We must win

Economic news improves. Housing numbers are high, interest rates stay at record low levels, and in general, industry smiles seem quite broad for now. Talking around the country these past few weeks, almost every sector is reporting high volume levels. Some have indicated the highest level of business they have ever seen. Yet, while still very early in the season in some parts of the country, there are clearly some issues developing that will impact one end of the channel or the other. or the entire channel.

Clearly prices are rising in almost all product categories. In some areas, like OSB and panels, prices have doubled and almost tripled since last year. I am hearing in almost every category issues such as a lack of logs, lack of capacity or finished product, product allocations, no new customer capacity, lack of commitments for product two months out, higher freight costs, lack of freight carriers, and cash flow issues that higher prices bring, etc., etc. For

so early in the season, this will be a concern as the year oeaks a few months from norv.

However. there will be two issues in the second half of the year that will perhaps define the year of 2004. First, it is, of course, an election year. This column is not political, but this will be a year when every vote will count, as in 2000. There are some very large issues on which voters will need to decide. While taxes, health care costs, government spending, jobs, outsourcing, workers compensation will be major domestic issues, the one issue that stand over all of us is the war on terrorism.

The recent train bombings in Spain clearly show that terrorists can still strike at any time, in any place. Now, each of us as individuals might have our own personal opinions about whether the war in Iraq was right or not. But, if we have learned anything as we watch our television screens nightly and watch the murder of our troops and civilian contractors, it is that the thought of a stable democratic govemment in Iraq is troubling to the terrorist community. It is the sign that they know they are losing the war.

As I write this column, the 9ll l Commission spectaclefull of sound bites, backside covering, and pass the blamegrinds on. We watch nightly as the news seems to get worse. There is no doubt that not one of us wants to watch our brave troops come home in body bags, but let us clearly understand our will is being tested to the limit. There are some, who want us to pull out, and this is exactly what our enemies expect us to do.

The turnover of authority on June 30, will give the lraqi people the opportunity to take control of their own destiny, and we know from our own history that democracy does not come easily. and does not come without a price. We will need to be there to hold their hands through the troubled time they will inevitably go through.

This will be a bloody year, and unfortunately in an election year, there will be those who will try to profit from the bad news. Our enemies will no doubt try to commit some atrocities that will sway the vote as in Spain recently. If we fall for that we will pay a price the likes of which we perhaps cannot fathom. We need a government that will not shirk their responsibility in hounding down our enemies, and going after them, and doing what it takes.

Our weakness was exploited on 9/l 1, and every government since 1993 takes responsibility for what happened that day. We turned a blind eye over and over again to events such as the earlier bombings of the World Trade Center, U.S. Embassy in Kenya, and the SS Cole. Be sure that the government we elect in November will take on our enemies head on. The economic aftermath of another 9/11 can and will derail us all.

VVhere's your eb site?

r|'!HERE are few American indusI tries as venerable and down-toearth as the lumber business. It's not uncommon to see third-generation owners in bluejeans helping unload a truck rather than freshly hired out of business school, dressed in a suit, and hiding in their offices behind computer print-outs.

Consequently, it should come as no surprise that there are hundreds (in fact, likely thousands) of retail and wholesale lumberyards across the country with no presence on the Internet. In a random survey by The Merchant Magazine of 50 independent lumberyards across the U.S., 38 of them-or 167o-had no Web site.

"Site-less" dealers have ample excuses: Web sites cost too much to create. They cost too much to maintain. They won't generate revenue and offer no concrete value. We don't know how to build one or who can build one for us. We're too busy to worry about such "luxuries." We're not even sure we understand what a Web site is.

Yet, increasingly even the smallest businesses are discovering that customers expect them to have a Web site as much as they expect them to have a phone number.

The most important thing is not how elaborate your site is, but simply having one. It can be simple and inexpensive to set up and maintain-little more than an online version of a company brochure. Tell us who you are, what you sell, and how and when to get ahold of you.

Bells and whistles-including fancy graphics, downloadable order forms, customer registration and electronic sales-make a site work harder, but are optional.

