites

Homeowners felt overwhelmingly (88%) that steel was the best building material to combat termites. Only onethird believed that treated wood greatly protects against termite damage.

Of the 22Vo who said they were familiar with Formosan subterranean termites, 65Vo were from the South and 9lVo felt that the pests had the potential to cause serious damage to the houses. Treated wood was cited by 26Vo as a preventative measure asainst the termites.

THE QUALITY ol'service providI ed by your supplier. Availability. Price. All valid considerations in looking for a source for engineered lumber.

Product perfbrmance, at least for most applications, should not be a worry. According to Jeff Linville, manager of technical services for the American Institute of Timber Construction: "Most (engineered wood) manufacturers' products are certifled by third party agencies, either AITC or APA, to meet or exceed the industry standard." The quality stamp provides a guarantee as to how the product should perform.

As one glulam industry consultant generalized, "Every manufacturer has to comply with the same standards. so the beams are pretty much the same."

Still, Linville notes that a few manufacturers build higher capabilities into their products (such as a stronger 3000F glulam instead of the typical 2400F beam).

0lulons

Glued laminated timber, or glulam, is a stress-rated product comprised of wood laminations ("lams") that are bonded together with strong, waterproof adhesives.

Glulam components can be a variety of species, and individual "lams" are typically 2" or less in thickness.

Glulam's reengineering improves strength and stiffness over comparable dimensional lumber and eliminates natural performance variations.

l-foists

I-joists are "I"-shaped engineered wood structural members that offer

strength, versatility and economy for use in residential and light commercial applications. Ijoists are comprised of top and bottom flanges of various widths united with webs of various depths. The flanges resist common bending stresses, and the web provides outstanding shear performance.

I-joists can be manufactured using solid sawn lumber or structural composite lumber for the flange components, and plywood or oriented strand board for the web.

type, laminated

The most common veneer lumber, is created by layering dried and graded wood veneers with waterproof adhesive into blocks of material known as billets. Cured in a heated press. LVL is typically available in various thicknesses and widths and is easily worked in the field using conventional construction tools.

In LVL billets, the grain of each layer of veneer runs in the same direction, rather than cross-lamination which is typical of other engineered wood products such as plywood. The resulting parallel-laminated lumber out-performs conventional lumber when either face- or edge-loaded. LVL is a solid, highly predictable and uniform engineered wood product that is sawn to consistent sizes and is virtually free from warping and splitting.

Other types of structural composite lumber include parallel strand lumber and oriented strand lumber.

Rim Boord

Rim board is a specially designed component that is engineered to work in concert with wood l-ioists to deliver

According to Mike Hunsaker, former general sales manager of Willamette's engineered wood business: "The former Willamette brands, with the exception of glulam, will be folded into the TrusJoist structure and marketed under the TrusJoist name. Glulam is likely to utilize its existing brand recognition while reporting to the TJ organization."

nThe StrucJoist, Struclam and Easy Rim names will be phased out, and the I-joists, LVL and rim board will adopt TrusJoist's brand names.

A new glulam group will be formed that reports to TrusJoist. "The glulam business was a well-run business before, so we plan to continue sales operations as our customers are accustomed to," said Nate Jorgensen, TJ's v.p. of residential operations.

The glulam group will be led by former Willamette Southern Region sales manager Chris Degnan, who is currently assembling a glulamfocused sales and support team. Management, inside sales and cus-

a complete engineered wood framing solution. Rim board fills the space between the sill plate and the bottom wall plate, or between the top plate and bottom plate in multi-floor construction. In addition to filling the void, rim board is an integral structural component that transfers both lateral and vertical forces. To function properly, the rim board must match the depth of framing members, and conventional solid sawn lumber typically does not match the new generation of wood I-joists.

