All-Coast driverc: Gany Ashinhust, Larry Miller, [/ark Sallady, Dale H0ltkamp, and J0hn Swearengin recently gathered in preparation for "The World's Greatest Truck Show," a charity benelit in Pomona, CA which they've been contributing their time and resources to for the past 15 years.Over the years on this page we've added our voice to those urging an industry-wide coalition to promote wood. Now, it's finally here.
Called the Wood Promotion Network, it is a collaboration of 120 members and allied industry associations. They have raised an impressive war chest of $45 million for a three-year education program targeted at builders, retailers and consumers. Both American and Canadian firms are investing cash and in-kind contributions. The WPN is led by a council of coalition c.e.o.'s and managed by a small internal staff supported by strategic marketing partners.
The campaign kicked off at the National Association of Home Builders' International Builders Show in Atlanta. Ga.. last month. Under the banner "Be Constructive," it trumpeted the message of wood's central role in home construction, home improvement and remodeling as well as do-it-yourself projects.
"Wood is the greatest story never told," says Kelly McCloskey, president and c.e.o. of the WPN. "Wood is the material that literally built North America. from the dream home to the oick-
et fence that surrounds it, and we want everyone to know why wood continues to be the preferred building material for builders and homeowners alike."
Bozell Chicago, the marketing experts that created the Got Milk? and Pork-The Other White Meat campaigns, is developing the program along with BsMcWorldwide/Chicago. The broadbrush approach includes trade and consumer education and promotion on the use of wood and wood products.
Their Web site, beconstructive.com, puts facts, articles and tips for professionals under one roof. For builders: issues and answerst for homeowners and d-i-yers: making home decisions, do-it-yourself and a wood resource center. Future additions will include projects for parents and kids, lesson plans for teachers and students, plus labor and code regulations for builders.
We wish them all the success in the world. Our only regret is that the industry hasn't been promoting and explaining the benefits of wood for the last 50 years.

DRODUCT maintenance has I become an important consideration for today's consumers.
Everyone is so busy today that few people have time to spend washing their car, to say nothing of staining a deck or painting a fence. With all of the substitute synthetic materials available to today's busy consumer, one must also keep in mind that California redwood is one of nature's most maintenance-free buildine materials.
By Charles Jourdain Vice President Californiato another.
In a damp or humid climate, redwood used outdoors will go through two stages, the first being a darkening of the wood. In time, this darkening may be rinsed away by rain, and the redwood will weatherbleach to a soft driftwood gray.
on redwood may not be the same on all sides of a house. This is because sunlight and water cause redwood's color changes, and different areas of a house usually have varying types of exposure.
Two boards installed side by side may also vary in color because of the diversity of color and texture offered by individual pieces of redwood lumber. This is one of the aesthetically pleasing qualities of a natural material such as redwood, compared to the artificial uniformity of synthetic products.
Should a more uniform appearance be desired, redwood's natural color changes, a result of the weathering process, are completely reversible by following guidelines presented in the California Redwood Association's Technical Data Sheet, "Color Restoration of Redwood Siding and Decks." The project can then be coated with a pigment-containing stain or paint.
This is a good selling point for customers when they are making building materials decisions. Redwood can either be finished, or left to weather naturally. It is their choice.
its inherent stability and durability, is one of the few woods that can be left unfinished.
In fact. traditionally. many specifiers and builders have preferred that redwood be allowed to weather naturally without the application of a finish treatment. Fortunately, redwood, with its inherent dimensional stability and durability, is one of the few woods that can be left unfinished.
As redwood weathers, several natural color changes take place. These changes will occur over a period of vears and will varv from one climate
In drier climates, unfinished redwood may not darken. Instead, the wood will gradually turn a silvery tan, becoming lighter in color as the natural weathering continues.
Much discoloration may be the result of accumulated dirt, soot and mildew. All siding, decking and fencing will benefit from periodic cleanings whether they are natural redwood or synthetic products.
When used as siding, the effects of natural weathering
A PRIMARY factor in OSB's la.growth has been that it can be prodirced from a wide range of species, whether it's one that's readily available such as pine or what was previously considered a scrap wood, such as aspen. More limited in supply and more treasured due to its unique properties, cedar is not thought of in either of those categories.
Yet companies are using cedar for OSB. According to Dr. Leonard Guss, president of LGA Inc., a forest industry marketing research firm, "Yes, cedar is expensive for ordinary OSB uses. However, it is used for specialties where it is of high value. Cedar is well known for its resistance to rot, bugs and weathering. It is generally used as closet lining to kill moths."
For years, Huber Engineered Woods, Charlotte, N.C., has been producing l/4",4'x8' cedar panels at its OSB mill in Commerce, Ga. Made of I0O7o aromatic eastern red cedar, CedarStran panels protect silks and wool clothing without the unpleasant smell of mothballs or the expense of professional clothing storage. Applications include closets, shelving, cabinets, drawers, boxes and storage chests.
Huber says CedarStran OSB panels cost significantly less than cedar planking, and are stronger, stiffer and lie flatter than other cedar panels. Plus, it's smooth sanded to enhance aromatic emission and prevent snags.
According to Guss, "Estimates
vary since Huber keeps its numbers to itself, but my estimate is that a maximum of 60,000 cubic meters are used annually-that's a drop in the bucket."
So why OSB? Huber's Sherry Walker explains, "OSB is stronger than particleboard, and it fits within our manufacturing capabilities. It's a compatible product to pine and aspen at our OSB mills."
Guss adds that "another firm, Giles & Kendall. makes a product some-
Q. What is the difference between aromatic eastern red cedar and western red cedar?
A. There are many different species of cedar trees. Eastem red cedar and western red cedar are the most common in the building materials industry. Eastern red cedar has a scent that repels roaches, silverfish and moths, while resisting mildew. Westem red cedar does not have the same scent, but is ideal for outdoor applications. Eastem red cedar is recommended for indoor use, not for exterior applications or in areas that are subject to large amounts of water exposure.
Q. Uor long will closet lining's cedar scent last?
A. me scent should last the life of the closet. Cedar scent is released from oils that are trapped inside the wood, which escape rhrough small openings along the outer surface. The scent will be present as long as tlese openings are not obstructed.
Q. Wttut if the cedar loses its scenr?
A, ffre reason the cedar has lost its scent is due to the crystallization of the cedar oil that builds on the outside surface of the wood and seals the openings. To rejuvenate the scent, lightly sand the outer surface of the cedar with 100-gdt sandpaper or scour lightly with steel wool.
Q. Wfrat are the besr finishes to use?
A. Staining or sealing aromatic cedar products is not recommended because it seals in the natural aroma of the product. If, however, you do wish to stain the product, use a non-oil based polyurethane, varnish, or shellai.