Many businesses hire a professional Web design firm to produce their site, but as the process becomes more mainstream, there are plenty of money-saving alternatives. Contact the computer department at the local junior college to find a student designer. Ask around your own business to see if an employee has the skills or knows someone who does.

Or, with moderate technical and design competence, you can build a site yourself. Inexpensive and even free templates are available that don't require a great deal of design expertise. You can also purchase Web-editing software, such as Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia's Dreamweaver.

Another common approach for dealers is contacting their buying coop. Do it Best, for example, offers members three options:

store-specific information.

Do it Best site, such as www.nilsons.doitbest.com. For a $250 set-up charge and $15 monthly hosting fee, members receive a template-produced site managed by the co-op. Members can manage some information, such as store-specific specials.

Independent site, such as www. gillroys.com. Members create and host their site on their own, and for $10 a month connect to Do it Best for the shopping experience.

"Our intent is to make having a site as affordable and effective as possible," said e-commerce manager Brian Reed. In fact, he said the program is

More than

three-quarters

of independent lumberyards surveyed had no Web site.

designed as a money-maker, since participating dealers receive 100Vo of the profit on all sales in their area.

Whoever designs your site will be able to assist in registering (and periodically reregistering) your domain name. A list of accredited domain registrars also can be found at www.InterNIC.org.

create custom Web sites with minimal technical and design expertise.

. Domain only, such as scottys. doitbest.com. For $15 a month and no set-up fee, members are included in the e-commerce program with a cobranded page, but can offer no other

The final expense is hosting on a Web server-the equivalent of monthly rent for your slice of Cyberspace. With a little research, you can find a company to host a basic site for well under $10 a month.

No matter your course, adding your own Web site can be a quick, painless and affordable procedure.

Get the 'tude Keys to excellent customer senrice

on the people and hard on the issues to be resolved. This is a must in order to take care of the customers, themselves, their co-workers, and your organization. Educational subjects that will contribute to this attitude include assertiveness training, negotiation training, and persuasion skills (Yes, you can even call it sales training!).

A 'tude says: "I think like my most demanding customer."

Yet, we're not just talking about individuals here-we're talking about your whole organization. As more products are driven into the commodity category, delivering customer service excellence is critical to establish value in the mind of the customer.

You may have some enlightened mavericks in your organization that get it. These front-line saints are contributing to the bottom line with every transaction. They must be backed with congruency in the organization and education for strong communication skills for everyone in the organization or these people will leave your organization. Or worse, they'll just stop delivering customer service.

Here are some suggestions to develop and keep the 'tude, dude:

A'tude says: "I am a courageous listener.t'

When customers have a problem. they want to be heard. Unfortunately. when they need to be heard the most is when they have gone ballistic. At that point, they have most likely forgotten all of their communication skills. They attack the very person from whom they need help. A courageous listener is able to clear up any personal doubts. "This customer is frustrated, hurt and angry, and they need to be listened to. I have the courage to understand and not react to any personal attacks that

express them with a smile and plenty of positive personality.

may come from their frustration." Listening is especially challenging when the person facing you is surrounded by negative energy. Yet that is exactly what the individuals in your organization must be trained to do. They must be given the communication skills to overcome the customers' communication weaknesses. This includes having practiced the listening skills enough to be able to SOME get it. some don't. and some LJnever will! Attitude is key ro customer service excellence.

A'tude says: "I am hard on issues, soft on people."

Develop the communication skills to show empathy and establish a partnership in responding to a problem. Show empathy by listening, feeding back expectations, and looking for resolutions. Build partnerships by being assertive in redirecting the customer to the issues and away from personal attacks.

Develop the desire

always exceed customers' expectations with smiles, words and actions.

The individuals in your organization are the single most important element in a customer interaction. If they're not at their best, nothing they are associated with will be the best. Exceptional customer service will never be delivered by a victim or a codependent in an abusive relationship. They must learn the communication skills to be assertive and insightful enough to use assertiveness skills, when appropriate, to keep the relationship in a parlnership situation.

A situation where evervone is easv

Develop the desire to always exceed a customer's expectations with smiles, words and actions. Reward the individuals in your organization for asking themselves the tough customer service questions. How can I deliver more value? Make this a memorable experience? Turn this negative situation into a positive experience that's good for all parties-the customer, the company, and me?

