Doing the New Thing

THE OTHER NIGHT, I received a text message from my daughter. She was flying in the next day to spend a few weeks with us before returning to college.

“I cut my hair! don’t be shocked!” she texted (sic).

“do I get a preview?” I asked.

“im still making changes to it—itll be a surprise”

When I picked her up at the airport the next day, I recognized her in the crowd, although the muchshorter hair shaved off a few of her late-teen years and gave her an even-more youthful look.

“It’s cute!” I said, as she jumped in the car. “What made you want to cut your hair?”

“I didn’t mean to, but my friend kept cutting it.”

“Are you happy with it?”

“Yeah. It’s different. I would not have done it on my own.”

In the scope of things, it wasn’t that big of a change considering her other recent changes in appearance (think: nose and eyebrow rings), but this one took her look in a different direction—one that I like very much. Sometimes it’s those seemingly small changes made incrementally over time that can add up. Such as the design of our magazine.

All this year, we have been giving the magazine a mini makeover. With an updated design here, new colors there, the appearance of the magazine has taken on a new energy.

This issue is no different. Although our annual Deck Specialist of the Year Awards have been going strong for years now, the design of this year’s award section got a fresh remake. As my hairstylist friend would say, we “joosed” it up a bit (see pages 12-41).

We again highlighted those builders who have become “Deck Specialists”—as this year’s DeckWise’s Specialist of the Year winner Brendan Casey fondly likes to say in his column (see pages 20 and 56).

What sets these builders apart, and what has caught the attention of their nominating manufacturers, is how they incorporate their building materials into their projects. They are being recognized for their mastery in creating straight edges, perfectly manicured borders, and coordinated layers of lighting that bring life to their projects both day and night.

But ultimately, what these builders have excelled in—and become Deck Specialists for—is knowing the precise time their project’s look is just right.

TimberTech Receives First Ignition-Resistant Designation

The AZEK Company Inc., which manufactures TimberTech decking and railing, is the first in the composite decking industry to receive an Ignition Resistant designation from California’s State Fire Marshal. Ignition Resistance refers to building materials that resist catching fire or burning easily, and that may slow the spread of flames.

In addition, TimberTech’s Vintage and Landmark Collections hold a Class A Flame Spread Rating, and its Advanced PVC Decking meets Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) compliance standards.

“The significance of these ratings cannot be overstated, especially for homeowners like me living in California and those living in other areas prone to wildfires or those simply seeking to enhance the safety of their homes,” said Sam Toole, chief marketing officer for AZEK.

Trex Honors Contractors with Stellar Service Awards

Eight TrexPro contractors, who rank within the top 25% of TrexPro builders in their region by project volume and sales, and who have the highest satisfaction ratings in post-build customer surveys, were awarded a Trex Stellar Service Award.

The winners (by region) were: Rick Neff of RN Construction, Michigan (Central), Dennis Kidd of Decks by Dak, Virginia (Mid-Atlantic), Glen Rodrigue of All Decked Out CT LLC, Connecticut (Northeast), Tana and Randy Mallory of Three 60 Decks, Washington (Pacific Northwest), Wes Brawner of Brawner Renovations, Georgia (South), Tony Clem of Add a Deck of the Rockies, Colorado (South Central), Guy Jacob Zrachya of Palm Construction, California (Southwest), and Sam Buckland of SD Decking in the United Kingdom (International).

Envision Expands Distribution with Detroit Forest Products

Envision Outdoor Living Products composite decking and accessories will be distributed by Detroit Forest Products, Westland, MI.

Detroit Forest Products will sell Envision’s Distinction and Ridge Premium capped composite decking, as well as EverGrain uncapped composite decking, composite skirting, and fasteners.

“For 45 years, Detroit Forest Products has operated on a strong platform of customer service, deep inventory levels, and tremendous expertise,” said Kyle Warwick, director of sales for Envision Outdoor Living Products.

Deck Specialist for the fourth year has partnered with leading manufacturers in outdoor living to honor top builders that specialize in their brands, based on sales growth or artistic excellence.

In this special issue, the winners discuss their businesses, passions, and what they look forward to seeing in the future.

YEAR FOUNDED: 1995

How did Northstar get started?

Northstar Systembuilt was founded in 1995 in the city of Marshall, MN. Starting off as a family-owned business, Northstar was built up on good old-fashioned quality and personalized service. While the business has now grown to a thriving and well-recognized manufacturer of modular homes, these attributes have not been compromised. To facilitate further growth of Northstar, we relocated our manufacturing facility to Redwood Falls in 2013 and focused on becoming a large, modern factory. Since then, we have acquired another facility for production and have expanded both our onsite and offsite storage. Most recently, we completed an addition to our main production line in the summer of 2022 and added a second production facility in Watertown in June of 2022 to assist with the market demand for our product.

Why do you prefer using Armadillo products?

For us, we are always on the lookout for USA-made, quality building products at an affordable price. We are passionate about quality, which is built into each home from the outside in with brands such as Armadillo, which you can have confidence in. Life is too short to be wasted with the maintenance of timber decks!

Describe a recent project in which you used Armadillo decking.

A housing development in Gypsum, CO. This project is a new housing development with all the homes coming from both our Redwood Falls and Watertown locations. It is a mix of both single-story and twostory homes ranging from 1,400–3,200 sq. ft. in size.

What inspires your projects?

Northstar Systembuilt focuses on two specific interests of each homeowner: quality and customization—and build both points into every project. We aren’t just building modules to stack together onsite, we are building homes, multifamily buildings, workforce housing and hospitality buildings for a specific customer with their own unique specific needs. This gives our whole team a personal link with the project by understanding what it is, which makes it our customer’s dream project.

What’s ahead for Northstar?

We are continually looking for further growth opportunities to enable us to grow and expand both our services and areas that we cover. Whilst we have additional capacity yet at our South Dakota facility, we will hopefully soon be able to continue the journey of plant number three! DS

CAMO

Specialist of the Year

CASCADE FENCE & DECK

OWNER: Leif Wirtanen

LOCATION: Vancouver, WA.

YEAR FOUNDED: 1997

WEBSITE: cascadefenceanddeck.com

INSTAGRAM: cascadefenceanddeck

FACEBOOK: cascadefenceanddeck

Tell us how Cascade Fence & Deck got its start. Cascade started as primarily a fencing contractor, but through the years grew into a fence, deck and patio contractor. In the early years, we mainly focused on new construction and small commercial projects, but in 2014 made the switch to only working with homeowners as a design build firm.

How did CAMO become one of your primary vendors?

We have used CAMO ever since they came out with the original hidden fastening system where the screw goes in at an angle. We were blown away when they came out with the clip system, and our crews loved it. I’ve often related that I believe this has been the most innovative and game-changing product that has hit the decking market in the last five years.

Where do your design ideas come from?

Most of my design ideas come from social media, and also when I am out and about—oftentimes at hotels, restaurants, etc. I find cool features that would work amazing in the backyard as well.

What are some of your favorite products, and why?

In the decking world, we love CAMO Fasteners, Deckorators decking/railing, and ZipUp underdeck ceilings. The products are great, but it is always the people in those organizations that make us love the product.

Where do your “creative spins” come from?

As I am listening to and interviewing the client, I oftentimes get really excited that I can make these realities come true, and I can give them a backyard space that is even better than they imagine.

How has business been?

The first half of 2024 has been the best stretch of sales we have ever had as a company, and we are very optimistic about 2024. Despite what is going on politically and economically, we feel like if we focus on our marketing, branding and the rest of the company we will be okay. 2024 and beyond will be more friendly to the companies that are taking branding and marketing seriously. We have a large market, and know that even if less people are buying, there will still be enough as long as we are capitalizing.

What’s ahead for Cascade Fence & Deck?

We opened our second location in 2023, and hope to grow both locations as well as build a new headquarters office/shop in Vancouver, WA., and open a third location in the next few years. DS

OGDEN DECKS

OWNERS: AJ Van Dugteren, Jason Marchand, Caitlyn Bustos

LOCATION: Ogden, UT.

YEAR FOUNDED: 2015

WEBSITE: ogdendecks.com

INSTAGRAM: ogden.decks

FACEBOOK: ogdendecks

Take us to the beginning of your company.

Ogden Decks came together in 2015 to address a lack of specialty deck builders in the market. A huge gap in the market for experienced creative deck builders allowed the company’s experience in framing to carve out a niche focused on deck building. We quickly became a major player in our market serving all income levels desiring a deck big and small. This attention to detail gained the attention of custom home builders who soon realized our ability to make their decks artistic to complement the house build instead of just an afterthought as some builders thought of decks.

How did you begin using Deckorators?

