Time to do everyrthing-except think

A belated happy New Year to you all. As recent economic signs suggest a turn upwards with increasing strength in a number of leading indicators, let us all look forward positively to a successful 2002.

At this time of year we think about our New Year resolutions (most of which will already be broken by the time you read this). Occasionally, I am asked for my cell phone number. Many are shocked when I will not give it out. Although I carry a cell phone, I decided about three years ago that I did not need my cell phone going off every l0 minutes wherever I happened to be. You see, I had become a digital junkie, an addict. It seems I am not alone. As we sit in a cinema, church, or a restaurant, do we all really need to hear these phones going off non-stop? Have you ever looked around at a traffic signal to see almost every driver talking into a cell phone? It begs the question: do we all really need to be available every minute of the waking day?

Similarly, it became too easy to spend half my time online. The thought of a new message just waiting for me, or discovering buddies I did not know I had, who might want to chat with me, made it compelling to get back online or check my voice mail for the umpteenth time in the day.

At the time, I was getting upwards of 30 voice mails a day and upwards of 80 e-mails a day. Many were surprised to get e-mails from me at 3 a.m., and it didn't matter if I was in the U.S., the U.K. or any of l0 orher ports of call. Colleagues thought it okay to call me at 2 a.m., 5 a.m. or l0 p.m. regardless of the time zone I was in. This was technology in control of my life. No longer a tool, it was con-

sumlng me.

Now I am sure that there are people who live in a state of perfect wireless-ness, who have mobile phones around their necks all day, and can download from the Internet, have Palm Pilots that play music, laptops that play movies, who can track inventory back at the mill. In other words, they can do everything and anything electronically anywhere, anytime. However, many people become out of control with near paranoia if a call is missed.

For me, the reality was that the more calls and e-mails I answered, the less effective I became-and I know that to be true of many others. We are consumed with information overload and too many demands on our time. I found that I was doing instead of managing or, more importantly, creating. My communication skills deteriorated as I answered each in the shortest possible way.

Each of us needs more time to switch off and just plain think. Time needs to be spent efficiently, not frantically answering 50 messages most of which should not have been sent in the first place. I am a great believer in technology as a tool. The difference technology has made to run our businesses is almost incalculable. The ability to work share, tap into Customer Relationship Systems (CRM), respond instantaneously to customer requests, check prices, inventory and shipping times, get quotes, send specifications, as well as hundreds of other uses are what technology was meant to do. So my resolution is to not only find time to think, but to use technology positively not negatively for what it is meant to be: a tool, not a master.

Yinyl windows still see openings for growth

hESPITE a time of national uncerLf tainty, vinyl windows should continue to increase in acceptance and demand throughout 2002. Changes in building and insurance codes, coupled with more usage of windows in new home construction, and the development of new products, will all combine to drive growth in the industry.

energy efficiency features," says Brunett. "Advances in quality window systems mean superior products for home and commercial projects."

The next step in this evolution is preparing the marketplace for products that will meet changing building and insurance codes in different geographic areas. Windows manufacturers such as Simonton are currently developing products to handle wind loads and meet coastal area conditions for specific regions.

cially popular. In addition, color, coating and laminate usage with vinyl windows should increase along with mixtures of composite materials that replicate natural, organic products.

"Certainly our country is facing a difficult time economically as a result of terrorist acts, but we feel replacement vinyl windows will continue to see growth in the coming year," says John Brunett, president of Simonton Windows. "We don't expect that increase to be as rapid as previous years. but we are anticipating some growth."

Brunett believes that new construction vinyl windows will also do well in 2002, despite a predicted flat market and steady, but decreased housing starts. "Several factors bode well for window manufacturers in 2002," he says. "First, there's an ongoing trend toward having larger windows and more mulled units in new home construction. Second, the average home has grown in size and now typically has l8 windows. That figure helps push more products into homes and will help escalate sales."

