Along with the well-documented trend of companies consolidating into fewer entities, has come a parallel, though less noticed trend. Companies that once sold a single species or dealt in only a handful of products have now expanded their inventories to include a wide range of goods and products, some of which would once have been considered heresy.

Redwood and cedar are good examples. In the past, specialty distributors handled either one or the other. Then some began to handle both. Then high-end Douglas fir items were added. Today, we see far fewer such specialists. Indeed, given the current shortages of redwood, wholesalers and distributors that once disdained competing products have now enthusiastically embraced all manner of products.

Softwood people now sell hardwood. Formerly pure wood sellers now peddle composite items made of wood fiber and lord knows what else. Many sell building products that are not forest products at all. Rather they are made of steel, rubber, plastic, aluminum, you name it.

Sales people who once emphatically stressed the superiority of redwood, for example, now carefully point out the features and benefits of competing products that they just happen now to have in inventory. Their committed customers of the past listen and try the new offerings. If the performance of the new products is there, customers usually make the leap of faith and accept what they formerly didn't want. Sometimes you hear, "Well, I really wanted (you fill in the blank), but if you simply can't procure it, I guess this will have to do." This kind of remark can often be followed by a dissertation on how the world is going to hell. But the bottom line is they buy the product.

The smartest of the distributors and wholesalers realized years ago that certain familiar products wouldn't always be available in adequate quantities and that the move into additional inventory items was inevitable.

They made the move, brought the customers along and are better off today for having done so.

I\TAGGED by insufficient supplies I \ of redwood, especially in the upper grades, distributors known as dependable sources of the species have had to scramble for substitutes.

"We sell less of the upper grades of old growth redwood," admits John Orlowski, Ahl Forest Products, Ukiah, Ca. "We're substituting second growth farm grades and other

edly a higher end product than typical plastic lumber.

For months, redwood suppliers have been promising the supply will loosen. Wholesalers aren't so sure.

"I think redwood is becoming a specialty item and is sustainable (as such)," Orlowski says. "When a product doubles in price in five years, it moves up in who can buy it. If someone's building a home in Lake Tahoe and wants clear heart, vertical grain siding, it's still available."

after cedar markets, fingerjoint items."

"We began turning to sawn alternatives a few years ago, first with Trex, then TimberTech, and now we're selling a lot of vinyl products," says Mike Cook, C.J. Redwood, Escondido, Ca. "We sell a little western red cedar, but the vast majority continues to be redwood. We're fortunate in that we have very close relationships with mills up north."

species such as imports and domestic cedar and even whitewoods for some siding."

Lee Roy Jordan Redwood Lumber Co., Dallas, Tx., has been expanding into a wide variety of alternatives, and the redwood shortage is "exactly the reason," says David Jordan. "Redwood's still our bread and butter, and in expanding we've tried to stay with specialty items."

The company is now selling A&Better western red cedar "because it's comparable to the upper grades of redwood," Jordan says. "We sell it to people who want a better cedar, and, if we can't get lx12 Clear Heart redwood, we can switch (those customers) right over."

A few years ago, before any redwood shortage. Jordan began carrying Pau Lope hardwood decking, and found it an ideal substitute for 2x4 or 2x6 redwood. More recent additions include #2 &Better appearance grade western red cedar, cedar timbers, Pacific Coast cypress/Alaskan yellow cedar (provided by Jordan's Pacific Northwest cedar suppliers), and StranDek composite decking, report-

Jordan predicts: "The problems should get a little better in the knotty products and sap grades, not necessarily on uppers and clears. Supply of Clear Heart and Vertical Grain will only tighter. There are plenty of trees, more than there have ever been, but the size of the tree they're cutting is smaller. So the product mix has changed. Redwood is now going

Consequently, fewer distributors are offering redwood. "I don't expect the situation to improve for Clear Heart redwood or even Heart B." Jordan says. "A lot of mills have trimmed their customer lists down to those who are trying to sell the whole log. The guys in the Northeast who want nothing but the cream of the crop were first to be cut off."

"l don't expect the situation to improve for Clear Heart redwood or even Heart B."
LARGE QUANTITIES of redwood are harder to come by these days, though top grades are still available-for a orice.

Shlngles vs. Shalces

nO YOU know the difference I-lbetween a shinsle and a shake? Although the producis may be similar in appearance and application-mostly as roofing, there are very real differences.

Shakes are made from wood, usually cedar, often with at least one natural grain textured split surface. Shingles, thinner than shakes, may be produced from various materials including wood (again, usually western red cedar). Thev feature sawn

smooth sawn on both faces for a neat, tailored appearance. It is cut in a choice of three lengths:

Flat grain can easily be detected by the grain designs on the face of the shingle. Limited knots and defects are allowed above the clear portion.

On a 4ll2 or steeper pitched roof', #2 shingles are applied at 4" for 16"; 4-112" for l8'; and 6-l/2" for 24".