Our first year utilizing the biggest brand out there, we quickly achieved the highest status they awarded for volume purchased. We quickly realized we didn’t want to align ourselves with only one brand even if they were the biggest. We started going through the process of certification with the

other big brands to diversify our capabilities in the decking market, Deckorators being one of them. By the time our second year rolled around testing Deckorators, we noticed our customers were picking their products over other brands based on look, technology, and warranty. Additionally, they stood out with the superior level of support we got from the representatives that not only were quick to help us, but quick to help our clients if the need ever arose.

To this day, Deckorators continues to impress not only with technology and selection, but with the level of customer service for us and our customers.

Where do you get your project ideas from?

Traditionally, Jason would create and execute our project ideas and bring them to life. In 2022, we hired a team and continue to grow our abilities utilizing an in-house designer to take and guide specific projects to the next level.

Our designer Laila, who originally had little to no construction experience, has an eye for design and a love for bringing beautiful projects to life. Once her design is built by our team, her ability to photograph and use content creation for marketing is a real passion of hers. Now in 2024, she continues to grow substantially in the area of bringing beauty, design, and decks together to create impressive projects.

What is your favorite project using Deckorators, and why?

Our favorite project was built on a ranch in Morgan County, UT. The homeowner gave us the liberty

of free design with little restriction in budget, allowing us to build a multi-tier custom 1,600+ sq. ft. deck with different areas to the deck to entertain, cook, relax and just take in the view. We utilized Deckorators’ SureStone Technology, Voyage Costa, to bring the project to life with an elegant, timeliness, and beautiful design.

Tell us about your team.

Jason Marchand has been in the carpentry and framing business since he was a child working in his father’s custom cabinet shop. He later went on to frame houses before becoming a crew leader building custom homes up and down the Wasatch Front in Utah.

In 2015, the deck building company was formed, and Jason began getting more and more specialized into the area of deck building. To this day, building some of the more complicated decks in our area, Jason has the

unique ability to piece together in his head the most-difficult framing projects.

AJ Van Dugteren began his entrepreneurial business in 2012 as a side investment. By 2015, he hired Jason to build a deck on his house. After the completion of the deck, AJ and Jason partnered in business to grow and scale the deck building company.

In 2018, AJ went full time in business and has assisted and run the business side of the company with a focus on estimating , marketing, and financial aspects as they come up.

Caitlyn Bustos joined the team in 2022 as the office manager, bringing a firm woman’s touch to the deck building industry. She quickly acquired respect for her ability to learn the bits and pieces of a deck, and keep the guys in the field organized and where they needed to be.

The rest of our team consists of multiple full-time crews and some seasonal crews, allowing us to handle not only the volume of decks that come our way, but also circle together and create larger crews for massive custom jobs that hit the schedule.

What’s next for Ogden Decks?

Ogden Decks in 2024 is focusing on improving our design, marketing, and influence in the market to grow our name and bring projects to life our customers can only dream about. Utilizing advanced design software, we are tackling more backyard projects to tie into our deck building and bring new services to the table in order to continue to set ourselves apart from our competitors. Specialist of the Year DeckWise

CASEY FENCE AND DECK

OWNERS: Dianna and Brendan Casey

LOCATION: Frederick, MD.

YEAR FOUNDED: 1999

INSTAGRAM: caseyfenceanddeck

FACEBOOK: Casey Fence & Deck

First of all, I would like to thank both DeckWise and Deck Specialist Magazine for choosing Casey Fence and Deck to be their Deck Specialist of the Year. It’s not often a builder gets the nod for being a top representative in their respective field. This is an honor and a blessing for me, my wife, and my teams. — Brendan Casey

How did Casey Fence and Deck get started?

When I was 15 years old, I graduated from working in the local lumberyard to being on one of their install crews. By 18, I was running my own sub crew and did this work to put myself through college, I even took my wife to a jobsite on our first date just to let her know what she would be in for. She loved being part of the project and the comradery of the crew. Together, we developed a real passion for the industry.

After college, I found I really detested the politics of office jobs, and missed the freedom of the outdoors, the smell of sawdust, and getting to use my hands to create beautiful outdoor living spaces. 25 years ago, my wife Dianna (Di) convinced me to chase my passion and Casey Fence and Deck was born.

We started out with an old truck and a five-gallon bucket full of tools. Now we have evolved into a 17time National Award Winning Deck Specialist. Don’t be afraid to follow your passion.

What gives Casey Fence and Deck an edge over competitors?

It starts with HEART, PASSION, and DRIVE. Next, it comes with identifying who your competition really is. Di and I both grew up playing sports at a highly

competitive level and thrived on being challenged. We share a common belief that yesterday’s effort is our greatest competition, not the 500 other names in a local search. We also share a willingness to outwork, outhustle, outperform, and outdeliver on our clients’ expectations every day. That attitude is shared by all of our team members, and at the end of the day, they are the difference makers.

Describe a recent project where Casey Fence and Deck used DeckWise.

Last year, we built two really nice ipe wood decks and used both the DeckWise Ipe Clip system and the Hardwood Wrench Jr. board straightening tool. Anyone who has ever worked with tropical hardwoods knows how temperamental they can be. The Hardwood Wrench Jr. is the absolute best tool I’ve ever used for keeping boards straight. The Ipe Clip is hands down the only real hidden fastening system I’ve found to keep boards flat and eliminating edge curl and more importantly, call backs.

What makes your team stand out?

I have two world-class crews that have both won national awards for their amazing work. We have developed a process that allows us to create what I call “Productive Excellence,” standardizing custom details most local companies aren’t willing to do. My guys have taken that to the next level with their drive to be the best. We give our team leaders ownership of their projects—in essence taking them from being employees to business partners on every project they perform. Whenever we win an award, we have duplicates made for our guys. It gives them more reason to believe in the process. This also creates a level of pride you seldom find elsewhere. My guys will always go the extra mile to succeed.

Tell us about your relationship with DeckWise. DeckWise has brought to market two of the most

important and influential products in the recent history of working with tropical hardwoods. The Hardwood Wrench Jr. has simplified installations where we would have destroyed multiple inferior board bending tools, and have on several occasions. The Ipe Clip has virtually eliminated call backs where other hidden fasteners seldom have the ability to control the strength of tropical hardwoods. This relationship has been a game changer.

What’s

ahead for Casey Fence and Deck?

I’ve always felt a different, higher calling than one that has me chasing the almighty dollar. Coming from a blue-collar background, money has never really been my motivator. I have always believed that if you give max effort every day, are 100% honest in all your dealings, and stay true to your morals, success will find you. At this point in my career, it’s more about giving back to an industry that has given so much to me. With 42 years’ experience, I have witnessed a tremendous evolution in all facets of deck building. With so many new and amazing opportunities, materials, and techniques, we have a greater need than ever before to maintain both our integrity and construction education. I see my company embracing and adapting to these new products, I also intend to be at the forefront, leading the way and training the next generation—Setting the Standard in Excellence. DS

Specialist of the Year FastenMaster

DECK PHENOM

OWNER: Michal Zatloukal

LOCATION: Carmel, N.Y.

YEAR FOUNDED: 2016

WEBSITE: deckphenom.com

INSTAGRAM: deckphenom

FACEBOOK: Deck Phenom

How did you get your start in construction?

As a fresh off the boat, 16-year-old immigrant, I started my construction journey working for a highend framing company every summer. I was working 10 hour days up to 60 hours a week. One Sunday during the summer of 2003, I went to do a side job with my then foreman, which was a pressure treated, wood deck, and I just fell in love with that kind of work. Fast forward to 2016, after almost 15 years of being involved in different aspects of construction, the concept for Deck Phenom was born and the rest is history.

How did you first begin to use FastenMaster?

The first time I got to see a FastenMaster screw was on a project in Katonah, N.Y. The crew working there came from the other side of the country and started putting up this huge timber frame octagon-shaped porch. They were using these really long black screws called TimberLOK to keep all the joints tight. I slowly started using these on my projects as well for any structural connections and other similar situations. Eventually, I discovered LedgerLOK and TrapEase screws. Over the course of last few years, we have used or tried every single FastenMaster product on the market except their new ICON ScrewJoist framing system. I can’t wait to get my hands on that one of these days.

Tell us about your team.

My team consists of a very small group of hardworking, reliable and responsible people who take pride in what they do and who also understand what it means to represent Deck Phenom. From my personal assistant, all the way down to the new guy on the job site, we all know what our mission statement is and what we need to do to get it done.

What are some of your favorite FastenMaster products, and why?

My all-time favorite product, I would have to say, is the ThruLOK. Why? Because who wants to drill holes thru every single post or beam and then go back with carriage bolts and nuts and a million washers when you can just drive the screw in while holding the cap on the other side. The time savings with that product is unbelievable. Also, I like the new EVO hanger. It has a unique look and really strong connection.

