A day in the life
One of the great pleasures of my job is to get out several times a month and meet people in the industry. As we move into meeting season, I urge you all to take every opportunity to attend your association meetings, mill weeks, outings, open houses, trade show events, etc. These are the ties that bind this great industry we work in. I can say for myself, in addition to meeting great people, I learn a tremendous amount. The effort and cost that go into putting these events together beg your support.
I had an interesting time this month. I went to San Francisco for the Western Building Show-and
probably should have stayed in bed under the covers for two days. In the first hour of the show, I fell from the third step of a prospective advertiser's booth. I performed an unimpressive swan dive worth no more than a 4.8, and landed prostrate on the floor, looking up at a startled marketing manager. Now while I was thinking advertising space, he was thinking lawsuit. Unbowed, bloody legs and all, I carried on, at least trying to give the impression of professionalism.
Later that day, I got off the hotel shuttlebus and proceeded into the lobby searching for my wallet. Quickly realizing I had left it on the
shuttle, I raced out to see the bus sitting at the next light. With my camera on one shoulder and my camera bag on the other, I began chasing after the bus. Within 30 yards the light changed and off it went. I did my film stuntman routine running through and against the traffic lights in Union Square, jumping over and around cars, as my bus slowed for the next light. When I approached within 20 yards, off it went again. Two lights later, and a half a mile from where I started, one overweight publisher, minus 5 lbs. of sweat, banged on the door of the bus. The driver, noting my crazed panting, assumed I was a wino or pan handler, and began to drive off, until a passenger asked him to stop and open the door for me. My wallet was under the seat where I left it.
Next morning, my passion for food overcame me, and I went down to Fisherman's Wharf. On the way back, I stopped to order a crepe from a street vendor. Back at the parking lot, I couldn't find my parking ticket. I finally located it-lying in the street, three blocks back at the crepe stand.
On the other hand, I have to say that the Mill Week I attended in the Umpqua Valley the following week just reminded me how lucky I am to do what I do. As part of the entertainment, the event included a wonderful trip on jet boags down the Rogue River through the most beautiful scenery imaginable. Picture 50-seat jet boats doing wheelies, at full speed, in the middle of the river. I have never heard so much laughter, although any one of us could have won a wet T-shirt competition.
I hope you all block out at least a few days vacation over the summer, and enjoy what seems to be the first good consistent bout of weather of the year in most of the country. Business seems good-let it continue. Get out and meet your industry friends. Have a sreat summer.

The Green Building Boom
When one thinks of "green building," most people tend to think of things such as energy efficient lighting, increased water efficiency, integrated recycling centers, and more "pleasant" work atmospheres for employees. What is often overlooked, and has become a very important issue, is the wood used in building and construction processes, and how this directly translates into forest conservation.
Thanks to the Leadership in EnergY & Environmental Design program of the US Green Building Council, there has been a definite surge in the specification of Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood for use in commercial construction projects. The program is a commercial building design guideline and third-party
certification tool that aims to "improve occupant well-being, environmental performance and economic returns of buildings using established and innovative practices, standards and technologies."
Under the system, Credit 7 in the Materials & Resources category addresses the issue of certified wood, with the intent of encouraging environmentally responsible forest management. The requirements for the credit are to use a minimum of 50Vo wood-based materials and products that are FSC-certified.
A central component of the LEED program is the tracking and documentation of materials used in the building project. In the case ofthe certified wood credit, this involved documentation of wood purchase invoices and FSC Chain-
of-Custody certificates from suppliers' To help organize and ease the process, the Certified Wood & Paper Association has developed a project toolkit that explains the wood related credits (including other credits dealing with recycled and reclaimed wood), as well as providing sample documentation forms and invoices.
This trend is not just in commercial construction-residential construction is also beginning to go "green" as well, and opening up new markets for FSC suppliers. For example, in 2000, builder KB Home agreed to work with the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council to eliminate their use of wood that comes from what NRDC considers to be endangered forests.