times called cedar OSB, but it's notit's a particleboard and lacks OSB's strength and exterior exposure qualities."
Giles & Kendall's products include Cedarline and Supercedar cedar closet lining, as well as Cedarberry Hill aromatic cedar closet accessories. Larger logs are cut into squares from l/24"thick cedar veneer for the furniture industry and plywood industries.
The Huntsville, Al.-based firm steam distills its sawdust to produce "Oil of Cedarwood," which is sold worldwide to cosmetic and perfume industries. The spent sawdust is used as boiler fuel to produce steam for the cedar oil distillation plant, kiln drying operations, and veneer mill.
In addition, Ced-Or Forest Products Inc., a subsidiary of Ced-Or Corp,. is building the first cedar OSB plant in Canada. Expected to be completed by year's end, the Bearn, Quebec, operations will mill 325,000 cubic meters of cedar annually.
According to Guss, the mill "will make other specialties where cedar's attributes of longevity and bug killing will be useful, such as house siding."
f ONG used as fencing. siding and .l-,Jpaneling. primarily near the Southeastern coastal communities where it grows, cypress has begun making in-roads into new applications and regions, once the domain of redwood. cedar and other species.
According to Bill Bell, owner and general manager of strictly cypress Kempfer Sawmill Inc., St. Cloud, Fl., "Over the last five to seven years, redwood and western red cedar have both become harder to come by, more expensive, less available, and their quality appears to have gone down. People who have sold redwood and cedar for years are starting to look for alternatives. All along, cypress was just kind of sitting, waiting in the wings."
Certainly, with an entire cypress industry producing a combined 100 to 120 million bd. ft. a year-"a spit in the ocean of the overall U.S. lumber volume," says Bell-its threat is limited.
Cypress, agrees Donald Elder, Elder Forest Products, Sulphur, La., "will always be a limited thing. Sierra Pacific probably has a single mill that annually produces more lumber than the entire cypress industry does combined."
Still, proponents argue that cypress' limitations are more perception than reality. "It's somewhat lim-
ited, but there's plenty out there to handle growth," notes Bell. "The drawback of cypress is that it is produced at relatively small mills and, as such, has never had leverage from a broad marketing standpoint, like southern pine."
Bell claims the time is ripe for quality substitutes. "Cypress is such a unique species," he says. "It is one of the most beautiful woods there is, and it has the same tensile strength as southern yellow pine, a tight grain structure, resists decay and rot, works well inside and out, and has an enormous range of users. Windows, doors, turnings, it can go to all those places. The outdoor furniture market is wide open, playground equipment, hot tubs, furniture components, novelty-type things like boat paddles, cypress shakes for houses."
For about a year, Product Sales Co., Orange, Ca., has been selling cypress "all over Southern California," says sales rep Doug Willis. "After a slow start, it's now selling pretty well, primarily due to the lack of redwood items, especially in beveled siding."
The firm has run other products, including tongue-and-groove items. paneling and other siding patterns, and Willis foresees gradual growth "on the upper ends of the grade, to replace upper grade redwood and cedar. As yet, we have not brought in any common grades (of cypress)."
Product Sales' main cypress supplier, Elder Forest Products, received its first order from California in the spring of 1999, and has been shipping finished beveled and bungalow sidings, interior paneling and a complete line o[ planer blanks there ever since.
Donald Elder attributes cypress' success out West to "its availability in some specialty items. It's a stable