How has business changed in the past few years?

Business has been growing steadily in the last few years and kind of plateaued when covid hit. In 2023, I set some big goals for us and now we’re going after them one by one. We just won an award in the NADRA competition and are also involved in a couple of interesting projects this year.

What’s next for Deck Phenom?

Deck Phenom will continue growing and focus on delivering a high-quality experience for anyone that is interested and wants to work with us. We will also be more involved online and having a positive impact on the industry as well as motivating and providing resources to anyone looking to be a part of the real decking game. DS

Specialist of the Year MoistureShield

ALL DECKED OUT

OWNER: Glen Rodrigue, glenrodrigue@sbcglobal.net

LOCATION: Serving Fairfield, New Haven and Hartford, CT.

YEAR FOUNDED: Been in business over 20 years

WEBSITE: alldeckedoutct.com

How did your company get its start?

All Decked Out was established over 20 years ago. From the beginning, we had a vision and passion to help create, and deliver the ultimate outdoor living experience to families searching for more than the ordinary deck build. Our clients appreciated our innovative ideas, designs and our approach to not going into an appointment trying to “make a sale” or “landing the deal.” Our focus has always been to listen, ask questions, and understand the needs of families before any design was even started. It was clear early on that transparency, developing trust and strong relationships was going to separate All Decked Out from the other contractors. We pride ourselves as Deck Masters, creating the highest of quality craftsmanship and delivering outdoor living at its best!

How has using MoistureShield products enabled your company to grow?

MoistureShield’s innovative Cool Deck technology came out at a time when customers began searching for a composite decking material that wouldn’t be as hot compared to their existing deck. MoistureShield has also showcased our outdoor living spaces on several different platforms giving us exposure and more opportunities to grow.

Tell us about your team.

I am truly fortunate to have my team—and we are not here today without them. They are truly amazing, and I cannot thank them enough. No matter how difficult or challenging my design is, my team turns it into a reality. My project coordinator, Mike, is a true master carpenter and is as meticulous as they come.

Plan, quote and build outdoor structures faster and easier. Grow your construction business with free Outdoor Living software from Simpson Strong-Tie. No matter how difficult the challenge, Mike does not panic or faulter. His attention to detail is unmatched and has been with ADO from day 1!

Jamie is my team leader and is always the first to arrive onsite and the last to leave. Jamie is my top man, and he leads by example. A 12-hour day, six days a week is not out of the ordinary for Jamie. He is respected by the entire crew not only for his strong work ethic and dedication, but Jamie is a genuine person. Someone you can count on. Jamie has been with ADO for over 20 years! Christopher is part of the ADO family for life. Christopher is now retired; however, we speak daily. He dedicated his life to ADO and I am forever grateful.

My advice is to show your employees that you value them. Don’t be afraid to tell your crew how important they are and how much they mean to you. Learn more about your team. Ask questions. Call their favorite restaurant and leave a surprise gift card there for them. Purchase a gift card to a nail salon and have them give it to their wife so she knows how much you value them. Our employees work very long hours and give up valuable time away from their family and loved ones. It is important that we recognize how much they do for us. Your success as a deck builder is dependent on the team you lead.

Tell us more about a project featuring MoistureShield decking.

We recently completed an outdoor living space for an amazing family in Hamden, CT. Their concern was the amount of sun and how hot the deck would get during the day. They researched and selected MoistureShield Decking with Cool Deck Technology in color Cathedral Stone. Karen and Chuck were absolutely amazing to work with. From the first day we met, we put our thoughts together and started to create different concepts; however, it was important to incorporate as many elements as possible. We needed to build a multitier deck with multiple angles, stairs and fascia walls overlooking the inground pool and pool house. It had to be modern and clean with a streamline design that would include specific elements, stone, space, glass, aluminum, water and fire. As you can see, I believe we achieved our goal.

Have you ever worked directly with the MoistureShield team?

We have a very good working relationship with MoistureShield. Lainie Sleppin, national director of contractor development, checks in regularly and visits with us in the field. Lainie is very knowledgeable and supportive. She has been an amazing resource as we continue to grow.

What’s next for All Decked Out in Shelton, CT.?

We are only getting started! We are excited for the future as we continue to grow! One of our objectives is to explore ways in which we can give back to our community. Recently, I took a call from a client that needed a new deck. She wasn’t able to receive pictures on her phone and asked that I send the pictures to her husband’s phone which was at home. Later that evening, we spoke, and she began to explain that the deck was not safe anymore and how she recently lost her husband six months earlier. She said that had he still been alive, he would have taken care of everything as he was very good at fixing things. We discussed a budget and I could hear in her voice that she was worried. I asked if she was OK and she replied, that with his passing, she couldn’t afford it and she didn’t know what to do. Without hesitation I made it clear that there was nothing more for her to do. The existing deck would be removed, and we would build her a brand new deck at no cost. We can all do more for people. Give back to our communities and never forget to extend a hand when someone needs help.

Here at All Decked Out, our vision and passion remain the same. We will continue to create the most innovative outdoor living spaces possible. Although the industry has changed, our core beliefs have not. Developing trust, and strong working relationships with our clients will always be more important than the build. DS

Specialist of the Year MOSO

GRUNT WORKS CONSTRUCTION INC.

Tell us about how you started in construction?

Jose: I started when I was 17 years old. I didn’t want to work at my parents’ carniceria. I saw a truck starting to hire carpenters. I figured cutting pigs is no different than cutting wood! Construction has been very good for me and my family. I wouldn’t change it.

Bert: As a young man, deconstruction and rebuilding was innate for me. Natural drive to repair and fix was what propelled my interests in construction. As I saw my ability to learn not only one trade, but multiple, the thoughts of furthering were fostered. My first job with my brother was of being his “gopher” and running duct work for him. When I was able to negotiate my wages, (that) pretty much sealed the deal on my humble construction journey.

How did you first start using MOSO?

Jose: We started using MOSO when one of our distribution partners, Dave Cano at Boise (Cascade), and our lumberyard rep, Felicia Gale at Diamond Pacific, let me know of a dense, Class A fire-rated decking (big thing here in Northern California!). We were looking for something new and beautiful that could stand the test of time. I feel very confident we found it!

What inspires your projects?

Jose: Being outdoors is a blessing. When we are building MOSO decks for our clients, it’s much more than square footage—it’s purposeful and intentional. Also, we enjoy asking what (the customer) intends to use the deck for, and build it according to their vision as well. For example, they would love to barbecue on the left and have outdoor furniture

around their fireplace. We would separate these spaces with the decking using different size boards or designs.

Bert: As a combat veteran, everything done with my company has to reflect those brothers I have lost. The logo is modeled after my unit crest, “Climb to glory” is our motto. Every day I have the opportunity to serve is a day they will never have again, and I take this very seriously. Being able to serve others is paramount for Grunt Works, and recognizing the opportunity afforded to us by the men and women that have given it all inspires and motivates us on our projects.

Any projects for which the use of MOSO products has been beneficial?

Jose: Well, the list can go on for a long time. MOSO has made our construction company profitable and our homeowners happy with no callbacks. Below are my top three reasons (how MOSO has been beneficial):

1. It cuts, feels, and acts like exotic outdoor hardwoods, yet without the maintenance—and my team enjoys working with it.

2. It’s a stable and strong deck. Its linear expansion is relatively low or non-existent. Also, it’s not going to feel weak or bouncy in the hot times of the year.

3. Last, it has a Class A fire rating with a 25-year warranty. That gives our homeowners peace of mind on multiple levels, and their home insurance has peace of mind about the fire rating.

Tell us about your team.

Jose: Well, our team works really hard and laughs a whole bunch—probably one of the greatest groups of men I have had the privilege of being around. Shout out to Joe, the DJ; Jake Jabbroa, aka Mr. Incredible; Albert Meza, our North Light, and myself Jose Lopez.

What’s on the horizon for Grunt Works Construction?

Jose: Grunt Works Construction still has a heart for interior and exterior remodels. On the other hand, we are having such a blast in repair and remodel as well as constructing new decks. I feel like we are just scratching the surface, and feel very optimistic working with MOSO (Bamboo) Thermo Decking, as well as their siding.

Bert: Our mission is to serve faithfully the people of the state of California and beyond with honor, duty, and integrity. The foundations of this company reflect my duty to God and country, and especially to bring honor to those men and women who’ve given all to allow us to be a business. We hope to grow to serve our efforts to affect positive changes for our communities, and this means to be able to do charitable work, bring the trades back to young people by way of apprenticeships, and to employ veterans.

As a young construction company, the sky is the limit, but we acknowledge the duty we have to the people and to our brothers in arms so to speak in the contracting world. The horizon is wide, and our mission is to grow and build sustainable relationships with companies such as MOSO!

