If you still think certification of forest products is going to go away or that certified wood will remain on the fringe, recent developments point in exactly the opposite direction. At both manufacturer and retail levels, major players are making big noises about their dedication to forest certification and to products from certified forests.
Willamette Industries is currently telling its customers and the wider world of its commitment to third-party certification of its forest mangement practices in the West. The company is one of a number of participants in the American Forest & Paper Association's Sustainable Forestry Initiative. The SFI mandates rigorous forest audits performed by outside, independent experts.
At the retail level, various dealers around the country are beginning to adopt a meaningful role in the sale of certified products, including lumber, plywood, trusses, flooring, decking and the like.
Home Depot, the largest retailer in our industry and the fourth largest in the entire nation, has been environmentally committed for years. Indeed, they have had a v.p. for environmental affairs for nearly a decade. Statements by compa-
ny officials leave no doubt where they stand. At a recent conference, lumber buyer Ray McCay stated, "Over the next three years, Home Depot will phase out wood products from environmentally sensitive areas unless certified. This policy tells our vendor partners that Home Depot will devote its wood purchasing dollars to wood products that are environmentally sound. Our commitment to the environment is about the sustainability of our business."
McCay continued, "Home Depot now carries FSC certified hardwood plywood. We have replaced our existing vendor partner in several areas. The vendor that was replaced is actually pursuing certification now and that's what we like to see."
Now in its infancy, forest certification has posed more questions than it has answered. Which certification scheme is best? What does environmentally sensitive really mean? What should chain ofcustody include?
Whatever the answers eventually agreed upon, there seems no question at this time that certification is here to stay.

What Do These Marine Facilities Have In Common?
In coastal areas where marine-boring organisms like Teredo, Pholad, and Limnoria tripunctata are present, there's an important need to protect below-water pilings. CHEMONITE provides the best possible protection for above-water and below-water structures everywhere, from freezing seas to tropical waters. That's why the wood you speciff should be Chemonite-treated.

Oregon State Docks float CHEMOI*{[[E"
Some of the most beautiftrl dock facilities in the state of Oregon are planned and developed by the Oregon State Marine Board .This unique state agency is dedicated to making Oregon boating as enioyable as possible for tourists and residents alike. One of the reasons the facilities are as affractive as they are is that the Board is an enthusiastic user of kilndried, CHEMONITE (ACZlt\treated Douglas fir.
According to Ron Rhodehamel, Chief Facilities Engineer, the Marine Board at first dabbled with CcA-treated Douglas fir in its standard float module design, but the treatment didn't consistently meet the specified 0.6 retention. So, since 1988, the Board has usedA'WPAcertified, CHEMONITE-treated Douglas fir in hundreds of float designs.
Rhodehamel says these floats have performed beautifully in Oregon's grueling river conditions. He adds that kiln drying has made a big difference in the appearance of their CHEMONITE-treated wood in the last couple years.
The first Ch€monite-treated floats, built in 1988, still show no signs of deterioration. Rhodehamel is confident that the hundreds of Chemonitetreated floats across Oregon will last for decades.
Specifying CHEMONTIE ensures that your structure will be attractive and protected from rot, decay, insect, and marine-borer datnage - and stay structurally sound for years to come.