Shingles, thinner than shakes, may be produced from various materials including wood, giving the shake a highly textured surface on the exposed face. Also known as a heavy resaw, it is thicker and heavier than any other shake, giving the roof a very rugged or rustic appearance. It is cut from clear heartwood. with no defects.

The shake is 3/4" thick at the butt and cut in two lengths-I8" and 24". On a 4l12 or steeper pitched roof, it is applied at1 ll2" for an 18" shake and 10" for a 24" shake.

Number I Straightsplit Shake (Blue Labels)

This shake is also called a barn shake and known years ago as a ranch shake. It is produced mainly by machine but can also be split with a

cut as thick or as heavy as the heavy split and resawn shake. Also known as a medium resaw, it provides the roof with a very textured appearance.

The medium split & resawn shake is cut from clear heartwood. with no defects. This shake is ll2" thick at the butt and is cut in 18" and 24" lengths. On a 4/I2 or steeper pitched roof, it is applied atl-Il2" for an 18" shake and 10" for a24" shake.

Number I Tapersplit Shake (Blue Labels)

The tapersplit shake is produced by reversing the block, end for end, with each split. Selected parts of the tree are required for this naturally split shake, which is largely produced by hand with a mallet and splitting tool called a froe.

A tapersplit roof will give a less rustic, rippled shadow line. It is cut from clear heartwood, 100Vo edge grain, and with no defects. The tapersplit shake is cut l/2" thick and 24" in

mallet and froe, in the same manner as the tapersplit shake. The difference is that the straightsplit is split from the same end of the block, producing a uniform thickness throughout.

The straightsplit creates a rippled shadow line on the roof. It is cut from clear heartwood and is 1007o edgegrain, with no defects. The shake is 3/8" to 1/2" thick and is cut in 18" and 24" lengths. No felt is required with a 3-ply system in snow free areas.

Other types include fancy-butt shingles (decorative shingles for exterior and interior use) and, for sidewall applications, rebutted & rejointed sidewall shingles and shakes, and grooved rebutted & rejointed shingles and shakes.

Both shakes and shingles are packed in bundles and, depending on the type, four or five bundles are packed to make a square. One square covers 100 square feet.

Redwood promotions in high gear

THE DEMAND for redwood has I never been sreater.

The species las been a traditional favorite because of its built-in good looks, rot-resistance and dimensional stability. Builders and do-it-yourselfers like to work with redwood because it is easy to saw and handle. Unlike chemically treated products, it needs no special protective or dispos-

al procedures. And, despite the proliferation of synthetic, man-made building materials, redwood has a straightforward, organic appeal.

To support this well-established preference, the California Redwood Association has a new marketing program for the year 2000. It is a combination of advertising, publicity and sales aids.

CRA works with consumer, specifier and merchant magazines to place stories and photographs that create demand for redwood products and projects. They have productive relationships with newpaper, radio, TV, Web site and how-to book editors and producers.

The publicity highlight is the national deck contest sponsored by CRA and Today's H ome owne r magazine (circulation 950,000). This on-going event will be announced in the magazine's April issue, then a multi-page feature showing the 1999 winners will appear in the May issue. This, combined with the announcement of the 2000 contest, will give people design ideas and motivate them to get started on deck projects they have been putting off. The contest also encourages them to use redwood so they can enter the contest.

CRA will award a $3,000 first prize, $2,000 second prize, and $1,000 third prize. The deadline for entries will be July 31. 2000. and the winners will be published by Today's Homeowner in a 2001 issue.

CRA will support the magazine's promotion by creating point-of-purchase banners and countertop entry blank containers. These will be available free to merchants from CRA

member mills and will fuel the deck building excitement created by the contest. Merchants can also tie into the contest by sponsoring local competitions and encouraging their pro customers to enter.

Inexpensive project

plans make great point-ofpurchase giveaways.

CRA will mail contest entry blanks to selected lists of building professionals and do back-up publicity in newspapers and in building, design and lumber trade magazines.

Another success story has been CRA's Web site at www.calredwood.org. The site receives an average of 500 visitors a day who usually look at about five pages. It is popular with lumber merchants, design and building professionals and consumers. Constantly evolving, current site attractions include a redwood dealer locator, CRA literature that can be downloaded, do-it-yourself plans with 3-D visuals, and two videos that can be viewed online.

To supplement the redwood publicity, Web site and advertising, CRA has an extensive library of literature and merchant sales aids that are regularly revised and improved. In 2000, they plan to add to their on-going series of project plans.

These inexpensive plans are popular with do-it-yourselfers and make great point-of-purchase giveaways. In production are design sheets for planters, a garden work center, and spa surrounds and accessories.

CRA can help merchants create a customized redwood sales program and has photographs, literature and videos available on request.

XORBITANT promotion costs of I/international marketing have curtailed export business plans for many small businesses.

The Internet, however, can help businesses of any size perform low cost, online research into possibilities of selling products abroad. Good trading sites and search engines can lead you to prospective buyers, as well as provide you with details of the companies.