Of course we will always “climb to glory.” DS

Tell us about your construction beginnings. My dad owned a construction business when I was growing up, so I was always around the construction industry. When I graduated high school, the plan was for me to take over his business, so I started to work for him, but that only lasted a couple of months. After that, I decided to start my own landscaping business, but that changed and progressed as my interests changed and progressed into Premier Outdoor Living.

How did you first start using ProWood in your projects?

I believe I was first introduced to the product through my lumberyard. When I first started to use ProWood, I immediately noticed the difference in consistency and quality and never looked back. It makes a huge difference when framing with a quality product. It cuts down tremendously on wasted product and labor.

Any projects for which the use of ProWood was useful?

We use ProWood on all of our jobs, so it’s always useful. We use ProWood for all of our framing. We love the consistency in quality, so we know what we are going to get every time we use it. It makes framing a total breeze.

What’s ahead for Premier Outdoor Living?

At Premier Outdoor Living, we are always trying to challenge ourselves by building bigger and better things, whether that be through the construction of the project or the designs of our projects. DS

JC CONCEPTS

OWNER: Jay Palermo

LOCATION: Canandaigua, N.Y.

YEAR FOUNDED: 2003

WEBSITE: jcconceptsflx.com

FACEBOOK: jcconceptsroc

Tell us how JC Concepts got its start.

I grew up in construction and started my own house framing business in 2003 after high school. My design-build firm of today was built upon glowing referrals from repeat clients turned long-time friends.

How did you first start using RDI products in your projects?

A salesman approached me in 2015 and my clients, crew, and I have always been impressed with RDI’s quality, design variations, and ease of installation.

Where does your project inspiration come from?

We are a design-build firm dedicated to making our clients’ dreams come true, within the limitations of their budgets, architecture, and other unique lifestyle needs and site conditions. Our team and trusted tradespeople transform these ideas into custom elements that withstand harsh weather, scorching sun, and real life-living with families, friends and beloved pets.

What are some of your favorite RDI products, and why?

The RDI Avalon Glass Rail is a client favorite due to how it preserves unobstructed views of nature and can be easily maintained versus wide glass panels. We also install LED lighting in the glass rails so clients

can remotely control the color tones and ambiance according to their party, relaxation or holiday “ring of fire” needs around the lake.

Many clients’ properties overlook golf courses and lakes so the RDI systems get a lot of attention, plus prevent everyone from falling off the deck while stargazing or cheering for a touchdown! The vertical rails are also a great deterrent for climbing grandchildren and small dogs, too!

How has business been?

Business has been fantastic and we are growing at an incredible pace—thanks to so many positive referrals and customers pleased with the performance of their RDI elements. Value, style, and safety are top things our clients are seeking when investing in the outdoor comforts of motorized pergolas with drop down screens and vinyl shades, outdoor kitchens, media centers, fans, heaters, fire pits, putting greens, boat docks and more.

What’s ahead for JC Concepts?

We are expanding our outdoor living offerings to complement the boating and leisure lifestyle in our beautiful wine country region, and to extend the seasons that are getting milder. We will continue to incorporate RDI and durable construction elements with the creative water management and underdeck lighting solutions we designed to give our clients peace of mind for years to come. Tell us the history of how Baxter Construction began.

I officially opened Baxter Construction in 2019 after years of building decks on nights and weekends. I spent years building a name for myself in Niagara working in the union as a foreman. It got to a point that I was getting so many calls that it was time to make the jump and work for myself. Looking back now it is one of the best decisions I have ever made and am very proud of what I have accomplished over these few years.

Why do you prefer using Regal ideas as a primary vendor?

Regal ideas have been the staple of so many decks we have built. When it comes to quality and aesthetics, they are unmatched in the industry. Whether it being the LED lighting, glass or just the overall look of the product, they knock it out of the park. I have built an amazing relationship with them, and they will

always be the only aluminum railing system Baxter Construction ever uses.

Please share where your creative spins come from. Creativity has always been something that comes natural to me. Our goal is to give our customers something they never imagined they could have. I am very lucky to have customers that always let me run with the ideas that pop into my head and change things on the fly to make the build even better.

What are some of your favorite Regal ideas products, and why?

Our favorite and most-used Regal ideas product has always been the aluminum railing system in textured black. Whether it be glass or pickets it always complements our build and with the LED lighting open our customers are always blown away with the final product.

How has business been this past year?

Business has been great. We are a small operation with one crew and focus on quality over quantity.

What’s ahead for Baxter Construction?

Honestly, all we focus on is to keep building up our name. I take pride in being known as one of the best around. Staying humble and putting out honest quality work is our number one goal. DS

How did NJ Decks and Railings get started?

What Trex products are among your regulars?

We sell a lot of Trex Transcend decking and railing as well as the newer Trex Transcend Lineage and Trex Signature decking lines. Trex Signature railing is also very popular with our customers.

Any upcoming projects that you’re excited about?

NJ Decks and Railings was founded in 1970 by my dad, Cornelius Verblaauw under the company name Neil Verblaauw, Carpenter & Builder. In 1984, I became a partner, and we renamed the business C. Verblaauw & Sons. In 1988, we started working for condo communities and began replacing old decks. My dad retired in 2001 and, since then, my wife Judy and I have been the owners. We found our niche in the deck business and have since rebranded the company as NJ Decks and Railings. Last year, we were fortunate to be able to open a showroom for the first time in Ramsey, N.J.

We are starting a large, curved deck in Sparta, N.J., that will have a custom curved Trex Signature railing on it. We plan to submit this project for the NADRA deck awards that will be held next January.

What’s next for NJ Decks and Railings?

We are continuing to grow at NJ Decks and Railings and are excited about our new salesperson, Jim Kelley, and our new project manager, Chris Stergion. We are also happy to say that we are truly a family business with both of our daughters, Ashley Helbig and Ally Commoroto, working in the office with us. DS

AUSTIN DECK COMPANY

OWNERS: Abe & Jennifer Oeltjen

LOCATION: Austin, TX.

YEAR FOUNDED: 1984

WEBSITE: austindeck.com

INSTAGRAM: austindeckcompany

FACEBOOK: AustinDeckCompany

How did Austin Deck get its start?

Austin Deck Company was started in May of 1984 by my mentors and predecessors, Jeff and Dennis. They created the first custom deck specific company in Austin and slowly, but surely, built the business one deck at a time. They valued craftsmanship and commitment to the clients’ satisfaction over everything else. These are the values they taught me and continue to be our focus today.

Why is YellaWood an important vendor of yours?

YellaWood provides us with the best framing materials— both wood and metal—in our industry. The quality of YellaWood material is consistently high and we can depend on YellaWood for a very large piece of our needs. Not only do they provide framing, but they also (locally) carry many of the decking material and railing material we install for our clients.

Tell us about your program to get children interested in building, and why that is a passion of yours.

Austin Deck Company has been a member of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) and the offshoot Workforce Development Foundation organization for years. I have found that my experience coming into the industry resonates with the students we

serve in WDF. Our mission is to mentor, train, educate, and inspire our future workforce to promote a strong presence in the trades throughout the construction industry. We do this through speaker engagements in classrooms, grant programs for instructors with both tool and educational material needs, and a scholarship program for the students with which we engage. YellaWood continues to sponsor our efforts with both material and funds that make a huge difference to these young people interested in pursuing a career in the trades.

Where does your project creativity come from?

Project creativity comes from both our clients and our past experience. We know what the decking and framing material can do so our job is to match up our client’s vision to a design that is both buildable and can live through the test of time. The finished product is a collaboration between our clients, our project developers, and our talented construction crews.

What’s ahead for Austin Deck?

We continue to value our clients over everything else while adapting our projects to new and exciting materials, building codes, and regulations set forth in the municipalities in which we work. As simple as building a deck seems to some, we encounter the challenge of new scenarios and requirements almost every day. Our commitment to staying in front of these challenges is our focus presently and in the future. One example of this is the City of Austin’s requirement to protect heritage trees. As more infill construction starts in the density areas of our city, we pride ourselves in our ability to creatively build meaningful projects that both respect and protect our trees. DS

A Contractor’s Edge

CONTRACTOR PROGRAMS OFFERED by leading decking and railing brands highlight their commitment to empowering contractors, providing comprehensive support, and enhancing business growth. These programs offer financial incentives, marketing support, training, and exclusive benefits, creating robust partnerships between manufacturers and contractors.

Financial Incentives and Rewards

The Armadillo Premier Builder Program (pro.avon plastics.com/join) offers a 5% quarterly cash rebate on decking, fasteners and lattice from Avon Plastics, ensuring enhanced profitability for builders.