their home or project by offering-and understanding-the variety of available window glazing options.
"Different climates and styles of homes require different glazing options to maximize their efficiency," says Bob Eckert, residential market manager for Weather Shield Windows & Doors. "Windows can also help reduce noisy outdoor traffic sounds from entering a home."
Weather Shield, for example, offers eight different glazing options. ranging from a single-glazed glass that replicates historic homes but has minimal insulating value up to Value R-10
with three panes of glass for maximum efficiency.
"Everyone-whether for a new construction project or window replacement-should understand the key window technology before selecting a window," advises Eckert.
U-values represent the amount of heat that escapes through a wall, window, roof or other surface in an hour's time. The lower its U-value, the more energy efficient a material is.
BETTER AND BEST: Double-glazed (top right) and triple-glazed windows (below) provide greater energy efliciency and long{erm savings.
R-values are the direct opposite of U-values. R-values measure an object's resistance to heat flow. The higher a material's R-value, the lower its U-value and the less energy it will lose. A window's R-Value depends on three factors: the number of layers of glass (called glazing), what's between those layers (either air or gas), and whether one or more layers of glazing have been treated with a Low E coating.
Low E stands for low emissivity. a property un ique to materials that light can pass through. Filtering out part of the light spectrum (the part that transmits heat) greatly reduces a window's U-value and increases its R-value. In general, Low E windows are more energy efficient, moderate home temperatures, and reduce fading of fabrics.
Windows with single-glazing have a single pane of glass. These windows have a very low R-value and can be used best in structures such as garages and tool sheds, where energy efficiency is not a consideration.
A step up from single-glazed windows is a double-glazed window, also called Insulated or Insul glass windows. Either air or safe. colorless. odorless gas is tightly sealed between
the two panes of glass. For added energy efficiency, one or both panes can be treated with a Low E coating to bring the window up to a Value R-5.
For the best energy efficient insulating power in a window, buyers should consider triple-glazed windows. Argon or a mixture of argon and krypton fill the spaces between the three panes of glass. Triple-glazed windows with Low E coatings on two of the panes dramatically improves energy efficiency and gives the homeowner a Value R-10 window.
"While it may be more expensive in the short-run to purchase a high R-
"A homeowner will save dollars on heating and cooling costs every month of the year for the life of the window."
Value window, the homeowner will save heating and cooling costs in the long run," says Eckert. "Three panes of glass with two Low E-coated surfaces provide year-round comfort and savings as well as filter the ultraviolet light that causes fading. This type of glazing option reduces heat coming into the home in the summer and helps retain daytime sunlight by reflecting warm air back into a room."

VEARS AFTER their developI. ment. flexible resin materials continue usurping wood for use as trim for arched windows and curved walls. New materials provide even greater advantages and closer similarities to the wood materials they replace.
Ultra-Flex Moulding Inc., San Marcos, Ca., recently developed a syntactic polymer formulation said to better duplicate the qualities of wood and provide even greater flexibility, without splitting, cracking or breaking.
Similarly, Allen Jones, president of Flex Trim Mouldings, Inc., Rancho Cucamonga, Ca., sees increased dura-
ork
bility as a key to growth. "High temperature tear strength is the most important quality issue," he says. "Without good tear strength flexible trim will tear apart at the nail holes as the material softens when heated by sunlight. Builders are short on time and do not want to use a product that they may have to replace later if cracks appear."
In the early product development years, there were many cracking and splitting warranty problems. "Since then." adds Jones. "our advanced resin technology has virtually eliminated all product failures. Any company that does not warrant breakage most likely has not advanced."
Flex Trim constantly works to make the products stronger and easier to use. "Most people assume that flexible trim arrives straight and can be simply bent to any radius shape they desire," Jones explains. "Although not exactly true. it is a dream that we are in pursuit of. Most casing applications require the Flex Trim pre-formed to the basic shape during manufacture, and we are in pursuit of being first to launch a product that eliminates that step. We desire to make the product easier to use and purchase."
ResinArt, producer of DuraFlex flexible moulding, uses both urethane and polyester. "During the last two years, we've been selling more of the flexible urethane, and less of the flexible polyester," says Gary Uecker, owner/president, ResinArt-West, Costa Mesa, Ca. "We're still using both, but more and more of the urethane because it's stronger and better all around, especially for exterior uses. It can be abused and tweaked."
"Although," Uecker adds, "it does cost a little more money. They're both petroleum-based products, but the urethane is more sensitive to price