wood. It finishes well, to so many different color variants. It has tremendous physical properties, and is considerably stronger than redwood or cedar. As well, people may be seeing it for the first time."
"We are receiving more inquiries from (the West), but have sold very little there," says Gary Barnes, Barnes Lumber Manufacturing, Statesboro, Ga. "Our cut-off point is about Missouri. with almost all of our business localized in the Southeast."
Barnes does get calls. "Last week, we had an inquiry from a guy in California. I think he was interested in hot tub components," he says. "But if it's going to the West Coast, it has to compete with western red cedar, Douglas fir and other species there, so freight becomes a problem."
There's also a big new player, Universal Forest Products, reportedly the nation's leading supplier of wood components. Last summer, Universal signed on as the exclusive sales agent for Sunshine State Cypress, Inc., Hosford, Fl., Florida's largest cypress producer. The pact will provide Universal with 10 million bd. ft. annually of cypress lumber that will be remanufactured at its Moultrie, Ga., facility.
With its established distribution network, Universal expects to introduce cypress to a range of new markets. "Our new products include timbers for log home manufacturers, pattern stock for spa builders, a lot of different sidings, even canoe paddles-for whatever we can interest anyone to use cypress," says Pete Boven, Universal's vice president of operations for the Southeast region. "We have received inquiries from playground manufacturers, window and door people, flooring material, and interior paneling producers."
He adds: "We've been actively selling cypress for about seven months and we've received a tremendous reception. Buyers recognize its
inherent beauty, so they want to look at the species and see if it can work for them."
Universal is selling only finished products, including a higher line of dry, surfaced fence pickets for the pro fencer. "Right now we're kicking a lot of tires," says Boven, noting that he expects the specialty items to fare better in the West. "By the time you truck it all the way to the West Coast, cypress fencing will be more expensive than redwood and cedar," he explains. "lt makes more sense as pattern stock for a spa manufacturer, who buys it very selectively and pays more for it."
Further expanding cypress' market area is one goal. "As far as fencing, we've gotten calls from Texas to Virginia. For grade lumber, paneling and siding, from the Midwest to New England. Spa manufacturers on the West Coast. We have a rep in the United Kingdom, and we're considering exporting to the Orient, where cypress traditionally is very popular."
also a clique market; they like something different."
As a hardwood producer, Roy O. Martin specializes in supplying remanufacturers, so wood headed west is destined for kitchen cabinets, door panels, mouldings and other interior architectural applications.
Georgia-Pacific, Atlanta, Ga., on the other hand, is content concentrating on the Southeast. "I don't know of any new business out of the East," says Pat Kenny. "We've had a stronger hold on the East than our competitors because we were the volume that made it happen. We drove the market. It was business for us to lose. So. it's in our best interest to contain [o an area where it has fewer problems and customers are familiar with it."
For the last few years, Roy O. Martin Lumber Co., Alexandria, La., has sold cypress to the Far East, including furniture markets in China and Taiwan. According to Jonathan Martin. "The trend is to widen our customer base. The bulk of our sales are still to our local market, but we have an ample supply of logs, so we're always looking for new places to sell."
Targeted domestic markets include the Midwest (Kansas and the Oklahoma City/Tulsa area), Denver and Southern California. "We're looking at the Los Angeles/San Diego market," says Pat Abbney, domestic hardwood sales manager. "The attraction is that is primarily a redwood and cedar market. But much of the redwood and cedar now is second and third growth, with a lot of sapwood and less red heart. (Customers) are not quite as happy with it. It's
Another reason is that last year G-P permanently shuttered its cypress mill in Alcolu, S.C. Although the company continues operating two other South Carolina mills that produce cypress, the closure, Kenny says, "cut our cypress production in half, and we don't expect to be able to replace that production. We're now trying to carve our niche with smaller volume."
Coastal Lumber Co.. Weldon. N.C., "ships an occasional load away from the East Coast, but most of our markets are the same remanufacturers we've always sold to," according to Lyman Shipley.
He wouldn't be surprised, though, to one day find his company selling cypress farther west. "It may turn into that, because of promotion of the species," Shipley says. "Cypress used to be used in a lot of siding, but is now losing part of that market to substitutes. As a result, a lot of cypress is going into interior products such as millwork."
Cypress manufacturers don't expect to overtake the nation, but they would like to make a dent. Notes Elder: "Our product is used coast to coast-there are just some places in between that we have to reach."
CYPRESS adds character to seasonal rooms and Dorches. AT SUNSHINE State Cypress, boards are sorted and graded on the "green line," EDGE LINE gives boards a clean edge.EIOR DECADES. the California
L'Redwood Association has helped builders specify redwood, has provided project plans for do-it-yourselfers, has trained lumber merchants to sell redwood products, and has made connections between buyers and sellers.
1,400 people visit the CRA Web site.
When it came to developing a Web site for the redwood industry, we knew exactly what it needed to do. It needed to be an extension of everything we are doing over the telephone, in our product literature and in our advertising.
In January 1997, CRA acquired the Internet domain name www.calredwood.org and began promoting redwood products over the Internet. From day one, there were separate areas on CRA's Web site for homeowners, builders and merchants. There was also an area that discussed the redwood forests and explained how the redwood forests are regrown after harvest and how the mills protect wildlife and waterways.
On a typical day during the summer of 2000, over 1,400 people visited the Web site and spent an average of 10 minutes at the site. Some of them were visiting for the first time and others were returning, often refer-
ring to a specific page that they had previously bookmarked.
Nearly 100 visitors each day were interested in CRA literature. They downloaded Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files with information on decks, fences or
technical data sheets. Over 28 publications are available, including project plans, picture idea booklets and technical data sheets. These files can be viewed on screen or printed out. Redwood merchants with f ax/ modems in their computers sometimes use these files to fax CRA literature to their customers in response to technical questions.
Hundreds of visitors each day were interested in CRA's plans for projects such as benches, a picnic table, gazebos, decks and fences. They visited pages where they could read and print step-by-step instructions for these projects. Detailed plans with dimension callouts are available along with 3-d models that can be turned and viewed from any angle.
About 50 visitors each day were looking for a source for redwood, and they visited the redwood locator. These people found local sources by selecting a state and city. Other people were looking for specific products from playground equipment to redwood seedlinss and used CRA's
directory of specialty products. Each day, many people had specific questions about redwood properties, redwood grades and redwood applications. They looked at the Frequently Asked Questions ("FAQs") pages, where they learned why redwood is the best choice for decks, fences and many other projects. They found answers to questions about redwood grades, finishing options, fasteners and environmental issues. Those whose questions weren't of the "frequently asked" variety sent emails to CRA, and their questions were answered by CRA's technical staff.
For four years now, our Web site has served as a natural extension of all the old-fashioned activities of the association.
For about the cost of developing and printing a new piece of product literature, calredwood.org is helping homeowners, builders and merchants. And, best of all, it's still doing it when we turn out the lights and go home at night.

