With 12 months to go until Year 2000 (Y2K), the prospect that most computers won't be able to read the new century's date has caused a widening pool of anxiety, plus forecasts of economic ruin and social disruption.
AT&T says it will spend $900 million before January l, 2000, to fend off problems. Motorola worries that its police and fire systems could malfunction, with disastrous.results for the public. Deutsche Bank Securities sees aTOVo chance of a recession because of "a glitch in the flow of information." The U.S. Coast Guard says shipboard systems.and port facilities could malfunction causing far-reaching problems, including mishandling of hazardous materials.
Samsonite spent $10 million to correct the Y2K problem before it happened. Despite the efforts of 20 outside consultants, it didn't work. Trucks went to the wrong stores, forklifts to the wrong locations in the warehouse. In six months they lost $4 million in profits and $10 million in sales.
Yet the chairman of President Clinton's Year 2000 commission says he is so confident that there won't be major problems that he has booked a December 3I, 1999, flight to New York with a next day return to Washington, D.C. Despite this, reports are rife that most state and federal government bureaucracies are woefully underprepared for Y2K.
Companies big and small that are ready for 2000 (or think or hope they are) are concerned that their suppliers will not be able to function normally, thus involving them in the problem. Just-in-time deliveries, which can be twitchy in the best of circumstances, will send trouble up and down the chain if disruptions occur. The Union Pacific fiasco has already demonstrated what can happen in distribution when a key transportation factor grinds to a halt.
The good news is most everyone is now aware of the problem and a year separates us from the new millennium. The bad news will come all too surely to those who underestimate the situation.

Frame iob l-ioist compatible glulams provide solid floor traming systems
fD ULDING on the foundation of -fDrecord-breakins sales for wood Ijoists, manufactureis of glued laminated timbers are producing I-joist compatible products that allow distributors to package fully-engineered floor framing systems.
One of the key advantages of using I-joists in residential floors is the capability of employing long, continuous lengths, often used in multiple span applications that require intermediate walls or beams to carry the floor loads. Glulam beams provide an efficient, cost-effective load-bearing alternative to solid sawn and other engineered lumber products, according to APAThe Engineered Wood Association.
While glulams are often specified for their aesthetic characteristics in such residential applications as exposed roof beams, they are also excellent structural framing members for concealed applications such as garage door headers and now, with added depths available, for concealed floor beams in I-joist framing systems.
The most common residential Ijoist depths are9-l/2" and l1-7l8", which compete with 2xl0 and2xl2
lumber joists. In addition, some 14" and 16" depthjoists are used in floor systems when longer spans or wider joist spacings are needed or heavier loads must be carried.
Glulams have significantly higher design stresses than conventional sawn lumber or timbers and can be manufactured to carry virtually any residential floor load.
Glulam beams used in residential applications are most typically specified as a
continuous lengths,
24F-1.88 structural grade, which means they have a fiber stress in bending of 2400 psi and a modulus of elasticity of 1,800,000 psi. Glulams also have higher allowable horizontal shear stress than sawn lumber with values ranging between 210 psi and 270 psi, depending on the species.
The most common I-joist compatible (IJC) glulam depths are consistent with the most common I-joist depths
9-U2", tr7t8", 14" and 16." These depths conform to PRI-400, the APA-promulgated performance standard for I-joists used in residential construction.
In addition to providing IJC depths, glulams can be manufactured in full 3ll2" and 5-ll2" widths, the same as 2x4 and2x6 wall framing, eliminating the need to furr or frame around these beams where they are used in supporting walls. Such beams are designated as having a framing appearance which is suitable for any concealed application.
Engineered Wood Systems, a related corporation of APA, that provides trademarking for approximately 70Vo of the glulam beams produced in North America, has developed standard load span tables for the IJC depth beams having a width of either 3-l/2" or 5-112." The load span tables and additional information about glulams can be found at www.apawood.org, or by calling APA s product support help line at (253) 620-7400.

