HONEST, TRANSPARENT & PREDICTABLE
------------
BY PATRICK ADAMS
I’VE RECENTLY HAD a travel schedule that reminded me of the “old days.” Each week packing up, heading through airports to hotels, and then repeating again. Wife asking via text messages, “Remind me, where are you again?” I fall back into the routine like a comfortable flannel that now may be just a bit more snug and less comfortable than days past.
I was in an airport somewhere on an extended layover due to a delay that was out of the control of the airline, or the airport, or any other party who could perhaps take responsibility. I was catching up on things when a young man clearly on business sat down next to me, clearly tired from the same routine. A conversation started between us that reminded me of myself several decades ago. He told me his story and then at the first opportunity, started asking me questions. This led to a great question that filled the rest of our time together.
“What is your leadership style that has led to your success?” It was a unique, thoughtful and intelligent question from someone who clearly had goals of his own. In the seconds that followed, it took me through a lifetime of my own fascination with “leadership.” What makes a great leader? Does leadership even matter? Is there a universal truth to this answer?
We are all leaders whether we consider that of ourselves or not. We all lead something, if nothing more than ourselves. Our family. Our team. Our friends. In an emergency. As I quickly pondered this question, I flashed through the countless leaders I have worked with to accomplish sometimes amazing, impossible things. Some are considered among the greatest leaders of all time. Some I consider the worst leaders I have ever met, yet I think I learned more from the wake of chaos they created than the amazing examples from the greats. I thought about all that I’ve taken from this lifetime of examples and how I would summarize my leadership style.
Because I take this role of leadership seriously, I have thought about it constantly throughout my life. Whether it is literally true or not, I consider how my role, my decisions, and my actions affect not only my team, but “their
team” as well. Do they go home angry or exhausted each day and how does that affect their family, their children, their dreams. How can I factor those things, while also keeping eye on accomplishing the next objective as a true team?
My answer to him was simply, “I work to be honest, transparent and predictable while always leading from the front.” The young man pondered that for what seemed like more than a moment. He finally replied, “Sir, I am fascinated with the ‘formula for success’ and have asked this question probably hundreds of times. Yours is the most interesting answer I’ve heard.”
At his encouragement, I went on to explain that honesty is the foundation for anything deemed a “success” in life. Transparency assures that your team has the context to make good decisions and for you all to operate on the same page, toward the same goal. Predictable lets the team know in advance how you will handle the inevitable changes of course that any good team must make. And it is only leading from the front that builds the trust and confidence across the team that what you are asking is safe, well thought out and that you are truly a leader who is a part of the team rather than a conductor using them to test the waters.
As I’ve said about many things before, it is simple, but not easy. It requires telling the truth whether the news is good or bad. It requires thought and communication, and a realistic assessment that balances both your team and your goals. It takes time to earn the reputation for these things, and it requires humility when you get it wrong.
Although I look around at world events and wonder what leadership style these “leaders” actually subscribe to, I do not have to look far in our own industry to be reminded that I am not wrong. As we near the close of yet another year, I remain grateful and humble to all of you that I have the honor of serving you.

HARDWOODS HOLD FAST TO SHARE OF PALLET MARKET
------------ BY ANNETTE FERRI
SOFTWOOD HAS GAINED substantial ground in wooden pallet manufacturing, accounting for 80% of the material now used and equivalent to 30% of all softwood lumber production, according to Forisk.
Yet, the importance of hardwood markets cannot be overstated, especially considering that nearly a billion new wooden pallets are manufactured annually. The pallet industry consumes roughly 40% of all hardwood lumber production—or about 3.5 billion bd. ft. of hardwood lumber annually. The durability, reliability, safety, and sustainability of hardwood pallets are essential to global logistics.
Hardwood remains vitally important, and hardwood
market supplies remain essential as partnerships and agreements help shape the future of our crucial sectors.
Hardwood: The Backbone of Wood Packaging
Wooden pallets play a crucial role in global logistics. Of all the materials used, wood stands out for its exceptional strength, sustainability, and ease of configuration. This is why, according to Modern Materials Handling, wood continues to dominate the pallet market at over 90% year after year.
Despite the rise of softwood alternatives, hardwood maintains a strong foothold in the market. This enduring preference underscores the significance of hardwood markets to the wood packaging industry, driving demand for species like oak, maple, and cherry.
Collaboration for Conservation
Ensuring the sustainability of hardwood resources is a priority and a responsibility that we share. Recognizing this, stakeholders in the wood packaging sector work closely with allied partners such as the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) to promote responsible forestry practices and forest management and collaborate on challenges and opportunities.
National Wooden Pallet & Container Association (NWPCA) president Brent McClendon recently joined a strategic planning session in Memphis with 60 hardwood industry leaders, association executives, and government representatives. The goal was to address sector challenges and opportunities through enhanced wood utilization, product innovation, and