I Lumber Co.. Olympia. Wa.. by Welco Lumber Co., Marysville, Wa., last September brought together two firms that specialize in western red cedar manufacturing.
According to Skookum's marketing director Jim Mace, a study revealed that the two businesses would become stronger if they were operated as one firm rather than run separately.
"The Skookum plant in Shelton, Wa., has an efficient small log fencing sawmill along with a remanufacturing facility for producing high quality kiln dried bevel sidings," Mace says. "The four steam-heated dry kilns have waste wood fired boilers that produce the steam to kiln dry the knotty western red cedar products. The Welco sawmill in Marysville is a modern state-of-the-art facility that produces 66 million ft. of western red
cedar annually. Welco can receive logs by water or by truck, extending the distance logs can come from to serve the sawmill."
Grown mostly in coastal forests from Northern California to Southwest Alaska, western red cedar also grows in the drier interior forests of Washington, Idaho and British Columbia. Despite being a durable and exceptionally beautiful wood, western red cedar can be somewhat of a riddle to unknowing buyers who can become lost in the wood's many specialty products and grading rules. These products are valued primarily for their appearance. Therefore, cedar grading rules are based on appearance more than on structural strength.
"The key to the quality of knotty products lies in the quality of the logs," Mace says. "The logs we use are from new growth trees from the Puget Sound basin. The source of the
raw logs is vital in determining the end product." He adds that while second-growth cedar, which is found mostly in Washington, has less heartwood, the wood does contain more material suitable for tight knot sidings. In addition, western red cedar can have varying characteristics due to regional differences in soil and climate conditions, a point buyers should be informed of when they are choosing products made from the wood.
Established in 1976 at the base of the Olympic Peninsula, Skookum Lumber Co. specializes in kiln-dried, tight-knot bevel siding, better known as lap siding or clapboard siding. Bevel siding is a traditional pattern that has been used in North America for well over 200 years and remains a popular siding style today. Skookum bevel sidings come in a variety of thicknesses from 1 12" to 7 18" , and feature appearances from rustic to a more refined, traditional look that can be used with most contemporary architecture.
"Welco will market about one half of its production to remanufacturers throughout the U.S. as well as British Columbia," Mace says. "The other half will be shipped by truck to Shelton to be manufactured into select tight knot western red cedar products."
Welco operates three western red cedar fencing sawmills, Mace says. "The fencing sawmill at Shelton is a small log mill," he says. "The mill in Marysville is a large log fencing mill. The mill in Naples, Id., cuts a wider range of logs up to 29" in diameter."
He adds that the combined capacity of fencing is "roughly 500,000 ft. per day."