According to Brunett, the rise in vinyl sales is largely due to increased acceptance of engineered plastic products. "It's taken time, but people now understand that vinyl products offer outstandins low maintenance and

Manufacturers also have high hopes for acoustical windows, which help keep the interior of structures quieter. As more homes are built near airports and flight paths, next to busy highways and in downtown areas, there is more need for products that protect homeowner privacy. "One aspect of privacy is visual...and for that we offer acrylic blocks with obscured viewing capability in our Simonton frames," Brunett says. "Another aspect is sound.

I believe you will see large advances in the coming years in acoustical products that also offer energy efficiency benefits."

In 2002, Brunett believes that geometric styles of windows will follow the theory that "bigger is more beautiful." He envisions Gothic styles becoming espe-

He says, "2002 wiII definitely be an exciting year for our industry. Vinyl will continue to take market share away from aluminum and wood windows, especially in pocket areas of the southern U.S., in Texas and in California. And we're finding that all audiences-homeowners, architects, builders and remodelers-are more accepting of vinyl products and gaining more knowledge about their benefits.

"Combined, this means that even in a difficult economic year for our country, we still believe vinyl windows will experience continued growth in both the new construction and replacement arenas."

For lumber and building products companies, operating a Web site finally has become the rule rather than the exception. More important, firms are devising profitable ways to integrate them into their businesses.

This year's Internet Directory features more than 800 entries, and has been updated with dozens of additions, deletions and revised addresses.

In the list, advertisers appear in bold. With new sites launched almost daily, a complete list would be impossible. To ensure you are listed in next year's directory, please notify us if you have a new site or your site was omitted. And, of course, please visit our site at www.building-products.com.

CHETIONITE

In lhe Harsh Marine tnuitonmenl 0lfers The Best ProteGtion

I

In coastal areas where marine-boring organisms like Teredo, Pholad, and Limnoria tripunctata are present, there's an important need to protect below-water pilings. CHEMONITE/ ACZA provides the best possible protection for above-water and b€low-water structures everl"where , from freezing seas to tropical waters.

That's

Better Docks, Better Boating

Some of the most beautiful dock facilities in the state of Oregon are planned and developed by the Oregon State Marine Board. This unique state agency is dedicated to making Oregon boating as enjoyable as possible for tourists and residents alike. One of the reasons the facilities are as attractive as they are, is that the Board is an enthusiastic user of kiln-dried, CHEMONITE/ ACZA-treated Douglas fir. According to Ron Rhodehamel, Chief Facilities Engineer, the Marine Board at first dabbled with CCA-treated Douglas fir in its standard float module design, but the treatment didn't consistently meet the specified O.6 retention.

So, since 1988, the Board has used AWPAcertified, CHEMONITE/ ACZA-treated Douglas fir in hundreds of float designs. Rhodehamel says these floats have performed beautifully in Oregon's grueling river conditions. He adds that kiln drying has made a big difference in the appearance of their CHEMONITE/ACZAtreated wood in the last couple years.

Treated For Tomorrow's Boaters

The first Chemonite-treated floats, built in 1988, still show no signs of deterioration. Rhodehamel is confident that the hundreds of CHEMONITE/ ACZA-treated floats across Oregon will last for decades.

Southern pine slips into down cycle

f IKE so many other industries. the I-lbusiness climate for producers of southern pine lumber remains most challenging. Just two years ago, during 1999, our industry established an all-time production record of 16.92 billion bd. ft., encouraged by falling mortgage rates. Eventually, lumber inventories exceeded demand in the closing quarter of 2000, as hints of a cyclical downturn in markets became a reality. Total production for 2000 remained a robust 16.67 billion bd. ft.

A relatively healthy housing market through the opening quarters of 2001 is what many observers believe kept our nation's economy from falling into a recession. True, housing was strong as interest rates fell further. but lumber producers were squeezed to make a profit considering their high fixed costs. Throughout 2001, a good week in the lumber business was a rare

Even a steady repair and remodeling market cannot replace the volume of lumber utilized in new housing starts. event, at best, aggravated by weak markets, transportation and labor shortages. The downward production trends continued through last summer; SFPA estimates total 2001 southern pine production to be 15.6 billion bd. ft., or a decline of 6.77o.

