Did you krow that there are three ways heat fansfers into your home? These are radiation, conduction, and convection. Of these three RADIATION, is the most dominant. In our long, hot summers, thi radiant heat energy from the sun can easily heat up roof shingles to 150- 190 degrees F. In turn, the temperature of your home's attic space soars! Then, this heat radiates down through the ceiling insulation and into your home causing your cooling system to work overtime. Standard insulations work to resist this process but why not BLOCK the Heat? There is an easy, cost effective way to do just that.
Summer Heat
SOTAR BOARD Radiant Barrier Slreathing, widr its polished alumintnn barrier reflects ttp to 97o/o of the radiant Heat away from your attic space. Your attic temperature is then reduced by 25-30 degees F and heat transferring throu$ your ceiling is reduced up to 50%o. Florida Solar Energy Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Texas A&M University, and other enerry experts have concluded that radiant barriers help reduce energy costs.
With SOTAR BOARD, you will increase the efficiency of your attic-mounted cooling system and ducts, improve the comfort level of your home, and save money on utility bills. You also improve comfort levels in non-air conditioned spaces such as garages and porches.

The G Word
In this case. the C stands for certified. as in certified wood and wood products. Behind the C word is the concept that wood must meet certain environmentally correct standards as it moves from forest through manufacturing and distribution to the final customer. Several organizations have been formed to ensure through audits that forests are managed according to internationally agreed principles and performance criteria so the customer is assured his purchase is from a forest having a balance between trees, plants, animals and the ecosystem.
As this concept moved from the still waters of theory to the churning waves of the marketplace, new voices began to be heard. Some said that while surveys indicate public acceptance of certification, the great majority, apparently, won't pay extra for certified wood. Others see it as a hopelessly utopian idea. Wholesalers and distributors claim few retailers ask for it. Retailers worry that they would need a double inventory if they sell both certified and non-certified wood. with all the cost implications of doubling up. How to sell and
handle a job with some of this and some of that is also a concern.
Skeptics charge that certification is nothing more than a stalking horse for the real aims of the environmentalists behind the movement, i.e., to eventually stop all timber harvesting so no trees are ever cut anywhere for any purpose.
Home Depot, an early enviro convert, has used its greenness to garner public support for the concept. Other retailers of varying size as well as some mills and wholesalers now are beginning to respond to certain buyers that will accept only certified wood.
Europeans are creating their own certification group, while America's Forest Stewardship Council is being attacked from within by the U.K.'s Rainforest Foundation. which accuses it of various failings. In New Zealand, Rayonier, after a two year trial, has dropped certification and the FSC as its forest auditor.
Stay tuned. This controversy promises to be a lengthy one.

L-P Wins Bidding War
Boise Cascade declined making a third counterbid, allowing LouisianaPacific to acquire Canadian OSB manufacturer Groupe Forex for approximately $5ll million.
Although Forex's directors in June approved L-P's initial offer of about $408 million, several weeks later, Boise Cascade bid nearly 20Vo more for the company. L-P responded with an offer of $475 million, and Boise made its final bid of $500 million.
Willamette Adding Panel Mill
Willamette Industries plans to build a particleboard plant in North or South Carolina with an annual capacity of 210 million sq. ft.
The company was scouting potential sites and expected to have made its decision by early this month. Site selection criteria included proximity to nearby sawmills and plywood plants for raw materials, appropriate utilities, rail and truck access to markets, and a good labor pool.
Raw materials will consist of pine residuals from local wood processing plants. "This particleboard plant will enable Willamette to further its vertical integration strategy in the East, as we've done in the West and South," says Jerry Taylor, general sales mgr. for Willamette's Rock Hill, S.C.-based Eastern region.
According to Taylor, the market for particleboard is growing at a little more than 4Vo per year and the industry is currently at 97Vo capacity, with no new production on the docket through 2000. Construction on the new plant should begin early next year, with it coming on line in 2001.
New South Adds N.C. Plant
Reportedly making it one of the 20 largest sawmill companies in the U.S., New South, Inc., Myrtle Beach, S.C., has acquired J.L. Sizemore Sons Lumber Co., Graham, N.C.
The acquisition is the first major step in New South's five-year growth plan to double its size and profitability. Within the last year, the company has invested about $10 million in upgrading operations in Camden and Conway, S.C., and plans comparable expenditures in the coming year.
J.L. Sizemore, founded in 1927, built a new manfaciuring facility four years ago, helping to transform the mill into one of the most successful sawmill operations in North Carolina.
Boise Cascade's George Harad said, "We believe our last offer fully and fairly priced Forex. To continue bid-
For Forex
ding at a price above the current offer would not be in the best interests of Boise Cascade and our shareholders."
Unlike L-P, which owns an industryJeading 12 OSB plants throughout North America (see rankings, p. 1ll2), Boise Cascade operates only one OSB facility in Ontario, Canada, and mostly sells in the West. Acquiring Forex's three plants in Quebec would have bolstered the move eastward for Boise Cascade, which is in the midst of acquiring distributor Furman Lumber.
L-P's purchase ofForex is expected to close this quarter.