increases in raw materials. The more economy-minded buyer who just wants a simple curve will stick with polyester. "
He points to the strong economy to help explain the growth in urethanes: "People are in a hurry to complete jobs, so they say, 'We don't even want to mess with it. We want something that's real durable. Let's get the better product."'
Flex Moulding Inc., Hackensack, N.J., has stayed with polyester to manufacture its Flex Moulding and SuperFlex. "There are urethanes and other newer casting materials out there, but we're sticking with the tried and true," says general manager Miguel Dominguez. "We prefer the performance of polyester resins. One of the reasons is their superior compatibility with finishes."
Recent innovations by Flex Moulding include a completely fireproof formulation and a fire retardant formulation that significantly increases the time polyester materials can withstand fire before starting to burn.
He also forecasts continuing growth in the overall flexible millwork sector. "Demand is increasing, I think, due in part to people becoming more aware of the existence of these types of products," Dominguez explains. "They're beginning to exercise that design flexibility the enahanced availability of these kinds of products allows them more freedom in their design work."
Manufacturers expect demand for flexible millwork, especially high-end products, to continue to grow. To help retailers capitalize, several sales aids are available for promoting the products in-store. Flex Trim's latest merchandising aids include a sales video that runs in a l5-minute loop and a display showcasing a stained woodgrain radius piece of flexible moulding, anchored by a rosette, mounted to a full-color poster background. Its solid base has a built-in holder for 50 tri-fold brochures.
FIex Facts
How flexible is flexible millwork?
The flexibility of the moulding pattern depends upon sey€ral factors. Pattern size, shape, material type and application all determine the flexibility limits of a given p€t&m. Many must be pre-formed at the factory.
For site-far@products, the smaller the moulding the more flexible it,will be. A l/2" xll2" cove mould, for example, will be very ffexible and accommodate most curvatuiss, while a 2-l/2"x2-l/2" brick mould will be very stiff and need to be pre-curved at the factory,
Mouldings that are &inner in one dimension than the other, hke a ll2"x3-l/2" base moulding, will bend easily in the direction of the lesser dimension.
Material type also is a factor. Most fiacturo if ovsrstressed. Others won't fracfure no matter how much stress is placed on them.
Can it be stained?
Flexible millwork typically stains similar to wood. Thicker, heavily pigmented stains work best. Thinner stains may require multiple coats. If mouldings are stained prior to installation, the stain may crack when the moulding is flexed.
Painteat
Painting flexible trim reportedly is easier than painting wood;:because it requires no priming or sanding.
How is it fastened?
Standard methods of fastening mouldings apply, using nails, screws and constmction adhesive. Failure to adequately adhere flexible molding may result in sags between fastening points.
Howis it cut?
Use the same tools and methods as wood. Material should be cut a little long and shaved to exact length. It also can,bp macL,ine shaped, although maohining staiil grade maierial will rernove the grain texture from the out surfaee.
How much does it cost?
Premium flexible moulding is eoruiderably more expensive than istralght wood molding. Manufaciurerq, though, insist that flexible mbri, lding is to be used in conjuncfion, wittr rather than in place of e*aignt wood moulding. Flexible moldings should only be used in areas where the moulding must be curved to fit.

Association? What is it composed of? What does it do?
We can't tell you how many times we have been asked these very questions. To explain exactly what WMMPA is, we have to travel back in time to 1963.
On June 1 1, 1963, "Fitz" Binnion of Lakeview Manufacturing Company called a meeting in San Francisco, Ca., to propose to nine other companies that theyform a trade association of moulding and millwork manufacturers. Binnion felt that a group of manufacturers could tackle industry problems more effectively than any single producer could. The group agreed, and they formed the Western Wood Moulding Producers, which later became the WMMPA.
Thirty-seven
years later, the Wood Moulding and Millwork Producers Association is an international trade association for manufacturers of hardwood, softwood, fingerjoint and medium density fiberboard mouldings, interior and exterior doorjambs and frames, plank paneling and related millwork products.
The association's goals are fivefold:
(1) Promote quality products produced by its membership.
The WMMPA promotes the products its members produce in a number of ways. Part of its annual operating budget is applied toward marketing, including advertisements in industry publications such as The Merchant Magazine and Better Homes & Gardens. WMMPA also submits articles for these and other publications to promote the use of wood mouldings and millwork.
The association also produces many in-house publications and videotapes to help disseminate information on our members' products. Some of the brochures explain how to work with and install certain types of wood mouldings (lattice, crown, picture frame, jambs and frames), how to finish and stain wood mouldings and millwork, and even how to sell wood mouldings.
The WMMPA realizes that it needs to target all areas of the market from the jobber to the do-it-yourselfer and everyone in between, and it has