Utilize excellent search engines such as Infoseek, Alta Vista or Web Crawler. Try inputting a combination of words which would lead to information on potential buyers of your products. For example, if you are looking at a specific market such as the Middle East for your building products, then try a combination of words such as "UAE," "Dubai," "building materials," "construction," "trading," etc., and you will get several Web pages of companies, trade bodies, private consultants, and even trading sites connected with your product and target country.

A search might uncover such wonderful sites as www.con-all.com (dedicated to the construction materials business in the Middle East) or www.arabnet.com (focusing on busi-

Good trading sites and

search engines can lead you to prospective buyers. nesses in the Arab world). A similar search targeting Africa might lead you to www.mbendi.com, which features an extensive trading facility for corresponding with thousands of African companies.

General trading sites offering leads on a wide range of products and commodities far outnumber "businessspecific" sites that focus on a particular commodity or a product. There is, however, a tendency among businesses in developed countries to use portals promoted by associations relevant to their trade. Yet, for export, import and third country trading, several "all products" trading sites are at times far more useful than specialized trade sites.

Among the better multi-product trading sites are www.alibaba.com, where thousands of new trade leads

get registered daily. There are several product categories, covering almost the entire range of products and services traded globally, and by the second click you can reach your desired product category. Also featured are a search facility incorporating a key word search, a trade lead search, and an "alert" facility, notifying inquiries of your interest by e-mail.

A high number of offers to buy in a wide range of product categories are also registered daily on www.worldbid.com. The site includes a superb "alerl" facility.

You will find a large listing of trade inquiries on www.ec2l.com, which additionally has a great search mechanism. Www.eckorea.net has similar features, plus an excellent trade classification system and a systematic leads posting and retrieval system.

Among the dozens of other great sites are www.swissinfo.com, www.allproducts.com, www.tradezone.com, www.netsource-asia.com and www.digilead.com. One can really exploit the advantages of such sites by posting and updating buy and sell offers, regularly utilizing the search and alert facilities, and posting trade leads under all possible business

opportunltles.

Product- or business-specific sites can similarly be located via a search engine by entering words or phrases such as "tiles," "flooring," "stone," or any other building product, along with a combination of words such as "buy," "sell," "trading," "export," "import," "offers to buy," "offers to sell," etc. Typical results would include www.floorbiz.com, www. ceramic-tile.com, www.constructiononline.com, www.buildonline. com, and www.consource.com.

If the results are too voluminous, narrow down your search to sites pertaining to businesses in specific countries and specific products in the countries of your choice.

In fact. when you register your trade inquiries with some trading sites, often you receive mailers from other trading sites, providing a plethora of opportunities for doing business through the Net.

And as the trading community increasingly embraces such sites, the product listings are certain to grow even longer.

Switching to engineered wood beams

II/HY DOES demand for glulams

V Y and other ensineered wood beams continue to inirease? Reports from dealers and builders reveal some surprising new reasons.

Competitive in-place costs, predictable design values, quieter floors, and f-ewer call backs are some of the factors that are driving the "bull market" in engineered wood beams. But there are other reasons as well.

Some manufacturers now wrap their engineered beams to protect them from the elements and maintain low moisture content during shipment. Anthony Forest Products surface seals each of their laminated Power Beams and wraps them individually or in bundles with heavy plastic kraft paper. This protects the beams from rain and from "diesel dust" picked up during train or truck transportatron.

Many retail dealers say they wish that all framing materials were similarly wrapped. They report that high moisture content in unprotected units of dimension lumber often result in call-backs when the wood twists and warps after it reaches the job site.

Another reason specifiers prefer engineered beams is that builders are devoting more time to management

Many dealers say they wish that allframing materials were similarly wrapped,

and planning, rather than hands-on direction ofevery detail at thejob site.

In fact, the increased usage of glulams has created more predictable building systems that don't require as much on-site direction as conventional stick-built methods. Many builders who used to spend all day supervising construction can now delegate much of the work to framing crews.

In the past, builders who contracted with framing contractors often had to persuade the framers to convert from stick-built building methods to construction with engineered wood. Now, framers can use CAD design systems to speed construction with engineered wood. One of Northern California's largest builders is thankful its framing crews switched on their own from solid sawn to engineered beams.

Citation Homes, Santa Clara, Ca., will build more than 700 houses this year, primarily in the Santa Clara and San Jose area. Most of the homes are around 2,500 sq. ft., with a price tag in the upper $300,000s.

"(Subcontractor) Union Framing changed to Power Beams when local building codes downgraded the allowable bending stress for solid sawn lumber," says Pong Ng, Citation's director of architecture & engineering. "They help anchor the shear walls on the second floor, have higher nail withdrawal capacity, and carry the additional load of extra long roof hips."

Unlike most stock glulams, the beams used by Union have zero camber, eliminating the need to shim around windows when they are used as headers. "We glue and screw all of our floor sheathing to the beams and Ijoists to ensure quiet, flush floors," Ng says. "We were pleased when Union Framine bid our labor and materials

package with the engineered wood system because it offers lower in-place cost, less twist and shrinkage, and faster construction with one-piece headers, in comparison to laminating pieces of LVL headers together at the job site."