SEVEN tips fofosBfetailing
QALES of OSB for new construcL)tion. remodeling, and do-it-yourself purposes have skyrocketed, placing more demand on retail sales staffs to know the product and its advantages for end users.
The following are six points to remember when selling OSB:
ONE
OSB isn't what it used to be. OSB evolved from waferboard in the late 1970s. There is a tendency for many homeowners still to confuse it with that product, or an even bigger misconception, non-structural particleboard. It is important to explain that OSB is much advanced in terms of structural integrity.
TWO
No longer can OSB be viewed as the less expensive structural panel. It has become a product purchased for value, not simply low cost. OSB prices, in many cases, are achieving parity with plywood.
THREE
Oriented strand board is just that: oriented. Thin, rectangular-shaped wood strands are not randomly placed. These strands are positioned lengthwise and crosswise in layers, and bonded with water resistant adhesives. Most panel edges are also treated with a sealant for moisture protection. The result is a stiff structural panel with flexible qualities.
FOUR
OSB and plywood must meet the same standards. All building codes in the U.S. and Canada recosnize OSB
panels for the same uses as plywood on a thickness-by-thickness basis. OSB is also recognized for structural use in Europe. In Japan, North American OSB is certified to meet the Japan Agricultural Standard for structural panels, among the world's most demanding and exacting certification marks.
OSB is an engineered structural panel. specifically manufactured for such structural applications as floor, roof and wal1 sheathing in wood frame construction. OSB panels boast superior holding capabilities even when nailed close to the panel edges. Despite differences in composition and appearance, OSB and plywood each share the same exposure durability classifications, performance standards and span ratings.
tion, racking and shape distortion or warping.
* OSB panels are made of real wood, a natural insulator. Panels are lightweight, easy to handle and install, providing good protection against heat loss and condensation.
* As a result of its high-tech manufacturing process, OSB panels do not have knots, core voids and splits found in other wood panels. Each panel is consistent and uniform, allowing for good workability (easy to saw, drill, nail, plane, file or sand) and nailability (many interweaved layers create strong nail holding properties).
srx
Oriented strand board is just that: oriented, FIVE OSB has distinct technical strengths:
* OSB has considerable structural strength, dimensional stability and bond durability resulting from the uninterrupted fiber, interweaving of the long strands and orientation of strands in the surfaced layers.
* OSB resists deflection. delamina-
OSB is environmentally friendly. The strands for OSB are produced from fast growing small-diameter trees in sustainable forests and plantations, obviating the need to log old growth timber. Production at mills is heat-powered by a portion of the harvested wood supply (recycled bark, screenings, sawdust and panel trim).
Resin binders and waxes are completely cured and stabilized, leaving no measurable off-gassing from panels.
SEVEN
Today's buyers want information. To increase sales of OSB, it's essential to understand its properties and efifective uses. lf you don't have enough information about oriented strand board, ask your supplier, APAThe Engineered Wood Association. or the Structural Board Association.