DEALERS looking for merchandising tips? WMMPA has helpful literature,
designed brochures and tapes to do just that. It also produces a buyer's directory each year that describes each member firm and the products they produce. The publication has become the "must-have" tool for industry buyers of millwork products.
(2) Devetop sources of supply.
The WMMPA has arranged wood sourcing trips around the world that have helped its membership scout out and acquire lumber they can use to manufacture wood mouldings. Recent destinations include New Zealand. Chile and Russia.
(3) Promote optimum use of raw materials.
The WMMPA is committed to perpetuating the world's forests for products and the environment. It supports a forest policy featuring reasonable set-asides for enjoyment by people and a balance with other living things. It also supports the principles of a renewable resource to provide timber dedicated to wood products for the public. The WMMPA believes the environment can best be served by both and is committed to the protection and enhancement of the natural life cycle of our forests.
(4) Stanaardize the products our members produce.

work products.
WMMPA promotes the use of wood mouldings globally in a number of ways.
Representatives attend both international and domestic trade shows, such as the National Association of Home Builders Show, National Sash & Door Jobbers Association's annual meeting, International Woodworking Machinery & Furniture Supply Fair in Atlanta, Ga.; AWFS Woodworking Fair in Anaheim, Ca.; LIcNe in Germany, the Good Living Show in Japan, and Maderalia in Spain.

(a) Hinged interior wood door jambs
(b) Exterior wood door frames
(c) Wood moulding requirements
(d) Vinyl wrapped interior moulding and millwork
(e) Standard certified fingerjointed or laminated non-structural wood
The international trade shows are a marketing tool funded with Foreign Agricultural Service money provided through both the Softwood Export Council and the American Hardwood Export Council. The WMMPA is a member of both organizations.
The WMMPA also maintains a Web site at wmmpa.com. The site features a directory of manufacturing and associate members, information on available literature and upcoming association events, links to other wood industry sites, and samples of moulding usage with color pictures illustrating the various ways to decorate a room. The site also welcomes questions about wood moulding by email.
The WMMPA stages two membership meetings a year, providing members with the opportunity to discuss industry topics at board and committee meetings and listen to top industry speakers address the most current topics and issues of the day.
In addition to collectively addressing common problems with other producers, members can use meetings to meet with suppliers of raw materials, machinery, supplies and services.
The WMMPA has group programs in the works that will allow the membership to take advantage of bulkpriced buying of items such as electricity. Another program in the planning stages is a property tax auditing service that may permit members to realize tax savings on misclassified assets.
Studies have shown that when a typical consumer buys for a remodeling project, 25Vo of the purchases for that project are moulding and millwork. The WMMPA is very proud of this amazing statistic, and remains committed to supporting and promoting these sought-after products.

Simpson To Sell Ex-MillTown
Simpson Timber Co., Seattle, Wa., has placed the company-owned, 108year-old former mill town of Samoa, Ca., on the auction block.
The 60-acre, 3O0-population bayside town has 98 homes. an ll-room Victorian inn, 23,000 sq. ft. of commercial space and the popular Samoa Cookhouse, all of which can be had Sept. l5 for a minimum sealed-bid of $1.75 million.
The tiny hamlet, 300 miles north of San Francisco, was part of the assets that Simpson acquired in its 1998 purchase of Louisiana-Pacific Corp.'s Cal i flornia timber properties.

Funding for any redevelopment plans could one day come from the $22 million in lost tax revenues that Humboldt County received last year from the federal and state governments' purchase of the Headwaters Forest resion.
New Pro-Wood Consortium
A consortium of wood products industry organizations have formed the Wood Promotion Network, a coalition to promote the use of North American wood products.