He says the combination of noncamber and I-joist depths produces flat, solid floors. Citation uses wood trusses for roof systems. They don't use steel framing, "because we don't want to bring in tools and materials that are unfamiliar to our crews and drive up costs." Ng says.

Union Framing orders the beams from Bay Area retailer Idaho Pacific Lumber, which is supplied by distributor North Pacific Group.

The product also has gained approval from structural engineering firms. Paul Means, Santos & Umrtia Engineers, San Francisco, likes the predictable, kiln-dried performance in eliminating shrinkage and providing seismic strength.

Ilhami Karaca, VK Engineering, Berkeley, Ca., attributes the growing trend toward structural wood members to their strength in bending, shear, and higher modulus of elasticity.

Cliff Johnson, Blakely, Johnson & Ghusn Structural Engineers, Reno, Nv., notes that "the glulam system works well because its design values are stronger than LVL or parallel strand lumber. Also, we can nail Sheetrock directly to the beams and avoid the dropped or suspended ceiling that's required with steel framing."

SURFACE sealing and individualwrapping with plastic paper protects glulams against moisture and "diesel dust'during shipment.

After just two months, response has been excellent. "It's a case of getting our name out there," says Alan Ross, asst. mgr. of MacBeath's Berkeley, Ca., branch. "The first orders came from our immediate area in California, but now most of the orders are going back East, to hobbyists and woodworkers looking for furniture squares. glues, veneers."

The venture's potential is "wide open," he says. "We're always looking for new ideas, testing to see what works. We'll be adding informational links and a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page."

Still, the heart of MacBeath's operations continue to be distribution yards in San Francisco, Montebello, Ca., and Salt Lake City, Ut., a retail yard in Berkeley, concentration yard with dry kilns and milling facilities in Edinburgh, In., and corporate offices in Lafayette, Ca. The company carries a full line of domestic and imported hardwoods, hardwood plywood and veneers, including thicker lumber and hard-to-find items.

K.E. MacBeath founded the company in the fall of 1954 in Berkeley. With the help of his son, Bill, Manuel Lavrador and Joe Cortese, the business continued to grow. ln 1962, a wholesale hardwood yard opened in San Francisco. The Salt Lake City yard was purchased in 1966 and the

Montebello branch added in 1976.

MacBeath acquired the Edinburgh operation in 1983, signaling its entrance into the green lumber business. Last May, the firm opened a new concentration yard in Edinburgh, handling a broad range of domestic species in all thicknesses. "Our specialty is mixed loads, so we have to have many items on hand to meet our customers' needs," says president and ceo Carter Rothrock. "We do not carry a large volume of any one species."

The l5-acre facility stocks 3 million bd. ft. Kiln capacity increased from 300,000 to 500,000 bd. ft.

"We negotiated an agreement with the David R. Webb Co. to take over the vacated Bradford Forest Products yard," Rothrock relates. "Webb will be leveling our old property and putting up a domestic veneer showroom and warehouse. This move has siven us some automated lumber han-

dling equipment and a sling sorter that will help our efficiency."

Each distribution yard sells to endusers in their own and surrounding states, with more distant sales primarily to other distribution yards. The yards ship lumber in their immediate areas on company trucks. Edinburgh ships across the U.S. on contract carriers. About a third of all lumber shipped from Edinburgh goes to the company's yards.

"We pride ourselves on our ability to ship mixed containers and truckloads on a day's notice," Rothrock says. "All of our lumber is re-inspected after kiln drying and sold on a net tally. With the acquisition of the new property, we have the capability to keep all our lumber under cover. This reduces the degrade in the air drying process and gives the lumber a much brighter appearance. Packaging is the name of the game."

/HAT constitutes a great leader?

V Y That question is asked of me as often as "What makes a great salesperson?" Here are areas I believe are most important to remember:

Culture - Leaders are the spearhead for the corporation's culture. Fanaticism has its place here. Anything less than a culture that calls for greatness in everything you do won't work.

Planning - Regularly review the sales and marketing plan and the business plan. Focus intently on sales, particular clients and development of your human resources.

Time utilization - How many days a month do you spend with clients, listening to them? And with your group? Now, how many days should you be?

Think - Instead ofjust doing, leaders must make quiet time to think about new ways of doing things. An aircraft parts company has quiet rooms where employees can read selfimprovement books and magazines. Everyone needs to be challenged to more fully utilize their brain, to think creatively.

Feedback - How do your peers think of you? How do your subordinates feel about you? Ask and see if there are any surprises to your selfperception. Get a management personality profile run on you so that you better understand yourself and the image you project.

Failing - We learn more from failures than successes. Yet, most leaders have not encouraged their people to fail more. Failing usually comes from doing new things. Did everyone on your staff do one new thing last week?

Proactive - Leaders rarely have all of the information they need for a decision. When you wait for all the details, your final decision may be too late. Don't worry about being 1OO7o correct 1007o of the time.

Creativity - Encourage everyone to put every creative idea they have on the table. Defend an individual if more than half of his ideas are duds.