The economic slowdown has now officially become a recession. The events of Sept. I I are quite likely to have out the economic nail in the lum-

ber industry's coffin. However brief this recession's duration, the lumber industry may be one of the last sectors to recover. Quite simply, supply still exceeds demand for lumber at this time. In light of rising unemployment and declining consumer confidence, potential home buyers may delay purchasing new homes, despite the lowest mortgage rates in decades. Even a steady repair and remodeling market cannot replace the volume of lumber utilized in new housing starts, a figure that continues to drop monthly.

SFPA member companies produce half of the nation's southern pine lumber, and their outlook for 2002 is, at best, guarded. Most companies have curtailed operations and many mills have been shut down. If the poor economic climate persists, permanent closures are a distinct possibility.

A number of factors will influence business in 2002. Softwood imports from Canada continue to impact southern pine's traditional framing markets. The industry's Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports was successful in obtaining a 12.37o countervailing duty while negotiations continue for a longterTn agreement.

Another hurdle for southern pine producers is increased imports from overseas producers. Competing softwood species from Europe and South American continue to adversely impact our domestic market. A strong dollar and foreign competitors have also hampered southern pine exports throughout 2001. Southern pine was once gaining modest market share in Spain, but that is now being challenged by increased imports of African and European species. Kilndried southern pine is now recognized in the materials handline markets as

the logical choice to meet new phytosanitary requirements for shipments to the European Union. SFPA's efforts have explained the new regulations to pallet and crate manufacturers nationwide.

Treated lumber markets are likewise in a state of flux, but for a variety of different reasons. The EPA is expected to release its updated risk assessment for CCA-treated wood products early in 2002. A favorable determination from the EPA will aid the treating industry's campaign to refute negative consumer publicity and ongoing efforts to ban treated wood.

SFPA is actively participating in the newly formed Treated Wood Council (TWC) to counter environmental misinformation and to educate audiences about the merits of treated products, emphasizing their proven service track record of more than 75 years. TWC has provided the EPA's Scientific Advisory Panel with scientific studies supporting the safe use of CCA-treated products. The treating industry has cooperated with EPA to successfully launch an expanded consumer safety awareness program now highly visible at lumber retail outlets.

SFPA estimates treated lumber production to total 5.9 billion bd. ft. in 2001, dropping to 5.25 billion bd. ft. in 2002. Hopefully, the optimistic forecasters will be correct and a recovery will be underway during the second half of 2002.

New Paint Program Makes A Splash

Ace Hardware Corp. has unveiled a dramatic new look for its stores' paint departments. Named "Color Your Life," it consists of a new decor package and layout, plus increased training for store associates.

The center of the new layout consists of an attractive paint counter with woodgrain on the front and a stainless steel top with a complementary back counter. The area also includes wood floorins that follows the curve of the

paint counter and sets the working area apart from the rest of the department. ln addition, hanging fixtures illuminate the paint counter.

Other decor elements include special track lighting that highlights overhead signage and informational signs that run on either side of the main paint aisle, helping answer customers' questions.

Reduced lmpact Logging Analyzed

Sustainable forest management through Reduced Impact Logging will be a focus of the International Wood Products Association's upcoming 46th annual convention, World of Wood2002.

During the convention April l7-19 in Indian Wells (Palm Springs), Ca., Art Klassen, Southeast Asia project manager, Tropical Forest Foundation, will present "Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) Goes Global."

According to TFF, RIL's cost in tropical forests ts l2o/o less than the conventional logging method, and land disturbed by RIL is nearly half. "For the past several years the Tropical Forest Foundation has conducted training seminars in the Brazilian Amazon teaching RIL practices. Without question, these practices are ecologically and environmentally friendly," said TFF executive director Keister Evans. "Damage to the forest is minimized while timber harvest yields are usually increased."

The Indonesia program began in January 2000. It builds on the expertise and methods developed in the Brazil program, but will evolve in the context of the many Indonesian industry, research, and policy organizations already grappling with sustainable forestry issues.