ORE building material dealers in the West are selling garage doors, enticed by higher profit margins-upward from 20Vo to 33Vo.
Successful garage door marketing techniques range from simple, to sophisticated. "Word of mouth is a big help for us," said one dealer. "Many times a customer has seen a garage door sold by us on a building and asks the building owner for a referral, and that brings a new customer into the store."
To increase door sales and profit margins, many dealers are developing comprehensive marketing promotion programs that include in-store displays, product literature, package sales and a full-service sales and installation program.
One of the most effective ways to build sales is by featuring an in-store
display that piques the interest of customers. Prospects who have been thinking about replacing a garage door suddenly become more interested in buying when they see the display.
By looking at an effective display, customers immediately can see the quality of materials that make up the doors.
Another popular method of increasing profit margins on garage door sales is by creating a "complete package" sale, or selling related products. According to one dealer, margins can soar as high as 6OVo by selling the opener and weatherstripping along with the door.
Creating a package deal that includes the garage door and necessary extras makes it easier for buyers when decision-making time comes. Dealers who don't have a package created, at least should be sure that salespeople ask customers the right questions:
Do you need an opener with the door?
Do you want door jamb weatherstripping?
Do you want additional insulation?
Do you need low headroom options?
Do you require back hangs and other necessary materials to install the door?
Would you like window lites?
To better serve customers, more dealers are establishing full-service sales and installation programs by dedicating staff members and providing training on garage door service and installation. While such pro-
grams require a financial commitment on the part of the dealer, they can more than pay for themselves. An experienced installation crew can put in three to four garage doors and openers in a day.
In addition to using marketing, dealers believe partnering with a reliable, customer-driven manufacturer is key in successfully selling garage doors. Dealers suggest the following:
o Find a manufacturel that offers an extensive line of quality products with plenty of colors, decorative window options and competitive pricing. Homeowners want their gutters, soffits, fascia covers, windows and garage doors to match. Locating a manufacturer that has models in a wide range of colors and window lites broadens Your customer reach.
o Make sure the manufacturer's sales staff is knowledgeable and serviceoriented. A good sales rep will call

as high as 60% by selling the opener and weatherstripping along with the door.
on your store regularly and be receptive and helpful when a problem arises.
o Research the manufacturer's warehousing and distribution capabilities, as this has a great impact on product delivery and inventory.
Crucial to any successful garage door program is knowing how to handle the doors to eliminate damage and maximize profits. To eliminate denting, bending and scratching:
o Make sure door sections are carried on their edge, rather than flat.
r Be careful not to strap doors down too tightly when delivering them. Cardboard corner protectors evenly distribute strap pressure.
When you combine progressive marketing and safe handling techniques with the right product mix for your market, your garage door sales and profits are sure to bring more dollars to your bottom line.
MATCHING or contrasting lites and inserts gives a coordinated look to a home's exterior.

Thrill seeking with southern pine
DENEWED interest in wooden
.[Loller coasters is providing plenty ofthrills for southern pine suppliers.
A typical order for a roller coaster normally runs half a million bd. ft., but sometimes orders can be much larger. Last month, Knott's Berry Farm, Buena Park, Ca., unveiled GhostRider, the West's largest "woodie." The 4,533-ft.-long coaster consumed 2.5 million bd. ft. of treated longleaf southern pine-in all, 85 truckloads shipped from Alabama (larger pieces) and North Carolina (shorter pieces).
Wooden coasters usually are bigger and give longer rides than steel ones, which were once more popular. Beginning in the 1980s, the wooden coaster industry underwent a renaissance, said Amusement Business magazine's Tim O'Brien. Coaster fans who had abandoned wood in favor of steel in the '50s, '60s and '70s began to rediscover the wonders of wood.
Traditionalists prefer a wooden to a steel coaster because of wood's inherent flexibility, making each ride slightly different. Riders actually sway with the giant wooden structure. The ride also changes as the temperature rises each day. "People like wood because it gives you a different ride each time," O'Brien explains. "In the morning, when it's cold, it gives you a firmer ride. When the afternoon sun warms the tracks, you get a faster ride."
Coaster aficionados also lean toward wood because, although it can't offer the speed or upsidedown flips of steel, it offers unique sound effects, whose rattle and roll add a psychological dimension to the experience.
Southern pine is the most common choice, mostly due to its strength. "It is the strongest softwood, which is extremely important for a roller coaster. Also important are its workability and its ability to be CCA pressure treatod," says Alan Antonides, senior account mgr. for Universal Forest Products, Hamilton, Oh., which supplied the wood for GhostRider and about 15 other coasters over the last three years.
Universal gets the jobs predominately through word of mouth. Selling coaster projects, explains Antonides,
"requires significant expertise. They require a lot of special sizes-some of which we don't sell for anything elseincluding 3x6s, 4x8s and 6x6s. They need all #l grade, and in incredible quantities."
So, not many companies can fill the bill, says Stan Isom, sales coordinator for Rayonier Wood Products, which has teamed with Hoover Treated Wood Products to supply about a dozen coasters. "We are one of the few companies that has the flexibility of cutting everything from standard 2" dimension and I " boards to a whole range of custom sizes, including 3" and 4" timbers and 514 radius edged decking," he says.
"Roller coaster builders need high volumes of non-standard, treated southern pine lumber, and the quality has to be absolutely top-notch to pass rigid safety requirements," Isom says.
Rayonier's custom mills produce 3x6, 3x8, 4x6, or 4x8 lumber from 8 feet to 20 feet in length.