Don't worry about

being 100% right 100% of the time.

Becoming a super leader

Intuition - Experienced leaders, through many victories and defeats, learn to stay tuned to their intuition. When doubt crawls in and your "gut feeling" tells you something is wrong. it probably is.

With the duds come the gems.

Appreciation - You have a lot of quiet, behind-the-scenes people who don't get a lot of attention-and probably don't want any. What they do want and need is a little appreciation. Just a cup of coffee with one new person a week will pay dividends. Listen to them, because they know more about their sector than you do.

Fun - Is it the most fun place in the town to work? When people love what they do, they perform better.

Giving - Leaders gain respect and power by sharing their time and talents and not taking credit from others. Give to get.

Listening - Leaders ask tons of questions and listen intently. Introverts do not usually say much. When they do, hang on to every word.

Cutting-edge - What unheard-of service do you offer that no one else does? Keep the edge on your group to provide suggestions for low-cost, value-added services that will create a niche in the marketplace. Think about a service that creates a partnership with clients.

Succession - If you ran into a telephone pole tomorrow, who would take your place? Never let yourselfor anyone else-be indispensable. Put in everyone's job description that they must recruit, select and train their replacement.

Courage - Many leaders do not tell their chief the truth. Silence is not golden. it is cowardice.

Mission - Everyone needs a reminder as to our mission statement. Eat, sleep and breathe it. Make it real. Get everyone involved.

Resources - Leaders understand that most people have not been stretched enough. Provide targeted training and education and you earn the right to raise expectations from everyone.

Re-energize - Leaders always keep the edge on everyone. They often utilize the word "absolute," so that everyone understands that anything less than an all-out effort is intolerable. Let them see the fire in your belly from time to time. Then furnish unexpected rewards to those who came early. stayed late, came in on Saturdays and to those who spoke out. Give them a day off, a dinner for two or whatever.

Hard/Soft - Managing is usually either a hard or a soft style. Leadership is both hard when you should be and soft when appropriate. Hard means "I'm not going to let you behave in a way that may hurt you down the road." Soft is "I care about you and I want to help you."

Lowe's Begins Westward Push

It's a long way from company headquarters in North Wilkesboro, N.C., nevertheless, Lowe's Cos. Inc. is betting heavily on the wisdom of following Horace Greeley's advice.

As part of its announced goal to open 100 new stores in Nevada, Arizona and Southern California in the next three years, the chain has opened six stores in Southern California and Nevada since midDecember.

In addition, the firm will expand into Northern California by opening several stores in the Sacramento and Bay areas.

Southern California's first Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse opened in Bakersfield in late December, followed by January openings in Palmdale, Long Beach and Temecula.

That same month, the chain debuted its first converted Eagle Hardware & Garden in Norwalk, Ca., as a Lowe's unit.

The former Eagle store features the identical configuration of Lowe's eastern stores and carries the same brands, according to spokeswoman Suzanne McCoy.

"We're continuing to evaluate opportunities for some of the brands that Eagle carries which Lowe's doesn't," she said, adding that currently Lowe's doesn't carry any Eagle brands.

As for Northern California, the firm has not determined how many stores it will open in the region, although spokesman Brian Peace said one day there will be "dozens" of Lowe's around Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland and elsewhere in the Bay area.

The 54-year-old company will open a huge store in Folsom later this year and reportedly plans additional storcs in Citrus Heights, North Natomas, Roseville and outside Elk Grove.

Plus, ground has been broken on an $80 million, 1.25 million sq. ft. distribution center in Perris, reportedly one of the largest single-story buildings ever constructed in California.

Elsewhere in the West. Lowe's opened a 140,000-sq. ft. store in Summerlin, Nv., about l5 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip.

According to Mccoy, the new location is the first of several Lowe's

coming to the area.

"We haven't made any announcements for specific locations, but we do plan to have a major presence in Southern Nevada." she said.

In noting that the first New Mexico Lowe's is scheduled to open in midMarch, McCoy said the firm could open up to five stores in the Albuquerque area.

Albuquerque already is home to three Home Depots, two HomeBases, Hacienda Home Centers and several independents.

Slow Boat To China, Beware

New trade policies for exporting to China state that all U.S. goods must have proper packing material certification, or risk being destroyed.

However, recognizing the need for flexibility, China said non-compliant shipments will be quarantined at the exporter's expense for up to 60 days while awaiting proper certitication.

Local agencies have been given jurisdiction to assess fines for noncompliant companies that fail to present the proper ccrtification within a reasonable period of time.

Brothers On WayTo Prison

The owners of the now defunct Cal-State Lumber Sales, San Ysidro, Ca., have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to 15 months after pleading guilty to filing false federal tax returns, according to San Diego News Services.

Benjamin Acevedo Rosas, 42; Manuel Acevedo Rosas, 46, and Victor D. Acevedo Rosas, 49, reportedly confessed to conspiring to defraud the U.S. government by failing to report substantial amounts of income on their tax returns. Their tax preparer, Cory M. Homnick, 45, also pleaded guilty to helping prepare one of the false tax returns that omitted over $l million in income.