Steady growth slots OSB as top structural panel
l\TO PRODUCT has made more I \ sipnificant strides in the structural panJ market than OSB.
Since it was introduced more than 15 years ago, oriented strand board has gained increasing acceptance and
usage by builders and buyers, to the point that it is supplanting other structural panel products in key industry categones.
I n"OSB now has become the board of choice in roof, wall and floor applications," said Mark Angelini, president of the Structural Board Association. "Its use in new residential construction has outstripped that of other panel products."
OSB production in North America is expected to exceed plywood this year-dramatic progress considering OSB shipments have risen from scratch (zero market share from the early 1980s).
According to APAThe Engineered Wood Association, North

American OSB output last year reached nearly 19 billion sq. ft., up 12.27o from 1997.
Plywood panel production, however, slipped l.4Vo to 19.7 billion sq. ft., the lowest North American plywood total since 1982. Despite plywood's fall, OSB's increase helped propel total North American structural panel production 4.87o to 38.7 billion sq. ft.
0SB production in
North America is expected to exceed plywood this year,
APA forecasts that North American OSB production will increase from 19.2 billion sq. ft. in 1999 to 20.4 billion sq. ft. in 2002. Plywood production is expected to dip from 18.5 billion sq. ft. in 1999 to 18.3 billion sq. ft. in 2002.
Although economists are predicting that the galloping pace of housing starts in the United States will eventually slow this year, key factors point to OSB increasing its market share for

the foreseeable future:
o Diminishing timber supplies favor engineered wood panels, particularly OSB. Made from strands of small diameter trees, OSB gets almost twice the yield from trees as other structural panels. (There is no log core left in the OSB production process.)
o While built to the same perfbrmance standards, OSB is a less expensive product.
. OSB encourages the more environmentally friendly approach of harvesting small diameter plantation trees-underscoring the viability of a stable resource supply without felling old-growth trees.
. OSB can be custom manufactured to meet specific requirements in thickness, density, panel size, surf, ace texture, strength and rigidity.
o OSB's manufacturing process provides for consistent panels without knots, splits or core voids.

Goncrete evidence The case for concrete wall systems
A RE concrete wall systems, as prola, ponents claim, the "wave of the future" in residential construction?
By the year 2000, 7Vo of single family homes in the U.S. will be built with concrete wall systems, according to a market forecast by the Portland Cement Association.
Of the many insulating concrete form (lCF) systems. there are two prin-
up, nobody has to worry about stacked lumber soaking up rain,
cipal types. One uses hollow, interlocking polystyrene foam blocks that stack like masonry. The other uses foam panels with plastic ties to space them apart. Concrete is poured into steel-reinforced cavities in both systems to form walls of various thickNCSSES.
The stay-in-place foam forms supply insulation. Concrete supplies both insulation and strength.
Energy efficiency, earthquake and fire resistance, durability and maintenance ease have made ICFs popular in Europe for decades.
Contractor Michael Congdon has been acquainted with the ICF system for 25 years and recently completed two homes in the San Luis Obispo, Ca., area. Both are in the 2,600-3,000 sq. ft. range. One is Southwest Mission style, the other French Traditional.
Congdon finds the ICF system design flexible, quick to frame, and not victimized by adverse weather. During an El Niflo season, once the roof shelter is up, nobody has to worry about stacked lumber soaking up rain.
Costs of concrete and wood framing are comparable in the conventionally sized home, Congdon says. For large homes, ICF construction costs may
average lVo-lo%o higher than wood.
In addition, according to the California Cement Promotion Council, substituting concrete walls for wood framing can save up to 20 trees per house.
Other studies, say the council, have shown that concrete walls reduce sound transmission by more than twothirds over frame construction.
California architect Craig Smith claims that lower energy costs argue in favor of concrete, since the heavy duty wall system absorbs heat for interior dissipation and is a superb insulator.
An energy cost study at Boston University compared 29 concrete homes to 29 wood frame homes of similar square footage and age. The ICF systems cut energy used for heating by about447o andcooling32Vo.
Smith is impressed with the ability of concrete to locate in any climate and on any terrain. He also calls it a "malleable material" that accommodates any design concept. "If somebody wants Southwestern adobe," says the architect, "he gets Southwestern adobe. If she wants Cape Cod, she gets Cape Cod."