Growing Tomorrow's Forests TodaY
Since it was unvbiled in 1995, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program has grown to trecorne oneof the world's largest sustainable forestry and certification programl. It promotes the perpetual growing arid harvesting of trees as well as the long-term protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality.
More than 136 million acres of forest-lands in North America are enrolled in the program, 96 million of which have been independently third-party certified to conform to the SFI Standard. The program has over 200 participants.
While sustaining a healthy supply of trees makes good business sense for everyone in the supply chain, SFI has ensured a long-term commitment to sus-
tainable forestry by establishing an independent governing body of environmentalists, academics. and industry leaders called the Sustainable Forestry Board.
As an independent; non-Profit grouP, the board manages the Standard, as well as the pfogram's third-party certification process, dispute resolution, and quality control, while continuously working to refine and improve those efforts. Recent refinements to the Standard have led to more stringertt policies and standards for wildlife protection, improved water and air quality, slimination of illegal logging, protection of imperiled forests, and the promotion of best management practices on lands not under SFI panicipant control.
More specifically, companies seeking SFI certification must now develop and implement plans to protect ecological communities, biodiversity hotspots, and major nopical wilderness areas in forests worldwide, based in part on information obtained from organizations such as the Nature Conservancy's Natureserve.
As the board continues to evaluate and refine the SFI Standard. with input from forestry experts, conservation groups, landowners, governments, participating members, customers, and the general public, the ultimate payoff will be productive, responsibly managed forests that assure a reliable and affordable supply of paper, pulp. lumber, and wood products for generations to come.

One company's take on certification
At Boise, forest certification means more than having t007o of its 2.4 million acres certified against the SFI Standard. The company has documentation to prove that independent auditors find their forest practices meet or exceed strict SFI objectives.
However, Boise also receives thirdparty recognition through awards, input from others on ways to constantly improve their forest management, and collaborative efforts with others to enhance wildlife habitat.
ln the past few months, several Boise employees (forest engineer Eric Bieker, chief forester Ken Cummings and wildlife biologists Brian Kernohan and Tim Burnet| received third-party recognition for helping Boise in their sustainable management of forest resources.
In 1999. Boise created the Forest
Stewardship Advisory Council, an independent panel of nationally known forestry experts who "think outside the box" to continually advise Boise on ways to improve forest management' The council participates in forest audits, reviews results and recommends changes. Jack Ward Thomas, former chief of the U.S. Forest Service, said, "My service on the council, observing audits, and working with managers to seek 'a better way' has convinced me that Boise is dedicated to the production of wood products in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive manner."
Working in collaboration with conservation organizations and state agencies is common at Boise. For instance, prescribed burns are conducted on Boise's Louisiana timberlands in conjunction with the National Wild Turkey
Federation to improve the Turkey habitat. In ldaho, Boise's stafT provided The Nature Conservancy with a database and computer mapping system so they can effectively analyze 2,000 acres for the protection of open space and wildlife habitat. In Minnesota, Boise formed a partnership with Bat Conservation International to evaluate the use of different bat roosting structures. The information will guide the selection of an effective roost box design for use in areas deficient of this habitat feature.
"SFI certification is a great way to make our customers, employees and the public aware that we're excellent forestland managers," said stewardship coordinator Brad Holt. "But that onlY scratches the surface of what Boise does to continually improve its forest stewardship program.