LONGEST and largest wooden roller coaster in the West opened last month at Knott's Berry Farm, Buena Park, Ca. At 4,533 feet long and up to 1 18 feet high, the GhostRider consumed 2.5 million bd. ft. of CCA treated southern yellow pine, plus 50,000 lbs. of nails and 1 ,000 tons of nuts and bolts. The wood was left unpainted to age and blend in with the classic Old West look and feel ol Knott's famous Ghost Town themed area.

$1.2 Billion Asbestos Deal
Owens Corning agreed to pay $1.2 billion to settle asbestos-related lawsuits, resolving about 90Vo of 176,000 pending cases over the next two years and helping to settle new claims without litigation.
Analysts predict the so-called National Settlement Program, devised completely outside of the court system, may become a prototype for other firms still facing asbestos suits or other future litigation over mass injuries.
The company ceased selling asbestos products in 1972.

Lumber Associafion of California & Nevada named Kelly Purcell, Builders Supply, Palm Springs, Ca., as 1998 President's Award winner during its recent annual convention.
Martyn Temple, Weyerhaeuser Co., Long Beach, Ca., won the Associate of the Year Award.
Western Wood Products Association has appointed Michael McGuigan as its Alaskan regional manager, overseeing its lumber grading services in the state.
Based in Anchorage, he will be responsible for mill inspections, grading training and lumber education activities. Currently seven Alaskan mills are using WWPA's services since they were made available in March.
TJM Adding Research Center
Trus Joist MacMillan has begun first phase construction in Boise, Id., of an $ll million technology center for its engineers and researchers.
About 130 employees now based at various Boise locations will work at the 172,000-sq. ft. facility. The 45,000-sq. ft. first phase will house systems development and engineering support centers, corporate research center and pilot line (equipment for process and product development now based in Vancouver, B.C.).
"The research center will allow our scientists to innovate, create and test new products and get them to market more quickly," says Trus Joist MacMillan public relations manager Dennis Burbank.
Once phase one is completed in March, work will begin on phase two, for completion in December.

Buying Staff Reshutfled
Payless Cashways has reshuffled its merchandising team, eliminating senior positions but creating more positions close to the customer, the vendor and the product.
The number of major areas of accountability in merchandising has
been reduced from nine to six. Shawn J. Hepinstall, v.p.-merchandising, will oversee the new areas, each headed by a divisional merchandise manager: Dan White, commodities-SouthwesU West; Debra Warner, commoditiesMidwest; Dennis Smith, paint/electrical/ lighting; Tim Buerky, tools & hard-

ware; Doug Strubberg, seasonal, and Bill Little, kitchen, bath & plumbing.
Three to five buyers will report to each merchandise manager, with plans to add five to seven assistant buyers.
Robert S. Islinger, his position as senior v.p.-marketing & strategic planning eliminated, is leaving the firm.
The Kansas City, Mo.-based firm operates 159 stores in 19 states, under the names Payless Cashways, Furrow, Lumberjack, Hugh M. Woods, Knox Lumber and Contractor Supply.
Gloseout Unit Reconsidered
Ken Thurman, owner of Thurman's Pay 'n Pak, Wenatchee, Wa., is reconsidering plans to incorporate a Home Center Liquidators outlet into the same building.
Thurman, who also owns Bothell, Wa.-based chain Thurman Industries and Home Center Liquidators stores in Everett and Bellingham, Wa., had planned to open the new store early this year in 10,000 sq. ft. of the blocklong building which housed Pay 'n Pak's hardware department. Hardware was relocated to a more central location as part of a $250,000 remodel that squeezed the 50,000-sq. ft. store into 40,000 sq. ft.
Yet the owner now worries about possible competition between the two stores, and may lease the space to an outside tenant. No matter who moves in, a doorway connecting the two stores is being walled off.
Boise Cascade Restructures
As part of a restructuring anticipated to save the company $70 million next year, Boise Cascade Corp. will sell certain timberlands, close its paper research and development center in Portland, Or., and lay off 400 of its 22,400 employees.
A majority of the jobs eliminated will be in manufacturing and at Boise, Id., headquarters.
Headwaters Deal Stalls
Pacific Lumber Co. abruptly broke off negotiations to sell the Headwaters Forest, claiming that the government's demands could put it out of business.
The proposed $480 million deal for the state and federal governments to acquire approximately 10,000 acres, about half of it old growth redwoods, had been two years in the making.
"It means that negotiations are at a stalemate," said Palco's Mary Bullwinkel. "It doesn't mean that it's all over."