PWP Buys Oregon Treater

Pacific Wood Preserving Cos., Bakersfield, Ca., has acquired the Sheridan, Or., treating plant of Taylor Lumber & Treating.

The facility should be operational by March l, after it is converted from a utility pole treating operation to one that specializes in environmentally treated poles, lumber and timbers.

"This acquisition will give us more treating capacity in the Western U.S. than any other wood preserver," said president Dick Jackson.

Jackson also added that the Sheridan facility is located near several sawmills that produce and ship into large housing markets-providing the company with excellent freight advantages.

When the plant is fully operational, it will employ between 25-40 people.

Taylor Lumber & Treating had been looking for a buyer since declaring Chapter I I bankruptcy this past summer.

PWP also operates treating plants in Bakersfield, Eloy, Az., and Silver Springs, Nv.

Weyerhaeuser Ups Bid As Willamette Pursues G-P

Willamette Industries has agreed to finally meet with hostile suitor Weyerhaeuser Co. to discuss its revised $6.05 billion takeover offer.

Weyerhaeuser upped its bid by IOVo three days after Willamette revealed that it had begun negotiations to possibly acquire Georgia-Pacific's building products division. Acquisition of the unit, with $7.9 billion in sales last year, 687o more than Willamette, would invalidate Weyerhaeuser's bid.

Stephen Rogel, Weyerhaeuser president and chief executive, called the sweetened $55 per share, all-cash bid his company's "best and final offer."

Willamette's board will reconvene the first week of January to review its alternatives and, in the meantime, urged shareholders not to tender any

Palco Closes Historic Mill A

A century of milling in Scotia, Ca., ended last month as Pacific Lumber Co. closed its remaining redwood plant in town.

Mill A, whose production will shift to more modern mills in Fortuna and Carlotta, Ca., had employed 140 workers.

The action comes on the heels of the closure of Mill B in Scotia this past May, which had processed old growth logs for over 100 years.

"We are being strangled by operating costs," stated president Robert Manne, noting that the company has lost $600 million over the last three years-including an estimated $85 million in 2001.

Manne emphasized that the 1999 Headwaters Agreement (see Dec., p. 31) has resulted in an array of state and federal oversight actions, rendering 627o of its timberlands unavailable for logging.

"Put simply, we are not getting enough logs to continue operations as in the past," said v.p.-production Dennis Wood. "The result has been that many of our customers can't get the products they want."

The closure of both mills also had a direct impact on Scotia itself, which is one of the West's last company owned towns. Laid-off workers were given six months to vacate company-owned housing.

Palco will continue to operate its Scotia remanufacturing plant, which employs 200. The company headquarters will also remain in town.

shares until it issued its recommendation. In October, Willamette said it would negotiate only if Weyerhaeuser submitted a bid closer to $60 a share.

"On October 10, we publicly invir ed (Weyerhaeuser) to sit down with our investment bankers in order to get the information they needed to revise their inadequate $50 offer," said Willamette president and c.e.o. Duane McDougall. "They publicly slammed the door shut on that overture in less than two hours without so much as a phone call, and we made it clear that we intended to pursue our strategic

plan. That's what we are doing."

G-P's building products unit includes a network of distribution centers and produces lumber, structural panels, industrial wood products, gypsum and chemicals. The sale would help G-P concentrate on its consumer products and reduce debt, primarily a result of its $l I billion acquisition of Fort James Corp. a year earlier.

Chairman and c.e.o. A.D. "Pete" Correll said G-P had been evaluating several strategic options, including a plan for a possible separation of the company into two entities, when it was approached by Willamette.

Potlatch Harvesting Poplar

Potlatch Corp., Spokane, Wa., recently began harvesting timber from plantations it transformed from pulp to poplar in the mid- 1990s.

Potlatch's 17,000-acre hybrid poplar plantation in eastern Oregon was until 1994, a pulp operation that grew only fast-growing hardwood species.