V Y strangling the supply of timber from Idaho's federal forests, Boise Cascade Corp., Boise, Id., is permanently closing its plywood and lumber operations in the state.
Lumber and plywood operations and an electrical power/cogeneration facility in Emmett and a sawmill in Cascade, Id., will close by mid-year.
"I am very disappointed that we are forced to take this step. Idaho is the corporate home of Boise Cascade," said George J. Harad, chairman of the board and ceo. "However, we simply no longer have an adequate and reliable supply of timber from Idaho's federal forests with which to operate our mills."
According to Harad, "We have worked for years to promote an understanding at the federal level that the national forests can and should provide dependable and sustainable resources for Idaho's forest industry, while meeting all of their environmental objectives. However, despite an adequate supply of timber, under the policies of the Clinton Administration and pressure from environmental groups, the amount of timber offered for commercial harvest has declined more than 9O7o over the past five years."
Combined with intensive litigation and appeals by environmental groups, Harad does "not believe this situation will change anytime soon."
Approximately 375 positions will be eliminated-about 215 in Emmett, 80 at Cascade, and 20 additional forestry and administrative positions. The company does not expect to sell the facilities to another wood products manufacturer since "a new owner would face the same situation that Boise Cascade has been facing for over a decade-an inadequate supply of timber from federal land." In addition, a new owner would not have access to Boise Cascade's timberlands in the state.
A laminated beam facility in Emmett, currently being expanded with the addition of a new press, and the RiverBend remanufacturing plant in Horseshoe Bend will continue to
operate.
The closures will mark the end of virtually all of Boise Cascade's wood products manufacturing operations in Idaho. At one time, Boise Cascade also operated mills in McCall, Council, and Horseshoe Bend.
Still, the company will retain a sig-
nificant presence in the state with a total of over 1,300 employees at its corporate headquarters, corrugated container plants in Burley and Nampa, office products DC in Boise, and building materials DCs in Boise

HomeBase continues veering further from its hardware roots as it tweaks the product mix at future House2Home conversions.
For the second round of 17 House2Home openings in Los Angeles and Orange counties in May, the chain is eliminating many traditional hardware products, such as power and garden tools, faucets and paint, while adding a children's merchandise department.
Although the costly conversions contributed to the company losing $70 million last year, executives remain confident since the new format's first five stores are exceeding expectations.
In addition, the HomeBase in Brea, Ca., will remain closed, as the other four Orange County locations begin their remodels.