market development. Collaborating with organizations like NHLA, industry players work together to maintain healthy forests, balancing conservation efforts with sustainable wood sourcing.
One noteworthy development is the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the U.S. Forest Service and key industry representatives, including NWPCA and the Hardwood Federation. Central to the MOA is creating an online carbon data platform to better understand and manage carbon sequestration in forests.
Over the last five years, the NWPCA has prioritized acquiring verifiable data on the sustainability of wood pallets. The NWPCA and the Pallet Foundation received funding to conduct a new lifecycle assessment and advance those efforts. The grant will help the NWPCA deliver a custom carbon calculator tool for businesses later this year.
Shaping a Sustainable Future
In a policy-driven global supply chain, industry cooperation and engagement are vital for thriving wood markets. Domestic and international policies can threaten the industry unexpectedly. NWPCA’s consultancy in Brussels secured policy wins in the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, preventing disruptions to the international flow of wood pallets and crates into the EU and protecting the entire supply chain, including hardwood providers.
Through collaboration and partnerships, stakeholders are safe-guarding hardwood resources and driving innovation and sustainability. By working together from forest to factory, the wood packaging sector can ensure a future where sustainability, economic viability, and stewardship go handin-hand. BPD

THERMALLY MODIFIED RAINSCREEN SIDING BY MOSO BAMBOO
BRUSH UP ON RAINSCREENS
ONE OF THE MOST successful technologies used today to deter rainwater intrusion into a building’s exterior wall and protect its envelope is the rainscreen system. Introduced more than 20 years ago in the United States, rainscreen technology has continued to advance, along with its popularity among building owners who desire a “stylish raincoat” for their structure.
Walls with rainscreen systems tend to be more durable and are less prone to costly repairs resulting from water damage. In addition to water infiltration, rainscreens are also effective at managing air infiltration, negative wind pressures, heat transfer, and vapor transmission into and out of a building. The only real drawback to a rainscreen system is the added cost associated with its more complex design and installation, according to Michael Radigan, senior operations manager at Western Specialty Contractors’ Facade Division.
What Exactly Is a Rainscreen System?
Numerous terms have been used in the past to describe rainscreen systems, which has caused some confusion as to what a rainscreen really is. A rainscreen system is the attachment of an outer skin of rear-ventilated cladding to a new or existing building. The system is a form of double-wall construction that uses an outer layer to keep out the rain and an inner layer to provide thermal insulation, prevent excessive air leakage and carry wind loading. Cladding that does not stand off from the wall sheathing to create a cavity is not considered a rainscreen, said Radigan. However, a masonry veneer can be called a rainscreen wall if it is ventilated.
“The purpose of using an insulation in the exterior cavity is to move the dew point to outside the air/vapor barrier in rainscreen systems, virtually eliminating moisture from the interior wall construction, unlike conventional construction,” he said. “This reduces the chance of mold developing within the interior wall. These systems are nicknamed ‘healthy wall systems’ and increase the R-value due to the addition of an exterior insulation board within the cavity.”
The exposed outer layers of a rainscreen facade may consist of many different materials such as terra cotta, fiber cement, metal, GFRC, wood, fiberglass and concrete, among others.
What Types of Rainscreens Are Available?
There are essentially three types of rainscreen systems available on the market today—vented, drained and vented, and pressure equalized.
Vented Systems – This type of rainscreen cladding system is not recommended for buildings more than four stories high. It utilizes a warm cavity, and no ventilation, that is open only at the bottom. The warm cavity provides a dew point similar to the outside, therefore reducing the chance of moisture entering the system.
Drained and Vented Systems – This type of system is also not recommended for use on buildings more than four stories high to prevent a build-up of condensation. Not watertight, this system requires a cavity opening at the top and bottom that provides drainage and promotes convection ventilation. An overhang is generally used to protect the cavity from the elements.
Pressure Equalized Systems – This type of system allows for ventilation openings large enough for air pressure to nearly equalize on both sides of the cladding. This type of system requires extensive design to balance the amount of air flowing into and out from behind the rainscreen panels.
Which Buildings Are Ideal for a Rainscreen?
If a building is located in a wet climate with an average annual rainfall of 60” or more, it is a good candidate for a rainscreen system. Conversely, in some cities, a rainscreen system is required by local building codes.
In general, most structures could benefit from a rainscreen system, which provides greater durability and moisture protection to an otherwise ordinary wall. A compromise in a rainscreen system will result in far less damage than a wall facing the elements without one, according to Radigan. BPD