Doug DeLuca, VP of sales and marketing at Armadillo, states, “Armadillo’s Premier Builder Program is designed to reward builders who choose Armadillo decking. We take pride in offering straightforward benefits with cash rebates and tailored support to drive your business forward.” Newly enrolled builders receive several perks, including an impressive 8% rebate on their first submission. Contractors attain Premier Builder status after accumulating $20,000 in Armadillo receipts.

YellaSource (yellasource.com) is another program

that offers builders direct incentives when they sign up. Offered by Great Southern Wood Preserving, the program enables builders to earn 1.5% rewards on every purchase. As a YellaSource member, builders start receiving Yellabucks credits when they submit receipts of qualifying products from an authorized YellaWood dealer. Builders can also work with a personal YellaSource representative to redeem points based on their business needs.

Similarly, the Westbury Pro Rewards program (westburyprorewards.com) by Digger Specialties provides quarterly cash rewards and additional bonuses for top performers. Chris H. Beyer, director of Public Relations/Channel Marketing at DSI, emphasizes that Westbury Pro Rewards provide several benefits to deck builders who purchase and install Westbury Aluminum Railing products including having “a direct link to the company that produces the product they choose to install. As a result, they can receive product training, marketing support and ongoing information about new products and services.”

Additional benefits include being listed on the DSI/ Westbury website as an approved installer, which can result in more job leads. Deck builders and contractors

who become fully product trained can achieve the status as a Certified Master Pro, which enables them to achieve higher cash rewards.

AZEK’s The Board (timbertech.com/theboard) empowers contractors to earn funds with every installation of TimberTech, AZEK Exteriors, and StruXure products, which can be redeemed for marketing expenses, training, or cash. Jason Davoll, senior director of Contractor Development at The AZEK Company, says “It’s not just a loyalty program; it’s a growth engine for contractors, helping them reach more customers and close more deals.”

The MoistureShield Valued Partner (MVP) Certified Contractor Program (moistureshield.com/for-pros/moist ureshield-valued-partner) for decking and railing allows contractors to earn points on purchases along with 10 other Oldcastle sister brands including Belgard and Barrette Outdoor Living, that can be redeemed for various items, such as electronics, travel, appliances and cash. In addition, high-performing contractors have access to coop marketing funds.

Matthew Bruce, VP of sales at MoistureShield, remarks, “The MVP program and Oldcastle Partner Rewards Program solidifies our contractor partnerships as an investment in their success.”

“Contractor programs need to provide value at many different levels: for example, building in Find a Contractor for increased leads, helping them with strong co-op marketing and the ability to have a seven-year warranty after an inspection for decking and railing. This is a business booster and value our contractors appreciate— all in one location,” Bruce says.

Fiberon’s Certified Installer Program (fiberondecking. com/ascendant) is a tiered program for contractors, featuring three levels: Outdoor Pro, Outdoor Expert and

Outdoor Ambassador. The program includes access to the new Fiberon Outdoor Education Center, an online resource for training on Fiberon products, programs and company information. In addition, participants will receive exclusive labor warranties, leads, rewards and tools.

Marketing Support and Lead Generation

Marketing support and lead generation are crucial components of these contractor programs, helping contractors attract more business and stand out in the competitive market.

The Fortress Preferred Program (fortressbp.com/ about/preferred-program) offers advertising and social media templates to help contractors promote their services effectively. Scot Sheffield, director of Wholesale at Fortress Building Products, notes, “Contractor programs are a great low-risk/high-reward proposition that can jumpstart a company’s trajectory in the industry.”

The TrexPro Program (trex.com/resources/trex pro/becomeatrexpro) is the oldest, continuous pro contractor program in the decking industry with a proven track record of helping build profitable businesses by connecting contractors with homeowners. The program ensures significant exposure through trex.com and decks. com, along with access to professional web services and targeted digital media campaigns.

Todd Phariss, TrexPro program manager, explains, “TrexPros also benefit from Trex’s extensive marketing resources, including professional web services, targeted and paid digital media campaigns, vehicle wraps, and branded apparel—all designed to elevate their business.”

DeckStars (deckstars.com) by Regal ideas connects consumers with contractors, installers, retailers, and

manufacturers all in one place. The program was created to address the customer’s need for an expert, trained contractor who offers a “Do-It-For-Me” solution.

“The main objective of any DeckStar is to ensure that your backyard project is built in a worry-free environment and want to deliver an experience that exceeds all of your expectations,” says Andrew Pantelides, executive VP, Regal ideas.

Likewise, Armadillo’s Premier Builder Program provides complimentary social media ads tailored to the contractor’s market, increasing their visibility to prospective clients.

Training and Certification

Training and certification are essential elements that these programs offer to ensure contractors are well-equipped with the latest knowledge and skills.

Wolf PRO certification (wolfhomeproducts.com/professionals/ become-a-wolf-pro) includes meaningful training and education, strengthening the contractor’s business.

Jason Foura, VP market development, comments, “We focus on a more of a consultative approach—the training is not centered around product knowledge, but instead covers best practices and positions the contractor to be the best salesperson they can be by providing a realistic approach on how products best fit into the marketplace.”

The MoistureShield MVP Program provides access to the exclusive MoistureShield University for on-demand training, accommodating contractors’ busy schedules. Bruce explains, “The MoistureShield University learning platform is designed for contractors’ busy schedules and lets them chart their progress as they learn about our decking and railing.”

Exclusive Benefits and Warranties

Exclusive benefits and warranties provide contractors with an edge in the market, ensuring customer trust and satisfaction.

DSI’s Westbury Pro Rewards program allows contractors to offer a seven-year labor warranty provided they complete product training. Beyer states, “Westbury Pro Rewards also offers added bonus benefits to top performers and the opportunity to participate in a company-sponsored special event and roundtable on an annual basis.”

Wolf PRO contractors can offer an extended labor warranty and receive exclusive marketing tools such as free product literature and samples. Foura emphasizes, “The ability to offer clients/ homeowners an exclusive extended labor warranty is a significant benefit of becoming a Wolf PRO.”

Building Strong Partnerships

Building strong partnerships between manufacturers and contractors is a fundamental aspect of these programs. As MoistureShield’s Bruce mentions, “We consider our loyal contractors to be valued partners and programs like this can provide numerous tools to help them access business-building resources.”

The Fortress Preferred Program also validates builders to potential clients, enhancing their credibility and market position. Sheffield notes, “Being that many of our products are pretty innovative, (this) really helps contractors bring value and stay on the forefront of innovation while giving their customers piece of mind.”

Advantages for Consumers and Contractors

Consumers gain peace of mind that the job is done right, with warranties filed by the contractor and years of maintenance-free enjoyment. They benefit from innovation, safety, and style.

Contractors receive a full training program, lead generation, and easier installations with less energy required. This reduces the time to complete a job, leading to more profit.

By participating in these programs, contractors can achieve greater visibility, profitability, and success in the competitive decking and railing industry.

“Even if decking and railing are a small part of your overall business, being a recommended pro can often mean the difference between closing a sale or not,” Trex’s Phariss says. DS

THE CONFIGURATION of the new outdoor living space didn’t offer the homeowner as much usable yard space as they wanted for their dogs and kids. The backyard, which was built on top of a hill with a “tremendous slope,” forced the Top Gunn Decking and Home Improvement crew to re-envision how to maximize the space.

“We installed this project in The Crossings Subdivision in Harrisonburg, VA. (in December 2023). It is a new subdivision that doesn’t offer as much usable yard space that our customers are accustomed to,” explained Top Gunn Decking owner Zach Gunning. “The homeowner originally asked for the deck and screen porch, and then wanted to maximize their usable space by adding the patio.”

To add that space, the Top Gunn Decking crew, led by crew leader Lane Dinges, installed Trex RainEscape beneath the 24x12 open deck, which was built with Deckorators Voyage Sierra and Deckorators Dark Slate. Superior Plastics Products’ vinyl railing was custom cut by Dutchway Fencing LLC, Harrisonburg, to fit around the space.

The Top Gunn Decking crew then finished the space with Tru-Scapes riser lights, a 16x12, Screeneze-covered porch, and a PCA Products screen door.

The construction of the patio—specifically the addition of a 24”-wide monolith footer inside the patio—proved to be an engineering feat for the crew. “We originally weren’t sure where the load-bearing posts would go so the patio was designed so that the entire length of the patio was a code-approved, engineered and inspected footer so that we could customize our build as we went, or add more roof later,” Gunning explained. Harrisonburg-based Top Gunn Decking collaborated with nearby Custom Contracting of Virginia, Dayton, VA., to have the patio and engineered retaining wall installed. “We resolved some of (the lack of usable yard space) issue by

trying to maximize our build space in line with HOA regulations and city setback requirements.”