The newly formed Wood Promotion Network has launched reportedly the first-ever campaign to build awareness of wood as the world's best building product for home improvement, remodeling and d-i-y projects.
By mobilizinC U.S. and Canadian companies and industry associations, the three-year, $45 million "Be Constructive" campaign hopes to educate consumers and professionals about the attributes of wood and support lumber retailers.
"Wood is the greatest story never told," said Kelly McCloskey, ceo and president of the 120-member-andgrowing WPN. "Wood is the material that literally built North America, from the dream home to the picket fence that surrounds it. We want everyone to know to know why wood continues to be the preferred building material for builders and homeowners alike."

A new type of pressure treated wood-Wolmanized Natural Selectis now in production at Conrad Forest Products. North Bend. Or. The wood is treated with Wolman E preservative.
The first dealer to stock the product was Truitt & White, Berkeley, Ca., which received its initial load Jan. 10.
The latest addition to the Wolmanized line is pressure treated with a copper-based preservative. which contains an organic fungicide. In use in l5 counties in Europe, Australia and Asia, it reportedly has become the most successful alternative to CCA treated wood.
Natural Select Wood is suitable for
above ground and soil contact applications. Initial projects are expected to be playground equipment, outdoor specialties, decks and walkways, especially in locations where there are environmental concerns or restrictions. and where consumers want a choice in preserved wood.
Industry and code agencies have recognized the preservative qualities of Wolman E preservative. It is listed in the standards of the American Wood-Preservers' Association as copper azole (CBA). Model code evaluation reports on Natural Select treated wood have been issued by ICBO ES and SBCCI PST & ESI; a report is expected soon from BOCA.
Conrad Forest Products has been preserving wood since 1958 and offers a range of treatments. The company is producing Natural Select wood in Oregon at both its North Bend and Rainier facilities. By using an ammoniacal formulation, Conrad will treat Douglas fir for structural applications and hem-fir for general outdoor construction. Conrad serves the western states and Pacific Rim markets.
Wolman E preservative was developed by Arch Wood Protection (formerly Hickson Corp.).

EarthSource Forest Products, a division of Emeryville, Ca.-based Plywood And Lumber Sales, Inc., has opened the San Francisco Bay Area's first 1007o "green" hardwood lumber company.
Now located in Berkeley, EarthSource features a variety of certified, sustainably harvested hardwoods and wood products, including flooring, and guarantees all purchases, whether for commercial, craft or "do-it-yourself' meet Forest Stewardship Council criteria.
"The Bay Area has long been an epicenter of positive social change, so where better than Berkeley to introduce the region's, and quite possibly the entire state's, first, allgreen hardwood lumber outlet," said EarthSource's sales and marketing mgr. Larry Percivalle.
PALS launched EarthSource in 1997 from its Emeryville location to offer certified domestic timber, such as cherry, maple, oak, birch and ash; certified tropical lumber, including mahogany, machiche, Spanish cedar and amapola, and a variety of certified plywood and salvaged timber.
"Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion, among both professionals and consumers, about certified wood," explained Percivalle. "Our all-green warehouse takes the guesswork out of purchasing certified products. Whatever the need, consumers can be assured that the wood purchased from our Berkeley location is environmentally friendly, and they'll also find the region's best selection and largest stock on hand-all at or near the same price as less-responsible options. "

While metals such as copper and brass are currently in vogue in residential and commercial construction and home furnishings, platinum and chrome are strictly also-rans, according to color experts.
The increasing popularity of metals indicates a "back-tonature" trend, according to Nada Napoletan Rutka, Nada Associates. "For home furnishings, silver has been very important colorwise for the past few years."
Copper is another metal whose popularity is on the rise, according to Ken Geremia, Copper Development Association. "Over the past 10 years we've seen a continual increase of 57o to 67o in copper applications by architects on an annual basis," he said. "Copper roofing, gutters and flashing are especially popular items for commercial and residential projects. We're seeing its popularity cycle again now with increased interest in using metals as design accents both in and on homes."
Redwood mills, remanufacturers, wholesale distributors and landowners are forming the Redwood Promotion Group, a new division of the Cal ifornia Redwood Association. Participants will contribute to a promotion fund that will be used to deliver a strong, clear message about redwood to homeowners, specifiers and builders.
Recently, redwood has faced increasing competition from other species and wood substitutes. Consumers have expressed concerns about environmental issues regarding redwood. The new group will produce advertising and point-of-purchase materials to illustrate the benefits of redwood. The campaign also will emphasize that redwood is a renewable resource, which is being produced on a sustainable basis.