Have you or has anyone you know ever had a bad experience with Nordstrom or Federal Express? The answer is probably yes! These companies are not perfect, but they get it right many times more often than they get it wrong. Why? They empower and reward their employees to use their best judgment in all situations and spend the company's money to do it!

How long does the euphoria of exceptional customer service last? At most. only until the next experience outside their expectations of regular service. However, if your last experience was exceptional, you are much more likely to start off with a positive attitude, and that makes everyone's job easier. To provide your organization with the opportunity to deliver exceptional customer service, conduct internal focus groups, strategic planning, creative thinking, and experiential learning sessions.

Why are scientists putting so much emphasis on genetically modified foods-is this something we really need to pursue?

Genetically modified foods have great benefits for human health and our environment, so yes-I believe it is something we need to pursue.

Genetic breakthroughs in agriculture are already enabling us to prevent certain diseases and pest infestations in food crops while reducing the use of chemical pesticides and without affecting non-harmful species.

Second, and perhaps the most important environmental benefit, is the ability to increase the productivity of our agricultural lands, which is critical as the world's population continues to

grow. The more food we're able to grow on an acre of land, the less land we have to clear for agriculture. That means we can keep more land as forests, grasslands, savannas and other wilderness areas.

In addition to the environmental gains, genetically modified foods have already proven to have enormous potential for improving human health. One example is golden rice, which will eventually be available for commercial planting. By splicing a gene from daffodils into rice plants, two Swiss scientists have created rice that contains carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. Given that every year some 500,000 people, mainly children in India and Africa, go blind due to vitamin A deficiency, this rice has the potential to signifi-

Solid homes. Solid value.

Genetic modification is an extension of the cross-breeding that's been going on throughout agricultural history to create the foods we know and depend on today. Genetically modified foods undergo extensive testing and scientists have yet to find a negative health consequence. I believe most criticism is founded not in science, but in political agendas and the desire to raise alarm-and doesn't account for the potential to protect and enhance human health and the environment.

It's important to treat any scientific breakthrough with caution, but the idea that we should stop learning and applying knowledge in the real world doesn't make sense. The benefits of genetic modification are too great.

Given their tremendous potential for good, I believe that a sensible environmentalist would support continued research and the application of those agricultural advances that are shown to have a positive impact on human health and the environment.

Eel River Auctions Mills

Eel River Sawmills auctioned off two mills in Redcrest, Ca., April 15-16 as part of its ongoing liquidation.

The firm had been marketing the properties for several years and almost sold them to Eel River Lumber Products, which acquired its Mill A in Fortuna, Ca.

Up for auction were a large log sawmill, finishing equipment, dry kilns and other equipment. After the auction, the land went back to the Childs family, which has leased it to various mills.

With the recent mill and equipment sales at the now-closed GeorgiaPacific sawmill in Fort Bragg, Ca.,

and the Sierra Pacific mill in El Dorado Hills, Ca., auctioneer James G. Murphy was optimistic about the auction.

"The last three sales have been very encouraging," Murphy said. "The buyers seem to have a more positive mindframe now."

The mills closed in 2001.

Here Come The Brides

Home Depot is adding a new service to its repertoire: bridal registry. The home improvement chain's research shows that more people are getting married later in life and already have appliances, china and cutlery, but may not have the tools needed for home upgrades.

While industry insiders don't think the registry will provide a major boost in profits, they do feel it's a good idea because it strengthens the relationships with customers.

Lowe's is also considering a bridal registry, but is not yet ready to make any official announcement.

Among the 839 people who have already registered on Home Depot's Web site, the top items were a double hammock with stand, a wheelbarrow, and an electric power washer.

Chinook Adds New Stores

Eric Fritsch, owner of Chinook Lumber Co., Snohomish, Wa., has expanded his business throughout Grant County, Wa.

Fritsch acquired three sites in Quincy, Ephrata and Royal City, Wa., formerly owned by Able Building Supply, and opened branches of Chinook Lumber April 14. He bought the Ephrata store and has options to buy the other two, but declined to buy Able's two other stores in Moses Lake

and Wenatchee. Wa.