WHAT'S DRIVING THE GROWTH OF MASS TIMBER
------------
BY FRITZ MASON
WITH THE CONSTRUCTION industry constantly on the hunt for better, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly ways to bring projects to completion, it’s no surprise that mass timber is growing in popularity. From coast to coast, mass timber construction is proving its worth and continuing to grow in awareness, acceptance, and specification.
A recent bulletin from the Army suggested that mass timber must be considered by all U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Project Delivery Teams when designing Army military construction and civil works vertical construction projects.
By definition, mass timber is a sustainable building practice involving glulam beams (layers of wood glued together) and cross-laminated timber panels. The benefits of choosing mass timber construction methods are numerous, including environmental sustainability, speed of construction, and economic advantages.
Environmental sustainability. One of the most important benefits of mass timber is its ability to
sequester carbon. As they grow, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere; when these trees are manufactured into mass timber, that carbon is stored in the building for a lifetime. As a result, mass timber buildings become a carbon sink, which provides environmental advantages compared with traditional construction materials. We’re seeing mass timber grow in commercial and non-residential applications, creating a halo effect with a positive environmental impact.
Speed of construction. When building with mass timber, because the wood elements are prefabricated, on-site construction time can be greatly reduced. The 619 Ponce project, a mass timber development in downtown Atlanta at Ponce City Market, is currently the largest southern yellow pine mass timber project in Georgia (and Georgia’s first homegrown mass timber project). The project is a mixed-use commercial and retail space of 120,000 sq. ft. that opened in spring of 2024. As a partner in the project, GeorgiaPacific supported Jamestown LP and SmartLam by processing the lumber for the glulam beams and CLT panels at G-P’s Albany, Ga., sawmill. Following processing, the lumber was shipped to Dothan, Al., where it was fabricated by the team at SmartLam into the beams and panels used during the construction.
The process benefited three communities across the South and, by using processes already in place, the beams and panels were delivered to the site in a timely manner ensuring an efficient project.
The future of mass timber. The benefits of mass timber are clear. There’s growing evidence that mass timber buildings are providing a strong return on investment when it comes to higher building values and commanding above average rental prices. As more companies and individuals become aware of the advantages of mass timber, we expect to see a continued increase across the nation. BPD

CONTINGENCY PLANNING IN THE LBM SPACE
AS AN AVID triathlete, I understand the immense physical and mental preparation required for an event like the Olympic triathlon, even though I don’t compete at that level. The recent postponement of the 2024 Olympic triathlon due to water quality concerns in the Seine River is not only disappointing for the athletes who have trained tirelessly but also for the Olympic brand.
This incident underscores the vital importance of having a solid contingency plan in place. In the lumber and building materials (LBM) sector, being prepared for unforeseen challenges is crucial. Whether it’s a natural disaster, supply chain disruption, or any other unexpected event, having a robust contingency plan can be the difference between business continuity and significant loss.
The Importance of a Contingency Plan
In the LBM industry, where operations often involve a complex network of manufacturers, distributors, and dealers, the ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances is crucial. A well-thought-out contingency plan ensures that your business can continue to operate smoothly, even when faced with unexpected disruptions. Here are some key elements to consider:
1. Risk Assessment. Identify potential risks that could impact your business. This includes natural disasters, supply chain interruptions, equipment failures, and more. Understanding these risks allows you to develop strategies to mitigate them.
2. Emergency Response Procedures. Develop clear procedures for responding to different types of emergencies. This should include communication plans, roles and responsibilities, and steps to ensure the safety of employees and customers.
3. Supply Chain Management. Ensure you have backup suppliers and alternative distribution routes in place. This can help minimize disruptions in the event that your primary suppliers or distribution channels are affected.
4. Inventory Management. Maintain an optimal level of inventory to buffer against supply chain disruptions. This might include stocking essential materials or products that have longer lead times.
5. Training and Drills. Regularly train your staff on emergency procedures and conduct drills to ensure everyone knows what to do in a crisis. This can help reduce panic and ensure a swift and coordinated response.
6. Communication Plan. Establish a communication plan to keep all stakeholders informed during an emergency. This includes employees, customers, suppliers, and other partners.
Key Questions to Consider
To ensure your business is prepared for any eventuality, ask yourself the following questions:
• Do we have a contingency plan in place for natural

disasters, such as floods or earthquakes?
• How would we handle a sudden shortage of key products or materials?
• Are our emergency response procedures up-to-date and known by all employees?
• Do we have backup suppliers and alternative distribution routes identified?
• Is our inventory management strategy robust enough to withstand supply chain disruptions?
• How often do we conduct training and drills for emergency situations?
• Is our communication plan effective in keeping all stakeholders informed during a crisis?
Avoiding Negative Outcomes
The postponement of the Olympic triathlon due to water quality issues is a vivid example of what can happen when contingency plans are not adequately prepared or executed. In the LBM space, failing to have a proper contingency plan could mean losing business, damaging your reputation, and experiencing significant financial losses.
Being proactive and prepared is essential. By developing and regularly updating your contingency plans, you can ensure that your business is resilient and capable of weathering any storm.
At Misura Group, we understand the critical importance of contingency planning in the LBM industry. We encourage all businesses in this sector to take a close look at their current plans and make necessary improvements to safeguard their operations. Don’t wait until it’s too late—be prepared and avoid feeling the heat when unexpected challenges arise. BPD