APA Performance Rated rim boards can be manufactured using plywood, OSB, glulam or LVL. Depending on the product used, building material suppliers can deliver APA Performance Rated Rim Boards in lengths up to 24 feet. These engineered wood rim boards have greater dimensional stability, higher strength,

"By the end of the year, most of the former Willamette distributors will have switched either to the TrusJoist brands or to competing products," Hunsaker said. "It will be a mutual selection process. I anticipate the bulk majority (of those who remain) will be in the glulam product lines, however Weyerhaeuser is committed to honoring all distribution agreements Willamette had in place."

Willamette distributors in the South include Stringfellow Lumber in Alabama and Georgia, United Forest Products in the Carolinas, Sound Structures in Virginia and the Carolinas, Structural Connections in Florida, and TimberTech and Snavely Forest Products in Texas.

Months after acquiring Willamette, Weyerhaeuser seems well on its way to integrating it into its overall structure (see story, p. 24.

Excel qs on engineered soles Gonsullanl Srep lhro: Checklisrs build credibility

EROM an engineered lumber sales I' rep's perspective. the builder's need for a trustworthy design source is not always immediately obvious, especially since builders universally ask, "Isn't there a cheaper way?"

With price the one consistent objection, it seems pretty simple to just make sure they get a cheaper product and voila, you'll get the sale. The truth is that the price objection is just one way builders use to flush out sales reps who don't know their business. Builders will pay more if the rep can justify the cost difference to them. If the rep has done his part right, the builder will be able to prove to his customer (the home buyer) that he's made certain product decisions and why they cost more. When your builder looks to you as a trusted designer/fiaming consultant, he's also relying on the information you give him as justification to the home buyer.

There are lots of ways to get to this point, but to start, the fundamental basis of a trusting relationship is professionalism and credibility in the sales rep. Easy for me to write, but much more complex to pull off in real life, but only if you let it be. Just keep in mind what all of your competitors do: (a) get plans, (b) provide a drawing and design, (c) show that

the work has been done, and finally (d) tell the builder that it meets code and is the cheapest alternate. This is a straightforward sales process, and creates a false sense of security to the sales rep who relies on this method, primarily because it's easy to get short-term success. Many builders, anxious to latch onto some kind of reasonably priced alternate will accept this sale because they only want to "hear" that the design is correct and adequate. Many have no idea what

the design entails, nor what they're buying. There's only short-term credibility and no professionalism in this approach, though.

Great sales reps go a step further and make sure that they can effectively communicate their design solution and, as importantly, demonstrate that the design meets the criteria for that builder and for that project. Seems simple-and it is! There are lots of approaches to take, but let's look at the simple version, a checklist:

Residential Design Sheet ROOF

The fundamental basis of a trusting relationship is professionalism and credibility in the sales rep.
FLOOR Floor Live Load PSF Roof Live Load_FEF Duration Other Live Load PSF Floor Dead Load-PSf Olher Live Load_PSF Roof Dead Load_PSF n 100% o 115% Q 1257o Joist deoth O.C. spacinq Deflection as4t2' 4ft78', tr 14' tr 16' I Mostcostefficienl tr 12" D 16" o 19.2' J24" tr Most cost efficient tr Code min. The checklist can be a verbal one or a formal typed up version for file. I recommend the formal version. It is more professional.

Notice in the sample checklist there are options in each product category. This allows the builder to make conscientious decisions about his project. If the plans were spec'ed in 2x10s at 16" o.c., the rep can check off a9-l/2" joist at 16" o.c. (a simple switch of dimension for I-joist), or suggest that a deeper joist at a wider o.c. spacing (such as 19.2") could be reviewed, too. When your builder says he wants the cheapest, the rep can ask if 24" o.c or code minimum would be adequate. Many builders, even the ones who claim they want cheap, don't want a 24" o.c. system, and once they see the code described as a "minimum" criteria, may back out of their "cheap" request. The truth: they really don't want the cheapest system, only the least cost for a well desiened floor. That's a big difference.

