One-To-One Marketing

When canned sales letters personalized with the recipient's name in several places first appeared, people were amazed. Now, using advances in electronics and printing, this technique has grown ever more sophisticated. Today, it's called one-to-one-marketing.

But a problem that plagued earlier attempts still exists, despite all the fancy, high tech gear. What happens is that the marketer overstates his knowledge of the recipient, allowing a mistake to appear that exposes the personalization for what it really is, a try at familiarity that comes across as fake.

Some are mildly amusing. We often get letters addressed "Dear Mr. Merchant Magazine." That doesn't exactly sound like an old buddy dropping us a personal note. Other such mistakes can border on the painful, such as one we recently heard of. The letter read, "George, brighten your mother's eyes this Mother's Day with a gift from (company name mercifully deleted). The follow

up letter said, "George, keep in touch with your mother via long distance this Mother's Day." While those are nice sentiments and we're sure his mother would have appreciated it, what made it awful was that she had died three years ago. So much for personalization and one-to-one in that case.

The First Commandment in this kind of marketing is an obvious one, know your database! While that should go without saying, it is also easier said than done. Our society is fluid and almost compulsively mobile. Keeping any database current is difficult, usually expensive, always challenging, yet something that must be done. Slip-ups of any kind can result in the most costly loss of all, that of your credibility. Once lost, it is hard to regain.

One-to-one marketing is a marvelous concept, despite its obvious and not so obvious hazards. Whatever the medium used, its value can be enormous. Just keep that list current!

Shareholders Decide Willamette's Fate

Willamette Industries' board of directors is urging shareholders to reject rival Weyerhaeuser's $5.3 billion hostile takeover bid.

"Our board's position remains clear and unanimous: Willamette is not for sale," stated president and ceo Duane McDougal l, char acterizing Weyerhaeuser's $48-per-share offer as "nothing more than an opportunistic attempt to acquire one of the industry's leading franchises when stock prices in the industry are depressed."

Willamette shareholders had until Jan. 4 to accept the offer. Most of the stock is held by mutual fund companies, pension plans, company insiders and prominent lumber families. Some hope to preserve Willamette as an independent operation, but others have

Chairman William Swindells is a member of one of Willamette's founding families which control 5.9 million shares-or 5.37o of the company. Other executives and directors hold2.27 million shares, or about2Vo.

As a backup plan, Weyerhaeuser intends to infiltrate Willamette's board. Their four candidates include three retired Weyerhaeuser executives-John Creighton Jr., Thomas Luthy and Robert Lane-plus Evelyn Cruz Sroufe, ex-Visio Corp.

Even if Weyerhaeuser's proxy fight is successful and four directors are replaced, presumably at Willamette's annual shareholders meeting in April, it still may fall short of a majority on the lO-member board.

In early December, HomeBase launched liquidation sales at 3l locations-mostly in Southern California, where three of its five prototype House2Home stores opened. After ll-week sales, 13 of the stores will permanently close and the other l8 will reopen in the spring as House2Homes.

To be converted are North Hollywood, Norwalk, Canoga Park, Glendora, Lancaster, Montclair, Simi Valley, Brea, Irvine, Laguna Niguel, Stanton, Santa Ana, Norco, Oxnard, San Bernardino, Santa Maria, South Bakersfield and Victorville, Ca.

Permanently closing are El Monte, Gardena, Hawaiian Gardens, Los Angeles (Slauson Ave.), Industry, Inglewood, Long Beach, Pomona, El Centro, Bakersfield, Moreno Valley and Riverside, Ca., plus Las Vegas, Nv. Some of the locations to be abandoned have leases that are about to expire; others will be put up for sale.

In other regions, stores will be converted throughout the year in eight phases.

When selecting the manufacturer of windows, doors and skylights for their projects, architects are concerned most about product availability and durability, according to a new National Fenestration Rating Council survey.

Architects were asked to indicate the importance of each of 15 attributes in selecting a fenestration manufacturer, with "very important" assigned a score of5 and "not important" assigned a score of l. Product availabiliry and durability tied for fust with ao average score of 4.5. Choice of styles (4.4), choice of finishes (4.3), and manufacturer reputation (4.3) rounded out the top five.

The study also demonstrated that erergy performance is an important consideration for architects in choosing fenestration products. Regardless of their area of concentration (residential, commercial or industrial), most architects said they "often" or "very often" use on€rgy perforrnance information in selecting products.

Half u*e NFRC ratings to rate €n€rgy performance, and nearly all of those who do find the ratings to be "very trustworthy."

Of the architects surveyed, 887o said they are responsible for choosing the fenestration products in their projects: 8% identified the builder and 37o sud the client.