ANTICIPATION
------------ BY JAMES OLSEN
FOR MANY, sales can be a frustrating, exhausting job. Salespeople feel that they are chasing their tail, ending in a series of dead ends, and wasted time. These salespeople are “chasing” business and false leads. They are taking the “supposed” easy way. They don’t prepare; they chase. They don’t have a plan; they wing it. This willy-nilly approach brings willy-nilly results thus frustration and lack of sales.
Master Sellers, on the other hand, have a plan. They plan their career, year, month, week, day and every call. They understand that they have control over two things: the quantity of their calls and the quality of their calls. The Sales Gods are in charge of the results. Master Sellers understand that if they execute their plan, the results will take care of themselves.
Anticipation vs. Chasing
Far too many salespeople go into sales calls and ask, “Are you needing anything today?” or offer only one of one item. This approach brings little value to the customer. In essence it says, “Hey, Mrs. Customer, I am too lazy to do my job, so will you do it for me?” Sometimes the customer will give these salespeople an inquiry and…. the chase begins!
The Master Seller knows the items his customer buys and comes to the call with multiples of multiple items. This brings more value to the customer and gives the seller more chances to get an order. The multiples of multiples approach also helps sell volume.
Salespeople ask me all the time, “How do I sell more volume?” I tell them, “When you come with one of
one item, you are the ‘onesy’ salesperson.” This approach is what I call a “one and done” call. This is not only detrimental in the short term, but long-term you set yourself up in the customer’s mind as the “onesy” salesperson.
Why don’t more salespeople offer multiples of multiples? Because it is more work. The majority of salespeople take the supposed easy way and suffer for it.
Setting Up the Next Call
Whether we get an order or not, when the sales part of the call is over, it is crucial that we set up the next call—so we can anticipate our customer’s future need. Asking, “What’s coming up next?” is fine, but I prefer a much more in-depth questioning before leaving the call; I call it Full Disclosure Selling.
The eight questions of Full Disclosure Selling are:
1. Where are you in your buy cycle? This question will create a lot of, “What do you mean?” responses from customers. This allows us to dig in deeper. “Let’s talk about our 2x4 16’s”
2. “Do you have any 16’s on order?”
3. “How much do you have on the ground?” Many times the customer will say, “I don’t know. I’ll have to check my inventory.” We need to simply ask, “Can we pull that up right now?”
4. “Of what you have on order and on the ground, how much is already sold?’
5. “What’s your monthly usage?” Most sellers only have a vague idea how much their customers used per
month. The Master Seller knows.
6. “What’s your buy-back point?” “How low can you let it go before you have to buy it?”
7. “What’s your average cost?”
8. “What are you paying out of distribution?”
Sometimes Full Disclosure questions will lead to an order:
“Well, John, we’ve got none on order and only one in the yard. We use about a truck a week and shipments are two weeks out, so if we don’t buy now, we are going to have to pay a premium out of distribution, so why don’t we put on a couple? In addition, the market is moving so if we wait, we will also have to pay more.”
But that is not the main purpose of Full Disclosure Selling. The main purpose is to set up our next call so we can anticipate our customer’s need and sell into that need vs. chasing inquiry. If we do Full Disclosure with our entire customer base, we will eventually be playing offense all day long.
This brings more value to our customers and brings more sales and satisfaction to us. When we do what other sellers don’t, we stand out from the crowd and get more business. BPD