"It would be a management challenge, in terms of competition," Fritsch said. "We can handle three stores, but five would be too much of a stretch."

Fritsch also noted that the Wenatchee location was a very small site surrounded by immediate competition, while Moses Lake was an expensive property with four other retail operations in town.

Cosmetic renovations totaling $100,000 were made to each of the stores, including a new roof to one of the stores, exterior paint, signage, and stripping the floors. While all new inventory was bought, Fritsch did not buy any of Able's former equipment. only the locations.

"It's been quite a learning curve," Fritsch said. "The systems are different from Able."

Currently, the three new stores employ 20 people, but Fritsch expects to eventually employ 25 associates.

FSC Certifies Potlatch Land

Potlatch Corp., Spokane, Wa., reportedly has become the first publicly traded timber company in the

U.S. to earn certification from the Forest Stewardship Council for forest management.

Certification of Potlatch's 670,000 acres of Idaho timberland took two years and will require annual updates. The company will decide by the end of the year whether it will seek similar certification for its 485,000 acres of timberland in Arkansas and 320,000 acres in Minnesota.

Arch Buys Chemical Firm

Arch Wood Protection and Arch Treatment Technologies are the beneficiaries of parent company Arch Chemicals' $2 l0-million acquisition of Aveica's Biocides business.

"The integration of these businesses will enhance our ability to provide exciting new wood treatment products to our customers by broadening our knowledge base and expertise," said Arch president Steven Wisnewski. "This acquisition fits very well into our program of parternships with global leaders in chemical and pharmaceutical products to tailor their specialty ingredients for use in preserving and protecting wood."

GCA Suit Denied Class Action

The U.S. District Court in western Louisiana has denied class action status to a lawsuit challenging the safety of CCA treated wood.

The ruling in Ardoin vs. Stine Lumber Co. was made after the plaintiffs attempted to dismiss their own lawsuit. The court denied the plaintiffs' request and ordered a hearing on the class issue. In a strongly worded ruling for the defense, Judge Patricia Minaldi rejected all of the plaintiffs' arguments for class certification.

This is the third time a court has rejected class certification of a case challenging the safety of CCA treated wood, according to Arch Wood Protection. No court has ever granted class action status to such a case.

Jim Hale, executive director of the Wood Preservative Science Council, noted, "This ruling is a major vindication fbr the treated wood industry."

Fencing Maker Stakes Claim

Trumeta Corp., Camarillo, Ca., expects to "redefine" the fencing industry by introducing advanced production techniques. unique new designs, and an extensive dealer support program.

"The fencing industry suffers from a lack of creativity in product choices combined with inconsistency in quality and service," said c.e.o. Mark Maldonado. "By implementing a multifaceted, highly professional approach to creating, distributing and supporting this product category, we hope to do for fencing what Federal Express did for ovemight shipping."

Founded in 1992 as Atlas Fencing, Simi Valley, Ca., Trumeta was acquired in July and recruited new management, headed by former Intel executive Maldonado. The company produces ornamental iron, aluminum, vinyl, chain link and barbed wire fencing, as well as gates, gate operators and custom fencing hardware.

MillWould Lower Fire Risk

A proposed sawmill in Bellemont, Az., would cut the risk of wildfires in the area by utilizing small-diameter trees. The trees have been congesting

the Coconino National Forest resultins in wildfires.

Savannah Pacific's $15 million mill would utilize a specialized "gluebonding process" and other technology that turns pine into a harder wood. The majority of the machinery would come from a mill acquired in Oregon.

Coconino National Forest Supervisor Nora Rasure informed Savannah Pacific president and c.e.o. Jeff Garver that the forest could supply his company with 20 million board feet annually for the next l0 years.

According to Jeremy Christopher with the Greater Flagstaff Economic Council, economically speaking the agreement would be a win-win situation for the region. The sawmill would employ 100 people and create an additional 75 jobs.

Court Grants Wickes Loan

A federal bankruptcy judge approved a $115 million credit for Wickes Inc., Vemon Hills, Il., to help the company restructure and emerge from Chapter I I protection. The money, which will help Wickes pay employees, maintain operations, and buy goods and services, comes from a group of banks led by

Menill Lynch Capital. It consists of two term loans totaling $37.3 million and a $77.6 million revolving loan commitment.