A bit of foresight has allowed an Ace Hardware owner to weather Califomia's energy crisis smoothly.
ln 1991, Bill Wygal, who owns four Ace units in the San Francisco East Bay region, received a $94,000 loan from a little-known state program that offers low-interest loans to small businesses and non-profit organizations that want to improve the energy efficiency of their workplaces.
After receiving his loan from the Energy Efficiency Improvement Program, Wygal installed solar panels on his store in Martinez. Ca.. a move that he says saves him about $1,000 per month on his electric bills.
"We're probably saving more right now. since electricity is so expensive," he states. "It's probably about a $ 1,500- to $2,000-a-month savings."
Wygal hopes to receive another 5Vo interest rate loan to add solar units to one of his other stores, although he said he is not looking forward to completing the plethora of paperwork required for the application process.
The program, which began in 1989, offers loans up to $250,000 for up to five years.

The closing of six plywood mills during 2000 leaves 103 plywood operations in the U.S. and Canada, according to APA-The Engineered Wood Association.
Closures last year included Temple-Inland Corp., Pineland, Tx.; Willamette Industries, Inc., Ruston, La.; Louisiana-Pacific Corp., New Waverly, Tx.; International Paper Co., Waycross, Ga. ; Willamette Industries, Inc., Dallas, Or., and Potlatch Corp., Jaype, Id.
Along with two other mills that ceased operations indefinitely, the
A Fontana, Ca., couple were arrested Feb. l2 in Rancho Santa Margarita, Ca., on suspicion of burglarizing or robbing l3 local stores and restaurants, including an armed holdup of a Home Depot in Laguna Hills.
Police said Todd Hill Smith, 32, and Rebecca Jean Mangan, 24, are believed to have committed numerous stickups with a baby in the back seat of their getaway car.
shuttering reduced plywood capacity by 1.2 billion sq. ft.
Of the 103 plywood mills, 90 are based in the U.S., with the remaining l3 located in Canada. Since 1987, 65 American and Canadian plywood facilities have closed.
Meanwhile, OSB continues to increase its capacity, thanks in part to the addition of four new mills during 2000: Nexfor, Inc., Joanna, S.C.; Georgia-Pacific Corp., Fordyce, Ar.; Footner Forest Products Ltd., High Level, Alberta, and Weyerhaeuser Co., Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan.
According to an unnamed store employee, no one was injured in the Home Depot robbery. "No one was hurt, that's all I can tell you," he said. "I don't even want to say when the crime occurred, it was just in the early part of the month, that's all I'm going to say."
The couple, who were captured after their car broke down, are facing charges of armed robbery, burglary, auto theft and child endanserment.
Kinzua Resources, LLC, Veneta, Or., is completing the second phase of an upgrade to its Pilot Rock sawmill, which will double its production capabilities, according to spokesman Gary Murdoch.
Previously, the 73-year-old facility, which was acquired by Frontier Resources in 1994, produced about 66 million bd. ft. annually, mostly ponderosa pine and Douglas firllarch.
The growing demand for Kinzua's products led to the upgrade, Murdoch says, plus the firm wants to establish new niche markets.
In addition to upgrading the lumber handling equipment, a McGehee 2000 small log processor was installed to optimize the conversion of small-diameter logs into lumber on a high-volume basis. Other new machines include a trimsaw and flat board edger, a high-speed small log debarker, a merchandising system for the McGehee and a 12" double arbor gang saw.
Home Depot co-founder and cochairman Arthur Blank unexpectedly announced his retirement effective May 30.
Claiming he did not want to cast a long shadow over his successor, ceo Bob Nardelli. the former ceo said it was his decision alone to step down, adding that he had "tremendous confidence" in Nardelli. "A clean break made the most sense." Blank said. "I felt zero pressure."
Since co-founding Depot in 1978 with co-chairman Bernard Marcus, 71, Blank,58, has overseen its growth into the nation's #2 retailer, second to WalMart Stores Inc., with 1,149 stores in the U. S., Canada and Latin America.
When former GE executive Nardelli was named ceo in December, (see Jan., p. 26 and Feb., p.25) some industry analysts expected Blank to remain active in the business for one to two more years.
Blank, however, said it was imperative Nardelli be recognized as the sole leadership voice in the organization, an issue not likely with Blank hovering in the background.
"People were spending too much time checking my temperature," Blank said. "Their loyalty and allegiance needs to be to the culture of the company, needs to be focused on one person as the essential leader, and that needs to be Bob Nardelli."
Some experts view Blank's departure as troublesome for the chain,
pointing to its financial problems, including a 2O7o drop in fiscal fourthquarter earnings.
Nardelli, for his part, wasted little time assuming control. announcing plans to open 200 stores this year, down from the 225 previously
planned. Some analysts viewed the shift as a negative sign, while others said it indicates the new boss is committed to cutting costs and boosting the efficiency of existing units.
The future for Marcus, meanwhile, is uncertain, as he reaches the mandatory retirement age from the board in May 2002.