CIVILITY IN THE WORKPLACE
------------ BY NICHOLAS RITCHIE
BEING NICE IN the workplace matters. Civility has a tremendous impact on workplace dynamics, culture, and organizational performance. Maintaining a standard of respectful and courteous behavior may seem like a simple initiative, but the costs of incivility in the workplace can be severe. With added factors like remote working environments and the upcoming November elections, prioritizing workplace civility has never been more important.
A recent SHRM study on workplace incivility reveals an alarming trend: 33% of U.S. workers expect incivility to increase in the coming year. The data shows that, on average, employees encounter more than one act of incivility per day. What does this mean for your workplace, and how can you combat this growing issue?
The Costs of Incivility
The financial and operational costs of incivility in the workplace are well-documented, with a clear link between incivility and higher turnover rates. This turnover is costly not only in terms of recruiting, onboarding, and training but also in the loss of valuable institutional knowledge. Veteran employees play a crucial role in “setting the tone” for the workplace, and their absence can negatively impact productivity and morale, both in the short and long term. In cases of extreme incivility and/or a toxic work environment, organizations must also consider potential litigation costs and damage to their reputation.
Civility in an Election Year
Tensions are high due to the upcoming November elections. To maintain civility and an inclusive workplace, political discussions and references should remain separate from the work environment. These conversations can quickly become emotionally charged, leading to conflict that may increase turnover and reduce productivity in the long term. A recent study on politics in the workplace found that 45% of employees regretted engaging in political discussions at work, and over half viewed
these discussions as counterproductive. Moreover, political-themed attire, pins, lanyards, and desktop “swag” just exacerbate tension.
But what about free speech? Private-sector employees are not protected by the First Amendment’s right to free speech in the workplace with one exception: the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) explicitly states that employees have a right to discuss their working conditions, pay, benefits, and safety. This form of speech is considered protected speech. Employees and employers alike may be surprised to learn that political speech outside of what the NLRA exempts is not protected by the First Amendment and is not a valid justification for allowing political discussion in the office. Employers do not need to tolerate (and probably shouldn’t tolerate) political garb and gab in the workplace.
The Role of Digital Communication
With the rise of remote and hybrid working environments comes the possibility of miscommunications. Without in-person body language and other non-verbal cues, communication in the digital environment can become a breeding ground for incivility. Many of these conflicts arise from simple misunderstandings but are often based on the assumption that others can easily understand thoughts, ideas, and motives without further clarification. Simply put, showing up matters. Being approachable and available is valuable. Don’t assume people know what you mean or how you feel—it’s very hard to assess these things in a remote and hybrid environment. Video conferencing helps. Showing up, when possible, is better.
The Business Case for Civility
The economic advantages of a civil, respectful, and inclusive workplace cannot be understated. As earlier mentioned, the impacts of incivility commonly present themselves in high turnover rates, decreasing productivity, and low employee morale. The SHRM Civility Index reported that employees who experienced incivility in the workplace were three times more likely to be dissatisfied
Q. We have some employees who work remotely. We established requirements such as they need to have proper and secure internet access, they need to be able to protect the information of the company and our clients, and they need to be available during certain hours. We found out that an employee has been working from another location for the past month without our approval. What is the exposure and what are our options?
A. Allowing employees the flexibility of a remote work arrangement is a rapidly increasing reality that is welcome by most employees. When creating the option, you should establish criteria (i.e., advanced approval, job duties that can be performed remotely, good job performance, etc.) and expectations (i.e., required hours of availability, performance standards, dependable and secure internet, video, and phone connections, a quiet and secure place to work, etc.). Explain these to the employee and make sure they understand them as well as the repercussions if they fail to maintain them.
When an employee is no longer meeting those criteria and/or expectations, then you will need to reassess the situation to decide if it is still a feasible option. For example, if an employee needs to work from another location for a short period (i.e., a week), you should verify if they will be able to perform their tasks. However, if they want to work from a different location for longer (i.e., three months while traveling) then you also need to consider bigger issues such as different state taxes, Workers’ Comp, employment laws, etc. Even if an employee is working from a different location for an afternoon (i.e., from a Starbucks), you need to ensure their internet access will be secure to protect your data and network
You should also leave yourself the option to rescind or revise any work arrangement, including remote. If an employee is no longer meeting the criteria and/or expectations, then review the arrangement, explain your concerns, and what will happen if they cannot abide by the agreement. This becomes even more urgent if operations suffer, data integrity is compromised, or legal exposure is increased.
at work. Additionally, internal incivility can both directly and indirectly affect the customer experience.
Dissatisfied employees are more likely to let customer interactions suffer, which can lead to negative customer feedback and reduced loyalty. In turn, this impacts the organization’s reputation and overall performance, highlighting the crucial need for a respectful and supportive workplace environment.
But let’s not confuse disagreement and incivility. Disagreement, when approached properly, can be a catalyst for growth and development. Organizations and leaders should be prompt in addressing and ending incivility while fostering an environment where open discussion and differing viewpoints are encouraged. By handling disagreements constructively, organizations can promote a culture of respect and professionalism.
Strategies for Promoting Civility
Leaders must set the standard by demonstrating civil conduct consistently, often exceeding the expectations they establish for their employees. Leading by example is the most effective way to drive change. If you expect your employees to adhere to certain standards of civility, it is your responsibility as a leader to surpass those expectations.
Clearly state your expectations for your employees and yourself, as a team member. When issues of incivility arise, they must be addressed promptly. And when employees exceed those expectations, recognize them!
Training and development programs in ethics and interpersonal communication can also help, providing employees with a strong foundation upon which to build. These programs both enhance individual skills and contribute to a strong organizational culture.
Encouraging open dialogue also allows employees to voice their concerns and share their perspectives while providing a sense of accountability and the incentive for continuous improvement.
Fostering a civil working environment is crucial for maintaining and boosting productivity and workplace wellbeing. Brand-new to the video resource library: a five-part series detailing exterior eastern white pine siding installation, featuring members of the popular Magnolia Network show Maine Cabin Masters. To create the new video series, the Maine Cabin Masters took a road trip to NELMA head-
quarters in Cumberland, Me., to check out an old storage shed on our property. The result? We have a shed with gorgeous new siding that adds a ton of curb appeal to our property, and six fun new videos to help lumber dealers sell more wood!
Elements of the video series include one overall video showcasing the entire process; the rest of the build is then broken down into five separate videos addressing each significant part of the process: trim removal, new trim install, new siding install, new door install, and a finished shed reveal.
Video Series: Barrel Ceiling Construction
Got a customer hankering to build a beautiful barrel ceiling? This video series, taken from a session on the same topic at a recent JLC Live trade show, walks your customers through the process in step-by-step fashion. The videos start with a tutorial on how to figure out the math involved in creating the curved ceiling, then move into building a template for installation and framing the ceiling. The series concludes with the actual installation, discussed in minute detail and including tips and techniques to make the process a smooth one.
Educational Video: Wood Wainscoting
One of the most popular home enhancements is probably a wood accent wall, and everyone loves the look of a good wainscot. The delicately beaded board can be left natural, stained, or painted to compliment the design of any type of home. But how much do you and your customers truly know about the product and the process of installing wainscoting?
Follow this informative video to learn more about how to allow the wood to acclimate prior to use, how to prep the wall before installation, proper detailing of door and window transitions, the process of adding casing legs (start with the header and the sill!), and correct installation of plinths, base, and caps.
Next time a customer turns to you for advice on how to use the wood they’ve purchased, send them to NELMAtv on YouTube for easy-to-follow videos guaranteed to not only impart knowledge, but provide a little entertainment along the way BPD

The acquisition bolsters Culpeper’s marine division and enhances its ability to serve customers with durable, high-quality products designed for harsh water environments.