Making it in the moulding industry
rI'IRENDS in the wood mouldI ing industry were recently discussed by Wood Moulding & Millwork Producers Association president Matt Allen, Mt. Taylor Millwork, Milan, N.M., and WMMPA executive vice president Kellie Schroeder.
Schroeder: What do you believe is the most difficult situation facing your business today?
Allen: I think that our inability to find qualified help is a big issue. Our business is located in what I believe has become the poorest state in the Union. Furthermore, it is located in one of the three poorest counties within that state. And yet, we fight maintaining employees. We find many people who want a job, but few who want to work.
The other big concern I have pertains to our current trade deficit. Our government continues to lower the interest rates in the hope that continued housing growth will stimulate the economy. On a long-term basis I do not think it will work. They are relying on the housing industry to carry our economy.
Frankly, there is little doubt that the economy will be helped, but only on a small level. New housing will create jobs in the construction industry and no doubt there are a few more clerks at Home Depot or Lowe's. But, the reality of the situation is that the products being sold to manufacture these homes are coming from overseas. If those products were being manufactured here at home, many jobs would be created and supported. However, when the products are being imported with no governmental attempt at balanced trade, the economies being stimulated are located in the countries from whence these products come. Thus, our low interest rates are supporting foreign economies, not our own.
I feel that the United States of America is changing. We have gone from a proud nation of manufacturers to a nation of consumers. At one point we were the manufacturing superpower of the world. But, I believe we are becoming simply a nation of consumers, eagerly absorbing products brought to us by our overseas competition who are enjoying an economic edge due to their lower wage base and other advantages.
We need balanced trade. If foreign economies beat us in manufacturing because their quality is better, so be it. But, if they are allowed to beat us based solely upon cheap prices due to their economic advantage and our government allows this, we have a problem.
Schroeder: What do you foresee as the biggest change tak-
ing place in the moulding and millwork business in the next l0 years?
Allen: I think that the largest change will be a continuation of our current situation. More and more material will continue to be imported from overseas. There will be fewer and fewer successful U.S. manufacturers of these products. Foreign competitors will sell their products more cheaply than U.S. manufacturers resulting in an artificial ceiling on the market. This ceiling will keep U.S. manufacturers from selling at profitable levels all while their cost of doing business will increase with standard inflation. I do not foresee pood thinss for our industry.
Schroeder: Matt, your father, your brother and now you have all served as WMMPA president. Can you explain Mt. Taylor Millwork's membership longevity with WMMPA?
Allen: I think that over the years we have all been able to recognize that the opportunity to socialize with our peers, to exchange information and to rally around our industry is extremely important. Mt. Taylor Millwork, Inc. became a member of the WMMPA in 1968. Since that time, at least to the best of my knowledge, the WMMPA has had only one meeting at which there was no representative from our company. Moreover, for those people hesitant to join an industry association, I think they need to recognize that they have a responsibility not only to themselves to be involved in activities that further their business, but also to the industry itself. Now, let's turn this conversation around for the next few minutes and have you answer a few questions. What are the key elements manufacturers seek when applying for membership in WMMPA?
Schroeder: Connectivity to the industry, marketing, resource base/educational programs, cost-saving benefits, and validation of their product in the marketplace.
Allen: What is one of the first benefits realized after joining WMMPA?
Schroeder: Marketing of the company and their available products in three areas: The new member gains instant exposure through our

wmmpa.com web site. The searchable database is a key feature that lets visitors to wmmpa.com sift through our membership listing to find those companies that manufacture products they are seeking to purchase.
The WMMPA Directory of Members, Products & Services is a popular publication that is widely distributed in North America to the buyers of wood moulding and millwork.
The print advertising the association conducts throughout the year on behalf of its membership in industry specific magazines gains name recognition for all member companies.
Allen: WMMPA marked 40 years last month. Has the association changed its mission or purpose for existence since its inception in 1963?
Schroeder: No, our purpose has not changed. We have, however, streamlined our business meetings, focusing more on education geared specifically to moulding and millwork manufacturers. The speakers we hire deliver timely topics that our members can use each day in their facilities. Now we spend more time sitting down together discussing our markets, available technology, and standards, sharing our knowledge base with each other. There is no greater wealth of wood moulding and millwork knowledge anywhere than when our members gather together. Our members utilize each other's experiences to grow and expand their operations.
Allen: Do you think there are misconceptions by non-member manufacturers regarding WMMPA?
Schroeder: Misconceptions are always out there, whether
they are about the WMMPA or other associations regardless of the industry. I think the number one misconception regarding our organization is that we only service large manufacturing facilities or corporations, which is not the case. Our dues schedule accommodates a one-moulder operation running 15,000 bd. ft. per month or less.
Allen: Is there a benefit that you think is overlooked by potential WMMPA members, kind of a sleeper benefit?
Schroeder: I could say the 20-Minute Fire-Rated Door Frame Standard. Manufacturers that want to produce a fire-rated door frame can utilize our specifications without charge just by joining the WMMPA. I could also point out that just being affiliated with the WM logo has its own benefits and product validation. But, I think I would have to settle on peer interaction. We cannot put a dollar value on rubbing elbows with our peers. If a company were just getting off the ground, what dollar value would they attribute to sitting down at a table with seasoned manufacturers to discuss plant operations?