Weyerhaeuser lrons Out Suit
Weyerhaeuser Co., Federal Way, Wa., has agreed to settle a nationwide class action suit pertaining to defective hardboard siding and expects to pay $82 million during the second quarter to cover settlement costs.
Plaintiffs who had the company's siding installed from Jan. l, 1981 through Dec. 31, 1999 will receive payment over a nine-year period, according to Robert A. Dowdy, vice president and general counsel.
"An independent adjuster will review each claim submitted and
determine if it qualifies for payment under terms of the settlement agreement," he said. "This proposed settlement will benefit the company by ending the uncertainty and expense of defending class action litigation."
The siding was mainly sold to builders on the West Coast.
Settlement Clears The Air
Willamette Industries. Portland. Or., will spend over $90 million to ser tle a federal lawsuit claiming the company failed to control the level of air pollution from l3 plants in four states.
The firm will spend an estimated $74 million on new pollution control equipment and $8 million on environmental projects at mills in Chester, S.C.; Emerson and Malvern, Ar.; Dodson, Ruston, Zwolle, Lillie and Simsboro, La., and Albany, Bend, Eugene, Foster and Springfield, Or.
Willamette also agreed to pay an $11.2 million fine, the largest ever assessed for factory emissions of air pollution. In 1993, Louisiana-Pacific paid $11 million for similar offenses.
The actions are part of a continuing series of Clean Air Act enforcement initiatives by the Clinton Administration.
Willamette estimates cleanup costs at $28 million, not $74 million. "To insinuate that we illegally emitted these pollutants is, in our opinion, stepping over the bounds," said exec. v.p. Eddie McMillan. "We didn't just blindly ignore what was going on."
EPA Administrator Carol Browner said the agency is contemplating a case against Boise Cascade Corp.
While noting that the EPA told the firm in March that the company might have violations at eight facilities, Boise Cascade's Mike Moser said the agency hasn't brought suit. "It's just a negotiation at this point," he said.
Maxxam CEO Shown The $$$
According to Securities & Exchange Commission records, Charles Hurwitz, Maxxam chairman and ceo, received an $11.6 million stock bonus from the board of directors for his part in the March 1999 Headwaters Forest sale to the U.S. Government.
Maxxam, a majority owner of Kaiser Aluminum Co.. is parent company of Pacific Lumber Co., Scotia, Ca., the former Headwaters owner. Hurwitz. 59. received the bonus in the form of 256,808 shares of Maxxam stock last December.

to protect you and your customers from the perils of tiger wood.
Lurking in that benign order for radiata pine mouldings may be a startling color and density variation known as tiger wood. Most radiatas mature in warm climates with a year-round growing season which encourages wide, hard, and dark winter growth rings - leaving you seeing stripes when contrasted with softer, lighter, and brighter summer rings.
The MiB transform the tiger into a pussycat with our new line of Bridiata Pine"'mouldings. Bridiata Pine comes from radiata grown in a special region of southern New Zealand where the winters are too cold to allow much growth. Smaller winter rings combined with brighter summer rings give Bridiata a creamy white appearance and soft texture similar to ponderosa pine.
The MiB ensure Bridiata performs perfectly by cutting and drying it at our New Zealand sawmill using Dried Bright" technology. Our experts in New Zealand and Oregon craft the Bridiata Pine into

One interesting note of trivia, the National Hardware show, now in its 55th year, was started in New York City in 1946 to fill the pipeline for household goods after World War II. G-P Selling Timber Unit To Plum Creek
Georgia-Pacific Corp., Atlanta, Ga., has agreed to sell its Timber Co. subsidiary to Plum Creek Timber Co., Seattle, Wa., reportedly making the latter firm the second-largest private timberland owner in the country.
The sale, said to be valued at roughly $4 billion, including $l billion in debt, was made to help G-P fund its earlier $l I billion acquisition of tissue-paper maker Fort James Corp., Deerfield, Il.
Georgia-Pacific chairman and ceo A.D. "Pete" Correll said the Fort James acquisition will increase the'73year-old firm's market share in the consumer-products arena. "(Now) Georgia-Pacific can efficiently procure wood and fiber for our manufacturing base independently, on the open market, from which more than 8O7o of our raw material needs are already supplied," he said.
If approved, the deal will give Plum Creek a timber portfolio of more than 7.9 million acres in 19 states, an element not lost on president and ceo Rick R. Holley. "We are acquiring some of the most productive timber assets in the United States." he said.
The acquisition includes a 10-year wood supply agreement between Georgia-Pacific and The Timber Co., that ensures continued access to fiber for G-P's manufacturing facilities and providing Plum Creek with a stable,
long-term customer for The Timber Co.'s Southeastern timberlands.
"We have demonstrated that manufacturers don't have to own timberlands to be competitive," Correll said, adding that G-P now buys roughly 8O7o of its raw materials on the open market.