Expanding the capabilities of window engineering software has opened significant opportunities for door manufacturers.
Most early users of WTS Paradigm'(formerly known as ProShape) have been window manufacturers, but makers of stile and rail doors, raised panel doors,,and custom specialty doors are among those recently incorporating the technology.
The software is provided as either a'stand-alone program or fully integrated with the WoodWare System business application package.
Advantages of WTS Paradigm for door companies include:
The ability to design architectural doors that are unique from project to project with the ease of a standard product selection.
The ability to select standard patterns that may closely match the desired product. This base design can then be manipulated to match customer requirements for stile width, rail widths, profile type, pattern layout or any other custom attribute required.
The ability to engineer and create a manufacturing cut list that takes into account production methods, tolerances, and manufacturing I imitations.
Weathervane Window Co., Kirkland, Wa., is among the window and door companies using the software.

only $44lm.
Also enclosed is a picture of my father, D.H. Nelson. with a load of lumber from E.K. Wood's harbor yard on its way to an Ontario lumberyard. Note the shovel to dig the truck out if it got stuck and the jacks on top of the load to tighten the chains. Evidently, he didn't have chain binders. With the hard rubber tires it was an all-day trip to the harbor and back.

California hardware retailers are reporting an increase in sales of emergency and energy-efficient supplies, as consumers try to save on utilitY costs while keeping their homes lit and warm amid scattered power outages.
Consumers are stocking up on flashlights, firewood, candles, insulation and weatherstripping, according to store employees statewide. Meanwhile, sales of fluorescent bulbs and generators in particular have been strong for Home Depot, which reported hefty sales increases for both products from this time last year.
Demand for emergency lighting and energy-efficient bulbs also is up, according to Wayne Flittner, Home Depot, Thousand Oaks. "They've taken the vendor by surprise," he said. "They're having a hard time keeping up with demand."
Michael Moore, assistant manager, Lowe's, Fresno, said he recently doubled his order for fluorescent bulbs. "We can't keep them in stock," he said. "ln the past, we could keep about 100 fluorescent bulbs on the shelves for about a month. Now, it's a matter of days before we sell out."
Bill Freed, a Home Depot manager in Oxnard, said portable generator sales also have increased. "We can't get enough of them," he said. "Everyone is sold out of them throughout the region. We sold our 20 quickly and they cost $400 to $500 a pop."

Garth Smith, Dale Hardware, Fremont, said many customers have inquired about energy conservation. "It boils down to economics," he said. "They want to cut their electricity bills."

"My wife said she doesn't like fluorescent lighting because it bothers her eyes, but I snuck one in and she didn't notice," he confessed. "So now I'm going to replace every light bulb in the house."

To say that Boise Cascade BMDD 0utside Sales Representatives Bob Gengler and Brook Hatfield will go the extra mile for a customer is a bit of an understatement. Take the time when their customer sold BCI'Joists t0 a contractor who had never used engineered wood before. Bob and Brook could sense his hesitation, so they offered to drive out to his job site and help him frame the floor. Even though it meant each of them driving over 600 miles round trip.
1,100 feet of BCI's later, the contractor had a new floor. And Bob and Brook had one very happy customer.
At Boise Cascade EWP, and at each one of our nationwide network of distributors, we know that keeping your customers happy is the most important part of your job. And we'll do whatever it takes to make it easier, even if it means driving clear across the country for a project.
0r driving a lew nails when we get there.
For your nearest distributor,