Don't assume you know what is best for the builder, a fault that many seasoned reps make. Always, always go into every project with an open mind, have your checklist ready and ask questions. There could easily be changes in what your builder is dealing with-a particularly demanding homeowner, a change in the project that affects the floor system, or a problem the builder's embarrassed to mention. Never assume. Many reps try to argue away their assumptive sales approach under the guise that they "know their customer so well that they don't need to ask anymore." If you believe this, it should set off a red flag that says you've become complacent. No one, including yourself, wants to hear another person claim they "know" you.

The key here is to get the information up front. You are doing the builder a favor and yourself by positioning yourself as a trusted source if you get it right or even close to right the first time. Let the other guys fumble around trying to cheapen their designs after the builder says it costs too much, because they didn't do any up-front research.

In addition to your checklist, there are more things to learn: how are the other homes in the area built? What can you tell the builder about similar jobs you've done? What was accepted or considered bad? If you've got your checklist and priorjob knowledge that illustrate your points, you'll have a

captive ear and the trust of the builder.

To illustrate, here are the two opposites:

Sales Rep A gets the plans, $ hands off to a "tech guy" to run the design, gets the plans back, and delivers them (usually unchecked or only casually checked to see that the price is about right) to the builder. The builder complains, "The price is to high. Can't you sharpen your pencil a bit on this?" The rep goes back, finds that the joists can be reduced in size or the o.c. spacing changed or some other cost cutting feature to cheapen the price, and returns with an alternate design and the cheaper price.

Sales Rep B gets the plans and asks for five to l0 minutes to review the project to make sure he understands the requirements. He pulls out the checklist and uses it as the basis for making joint decisions, referring to the plans as needed. Options are reviewed and noted on the checklist. Additional questions are asked in this process. Open-ended questions can be: "I'll put together the estimate based on what we just went over. Are there any other considerations that are important here?" Or, "Any special architectural constraints or unusual situations that I should be aware of?" Closed-ended questions need to be specific and germane to the plan: "Who do you have lined up to frame this house?" (You may know that certain framers are notorious for forgetting to add the necessary parts and pieces that get the job red-tagged.) "Do you have product sheets on the plumbing fixtures so we can make the adjustments for plumbing penetrations?" "It looks like the main beam in the crawlspace or basement is not lined up under a bearing wall. This may create an overload for the floor joists to carry the bearing wall. Do I have the flexibility to move that beam so they line up?"

When the rep hands off the plans to the "tech" guy, the drafter has all the pertinent information to get the job designed right the first time. Really good reps go a step further and instruct the drafter to provide one or more options in the design. This rep also reviews the plans and creates an estimate with the "as specified" requirements and any additions or deductions to the original. When the plans and estimates are delivered to

the builder, the drafted plans are rolled out, and the original checklist is attached. The rep summarizes the key points of the plan, referencing the spec sheet, and comments on any special structural changes or plumbing modifications. The builder may still ask, "Can't it be done any cheaper?" and to this, the rep has his alternates in hand and is prepared to discuss.

A lot more has happened in the sales situation with Sales Rep B, and this comes at a cost. That cost is spending l0 to l5 more minutes up front, possibly an hour or more of additional drafting time for the tech guy, and certainly an hour or more of time for the sales rep to review the drafter's work and prepare alternate estimates. Is this more time than Rep A spends? Not really. Rep A and his tech guy spent the same amount of time, only shifting it from useful time for the benefit of the builder to wasted time in traveling to visit the builder an extra time because the first estimate was too high, having the tech guy work twice (probably interfering with another job the second time), and creating no value in the eyes of the builder other than being a delivery boy with a price. Take the time up front to do it right. Use a checklist, supervise the drawings, and demonstrate to your builder that you know your business and how to make his project work. Do this to build credibility, and the price will drop from being the only subject to just a footnote.

MOST BUILDERS are less concerned with the uofront prlce of engineered wood than the long-term "cost" of the purchase.

ful l -service providers

IX/HAT is a successful full-service lumber transportaV Y tion provider? What distinguishes it from a typical lumber reload?

Obviously, significant amounts of lumber are produced in remote regions of Canada and the U.S. Traditionally, mills are located close to timber supply. If the mill is not served directly by rail, production must be trucked to a rail head to ship to the marketplace. This is needed because lumber transportation is still cheapest by rail, particularly in specially designed "centerbeam" railcars or flatcars.