Distributors To Merge

PrimeSource Building Products agreed to acquire the assets of Prudential Metal Supply Corp.

Prudential, a building products packager and distributor with 1999 sales of $ 146 million, operates l0 distribution centers.

Carrollton, Tx.-based PrimeSource, with 1999 sales of $741 million, operates three manufacturing plants, 16

packaging plants and 37 distribution centers. The fate of DCs in overlapping markets is undecided.

Both companies serve a similar customer base (lumberyards, home centers and specialty distributors) with similar product lines, such as roofing and builders hardware.

The deal is expected to close midmonth.

Parr Pushes Prefab Panels

Parr Lumber, Portland, Or., has developed dimensionally accurate prefabricated wall panels made from steel and wood components that reportedly are stronger and lighter than conventional wood framing.

For use in custom and production housing, Soloflex Walls are laid flat on the jobsite, nailed, and then tilted upright into place, much like conventional framing.

The difference is that the pre drilled walls are mostly assembled at the factory, saving time and materials. Built to specification and dry rot-resistant, Soloflex Walls are allegedly easy to align and yield truer, straighter walls than conventional framing.

"We're typically seeing savings of

- Attonymous up to 80 hours labor in framing a 2,000-sq. ft. house," asserts Ruxton Schuh, program mgr.

Big W Selling Door Business

As part of its plan to focus on its core businesses, Weyerhaeuser Co. agreed to sell its door manufacturing division to merchant banking firm Saunders Karp & Megrue for an undisclosed cash amount.

In 1999, the Marshfield, Wi., plant made and sold 720,000 customized architectural doors. The deal is anticipated to close by early April.

Last year, Weyerhaeuser sold is composite products business and closed its chlor-alkali plant in Longview, Wa.

There are a lot of good reasons for carrying L-P Solid Start' products: wide variety, a limited lifetime warranty and the fact that they build great homes.

Softwood Pact Under Attack

A bipartisan resolution calling for discontinuation of the four-year-old U.S./Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement has been sponsored by 32 Congressmen.

Resolution 252 calls for termination of the pact when it expires April l, 2001, "with no extension or further quota agreement," and urges the President to "continue discussions with the government of Canada to promote open and competitive trade between the United States and Canada for softwood lumber," and to "consult with all stakeholders, including consumers of softwood lumber products, in future discussions regarding the open trade of softwood lumber between the United States and Canada."

Critics of the treaty say it has increased lumber and home prices, contributed to wild swings in the supply and price of lumber, and discourages, instead of encourages, free trade.

"The Canadian quota agreement was presented as managed trade, but it has been mismanaged trade and worse," says retailer Tom Ross, chairman of the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association. "We are enthusiastic about the Concurrent Resolution to end mismanaged trade and return to the American public free trade market conditions that will suppo( affordable housing."

Quota supporter W.J. "Rusty" Wood, chairman of the Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, countered: "The resolution calls for an open competition for lumbcr but with no call for an end to Canadian lumber subsidies."

The Clinton Administration does not want to extend the pact, but hopes to find another way to settle disputes over stumpage.

Wickes Sells Builders Via Internet

Two Wickes Lumber stores are the first to begin using BuildscapePRO, a password-protected Internet site for professional hornebuilders

Developed by Buildscape, Inc., the system helps builders procurc materials from sales reps and suppliers they know and have established credit with. For local retailers, it combines their physical inventory with BuildscapePRO's huge virtual inventory.

New services corning online in the next few months include wireless ordering from the job site and communications capabilities to help manage subcontractors and customers.

The pilot program, which began at Wickes stores in Pensacola, Fl., and Pascagoula, Ms., will soon expand to other chains, before rolling out nationally in the summer.

Down River Plant Shut

U.S. Wood Products' Down River Forest Products facility in Woodland, Ca., willpermanently close in mid-April.

Ernployees were notitied of the closure February l5 in accordance with the federal 60-day regulation. The plant will continue to operate as existing orders are conrpleted.

The plant manufactures red alder components for domestic and export markets. According to company spokespersons, the red alder market has been oversupplied for several years, causing the Woodland operation to be consistently unprofi table.

The plants in Stockton, Ca., and White City, Or., will continue to be ooerated bv U.S. Wood Products.

Hammcre d by Home Depot, Lowe's Cos. and other competitors, HomeBase Inc., Irvine, Ca., will debut a new home furnishing and interior design concept in five stores within the next year.

Whilc analysts praised thc new concept, nrany cautioned the firm not to overextend itself, particularly since HomcBase lacks the capital to writc ofl'such a costly endeavor, should it fail.

Sheetrock Maker Flies While Stock Flounders

Despite recent record sales and profits, Sheetrock producer USG Corp. was ranked the Worst l0-Year Stock Performer by the Wall Street Jou rnal's Shareholder Scoreboard.