Gonnector Manufacturer Opens Research Lab
Simpson Strong-Tie Co. recently unveiled a $10 million, state-of-the-art structural engineering and research laboratory in Stockton, Ca. The facility will help Simpson better understand the effects of earthquakes and high wind on structural systems, as well as
design and test innovative, structurally-sound and cost-effective building solutions.
The Tyrell Gilb Research Laboratory opened in mid-July adjacent to its eight-month-old distribution and manufacturing operation. The lab's highly specialized equipment tests a structure's resistance to extreme conditions, including high wind and strong earthquake forces similar in magnitude to those of Northridge, Ca., and Kobe, Japan.
"We are a safety company," said Barclay Simpson, chairman of Simpson Strong-Tie. "With this advanced technology and research, Simpson will continue providing customers with innovative and proven structural building products that not only help to minimize loss of life and property damage during catastrophic events, but also enable the industry to improve building practices cost-effectively."
The 25,000-sq. ft. lab cunently features two types of equipment: a seismic shake table and two cyclic/static test frames. The shake table tests portions of structures up to 25 ft. long and
three stories high. The test involves mounting a wall specimen on top of the shake table, which then moves back and forth to simulate earthquake ground motions.
The cyclic/static frames can test walls up to five stories tall and 50 ft. in length. While shake table testing forces the ground beneath the specimen to move back and forth, cyclic/static testing fixes ground movement, and instead applies force

Will Consumers Pay More For Green?
Results of a recent study show that when given the choice between ecolabeled and non-ecolabeled plywood products, consumers opt for the ecolabeled one. As long as the price of the plywood was the same, the ecolabeled merchandise outsold the non-ecolabeled merchandise 2 to l.
At two Home Depot stores in Oregon, consumers were offered a choice between virtually identical ecolabeled and
non-ecolabeled products in bins right next to each other. Sales totals were then compared for both types to determine if the ecolabel presence affected higher sales. The sales totals showed that 271pieces of ecolabeled products were sold compared to only 132 pieces ofnon-labeled products. Though the study suggested that consumers prefer to purchase the ecolabeled type, if the prices of the plywood products were not the same, the presence of the ecolabel did not increase sales.

Gore Springs, Ms.
Cypress lumber is oft times the most maligned lumber in the industry-primarily because most folks don't know where to look for it or don't know what to do with it when they find it.
Quoting directly from one Texas timber frame manufacturer, "Cypress is not a particularly strong wood." We have reclaimed houses, barns, docks, warehouses, and cotton gins that were built from cypress lumber that have stood for hundreds of years-and in commercial cases have withstood tremendous workloads. We would then resaw or remill this wood and be astounded at the quality of the product. This is not something I have seen in any other common lumber.
Another quote is, "prone to ring shake separation." I would certainly hope so. If not, the cypress shake would be on its backside. Ring separation has not been a factor in any cypress lumber that we have handled.
The most common criticism I have heard is, "it's so expensive." To squelch that complaint, nail a yellow pine 2x 4 and cypress 2x 4board to the side of a building, come back l0 years later, get your cypress board, and try to retrieve what is left of the nails where the pine board was.
"Expense is always relative to quality"-a quote I will attribute to my ex-wife. Obviously, if you are building a
low budget home, cypress would not be the lumber of choice. If you are supplying those who are interested in an investment as well as the aesthetic beauty of the product, cypress is the lumber of choice.
"Cypress is just not available in quantity"-s4pe Texan. I certainly will not suggest that it is as common as the pine that is being eaten by the pine beetle, but I have not had an order that I couldn't fill.
That brings up another subject: wood decay and insect resistance. There are very few types of lumber that even come close to cypress lumber in these departments.
Last but not least, lumber treatment. As far as I know, lumber treatment has been around for decades. There are cypress lumber buildings that have stood in this country for as lons as there has been a U.S.A.
Performance you can measure.
LP's Gang-Lam laminated veneer lumber is a vast improvement over solid wood beams. Problems that naturally occur as solid sawn lumber dries - twisting, splitting, checking, crowning and warping - are greatly reduced. And pound for pound, Gang-Lam LVL has more loadcarrying capacity than solid sawn lumber. The result: a building material that is more reliable, more useable and higher-performing than traditional lumber. Plus, unlike anything available with traditional lumber, Gang-Lam LVL is backed by LP's limited lifetime warranty. For more information on LP Gang-Lam LVL, including component design review services for your designs using LP Engineered Wood Products, contact 1.8fi).999.9105 or visit the LP web site at www.lpcorp.com.