They took their annual plan, day planners, position descriptions, etc. They were to think, "What am I doing that I should not be doing?" and "What am I not doing that I should be doing?" The brain works much better when there is no stress or interruptions.
EI'ERE are 10 more activities that llthe top 2% of sales performers do-and do well:
(11) They look and act the part. Kennedy beat Nixon in the first televised debate, because Kennedy looked the part and spoke with vigor-or "vigah," as he pronounced it. He had it all that night: dark suit, tanned appearance and enthusiasm.
Nixon sweated and looked pale in his gray suit. Historians say that the election was won that night, even though radio listeners thought Nixon won the debate due to his content. Get a consultant to help you with your appearance, style and actions. Then get an engineer to help you with the technical side. Not the technical first.
(12) Prepare and stick to a plan. 98Vo of salespeople operate without a solid plan because they say they don't have time to plan. Start with a 12month plan and work it backward into quarters, to the month, to the week and then by the day.
Who will your next l0 clients be? When will they come on board? What vyill they buy? And how much will they buy? And how am I going to make it happen? I'm not talking about an unrealistic marketing plan, but a sales action plan. And review it weekly to beat deadline dates.
(13) Develop a Target Account Program. Identify three, five or l0
(14) Keep a voice recorder on your front seat to capture ideas that suddenly pop into your head. Use it to dictate letters while driving. One, you don't want to forget the ideas. Two, you save time by not dictating the letters in your office.
(15) Manage your time as if it is your major currency-because it is. Spend major time on major things, such as Target Accounts. Spend minor time on minor things, such as minor accounts. Don't invest the same amount of time on a $50,000 client as on someone who can buy $500,000. Harness your time so you have more time to make more money. I wrote this article on the weekendnot between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on a weekday. That's client time.
(16) Choose your role model carefully. Pick someone who is in the top l-2Vo. It may even be a competitor. Ask, "Who am I currently hanging around and what are they doing to me?" If you make $50,000 and truly want to make $150,000, do you hang around someone earning $50,000 or someone earning $1 50,000?
New entries to the speaking and consulting professions call constantly asking for my help as their role model. They hardly ever offer to help me in return. If I ask for their help, I get "I'm too stressed out" or "I'm too busy." These individuals will never make it to the top. They think WIIFM
I spend 100 days a year providing one-on-one executive and sales coaching-without interruptions. The sessions are better than classroom training, because we focus on the specific challenges for one specific person. Go alone or iurange for one-onone coaching. Use your brain not the odometer or frequent flier miles.
(19) Conduct a needs analysis with every prospect and every client. Ask questions such as, "How can I personally serve you better?" With a longtime prospect, try, "Sir, I have been calling on you for 17 months without success. I must be doing something wrong. Will you please tell me what it is?" Whatever the questions are, listen intently to every response, take great notes and act. Great selling is listening, not talking.
(20) Be open to change, really open, because being in the top 2Vo will probably require radical adjustments. This is a fast-changing world. Be ahead of the curve or leave the profession. We change jobs, friends and spouses. Why not ourselves?