From December 1989 to December 1999, USG posted an average annual compound total return of negative 14.4%, placing it last among the 649 Scoreboard firms with l0-year performance histories. Shareholders who invested $1,000 in USG at the end of 1989 now would hold about $212 in stock.

Since emerging from bankruptcy six years ago, though, USG has paid down $l billion in debt, boosted profits four-fold, and is increasing sales l57o annually. Last year's wallboard shortage helped USG record net income of $421 million, up 27Vo from 1998.

Yet investors expect a slowdown in new home construction will hinder future earnings, especially with the drywall shortage ending and USG continuing to add new $100 million plants. Two facilities opened last year and three more will be completed over the next 12 months, each to pro-

duce twice as much drywall as an old plant, but at half the cost.

USG's ranking on the list also reflects that its stock continued to trade through the bankruptcy, brought on in part by having to pay $l million in interest a day on a crushing $2.5 billion debt.

Other building products companies on the Worst Performing Lists included Owens Corning (#12 over the last l0 years, #14 over five years, #18 over three years), Louisiana-Pacific (#10 over five years), and Armstrong World Industries (#24 over three years).

The only building products-related firm on any of the Best Performing Lists was Home Depot (#25 over l0 years).

ldaho Sues Forest Service

The State of Idaho is suing the U.S. Forest Service, claiming the federal government is not giving state officials any say in a plan that proposes to set aside 50 million acres of U.S. land to remain roadless.

The state filed suit after its

LISA

Freedom of Information Act Request was denied, asserting more time was needed to consider the "roadless protection" plan than the 60 days states were given.

"What we're asking of the federal government in this lawsuit is to open up the process to provide a meaningful dialogue between the states that would have to live with the effects of this proposal," said Idaho governor Dirk Kempthorne. "Any significant relationship between the states and the federal government deserves nothing less."

Idaho Attorney General Al Lance called the plan "completely unacceptable," and said he is seeking a standard 120-day extension to allow officials and preservationists sufficient time to review survey results. "The project is moving so quickly that it is impossible to provide meaningful comments," he added.

Forest Service officials said the first order of business is to survey where timber has already been sold and awarded, then to evaluate areas in which timber has been sold but not formallv awarded.

An Affalr In Washington

The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association's annual Legislative Conference is being held April2-5 in Washington, D.C.

The opening address, "Building the Affordable American Home." will be by Bob Mitchell, president, National Association of Home Builders.

They will offer perspectives on how the two parties will likely try to end trade restraints on this controversial issue.

The April 4 keynote address will be delivered by Housing & Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo. Jim Nicholson, Republican National Committee chairman, and Joseph J. Andrew, national chair, Democratic National Committee, will deliver the April 5 keynote addresses.

Existing Home Sales Cool

Sales of existing single family homes fell l0.7Vo in January from a month earlier to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.59 million units, according to the National Association of Realtors.

The rate is lO% below the 5.10 million-unit pace of a year previous and the lowest rate since November 1997.

Analysts point to rising mortgage rates having pushed some potential buyers out of the market. For the week ending Feb. 25, 30-year fixed rate mortgages averaged 8.3lVocompared to 6,89Vo a year before. That increase adds over $100 to the monthly bill on a $200,000 mortgage. Sales also have slowed due to lower inventories of available homes. According to NAR, in January only a three-month supply of homes were available for sale, the smatlest inventory since the association began tracking the data in 1981.

Sales in January fell in all four regions of the country, most markedly in the West, with its ultra-tight home market. [n the West, sales plummeted 27.3Vo from December to an annual pace of 1.04 million and 22.4Vo from January 1999. The region's median resale price was $172,20O, up O.lVo from a year earlier.

Ace To Open Three Stores

Ace Hardware Corp. and Ace Hardware Norlhwest, LLC, plan to open three new stores in the Portland, Or., area within the next 12 months. It's all part of a program that allows successful Ace retailers to expand their business and increase their market share.

The joint venture involves a capital investment from Chris and Joanie Dunn, owners since l98l of two Ace stores in Canby and Enterprise, Or. In turn, Ace will provide additional capital and supply all up-front inventory, which will be specially dated. While the locations of the new stores have not been determined, all three will be serviced by the Yakima, Wa., retail support center.

OSB Contracts Now Regional

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange has launched separate Oriented Strand Board futures and options contracts for Western (Los Angeles), Southwestern (Dallas), Southeastern (Atlanta), and North Central (Chicago) regions, since the products are generally produced and used within specific geographic areas.

In addition to the four delivery regions, new features of CME's contracts include mill and warehouse delivery as well as truck and rail delivery. Warehouse delivery permits wholesalers easier participation in the market from either the buy or sell side. Truck delivery gives buyers and sellers the use of the most cost-et'tective form of transportation. The new contracts replace mill- and rail-only delivered contracts.

The exchange, which has off'ered trading of futures and options on random length lumber since 1969, began trading OSB futures and options in 1996. Their OSB contracts are sized at 100,000 sq. ft., which is one boxcar or three truckloads. Contract months traded are January, March, May, July, September and November.