Ziggy's Moving Spokane Hq.
Ziegler Lumber Co., Spokane, Wa., will relocate its headquarters from its Ziggy's Building Materials store on Market Street to its East Holland Street location.
Ziggy's is moving to get out of the path of a planned freeway. The Market Street retail store will not evacuate until it absolutely has to.
To accommodate the headquarters, Ziggy's will remodel 9,000 sq. ft. of floor space in its 100,000-sq. ft. East Holland store to convert it into an office area. Acting as its own general contractor, the company will begin the three-month project in the fall "after the building season, so we don't disrupt the store for customers," said coowner Reid Ziegler.

Fire Strikes Wyoming Yard
A July 2 fire at Buckingham Lumber Co., Buffalo, Wy., destroyed a welding shop, but did not reach the main lumber and hardware store.
The fire started when a spark from a millworker's cutting torch ignited diesel fuel in a nearby parts cleaning basin.
The employee attempted to douse the fire with an extinguisher, but the blaze quickly spread from the hammer mill to the adjacent welding shop, destroying shop tools. air compressors, welding equipment and an old fiberglass boat.
Barrels of oil and oil products, as well as waste-wood products also caught fire.

New New Mexico
Lumberyard
Prospers With Minimal Overhead
At first glance, with no lumber in sight, the five-monthold business looks less like a lumberyard than a yard, period. At New Mexico Builder's Supply, Albuquerque, N.M., typically you'll see little inventory beyond perhaps a few stacks of plywood piled next to the handful of delivery trucks and the trailer that's used as an office.
It's by design. To keep down overhead, the company first sells lumber, windows, nails, studs, trusses or other materials to a builder or remodeler, then buys the products from one of several Albuquerque wholesalers. The dealer picks the materials up, often right at the railroad tracks, soon after they're unloaded, and delivers.
"We saw there was a need for service," said Gabe Mirabal, who owns the business with his father, Jim Mirabal, and partner James Sower.
With a small staff-just the three of them-and no warehouse, the dealer can keep prices low. Plus, the wood is usually in top condition because it hasn't been sitting in a yard for weeks. Not subjecting the lumber to long periods of hot or damp weather also cuts down on returns.
Having previously owned their own home-building company, the Mirabals can better anticipate the needs of their builder customers. New Mexico Builder's Supply provides takeoffs from builders' plans and delivers the materials directly to the job site. The hope is to supply everything up front, so contractors can avoid making multiple trips to a superstore forjust nails or caulk.
"Our competition needs to be more service-oriented," said Gabe Mirabal, "or they'll lose more customers to guys like us."