Web Site's New Owners Eye Pr,os
Contractor sales are among the new avenues being explored by the new owners of Superbuild.com, one of the largest electronic retailers of building products.
Services for professionals are expected to be launched by the first quarter of 2000. "There's no reason why, if you're a contractor on a job site, you should have to go to your local lumberyard," said Tom Todaro, head of the fourperson investment group that acquired the Seattle, Wa.based online business.
Other investors include Mike Pickett. who will serve as Superbuild's new chairman, and Sam Heerensperger, former Eagle Hardware exec. v.p. of merchandising and son of Eagle founder David Heerensperger.
The team first considered launching its own site, then instead decided to acquire an existing leader in e-commerce. Superbuild.com, founded last October by John Keuber, receives about 100,000 unique visitors a month, with sales rising 20Vo a month to reportedly top $ I million for the year.
Although Keuber has left, the company's ll employees were retained, including former Eagle executive Luke Baldwin, who is staying on as v.p. of sales and mktg.
The staff has expanded to 20 and the site is being completely overhauled. "We'll be relaunching with high-quality digital images on the site, and regional distribution nationwide, shipping out of warehouses in Spokane, Memphis and Frederick, Md.," Todaro said.
Its merchandise mix is also under review, with about half of its 80,000 offerings temporarily removed because they are redundant or not selling. By October the total will return to 80,000 with the addition of new products and entirely new categories such as faucets.
Other possible changes include providing e-commerce for physical lumberyards.
A month before Superbuild was purchased, Richard Takata resigned as president of Eagle Hardware to start yetto-be-launched cornerhardware.com.
Home Depot lssues Web Warning
Seller, beware. Home Depot has warned its vendors to think again before competing with the chain online.
Home Depot admitted that in May the chain began sending letters to all of its suppliers, including Black & Decker and Scotts Co.. that refer to online sales.
The letter, in part, read: "We recognize that a vendor has a right to sell through whatever distribution channels it desires. However, we, too, have the right to be selective in regard to vendors we select, and we trust that you can understand that a company may be hesitant to do business with its competitors."
The retailer didn't intend for the letter to be interpreted as coercive, according to spokesperson Jerry Shields. "This is obviously a business letter," he said. "This is about business."
Internet Ripe For Hardware Sales
A telephone survey conducted for the Home Improvement Research Institute recommends that the industry should quickly embrace Internet ordering.
Reportedly, a mere 2.2Vo of homeowners queried claimed to have purchased home improvement products online during the past year, contrasted to about lSVo for other sales.

Increase Gtade Recovery andstop Wet Claims
Wagner has the key elements to increase grade recovery. Introducing the new System 750 in two configurations to raise MC and orevent wet claims.
y0ur average
Pre-Planer
Wagner's new System 750M220 enables you to increase your average MC coming out of the kiln. By measuring every board coming out of the kiln, comparing it to your target average MC and dropping out too-wet boards for re-drying, an investment of a little inconvenience and additional labor returns BIG dollars in higher grade recovery. Info-Pak PlusrM for Windows NTrM tracks the MC of every board back to the exact location, date and time it was dried and provides archiving and reporting. The Solution to raising average MC.
Post-Planer
Wagner's new SyStem 7500146 detects every wet spot exceeding your target average moisture content (MC) and marks it for your QC staff. (Available with Info-Pak P/asrM for Windows NTIM) The Solution to wet claims.

"Twistered" Timber Goes West
Timber damaged from a tornado that swept through Nashville, Tn., will be milled by a Northern Californiabased firm for registration as SmartWood Rediscovered Wood.
On April 16, 1998, a twister swept through the grounds of The Hermitage, onetime estate of president Andrew Jackson. During the brief but destructive rampage, many
200-year-old trees were downed or uprooted.
Under an agreement, Plywood & Lumber Sales, Inc., Emeryville, Ca., agreed to salvage and mill the timber according to standards set by the Rainforest Alliance, an environmental organization that manages the SmartWood Rediscovered Wood program.
In addition, the wholesale distributor will give the Ladies' Hermitage Association l}Vo of the profits from the sale of the wood, enabling the preservation group to plant new trees and sow seedlings.
Customers who buy the milled eastern red cedar, cherry, hackberry, maple, poplar or walnut will receive a certificate of authenticity and a book about The Hermitage.

Enjoying the biggest gains will be solid-core, hardboardfaced doors, risingT .8Vo; hardwood stairwork, rising7.7Vo, and wood patio doors, climbing 6.7Vo.