Sears Hardware Copies OSH

Six new Sears Hardware Stores will open this year, modeled after the format of their Orchard Supply Hardware stores, but without the OSH name.

At 55,000-sq. ft. each, the stores will be over twice the size of cunent Sears Hardware Stores. The company will evaluate the success of the new Midwest and Northeast locations before deciding on whether to open others.

Hardwoods For High-End Decks

Decks are going even higher end, as homeowners have become more interested in connecting the exterior to their interior space.

"The exotic has gone mainstream," notes Brian Lotz, managing director of Timber Holdings Ltd. "While a $10,000 deck was extravagant in the early '90s, decks now oftcn range up to $75,000. The deck and amenities can be used as a second, self-contained living space."

For luxurious installations, the company supplies Iron Woods brand hardwood decking which, unlike softwoods, reportedly lasts a lifetime.

"But beware." cautions Lotz. "not all woods are created

equally." Just like for softwoods, there's a range of grades, which set standards for allowable defects, such as sapwood, worm holes, knots, and moulder tear-out.

There are three generally accepted standard grades in the industry: FEQ/FAS (First And Seconds); FIF (First I Face); and #2 (Seconds). All ofthese grades allow various amounts of defects.

So, Timber Holdings created its own grade above industry standards, Premium Select Crade. Every piece of Iron Woods is selected to meet the company's premium zerodefect standard on all four faces. Every hardwood board sold is clear, straight and over-length, so there is no waste, no picking through to frnd usable boards. "We regularly reject 20-40Vo of production when re-grading FEQ/FAS to our Premium Select standard," says Lotz.

Lower grades are then converted into interior-grade products where the defects are not subject to decay and harsh exterior environments.

"We know this high grading standard adds cache to the brand," said Lotz, "so we hand-pick and sort every board at the processing mill before it goes into distribution."

Many hardwoods are both durable and beautiful, naturally resistant to wear, and useful for decking, arbors, fence panels, raised gardens, posts, rails, cabinets, and pool surrounds.

Look for more and more of these woods to be used, both in new and retrofit construction. "Decking, fences and other exterior amenities built with these woods do not require near-term replacement," said Lotz. "It's a one-time installation that saves contractors margins and frustration year after year. And it pays back property owners every time they look at it."

Hydraulic Boxes Boost Fleet's Productivity

Ut., has increased its delivery capacity by a third-without adding drivers.

As well, the operation boosted fuel economy by 3 miles per gallon, increased driver and customer satisfaction, and reduced damage writeoffs by 759o, all since purchasing a new fleet of trucks equipped with "removable boxes."

"Due to increased productivity, the new container system has paid for itself in eight months," says operations manager Brett Worthington "As for the trucks, we knew the Kenworth T30Os were higher priced than othcrs

Cedor Products

in the medium-duty class, but when you look at lower life-cycle costs and resale value, better fuel economy (BMC West gets up to I l.l mpg), and what the Kenworths mean to our drivers and corporate image, it's well worth it to us."

The Sandy operation has been so successful that other transportation managers for BMC West have visited to develop similar distribution programs.

The transformation began with a simple premise: design a system that maximizes labor. BMC was using outdoor loading-forklifts loaded prehung doors in three straight trucks with flatbeds and curtain sides. It was a time-consuming process.

With the design of BMC's new door facility underway, Worthington had an opportunity to start from scratch. The first move was going from outdoor loading to a more efficient dock operation. Next came an analysis of how to transport doors.

"Drivers were spending much of thcir day waiting for loads to be completed at the door fac i lity," Worthington says. "We decided it was more efficient to develop something similar to a drop-and-hook operation. This way a container could be loaded while our driver was out making deliveries."

But that didn't mean a tractor/trailer combination. "That would be too expensive and it wouldn't work for our operation," Worthington explains. "We have tight delivery areas at rcsidential and commercial job sites. A trailer couldn't handle our maneuverability requirements."

The solution was found in removable containers. "What we opted for were removable 24-ft. boxes with hydraulic legs, adjustable to four different heights," he said. "They come right off the chassis of the T300, and it takes our drivers just four minutes to change boxes. What's more, it's 3007o faster to load these boxes compared to our old curtain trailers. And we increased the load capacity in each box by 607o."

Helping to speed deliveries is a hidden ramp in a false bottom for easy unloading at customer sites. And the hydraulic legs can come into play at these sites as well. "We've used the hydraulics to lift the box to a delivery level higher than the truck,"

Worthington says. "This saved our crew a lot of work. For large jobs, we've actually left the box at their location for unloading-<harging the customer a rental fee."

Back at the BMC location, boxes are ready whenever a driver returns. The box is slipped off and re-stationed for loading and the new box is picked up and secured. All told, the time savings at the loading dock has meant a third more deliveries without adding more drivers. What's more, since less handling is required at both ends of the delivery, damage write-offs are way down.

"More than 757o down the first month," Worthington notes. "Remember, we handle finished product that cannot be damaged-a cherrywood door can cost more than $700, and we can load up to 140 doors in a box."