Basically, a reload unloads a truck and then reloads the lumber onto a railcar. This type of operation is typically called an "origin" reload. Once the railcar completes its journey, it is unloaded at a "destination" reload, where it then completes its journey to the customer by truck.

A reload may be little more than an unpaved yard accessed by a road and rail spur, manned by a small crew operating a couple of forklifts. Usually, these reloads operate on a fee-for-service basis charging per MFBM loaded or unloaded. They satisfy producers and buyers who arange their own truck transport to the reload, negotiate with rail lines for rates and car supply, prepare their own documentation, time the market appropriately, and arrange for additional services such as labeling and barcoding. However, producers and buyers who want to focus on their core competencies may look to full-service transportation providers.

Several factors distinguish the full-service provider from the typical reload, including freight booking and negotiating expertise, close relationships with core rail and trucking providers, control of railcar and truck supply, strategic locations accessible to road and rail, modern computer and inventory systems, and dedicated crews to load and unload.

The first step in building a successful lumber transportation operation is identifying strategic locations or reloads that offer the best combination of rail and road access to mills and rail access to the marketplace. An origin reload is based close to supply while a destination reload is near the market. Each type of reload operates in a similar, yet opposite fashion. The processes are the same, yet an origin reload generally unloads trucks and loads railcars while a destination reload unloads railcars and then loads trucks.

Designing either type of reload is relatively simple if there's an abundance of space. A rectangular yard would accommodate a rail spur running down the center of the yard, capable of spotting a number of railcars that can be loaded or unloaded from either side. Truck access lanes run the length of each side of the spur, crossing it at one end. Inbound trucks can be tallied immediately upon enter-

ing the yard and then directed to specific inventory locations for unloading. It is critical at this stage to ensure all lumber packages are labeled for easy identification. If not, labels are produced and affixed to the packages during the manual tally process. Lumber is unloaded and stored around the perimeter of the spur, allowing easy access to forklifts and the rail spur itself. Unloaded trucks then cross the spur and exit the yard on the other side. Similarly, outbound trucks enter the yard empty and are directed to a specific location in the yard for loading. Loaded trucks then exit on the other side of the spur, subject to a final tally and documentation immediately prior to exit.

If the reload handles weather-sensitive products such as OSB or MDF, a portion of the rail spur should be aligned with a dock of appropriate height to permit boxcar loading. Today, moving lumber by boxcar is relatively inefficient since they carry less and are more difficult to load than custom-designed centerbeam railcars, so they are generally used only for weather-sensitive products. Shipping weather-sensitive product also requires covered warehouse space for pre-shipment storage. The warehouse should directly access the dock and provide sheltered inbound unloading.

The facility should be fenced and well lit for night-time operation. It is often necessary that truck unloading and railcar loading be scheduled to allow the most efficient use of manpower and forklift equipment thereby accommodating the timing of the railcar switch (when railcars are pulled into and out of the yard each day). Scheduling can be critical because long lines of trucks waiting to be unloaded can be disastrous for customer relations. Often it is necessary to unload trucks during one shift, then divert all resources to loading cars on another shift, prior to the railcar switch.

Paving the facility and installing adequate drainage is far more than a luxury. ln unpaved yards, product becomes dirty and lumber stacks must be lower and can topple on uneven ground. Uneven, wet ground is very hard on forklifts and trucks, both for traction and maintenance.

If designed to these basic specifications, the reload facility is well suited for handling lumber products. However, at this point the facility is only as good as its railcar supply. Usually, railcars are ordered by the reload and delivered on scheduled switches each day. Loaded cars are pulled from the yard, inspected by railway company crews for "railworthiness" in accordance with AAR standards, and empty cars are then switched into the yard for loading.