Mixed Dealers Least Profitable
Lumber dealers trying to serve both consumers and contractors were the least profitable of participants in the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association's 1999 Cost of Doing Business Survey.
At the end of 1997, the typical dealer member reported sales of $8,719,600, produced a pre-tax profit of $174,392, and committed$3,027,639 in assets to the business, resulting in a return on assets of 5.87o.
Contractor-oriented dealers, which were by far the largest component of the survey, had the lowest gross margins of any segment, providing a return on assets of 6.6Vo. Consumer-oriented firms had a return of 7 .3Vo.
All sales and margin figures for mixed dealers were in
between the other two groups. However, their operating expenses were relatively high and, as a result, profitability suffered, producing the lowest profit margin and return on assets.
Lattice Creator Making Waves
Bud Griffith, an Aromas, Ca., inventor, got into the lattice business in a unique way by building his own specialty saw. The 16' device sports a bird cage that houses four band saws that cut in different directions to produce wavy patterned slats.
Griffith and his son, Greg, build gazebos, arbors, trellises and room dividers with the lattice slats and market their finished products under their business, Wavy Lattice Co.
When asked about his invention, Griffith replies with a chuckle: "I just dreamed it up. I looked into buying my own machine to cut curves, but the cost was too high. So, I built one of my own instead."
"The inventive part is steering the saw blades," he continues. "We turn the blade instead of turning the wood."
Griffith currently holds two patents, one for the design and look of the lattice, the other for the machine. He hopes to build a second machine sometime in the future that will enable him to sell his products to lumber and hardware stores.
"It took me two years to build this machine," he says. "Until now, curvy boards were unheard of. This machine is the future."
Producers Eye Treaty Loopholes
After successfully defeating pre-drilled studs' exemption, the U.S. Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports is targeting other exceptions to the U.S.-Canada Softwood Lumber agreement, such as notched lumber, rough-faced lumber and alleged misclassification of lumber by province of origin.
On Dec. 16, a judge declared that imports of pre-drilled studs will continue to be included in quotas set under the treaty. The judge also ruled, though, that Customs did not allow 60 days for public comments when on July I it revoked drilled studs' exemption to the treaty. As a result, shipments made before July I and up to 60 days after would not count against mills' quotas.
Canadian officials are considering an appeal, but admitted that time is running out, since the pact expires March 31.2001.

Plastic Lumber Plant In West Trex Co., LLCwill build a 150,000-sq. ft. manufacturing plant in Fernley (near Reno), Nv., to provide composite decking to the West.
Set to open in the fall, the plant initially will operate two production lines, increasing the company's production by 25Vo, according to manufacturing manager Dave Jordan, who heads up the site selection team.
The facility should eventually more than double capacity by expanding to 200,000 sq. ft. and from 50 ro approximately 200 employees.
Based in Winchester, Va., Trex has seen its sales increase from $3.5 million in 1993 to $24.1 million in 1997. Its composite lumber is distributed to
more than 2,000 lumberyards-up from 500 three years ago-by 55 wholesale distributors.
Growth From New Coatings
U.S. coatings demand is forecast to increase 2.5Vo annually to 1.3 billion
gallons worth $17.4 billion in the year 2002, predicts the Freedonia Group.
Traditional low solids, solventbased coatings will continue to be replaced by low- or non-solvent coatings. Reformulation efforts center on reducing VOC emissions and pigments' lead and heavy metal content.