"We are grateful for the support of our lenders and the confidence they have displayed in Wickes by meeting our funding needs," said Jim O'Grady, Wickes president and c.e.o. "The court's approval of our DIP credit facility will enable us to continue to operate without interruption, meeting our ongoing business obligations and properly stock our stores as we enter the spring building season."

Fletcher Challenge Renamed

Fletcher Challenge Forests has changed its name to Tenon Limited, reflecting its rapid evolution from forest owner/manufacturer to wood processing, marketing and distribution.

"Tenon is a powerful link to the heritage of woodworking," explained chairman Sir Dryden Spring. "It is the way to form one of the strongest wooden joints possible. It is short, unique, easily remembered, and lends itself to strong visual branding."

The company is based in Auckland, New Zealand, with U.S. subsidiary Tenon USA based in Hanover. Md.

Weyerhaeuser Settles Case

Weyerhaeuser Co., Federal Way, Wa., reached an agreement with Coast Mountain Hardwoods, Inc. to settle a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Portland, Or.

In the settlement, Weyerhaeuser agreed to pay $14 million before taxes with no admission of liability.

Coast Mountain Hardwoods, a Canadian company that is now a unit of Weyerhaeuser, claimed Weyco monopolized the alder sawlog and finished lumber markets and committed fraud. The plaintiffs originally sought $820 million, but later reduced its request to $420 million-$90 million for attempted monopoly and $330 million for alleged fraud.

According to Weyerhaeuser representatives, the settlement will result in an after-tax charge of approximately $9 million in the first quarter.

Software For Weyco Mills

Weyerhaeuser Co., Federal Way, Wa., recently began using Activplant software at nine of its wood products manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and Canada to maximize productivity.

"We selected Activplant based upon a close fit with our stated

requirements, particularly ease of implementation and use," said Kevin Shearer, director of Weyerhaeuser's IT wood products division.

Weyerhaeuser plans to use the software to analyze throughput and identify causes of machine downtime.

According to Activplant c.e.o. Dennis Cocco, "Activplant will support Weyerhaeuser's journey of continuous improvement by vastly reducing the time it takes to identify and eliminate sources of lost productivity and quality while enhancing the overall performance of its mills."

TruServ Makes The Grade

Ina recent consumer survey

TruServ dealers got high marks in customer service.

The research was collected between November 2002 and April 2003 by Consumers' Checkbook in five major markets including Seattle, Wa.; Chicago, Il.; Boston, Ma.; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Mn., and Delaware Valley/ Philadelphia, Pa. Consumers provided more than 30,000 ratings for local hardware stores and home centers.

Two separate surveys were administered. The first was given to do-ir yourselfers regarding the features they

felt were most important in hardware stores, and the second asked consumers to rate the hardware store in which they shop.

In five out of eight categories including prompt services, receiving advice, staff attitudes, and overall quality, the results indicated that True Value hardware stores were better than the competition.

Pamela Forbes Lieberman, TruServ president and c.e.o., said, "True Value store owners go the extra mile to satisfy their customers."

Home Depot's Safe Insurance

Greenpeace Argues Mill Sale

Three years ago a veneer mill in Ketchikan, Ak., closed down. Now, Timber Products, Springfield, Or., is considering either buying, leasing, or performing sales and marketing for the operation.

However, Greenpeace has raised some objections to reopening the mill.

Representatives from Greenpeace say the project would log old-growth

trees in Tongass National Forest.

Roger Rutan, v.p.-marketing for Timber Products, said that the company has already identified secondgrowth logs for the mill, therefore eliminating Greenpeace's concerns.

"The issue of old growth is not on the table," Rutan said. "The mill was engineered to be a small-diameter log milll it can't handle logs more than 20 inches [in diameter]. You start talking about old growth, but the mill physically can't handle that."

If Timber Products is to purchase the mill, which it expects a decision on in one to three months, its primary purpose would be manufacturing plywood products.

Old Weyco Mill Dismantled

Weyerhaeuser Co.'s White River sawmill near Enumclaw, Wa.-shuttered since early 2003-is being demolished.