This compares to 88% of homebuilders who, according to a separate NFRC survey, say that they chooee the products in their homes. American Institute of Architects' Richard Hobbs attributed the discrepancy to the fact that homebuilders often work without architects.

DISING utility costs and declining -lf.housins starts combined with an unsettled neta of manufacturers could translate into a volatile window and door market in 2001.

"There are some major factors that, if combined, may cause a distinct change in the market in 2001," predicts Mark Schield, v.p. of Weather Shield Windows & Doors. "Housing starts are certainly beginning to level off and decline slightly. At the same time, energy prices continue to rise. For some industries, rising fuel costs are causing transportation rates to increase. Those same increases in energy prices can also be felt on the manufacturing end. When you combine the increasing costs in the market with a decline in housing starts, it can result in a volatile situation."

Al Campbell, president of the Window & Door Manufacturers Association, also points to the building slowdown. "Most forecasters are expecting 2001 to be a stabilizing type of year," he says. "Certainly residential construction has slowed down over the last quarter to half year and experts forecast a 4Vo to 67o decline in 2001. There will be a related decline in window and door demand, but it will be softened to a certain extent by the newest products. Windows are thermally superior to what was available 20 years ago, so architects and designers can open up homes. So some of that slack (caused by fewer starts) may be taken up by architects and designers using more windows."

Schield identifies two areas poised to grow. "Affordable housing will be

negatively affected in2001," he says. "The markets with the most promise for growth are luxury homes and light commercial. On the product side, we expect the door category to explode in 2001 along with requests for impact resistant glass and sturdier windows."

The company plans to expand and enhance its current door offerings in 200I. "People are requesting higher ceilings in their homes which means there is a need for higher doors," he says. "Consumer interest in tasteful patio and French doors that open to the rear of homes is also increasing. Doors are now seen as 'furniture for the walls' by many consumers. Homeowners are taking an active role in door selections for their home. We think this trend will increase even more in 2001 as homeowners become more enamored of special door options and energy efficient features."

Schield says the best way for dealers to prepare for success in 2001 is by creating a solid business plan and by strengthening their associations with reputable suppliers. "A number of window manufacturers are currently in financial trouble," says Schield. "Dealers, builders and remodelers all need to be careful not to absorb those problems. They need relationships with firmly established manufacturers that are not going to declare bankruptcy or continually be sold."

Still, the success of the door and window market is intricately tied with overall building demand. Says Campbell: "We're all hoping for the proverbial soft landing for the construction industry."

Asbestos Forces Armstrong Into Chapter 11

Armstrong Holdings' major operating subsidiary, Armstrong World Industries, has filed Chapter l I bankruptcy. hoping a reorganization can help resolve its asbestos liabilities.

Two Armstrong World subsidiaries, Nitram Liquidators and Desseaux Corp., also filed for protec- tion. Yet, Armstrong Holdings, Triangle Pacific Corp. (Bruce Hardwood Flooring, Hartco Flooring and Robbins Hardwood Flooring), ceiling grid joint venture WAVE, Armstrong Canada and its other nonU.S. operating subsidiaries were not included in the filing.

Armstrong said all divisions were operating as usual and suppliers would be paid on normal terms for goods delivered and services provided after the Chapter 1l filing.

Echoing Owens Cornings' recent, reluctant bankruptcy flling (see Nov., p. 22), Armstrong chairman and ceo Michael D. Lockhart said, "Our historical approach to resolving asbestos claims has not worked. The actions that would now be required to wait for legislation-for which there is no reasonable hope for quick passagewould reduce our ability to invest in

our businesses. Armstrong comprises profitable, industry leading businesses. We can no longer allow the asbestos uncertainty to eat away at these businesses. nor can we cutback on investment without damaging them."

With $4 billion in consolidated assets, Armstrong has over 1,000 creditors and $3.3 billion in liabilities, and was a defendant in an estimated 175,000 pending asbestos-related personal injury claims.

To enhance its liquidity, Armstrong said, it obtained a commitment for $400 million debtor-in-possession financing with Chase Manhattan Bank.

Hayward Unit Adds Rail Spur

Hayward Lumber, Santa Maria, Ca., has installed a rail spur for unloading lumber directly at the yard, eliminating the need to truck the material from a nearby rail stop.

Company officials said lumber can be unloaded within a few hours without causing any interruptions for other customers.

The firm plans to enlarge its operation, including building a 50,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility that could be run entirely on solar power.

Studies are currently being conducted to see if the roof can be affixed with solar panels to power the entire operation, according to general manager Randy Harris.