New Metal Roofing Group
The Metal Roofing Alliance, a coalition of manufacturers and related companies, has been formed to promote residential metal roofing and accelerate growth in North America.
The MRA will focus on educating both consumers and contractors on the benefits of metal roofing for residential applications. "We see a tremendous opportunity for growth in residential metal roofing, particularly in the reroof segment, which comprises 75Vo of the roofing market," said executive director Tom Black. "Long a staple in the commercial roofing market, metal roofing's biggest obstacle to date has been the limited awareness of residential products among both homeowners and installers."
Planned are national tv ads, a tollfree answer line for homeowners to request a video, and a dealer kit to assist in marketing and installation.
Based in Belfair, Wa., MRA's 33 members include roofing manufacturers such as Southeastern Metals and McElroy Metals, paint suppliers and coaters such as PPG Industries. and associations including the American Iron & Steel Institute.

Good Mill Hunting
The California Trade and Commerce Agency will help evaluate and redevelop six closed state lumber mills. With a $200,000 grant, the two-year Mill Reuse Pilot Program will locate abandoned or closed mills and assess their level of environmental contamination, if any.
"Many of these sites have long-range potential for marketability and job creation," said CTCA secretary Lee Grissom. He expects the program, modeled after the Oregon Mill Site Conversion project, to be used as a model by other communities.

t's 5:12 p.m. 0n a sunny Friday afternoon. l'larty, I your best customel ju$ called. The shipment of I solid pine mouldings arrived 0n time. However; the contractor and finish guys are complaining it's "tutti-frutti pine," meaning the load is a mishmash of ponderosa, southern yellow, Mexican, ndiata, and something yet to be determined. What can you say?
The response, "Marty, I sent you pine" just doesn't cut it.
Eliminate unpleasant surprises like this by switching to Bright Wood mouldings. lf you need the consistent creamy white of radiata pine mouldings, we will ship you ndiata pine mouldings. The same is true for ponderosa pine, hem-fir; and l'lDt mouldings. Receive only what you order.
Bright Wood's standard order options include mixed trucks of door frames, brickmould, C&BTR, and extension jambs along with bar coded and profile sanded fingerjoint, l,|DF, and/or solid random or cut to lengh (i.e.,7, 8, 10, 12, & 14 feet) mouldings.

Our Customers Think the Dawn of a New Millennium is Something to look Forward to.
Building material dealers using SPRUCE computer systems have nothing to fear when it comes to the Year 2000.
Happily, 920/o of orr customers can still use the original hardware they pwchased ftom SPRUCE when the clock stikes midnight on December 31, 1999.
And because we're not in the midst of the Year 2000 Upgrade Crisis, we can continue to provide the best support in the industry.
How can we be so sure we have the best support? Because we can make these claims:
A We've never lost a single customer.
A We answer and resolve support calls immediately.
A We offer unlimited free training at our corporate headquarters.
A Our support fees are virtually the same today as they were l0 years ago.
Can your software supplier say the same?
If you want a computer company with the foresight to save you money over the long haul-one that will know you by the sound of your voice when you call for support-call SPRUCE today. You'll be happy you did {especially when the year 2000 rolls around}.
What Makes Customers Loyal?
About Sl%o of home improvement store shoppers say they have been loyal to the same store for more than five years, reflecting consolidation in the industry, according to the American Express Retail Index on shopper loyalty.
The top reasons for remaining loyal to a particular store are that it offers a large variety/selection (cited by 8O7o) and convenient location (72Vo). Other desirous features are: a helpful, courteous staff; stocking desired brands/styles; a pleasant, fun environment, and ability to find or special-order hard-to-find items.
Conversely, factors prompting a change in store loyalty include:
o prices tend to be high
o merchandise is often out of stock
o racks/shelves are disorganized
o employees are not helpful
o found a new store closer to home
The study grouped home improvement store shoppers into three categories:
Do-it-yourselfers (representing 36Vo of all home improvement store shoppers and 4lVo of total sales volume) generally seek ways to improve their homes, like to browse, and are handy. Completing home projects gives them a sense of accomplishment.
Informed shoppers (35Vo of all shoppers, 36Vo of sales volume) are in and out of the store quickly, price focused and value oriented, and only shop when they must.
Thrifty/all thumbs shoppers (29Vo of shoppers, 22Vo of sales volume) spend little time shopping, often buy sale items, are price focused and are not handy.

going to pay a service fee everq month then paq again for each software upgrade, then you're not
Flexibility is often an overused buzzword in today's business climate. This is especially true for many of today's computer systems created for companies like yours.
Some computer systems advertise their flexible nature, but fail to mention the time and money required to achieve that flexibility. Many of these systems include expensive charges for each software upgrade. Custom features can cost thousands and take months to program.