And even though Gunning said the biggest challenge of the build was the terrain, his company overcame it “by being creative in our setup while maintaining safety for our employees.”

His favorite aspect of the threeweek project was the way the new outdoor living space serves as a “focal point as you enter the subdivision.” He said he appreciates how his threeman crew worked “as a team on this larger project.” This gave him “a sense of pride in making this project come together.” DS

Top Gunn Decking Harrisonburg, VA., overcame a steep terrain and a lack of usable yard space to re-envision this homeowner’s space.

Pick Up Your Tools and KEEP GOING FORWARD

Eddy - the namesake, your reputation, the first representation of you as a person when people read your business name.

Family - your reason, your support, your original team, the people who will push you forward and drag you out.

Contracting - The blessing. The curse. An addiction to some, sobriety for others. The greatest thing you ever get to do with your life, and a living nightmare at the same time.

This article will not have any tool reviews, tips and tricks, or anything normal for a contracting article. The sole intent of this article is to give insight into what it is like to be a small contractor, and hopefully help someone out there—even one person—pick their tools back up and keep going forward.

I STARTED IN RESIDENTIAL NEW CONSTRUCTION framing back in 2016. I was a year out of college with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a whole lot of debt. I couldn’t find a job in my field that would pay

me more than $9/hour. I was working for a landscaping company, absolutely hating my life, and wondering what I was going to do with myself.

A very good friend at the time reached out to me; he was sick of hearing about my job and desperately needed help. I couldn’t read a tape measure, didn’t own any tools, and had no clue what he did for work. “Perfect. You can start tomorrow.”

I started framing in one of the hottest summers of the past decade. It was brutal work. I was sprinting around and pouring in effort to make up for lack of knowledge. I thought I was going to die some days from heat exhaustion, but I was absolutely hooked on construction. I loved the process, loved the “brothers in arms” mentality, loved the instant gratification of seeing your efforts pay off right in front of your eyes every day.

Fast forward six years and my wife is pregnant. I’m wondering what direction we move from there. A (very rare) frank conversation with my father solidified in my mind that I had to run my own business one day. Fast forward another year and a half, a couple more bad employers and one great boss/mentor who basically

gave me an accidental shove off, and now I’m running my business full time, working alone, and the only person I can blame for success/failure is me. My future is now squarely on my shoulders.

Working for yourself as a contractor is kind of like Whose Line Is It Anyways? where the rules are all made up and the points don’t matter.

When you are starting out, there are several things that no one can give you answers for. Pricing can be a crap shoot. You can go up and down thousands of dollars, and get the cold sweats before you finally have the conviction to settle on a final asking price for labor from a potential customer—and then they might ghost you, call you crazy, or make you feel like your time isn’t worth what you think it is (this one always hurts me the most).

Oh, you think you keep a tight schedule? Good luck! Here’s some rain and a hidden problem you didn’t foresee, and now your job is three days longer

than you planned, and more than likely you’re eating that cost and apologizing to your next client.

Good luck finding reliable, talented—breathing—employees, which means you are now your star laborer, layout man, cut guy, and garbage collector. You feel fragile, like one wrong move can sink you at any moment, or that people might be judging your work and ruining your reputation.

You may lie awake at 1 a.m. thinking about how you’re going to solve tomorrow’s problems, worrying about issues that may never come to fruition, or plotting the perfect strategy just to get holes shot through it by 9 a.m. Your body is tired, your mind is tired, you are stretched thin, and stress is your new best friend. This is the dark side of ambition.

But you don’t quit. That word isn’t in your vocabulary. You learn to laugh at problems instead of crying over them. You become tough. People are depending on you. You jump into deep water and swim. Like a duck, you appear calm and smooth above the water, but under the surface you are paddling like hell. You put one foot in front of the other, and you do not come to a stop. When you are exhausted from a hard day, you walk in the door, you get a second wind, and you give your family 100% too because that’s what they deserve. Nothing and nobody will beat you.

But there is light that shines on you too. You make more money. You gain control of your time (read: you get your weekends back to yourself). You get more time with your family. When a job is well done and people love the work, it’s your name on it, not someone else’s. Credit is given where it’s due, and you are able to control your future instead of waiting for someone else to take care of it for you. And maybe one day, someone builds upon the foundation that you have formed. But at the very least, your life is now firmly in your own hands.

So, if you are reading this, and going through a rough time or thinking of hanging it up and quitting, put the toolbelt back on. Wipe the dirt off, take your next step, don’t even think about slowing down. Things will get better. You will get better. Bad times will always pass and better days will come. If nobody else believes you, you can rest assured that I am out here doing the same exact thing, and I believe in you, like I believe in myself. There is plenty of work out there, and someone has to do it, so why not us? Go out and make it a great day! DS

Your customers have questions. Good answers lead to increased sales.

KNOWING SOME OF THE BASICS about purchasing and using preserved wood for residential outdoor projects will help you find the right answers for your customers.

Find the product best suited for the intended use

The American Wood Protection Association’s Use Category System ranks preserved wood products according to the level of protection needed to ensure the products will perform as expected under the conditions where they are used. The system ranks all preserved wood products into one of five Use Categories, UC1 through UC5. The higher the number, the higher the protection level.

For residential outdoor projects, products rated UC3 and UC4 will suffice. These categories are often referred to as “above ground” (UC3) or “ground contact” (UC4). A handy infographic available for download at https://preservedwood.org/uses/residential will help you recommend the right protection level for most residential uses.

Preserved wood products typically carry an end label which includes the product’s Use Category along with other useful information, including a preservative

TYPICAL END LABEL

brand name or logo, the name and location of the treatment facility, the preservative used and its retention level and the trademark of an accredited inspection agency. Look for the Check Mark logo; it assures the preserved wood product has been thirdparty verified that it was properly produced according to AWPA standards. Often the back of the end label will include warranty information.

Product use

Customers commonly are planning to have a deck or fence built, have landscaping or perhaps raised beds or planter boxes built. Whatever the project is, your customers’ most common questions will likely fall into one of the following categories:

Is preserved wood safe?

In a word, yes.

The most common preservative used to treat wood for residential use is Copper Azole (CA-C). CA-C was developed as a replacement for Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) which was volutarily phased out of use for residential products more than 20 years ago.

A waterborne preservative, CA-C’s main preservative is copper, accounting for 96% of the active ingredients. Azoles serve as a co-biocide for added protection. A 12’long 2x6 treated to ground contact with CA-C contains the amount of copper found in 13 copper pennies.

Studies involving planter boxes built with preserved wood have proven that the preservative will not leech into soil and become absorbed by vegetables grown in the planter boxes or raised beds. While it does a great job protecting wood from insects

like termites and carpenter ants, preserved wood poses no risk to bees or other pollinators.

Preserved wood products are safe to handle. Users should take they same precautions they would when working with untreated wood products—wear gloves to avoid getting splinters and use a mask and eye guards to protect against sawdust.

Do I need special fasteners?

Because copper, the primary active ingredient today’s preservatives, is corrosive to steel, fasteners and other hardware (such as joist hangers for decks) should be hotdipped galvanized steel, stainless steel, silicon bronze or copper. The most common of these is hot-dipped galvanized fasteners.

Treating cut ends and holes

During pressure treatment, preservatives are integrated into wood cells to create a protective shell, leaving the core of the wood product unprotected by the preservative. Cutting or drilling holes will expose those untreated parts of the wood, giving decay fungi and insects an opportunity to attack it.

As such, it is important to field treat cuts and holes

with a brush-on preservative such as copper napthenate. A formula containing 2% copper napthenate is recommended, although in regions of the country with drier climates a 1% solution will suffice. Copper oxine preservatives, commonly used for treating log homes, are also suitable for field treating.

Regardless of the field treatment chosen, follow the instructions on the label for application. Use a paint brush and apply the preservative liberally so it can reach deep into the wood fiber. Be sure to coat all cuts and apply preservative deep into any holes.

Disposing of scraps

Preserved wood can be disposed of just like any other wood scraps, with one key exception—preserved wood should never burned in open fires, stoves or fireplaces. The simplest way to dispose of unwanted preserved wood is to send it to a landfill.

The State of California has its own rules regarding preserved wood disposal. Details can be found at TWWDisposal.org. DS

Confessions of a Deck Builder II

IF YOU’RE IN THIS BUSINESS LONG ENOUGH, you’ll have some stories to tell. Some you’re proud of and some you’re just glad you survived. In the May/ June 2023 issue, I wrote a column “Confessions of a Deck Builder” where I shared several job-related experiences. This column is similar and includes a continuation of my “unique” experiences.

Most of my experiences go back to my days of contracting, but one was more recent.