ARKANSAS SAWMILL MODERNIZED
PotlatchDeltic has completed the planned downtime at the Waldo, Ar., sawmill to tie-in equipment for a modernization and expansion project.
Construction has been completed and the facility is beginning its ramp-up phase. It is anticipated that it will take six to 12 months to reach the mill’s new dimensional lumber capacity of 275 million bd. ft. per year.
The Waldo modernization and expansion project is a $131 million strategic investment that is expected to increase the mill’s annual capacity by 85 million bd. ft., improve recovery by 6%, and reduce cash processing costs by approximately 30%.
US LBM ACQUIRES DFW’S NIX DOOR
US LBM acquired Nix Door & Hardware, Fort Worth, Tx., which will operate as part of US LBM’s Texas Building Supply.
Nix provides distribution, sales and installation services for windows, doors and fireplaces to residential and commercial customers. Additionally, Nix supplies and installs exterior home faux stone veneer products, and offers security and automation systems to homeowners.
ALABAMA TREATER ADDS CCA PLANT
Southeast Forest Products (SEFP) in Louisville, Al., recently installed an additional CCA treating facility with an annual capacity of more than 10 million bd. ft. in a single shift.
The plant is one of the first in the U.S. to employ
IWT-Moldrup’s unique automatic hydraulic hold-down clamp systems to avoid lashing of the wood before, during and after treating minimizing contact between the plant operator and freshly treated wood.
The wood is almost drip-free when it comes out of the plant and SEFP has it under roof with a concrete pad for storage of the wood. In eight hours, the plant can run six charges of each 7,600 bd. ft. per charge.
SEFP anticipates later adding an automatic material handling system that would increase the capacity of the single cylinder to 30 million bd. ft. still using only one operator, since two additional shifts could run automatically without an operator present. The automatic handling system would also eliminate the need for a drip-pad and a dedicated forklift.
PRODUCTION BEGINS AT ACCOYA PLANT
Accoya USA, the modified wood producer’s first-ever U.S. manufacturing site, is now commercially operational in Kingsport, Tn.
The facility, a joint venture between Accsys and Eastman Chemical Co., replicates the design and technology of Accsys’ established production facility in the Netherlands and has an initial capacity of 18 million bd. ft. The site created 46 skilled new jobs in the area.

The Montréal Wood Convention is the largest event in Canada for the wood products industry, with a typical attendance of around 1,100 delegates from North America and overseas.
The Montréal Wood Convention has continued to grow in popularity since its inception. Each year, the varied program and the quality of participants from leading companies reflect the latest market trends and the many organic changes happening within a year in the wood industry.
The event, which has its roots in the Canadian Lumbermen’s Association (CLA) Convention, first held in 1908, was revamped and restarted in 2013 by four industry associations in Eastern Canada, the Maritime Lumber Bureau (MLB), the Ontario Forest Industry Association (OFIA), the Québec Forest Industry Council (QFIC) and the Québec Wood Export Bureau (QWEB).
We hope to see you in Montréal next year!
NELMA [Booth 303]
Established in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NELMA) is the rules writing agency for eastern white pine lumber and the grading authority for the SPFs-grouping of species that includes the Eastern Spruces, Balsam Fir, and Red Pine.

Partap Forest Products
[Booth 905]
Partap Forest Products is a primary manufacturer of Pacific Hemfir and western red cedar products. As a family-owned and operated business, Partap thrives on its commitment to product quality and customer satisfaction. Throughout our many years in business, we have invested in ourselves to better serve the needs of our customers in all product markets including but not limited to siding/fascia, decking, fencing, appearance grade timbers, export clears, and export dimensional products.
West Bay Forest Products
Since 1988, West Bay Forest Products has built our business on western red cedar. We’ve grown from a single remanufacturing operation to become a multi-faceted cedar supplier, and now own and operate two primary breakdown facilities along with two remanufacturing plants across the Pacific Northwest.
With the ability to cut our own logs, West Bay is able to better control our fiber supply, positioning us to oversee the entire manufacturing process right from first cut to order fulfillment. The result? Unmatched consistency, timely delivery, and a wide variety of tailored patterns and dimensions to give our customers improved flexibility in their cedar programs.
One of West Bay’s specialties are appearance grade cedar timbers. These timbers are highly sought after by distributors and builders for their exceptional beauty and versatility, and we do our part to develop timbers that can be used in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor applications.
West Bay bucks our logs to prioritize ideal timber lengths, enabling us to deliver premium tallies to our customers. Once cut, all timbers are end-waxed and packaged carefully to minimize iron-stain or other damage that could occur in transit or during manufacturing. The end result is a high-end timber delivered on time and in pristine condition.