Staton Cos., a Eugene, Or., demolition firm began dismantling the mill in early April, leaving only scrap metal to sell to recyclers and concrete to be ground up for aggregate.

Weyerhaeuser spokesman Frank Mendizabal said that except for the

largest machinery, most mill equipment was sold before the demolition began. The rest will be moved as parts of the mill are taken down.

The administration building and truck shop will remain once the demolition is complete in August. Weyco has yet to decide what to do with those buildings. The site has been home to lumber operations since 1892.

In addition to White River, a Snoqualmie, Wa., finishing mill is schedule to close.

Lumber Exec Joins Panel

Jim Snodgrass, v.p.-export sales for Contact Lumber, Portland, Or., has been appointed by Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski to Oregon's International Trade Commission.

Mr. Snodgrass will serve a fouryear term on the commission with 14 other Oregon-based business people and two legislators. Commission members assist the international division of the Oregon Economic and Community Development department in planning and developing international trade policies.

Snodgrass' experience in international trade led to his selection.

Setting Priorities

fN 1970. sociologist Dr. Edward lBanfield of Harvard University wrote a book entitled The Unheavenly City. He described one of the most profound studies on success and priority setting ever conducted.

Banfield's goal was to find out how and why some people became financially independent during the course of their working lifetimes. He started off convinced that the answer to this question would be found in factors such as family background, education, intelligence, influential contacts, or some other concrete factor. What he finally discovered was that the major reason for success in life was a particular attitude of mind.

Banfield called this attitude "lons time perspective." He said that people who were the most successful in life and the most likely to move up economically were those who took the future into consideration with every decision they made in the present. He found that the longer the period of time a person took into consideration, the more likely it was that he would

achieve greatly during his career.

For example, one of the reasons your family doctor is among the most respected people in America is because he or she invested many years of hard work and study to finally earn the right to practice medicine. After university courses, internship, residency and practical training, a doctor may be more than 30 years old before he or she is capable of earning a good living. But from that point on, they are some of the most respected and most successful professional people in the U.S. They had long time perspectives.

The essential key to success in setting priorities is having a long time perspective. You can tell how important something is today by measuring its potential future impact on your life.

For example, if you come home from work at night and choose to play with your children or spend time with your spouse, rather than watch TV or read the paper, you have a long time perspective. You know that investing time in the health and happiness of your family is a very valuable, high-

priority use of time.

If you take additional courses in the evening to upgrade your skills and make yourself more valuable to your employer, you're acting with a long time perspective. Learning something practical and useful can have a longterm effect on your career.

The key word, then, to keep in mind when you're setting priorities is sacrifice. Setting priorities usually requires sacrificing present enjoyment for future enjoyment. It requires giving up a short-term pleasure in the present in order to enjoy a far greater and more substantial pleasure in the future.

Economists say that the inability to delay gratification is the primary cause of economic and personal failure in life. On the other hand, disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem and personal satisfaction.

So setting'priorities begins with your deciding what you want most in life and then organizing your time and activities so that everything you do is the most valuable use of your time in achieving those objectives. With your larger, long-term priorities in order,

Setting Priorities

(Continued from page 42 ) you can much more easily decide upon your shoft-term priorities.

You can say that the process of setting short-term priorities begins with a pad of paper and a pen. Whenever you feel overwhelmed by too many things to do and too little time in which to do them, sit down, take a deep breath, and list all those tasks you need to accomplish. Although there is never enough time to do everything, there is always enough time to do the most important things, and to stay with them until they are done right.

Once you have listed your tasks, ask yourself, "If I were to be called out of town for a month. and I could finish only one thing on this list, which one thing would it be?" Think it through. and circle that item on your list. Then ask yourself, "If I could do only one more thing before I was called out of town for a month, what would it be?" This then becomes the second thing you circle on your list.

Perform this exercise five or six times until you have sorted out the highest priorities on your list. Then number each according to its importance. With these priorities, you are

now ready to begin working effectively toward the achievement of your major goals.

Another method for setting priorities is the A-B-C-D-E method. Place one of those letters in the margin before each task on your list.

"A" stands for "very important. must do, severe negative consequences if not completed."