The new plant will make roof and floor trusses, wall panels and prehung doors, he said. and could lead to the hiring of scores of new employees.

He added that the company plans to be more green-minded, including stocking wood from environmentallysensitive mills and promoting use of recycled materials.

Warren Buffett Buys Manville

After canceling its $2.4 billion acquisition by Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst and Bear Stearns, citing lower earnings and inadequate financial conditions, Johns Manville agreed to be acquired by famed investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Berkshire will pay roughly $1.96 billion to buy the firm, or $13 per Manville share, 2l%o more than its current $10.75 stock price. The sale includes $300 million of debt.

According to Buffett, Manville's management team will remain intact and the company will continue to operate out of its Denver, Co., headquarters. "There will be no changes, except on the stock certificates," he said.

The earlier merger (see July, p. 36), which included $700 million in debt, had been slowed by Manville's deteriorating revenues and several industry-related bankruptcies which have cast a pall over the insulation and roofing sectors. The beleaguered junk-bond market was another factor in the demise of the sale, according to analysts.

Berkshire Hathaway also owns 6.5 million shares, or roughly l5vo, of Manville rival USG Corp.

Louisiana-Pacific Corp., Portland, Or., is indefinitely closing two lumber mills to adjust production and permanently shuttering two industrial panel plants to focus on higher-return facilities.

Production at lumber facilities in Jasper, Tx., and Evergreen, Al., will be indefinitely curtailed to better balance production levels with both current and expected customer demand.

L-P attributed permanent closure of its Oroville, Ca., hardboard facility and Clayton, Al., MDF plant ro falling demand for such nroducts and increased competition from more modern tacilities.

Weeks earlier. L-P announced plans to shutter its Bernice, La., lumber mill; New Waverly, Tx., plywood facility, and four cellulose insulation plants operated by US GreenFiber, LLC, L-P's joint venture with Casella Waste Systems, Inc.

U.S. Wood Plant Closing

The Lynwood, Ca., manufacturing plant of U. S. Wood Products is slated to be closed by the end of this month. The 310,000-sq. ft. facility produced sheet goods, drawer sides, cut-to-size and did laminating work, among other operations. Some of the machinery will be auctioned with the balance being transferred to their White City, Or., plant which produces the same general range of products, according to spokesman Tom Ball.

U.S. Wood Products, based in Golden, Co., filed for Chapter I I bankruptcy reorganization July 3 l. While the manufacturing portion of the business is closing, their distribution operations will continue. The company is currently seeking a new, smaller distribution facility in Los Angeles County. It will continue the current product line and will be supplied by the White City plant.

Mishap Kills Oregon Worker

A 6l-year-old employee of Sierra Pine, Springfield, Or., died after two 4'x75' particleboard stacks were accidentally knocked on top of him by a forklift operator.

According to police, Donald Keith Gates was crushed to death Oct. 3l while performing cleanup work at the plant. While charges were not expected to be filed against the driver of the forklift, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration said it would investigate the incident.

Lanoga Acquires Utah's Butterfield

Lanoga Corp., Redmond, Wa., an 18-state, 193-unit chain, has acquired Butterfield Lumber Co., Midvale, Ut., a l9-year-old business.

"We feel that by becoming part of a strong, reputable company such as Lanoga, Butterfield Lumber's employees will receive great benefits, opportunity for advancement and strong buying power in the industry," said co-founder Ed Butterfield.

Butterfield and his brother Jerry plan to retire sometime after the transition, although the firm will continue to operate under the family name and all employees will be offered jobs with the new owner.

Two Northwest Mills Sue Big W

Weyerhaeuser Co. is being sued by two Northwest sawmills that allege the forest products giant is violating federal anti-trust laws.

Smokey Point Hardwoods, Inc. and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon are seeking $30 million in damages and divestiture of the timber and paper giant's seven alder sawmills.

The plaintiffs claim Weyerhaeuser has illegally monopolized the Northwest's alder industry for the past decade, and that its takeover of Willamette Industries, if approved, would give Big W access to most of the remaining suppliers of alder wood.

Weyerhaeuser officials called the suit "a thinly disguised attempt at extortion," and said the company previously rejected a $10 million settlement demand from both mills.

Last month, Willamette's board unanimously recommended that shareholders refuse Weyerhaeuser's $48 per share tender offer, claimins the firm is not for sale and that the price is inadequate.

SHOP TALK

I agree with your editorial on p. 6 of The Merchant Magafine, December edition. The computer folks should use greater clarity to help everyone understand what they have to offer. And, all things considered, people in our low-tech industry have done a remarkable job at keeping up.