Combilift
Loading and unloading containers is now faster, more efficient, and safer with the Combi-CSS.
Combilift, the Irish-based manufacturer, has been providing custom-made and space-saving material-handling solutions for over 26 years, prioritizing safety while enhancing productivity and efficiency.
The Combi-CSS (Container Slip Sheet), with a maximum capacity of 65,000 lbs , is designed for the fast (and safe!) loading and offloading of long products, such as lumber, into containers. The electro-hydraulically powered Combi-CSS can fully load a 40' container in under 6 minutes with just one operator. The load is moved into the container on a Hardox 500 steel sheet by our patented push-pull mechanism. Once the container is fully loaded, a hydraulic rear barrier gate, fixed to the end of the platform, secures the goods inside while the metal sheet smoothly slides out during offloading, ensuring a seamless transition of materials without any risk of damage.
Combilift is renowned for its innovation and customer-centric approach, developing material handling solutions tailored to meet customers’ needs. Recently launched at EXPO Richmond 2024, the Combi-CLL (Log Loader) is designed to tackle the tricky demands of the forestry industry. It operates on the same concept as the CombiCSS. Logs can be individually lifted and pre-loaded into a robust,
[Booth 330]
high-sided metal “tub” before the patented push-pull mechanism powers the tub into the container
These simple-to-operate and cost-effective models prioritize speed, efficiency and safety, reducing the risk of accidents and product damage. Check out combilift.com and visit our booth at the Traders Market to see how Combilift can transform your wood and lumber handling operations!
When a lumberyard is designed well and outfitted with the right buildings and storage solutions, there are numerous operational gains, or wins, achieved: better flow, better handling, and a better customer experience, along with reduced cull and labor costs.
Yet, many owners don’t realize how much more efficient their yards could be or they assume improvements would be cost-prohibitive. Often, it’s not until circumstances force them to make changes, or they build a yard at a new location, that they appreciate the limitations of their old facilities.
CT Darnell/Sunbelt Rack has built close to 1,500 buildings and worked on over 1,000 lumberyards. Their offerings include site planning, design, and construction of both LBM facilities and retail buildings, as well as site renovations. They work as a general contractor and have provided more rack systems and pre-engineered steel buildings in more lumberyards across the U.S. than any other supplier.
Wholesale yards’ storage needs are constantly changing based on inventory levels and require flexibility in the design. Steve Sprenger needed to increase the storage capacity at Sprenger Midwest Wholesale's Moorhead, Mn., location. They gave the inventory information and site plan to CT Darnell/Sunbelt Rack, who came up with the best yard plan to maximize volume, space, and traffic flow. The result was a 6,000-sq. ft., three-sided bulk storage shed; a 32,000-sq. ft. warehouse building; and an 11,500-sq. ft. double-aisle cantilever rack-supported drive-thru building.

Revolutionizing the Lumber Industry: The Impact of Integrated Software Systems
In the ever-evolving landscape of the lumber industry, staying competitive means adapting to new technologies and methods. Integrated software systems are now making significant inroads into the lumber sector, offering a comprehensive solution to manage and streamline operations.
Understanding ERP Systems
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are integrated software platforms designed to manage and unify various business processes across an organization. By consolidating data and automating workflows, ERP systems provide a holistic view of operations, from production and inventory to finance and human resources.
How ERP Systems Are Transforming the Lumber Industry
1. Streamlined Operations. In the lumber industry, operations involve a complex interplay of activities, including sourcing raw materials, processing lumber, managing inventory, and fulfilling orders.
Collins
[Booth 817]
[Booth 815]
ERP systems help streamline these processes by providing a unified platform where all data is integrated and accessible. This leads to improved coordination between different departments and a reduction in operational silos.
2. Enhanced Inventory Management. Effective inventory management is crucial due to the variability in supply and demand. ERP systems provide real-time tracking and forecasting capabilities that help manage inventory levels more effectively. Other key benefits include demand forecasting and reduced stockouts and overstocks.
3. Optimized Production Planning. Production planning in the lumber industry involves scheduling, resource allocation, and managing production lines. ERP systems enable more precise and efficient production planning by providing tools to manage and optimize these processes.
4. Improved Financial Management. Managing finances involves handling large volumes of transactions, from purchasing raw materials to billing customers. ERP systems provide integrated financial man-
agement tools that help in tracking expenses, streamlining accounting processes including invoicing, payments, and reconciliation, and generating financial reports.
5. Enhanced Customer Service. Customer satisfaction is a key driver of success. ERP systems enhance customer service by providing tools to manage customer interactions, track orders, and ensure timely delivery.
The Road Ahead
As the lumber industry continues to evolve, the adoption of ERP systems represents a significant step towards modernizing operations and staying competitive. By integrating various functions into a single platform, ERP systems offer enhanced visibility, efficiency, and control over business processes.
RDB Solutions specializes in ERP solutions for the lumber wholesale, remanufacturing, treatment processing, and distribution center industries.