For example, in 2019 while doing the Versatex Roadshow, I learned that if you pull into a Hampton Inn in Traverse City, MI., at 6 p.m. with a full tank of gas and you’re tired and distracted and forget to turn your Ram 1500 off, it will still be running at 10:15 a.m. the next morning (16 hours and 15 minutes later) with a fuel gauge reading of below empty.

Lear Delivery

My other experiences go back many years.

In March of 2000, we were trying to meet a deadline on a job for one of the founders of a major box store chain. This was a large residential project that included numerous rectangular glass panels along with over 30 glass sections that had to be cut with a side radius. All of this was sourced locally in the Atlanta, GA., area. But one 6’-radius panel with a vertical curve couldn’t be. (Radius glass on decks was not common in 2000.)

After a long search I found a glass company in Newark, N.J., that could bend and provide the panel

and get it to us the week before our completion date. The Thursday of the week prior to our deadline the glass arrived. But it was in a million pieces shattered inside the crate.

After emptying the flask in my glove box, along with a quick phone session with my therapist, I made a call to the supplier in New Jersey who assured me he would fast track another piece and that he would have it ready by Tuesday morning. As it turned out, one of my crew leaders was from Jersey and he agreed to drive up, spend the night with his family, pick the glass up and bring it back.

I called the head of construction (who had been my contact for this project) and told him the situation and that my guy was going to make the drive and get it. I had developed a good relationship with him, which really paid off. I’ll never forget him saying, “You know, we have a Lear jet just sitting over at the airport. What if we flew it up there and picked up the glass? Would that work?” I said, “Yes, sir, I believe it would.” And that’s what we did. The vendor met the jet crew at the airport, loaded up the precious cargo, and took it for a ride on a Lear jet back to Atlanta. My guys met the plane and handled the crate like an injured patient. And it actually fit, so we wrapped up the job with two days to spare!

Sunbathing in Little Five Points, GA.

One of the first jobs I did near Atlanta was in an area known as “Little Five Points.” It was like a step back

in time with a feel of the 1960s and 1970s with a hippie vibe. Lots of peace and love, and apparently a shortage of clothing.

I’ll never forget on the first day my helper turned around with his eyes wide and said, “Homey, there are two naked women lying on the deck next door.” We were in an elevated position, so I was able to quickly verify that there were in fact a couple of nude subjects, one lying in lounge chair and another in a little blue plastic Walmart pool just 40’ away.

This was a first for me and as it turned out this was a daily routine of sunbathing that coincidentally corresponded with our now unlimited and flexible break times. They knew we were there and probably noticed that the noise levels dropped when they came out. I remember that the privacy fence on their end of the deck was the last thing we built, and a job that should have taken four or five days, took an extra day or two.

Bobby Jones Golf Course Flood

I remember doing a project at the Bobby Jones Golf Course that involved replacing the railing on one bridge and rebuilding another bridge over an existing steel structure. One day, I got a call that one of the guys had been hit in the neck by a golf ball after someone hooked their tee shot. This caused my guy to almost fall off the bridge into Nancy Creek. He thought he was okay, but wanted to go home. I figured that would be our only drama for this job. It wasn’t.

This particular crew included big NASCAR fans and there was a race at Atlanta Motor Speedway that weekend. They asked if they could take off early Thursday since they camped and needed to prepare to arrive on Friday. We were within a day or two of finishing the job and I wanted to wrap it up, but I agreed to it. I mean what difference could a day or two make?

Well, as luck would have it, torrential thunderstorms moved in late that weekend and flooded the Nancy Creek area. This was a fairly common occurrence in that location, but I had never had a few thousand dollars of floatable material there when it happened. I drove down once the water had receded to assess the situation.

When I pulled up to the site, all that remained was a dumpster with watermarks within inches of the top. A full bundle of banded 4x6s, along with a huge stack of precut 4x6 rail-post, were nowhere in sight. A nearly full unit of 2x6s and other miscellaneous lumber items had also disappeared. In fact, it was a clean site except for the dumpster. I remember being unpleasantly surprised that full unit of 4x6s could even float.

I drove downstream to Nancy Creek Drive and pulled over and looked down from the bridge. Sure enough, there were a bunch of 2x6s all clustered and jammed up like toothpicks along with other debris at the bridge base, but the unit of 4x6s was nowhere in sight...and they were never seen again.

I have enjoyed other life-shortening experiences throughout the years that included learning that if a customer turns on their existing floodlights 6” away from the new porch rafter tails that you installed, where the porch ties into the existing soffit, it can burn a perfectly round hole and it will be smoking and look like a wood burning project when you arrive the next day.

I also experienced that customers often react differently when you give them a higher price for a change order. Sometimes they can be so rattled, they back through their garage door without remembering to open it.

And I learned that even when your crew leader tells you the customer is not home and you start peeing in the bushes, he could be mistaken. Not me of course, but a friend. DS

The Great Divide

AT A TIME WHEN our industry is rife with competition, what are you doing to set yourself apart from the herd? Why should a prospective client choose your brand for their project? What’s the secret ingredient to your special sauce? Do you have one or are you here seeking that unique concept that will take you from being a builder to being a SPECIALIST, one of the ELITE of your local industry?

According to Jeff Robertson at Advantage Trim and Lumber, ELITE represents a few characteristics beyond creativity and building long lasting decks. You must be a CHAMP first. One who displays great “character,” honor in all they do, and a great attitude toward clients and peers. A mentor to others. Has persevered through the tough times and learned from their mistakes.

You must be able to “Set the Standard in Excellence” for clients to view you as ELITE and be attracted to your style, and not just a price. There will always be low-profit work for the cheapest guy in town, but that pond is overflowing with people guaranteeing to do it for less. If you are like a lot of others in a community like ours, with over 500 competitors, creating space can be extremely difficult, especially when low price is your claim to fame.

Education is a major key in setting yourself apart. Unfortunately, for the consumer in need of a new outdoor living space, the vast majority of builders will have a pedestrian level of knowledge when it comes to codes and building practices. They are lead down a path of misinformation with the tempting reward of a cheap price. It is our responsibility to get them back on track with an understanding of what goes into creating their backyard dream.

Do you and your crew leaders carry a copy of the current deck building codes with you at all times? Have you researched the difference between UC4A and UC4B treated framing (major difference), or alternative framing products like steel, aluminum or fiberglass reinforced composites? Even if you aren’t in a market or price point community to use it, you should be knowledgeable and articulate on the subject.

Have you researched all the different manufacturers,

and installation guidelines, and guarantee to meet them? A quick drive through any neighborhood will easily expose the fact that the vast majority do not. Problem is, most have zero idea that they are falling short.

In speaking with a builder the other day, he expressed to me he had no idea why the inspector failed his stairs with composite boards because they were framed 16” on center. He didn’t know the warranty specs called for 12”, but I doubt his client was aware of his ignorance.

So, what is your extraordinary twist, your hook, the branding trait that sets you apart from all the others? For some it’s amazing picture frame borders. Creative fascia designs that jump off any screen. Mix and blend multiple board colors and widths. Maybe you specialize in larger 6x6 rail post sleeves with a full width cocktail rail, or add lighting in the deck or rails. Creating imaginative inlays or blend multidirectional board patterns. Bar tops or something different to your post and beam wrap.

Andy Henley of Hen-House says it starts with CREATIVITY—do something that stands out. Take a risk, blend colors, or incorporate inlays.

Lou from The Deck Nerds says to think outside the box. Utilize space to its fullest. Take pride in your work, always building to manufacturers’ specs.

Provide the client with a deck that suits their design style and budget while maximizing creative freedom. Having won multiple national awards, Lou has a penchant for creating unique beauty in limited spaces.

Scores of others reached out to say their difference makers are: returning calls, show up on time, deliver what you promise, use better material, focus on details, and provide competitive pricing. They are licensed, bonded, insured, and are the best in their communities. But these were the basic minimum standards being taught 42 years ago when I first broke into the industry. This shouldn’t be considered the high water mark of business; they are still minimum standards. Being a Deck Specialist, separating yourself from the competition, creating that Great Divide, is about going beyond expectations.

Setting the Standard in Excellence isn’t just a catch phrase, it’s a mindset and a philosophy about being the shepherd and not one of the sheep. Go be the shepherd of your community. DS

LET’S TALK deck demolition and how Demo-Dek isn’t just another tool—it’s a must-have tool. Imagine tearing off old deck boards in minutes instead of hours. You can put your pry bars on the sideline; this tool removes entire boards at once, even with those stubborn ring shank nails and rusty screws. Unlike traditional wreckers, the Demo-Dek leverages both bodyweight and a smart design to make deck removal a breeze. But how does it work? Why is it a game-changer? Buckle up—we’re about to explore the Demo-Dek difference.