As a result of a sharp downturn in the pulp market nearly l0 years ago, Potlatch made the decision to change over to saw timber-a risky move for a traditional softwood producer.

Industry analysts have noted that introducing a new species into the solid wood market is never easy. Hybrid poplar is most often used in furniture building. cabinetry. veneer and other non-structural applications.

Moore says he expects the timber to be straight, clear and limb-free up to 22 ft. "We're looking at an annual cut of 41 million bd. ft. bv 2005." he added.

WWPA AnnualMeeting To Allow Retailers

To boost attendance, the Western Wood Products Association is inviting lumber retailers to its annual meeting, as well as adding business sessions and social events, including a golf tournament.

Now dubbed "Viewpoint 2002," the meeting March 9-12 at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, San Diego, Ca., offers opportunities to network with lumber sales and production professionals, hear perspectives on the top issues facing the industry and develop new business.

"Relationships are an important part of the lumber business. The Viewpoint meeting is a unique venue where the major lumber producers in the West are in one place, ready to talk business with those companies handling their products," said WWPA president Michael O'Halloran.

In addition to the West's top manufacturers, the meeting also draws lumber producers from the South and Canada, wholesalers from across the country and transportation companies.

Widening the admission policy seems a reaction to competing events. such as the NAWLA Traders Market, that "actively restrict attendance by

The program features presentations on European and South American lumber, California construction markets, and the impact of changing power markets on lumber manufacturers. Keynote speaker is Mark Rey, undersecretary of natural resources and environment. who oversees the U.S. Forest Service, speaking on American forest policies.

Forest Service Claims New Direction

The Bush Administration's review of these policies has brought criticisms from environmentalists, who fear a trampling of protected lands, but Bosworth insists that Clinton's initiatives simply didn't work. "Those (Clinton policies) got all intertwined, and our folks in the field had an awful time trying to understand what it is we really wanted," said Bosworth.

Treatment Penetrates Spruce, Fir

A Swedish firm claims that they have become the world's first company to offer a commercially viable technology that impregnates coniferous wood other than pine.

Lign Multiwood says its technology uses environmentally friendly agents and is able to penetrate to the core of such woods as spruce and Douglas fir.

"The global construction industry has been waiting for impregnated construction timber from conifers other than pine," said Lign's Curt Lindhe.

He added that this new technology is the first to allow timber to regain its original dimensions after impregnation.

Depot Looks Three Years Ahead

As Home Depot closed the year with sales approaching $53 billion, the company announced plans to open 200 stores a year for the next three years.

Depot also plans to add more square footage to approximately 184 warehouses throughout 2002, while constructing 10 new Expo Design Centers.

The future will also include four new Home Depot Pro stores, the first which is scheduled to open February in Mesquite, Tx.

Additionally, the company will unveil its new Home Depot Urban stores in Chicago and New York City, which feature a smaller size format aimed at the convenience customer.

Not all the news is optimistic however, as Home Depot recently sold off its unprofitable stores in Brazil and Argentina, while also scrapping its four prototype Villager's Hardware stores, which focused on the convenience hardware market. The shuttered New Jersey hardware stores will reopen as Urban format stores.

On the retail floor level, Depot has completed a plan to have more workers free for customer service during peak hours, with product stocking to be done during slower periods.

Additionally, company officials said there will be a greater emphasis on tool rentals, with rental programs put into 608 stores by the end of 2002 and in 1,300 stores at the conclusion of2OO4.

Home Depot also plans to focus on the smaller professional customer with its pro initiative program, to be in 966 stores by the end of 2002.

For larger commercial/industrial customers, Depot plans to introduce its HD Supply in 2002 as well as test its Home Depot Pro format, which offers product assortments and

services similar to wholesale supply houses.

HD Supply, in turn, will utilize company account managers and the outside sales staff of Depot's Maintenance Warehouse, Apex Supply and other related businesses.

Retailer To Offer Home Services

Home Depot has partnered with ServiceMaster Co. to offer residential maintenance services in a co-branded test market program starting early this year.