There is a growing interest in fire-retardant-treated wood (FRTW) among building material dealers who serve professional contractors. FRTW fits well with their desire for appropriate specialty products. Plus, specifiers, who are looking for design solutions to comply with building code requirements are increasingly turning to FRTW for cost effective alternatives for both new construction and remodeling projects.
FRTW is not a DIY product, and most mass merchandisers don't stock it. As a result, a stocking dealer has far fewer competitors in FRTW and can generate a reasonable profit if they are in an area where commercial development is underway. By stocking FRTW and informing commercial contractors that it is in stock, dealers can attract new customers to the store and prevent existing customers from looking elsewhere.
Vertically integrated, Hoover Treated Wood Products is the world’s largest manufacturer of fire-retardant-treated wood products. Hoover maintains UL listing for both interior and exterior treated lumber and plywood products, PyroGuard and ExteriorFireX respectively. Lumber including glulam, is listed as BPVV.R7002, and plywood, including laminated veneer lumber (LVL), is listed as BUGV.R7003
Build by the Code. Live by the Code. With the newest edition of UL ER7002-01, Hoover is the first to demonstrate compliance with the 2024 editions of the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), the Building Construction and Safety Code (NFPA 5000), and the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101). Hoover continues to lead the way proving our commitment to fire and life safety by protecting people where they live and work.

NELMA HOLDS ITS MAINE EVENT
THE 91ST ANNUAL meeting of the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association drew around 150 members and guests back to the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Me., Sept. 17-19, making it one of the group’s largest meetings in more than five years.
The schedule included the golf scramble, exhibits and a welcome reception. Day two was packed with business sessions, opened by NELMA chair Susan Coulombe, Irving Forest Products. Following a State of the Association presention by NELMA president Jeff Easterling, Coulombe recognized the 2024 Safety Award winners: Hammond Lumber; Robbins Lumber, East Baldwin, Me.; Hancock Lumber, Pittsfield, Me.; and Irving Forest Products, Ashland, Me. Coulombe reported that 18 mills submitted OSHA performance data, totaling just over two million man-hours for all their sawmill and planer operations. She also noted seven mills with combined operation man-hours of nearly 900,000 had a no loss-time, accident-free year in 2023.
The current officers were unanimously approved for re-appointment for the final year of their two-year terms, including chair Coulombe; 1st vice chair Matt Duprey, Han-
cock Lumber; 2nd vice chair Jason Brochu, Pleasant River Lumber; and treasurer Bob Moses, Britton Lumber. Arkon Horne, of Daaquam Lumber Maine, and Jim Dermody, Seaboard International, were elected to second three-year terms on the board of directors. B. Manning, Sawmill Associates, is now at-large rep on the advisory committee.
The feature event of the morning was a panel discussion, which attempted to answer the age-old question: “How Does That Sell a Stick of Lumber?” Panelists Simon Hyoun, Softwood Lumber Board; Jackson Morrill, American Wood Council; Rose Braden, Softwood Export Council; and Russell Edgar, University of Maine’s Wood Composites Laboratory, each summarized how their organization’s activities are benefiting the forest products industry.
Attendees then enjoyed the Industry Lunch, which included the premiere of the PBS series America’s Forests with Chuck Leavell, which featured the state of Maine in two episodes. In the afternoon, Forest Economic Advisors’ Paul Jannke spoke on “Rate Cuts, Elections, Pent-up Demand, and Affordable Housing: Is There Light at the End of the Tunnel or is that a Train?”
As for next year’s 92nd annual, mark your calendar for Sept. 9-11 at Hyatt’s Spruce Peak Lodge in Stowe, Vt.

FLASHBACK: LUMBER SHORTS
SIXTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO, in October of 1956, BPD sister publication The California Merchant covered a Phoenix, Az., dealer’s efforts to sell customers short—or rather in shorts. Every summer, Entz-White Lumber & Supply ran ads offering a discount to customers wearing Bermuda shorts. Employees were also encouraged to dress in Bermuda shorts, socks and shirts emblazoned with the Entz-White insignia. (The company supplied a patch and told employees that the cost of their garments was tax-deductible.)
Entz-White said the yearly promotion boosted both business and morale. The yard lasted until the recession of the 1980s. Its property, at the corner of 9th and Camelback Rd., is now a luxury apartment complex. BPD
Appearing on the front cover of the October 1, 1956 edition, White Brothers—which closed earlier this year—was one of The Merchant’s most prominent advertisers over the magazine’s first 50 years.
MR. WHITE (also in shorts) looks on as billing clerk Connie Gee takes a call.
CAMERAMAN photographed Smith and her shorts in various locations all throughout the yard, including near the plywood bargain bin.
SECRETARY Carolyn Smith is ready to take dictation from VP Bishop White.
EMPLOYEES Gee, Sandra Bettini, and Smith make themselves comfortable on manager Carl Buchanan’s desk. Not sure if Carl’s also wearing shorts.