Mike: Our crews have been using the older Demo-Dek to remove decking for several years, so we were extra excited to get our hands on the latest version. The earlier version had an adjustable head that you could change for different thicknesses of deck boards. The adjustable part was the only part that ever broke on us. The new version changed to a solid head, which I feel will make this thing virtually indestructible! It also has a nail puller on the back side of the head, which is handy for a quick nail pull or to pry up a board that you can’t fit the flat bar in. The back side of the head also works well as a big hammer for breaking out blocking or bridging.

Andy: I’ve been in the decking industry for 12+ years. My company and I have seen all kinds of existing decks that we had to demo. I swear every year we look for a new method or tool to make this process more efficient. So,

DEMO-DEK

– $144.9 Use promo code TNT10 ($10 off one Demo-Dek)

when we were discussing this Demo-Dek tool, I thought, “Here’s another product that will do the same thing as all the others I have in my arsenal.” I can happily say I was wrong and Demo-Dek is the real deal! The product’s base is wood, which I thought maybe would be its weakness, but it is solid and would take a lot to break. The bottom base is thick steel, powder-coated black. It has a prying mechanism on one end and a flat bar that fits nicely under a deck board. This flat bar is really what makes the tool work better than others. As you place the tool under the existing decking, the flat bar helps with the leverage and the pressure. With a quick pull, the decking pops right out.

Mike: Although you can use one of these tools to get the job done, I highly recommend getting two Demo-Dek tools and working in pairs. This really makes the tool shine. It’s actually a lot of fun when you get synced up with one another on an older deck and rip up a section of decking within a minute or two. I also really like how it makes removing decking safer. The handle gets pulled towards you and towards the side of the deck that has not been removed, keeping all momentum on the solid side of the deck. Your back will also be happy with the great leverage and the fact that you get to use your body weight to help pop the boards up.

Andy: We’ve used this tool for the demolition of five decks so far and every project ran smoothly—impressing

Contractor’s Corner

ONE OF THE FIRST power tools I ever used was the circular saw. I was given my first one at about 10 and told to watch my fingers. That advice and that saw started my love of building.

Traditionally the circular saw is used to cut standard straight lines and is often neglected for more precise work. However, with practice, the circular saw can be an essential tool in more intricate designs. For example, when installing cocktail rail, I have found the circular saw can be used not only to make the initial cut, but also the more precise final cut to ensure a smooth joint. With the variety of blades available, the circular saw can be used for demo, rough framing, fine cabinetry, cement boards, or metal work.

I find the circular saw to be an essential component to every project regardless of size or complexity.

Manuel Hernandez Deck artist Texas Deck Pros Txdeckpros.com @texasdeckpros

my crew to the point of bragging about who gets to use it!

For us, it’s important to get a rhythm going as well and this helps us be more efficient. There were a few times we had old decking that was cupped and it would split in the middle and throw our pace off. I feel like if the flat bar was longer on the bottom, it could have a deeper bite and that problem might have not happened. Not a huge issue, we quickly got back in our groove.

Overall, this is definitely a tool that we will use again and again.

In summary, Demo-Dek’s engineering isn’t just nuts and bolts; it’s practical brilliance. It’s the symphony of physics, leverage, and craftsmanship that makes deck demolition efficient. We give two thumbs up to the engineers behind this product! DS

Pros:

durable materials, well-planned engineering, time saving, safer pulling boards towards you

Cons:

wish the flat bar was longer (in some cases) Overall TNT Score 9.9/10

The Holy Trinity of Marketing: Right Message, Right Time, Right People

EY THERE, deck builders! Ready to take your marketing to the next level? Let’s dive into the holy trinity of marketing: delivering the right message at the right time to the right people. This simple formula can make a huge difference!

Most deck builders who understand the importance of marketing are building high-value custom projects. It’s not realistic to think someone will just decide one day to invest $50-$150k on a new deck with the first builder they find online. No way. You have to guide them through their journey subconsciously, from the initial idea, through general research about decks, to finally deciding who they want to build it. That’s what this is all about.

THE THREE-STEP DANCE TO WINNING DECK CLIENTS

First things first, let’s get familiar with your customer’s journey: Awareness, Consideration, and Decision. Each step is crucial, and here’s how you can master them:

Awareness: This is where you grab attention. Eyecatching social media ads with stunning before-and-after shots of your best projects work wonders. People love a good transformation story. Videos are gold here too. A quick clip showing your team in action can make folks stop scrolling and start dreaming about their own deck transformation. This initial hook is crucial because it starts building familiarity, and studies show people need about eight touchpoints to engage, with some sources suggesting up to 20 for colder leads (HubSpot).

Consideration: Now that you’ve got their attention, it’s time to engage. Write detailed blog posts like “How to Choose the Right Deck Design” or “Everything You Need to Know About Investing in a Low Maintenance Deck.” These posts show you know your stuff and help with SEO, making your site a helpful resource for Google to send searchers to. Develop a comprehensive FAQ section to answer

common questions about materials, costs, timelines, and maintenance. This builds trust and helps people make informed decisions.

Decision: Finally, seal the deal. Showcase your success stories with client video testimonials. Real stories from happy clients build trust and make you the obvious choice. And as you know, there’s nothing like a glowing review to boost your credibility. Build a projects/ case study section on your site to showcase specifics like before-and-after photos, materials used, location, challenges, and solutions. Including a price range helps set clear expectations as well.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Timing can significantly impact your marketing effectiveness.

Seasonal Relevance: Tailor your content to the seasons. In spring and summer, promote outdoor living enhancements and low-maintenance decks. In fall and winter, focus on planning and designing for the next season. People may not start projects in winter, but they dream and plan. Coming from a cold state, I know how planning summer projects helped me cope with winter. Be the first deck builder they see so when they’re ready,

you’re top of mind. Retarget with ads and follow up with email content to stay connected.

Engagement Timing: Figure out when your audience is most active online. Use tools like Google Analytics to track peak times and schedule your posts and newsletters accordingly. This boosts engagement and keeps your audience coming back for more. Consistent engagement helps build a relationship with your audience, moving them closer to making a purchase. Test, test, test too!

HITTING THE BULLSEYE: EFFECTIVE AUDIENCE TARGETING

Hitting the right target is just as important as aiming.

Audience Segmentation: Use tools like Facebook Ads Manager or Google Analytics to segment your audience based on location, age, interests, and behavior. Google Analytics can help you identify which pages your audience visits most often, what time of day they are most active, and which devices they use. Then, craft tailored campaigns for each segment to increase engagement and conversions. This targeted approach ensures your message reaches those most likely to convert.

Personalization: Personalize your emails. Using the recipient’s name and providing recommendations based

on their previous interactions with your brand makes them feel special and valued. Personalized marketing helps create a connection, making it more likely for prospects to turn into loyal customers.

THE FINAL WORD: MAKE YOUR MARKETING WORK FOR YOU

There you have it, folks. Marketing might seem daunting, but with the right approach, it’s a game-changer. Remember, the right message at the right time to the right people is your ticket to success. If you need a hand or want to dive deeper, feel free to book a strategy call with me or ping me on social. As always, keep moving forward. DS

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MATERIALS

and underdecking system for a secondstory deck can determine its longevity. According to Frank Pologruto, founder and owner of Decks & More, Smyrna, GA., using incorrect materials on an uncovered, upper deck built with tile and grout can cause significant problems.

“When the wrong materials are used, there’s no room for the water to drain through underneath the deck,” Pologruto explains. “Certain tiles need spaces between them without grout so the water drains through it.” Without proper drainage, the deck could start leaking in as little as six to nine months and potentially fail within 10 years.

To avoid such issues on a recent project in Atlanta, GA., Pologruto chose durable, exotic Brazilian ipé with a 1/4” gap purchased from Advantage Lumber. He also installed a Haven Underdeck ceiling system beneath the deck to divert water toward the gutters and downspouts into a drainage system embedded in the ground.

The six-month project covered approximately 1,350 sq. ft., including a 14’x24’ screened-in room, a 14’x24’ side deck, and a 14’x48’ area beneath the deck. The outdoor space was designed for year-round entertainment, providing protection from the weather for the homeowners and their guests.

Additionally, the project featured a small retaining wall, outdoor pavers, PVC-dressed columns, a Stovall customstacked stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings, custom cedar rails from Metro Building Products atop black aluminum railings with balusters, and a beadboard ceiling with mini beams.

For Pologruto, multi-level projects are a common undertaking for his company. His crews, ranging from two to four men depending on the project, complete 20-30 jobs a year, with each project averaging between $100,000 and $300,000.

Pologruto credits his success over the past 23 years to trusting his crew. He acknowledges that while he knows a lot, he relies on experts like his mason, Jose, for certain decisions. “Bring out the experts and trust your guys,” he advises. DS