L-P Reaches Divestiture Goal
With a definitive agreement to sell 465,000 more acres of timberland in southeastern Texas, Louisiana-Pacific Corp. has exceeded its divestiture target of $700 million in asset sales over the last year.
"This agreement marks a key milestone in the divestiture program we announced 14 months ago," said Mark A. Suwyn, L-P's chairman and c.e.o. "Once this sale and other announced transactions are completed, we will have accomplished essentially everything we set out to do within the time period we stated. The total value achieved through this program will exceed the upper end of our $600 to $700 million target. With these funds, we have reduced our debt and have initiated investments in the businesses we have retained."
Connector Firm Adds Research Lab
(Continued from page 24) directly to the wall. Together, the two types of testing equipment complement one another by providing a more complete picture of a structure's performance capabilities.
"The Simpson shake table is like no other in the world," explained Steve Pryor, building systems research and development manager. "ln the past, shake table testing required building a full-scale structure to adequately test a building's structural integrity against seismic demands. Now we can analyze the full effects of an earthquake by testing large-scale wall sections that accurately simulate the full building response."
In order for the lab to withstand the larse-scale forces
created within it, the facility had to be constructed using heavy-duty concrete slabs. The test equipment is secured to a 10,000-sq. ft. concrete strong floor, which is three feet thick, heavily reinforced and can withstand concentrated forces up to 300,000 lbs. The floor sits above a basement and is supported by multiple, l-ft.-wide concrete walls and a mat foundation that is 2-ft. thick. Combined, the foundation, basement walls and strong floor provide l0 million lbs. of mass for the shake table to "push" against while testing wall structures. This massive foundation is required in order to minimize vibrations that result from the shake table testing.
The faciliy will allow the company to test existing products and installation techniques and design new products and techniques. The end result should be better structures-and concrete proof to help convince builders to make them as safe as possible. With test results, according to Pryor, "I can show you that if you add $20 worth of hardware, you'll increase performance by X. The purpose isn't to add cost to the structure; it's to decrease the overall cost of the structure and increase its performance."

Home Depot Scam Artists Confess
Three people face up to five years in prison for conning hundreds of thousands of dollars from Home Depot stores throughout California.
John Patrick Hay, 58, Anthony Davenport, 59, and Linda Broderick, 50, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud at Home Depot stores in Pittsburg, San Leandro, Milpitas and elsewhere.
The trio would copy Universal Product Codes from cheaper versions of faucets and light fixtures, attach them to more expensive counterparts and then return them, according to officials. By paying the cheaper price, they managed to pocket the extra cash or accept gift cards that were sometimes used to buy extra fixtures that had already been discounted from the scam, according to a six-month FBI investigation.
Under the terms of the agreement, they must repay $400,000 to Depot, given that they made more than $ 100 for each of the 1,000 faucets they bought. Defense lawyers said restitution is expected to come fiom $821,949 in funds seized after the arrest. In addition to up to five years in prison, they face a $250,000 fine and three ,/ears probation.

Dealers that stage contractor appreciation and education events do more than build customer loyalty and product awareness-they also help train the next generation of builders.
That's the report from contractors who attend the special events and bring their teen-age sons or daughters along to acquaint them with building products and techniques.

Many of the vendors reported good results from their participation in the Contractor Breakfast. Boise Cascade produces many of the glulam beams and other engineered wood products sold by Colonial.
Boise's Steve Rawlings said, "Everybod y enjoys the special customer events at Colonial. They give the vendors a chance to introduce new products and answer questions about familiar products or services."
For the past 20 years, Colonial Building Products, Centerville, Ut., has attracted a huge crowd of contractors with its annual Contractor Breakfast. This year, over 600 attended, including builders, vendors and manufacturers reps. "We find that the big breakfast event helps build customer loyalty and also shows our appreciation for their business," said Colonial mgr. Fred Hale.
Colonial employees cooked mountains of pancakes and hot dishes in 32 huge Dutch Ovens to produce a legendary "Mountain Man" breakfast. The early morning meal also helped to keep customers up to date about the latest information on products and services available at Colonial.
Contractor Keith Salmon, Salmon & Sons Builders, Centerville, said he eagerly anticipates the breakfast event each spring, and many attendees bring their teenage youngsters along. This helps the junior crowd observe the interaction between builders and suppliers and may get them thinking about taking over dad's business someday, according to Salmon.