"B" stands for "important, should do, but not as important as my A tasks, and only minor negative consequences if not completed."

"C" stands for "nice to do, not as important as A or B, and no negative consequences for not completing."

"D" stands for "delegate. or assign to someone else who can do the task in my place."

"E" stands for "eliminate, whenever possible."

Using the A-B-C-D-E method easily sorts out what is important and unimportant. This then will focus your time and attention on those items on your list that are most essential for you to do. Once you can clearly see the one or two things that you should be doing above all others. just say no to all diversions and distractions and focus single-mindedly on accomplish-

ing those priorities.

Much stress that people experience in their work lives comes from working on low-priority tasks. The amazing thing is that as soon as you start working on your highest-value activity, all your stress disappears. You begin to feel a continuous stream of energy and enthusiasm. As you work toward the completion of something that is really important, you feel an increased sense of personal value, inner satisfaction, self-mastery, and self-control.

Use these six ideas every day to help set priorities and to keep you working at your best:

1. tate the time to be clear about your goals and objectives so that your priorities are moving you in the direction of something that is of value to you. Remember that many people scramble frantically to climb the ladder of success, only to find that it is leaning against the wrong building.

2. Develop a long time perspective and work on those things in the present that can have the greatest positive impact on your future. Maintain your balance in life by setting priorities in the areas of your health, personal relationships, and financial goals.

3. Commit to improving the aspects of your life that are most important to you. If you're in sales, learn how to be an excellent salesperson. If you're a parent, learn how to be an outstanding mother or father. The power is always on the side of the person with the best practical knowledge.

4. taYe the time to do your work right the first time. The fewer mistakes you make, the less time you will waste going back and doing it over.

5. Remember that what counts is not the amount of time that you put in overall: rather. it's the amount of time that you spend working on high-priority tasks. You will always be paid for the results that you obtain, not merely the hours that you spend on the job.

6. Understand that the most important factor in setting priorities is the ability to make wise choices. You're free to choose which activity to engage in, whether a higher-value or a lower-value activity. Then accept the consequences of your choice.

Mills Massage Health Goncerns

Pinched by escalating workers' comp costs, Pacific Northwest mills are taking matters into their own handsintroducing preventive massage therapy programs for employees.

Workers who operate headrigs, gangsaws, ripsaws, resaws and other machinery often perform constant repetitive motions, making them prime candidates for strains, sprains and other maladies.

"Basically when a person is doing repetitive work, like a grader flipping boards, it builds up scar tissue in the muscles that exerts pressure and causes pain," explained Dr. Greg Weidlich, a chiropractor used by several lumber companies throughout the West. "Through specific techniques to remove the scar tissue. ergonomics, exercise and general advice, we can reduce injuries, absenteeism and workers' comp claims. It's also good for morale, showing the company cares."

Three years ago, Weidlich treated for carpal tunnel syndrome two employees at the fingerjoint plant in Deer Lodge, Mt., formerly owned by Louisiana-Pacific. The therapy was so successful, the plant manager asked to initiate a pilot prevention program for a dozen workers.

From there, he introduced his therapy at other facilities, including Stimson Lumber, Collins Cos., and Forest Grove Lumber Co. He now services 14 timber manufacturing sites across the Northwest.

He or a local physician he has trained visits each location weekly, providing a form of soft tissue massage for l0

minutes or more per employee. Workers are temporarily pulled off the production line and straddle a chair in a break room or conference room, so the doctor can treat their backs. He then advises on stretching techniques and other exercises that can help mitigate any problems and in time maintain their health without the weekly visits.

Weidlich emphasizes that the therapy is for prevention and early intervention, not for treatment of long-standing problems. Patients requiring more serious attention are referred to a medical professional.

According to v.p.-human resources Nancy Helseth, Collins Cos. currently has about 30 employees participating in the program in Chester, Ca.; about 40 in Klamath Falls, Or.; eight in Portland, Or., and has just introduced it to its Lakeview sawmill.

Reportedly, the program has saved Collins thousands of dollars in time lost and potential workers' comp claims. Weidlich estimates Collins saved $24,000 in 15 months at Chester, Ca., and $156,000 in six months in Klamath Falls.