Approximately 30 Home Depots will begin offering home services such as landscaping and lawn care, drain cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning and home warranties, among others.

Utah Sawmill Faces Closure

With the U.S. economy officially in recession and a string of prominent mill closures in the West, at least one Utah sawmill fears it won't make it past February.

Utah Forest Products, Escalante, Ut., had been a symbol of ingenuity and doggedness when it reopened an old mill in the early '90s after a two

year closure.

Mgr. Stephen Steed had become something of a hero to many in the town as he opened a new mill made primarily from the salvaged parts of shuttered mills all over the West.

Steed also proved flexible in the face of an ever changing market-turning out everything from log home materials, wooden shakes, home-

building boards and even pet litter shavings.

But since a sharp downturn in the U.S lumber industry began in mid1999, Steed has been unable to get the company on safe ground.

"We are a victim of the economy," Steed said, remarking that in September he was down to only one shift at the mill. "It was bad. Then since Sept. 1 I, (the economy) yanked the rug from under us and we have not been able to recoup."

Steed noted that there simply haven't been enough logs, speculating that his own supply won't last past February.

ln many ways, the mill's situation is a microcosm of lumber shortages experienced in the state and the West as a whole. In 2000, Utah loggers cut 5l million bd. ft. worth $17 million. That was in sharp contrast to an output of 67 million bd. ft. valued at $25 million dollars in 1999.

In the last 12 years, the West has lost a total of 350 mills.

Preparing for the worst, Steed has been looking for potential buyers as well as an auction house to arrange the sale of mill parts.

hope is the possible federal sale of timber in Utah's Kaibab National Forest. It is expected a sale of that magnitude would keep the mill operating for another year.

Yet Steed is less optimistic. "The bottom line is, we can't go any further anymore."

Certification Surges In Canada

In four months, third party certification of Canada's forest management practices have increased 447o to 179 million acres of certified forests-the largest area of certified forest of any country in the world.

The total represents nearly 437o of Canada's annual harvest and over 60Vo of its managed forest lands.

A recent Forest Products Association of Canada survey revealed that Canadian companies remain committed to certification, projecting that the level of certified forestland will jump to another 5O7oby 2005.

German Mills Keep Exporting Kullik & Rullmann German

Timber Export Co., an alliance of nine European mills, now has sales offices in Pittsburgh, Pa., as well as in

Japan and China.

Currently Kullik & Rullmann is shipping 70 containers a month of solid products and glulam beams to the U.S.

The group recently developed a new online production planning system that links the mills, allowing capacity and inventory figures to be accessed.

The exporting company has also implemented a new container loading and trucking system, as well as a claim management system.

New Owner Reopens Treater

Jasper Wood Products, which formerly operated as Cascade Pacific Industries, has reopened its treating facility in Jasper, Or., under new ownership.

Sales manager Mike Boone said Jasper will be treating the same products as before, adding that, "We'll specialize in the West Coast fire retardant market for both commercial and military uses."

The plant is licensed by Hoover Treated Wood Products and treats Hoover Pyro-Guard interior fire retardant and Hoover Exterior Fire-X II

"We just need lumber prices to go up and business to get better-other than that, things are great."

He also noted that they were restarting the CCA treating side of the business.

Boone emphasized that the biggest change for Jasper is that "the treating plant is now the core of our business."

Builders Speak Out On SYP

Researchers at Louisiana State University recently surveyed 500 of the top U.S. home builders on their perceptions of southern yellow pine.

About 637o of builders stated that the species of wood used in building is important. Eighty-five percent went

on to say that they would be selective about the species of wood they would use in building a new house.

In regards to species choice,637c f'elt that spruce-pine-fir is a close substitute for SYP, followed by steel and then concrete.

The LSU study found that 527c of builders had a "positive perception" of southern yellow pine, although 497o felt the quality of SYP had declined (citing warping in service and a perception that SYP is grown and kiln dried too rapidly).

A clear majority (83olo) said they would be willing to build with southern oine.