Railcar supply depends entirely upon lumber demand. At peak periods-and during merger-mania in the late '9Os-the railways frequently could not deliver sufficient railcars to meet demand, leaving shippers stranded and fiustrated. To mitigate this problem, many reloads own or lease their own private fleets, which they then rent back to the railways. The private fleets are reverse routed, leaving the reload loaded and returning empty several weeks later. Reloads with private fleets control a portion of their railcar supply, positioning them to provide more reliable service.

The most common types of specialized lumber-carrying

railcars are 60', 73' and 8l' centerbeams with capacities of about 94 MFBM, I l2 N,tper4 and 125 MFBM respectively. Although less efficient, the railways also provide 50', 52' and 66' bulkheads and boxcars. These durable cars are more likely to become obsolete before wearing out. For instance, new prototype 73' centerbeams with dropped wells capable of carrying 130 NapsN,{ are currently being tested and may set the next standard for lumber carrying.

The transportation provider will work closely with the railways to market their rates and services. In many cases, the reloader is closer to the market and provides valuable information and access to existing and potential customers. Furthermore, the reloader can work with the railway and the customer to access new markets for their product. By providing volume-based freight rates or other incentives such as rebates and capital assistance, the reloader can pass these benefits on to customers.

The full-service transloader must also work closely with trucking companies. The keys of successful trucking are control over trucking supply to ensure that pick-ups and deliveries occur as scheduled and that rates are competitive.

Company-owned trucks can virtually guarantee reliable service to locations that may not be competitively serviced by independent contractors; however, the reloader does assume additional financial risk and administrative overhead by investing in and managing its own truck fleet.

Another valuable service is the ability to hold customer inventory and to ship as required. Maintaining inventory positions at reloads is increasing in popularity, to the point where shipping from inventory is surpassing the traditional business of "hot loading," "back-to-back," or "cross-dock" shipments, where product is loaded directly from truck to

railcar and vice-versa.

Providing the inventory service does not stop at unloading and stacking product in the reload. Full-service providers may implement inventory systems to report detailed on-hand inventory statistics and provide customer access to this information via the Internet or by modem. Working with the customer, sales systems can be developed and integrated with inventory systems allowing the customer to book and track future deliveries and shipping commitments using the reload's software and databases.

Other value-added programs include wrapping, rewrapping, labeling, barcoding, resorting or pulling packages to length, half-packing, trimming product, and limited remanufacturing. It can be more economical for such services to occur at the reload, especially for wholesalers that do not own their own manufacturing facilities, or producers that are constrained by production limitations.

The typical reload is only one component of a successful ful l-service transportation operation.

Activists mar NAWLA annual meeting

Environmentalist protests and arrests surrounded the annual meeting of the North American Wholesale Lumber Association in Colorado Springs, Co.

Three activists, reportedly from the Oregon-based Cascadia Forest Defenders, illegally entered the Broadmoor Hotel June l0 during the meeting, sneaking onto the roof where they hung a 45-ft. anti-timber industry banner. Police officials estimate that 30 individuals from Colorado and the Pacific Northwest protested outside the hotel during the three-day event. Activists accused NAWLA of promoting old growth logging and initiating needless cuts.

A NAWLA spokesperson denied the allegations, saying "We have repeatedly pledged to take all steps to identify and conserve our forest resources."

The arrested activists apparently broke through a locked

door in the hotel, eventually trying to block police from entering. They were soon arrested without incident. Other protests in the surrounding streets were described as legal and peaceful.

At the meeting, NAWLA presented the 2002 Mulrooney Award to John Tyler "J.T." McShan, owner, McShan Lumber Co.. McShan. Al.

Newly elected officers include chairman Bob Owens, Owens Forest Products; lst vice chairman Tom Tomjack, North Pacific Group; 2nd vice chairman Brad Johansen, Welco Lumber; secretary/treasurer Roy Carroll, Peter Angus Forest Products, and immediate past chairman Doyal Marks, Marks Forest Products Co. New directors: Tom Deegan Jr., Lumbermen Associates; John Jayne, Disdero Lumber, and Mike Mordell, Universal Forest Products.