But I think there is another point to be made from all of this. In the same way that the high-tech jargon confuses us in the low{ech world, I can attest from 25 or so years in the retail end of the lumber industry, that our own jargon is a bit daunting to the layman. We get busy quoting "four quarter," "face and better," "manufactured shop," "rift cut," and other industry terms, along with initials like OSB, MDF and the like. The pro customers kind of understand. But who can blame our retail customers for beine a bit befuddled by all of this?

With good signage and by standardizing sizes, the big box guys have cut through some of this mystery. The lesson for the rest of us, the independents who are clinging to our part of the lumber market: we must work to relate better to our customers and prospects, not just to our old-timers who roll lumberese off the tongue like their mother language. The less mysterious we can make our products and services, the more we'll see satisfied and returning customers.

Read with interest and some laughter the article in the September issue, "Big Boxes Warn Shoppers."

I wonder if Carol Schumacher advises guests invited to her home to beware they are entering a "danger zone" (p. 38).

Perhaps she has not been properly schooled in the concept of customers actually being "guests," invited to shop in a particular establishment.

By having our doors open for business, that is exactly what we all do, invite people in, and as such, assume the responsibility for their safety. There should be no risks, and if there are, it is that company's responsibility to protect all involved.

I'm sure her statement gives much consolation to the parents of the young girl reportedly killed in Idaho, or the man in Roseville, Ca., who received a concussion.

Her statement must also make the employees of Home Depot feel secure for their well-being.

Home Depot said it expects to have 2,300 stores by 2004, and will expand its home improvement loan program to all U.S. stores to boost sales, particularly for kitchen and bath improvements.

(2) Provide better service to professional contractors by offering daily deliveries, overseen by a staff geared to aid pros.

Name Change For Hickson

Arch Chemicals plans to rename its newly acquired pressure treated wood preservative manufacturer Hickson International, Atlanta, Ga., to Arch Wood Protection, Inc.

The Norwalk, Ct.-based coatings and chemicals firm purchased the company in August.

Arch Wood Protection plants in Georgia, Washington and Indiana supply chemicals for Wolmanized pressure treated wood, Wolmanized Extra water repellent lumber, Wolmanized Natural Select wood, Dricon fire retardant treated wood and Outdoor wood.

A former controller of Ziggy's, Spokane, Wa., has begun serving a 33-month federal prison sentence for embezzling $1.2 million from the six-unit chain.

Despite the jail time, however, the deceit wrought by Guy C.J. Marshall, 45, will continue to haunt Ziegler Lumber for some time. According to court-filed papers, the l2-year employee began bilking his employer in 1994.

Never in his "most extreme imagination" could Vern Ziegler envision such a crime being perpetrated against the business he founded 35 years ago. Investigators said Marshall wrote himself checks on the Ziegler account, using the money to pay his bills, fund a $70,000 wedding reception and buy over $l 10,000 in home electronics.

Though the company bank account was reviewed monthly by the owners, Marshall was careful not to include the embezzled checks in each statement. "He fooled everyone," said Neil Ziegler, v.p. and chief financial officer.

Marshall continued to siphon funds until shortly before his resignation Jan. 11, 1999, say court papers. Family members believe Marshall resigned because a newly installed computerized bookkeeping program would have exposed his crimes. He subsequently confessed to his attorney, who reported the matter to the U.S. Attorney's office.

Vern Ziegler said the actual cost of the embezzlement is roughly $2 million, and has resulted in layoffs and reduced profirsharing bonuses, the latter a 35-year-old tradition in which 20Vo of the firm's annual profits are shared with employees. "The loss of operating funds has obviously put Ziegler Lumber in a more tenuous financial position," he said. "We have been cutting labor expenses for the past two years due to an erosion of our sales volumes."

Upon completing his sentence, Marshall will face a fiveyear probation and restitution of $1,1 19,059.

Big Box Hard Hat Bill Proposed

Legislation has been proposed by two Massachusetts representatives that would require customers and employees to wear hard hats while inside warehouse retailers such as Home Depot, Lowe's and Wal-Mart.

"Sprawlbuster" Al Norman helped craft the bill, which pertains to stores that stock merchandise more than l0 ft. above the ground and operate heavy equipment. "It's all part of telling the story about what these big box retailers are doing," he said. "One of the many ways Wal-Mart holds down prices is to have less need for warehouses because they've chosen to put the warehouse over the head of you, at your risk."

Some store merchandise only can be reached by forklift, which reportedly has led to numerous injuries and deaths nationwide. A Denver lawyer who specializes in cases involving falling merchandise said Depot gets 185 claims a week. The firm said most claims are not injury related.