Retiring After 75 Years
After three quarters of a century buying and selling hardwood, Charlie Wilson has decided to retire at age 93.
Despite offers over the years from Lane Stanton Vance Lumber Co., City of Industry, Ca., to shorten his work week, Charlie was always at his desk buying hardwood five days a week, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. He also commuted in the notorious California traffic 30 minutes each way to the office.
He says hardwood is "a good business, with nice people, most of whom are fairly honest." He ascribes his longevity, in part, to his work. "If you don't like the business you're in, you won't live long. It affects your health."
Material handling has undergone the greatest changes in his 75 years. "Trucks had solid rubber tires, there were no lift trucks-it was saddle trucks then-and the rail cars were unloaded by hand. The last 10-15 years have brought the biggest changes, mixed cars, containers and computers, which have made more, not less, paperwork." As for the
future, Charlie says, "You've got to change or you'll be out of business."
His first job in 1924 was as a commission salesman with Mox Lumber Co. in Los Angeles. A big distribution yard, they sold sash, doors, windows and some hardwood lumber. In 1928 he joined L.W. Blinn Co., which had a 43 acre yard at the Los Angeles harbor. In 1934 he moved to E. J. Stanton & Sons, which had been founded in Los Angeles in 1896. In 1970, sister companies Lane Lumber Co. and the Vance Lumber Co. bought the Stanton inventory and the rights to use the name. The resulting firm, Lane Stanton Vance Lumber Co., was where Charlie would toil until last month. The firm was acquired in July by Hampton Affiliates of Portland, Or.
For the first time in 75 years, Charlie Wilson is now relaxing with his two children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Giants Ready Joint E-Business
Georgia-Pacific, Intirnational Paper and Weyerhaeuser Co., will go online with ForestExpress, their B2B e-commerce joint venture, in fourth quarter 2000 (see April, p. 28).

Based in Atlanta, Ga., ForestExpress will operate as an independent company with its own management. Now under the guidance of a board drawn from the ranks of its founding partners, the company is searching for a chief executive. In the interim, Keith Russell, Boston Consulting Group, is serving in the ceo's role. Bob Renner, G-P director of e-commerce, is chief technology officer.
Services, initially focusing on building materials, printing and writing papers, recovered fiber and timber, will be open to all businesses that want to participate.

Butterfly Heads For Court
Anti-logging activist Julia "Butterfly" Hill, who spent more than two years in a 200-ft. tall redwood on Pacific Lumber Co. property, has filed suit over a magazine ad that allegedly mocks her.
The suit against AT&T, OmniSky Corp. and their agency claims the ad, purportedly reminiscent of photos taken of Hill, shows a woman living in a tree-but she is holding a small OmniSky wireless Internet device. At the base of the tree, a man holding two large buckets is looking up a rope ladder. A logo on his jacket reads "sponge-bath.com."

Michelle Randall, Director of Sustainability and Ken Frank, Chief 0perating fficer, from Hayward Lumber, have recently joined the ranks of lumber dealers who have decided to switch to Pac BorrM lumber and plywood as well as ACQ Preservf $bod. Both products are arsenic and chromium free and meet the rigorous standards set by Hayward Lumber to be included in their green building program.
lVaste from Pac Borru lumber and ptywood as well as ACQ Preserveil Wood can be disposed of I ordinary trash collection. llbrkers handling both products take no more precautions than they would handling untreated lumber. Pac BorrM lumber and plywood should be used in areas continuously protected from liquid water, like sill plate.
lf you are a fonrard{hinking lumber dealer and want to be on a winning team, call the Pacific llbod Preserving Companies, the leader in wood preservation.

The American Wood-Preservers'Association book of Standards C2-99. page 34, note E states, "Coastal Douglas-fir, from a few geographical areas, has been found suitable for treatment with ACC or CCA. But, it is generally recognized that most sawn products from Coastal Douglas-fir are extremely difficult to treat with the preservatives ACC and CCA to the penetration and retention requirements of this Standard and related Commodity Standards for sawn products, even when incised."
State and local building officials are on the lookout for insufficiently treated Douglas fir lumber resulting from misinterpretations of the AWPA standards.
When the job calls for treated wood, the choice is obvious. Chemonite ACZA consistently meets building code standards for treated wood. Chemonite ACZA is the only waterborne pressure treatment available to penetrate Douglas fir up to 2.50# pcf to assure structural integrity and compliance with AWPA standards.
Look for the inspection tag. Protect your investment. Look for the quality mark of an accredited ALSC inspection agency to insure that you are using the right application for the job.