Scotty's Buys 17 Florida Units

Scotty's has acquired 17-unit Florida Do it Best Hardware from Tom Hansen, who formed the company l8 months ago after purchasing many of the units from Scotty's.

The newly acquired locations are in Bradenton, Clewiston, Daytona Beach, Fort Pierce, Hobe Sound, Indian Harbor Beach, Jacksonville, Kissimmee, MacClenny, Melbourne Beach, Port St. Joe, St. Petersburg, Starke, Titusville, Winter Park and two in St. Cloud.

Scotty's began operating the stores June 1, although the transaction was not expected to be completed for several weeks. Since they were recently remodeled and are performing well on the whole, the units will retain their Florida Do it Best name and signage.

Acquisiton of the 10,000-sq. ft. stores coincides with Scotty's sale of its last large-format location, an 80,000-sq. ft. site in Ocoee, Fl.

With the additions, Scotty's now operates 76 stores.

Weyco lntegrating Willamette

Executives at Weyerhaeuser Co. say that integration of former Willamette Industries operations is

nearly complete.

Officials have disbanded the interim operating committee that was set up last winter to run the acquired firm and newly appointed managers are now running the day-to-day operations of the combined company.

"We've had to make some difficult decisions to become more efficient and streamlined, but our integration process-involving employees from both organizations-helped us make the right decision," said v.p.-timberlands Rich Hanson.

As part of the integration process, on June 30 Weyerhaeuser closed its glulam plant at the former Willamette engineered lumber complex in Simsboro, La. Other operations at the site are unaffected.

Prior to the latest moves, 20 sales jobs were moved from the former Willamette regional office in Ruston, La., to offices in Hot Springs, Ar., and Fort Mill, S.C.

N.C. Dealer to Consolidate

McDonald Lumber will close its Dunn, N.C., building supply store at the end of this month.

According to owner Robert H. McDonald, the July 3l closure is part

of a plan to expand its two Fayetteville, N.C., locations.

Half of the company's l5 Dunn employees will be transferred to the Fayetteville locations.

"We felt we could serve our customers better through consolidation," said McDonald.

McDonald Lumber has been leasing a facility in Dunn since 1982.

OrgillTo Expand Georgia DC

Orgill, Inc. plans to expand the shipping capacity at its Tifton, Ga., DC this summer.

The Memphis, Tn.-based wholesale distributor expects the improvements will more than double the capacity of the facility, which now ships to 2,000 customers in 10 states.

"Most of the growth in Tifton has come from market penetration, not geographic expansion," said president Bill Fondren.

Construction on the facility is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2003.

The firm also expects that work on its new 76,000-sq. ft. corporate headquarters in Memphis will be completed in November.

Potlatch Expands In Softwoods

To rely more heavily on its own timber supply, potlatch Corp. will expand production at its southern pine mills in Warren and Prescott, Ar., by as much as 30Vo, while closing its Bradley hardwood mill in Warren.

The company's Arkansas timberlands are composed primarily of softwoods, forcing the Bradley mill to buy most of the oak it required from other companies.

The firm is currently installing additional dry kilns at both sites to help increase each mill's capacity to 230 million bd. ft. Potlatch bought the Bradley hardwood mill in Warren in 1958, curtailed production earlier this year, and has now put the facility up for sale.

Pine Council Touts New Treatments

While the transition to new-generation wood preservatives is underway, the Southern Pine Council has launched a proactive marketing initiative to position southern pine as the "species of choice" in all treated markets, regardless of treatment type.

Using various media, SPC plans to target retailers, builders, design/build professionals and consumer groups. The product locator on its Web site directs customers looking for alternatively-treated products to some 100 suppliers, and will be the subject of extensive promotion. SpC publications are being revised to reflect the new options for pressure treatment. New seminars and other educational efforts aimed at explaining the transition are underway for retailers as well as building code officials. Syndicated newspaper articles, trade ads, and other public relations activities will drive home the message that southern pine remains the species of choice for treatment with the new preservatives.
